Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Titus (Full Book)
Citation Conventions
- All English citations in this document use the normalizable form
Book Chapter:Verse(e.g.,Titus 2:14,Exodus 19:5,Romans 3:23), matching the Romans baseline house style. - Nepali Bible book name for this curriculum: तीतस (established Nepali Bible Society form). Nepali-language citation rendering (for Phase 2 output, to be confirmed with reviewer per the Romans baseline convention) follows the pattern
तीतस २:१४— verse numbers in Devanagari numerals in-line with prose, Arabic numerals in reference lists per the baseline’s YouVersion-alignment rule. - “Quotation” = verbatim or near-verbatim wording reproduced from a source text.
- “Allusion” = a clear, identifiable reference to a specific OT passage/concept without verbatim wording.
- “Echo” = a thematic or lexical resonance, weaker than allusion, often shared vocabulary or motif rather than a specific passage.
- “Typology” = an OT person, event, or institution treated as a foreshadowing pattern fulfilled in Christ or the Church.
- “Intra-NT Parallel” = a cross-reference to another NT letter (frequently Romans, the anchor curriculum of this pipeline) rather than to the OT.
- “Pagan Citation” = a quotation from non-biblical Greco-Roman literature, cited by Paul for rhetorical purposes — theologically distinct from Scripture citation and flagged accordingly.
Key Finding
Titus contains no verbatim direct quotation of the Old Testament. This distinguishes it sharply from Romans, which contains numerous direct OT citations (e.g., Romans 1:17 quoting Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 4:3 quoting Genesis 15:6; Romans 10:13 quoting Joel 2:32). Titus instead works by allusion, echo, and typology — most densely concentrated in the core passage (2:11–3:8) — plus one direct quotation of pagan Greek literature (1:12), which requires distinct, careful handling so it is never mistaken for Scripture citation. Every chapter is covered below; where a chapter contains no allusion of translation-relevant weight, that section is marked “reviewed, no further items.”
PART 1 — Cross-Reference Matrix
Chapter 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Titus 1:1 | Election, servanthood | Paul; God’s elect | Deuteronomy 7:6 (“chosen people”); Isaiah 45:4; Romans 8:33, Romans 9:11 | Echo / Intra-NT Parallel | Render “elect of God” (ἐκλεκτῶν θεοῦ) consistently with baseline परमेश्वरको छनोट (Romans election doctrine). Must not read as karma-determined destiny; God’s sovereign, personal choice. |
| Titus 1:2 | Providence, God’s truthfulness, hope of eternal life | God | Numbers 23:19 (“God is not man that he should lie”); Psalm 89:34–35 (God’s covenant faithfulness); parallels Romans 8:28-30 (Providence doctrine) | Allusion | ”God, who never lies” (ὁ ἀψευδὴς θεός) reinforces baseline’s Providence doctrine (परमेश्वरको व्यवस्थापन) — God’s personal reliability, not भाग्य (fate). “Eternal life” (अनन्त जीवन) must stay consistent with Romans’ Salvation Critical note: never मुक्ति/मोक्ष/निर्वाण. |
| Titus 1:2 | Promise before time began | God | Ephesians 1:4 (“before the foundation of the world”); 2 Timothy 1:9; Romans 16:25-26 (“mystery…now disclosed”) | Intra-NT Parallel | ”Before the ages of time” ties to the Providence/Covenant doctrinal cluster shared with Romans; render with अनन्त कालभन्दा पहिले, avoiding any phrase suggesting a repeating cosmic-age cycle. |
| Titus 1:3 | Manifestation of the gospel in due time; mission | God, Paul | Galatians 4:4 (“fullness of time”); Romans 16:25-26 | Intra-NT Parallel | ”Manifested” (ἐφανέρωσεν) is the same semantic family as ἐπιφάνεια (2:11, 2:13, 3:4) — render with a term consistent across all four occurrences (see Part 2, Rendering Consistency Rules below). |
| Titus 1:5 | Elder appointment | Titus, Paul | Acts 14:23 (Paul and Barnabas appointing elders in every church) | Intra-NT Parallel | ”Appoint elders in every town” parallels the established apostolic pattern in Acts; no OT background required, but note the office-sense of एल्डर must match the eventual Acts curriculum (if developed) for cross-curriculum consistency. |
| Titus 1:6 | Elder qualifications — household | Elder candidate | 1 Timothy 3:2, 1 Timothy 3:12 (nearly identical “husband of one wife” and “believing/well-behaved children” requirements) | Intra-NT Parallel | Direct doctrinal twin passage to 1 Timothy 3. If a Nepali 1 Timothy curriculum exists or is planned, एक पत्नीको पति and the interpretive note on it must be harmonized across both curricula. |
