Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 2 Timothy (English ↔ Nepali)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, across all four chapters of 2 Timothy. Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked REUSED and restate the exact established rendering — they are not to be re-derived or altered. Terms new to the 2 Timothy curriculum are marked NEW and are proposed for addition to translation memory in Phase 2, pending theologian/native-speaker review per risk tier.
Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions: Critical (theologian review, every occurrence), High (theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review sufficient).

| 35 | Man of God | ἄνθρωπος τοῦ θεοῦ | anthrōpos tou theou | परमेश्वरका जन | Medium-High | 3:17 | Must not evoke the sadhu/lama “holy man” ideal; refers to any Scripture-equipped believer/minister. |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| 37 | Endure suffering / hardship | κακοπαθέω | kakopatheō | कष्ट सहनु | High | 2:3, 4:5 | Rejected: दुःख भोग्नु as the primary rendering — दुःख is also the Nepali term for Buddhist dukkha (the First Noble Truth, suffering inherent to all conditioned existence); कष्ट better isolates ministry/persecution-specific hardship from that doctrinal frame. |
| 38 | Persecution | διωγμός | diōgmos | सतावट | High | 3:11, 3:12 | Must denote suffering for righteousness’/gospel’s sake, not generic misfortune or karmic retribution. |

| 43 | Time of departure | ἀνάλυσις | analysis | प्रस्थानको समय / मेरो जाने बेला | Medium | 4:6 | Must not read as impersonal moksha-style “release” of the soul; frames death as personal departure to Christ. |

| 44 | Guard the good deposit | παραθήκη (φύλαξον) | parathēkē (phylaxon) | असल थाती जोगाउनु | High | 1:14 | Deposit as a treasure entrusted for safekeeping and transmission, not a private, revisable possession. |

| 56 | Preach (the word) | κηρύσσω | kēryssō | प्रचार गर्नु | High | 4:2 | Sensitive to Nepal’s 2017 Muluki Criminal Code proselytizing restrictions; keep register pastoral/discipleship-internal per the letter’s actual addressee (a fellow minister), not public-recruitment framing. |
| 57 | The word (gospel message) | λόγος | logos | वचन | High | 2:9, 4:2 | Denotes the specific authoritative gospel message, echoing the established वचन (Word) pattern already implicit in the baseline देहधारण entry. |
| 58 | In season, out of season | εὐκαίρως ἀκαίρως | eukairōs akairōs | बेलामौकामा र नबेलामा | Low-Medium | 4:2 | Idiom; render meaning, not literal words. |

Section 7 — New Terms: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
| # | English Term | Greek | Transliteration | Nepali Rendering | Risk | Reference | Notes / Alternatives Rejected |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 66 | Last days | ἔσχαται ἡμέραι | eschatai hēmerai | अन्तिम दिनहरू | Critical | 3:1 | Must be distinguished from the cyclical Hindu Kali Yuga (a degenerate age within a repeating four-yuga cycle) and the Buddhist doctrine of the Dharma’s gradual decline before renewal by a future Buddha (Maitreya). Biblical “last days” is linear and terminal. |
| 67 | Form of godliness (denying its power) | μόρφωσις εὐσεβείας | morphōsis eusebeias | ईश्वरभक्तिको बाहिरी रूप | Critical | 3:5 | The letter’s diagnostic verse for empty religiosity. |
| 68 | Godliness | εὐσέβεια | eusebeia | ईश्वरभक्ति | Critical/High | 3:5, 3:12 | Caution parallel to baseline’s rejection of भक्ति for “faith”: भक्ति is the term for Hindu bhakti-mārga devotional worship, one of the classical paths to liberation. ईश्वरभक्ति must always be taught as reverent obedience to the one true God through Christ, never assimilated to bhakti-yoga soteriology. |
| 69 | Deceivers / impostors | γόης | goēs | ठग | Medium | 3:13 | |
| 70 | Deceive / lead astray | πλανάω | planaō | बहकाउनु / भड्काउनु | High | 3:13 | Must retain the weight of leading astray from apostolic truth. |
| 71 | Disqualified/rejected concerning the faith | ἀδόκιμος (περὶ τὴν πίστιν) | adokimos | विश्वासको सम्बन्धमा अस्वीकृत | High | 3:8 | Built on TM विश्वास; strong, final-sounding verdict. |
