Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — Titus (Full Book, English → Nepali)
This document is the full doctrine matrix for Titus 1–3, fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (same 14 doctrines, same risk tiers, same routing). It extends coverage to every chapter of the book from first to last, per PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate. The core passage (Titus 2:11–3:8) is the theological anchor of the letter — the fullest concentration of Critical-risk doctrine — but every other section of Titus 1–3 is analyzed and, where a section carries no new doctrinal weight, is explicitly marked “reviewed — no new doctrine” rather than silently omitted.
Section A: Doctrine Matrix (Full Book)
| # | Doctrine | Supporting Passages (Titus) | Risk Level | Translation Risk (Nepali-specific) | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Grace That Trains for Godly Living | 1:1 (godliness); 2:1-10 (household virtue lists); 2:11-12; 3:8 | High | तालिम दिने (training) must be grace’s own active work, not ascetic self-discipline (tapasya-style effort). भक्तिभाव (godliness) collides with bhakti-marga devotionalism unless explicitly anchored to परमेश्वर. संयम (self-control) is a prominent Hindu/Buddhist ascetic virtue term risking a self-achieved-merit reading rather than Spirit-produced fruit. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Qualifications for Elders | 1:5-9 | High | अध्यक्ष (overseer) risks conflation with Hindu temple administrative offices (e.g., a mahant/chief-priest role at Pashupatinath); एल्डर is transliterated to avoid प्राचीन (mere seniority) or प्रधान (overstated “boss” authority) which would misstate a qualification-based, servant-leadership office. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Sound Doctrine and Good Works | 1:9, 1:13, 1:16; 2:1, 2:7, 2:10, 2:14; 3:1, 3:8, 3:14 | High | स्वस्थ शिक्षा deliberately avoids सिद्धान्त (implies one philosophical school among several, echoing Vedanta/Buddhist siddhanta traditions). असल काम must never be read as पुण्य-कर्म (merit-accumulating deeds building toward better rebirth/liberation); works are fruit, never cause, of salvation. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Salvation by Grace not Works | 2:11; 3:5-7 | Critical | 3:5’s explicit negation (“not because of works done by us in righteousness”) is the letter’s doctrinal core. अनुग्रह/दया must be sharply distinguished from karma-merit accounting shared by Nepali Hindu and Buddhist ethics (पुण्य-कर्म); दया itself must be distinguished from Buddhist करुणा (self-cultivated compassion) since biblical mercy is God’s own personal saving disposition. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Regeneration by the Holy Spirit | 3:5-6 | Critical | नयाँ जन्म must never be rendered पुनर्जन्म (karma-driven cyclical rebirth, both Hindu and Buddhist six-realm cosmology) — risk exceeds even the baseline’s resurrection caution since παλιγγενεσία is literally “again-birth.” धोवाइ must never be rendered स्नान (Hindu ritual bathing, e.g. sacred Bagmati/Pashupatinath bathing), which would reinstate exactly the works-based purification 3:5 denies. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Submission to Authority | 2:5, 2:9-10; 3:1 | Critical | Nepal’s 1854 Muluki Ain formally codified caste-based social submission as state law until 1963. Careless translation risks re-endorsing birth-ascribed hierarchical subordination rather than voluntary, gospel-transformed honor toward legitimate civic/household authority. Explicit clarification required at every occurrence, including the first-century household-slavery instruction (2:9-10). | Human theologian |
| 7 | Avoiding Divisive Controversies | 1:10-14; 3:9-11 | Medium | Lower direct collision risk than most doctrines in this book, but विभाजनकारी व्यक्ति must not be read through the later postbiblical technical sense of formal creedal “heresy,” and व्यवस्थाका बारेमा झगडा must stay anchored to Mosaic Law disputes (व्यवस्था) rather than drifting toward a धर्म-rooted framing. | Native speaker review |
| 8 | Deity of Christ | 2:13 | Critical | 2:13’s single grammatical unit (“our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ”) is one of the NT’s clearest direct assertions of Christ’s full deity. Nepali must preserve the single-referent grammar rather than splitting it into two persons, and must not soften महान् परमेश्वर र हाम्रा उद्धारकर्ता toward the avatar framework historically attached to Nepal’s Shah-dynasty monarchy (living memory until 2008). | Human theologian |