| Titus 1:7 | Elder vice-list; overseer | Elder candidate | 1 Timothy 3:1-3 (parallel vice list: not a drunkard, not violent, not greedy) | Intra-NT Parallel | Vice-list terms (Low risk individually) should be cross-checked for consistency if a 1 Timothy Nepali package is produced; अध्यक्ष (“overseer”) risk note (temple-administration collision) applies identically there. |
| Titus 1:8-9 | Elder virtue-list; sound doctrine | Elder candidate | 1 Timothy 3:2-3; Romans 12:1-2 conceptually (transformed, godly life as fruit) | Intra-NT Parallel | स्वस्थ शिक्षा (“sound doctrine”) is a Titus/1–2 Timothy pastoral-letter cluster term not present in Romans’ vocabulary; no baseline conflict, but should be added to translation memory as the authoritative rendering across the Pastoral Epistles if they enter this pipeline. |
| Titus 1:10-11 | False teachers; circumcision party | Unnamed false teachers | Galatians 2:12 (“the circumcision party”); Acts 15:1-5 (Judaizing controversy); Philippians 3:2-3 | Allusion / Intra-NT Parallel | ”Of the circumcision” (τῆς περιτομῆς) echoes the same Judaizing controversy addressed at length in Galatians and touched in Romans 2-4 (justification apart from circumcision/law-works). Render खतना समूहका consistently with any future Galatians-curriculum rendering. |
| Titus 1:12 | Cretan character; pagan citation | Epimenides (Cretan poet, 6th c. BC) — NOT a biblical prophet | Non-biblical: attributed to Epimenides of Crete; structurally parallel to Paul’s citation of Epimenides/Aratus in Acts 17:28 and of Menander in 1 Corinthians 15:33 | Pagan Citation (distinct category — see note below) | CRITICAL HANDLING NOTE: This is not an OT/NT cross-reference but Paul’s rhetorical citation of secular Greek literature. Render तिनीहरूकै एक कवि/भविष्यवक्ता, NOT अगमवक्ता (baseline’s term reserved for genuine Scripture-inspiring prophets, tied to the Inspiration of Scripture doctrine). Flag for theologian review to ensure the distinction is preserved in any teaching notes accompanying the translated text. |
| Titus 1:13-14 | Sound faith; Jewish myths | Paul, Titus, false teachers | 1 Timothy 1:4 (“myths and endless genealogies”); 2 Timothy 4:4 (“turn away…to myths”) | Intra-NT Parallel | ”Jewish myths” (μῦθοι Ἰουδαϊκοί) is a Pastoral-Epistles-cluster term; render यहूदी मनगढन्ते कथाहरू consistently if 1–2 Timothy curricula are added later. |
| Titus 1:15 | Purity — ritual vs. moral | Believers vs. false teachers | Mark 7:15,19 (Jesus: nothing outside defiles); Romans 14:14, 14:20 (“all food is clean”); background: Leviticus 11 dietary purity law; Numbers 19 ritual purity | Allusion / Intra-NT Parallel | Direct doctrinal parallel to Romans 14’s “clean/unclean” debate. CRITICAL CONSISTENCY RULE: the Nepali rendering of “pure/clean” here (शुद्ध) must be checked against however Romans 14:14, 14:20 render “clean” in the Romans translation memory; if Romans used a different Nepali term for the same Greek concept (καθαρός), reconcile to a single consistent rendering across both curricula, with the shared translator note on ritual-purity collision risk (Muluki Ain caste-purity codes) applied to both. |
| Titus 1:16 | Hollow profession vs. genuine works | False teachers | 1 John 2:4 (“whoever says ‘I know him’ but does not keep his commandments…the truth is not in him”); James 2:14-17 (faith without works) | Echo | Ties “Sound Doctrine and Good Works” to the broader NT theme of profession-vs-practice; render consistently with the “good works” (असल काम) rendering established at 2:7, 2:14, 3:1, 3:8, 3:14. |
Chapter 2 (2:1–10 non-core; 2:11–15 core, see Part 2 below for detailed core-passage cross-references)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Titus 2:1 | Sound doctrine as foundation for household ethics | Titus | Romans 12:1-2 (transformed life flowing from doctrine); 1 Timothy 6:3 | Intra-NT Parallel | Confirms स्वस्थ शिक्षा as the governing frame for the whole household-code section; consistent with 1:9. |
| Titus 2:2-6 | Household code (older men/women, younger men/women) | Household members | Ephesians 5:22-6:4; Colossians 3:18-21; 1 Peter 3:1-7 (parallel household codes) | Intra-NT Parallel | Broad NT household-code genre; no direct OT citation. Render household-role vocabulary (Low/Medium risk items, see Glossary §I) consistently with any Ephesians/Colossians curricula developed later in this pipeline. |
