Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: 1 Thessalonians (Koine Greek → Nepali)

Methodology and Baseline Integration

This analysis covers 1 Thessalonians in its entirety, chapter 1 through chapter 5, in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level study of its load-bearing theological terms using the same analytical fields: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning in 1 Thessalonians, and destination-language (Nepali) rendering risk.

Baseline reuse rule: Any term already established in the Romans translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json (gospel, grace, faith, church, holy, saints, sanctification, calling/called, election, resurrection, salvation, peace, glory, kingdom_of_god, gentiles, lord, jesus, god, holy_spirit, father, thanksgiving, exhort, prophecy) is reused exactly as recorded in the baseline. This document does not re-derive those renderings; it only notes where and how they occur in 1 Thessalonians and flags any additional nuance the new curriculum context introduces. New terms not present in the Romans baseline are analyzed in full and proposed for addition to translation memory in Step 8 (Core Glossary).

Doctrinal anchors for this curriculum: The Return of Christ, Resurrection of Believers, Sanctification, Hope in Grief, The Day of the Lord. These five doctrines govern risk-tier escalation throughout this analysis, consistent with the baseline’s Critical/High/Medium/Low framework.

PART A — Core Passage: 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 (Verse-by-Verse)

4:13

“But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.”

Term (Greek / Translit.)Literal Meaning / Semantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering & Risk
ἀγνοεῖν (agnoein)“to not know, be ignorant of""uninformed” (ESV), “ignorant” (KJV), “in the dark” (NIV)Paul is correcting a specific pastoral gap in the church’s teaching, not general ignorance.थाहा नहुनु / अनजान (thaha nahunu). Low risk; standard verb, no doctrinal collision.
ἀδελφοί (adelphoi)“brothers” (kinship term extended to spiritual family)“brothers,” “brothers and sisters” (NIV inclusive)Marks pastoral, familial address — the church as God’s household.भाइहरू / भाइबहिनीहरू. Low risk; established Nepali Christian usage.
κοιμωμένων (koimōmenōn), from κοιμάομαι (koimaomai)Literally “those who are sleeping”; a common Koine euphemism for the death of believers”asleep” (ESV/KJV), “fallen asleep” (NIV), “died” (some paraphrases wrongly flatten this)Death of a believer is temporary “rest,” not annihilation, not extinguishing of self, and not a transition into a new rebirth. The euphemism itself carries resurrection hope.निदाएका (nidaeka — “having fallen asleep”). High risk. Must preserve the euphemism (rest awaiting bodily resurrection), not read as literal unconsciousness/soul-sleep, and critically must not be assimilated to the Tibetan Buddhist bardo (an intermediate transitional state between death and rebirth), a live doctrinal category among Nepal’s Himalayan Buddhist-heritage communities. A translator note is required distinguishing “asleep in Christ” from any transitional-rebirth state.
λυπῆσθε (lypēsthe), from λυπέω (lypeō)“to grieve, be sorrowful, be distressed""grieve” (ESV), “sorrow” (KJV), “be overcome by grief” (NIV)Paul does not forbid grief itself (cf. 1 Thess 4:13’s implicit permission to grieve differently) but grief without resurrection hope.शोक गर्नु / दुःखी हुनु. Low-Medium risk; ensure the contrast is “grieving without hope” vs. “grieving with hope,” not “grieving” vs. “not grieving.”
οἱ λοιποί (hoi loipoi)“the rest, the others""others” (ESV/NIV), “others which have no hope” (KJV)Refers to unbelieving Gentiles/pagans, whose frameworks for death offered no personal, resurrection-grounded hope.बाँकीहरू / अरूहरू. Low risk.
ἐλπίδα (elpida), from ἐλπίς (elpis)“hope, expectation, confident expectation of a future good""hope” (all major versions)Not wishful optimism but certain expectation grounded in Christ’s own resurrection (v.14). Central to the curriculum doctrine “Hope in Grief.”आशा (asha). High risk. Nepali Hindu and Buddhist frameworks also offer their own “hope” at death — hope of a favorable rebirth, progress toward mokṣa, or eventual liberation across many lifetimes. Christian आशा here must be anchored explicitly to a single, historical, bodily resurrection event, not a hope of cyclical advancement. See doctrine entry “Hope in Grief” below.

