Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis: 1 Corinthians (Korean)
Scope and Method
This document maps every identifiable Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, and every typological pattern across the full text of 1 Corinthians (chapters 1–16), and cross-references these against the baseline Romans Language Package to establish rendering-consistency rules for quotations shared between the two curricula. Chapters containing no direct OT citation are explicitly marked “reviewed — no direct citation” rather than silently omitted, per the full-book-coverage mandate.
Citations are normalized in the format Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., “1 Corinthians 15:3”, “Genesis 15:6”, “Romans 10:13”). Korean Bible citation format (per the baseline’s Cross-Reference Preservation Rules) uses the KRV book name followed by chapter:verse, e.g. 로마서 10:13, 창세기 15:6. Table 0 below extends the baseline’s book-name table to every OT/NT book referenced in this analysis.
“Translation sensitivity” ratings use the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as doctrine_risk_registry.json. A rating of Critical or High always includes a specific, grounded reason.

Part 1 — Cross-Reference Matrix by Chapter
Chapter 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| 1 Corinthians 1:2 | Universal call to salvation | (all believers, corporate) | Allusion to Joel 2:32; directly quoted verbatim in Romans 10:13 (“everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”) | High — the phrase “이름을 부르는” must render identically to the established Romans 10:13 Korean phrasing to preserve cross-curriculum thesis-verse consistency (baseline’s “universal_scope_of_gospel” doctrine, High risk) |
| 1 Corinthians 1:19 | The Cross as Wisdom vs. worldly wisdom | Isaiah, “the wise” | Direct quotation of Isaiah 29:14 (“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise”) | Medium-High — connects to 지혜 (wisdom) collision already flagged with Confucian/Buddhist wisdom ideals in 08_core_glossary.md |
| 1 Corinthians 1:31 | Boasting excluded; grace alone | Jeremiah | Direct quotation of Jeremiah 9:24 (“let him who boasts, boast in the Lord”); same OT text also cited in 2 Corinthians 10:17 | Medium — thematically parallel to Romans 3:27’s boasting-exclusion doctrine (no shared direct quotation, but shared vocabulary field 자랑/kauchaomai must stay consistent across curricula) |
Chapter 2
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| 1 Corinthians 2:9 | Hidden wisdom now revealed by the Spirit | Isaiah | Loose citation/echo of Isaiah 64:4 (cf. Isaiah 65:17) | Medium — must be taught as prophetic hope now disclosed by revelation, not an exact verbatim OT quotation, and never framed as esoteric/divinatory secret knowledge (cf. 비밀/mystery caution in 07_semantic_analysis.md ch.2) |
| 1 Corinthians 2:16 | The mind of Christ given by the Spirit | Isaiah | Direct quotation of Isaiah 40:13 (“who has known the mind of the Lord”); also directly quoted in Romans 11:34 | Critical — this exact quotation appears verbatim in both curricula; the Korean rendering of “누가 주의 마음을 알았느냐” must be identical in both, since inconsistent renderings of the same OT quotation across curricula would confuse learners moving between lessons (cf. baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents”) |
Chapter 3
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| 1 Corinthians 3:19 | God confounds human wisdom | Job, Eliphaz | Direct quotation of Job 5:13 (“He catches the wise in their craftiness”) | Medium |
| 1 Corinthians 3:20 | Futility of merely human reasoning | David (Psalmist) | Direct quotation of Psalm 94:11 (“the Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile”) | Medium |
| 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 | The church as God’s temple | Moses, Solomon (typological background) | Typological allusion to the tabernacle (Exodus 25–40) and temple (1 Kings 8) as the locus of God’s indwelling presence | Medium-High — 하나님의 성전 must be taught as corporate Spirit-indwelt presence, not a location requiring ritual purification (cf. 08 glossary #12) |
Chapter 4
Reviewed — no direct OT quotation. Paul’s language of hidden things being brought to light at final judgment (1 Corinthians 4:5) echoes the general judgment-day theme found throughout Scripture (e.g., cf. Romans 2:16, “God judges the secrets of men”) but is not itself a citation. No new Critical/High cross-reference risk beyond terms already registered (사도, 청지기, 심판하다).
