What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis: 1 John (Korean Destination Language)

Purpose

This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the entire book of 1 John (chapters 1–5), extending the baseline Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json framework to this curriculum. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (this book): same 29 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. Per the PRD Phase 1 full-book coverage mandate, every chapter of 1 John is walked through in sequence below — first to last — so that no chapter or major section is silently skipped, even where a chapter’s doctrinal content overlaps with material already covered elsewhere in the letter. The core passage (1 John 4:7–21) is the theological anchor of the curriculum, not its scope boundary; it recurs below at its natural location in chapter 4 alongside the doctrines it most directly carries (God is Love; Love for the Brethren; Propitiation; Confidence before God).

Risk tiers follow the identical Critical/High/Medium/Low framework established in the baseline Romans package:

Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrine Coverage

1 John 1:1–10 — Eyewitness Testimony, Fellowship, Light, Confession

1:1–4 — Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony The prologue’s fourfold sensory testimony (“heard… seen… looked upon… touched”) establishes the historical, apostolic ground for everything that follows, and introduces both “fellowship” (교제) and “eternal life” (영생) as themes to be developed.

  • Doctrine: Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony — Low — 1 John 1:1-4 — Retain the testimony’s authoritative, non-mystical, historical-eyewitness tone; low collision risk. — Automated review.
  • Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another (introduced) — Medium — 1 John 1:3 — 교제 must carry both the vertical (with the Father and Son) and horizontal (with one another) sense together, per this letter’s distinctive double structure. — Native speaker review.

1:5–7 — God is Light; Walking in the Light 1:5 states the letter’s first thesis about God’s nature (“God is light, and in him is no darkness at all”); 1:6-7 apply this to the believer’s ethical “walk” and to fellowship.

  • Doctrine: God is Light — High — 1 John 1:5; 1:6-7; 2:8-11 — 빛/어둠 risk colliding with Won Buddhism’s 일원상 cosmic-light symbolism and Cheondogyo’s 인내천 indwelling-divine-light teaching, plus shamanistic ritual candlelight in gut ceremonies; must be taught as the personal, morally perfect character of the one true God. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Walking in the Light versus Darkness — High — 1 John 1:6-7; 2:9-11 — The ethical “walk” must be an ongoing moral/relational pattern before a personal God, not a single ritual act, and must not be conflated with the light-symbolism collisions above when applied to conduct. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another (developed) — Medium — 1 John 1:6-7 — Fellowship is broken by walking in darkness and restored by walking in the light together; preserve the letter’s double vertical/horizontal structure. — Native speaker review.

1:8–10 — Confession, Cleansing, Universal Sinfulness This unit sets up the letter’s confession vocabulary and the moral seriousness of sin, in contrast to a self-deceiving claim to sinlessness.

  • Doctrine: Universal Sinfulness and Self-Deception — High — 1 John 1:8; 1:10 — Claiming sinlessness is exposed as self-deception and making God a liar; must be taught as moral self-honesty before a personal God, not merely 체면 (social face) management. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin — High — 1 John 1:8-10; 2:1-2 — 1:9’s confession must use 자백하다 (moral confession to God alone), kept distinct from Catholic sacramental confession (고해성사) and from a mudang’s ritual mediating role. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Cleansing from Sin by the Blood of Christ — High — 1 John 1:7; 1:9 — 깨끗하게 하다 must be distinguished from shamanistic ritual purification (부정을 씻음) addressing misfortune/pollution rather than moral guilt. — Human theologian review.

Chapter 1 summary: introduces Apostolic Testimony, Fellowship, God is Light, Walking in Light/Darkness, Universal Sinfulness, Confession, Cleansing. No new doctrines beyond these; fully reviewed.

1 John 2:1–29 — Advocate, Confession of Christ, Antichrist, Love-Commandment, Anointing

2:1–2 — Advocate and Propitiation Christ is introduced as the believer’s Advocate before the Father, on the ground of his propitiatory work.

