What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: Colossians (Koine Greek → Korean)

Methodology and Scope

This document analyzes every chapter of Colossians (1–4) in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, Colossians 1:15–20 (the “Christ Hymn”), receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing theological terms using the same analytical fields. No chapter is silently skipped; each chapter’s coverage is stated explicitly, including where a term repeats material already covered.

Fields applied to every term:

  1. Original — Greek word/phrase (with transliteration)
  2. Literal meaning
  3. Semantic range
  4. English variants (as seen across major English translations)
  5. Contextual theological meaning (in Colossians specifically)
  6. Korean destination-language rendering & risk notes

Baseline compliance: Wherever a term already exists in the Romans translation_memory.json, that exact Korean rendering is reused and marked [TM REUSE]. New terms proposed for the Colossians package are marked [NEW] and carry a proposed risk tier consistent with the baseline’s Critical/High/Medium/Low framework.

Cultural risk lenses applied throughout (per baseline convention): Korean shamanism (무속신앙) — spirit-hierarchy, ritual debt-appeasement (해원), spirit-power (영력), ritual purification; Confucian filial/hierarchical ethics (효, 삼종지도, 제사 ancestor rites); Korean Buddhism (해탈, 윤회, 화신, 깨달음, 지혜 as prajña); Korea’s 기복신앙 (“fortune-seeking faith”) critique already central to the Romans baseline; and the contemporary Korean phenomenon of indigenous new religious movements/cult groups (e.g., groups claiming secret/tiered spiritual “perfection” or exclusive hidden revelation), which is a live pastoral concern distinct from, but related to, the historical mystery-religion background of Colossians itself.

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: Colossians 1:15–20 (Verse-by-Verse)

Colossians 1:15

Greek: ὅς ἐστιν εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἀοράτου, πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως

TermLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKorean Rendering & Risk
εἰκών (eikōn)image, likeness, visible representationa copy/reflection that makes an invisible original visible; used of coins bearing an emperor’s image, of idol-statues, and (in Paul) of humanity/Christ reflecting God”image,” “likeness,” “exact representation”Christ is the perfect, visible manifestation of the invisible God — not a symbolic or partial likeness but the very disclosure of God’s own being형상 (hyeongsang) — [NEW, High risk]. KRV-standard term (“하나님의 형상”). Risk: (1) 형상/우상 (usang, idol) collision — Korean shamanistic and folk-Buddhist practice reveres physical images/statues (신상, 불상) as loci of spiritual power; 형상 here must be taught as Christ’s own being disclosing God, never an object of veneration in itself. (2) Confucian ancestor-portrait veneration (영정, yeongjeong, used in 제사 rites) offers a further collision point already flagged under “Father” in the Romans baseline — 형상 must not be assimilated to a venerated ancestral likeness.
ἀόρατος (aoratos)not able to be seen, invisibleGod’s essential nature, unseen by physical sight”invisible”Establishes the theological problem eikōn solves: God cannot be seen, yet is made known fully in Christ보이지 아니하는 (boiji anihaneun) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk]. Descriptive phrase, not a technical noun; low collision risk.
πρωτότοκος (prōtotokos)firstborn (of birth order or rank/preeminence)in Greek usage can denote (a) chronological first birth, or (b) legal/social preeminence and inheritance-rank regardless of birth order (cf. LXX use for Israel as God’s “firstborn” among nations, not first “created”)“firstborn,” “firstborn over,” “supreme heir”Christ’s rank and title over creation as its sovereign heir and source — NOT that Christ is the first created being먼저 나신 이 (meonjeo nasin i) — [NEW, Critical risk]. KRV renders the full phrase as “모든 피조물보다 먼저 나신 이” (“the one born/begotten before all creation”) rather than a bare noun, precisely to avoid the reading “the first thing created.” CRITICAL because: this is the single most theologically exploited verse of Colossians by Jehovah’s Witnesses and JW-adjacent groups (including Korean-language JW literature, e.g. the New World Translation’s rendering strategies), who argue Christ is himself the first created being. Korea has an active JW presence, making this a live, not merely historical, mistranslation risk. Rendering MUST preserve the rank/preeminence sense (Christ as sovereign heir over creation, existing before and outside of it) and must never be simplified to a noun implying Christ belongs to the class of “created things.”
κτίσις (ktisis)creation, created thing/creaturethe sum of what God has made; can mean the act of creating or its product”creation,” “creature,” “created things”All of created reality, without exception, over which Christ holds supreme rank피조물 (pijomul) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Standard term. Care needed only to keep πᾶσα κτίσις (“all creation”) from being read as Christ being included within the category, given the πρωτότοκος risk above.

Colossians 1:16

TermLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKorean Rendering & Risk
ἐκτίσθη / κτίζω (ektisthē / ktizō)was created, to createto bring into being out of nothing; exclusively a divine action in biblical usage”was created,” “were made”v.16 explains and grounds v.15: Christ cannot be a creature because he is explicitly the agent, sphere, and goal of all creation창조되다 (changjodoeda) — [NEW, Critical risk]. Must retain the triple ἐν αὐτῷ / δι’ αὐτοῦ / εἰς αὐτὸν (in him / through him / to him) structure — Christ as the sphere, agent, and goal of creation — since this triple preposition structure is precisely what refutes any “Christ is a creature” reading. Translators must not compress or drop any of the three prepositional phrases.
τὰ πάντα (ta panta)all things, the totalitycomprehensive, all-encompassing; used repeatedly (5 times) in vv.16-20 as the passage’s structural keyword”all things,” “everything,” “the whole universe”The totality of creation and of redemption both fall under Christ’s supremacy; this repeated phrase is the passage’s rhetorical backbone만물 (mulmul → 만물, manmul) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Standard comprehensive term. Translators must preserve consistent rendering across all five occurrences (vv.16 x2, 17, 20) to retain the hymn’s deliberate repetition.
θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι (thronoi, kyriotētes, archai, exousiai)thrones, lordships/dominions, rulers/first-ones, authoritiesa stock list (also in Eph 1:21, 1 Pet 3:22) denoting ranked classes of spiritual/angelic powers, likely reflecting categories venerated or feared in the Colossian syncretistic milieu”thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities,” “powers,” “principalities”Every conceivable rank of spirit-power, whether benevolent or hostile, was created by and is subject to Christ — directly undercutting any teaching (then or now) that these powers require separate appeasement, worship, or mediation보좌, 주관, 통치자, 권세 (bojwa, jugwan, tongchija, gwonse) — [NEW, High risk]. KRV’s four-term list. Risk: Korean shamanism (무속신앙) operates a populated, ranked spirit-world (조상신, 산신, 잡신, and various guardian/territorial spirits) that a mudang addresses, placates, or channels in a gut ritual. This vocabulary risks being read as simply naming additional members of that same functional spirit-hierarchy rather than as categories entirely subordinate to and created by Christ. Teaching must make explicit: these powers (however named or conceived) are Christ’s creatures, already defeated and disarmed (cf. 2:15), never objects of veneration, negotiation, or fear for the believer.

Colossians 1:17

Greek: καὶ αὐτός ἐστιν πρὸ πάντων καὶ τὰ πάντα ἐν αὐτῷ συνέστηκεν

TermLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKorean Rendering & Risk
πρὸ πάντων (pro pantōn)before all thingstemporal and/or rank priority — exists prior to, and is superior in rank to, everything”before all things,” “before all else”Christ’s eternal pre-existence, again ruling out any creaturely status만물보다 먼저 계시고 (manmul-boda meonjeo gyesigo) — [NEW, Critical risk]. Must retain temporal priority (Christ already existing “before” creation, not merely “above” it in rank only), reinforcing the πρωτότοκος clarification in v.15.
συνέστηκεν (synestēken, from συνίστημι)holds together, coheres, is constitutedto be composed of, cohere, hang together as a unified whole; a term also used in Stoic cosmology for the principle unifying the universe”hold together,” “consist,” “cohere,” “are sustained”Christ is not only creation’s originator but its ongoing sustaining cause — the universe does not run on its own momentum but is continuously upheld by him함께 서다 / 그 안에 함께 섰느니라 (hamkke seoda) — [NEW, Medium-High risk]. KRV: “만물이 그 안에 함께 섰느니라.” Care is needed to convey active, ongoing sustaining causation (not a one-time past act only), and to avoid any reading that reduces this to an impersonal cosmic-order principle akin to the Confucian/Daoist 이(理, principle) or 도(道, the Way) that orders the universe apart from a personal agent. Christ’s sustaining of “all things” is personal, purposive governance — conceptually resonant with, but doctrinally distinct from, the 섭리 (providence) entry already flagged High risk in the Romans baseline (there, of God’s care for believers; here, of Christ’s cosmic sustaining power).

Colossians 1:18

TermLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKorean Rendering & Risk
κεφαλή (kephalē)head (of a body); by extension, source, ruler, authority-bearerthe literal physical head; metaphorically, the source/origin of life for a body, and/or its ruling authority”head,” “head over,” “authority over”The hinge of the whole hymn: having established Christ’s supremacy over the old creation (vv.15-17), Paul now establishes his supremacy over the new creation/church (vv.18-20) — Christ is the church’s life-source and ruling authority머리 (meori) — [NEW, High risk]. Not present in the Romans baseline (Romans does not use this headship image for Christ/church; it is central to Colossians and Ephesians). Risk: Korean has a strong existing cultural frame for “head” as family/clan patriarchal authority (가장, gajang, the male head-of-household under Confucian family structure), which is a genuine partial resonance (headship does involve authority) but must not be reduced to mere hierarchical authority without also conveying the organic life-source sense (the head as that from which the body draws its life, cf. 2:19’s “holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body… grows”). Must be distinguished from a merely administrative or authoritarian “boss” relationship.
σῶμα (sōma)bodya physical body; metaphorically, an organic corporate unity”body”The church as Christ’s organic body, dependent on him as its head for life and growth몸 (mom) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Standard term; risk is low but must be kept paired consistently with 머리 to preserve the head-body organic metaphor across Colossians (also 2:19, 3:15).
ἐκκλησία (ekklēsia)assembly, called-out gatheringthe covenant community of believers”church”Here specifically the body of which Christ is head — a universal, not merely local, sense in this verse교회 (gyohoe) [TM REUSE — Medium risk per baseline]. Reused exactly from Romans baseline; no new risk introduced, though note Colossians uses ἐκκλησία in both the universal (1:18, 1:24) and local/house-church (4:15-16) senses — flag which sense is active per occurrence.
ἀρχή (archē)beginning, origin, first-principle, sourcethe point of origin; can also mean “ruler” (as in ἀρχαί, v.16) — a deliberate wordplay within the hymn”the beginning,” “the source,” “first,” “origin”Christ as the originating source of the new creation (resurrection life), paralleling his role as source of the old creation (v.16-17)근본 (geunbon) — [NEW, Medium risk]. KRV: “그가 근본이시요.” Distinguish carefully in teaching from ἀρχαί (“rulers,” v.16, rendered 통치자) — same Greek root, different referent (Christ as originating source vs. created ruling powers); a footnote distinguishing the two is recommended wherever both terms appear near each other.
πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν (prōtotokos ek tōn nekrōn)firstborn from/out of the deadthe first to rise bodily to permanent resurrection life, and thereby also the source and guarantee of others’ future resurrection”firstborn from the dead,” “first to rise from death”Christ’s bodily resurrection inaugurates and guarantees the resurrection of all who are united to him — parallels his role as πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως in v.15죽은 자들 가운데서 먼저 나신 이 (jugeun jadeul gaunde-seo meonjeo nasin i) — [reuses 부활 concept, TM REUSE for 부활/buhwal underlying doctrine — High risk]. Must retain the “firstborn” (preeminence + source of others’ resurrection) sense, not a bare “first one who happened to rise.” Per the Romans baseline’s Critical forbidden-substitution rule, resurrection language here must never be rendered with 환생 (rebirth) or 윤회 (reincarnation cycle) vocabulary.
πρωτεύων (prōteuōn)being first, holding first place, being preeminentto hold the highest rank in a list or hierarchy”have first place,” “be preeminent,” “be supreme”The stated purpose (ἵνα) of Christ’s resurrection: that he might hold unrivaled preeminence “in everything” — the hymn’s climactic thesis statement으뜸이 되다 (eutteum-i doeda) — [NEW, Medium-High risk]. KRV: “친히 만물의 으뜸이 되려 하심이요.” Must convey unqualified, comprehensive supremacy (“in everything,” ἐν πᾶσιν), not merely “one of the foremost” — risk of softening into a status/rank claim comparable to Korea’s status-and-achievement-conscious social vocabulary (cf. 출세, chulse, career/social success, already flagged under “glory” in the Romans baseline) rather than absolute, singular supremacy.

