Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Gospel of John
English → Nepali | Full Book Coverage, John 1–21
Method note: This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation, clear allusion, messianic reference, and typological pattern in John 1–21, together with the character and theme each connects to, and cross-maps each to the parallel doctrine already established in the baseline Romans package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json). Every citation is normalized to Book Chapter:Verse form (e.g., Genesis 15:6, Isaiah 53:1) using Arabic numerals, per the citation convention already fixed in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md. Nepali book-name equivalents are provided once in the Citation Conventions table below rather than repeated in every row. Translation-sensitivity ratings reuse the four-tier Critical/High/Medium/Low framework and routing convention already established in the baseline.
Citation Conventions (Extending the Baseline Table)
| English Book Name | Nepali Bible Name | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| John | यूहन्ना | New addition to the baseline’s book-name table; established Nepali Bible form for “यूहन्नाको सुसमाचार” (The Gospel according to John). |
| Genesis | उत्पत्ति | REUSED from baseline. |
| Exodus | प्रस्थान | New addition; established Nepali Bible form. |
| Numbers | गन्ती | New addition. |
| Deuteronomy | व्यवस्था | New addition. Note: identical Nepali word to the baseline’s rendering of νόμος (“law”) — context always disambiguates book-title use from doctrinal-term use; no conflict, but translators should be alert that “व्यवस्था” functions as both a proper noun (this book) and a common noun (the Law) throughout Scripture references. |
| Psalms | भजनसंग्रह | REUSED from baseline. |
| Isaiah | यशैया | REUSED from baseline. |
| Ezekiel | इजकिएल | New addition. |
| Daniel | दानियल | New addition. |
| Micah | मीका | New addition. |
| Zechariah | जकरिया | New addition. |
| Habakkuk | हबकूक | REUSED from baseline. |
| Joel | योएल | REUSED from baseline. |
| Hosea | होशे | New addition. |
| Romans | रोमी | REUSED from baseline. |
| Galatians | गलाती | New addition (style reference only). |
All Scripture references in Phase 2 output follow the format Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., John 3:16) or its Nepali equivalent (यूहन्ना ३:१६) per house style, to be confirmed with the reviewer per the baseline’s existing convention note.
PART 1 — CROSS-REFERENCE MATRIX (Chapter by Chapter)
Chapter 1 — The Word, the Witness, and the Incarnate Son
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 1:1 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | — (cosmic/eternal) | Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning…”) | High. सुरुमा must denote existence before creation, not merely at its onset. Echo must be recognizable to a reader with even minimal Genesis literacy. |
| John 1:1, 1:18 | Deity of Christ | — | (theological title θεός, cf. Romans 9:5) | Critical. परमेश्वर applied directly to the Word/Christ; must never be softened to a lesser or derivative divine status. |
| John 1:14a | Incarnation | — | Exodus 34:6 (LXX “full of mercy [ἔλεος] and truth [ἀλήθεια]“) | High. अनुग्रह र सत्य together echo YHWH’s self-revealed covenant character to Moses; must be taught as covenant-fulfillment language, not two unrelated virtues. |
| John 1:14b | Incarnation (Tabernacle typology) | — | Exodus 25:8-9; 40:34-35 (God’s glory filling the tabernacle) | High. “Dwelt/tabernacled among us” (ἐσκήνωσεν) presents Christ’s flesh as the true tabernacle — the locus of God’s presence with his people. Must not be rendered so as to suggest a deity temporarily indwelling an idol or shrine, a live risk given the prominence of murti (image) indwelling belief in Nepali Hindu devotional practice. |
| John 1:23 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | John the Baptist | Isaiah 40:3 (direct quotation) | Low-Medium. Established, unambiguous prophetic-fulfillment quotation. |
| John 1:29, 1:36 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | John the Baptist, Jesus | Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb); Isaiah 53:7 (“like a lamb led to the slaughter”); Genesis 22:8 (Abraham: “God will provide… a lamb,” typological) | Critical. परमेश्वरका थुमा. Must be taught against ongoing Nepali animal-sacrifice practice (Gadhimai, Dashain pashu-bali) as a once-for-all, sufficient sacrifice, not a repeatable offering. |
| John 1:45 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | Philip, Nathanael | General Pentateuchal/prophetic promise (cf. Deuteronomy 18:15) | Medium. |