| 9 | The Appearing (Epiphany) of Grace and of Christ’s Glory | 2:11; 2:13; 3:4 | Critical | ἐπιφάνεια is the technical Hellenistic-royal term for a king’s/god’s visible grand arrival — the same register Nepali अवतार theology occupies via the Shah kings’ state-sanctioned Vishnu-avatar status. NEVER अवतार; must not suggest a repeatable divine descent. This is the unique historical disclosure of grace (2:11) and, at Christ’s return (2:13), the unveiling of glory already possessed by the one who took on flesh once (देहधारण). | Human theologian |
| 10 | Universal Scope of Grace | 2:11; 3:2 | High | ”Grace…to all people” and “showing courtesy to all people” must retain unqualified universality, directly relevant given Nepal’s own history of legally codified caste hierarchy (the Muluki Ain, in force until 1963), paralleling the baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel doctrine. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Christian Hope and Eternal Life | 1:2; 2:13; 3:7 | High | A certain, fixed hope anchored in Christ’s promised return and unending personal communion with a personal God — not the uncertain, gradual, possibly multi-life progress toward liberation shared by Hindu and Buddhist frameworks. अनन्त जीवन must never be conflated with मुक्ति/मोक्ष or निर्वाण. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Household and Family Order | 2:1-10 | Medium | Household role-instructions require culturally sensitive contemporary application without weakening the underlying Spirit-produced character qualities; risk is primarily one of application/consistency, intersecting with the submission_to_authority doctrine’s caste-hierarchy caution. | Native speaker review |
| 13 | False Teachers and Discernment | 1:10-16 | High | The Cretan-poet citation (1:12) must not use अगमवक्ता (baseline’s term for God’s inspired spokesperson), which would wrongly imply Paul affirms a pagan literary figure as a true prophet. “To the pure all things are pure” (1:15) risks being heard through Hindu/Buddhist ritual-purity categories (शुद्ध/अशुद्ध, echoing caste-purity codes historically tied to the Muluki Ain) rather than Paul’s point about conscience-level purity. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Mercy and Kindness of God | 3:4-5 | Medium | मानिसहरूप्रतिको प्रेम (philanthrōpia) risks flattening into secular NGO-style humanitarian benevolence divorced from the gospel — a live risk given how much visible Nepali Christian activity is expressed through development/disaster-relief work; must remain anchored to God’s specific saving action in Christ (3:5-7). | Native speaker review |

Section B: Full Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage
Titus 1:1-4 — Salutation
Doctrines active: Grace That Trains for Godly Living (godliness, 1:1); Christian Hope and Eternal Life (1:2, “before the ages,” “promised,” “eternal life”); background Election concept (baseline reuse, “God’s elect,” 1:1); Sound Doctrine (knowledge of the truth, 1:1); Salvation by Grace not Works (उद्धारकर्ता, Savior, applied to God the Father, 1:3-4). Terms: election (परमेश्वरको छनोट, baseline reuse), truth (सत्यता), Savior (उद्धारकर्ता, Critical), grace and peace (अनुग्रह र शान्ति, baseline reuse). No forbidden-substitution risk beyond standard Critical terms already governed.
Titus 1:5-9 — Qualifications for Elders
Doctrines active: Qualifications for Elders (Critical office-terminology decisions: एल्डर, अध्यक्ष); Sound Doctrine and Good Works (सुदृढ शिक्षा/sound doctrine, 1:9); Avoiding Divisive Controversies (background: elders must “hold firm” against error). All vice/virtue lists reviewed under 08_core_glossary Section C; low individual doctrinal-collision risk but High risk for the office concept as a whole because of the mahant/priestly-hierarchy collision risk.
Titus 1:10-16 — False Teachers, the Cretan Quotation, and Purity
Doctrines active: False Teachers and Discernment (Critical translation choices around 1:12’s “prophet” and 1:15’s purity language); Avoiding Divisive Controversies (Jewish myths, 1:14; the circumcision party, 1:10); Sound Doctrine and Good Works (1:16, profession vs. denial by works). This section carries the letter’s second-highest concentration of syncretism risk after 2:11-3:8, chiefly because of the purity-language collision with caste-purity codes.
