Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Gospel of John (Korean)
Methodology
This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation and allusion in the Gospel of John, chapter by chapter (full-book coverage, John 1–21), together with messianic references, typological patterns, and explicit parallels to the Romans curriculum already localized into Korean under the baseline Language Package. Citations follow a normalizable <Book> <chapter>:<verse> format (e.g., “Isaiah 53:1”, “Genesis 15:6”) so they can be mapped programmatically to Korean Bible citation conventions (로마서, 창세기, 이사야서, etc.) at Phase 2 render time. Where a quotation or theme is shared between John and Romans, a specific rendering-consistency rule is recorded so that the same underlying Hebrew/Greek text receives an identical Korean rendering in both curricula, per the baseline’s cross-document consistency mandate (see 12_ai_translation_requirements.md, “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents”).
Translation sensitivity ratings reuse the baseline’s Critical/High/Medium/Low framework.
Part A — Chapter-by-Chapter OT Quotation and Allusion Matrix
John 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 1:1 | Deity & Pre-existence of Christ | The Word (Logos) | Echoes Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning God created…”) — the Word’s pre-existence is asserted in the very cadence of creation’s opening | High — 태초에 must retain the Genesis-echo; do not render as a vague “long ago” |
| John 1:14, 1:17 | Deity & Pre-existence; Grace and Law | The Word made flesh | Echoes Exodus 33:18-23; 34:6-7 — Moses’ request to see God’s glory, and God’s self-revelation as “abounding in steadfast love (ḥesed) and faithfulness (‘emet),” the OT root of “grace and truth” (은혜와 진리) | Critical — combines baseline 은혜 (Critical) with new term 진리; teach as fulfillment/continuity with Sinai revelation, not replacement of a defective Law |
| John 1:23 | Forerunner/Witness | John the Baptist | Direct quotation: Isaiah 40:3, “the voice of one crying in the wilderness” | Medium — standard messianic-forerunner text; established KRV OT wording should be reused verbatim |
| John 1:29, 1:36 | Substitutionary Death | John the Baptist, Jesus | Alludes to Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb) and Isaiah 53:7 (silent lamb led to slaughter) | High — see Part C Typology below; must not be rendered through a shamanistic offering-to-appease-spirits frame |
| John 1:45 | Messianic Fulfillment | Philip, Nathanael | Alludes to Deuteronomy 18:15 (the prophet like Moses) and the whole Law/Prophets corpus (“of whom Moses in the Law, and also the prophets, wrote”) | Medium |
| John 1:51 | Deity & Pre-existence; heavenly access | Jesus, Nathanael, Jacob | Alludes to Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder — angels ascending/descending) | High — Jesus identifies himself as the true meeting-point of heaven and earth, fulfilling the Bethel typology; must not be flattened to a generic vision reference |
John 2
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 2:17 | Zeal for God’s House / foreshadowed death | Jesus, disciples | Direct quotation: Psalm 69:9, “zeal for your house will consume me” | Medium — Psalm 69 is a suffering-righteous-one psalm reused messianically elsewhere in John (see 15:25, 19:28-29) |
| John 2:19-22 | Substitutionary Death & Resurrection | Jesus | Typological reapplication of the Jerusalem temple (cf. 1 Kings 8; Exodus 25-40) to Christ’s body | High — see Part C Typology |
John 3 (Core Passage, 3:1-21, plus 3:22-36)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 3:3, 3:5, 3:7 | New Birth and Regeneration | Jesus, Nicodemus | Strong background allusion (not direct quotation) to Ezekiel 36:25-27 (“I will sprinkle clean water on you… I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you”) and Ezekiel 37:1-14 (the Spirit-given life of dry bones) | Critical — Nicodemus, as “the teacher of Israel” (3:10), should have recognized this Ezekiel background; teaching materials must supply this OT connection explicitly, since it is not self-evident from the Korean text of John 3 alone |
