Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Revelation | English → Nepali
Purpose and Method
This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every significant parallel to the Romans curriculum already delivered in this pipeline, across the entire book of Revelation (chapters 1–22). It builds directly on 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md and does not re-derive risk ratings already fixed there; it cross-references them. Its purpose is to give Phase 2 translators and reviewers a single map of where a Nepali rendering decision in Revelation must stay consistent with (a) an Old Testament passage’s own established Nepali Bible rendering, and (b) the Romans Language Package baseline, so that a reader moving between the two curricula encounters the same theological vocabulary for the same underlying reality.
Citation normalization convention: All citations in this document use the format Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., Genesis 15:6, Romans 3:24, Revelation 21:1), with Arabic numerals throughout, hyphens for verse ranges (Revelation 21:1-8), semicolons separating multiple non-contiguous references, and standard English book names for cross-curriculum portability. In destination-language output, book names follow the established Nepali Bible convention already fixed in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md (Romans = रोमी, Genesis = उत्पत्ति, Psalms = भजनसंग्रह, Isaiah = यशैया, Habakkuk = हबकूक, Joel = योएल); this document additionally fixes: Exodus = प्रस्थान, Ezekiel = इजकिएल, Daniel = दानिएल, Zechariah = जकरिया, Jeremiah = यर्मिया, Deuteronomy = व्यवस्था (note: NOT to be confused with the doctrinal term व्यवस्था for “law” — context disambiguates), Numbers = गन्ती, Leviticus = लेवी, 2 Samuel = २ शमूएल, 1 Kings = १ राजा, 2 Kings = २ राजा, Nahum = नहूम, Job = अय्यूब.
PART A — Chapter-by-Chapter OT Quotation and Allusion Matrix
| Passage (Revelation) | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revelation 1:7 | Return and Reign of Christ | Christ, “every eye,” “those who pierced him” | Daniel 7:13 (coming with the clouds); Zechariah 12:10 (look on him whom they pierced) | High — the “coming with clouds” image (theophany/parousia) must retain Daniel’s divine-sovereignty force, not read as a generic weather metaphor. |
| Revelation 1:8 | Sovereignty of God over History | God (“the Lord God”) | Isaiah 44:6; Isaiah 41:4 (“I am the first and the last”) | Critical — अल्फा र ओमेगा / सर्वसामर्थी must echo Isaiah’s absolute, unrivaled divine claim; see baseline παντοκράτωρ note in 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Revelation 1:12-16 | Deity of Christ; Sovereignty of God | Christ (“one like a son of man”) | Daniel 7:9; Daniel 10:5-6; Ezekiel 1:26-28 | High — the composite theophanic description must not be flattened into ordinary royal-portrait language; it identifies Christ with the divine Ancient of Days/glory-appearance of Ezekiel and Daniel. |
| Revelation 1:17-18 | Sovereignty of God; Resurrection of Christ | Christ | Isaiah 44:6; Isaiah 41:4; Job 38:17 (gates of death) | High — “keys of Death and Hades” must read as Christ’s sovereign authority won through his own resurrection (Revelation 1:5), not a borrowed or negotiated power. |
| Revelation 1:20 | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | Seven churches (lampstands) | Zechariah 4:2-6 | Medium — establishes the book’s own interpretive key (symbol explicitly explained by the text itself); a pattern to be taught explicitly for the whole book. |
| Revelation 2:7 | New Heaven and New Earth (proleptic) | The redeemed | Genesis 2:9; Genesis 3:22-24 | High — first appearance of “tree of life,” recovering what was barred in Eden; see full treatment at Revelation 22:2 and the amṛta-collision note already flagged in 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Revelation 2:14 | Judgment of the Wicked | Balaam, Balak | Numbers 22-25; Numbers 31:16 | Medium — requires OT narrative background note; Balaam functions as a type of the compromised false teacher. |
| Revelation 2:17 | Assurance of Final Victory; Grace | The redeemed | Exodus 16:32-34 (hidden manna) | Low-Medium — background note on Exodus provision needed for a Nepali audience with low OT narrative literacy (per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md audience note). |
| Revelation 2:20-23 | Judgment of the Wicked | Jezebel | 1 Kings 16:31; 2 Kings 9:22 | Medium — Jezebel functions typologically (idolatry/seduction into compromise), not as commentary on any individual woman; pastoral framing required, consistent with the πόρνη note at Revelation 17. |
| Revelation 2:26-27 | Return and Reign of Christ | The redeemed; Christ | Psalm 2:8-9 (rod of iron) | High — messianic psalm applied first to Christ (Revelation 19:15) and derivatively shared with overcomers; must not blur the distinction between Christ’s own reign and the believer’s participation in it (cf. Revelation 22:5 note in 08_core_glossary.md). |