| John 1:47 | Christian Identity / Israel typology | Nathanael, (echo of Jacob) | Genesis 27:35 (Jacob’s deceit, implicit contrast) | Low. Ironic contrast: Nathanael as “true Israelite,” unlike the deceit of Israel’s own patriarch-namesake. |
| John 1:51 | Deity of Christ / Unity of Father and Son | Jacob (typological) | Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder) | Medium-High. Christ himself, not a ladder or vision, is now the meeting-point of heaven and earth — a typological fulfillment worth flagging for teaching notes. |
Chapter 2 — Signs, the Temple, and the Appointed Hour
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 2:17 | Messianic zeal | Jesus | Psalm 69:9 (direct quotation) | Medium. |
| John 2:19-21 | Resurrection; Deity of Christ (Temple typology) | Jesus | 1 Kings 8:10-11; Ezekiel 43:1-5 (glory filling/returning to the temple), typological | High. “Temple of his body” — Christ’s risen body supersedes the physical Jerusalem Temple as the locus of God’s presence. Must be distinguished from the literal मन्दिर of 2:14-16 (see 08_core_glossary.md Table 2). |
Chapter 3 — The New Birth (Core Passage) and John the Baptist’s Testimony
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 3:3, 3:7 | New Birth and Regeneration | Nicodemus | Ezekiel 36:25-27 (“I will give you a new heart… a new spirit… I will put my Spirit within you”); Ezekiel 37:9-14 (breath/Spirit giving life to dry bones) | Critical. नयाँ जन्म. This is the New Testament fulfillment of Ezekiel’s new-covenant promise; a teaching note tying John 3:5 to Ezekiel 36 is recommended (already flagged in 07_semantic_analysis.md). |
| John 3:5 | New Birth; Holy Spirit | Nicodemus | Ezekiel 36:25-27 (water and Spirit combined); Isaiah 44:3 | High. पानी र आत्माद्वारा — must not evoke ritual purificatory bathing (see Chapter 4/7 below and the forbidden-substitution table in 08_core_glossary.md). |
| John 3:8 | New Birth (Spirit’s sovereignty) | — | Ecclesiastes 11:5 (the mystery of the wind/breath, thematic parallel); Genesis 1:2 (רוּח, ruach, hovering) | High. The untraceable-wind image reinforces the sovereign, unpredictable initiative of the Spirit in regeneration — the same Hebrew/Greek root (רוּח/πνεῦμα) means both “wind” and “spirit,” a pun lost in Nepali (हावा vs. आत्मा) and requiring a translator note. |
| John 3:13-14 | Deity/Pre-existence of Christ; Substitutionary Death | Moses (typological) | Numbers 21:8-9 (bronze serpent) | Critical. The serpent lifted up on a pole for healing typifies Christ lifted up on the cross for salvation — a direct, named typological fulfillment (Jesus himself draws the parallel). Must retain both the “lifted up” wordplay (crucified/exalted) and the OT background; a reader without Numbers 21 literacy needs a background note (already flagged in 07_semantic_analysis.md). |
| John 3:16 | God’s Love for the World | — | Thematic parallel: Genesis 3:15 (protoevangelium, God’s redemptive intent from the fall onward); direct NT parallel: Romans 5:8, Romans 8:32 | Critical. See Part 3 below for the Romans rendering-consistency rule. |
| John 3:18, 3:36 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | — | Thematic parallel: Romans 1:18 (wrath of God revealed against unrighteousness); Romans 5:16-18 (condemnation vs. justification as structural opposites) | High. See Part 3 below. |
| John 3:29 | Messianic identity | John the Baptist | Hosea 2:19-20; Isaiah 62:5 (God/Messiah as bridegroom of his people, thematic) | Low-Medium. |
Chapter 4 — Living Water and Worship in Spirit and Truth
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 4:6, 4:12 | Patriarchal background / Living Water contrast | Jacob (background), Samaritan woman | Genesis 33:19; 48:22 (Jacob’s well/land) | Low. |
| John 4:20-24 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; New Birth (worship “in spirit and truth”) | Samaritan woman | 2 Kings 17:24-41 (Samaritan origins); Deuteronomy 12:5-14 (centralized worship at the place YHWH chooses) | High. True worship transcends any single geographic sacred site — directly relevant given the sacred-geography emphasis of Nepali Hindu pilgrimage practice (Pashupatinath, Muktinath, the Bagmati). Must not be read as merely relocating sacred-site devotion from Jerusalem/Gerizim to a new physical location. |
| John 4:25-26 | Messianic Promise | Samaritan woman | General messianic expectation (cf. Deuteronomy 18:15) | High. |
Chapter 5 — The Son’s Authority and Two Resurrections
