Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — 1 Timothy (English → Nepali)
Methodology
This analysis proceeds in two parts, per PRD Phase 1 Step 1:
- Part A treats the core passage, 1 Timothy 3:1–13, verse by verse, plus 3:14–16 (the remainder of the core-passage chapter, treated at the same depth because it contains the “pillar and buttress of truth” declaration and the Christ-hymn, both load-bearing for this curriculum).
- Part B treats every other chapter of 1 Timothy (1, 2, 4, 5, 6) at chapter level, covering every load-bearing theological term not already covered in Part A.
Every term already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json is reused exactly as recorded there; such terms are marked “[BASELINE REUSE]” and are not re-argued. New terms required for 1 Timothy are analyzed in full (original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, destination-language rendering and risk) and are candidates for addition to translation memory in Step 8/9.
Risk tiers (Critical / High / Medium / Low) follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions exactly.
PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 1 Timothy 3:1–16
1 Timothy 3:1
“The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πιστὸς ὁ λόγος | pistos ho logos | ”faithful/trustworthy is the word/saying” | A recurring 1 Timothy formula (1:15; 3:1; 4:9) marking a statement as reliable apostolic teaching | ”trustworthy saying,” “faithful is the saying,” “this is a true saying” | Marks the following statement as part of the guarded apostolic deposit, not opinion | विश्वासयोग्य वचन (vishwasyogya vachan). Reuses विश्वास root [BASELINE]. Risk: Medium. Must consistently mark this formula across all four occurrences so learners recognize it as a technical marker, tying to “Guarding the Deposit of Faith.” |
| ἐπισκοπή | episkopē | ”overseeing,” “office of oversight” | Abstract noun from ἐπίσκοπος; the function/office, not the person | ”office of a bishop,” “office of overseer,” “oversight” | The recognized, functional office of church oversight instituted for the church’s good order | अध्यक्षको पद (adhyakshako pad). Risk: Critical. See ἐπίσκοπος at 3:2 below; the office-term must not import Hindu priestly (पुरोहित) or Buddhist monastic-hierarchy (लामा) associations. |
| ὀρέγομαι | oregomai | ”to stretch out toward,” “to reach for” | Desire/aspiration, used positively here (contrast 6:10 same root used negatively of greed) | “aspires to,” “desires,” “sets his heart on” | A legitimate aspiration to serve, not self-promotion | इच्छा गर्नु (ichchha garnu). Risk: Low. |
| καλὸν ἔργον | kalon ergon | ”good/noble work” | καλός = intrinsically excellent/noble (distinct from merely ἀγαθός, “beneficial”); ἔργον = work/task | ”noble task,” “good work,” “honorable work” | Church oversight is honorable service, not worldly status | असल काम (asal kaam). Risk: Low. |
1 Timothy 3:2
“Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,“
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐπίσκοπος | episkopos | ”one who watches over,” overseer | Church office roughly synonymous with πρεσβύτερος in the Pastorals (cf. Titus 1:5-7); NOT a hierarchical bishop over multiple elders in the modern Anglican/Catholic sense in this text | ”bishop,” “overseer” | The functional leader responsible for guarding sound doctrine and shepherding the flock | अध्यक्ष (adhyaksha, “president/overseer” — a secular administrative term). Risk: Critical. Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership. Never पुरोहित (Hindu Brahmin priest, caste-linked ritual office), never लामा (Tibetan Buddhist master), never गुरु (guru — implies a devotional master-disciple bond foreign to this functional, accountable office). अध्यक्ष is deliberately a neutral, non-sacral administrative term, consistent with the register the baseline already uses for व्यवस्था/मण्डली-type institutional vocabulary. |
| ἀνεπίλημπτος | anepilēmptos | ”not able to be taken hold of,” i.e. irreproachable | Legal/forensic metaphor: no valid accusation can be laid hold of | ”above reproach,” “blameless,” “irreproachable” | Public, verifiable moral integrity, not sinless perfection | निष्कलंक (nishkalank, “unblemished”). Risk: Medium. |
| μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα | mias gynaikos andra | ”a one-woman man,” husband of one wife | Marital exclusivity/fidelity; disputed whether it excludes polygamy only, or also divorce/remarriage | ”husband of one wife,” “faithful to his wife,” “a one-woman man” | Sexual and marital fidelity as a visible qualification for leadership | एक पत्नीको पति (ek patniko pati). Risk: High. Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership. Requires theologian review of scope (polygamy vs. remarriage) and cultural note: historically some Nepali communities practiced polygamy; the qualification must be taught as a positive fidelity standard, not a caste- or ethnicity-targeted judgment. |
| νηφάλιος | nēphalios | ”wineless,” sober | Literal sobriety extended metaphorically to mental clarity/watchfulness | ”sober-minded,” “temperate,” “clear-headed” | Watchful, undistracted judgment fit for spiritual oversight | सचेत / होसमा रहने (sachet / hosma rahne). Risk: Medium. |
| σώφρων | sōphrōn | ”of sound mind,” self-controlled | Restraint of impulse/passion through a Spirit-formed, sound mind (root shared with σωφροσύνη, 2:9,15) | “self-controlled,” “sensible,” “disciplined” | Inner, Spirit-enabled self-mastery, not ascetic self-mortification | संयमी (sanyami). Risk: High. See σωφροσύνη in Chapter 2 below for the collision risk with ascetic-restraint traditions. |
| κόσμιος | kosmios | ”orderly, well-arranged” | Outward decorum/respectability flowing from inner order | ”respectable,” “well-behaved,” “orderly” | Consistent, orderly conduct that commends the gospel publicly | मर्यादित (maryadit). Risk: Medium. |
| φιλόξενος | philoxenos | ”lover of strangers,” hospitable | Active welcome of outsiders/travelers into one’s home | ”hospitable,” “given to hospitality” | Practical, sacrificial welcome, modeling the gospel’s welcome to all | अतिथि-प्रेमी (atithi-premi). Risk: Medium. Positive cultural resonance with Nepali guest-honor norms is possible, but the term must be taught as active, costly welcome to the outsider (cf. Gentile inclusion doctrine), not mere social courtesy. |
| διδακτικός | didaktikos | ”skilled/apt at teaching” | Capacity and willingness to teach sound doctrine, contrasted with false teachers’ disqualifying traits | ”able to teach,” “apt to teach” | Doctrinal competence is a non-negotiable qualification for oversight | सिकाउन सक्ने (sikaunu sakne). Risk: High. Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching — directly ties leadership qualification to doctrinal guarding. |
1 Timothy 3:3
“not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πάροινος | paroinos | ”beside/given to wine” | Habitual over-indulgence in alcohol | ”drunkard,” “given to wine” | Disqualifying loss of self-mastery | मद्यपी (madyapi). Risk: Medium. Note cultural sensitivity below (3:8, οἴνῳ πολλῷ). |
| πλήκτης | plēktēs | ”a striker” | Physical violence/aggression | ”violent,” “a bully,” “a striker” | Incompatible with pastoral gentleness | हिंसक (hinsak). Risk: Medium. |