| John 3:14 | Substitutionary Death (typology) | Jesus, Moses | Direct typological reference: Numbers 21:4-9 (the bronze serpent lifted up in the wilderness) | High — see Part C Typology; must retain the “look and live” faith-structure of the type |
| John 3:16, 3:36 | God’s Love for the World; Judgment | Jesus, “the world” | Echoes covenantal love language of Deuteronomy 7:7-8 and Jeremiah 31:3 (“I have loved you with an everlasting love”); 3:36’s “wrath of God” echoes the covenant-curse language of Deuteronomy 27-28 | Critical — see Part D for direct Romans 1:18/5:8 parallels |
| John 3:29 | Messianic Joy | John the Baptist | Echoes bridegroom imagery of Isaiah 62:5 and Hosea 2:19-20 (God/Messiah as bridegroom of his people) | Low-Medium |
John 4
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 4:5-6, 4:12 | Patriarchal background | Jacob, the Samaritan woman | Allusion to Genesis 33:18-19 (Jacob’s purchase of land at Shechem) and Genesis 48:22 (Jacob’s gift to Joseph) | Low — historical-geographical background |
| John 4:10-14 | Eternal Life; Holy Spirit (typological anticipation) | Jesus, the Samaritan woman | Echoes Isaiah 55:1 (“come, buy wine and milk without money”) and wilderness water-from-the-rock narratives (Exodus 17:1-7; Numbers 20:2-13) | Medium — see Part C Typology |
| John 4:20-24 | True Worship | Jesus, the Samaritan woman | Engages the Samaritan/Jerusalem worship-site controversy rooted in Deuteronomy 12:5 (the place the LORD will choose) | Medium |
| John 4:42 | Universal Scope of Salvation | Samaritan townspeople | Echoes universalizing prophetic texts such as Isaiah 49:6 (“a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth”) | Critical — see Part D for Romans 10:12-13 parallel |
John 5
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 5:17-18 | Deity of Christ; Sabbath | Jesus, Jewish leaders | Engages Genesis 2:2-3 (Sabbath rest) — Jesus’s claim “My Father is working until now, and I am working” implies ongoing divine activity beyond a static creation-Sabbath | Critical — a strong deity claim, flag for theologian review |
| John 5:31-39 | Testimony/Witness | Jesus, John the Baptist | Structural background in Deuteronomy 19:15 (matter established by two or three witnesses) | Medium |
| John 5:29 | Judgment; Resurrection | Jesus | Echoes Daniel 12:2 (“many who sleep… shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt”) | High — reuse baseline 부활; combine with 심판 |

| John 6:45 | New Birth / Spirit-taught | Jesus | Direct quotation: Isaiah 54:13, “they will all be taught by God” | Medium |
| John 6:51-58 | Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Echoes Passover-meal background (Exodus 12) reapplied to Christ’s self-giving death | High |
John 7

|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 7:2, 7:37-38 | Holy Spirit; Eternal Life | Jesus | Set during the Feast of Tabernacles (Leviticus 23:33-43), whose water-libation ceremony forms the backdrop; the “rivers of living water” saying echoes Isaiah 58:11, Zechariah 14:8, and Ezekiel 47:1-12 (life-giving water flowing from the temple) | High — narrator (7:39) explicitly identifies this water with the Spirit; must not be left as an untethered nature metaphor |
| John 7:42 | Messianic Promise | The crowd (debate) | Alludes to Micah 5:2 (Messiah from Bethlehem, David’s town) and 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic covenant) | Medium — reuse baseline davidic_covenant/seed_of_david framework |
John 8
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |

| John 8:17 | Testimony/Witness | Jesus, Jewish leaders | Direct citation of the legal principle in Deuteronomy 19:15 | Medium |
| John 8:31-58 | Sonship/spiritual lineage; Deity | Abraham, Jesus | Sustained engagement with the Abraham narrative (Genesis 12, 15, 17, 22); v.56 (“Abraham rejoiced to see my day”) alludes to Abraham’s forward-looking faith in Genesis 15:6; 17:17; 22:1-19 | High — connects to Romans 4’s use of Genesis 15:6; see Part D |
| John 8:44 | Judgment/spiritual paternity | Jesus, Jewish leaders | Alludes to Genesis 3:1-5 (the serpent’s deception) and Genesis 4:8 (Cain, “a murderer from the beginning”) | High — sensitive polemical text, theologian review recommended |