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 5:29 | Resurrection; Judgment | — | Daniel 12:2 (“many… shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt”) | Critical. REUSED पुनरुत्थान. Direct conceptual source for John’s “two resurrections.” Parallel: Romans 2:6-11 (impartial judgment “to each according to his deeds,” no distinction Jew/Gentile). |
| John 5:39, 5:45-47 | Fulfillment of Prophecy; Inspiration of Scripture | Moses | Deuteronomy 18:15-19 (the prophet like Moses); the whole Torah as witness to Christ | High. Establishes that the entire Hebrew Scripture, rightly read, testifies to Christ — directly relevant to the “inspiration_of_scripture” and “fulfillment_of_prophecy” doctrines already flagged High in the baseline. |
Chapter 6 — Bread of Life
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 6:31, 6:49 | Seven “I Am” Statements (#1); Eternal Life | — (crowd citing Moses) | Exodus 16:4, 16:15; Psalm 78:24 (direct quotation, “bread from heaven”) | Critical. Manna typology: the true, living Bread surpasses and fulfills the wilderness manna, which only sustained temporal life. Requires an OT background note per 07_semantic_analysis.md. |
| John 6:45 | New Birth; Holy Spirit (teaching ministry) | — | Isaiah 54:13 (direct quotation, “they shall all be taught by God”) | Medium. New-covenant teaching promise, connecting Christ’s present teaching to Isaiah’s future hope. |
| John 6:44 | Effectual Calling / Providence | — | Thematic parallel: Romans 8:29-30 (predestined, called); Romans 9:11-16 (election) | High. See Part 3 below. |
Chapter 7 — Living Water and Contested Messianic Identity
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 7:22 | Fulfillment/Law background | Moses | Genesis 17:10-12; Leviticus 12:3 (circumcision) | Low-Medium. |
| John 7:38-39 | Holy Spirit; Eternal Life | — | Isaiah 58:11; Ezekiel 47:1-9; Zechariah 14:8; Joel 3:18 (living/flowing water, eschatological abundance) | High. Directly identified in 7:39 as the Holy Spirit’s outpouring after Christ’s glorification — links Chapter 4’s living-water metaphor to Pentecost. |
| John 7:42 | Davidic Covenant; Messianic Promise | — (crowd debate) | Micah 5:2 (Bethlehem); 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic covenant); Psalm 89:3-4 | Critical. REUSE Romans TM exactly: दाऊदको वंश (seed_of_david), दाऊदी करार (davidic_covenant). The crowd’s debate dramatizes the same messianic-lineage question Romans 1:3 answers with settled confidence. |
Chapter 8 — “I Am” the Light of the World; the Divine Name
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 8:17 | Testimony/witness | — | Deuteronomy 19:15 (two-or-three-witnesses rule, direct legal citation) | Low. |
| John 8:56 | Deity/Pre-existence of Christ | Abraham | Genesis 12:1-3; 17:17-19 (Abrahamic promise and joy, implicit); thematic parallel Romans 4:1-25 (Abraham’s faith) | High. Abraham’s anticipatory joy in seeing Christ’s day connects directly to Romans 4’s extended treatment of Abraham as the pattern of justifying faith; rendering of “Abraham” (अब्राहाम, per baseline transliteration) must stay consistent across both curricula. |
| John 8:58 | Deity of Christ | — | Exodus 3:14 (LXX ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ὤν, “I AM WHO I AM”) | Critical. म हुँ. See 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md for full treatment; requires a translator/teacher’s note at every absolute occurrence. |
Chapter 9 — Sin, Blindness, and Worship of the Son of Man
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 9:1-7, 9:39 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; Messianic signs | The man born blind | Isaiah 35:5; 42:7; 61:1 (opening the eyes of the blind as a messianic-age sign) | High. The healing is a deliberate enactment of messianic-age prophecy, not a generic miracle; spiritual blindness as culpable unbelief (9:41) must retain moral, not merely circumstantial, force. |
Chapter 10 — The Door and the Good Shepherd; Unity of Father and Son
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 10:1-16 | Seven “I Am” Statements (#3, #4); Substitutionary Death | — | Ezekiel 34:11-16, 34:23-24 (God/the Davidic shepherd-king gathering and tending the flock); Psalm 23; Psalm 100:3; Numbers 27:16-17; Zechariah 11:4-17 | Critical. Christ fulfills and personally embodies Ezekiel’s promised shepherd; Israel’s failed human shepherds (Ezekiel 34:1-10) stand behind the contrast with “the good shepherd.” |
| John 10:16 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles (extended) | — | Thematic/structural parallel: Romans 11:17-24 (one olive tree); Romans 3:29-30 | High. See Part 3 below. |