  • Doctrine: Advocate and Intercession of Christ — High — 1 John 2:1-2 — 대언자 must not be read as a mudang’s ritual mediation with an unpredictable offended spirit; Christ’s advocacy is a settled, righteous legal defense secured once for all. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Propitiation and Atoning Sacrifice (introduced) — Critical — 1 John 2:2; 4:10 — 화목제물 collides directly with shamanistic gut-ritual appeasement-offerings (제물) and Confucian jesa food-offerings (제사); must be taught with God himself as the initiator, not a party appeasing an unpredictable power. — Human theologian review.

2:3–11 — Commandment to Love, Walking in Light/Darkness Knowing God is evidenced by keeping his commandments, summarized as the love-command, and by walking in light rather than hating a brother.

  • Doctrine: The Commandment to Love and Obedience of Faith — High — 1 John 2:3-4,7-8 — 계명 must flow from grace-given relationship, not function as an independent meritorious code, and must not be assimilated to Confucian ritual-propriety (예) or filial-duty (효) hierarchical codes. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Walking in the Light versus Darkness (continued) — High — 1 John 2:9-11 — Hatred of a brother while claiming to be “in the light” is exposed as self-contradiction; reinforce the personal-God ethical frame. — Human theologian review.

2:12–17 — World, Overcoming, Truth Warnings against loving “the world” (κόσμος in its God-opposing sense) frame the assurance and victory themes developed later.

  • Doctrine: Overcoming the World through Faith (introduced) — High — 1 John 2:15-17 — 세상 here is the God-opposing moral-spiritual system, not humanity as such; must not be conflated with 4:9’s “world” as object of God’s love. Distinguished from 부적/액막이 folk warding-practices. — Human theologian review.

2:18–23 — Antichrist The letter’s first direct antichrist teaching: many antichrists have appeared, denying the Father and the Son.

  • Doctrine: Antichrist and False Teaching — Critical — 1 John 2:18-23; 2:26 — Korea’s living-founder new religious movements claiming unique messianic/second-coming status (통일교, JMS, 신천지) are a documented, ongoing real-world instance of exactly this denial pattern. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Truth versus Deception (introduced) — High — 1 John 2:4,21 — 진리 must be God’s own revealed, personal, exclusive truth in Christ, not a relativistic “my truth” or Confucian moral-Way (도). — Human theologian review.

2:20, 27 — Anointing Every believer, not an elite class, has the Spirit’s anointing that teaches true doctrine.

  • Doctrine: Anointing and Spirit-Taught Discernment — High — 1 John 2:20; 2:27 — Must stay tied to ordinary believers’ doctrinal discernment, never reframed as an elite shamanistic spirit-power (영력) display, per the baseline’s Critical “power_of_god” warning. — Human theologian review.

2:24–29 — Abiding, Confidence, New Birth (introduced) Abiding in what was heard from the beginning; confidence at Christ’s coming; the first mention that “everyone who practices righteousness is born of him.”

  • Doctrine: Boldness and Confidence before God (introduced) — High — 1 John 2:28 — Confidence at Christ’s return, not shame, grounded in Christ’s finished work. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: New Birth and Regeneration (introduced) — Critical — 1 John 2:29 — First occurrence of “born of him”; must never use 환생/윤회. — Human theologian review.

Chapter 2 summary: introduces/develops Advocate, Propitiation, Commandment to Love, Walking in Light, Overcoming the World, Antichrist, Truth vs Deception, Anointing, Boldness, New Birth. Fully reviewed.

1 John 3:1–24 — Children of God, Sinlessness of the New Nature, Love vs. Hate, Practical Love

3:1–3 — Children of God, Hope of Christlikeness The Father’s love is the ground of being called “children of God”; future hope of full Christlikeness at his appearing.

  • Doctrine: Children of God versus Children of the Devil (introduced) — High — 1 John 3:1-2 — 하나님의 자녀 must be relational family belonging, not the instrumental ancestor-rite-continuation purpose of traditional Korean heir-adoption (제사). — Human theologian review.

3:4–10 — Sin, Lawlessness, New Birth, Children of God vs. of the Devil Sin is defined as lawlessness (ἀνομία); the regenerate cannot go on sinning as a settled practice because of God’s abiding “seed”; the stark antithesis between children of God and children of the devil is drawn.

