Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — Gospel of John
Full-Book Doctrine Matrix | English → Nepali | John 1–21
Purpose and Method
This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4: a complete doctrine matrix spanning every chapter of the Gospel of John, first to last, built to be fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json (same 33 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing) and with the terminology fixed in 08_core_glossary.md. The core passage, John 3:1–21 (Nicodemus), is the theological anchor of the curriculum and carries the single highest concentration of Critical-tier doctrine in the book — but it is not the boundary of this analysis. Every chapter is represented below, either as the primary locus of a doctrine’s introduction or as a continuation/development point. No chapter is silently omitted.
Risk tiers, definitions, and review routing follow the baseline Romans convention exactly, as inherited by the John registry:
| Tier | Definition | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine | Human theologian, every occurrence |
| High | Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk | Human theologian |
| Medium | Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning | Native speaker review |
| Low | Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding | Automated review |

Notes on Full-Book Coverage
Every chapter of John (1–21) is represented above with at least one doctrine entry drawn directly from doctrine_risk_registry.json. No chapter is a doctrinally inert “filler” chapter in this Gospel — even narrative/sign chapters (2, 9, 11) carry Critical- or High-tier freight through their connection to resurrection, deity, and judgment themes. Where a chapter’s content is substantially a continuation of a doctrine already fully specified earlier (e.g., baptism symbolism recurring in chapter 3; the Holy Spirit’s ministry recurring across chapters 14–16, 20), this is marked explicitly as “Continuity” in the Translation Risk column rather than omitted, per the full-book-coverage mandate.
See doctrine_risk_registry.json for the authoritative risk tier, doctrine name, and review-routing values referenced throughout this matrix. See 08_core_glossary.md for the full terminology inventory underlying each Translation Risk note. See 04_comparative_theology.md for cross-tradition interpretive detail behind each Nepali-specific risk flagged above.
Critical Risk Doctrines
The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टको ईश्वरत्व र अस्तित्व-पूर्वता (वचन)
Key terms: word_logos, god, son_of_god, my_lord_and_my_god
Review routing: Human theologian
वचन (Logos) must never be rendered वाणी or वाक्, both bearing direct association with Vāc/Sarasvatī, the Hindu goddess of speech and cosmic sound; such a rendering would reduce the eternal, personal, co-equal Word to a deified attribute or emanation rather than God himself (1:1c, ‘the Word was God’).
Incarnation
Nepali name: देहधारण
Key terms: incarnation, word_logos, flesh
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: never अवतार. John 1:14 (‘the Word became flesh’) is the single most important incarnation verse in the New Testament and therefore the highest-stakes verse in the Johannine corpus for Nepal’s specific royal-avatar political history (Shah-dynasty kings venerated as living avatars of Vishnu until the monarchy’s 2008 abolition). देहधारण must convey a unique, once-for-all divine self-disclosure, never a repeatable royal or divine descent.
Sonship of Christ
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टको पुत्रत्व
Key terms: son_of_god, only_begotten_son, father
Review routing: Human theologian
एकमात्र पुत्र (only-begotten) must never be softened to suggest Christ is one of several divine sons or one avatar among many — a live risk given Hindu tradition’s recognition of multiple genuine avatars of Vishnu (Rama, Krishna, etc.) and Nepal’s own recent royal-avatar state ideology.
Unity of the Father and the Son
Nepali name: पिता र पुत्रको एकता
Key terms: father_and_son_one, father, son_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Nepal’s dominant Hindu philosophical tradition includes Advaita Vedanta, which teaches that ultimate reality is a single undifferentiated Absolute (Brahman) and that perceived plurality of selves is illusion (māyā). A careless rendering of ‘I and the Father are one’ (10:30) risks being heard as teaching this same monistic collapse. The unity in view is relational and volitional (unity of essence/purpose/love), with Father and Son remaining distinct Persons throughout — this must be made explicit at every occurrence.
The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Nepali name: नयाँ जन्म र आत्माद्वारा पुनर्निर्माण
Key terms: new_birth, holy_spirit, kingdom_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, ABSOLUTE FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION: पुनर्जन्म must never be used, as it denotes karma-driven reincarnation held by both Nepali Hindu and Buddhist frameworks (rebirth across lifetimes or across six realms). नयाँ जन्म (माथिबाटको जन्म) must instead convey a sovereign, once-for-all divine act originating from above, not a repeatable natural process nor a stage within an ongoing rebirth cycle. This extends the baseline’s identical forbidden-substitution rule already established for ‘resurrection.‘
Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टमा विश्वासद्वारा अनन्त जीवन
Key terms: eternal_life, faith_believe
Review routing: Human theologian
DUAL-FRONT rule identical in structure to the baseline’s ‘salvation’ entry: अनन्त जीवन must never be conflated with मोक्ष/मुक्ति (Hindu liberation from the rebirth cycle) or निर्वाण (Buddhist cessation of craving/self, held by Nepal’s Newar and Himalayan Buddhist communities). John 17:3 defines eternal life explicitly as personal, relational knowledge of the Father and Son received now by faith, not an eventual escape achieved through discipline, merit, or enlightenment across time.