| John 8:58 | ”I Am” (absolute) — Deity & Pre-existence | Jesus, Abraham | Direct echo of Exodus 3:14 (LXX ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ὤν) | Critical — see semantic analysis; mandatory theologian review |
John 9
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 9:1-41 (throughout) | Judgment/Belief; signs | The man born blind, Jesus, Pharisees | Echoes messianic healing prophecies: Isaiah 29:18; 35:5; 42:7 (opening blind eyes as a sign of the messianic age) | High — must be read as fulfillment of specific prophetic hope, not a generic miracle story |
| John 9:2-3 | Suffering and God’s purposes | Jesus, disciples | Corrects a mechanical retribution-theology reading sometimes drawn from texts like Exodus 20:5 (generational consequence) or Deuteronomy 28 | Medium-High — helpfully counters an 인과응보 (karmic retribution) misreading; see baseline caution under krisis/judgment |
John 10
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 10:1-18 | ”I Am” — Good Shepherd; Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Direct typological engagement with Ezekiel 34:1-31 (God’s rebuke of Israel’s false shepherds and promise to shepherd his flock himself) and Psalm 23 | Critical — see Part C Typology |
| John 10:16 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles | Jesus | Anticipates Ezekiel 37:15-28 (the reunification of the two sticks/nations under one shepherd-king) | Medium-High — connects to Romans’ Jew/Gentile unity doctrine; see Part D |
| John 10:34 | Deity of Christ (argument from Scripture) | Jesus, Jewish leaders | Direct quotation: Psalm 82:6, “I said, you are gods” | High — a difficult a fortiori argument; must be handled with care so it does not appear to relativize Christ’s unique deity claim |
John 11
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 11:1-44 (throughout) | “I Am” — Resurrection and the Life | Jesus, Lazarus, Martha, Mary | Echoes Ezekiel 37:1-14 (dry bones raised to life by God’s Spirit/word) and Daniel 12:2 (resurrection to life) | Critical — reuse baseline 부활 |
| John 11:51-52 | Substitutionary Death (unwitting prophecy) | Caiaphas | Structural echo of substitution language found throughout Isaiah 53 (the one for the many) | Medium — reuse baseline prophecy |
John 12
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 12:13 | Messianic Kingship | The crowd | Direct quotation: Psalm 118:25-26 (“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”) | Medium — established liturgical quotation; Korean “호산나” transliteration standard |
| John 12:15 | Messianic Kingship (typology) | Jesus | Direct quotation: Zechariah 9:9 (“Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt”) | High — humble-king typology, contrasts worldly kingship expectations |
| John 12:27-28 | Substitutionary Death; Glory | Jesus | Echoes the anguish/glory pattern of Psalm 6:3-4 and the Isaianic Servant’s troubled soul (Isaiah 53:11) | Medium |
| John 12:38 | Judgment/Belief; Unbelief despite signs | Narrator, Isaiah | Direct quotation: Isaiah 53:1, “Lord, who has believed our report?” | Critical — this exact verse is also quoted at Romans 10:16; see Part E mandatory rendering-consistency rule |
| John 12:40 | Judgment/Belief (judicial hardening) | Narrator, Isaiah | Direct quotation: Isaiah 6:9-10 (blinded eyes, hardened heart) | High — theologian review recommended; must not read as arbitrary predetermination detached from prior willful unbelief (cf. John 3:19) |
John 13
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 13:18 | Substitutionary Death (betrayal foretold) | Jesus, Judas | Direct quotation: Psalm 41:9, “He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me” | Medium — establishes betrayal within the pattern of prophesied suffering |
| John 13:34-35 | God’s Love for the World (ethical outworking) | Jesus, disciples | Echoes Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor as yourself”), now re-grounded Christologically (“as I have loved you”) | Medium-High |
John 14–16