| John 10:30 | Unity of the Father and the Son | — | (no direct OT citation; theological climax of the discourse) | Critical. म र पिता एक हौं. |
| John 10:34 | Deity of Christ (defense) | — | Psalm 82:6 (direct quotation, “I said, you are gods”) | Medium-High. A rhetorical a fortiori argument, not an endorsement of a plurality of divine beings. This requires a careful teaching note in the Nepali context specifically: an uncritical reading against the backdrop of an actively polytheistic surrounding culture could be misheard as Scripture affirming many gods. The note must clarify Jesus is arguing from the lesser (human judges metaphorically called “gods” as God’s representatives) to the greater (his own unique divine Sonship), not multiplying deities. |
Chapter 11 — Resurrection and the Life
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 11:25-26 | Seven “I Am” Statements (#5); Eternal Life; Resurrection | Lazarus, Martha | Daniel 12:2; typological background: Ezekiel 37:1-14 (valley of dry bones) | Critical. REUSED पुनरुत्थान; never पुनर्जन्म. |
| John 11:43-44 | Resurrection (foreshadowing sign) | Lazarus | Typological preview of Christ’s own resurrection (Ch. 20) | High. Lazarus’s raising is temporary (he will die again); Christ’s resurrection (Ch. 20) is the once-for-all, final-order event it foreshadows. This distinction must be preserved in teaching material. |
Chapter 12 — The Hour Arrives; Judgment of the World
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 12:13, 12:15 | Messianic Promise | Crowds at Jerusalem entry | Psalm 118:25-26 (direct quotation, “Hosanna”); Zechariah 9:9 (direct quotation, king on a donkey) | Critical. The triumphal entry deliberately enacts two distinct messianic OT texts simultaneously; both must be recognizable in the Nepali rendering, with background notes given the audience’s likely low OT festival-and-kingship literacy. |
| John 12:38 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; Fulfillment of Prophecy | — | Isaiah 53:1 (direct quotation, “Lord, who has believed our report?”) | Critical. This is the same verse quoted in Romans 10:16. See Part 3 rendering-consistency rule below — mandatory identical Nepali rendering across both curricula. |
| John 12:40 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | — | Isaiah 6:10 (direct quotation, judicial blinding/hardening) | High. Thematic parallel to Romans 11:8 (quoting Deuteronomy 29:4/Isaiah 29:10, “eyes that would not see”). See Part 3. |
| John 12:41 | Deity of Christ | Isaiah (the prophet) | Isaiah 6:1-4 (Isaiah’s vision of the LORD’s glory, here identified as a vision of Christ’s glory) | Critical. A direct identification of the pre-incarnate Christ with the enthroned YHWH of Isaiah’s temple vision — one of the most direct Deity-of-Christ texts in the book; must be flagged for theologian review. |
Chapter 13 — The New Commandment and Foot-Washing
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 13:18 | Fulfillment of Prophecy (betrayal) | Judas | Psalm 41:9 (direct quotation, “lifted up his heel against me”) | Medium. |
Chapter 14 — The Way, Truth, Life; the Paraclete
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 14:2 | Eschatological hope | — | Thematic echo: tabernacle/temple “dwelling” imagery (Exodus 25:8; Psalm 23:6) | Low-Medium. |
| John 14:16-17, 14:26 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | — | Thematic/structural parallel: Romans 8:26-27 (the Spirit helps/intercedes in weakness) | Critical. See Part 3 below. |
Chapter 15 — The True Vine; Abiding
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 15:1, 15:5 | Seven “I Am” Statements (#7); Christian Identity in Christ | — | Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7; Ezekiel 15:1-8; Ezekiel 17:5-10; Jeremiah 2:21 (Israel repeatedly portrayed as a vine that fails to bear good fruit) | Critical. Christ presents himself as the true vine — succeeding precisely where OT Israel, as the vine of God’s planting, is repeatedly indicted for failure. This contrast (fulfillment/replacement typology) should be made explicit in teaching notes; it is not a rejection of Israel but a Christological fulfillment of Israel’s calling. |
| John 15:25 | Fulfillment of Prophecy (unjust hatred) | — | Psalm 35:19; Psalm 69:4 (direct quotation, “hated me without a cause”) | Medium. |
Chapter 16 — The Spirit’s Ministry; Sorrow Turned to Joy
(No new direct OT quotations; continues themes and vocabulary established in Chapters 14–15 — see 07_semantic_analysis.md for full treatment of ἐλέγχω/“convict” continuity with John 3:20.)