The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Nepali name: सात ‘म हुँ’ भनाइहरू
Key terms: i_am_absolute, i_am_bread_of_life, i_am_light_of_world, i_am_door, i_am_good_shepherd, i_am_resurrection_and_life, i_am_way_truth_life, i_am_true_vine
Review routing: Human theologian
Each predicated ‘I am’ statement echoes the absolute ἐγώ εἰμι’s deliberate allusion to God’s self-naming at Exodus 3:14 LXX. म हुँ is grammatically ordinary in Nepali and does not by itself signal this divine self-identification; every occurrence requires a teaching note, and several statements individually collide with specific Nepali religious frameworks (e.g., ‘the door’/‘the way’ claims exclusivity in a religiously plural society; ‘bread of life’ must avoid प्रसाद-style consumable-blessing associations; ‘resurrection and the life’ must avoid पुनर्जन्म).
The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Nepali name: सहायकको रूपमा पवित्र आत्मा
Key terms: paraclete_counselor, holy_spirit, spirit_of_truth, convict
Review routing: Human theologian
The Paraclete (सहायक) must be taught as a distinct, personal, fully divine Person — the same पवित्र आत्मा already Critical in the baseline — not assimilated to the broad Nepali category of intercessory or guardian spirits/deities invoked for aid or protection, nor reduced to an impersonal helping-force. No single existing Nepali term captures the full legal-advocate-plus-comforter-plus-teacher range, so सहायक requires supplementary teaching notes per context.
Christ’s Substitutionary Death
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टको प्रतिस्थापन-मृत्यु
Key terms: lamb_of_god, crucify, it_is_finished, son_of_man
Review routing: Human theologian
परमेश्वरका थुमा must be distinguished from Nepal’s ongoing tradition of animal sacrifice to Hindu deities (pashu-bali), most visibly the Gadhimai festival and Dashain sacrificial offerings, as a once-for-all, sufficient substitutionary sacrifice, not a repeatable ritual offering. पूरा भयो (‘it is finished,’ 19:30) must never be rendered as mere personal-duty discharge (दायित्व पूरा भयो), which would reframe the cross as Christ fulfilling a religious obligation rather than accomplishing a unique, all-sufficient, substitutionary redemptive work.
Resurrection of Christ
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टको पुनरुत्थान
Key terms: resurrection, i_am_resurrection_and_life
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: पुनरुत्थान must never be रुनर्जन्म. This risk is compounded in John relative to Romans by the additional tulku recognized-reincarnation tradition of Himalayan Buddhism, a third collision risk alongside standard Hindu rebirth and Buddhist six-realm rebirth — all three must be excluded by consistent use of पुनरुत्थान for Christ’s bodily, historical, once-for-all rising.
Deity of Christ
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टको ईश्वरत्व
Key terms: i_am_absolute, my_lord_and_my_god, god, word_logos
Review routing: Human theologian
John 20:28’s ‘my Lord and my God,’ applied directly and by name to the risen Jesus, is among the most direct and unqualified deity confessions in the New Testament and must combine both Critical baseline terms (प्रभु, परमेश्वर) with no softening. Given Nepal’s living memory of royal avatar-theology and its ongoing multi-deity religious landscape, every deity-of-Christ assertion requires mandatory theologian review.
Faith and Belief in Christ
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टमा विश्वास
Key terms: faith_believe
Review routing: Human theologian
John’s distinctive πιστεύω εἰς (‘believe INTO him’) construction, used far more pervasively across this Gospel’s 21 chapters than in Romans, denotes personal entrustment and union with Christ specifically, not generalized religious devotion or reverence (श्रद्धा, भक्ति) — categories carrying distinct Hindu/Buddhist devotional connotations. Given the term’s centrality to the Gospel’s stated purpose (20:31), this doctrine is elevated to Critical beyond the baseline’s High.
Salvation
Nepali name: उद्धार
Key terms: salvation, world_kosmos
Review routing: Human theologian
Identical dual-front rule as the baseline: never मुक्ति/मोक्ष (Hindu liberation from the rebirth cycle) and never निर्वाण (Buddhist cessation of craving/self). John additionally ties salvation to Christ’s mission to संसार (3:17) — the world as the personally addressed object of rescue, not an impersonal cycle.