  • Doctrine: New Birth and Regeneration (developed) — Critical — 1 John 3:9 — “God’s seed” (하나님의 씨) must not be read as a magical/talisman-like substance; this is the Spirit-given new nature, evidenced by not practicing sin as a settled pattern. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Children of God versus Children of the Devil (developed) — High — 1 John 3:8-10 — The binary must be preserved without softening into a spectrum, and without importing folk-religious generational-curse/ancestral-affliction causation categories. — Human theologian review.

3:10–17 — Love for the Brethren as Evidence; Hatred as Evidence of Death; Practical Love Cain as the negative type; hatred equated with murder; love proven concretely by material generosity toward a brother in need, following Christ’s self-giving pattern.

  • Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth — Critical — 1 John 3:10-17; 4:7-8; 4:20-21; 5:1-2 — Ties the letter’s two most collision-prone terms (사랑, 하나님께로부터 난 자) into a single assurance test; must be willed, self-giving, Christ-defined love, not romantic 사랑, family-loyalty 정, or Confucian hierarchical benevolence (인). — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Hatred as Evidence of Spiritual Death — High — 1 John 3:14-15 — The stark binary (love=life, hate=death/murder) must not be softened into a spectrum, nor confused with folk generational-curse categories. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Practical Love in Deed and Truth — Medium — 1 John 3:16-18 — Concrete material generosity as evidence of love, following Christ’s pattern, not generic Confucian benevolence (인) for social harmony/체면. — Native speaker review.

3:18–24 — Confidence of Heart, Commandment, Abiding, Holy Spirit Assurance when the heart condemns; keeping God’s commandments (belief in Christ’s name plus mutual love) as the ground of abiding, confirmed by the Spirit given to us.

  • Doctrine: Boldness and Confidence before God (developed) — High — 1 John 3:19-21 — “If our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart” — comfort must rest on God’s objective gracious verdict, not mere self-forgiveness psychology, though pastorally relevant to Korean 체면-sensitivity. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: The Commandment to Love and Obedience of Faith (developed) — High — 1 John 3:22-24 — Obedience as grace-responsive, not merit-earning or hierarchical-compliance (cf. baseline “obedience_of_faith” three-obediences caution). — Human theologian review.

Chapter 3 summary: introduces/develops Children of God vs. Children of the Devil, New Birth, Love for the Brethren, Hatred as Evidence of Death, Practical Love, Boldness/Confidence, Commandment to Love. Fully reviewed.

1 John 4:1–21 — Testing the Spirits, Incarnation, God is Love, Propitiation, Love for the Brethren, Confidence (CORE PASSAGE)

4:1–6 — Testing the Spirits; Incarnation; Truth vs. Error The doctrinal test for distinguishing the Spirit of God from the spirit of antichrist: confessing that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.

  • Doctrine: Testing the Spirits — Critical — 1 John 4:1-6 — This vocabulary sits directly atop the live Korean shamanistic practice of 영분별/접신 (a mudang’s own claimed specialty); must always be paired with the sole doctrinal test of 4:2-3, never taught as a general spiritual-sensing ability. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Incarnation of Christ (developed) — Critical — 1 John 4:2-3 — The confession “Jesus Christ has come in the flesh” must never be softened toward 화신 (a provisional, repeatable Buddhist avatar-manifestation); insists on one real, complete, undivided incarnate life. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Antichrist and False Teaching (reinforced) — Critical — 1 John 4:3 — The spirit that denies this confession is “the spirit of the antichrist,” already at work — reinforcing the live-movement warning from 2:18-23. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Truth versus Deception (developed) — High — 1 John 4:6 — “Spirit of truth” and “spirit of error” (미혹의 영/진리의 영) as the doctrinal source distinguishing true from false teaching. — Human theologian review.

4:7–21 — CORE PASSAGE: God is Love, Propitiation, Love for the Brethren, Confidence before God This is the theological anchor of the curriculum. God’s own nature (“God is love,” 4:8,16) is revealed and defined by his initiating, atoning love in sending his Son as propitiation (4:9-10); this love is the ground and pattern for love of the brethren (4:11-12, 19-21), for the mutual-abiding/Holy-Spirit-confirmed relationship (4:13-16), and for confident boldness at the day of judgment, since perfected love casts out fear (4:17-18).