Colossians 1:19

Greek: ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ εὐδόκησεν πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα κατοικῆσαι

TermLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKorean Rendering & Risk
εὐδόκησεν (eudokēsen)was pleased, was well-pleased, resolved/determined with pleasureGod’s sovereign, gracious good pleasure/decision”was pleased,” “was please to,” “God determined”The Father’s sovereign will and pleasure is the ground of Christ’s fullness — this is not something Christ acquired or achieved but what the Father was pleased to place in him기뻐하시다 (gippeohasida) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Subject is God the Father (implied); honorific verb form required per the baseline’s nopimmal grammar rule for reference to God.
πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα (pan to plērōma)all the fullness, the whole fullnessthe complete totality of something — in Colossians, of divine being/essence (clarified explicitly as θεότης in 2:9)“all the fullness,” “the full measure,” “the complete fullness of deity”God’s entire fullness of being, not a fragment or portion, permanently resides in Christ — directly answering any teaching (ancient or modern) that divine fullness is distributed piecemeal among various intermediary powers, aeons, or spirit-beings모든 충만 (modeun chungman) — [NEW, Critical risk]. KRV: “아버지께서는 모든 충만으로 예수 안에 거하게 하시고” (v.19 combined with v.20 in KRV verse division in some printings — check verse numbering against the specific KRV edition used). This is the seed of the doctrine made explicit in 2:9 (πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς). Critical because: the Colossian false teaching Paul opposes apparently held that divine fullness (pleroma) was distributed among many intermediate spiritual powers (echoing the θρόνοι/κυριότητες/ἀρχαί/ἐξουσίαι list of v.16) rather than residing completely in Christ alone. Any rendering that allows “fullness” to be read as partial, shared, or one among several divine emanations destroys the doctrine. Must always be taught as the complete, undivided fullness of God residing in Christ alone.
κατοικῆσαι (katoikēsai, from κατοικέω)to dwell, to take up permanent residencesettled, permanent dwelling (contrasted with a temporary sojourn, παροικέω)“to dwell,” “to make his home,” “to reside”God’s fullness does not merely visit or temporarily rest upon Christ but permanently and fully indwells him거하다 (geohada) — [NEW, Medium-High risk]. Must convey permanent residence, not the temporary, occasional, or repeatable indwelling/visitation pattern associated with shamanistic spirit-possession (a mudang temporarily “hosting” a visiting spirit during a gut ritual) — this distinction is already established in the Romans baseline under “holy_spirit” and must be extended here to Christ’s indwelling fullness of deity.

Colossians 1:20

TermLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKorean Rendering & Risk
ἀποκαταλλάξαι (apokatallaxai, from ἀποκαταλλάσσω)to reconcile fully/completely (intensified compound of καταλλάσσω)to restore to a right, harmonious relationship after a state of hostility or estrangement; the double prefix (ἀπο- + κατα-) intensifies the base verb “to exchange/reconcile""reconcile,” “restore to favor,” “restore harmony”God’s cosmic reconciling work through Christ, restoring a right relationship between himself and all creation (and, per v.21-22, specifically believers) through the cross — this is the curriculum’s “Reconciliation through the Cross” doctrine in its clearest expression화목하게 하다 (hwamokhage hada) — [NEW, High risk]. This word is not present as a standalone entry in the Romans baseline TM (Romans uses καταλλάσσω/reconciliation conceptually but the baseline glossary has no dedicated “reconciliation” entry). High risk because: Korean 화목 (hwamok) is also the everyday, purely secular/Confucian term for family or social harmony (e.g., 화목한 가정, “a harmonious family” — a core Confucian household virtue). This creates real risk of the doctrine being flattened into a general ideal of relational harmony or conflict-avoidance achieved through mutual effort, rather than the specific, costly, God-initiated, blood-bought reconciliation of hostile sinners to a holy God accomplished exclusively through the cross (v.20’s own qualifying clause, διὰ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ σταυροῦ, “through the blood of his cross,” must always accompany this term in exposition). Teaching must make explicit: this is not achievable human harmony-keeping but an objective, finished, God-accomplished act.
εἰρηνοποιήσας (eirēnopoiēsas, from εἰρηνοποιέω)having made peaceto establish peace, specifically through the cross’s atoning work”making peace,” “having made peace”The means by which reconciliation is accomplished — peace secured at the cross, not negotiated or achieved by the estranged parties themselves화평을 이루사 (hwapyeong-eul irusa) — reuses 화평 (hwapyeong) [TM REUSE, Medium risk per baseline]. The baseline’s existing “peace” entry (Romans 5:1’s relational peace-with-God, secured through justification) applies directly here; Colossians 1:20 gives the fullest statement of how that peace is secured — through the cross’s blood. Retaining 화평 (rather than the more general 평안, already flagged in the baseline) preserves consistency with the Romans peace doctrine.
αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ (haima tou staurou)blood of the crossChrist’s atoning death, specifically his shed blood, on the cross”blood of his cross,” “blood shed on the cross”The specific historical, physical means of reconciliation — not a general concept of sacrifice but this particular death십자가의 피 (sipjaga-ui pi) — [NEW, Medium-High risk]. 십자가 (cross) and 피 (blood) are both well-established KRV vocabulary. Risk is chiefly one of ensuring the phrase is not abstracted into a symbol of suffering-in-general but retained as the specific historical atoning event; some care is warranted given Korean shamanistic ritual contexts historically involving blood-offering/sacrifice imagery (though this is a distant, low-intensity echo compared to the Critical-tier risks elsewhere in this analysis) — a brief clarifying note that this is a once-for-all, sufficient sacrifice (not a repeatable ritual offering) is advisable.
εἴτε τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς εἴτε τὰ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖςwhether things on earth or things in heavencomprehensive merism covering the entirety of the created order, echoing v.16’s list”whether on earth or in heaven,” “things on earth or things in heaven”Reconciliation’s scope is cosmic — matching the cosmic scope of creation established in v.16땅에 있는 것들이나 하늘에 있는 것들 (ttang-e inneun geotdeul-ina haneul-e inneun geotdeul) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Standard merism; must retain the deliberate echo of v.16’s ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς to preserve the hymn’s literary structure (creation’s scope in v.16 = reconciliation’s scope in v.20).

PART 2 — WHOLE-BOOK CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER ANALYSIS

Chapter 1 (vv. 1–14, 21–29 — remainder beyond the core passage)

