Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — 2 Timothy (Koine Greek → Nepali)

Method and Scope

This document analyzes 2 Timothy in the original Koine Greek across all four chapters. The core passage (2 Timothy 3:14–4:5) receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other passage in the book receives chapter-level treatment of load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same fields: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning in 2 Timothy, and the Nepali destination-language rendering risk.

Baseline reuse rule: Any term already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json is reused exactly as recorded there. Such terms are marked [REUSED FROM BASELINE TM] below, with the established Nepali rendering restated for continuity, not re-derived. New terms specific to 2 Timothy’s doctrines are marked [NEW TERM] and are candidates for addition to translation memory in Phase 2.

Seven curriculum doctrines anchor this analysis: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture; Perseverance under Suffering; Guarding Sound Doctrine; Faithful Transmission of the Gospel; The Charge to Preach the Word; Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days; Assurance of Reward.

PART A — CORE PASSAGE VERSE-BY-VERSE: 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5

2 Timothy 3:14

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering Risk
continue/remain
menō
”remain, stay, abide”
dwell, persist, continue steadfastly
continue, abide, remain
Timothy is charged to stay fixed in received apostolic teaching rather than drift under pressure from false teachers (ch. 3 context).Low. No syncretism risk.
learned
emathes
”you learned”
to learn by instruction, discipleship
learned, were taught
Points to a specific, traceable chain of apostolic instruction (from Paul, and before that Lois/Eunice), not self-derived insight. Ties to Faithful Transmission of the Gospel.Low-Medium. Must not read as generic self-study.
were assured/convinced
ἐπιστώθης (πιστόω, passive)
epistōthēs
”you were made firm/persuaded”
to be convinced, confirmed, given settled certainty
were assured, were convinced, firmly believed
[NEW TERM] Cognate with πίστις (faith). Denotes settled conviction, not tentative opinion — Timothy’s faith rests on a reliable, transmitted deposit.Medium. Should echo विश्वास (TM faith) root so the connection to personal trust is not lost.

2 Timothy 3:15

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering Risk
from childhood
apo brephous
”from infancy”
earliest childhood, from birth
from childhood, from infancy
Emphasizes lifelong, formative exposure to Scripture — a household transmission pattern (cf. Lois, Eunice, 1:5).Low.
sacred writings
ta hiera grammata
”the holy/sacred letters (writings)“
the OT Scriptures as a body of sacred texts
sacred writings, holy Scriptures
[NEW TERM] Distinct Greek phrase from γραφή in v.16; refers to the OT canon Timothy was raised on. Anchors Inspiration/Sufficiency of Scripture doctrine.High. Nepali: पवित्र लेखहरू (pavitra lekhaharu). Must NOT render with धर्मशास्त्र (धर्म root) or generic शास्त्र (used for Hindu/Buddhist sacred treatises); पवित्र must mark this as uniquely set-apart divine writing.
able to make wise
dynamena sophisai
”being able to make wise”
to instruct toward wisdom, equip with discernment
able to make you wise, able to instruct
Scripture’s saving sufficiency — it is not merely informative but savingly effective.Medium. Avoid terms suggesting acquired merit through study (a risk given both Hindu shastric-learning and Buddhist textual-study traditions frame sacred study as merit-accumulating).
salvation
sōtēria
[see baseline]

Scripture’s goal is salvation through faith in Christ Jesus — not through accumulated learning itself.[REUSED FROM BASELINE TM] Critical.
faith…in Christ Jesus
pistis en Christō Iēsou
[see baseline]

The instrumental means of the wisdom Scripture gives; salvation is not automatic from possessing sacred texts.[REUSED FROM BASELINE TM] High.