  • Doctrine: God is Love — Critical — 1 John 4:8; 4:16; 4:7; 4:9-10 — Korean 사랑 spans romantic/filial/biblical senses without lexical distinction, and 정 (jeong) offers a further non-equivalent collision; must never be taught in reversible form (“love is therefore God”), which would resonate with Cheondogyo’s 인내천. Christ’s atoning death (4:10) must anchor the definition. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Propitiation and Atoning Sacrifice (core occurrence) — Critical — 1 John 4:10 — God himself provides and initiates the 화목제물 out of prior love — the reverse of the shamanistic/jesa pattern of appeasing an unpredictable power. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (core occurrence) — Critical — 1 John 4:7-8; 4:11-12; 4:19-21 — “Everyone who loves has been born of God”; “we love because he first loved us” (4:19) — must retain non-transactional priority and Christ-defined content of love. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Deity and Sonship of Christ (developed) — Critical — 1 John 4:9; 4:15 — “Only-begotten Son” (독생자) sent into the world; must retain eternal, unique, co-equal divine Sonship, never assimilated to the Dangun/Hwanung founding-myth pattern nor to any human “second Christ” claimant. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Boldness and Confidence before God (core occurrence) — High — 1 John 4:17-18 — Confidence at the day of judgment because “as he is, so are we in this world”; perfected love casting out 두려움 (fear) must be grounded in Christ’s atoning work, not personal spiritual power or unresolved 기복신앙-style reassurance-seeking. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Day of Judgment Confidence — Medium — 1 John 4:17 — The “day of judgment” (심판 날) must be a personal divine tribunal, not an impersonal karmic reckoning. — Native speaker review.
  • Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another (core reinforcement) — Medium — 1 John 4:12-13 — Mutual abiding (“God abides in us… by his Spirit”) ties vertical and horizontal fellowship together at the letter’s theological center. — Native speaker review.

Chapter 4 summary: introduces/develops Testing the Spirits, Incarnation, Antichrist, Truth vs. Error, and carries the letter’s core doctrinal cluster — God is Love, Propitiation, Love for the Brethren, Deity/Sonship of Christ, Boldness/Confidence, Day of Judgment, Fellowship. Fully reviewed; this is the theological anchor chapter.

1 John 5:1–21 — New Birth, Faith Overcoming the World, Threefold Witness, Assurance, Sin unto Death, Idolatry

5:1–5 — New Birth, Love, Commandment-Keeping, Overcoming the World Faith that Jesus is the Christ is the mark of new birth; this birth produces love for God’s other children and glad commandment-keeping; faith itself is the means of victory over the world.

  • Doctrine: New Birth and Regeneration (developed) — Critical — 1 John 5:1; 5:4; 5:18 — “Everyone who believes… has been born of God”; must retain personal, non-repeating, once-for-all spiritual birth, never 환생/윤회. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Overcoming the World through Faith (developed) — High — 1 John 5:4-5 — “This is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith”; victory secured through faith Jesus is the Son of God, not ritual technique (contrast 부적/액막이). — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: The Commandment to Love and Obedience of Faith (developed) — High — 1 John 5:2-3 — “His commandments are not burdensome” — grace-responsive obedience, not meritorious burden. — Human theologian review.

5:6–13 — Threefold Witness, Deity/Sonship of Christ, Assurance of Eternal Life The Spirit, water, and blood testify together to the true, complete incarnation and death of Jesus; the letter’s stated purpose is stated directly: “that you may know that you have eternal life.”

  • Doctrine: Threefold Witness and the Reality of the Incarnation — High — 1 John 5:6-8 — Must retain a real, complete, undivided human life and death, not a partial/symbolic incarnation comparable to 화신. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Deity and Sonship of Christ (developed) — Critical — 1 John 5:5; 5:9-13; 5:20 — “He who has the Son has life” — 독생자 must always accompany 하나님의 아들 to preserve absolute uniqueness against any human “second Christ” claimant. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life — Critical — 1 John 5:11-13; 5:20 — 영생 must be distinguished from Daoist/folk 불로장생, 신선 immortal-sage ideals, and Buddhist 극락왕생; a present, knowable relational possession by faith, not a merit/ritual-maintained future state. — Human theologian review.