| Titus 2:5 | Wives submissive to husbands; gospel’s public reputation | Younger wives | Ephesians 5:22-24; 1 Peter 3:1 | Intra-NT Parallel | Part of the ὑποτάσσω (submission) Critical cluster tracked across the letter (see Part 2). “So that the word of God may not be reviled” (βλασφημῆται) parallels 1 Timothy 6:1 and 1 Peter 2:12 — outsider-facing reputation of the gospel. |
| Titus 2:9-10 | Slaves submit to masters; adorning doctrine | Household slaves | Ephesians 6:5-8; Colossians 3:22-25; 1 Peter 2:18-20; 1 Timothy 6:1-2 | Intra-NT Parallel | Literal first-century household slavery, addressed pastorally in all these parallel texts — none endorse the institution as such; all redirect conduct toward gospel witness. “Adorn the doctrine” (κοσμῶσιν τὴν διδασκαλίαν) is a unique Titus phrase with no direct parallel elsewhere in the NT — treat शिक्षालाई सिँगार्ने as a Titus-distinctive coinage, not a baseline-reused term. |
Chapter 3 (3:1–8 core, see Part 2; 3:9–15 non-core)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Titus 3:1-2 | Submission to civic authority | Believers, civic rulers | Romans 13:1-7 (extended treatment of submission to governing authorities); 1 Peter 2:13-17 | Intra-NT Parallel — HIGH PRIORITY | This is the single most important intra-curriculum cross-reference in Titus. Romans 13:1-7 is the fuller doctrinal treatment; Titus 3:1 is its brief pastoral echo. RENDERING-CONSISTENCY RULE: the Nepali term for ὑποτάσσω (“submit/be subject”) MUST be identical in both curricula (baseline establishes अधीनमा रहनु for Romans 13; Titus reuses it exactly, per Part 2 below). Both passages carry the identical Nepali doctrinal risk note regarding the 1854 Muluki Ain’s caste-based state-codified submission. |
| Titus 3:3 | Pre-conversion vice-list | Paul, “we” (all believers) | Ephesians 2:1-3; Ephesians 4:17-19; Colossians 3:5-8; Romans 1:21-31; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 | Intra-NT Parallel | Titus 3:3 is a compact restatement of the Romans 1:21-31 pattern (universal human depravity before grace) — same rhetorical function as Romans 1 in the letter’s argument. Render vice terms consistently in style/register with any existing Romans 1 Nepali renderings, though exact lexical items differ. |
| Titus 3:4-7 | Grace, mercy, regeneration, justification, heirship | God, Christ, Holy Spirit, believers | See Part 2 detailed table below — this is the letter’s doctrinal core, paralleling Romans 3:21-26, Romans 4, Romans 5:1-11, Romans 8:1-17, and Ephesians 2:4-9 extensively | Multiple (Allusion/Typology/Intra-NT Parallel) | See Part 2. |
| Titus 3:9 | Foolish controversies; genealogies; quarrels about the law | Titus, congregation | 1 Timothy 1:4 (“myths and endless genealogies… rather than the stewardship of God that is by faith”); 1 Timothy 6:4; 2 Timothy 2:23 | Intra-NT Parallel | Same “Avoiding Divisive Controversies” cluster as 1:14; “quarrels about the law” (μάχαι νομικαί) built on baseline व्यवस्था — consistent across Romans (where νόμος disputes are central to chs. 2-4, 7) and Titus. |
| Titus 3:10-11 | Divisive person; church discipline | Titus, congregation | Matthew 18:15-17 (progressive confrontation pattern); 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15 | Echo / Intra-NT Parallel | ”After one or two warnings” models the same graduated-discipline pattern taught by Jesus in Matthew 18; render to preserve the patient, non-punitive tone. |
| Titus 3:12-15 | Personal greetings, closing instructions | Artemas, Tychicus, Zenas, Apollos | Standard Pauline epistolary closing convention (cf. Romans 16; Colossians 4:7-18) | Intra-NT Parallel (genre) | No doctrinal-risk terms; proper names should follow established Nepali Bible transliteration conventions once confirmed (none of these names currently appear in the Romans baseline glossary — flag for a proper-name transliteration decision in Phase 2, likely low-risk). |
PART 2 — Core Passage Detailed Cross-References (Titus 2:11–3:8)
This section expands the cross-references embedded in the core passage, since Titus 2:11–3:8 is the theological anchor of the curriculum and contains the highest concentration of typology and Romans-parallel material in the letter.