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering Risk
all Scripture / every Scripture
pasa graphē
”all writing / every writing”
the entirety of the sacred canon, or each individual scripture-text
all Scripture, every Scripture, the whole of Scripture
[NEW TERM] The doctrinal anchor noun for Inspiration/Sufficiency of Scripture.Critical. Nepali: पवित्रशास्त्र (pavitra shastra), following the compound pattern already used in the baseline doctrine registry (“पवित्रशास्त्रको प्रेरणा”). Never शास्त्र alone (shared vocabulary with Hindu dharmashastra and Buddhist shastra literature) or धर्मशास्त्र.
God-breathed
theopneustos
”God-breathed, God-exhaled” (θεός + πνέω)
divinely originated, breathed out by God
God-breathed, inspired by God, given by inspiration of God
[NEW TERM] CRITICAL. The single most doctrinally load-bearing word of the core passage. Asserts direct divine origin of the text itself, not merely divinely-approved human insight.Critical. Nepali: परमेश्वर-प्रेरित (Parameshwar-prerit). Must be clearly distinguished from (a) Hindu śruti — sacred utterance “heard” by ancient sages through meditative attainment, and (b) the Buddhist sutra tradition of orally transmitted, memorized teaching. Neither of those frames divine authorship; θεόπνευστος does.
profitable
ōphelimos
”useful, beneficial, profitable”
practically beneficial
profitable, useful, beneficial
Scripture’s inspiration is not abstract; it yields concrete benefit for the church’s life.Low.

righteousness
dikaiosynē
[see baseline]

Scripture’s training aims at conformity to God’s righteous standard, received/lived out, not caste-linked social order.[REUSED FROM BASELINE TM] Critical. Never धर्म.

2 Timothy 3:17

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering Risk
complete / proficient
artios
”fitted, complete, capable”
fully qualified, adequate, complete
complete, proficient, capable, mature
[NEW TERM] The purpose-goal of Scripture’s sufficiency: a fully outfitted believer/minister.High. Recommended Nepali: पूर्ण (purna, “complete/whole”) — NOT सिद्ध, which in Nepali religious usage evokes सिद्ध पुरुष/सिद्धि, a Hindu-Tantric-Buddhist “perfected being” who has attained supernatural yogic accomplishment. पूर्ण avoids that resonance.
man of God
ho tou theou anthrōpos
”the man/person of God”
a person consecrated to and equipped for God’s service
man of God, person of God
[NEW TERM] A designation for a Spirit-equipped minister/believer, not an ascetic elite.Medium-High. Nepali: परमेश्वरका जन (Parameshwarka jan), on the pattern of TM’s पवित्र जन (saints). Must not evoke the sadhu/lama “holy man” ideal still visibly honored in Nepal.
equipped
exērtismenos
”fully furnished, equipped, outfitted”
thoroughly supplied for a task
equipped, thoroughly equipped, furnished
Scripture furnishes the believer for active ministry, not passive knowledge.Low-Medium.
good work
ergon agathon
”good deed/work”
virtuous, beneficial action
good work, good deed
The practical end-goal of Scripture’s sufficiency: active ministry, not merit accumulation.Medium. Must not be framed as karma-generating merit (पुण्य); it is the fruit of equipping, not currency toward salvation.

2 Timothy 4:1

living and dead
zōntas kai nekrous
”the living and the dead”
all humanity, whether alive or deceased at the judgment
the living and the dead
Universal scope of Christ’s judgment — no one is exempt regardless of era.Low.
his appearing
tēn epiphaneian autou
”his manifestation/appearing”
a visible, decisive appearance
his appearing, his coming, his manifestation
[NEW TERM] Refers here to Christ’s second, glorious appearing (parousia), distinct from but linked to the first appearing at his incarnation (cf. 1:10). Anchors Assurance of Reward (4:8) and the urgency of the charge.High. Nepali: प्रकटन (prakatan). Because Nepal’s Shah-dynasty kings were venerated as repeatable, living avatars of Vishnu until 2008, care must be taken that “appearing” reads as Christ’s own singular, final, personal return — not a cyclically repeatable divine descent akin to avatāra.
his kingdom
tēn basileian autou
[see baseline kingdom_of_god]

Christ’s coming reign, the goal toward which faithful ministry is oriented.[REUSED FROM BASELINE TM] Medium. Not a political/dynastic kingdom.