4:14

“For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so through Jesus God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering & Risk
πιστεύομεν (pisteuomen), from πιστεύω / πίστις
”we believe, we trust"
"believe” (all versions)The doctrinal ground of the entire passage: the church’s shared conviction about Jesus’s death and resurrection. Reuses baseline faith term.विश्वास गर्छौं — reuse baseline विश्वास (vishwas). Already High risk per baseline; no new risk introduced.
ἀπέθανεν (apethanen), from ἀποθνήσκω
”died"
"died” (all versions)Christ’s real, historical death — presupposes the baseline incarnation/humanity of Christ doctrines.मर्नुभयो. Low risk; standard.
ἀνέστη (anestē), from ἀνίστημι (cognate of ἀνάστασις)
“rose, stood up again” — the verbal form of the noun already governing baseline resurrection
”rose again” (ESV/KJV), “rose” (NIV)Christ’s bodily resurrection is the guarantee and pattern for believers’ own future resurrection (v.16). This is the doctrinal hinge linking “Resurrection of Christ” (baseline, Romans) to “Resurrection of Believers” (new, 1 Thessalonians).उठ्नुभयो / पुनरुत्थान भयो — verb form built on the baseline noun पुनरुत्थान (punarutthan). Critical. NEVER पुनर्जन्म. The believer’s future rising must be understood as the same category of event as Christ’s own bodily rising — once-for-all, historical, non-cyclical — not a rebirth into a new life within saṃsāra.
ἄξει (axei), from ἄγω
”will bring, will lead"
"will bring” (ESV/NIV), “will…bring” (KJV)God is the active subject; the dead in Christ do not merely “arise” on their own but are brought by God’s own action, alongside Christ’s own return.ल्याउनुहुनेछ. Low risk.
σὺν αὐτῷ (syn autō)
“with him"
"with him” (all versions)Believers who have died are already, in some sense, with Christ, and will be brought back with him at his return — a key comfort verse for grief.उहाँसँगै. Low risk.

4:15

“For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering & Risk
λόγῳ κυρίου (logō kyriou)
“by a word of/from the Lord"
"word from the Lord” (ESV), “word of the Lord” (KJV/NIV)Paul grounds this teaching in direct revelatory authority, not personal speculation — parallel to baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture doctrine.प्रभुको वचनद्वारा. New term वचन (vachan, “word”) proposed for glossary — see Core Glossary. Medium risk; must be read as God’s personal, authoritative message, not an impersonal sacred-sound/mantra concept.
οἱ ζῶντες (hoi zōntes)
“the living ones"
"we who are alive” (ESV), “we which are alive” (KJV)The generation of believers alive at Christ’s return.जीवितहरू. Low risk.
οἱ περιλειπόμενοι (hoi perileipomenoi), from περιλείπομαι
”those remaining, those left behind"
"who are left” (ESV/KJV), “who are still alive” (NIV)Emphasizes survival to the moment of Christ’s coming, in contrast to those already asleep.बाँकी रहेकाहरू. Low risk.
παρουσία τοῦ κυρίου (parousia tou kyriou)
Literally “presence, arrival”; in Hellenistic usage, the ceremonial arrival of a king, emperor, or dignitary into a city
”coming” (ESV/NIV), “coming of the Lord” (KJV)The technical term for Christ’s personal, visible, bodily return — the doctrine “The Return of Christ.”प्रभुको आगमन (Prabhuko aagaman). Critical. Deliberately renders with आगमन (“arrival/coming”) rather than पुनरागमन (“re-coming”), to avoid any surface resemblance to the पुनर् root already flagged as dangerous in the baseline (पुनर्जन्म/rebirth). Also must be clearly distinguished from Hindu Kalki-avatar eschatology — the popular expectation of a future avatar-descent of Vishnu at the end of the current age to destroy evil and restore dharma. Christ’s parousia is the return of the same historical, incarnate, crucified, and risen Lord — not a new avatar-descent, and not one of a repeatable series of divine manifestations (cf. baseline देहधारण/incarnation notes on avatar theology).
φθάσωμεν (phthasōmen), from φθάνω
”to precede, arrive first, get ahead of"
"precede” (ESV), “prevent” (KJV, archaic sense of “go before”), “will not go ahead of” (NIV)Corrects the Thessalonians’ apparent fear that the dead would somehow miss out on or lag behind the living at Christ’s coming.अगि पर्नेछैनौं. Low-Medium risk; ensure the negation is clear (the living will NOT go ahead of the dead).