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 14:16-17, 14:26 | Holy Spirit as Counselor | Jesus | Background in Joel 2:28-29 (the promised outpouring of the Spirit) and Ezekiel 36:26-27 (new spirit given) | Critical — reuse baseline 성령; combine with new term 보혜사 |
| John 15:1-8 | Christ’s identity (“I Am” — True Vine); fruitfulness | Jesus | Direct typological reworking of Psalm 80:8-16 and Isaiah 5:1-7 (Israel as God’s vineyard/vine, which failed to bear fruit) | High — see Part C Typology; note the theological reversal (Christ succeeds where Israel-as-vine failed) |
| John 15:25 | Unjust suffering foretold | Jesus | Direct quotation: Psalm 35:19; 69:4, “they hated me without a cause” | Medium |
| John 16:21-22 | Eschatological joy | Jesus | Echoes childbirth-to-joy imagery of Isaiah 26:17; 66:7-10 | Low-Medium |
John 17
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 17:1-26 (throughout) | High priestly intercession; Unity of Father and Son | Jesus | Structural parallel to the Aaronic high priest’s intercessory role (Leviticus 16; Exodus 28:29, bearing the names of the people before the LORD) | High — connects to baseline intercession (중보기도) vocabulary family, now applied uniquely to Christ’s own priestly prayer |
| John 17:5 | Deity & Pre-existence | Jesus | Echoes the pre-temporal glory language implicit in Proverbs 8:22-31 (wisdom “before the beginning of the earth”) | Critical — direct pre-existence claim |
| John 17:11, 21-22 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Jesus | Echoes the foundational monotheistic confession of Deuteronomy 6:4 (“the LORD our God, the LORD is one”) — John does not abandon Jewish monotheism but locates a Father-Son-Spirit unity within it | Critical — see Part D and rendering-consistency notes on 하나 (one) |
John 18–19 (Passion Narrative)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 18:5-8 | ”I Am” (absolute) — Deity | Jesus, the arresting party | Same Exodus 3:14 echo as 8:58 | Critical |
| John 19:24 | Substitutionary Death (fulfillment) | Roman soldiers | Direct quotation: Psalm 22:18, “they divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots” | High — Psalm 22 is the single most extensively fulfilled psalm in the Passion narratives |
| John 19:28 | Substitutionary Death (fulfillment) | Jesus | Direct allusion: Psalm 69:21, “for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink” | Medium |
| John 19:36 | Substitutionary Death (typology fulfilled) | Jesus | Direct quotation (composite): Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20 (“not one of his bones will be broken”) | High — direct fulfillment of Passover lamb typology (see Part C) |
| John 19:37 | Substitutionary Death; future recognition | Roman soldier, narrator | Direct quotation: Zechariah 12:10, “they will look on him whom they have pierced” | High — also has eschatological resonance (cf. Revelation 1:7, outside this curriculum’s immediate scope but worth a translator’s cross-reference note) |
John 20–21
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 20:22 | Holy Spirit; New Creation | Jesus, disciples | Echoes Genesis 2:7 (“the LORD God… breathed into his nostrils the breath of life”) — Jesus as the source of new-creation life, paralleling the first creation | High — must retain the new-creation echo in teaching material even though the bare Korean verb 불어넣다/숨을 내쉬다 does not carry the allusion lexically |
| John 20:28 | Deity of Christ (worship confession) | Thomas | Climactic fulfillment of the Gospel’s opening claim (John 1:1) — functions as an inclusio | Critical |
| John 21:15-17 | Restoration; Pastoral commissioning | Jesus, Peter | Echoes Ezekiel 34:11-16 (God himself shepherding and seeking the lost sheep), now delegated to Peter under Christ’s authority | Medium — connects back to John 10 and Ezekiel 34 |
Part B — Messianic References Summary
| Messianic Title/Motif | Key John Passages | OT Source | Korean Rendering | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prophet like Moses | 1:21, 1:25, 1:45; 6:14; 7:40 | Deuteronomy 18:15-18 | 그 선지자 | Distinguish from a generic 선지자 (prophet); “the Prophet” here is a specific end-time messianic expectation |