Term (Greek/Translit)Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKorean Rendering & Risk
ἀπόστολος (apostolos), 1:1one sent with delegated authorityofficial, authoritative emissary”apostle”Paul’s authoritative commission, grounding the letter’s authority사도 (sado) [TM REUSE — Low risk]
θέλημα θεοῦ (thelēma theou), 1:1will/desire of GodGod’s sovereign purpose or decision”will of God”Paul’s apostleship originates in God’s sovereign will, not human ambition하나님의 뜻 (Hananim-ui tteut) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk]. Standard; avoid conflating with 팔자/운명 (fate/destiny) per the baseline’s existing cautions on “calling” and “providence.”
ἅγιοι καὶ πιστοὶ ἀδελφοί (hagioi kai pistoi adelphoi), 1:2holy and faithful brotherscorporate designation for believers”saints and faithful brothers”Addresses the whole congregation, not a spiritual elite성도와 신실한 형제 (seongdo-wa sinsilhan hyeongje) — 성도 [TM REUSE]; 형제 (hyeongje, brother/sibling-believer) is [NEW, Low risk]
χάρις καὶ εἰρήνη (charis kai eirēnē), 1:2grace and peacePaul’s standard epistolary greeting-pair”grace and peace”The gospel’s twin gifts, granted at the letter’s outset은혜 (eunhye) [TM REUSE — Critical, per baseline]; 평강 (pyeonggang) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Note: KRV’s epistolary-greeting convention (also 1 Cor 1:3, Rom 1:7) uses 평강 for this greeting-pair sense of εἰρήνη, distinct from 화평 (used specifically for Romans 5:1’s “peace with God through justification,” already in the baseline) and from 평안 (general well-being, already flagged as insufficient in the baseline). Recommend retaining KRV’s three-way distinction: 화평 (justification-peace), 평강 (epistolary/communal peace, also Col 3:15), 평안 (general well-being — to be avoided for doctrinal contexts).
εὐχαριστέω (eucharisteō), 1:3, 12to give thanksgrateful acknowledgment directed to God”give thanks,” “thank”Paul’s thanksgiving frames the whole letter’s tone감사 (gamsa) [TM REUSE — Low risk]
πίστις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ (pistis en Christō Iēsou), 1:4faith in Christ Jesustrust placed specifically in Christ”faith in Christ Jesus”The Colossians’ saving trust, distinct object specified믿음 (mideum) [TM REUSE — High risk per baseline]
ἀγάπη (agapē), 1:4, 8loveself-giving, others-directed love; distinct from erotic (ἔρως) or affectionate (φιλία, στοργή) love”love”The Colossians’ love for all the saints, evidence of genuine faith사랑 (sarang) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Standard term with broad secular usage in Korean (romantic, familial, etc.); teaching must specify the distinctively self-giving, Christ-modeled sense (cf. 3:14’s “bond of perfection”) rather than assume the term automatically conveys agapē’s theological content.
ἐλπίς (elpis), 1:5, 23, 27hopeconfident expectation grounded in God’s promise, not wishful uncertainty”hope”The hope “laid up in heaven” and “Christ in you, the hope of glory” — an assured future good, not a mere wish소망 (somang) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Must be distinguished from a vague optimistic wish; biblical ἐλπίς is a certainty grounded in God’s character and promise. Some risk of flattening into a generic “hope for good fortune” register adjacent to 기복신앙 concerns already flagged for “grace” in the baseline — teaching should tie 소망 explicitly to the person and promise of Christ, not detached wish-fulfillment.
εὐαγγέλιον (euangelion), 1:5, 23gospelauthoritative good-news proclamation”gospel,” “the word of truth, the gospel”The gospel as a fixed, unchanging message received (contrasted with the shifting “philosophy” of ch. 2)복음 (bogeum) [TM REUSE — Medium risk per baseline]
καρποφορούμενον καὶ αὐξανόμενον (karpophoroumenon kai auxanomenon), 1:6, 10bearing fruit and growingorganic growth-and-fruitfulness imagery”bearing fruit and growing”The gospel’s ongoing, worldwide, living effect — not a static past event열매를 맺고 자라나다 (yeolmae-reul maetgo jaranada) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk]. Standard agricultural metaphor; low collision risk.
ἐπίγνωσις (epignōsis), 1:9-10full/precise knowledgean intensified form of γνῶσις; experiential, thorough knowing, not mere information”knowledge,” “full knowledge,” “true knowledge”The Colossians’ need to be filled with the full knowledge of God’s will — a key term Paul redeploys against the false teachers’ claim to superior/esoteric γνῶσις아는 것 / 참지식 (aneun geot / chamjisik) — [NEW, High risk]. KRV often renders this contextually as a verbal phrase (“하나님의 뜻을 아는 것,” “아는 것에 자라게 하시고”) rather than a fixed noun. High risk because: Colossians’ false teachers apparently claimed a superior, perhaps secret, γνῶσις/ἐπίγνωσις reserved for spiritual adepts — a pattern with a real, contemporary Korean echo in indigenous new religious movements and heterodox groups that claim exclusive, hidden interpretive knowledge of Scripture available only to an inner circle. Must be taught as knowledge freely available to all believers through the gospel, grounded in Christ and producing godly conduct (1:10), never an esoteric possession marking a spiritually elite subgroup. Also distinguish from Korean Buddhist 깨달음 (kkaedareum, enlightenment/realization attained through spiritual practice) — biblical epignōsis is received by revelation and grace, not self-attained through discipline.
σοφία καὶ σύνεσις πνευματική (sophia kai synesis pneumatikē), 1:9spiritual wisdom and understandingwisdom and discernment given by the Spirit for right living”spiritual wisdom and understanding”God-given practical and doctrinal discernment, contrasted with human philosophical wisdom (2:8, 2:23)신령한 지혜와 총명 (sillyeonghan jihye-wa chongmyeong) — 지혜 (jihye, wisdom) [NEW, High risk]: Korean 지혜 is also the standard rendering for Buddhist prajñā (반야지혜), the transcendent wisdom that leads to enlightenment/liberation in Korean Buddhist teaching — a genuine and significant semantic-field collision. Must always be qualified as “신령한” (Spirit-given) and tied to knowing and obeying God’s revealed will, not self-cultivated insight leading to liberation from suffering. 총명 (chongmyeong, discernment/keenness of mind) — [NEW, Medium risk], standard KRV rendering of σύνεσις.
περιπατέω ἀξίως τοῦ κυρίου (peripateō axiōs tou kyriou), 1:10to walk worthily of the Lordconduct one’s whole manner of life in a way fitting one’s identity”walk worthily,” “live a life worthy of the Lord”The recurring Colossians metaphor for practical Christian conduct (also 2:6, 3:7, 4:5)주께 합당하게 행하다 (jukke habdanghage haenghada) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk]. 행하다 (haenghada, walk/conduct) is a standard recurring ethical-conduct metaphor across the letter; flag for consistency across all four occurrences.
δύναμις, κράτος, δόξα (dynamis, kratos, doxa), 1:11power, might, glorystrengthening enablement for endurance, drawn from God’s own glorious might”all power,” “his glorious might,” “strengthened with all power according to his glorious might”Believers are strengthened for patient endurance by God’s own power — note the context here is sanctifying/enduring power, distinct from (though related to) the Romans 1:16 soteriological “power of God for salvation”능력 (neungnyeok) [TM REUSE — Critical risk per baseline]; note the context-shift from Romans 1:16 (God’s power specifically to save from sin) to Colossians 1:11 (God’s power to sustain patient endurance) must be flagged — the same forbidden-substitution rule (never 영력, a shaman’s spirit-power) applies in both contexts. 권능/힘 (gwonneung/him, might) [NEW, Medium risk] for κράτος. 영광 (yeonggwang) [TM REUSE — Medium risk].
ὑπομονή καὶ μακροθυμία (hypomonē kai makrothymia), 1:11endurance and patience/longsufferingsteadfastness under trial; patient forbearance toward people”endurance and patience,” “great endurance and patience”Spirit-empowered perseverance, joyfully sustained (μετὰ χαρᾶς)인내와 오래 참음 (innae-wa orae chameum) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk]. Standard terms; no major collision, though see the Romans baseline’s existing note on μακροθυμία-adjacent “obedience of faith” cautions regarding Confucian endurance-as-virtue framing — patience here is Spirit-given, not stoic self-discipline.
κλῆρος τῶν ἁγίων ἐν τῷ φωτί (klēros tōn hagiōn en tō phōti), 1:12portion/inheritance of the saints in lightthe allotted share belonging to God’s holy people, in the realm of light”inheritance of the saints in light,” “share in the inheritance of the saints”Believers’ guaranteed share in God’s kingdom inheritance — the first of several inheritance/adoption echoes in Colossians (cf. 3:24)성도의 기업 (seongdo-ui gieop) — [NEW, High risk]. 성도 [TM REUSE]; 기업 (gieop, inheritance/allotted portion) is a new term closely related to the baseline’s Critical/High “adoption” (양자) entry. As in Romans, teaching must clarify this inheritance is a relational, gracious gift secured by Christ, not a continuation of a Confucian ancestral-inheritance or ancestor-rite (제사) framework.
ῥύομαι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ σκότους (rhyomai ek tēs exousias tou skotous), 1:13rescued/delivered from the authority/domain of darknessforceful deliverance from a hostile ruling power”delivered/rescued us from the domain of darkness”God’s decisive rescue of believers from Satan’s realm of sin and death흑암의 권세에서 건지다 (heugam-ui gwonse-eseo geonjida) — [NEW, High risk]. Must be taught as rescue from the moral-spiritual dominion of sin and Satan governed by a personal God’s decisive act, NOT as a shamanistic exorcism/curse-removal ritual (살풀이, 굿) addressing misfortune or malevolent spirits through ritual means; this is a definitive, once-for-all transfer, not a repeatable ritual remedy.
μεθίστημι εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ υἱοῦ (methistēmi eis tēn basileian tou huiou), 1:13transferred into the kingdom of the Sona decisive relocation from one ruling domain into another”transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son”Believers’ new citizenship/allegiance, under Christ’s kingship아들의 나라로 옮기다 (adeul-ui nara-ro omgida) — reuses 하나님의 나라 (Hananim-ui nara) concept [TM REUSE — Low risk per baseline]; here specifically “그 사랑의 아들의 나라” (the kingdom of his beloved Son). Korea’s comparatively low political-collision risk (noted in the baseline) continues to apply.
ἀπολύτρωσις, ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν (apolytrōsis, aphesis tōn hamartiōn), 1:14redemption, forgiveness of sinsransom/release from bondage (ἀπολύτρωσις, from λύτρον, ransom-price); the sending-away/pardoning of sins (ἄφεσις)“redemption,” “forgiveness of sins”Christ’s atoning death as a ransom-payment securing release from sin’s guilt and power속량 (sokryang) — [NEW, High risk]. Must convey a costly, once-for-all ransom paid through Christ’s blood, securing legal release from sin’s guilt before a holy God. Risk: Korean shamanism includes ritual practices (해원굿, 살풀이) aimed at “resolving” or “releasing” a person from ancestral grudges (한, han) or curse-bound misfortune through repeated ritual performance by a mudang; 속량 must be clearly distinguished as a singular, sufficient, already-accomplished redemption from moral guilt, not a repeatable ritual release from bad fortune or spiritual grudge. 죄 사함 (joe saham, forgiveness of sins) reuses 죄 (joe) [TM REUSE — High risk per baseline].
ἐχθροί, ἀπαλλοτριωμένους (echthroi, apēllotriōmenous), 1:21enemies, alienated/estrangeda state of active hostility and relational separation”alienated and hostile in mind,” “were once alienated, hostile in mind”The pre-conversion condition reconciliation addresses — not neutral distance but active enmity toward God원수, 소원해지다 (wonsu, sowonhaejida) — [NEW, Medium-High risk]. Must convey genuine hostility toward a personal God (not merely social alienation or loss of face/체면, already flagged as an inadequate substitute for “sin” in the baseline).
ἁγίους καὶ ἀμώμους καὶ ἀνεγκλήτους (hagious kai amōmous kai anenklētous), 1:22holy, blameless, and irreproachablemoral perfection and freedom from valid accusation, as the goal of reconciliation”holy and blameless and above reproach”The reconciled believer’s presented status before God — a direct result of the reconciliation described in v.20거룩하고 흠 없고 책망할 것이 없는 (georokago heum eomneun jaengmanghal geosi eomneun) — 거룩한 [TM REUSE]; 흠 없는 (heum eomneun, blameless) and 책망할 것이 없는 (chaengmanghal geosi eomneun, irreproachable) [NEW, Low-Medium risk]
ὑστέρημα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ (hysterēma tōn thlipseōn tou Christou), 1:24that which is lacking of the afflictions of ChristPaul’s own apostolic suffering, viewed as “filling up” a quota of tribulation appointed for the church’s sake”what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions,” “the remainder of Christ’s sufferings”Paul’s missionary suffering on behalf of the church, NOT a deficiency in Christ’s atoning work그리스도의 남은 고난 (Geuriseudo-ui nameun gonan) — [NEW, CRITICAL risk]. This phrase directly collides, if mishandled, with the curriculum’s own core doctrine of “the Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ.” Critical because: a surface reading (“what is lacking/left over of Christ’s sufferings”) could imply Christ’s atoning death was insufficient and requires supplementation. The correct doctrinal reading (nearly universal among orthodox commentators) is that Paul refers to his own apostolic tribulations in gospel ministry — a distinct category of suffering (missionary/pastoral affliction “for the sake of his body, the church”) from Christ’s unique, complete, once-for-all atoning suffering. Any Korean rendering and accompanying teaching note MUST explicitly state: (1) Christ’s atoning sacrifice is complete and lacks nothing for salvation; (2) “what is lacking” refers to the ongoing, Spirit-appointed measure of gospel-ministry suffering the church as Christ’s body must yet undergo, which Paul was contributing to through his own afflictions. This passage should be flagged for mandatory human theologian review in every occurrence.
οἰκονομία τοῦ θεοῦ (oikonomia tou theou), 1:25stewardship/administration of Godan assigned office of management/service”stewardship,” “commission”Paul’s God-given ministry assignment to fully proclaim God’s word직분 (jikbun) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk]. Standard ministry-office term.
μυστήριον τὸ ἀποκεκρυμμένον … νῦν δὲ ἐφανερώθη (mystērion to apokekrymmenon … nyn de ephanerōthē), 1:26-27the mystery that had been hidden … but now has been revealedin Paul, not a permanently secret or esoteric truth but a formerly hidden divine plan now openly disclosed to all through the gospel — the opposite of a Greco-Roman “mystery cult’s” perpetually restricted secret”mystery hidden for ages … now revealed,” “hidden but now disclosed”God’s redemptive plan (specifically, Gentile inclusion, v.27) was concealed in past ages but is now openly proclaimed to everyone — a deliberate reversal of pagan “mystery” religion’s model of exclusive secret knowledge감추어졌던 비밀 … 이제는 나타났고 (gamchueojyeotdeon bimil … ije-neun natanatgo) — 비밀 (bimil) [NEW, Critical risk]; 나타나다 (natanada, revealed/manifested) [NEW, Medium-High risk]. Critical because: this term sits at the doctrinal center of Colossians’ “warning against false teaching” theme and carries a direct, contemporary Korean collision risk: Korea has a documented and ongoing phenomenon of indigenous new religious movements and cult groups (some explicitly claiming Christian identity) that teach they alone possess the “hidden mystery” or exclusive correct interpretation of Scripture (particularly Revelation), reserved for an inner circle of the specially initiated. 비밀 in Colossians must always be taught with its resolution clause intact: this mystery is NOW OPENLY REVEALED to ALL who believe, not a continuing secret reserved for spiritual elites, secret societies, or a particular teacher’s inner circle. This is among the highest-priority pastoral safeguards in this curriculum for the Korean context and should route to mandatory theologian review.
Χριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖν, ἡ ἐλπὶς τῆς δόξης (Christos en hymin, hē elpis tēs doxēs), 1:27Christ in you, the hope of glorythe indwelling Christ himself as the ground of future glorification”Christ in you, the hope of glory”The content of the “mystery” — not an abstract doctrine but the person of Christ himself, indwelling believersReuses 소망 (somang) and 영광 (yeonggwang) [TM REUSE — Medium risk]
νουθετέω καὶ διδάσκω ἐν πάσῃ σοφίᾳ (noutheteō kai didaskō en pasē sophia), 1:28admonish and teach in all wisdomwarn/instruct earnestly, combined with careful doctrinal instruction”warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom”Paul’s comprehensive pastoral method, aimed at presenting every believer mature in Christ훈계하다, 가르치다 (hungyehada, gareuchida) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk]. Related to, but distinct from, the baseline’s existing 권면하다 (gwonmyeonhada, “exhort/encourage,” Low risk) — νουθετέω carries a slightly stronger corrective/warning sense; note both terms may appear together in Colossians (3:16 uses νουθετοῦντες also).
τέλειος ἐν Χριστῷ (teleios en Christō), 1:28perfect/mature/complete in Christfull maturity or completeness; in Greco-Roman mystery-religion usage, also a technical term for one who has undergone full ritual initiation”perfect,” “mature,” “complete”Paul’s goal for every believer — full maturity in Christ available to all through ordinary gospel teaching, not a graduated attainment reserved for advanced initiates온전한 (onjeonhan) — [NEW, High risk]. Directly relevant to the letter’s anti-syncretism theme: in the Colossian heresy’s likely mystery-religion-influenced background, τέλειος could denote a spiritually “initiated” or “advanced” status attained through esoteric rites, echoing the ἐμβατεύω (“entering into” visions, 2:18) and false ταπεινοφροσύνη practices condemned in ch. 2. This has a live Korean parallel: some Korean new religious movements and heterodox groups teach a tiered membership structure in which only an inner circle attains “complete/perfected” spiritual status (echoing, for example, well-documented claims among certain Korean groups regarding a specially “sealed” or “perfected” number of members). 온전한 in Colossians must be taught as maturity available to every believer through ordinary gospel teaching and union with Christ — never an elite, secretly-attained tier of spiritual status.
ἐνέργεια, κοπιάω (energeia, kopiaō), 1:29working/operative power, to labor/toilGod’s power working effectively within Paul, producing strenuous ministry effort”his energy that he powerfully works within me,” “toil, striving”Paul’s ministry labor is Spirit-empowered, not self-generated effort역사(役事)하다 / 수고하다 (yeoksahada / sugohada) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Note: 역사 (yeoksa, “working/activity of God”) is a homonym with 역사 (history) in Korean; this is a well-established piece of Korean Christian jargon but may cause reader confusion without context — a minor clarity risk, not a doctrinal-collision risk.