4:16

“For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering & Risk
αὐτὸς ὁ κύριος (autos ho kyrios)
“the Lord himself” (emphatic)
“the Lord himself” (all versions)Emphasizes that Christ personally, not an angel or intermediary, executes the return. Reinforces baseline lordship_of_christ.Reuse baseline प्रभु (prabhu). Emphatic pronoun rendered प्रभु आफैं. Critical per baseline; no deviation.
καταβήσεται (katabēsetai), from καταβαίνω
”will come down, descend"
"will descend” (ESV/NIV), “shall descend” (KJV)A visible, spatial, bodily descent — not a symbolic or purely spiritual “coming.”ओर्लनुहुनेछ. Low-Medium risk; preserve the physical, bodily sense against any purely inward/mystical reinterpretation.
ἀπ’ οὐρανοῦ (ap’ ouranou)
“from heaven"
"from heaven” (all versions)Heaven as God’s dwelling and the place from which Christ departed at his ascension and to which he returns.स्वर्गबाट. Low risk.
κελεύσματι (keleusmati), from κέλευσμα
”a shout of command,” military/naval term for an order given to troops or rowers
”cry of command” (ESV), “shout” (KJV: “with a shout”), “loud command” (NIV)Depicts Christ’s return as a sovereign, commanding act — not a quiet or negotiable event.आज्ञाको सोर (agyako sor). Low-Medium risk; standard.
φωνῇ ἀρχαγγέλου (phōnē archangelou)
“with the voice of an archangel"
"voice of an archangel” (all major versions)Marks the cosmic, heraldic scale of the event.प्रधान स्वर्गदूतको सोर (pradhan swargadootko sor). Low-Medium risk; new term — see Core Glossary.
σάλπιγγι θεοῦ (salpinggi theou)
“with the trumpet of God"
"trumpet of God” (ESV/KJV), “trumpet call of God” (NIV)Echoes Old Testament theophany and covenant-assembly trumpet imagery (e.g., Sinai); signals God’s own summons.परमेश्वरको तुरही. Low risk; standard instrument term, no cultural collision.
οἱ νεκροὶ ἐν Χριστῷ (hoi nekroi en Christō)
“the dead in Christ"
"the dead in Christ” (all versions)Specifically believers who have died — union with Christ (baseline christian_identity_in_christ) persists even through death.ख्रीष्टमा भएका मृतकहरू. Medium risk; ensure “ख्रीष्टमा” (in Christ) is retained, not simplified to a generic “dead people.”
ἀναστήσονται πρῶτον (anastēsontai prōton)
“will rise/be resurrected first"
"will rise first” (ESV/NIV), “shall rise first” (KJV)The doctrinal center of the passage: bodily, historical, once-for-all resurrection, in a fixed order (dead first, then living transformed).पहिले उठाइनेछन् — verb form of baseline पुनरुत्थान. Critical. Same forbidden-substitution rule as baseline: never पुनर्जन्म.

4:17

“Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering & Risk
ἁρπαγησόμεθα (harpagēsometha), from ἁρπάζω (harpazō)
“will be seized, snatched, caught up (by force)” — passive voice: something is done to believers
”caught up” (ESV/KJV/NIV)The origin of the theological term “rapture.” Emphasizes a sudden, powerful, divinely-initiated act — not a gradual ascent achieved through discipline or merit.उचालिनेछौं (uchalinechhau — “will be caught up/lifted”). High risk. Must be read as a sovereign act done to believers by God’s power, not as a spiritual attainment. Specifically distinguish from siddhi-style yogic/tantric levitation or ascension attainments associated with advanced meditative practitioners in Nepal’s Newar Tantric tradition (cf. baseline’s caution on शक्ति/power-of-God). This is corporate and universal among believers, not an individual mystical achievement.
ἐν νεφέλαις (en nephelais)
“in/among the clouds"
"in the clouds” (all versions)Recalls Old Testament theophany cloud-imagery (e.g., the Son of Man in Daniel 7, Christ’s ascension in Acts 1).बादलहरूमा. Low risk.
εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ κυρίου (eis apantēsin tou kyriou)
“to meet the Lord” — ἀπάντησις is a semi-technical Hellenistic term for citizens going out from a city to formally welcome and escort an arriving king or dignitary back in
”to meet the Lord” (ESV/NIV), “to meet the Lord” (KJV)Believers go out to escort the returning King — an image of triumphal welcome, not passive waiting.प्रभुलाई स्वागत गर्न भेट्न जानु. Medium risk; a translator note explaining the Greco-Roman civic-welcome custom is recommended so this is not read as a mere chance meeting.
εἰς ἀέρα (eis aera)
“into the air"
"in the air” (all versions)The meeting-place of the transformed, gathered church with the returning Lord, prior to his final descent to earth (cf. later NT eschatology).आकाशमा. Low risk.
πάντοτε σὺν κυρίῳ (pantote syn kyriō)
“always with the Lord"
"always with the Lord” (all versions)The climactic promise of the passage: permanent, unbroken presence with Christ — the true ground of Christian hope. Directly serves the doctrine “Hope in Grief.”सधैंभरि प्रभुसँगै. Low-Medium risk; should be rendered with warmth and permanence, avoiding language that could be read as merely a temporary heavenly stage before further transitions (again guarding against rebirth-cycle assumptions).