| Lamb of God | 1:29, 1:36 | Exodus 12; Isaiah 53:7 | 하나님의 어린양 | See baseline entry; substitutionary sacrifice, God’s own provision |
| Son of God / King of Israel | 1:49 | 2 Samuel 7:14; Psalm 2:7 | 하나님의 아들 / 이스라엘의 왕 | Reuse baseline son_of_god exactly |
| Bridegroom | 3:29 | Isaiah 62:5; Hosea 2:19-20 | 신랑 | |
| Messiah/Christ | 1:41; 4:25-26, 29, 42; 7:41-42; 11:27 | General messianic expectation; 2 Samuel 7; Micah 5:2 | 메시아 / 그리스도 | Reuse baseline messiah framework |
| Davidic King entering Zion | 12:13, 12:15 | Zechariah 9:9; Psalm 118:25-26 | (see John 12 matrix) | Humble-king typology |
| Suffering Servant | 1:29; 12:38; implicit throughout Passion (chs. 18-19) | Isaiah 52:13-53:12 | 고난받는 종 (as needed in teaching notes; not a standing translation-memory term) | Foundational to Substitutionary Death doctrine |
| Good Shepherd-King | 10:1-18; 21:15-17 | Ezekiel 34:23-24 (“my servant David shall be prince/shepherd among them”) | 선한 목자 | Merges Davidic and shepherding motifs |
| I AM (divine self-existence) | 8:24, 28, 58; 13:19; 18:5-6, 8 | Exodus 3:14; Isaiah 43:10-13 | 내가 있느니라 | Highest-stakes messianic/deity claim in the Gospel |
Part C — Typological Patterns
| OT Type | OT Passage | NT Antitype (John) | Theological Point | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze serpent | Numbers 21:4-9 | John 3:14-15 | As Israel looked to the raised serpent for physical healing, all who look to the raised Christ receive eternal life | High — must retain the “lifted up = both crucified and glorified” double sense; not a magical amulet-like object of power in itself, but a pointer to trust in God’s provision |
| Passover lamb | Exodus 12:1-13, 46 | John 1:29, 36; 19:14 (crucified at the hour lambs were slaughtered), 19:36 | Christ is the true, once-for-all Passover sacrifice whose blood delivers from judgment | High — see baseline lamb_of_god caution against shamanistic offering framing |
| Manna | Exodus 16:1-36; Psalm 78:24 | John 6:31-58 | Christ is the true bread from heaven, superior to manna (which only sustained physical life temporarily) | High — 생명의 떡 must be taught as surpassing, not merely repeating, the wilderness provision |
| Tabernacle/Temple, dwelling glory | Exodus 25-40; 1 Kings 8:10-11 | John 1:14 (σκηνόω, “tabernacled”); John 2:19-21 (Christ’s body as the temple) | God’s presence now dwells uniquely and permanently in the incarnate Word, and in Christ’s resurrected body, not a building | High — connects to baseline church caution against shrine/temple confusion (당집/절) |
| Jacob’s ladder | Genesis 28:10-17 | John 1:51 | Christ himself is the meeting-place of heaven and earth, replacing Bethel | Medium-High |
| Shepherd of Israel | Ezekiel 34; Psalm 23 | John 10:1-18; 21:15-17 | God’s own promised shepherding of his flock is fulfilled in Christ, and delegated pastorally to Peter | Critical — ties directly to Substitutionary Death doctrine (10:11) |
| Vine/vineyard | Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7 | John 15:1-8 | Israel as God’s vine repeatedly failed to bear fruit; Christ is the “true” (ἀληθινή) vine who succeeds, and believers bear fruit only through union with him | High — theological reversal must be made explicit in teaching notes |
| Water from the rock / living water | Exodus 17:1-7; Numbers 20:2-13; Isaiah 55:1; Ezekiel 47:1-12 | John 4:10-14; 7:37-39 | Christ (and the Spirit he gives) satisfies spiritual thirst permanently, fulfilling prophetic hope of eschatological life-giving water | Medium-High |
| Aaronic high priestly intercession | Leviticus 16; Exodus 28 | John 17 | Christ’s prayer for his people functions as a superior, direct high-priestly intercession | High |
| Breath of life at creation | Genesis 2:7 | John 20:22 | Christ’s giving of the Spirit is a new-creation act, parallel to God’s original life-giving breath | High |
Part D — Parallels to the Romans Curriculum (Korean Language Pipeline)
The following table records passages where John and Romans treat the same doctrine, quote the same OT text, or use closely related vocabulary already fixed in the baseline translation_memory.json. These parallels require identical or harmonized Korean rendering across both curricula.