Chapter 5
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| 1 Corinthians 5:7 | Christ as the Passover Lamb; church purity | Moses, Israel in Egypt, Christ | Typological fulfillment of Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb) | Critical — messianic typology; must connect Christ’s sacrificial death to the Passover pattern with full atoning/substitutionary force, reinforcing the already-Critical ὑπέρ (“for our sins”) rendering established for 1 Corinthians 15:3 in 07_semantic_analysis.md |
| 1 Corinthians 5:13 | Church discipline; removing corrupting sin | Moses, covenant community | Direct quotation pattern from Deuteronomy 17:7 (repeated at Deuteronomy 19:19; 22:21; 24:7): “purge the evil person from among you” | High — must be taught as a redemptive covenant-community discipline command, not as grounds for shamanistic curse-invocation or exorcism (cf. 08 glossary #18, “hand over to Satan”) |
Chapter 6
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| 1 Corinthians 6:16 | Sexual union and one-flesh creation order | Adam, Eve | Direct quotation of Genesis 2:24 (“the two shall become one flesh”) | High — must be distinguished from a casual physical union; grounds sexual ethics in creation order, feeding directly into chapter 7’s marriage theology |
| 1 Corinthians 6:19 | The body as the Spirit’s temple | (individual believer) | Continues the temple typology of 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, now applied individually | Medium-High — same caution as 3:16-17; see also 08 glossary #20 (“bought with a price”) for the adjoining amulet-purchase risk |
Chapter 7
Reviewed — no direct OT quotation. Paul’s teaching on marriage presupposes the creation-order background of Genesis 1:27-28 and Genesis 2:18-24 (the latter directly quoted at 1 Corinthians 6:16) but does not cite it afresh here. Teaching notes should cross-reference the Genesis 2:24 citation in chapter 6 for doctrinal continuity when addressing Korea’s Confucian filial marriage-duty pressure (already flagged High in 08_core_glossary.md, item #21).
Chapter 8
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| 1 Corinthians 8:4, 6 | Monotheism as the ground for Christian liberty regarding idol meat | Moses, Israel | Echo of the Shema, Deuteronomy 6:4 (“the LORD our God, the LORD is one”) | Critical — this is the foundational monotheistic claim underlying the whole idol-meat discussion; must reinforce the baseline’s Critical warning that 하나님 is never one spirit among many in a shamanistic pantheon, directly supporting (not merely adjacent to) the doctrine of God |
Chapter 9
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| 1 Corinthians 9:9 | Ministers’ right to material support | Moses | Direct quotation of Deuteronomy 25:4 (“you shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain”); also quoted in 1 Timothy 5:18 | Low-Medium — agrarian illustration; needs brief explanatory context for readers with limited OT law-code literacy, no doctrinal collision |
| 1 Corinthians 9:13 | Temple service and ministerial support | Aaron, the Levites | Allusion to Numbers 18:8-20 and Deuteronomy 18:1-8 (priestly portion from temple offerings) | Low-Medium |
Chapter 10
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| 1 Corinthians 10:1-4 | Israel’s wilderness experience as typological warning; Christ as the Rock | Moses, Israel (wilderness generation), Christ | Allusion to Exodus 13:21-22 (cloud), Exodus 14:22 (sea), Exodus 17:6 / Numbers 20:11 (the Rock) | Critical — Paul’s explicit identification “the Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4) is direct messianic typology and must be rendered “그 반석은 곧 그리스도시라” without softening into a mere symbolic figure of speech |
| 1 Corinthians 10:7 | Idolatrous feasting as warning | Aaron, Israel | Direct quotation of Exodus 32:6 (“the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play” — golden calf) | High — idolatry-feast connects directly to the Critical idol-meat/jesa doctrine established in 08_core_glossary.md #25, #33 |
| 1 Corinthians 10:8 | Sexual immorality tied to idolatry | Israel, Moabites, Phinehas | Allusion to Numbers 25:1-9 (23,000 fell) | High — links πορνεία (already High) directly to idolatry |
| 1 Corinthians 10:9 | Testing Christ/the Lord | Israel, Moses | Allusion to Numbers 21:5-6 (fiery serpents) | Medium-High |
| 1 Corinthians 10:10 | Grumbling against God | Israel, Korah | Allusion to Numbers 14:2; Numbers 16:41-49 | Medium |