| ἐπιεικής | epieikēs | ”yielding, reasonable, gentle” | Forbearing gentleness that does not insist on its own rights | ”gentle,” “forbearing,” “considerate” | Christlike gentleness as a leadership virtue | नम्र (namra). Risk: Low. |
| ἄμαχος | amachos | ”not a fighter,” peaceable | Non-contentiousness in relationships/disputes | ”not quarrelsome,” “peaceable,” “not contentious” | Relational peaceableness, a character trait — distinct from the soteriological “peace with God” (शान्ति) already fixed in baseline | नझगडिने (najhagadine). Risk: Medium. Deliberately not रendered शान्ति, to avoid collapsing a character trait into the baseline’s reserved soteriological term. |
| ἀφιλάργυρος | aphilargyros | ”not a lover of silver,” not greedy | Freedom from love of money (negated form of φιλαργυρία, 6:10) | “not a lover of money,” “not greedy for money” | Financial integrity as a leadership qualification, echoing the book’s larger Godliness-and-Contentment theme | धनको लोभ नगर्ने (dhanko lobh nagarne). Risk: High. Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment. |
1 Timothy 3:4–5
“He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church?”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| προΐστημι | proistēmi | ”to stand before,” to lead/manage | Household or church leadership/oversight (recurs 3:5, 3:12, 5:17) | “manage,” “lead,” “rule,” “be at the head of” | Household management functions as the visible, testable analogy for church leadership competence | अगुवाई गर्नु / व्यवस्थापन गर्नु (aguwai garnu / vyavasthapan garnu). Risk: High. Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership. |
| οἶκος | oikos | ”house,” household | Physical household; extends metaphorically to the church as God’s household (3:15) | “household,” “house,” “family” | Household order is the training ground and analogy for church order | घर / घरपरिवार (ghar / gharpariwar). Risk: Medium. Anticipates the extension to परमेश्वरको घर (“house of God,” 3:15). |
| ὑποταγή | hypotagē | ”a placing under,” submission | Ordered, willing responsiveness within a relationship of accountability | ”submission,” “obedience,” “being under control” | Not coerced subjugation but ordered household relationship reflecting healthy authority | अधीनता (adhinata). Risk: High. Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership / Public Worship (household order). Must be carefully taught as willing, loving responsiveness, not exploited to reinforce existing rigid patriarchal or caste-based household hierarchies in Nepali society. |
| σεμνότης | semnotēs | ”dignity, seriousness, reverence” | Weighty, honorable seriousness of demeanor | ”dignity,” “respectfulness,” “seriousness” | The tenor that should mark a leader’s household governance | गम्भीरता (gambhirata). Risk: Medium. |
| ἐκκλησία θεοῦ | ekklēsia theou | ”assembly/called-out ones of God” | The local congregation as God’s own possession, not a human club | ”God’s church,” “the church of God” | The overseer’s household competence is tested precisely because he will care for what belongs to God, not to himself | परमेश्वरको मण्डली (Parameshwarko Mandali). Reuses मण्डली [BASELINE]. Risk: Critical. Doctrine: The Church as Pillar of Truth / Qualifications for Church Leadership. |
| ἐπιμελέομαι | epimeleomai | ”to take care of, attend to” | Active, hands-on pastoral care | ”care for,” “take care of,” “look after” | Pastoral care as diligent stewardship, not distant administration | हेरचाह गर्नु (herchah garnu). Risk: Medium. |
1 Timothy 3:6–7
“He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| νεόφυτος | neophytos | ”newly planted” | A very recent convert, spiritually immature by tenure | ”recent convert,” “novice,” “new believer” | Spiritual maturity, not mere enthusiasm, is required for oversight | नयाँ विश्वासी (naya vishwasi). Risk: Medium. |
| τυφόομαι | typhoomai | ”to be enveloped in smoke,” to be conceited | Pride that clouds spiritual judgment | ”puffed up with conceit,” “blinded by pride” | Premature elevation breeds spiritual danger, not honor | घमण्डी हुनु (ghamandi hunu). Risk: Medium. |
| διάβολος | diabolos | ”slanderer, accuser” | Both the proper title of Satan (used interchangeably with Σατανᾶς in this book, e.g. 5:15) and, at 3:11, a common adjective (“slanderers”) | “the devil,” “the accuser,” “slanderer” | A real, personal spiritual adversary who exploits pride and public disgrace to destroy leaders | शैतान (Shaitan). Risk: Critical. Must be taught as the one personal adversary of God and his people — not one of many asuras/rakshasas of Hindu cosmology, and not Mara (the Buddhist tempter-deity of Nepali Newar and Himalayan Buddhist tradition), nor an impersonal principle of illusion (māyā). This distinction is essential and parallels the baseline’s concern for “power of God” (Shakta) and “salvation” (moksha/nirvana) collisions. |
| μαρτυρία καλή | martyria kalē | ”a good witness/testimony” | Public reputation and credibility before non-believers | ”good testimony,” “well thought of,” “good reputation” | The leader’s credibility with outsiders protects the gospel’s reputation | असल गवाही / राम्रो नाम (asal gawahi / ramro naam). Risk: Medium-High. Nepal’s strong honor-shame social dynamics make this qualification especially weighty and easily over- or under-emphasized; native-speaker review recommended. |
| ὀνειδισμός | oneidismos | ”reproach, disgrace” | Public shame/disgrace | ”disgrace,” “reproach” | The relational, social cost of moral failure in leadership | अपमान (apamaan). Risk: Medium. |
| παγίς τοῦ διαβόλου | pagis tou diabolou | ”a snare of the devil” | A trap deliberately set by the adversary | ”snare of the devil,” “the devil’s trap” | Public disgrace is not incidental but a spiritual attack | शैतानको पासो (Shaitanko paaso). Risk: High. (Compound of शैतान, Critical, + पासो, Low.) |
1 Timothy 3:8
“Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain,“
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| διάκονος | diakonos | ”servant, one who serves (esp. at table)“ | Here a recognized, tested church office of practical service (distinct from the general verb διακονέω, “to serve,” used of any believer) | “deacon,” “servant” | A distinct, accountable office of practical service alongside the overseer’s office | सेवक (sevak). Risk: Critical. Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership. Important collision note: सेवक is also the ordinary Nepali Hindu devotional term for a deity’s or guru’s devotee-servant (e.g. भगवानको सेवक). The office title must always be taught with the functional, congregationally-tested, term-limited sense of 1 Timothy 3, not the devotee-servant sense of a guru-bhakta relationship. Requires theologian review at first introduction of the office. |
| σεμνός | semnos | ”dignified, worthy of respect” | Same root as σεμνότης (3:4) | “dignified,” “worthy of respect” | Gravity befitting the office, not mere formality | गम्भीर (gambhir). Risk: Medium. |
| δίλογος | dilogos | ”double-worded,” saying one thing to one person, another to another | Insincerity/inconsistency in speech | ”double-tongued,” “insincere,” “two-faced” | Trustworthy, consistent speech required for those who handle church resources and communication | दोहोरो कुरा गर्ने (dohoro kura garne). Risk: Medium. |