Chapter 1 coverage note: all load-bearing terms addressed, including the core passage (1:15-20) treated separately above.

Chapter 2

Term (Greek/Translit)Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKorean Rendering & Risk
ἀγών (agōn), 2:1struggle, contest (athletic/agonistic metaphor)intense effort, as in a wrestling match or race”struggle,” “conflict,” “how great a struggle I have”Paul’s intense pastoral concern and labor for churches he has not personally visited애씀/씨름 (aesseum/ssireum) — [NEW, Low risk]. Standard effort-metaphor; low collision risk.
συμβιβασθέντες ἐν ἀγάπῃ (symbibasthentes en agapē), 2:2knit/joined together in loveorganic unification through love”knit together in love”The goal of Paul’s pastoral labor — a church united by love, not fractured by false teaching사랑 안에서 하나로 연합하다 (sarang an-eseo hanaro yeonhapada) — reuses 사랑 (sarang) [NEW, see ch.1]
πλοῦτος τῆς πληροφορίας τῆς συνέσεως (ploutos tēs plērophorias tēs syneseōs), 2:2riches of the full assurance of understandingabundant, confident comprehension”riches of full assurance of understanding”Full confidence in gospel truth, contrasted with the false teachers’ unstable “persuasive arguments” (v.4)확신 (hwaksin) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk]. Standard term.
ἐπίγνωσις τοῦ μυστηρίου τοῦ θεοῦ, Χριστοῦ (epignōsis tou mystēriou tou theou, Christou), 2:2full knowledge of the mystery of God, [namely] Christthe content of the “mystery” is explicitly identified as Christ himself”the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ”Directly identifies Christ as the mystery’s full content, foreclosing any competing esoteric “mystery”Reuses 아는 것/참지식 (epignōsis) and 비밀 (mystery) — [NEW, High/Critical risk, see ch.1 notes]
θησαυροὶ τῆς σοφίας καὶ γνώσεως ἀπόκρυφοι (thēsauroi tēs sophias kai gnōseōs apokryphoi), 2:3hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledgethe totality of true wisdom/knowledge, located exclusively “in him” (Christ)“in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge”All valid wisdom and knowledge, of whatever kind sought elsewhere, are found only in Christ — a direct polemic against any rival source of wisdom (philosophical, ascetic, or angelic-visionary)Reuses 지혜 (sophia) [NEW, High risk, see ch.1] and 지식/γνῶσις (jisik) [NEW, Medium-High risk — same Buddhist-prajña collision noted for σοφία applies by extension]
παραλογίζομαι ἐν πιθανολογίᾳ (paralogizomai en pithanologia), 2:4to delude/deceive by false reasoning, with persuasive/plausible speechrhetorically convincing but false argumentation”deceive you with plausible arguments,” “delude you with beguiling speech”Paul’s explicit warning that the false teaching, however persuasive-sounding, is deceptive교묘한 말로 속이다 (gyomyohan mallo sogida) — [NEW, Medium-High risk]. Must convey rhetorically sophisticated deception — relevant caution for contemporary Korean contexts where syncretistic or cultic teaching is often presented with high intellectual/scriptural polish.
τάξις, στερέωμα τῆς πίστεως (taxis, stereōma tēs pisteōs), 2:5order, firmness of faithgood order and a solid, stable faith”good order and the firmness of your faith”Commendation of the church’s present doctrinal stability, which the letter seeks to protect질서, 믿음의 견고함 (jilseo, mideum-ui gyeongoham) — reuses 믿음 (mideum) [TM REUSE]; 질서/견고함 [NEW, Low risk]
περιπατεῖτε ἐν αὐτῷ (peripateite en autō), 2:6walk in himongoing conduct rooted in union with Christ”walk in him,” “continue to live your lives in him”The positive counterpart to the ch.2 warnings — abiding, ongoing life in Christ as the antidote to false teachingReuses 행하다/περιπατέω [NEW, see ch.1]
ῥιζόω, ἐποικοδομέω, βεβαιόω (rhizoō, epoikodomeō, bebaioō), 2:7rooted, built up, established/confirmedagricultural (rooted) and architectural (built up) metaphors combined with a legal/confirmatory term (established)“rooted and built up in him and established in the faith”Stability metaphors reinforcing the “firmness” of v.5 — the church’s proper posture against ch. 2’s threats뿌리를 박고, 세움을 받고, 굳게 서다 (ppuri-reul bakgo, seum-eul batgo, gutge seoda) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk]. Standard metaphor cluster.
φιλοσοφία καὶ κενὴ ἀπάτη (philosophia kai kenē apatē), 2:8philosophy and empty deceithere a specific, syncretistic system of thought threatening the Colossian church (likely blending Jewish ritual elements, ascetic practice, and speculative cosmology) — not a blanket condemnation of rational inquiry as such”philosophy and empty deceit,” “hollow and deceptive philosophy”The named danger the whole letter addresses: a seductive alternative system that “takes captive” (συλαγωγέω) believers away from Christ’s sufficiency철학과 헛된 속임수 (cheolhakgwa heotdoen sogimsu) — [NEW, CRITICAL risk]. This is the letter’s central named threat and the direct textual basis for the curriculum’s “Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism” doctrine. Must be taught with precision: Paul does not condemn rational thought or learning generally but this specific human-tradition-based, Christ-displacing system (v.8’s own qualifiers: κατὰ τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, κατὰ τὰ στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου, οὐ κατὰ Χριστόν — “according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, not according to Christ”). In the Korean context this term should be taught alongside concrete, contemporary categories of “philosophy and empty deceit” believers may encounter: syncretistic blending of Christian profession with shamanistic practice, folk-astrology (사주팔자), geomancy (풍수), or new-religious-movement doctrine — any system, however intellectually dressed, that displaces Christ’s all-sufficiency. Route to mandatory theologian review.
παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων (paradosis tōn anthrōpōn), 2:8tradition of men/human traditionmerely human-originated teaching, as opposed to divine revelation”human tradition,” “tradition of men”Explicitly contrasted with “according to Christ” — the source-test for distinguishing true from false teaching사람의 전통/유전 (saram-ui jeontong/yujeon) — [NEW, High risk]. Must be distinguished carefully from legitimate apostolic tradition (paradosis can be positive elsewhere in Paul, e.g. 2 Thess 2:15) — here specifically negative, human-originated teaching displacing Christ; also relevant caution regarding Confucian classical-text transmission (경, gyeong) already flagged under “inspiration of Scripture” in the Romans baseline.
στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου (stoicheia tou kosmou), 2:8, 20elemental things/basic principles of the worlddebated term: possibly (a) basic/elementary teachings or rudiments, (b) the physical elements (earth, air, fire, water), or (c) personified elemental spirit-powers governing the cosmos (a live sense in the Greco-Roman world)“elemental spirits of the world,” “elemental spiritual forces,” “basic principles of this world,” “elementary teachings of the world”Whatever the precise referent, Paul’s point is that these are subordinate, worldly, defeated powers to which believers who have died with Christ (2:20) owe no further allegiance or observance세상의 초등학문 (sesang-ui chodeung hangmun) — [NEW, CRITICAL risk]. KRV’s traditional rendering (“elementary teachings/rudiments of the world”). Critical because: whichever precise sense is intended, this term names exactly the kind of cosmic-force system (elemental/spiritual powers believed to govern fate, fortune, and cosmic order) that has a powerful living analogue in Korean folk religion — the Five Phases/Elements theory (오행, ohaeng) underlying Korean geomancy (풍수), fortune-telling (사주팔자, saju-paljja, already flagged Critical/High repeatedly in the Romans baseline), and shamanistic cosmology generally. Teaching MUST make explicit that Colossians 2:8, 20 declares such elemental/cosmic-force systems — whatever their form, ancient or contemporary — subordinate to and already defeated by Christ; the believer “died” with Christ to any continuing obligation toward them (2:20). This is one of the highest-priority terms in this curriculum for Korean cultural application and should route to mandatory theologian review.
πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς (plērōma tēs theotētos sōmatikōs), 2:9the fullness of deity/Godhead, bodilythe complete, undivided essence of divine being, permanently and physically embodied in Christ”the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,” “all the fullness of the Godhead bodily”The curriculum’s core “Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily” doctrine stated in its sharpest form — Christ possesses the complete essence of God, permanently united to a real human body신성의 모든 충만이 육체로 (sinseong-ui modeun chungman-i yukche-ro) — [NEW, CRITICAL risk]. 신성 (sinseong, “deity/divine essence”) renders θεότης — note this is a distinct Greek word from θειότης (“divine quality/attribute,” Rom 1:20, not itself in the Romans TM as a separate entry), and must be translated to convey the full essence of deity itself, not merely a divine quality or attribute. 충만 reuses the term established in 1:19 [NEW, Critical, see above]. 육체로 (yukche-ro, “bodily/in bodily form”) is [NEW, Critical risk]: must affirm a real, physical, permanent human body — NOT an illusory appearance (docetism) and NOT a temporary, provisional manifestation-form comparable to the Buddhist 화신 (hwasin, avatar/incarnation-of-a-buddha) concept already forbidden under “incarnation” in the Romans baseline. Also must not be assimilated to shamanistic spirit-possession phenomena (a mudang’s body temporarily inhabited by a visiting spirit during a gut ritual) — Christ’s bodily fullness of deity is permanent and unique, not episodic or ritual. Route to mandatory theologian review.
πεπληρωμένοι ἐν αὐτῷ (peplērōmenoi en autō), 2:10having been filled/made complete in himbelievers share derivatively in Christ’s fullness — completeness through union with him”you have been filled in him,” “you have come to fullness in him”Believers need no supplementary source of completeness (ascetic practice, angelic mediation, philosophical wisdom) — Christ’s fullness is already sufficient for themReuses 충만 (chungman) [NEW, Critical, see above]
κεφαλὴ πάσης ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐξουσίας (kephalē pasēs archēs kai exousias), 2:10head of all rule and authorityChrist’s supremacy restated over every spiritual power”head over every ruler and authority”Reaffirms 1:16, 18 — no rival power, named or unnamed, stands outside Christ’s headshipReuses 머리 (kephalē) [NEW, High, see core passage 1:18] and 통치자, 권세 (archē, exousia) [NEW, High, see 1:16]
περιτομὴ ἀχειροποίητος, περιτομὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ (peritomē acheiropoiētos, peritomē tou Christou), 2:11circumcision not made with hands, circumcision of Christa spiritual, Christ-accomplished “cutting off” of the sinful nature, contrasted with the physical rite of circumcision”circumcision made without hands,” “the circumcision of Christ”Union with Christ accomplishes spiritually what physical circumcision only symbolized — believers need no supplementary physical rite (relevant to the false teachers’ apparent demand for circumcision or circumcision-adjacent practices)손으로 하지 아니한 할례, 그리스도의 할례 (son-euro haji anihan hallye, Geuriseudo-ui hallye) — 할례 (hallye, circumcision) [NEW, Medium risk]. Since circumcision is not a familiar religious rite in the Korean cultural context (no equivalent tradition), the primary risk here is comprehensibility rather than doctrinal collision; explanatory framing (rather than a cultural substitute term) is recommended to preserve the OT covenantal background.
ἀπέκδυσις τοῦ σώματος τῆς σαρκός (apekdysis tou sōmatos tēs sarkos), 2:11putting off/stripping off the body of fleshdecisive removal of the sinful nature’s dominion”putting off the body of the flesh”The spiritual reality circumcision pointed to — accomplished in union with Christ육신의 몸을 벗어 버림 (yuksin-ui mom-eul beoseo beorim) — σάρξ (sarx, flesh) [NEW, High risk]. Must be distinguished from mere physical body/embodiment (which Scripture affirms as good) — σάρξ here denotes the sinful nature/fallen disposition, not physicality itself; risk of confusion with ascetic body-denial teaching (explicitly critiqued later in 2:23) if not carefully distinguished.