4:18

“Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering & Risk
παρακαλεῖτε (parakaleite), from παρακαλέω
”encourage, comfort, exhort, build up"
"encourage” (ESV/NIV), “comfort” (KJV)Here in the “encourage/build up” sense, not the “beseech” sense. Reuses baseline exhort entry’s context-sensitivity note.Reuse baseline उत्साहित पार्नु (utsahit parnu). Low risk per baseline; correct sense selected (comfort/build up, given the grief context of vv.13-14).
ἀλλήλους (allēlous)
“one another"
"one another” (all versions)Mutual, reciprocal ministry within the church body — practical outworking of “Christian Fellowship.”एकअर्कालाई. Low risk.
τοῖς λόγοις τούτοις (tois logois toutois)
“with these words"
"with these words” (all versions)The preceding resurrection/return teaching (vv.13-17) is explicitly pastoral material meant for mutual comfort in grief, not abstract doctrine.यी वचनहरूले. Low risk.

PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book

Chapter 1 — Election, Conversion from Idols, Coming Wrath

Chapter 1 introduces the church’s founding, reuses several baseline terms (gospel सुसमाचार, 1:5; faith विश्वास, 1:3,8; election परमेश्वरको छनोट, 1:4 “your election by him”; holy_spirit पवित्र आत्मा, 1:5-6; church मण्डली, 1:1; father पिता, 1:1,3; thanksgiving धन्यवाद, 1:2), and introduces the following new load-bearing terms:

Term (Greek/Translit.)Literal Meaning / Semantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering & Risk
μιμηταί (mimētai)“imitators""imitators” (ESV/NIV), “followers” (KJV)The Thessalonians became imitators of Paul and of the Lord (1:6) — a discipleship, not master-guru-disciple, pattern.अनुसरण गर्नेहरू. Low risk; care to avoid connotations of a guru-disciple lineage relationship common in Hindu/Buddhist spiritual formation, since the imitation here is of Christlike character, not transmission of secret teaching.
εἴδωλα (eidōla), from εἴδωλον (eidōlon)“idols, images""idols” (all versions)1:9: “you turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God.”मूर्ति (murti). Critical. This term names the exact devotional images at the center of everyday Hindu (mūrti pūjā) and Buddhist practice throughout Nepal — not an abstract or distant category. Must be paired with the contrast phrase “जीवित र साँचो परमेश्वर” (the living and true God) so the theological logic of the conversion is clear. Teaching material must present this as Paul’s historically situated description of the Thessalonians’ own conversion, not as an inflammatory generic attack on Nepali ancestral religious practice.
ὀργή (orgē)“wrath, settled anger""wrath” (ESV/KJV/NIV)1:10: Jesus “delivers us from the wrath to come” — the coming, certain, divine judgment, first mention of the Day-of-the-Lord theme developed in ch. 5.क्रोध (krodh). High risk. Must be understood as God’s settled, righteous, judicial response to sin — not the volatile, appeasable anger of Hindu/Tantric deities (including wrathful protector deities) who can be pacified through ritual offering apart from Christ. See also 5:9.