| οἴνῳ πολλῷ προσέχοντας | oinō pollō prosechontas | ”given/addicted to much wine” | Habitual over-indulgence (parallel to πάροινος, 3:3) | “addicted to much wine,” “given to much wine” | Sober self-control as a qualification for handling church affairs | धेरै रक्सीको लत लागेको (dherai raksiko lat lageko). Risk: Medium-High. Several Nepali ethnic communities (e.g., Newar, Gurung, Rai, Limbu, Tamang) incorporate alcohol (rakshi/chhyang) into customary religious and social rites; the qualification must be taught carefully as addressing habitual excess/addiction, not blanket condemnation of ethnic custom — native-speaker cultural review recommended. |
| αἰσχροκερδής | aischrokerdēs | ”shamefully greedy for gain” | Greed specifically for gain gotten through shameful/dishonest means | ”greedy for dishonest gain,” “fond of sordid gain” | Financial integrity in handling church resources — echoes the letter’s larger warning against treating “godliness as a means of gain” (6:5) | अनुचित लाभको लोभ गर्ने (anuchit labhko lobh garne). Risk: High. Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment. |
1 Timothy 3:9
“They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως | mystērion tēs pisteōs | ”mystery of the faith” | A truth once hidden, now fully disclosed in the gospel to all who believe (cf. 3:16) | “mystery of the faith,” “the secret truth of the faith” | The content of apostolic faith, openly revealed, not an esoteric secret reserved for initiates | विश्वासको रहस्य (vishwasko rahasya). Reuses विश्वास [BASELINE] + रहस्य (new). Risk: Critical. This is a direct collision point: रहस्य is the very word used for esoteric Tantric secret knowledge/rites in Kathmandu Valley Newar Hindu and Vajrayana Buddhist tradition — the same Tantric/Shakta stream the baseline already flags for “power of God” (शक्ति forbidden). Every use of रहस्य for Christian μυστήριον must be immediately qualified in context as truth openly revealed to all believers, the opposite of an initiate-only secret. Human theologian review required for every occurrence in this curriculum. |
| καθαρὰ συνείδησις | kathara syneidēsis | ”a clean/clear conscience” | Moral integrity between one’s inner conviction and outward conduct | ”clear conscience,” “pure conscience” | Doctrinal fidelity must be matched by moral integrity, not mere correct belief | स्वच्छ विवेक (swachchha vivek). Risk: Medium-High. स्वच्छ (rather than शुद्ध, already reserved against for “holy” due to ritual-purity associations) is chosen deliberately to keep this moral/relational, not ceremonial. See συνείδησις, Chapter 1, for वivek’s own note. |
1 Timothy 3:10
“And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove blameless.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοκιμάζω | dokimazō | ”to test, examine, prove by testing” | Vetting process prior to appointment to office | ”let them be tested,” “let them be examined,” “let them prove themselves” | Church office is entered through tested, observable character, not self-appointment or hereditary/caste status | जाँच गर्नु (jaanch garnu). Risk: Medium. |
| ἀνέγκλητος | anegklētos | ”not able to be called in,” unaccused, blameless | Absence of valid accusation, near-synonym of ἀνεπίλημπτος (3:2) | “blameless,” “beyond reproach” | The tested outcome required before appointment | दोषरहित (dosharahit). Risk: Medium. |
1 Timothy 3:11
“Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, sober-minded, faithful in all things.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γυναῖκας | gynaikas | ”women” (accusative plural of γυνή) | Genuinely ambiguous: (a) “their wives” [of the deacons just described], or (b) “women [deacons/deaconesses],” a distinct female office (cf. Phoebe as διάκονος, Romans 16:1) | “their wives,” “the women,” “women deacons,” “deaconesses” | A doctrinally consequential interpretive fork touching both Qualifications for Church Leadership and the role of women in public ministry | पत्नीहरू (patniharu, “wives”) or महिला सेवकहरू (mahila sevakharu, “women servants/deaconesses”). Risk: Critical. This is a genuinely disputed rendering, not a simple lexical choice — the two options carry materially different ecclesiological implications. Flag for mandatory human theologian review before Phase 2 translation of this verse; do not default silently to either option. |
| διάβολος (adjectival) | diabolos | ”slanderous” (here a common adjective, not the title “the Devil”) | Malicious speech about others — the same root used for Satan the Slanderer (3:6-7) | “slanderers,” “malicious gossips” | A striking lexical echo: gossip/slander is devil-like speech | निन्दा गर्ने (ninda garne). Risk: Medium-High. Where possible, preserve the root-echo with शैतान (3:6-7) in teaching notes, without using शैतान itself as the rendering here (that would overstate the sense). |
| νηφάλιος | nēphalios | ”sober-minded” | Same as 3:2, 3:11 | ”sober-minded,” “temperate” | Character parallel to the male qualifications, underscoring shared standards | सचेत [see 3:2]. Risk: Medium. |
| πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν | pistas en pasin | ”faithful/trustworthy in all things” | General reliability and trustworthiness | ”faithful in all things,” “trustworthy in everything” | Comprehensive, not partial, trustworthiness | सबै कुरामा विश्वासनीय (sabai kurama vishwasniya). Reuses विश्वास root [BASELINE]. Risk: Medium. |
1 Timothy 3:12
“Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.”
Reuses μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα, προΐστημι, οἶκος, τέκνον from 3:2/3:4 analysis above; no new terms. τέκνον (“child/children”) itself is low-risk: सन्तान / छोराछोरी (santan / chhora-chhori). Risk: Low.
1 Timothy 3:13
“For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves, and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| βαθμὸν καλόν | bathmon kalon | ”a good step/rank/standing” | Recognized standing/reputation gained through faithful service | ”good standing,” “good reputation,” “high standing” | Faithful service yields spiritual, not merely social, standing | राम्रो प्रतिष्ठा (ramro pratistha). Risk: Medium. |
| παρρησία | parrēsia | ”freedom of speech,” boldness | Confident, unashamed access and speech, both before God and before people | ”great confidence,” “boldness,” “freedom of speech” | Faithful service produces confident assurance in gospel proclamation and in approaching God | साहस (sahas). Risk: High. Given Nepal’s current legal restrictions on proselytizing (Muluki Criminal Code 2017) already flagged in the baseline for “evangelism” and “mission,” the boldness this verse promises has direct, present-day pastoral and legal weight for Nepali deacons and elders; note for native-speaker and theologian review together. |
| πίστις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ | pistis en Christō Iēsou | ”faith in Christ Jesus” | The specific, exclusive object of saving trust | ”faith in Christ Jesus,” “faith which is in Christ Jesus” | Reaffirms that all qualifications and service are grounded in, and flow from, union with Christ, not achievement | ख्रीष्ट येशूमा विश्वास. Reuses विश्वास, येशू [BASELINE]; ख्रीष्ट reused from established Christian usage (see baseline system prompt). Risk: Critical. |
1 Timothy 3:14–16 (completion of Chapter 3)
“I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.”