συνθάπτω, συνηγέρθητε (synthaptō, synēgerthēte), 2:12buried together with, raised together withunion with Christ enacted/symbolized in baptism — sharing in both his death and resurrection”buried with him in baptism… raised with him”Core “Union with Christ” doctrine: believers’ definitive spiritual identification with Christ’s death and resurrection, appropriated through faith and pictured in baptism함께 장사되고, 함께 일으키심을 받다 (hamkke jangsadoego, hamkke ireukisim-eul batda) — [NEW, High risk]. Reuses 부활 (buhwal) doctrinal core [TM REUSE — Critical forbidden-substitution rule applies: never 환생/윤회]. Must convey a definitive, once-accomplished spiritual union (already true of every believer), not a repeatable ritual or a gradual self-attained transformation; the σύν- (“with/together”) compound verbs are the letter’s central “Union with Christ” vocabulary and should be rendered consistently wherever they recur (also 3:1, 3, “raised with Christ… your life is hidden with Christ”).
βάπτισμα (baptisma), 2:12baptismthe rite signifying union with Christ’s death and resurrection”baptism”The visible sign of the union just described세례 (serye) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Standard term; should not be confused with any ritual washing for removing shamanistic ritual impurity/misfortune (부정을 씻음), a distinction already established for “holy” in the Romans baseline and applicable here by extension.
νεκροὺς ἐν τοῖς παραπτώμασιν, συζωοποιέω (nekrous en tois paraptōmasin, syzōopoieō), 2:13dead in trespasses, made alive together withspiritual death reversed by being given life jointly with Christ”dead in your trespasses… made alive together with him”The believer’s prior spiritual deadness and God’s decisive act of joint-resurrection life범죄로 죽었던 자, 함께 살리다 (beomjoero jugeotdeon ja, hamkke sallida) — [NEW, High risk]. Reuses 죄 (joe) concept [TM REUSE].
χαρίζομαι, ἐξαλείφω τὸ χειρόγραφον (charizomai, exaleiphō to cheirographon), 2:13-14graciously forgiving, wiping out/erasing the certificate of debtGod’s gracious cancellation of a legal record of debt/obligation against believers”having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt”The legal-financial metaphor for forgiveness: sin recorded a debt against humanity, which God has completely erased through the cross우리의 죄를 사하시고, 증서를 지우시다 (uri-ui joe-reul sahasigo, jeungseo-reul jiusida) — [NEW, CRITICAL risk]. χειρόγραφον (증서, jeungseo, “certificate of debt/bond”) is a unique and vivid Pauline image. Critical because: Korean shamanism contains a well-documented ritual pattern of “resolving” or “releasing” a debt or grudge (한, han) held by ancestors or spirits through repeated ritual performance (해원굿, haewon-gut, “debt/grudge-resolution ritual”), performed by a mudang to appease the aggrieved spirit and remove its ongoing claim/curse. This term risks being read through that ritual-debt-appeasement lens rather than as the once-for-all, complete, legally decisive cancellation of a moral debt of sin before a holy God, accomplished exclusively through Christ’s cross (v.14’s “nailing it to the cross,” προσηλόω) and never requiring repetition, ritual performance, or ongoing appeasement. Route to mandatory theologian review.
ἀπεκδυσάμενος τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας, δειγματίζω, θριαμβεύω (apekdysamenos tas archas kai tas exousias, deigmatizō, thriambeuō), 2:15having disarmed/stripped the rulers and authorities, making a public example/spectacle, leading in triumphal processionmilitary-triumph imagery: Christ stripped hostile spiritual powers of their weapons, publicly exposed/shamed them, and paraded them as defeated captives”disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, triumphing over them”The decisive, public, total defeat of every hostile spiritual power through the cross — the climactic answer to any teaching (then or now) counseling continued fear of, negotiation with, or appeasement of such powers통치자들과 권세들의 무장을 해제하시고, 드러내어 보이시고, 이기셨다 (tongchijadeul-gwa gwonsedeul-ui mujang-eul haejehasigo, deureonaeeo boisigo, igisyeotda) — [NEW, High risk]. Reuses 통치자, 권세 (archē, exousia) [NEW, High, see 1:16]. This is the direct answer to the false teachers’ apparent angel/power veneration (2:18): these powers are already publicly, decisively defeated — believers owe them no fear, ritual deference, or appeasement of any kind. Should be taught alongside the χειρόγραφον image immediately preceding it (v.14) as one continuous scene: the cross both cancels the debt AND publicly defeats the powers that held it over humanity.
βρῶσις, πόσις, ἑορτή, νεομηνία, σάββατον (brōsis, posis, heortē, neomēnia, sabbaton), 2:16food, drink, feast, new moon, sabbathJewish (and possibly syncretistic) ceremonial-calendar observances”food or drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath”Ritual-calendar observances the false teachers apparently pressed as obligatory — Paul declares them non-binding shadows now fulfilled in Christ먹고 마시는 것, 절기, 초하루, 안식일 (meokgo masineun geot, jeolgi, chohalu, ansikil) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Requires OT/Jewish ceremonial-calendar background explanation for full comprehension in a Korean context with no native equivalent ritual calendar of this kind.
σκιὰ τῶν μελλόντων, τὸ δὲ σῶμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ (skia tōn mellontōn, to de sōma tou Christou), 2:17a shadow of the things to come, but the substance/body [belongs to] Christtypological language: the OT ceremonial observances anticipated and pointed toward a future reality now arrived in Christ”these are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ”The OT ceremonial law’s proper, now-completed role — anticipatory, not independently binding once its reality (Christ) has come장래 일의 그림자요, 몸은 그리스도의 것 (jangnae il-ui geurimja-yo, mom-eun Geuriseudo-ui geot) — [NEW, High risk]. Must convey a typological fulfillment relationship (shadow anticipates and is superseded by substance/reality), NOT an illusionistic/unreal-vs-real dichotomy that could be misread through a Buddhist “emptiness”/appearance-vs-reality (공, gong; 색즉시공, “form is emptiness”) lens, which would wrongly suggest the created, physical order itself is illusory rather than that ceremonial types have now given way to their fulfillment in Christ.
καταβραβεύω (katabrabeuō), 2:18to disqualify, rob of a prize (judging-contest metaphor)to render someone ineligible for a reward through an adverse ruling”disqualify you,” “rob you of your prize”Warning against letting false teachers’ demands (asceticism, angel-worship, visions) disqualify believers from their assured reward in Christ너희 상을 빼앗다 (neohui sang-eul ppaeatda) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Athletic/legal metaphor requiring brief explanation for full clarity.
ταπεινοφροσύνη [false] καὶ θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων (tapeinophrosynē [false] kai thrēskeia tōn angelōn), 2:18[false] humility and worship of angelshere, a self-abasing ascetic practice combined with angel-veneration, apparently part of the Colossian heresy’s devotional system”false humility and worship of angels,” “self-abasement and worship of angels”A specific named form of syncretistic false worship — creaturely veneration displacing worship due to Christ alone[거짓] 겸손과 천사 숭배 (겸손, gyeomson; 천사 숭배, cheonsa sungbae) — [NEW, CRITICAL/High risk]. Note ταπεινοφροσύνη is used both negatively here (false, self-devised humility as a display of ascetic piety) and positively in 3:12 (genuine Christian humility as a virtue) — teaching must flag this dual usage clearly rather than treating “humility” as uniformly positive throughout the letter. 천사 숭배 (angel-worship): must be taught as directly relevant to Korea’s populated folk-religious spirit-world — the broader principle (creatures, however exalted, must never be venerated in place of or alongside the one true God) applies directly to Korean veneration of ancestral spirits (조상신), mountain spirits (산신), and other intermediary spirit-beings addressed in shamanistic practice. This connects directly to the Father/ancestor-rite (제사) collision already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline.
ἐμβατεύω (embateuō), 2:18entering into [visions] — a rare, technical term, possibly drawn from mystery-cult initiation vocabulary describing an initiate’s ritual “entering” a sanctuary to receive a visionto base a claim of authority on visionary experience one has “entered into""going on in detail about visions he has seen,” “taking his stand on visions”The false teachers apparently claimed authority from private visionary experience — a source of teaching authority Paul rejects in favor of Christ-grounded, publicly-taught truth환상에 몰두하다 (hwansang-e moldu-hada) — [NEW, High risk]. Directly relevant to Korean charismatic/Pentecostal church culture’s strong emphasis on personal vision and prophetic experience (already flagged Medium-High for “spiritual gifts” in the Romans baseline regarding shamanistic spirit-power parallels) — teaching should clarify that private visionary claims, however vivid, may never become an independent source of authority rivaling or supplementing Christ and apostolic teaching.
φυσιόω ὑπὸ τοῦ νοὸς τῆς σαρκός (physioō hypo tou noos tēs sarkos), 2:18puffed up by the mind of the fleshinflated, unwarranted spiritual pride, rooted in unregenerate thinking”puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind”The false teachers’ spiritual pride, despite their claims to superior humility/insight육신의 생각으로 헛되이 교만하다 (yuksin-ui saenggak-euro heotdoei gyomanhada) — [NEW, Medium risk].
κρατέω τὴν κεφαλήν (krateō tēn kephalēn), 2:19hold fast the Headmaintaining vital connection to Christ as the church’s life-source”not holding fast to the Head”The false teachers’ fatal error: detachment from Christ, the true source of the body’s growthReuses 머리 (kephalē) [NEW, High, see 1:18]
αὔξησις τοῦ θεοῦ (auxēsis tou theou), 2:19growth from/of Godthe church’s organic growth, sourced entirely in Christ the Head, not in human ascetic effort”grows with a growth that is from God”Reinforces that spiritual growth/maturity (cf. τέλειος, 1:28) comes only through connection to Christ하나님이 자라게 하시는 성장 (Hananim-i jarage hasineun seongjang) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk].
δογματίζεσθε (dogmatizesthe), 2:20submit to regulations/decreessubjecting oneself to imposed rules”submit to regulations,” “why do you submit to regulations”The false teachers’ imposed rule-system, inappropriate for those who have died with Christ to the “elemental spirits”규례에 순종하다 (gyurye-e sunjonghada) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Related to but distinct from ὑπακούω (household-code “obey,” ch.3) — here negative, rejected submission to human religious regulation.
ἐθελοθρησκία (ethelothrēskia), 2:23self-made/self-devised religion, “will-worship” (a rare Pauline coinage)religious devotion invented by human will rather than commanded by God”self-made religion,” “will-worship,” “false humility” (in some translations)Names the false teachers’ ascetic system as human self-invention masquerading as piety, valueless against actual sinful indulgence자의적 숭배 (jauijeok sungbae) — [NEW, CRITICAL/High risk]. A rare Pauline coined term requiring careful, explicit unpacking rather than a single-word gloss. Directly relevant to certain Korean fringe-Christian and folk-religious ascetic practices (extreme mountain-prayer fasting regimens, self-mortification practices sometimes observed at Korean prayer retreats, 기도원) that may be sincerely devout yet, per this verse, carry “an appearance of wisdom” while providing “no value against the indulgence of the flesh” if severed from union with Christ and grounded instead in human self-devised merit-seeking. Must be taught as a caution against self-invented religious discipline as a means of spiritual attainment, not as a blanket condemnation of fasting or bodily discipline undertaken in genuine gospel freedom.
ἀφειδία σώματος, πλησμονὴ τῆς σαρκός (apheidia sōmatos, plēsmonē tēs sarkos), 2:23severity/harsh treatment of the body, indulgence/satisfaction of the fleshascetic bodily harshness, ironically ineffective against actual sinful indulgence”severity to the body,” “against the indulgence of the flesh”Paul’s closing verdict on the false asceticism: outwardly impressive, but powerless to restrain actual sin몸을 괴롭게 함, 육체의 욕심을 막지 못함 (mom-eul goerobge ham, yukche-ui yoksim-eul makji motham) — [NEW, Medium risk].