2 Timothy 4:2

preach, proclaim, herald
[NEW TERM] CRITICAL COMMAND. The imperative center of The Charge to Preach the Word. Not persuasive rhetoric or private opinion-sharing but authorized heraldic announcement.High. Nepali: प्रचार गर्नु (prachar garnu). Given Nepal’s 2017 Muluki Criminal Code restrictions on proselytizing, translators/reviewers must ensure the term communicates faithful gospel proclamation within the church/discipleship context this letter addresses, without inviting a recruitment-campaign register that could read as legally provocative outside its pastoral setting.
the word
ton logon
”the word”
the gospel message, the authoritative Christian proclamation
the word, the Word, the message
[NEW TERM] Shorthand for the entire apostolic gospel message just described in 3:15-17 as Scripture-grounded.High. Nepali: वचन (vachan) — the established Nepali Bible word for the authoritative divine “Word” (cf. Johannine वचन देहधारी भयो pattern already assumed by baseline’s देहधारण entry). Must denote the specific, authoritative gospel message, not any generic utterance.
in season, out of season
eukairōs akairōs
”opportunely, inopportunely”
at convenient and inconvenient times alike
in season and out of season, whether convenient or not
Idiom demanding constancy regardless of circumstance — directly relevant to Perseverance under Suffering.Low-Medium (idiom). Do not translate literally word-for-word if it obscures meaning.
reprove
elegxon
”expose, convict, reprove” (verb form of 3:16’s ἔλεγχος)
to expose fault and correct
reprove, rebuke, correct

patience

makrothymia
”long-suffering, patience”
forbearance, endurance with people
patience, long-suffering, forbearance
Ministry correction must be paired with patient forbearance, not harshness.Low.
teaching
didachē
”teaching” (cognate of διδασκαλία)
instruction, doctrine
teaching, instruction, doctrine
Ministry of correction is grounded in ongoing positive instruction, not correction alone.Medium.

2 Timothy 4:3

hygiainousēs didaskalias
”healthy teaching” (ὑγιαίνω = to be healthy)
doctrinally healthy, uncorrupted instruction

[NEW TERM] CRITICAL COMPOUND. The positive standard against which apostasy/false teaching (ch. 3) is measured — the central phrase for Guarding Sound Doctrine.High. Nepali: खरो शिक्षा (khro shiksha, “genuine/sound teaching”). Must consistently and only ever describe apostolic, Scripture-grounded teaching, never any other tradition’s “authentic teaching” claim.
will not endure
ouk anexontai
”they will not put up with / tolerate”
endure, bear with, tolerate
will not endure, will not put up with, will not tolerate
Predicts active rejection, not mere neglect, of sound doctrine — key to Apostasy doctrine.Medium.
their own passions/desires
tas idias epithymias
”their own desires”
self-centered cravings, appetites

accumulate for themselves
episōreusousin
”heap up, pile up”
to gather in abundance
will accumulate, will gather, will collect
Vivid image of consumer-style religion — collecting many teachers rather than submitting to one truth.Low-Medium.
teachers
didaskalous
[cf. 1:11 κῆρυξ…διδάσκαλος]

False teachers contrasted with Paul as authorized κῆρυξ/ἀπόστολος/διδάσκαλος (1:11).[NEW TERM] High. Never गुरु (avoid guru/lama-style spiritual-master framing, per baseline’s apostleship caution).
itching ears
knēthomenoi tēn akoēn
”being tickled/itched as to hearing”
craving novel, flattering messages
itching ears, ears that itch, craving to hear something new
[NEW TERM] Vivid idiom for insatiable appetite for novel, flattering teaching — key image for Apostasy and False Teachers.Medium. Nepali idiom: कान चिलाउने. May need brief explanatory gloss for readers unfamiliar with the English-origin idiom; the underlying sense (craving something new and self-flattering to hear) must be preserved even if rendered non-literally.