Chapter 2 — Paul’s Ministry, the Word of God, the Crown at Christ’s Coming

Reuses baseline gospel (सुसमाचार, 2:2,4,8,9), kingdom_of_god (परमेश्वरको राज्य, 2:12 “kingdom and glory”), glory (महिमा, 2:12,20), calling/called (बोलाइएका, 2:12), holy_spirit, father, thanksgiving. New terms:

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering & Risk
λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ (logos tou theou)
“word of God"
"word of God” (all versions)2:13: the message received “not as the word of men but… the word of God, which is at work in you.”परमेश्वरको वचन (Parameshwarko vachan). New glossary entry: वचन (vachan, “word/message”). Medium risk; must convey God’s personal, authoritative communication — distinct from Hindu concepts of śabda/mantra as an impersonal cosmic-sonic power activated through correct ritual recitation.
κόπος καὶ μόχθος (kopos kai mochthos)
“toil and labor / hardship"
"toil and labor” (ESV), “labour and travail” (KJV)2:9: Paul’s self-supporting, sacrificial ministry labor.परिश्रम र कष्ट. Low risk.
δόλος (dolos)
“deceit, trickery"
"deceit” (ESV), “guile” (KJV)2:3: Paul’s appeal did not spring from deceit — ministry integrity.छल. Low risk.
σατανᾶς (satanas)
“Satan,” transliterated proper name of the chief adversary
”Satan” (all versions)2:18: “Satan hindered us” — a personal, opposing spiritual agent obstructing gospel work.शैतान (shaitan). High risk. Must be distinguished from Nepal’s broader animistic/folk spirit taxonomy (bhūt-pret, maśān, boksī/witchcraft categories, and Tantric wrathful protector deities), all of which are typically negotiable or placatable through ritual. Satan is one specific, personal, fallen created being, God’s singular chief adversary — not one spirit-power among many that can be managed through ritual means.
παρουσία (parousia)
see 4:15 analysis above
”coming” (all versions)2:19: Paul’s converts will be his “crown of boasting” “at his coming.”Reuse the newly-established आगमन rendering — see Core Passage 4:15 entry. Critical; must be identical across all occurrences (2:19; 3:13; 4:15; 5:23).

Chapter 3 — Faith Established, Affliction, Blamelessness at the Coming

Reuses baseline faith (विश्वास, 3:2,5-10), holy_spirit, father, saints (पवित्र जन, 3:13), glory. New/expanded terms:

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering & Risk
στηρίζω (stērizō)
“to establish, confirm, make firm"
"establish” (ESV/KJV), “strengthen” (NIV)3:2,13: Timothy sent to establish the believers’ faith; God asked to establish their hearts blameless.स्थिर पार्नु. Low risk.
θλῖψις (thlipsis)
“affliction, pressure, tribulation"
"affliction” (ESV/KJV), “trials” (NIV)3:3-4,7: persecution the church was destined to face; links forward to ch. 5’s Day-of-the-Lord tribulation theme.कष्ट / सताइ. Low-Medium risk; must convey real, external persecution consistent with Nepal’s historical experience of legal restriction on Christian practice (cf. baseline’s christian_fellowship note), not merely inner distress.
ὁ πειράζων (ho peirazōn)
“the tempter,” a participial title for Satan
”the tempter” (ESV/NIV), “the tempter” (KJV)3:5: Paul’s fear that “the tempter” had tempted them, undoing the church’s labor.परीक्षा गर्ने (functioning as a title for शैतान). Low-Medium risk; reuse Satan entry.
ἁγιωσύνη (hagiōsynē)
“holiness” as a state/quality (distinct noun-form from ἁγιασμός, “the process of sanctification”)
“holiness” (all versions)3:13: “blameless in holiness” at Christ’s coming — the settled state sanctification is producing.पवित्रता (pavitrata). Medium risk; distinct from baseline पवित्रीकरण (sanctification-as-process). Both trace to the established पवित्र root; care needed not to use them interchangeably where the state/process distinction is pastorally significant (see Chapter 4 and 5:23 below).
ἀμέμπτους (amemptous)
“blameless, without fault"
"blameless” (all versions)Paired with ἁγιωσύνη — the goal of sanctification realized at the parousia.निर्दोष. Low risk.