| 1 Corinthians 10:20-21 | Table of the Lord vs. table of demons | Moses, Israel | Direct quotation of Deuteronomy 32:17 (“they sacrificed to demons, not God”) | Critical — this OT text is the direct source for Paul’s “table/cup of demons” language already flagged Critical in 08_core_glossary.md #34; the mudang gut-ritual offering-table parallel noted there is not incidental but textually grounded in this citation |
| 1 Corinthians 10:26 | Christian liberty grounded in God’s ownership of creation | David (Psalmist) | Direct quotation of Psalm 24:1 (“the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof”) | Low-Medium — positively grounds freedom to eat marketplace food without contradicting the jesa-related caution elsewhere in the chapter |
Chapter 11
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| 1 Corinthians 11:7 | Man as the image and glory of God | Adam | Allusion to Genesis 1:26-27 | High — must retain that both sexes bear God’s image (Genesis 1:27, “male and female he created them”) even while Paul develops differentiated headship roles; guards against a purely hierarchical reading colored by Korea’s Confucian household-head (가장) pattern (already flagged High for κεφαλή) |
| 1 Corinthians 11:8-9 | Woman created from and for man | Adam, Eve | Allusion to Genesis 2:18-23 | High — same caution as above |
| 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 | Institution of the Lord’s Supper; new covenant | Moses (covenant blood), Jeremiah (new covenant), Christ | Allusion to Exodus 24:8 (“the blood of the covenant”) and direct fulfillment of Jeremiah 31:31 (“new covenant”) | Critical — the Supper’s OT covenant-renewal background (Passover, Sinai covenant blood, promised new covenant) must be taught explicitly, since without this OT grounding the Supper’s form-similarity to the Confucian jesa memorial meal (already Critical in 08_core_glossary.md #40, #44) risks being misread as mere ancestor-veneration rather than new-covenant worship of the living Lord |
Chapter 12
Reviewed — no direct OT quotation. The one-body/many-members imagery may loosely echo Israel’s corporate covenant identity as “one people,” but this is not a specific citation. No new Critical/High cross-reference risk beyond the already-registered σῶμα Χριστοῦ doctrine (08_core_glossary.md #46).
Chapter 13
Reviewed — no direct OT quotation. The love ethic of this chapter shares its theological root with Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor as yourself”), which is directly quoted in Romans 13:9. Although 1 Corinthians 13 does not quote Leviticus 19:18 verbatim, translators and teachers should cross-reference the established Romans 13:9 rendering (네 이웃을 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라) when framing agapē’s canonical continuity, particularly to reinforce the ἀγάπη/정(jeong) distinction already flagged Critical in 08_core_glossary.md #49.
Chapter 14
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| 1 Corinthians 14:21 | Tongues as a sign | Isaiah | Direct quotation of Isaiah 28:11-12 (“by people of strange tongues… I will speak to this people”) | High — grounds the tongues-as-sign doctrine; must be taught carefully given the prominence of glossolalia in Korean Pentecostal/charismatic tradition, already flagged High for 방언 in 08_core_glossary.md #52 |
| 1 Corinthians 14:25 | Unbeliever convicted, God’s presence acknowledged | (nations, generic) | Echo of Isaiah 45:14 and Zechariah 8:23 (nations acknowledging “God is really among you”) | Medium |
| 1 Corinthians 14:34 | Order in worship | (disputed reference) | General allusion to “the Law,” likely Genesis 3:16 or broader Torah order-principle; exact source debated among scholars | High — requires theologian-level handling given genuine scholarly disagreement on the referent; the Korean rendering must not overclaim a specific pinpoint OT citation where the source itself is contested |
Chapter 15 (12–58; verses 1–11 fully treated in 07_semantic_analysis.md)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 | Christ’s death and resurrection “according to the Scriptures” | Isaiah, David, Hosea | Fulfillment cluster: Isaiah 53:5-12 (suffering servant), Psalm 16:10 (resurrection hope, also quoted Acts 2:27; 13:35), Hosea 6:2 (third-day pattern) | Critical — must convey genuine, specific, linear historical prophetic fulfillment, directly paralleling the baseline’s “fulfillment_of_prophecy” doctrine already established for Romans 1:2-4 (High risk there; elevated to Critical here as the passage anchors the entire resurrection chapter) |
| 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 | Adam-Christ federal headship; firstfruits | Adam, Christ | Typological contrast with Genesis 3 (Adam’s fall and death); firstfruits imagery echoes Leviticus 23:10-11 (Feast of Firstfruits) | Critical — this typology is directly paralleled in Romans 5:12-19 (“as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive” pattern); rendering of the Adam/Christ contrast structure must remain consistent in vocabulary and syntax pattern across both curricula |