Titus 2:1-10 — Household Codes and Sound Doctrine
Doctrines active: Household and Family Order (Medium); Grace That Trains for Godly Living (self-control cluster, virtue instructions for each household group); Submission to Authority (2:5, 2:9-10 — Critical, including the first-century household-slavery instruction); Sound Doctrine and Good Works (2:1, “sound doctrine,” and 2:7, 2:10 “adorn the doctrine”). This section requires the household-order translator note distinguishing gospel-transformed submission from caste-linked social hierarchy.
Titus 2:11-15 — Grace That Trains; The Appearing of Grace; Deity of Christ (Core Passage, Part 1)
Doctrines active: Grace That Trains for Godly Living (2:11-12, Critical translation of “trains us”); The Appearing (Epiphany) of Grace and of Christ’s Glory (2:11, 2:13 — Critical, highest-stakes अवतार-avoidance passage in the book); Deity of Christ (2:13, Critical Sharp’s-rule grammar preservation); Universal Scope of Grace (2:11, “to all people”); Christian Hope and Eternal Life (2:13, “blessed hope”); Salvation by Grace not Works (2:14, redeem/λυτρόω — Critical, never मुक्त/मुक्ति); Sound Doctrine and Good Works (2:14-15, “zealous for good works,” “declare…exhort…rebuke”). This is the single highest doctrinal-density paragraph in the letter and anchors the core passage’s opening half.
Titus 3:1-2 — Submission to Rulers and Universal Gentleness
Doctrines active: Submission to Authority (3:1, Critical); Universal Scope of Grace (3:2, “showing courtesy to all people”); Avoiding Divisive Controversies (3:2, “not quarrelsome” — low-risk adjacent vocabulary). Both Critical and High doctrines converge here; translator must sustain the same caste-hierarchy caution established at 2:5/2:9-10.
Titus 3:3-7 — Salvation by Grace not Works; Regeneration by the Spirit; Mercy and Kindness of God (Core Passage, Part 2)
Doctrines active: Salvation by Grace not Works (3:5-7, Critical — the letter’s doctrinal core statement); Regeneration by the Holy Spirit (3:5-6, Critical — highest single-verse syncretism risk in the entire book via παλιγγενεσία/नयाँ जन्म and λουτρόν/धोवाइ); Mercy and Kindness of God (3:4-5, Medium); Christian Hope and Eternal Life (3:7, “heir,” “hope of eternal life”); Deity of Christ / Trinitarian background (3:4-6, Father, Son, and Spirit all named in sequence — theologian should confirm no modalistic blending in the Nepali syntax). This is the theological peak of the core passage.
Titus 3:8 — Trustworthy Saying and Good Works
Doctrines active: Sound Doctrine and Good Works (Critical link-verse: grace-driven works are to be “insisted on” and are “profitable”); Salvation by Grace not Works (closing summary link back to 3:5-7). Closes the core passage.
Titus 3:9-11 — Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Doctrines active: Avoiding Divisive Controversies (Medium — the doctrine’s fullest concentration in the book, alongside 1:10-14). No Critical or High terms introduced here beyond those already governed.
Titus 3:12-15 — Personal Instructions and Greetings
Reviewed — no new doctrine. This closing section (travel plans for Artemas/Tychicus, Zenas and Apollos, greetings, “grace be with you all”) contains standard low-risk vocabulary (send/help on the way, fruit/unfruitful, greetings) already catalogued in Core Glossary Section I. The closing benediction (“Grace be with you all”) reuses baseline अनुग्रह with the Universal Scope of Grace doctrine’s “all”-language caution applying one final time, but introduces no new doctrinal or terminological risk requiring a fresh registry entry.