Chapter 4 (vv.1–12) — Sanctification and Brotherly Love

(4:13-18 treated in full above as the core passage.) Reuses baseline sanctification (पवित्रीकरण, 4:3-4,7), holy_spirit (4:8), gentiles (अन्यजाति, 4:5), calling/called (4:7). New terms:

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering & Risk
πορνεία (porneia)
“sexual immorality"
"sexual immorality” (ESV/NIV), “fornication” (KJV)4:3: sanctification specifically requires abstaining from this.व्यभिचार / अनैतिकता. Low-Medium risk; standard established term.
σκεῦος (skeuos)
Literally “vessel, container, instrument”; in 4:4, most likely a euphemism for one’s own body (less likely, one’s wife)
“his own body” (ESV/NIV, body-reading), “his vessel” (KJV, literal)4:4: “each one know how to control his own [body/vessel] in holiness and honor.”आफ्नो शरीर (aafno sharir). Medium risk; translator note required flagging the body/wife textual ambiguity — this document recommends the “body” reading (majority modern rendering) but the alternative should be recorded in the segment cache per the Ambiguity Handling protocol.
ἐπιθυμία (epithymia)
“desire, passion, lust” (negative sense here)
“lustful passion” (ESV), “concupiscence” (KJV), “passionate lust” (NIV)4:5: contrasted with holy self-control; the mark of Gentiles “who do not know God.”वासना / अनियन्त्रित इच्छा. Low-Medium risk.
φιλαδελφία (philadelphia)
“brotherly love, love of the brethren"
"brotherly love” (ESV/KJV/NIV)4:9: a love the Thessalonians are “taught by God” to have — distinct from general kindness.भाइचारा प्रेम (bhaichara prem). Low-Medium risk; see also ἀγάπη below.
ἀγάπη (agapē)
“love” — the distinctively NT term for self-giving, God-originated love
”love” (all versions)Underlies φιλαδελφία and pervades chs. 1, 3, 4, 5 (e.g., 1:3; 3:6,12; 4:9; 5:8,13).प्रेम (prem). High risk. New glossary entry. प्रेम is the broad standard Nepali word spanning romantic, filial, and bhakti-devotional love toward a chosen deity. In 1 Thessalonians, ἀγάπη must be understood as love that originates in God’s own character and is given, not achieved — parallel to the baseline’s grace/merit distinction — not primarily a cultivated devotional feeling generated through religious practice toward a deity.
ἡσυχάζειν / ἐργάζεσθαι ταῖς ἰδίαις χερσίν
”to live quietly” / “to work with one’s own hands"
"live quietly…work with your hands” (ESV)4:11: practical, ordinary-life holiness — not withdrawal into ascetic or monastic seclusion.शान्त जीवन बिताउनु / आफ्नै हातले काम गर्नु. Low-Medium risk; reinforces baseline’s separation_unto_gods_service doctrine note that biblical set-apartness is lived out in ordinary life, not through renunciate withdrawal (cf. baseline’s sadhu/gompa caution).

Chapter 5 — The Day of the Lord, Watchfulness, Closing Exhortations

Reuses baseline salvation (उद्धार, 5:8-9), peace (शान्ति, 5:3,23), faith (5:8), holy_spirit (5:19), prophecy (अगमवाणी, 5:20), calling/called (5:24), exhort (उत्साहित पार्नु, 5:11,14), grace (अनुग्रह, 5:28). New terms — the doctrinal core of “The Day of the Lord”:

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningNepali Rendering & Risk
ἡμέρα κυρίου (hēmera kyriou)
“day of the Lord"
"day of the Lord” (all versions)5:2: comes “like a thief in the night” — sudden, sovereign, unschedulable divine judgment/deliverance.प्रभुको दिन (Prabhuko din). High risk. Must not be read through the lens of Nepali astrological practice (jyotiṣa), in which “auspicious” and “inauspicious” days are calculated from planetary position; this is a sovereign day fixed by God alone, unrelated to astrological calculation, and it is both judgment (for unbelief) and deliverance (for believers) simultaneously.
κλέπτης ἐν νυκτί (kleptēs en nykti)
“a thief in the night"
"thief in the night” (all versions)Metaphor for suddenness and unpredictability, not stealth or moral menace per se.रातको चोरझैं. Low risk; standard metaphor, transfers naturally.
υἱοὶ φωτός / σκότος (huioi phōtos / skotos)
“sons of light” / “darkness"
"children of light” (ESV/NIV), “children of light” (KJV)5:5: believers’ moral-eschatological identity contrasted with unbelieving “darkness” — ethical readiness, not metaphysical dualism.ज्योतिका सन्तान / अन्धकार. Medium risk; distinct context from the baseline’s glory caution (which concerns God’s own radiant presence), but still requires care that this ethical light/darkness contrast is not read through Kathmandu Valley tantric divine-radiance associations.
νήφωμεν (nēphōmen), from νήφω
”let us be sober, self-controlled, clear-headed"
"be sober” (ESV/KJV), “be alert and self-controlled” (NIV)5:6,8: spiritual alertness in view of Christ’s sudden return.होसमा रहौं. Medium risk; distinguish from Buddhist mindfulness (sati) practice aimed at inner tranquility/insight through self-effort — biblical sobriety here is outward-oriented expectant readiness for a personal Lord’s return, not an introspective attainment.
θώραξ πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης / περικεφαλαία ἐλπίδος σωτηρίας
”breastplate of faith and love” / “helmet of the hope of salvation"
"breastplate…helmet” (all versions)5:8: armor imagery combining faith, love, hope, and salvation into one image of readiness.विश्वास र प्रेमको छाती-पाता / उद्धारको आशाको टोप. Low-Medium risk; reuses established faith/salvation baseline terms plus the new hope/love entries.
ὄλεθρος (olethros)
“destruction, ruin"
"destruction” (all versions)5:3: sudden destruction falls on those saying “peace and safety.”विनाश. Low risk.
ὠδίν (ōdin)
“birth pang, labor pain"
"labor pains” (ESV/NIV), “travail” (KJV)5:3: the suddenness and inescapability of the Day of the Lord, likened to labor onset.प्रसव-वेदना. Low risk; standard metaphor.
σβέννυτε (sbennyte), from σβέννυμι
”quench, extinguish"
"quench” (ESV/KJV), “do not put out” (NIV)5:19: “Do not quench the Spirit” — resisting/suppressing the Spirit’s ongoing work.आत्मालाई निभाउनु. Medium risk; a translator note may be useful clarifying this is metaphorical (about resisting/suppressing the Spirit’s activity), not a statement about ritual sacred fire (relevant given the centrality of fire in Hindu havan/yajña ritual).
δοκιμάζετε (dokimazete), from δοκιμάζω
”test, examine, discern"
"test” (ESV/NIV), “prove” (KJV)5:21: “test everything; hold fast what is good” — discernment applied to prophetic utterance.जाँच गर्नु. Low risk; reuse alongside baseline prophecy term.
ἁγιάσαι ὑμᾶς ὁλοτελεῖς (hagiasai hymas holoteleis)
“sanctify you wholly/completely"
"sanctify you completely” (ESV/NIV), “sanctify you wholly” (KJV)5:23: the capstone sanctification prayer — verb form of baseline sanctification, intensified with “wholly.”तपाईंहरूलाई पूर्ण रूपमा पवित्र पार्नुहोस् — reuse baseline पवित्रीकरण root. High risk per baseline; ensure “wholly/completely” (ओलोटेलीस) is not lost in translation, since it is the theological climax of the letter’s sanctification teaching.
πνεῦμα, ψυχή, σῶμα (pneuma, psychē, sōma)
“spirit, soul, body"
"spirit and soul and body” (ESV/KJV/NIV)5:23: the whole person, in every dimension, is the object of God’s sanctifying and preserving work until the parousia.आत्मा, प्राण, र शरीर. Medium risk; must not be read through Hindu/Buddhist tripartite anthropologies (e.g., distinctions between ātman, jīva, and physical body tied to rebirth theory) — this is a wholeness formula, not a metaphysical map of transmigration.
πιστὸς ὁ καλῶν (pistos ho kalōn)
“faithful is the one who calls"
"he who calls you is faithful” (ESV), “faithful is he that calleth you” (KJV)5:24: grounds assurance of final sanctification in God’s own faithfulness to his calling — reuse of baseline called/calling and providence doctrines.तपाईंहरूलाई बोलाउनुहुने विश्वासयोग्य हुनुहुन्छ. High risk per baseline calling entries; no new risk.
ἅγιον φίλημα (hagion philēma)
“holy kiss"
"holy kiss” (ESV/KJV/NIV)5:26: a customary greeting of Christian familial affection in the early church.पवित्र अभिवादन / पवित्र म्वाइँ. Low-Medium risk; cultural note recommended — public physical greeting norms differ in Nepal, so teaching material may explain this as an equivalent of today’s warm handshake or embrace among Nepali believers, preserving the “holy” (set-apart, family-of-God) sense rather than the literal physical form.