”the myths, fables”
invented stories without factual basis, speculative fables
myths, fables, tales
[NEW TERM] Fabricated religious speculation opposed to apostolic truth (cf. 1 Tim 1:4, 4:7; Titus 1:14).High. Nepali: गप्प कथा (gapa katha, “fabricated/idle tale”). Must be rendered so it clearly signals invented falsehood, not simply “traditional story” — Nepal’s Puranic and Jataka narrative traditions are culturally prestigious, and a poor rendering could seem to insult revered cultural literature rather than specifically flag doctrinal fabrication opposed to the apostolic gospel.
wander off / turn aside
ektrapēsontai
”will be turned aside, will be diverted”
to be deflected from a path
will wander off, will be turned aside
Picture of departure from a fixed path — apostasy as deviation from the “straight” apostolic way (cf. ὀρθοτομέω, 2:15).Medium.

kakopathēson
”suffer evil/hardship”
endure affliction, bear hardship
endure suffering, endure hardship, suffer hardship
[NEW TERM] Core verb for Perseverance under Suffering, echoing 1:8 (συγκακοπάθησον) and 2:3, forming a thread across the whole letter.High. कष्ट सहनु (kashta sahanu). Prefer कष्ट over दुःख for this specific persecution/ministry-hardship sense: दुःख is also the Nepali rendering of the Buddhist First Noble Truth (dukkha — the inherent, universal suffering of conditioned existence). कष्ट (affliction/hardship endured for a purpose) carries less risk of conflating gospel-ministry suffering with the Buddhist doctrine that existence itself is suffering to be escaped.
do the work of an evangelist
ergon poiēson euangelistou
”do the work of a gospel-bringer”
fulfill the role/task of a gospel-proclaimer

kathara syneidēsei
”with a clean conscience”
inward moral self-awareness
pure conscience, clear conscience
Paul’s integrity in ministry, grounding his authority to charge Timothy.[NEW TERM] High. विवेक (bibek). Caution: विवेक is a major technical term in Hindu (especially Advaita Vedanta) philosophy denoting the discriminative faculty distinguishing the real Self (Atman/Brahman) from illusion (Maya) — a soteriological faculty in that system. Here it is simply moral self-awareness of right/wrong before a personal God, not a discriminative path to liberation. Retained as the established Nepali Bible term but flagged for translator awareness.
unfeigned/sincere faith
anypokritos pistis
”unhypocritical faith”
genuine, non-performative trust

pneuma deilias / pneuma dynameōs kai agapēs kai sōphronismou

timidity/fear vs. capability, love, disciplined self-mastery

grace given…before the ages
charis pro chronōn aiōniōn
”grace before eternal times”
God’s grace-purpose predating creation
grace given us before time began
Grounds the gospel and Timothy’s calling in eternal divine purpose, not human circumstance.Grace [REUSED FROM BASELINE TM]: अनुग्रह.
abolished death
katargēsantos ton thanaton
”having nullified/abolished death”
rendering death powerless, ending its reign
abolished death, destroyed death, nullified death
Christ’s decisive victory over death itself through the gospel appearing — a once-for-all act.[NEW TERM] High. Must be framed as a unique, historical, once-for-all defeat of death through the risen Christ — not release from a repeating death-rebirth cycle (which would collapse into the forbidden मुक्ति/मोक्ष/निर्वाण frame already guarded against for “salvation” and “resurrection”).
life and immortality
zōēn kai aphtharsian
”life and incorruption/immortality”
imperishable, undying resurrection life
life and immortality, life and incorruption
The positive counterpart to abolished death — brought to light through the gospel, not through ascetic or meditative attainment.ζωή [NEW TERM], Low: जीवन. ἀφθαρσία [NEW TERM], High: अमरता (amarata). Caution: अमरता/amrita carries strong Hindu associations with the nectar of immortality (amrita) sought via yogic/ritual practice, and with moksha as escape from mortality through liberation from rebirth. Here immortality is a gift disclosed through Christ’s gospel, received by faith, not attained through practice.
Savior
sōtēr
”savior, deliverer”
one who rescues/delivers
Savior, deliverer
[NEW TERM] CRITICAL. Agent-noun of σωτηρία (TM: उद्धार). Applied to both God and Christ Jesus in this letter.Critical. Nepali: उद्धारकर्ता (uddharkarta) — built directly on the established उद्धार root. Never मुक्तिदाता (which would carry the forbidden मुक्ति root).