| Revelation 3:7 | Davidic Covenant; Return and Reign of Christ | Christ | Isaiah 22:22 (key of the house of David) | High — reuses baseline David = दाऊद; “key of David” must retain its Davidic-covenant, royal-authority force. |
| Revelation 3:9 | Sovereignty of God; Unity of Jews and Gentiles | ”synagogue of Satan” | Isaiah 60:14 | High — Isaiah’s original promise (nations bowing before restored Israel) is repurposed for the church; requires careful, non-inflammatory framing given the parallel note on this phrase in 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch. 2. |
| Revelation 3:12 | New Heaven and New Earth | Christ; the overcomer | 1 Kings 7:21 (temple pillars, background image) | Low-Medium. |
| Revelation 3:14 | Sovereignty of God; Judgment | Christ (“the Amen, the faithful and true witness”) | Isaiah 65:16 | High — first occurrence of ἀληθινός (“true”); anchors the polemical true/counterfeit theme developed through the whole book (see Revelation 19:11; 21:5 in 07_semantic_analysis.md). |
| Revelation 4:1-6 | Sovereignty of God over History | God (throne vision) | Ezekiel 1:1-28; Isaiah 6:1-4; 1 Kings 22:19 | High — the entire heavenly throne-room scene is a deliberate composite of Israel’s classic prophetic call-visions; must be taught as continuous with, not a departure from, OT revelation of God’s glory. |
| Revelation 4:6-9 | Worship of the Lamb; Sovereignty of God | Four living creatures | Ezekiel 1:5-10; Ezekiel 10:14; Isaiah 6:2-3 | High — “Holy, holy, holy” (4:8) directly reuses Isaiah’s Trisagion; the established baseline पवित्र must render this exactly as elsewhere. |
| Revelation 5:1-5 | Sovereignty of God; Messianic Promise | The Lion of Judah/Root of David; the Lamb | Genesis 49:9-10; Isaiah 11:1,10; Ezekiel 2:9-10; Daniel 12:4 | Critical — “Lion of the tribe of Judah” and “Root of David” are direct messianic-covenant titles; must connect explicitly to baseline’s davidic_covenant and seed_of_david entries (दाऊदको वंश). |
| Revelation 5:6 | Worship of the Lamb | The Lamb (Christ) | Isaiah 53:7 (led like a lamb to slaughter); Exodus 12 (Passover lamb) | Critical — the Suffering Servant and Passover typology converge in ἀρνίον/थुमा; see full paśu-bali caution already fixed in 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Revelation 5:9-10 | Worship of the Lamb; Kingdom Mission | The redeemed | Exodus 19:6 (“a kingdom of priests”); Isaiah 42:10 (new song) | High — reuses baseline kingdom_of_god; the “kingdom and priests” identity of believers must be taught against Nepal’s caste-linked priestly hierarchy, as already flagged for Revelation 1:6. |
| Revelation 5:11-14 | Worship of the Lamb; Sovereignty of God | Angels; every creature | Daniel 7:10 (myriads before the throne) | Medium. |
| Revelation 6:1-8 | Sovereignty of God over History; Judgment of the Wicked | Four horsemen | Zechariah 1:8-10; Zechariah 6:1-8 | High — the horsemen operate strictly within God’s sovereign permission (“was given,” “was granted”); must not read as autonomous cosmic forces. |
| Revelation 6:8 | Judgment of the Wicked | Death and Hades | Ezekiel 14:21 (sword, famine, pestilence) | Medium. |
| Revelation 6:9-11 | Vindication of the Saints; Perseverance | Martyred souls | Genesis 4:10 (Abel’s blood cries out); Psalm 79:5; Zechariah 1:12 | High — “how long, O Lord” is the classic OT cry for divine vindication; connects directly to baseline’s intercession doctrine (मध्यस्थता) and to Romans 8:36 (see Part D below). |
| Revelation 6:12-17 | Judgment of the Wicked | The wicked; “who can stand” | Isaiah 13:10; Joel 2:10,31; Isaiah 34:4; Isaiah 2:10,19; Hosea 10:8 | High — cosmic-collapse imagery is standard OT “Day of the Lord” language, not a scientific claim; must be taught within the apocalyptic-genre frame. |
| Revelation 7:1-8 | Sovereignty of God; Vindication of the Saints | 144,000 sealed | Ezekiel 9:4 (mark on the forehead of the faithful) | Medium — reinforces God’s protective-seal motif (see Revelation 7 note on σφραγίς/σφραγίζω in 08_core_glossary.md). |
| Revelation 7:9-17 | Worship of the Lamb; New Heaven and New Earth (proleptic) | The great multitude | Leviticus 23:40 (palm branches, Feast of Booths); Isaiah 49:10; Isaiah 25:8; Psalm 23 | High — combines Israel’s festival joy and Isaiah’s new-exodus comfort; “he will wipe away every tear” directly anticipates Revelation 21:4 and must be rendered identically. |
| Revelation 8:5-12 | Sovereignty of God; Judgment of the Wicked | Angels sounding trumpets | Exodus 7:20-21 (Nile to blood); Exodus 9:23-24 (hail); Exodus 10:21-23 (darkness); Joel 2:30 | High — the trumpet judgments are a deliberate re-enactment of the Exodus plague-pattern; teaching material should make this typological structure explicit (see Part C below). |
| Revelation 9:1-11 | Judgment of the Wicked; Sovereignty of God | Locusts from the abyss; Abaddon/Apollyon | Exodus 10:12-15 (locust plague); Joel 1:2-2:11; Job 26:6; Job 28:22 | High — locust imagery reuses Joel’s “day of the Lord” army-of-locusts language; the abyss/Abaddon must be kept distinct from Hades and the lake of fire (see 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch. 9). |