5:14–17 — Boldness in Prayer; Sin unto Death Confidence that God hears prayer according to his will; guidance on intercessory prayer for a brother’s sin, with the difficult exception of “sin that leads to death.”

  • Doctrine: Boldness and Confidence before God (developed) — High — 1 John 5:14 — Confidence in prayer grounded in Christ’s work, not achievement or ritual formula. — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Sin unto Death and Intercessory Prayer — High — 1 John 5:16-17 — Requires careful pastoral framing to avoid inducing anxious uncertainty (compounded by Korean 체면/shame-sensitivity) while preserving the serious warning about decisive, unrepentant apostasy. — Human theologian review.

5:18–21 — Summary Assurances; True God; Idols Three summary “we know” assurances; the closing identification of Jesus Christ as “the true God and eternal life”; the final one-line command to “keep yourselves from idols.”

  • Doctrine: New Birth and Regeneration (summary) — Critical — 1 John 5:18 — “No one born of God keeps on sinning… he who was born of God protects him.” — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Deity and Sonship of Christ (summary) — Critical — 1 John 5:20 — “This is the true God and eternal life” — full monotheistic exclusivity, never softened toward “one true reality among several valid paths.” — Human theologian review.
  • Doctrine: Idolatry and Exclusive Devotion to God — High — 1 John 5:21 — Continues the baseline “father”/jesa collision (ancestor spirit-tablets 신주/위패) and “church” contrast with shamanistic shrines (당집) and Buddhist temple images (불상); the letter’s closing exhortation, taught with this full concrete Korean cultural range in view. — Human theologian review.

Chapter 5 summary: develops New Birth, Overcoming the World, Commandment-Keeping, Threefold Witness, Deity/Sonship of Christ, Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life, Boldness in Prayer, Sin unto Death, and closes with Idolatry. Fully reviewed.

Cross-Reference Notes

  1. This matrix is doctrine-organized; analysis/08_core_glossary.md is term-organized. The two must remain mutually consistent — every Critical/High doctrine above is carried by one or more Critical/High terms already risk-tiered in the glossary (e.g., “God is Love” carries 사랑/화목제물; “Testing the Spirits” carries 영들을 시험하라/미혹의 영/진리의 영).
  2. The core passage, 1 John 4:7-21, carries five of the nine Critical doctrines simultaneously (God is Love, Propitiation, Love for the Brethren, Deity/Sonship of Christ, and — at High tier — Boldness/Confidence and Day of Judgment). Phase 2 segment processing of this passage must route every segment to human theologian review without exception.
  3. All chapters (1–5) have been walked through above in full; no chapter contributes doctrinal content that falls outside the 29 doctrines listed. Chapters 1 and 5 additionally bookend the letter’s testimony/assurance structure (Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony opening; Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life and Idolatry closing).

Critical Risk Doctrines

God is Love

Korean name: 하나님은 사랑이심
Key terms: love, God is love, propitiation
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: Korean 사랑 spans romantic, filial, and biblical senses without lexical distinction, and 정 (jeong) offers a further non-equivalent relational-attachment collision. Must never be taught in reversible form (‘love is therefore God’), a pantheistic collapse that would resonate with Cheondogyo’s 인내천 (‘man is heaven’) and generic ‘the universe is love’ popular spirituality. Christ’s atoning death (4:10) must always anchor and control the definition of this love.

New Birth and Regeneration

Korean name: 거듭남과 중생
Key terms: born of God, God’s seed, children of God
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: NEVER 환생 (Buddhist rebirth) or 윤회 (the reincarnation cycle) — same forbidden-substitution logic as the baseline’s ‘resurrection’ entry. New birth is a personal, non-repeating, once-for-all spiritual birth into permanent sonship, evidenced by ongoing righteousness and love, not a cyclical rebirth into a new existence.

Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth

Korean name: 형제 사랑은 거듭남의 증거
Key terms: love, born of God, brother, hate
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: this doctrine ties the letter’s two most collision-prone terms (사랑 and 하나님께로부터 난 자) into a single assurance test. Must be taught as willed, self-giving, Christ-defined love proving genuine new birth — not romantic 사랑, mere family-loyalty 정, or Confucian hierarchical benevolence (인) displayed toward socially proper relations only.

Incarnation of Christ

Korean name: 그리스도의 성육신
Key terms: confess (doctrine), threefold witness, blood of Jesus
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: the confession that ‘Jesus Christ has come in the flesh’ (4:2) must never be softened toward 화신 (a Buddhist avatar/incarnation-of-a-buddha concept describing a provisional, repeatable manifestation). 1 John insists on one real, complete, undivided incarnate life and death (the threefold witness of Spirit, water, and blood, 5:6-8), directly opposing docetic-style denial.

Antichrist and False Teaching

Korean name: 적그리스도와 거짓 교훈
Key terms: antichrist, confess (doctrine), spirit of error, liar
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: Korea has produced multiple influential, still-active new religious movements built around a living human figure claiming unique messianic or second-coming status (통일교/Unification Church, 기독교복음선교회/JMS, 신천지/Shincheonji) — a documented, ongoing real-world instance of exactly the denial-of-Christ pattern 1 John addresses, not a hypothetical or purely historical-critical concern.

Deity and Sonship of Christ

Korean name: 그리스도의 신성과 아들 되심
Key terms: son of God, only-begotten son, true God
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: must retain Christ’s eternal, unique, co-equal divine Sonship, never assimilated to Korea’s Dangun/Hwanung founding-myth pattern (a heaven-descended founder-son) nor to any claimed human ‘second Christ’ figure in Korean new religious movements. 독생자 (‘only-begotten’) must always accompany 하나님의 아들 to preserve absolute uniqueness.

Propitiation and Atoning Sacrifice

Korean name: 화목제물과 속죄
Key terms: propitiation, blood of Jesus, advocate
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 화목제물 collides directly with Korean shamanistic gut-ritual offering-to-appease-spirits (제물) and Confucian jesa ancestor food-offerings (제사). Must always be taught with the reversal these folk patterns lack: God himself provides and initiates the sacrifice out of his own prior love (4:10a) — not humans offering a sacrifice to appease an unpredictable spiritual power. Same collision family as the baseline’s Critical ‘grace’ entry.

Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life

Korean name: 구원과 영생의 확신
Key terms: eternal life, born of God, boldness, testify
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: 영생 must be distinguished from the Daoist/folk 불로장생 (‘deathless long life’) and 신선 (immortal-sage) ideal, and from Buddhist 극락왕생 (Pure-Land rebirth through merit). The letter’s stated purpose (5:13, ‘that you may know you have eternal life’) must be taught as a present, knowable relational possession by faith, not a hoped-for future state pursued through cultivation, merit, or ongoing ritual maintenance akin to 기복신앙.

Testing the Spirits

Korean name: 영을 분별함
Key terms: test the spirits, spirit of error, spirit of truth, antichrist
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: this vocabulary sits directly atop a live Korean shamanistic practice — 영분별 (‘spirit discernment’) and 접신 (‘spirit-contact/possession’) are the mudang’s own claimed specialty during divination or gut ritual. Must always be paired with the sole doctrinal test of 4:2-3 (confessing Jesus Christ come in the flesh), never taught as a general spiritual-sensing ability to be developed or exercised.

High Risk Doctrines

God is Light

Korean name: 하나님은 빛이심
Key terms: light, darkness, walk
Review routing: Human theologian

빛/어둠 risk colliding with Won Buddhism’s 일원상 (Il-Won-Sang) cosmic-light symbol for the Dharmakaya Buddha and Cheondogyo’s 인내천 indwelling-divine-light teaching, plus shamanistic ritual candlelight in gut ceremonies. Must be taught as the personal, morally perfect, self-revealing character of the one true God, not an impersonal illumination-principle or indwelling universal divinity.