| 72 | Myths | μῦθος | mythos | गप्प कथा | High | 4:4 | Must clearly signal invented, doctrinally false fabrication, without disparaging Nepal’s culturally prestigious Puranic or Jataka narrative traditions in a way that reads as a general insult rather than a specific doctrinal warning. |
| 73 | Itching ears | κνήθω τὴν ἀκοήν | knēthō tēn akoēn | कान चिलाउने | Medium | 4:3 | Idiom for craving novel, self-flattering teaching; may need brief explanatory gloss. |
| 74 | Turn away (from the truth) | ἀποστρέφω | apostrephō | तर्किनु / पन्छिनु | Medium | 4:4 | |
| 75 | Progress from bad to worse | προκόπτω ἐπὶ τὸ χεῖρον | prokoptō epi to cheiron | झन्झन् नराम्रो हुँदै जानु | Low-Medium | 3:13 | Confirms linear (non-cyclical) decline. |
| 76 | Truth | ἀλήθεια | alētheia | सत्यता | High | 2:15, 2:18, 2:25, 3:7-8, 4:4 | Fixed, objective apostolic truth opposed to myth/deception. |
Section 8 — New Terms: Assurance of Reward
| # | English Term | Greek | Transliteration | Nepali Rendering | Risk | Reference | Notes / Alternatives Rejected |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 77 | Crown of righteousness | στέφανος τῆς δικαιοσύνης | stephanos tēs dikaiosynēs | धार्मिकताको मुकुट | Critical | 4:8 | मुकुट strongly evokes the Shah-dynasty royal crown (abolished 2008; kings venerated as living Vishnu avatars per baseline). Must be taught as a heavenly victor’s-wreath reward, not a symbol of earthly/political/avatar-linked kingship. Built on TM धार्मिकता. |
| 78 | Righteous Judge | δίκαιος κριτής | dikaios kritēs | धर्मी न्यायकर्ता | Medium-High | 4:8 | धर्मी reuses the adjective already established in TM’s justification entry. |
| 79 | Loved his appearing | ἠγαπηκόσι τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν αὐτοῦ | ēgapēkosi tēn epiphaneian autou | उहाँको प्रकटनलाई प्रेम गरेका | High | 4:8 | See #80 for ἐπιφάνεια core entry. |
| 80 | Appearing | ἐπιφάνεια | epiphaneia | प्रकटन | High | 1:10, 4:1, 4:8 | Must read as Christ’s singular, final, personal appearing/return — not a cyclically repeatable divine descent akin to the historically state-sanctioned royal avatāra ideology in Nepal. |
| 81 | Will rescue / deliver | ῥύομαι | rhyomai | बचाउनुहुनेछ | High | 4:18 | Built on उद्धार family. |
| 82 | Heavenly kingdom | βασιλεία ἐπουράνιος | basileia epouranios | स्वर्गीय राज्य | High | 4:18 | Must be the believer’s final, eternal dwelling with a personal God — not a temporary merit-based heavenly realm (swarga) eventually exited for further rebirth, per Hindu/Buddhist cosmology. |
| 83 | Repay according to deeds | ἀποδίδωμι κατὰ τὰ ἔργα | apodidōmi kata ta erga | कामअनुसार फर्काउनुहुनेछ | Medium | 4:14 | Divine accounting, applied here as warning (negative counterpart of reward). |
| 84 | Deny | ἀρνέομαι | arneomai | इन्कार गर्नु | High | 2:12 | Covenant betrayal weight must be retained, not mere forgetfulness. |
| 85 | Faithless / unfaithful (of humans) | ἀπιστέω | apisteō | अविश्वासी हुनु | High | 2:13 | Contrasted with God’s own abiding faithfulness. |
Section 9 — Other New Terms of Note (Christian Character / Household Vocabulary)
| # | English Term | Greek | Transliteration | Nepali Rendering | Risk | Reference | Notes / Alternatives Rejected |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 86 | Mercy | ἔλεος | eleos | दया | Medium | 1:2 | Distinct from अनुग्रह (grace); compassion toward the afflicted, not primarily unmerited-favor-toward-the-guilty. |
| 87 | Conscience | συνείδησις | syneidēsis | विवेक | High | 1:3 | Established Bible term, but flagged: विवेक is a major Advaita Vedanta technical term for the discriminative faculty distinguishing the true Self from illusion — a soteriological faculty in that system. Here it denotes ordinary moral self-awareness before a personal God. |
| 88 | Gift of God (ordination gift) | χάρισμα θεοῦ | charisma theou | परमेश्वरको वरदान / आत्मिक वरदान | High | 1:6 | Never वरदान alone (per baseline rule against the Hindu deity-grants-a-boon narrative association). |
| 89 | Spirit of timidity / of power, love, self-control | πνεῦμα δειλίας / δυνάμεως, ἀγάπης, σωφρονισμοῦ | pneuma deilias / dynameōs, agapēs, sōphronismou | डरपोकपनको आत्मा / सामर्थ्य, प्रेम र सुबुद्धिको आत्मा | Low-Medium | 1:7 | δύναμις reuses TM सामर्थ्य (never शक्ति). |
| 90 | Testimony | μαρτύριον | martyrion | गवाही / साक्षी | Medium | 1:8 | |