”guard the good thing deposited/entrusted”
protect a valuable trust placed in one’s keeping

Must convey a treasure entrusted for safekeeping and future transmission, not a private possession or personally-revised teaching.
through the Holy Spirit
dia Pneumatos Hagiou
[see baseline]

The Spirit enables faithful guarding of the deposit — not human willpower alone.[REUSED FROM BASELINE TM] Critical.

entrust to faithful men
parathou pistois anthrōpois
”deposit with faithful men”
commit a trust to reliable people
entrust to faithful men
Cognate of παραθήκη (1:14) — the deposit doctrine extended into a multi-generational chain (Paul → Timothy → faithful men → others), the core mechanism of Faithful Transmission of the Gospel.[NEW TERM] High.
soldier, athlete, farmer
stratiōtēs, athlōn, geōrgos

suffer hardship (for the gospel)
kakopathō
[cf. 1:8, 4:5]

ho logos tou theou ou dedetai
”the word of God has not been bound/chained”
the message’s advance is unstoppable regardless of the messenger’s circumstance
the word of God is not chained, the word of God cannot be bound
Key assurance verse: gospel transmission continues even when preachers are imprisoned or suffering — critical link between Perseverance under Suffering and Faithful Transmission of the Gospel.word of God [NEW TERM], High: परमेश्वरको वचन (built on वचन, see 4:2 entry).
trustworthy saying: died/live with him, endure/reign, deny/denied, faithless/faithful

a creedal/hymnic formula on covenant loyalty and divine faithfulness
trustworthy saying; if we deny him he will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful
Anchors Assurance of Reward (God’s own faithfulness is not contingent on ours) while soberly warning against denial/apostasy.ἀρνέομαι [NEW TERM], High: इन्कार गर्नु. Both must retain the weight of covenant betrayal, not mere forgetfulness.
rightly handling the word of truth
orthotomounta ton logon tēs alētheias
”cutting straight the word of truth”
correctly, precisely interpreting/presenting the truth (image from cutting a straight furrow or path)
rightly dividing, rightly handling, correctly teaching
[NEW TERM] High. The methodological center of Guarding Sound Doctrine — precise, undistorted presentation of apostolic truth, contrasted with the false teachers’ distortions later in chs. Must not be softened into generic “good teaching”; the image of precision/straightness against distortion should be retained.
irreverent, empty chatter / spreads like gangrene
bēbēlous kenophōnias…hōs gangraina nomēn hexei
”unholy empty talk…will have pasture like gangrene”
worthless, corrosive speech that spreads doctrinal corruption
irreverent babble, empty chatter, spreads like gangrene
Vivid warning image of false teaching’s contagious, destructive spread — key to Apostasy and False Teachers.[NEW TERMS] Medium each. Figurative; low syncretism risk but doctrinally important imagery to preserve.
resurrection already past (false teaching of Hymenaeus and Philetus)
tēn anastasin ēdē gegonenai
”the resurrection has already happened”
a heretical over-spiritualized resurrection claim
saying that the resurrection has already happened
A direct corruption of the Critical resurrection doctrine (TM: पुनरुत्थान) — a concrete case study for Apostasy and False Teachers and Guarding Sound Doctrine.resurrection [REUSED FROM BASELINE TM]: पुनरुत्थान. Flag as Critical here specifically because it shows the term itself being misapplied by false teachers — reviewers must ensure the translation clearly marks this as an erroneous claim, not an endorsed teaching.
God’s firm foundation, seal, “the Lord knows those who are his”
ho themelios…egnō Kyrios tous ontas autou
”the foundation…the Lord knew those being his”
God’s unshakeable, discerning knowledge of true believers amid apostasy
God’s foundation stands firm; the Lord knows who are his

apostēnai apo adikias

separate oneself from wrongdoing
depart from iniquity, turn away from wickedness
Practical response to false teaching: moral separation.ἀδικία [NEW TERM], High: अधार्मिकता (adharmikata) — a negated form of the already-established TM धार्मिकता, avoiding the forbidden धर्म noun while remaining doctrinally consistent.