Unity of Believers Patterned on the Father-Son Unity
Nepali name: पिता-पुत्रको एकतामा आधारित विश्वासीहरूको एकता
Key terms: that_they_may_be_one, father_and_son_one
Review routing: Human theologian
This is the single highest Nepali-specific risk doctrine in the entire Johannine corpus: Advaita Vedanta’s teaching that ultimate reality is one undifferentiated Absolute and that perceived plurality of selves is illusion (māyā) to be dissolved provides Nepali readers a culturally dominant lens through which ‘that they may be one’ could be misheard as teaching the same metaphysical absorption. The prayer instead preserves every believer’s distinct personhood (‘they,’ distinct from ‘you’ and ‘I’) while calling for relational and volitional unity of love and purpose.
High Risk Doctrines
Son of Man Title
Nepali name: मानिसका पुत्रको पदवी
Key terms: son_of_man
Review routing: Human theologian
मानिसका पुत्र must never be interchanged with परमेश्वरका पुत्र (Son of God) nor flattened to mean merely ‘a human being,’ which would lose the Daniel 7 exalted-authority sense; conflating the two titles would blur the careful two-natures Christology this Gospel establishes.
God’s Love for the World
Nepali name: संसारको निम्ति परमेश्वरको प्रेम
Key terms: world_kosmos, glory
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s initiating, sacrificial, downward-directed love (agapē) toward sinful संसार runs in the opposite direction from the Hindu bhakti-devotional pattern familiar to a Nepali audience, in which a creature’s ardent love is directed upward toward a deity. Additionally, संसार independently denotes, in Hindu and Buddhist frameworks, the cyclical phenomenal existence the devout seek liberation from; here it must clearly read as the personally-addressed object of God’s redemptive love, not a metaphysical cycle to escape.
Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Nepali name: न्याय र विश्वास/अविश्वास
Key terms: condemn_judgment, light, darkness, wrath_of_god, perish
Review routing: Human theologian
Judgment in John is a personal, relational verdict from a personal God in response to willed belief or unbelief in Christ, not an impersonal, automatic karmic balancing process (कर्मको नियम, already rejected in the baseline’s providence entry) nor a matter of accumulated moral merit across lifetimes. न्याय/दोषी ठहराउनु must retain this personal-forensic character throughout.
Universal Human Sinfulness and Accountability
Nepali name: मानवीय पापको विश्वव्यापीता
Key terms: sin, condemn_judgment, light, darkness
Review routing: Human theologian
Sin (पाप) throughout John is moral transgression before a personal God exposed by his personal presence as light — not ritual impurity nor impersonal bad karma (अकुशल कर्म, forbidden per baseline). 9:41’s culpable spiritual blindness must be preserved as willed guilt, not unfortunate ignorance, which would soften the doctrine toward a karma-determined-condition reading.
Light and Darkness as Revelation and Judgment
Nepali name: प्रकाश र अन्धकार: प्रकाशन र न्याय
Key terms: light, darkness
Review routing: Human theologian
ज्योति must be carefully distinguished from generic ‘enlightenment’ language associated with Buddhist bodhi (awakening as light-imagery) and the Hindu concept of the ātman as an inner divine spark of light; Johannine light is a specific, historical, personal self-disclosure of Christ entering the world from outside it, not a potential inner light discovered through contemplative practice.
Truth as Christ’s Personal Identity
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टको व्यक्तिगत परिचयको रूपमा सत्य
Key terms: truth, i_am_way_truth_life, spirit_of_truth
Review routing: Human theologian
सत्य carries independent philosophical weight in Nepali religious culture as an impersonal cosmic or ethical absolute (cf. सत्युग, the Hindu ‘Age of Truth’ in yuga cosmology; सत्याग्रह in the Gandhian moral-political tradition). Johannine truth is ultimately personal and Christ-centered (14:6), not an abstract principle discovered through ascetic or contemplative practice; this distinction must be explicit by chapter 14.
The Wrath of God against Unbelief
Nepali name: अविश्वासको विरुद्ध परमेश्वरको क्रोध
Key terms: wrath_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
परमेश्वरको क्रोध must be taught as the personal, moral, relational response of a personal God to willful unbelief, not an impersonal law of automatic karmic retribution (कर्मको नियम, already rejected in the baseline’s providence entry) nor भाग्य (fate).
Worship in Spirit and Truth
Nepali name: आत्मा र सत्यतामा आराधना
Key terms: worship_in_spirit_and_truth, holy_spirit, truth
Review routing: Human theologian
Must be taught as worship enabled by the Spirit and grounded in Christ-revealed truth, not ‘spirit’ as an inward subjective feeling-state or ‘truth’ as a philosophical abstraction achievable through meditation — both readings that would resonate uncritically with existing Nepali religious frameworks.