| 1 Corinthians 15:25 | Christ’s messianic enthronement and final victory | David, Christ | Direct quotation of Psalm 110:1 (“until he has put all his enemies under his feet”); the same psalm is echoed in Romans 8:34 (“who is at the right hand of God”) | High — royal-messianic enthronement force must be retained; ensure “하나님 우편에” phrasing, if used in both curricula, remains consistent |
| 1 Corinthians 15:27 | Christ as true representative of humanity | David/humanity, Christ | Direct quotation of Psalm 8:6 (“you have put all things under his feet”) | Medium-High |
| 1 Corinthians 15:32 | The despair of a no-resurrection worldview (quoted as a foil) | (Epicurean-style fatalism) | Direct quotation of Isaiah 22:13 (“let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die”) | Medium — must be clearly framed as the despairing logic Paul rejects, not his own counsel |
| 1 Corinthians 15:45 | Christ as the life-giving last Adam | Adam, Christ | Direct quotation of Genesis 2:7 (“the first man Adam became a living being”) | Critical — same federal-headship Christology as 15:20-22; foundational to the whole resurrection-body argument |
| 1 Corinthians 15:54 | Death’s defeat | Isaiah | Direct quotation of Isaiah 25:8 (“he will swallow up death forever”) | High — eschatological victory-over-death promise; shares theological ground (though not a shared direct quotation) with Romans 8:38-39’s assurance doctrine |
| 1 Corinthians 15:55 | Death’s sting removed | Hosea | Direct quotation of Hosea 13:14 (“O death, where is your sting?”) | High — same note as above |
| 1 Corinthians 15:33 | (Note, non-scriptural) | Menander (Greek comic poet) | This is a quotation of a Greek literary source (“bad company corrupts good morals”), not an Old Testament citation | Low — flagged only to prevent translators from mistakenly treating it as a scriptural allusion requiring OT cross-reference handling |
Chapter 16
Reviewed — no direct OT quotation. The collection for the Jerusalem saints (1 Corinthians 16:1-4) loosely echoes OT generosity/care-for-the-poor principles (e.g., Deuteronomy 15:7-11) but cites no specific text. “Maranatha” (1 Corinthians 16:22) is a preserved Aramaic eschatological invocation, not an OT quotation. No new Critical/High cross-reference risk beyond terms already registered (아나테마/저주, 마라나타) in 08_core_glossary.md.
Part 2 — Messianic References and Typology Summary
| Type figure / pattern | OT source | NT fulfillment (1 Corinthians) | Translation sensitivity |
|---|
| Passover lamb | Exodus 12:1-13 | Christ our Passover lamb sacrificed (1 Corinthians 5:7) | Critical — must retain substitutionary, atoning force |
| The Rock in the wilderness | Exodus 17:6; Numbers 20:11 | ”The Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4) | Critical — explicit divine identification, not mere metaphor |
| Firstfruits offering | Leviticus 23:10-11 | Christ as “firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:20, 23) | High — guarantees the full resurrection harvest to follow |
| The first Adam | Genesis 2:7; Genesis 3 | Christ as the “last Adam,” a life-giving spirit (1 Corinthians 15:45); Adam-Christ contrast (15:21-22) | Critical — directly parallels Romans 5:12-19; rendering consistency required |
| Davidic messianic enthronement (Psalm 110; Psalm 8) | Psalm 110:1; Psalm 8:6 | Christ’s present reign until all enemies, including death, are subdued (1 Corinthians 15:25-27) | High |
| Suffering Servant / resurrection hope | Isaiah 53; Psalm 16:10; Hosea 6:2 | ”Christ died for our sins… was raised on the third day, according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) | Critical — this is the core passage’s theological anchor |
| Sinai covenant blood / new covenant | Exodus 24:8; Jeremiah 31:31 | Institution of the Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:23-25) | Critical — explicit OT covenant grounding needed to differentiate from jesa |
Part 3 — Shared Quotations and Parallels with Romans: Rendering-Consistency Rules
The following OT texts are cited or closely echoed in both 1 Corinthians and the baseline Romans curriculum. Where the same OT verse is directly quoted in both books, the Korean rendering must be verbatim identical across both curricula’s materials. Where the connection is thematic rather than a shared direct quotation, vocabulary and doctrinal framing must remain consistent, though exact wording may naturally differ with context.