| John Passage | Romans Passage | Shared Theme / Term | Korean Rendering Consistency Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| John 3:16 | Romans 5:8 | God’s self-giving love demonstrated toward sinners/the world | Both use 사랑하다 (ἀγαπάω); the self-giving, non-transactional sense established in baseline grace notes applies equally here |
| John 3:16-17; 4:42 | Romans 10:12-13; 3:22-23 | Universal, unqualified scope of salvation (“whoever believes,” “everyone who calls”) | Reuse baseline universal_scope_of_gospel caution against 단일민족 (ethnic-nationalist) softening; render 믿는 자마다 identically in both curricula |
| John 3:36 | Romans 1:18 | The wrath of God against unbelief/unrighteousness | Both render 하나님의 진노; must be taught as a personal judicial response, not impersonal karmic force (identical caution in both baseline providence/judgment notes) |
| John 1:12-13 | Romans 8:14-17 | Becoming children of God vs. adoption as sons | Distinguish: John 1:12-13 uses τέκνα θεοῦ (하나님의 자녀, “children” by reception/faith), Romans 8:15 uses υἱοθεσία (baseline 양자, “adoption” as legal sonship); both describe the same reality from different angles — teaching materials should harmonize rather than present as contradictory |
| John 5:24 | Romans 8:1 | No condemnation/judgment for the believer | John’s “does not come into judgment” (심판에 이르지 아니하나니) and Romans’ “no condemnation” (정죄함이 없나니) describe the same assurance; use consistent theological framing though the Korean lexical choices differ by established KRV convention in each book |
| John 8:32, 34-36 | Romans 6:16-22 | Freedom from slavery to sin through Christ/truth | Reuse baseline 죄 (sin) and note 종 (slave) consistently; freedom is deliverance from sin’s mastery, not political or generic personal liberty in either curriculum |
| John 8:39, 56 | Romans 4:1-3, 16-17 | Abraham’s faith vs. mere physical descent; Genesis 15:6 background | Romans 4:3 directly quotes Genesis 15:6 (“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”); John 8:56 alludes to the same Abraham narrative. Teaching should cross-reference explicitly: true children of Abraham are marked by Abraham-like faith, not lineage — identical point made from Genesis 15 in Romans and from the Abraham dialogues in John |
| John 10:11 | Romans 5:6-8 | Christ’s voluntary substitutionary death for his own | Reuse baseline substitutionary vocabulary family; 목숨을 버리다 (lay down life) and 위하여 죽으시다 (died for) should be taught as expressing the same atonement doctrine |
| John 12:38 | Romans 10:16 | Direct shared OT quotation: Isaiah 53:1, “Lord, who has believed our report?” | MANDATORY: render the Isaiah 53:1 quotation identically in both curricula, matching the established KRV Old Testament wording exactly. This is the clearest word-for-word quotation overlap between the two curricula’s source material (see Part E) |
| John 1:1; 20:28 | Romans 9:5 | Explicit deity of Christ (“the Word was God”; “my Lord and my God”; “Christ, who is God over all”) | Reuse baseline 하나님 (Critical) applied directly to Christ in both books; theologian review required at every occurrence in both curricula |
| John 20:31 | Romans 1:16-17 | Curriculum thesis/purpose statement | Both function as the respective book’s programmatic thesis verse; per baseline precedent (identical rendering required for thesis verses across all documents), John 20:31’s Korean rendering must be fixed once and reused identically in every Phase 2 John document |
| John 14:16-17, 26; 16:7-14 | Romans 8:26-27 | The Holy Spirit’s helping/interceding ministry for believers | Reuse baseline 성령 (Critical); 보혜사 (Paraclete) and Romans’ Spirit-intercession language describe complementary aspects of the same Person’s work — teaching should link them |
| John 15:4-10 | Romans 11:22 | Abiding/continuing in Christ’s love and kindness as a condition of ongoing fruitfulness | 거하다 (abide) and Romans’ “continue in his kindness” (그의 인자하심에 머물러 있으라) share the same relational-dependence logic; reinforce the anti-attachment-transcendence caution already flagged for 거하다 |
| John 4:23-24 | Romans 12:1 | Worship as inward, God-oriented reality rather than location/ritual-bound performance | 영과 진리로 드리는 예배 (worship in spirit and truth) and Romans’ “spiritual/reasonable worship” (영적 예배) both resist a merely ritual-performance understanding of worship |
| John 12:31; 16:33 | Romans 8:37-39 | Christ’s decisive victory over hostile cosmic powers (“ruler of this world” / nothing able to separate believers from God’s love) | Distinct vocabulary (이 세상의 임금 vs. baseline providence/assurance language) but the same theological ground: the victory is already secured in Christ |
| John 17:11, 21-22 | Romans 12:4-5 | Unity of believers | Distinguish carefully: John 17’s unity is grounded directly in, and patterned after, the Father-Son essential unity (10:30) — a uniquely Christological/Trinitarian ground; Romans 12:4-5’s “one body” unity is a functional, gifts-based unity among diverse members. Do not collapse these into an identical concept; John’s grounding is ontologically deeper |
| John 3:3-8 | Romans 6:4 | New birth / newness of life | 거듭나다 (born again) and “walk in newness of life” (새 생명 가운데서 행하게 하려 함이라) describe the same regenerative reality from different angles (origin vs. resulting conduct); teach as complementary, not redundant |
Part E — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations
- Isaiah 53:1 (quoted at John 12:38 and Romans 10:16): the Korean Old Testament text of Isaiah 53:1 must be rendered identically in both curricula’s quotation blocks, matching the established KRV Isaiah 53:1 wording exactly. A cross-reference footnote should note the shared quotation in both directions (John → Romans; Romans → John) for translator awareness at Phase 2.