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 16:8 | Holy Spirit as Counselor; Judgment | — | Continuity with John 3:20 (ἐλέγχω, “convict/expose”) | High. Rendering-consistency requirement within John itself; see 08_core_glossary.md. |
| John 16:33 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (victory) | — | Thematic parallel: Romans 8:37 (“more than conquerors”) | Critical. See Part 3 below. |
Chapter 17 — The High Priestly Prayer
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 17:3 | Eternal Life through Faith | — | Definitional anchor verse; thematic parallel: Romans 10:9-10 (confessional knowledge of Christ as the ground of salvation) | Critical. |
| John 17:1-5, 17:24 | Deity/Pre-existence of Christ; Unity of Father and Son | — | Exodus 33:18-23; 34:29-35 (Moses beholding YHWH’s glory, veiled/partial); contrast with the Son’s eternal, unveiled glory “before the world existed” | Critical. |
| John 17:11, 17:21-23 | Unity of the Father and the Son (extended to believers) | — | Thematic/structural parallel: Romans 12:4-5 (one body); Romans 15:5-6 (unity of mind) | Critical. See Part 3 below and the extended Advaita-risk note in 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md. |
Chapter 18 — Arrest and Trial: A Kingdom Not of This World
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 18:36 | Kingdom Mission | Pilate, Jesus | Thematic parallel: Romans 14:17 (the kingdom of God is not food/drink but righteousness, peace, joy — i.e., not a worldly/political kingdom) | High. |
| John 18:28, 18:39 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (Passover typology) | — | Exodus 12 (Passover background, ongoing) | Low, background note recommended. |
Chapter 19 — Crucifixion: “It Is Finished”
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 19:24 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Roman soldiers | Psalm 22:18 (direct quotation, dividing garments/casting lots) | High. |
| John 19:28 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Psalm 69:21 (direct quotation, “I thirst”) | Medium. |
| John 19:30 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Thematic parallel: Romans 5:6-11; Romans 3:25 (propitiation, once for all) | High. See Part 3 below. |
| John 19:36 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (Passover Lamb typology fulfilled) | Jesus | Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20 (direct quotation, “not one of his bones will be broken”) | Critical. Directly completes the John 1:29/1:36 Lamb-of-God typology first introduced at the book’s opening — the Passover lamb’s ritual requirements are literally fulfilled in Christ’s body. |
| John 19:37 | Messianic Promise; Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | — | Zechariah 12:10 (direct quotation, “they will look on him whom they have pierced”) | High. |
Chapter 20 — Resurrection: “My Lord and My God”
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 20:9 | Resurrection; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Peter, “the other disciple” | Thematic background: Psalm 16:10; Hosea 6:2 | Critical. The narrator’s comment that the disciples “did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead” retroactively frames the whole OT as anticipating bodily resurrection. |
| John 20:28 | Deity of Christ; Unity of the Father and the Son | Thomas | Thematic/structural parallel: Romans 9:5 (Christ, “God over all”); Romans 10:9 (confession of Lordship) | Critical. See Part 3 below. |
Chapter 21 — Shepherd, Follow, and the Two Words for Love
| John Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 21:15-17 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (shepherd commission); Church as God’s People | Peter | Continuity with Ezekiel 34 typology (Chapter 10) | High. The risen Christ commissions Peter into the very shepherding role Ezekiel 34 promises God himself will fulfill — Peter’s ministry is derivative and accountable to Christ, the true Shepherd, not an independent authority. |
PART 2 — MESSIANIC REFERENCES AND TYPOLOGICAL PATTERNS