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| οἶκος θεοῦ | oikos theou | ”house of God” | The church as God’s own household/family, not a building | ”household of God,” “house of God,” “family of God” | Ecclesiology: believers belong to God’s own family, corrective to caste- or clan-based household identity | परमेश्वरको घर (Parameshwarko ghar). Risk: High. Doctrine: The Church as Pillar of Truth. |
| ἐκκλησία θεοῦ ζῶντος | ekklēsia theou zōntos | ”church of the living God” | The assembly belonging to the one true, living God, as opposed to lifeless idols | ”church of the living God” | Sharpens the contrast between the true God and any lifeless or impersonal object of devotion | जीवित परमेश्वरको मण्डली. Reuses मण्डली, परमेश्वर [BASELINE]. Risk: Critical. The phrase “living God” (ζῶντος) is worth flagging on its own: it directly contrasts the one true, personal God with lifeless idols and with impersonal ultimate-reality concepts (cf. baseline’s ब्रह्म caution for the Holy Spirit). |
| στῦλος | stylos | ”pillar, column” | Architectural support metaphor for the church’s role in upholding truth | ”pillar,” “column,” “support” | The church visibly upholds and displays revealed truth before the world | खम्बा (khamba). Risk: High. Doctrine: The Church as Pillar of Truth. Note: Nepal’s Hindu temple architecture (e.g., Pashupatinath, Changu Narayan) makes “pillar” imagery culturally vivid; ensure the teaching context makes clear this is the church’s function of supporting revealed truth, not a physical temple structure. |
| ἑδραίωμα | hedraiōma | ”foundation, buttress, bulwark” | A support/stay that keeps something firmly fixed | ”buttress,” “foundation,” “bulwark,” “support” | The church’s stabilizing, load-bearing role for the truth of the gospel in the world | जग / आधार (jag / aadhar). Risk: High. |
| ἀλήθεια | alētheia | ”truth” | Reality as disclosed by God, centered on the gospel of Christ | ”the truth,” “truth” | The truth the church exists to uphold is the apostolic gospel, not one truth-claim among many | सत्य (satya). Risk: Medium. Note: सत्य is also a significant term in Hindu philosophical and Gandhian ethical vocabulary (Satyagraha); context must make clear this is the specific, revealed truth of the gospel of Christ, not a general philosophical or ethical ideal of truthfulness. |
| μυστήριον τῆς εὐσεβείας | mystērion tēs eusebeias | ”mystery of godliness” | The revealed truth that grounds true godliness — the incarnate, crucified, risen, exalted Christ | ”mystery of godliness,” “secret of our godliness” | Ties the doctrine of the incarnation directly to the doctrine of godliness: godliness is grounded in a historical, Christological fact, not an ascetic technique | भक्तिको रहस्य (bhaktiko rahasya). Risk: Critical. Compounds the two highest-collision terms in the book (रहस्य and भक्ति — see εὐσέβεια, Chapter 2, and μυστήριον, 3:9); mandatory theologian review at every occurrence, with explicit teaching that this “mystery” is the historical gospel event now openly proclaimed, not an esoteric attainment. |
| ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί | ephanerōthē en sarki | ”was manifested in flesh” | Public, historical disclosure of the eternal Son in a genuine human body | ”manifested in the flesh,” “appeared in a body,” “revealed in flesh” | Affirms the incarnation and full humanity of Christ | शरीरमा प्रकट हुनुभयो, understood as the concrete historical event named by देहधारण [BASELINE, Incarnation]. Risk: Critical. Must not echo अवतार-style repeatable divine descent; this is the one-time देहधारण already fixed in the baseline. |
| ἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματι | edikaiōthē en pneumati | ”was vindicated/justified in [the] Spirit” | Christ’s vindication/declared-righteous status, demonstrated through the Spirit (e.g., at the resurrection) | “vindicated by the Spirit,” “justified in the Spirit” | Christ’s own vindication parallels and grounds the believer’s justification | Reuses धर्मी ठहराइने कार्य root [BASELINE, Justification] applied Christologically; पवित्र आत्मा [BASELINE]. Risk: Critical. |
| ὤφθη ἀγγέλοις | ōphthē angelois | ”was seen by angels” | Angelic witness to Christ’s person and work | ”seen by angels,” “seen of angels” | Cosmic, not merely earthly, significance of Christ’s incarnation and exaltation | स्वर्गदूतहरूद्वारा देखिनुभयो; ἄγγελος = स्वर्गदूत (swargadoot, “heavenly messenger” — established Nepali Christian term). Risk: Medium. |
| ἐκηρύχθη ἐν ἔθνεσιν | ekērychthē en ethnesin | ”was proclaimed among the nations/Gentiles” | The universal, cross-cultural scope of gospel proclamation | ”proclaimed among the nations,” “preached among the Gentiles” | Ties directly to Mission to the Nations and Gentile-inclusion doctrine | Reuses अन्यजाति, सुसमाचार प्रचार [BASELINE]. Risk: High, given the same live legal-risk note the baseline records for evangelism in Nepal. |
| ἐπιστεύθη ἐν κόσμῳ | episteuthē en kosmō | ”was believed on in the world” | Global, historical reception of the gospel by faith | ”believed on in the world,” “believed in throughout the world” | The gospel’s worldwide reception by faith, not by force or state decree | Reuses विश्वास [BASELINE]. Risk: Medium. |
| ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ | anelēmphthē en doxē | ”was taken up in glory” | Christ’s ascension into heavenly glory | ”taken up in glory,” “received up in glory,” “ascended in glory” | The Ascension, completing the Christ-hymn’s historical arc (incarnation → vindication → proclamation → reception → exaltation) | महिमामा उचालिनुभयो, i.e. स्वर्गारोहण (swargarohan, “ascension” — established Nepali Christian term); महिमा reused [BASELINE]. Risk: High. Avoid light-radiance phrasing that could echo Kathmandu Valley living-goddess/Tantric divine-radiance imagery (same caution the baseline records for महिमा generally). |
PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (1:1–20): Salutation, the Charge Against False Teachers, Paul’s Testimony of Grace
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀπόστολος | apostolos | ”one sent” | Reused [BASELINE] | “apostle” | Paul’s delegated, Christ-commissioned authority undergirds the entire letter’s charge to Timothy | प्रेरित [BASELINE]. Risk: Medium. |
| ἐπιταγή | epitagē | ”a command, order” | Authoritative divine command, not human suggestion | ”by the command of,” “by commandment of” | Paul’s apostleship rests on God’s own command, grounding the authority behind the letter’s instructions | आज्ञाद्वारा (agyadwara, “by command”). Risk: Medium. |
| σωτήρ | sōtēr | ”savior, deliverer” | God (1:1) and Christ (as consistently in this letter) as the one who rescues | ”Savior” | God/Christ as the personal Deliverer, root of उद्धार [BASELINE, Salvation] | उद्धारकर्ता (Uddharkarta). Risk: Critical. Must never be rendered with a root implying मुक्ति/मोक्ष/निर्वाण-style liberation (per baseline’s dual-front caution on उद्धार); उद्धारकर्ता keeps the personal-agent form of the already-approved उद्धार root. |
| ἐλπίς | elpis | ”hope” | Confident expectation grounded in God’s promise, not wishful thinking | ”hope,” “our hope" | "Christ Jesus our hope” (1:1) — Christ himself, not an abstract ideal, is the believer’s hope | आशा (aasha). Risk: Medium. Context must make clear this is confident hope grounded in a person (Christ), not karma-driven optimism about future rebirth or fortune. |
| διδασκαλία | didaskalia | ”teaching, doctrine” | The body of apostolic teaching to be preserved and taught; qualified as ὑγιαίνουσα (“sound/healthy,” 1:10) | “doctrine,” “teaching,” “sound doctrine” | The stable core of apostolic instruction against which all teaching in the church must be measured | सिद्धान्त (siddhanta, “doctrine/teaching”); “sound doctrine” = खरो सिद्धान्त (kharo siddhanta). Risk: High. Doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching. |