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Titus 2:11 | Grace appearing; universal scope | God | Isaiah 52:10 (“salvation to the ends of the earth”); Luke 2:10-11 (“good news of great joy…for all people”); Romans 5:15, 5:20-21 (grace abounding); Romans 1:16 (salvation “to everyone who believes”) | Allusion / Intra-NT Parallel | RENDERING-CONSISTENCY RULE: “salvation” here must use baseline उद्धार exactly as in Romans, never मुक्ति/मोक्ष/निर्वाण. “All people” (πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις) must retain Romans’ unqualified universality per the baseline’s “universal_scope_of_gospel” doctrine — directly relevant given Nepal’s Muluki Ain caste-hierarchy history, identical sensitivity to Romans 3:23/10:12-13. |
| Titus 2:12 | Grace’s training; renunciation of worldly passions | God’s grace (personified); believers | Romans 12:2 (“do not be conformed to this world/age,” same αἰών root as “present age”); Galatians 1:4 (“this present evil age”); 1 John 2:15-17 (“do not love the world”) | Intra-NT Parallel | ”Present age” (νῦν αἰών) is the identical eschatological frame Paul uses in Romans 12:2 and Galatians 1:4 — a single linear era awaiting Christ’s return, NOT the cyclical yuga-cosmology a Nepali reader might otherwise associate with युग. Recommend identical clarifying note wherever αἰών appears across Romans and Titus curricula. |
| Titus 2:13 | Blessed hope; glorious appearing; deity of Christ | Jesus Christ | Isaiah 43:11 (“I am the LORD, and besides me there is no savior”); Isaiah 45:21; 2 Peter 1:1 (near-identical Greek construction, “our God and Savior Jesus Christ”); 1 Thessalonians 1:10; Philippians 3:20; 2 Timothy 4:8 | Allusion (OT) / Intra-NT Parallel (near-verbatim NT parallel) | CRITICAL TYPOLOGICAL/THEOLOGICAL NOTE: Isaiah’s exclusive divine-Savior claims (Yahweh alone saves) are here applied directly to Jesus Christ — the strongest textual basis, alongside 2 Peter 1:1, for the Deity of Christ doctrine in this letter. The Nepali rendering of “great God and Savior” (महान् परमेश्वर र हाम्रा उद्धारकर्ता) must preserve the single-referent grammar (Sharp’s rule) exactly as required in the semantic analysis; if a 2 Peter curriculum is ever produced in this pipeline, its rendering of 2 Peter 1:1 MUST match this Titus 2:13 rendering for consistency, since both verses share nearly identical Greek syntax making the same theological claim. |
| Titus 2:14 | Redemption; treasured possession; good works | Jesus Christ; the redeemed people | Exodus 19:5 (“you shall be my treasured possession,” LXX περιούσιος); Deuteronomy 7:6, 14:2, 26:18; Ezekiel 37:23; Psalm 130:8 (LXX 129:8, “he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities”); 1 Peter 2:9 (“a people for his own possession,” nearly identical Greek); Ephesians 2:10 (“created…for good works”) | Typology (strong) + Allusion | MAJOR TYPOLOGICAL CROSS-REFERENCE. Israel’s Exodus-covenant identity as God’s treasured possession (Exodus 19:5) is directly echoed in the Greek vocabulary (περιούσιος) and is now applied to the redeemed multi-ethnic Church. This is the same theological move Peter makes in 1 Peter 2:9 and the same trajectory Romans 9:25-26 traces (quoting Hosea to show Gentiles becoming “my people”). RENDERING-CONSISTENCY RULE: render आफ्नो निजी जन consistently with however “God’s people/treasured possession” language is rendered in any future 1 Peter curriculum, and note explicitly (per baseline’s Election and Unity-of-Jews-and-Gentiles doctrines) that this is grace-based covenant inclusion, NOT a caste-like exclusive privilege — the surrounding universal “all people” of 2:11 guards this reading. “Redeem…from all lawlessness” echoes Psalm 130:8’s “redeem Israel from all his iniquities” — render छुटकारा दिनु consistently with how Romans renders λύτρωσις/ἀπολύτρωσις language if present (Romans itself does not use λυτρόω directly but the concept underlies Romans 3:24’s ἀπολύτρωσις, “redemption,” rendered there — confirm baseline Romans rendering of “redemption” in Romans 3:24 and reconcile with Titus 2:14’s छुटकारा दिनु for full-pipeline consistency). |