Messianic References (Direct OT Texts John Presents as Fulfilled in Jesus)
| OT Text | John’s Use | Fulfillment Claim |
|---|---|---|
Genesis 3:15 | Thematic background to John 3:16 | The first promise of a redeemer, developed across the whole canon into God’s giving of the Son. |
Numbers 21:8-9 | John 3:14 | The bronze serpent, lifted up for healing, typifies Christ lifted up for salvation. |
Deuteronomy 18:15-19 | John 1:45; 5:46; 6:14; 7:40 | ”The prophet like Moses” — a recurring crowd/disciple identification of Jesus. |
2 Samuel 7:12-16; Micah 5:2 | John 7:42 | Davidic lineage and Bethlehem birthplace — contested but ultimately affirmed messianic credentials. |
Psalm 118:25-26 | John 12:13 | ”Hosanna… blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” — acclaimed at the triumphal entry. |
Zechariah 9:9 | John 12:15 | The king who comes “on a donkey” — deliberately enacted by Jesus. |
Isaiah 53:1, 53:7 | John 1:29, 1:36; 12:38 | The Suffering Servant, both as sacrificial Lamb and as the one Israel largely fails to believe. |
Psalm 22:18; Psalm 69:21; Psalm 34:20; Zechariah 12:10 | John 19:24, 28, 36-37 | The crucifixion narrative is presented as the detailed, literal fulfillment of multiple independent OT texts converging on a single historical event. |
Daniel 7:13-14 | Background to every “Son of Man” self-designation | The heavenly figure given universal, everlasting dominion — underlying Jesus’ most frequent self-title in John. |
Isaiah 6:1-4 | John 12:41 | Isaiah’s temple vision of YHWH’s glory identified as a vision of Christ’s pre-incarnate glory. |
Exodus 3:14 | John 8:58 and the absolute ἐγώ εἰμι sayings | The divine self-naming formula, deliberately echoed as a direct deity claim. |
Typological Patterns (Old Testament Persons, Objects, and Institutions Fulfilled in Christ)
| OT Type | NT Fulfillment in John | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| The Tabernacle/Temple (God’s dwelling with his people) | John 1:14 (“the Word… tabernacled among us”); John 2:19-21 (“temple of his body”) | Christ himself is the true and final locus of God’s presence, superseding both the wilderness tabernacle and the Jerusalem Temple. |
| The Passover Lamb (Exodus 12) | John 1:29, 1:36; 19:36 | Explicit “Lamb of God” identification at the Gospel’s opening, literally fulfilled in the unbroken-bones detail at the crucifixion. |
| The Bronze Serpent (Numbers 21:8-9) | John 3:14-15 | Jesus himself draws this typological connection; healing-by-looking becomes life-by-believing. |
| The Manna (Exodus 16) | John 6:31-51 | Temporal, repeatable sustenance surpassed by the once-given, eternally sustaining Bread of Life. |
| Jacob’s Ladder (Genesis 28:12) | John 1:51 | Christ himself, not a vision or a place, is the meeting-point of heaven and earth. |
| The Shepherd-King (Ezekiel 34; Psalm 23) | John 10:1-16; 21:15-17 | God’s promise to shepherd his own flock personally is fulfilled in Christ and then extended, under his authority, through Peter. |
| The Vine (Psalm 80; Isaiah 5; Ezekiel 15, 17; Jeremiah 2) | John 15:1-8 | Israel’s repeated failure as God’s vine is succeeded and fulfilled by Christ, the true, fruitful Vine. |
| Isaac, the beloved/only son offered by his father (Genesis 22) | John 1:29 (Genesis 22:8 echo); background to μονογενής (John 1:14, 1:18; 3:16) | A partial, non-consummated type; unlike Isaac, the only Son is not spared but given. |
| Moses, the mediator and prophet (Exodus–Deuteronomy) | John 1:17-18 (contrast, “the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ”); John 5:45-47 | Continuity (God’s chosen mediator) and contrast (partial revelation superseded by full revelation). |
PART 3 — PARALLELS TO OTHER CURRICULA IN THIS LANGUAGE (ESPECIALLY ROMANS)
This section identifies passages where John’s theology directly parallels, echoes, or shares source material with Romans, and establishes rendering-consistency rules to ensure a Nepali learner moving between the Romans and John curricula encounters identical vocabulary for identical concepts.