| Revelation 9:20-21 | Judgment of the Wicked | Idolaters | Psalm 115:4-7; Daniel 5:23 | High — reuses the classic OT anti-idol polemic (idols cannot see, hear, or act); connects directly to the Romans 1:23-25 idolatry-critique parallel (Part D below). |
| Revelation 10:1-7 | Sovereignty of God over History; Inspiration of Scripture | The mighty angel; the mystery of God | Daniel 12:7 (oath by the Eternal One); Ezekiel 2:8-3:3 (eating the scroll) | High — “the mystery of God will be finished” must retain the disclosed-not-esoteric sense already fixed for μυστήριον in 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Revelation 10:9-10 | Inspiration of Scripture | John | Ezekiel 3:1-3; Jeremiah 15:16 (sweet then bitter scroll) | Medium. |
| Revelation 11:1-2 | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | The temple; the nations | Ezekiel 40-42 (temple measurement); Zechariah 2:1-5 | Medium — symbolic measurement, not architectural literalism, per the Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine. |
| Revelation 11:3-13 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution | Two witnesses | 1 Kings 17:1 (Elijah, drought); Exodus 7 (Moses, plagues); Zechariah 4:2-14 (two olive trees/lampstands) | Critical — the witnesses embody the μάρτυς/साक्षी doctrine at its most costly (death and vindicating resurrection); given Revelation’s own martyria vocabulary and Nepal’s recent history of restricted Christian witness (already flagged High/Critical in prior artifacts), this passage carries unusual weight. |
| Revelation 11:15 | Sovereignty of God; Return and Reign of Christ | Christ | Daniel 2:44; Daniel 7:14,27; Psalm 2 | Critical — “the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord” is the book’s structural pivot; must reuse baseline परमेश्वरको राज्य and प्रभु exactly, without qualification. |
| Revelation 11:19 | Sovereignty of God; New Heaven and New Earth (proleptic) | The ark of the covenant | Exodus 25:10-22 | Medium — anticipates the unmediated divine presence of Revelation 21:3,22. |
| Revelation 12:1-2 | Sovereignty of God over History | The woman (covenant people) | Genesis 37:9-10; Isaiah 66:7-8 | Medium — corporate/covenantal symbol (Israel/the messianic community), not a private devotional figure; guard against confusion with any Nepali mother-goddess veneration pattern. |
| Revelation 12:3-4 | Assurance of Final Victory over Evil | The dragon | Daniel 7:7-24 (composite beast imagery) | High — reinforces the dragon’s identity as an anti-God imperial/spiritual power, continuous with Daniel’s beast-empires. |
| Revelation 12:5 | Messianic Promise; Return and Reign of Christ | The male child (Christ) | Psalm 2:9; Isaiah 66:7 | Critical — direct messianic-psalm application to Christ; must connect to Revelation 19:15’s identical rod-of-iron language. |
| Revelation 12:7-9 | Sovereignty of God; Assurance of Final Victory | Michael; the dragon | Daniel 10:13,21; Daniel 12:1; Genesis 3:1,14-15 | Critical — “that ancient serpent” explicitly identifies the dragon with Genesis 3’s tempter; the entire cosmic-conflict narrative is framed as the final resolution of the Genesis 3:15 protoevangelium. This is the single most important OT-typological anchor for Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil and must be taught explicitly. |
| Revelation 12:10 | Assurance of Final Victory; Vindication of the Saints | The accuser | Job 1:6-11; Zechariah 3:1-2 | High — “the accuser” reuses the OT courtroom-Satan figure; his defeat is now final and total, unlike Job’s ongoing test. |
| Revelation 12:14 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness | The woman | Exodus 19:4 (eagle’s wings); Daniel 7:25; Daniel 12:7 | Medium. |
| Revelation 13:1-7 | Judgment of the Wicked; Sovereignty of God | The beast from the sea | Daniel 7:2-7,8,25 | Critical — the beast is a deliberate composite of Daniel’s four empire-beasts, now unified into one final anti-God power; must be taught as historically-rooted apocalyptic symbolism (per the Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine), not decoded into a single modern nation-state. |
| Revelation 13:11-15 | Judgment of the Wicked | The second beast; the image | Daniel 3 (Nebuchadnezzar’s image, compelled worship) | High — direct typological parallel: compelled worship of a state-sponsored image, historically resonant given Nepal’s own monarchy-era state religious ideology already flagged in the baseline (अवतार note). |
| Revelation 14:1 | Worship of the Lamb; Messianic Promise | The Lamb on Mount Zion | Psalm 2:6; Joel 2:32 | High. |
| Revelation 14:8 | Judgment of the Wicked | Babylon | Isaiah 21:9; Jeremiah 51:7-8 | Medium — see full Babylon treatment at Revelation 17-18 below. |
| Revelation 14:10 | Judgment of the Wicked | The wicked | Genesis 19:24 (Sodom); Isaiah 51:17; Psalm 75:8 | High — “fire and sulfur” reuses the Sodom-judgment pattern; connects to Revelation 21:8’s identical vocabulary. |