| ἑτεροδιδασκαλέω | heterodidaskaleō | ”to teach otherwise/differently” | Teaching that diverges from the apostolic deposit | ”teach a different doctrine,” “teach otherwise,” “teach false doctrine” | The letter’s opening warning (1:3) names the central problem the whole book addresses | भिन्नै सिद्धान्त सिकाउनु (bhinnai siddhanta sikaunu). Risk: High. |
| μῦθος καὶ γενεαλογία ἀπέραντος | mythos kai genealogia aperantos | ”myths and endless genealogies” | Speculative, unverifiable religious narratives and lineage-disputes that distract from the gospel | ”myths and endless genealogies,” “fables and endless genealogies” | Names a specific problem of speculative teaching diverting from sound doctrine — not a blanket dismissal of narrative or ancestral tradition generally | काल्पनिक कथा र अन्तहीन वंशावली (kalpanik katha ra antahin vamshawali). Risk: High. Nepal’s Hindu Puranic literature and Buddhist Jataka tale traditions are major cultural genres; teaching notes must specify that Paul targets speculative distortion of the apostolic gospel, not Nepali cultural narrative traditions as such. |
| νόμος | nomos | ”law” | Reused [BASELINE, the Mosaic Law] | “the law” | 1:8-9: the law is good when used lawfully, but is not given for the righteous | व्यवस्था [BASELINE]. Risk: High. |
| πίστις | pistis | ”faith, trust” | Reused [BASELINE] | “faith” | Central term throughout the letter (1:2, 1:4-5, 1:14, 1:19, etc.) | विश्वास [BASELINE]. Risk: High. |
| χάρις | charis | ”grace” | Reused [BASELINE] | “grace” | 1:2, 1:14: grace as the ground of Paul’s own calling and ministry despite his past | अनुग्रह [BASELINE]. Risk: High. |
| ἔλεος | eleos | ”mercy, compassion shown to the needy/guilty” | God’s compassionate kindness shown to the undeserving, especially the persecutor Paul (1:13, 1:16) | “mercy” | Distinct from grace (χάρις, favor freely given) — mercy specifically addresses guilt and misery; Paul receives mercy as “the foremost of sinners” | दया (daya). Risk: High. New term; baseline restricts कृपा to non-soteriological contexts, and this usage is explicitly soteriological (mercy shown to a persecutor now saved), so कृपा is avoided here too; दया is chosen as a distinct, non-merit-transactional term for compassionate mercy, kept separate from अनुग्रह (grace) and from कृपा. |
| ἀγάπη | agapē | ”love” | Selfless, others-directed divine and Christian love, the goal of Paul’s charge (1:5) | “love” | The intended outcome of sound teaching is love flowing from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith | प्रेम (prem). Risk: Medium. Established Nepali Christian term for selfless, Christlike love, distinguished from माया (which can carry a more general affection/attachment sense, including romantic or worldly attachment). |
| συνείδησις | syneidēsis | ”conscience” | The inner moral faculty that either accuses or approves (1:5, 1:19; also 3:9, 4:2) | “conscience” | A “good conscience” is one of the three named goals of sound teaching, and a “shipwrecked” conscience explains apostasy (1:19) | विवेक (vivek). Risk: Medium. Chosen over अन्तस्करण (which carries heavier, explicit Samkhya/Vedanta technical philosophical baggage as a term for the mind-intellect-ego complex); विवेक is the more common, less metaphysically loaded Nepali word for moral discernment/conscience, though it too has Hindu philosophical roots (discernment between real/unreal in Advaita) that native-speaker review should monitor. |
| διάβολος / Σατανᾶς | diabolos / Satanas | ”slanderer” / “adversary” | The proper name/title of the personal spiritual adversary (1:20, “delivered to Satan”; recurs 3:6-7, 5:15) | “Satan,” “the devil” | A real, personal being opposed to God, not an impersonal force or one of many spirit-beings | शैतान (Shaitan). Risk: Critical. See full note at 3:6-7 above. |
| μακάριος καὶ μόνος θεός | makarios kai monos theos | ”blessed and only God” | Exclusive monotheism: God alone, with no other gods alongside him (1:11, echoed 1:17 “the only God”) | “the blessed God,” “the only God” | Direct exclusive-monotheism claim | Reuses परमेश्वर [BASELINE]; “only” = एकमात्र (ekmatra). Risk: High. This claim of a single, exclusive deity directly confronts Nepal’s historic multi-deity Hindu pantheon and its former state identity as “the world’s only Hindu Kingdom” (per baseline note on परमेश्वर); must be preserved without softening. |
| ἄφθαρτος | aphthartos | ”incorruptible, imperishable” | God’s eternal, non-decaying nature (1:17) | “immortal,” “incorruptible” | Distinguishes the true God from any created, decaying, or cyclically-reborn being | अविनाशी (avinashi). Risk: Medium. |
Proper names introduced in Chapter 1 (established Nepali Bible-tradition forms, for consistency across the curriculum): Timothy = तिमोथी; Ephesus = एफिसस; Hymenaeus = हुमिनयस; Alexander = अलेक्जेण्डर. Paul, per the baseline system prompt, is पावल.
Chapter 2 (2:1–15): Prayer for All People, the One Mediator, Order in Public Worship
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| προσευχή | proseuchē | ”prayer” | General term for prayer to God | ”prayers” | The general category under which the other three terms in 2:1 sit | प्रार्थना (prarthana). Risk: Low. |
| δέησις | deēsis | ”supplication, petition” | Earnest request/entreaty | ”petitions,” “supplications” | One of four prayer-terms commended in public worship (2:1) | बिन्ती (binti). Reuses the entreaty sense already noted under baseline’s “exhort.” Risk: Low. |
| ἔντευξις | enteuxis | ”intercession” | Reused [BASELINE, “intercession”] | “intercessions” | Prayer specifically on behalf of others, including rulers (2:2) | मध्यस्थता [BASELINE]. Risk: Medium. |
| εὐχαριστία | eucharistia | ”thanksgiving” | Reused [BASELINE] | “thanksgivings” | Gratitude as an essential component of public prayer | धन्यवाद [BASELINE]. Risk: Low. |
| εὐσέβεια | eusebeia | ”godliness, piety, reverence toward God” | Devout, God-oriented life; a major theme-term of the whole letter (2:2; 3:16; 4:7-8; 6:3, 5, 6, 11) | “godliness,” “piety,” “devotion” | The visible, God-oriented character the letter repeatedly commends, grounded in the “mystery of godliness” (3:16), not achieved by ascetic technique | भक्ति (bhakti), used in the qualified collocation परमेश्वरप्रतिको भक्ति (“devotion toward God”). Risk: High. Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment. भक्ति is deliberately distinct from the baseline’s rejection of भक्ति as an alternative for faith (विश्वास) — here it renders a genuinely different Greek concept (pious devotion, not saving trust). However, given Nepal’s strong Bhakti-tradition heritage (Krishna/Vishnu devotionalism, widely practiced temple bhakti), every occurrence must be anchored explicitly to परमेश्वर/ख्रीष्ट in context to prevent readers from importing Hindu Bhakti-marga devotional theology (multiple personal deities, devotional emotionalism as a path to liberation). Human theologian review required. |
| σωτήρ | sōtēr | ”Savior” | Reused from Chapter 1 above | ”God our Savior” (2:3) | God’s saving intent for “all people” (2:4) | उद्धारकर्ता. Risk: Critical. |