3.1 Shared Old Testament Quotation Requiring Verbatim Consistency
| OT Source | Quoted In | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|
Isaiah 53:1 (“Lord, who has believed our report / what we have heard?”) | Romans 10:16 and John 12:38 — the identical OT verse, quoted independently by both Paul and John | MANDATORY: the Nepali rendering of Isaiah 53:1 must be word-for-word identical in both the Romans and John curricula. Any Phase 2 translator encountering this verse in either book must first check the translation memory for the other book’s existing rendering before producing a new one; whichever is translated first becomes the fixed form for both. |
3.2 Shared Theme with Distinct but Doctrinally Linked Texts
| Theme | John Text | Romans Text | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Judicial hardening/blinding of unbelief | John 12:40 (quoting Isaiah 6:10) | Romans 11:8 (quoting Deuteronomy 29:4/Isaiah 29:10) | Both describe God’s judicial response to persistent unbelief using “eyes that do not see” imagery from different OT source texts. Use consistent vocabulary for “hardened/blinded” (दृष्टि/हृदय कठोर हुनु, आँखा अन्धा हुनु) across both curricula so a learner recognizes the shared theological pattern even though the underlying OT citations differ. |
| God’s initiating, self-giving love as the ground of salvation | John 3:16 | Romans 5:8 (“God shows his love for us in that… Christ died for us”); Romans 8:32 (“he did not withhold his own Son”) | The verb प्रेम गर्नु (REUSED, agapaō root) must be used identically in both curricula for God’s initiating love toward sinners; translators must not substitute a devotional-upward-directed love term in either book (see the baseline’s existing “agape direction” caution in 07_semantic_analysis.md). |
| Condemnation/no condemnation as the forensic opposite of justification | John 3:18 (already condemned) | Romans 5:16-18 (condemnation vs. justification); Romans 8:1 (“no condemnation for those in Christ”) | REUSE the baseline’s forensic pairing: दोषी ठहराउनु (condemn) as the structural opposite of धर्मी ठहराइने कार्य (justification). Both curricula must use this same forensic word-pair; John must not introduce a softer or more general “punish” term where the forensic sense is intended. |
| Election/effectual calling as God’s sovereign initiative | John 6:44 (“no one can come to me unless the Father… draws him”) | Romans 8:29-30; Romans 9:11-16 | REUSE the baseline’s प्रभावकारी बोलावट (effectual_calling) doctrine name and परमेश्वरको छनोट (election) term where John’s “drawing” language is being taught alongside Romans’ election language; तान्नु (“draw”) is a new John-specific term but must be explicitly cross-referenced to the Romans election doctrine in teaching notes, not treated as an unrelated new idea. |
| Slavery to sin vs. freedom/righteousness | John 8:34-36 | Romans 6:16-22 | REUSE पाप (sin, Critical) consistently; both passages describe the same bondage-to-freedom pattern. दास (slave/bondservant) and स्वतन्त्र (free) should be used consistently across both curricula. |
| Unity of Jews and Gentiles in one people of God | John 10:16 (“one flock, one shepherd”) | Romans 11:17-24 (one olive tree); Romans 3:29-30 | REUSE the baseline’s doctrine name यहूदी र अन्यजातिहरूको एकता (unity_of_jews_and_gentiles). The shepherd/flock metaphor (new to John) and the olive-tree metaphor (Romans) are distinct images teaching the identical doctrine — teaching notes should make this identity explicit rather than presenting them as separate teachings. |
| Dependent, fruit-bearing union with Christ vs. self-generated moral effort | John 15:4-5 (“apart from me you can do nothing”) | Romans 11:17-24 (branches grafted into, dependent on, the root); thematic parallel to grace-vs-merit throughout Romans 3-4 | Both texts use organic/agricultural metaphors (vine/branches; olive tree/branches) to make the identical point: fruitfulness/inclusion is entirely grace-dependent, never self-generated. रहनु (“abide,” new to John) should be taught alongside, not as a substitute for, the Romans grace vocabulary (अनुग्रह). |
| The Spirit’s help/intercession for believers | John 14:16-17, 14:26 (the Paraclete/सहायक) | Romans 8:26-27 (the Spirit intercedes/helps in weakness, using मध्यस्थता, intercession) | REUSE पवित्र आत्मा (Critical, baseline) as the underlying Person in both texts. सहायक (Helper/Counselor, new to John) and मध्यस्थता (intercession, REUSED from Romans) describe complementary facets of the same Spirit’s ministry; teaching notes should present them as continuous, not competing, vocabulary. |
| Victory/overcoming through Christ | John 16:33 (“I have overcome the world”) | Romans 8:37 (“more than conquerors through him who loved us”) | जित्नु (overcome/conquer) should be used consistently in both curricula for this victory motif; both are grounded in Christ’s accomplished work, not human effort. |