skeuē eis timēn…eis atimian…ekkatharē heauton
”vessels for honor…for dishonor…cleanse himself”
household-vessel metaphor for varied roles/character within the church
vessels of honor and dishonor; cleanse himself
Metaphor for separating from corrupt teaching/teachers to remain a useful instrument.σκεῦος [NEW TERM], Low-Medium: भाँडा. ἐκκαθαίρω [NEW TERM], Medium: आफूलाई शुद्ध पार्नु — caution: शुद्ध elsewhere is reserved against for “holy” (ritual-purity risk); here it describes a moral/behavioral self-separation from corrupting association, a different sense, but reviewers should ensure it does not read as ritual cleansing.
flee youthful passions; pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace
pheuge…diōke de dikaiosynēn, pistin, agapēn, eirēnēn
”flee…but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace”
avoid destructive desire; actively chase after virtue
flee youthful lusts; pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace

”foolish disputes…gentleness…repentance unto knowledge of truth…the devil’s snare”
avoiding pointless argument; gentle correction aimed at restoring the erring to truth
foolish arguments; gentleness; repentance; the devil’s trap
Sets a pastoral, restorative tone for confronting false teaching — correction aims at rescue, not merely victory in debate.μωραὶ ζητήσεις [NEW TERM], Low: मूर्ख विवाद. πραΰτης [NEW TERM], Low: नम्रता. μετάνοια [NEW TERM], Medium-High: पश्चाताप (pashchatap) — must NOT be rendered प्रायश्चित्त, a term carrying Hindu ritual-penance/karma-atonement connotations (expiatory acts to offset accumulated karma); biblical repentance is a Spirit-enabled turning toward God, not ritual compensation. διάβολος [NEW TERM], Medium: शैतान (established across Nepali Christian usage).

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering Risk
in the last days
en eschatais hēmerais
”in the last/final days”
the eschatological period preceding Christ’s return
in the last days, in the latter days
[NEW TERM] CRITICAL. The temporal frame for the entire Apostasy and False Teachers doctrine — a linear, terminal countdown toward Christ’s return and judgment (cf. 4:1, 4:8).Critical/High. Nepali: अन्तिम दिनहरू (antim dinharu). Must be clearly distinguished from (a) the Hindu Kali Yuga concept of a degenerate current cosmic age within an endlessly repeating four-yuga cycle, and (b) the Buddhist doctrine of the gradual decline of the Dharma teaching over time before its eventual renewal (associated with the future Buddha Maitreya). Biblical “last days” moves toward one final, unrepeated consummation, not toward the next turn of a cosmic wheel.
difficult/dangerous times
chalepoi kairoi
”harsh/dangerous seasons”
perilous, morally hostile periods
difficult times, dangerous times, perilous times
Sets the tone for the vice catalogue that follows.[NEW TERM] Low.
vice catalogue (lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, etc.)
philautoi, philargyroi, alazones, hyperēphanoi, etc.
(see individual glosses)
a lengthy descriptive list of moral corruption characterizing the last days
lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, etc.
Diagnostic list — apostasy manifests morally, not merely doctrinally; the contrast between “lovers of pleasure” (φιλήδονοι) and “lovers of God” (φιλόθεοι) is the list’s climactic point.[NEW TERMS, general vocabulary, Low individually]. Standard descriptive Nepali equivalents (आत्म-प्रेमी, धनको लोभी, घमन्डी, etc.) suffice; no major syncretism risk in the individual words. The doctrinally load-bearing contrast (लोभ/स्वार्थ vs. परमेश्वर-प्रेम) should be preserved in translation flow.
having a form of godliness but denying its power
morphōsin eusebeias echontes, tēn de dynamin autēs ērnēmenoi
”having a form/outline of godliness, but having denied its power”
outward religious appearance without inward transforming reality
having the appearance of godliness but denying its power
[NEW TERM] CRITICAL clause. The diagnostic verse for Apostasy: religiosity without transforming reality. εὐσέβεια (“godliness”) is a major term requiring careful handling.εὐσέβεια, High/Critical: Nepali ईश्वरभक्ति (Ishwarbhakti). Caution parallel to baseline’s rejection of भक्ति for “faith”: भक्ति is the term for Hindu bhakti-mārga devotional worship (one of the classic Hindu paths to liberation). ईश्वरभक्ति must be taught/glossed as reverent, obedient devotion to the one true God through Christ, never assimilated to bhakti-yoga as a path to liberation through devotional practice. δύναμις [REUSED FROM BASELINE TM]: सामर्थ्य.
deceivers/impostors, deceiving and being deceived
goētes…planōntes kai planōmenoi
”sorcerer-like impostors…deceiving and being deceived”
charlatans who mislead others while themselves misled
impostors, deceivers, deceiving and being deceived
[NEW TERM] Names the false teachers directly — the human agents of the Apostasy doctrine, feeding into ch. 4’s warning about itching ears.γόης, Medium: ठग. πλανάω, High: बहकाउनु/भड्काउनु — must retain the doctrinal weight of leading astray from apostolic truth, not merely “confusing.”
Jannes and Jambres
Iannēs kai Iambrēs
(proper names)
traditional (extra-biblical Jewish) names for Pharaoh’s magicians who opposed Moses (cf. Exodus 7)
Jannes and Jambres
Historical type for present-day opponents of the truth — a rhetorical parallel, not a doctrinal term.Low. Proper names; transliterate per established Nepali OT convention: यान्नेस र याम्ब्रेस, with a brief historical footnote for readers unfamiliar with the extra-biblical background.
disqualified/rejected concerning the faith
adokimoi peri tēn pistin
”unapproved/failing the test regarding the faith”
having failed a test of genuineness with respect to Christian faith
disqualified regarding the faith, rejected as to the faith
[NEW TERM] The ultimate outcome-verdict on false teachers — a strong, final-sounding judgment.High.
all who desire to live godly…will be persecuted
pantes hoi thelontes eusebōs zēn en Christō Iēsou diōchthēsontai
”all wishing to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted”