| μεσίτης | mesitēs | ”one who stands in the middle,” mediator, go-between | A single go-between reconciling two estranged parties; here uniquely and exclusively Christ (2:5) | “mediator,” “go-between” | Christ alone as the one mediator between God and humanity — the letter’s central Christological claim relevant to this curriculum’s core doctrine | मध्यस्थ (madhyastha). Risk: Critical. Doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator. This is arguably the single highest-stakes new term in this curriculum: Nepali religious life includes many culturally live intermediary figures — Hindu priests (पुरोहित) performing puja on a worshiper’s behalf, gurus, and, in Himalayan Buddhist and Newar Tantric practice, lamas and tantric ritual specialists mediating access to the divine/spiritual power. 1 Timothy 2:5 (“εἷς μεσίτης,” “one mediator”) must be rendered and taught with its numerical exclusivity fully intact: एक मध्यस्थ, “one — and only one — mediator,” directly excluding any other human or ritual intermediary. Mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence. |
| ἀντίλυτρον | antilytron | ”a ransom paid in exchange” | The price paid to secure release/redemption (2:6); intensified form of λύτρον | ”ransom,” “the price of redemption” | Christ’s self-giving death as the price that secures deliverance for all | फिरौती (phirauti — the ordinary, secular Nepali word for a ransom, e.g. paid for a hostage). Risk: High. Chosen deliberately over any word built on the मुक्ति root (forbidden per baseline for “salvation”) to avoid importing Hindu liberation-from-rebirth associations into the atonement concept; फिरौती is a neutral, non-religious loanword for “ransom payment,” which keeps the concept anchored to a concrete price paid for release rather than a metaphysical liberation state. |
| κήρυξ | kēryx | ”herald, town-crier” | One officially commissioned to proclaim a message with authority | ”preacher,” “herald” | Paul’s role (2:7) alongside apostle and teacher | प्रचारक (pracharak). Risk: Medium. |
| διδάσκαλος | didaskalos | ”teacher” | One who instructs; here Paul’s role among the Gentiles (2:7) | “teacher” | Distinguished from a generic guru; an authorized apostolic teaching office | शिक्षक (shikshak). Risk: Medium. |
| σωφροσύνη / σώφρων | sōphrosynē / sōphrōn | ”soundness of mind, self-control” | Disciplined, Spirit-formed self-mastery, recurring across the letter (2:9, 2:15; 3:2) as both noun and adjective | ”self-control,” “modesty,” “sensibleness,” “sound judgment” | A Spirit-enabled inward discipline expressed in outward conduct, expected of both men (3:2) and women (2:9, 2:15) | संयम (sanyam, noun) / संयमी (sanyami, adjective). Risk: High. Doctrine: Public Worship and Prayer / Qualifications for Church Leadership. संयम is also a central term in Hindu and Jain ascetic ethics (restraint/renunciation as a path toward liberation) and in Buddhist monastic discipline; the concept here must be taught as ordinary, Spirit-produced self-control within normal Christian life, not an ascetic renunciate achievement earning spiritual merit or advancing toward liberation. |
| κόσμιος καταστολή | kosmios katastolē | ”orderly/respectable clothing, deportment” | Modest, appropriate outward appearance and conduct in public worship (2:9) | “respectable apparel,” “modest dress” | Public worship conduct that does not distract from or contradict the gospel | मर्यादित पहिरन (maryadit pahiran). Risk: Medium. |
| αἰδώς | aidōs | ”modesty, sense of shame/reverence” | Appropriate, humble self-restraint in public | ”modesty,” “decency” | Complements σωφροσύνη in describing appropriate public deportment | शील (shil, “decency/modesty”). Risk: Medium. |
| ἡσυχία | hēsychia | ”quietness, stillness” | Calm, non-disruptive demeanor (2:11-12), not absolute silence (cf. 2:2, “peaceful and quiet lives”) | “silence,” “quietness” | Ordered, respectful learning posture in the assembly | मौनता (maunata). Risk: High. Doctrine: Public Worship and Prayer. Distinguished deliberately from शान्ति (already fixed [BASELINE] for the soteriological “peace with God”) — using a separate word avoids collapsing a conduct-instruction into the reserved doctrinal term. Genuinely disputed application (scope and duration of this instruction) makes this High risk requiring theologian and native-speaker review together. |
| αὐθεντέω | authenteō | ”to have/exercise authority over, to dominate” | A rare verb (2:12) whose precise sense (neutral “exercise authority” vs. negative “domineer”) is debated among interpreters | ”exercise authority over,” “have authority over,” “domineer over” | Central to the interpretive debate over women’s roles in the local church’s public teaching ministry | अधिकार जमाउनु (adhikar jamaunu). Risk: High. The lexical range genuinely spans a neutral and a negative sense in scholarship; record “alternatives_considered” and flag for theologian review per the ambiguity-handling protocol, given direct bearing on Public Worship and Prayer and Church Leadership doctrines. |
| σωθήσεται διὰ τῆς τεκνογονίας | sōthēsetai dia tēs teknogonias | ”will be saved/preserved through childbearing” | A notoriously difficult clause (2:15); σωθήσεται uses the σωτηρία root but the intended sense (final salvation? physical preservation? vindication?) is disputed | ”saved through childbearing,” “kept safe through childbearing,” “preserved in childbearing” | Reuses the σωτηρία root [BASELINE, Salvation] in a context that must not be read as works-salvation through the act of childbirth | Reuses उद्धार [BASELINE] verb form. Risk: Critical. The Critical flag here is specifically interpretive: the passage must never be taught or translated so as to suggest childbirth is a means of salvation (which would directly contradict the doctrine of Grace and Justification by Faith already fixed as Critical in the baseline). Mandatory theologian review. |
Chapter 3
Chapter 3 is the core passage and has been fully treated verse-by-verse in Part A above (3:1–16). No additional chapter-level terms remain outside that treatment.
Chapter 4 (4:1–16): Apostasy Foretold, False Asceticism, Timothy’s Personal Charge
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀφίστημι τῆς πίστεως | aphistēmi tēs pisteōs | ”to depart/stand away from the faith” | Deliberate abandonment of apostolic faith, described as a future certainty (4:1) | “depart from the faith,” “fall away from the faith,” “apostatize” | Names the doctrine of apostasy directly, grounding the letter’s urgency about Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching | विश्वासबाट तर्किनु (vishwasbata tarkinu). Risk: High. |
| πνεύματα πλάνα | pneumata plana | ”deceiving/deceitful spirits” | Personal spiritual beings that mislead through false teaching | ”deceitful spirits,” “deceiving spirits” | Names a spiritual, not merely intellectual, source behind false teaching | छलपूर्ण आत्माहरू (chhalpurna atmaharu). Risk: High. |
| διδασκαλίαι δαιμονίων | didaskaliai daimoniōn | ”teachings of demons” | Doctrines whose ultimate source is demonic, not merely mistaken human speculation | ”teachings of demons,” “doctrines of demons” | Frames false teaching as spiritually adversarial in origin | दुष्ट आत्माहरूका सिद्धान्त (dushta atmaharuka siddhanta). Risk: High. δαιμόνιον must be rendered “दुष्ट आत्मा” (evil/wicked spirit) rather than भूत-प्रेत (the everyday Nepali folk-religious term for ghosts/spirits addressed by jhankri shamans), to keep the biblical concept — fallen spiritual beings in rebellion against God — distinct from indigenous Nepali animist/shamanistic spirit-affliction beliefs, which operate on a different explanatory framework entirely. |
| κωλυόντων γαμεῖν, ἀπέχεσθαι βρωμάτων | kōlyontōn gamein, apechesthai brōmatōn | ”forbidding to marry, [commanding] to abstain from foods” | The specific false ascetic teachings in view — imposed celibacy and food restriction as spiritually superior | ”forbidding marriage, requiring abstinence from foods” | Corrects a false, works-based asceticism that denies God’s good creation, directly relevant to Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching | Descriptive rendering; no single fixed glossary term required. Risk: Medium. Worth a teaching note given resonance with existing ascetic/renunciate ideals (celibate sadhus, fasting disciplines) already flagged as High risk in the baseline for “saints” and “separation unto God’s service.” |