| Titus 2:15 | Authoritative teaching | Titus | 1 Timothy 4:11-13 (parallel charge to Timothy to teach with authority) | Intra-NT Parallel | Pastoral-Epistles-cluster parallel; no OT background required. |
| Titus 3:1 | Submission to civic authority | Believers | Romans 13:1-7 (extended parallel treatment — see Chapter 3 table above); 1 Peter 2:13-17 | Intra-NT Parallel — HIGH PRIORITY | See Chapter 3 table entry above; this is the single most load-bearing cross-curriculum consistency point in the whole book. |
| Titus 3:2 | Gentleness toward all | Believers | Philippians 4:5 (“let your gentleness/reasonableness be known to all”); James 3:17 | Echo | Low risk; general ethical parallel. |
| Titus 3:3 | Universal pre-conversion depravity | Paul, “we” | Romans 1:21-31; Ephesians 2:1-3, 4:17-19; Colossians 3:5-8 | Intra-NT Parallel (structural twin of Romans’ argument) | See Chapter 3 table above. Functions in Titus exactly as Romans 1:18-3:20 functions in Romans: establishing universal need before presenting grace (3:4-7 ≈ Romans 3:21-26). |
| Titus 3:4 | Kindness and love of God appearing | God (“our Savior”) | Same ἐπιφάνεια family as 2:11, 2:13 (see below); Romans 2:4 (“God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance,” same χρηστότης root) | Intra-NT Parallel | RENDERING-CONSISTENCY RULE, ἐπιφάνεια FAMILY: the verb ἐπεφάνη (“appeared”) occurs at 2:11 and again at 3:4, bracketing the entire core passage as an intentional literary inclusio. Titus 1:3’s ἐφανέρωσεν (“manifested”) is the same semantic family, and 2:13’s ἐπιφάνειαν (“appearing,” of the Second Coming) is the noun form. Nepali translation MUST render all four consistently within their distinct grammatical roles: प्रकट भयो for the verb (1:3-echo, 2:11, 3:4) and महिमामय प्रकटीकरण for the noun describing Christ’s future glorious appearing (2:13) — never using अवतार language for any of the four, per the Critical Incarnation rule shared with baseline. “Kindness” (χρηστότης) echoes Romans 2:4’s identical Greek word, rendered there in the Romans package — reconcile Titus’s भलमानसता with the actual Romans 2:4 Nepali rendering if it differs, to keep the χρηστότης word-family consistent across both curricula. |
| Titus 3:5 | Salvation not by works; washing; regeneration; renewal by the Spirit | God, Holy Spirit | Romans 3:20-28 (“not by works of the law…but by faith”); Ephesians 2:8-9 (near-identical “not by works, so that no one may boast”); Ezekiel 36:25-27 (sprinkling clean water, new heart, new spirit — the OT background for “washing” and “renewal”); John 3:5 (“born of water and the Spirit”); Romans 4 (Abraham justified by faith, not works) | Typology + Allusion + Intra-NT Parallel (this is the doctrinal center of the letter) | HIGHEST-PRIORITY CROSS-REFERENCE IN THE BOOK. This verse is Titus’s direct doctrinal counterpart to Romans 3:20-28 and Ephesians 2:8-9 — the same “Salvation by Grace not Works” argument condensed into a single clause. RENDERING-CONSISTENCY RULE: “works” (ἔργων), “righteousness” (δικαιοσύνῃ, baseline धार्मिकता), “mercy” (ἔλεος, दया), and “saved” (ἔσωσεν, baseline उद्धार गर्नुभयो) must match the Romans renderings of the parallel terms in Romans 3:20-28 and 4:1-8 exactly, since these two passages will very likely be taught side-by-side. Ezekiel 36:25-27’s “sprinkle clean water…new heart…new spirit” is the OT conceptual root of “washing of regeneration” — this typological background should be surfaced in teaching notes to reinforce that धोवाइ (“washing,” never स्नान) draws on a specifically Israelite prophetic-promise pattern, not a generic ritual-bathing category. |