| Christ’s substitutionary death as sufficient, once-for-all propitiation | John 19:30 (“it is finished”) | Romans 3:25 (propitiation); Romans 5:6-11 (Christ died for us while we were sinners) | पूरा भयो (John, new) and the baseline’s existing atonement vocabulary must both be taught as describing the identical accomplished, sufficient, substitutionary work — see the forbidden “duty-discharge” framing already flagged in 08_core_glossary.md Table 4. |
| Direct confession of Christ’s full deity and Lordship | John 20:28 (“my Lord and my God”) | Romans 9:5 (“Christ… who is God over all”); Romans 10:9 (“Jesus is Lord”) | MANDATORY consistency. REUSE both प्रभु and परमेश्वर (both Critical, baseline) exactly. Since Romans 10:9’s confession is already fixed as येशू प्रभु हुनुहुन्छ per the baseline’s cross-document consistency rule, John 20:28’s मेरा प्रभु र मेरा परमेश्वर must use the identical root terms with no variation in register or word choice. |
| Unity of persons without loss of distinct personhood | John 10:30; John 17:11, 17:21-23 | Romans 12:4-5 (one body, many members); Romans 15:5-6 (unity of mind) | The Father-Son unity (John 10:30, Critical) and the prayed-for unity of believers (John 17, Critical) must both be distinguished in teaching material from Romans’ “one body” language: Romans’ “one body” is a functional/corporate metaphor (many distinct members serving one purpose), while John 17’s “one” is relational/volitional unity modeled on, but not identical to, the Father-Son ontological unity of essence. Do not collapse the two into a single undifferentiated “unity” vocabulary — each requires its own teaching note, and John 17 in particular requires the mandatory Advaita-risk note already established in 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Eternal life as personal, relational knowledge of God, received now | John 17:3; John 3:15-16, 3:36; John 5:24 | Romans 6:22-23 (“the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”) | REUSE अनन्त जीवन (Critical, new to John but must be added to the shared translation memory) with the dual-front forbidden-substitution rule identical to the baseline’s “salvation” entry (never मोक्ष/मुक्ति/निर्वाण). Romans 6:23 and John 17:3 should be treated as mutually defining anchor verses across both curricula. |
3.3 Doctrine-Registry Cross-Mapping Summary
| Baseline Romans Doctrine | Corresponding John Doctrine (this curriculum) | Relationship |
|---|---|---|
| Salvation (उद्धार) | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ (अनन्त जीवन) | Complementary vocabulary for the same soteriological reality — Romans emphasizes deliverance/rescue framing; John emphasizes relational/qualitative-life framing. Both require the identical dual-front forbidden-substitution rule. |
| Grace (अनुग्रह) | God’s Love for the World (प्रेम) | Grace is the mode; love is the motive. Both stand against the same karma-merit accounting framework. |
| Incarnation (देहधारण) | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (वचन देहधारी हुनुभयो) | John supplies the fullest single-verse incarnation statement (John 1:14) undergirding the baseline’s existing doctrine. |
| Resurrection of Christ (पुनरुत्थान) | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | John supplies the fullest narrative treatment (chs. 11, 19-20) of the doctrine the baseline already protects as Critical. |
| Effectual Calling (प्रभावकारी बोलावट) | (implicit within Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; explicit at John 6:44) | Direct doctrinal continuity; John’s “drawing” language should be taught as this same doctrine, not a new one. |
| Unity of Jews and Gentiles | (implicit within Unity of the Father and the Son doctrine’s extension to believers, John 10:16, 17:21) | Same doctrine, different governing metaphor (flock/shepherd and Father-Son unity vs. Romans’ olive tree and body). |
| Sanctification (पवित्रीकरण) | (implicit within New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit) | John 17:17, 17:19 directly reuse the baseline term; New Birth is regeneration’s inception, sanctification its continuation — both curricula should make this sequence explicit. |
Coverage Confirmation
All 21 chapters of the Gospel of John have been reviewed for Old Testament quotations, clear allusions, messianic references, and typological patterns, and cross-mapped to the baseline Romans doctrine and terminology framework. Chapters with the highest concentration of direct OT quotations are 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 12, 15, and 19 (Passion narrative). Chapters 13, 16, 18, and 21 contain few or no independent OT quotations and are noted above as continuing previously established themes and vocabulary rather than introducing new cross-reference material — this is stated explicitly rather than silently omitted, per the full-book-coverage mandate.
See 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md for full term-level doctrinal justification.
See 10_biblical_theme_map.md for the book’s macro-structural theme development.
All shared-quotation and shared-doctrine rendering-consistency rules in Part 3 above are binding on Phase 2 segment translation for both the Romans and John curricula and must be enforced via the shared translation_memory.json.