Spiritual Conflict with the Devil
Nepali name: दियाबलसँगको आत्मिक द्वन्द्व
Key terms: devil
Review routing: Human theologian
दियाबल must be taught as a specific, personal, cosmic adversary opposed to God and truth, not conflated with the broad, largely impersonal category of malevolent local spirits in Nepali folk religious belief (bhut, pret, masan), which occupy a different, localized, often placatable conceptual space.
Sanctification through the Word and the Spirit
Nepali name: वचन र आत्माद्वारा पवित्रीकरण
Key terms: holy_spirit, truth, word_logos
Review routing: Human theologian
REUSED FROM BASELINE (पवित्रीकरण): the Spirit’s ongoing work of making believers holy through Christ’s truth-word must not be read as Hindu ritual purification or Buddhist meditative self-purification through disciplined practice.
Unity of Jews and Gentiles / One Flock, One Shepherd
Nepali name: यहूदी र अन्यजातिहरूको एकता — एउटै भेडाको गोठ
Key terms: one_flock_one_shepherd, children_of_abraham
Review routing: Human theologian
REUSED FROM BASELINE DOCTRINE: spiritual identity under Christ’s shepherding is not conferred by ethnic lineage or physical descent, directly challenging caste-based spiritual hierarchy formerly codified in Nepal’s own state legal code, the Muluki Ain, in force until 1963.
Effectual Calling and Divine Initiative in Salvation
Nepali name: उद्धारमा परमेश्वरको प्रभावकारी बोलावट र अग्रसरता
Key terms: draw, new_birth
Review routing: Human theologian
REUSED FROM BASELINE DOCTRINE (प्रभावकारी बोलावट): salvation’s initiative lies with the Father who draws (तान्नु) and the Spirit who gives new birth, not with human seeking or merit — standing against both Hindu and Buddhist frameworks of self-directed spiritual advancement through disciplined practice.
Christ’s Glorification through Suffering
Nepali name: कष्टद्वारा ख्रीष्टको महिमा
Key terms: glory, lifted_up, hour
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s glorification is accomplished precisely through his suffering and death — a striking inversion of any triumphalist framework of divine glory, including the royal avatar-glory ideology historically attached to the Nepali monarchy per the baseline’s incarnation entry; glory manifest through voluntary humiliation, not worldly conquest or splendor.
Abiding in Christ
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टमा रहनु
Key terms: abide, i_am_true_vine
Review routing: Human theologian
रहनु must be clearly distinguished from Hindu Advaita/Buddhist non-attachment frameworks in which the spiritual goal is either merging into an undifferentiated absolute (losing distinct personal identity) or releasing attachment altogether; Johannine abiding preserves full personal, relational, distinct identity between Christ and the believer while producing deep, continuous, dependent intimacy.
Living Water and the Gift of the Spirit
Nepali name: जीवित पानी र आत्माको वरदान
Key terms: living_water, holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
जीवित पानी must not be tied to any geographic site of ritual sanctity (contrast with the Bagmati/Ganges holy-water pilgrimage-bathing tradition); Christ’s living water is Christ himself, given personally and internally through the Spirit, received by faith, not obtained by ritual bathing at a sacred location.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Baptism and New Covenant Symbolism
Nepali name: बप्तिस्मा र नयाँ करारको प्रतीक
Key terms: baptize, holy_spirit
Review routing: Native speaker review
बप्तिस्मा दिनु must be distinguished from ritual purificatory bathing (स्नान) practiced at sacred rivers such as the Bagmati at Pashupatinath; Christian baptism symbolizes union with Christ’s death/resurrection and reception of the Spirit, not repeatable ritual cleansing for merit.
Mission and Witness to the World
Nepali name: संसारको निम्ति साक्षी र मिसन
Key terms: testimony, world_kosmos
Review routing: Native speaker review
As with the baseline’s mission_to_nations entry, open evangelistic witness in Nepal carries concrete, current legal risk under the 2017 Muluki Criminal Code’s provisions restricting religious conversion; गवाही/testimony language should be framed as witness and proclamation, not recruitment.
The Kingdom of God/Christ Not of This World
Nepali name: यो संसारको नभएको परमेश्वरको राज्य
Key terms: kingdom_of_god, world_kosmos
Review routing: Native speaker review
REUSED FROM BASELINE: 18:36’s ‘my kingdom is not of this world’ is directly relevant to Nepal’s own recent history of a divinely-legitimated monarchy; Christ’s kingdom must be taught as explicitly not a political or territorial kingdom competing with earthly rule.
Inspiration and Testimony of Scripture
Nepali name: पवित्रशास्त्रको प्रेरणा र गवाही
Key terms: testimony, word_logos
Review routing: Native speaker review
REUSED FROM BASELINE CONCEPT: John’s own stated purpose (20:30-31) must be distinguished from the Hindu concept of shruti (heard by sages) and the Buddhist sutra tradition, both understood very differently from divine authorship testified to by human eyewitnesses.