| Titus 3:6 | Spirit poured out through Christ | Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ | Joel 2:28-29 (“I will pour out my Spirit”); Acts 2:17-18 (Peter’s Pentecost sermon directly quoting Joel) | Allusion (OT, via NT quotation) | Titus 3:6 echoes the same “pouring out” (ἐκχέω) vocabulary Peter uses at Pentecost when directly quoting Joel — establishing continuity between the OT prophetic promise, its Pentecost fulfillment, and its ongoing personal application to every believer at regeneration. Render खन्याउनुभयो consistently if an Acts 2 curriculum is later produced in this pipeline, to preserve the Joel-Pentecost-Titus lexical chain for readers moving between curricula. |
| Titus 3:7 | Justification; heirship; hope of eternal life | Believers | Romans 8:17 (“heirs with Christ”); Galatians 3:29, 4:7 (“heirs according to promise”); Romans 4 (justification by faith) | Intra-NT Parallel | RENDERING-CONSISTENCY RULE: “justified” (δικαιωθέντες) must use baseline धर्मी ठहराइएका exactly, matching Romans 3-5. “Heirs” (κληρονόμοι, उत्तराधिकारी) should be checked against Romans 8:17’s Nepali rendering of the same Greek word for exact-term consistency, since both passages tie heirship directly to the Adoption doctrine (baseline दत्तक पुत्रता). |
| Titus 3:8 | Trustworthy saying; good works as fruit | Titus, believers | 1 Timothy 1:15, 3:1, 4:9; 2 Timothy 2:11 (the recurring Pastoral-Epistles “trustworthy saying” formula) | Intra-NT Parallel | Pastoral-Epistles-cluster formula; विश्वासयोग्य वचन should be the fixed rendering wherever this formula recurs if 1-2 Timothy curricula are added. Closes the inclusio begun at 2:11 (grace appearing → training → good works as fruit, never ground, of salvation) — the letter’s central “Sound Doctrine and Good Works” and “Salvation by Grace not Works” doctrines are woven together in this single closing verse. |
PART 3 — Messianic References and Typology Summary
| Type | Passage(s) | Description | Nepali Rendering Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deity of Christ via OT divine-Savior language | Titus 2:13 (cf. Isaiah 43:11, 45:21) | Yahweh’s exclusive self-designation as sole Savior applied directly to Jesus Christ. | महान् परमेश्वर र हाम्रा उद्धारकर्ता — grammar must be preserved per Sharp’s rule; mandatory theologian review. |
| Israel-as-treasured-possession typology extended to the Church | Titus 2:14 (cf. Exodus 19:5; Deuteronomy 7:6; 1 Peter 2:9) | The covenant people’s Exodus-era identity becomes the redeemed, multi-ethnic Church’s identity through Christ’s self-giving. | आफ्नो निजी जन — must be read alongside 2:11’s universal “all people” to avoid a caste-like exclusivity misreading. |
| New-covenant cleansing/new-heart typology | Titus 3:5 (cf. Ezekiel 36:25-27; John 3:5) | Prophetic promise of inward renewal by water/Spirit fulfilled in regeneration. | धोवाइ / नयाँ जन्म / नवीकरण — never स्नान, never पुनर्जन्म. |
| Pentecost outpouring applied personally | Titus 3:6 (cf. Joel 2:28-29; Acts 2:17-18) | The Spirit poured out corporately at Pentecost is here applied to each believer’s individual regeneration. | खन्याउनुभयो — consistent rendering recommended across any future Acts curriculum. |
| Redemption-from-iniquity typology | Titus 2:14 (cf. Psalm 130:8) | Christ’s self-giving redemption echoes the Psalmist’s confidence in God’s future redemption of Israel from all iniquities. | छुटकारा दिनु — never मुक्त/मुक्ति. |
Non-typological pagan citation (distinct category, flagged separately): Titus 1:12 quotes the Cretan poet Epimenides, not Scripture. This is structurally similar to Paul’s citations of Greek literature in Acts 17:28 and 1 Corinthians 15:33, forming a minor recognizable pattern of Pauline rhetorical practice, but it carries no typological or messianic weight and must never be rendered using अगमवक्ता (which belongs exclusively to the baseline’s Inspiration-of-Scripture doctrine).