| # | OT source | 1 Corinthians occurrence | Romans occurrence | Rule |
|---|
| 1 | Joel 2:32 | 1 Corinthians 1:2 (allusion) | Romans 10:13 (direct quotation) | The phrase “누구든지 주의 이름을 부르는 자는 구원을 받으리라” established for Romans 10:13 must govern the vocabulary choice (“주의 이름을 부르다”) wherever 1 Corinthians 1:2 is rendered, preserving the baseline’s mandated verbatim-consistency rule for Romans 10:9-10/13 |
| 2 | Isaiah 40:13 | 1 Corinthians 2:16 (direct quotation) | Romans 11:34 (direct quotation) | Verbatim match required. Both are direct quotations of the identical OT verse; render “누가 주의 마음을 알았느냐” identically in both curricula |
| 3 | Genesis 2:7; Genesis 3 (Adam typology) | 1 Corinthians 15:21-22, 45 | Romans 5:12-19 | Maintain consistent Adam-Christ contrastive sentence structure and terminology (아담 / 그리스도) across both curricula; the theological pattern (“through one man… so also through one man”) must read as the same doctrine in both books |
| 4 | Leviticus 19:18 | 1 Corinthians 13 (thematic root only, not directly quoted) | Romans 13:9 (direct quotation) | When teaching 1 Corinthians 13’s ἀγάπη, cross-reference the established Romans 13:9 rendering (네 이웃을 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라) for canonical continuity; do not introduce a competing love-command phrasing |
| 5 | Jeremiah 9:24 (boasting) | 1 Corinthians 1:31 (direct quotation) | Romans 3:27 (thematic parallel — “boasting is excluded,” not a quotation of this verse) | Keep 자랑(하다)/kauchaomai vocabulary consistent between the direct OT quotation in 1 Corinthians and the doctrinal statement in Romans, since both address the same Korean achievement-culture (출세) collision risk |
| 6 | Psalm 110:1 | 1 Corinthians 15:25 (direct quotation) | Romans 8:34 (allusion, “at the right hand of God”) | If both curricula render the “right hand of God” phrase, use identical wording (하나님 우편에) |
| 7 | Deuteronomy 32:17 | 1 Corinthians 10:20-21 (direct quotation) | Romans 1:18-25 (thematic idolatry parallel, not a shared quotation) | Maintain the baseline’s careful vocabulary separation of 우상 (idol) and 귀신 (demon/evil spirit) consistently across both curricula’s idolatry teaching |
| 8 | Habakkuk 2:4 | 1 Corinthians 15 (thematic faith/resurrection framework, no direct quotation) | Romans 1:17 (direct quotation, “the righteous shall live by faith”) | No shared quotation to render verbatim, but 믿음 (Critical/High tier per baseline) must retain identical doctrinal weight in both curricula’s faith teaching |
Part 4 — Summary: Highest-Priority Cross-Reference Sensitivities
| Rank | Cross-reference | Grounded reason for Critical/High rating |
|---|
| 1 | Isaiah 40:13 = 1 Corinthians 2:16 = Romans 11:34 | Identical OT quotation appears verbatim in both curricula; any Korean rendering mismatch directly violates the baseline’s cross-document consistency rule |
| 2 | Genesis 2:7/Genesis 3 Adam typology = 1 Corinthians 15:21-22, 45 = Romans 5:12-19 | Foundational federal-headship Christology developed in near-identical argumentative structure in both books |
| 3 | Deuteronomy 32:17 = 1 Corinthians 10:20-21 | Direct textual source for the “table of demons” parallel to Korean shamanistic gut-ritual offering tables, already the single most pastorally loaded image in the book |
| 4 | Isaiah 53/Psalm 16:10/Hosea 6:2 = 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 | The core passage’s central prophetic-fulfillment claim; anchors the entire resurrection doctrine of the curriculum |
| 5 | Exodus 12 (Passover) = 1 Corinthians 5:7; Exodus 24:8/Jeremiah 31:31 = 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 | Both ground the Lord’s Supper/atonement typology that must be explicitly differentiated from the Confucian jesa memorial-meal pattern |
| 6 | Deuteronomy 6:4 (Shema) = 1 Corinthians 8:4, 6 | Directly underlies the doctrine of God (하나님, Critical baseline term) as the ground for Christian liberty regarding idol meat |
| 7 | Exodus 17:6/Numbers 20:11 = 1 Corinthians 10:4 (“the Rock was Christ”) | Explicit, non-metaphorical messianic identification requiring precise doctrinal rendering |
| 8 | Joel 2:32 = 1 Corinthians 1:2 = Romans 10:13 | Shared “call on the name of the Lord” language must match the established Romans thesis-passage rendering |
This document feeds directly into analysis/10_biblical_theme_map.md, which traces how these cross-references organize into the letter’s larger canonical theme structure.