all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution
Universal principle linking godliness (εὐσέβεια, see above) directly to persecution — foundational for Perseverance under Suffering.δίωγμος/διώκω [NEW TERM], High: सतावट/सताउनु. Must denote suffering specifically for righteousness’/gospel’s sake, not generic misfortune, and must not be reframed as karmic retribution for past wrongdoing.
will progress from bad to worse
prokopsousin epi to cheiron
”will advance toward the worse”
continual moral/doctrinal decline
will go from bad to worse, will progress in evil
Confirms the linear, worsening trajectory of the “last days” (contra any cyclical renewal expectation).Low-Medium.

Chapter 4 (2 Timothy 4:6-22) — verses 4:1-5 covered in Part A above

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering Risk
I am being poured out as a libation
egō…spendomai
”I am being poured out (as a drink-offering)“
sacrificial libation imagery applied to one’s life/death
I am being poured out like a drink offering, my life is being poured out
[NEW TERM] High. Paul frames his approaching death as a final act of self-giving sacrifice for the gospel — climactic image for Perseverance under Suffering and Assurance of Reward.Nepali: बलिस्वरूप खनिनु (metaphorical). Caution: Nepal’s living Hindu (yajña libation, puja offerings) and Vajrayana Buddhist (tantric ritual offering) traditions give literal libation/offering rituals ongoing cultural currency; the translation must clearly read as Paul’s personal metaphor for self-sacrificial gospel service, not an actual ritual offering to a deity.
the time of my departure
ho kairos tēs analyseōs mou
”the season of my release/departure”
a euphemism for death, “loosing/departure” (image of a ship untying from harbor, or a soldier breaking camp)
the time of my departure, the time for me to go
Death anticipated calmly as departure to be with Christ, not annihilation or dissolution.[NEW TERM] Medium. Caution: must not read as an impersonal “release” of the soul (moksha-like liberation from bodily existence); the context (4:8, 4:18) frames this as going to receive a reward from a personal Lord and Judge.
I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith
ton kalon agōna ēgōnismai, ton dromon teteleka, tēn pistin tetērēka
”I have contended the good contest, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith”
athletic imagery of a completed race/contest applied to a finished life of ministry
fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith
[NEW TERM CLUSTER] High. The summary self-testimony anchoring Assurance of Reward: a completed, faithful stewardship of the gospel deposit (cf. παραθήκη, 1:14).ἀγών, Low-Medium: लडाइँ/प्रतिस्पर्धा. δρόμος, Low: दौड. πίστις τετήρηκα (“kept the faith”) reuses TM विश्वास — विश्वास जोगाएको/पालन गरेको — High, since “kept” implies guarding the deposit of faith intact, echoing 1:14’s guard-the-deposit theme.
the crown of righteousness
ho tēs dikaiosynēs stephanos
”the righteousness-crown”
a victor’s wreath (not a royal diadem) awarded for faithful completion
crown of righteousness
[NEW TERM] CRITICAL. The central image of Assurance of Reward — an eschatological reward-wreath from Christ the righteous Judge, on the Day, for all who love his appearing.Nepali: धार्मिकताको मुकुट (dharmikatako mukut, using TM धार्मिकता). Critical caution: मुकुट in Nepali overwhelmingly evokes the royal crown of the Shah-dynasty monarchy (abolished 2008), whose kings, per the baseline package, were venerated as living avatars of Vishnu. This “crown” must be clearly taught, in surrounding context, as Christ’s own heavenly victor’s-wreath reward for faithfulness — not a symbol of earthly political kingship or divine-avatar royal legitimacy. Consider a brief explanatory note distinguishing the athletic-victor sense (στέφανος) from a royal diadem (διάδημα).
the righteous Judge
ho dikaios kritēs
”the righteous judge”