| Revelation 14:14-16 | Judgment of the Wicked; Return and Reign of Christ | ”One like a son of man” | Daniel 7:13; Joel 3:13 | Critical — the “son of man” title is Christ’s own self-designation of divine authority (cf. Daniel 7:13-14), reused with judicial force here. |
| Revelation 14:19-20 | Judgment of the Wicked | — | Isaiah 63:1-6; Joel 3:13 | High — winepress imagery anticipates Revelation 19:15’s identical image, applied there directly to Christ. |
| Revelation 15:3-4 | Sovereignty of God; Worship of the Lamb | Moses; the Lamb | Exodus 15:1-18 (Song of the Sea); Deuteronomy 32; Psalm 86:9; Jeremiah 10:7 | High — “the song of Moses and of the Lamb” fuses the first (Exodus) and final (eschatological) deliverances into a single act of praise; a key New-Exodus typological link (see Part C). |
| Revelation 15:8 | Sovereignty of God | God’s glory filling the temple | Exodus 40:34-35; 1 Kings 8:10-11; Isaiah 6:4 | Medium — reuses baseline महिमा; the glory-cloud motif recurs at the tabernacle’s founding, the temple’s dedication, and here. |
| Revelation 16:1-21 | Judgment of the Wicked; Sovereignty of God | Seven bowls | Exodus 7-11 (the Egyptian plagues, throughout) | High — the bowl judgments are the climactic re-enactment of the Exodus plague-cycle already begun with the trumpets (Revelation 8-9); this typological structure (Exodus plagues → final judgment) should be taught as a unified pattern, not independently for each chapter. |
| Revelation 16:16 | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation; Judgment of the Wicked | Armageddon | Judges 5:19; 2 Kings 23:29-30 (Megiddo as a historic battlefield) | Low-Medium — symbolic staging-ground per the apocalyptic-genre convention already fixed in 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Revelation 17:1-6 | Judgment of the Wicked | The great prostitute | Jeremiah 51:7,13; Nahum 3:4; Ezekiel 16; Ezekiel 23 | High — reuses the OT prophetic pattern of a corrupt city/nation portrayed as an unfaithful woman; corporate/systemic symbolism, requiring the pastoral framing already noted in 08_core_glossary.md for πόρνη. |
| Revelation 17:14 | Return and Reign of Christ; Lordship of Christ | The Lamb | Daniel 2:47; Deuteronomy 10:17 | Critical — “King of kings and Lord of lords” first occurrence; see full treatment at Revelation 19:16 below and in 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Revelation 18:2-3 | Judgment of the Wicked | Babylon | Isaiah 13:21-22; Isaiah 21:9; Jeremiah 50-51 | Medium. |
| Revelation 18:4 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness | ”Come out of her, my people” | Jeremiah 51:45; Jeremiah 51:6; Isaiah 48:20 | High — a direct call to covenant separation, echoing the Exodus-from-Babylon pattern; connects to the baseline’s separation_unto_gods_service doctrine (परमेश्वरको सेवाको निम्ति अलग गरिएको). |
| Revelation 18:7-9 | Judgment of the Wicked | Babylon; kings; merchants | Isaiah 47:7-9; Ezekiel 26-28 (lament over Tyre) | Medium — the merchant-lament genre is reused wholesale from Ezekiel’s Tyre oracle; requires the pastoral balance already noted in 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch. 18 regarding commerce critique. |
| Revelation 18:21-24 | Judgment of the Wicked | Babylon | Jeremiah 51:63-64; Jeremiah 25:10 | Medium. |
| Revelation 19:1-6 | Worship of the Lamb; Sovereignty of God | The heavenly multitude | Psalm 104:35; Psalm 106:1; Psalm 93:1; Psalm 97:1 | Medium — reuses baseline हल्लेलूयाह; “the Lord reigns” directly echoes the enthronement psalms. |
| Revelation 19:11-16 | Return and Reign of Christ; Lordship of Christ | Christ (rider on the white horse) | Isaiah 63:1-6 (blood-stained garments, winepress); Psalm 2:9 (rod of iron); Daniel 7:9-10 | Critical — this is the climactic composite of nearly every messianic-warrior OT text in the book; “Faithful and True” (πιστὸς καὶ ἀληθινός), “the Word of God,” and “King of kings and Lord of lords” converge here and must all retain their full, unsoftened force per 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Revelation 19:17-21 | Judgment of the Wicked | The beast; the kings of the earth | Ezekiel 39:17-20 (the great supper); Ezekiel 38-39 (Gog and Magog imagery, reused proleptically) | High — the “great supper” grotesquely inverts the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9), a deliberate literary contrast that should be preserved in teaching notes. |
| Revelation 20:1-3 | Sovereignty of God; Assurance of Final Victory | The dragon bound | Isaiah 24:21-22 | Medium — reinforces that Satan’s activity is always within God’s sovereign limits, never independent power. |
| Revelation 20:4-6 | Resurrection of Christ (typological extension); Return and Reign of Christ | The redeemed; “the first resurrection” | Daniel 7:22,27 | Critical — “the first resurrection” must retain baseline’s Critical पुनरुत्थान rendering with full force; see extended note in 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch. 20. |