Chapter 2 coverage note: all load-bearing terms addressed; this chapter carries the highest concentration of Critical-risk terms in the book, corresponding to its centrality for the “Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism” and “Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily” doctrines.

Chapter 3

Term (Greek/Translit)Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningKorean Rendering & Risk
ζητέω/φρονέω τὰ ἄνω (zēteō/phroneō ta anō), 3:1-2seek/set the mind on the things aboveorient one’s whole life-direction and thinking toward heavenly/eternal realities”seek the things that are above… set your minds on things that are above”The practical outworking of having been “raised with Christ” (3:1) — a reoriented life-direction, not otherworldly escapism위엣 것을 찾고, 생각하다 (wieот geoseul chatgo, saenggakhada) — [NEW, Medium risk]. Should be taught as a call to Christ-centered priorities within ordinary earthly life (cf. the household codes that immediately follow), not withdrawal from worldly responsibility.
ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν κέκρυπται σὺν τῷ Χριστῷ ἐν τῷ θεῷ (hē zōē hymōn kekryptai syn tō Christō en tō theō), 3:3your life has been hidden with Christ in Godbelievers’ true life and identity are presently concealed, secure in God, awaiting future disclosure”your life is hidden with Christ in God”Continues the “Union with Christ” doctrine (died/raised with Christ, 2:12, 20; 3:1, 3) — present hiddenness, future manifestation너희 생명이 그리스도와 함께 하나님 안에 감추어지다 (neohui saengmyeong-i Geuriseudo-wa hamkke Hananim an-e gamchueojida) — 감추다 (gamchuda, hidden) [NEW, Medium-High risk].
ὅταν ὁ Χριστὸς φανερωθῇ (hotan ho Christos phanerōthē), 3:4when Christ appears/is revealedChrist’s future, visible, glorious return”when Christ who is your life appears”The eschatological resolution of the present “hiddenness” of v.3 — believers will then also be revealed “with him in glory”Reuses 나타나다/φανερόω [NEW, see 1:26] and 영광 (yeonggwang) [TM REUSE]
νεκρόω τὰ μέλη (nekroō ta melē), 3:5put to death the members/partsdecisive, ongoing mortification of sinful practices, viewed as already-accomplished in principle through union with Christ’s death”put to death therefore what is earthly in you”The ethical outworking of having died with Christ (2:20; 3:3) — put to death, not merely suppress, sinful practice땅에 있는 지체를 죽이라 (ttang-e inneun jiche-reul jugira) — [NEW, Medium-High risk]. Must be distinguished from ascetic self-mortification as a means of merit (cf. 2:23’s ἐθελοθρησκία warning) — this “putting to death” flows from an already-accomplished union with Christ’s death, not a self-generated ascetic achievement.
πορνεία, ἀκαθαρσία, πάθος, ἐπιθυμία κακή, πλεονεξία ἥτις ἐστὶν εἰδωλολατρία (porneia, akatharsia, pathos, epithymia kakē, pleonexia hētis estin eidōlolatria), 3:5sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatrya vice catalogue culminating in the identification of covetousness/greed as a form of idolatry”sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry”The explicit equation of greed with idolatry — a direct point of contact with the letter’s anti-idolatry, anti-false-worship concern음란, 부정, 사욕, 악한 정욕, 탐심 곧 우상숭배 (eumnan, bujeong, sayok, akhan jeongyok, tamsim got usang sungbae) — 우상숭배 (usang sungbae, idolatry) [NEW, CRITICAL/High risk]. Directly and powerfully relevant to the Romans baseline’s already-established Critical concern regarding 기복신앙 (“fortune-seeking faith”) — the equation “covetousness = idolatry” gives Colossians its own sharp, independent warrant for teaching that materialistic, prosperity-oriented spiritual practice (seeking blessing/wealth as the functional center of one’s devotion) constitutes actual idol-worship, even when nominally directed toward the true God. This term should be taught in direct connection with the Romans baseline’s “grace” entry.
ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ (orgē tou theou), 3:6the wrath of GodGod’s righteous judicial response to sin”the wrath of God is coming”Grounds the seriousness of the preceding vice list in God’s actual future judgment, not merely social disapproval하나님의 진노 (Hananim-ui jinno) — [NEW, Medium-High risk]. Must be taught as the personal, righteous judicial anger of a holy God against sin — not to be confused with impersonal misfortune/bad luck (액운, already flagged as an inadequate substitute for “sin” in the Romans baseline) or ancestral-curse frameworks in Korean folk belief.
ἀπεκδυσάμενοι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἐνδυσάμενοι τὸν νέον (apekdysamenoi ton palaion anthrōpon, endysamenoi ton neon), 3:9-10having put off the old man/self, having put on the newa clothing metaphor for a definitive, already-accomplished change of identity, grounded in union with Christ’s death and resurrection”put off the old self… put on the new self”The curriculum’s core “Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New” doctrine — an identity-change already accomplished in Christ, worked out in ongoing practice옛 사람을 벗어 버리고, 새 사람을 입다 (yet saram-eul beoseo beorigo, sae saram-eul ipda) — [NEW, CRITICAL risk]. Must be taught as flowing directly from union with Christ (died/raised with him, 2:12, 20; 3:1, 3), NOT as a self-directed moral-improvement project comparable to Confucian self-cultivation toward becoming a “superior person” (군자, gunja, the Confucian ideal of moral gentleman-hood achieved through discipline, 수신 self-cultivation) or Buddhist enlightenment-transformation (해탈, 깨달음). The “old self / new self” exchange is a decisive, Christ-accomplished reality received by faith and then progressively lived out — not an incremental self-achieved character upgrade. Route to mandatory theologian review given the doctrine’s centrality to this curriculum.
ἀνακαινούμενον εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν κατ’ εἰκόνα τοῦ κτίσαντος (anakainoumenon eis epignōsin kat’ eikona tou ktisantos), 3:10being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its Creatorongoing Spirit-wrought renewal, restoring the believer toward the Creator’s own image”being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator”Directly links back to Christ as the “image [εἰκών] of the invisible God” (1:15) — believers are being progressively renewed into that same imageReuses 아는 것/ἐπίγνωσις [NEW, High, see 1:9] and 형상/εἰκών [NEW, High, see 1:15]
Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος — τὰ πάντα καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν Χριστός (3:11)Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free — Christ is all, and in allan exhaustive list of the ancient world’s major ethnic, religious, and social status-categories, all declared irrelevant to one’s standing in the “new self""Greek and Jew… Christ is all, and in all”Union with Christ in the “new self” abolishes all status-based distinctions as grounds for spiritual standing — directly parallels the Romans baseline’s “unity_of_jews_and_gentiles” doctrine, extended here to slave/free status as wellReuses 이방인/Gentile-adjacent concept [TM REUSE-adjacent, High risk per baseline’s “unity_of_jews_and_gentiles” entry]. Directly relevant caution: Korea’s historically powerful ethnic-nationalist self-conception (단일민족, “single ethnic nation,” already flagged High risk in the Romans baseline) risks softening this verse’s radical status-erasure into a merely diplomatic or aspirational statement rather than Paul’s actual claim that in the “new self,” no social, ethnic, or status category confers or denies spiritual standing.
ἐκλεκτοὶ τοῦ θεοῦ, ἅγιοι, ἠγαπημένοι (eklektoi tou theou, hagioi, ēgapēmenoi), 3:12God’s chosen ones, holy, beloveda triple identity-designation grounding the ethical exhortations that follow”God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved”Ethical exhortation flows from secure identity, not the reverse — believers act virtuously because of who they already are in Christ선택 (seontaek) [TM REUSE — Medium risk per baseline]; 거룩한 (georokan) [TM REUSE]; 사랑받는 자 (sarangbatneun ja, beloved) [NEW, Low risk]
σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ, χρηστότης, ταπεινοφροσύνη [positive], πραΰτης, μακροθυμία (splanchna oiktirmou, chrēstotēs, tapeinophrosynē, prautēs, makrothymia), 3:12bowels/inward parts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patiencea virtue catalogue for community life, deliberately answering the vice catalogue of 3:5, 8-9”compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience”The positive, Spirit-produced character of the “new self” — note ταπεινοφροσύνη here is positive, in deliberate contrast to its negative, self-devised sense in 2:18, 23긍휼, 자비, 겸손, 온유, 오래 참음 (geungyul, jabi, gyeomson, onyu, orae chameum) — [NEW, Medium-High risk]. Flag the dual usage of 겸손 (gyeomson, humility): genuine Christian humility here (positive) versus the false, self-devised humility of 2:18/23 (negative) — teaching should make this contrast explicit rather than treat “humility” as a uniformly safe, uniformly positive term throughout the letter.
ἀνέχομαι, χαρίζομαι ἑαυτοῖς (anechomai, charizomai heautois), 3:13bearing with, forgiving one anothermutual patient tolerance and active forgiveness within the community”bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other”Community ethics grounded explicitly in having been forgiven by the Lord (“as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive”)서로 용납하고 용서하다 (seoro yongnaphago yongseohada) — reuses χαρίζομαι [NEW, see 2:13]
ἀγάπη, σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος (agapē, syndesmos tēs teleiotētos), 3:14love, the bond of perfection/completenesslove as the unifying “bond” that ties every other virtue into a coherent, complete whole”put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony”Love as the culminating, unifying virtue — echoing τέλειος/completeness themes from 1:28 and 4:12Reuses 사랑/ἀγάπη [NEW, see 1:4]; 매는 띠 (maeneun tti, “binding band/bond”) [NEW, Medium risk]; reuses 온전한/τέλειος root [NEW, High, see 1:28]
ἡ εἰρήνη τοῦ Χριστοῦ βραβευέτω (hē eirēnē tou Christou brabeuetō), 3:15let the peace of Christ act as umpire/arbitrateChrist’s peace pictured as the deciding “umpire” governing community decisions and relationships”let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts”Christ’s peace, not personal preference or status-competition, is to govern community life in the “one body”그리스도의 평강이 마음을 주장하게 하라 (Geuriseudo-ui pyeonggang-i maeum-eul juganghage hara) — reuses 평강 (pyeonggang) [NEW, Medium risk, see 1:2 note]. Confirms the recommended KRV-consistent distinction: 화평 (Romans 5:1’s justification-secured peace with God) vs. 평강 (Colossians’ relational/communal peace, here Christ’s peace “ruling” or “acting as umpire” within the gathered body) — both are legitimate, textually-grounded, non-contradictory KRV renderings of εἰρήνη in different contexts; translators must apply the context-appropriate term rather than treating the two as interchangeable synonyms.