| 91 | Abolished death | καταργέω τὸν θάνατον | katargeō ton thanaton | मृत्युलाई निष्क्रिय पार्नुभयो | High | 1:10 | Once-for-all historical defeat, not release from a repeating death-rebirth cycle. |
| 92 | Life and immortality | ζωὴ καὶ ἀφθαρσία | zōē kai aphtharsia | जीवन र अमरता | High | 1:10 | अमरता/amrita carries Hindu associations with the nectar of immortality and moksha; here it is a gift disclosed through the gospel, received by faith. |
| 93 | Savior | σωτήρ | sōtēr | उद्धारकर्ता | Critical | 1:9, [1:10 implied of Christ] | Built directly on TM उद्धार. Never मुक्तिदाता. |
| 94 | Elect / chosen ones | ἐκλεκτοί | eklektoi | चुनिएका जन | High | 2:10 | Adjectival extension of TM’s परमेश्वरको छनोट (election). |
| 95 | Repentance | μετάνοια | metanoia | पश्चाताप | Medium-High | 2:25 | Never प्रायश्चित्त (Hindu ritual-penance/karma-atonement term); this is Spirit-enabled turning toward God, not ritual compensation. |
| 96 | Snare of the devil | παγὶς τοῦ διαβόλου | pagis tou diabolou | शैतानको जाल | Medium | 2:26 | शैतान is the established Nepali Christian term. |
| 97 | Unrighteousness/iniquity | ἀδικία | adikia | अधार्मिकता | High | 2:19 | Negated derivative of TM धार्मिकता; avoids the forbidden धर्म noun while remaining terminologically consistent. |
| 98 | Cleanse oneself | ἐκκαθαίρω (ἑαυτόν) | ekkathairō (heauton) | आफूलाई शुद्ध पार्नु | Medium | 2:21 | Moral/behavioral self-separation from corrupting association; distinct sense from the “holy” caution on शुद्ध, but must not read as ritual purification. |
| 99 | Gentleness | πραΰτης | prautēs | नम्रता | Low | 2:25 | |
| 100 | Foolish controversies | μωραὶ ζητήσεις | mōrai zētēseis | मूर्ख विवाद | Low | 2:23 |
Cross-Reference Note
Terms #25–100 above are proposed additions to translation_memory.json for the 2 Timothy curriculum layer. Per the Language Package’s version-increment rule, each new entry must be recorded with its assigned risk tier before Phase 2 segment translation begins, and Critical/High entries must be routed to human theologian review before first use, consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json routing conventions established in the Romans baseline.
Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: धार्मिकता
Transliteration: dharmikata
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: धर्म, पुण्य
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER धर्म. Underlies 2 Timothy 3:16’s ‘training in righteousness’ and 4:8’s ‘crown of righteousness.‘
Salvation
Approved rendering: उद्धार
Transliteration: uddhar
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ति, मोक्ष, निर्वाण
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER मुक्ति/मोक्ष/निर्वाण. Occurs at 2:10 and 3:15, where Scripture’s sufficiency leads to salvation only through faith in Christ Jesus, not through mere possession of sacred texts.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: पुनरुत्थान
Transliteration: punarutthan
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER पुनर्जन्म. 2:18 records Hymenaeus and Philetus falsely teaching ‘the resurrection has already happened’ — must be clearly marked as condemned error, not endorsed teaching.
Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभु
Transliteration: prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: मालिक, ईश्वर
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Used throughout 2 Timothy (1:2, 2:19, 2:22, 4:1, 4:8, 4:14, 4:17, 4:18, 4:22) with exclusive, supreme force.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा
Transliteration: Pavitra Atma
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्म, परमात्मा
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Guards and empowers the good deposit at 1:14.
God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर
Transliteration: Parameshwar
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: भगवान
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER भगवान, given Nepal’s constitutional history as a declared Hindu Kingdom until 2007.
Jesus
Approved rendering: येशू
Transliteration: Yeshu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Established Nepali Christian standard form used throughout.