| Revelation 20:7-9 | Judgment of the Wicked | Gog and Magog | Ezekiel 38-39 | Medium — proper names transliterated per baseline convention (गोग र मागोग); reused typologically, not restricted to Ezekiel’s original historical referents. |
| Revelation 20:11-15 | Judgment of the Wicked; Vindication of the Saints | The dead; the book of life | Daniel 7:9-10; Daniel 12:1-2; Psalm 69:28; Isaiah 65:6 | Critical — final judgment “according to what they had done” must be handled with the same care flagged in 08_core_glossary.md (evidentiary works vs. forensic justification by faith); mandatory theologian review. |
| Revelation 21:1 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Isaiah 65:17; Isaiah 66:22 | Critical — direct quotation/echo of Isaiah’s “new heavens and new earth” promise; see full treatment in 07_semantic_analysis.md Part A. |
| Revelation 21:2 | Church as Bride of Christ | New Jerusalem | Isaiah 61:10; Isaiah 62:5; Ezekiel 16 | High — reuses the OT bride/bridegroom covenant-marriage metaphor for God and his people; see νύμφη note in 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Revelation 21:3 | New Heaven and New Earth; Sovereignty of God | God dwelling with man | Ezekiel 37:27; Leviticus 26:11-12; Exodus 6:7; Zechariah 8:8 | High — direct quotation of the covenant-presence formula (“I will be their God, they will be my people”); this exact formula recurs at Revelation 21:7. |
| Revelation 21:4 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Isaiah 25:8; Isaiah 35:10 | High — near-direct quotation of Isaiah’s promised reversal of death and sorrow; must be rendered consistently with Revelation 7:17, which anticipates this same verse. |
| Revelation 21:5 | Sovereignty of God; New Heaven and New Earth | God on the throne | Isaiah 43:19 (“I am doing a new thing”) | High. |
| Revelation 21:6 | Grace; New Heaven and New Earth | God | Isaiah 55:1 (“come, buy wine and milk without money”) | High — δωρεάν (“without payment”) directly echoes Isaiah’s gracious invitation; see Part D below for the direct Romans 3:24 parallel. |
| Revelation 21:7 | Adoption into God’s Family | The overcomer | 2 Samuel 7:14; Psalm 89:26-27 | High — direct quotation of the Davidic covenant sonship formula, now extended to all who overcome; must be kept distinct in register from Christ’s own unique Sonship (baseline: परमेश्वरका पुत्र), exactly as 07_semantic_analysis.md already requires. |
| Revelation 21:8 | Judgment of the Wicked | The condemned | Isaiah 66:24 (undying judgment imagery, background) | Critical — “second death” as final destiny; see full treatment in Part A of 07_semantic_analysis.md. |
| Revelation 21:9-27 | New Heaven and New Earth; Church as Bride of Christ | New Jerusalem | Ezekiel 40-48 (new temple/city vision); Isaiah 54:11-12 (jewel foundations); Ezekiel 48:30-35 (twelve gates named for tribes) | Critical — this entire unit is a deliberate architectural fulfillment of Ezekiel’s visionary temple-city, now transformed into a city with no separate temple at all (Revelation 21:22); the Ezekiel background must be taught to avoid the description being read as arbitrary or unrelated to Scripture’s prior revelation. |
| Revelation 21:23-26 | New Heaven and New Earth; Unity of Jews and Gentiles | The nations | Isaiah 60:1-3,11,19-20 | High — direct quotation/echo of Isaiah’s vision of nations streaming to Zion’s light; reinforces baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine in its final, consummated form. |
| Revelation 22:1-2 | New Heaven and New Earth; Grace | — | Ezekiel 47:1-12 (river from the temple); Genesis 2:9-10 (Eden’s river and tree); Zechariah 14:8 | High — deliberately fuses Eden’s beginning with Ezekiel’s temple-river vision; the amṛta-collision caution already fixed in 08_core_glossary.md applies with full force here. |
| Revelation 22:3 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Genesis 3:17-19 (the curse); Zechariah 14:11 | Medium — direct reversal of the Genesis curse; connect explicitly in teaching notes. |
| Revelation 22:4 | New Heaven and New Earth; Assurance | The redeemed | Exodus 33:20 (no one may see my face and live — now reversed/fulfilled) | High — a deliberate canonical inversion: what was once forbidden even to Moses is now the redeemed community’s permanent privilege. |
| Revelation 22:5 | Return and Reign of Christ | The redeemed | Daniel 7:18,27; Isaiah 60:19 | High — see baseline note on shared, not independent, divine reign. |
| Revelation 22:16 | Messianic Promise; Davidic Covenant | Christ | Numbers 24:17 (a star shall come out of Jacob); Isaiah 11:1,10 | Critical — “root and descendant of David” and “morning star” are direct messianic-prophecy fulfillment claims; must connect explicitly to baseline’s seed_of_david and messianic_promise doctrines. |
| Revelation 22:17 | Grace; New Heaven and New Earth | The Spirit; the Bride | Isaiah 55:1 | High — repeats 21:6’s gracious-invitation quotation; must render identically for consistency. |