ὁ λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ, διδάσκοντες καὶ νουθετοῦντες (ho logos tou Christou, didaskontes kai nouthetountes), 3:16the word of Christ, teaching and admonishingScripture’s saturating presence in the community’s mutual instruction”let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another”Communal, mutual (not merely clergy-to-laity) instruction grounded in Christ’s wordReuses 훈계하다/νουθετέω [NEW, see 1:28]
ψαλμοῖς, ὕμνοις, ᾠδαῖς πνευματικαῖς (psalmois, hymnois, ōdais pneumatikais), 3:16psalms, hymns, spiritual songsvaried forms of Spirit-inspired communal singing”psalms and hymns and spiritual songs”The corporate worship expression of the word of Christ dwelling richly in the community시와 찬송과 신령한 노래 (si-wa chansong-gwa sillyeonghan norae) — [NEW, Low risk]. Standard KRV worship vocabulary.
ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου Ἰησοῦ, εὐχαριστοῦντες τῷ θεῷ (en onomati kyriou Iēsou, eucharistountes tō theō), 3:17in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to Godcomprehensive Christ-centered, God-directed orientation for all of life, “whatever you do, in word or deed""do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God”The comprehensive summary principle governing the whole ethical section (3:1-17), preceding the specific household codesReuses 주님 (junim) [TM REUSE — Critical/Medium per baseline] and 감사 (gamsa) [TM REUSE]
αἱ γυναῖκες, ὑποτάσσεσθε τοῖς ἀνδράσιν (hai gynaikes, hypotassesthe tois andrasin), 3:18wives, submit to [your] husbandsvoluntary, Christ-modeled submission within the marriage relationship, immediately paired with a command to husbands (v.19)“wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord”The first element of the “Household Codes” doctrine — submission qualified explicitly “as is fitting in the Lord,” i.e., a distinctively Christian, gospel-shaped submission아내들아 남편에게 복종하라 (anaedeul-a nampyeon-ege bokjonghara) — 복종하다 (bokjonghada, submit) [NEW, CRITICAL/High risk]. Must be taught within the letter’s full framework: (1) qualified explicitly “as is fitting in the Lord” (ἀνήκω, appropriate/fitting), not unconditional or unlimited; (2) always paired with the correlate command to husbands to love sacrificially and never to be embittered/harsh (v.19); (3) never used to justify domestic abuse, coercion, or the erasure of a wife’s dignity as a fellow “chosen, holy, and beloved” member of Christ’s body (3:12). Given Korea’s historically rigorous Confucian hierarchical family ethics — including the traditional, now-rejected “three obediences” (삼종지도) doctrine already flagged under “obedience_of_faith” in the Romans baseline — this term carries real risk of being read as reinforcing an uncritical patriarchal hierarchy rather than the distinctively gospel-qualified, mutually self-giving relationship Paul describes (note the balancing commands to husbands, fathers, and even masters that follow, each also gospel-qualified). Route to mandatory theologian review.
οἱ ἄνδρες, ἀγαπᾶτε τὰς γυναῖκας καὶ μὴ πικραίνεσθε (hoi andres, agapate tas gynaikas kai mē pikrainesthe), 3:19husbands, love [your] wives and do not be embittered/harsh toward themthe correlate command balancing v.18 — sacrificial love, explicitly warned against harshness”husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them”The husband’s command is no less binding than the wife’s — mutual, gospel-shaped household relationships, not one-directional authorityReuses 사랑/ἀγάπη [NEW, see 1:4]; 격노하다/모질게 하다 (gyeongnohada/mojilgehada, embitter/be harsh) [NEW, High risk] — must be taught with equal doctrinal weight to v.18, not treated as a lesser or optional companion instruction.
τὰ τέκνα, ὑπακούετε τοῖς γονεῦσιν (ta tekna, hypakouete tois goneusin), 3:20children, obey [your] parentsfilial obedience, qualified “in everything, for this pleases the Lord""children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord”Child-obedience is affirmed as pleasing to the Lord — but the motivation given is explicitly Christ-centered (“pleases the Lord”), not bare filial duty for its own sake or ancestor-honor자녀들아 부모에게 순종하라 (janyeodeul-a bumo-ege sunjonghara) — 순종하다 (sunjonghada, obey) [NEW, High risk]. Must be distinguished from the baseline’s existing “obedience of faith” (믿음의 순종) entry, which addresses a different referent (faith-produced obedience to God, not household obedience to parents) — though both draw on the same Korean Confucian filial-piety (효, hyo) risk landscape already flagged Critical/High in the Romans baseline. Teaching must make clear the motivation clause (“for this pleases the Lord,” ἐν κυρίῳ or τῷ κυρίῳ εὐάρεστόν) grounds this obedience in gospel devotion, not merely reinforcing pre-existing Confucian filial hierarchy or ancestor-veneration duty for its own sake.
οἱ πατέρες, μὴ ἐρεθίζετε τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν, ἵνα μὴ ἀθυμῶσιν (hoi pateres, mē erethizete ta tekna hymōn, hina mē athymōsin), 3:21fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discourageda check on paternal authority — fathers are warned against harsh, discouraging exercise of authority”fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged”The correlate limitation on parental authority, paralleling the husband’s limitation in v.19아비들아 자녀를 노엽게 하지 말라 (abideul-a janyeoreul noeopge haji malla) — [NEW, Medium risk].
οἱ δοῦλοι, ὑπακούετε κατὰ πάντα τοῖς κατὰ σάρκα κυρίοις (hoi douloi, hypakouete kata panta tois kata sarka kyriois), 3:22slaves, obey in everything [your] masters according to the fleshobedience owed to human masters, explicitly qualified as “according to the flesh” (i.e., earthly, temporal), distinguished from the “Lord” proper”bondservants, obey in everything your earthly masters”The most theologically delicate household-code instruction; note Paul’s own qualifying language already distinguishes the human “master” from the divine “Lord”종들아 육신의 상전에게 모든 일에 순종하라 (jongdeul-a yuksin-ui sangjeon-ege modeun il-e sunjonghara) — 종 (jong, slave/servant) [NEW, CRITICAL risk]. The Greek text itself uses κύριος for both the human “master” (κατὰ σάρκα κύριος, “master according to the flesh”) and the divine “Lord” (ὁ κύριος, v.23-24) within the same short passage — a deliberate Pauline wordplay contrasting the two. Korean translation MUST NOT use 주님 (junim, with its baseline-mandated honorific 님 suffix strictly reserved for God/Christ/Spirit) for the human slave-master; instead render κατὰ σάρκα κύριος as 육신의 상전 (yuksin-ui sangjeon, “earthly master”) or 주인 (juin, “master/owner,” without the honorific 님), clearly distinguishing it from 주님 used two verses later for Christ. Confusing these two terms would be a severe honorific-grammar and doctrinal error. This passage additionally requires careful contextual/historical framing regarding first-century slavery versus any modern application (a matter for the curriculum’s teaching notes rather than the translation itself) — flagged for mandatory theologian review given both the honorific-grammar risk and the passage’s broader interpretive sensitivity.
ὀφθαλμοδουλία, ἀνθρωπάρεσκοι, ἁπλότης καρδίας, φοβούμενοι τὸν κύριον (ophthalmodoulia, anthrōpareskoi, haplotēs kardias, phoboumenoi ton kyrion), 3:22eye-service, people-pleasers, singleness of heart, fearing the Lordoutward-only, performative obedience contrasted with sincere, wholehearted obedience motivated by reverence for the true Lord”not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord”The true motivation for household obedience is reverence for Christ, not human approval-seeking — directly relevant to Korean status/face-conscious social dynamics (체면, already flagged under “sin” in the Romans baseline)눈가림만 하는 일, 사람을 기쁘게 하는 자, 성실한 마음, 주를 두려워함 (nungarim-man haneun il, saram-eul gippeuge haneun ja, seongsilhan maeum, ju-reul duryeowoham) — [NEW, High risk]. Must clarify “fearing the Lord” here is reverent submission to Christ, correctly using 주님/κύριος [TM REUSE] — reinforcing the master/Lord distinction noted above.
ἐκ ψυχῆς ἐργάζεσθε ὡς τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ οὐκ ἀνθρώποις (ek psychēs ergazesthe hōs tō kyriō kai ouk anthrōpois), 3:23work from the soul, as to the Lord and not to menwholehearted labor, reoriented in its ultimate motivation toward Christ regardless of the immediate human recipient”whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men”Transforms even menial or forced labor (in its original slave/master context) into an act of service to Christ — dignifying the labor without endorsing the institution itselfReuses 주님 (junim) [TM REUSE]
ἀνταπόδοσις τῆς κληρονομίας (antapodosis tēs klēronomias), 3:24the recompense/reward of the inheritancea promised inheritance-reward from the Lord, given to those who serve faithfully — even to those denied an inheritance under human law (slaves)“you will receive the inheritance as your reward”A profound reversal: those excluded from inheritance rights under Roman law (slaves) are promised a full inheritance from the true Master — directly connecting to the “adoption”/inheritance doctrine already flagged Critical/High in the Romans baseline유업의 상 (yueop-ui sang) — reuses 유업/κληρονομία [NEW, High, see 1:12], directly connected to the Romans baseline’s Critical “adoption” (양자) entry: this inheritance is a gracious reward from Christ the true Master, not a continuation of a Confucian ancestral-inheritance system tied to jesa rites, and remarkably is extended even to those (slaves) excluded from ordinary human inheritance structures.
τῷ κυρίῳ Χριστῷ δουλεύετε (tō kyriō Christō douleuete), 3:24serve the Lord Christultimate service directed to Christ, the true Master, underlying and reframing all household service”you are serving the Lord Christ”The theological anchor for the whole household-code section: every human household relationship is ultimately reframed as service rendered to ChristReuses 주님/κύριος [TM REUSE]
ὁ ἀδικῶν κομίσεται ὃ ἠδίκησεν, προσωπολημψία (ho adikōn komisetai ho ēdikēsen, prosōpolēmpsia), 3:25the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong done, [there is] no partialityimpartial divine justice, applying equally regardless of social status (a significant qualifier following the slave/master instructions)“the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality”Even in the household-code section, God’s impartial justice applies to masters and slaves alike — no social status exempts anyone from accountability불의를 행한 자는 그 불의의 보응을 받으리니 외모로 사람을 취하심이 없느니라 (bului-reul haenghan janeun geu buluiui boeung-eul badeurini oemo-ro saram-eul chwihasimi eomneunira) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk].