| ἁγιάζεται | hagiazetai | ”is made holy, is sanctified” | Reused root [BASELINE, Sanctification] | “is sanctified,” “is made holy” | Food itself is sanctified through God’s word and prayer (4:5), against the false ascetic teaching | Reuses पवित्रीकरण root [BASELINE]. Risk: High. |
| γυμνάζω / γυμνασία | gymnazō / gymnasia | ”to train/exercise (as an athlete)“ | Metaphor of disciplined training, contrasted between bodily exercise and training for godliness (4:7-8) | “train,” “exercise,” “discipline oneself” | Godliness itself requires disciplined effort, though it is not earned merit | अभ्यास गर्नु (abhyas garnu). Risk: Medium. Note the careful balance: disciplined training language must not slide into a merit-earning reading of भक्ति/godliness, which would collide with Grace already fixed as High-risk doctrine. |
| χάρισμα | charisma | ”gift” | Reused [BASELINE, “spiritual gifts”] | “gift” | Timothy’s own ministry gift, received through prophecy and the laying on of hands (4:14) | आत्मिक वरदान [BASELINE]. Risk: Medium. |
| προφητεία | prophēteia | ”prophecy” | Reused [BASELINE] | “prophecy” | The prophetic word that accompanied Timothy’s commissioning (4:14) | अगमवाणी [BASELINE]. Risk: Low. |
| πρεσβυτέριον | presbyterion | ”council/body of elders” | The collective governing body of elders (4:14) | “council of elders,” “the elders,” “presbytery” | Corporate, plural church governance, not a solitary or hereditary office | प्राचीनहरूको समूह (prachinharuko samuha). Risk: Medium. |
| ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν | epithesis tōn cheirōn | ”laying on of hands” | A commissioning/ordination rite accompanying prophecy and gift-giving (4:14; also 5:22) | “laying on of hands” | A physical, corporate act marking recognized ministry commissioning | हात राख्ने कार्य (hat rakhne karya). Risk: Medium. |
| ὑπόδειγμα | hypodeigma | ”example, pattern” | A model of conduct to be imitated (4:12) | “example,” “pattern” | Timothy’s own life is to model the qualities the letter commends | नमूना (namuna). Risk: Low. |
| προκοπή | prokopē | ”progress, advancement” | Visible growth/progress in ministry and character (4:15) | “progress” | Visible spiritual growth as evidence of faithful ministry | प्रगति (pragati). Risk: Low. |
Chapter 5 (5:1–25): Relating Across Generations, Honoring Widows, Elders Who Rule Well
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πρεσβύτερος | presbyteros | ”elder, older person” | Two distinct senses in this very chapter: (a) generic “older man/woman” (5:1-2), and (b) the recognized church office (5:17, 5:19), the same office-word as 3:1’s ἐπισκοπή context (elders and overseers overlap in the Pastorals) | “older man/woman” / “elder” (office) | Context-sensitive exactly as the baseline flags “called” (κλητός) — the same word carries a generic-age sense and a formal-office sense within a few verses | वृद्ध/पाका (vriddha/paaka, “older person,” generic sense, 5:1-2) vs. प्राचीन (prachin, church office, 5:17, 5:19). Risk: High. Doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership. Translators must determine which sense is active per occurrence, exactly as the baseline’s “called” entry requires. |
| χήρα | chēra | ”widow” | Both a literal social status and, at 5:9-10, an enrolled category of recognized church-supported widows (“the widow indeed,” ὄντως χήρα) | “widow,” “widow indeed,” “true widow” | The church’s structured obligation to widows without other family support (5:3-16) | विधवा (bidhuwa). Risk: High. Doctrine: Care for Widows and the Household of Faith. Nepali Hindu tradition has historically imposed significant social stigma on widows (restrictions on remarriage, distinctive dress, social marginalization, and historically the practice of sati, abolished 1920); this doctrine’s positive, structured, dignifying care for widows stands in real cultural contrast and should be taught with that context in view. Native-speaker and theologian review both recommended. |
| μονάνδρος γυνή | monandros gynē | ”a one-man woman” | Marital fidelity to a single husband over a lifetime, required for enrollment as a supported widow (5:9) | “the wife of one husband,” “faithful to one husband” | Parallels the male leadership qualification (3:2) applied to the honored-widow category | एक पतिकी पत्नी (ek patiki patni). Risk: Medium. |
| φιλοξενία | philoxenia | ”hospitality” | Reused root from 3:2 (φιλόξενος) | “hospitality,” “showing hospitality” | Named qualification for the honored widow’s record of good works (5:10) | अतिथि सेवा (atithi sewa). Risk: Medium. |
| ἄπιστος | apistos | ”unbelieving, without faith” | Negated form of πιστός/πίστις [BASELINE] | “unbeliever” | 5:8: neglecting one’s own family in need makes a believer “worse than an unbeliever” | अविश्वासी (avishwasi), from विश्वास [BASELINE]. Risk: Medium. |
| προΐστημι | proistēmi | ”to lead, manage, be at the head of” | Reused from 3:4-5, applied to elders who “rule/lead well” (5:17) | “rule well,” “lead well” | Public church governance, worthy of “double honor” | अगुवाई गर्नु [see 3:4-5]. Risk: High. |
| διπλῆ τιμή | diplē timē | ”double honor” | Both respect and material support for elders who lead and teach well (5:17-18) | “double honor” | Elders devoted to preaching and teaching merit both honor and material provision from the church | दोहोरो आदर (dohoro aadar). Risk: Medium. |
| κοπιῶντες ἐν λόγῳ καὶ διδασκαλίᾳ | kopiōntes en logō kai didaskalia | ”laboring in word and doctrine” | Diligent, exhausting effort in preaching and teaching, reusing the διδασκαλία root | ”laboring in preaching and teaching” | Ties material support for elders directly to doctrinal labor, reinforcing Sound Doctrine’s centrality | Reuses सिद्धान्त [see Ch. 1]. Risk: Medium. |
| μάρτυς | martys | ”witness” | Legal/procedural requirement of two or three witnesses before an accusation against an elder is received (5:19) | “witness” | Protects church leaders from unsubstantiated accusation, part of due church-discipline process | साक्षी (sakshi). Risk: Medium. |
| ἐλέγχω | elenchō | ”to reprove, rebuke, expose” | Public correction of a sinning elder “in the presence of all” (5:20) | “rebuke,” “reprove” | Public accountability for church leaders, balancing due process with real discipline | हप्काउनु / अनुशासन गर्नु (hapkaunu / anushasan garnu). Risk: Medium. |
| πρόκρισις | prokrisis | ”prejudgment, partiality” | Favoritism in judging accusations against elders (5:21) | “partiality,” “favoritism,” “prejudice” | Impartial justice within the church’s internal discipline process | पक्षपात (pakshapat). Risk: Medium. |
| ἁγνός | hagnos | ”pure, chaste” | Moral self-purity, especially regarding complicity in others’ sin (5:22); distinct from ἅγιος (holy, [BASELINE]) | “pure,” “keep yourself pure” | Personal moral integrity in the exercise of church discipline authority (e.g., in the laying on of hands) | निर्मल (nirmal, “unstained/pure”). Risk: Medium-High. Chosen deliberately over शुद्ध, which the baseline already flags for its ritual-purity connotations (closer to Hindu/Buddhist ceremonial cleanliness); निर्मल keeps the sense moral rather than ceremonial. |
Chapter 6 (6:1–21): Slaves and Masters, Godliness Falsely Pursued for Gain, the Charge to Guard the Deposit
| Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Nepali rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοῦλος | doulos | ”slave, bondservant” | First-century institutional slavery, addressed pastorally without either endorsing or launching a social revolution (6:1-2) | “bondservant,” “slave” | Christian identity and conduct transform how believers relate within existing social structures, without the letter making slavery itself a doctrinal theme | दास (das). Risk: High. Given Nepal’s own historical bonded-labor system (the Kamaiya system, formally abolished only in 2000) and its ongoing social memory, this term carries live cultural weight; teaching must clarify the New Testament’s first-century social context without appearing to endorse any form of bonded servitude, historical or contemporary, in Nepal. |
| δεσπότης | despotēs | ”master, lord (of a household/slave)“ | A human master’s authority over a slave/servant, distinct from κύριος’s reserved theological sense | ”master” | The human, social-institutional counterpart-term to the reserved theological “Lord” | मालिक (malik). Risk: Medium. Baseline rejects मालिक as an alternative for κύριος/“Lord” (reserved for God/Christ); here, in a purely human-master context, मालिक is the correct and safe choice — the two usages must never be confused. |
| πορισμός | porismos | ”a means of gain, source of profit” | The false teachers’ view that godliness is a means to material profit (6:5) | “means of gain,” “a way to get rich” | Directly names a prosperity-oriented distortion of godliness the letter explicitly rejects | लाभको माध्यम (labhko madhyam). Risk: High. Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment. Directly relevant wherever prosperity-gospel teaching is present in the Nepali church context; theologian review recommended. |
| αὐτάρκεια | autarkeia | ”sufficiency, contentment” | Inner satisfaction independent of external circumstances (6:6, “godliness with contentment is great gain”) | “contentment,” “sufficiency” | Redefines “great gain” away from material profit toward godliness joined with contentment | सन्तोष (santosh). Risk: Medium. Doctrine: Godliness and Contentment. |
| φιλαργυρία | philargyria | ”love of money” | The root vice named as “a root of all kinds of evils” (6:10) | “love of money” | Names the specific besetting sin most directly opposed to contentment and godliness in this chapter | धनको लोभ (dhanko lobh). Risk: High. |
| ὄλεθρος καὶ ἀπώλεια | olethros kai apōleia | ”ruin and destruction” | The consequence of the love of money for those who pursue riches (6:9) | “ruin and destruction” | Serious, not merely social, consequence of greed | विनाश र सर्वनाश (vinash ra sarvanash). Risk: Medium. |
| ὁμολογία | homologia | ”confession, acknowledgment” | Public, formal declaration of allegiance/belief — Timothy’s own “good confession” (6:12) echoing the same confessional pattern as the baseline’s Romans 10:9 “Jesus is Lord” confession | ”confession,” “the good confession” | Publicly confessed faith as an act of costly, faithful witness | अंगीकार (angikar); “the good confession” = उत्तम अंगीकार (uttam angikar). Risk: High. Directly connects to the baseline’s Critical-risk Lordship-of-Christ confession language (रोमी १०:९); should be taught alongside that verse for consistency. |
| ζωὴ αἰώνιος | zōē aiōnios | ”eternal life” | The believer’s ultimate hope, to be taken hold of (6:12, 6:19) | “eternal life” | Personal, relational, unending life with God through Christ | अनन्त जीवन (ananta jiwan). Risk: High. Must be distinguished from Hindu concepts of the eternal ātman’s union with Brahman and from cyclical continuity across rebirths, and from Buddhist frameworks in which “eternal” continuous existence is itself viewed as the problem to be escaped (cf. baseline’s caution on उद्धार/मोक्ष/निर्वाण); अनन्त जीवन is unending, personal fellowship with the living God through Christ. |
| ἐπιφάνεια | epiphaneia | ”appearing, manifestation” | The future, visible return of Christ (6:14) | “appearing,” “coming” | The Second Coming as the horizon toward which Timothy’s charge is kept | प्रकटन (prakatan). Risk: Medium. |
| μόνος δυνάστης | monos dynastēs | ”the only Sovereign/Ruler” | God’s unique, exclusive sovereignty over all rulers (6:15) | “the only Sovereign,” “the only Ruler” | Reasserts exclusive monotheism (echoing 1:17) in a doxological climax | एकमात्र शासक (ekmatra shasak). Risk: High. |
| βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων | basileus tōn basileuontōn kai kyrios tōn kyrieuontōn | ”King of those who reign and Lord of those who rule” | The absolute superlative title expressing Christ’s supremacy over every other king/lord | ”King of kings and Lord of lords” | Christ’s supreme sovereignty over all earthly rule, of any kind, at any time | राजाहरूका राजा र प्रभुहरूका प्रभु, reusing प्रभु [BASELINE, Lordship of Christ]. Risk: Critical. Given Nepal’s Shah-dynasty monarchy (abolished 2008), whose kings held grand royal titles and were venerated with divine-avatar status until living memory (per the baseline’s caution on देहधारण/अवतार), this title must be taught as Christ’s unique cosmic sovereignty superior to and independent of any earthly throne — not as one grand royal title comparable to those once claimed for Nepal’s kings. Mandatory theologian review. |
| φῶς ἀπρόσιτον | phōs aprositon | ”unapproachable light” | God’s radiant, inaccessible holiness (6:16) | “unapproachable light,” “light no one can approach” | God’s transcendent glory, echoing the baseline’s caution on light-imagery for महिमा (“glory”) | अगम्य ज्योति (agamya jyoti). Risk: Medium-High. Same caution as baseline’s महिमा entry regarding Kathmandu Valley Tantric/living-goddess divine-radiance associations; keep firmly anchored to परमेश्वर in context. |
| γνῶσις ψευδώνυμος | gnōsis pseudōnymos | ”falsely-named/falsely-called knowledge” | Speculative teaching claiming to be superior spiritual “knowledge,” rejected as a counterfeit (6:20) | “so-called knowledge,” “knowledge falsely so called” | Names a form of false teaching that claims special spiritual knowledge as the path to a fuller salvation/spirituality | झूटो ज्ञान (jhutho gyaan). Risk: Critical. ज्ञान (gyaan, “knowledge”) is a major, doctrinally load-bearing term in both Hindu jnana-mārga (the “path of knowledge” toward mokṣa) and Buddhist prajñā/enlightenment traditions widely practiced in Nepal, where spiritual knowledge itself functions as a means of liberation. Paul’s rejection of “falsely-called knowledge” is an important opportunity to clarify Christian epistemology (revealed truth received by faith, centered on Christ) against any knowledge-as-liberation framework — but only if ज्ञान is never left unqualified. Mandatory theologian review for every occurrence, directly tied to Guarding the Deposit of Faith and Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching. |
| παραθήκη | parathēkē | ”a deposit entrusted for safekeeping” | A valuable item placed in trust with another, to be guarded and returned intact (6:20) | “the deposit,” “what has been entrusted to you,” “the trust” | The apostolic gospel/sound doctrine as a treasure entrusted to Timothy (and the church) for careful guarding, not personal alteration | थाती (thati — a standard Nepali legal/financial term for a deposit held in trust). Risk: High. Doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith. थाती is chosen because it is an ordinary, secular Nepali word for an entrusted deposit/trust, giving vivid, concrete force to Paul’s metaphor without importing any competing religious connotation. |
| κενοφωνία | kenophōnia | ”empty sound/talk” | Vain, contentless speech/argumentation (6:20) | “empty chatter,” “godless chatter,” “vain babblings” | Contrasted with the substantial, guarded content of true apostolic doctrine | व्यर्थका कुराहरू (byarthaka kuraharu). Risk: Low. |