| Revelation 22:18-19 | Inspiration of Scripture | — | Deuteronomy 4:2; Deuteronomy 12:32 | High — direct echo of the Torah’s own canon-closing formula, now applied to the whole of Scripture’s final book; connects to baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture doctrine. |
PART B — Messianic References Summary
| Title / Reference | Passage(s) | OT Source | Doctrinal Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lion of the tribe of Judah | Revelation 5:5 | Genesis 49:9-10 | Royal, tribal-covenant messianic title; pair with “Lamb” in the same verse for the paradox of conquering-through-sacrifice. |
| Root/Offspring of David | Revelation 5:5; 22:16 | Isaiah 11:1,10 | Reuses baseline davidic_covenant doctrine; requires OT background note per baseline’s seed_of_david entry. |
| The Lamb (slain and standing) | Revelation 5:6 and throughout | Isaiah 53:7; Exodus 12 | Critical — see full paśu-bali caution in 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Son of Man | Revelation 1:13; 14:14 | Daniel 7:13-14 | Christ’s own self-designation of divine authority to judge and reign; must not be read as a merely human-identity title. |
| The Word of God | Revelation 19:13 | John 1:1,14 (NT); background Genesis 1 | Connects to baseline incarnation doctrine (देहधारण). |
| Alpha and Omega / First and Last | Revelation 1:8,17; 21:6; 22:13 | Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; 48:12 | Applied to both God (1:8) and Christ (22:13) — a direct claim to Christ’s full deity; must be taught explicitly. |
| Morning Star | Revelation 22:16 | Numbers 24:17 | Balaam’s messianic oracle fulfilled in Christ’s self-claim; cross-reference to Revelation 2:28. |
| King of kings, Lord of lords | Revelation 17:14; 19:16 | Daniel 2:47; Deuteronomy 10:17 | Critical — see 08_core_glossary.md; zero softening given Nepal’s avatar-monarchy history. |
| Faithful and True | Revelation 19:11 | Isaiah 65:16 | Polemical anchor against every religious/political counterfeit throughout the book. |
PART C — Typological Patterns
| Type (OT) | Antitype/Fulfillment (Revelation) | Nature of Typology | Translation Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Passover Lamb (Exodus 12) | The Lamb, Christ (Revelation 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21-22) | Sacrificial deliverance type: blood applied for protection/deliverance from judgment, now fulfilled once for all | Critical — थुमा; see paśu-bali caution, 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Eden — garden, river, tree of life (Genesis 2-3) | New Jerusalem — river, tree of life, no curse (Revelation 22:1-3) | Restoration type: the beginning’s loss (exile, curse, barred access) is fully and finally reversed | High — amṛta-collision caution applies; frame as restoration/gift, not a scarce contested substance. |
| The Exodus plagues (Exodus 7-11) | The trumpet and bowl judgments (Revelation 8-9, 16) | Judgment type: God’s historical judgment on an oppressive, idolatrous empire (Egypt) prefigures his final judgment on the world-system (Babylon/the beast) | High — teach as a unified typological structure spanning multiple chapters, not isolated plague-by-plague parallels. |
| The Tabernacle/Temple, God’s dwelling among Israel (Exodus 25-40; Ezekiel 40-48) | God’s unmediated dwelling with his people; “I saw no temple” (Revelation 21:3,22) | Escalation type: mediated, localized presence → permanent, universal, unmediated presence | High — see full note on σκηνή/σκηνόω and οὐ ναὸν εἶδον in 07_semantic_analysis.md/08_core_glossary.md. |
| The Exodus/Red Sea deliverance and Song of Moses (Exodus 14-15) | The final deliverance and Song of Moses and the Lamb (Revelation 15:3-4) | Recapitulation type: the first great redemptive act of the OT and the final redemptive consummation are sung as a single act of praise | Medium-High — teach the “new exodus” motif explicitly; connects the whole book’s judgment-and-deliverance structure to Israel’s founding redemption narrative. |
| Babel/Babylon (Genesis 11; Isaiah 13-14; Jeremiah 50-51) | Babylon the Great (Revelation 14, 16-18) | Recurring-embodiment type: the archetypal human project of self-glorifying, God-defying civilization recurs across history and culminates in one final form | Medium — must be taught as symbolic of any and every anti-God system, not restricted to the ancient city or a single modern nation (already fixed in 08_core_glossary.md). |
| Israel as God’s bride/wife (Isaiah 62:5; Ezekiel 16; Hosea) | The Church as the Bride of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7-9; 21:2,9) | Covenant-relationship type: God’s covenant marriage with his OT people is fulfilled and extended to the redeemed community of Jew and Gentile united in Christ | High — see νύμφη caution, 08_core_glossary.md; corporate/covenantal, not Nepali social-marriage-custom framing. |