Father
Approved rendering: पिता
Transliteration: Pita
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in the 1:2 greeting.
Christ
Approved rendering: ख्रीष्ट
Transliteration: Khrist
Doctrine: Lordship and Deity of Christ
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Established transliterated proper-name form per baseline transliteration standards, now formally keyed for this package. Distinct from मसीह (the title-sense used for the Messianic-promise doctrine); ख्रीष्ट functions as the fixed personal-name element of ‘Christ Jesus,’ used throughout 2 Timothy.
Scripture
Approved rendering: पवित्रशास्त्र
Transliteration: pavitrashastra
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: शास्त्र, धर्मशास्त्र
Original: γραφή (πᾶσα γραφή)
Category: Scripture
The doctrinal anchor noun for 3:16. NEVER शास्त्र alone (shared vocabulary with Hindu dharmashastra and Buddhist shastra literature) and NEVER धर्मशास्त्र (forbidden धर्म root).
God Breathed
Approved rendering: परमेश्वर-प्रेरित
Transliteration: Parameshwar-prerit
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: श्रुति-derived phrasing
Original: θεόπνευστος
Category: Scripture
The single most doctrinally load-bearing word of the core passage (3:16). Must be clearly distinguished from Hindu śruti (sacred utterance ‘heard’ by ancient sages through meditative attainment) and the Buddhist sutra tradition of orally transmitted, memorized teaching — neither frames divine authorship of a fixed text as θεόπνευστος does.
Last Days
Approved rendering: अन्तिम दिनहरू
Transliteration: antim dinaharu
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Rejected alternatives: कलियुग, प्रलय
Original: ἐν ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις
Category: Apostasy
Occurs at 3:1, the temporal frame for the entire Apostasy doctrine. Must be clearly distinguished from the Hindu Kali Yuga (a degenerate age within an endlessly repeating four-yuga cycle) and from the Buddhist doctrine of the Dharma’s gradual decline before Maitreya’s renewal; biblical ‘last days’ moves toward one final, unrepeated consummation.
Form Of Godliness
Approved rendering: ईश्वरभक्तिको बाहिरी रूप
Transliteration: Ishwarbhaktiko bahiri rup
Doctrine: Form of Godliness Without Its Power
Original: μόρφωσιν εὐσεβείας ἔχοντες, τὴν δὲ δύναμιν αὐτῆς ἠρνημένοι
Category: Apostasy
Occurs at 3:5, the diagnostic verse for Apostasy: religiosity without transforming सामर्थ्य (never शक्ति).
Godliness
Approved rendering: ईश्वरभक्ति
Transliteration: Ishwarbhakti
Doctrine: Godliness
Rejected alternatives: भक्ति
Original: εὐσέβεια
Category: Apostasy
Occurs at 3:5, 3:12. Parallel caution to the baseline’s rejection of भक्ति for ‘faith’: भक्ति names the Hindu bhakti-mārga devotional path, one of the classical routes to liberation. ईश्वरभक्ति must always denote reverent obedience to the one true God through Christ, never assimilated to bhakti-yoga soteriology.
Crown Of Righteousness
Approved rendering: धार्मिकताको मुकुट
Transliteration: dharmikatako mukut
Doctrine: The Crown of Righteousness
Original: ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης στέφανος
Category: Reward
Occurs at 4:8, the central image of Assurance of Reward. मुकुट overwhelmingly evokes the Shah-dynasty royal crown, whose kings were venerated as living avatars of Vishnu until the monarchy’s 2008 abolition. Must be taught, with standing homiletic gloss, as Christ’s own heavenly victor’s-wreath reward (στέφανος, not διάδημα), never a symbol of earthly/political/avatar-linked kingship.
Savior
Approved rendering: उद्धारकर्ता
Transliteration: uddharkarta
Doctrine: Savior and Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मुक्तिदाता
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Character
Occurs at 1:9-10, applied to both God and Christ Jesus. Agent-noun of σωτηρία (TM उद्धार); built directly on the established root. NEVER मुक्तिदाता (forbidden मुक्ति root).
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: सुसमाचार
Transliteration: susamachar
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: खुशखबरी
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Reused exactly. In 2 Timothy anchors Faithful Transmission of the Gospel and The Charge to Preach the Word (1:8, 1:10, 2:8, 4:5); must convey an authoritative announcement, not generic good news.
Grace
Approved rendering: अनुग्रह
Transliteration: anugraha
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: कृपा, पुण्य, भाग्य