Confession and Forgiveness of Sin

Korean name: 죄의 자백과 용서
Key terms: confess (sin), sin, cleanse
Review routing: Human theologian

1:9’s direct, unmediated confession to God must be kept distinct from (a) Catholic sacramental confession requiring a priest-mediator (고해성사) and (b) a mudang’s ritual mediating role for spiritual offenses during a gut ceremony. Must use 자백하다 (moral confession), never 시인하다 (doctrinal confession, reserved for 4:2-3,15).

Cleansing from Sin by the Blood of Christ

Korean name: 그리스도의 피로 말미암은 죄 씻음
Key terms: blood of Jesus, cleanse, sin
Review routing: Human theologian

깨끗하게 하다 must be distinguished from shamanistic ritual purification (부정을 씻음, removing ritual impurity/misfortune in a gut ceremony); Christ’s blood cleanses the moral guilt of sin before a holy God, once for all, not repeatable ritual pollution-removal.

Universal Sinfulness and Self-Deception

Korean name: 모든 사람의 죄와 자기 기만
Key terms: sin, liar, confess (sin)
Review routing: Human theologian

Claiming sinlessness is exposed as self-deception and making God a liar (거짓말하는 자); must be taught as moral self-honesty before a personal God, not merely a loss of 체면 (social face) to be managed through denial or minimization.

Hatred as Evidence of Spiritual Death

Korean name: 미움은 영적 죽음의 증거
Key terms: hate, children of the devil, liar
Review routing: Human theologian

The stark binary (love=life, hate=death/murder) must be preserved without softening into a spectrum; must not be confused with folk-religious generational-curse/ancestral-affliction causation categories sometimes imported into Korean quasi-Christian folk belief — the diagnosis here is present moral allegiance, not inherited spiritual affliction.

Advocate and Intercession of Christ

Korean name: 그리스도의 대언과 중보
Key terms: advocate, propitiation
Review routing: Human theologian

대언자 must not be read as a mudang’s ritual mediation between the living and an unpredictable offended spirit during a gut ceremony; Christ’s advocacy is a settled, righteous legal defense secured once for all by his finished atoning work, requiring no ongoing ritual renewal.

Overcoming the World through Faith

Korean name: 믿음으로 세상을 이김
Key terms: overcome the world, world, faith
Review routing: Human theologian

Must be distinguished from Korean folk practices of warding off misfortune or malevolent spirits through 부적 (talismans) and 액막이 (ritual warding-off); biblical victory is a settled reality secured entirely through faith that Jesus is the Son of God, not a ritual technique requiring repeated renewal.

Anointing and Spirit-Taught Discernment

Korean name: 기름부으심과 성령의 가르치심
Key terms: anointing, spirit of truth, abide
Review routing: Human theologian

Korean Pentecostal/charismatic practice (안수기도, 기름부음) uses ‘anointing’ language extensively; must stay tied to ordinary believers’ doctrinal discernment of truth from antichrist error, never reframed as an elite shamanistic spirit-power (영력) display, per the baseline’s Critical ‘power_of_god’ warning.

The Commandment to Love and Obedience of Faith

Korean name: 사랑의 계명과 믿음의 순종
Key terms: commandment, love, obligation, new commandment, old commandment
Review routing: Human theologian

계명 must flow from grace-given relationship already established by God’s prior love (4:19), not function as an independent meritorious code, and must not be assimilated to Confucian ritual-propriety (예) or filial-duty (효) hierarchical obligation codes, nor to the ‘three obediences’ hierarchical-compliance pattern flagged in the baseline’s ‘obedience_of_faith’ entry.

Children of God versus Children of the Devil

Korean name: 하나님의 자녀와 마귀의 자녀
Key terms: children of God, children of the devil, God’s seed, lawlessness
Review routing: Human theologian

The letter’s binary spiritual-parentage anthropology must be preserved without softening into a spectrum of partial belonging; 하나님의 자녀 must be taught as relational family belonging (not the instrumental, ancestor-rite-continuation purpose of traditional Korean heir-adoption, 제사), and 하나님의 씨 must not be read as a magical talisman-like substance.