| Daniel’s four beasts/empires (Daniel 7) | The beast from the sea (Revelation 13) | Composite-recapitulation type: successive earthly empires opposed to God’s people culminate in one final, unified anti-God power | Critical — teach as apocalyptic-symbolic per the Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine; must not be decoded into a specific present-day nation-state. |
| Melchizedekian “kingdom of priests” (Exodus 19:6) | Believers as “a kingdom and priests” (Revelation 1:6; 5:10; 20:6) | Democratization type: a role once mediated through a distinct priestly caste is extended to the whole redeemed community | Medium — see पुजारी caution in 08_core_glossary.md, especially relevant given caste-linked Brahmin priesthood in Nepali society. |
| The ancient serpent of Eden (Genesis 3:1,14-15) | The dragon, that ancient serpent (Revelation 12:9; 20:2) | Identity type: the tempter of Genesis 3 and the final, defeated adversary of Revelation are explicitly the same being, and his defeat fulfills the Genesis 3:15 protoevangelium | Critical — the single most important OT-typological anchor for Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil; must be taught explicitly and repeatedly against Nepal’s benevolent nāga-veneration folk tradition (already flagged High in 08_core_glossary.md). |
PART D — Parallels to Romans (Same Language Pair, Same Pipeline)
Because Nepali-speaking students of this curriculum will likely have already studied, or will concurrently study, the Romans curriculum built on the baseline Language Package, the following term- and doctrine-level parallels require identical Nepali rendering across both curricula.
| Theme/Term | Romans Reference | Revelation Reference | Rendering Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grace as unmerited, freely given gift (δωρεάν/χάρις) | Romans 3:24 (“justified by his grace as a gift,” δωρεάν) | Revelation 21:6; 22:17 (δωρεάν, “without payment”) | Exact word-level parallel. Romans 3:24 already uses δωρεάν alongside χάρις. Both must render δωρεάν as सित्तैमा/निःशुल्क and explicitly tie it to अनुग्रह, per the baseline Grace doctrine’s merit-free contrast with Hindu/Buddhist karma-accounting. This is the single most direct lexical bridge between the two curricula’s core soteriology. |
| Wrath of God (ὀργή) | Romans 1:18; 2:5; 5:9 | Revelation 6:16-17; 14:10,19; 16:1,19; 19:15 | Render रीस/क्रोध consistently in both; teach as the one God’s righteous, judicial, morally consistent response to sin — never an alternating “wrathful aspect” of deity, guarding against the Bhairab/Kālī collision flagged in Revelation. |
| Righteousness/righteous acts distinction | Romans 3:21-26; 4:3-5 (forensic righteousness by faith, धार्मिकता/आरोपित धार्मिकता) | Revelation 19:8 (δικαιώματα, “righteous acts/deeds,” पवित्र जनका धर्मी कामहरू) | Must remain lexically distinct: धार्मिकता/आरोपित धार्मिकता (status received by faith) is never interchangeable with धर्मी कामहरू (visible fruit of a life already justified). Blurring these reintroduces the works-righteousness error the baseline explicitly guards against. |
| Judged according to works | Romans 2:6-11 (impartial judgment “according to what he has done”) | Revelation 20:12-13 (κρίνω κατὰ τὰ ἔργα) | Both describe works as evidence in final judgment, not as a parallel ground of justification alongside faith; render with the same care flagged Critical in 08_core_glossary.md, and cross-reference Romans 2:6 explicitly in teaching notes for Revelation 20. |
| Creation’s longing for renewal | Romans 8:19-22 (creation groaning, awaiting the revealing of God’s children) | Revelation 21:1-5 (new heaven and new earth) | Direct thematic fulfillment: Romans 8 anticipates exactly what Revelation 21 delivers. Teaching notes for Revelation 21:1-8 should explicitly cross-reference Romans 8:19-22 so students recognize the same doctrine (New Heaven and New Earth) spanning both curricula. |
| Adoption/sonship | Romans 8:14-17,23 (दत्तक पुत्रता; “Abba, Father”) | Revelation 21:7 (“he will be my son”) | Both describe believers’ adoptive, inheritance-bearing sonship; render Revelation 21:7’s υἱός in a register that echoes, but need not duplicate the compound term, दत्तक पुत्रता — teaching notes should draw the connection explicitly. |
| Confession/exaltation of Christ’s Lordship | Romans 10:9 (“Jesus is Lord,” येशू प्रभु हुनुहुन्छ) | Revelation 17:14; 19:16 (“Lord of lords”) | Both must use बासलिन baseline’s Critical प्रभु with zero softening; Revelation’s title climactically extends, and must never contradict in force, the Romans 10:9 confession. |
| Perseverance under suffering | Romans 5:3-5; 8:17-18,35-39 (सहनशीलता/धैर्य; “who shall separate us”) | Revelation 2-3 (letters to the churches); 7:14; 12:11 | Both use endurance/tribulation vocabulary (θλῖψις/उपोमोने-family terms); render consistently as active, hope-filled steadfastness, not passive or fatalistic resignation, per the shared caution against a karma-driven acceptance-of-suffering misreading. |