the righteous Judge
Christ as the one who impartially bestows the reward — reuses the established धर्मी adjective already present in baseline’s justification term.κριτής [NEW TERM], Medium: न्यायकर्ता.
all who have loved his appearing
pasi tois ēgapēkosi tēn epiphaneian autou
”to all who have loved his appearing”

to all who have longed for/loved his coming
Reuses ἐπιφάνεια established at 4:1 — the reward is specifically for those who eagerly anticipate Christ’s (singular, final) return.ἐπιφάνεια — see full entry at 4:1 above: प्रकटन, High.
the Lord will rescue me…into his heavenly kingdom
rhysetai me ho Kyrios…eis tēn basileian autou tēn epouranion
”the Lord will deliver me…into his heavenly kingdom”

the Lord will rescue me…into his heavenly kingdom
Final assurance statement — a personal Lord’s rescue into an eternal, personal kingdom presence, not an impersonal cosmic outcome.ῥύομαι [NEW TERM], High: बचाउनुहुनेछ (built on उद्धार family). ἐπουράνιος [NEW TERM], High: स्वर्गीय — caution: स्वर्ग (heaven/swarga) in Hindu and Buddhist cosmology denotes a temporary, meritorious heavenly realm one eventually leaves once accumulated merit is exhausted, followed by further rebirth. The “heavenly kingdom” here must be understood as the believer’s final, eternal, personal dwelling with Christ, not a temporary way-station within an ongoing cycle. Lord/kingdom [REUSED FROM BASELINE TM]: प्रभु, राज्य.
to whom be glory forever and ever
hō hē doxa eis tous aiōnas tōn aiōnōn
”to whom (be) the glory unto the ages of the ages”

to him be glory forever and ever
Closing doxology.glory [REUSED FROM BASELINE TM]: महिमा (Critical/High — never तेज).
Demas deserted me
Dēmas…me egkatelipen
”Demas…forsook/abandoned me”

Demas deserted me
A sobering counter-example of failed perseverance, contrasted with Paul’s own faithful finish.ἐγκαταλείπω [NEW TERM], Low-Medium: त्यागे/छोडे.
the Lord will repay him according to his deeds
apodōsei autō ho Kyrios kata ta erga autou
”the Lord will give back to him according to his works”

the Lord will repay him according to his deeds
Assurance-of-reward logic applied negatively: divine accounting is certain in both directions.ἀποδίδωμι κατὰ τὰ ἔργα [NEW TERM], Medium: कामअनुसार फर्काउनुहुनेछ.
the Lord stood by me and strengthened me
ho Kyrios moi parestē kai enedynamōsen me
”the Lord stood beside me and empowered me”

the Lord stood by me and strengthened me
Present, personal divine support in the midst of trial — grounding Perseverance under Suffering in relational presence, not stoic self-reliance.Low-Medium. उभिनुभयो/शक्ति दिनुभयो — note prefer सामर्थ्य दिनुभयो over शक्ति दिनुभयो given the standing power_of_god caution (शक्ति forbidden in soteriological/empowerment contexts).