Sin unto Death and Intercessory Prayer

Korean name: 사망에 이르는 죄와 중보 기도
Key terms: sin unto death, sin
Review routing: Human theologian

Requires careful pastoral framing to avoid inducing anxious uncertainty about having committed an unforgivable sin, a risk compounded by Korean culture’s strong 체면 (face/shame) sensitivity, while preserving the letter’s serious warning about decisive, unrepentant apostasy from the true Christ.

Idolatry and Exclusive Devotion to God

Korean name: 우상과 하나님께 대한 전적 헌신
Key terms: idols, true God
Review routing: Human theologian

Directly continues the baseline ‘father’ entry’s jesa/ancestor-rite historical collision (ancestor spirit-tablets 신주/위패) and the baseline ‘church’ entry’s contrast with shamanistic shrines (당집) and Buddhist temple images (불상); must be taught with this full concrete Korean cultural range in view as the letter’s closing exhortation, not as a merely ancient or abstract warning.

The Threefold Witness and the Reality of the Incarnation

Korean name: 삼중 증거와 성육신의 실재성
Key terms: threefold witness, testify, confess (doctrine)
Review routing: Human theologian

The Spirit’s, water’s, and blood’s combined testimony that the same Jesus was truly baptized and truly died must retain a real, complete, undivided human life and death, not a partial or symbolic incarnation comparable to a Buddhist 화신 (provisional avatar-manifestation).

Boldness and Confidence before God

Korean name: 하나님 앞에서의 담대함
Key terms: boldness, confidence of heart, day of judgment
Review routing: Human theologian

담대함 must be distinguished from generic secular self-confidence (자신감) and from a shaman’s ritual boldness in confronting spirits; grounded entirely in Christ’s atoning work and God’s greater verdict over the heart, not personal spiritual power, achievement, or the never-fully-resolved reassurance-seeking of 기복신앙 practice.

Walking in the Light versus Darkness

Korean name: 빛 가운데 행함과 어둠 가운데 행함
Key terms: light, darkness, walk, fellowship
Review routing: Human theologian

The ethical ‘walk’ in light/darkness must be taught as an ongoing pattern of moral/relational life before a personal God, not a single ritual act; must avoid conflation with the light-symbolism collisions documented under ‘god_is_light’ (일원상, 인내천) when applied to the believer’s own conduct.

Truth versus Deception

Korean name: 진리와 미혹
Key terms: truth, spirit of error, spirit of truth, liar
Review routing: Human theologian

진리 must be distinguished from a generic philosophical-relativistic ‘my truth,’ from Confucian moral-Way (道, 도), and from Buddhist true-nature concepts; this is God’s own revealed, personal, exclusive truth in Christ, discerned by the Spirit of truth against the spirit of error (4:6).

Medium Risk Doctrines

Fellowship with God and One Another

Korean name: 하나님과 서로와의 교제
Key terms: fellowship, walk, light
Review routing: Native speaker review

1 John distinctively pairs vertical fellowship (with the Father and Son) and horizontal fellowship (with one another) as inseparable; 교제 itself is low-collision, but teaching must preserve this double structure so that fellowship is not reduced to mere social camaraderie apart from walking in the light with God.

Confidence at the Day of Judgment

Korean name: 심판 날의 확신
Key terms: day of judgment, boldness, parousia
Review routing: Native speaker review

Ensure the ‘day of judgment’ and Christ’s ‘coming’ (parousia) are read as a personal divine tribunal and a personal, visible, historical return, not an impersonal karmic reckoning or a symbolic ‘spiritual’ return as claimed by some Korean new religious movements.

Practical Love in Deed and Truth

Korean name: 행함과 진실함으로 하는 사랑
Key terms: love, obligation, brother
Review routing: Native speaker review

Concrete material generosity toward a brother in need must be taught as evidence of Christ-defined love (following his self-giving pattern, 3:16), not conflated with generic Confucian benevolence (인) displayed to maintain social harmony or reputation (체면).

Low Risk Doctrines

Apostolic Eyewitness Testimony

Korean name: 사도적 증언
Key terms: testify, manifested
Review routing: Automated review

The letter’s opening eyewitness testimony (‘heard, seen, looked upon, touched’) establishes historical, apostolic authority for what follows; low collision risk, minor care needed to retain its authoritative, non-mystical testimonial tone.