PART 4 — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations and Parallel Passages (Titus ↔ Romans)
Because Romans is the anchor curriculum of this pipeline and Titus shares extensive doctrinal and lexical territory with it, the following consistency rules are mandatory for Phase 2:
- Submission to authority (ὑποτάσσω): Titus 2:5, 2:9, 3:1 MUST use the identical Nepali term as Romans 13:1-7 for ὑποτάσσω/ὑποτάσσεσθαι — baseline establishes अधीनमा रहनु. Both curricula share the identical Muluki Ain caste-hierarchy sensitivity note; theologian review required at every occurrence in both curricula.
- Grace/works contrast: Titus 3:5 and 3:8 MUST use अनुग्रह (grace) and preserve the “not by works” negation with the same force as Romans 3:20-28, 4:1-8, and 11:5-6. Do not soften “not by works done by us in righteousness” into a partial or qualified exclusion.
- Salvation vocabulary: Titus 1:3-4, 2:10-11, 2:13, 3:4-6 MUST use baseline उद्धार / उद्धारकर्ता exactly as in Romans; never मुक्ति, मोक्ष, or निर्वाण in either curriculum.
- Justification vocabulary: Titus 3:7’s धर्मी ठहराइएका must match Romans 3-5’s rendering of δικαιόω exactly — this is a verbatim-consistency requirement per the baseline’s “Same rendering across all documents” rule.
- Heirship: Titus 3:7’s उत्तराधिकारी should be reconciled with however Romans 8:17 renders κληρονόμος, since both texts tie heirship to the Adoption doctrine (दत्तक पुत्रता).
- Kindness (χρηστότης): Titus 3:4’s भलमानसता should be checked against Romans 2:4’s rendering of the identical Greek word and reconciled if Romans uses a different Nepali term.
- Purity/clean-unclean (καθαρός): Titus 1:15’s शुद्ध should be checked against Romans 14:14, 14:20’s rendering of the same Greek word; both carry the identical Muluki Ain-era ritual-purity/caste-purity collision risk and should share a single translator’s clarifying note across both curricula.
- Redemption (λύτρωσις-family concepts): Titus 2:14’s छुटकारा दिनु should be reconciled with however Romans 3:24 renders ἀπολύτρωσις (“redemption”), to keep the ransom/redemption concept-field lexically unified across the pipeline.
- “Present age” (αἰών): Titus 2:12’s वर्तमान युग and Romans 12:2’s rendering of the same eschatological frame should carry an identical clarifying note distinguishing linear, historical “this age” from Hindu yuga-cosmology’s cyclical ages.
- Epiphany-family terms (ἐπιφάνεια/ἐπιφαίνω/φανερόω): All four occurrences within Titus itself (1:3, 2:11, 2:13, 3:4) must be rendered with the internally consistent scheme given in Part 2 above (प्रकट भयो for the verb; महिमामय प्रकटीकरण for the noun of Christ’s future appearing). If a 2 Timothy curriculum is added later (2 Timothy 1:10, 4:1, 4:8 use the same word-family), that curriculum must adopt the identical scheme.
Chapters Reviewed With No Further Cross-Reference Items
All three chapters of Titus (1, 2, 3) have been reviewed in full above; no chapter or section was found to be free of load-bearing cross-reference material. Sections 2:6-8 (younger men, Titus’s own example) and 3:12-15 (personal greetings/closing) contain only Low-risk general vocabulary and standard Pauline epistolary convention, noted in the Chapter 3 table above, and require no further theological cross-referencing beyond what is already documented.