Chapter 3 coverage note: all load-bearing terms addressed, including the full household-code section (3:18-25), which continues into Chapter 4:1.

τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα τοῖς δούλοις παρέχεσθε (to dikaion kai tēn isotēta tois doulois parechesthe), 4:1grant/provide to [your] slaves what is just and fairmasters are commanded to treat slaves with justice and fairness/equity, grounded in accountability to their own heavenly Master”masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly”Completes the household code with the master’s own obligation — the most direct check on the master’s power in the entire passage, grounded in the master’s own accountability to Christ의와 공평 (ui-wa gongpyeong) — [NEW, High risk]. Note τὸ δίκαιον here relates to, but is contextually distinct from, the baseline’s existing “righteousness” (의, Critical risk, forensic standing before God) entry — here it denotes fair, equitable treatment in a household-labor relationship, not justification. Teaching must distinguish these two senses of 의-related vocabulary clearly, per the Romans baseline’s own existing caution about 의 colliding with the social-loyalty-ethics concept 의리; here the sense is closer to simple distributive fairness (공평, gongpyeong) than to either forensic righteousness or reciprocal loyalty-ethics.
εἰδότες ὅτι καὶ ὑμεῖς ἔχετε κύριον ἐν οὐρανῷ (eidotes hoti kai hymeis echete kyrion en ouranō), 4:1knowing that you also have a Master in heavenmasters, too, are accountable to a higher Master — no one stands outside Christ’s lordship”since you know that you also have a Master in heaven”The theological ground for the master’s obligation of justice/fairness — reciprocal accountability under Christ’s ultimate lordshipReuses 주님/κύριος [TM REUSE], here specifically applied to the master’s own accountability.
τῇ προσευχῇ προσκαρτερεῖτε, γρηγοροῦντες ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν εὐχαριστίᾳ (tē proseuchē proskartereite, grēgorountes en autē en eucharistia), 4:2continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgivingpersistent, alert, thankful prayer”continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving”Paul’s closing instructions on sustained communal prayer life기도를 항상 힘쓰고 감사함으로 깨어 있으라 (gidoreul hangsang himsseugo gamsaham-euro kkaeeo itra) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk]. Reuses 감사/gamsa [TM REUSE].
θύραν τοῦ λόγου, λαλῆσαι τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ (thyran tou logou, lalēsai to mystērion tou Christou), 4:3a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christmetaphorical opportunity for gospel proclamation”an open door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ”Reinforces that the “mystery” (already carefully defined in 1:26-27 and 2:2 as Christ himself, openly proclaimed) is precisely what Paul seeks opportunity to preach — not to guard as a secretReuses 비밀/μυστήριον [NEW, Critical, see 1:26] — same critical framing applies: this “mystery” is something to be openly proclaimed to outsiders, the very opposite of an esoteric secret.
ἐν σοφίᾳ περιπατεῖτε πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω, τὸν καιρὸν ἐξαγοραζόμενοι (en sophia peripateite pros tous exō, ton kairon exagorazomenoi), 4:5walk in wisdom toward outsiders, redeeming/making the most of the time/opportunitywise, deliberate conduct toward non-believers, using opportunities well”walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time”Practical missional wisdom in relating to non-believers — reuses the letter’s wisdom (σοφία) and conduct (περιπατέω) vocabulary in an evangelistic applicationReuses 지혜/σοφία [NEW, High, see 1:9] and 행하다/περιπατέω [NEW, see 1:10]; 때를 아끼다 (ttaereul akkida, redeem the time) [NEW, Low-Medium risk].
ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν ἐν χάριτι, ἅλατι ἠρτυμένος (ho logos hymōn en chariti, halati ērtymenos), 4:6your speech [seasoned] with grace, seasoned with saltgracious, wise, appropriately “flavored” speech toward outsiders”let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt”Practical wisdom for evangelistic conversation — grace-filled, discerning speechReuses 은혜/χάρις [TM REUSE — Critical per baseline]; 소금으로 맛을 내다 (sogeum-euro mat-eul naeda, seasoned with salt) [NEW, Low risk, idiom requiring natural equivalent handling per the baseline’s idiom-handling rules].
διάκονος, σύνδουλος, πιστὸς διάκονος (diakonos, syndoulos, pistos diakonos), 4:7minister/servant, fellow servant, faithful ministerterms of ministry-service and co-laboring, applied to Tychicus and others”faithful minister and fellow servant”Commendation of gospel co-workers — dignifying service-titles within the church일꾼/집사, 함께 종 된 자, 신실한 일꾼 (ilkkun/jipsa, hamkke jong doen ja, sinsilhan ilkkun) — [NEW, Low-Medium risk].
ἐκκλησία κατ’ οἶκον (ekklēsia kat’ oikon), 4:15the church in [someone’s] housea local house-church gathering”the church in her house”The local, congregational sense of ἐκκλησία, alongside the universal sense used in 1:18, 24Reuses 교회/ekklēsia [TM REUSE] — flag the local/universal distinction for consistent contextual handling.

Chapter 4 coverage note: all load-bearing terms addressed; the remainder of the chapter (4:7-18) consists chiefly of personal greetings, co-worker commendations, and travel/logistical notes involving proper names (Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas, Nympha, Archippus) with low independent doctrinal weight beyond terms already treated above (διάκονος, σύνδουλος, ἐκκλησία κατ’ οἶκον). No new theological vocabulary requiring separate treatment.