Critical Risk Doctrines
Salvation by Grace not Works
Nepali name: कामले नभई अनुग्रहद्वारा उद्धार
Key terms: grace, salvation, works, righteousness, mercy, justification, redeem
Review routing: Human theologian
Titus 3:5’s explicit negation (‘not because of works done by us in righteousness’) is the letter’s doctrinal core; अनुग्रह and दया must be sharply distinguished from the karma-merit accounting shared by Nepali Hindu and Buddhist ethical frameworks (पुण्य-कर्म), and दया itself must be distinguished from Buddhist करुणा, a self-cultivated compassion virtue rather than God’s own personal saving disposition.
Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Nepali name: पवित्र आत्माद्वारा नयाँ जन्म
Key terms: holy spirit, washing, regeneration, renewal
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, dual-front like the baseline’s Salvation doctrine: नयाँ जन्म must never be rendered पुनर्जन्म, the operative term for karma-driven cyclical rebirth in both Nepali Hindu and Buddhist frameworks (rebirth across six realms in Buddhist cosmology) — the risk here is even higher than for ‘resurrection’ since παλιγγενεσία is literally ‘again-birth.’ Likewise धोवाइ must never be rendered स्नान, which denotes ritual purificatory bathing central to Hindu practice (e.g. the sacred bath at Pashupatinath/Bagmati), which would reinstate exactly the works-based purification this verse denies.
Submission to Authority
Nepali name: अधिकारप्रति अधीनता
Key terms: submit / be subject, rulers and authorities, insubordinate, slaves submit to masters
Review routing: Human theologian
Nepal’s 1854 Muluki Ain formally codified caste-based social submission as state law until 1963; this doctrine, translated carelessly, could be heard as re-endorsing birth-ascribed hierarchical subordination rather than voluntary, gospel-transformed honor toward legitimate civic and household authority. Requires explicit clarification distinguishing gospel-grounded willing submission from caste-linked social hierarchy at every occurrence.
Deity of Christ
Nepali name: ख्रीष्टको ईश्वरत्व
Key terms: great God and Savior, Savior, glory, appearing
Review routing: Human theologian
Titus 2:13’s single grammatical unit (‘our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ’) is one of the New Testament’s clearest direct assertions of Christ’s full deity; Nepali translation must preserve this single-referent grammar rather than splitting it into two persons, and महान् परमेश्वर र हाम्रा उद्धारकर्ता must not be softened toward the avatar framework historically attached to Nepal’s Shah-dynasty monarchy (living memory until 2008).
The Appearing (Epiphany) of Grace and of Christ’s Glory
Nepali name: अनुग्रह र ख्रीष्टको महिमाको प्रकटीकरण
Key terms: appeared, appearing, epiphany, glory
Review routing: Human theologian
ἐπιφάνεια is the technical Hellenistic-royal term for a king’s or god’s grand visible arrival — precisely the register Nepali अवतार theology also occupies via the Shah kings’ state-sanctioned Vishnu-avatar status. Nepali renderings (प्रकट भयो / महिमामय प्रकटीकरण) must never use अवतार and must avoid phrasing suggesting a repeatable divine descent; this is the unique historical disclosure of grace (2:11) and, at Christ’s return (2:13), the unveiling of glory already possessed by the one who took on flesh once (देहधारण).
High Risk Doctrines
Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Nepali name: भक्तिमय जीवनको निम्ति तालिम दिने अनुग्रह
Key terms: grace, training, godliness, ungodliness, worldly passions, self-controlled
Review routing: Human theologian
Grace’s training function (तालिम दिने) must not be read as ascetic self-effort (tapasya-style discipline practiced in Hindu/Buddhist renunciate traditions); grace itself, not human merit-building discipline, is the active trainer. संयम (self-control) is also a prominent Hindu/Buddhist ascetic-virtue term risking a self-achieved-merit reading rather than Spirit-produced fruit.
Qualifications for Elders
Nepali name: एल्डरका योग्यताहरू
Key terms: elder, overseer, above reproach, husband of one wife, steward of God, sound doctrine
Review routing: Human theologian
अध्यक्ष (overseer) risks conflation with Nepal’s Hindu temple administrative hierarchy (e.g. a mahant/chief-priest role at shrines such as Pashupatinath); must be taught strictly as pastoral shepherding within मण्डली, never a priestly or ritual-administrative office. एल्डर is transliterated specifically to avoid प्राचीन (mere age-based seniority) or प्रधान (an overstated ‘boss’-style authority) that would misrepresent the qualification-based, servant-leadership nature of the office.
Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Nepali name: स्वस्थ शिक्षा र असल काम
Key terms: sound doctrine, good works, knowledge of the truth, adorn the doctrine
Review routing: Human theologian
स्वस्थ शिक्षा deliberately avoids सिद्धान्त, which in Nepali usage evokes a philosophical-system category (e.g. Vedanta सिद्धान्त, competing Buddhist सिद्धान्त schools) implying one system of thought among several rather than the unique apostolic teaching. असल काम must never be confused with पुण्य-कर्म, the merit-accumulating deeds of Hindu/Buddhist ethics that build toward better rebirth or liberation; here good works are fruit, never cause, of salvation.
Universal Scope of Grace
Nepali name: अनुग्रहको विश्वव्यापी दायरा
Key terms: all people, grace, gentleness toward all people
Review routing: Human theologian
Directly relevant given Nepal’s own history of legally codified caste hierarchy (the Muluki Ain, in force until 1963); ‘grace … to all people’ and ‘showing courtesy to all people’ must retain unqualified universality, paralleling the baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel doctrine, without any caste-linked softening.
Christian Hope and Eternal Life
Nepali name: मसीही आशा र अनन्त जीवन
Key terms: blessed hope, eternal life, heir
Review routing: Human theologian
This is a certain, fixed hope anchored in Christ’s promised return and unending personal communion with a personal God, not the uncertain, gradual progress toward liberation across possibly many lifetimes shared by Hindu and Buddhist frameworks; अनन्त जीवन must never be conflated with मुक्ति/मोक्ष (release from the rebirth cycle) or निर्वाण (cessation of self).
False Teachers and Discernment
Nepali name: झूटा शिक्षकहरू र विवेक
Key terms: empty talkers, deceivers, Jewish myths, a prophet of their own, to the pure all things are pure, defiled
Review routing: Human theologian
The Cretan-poet citation (1:12) must not be rendered with अगमवक्ता (the baseline’s term for God’s inspired spokesperson), which would wrongly imply Paul affirms a pagan literary figure as a genuine prophet of the true God; and ‘to the pure all things are pure’ (1:15) risks being heard through Hindu/Buddhist ritual-purity categories (शुद्ध/अशुद्ध, echoing caste-purity codes historically tied to the Muluki Ain) rather than Paul’s point about conscience-level purity transcending ritual food-law disputes.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Nepali name: विभाजनकारी विवादबाट टाढा रहनु
Key terms: foolish controversies, genealogies, quarrels about the law, divisive person, Jewish myths
Review routing: Native speaker review
Lower direct collision risk with dominant Nepali religious vocabulary than most doctrines in this book, but requires care that विभाजनकारी व्यक्ति not be read through the later, postbiblical technical sense of formal creedal ‘heresy,’ and that व्यवस्थाका बारेमा झगडा stays anchored to Mosaic Law disputes (व्यवस्था) rather than drifting toward a धर्म-rooted framing.
Household and Family Order
Nepali name: घरपरिवारको व्यवस्था
Key terms: older men, older women, younger women, younger men, slaves submit to masters, working at home
Review routing: Native speaker review
Household role-instructions require culturally sensitive contemporary application without weakening the underlying Spirit-produced character qualities (self-control, kindness, purity); risk is primarily one of application and consistency rather than direct syncretism, though it intersects with the submission_to_authority doctrine’s caste-hierarchy caution.
Mercy and Kindness of God
Nepali name: परमेश्वरको दया र भलमानसता
Key terms: kindness, loving-kindness, mercy
Review routing: Native speaker review
फिलान्थ्रोपिया (मानिसहरूप्रतिको प्रेम) risks flattening into secular NGO-style humanitarian benevolence divorced from the gospel, a live risk given how much visible Nepali Christian activity is expressed through development and disaster-relief work; must remain anchored to God’s specific saving action in Christ (3:5-7).