| Universal invitation | Romans 10:13 (quoting Joel 2:32, “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”) | Revelation 22:17 (“let the one who is thirsty come”); Revelation 7:9-10 | Both preserve unqualified universality; per the baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel doctrine (already Critical), neither passage may be softened or caste-qualified in Nepali rendering. |
| Idolatry critique | Romans 1:23-25 (exchanging God’s glory for images) | Revelation 9:20; 21:8; 22:15 (मूर्तिपूजक) | Both must retain the same मूर्तिपूजक vocabulary and the same pastoral care already established in the baseline and in 08_core_glossary.md, condemning misplaced worship without ethnographically targeting Nepali material religious culture as such. |
| Peace/rest as covenant blessing | Romans 5:1 (शान्ति, peace with God through justification) | Revelation 21:4 (no more mourning, crying, or pain) | Both describe the relational, covenantal fruit of reconciliation with God; Revelation 21:4 is the eschatological full flowering of the peace Romans 5:1 declares already secured. |
| Kingdom of God | Romans 14:17 (परमेश्वरको राज्य) | Revelation 11:15 (climactic, decisive-victory framing) | Same term, same baseline Medium risk in Romans, elevated to High in Revelation’s climactic usage per 08_core_glossary.md; render identically, note the escalation in teaching commentary only. |
| Spiritual worship/service | Romans 12:1 (λατρεία, reasonable/spiritual service) | Revelation 7:15; 22:3 (λατρεύω) | Shared root; both describe wholehearted service to God as the proper response to his grace, distinguished from ritual temple/shrine service. |
Direct OT Quotations Shared Across Romans and Revelation (Rendering-Consistency Rules)
The following OT texts are directly quoted in Romans and independently echoed or thematically paralleled in Revelation. Where the underlying Hebrew/Greek wording overlaps, the Nepali rendering must be identical in both curricula’s translation memory.
- Genesis 15:6 (Abraham’s faith credited as righteousness) — quoted Romans 4:3; thematically contrasted with Revelation 19:8’s “righteous deeds.” Rule: keep आरोपित धार्मिकता (Romans) and धर्मी कामहरू (Revelation) visibly distinct, per Part D above — this is a contrast pairing, not a wording match.
- Habakkuk 2:4 (“the righteous shall live by his faith”) — quoted Romans 1:17 (curriculum thesis verse); thematically echoed in Revelation 2:10 (“be faithful unto death”) and 14:12 (“those who… hold to the faith of Jesus”). Rule: the विश्वास root must appear consistently across all four references so students recognize the same faith-perseverance doctrine.
- Deuteronomy 32:35 (“vengeance is mine, I will repay”) — quoted Romans 12:19; echoed in Revelation 6:10 (“how long… will you avenge our blood”) and the judgment scenes of Revelation 18-19. Rule: render both with बदला/इन्साफ vocabulary reflecting God’s own reserved, judicial prerogative — never personal human vengeance nor impersonal karmic settling-of-accounts (per the baseline’s providence and Vindication of the Saints notes).
- Joel 2:32 (“everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved”) — quoted Romans 10:13; echoed Revelation 22:17. Rule: identical rendering of the universal-call structure in both (“जसले… पुकारा गर्छ” pattern); no caste- or merit-qualification permitted in either curriculum.
- Isaiah 45:23 (“every knee shall bow, every tongue confess”) — quoted Romans 14:11; echoed Revelation 5:13 and 15:4 (“all nations will worship before you”). Rule: render consistently to preserve the universal, uncoerced worship note (contrasted with the beast’s coerced worship in Revelation 13).
- Psalm 44:22 (“for your sake we are killed all day long”) — quoted Romans 8:36; echoed Revelation 6:9-11 and 12:11 (martyrdom/testimony under persecution). Rule: keep साक्षी/गवाही vocabulary consistent across both curricula’s persecution passages.
- Isaiah 52:7 / Nahum 1:15 (“how beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news”) — quoted/echoed Romans 10:15; paralleled in Revelation 14:6 (“the eternal gospel”). Rule: both must reuse baseline’s सुसमाचार exactly; Revelation 14:6’s “eternal” qualifier (अनन्त सुसमाचार) must not be treated as a different gospel, only the same gospel’s unchanging finality.
- Isaiah 59:20-21 (a Deliverer will come from Zion) — quoted Romans 11:26-27; thematically fulfilled in the New Jerusalem’s descent, Revelation 21:2,10. Rule: maintain नयाँ यरूशलेम as the fulfillment-referent in teaching notes cross-referencing Romans 11.
Summary Note on Full-Book Coverage
Every chapter of Revelation (1–22) is represented in Part A above with at least one OT quotation or allusion entry; no chapter is silently omitted. Chapters not independently listed as a full row-set above (none omitted; all 22 chapters appear at least once in Part A) have been confirmed reviewed. This cross-reference matrix, together with the messianic, typological, and Romans-parallel sections, supplies the complete inter-textual map required before Phase 2 translation memory is extended for the Revelation curriculum.