- Genesis 15:6 (directly quoted at Romans 4:3; thematically alluded to at John 8:56, without direct quotation in John): John’s allusion should be rendered so as to echo, without literally quoting, the Genesis 15:6 language already fixed by the Romans package’s
imputed_righteousnessentry — i.e., do not introduce a competing Korean phrase for “counted/credited righteousness” if John’s text is ever paraphrased or footnoted with this background. - Habakkuk 2:4 (“the righteous shall live by faith,” quoted at Romans 1:17; not directly quoted in John but thematically resonant with John’s ζωὴ αἰώνιος/πιστεύω pairing throughout, esp. 3:15-16, 5:24, 6:47, 11:25-26, 20:31): no direct quotation-rendering conflict exists, but teaching materials cross-referencing Romans 1:17 alongside John’s faith/life texts should use 믿음 (faith) and 살다/생명 (live/life) consistently with the Romans rendering.
- Deuteronomy 6:4 (the Shema, “the LORD our God, the LORD is one” — not directly quoted in either book but the monotheistic backdrop for both Romans 3:29-30 [“is God the God of Jews only?… he is one,” referencing the same Shema logic] and John 10:30/17:11,21-22 [“I and the Father are one”]): translators must ensure the Korean word 하나 (“one”) in John’s unity texts is not read as contradicting or replacing 하나님 (“God,” built on 하나 + 님) — the Trinitarian unity-in-distinction claim must be taught as internal to, not a departure from, the Shema’s monotheism already assumed throughout Romans.
- Psalm 118:25-26 (“Hosanna… blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,” quoted at John 12:13; also echoed at Romans 15:11’s catena of OT praise-quotations, though not the identical verse): where both curricula’s teaching materials discuss OT praise-quotations fulfilled in Christ, use a harmonized transliteration convention for “호산나” (Hosanna) consistent with established KRV usage.
- General rule: whenever any Phase 2 John document quotes an Old Testament verse that is also quoted anywhere in the Romans curriculum’s translated material, the translator must first check the Romans output for that verse’s existing Korean rendering and reuse it verbatim, rather than independently retranslating the Old Testament source text. This applies even where the New Testament author’s citation differs slightly from the Masoretic Text/LXX wording, since both curricula should present a single harmonized Korean Old Testament citation layer to the learner.
Part F — Citation Normalization Reference
All citations in this document and downstream Phase 2 materials should be normalizable to <English Book Name> <chapter>:<verse> (e.g., “Genesis 15:6”, “Isaiah 53:1”, “John 3:16”) for cross-referencing tooling, with Korean Bible book names applied only at final render time per the following mapping (extending the baseline’s existing table):
| English | Korean |
|---|---|
| Genesis | 창세기 |
| Exodus | 출애굽기 |
| Leviticus | 레위기 |
| Numbers | 민수기 |
| Deuteronomy | 신명기 |
| 2 Samuel | 사무엘하 |
| 1 Kings | 열왕기상 |
| Psalms | 시편 |
| Proverbs | 잠언 |
| Isaiah | 이사야서 |
| Jeremiah | 예레미야서 |
| Ezekiel | 에스겔서 |
| Daniel | 다니엘서 |
| Hosea | 호세아서 |
| Joel | 요엘서 |
| Amos | 아모스서 |
| Micah | 미가서 |
| Habakkuk | 하박국서 |
| Zechariah | 스가랴서 |
| John | 요한복음 |
| Romans | 로마서 |
Verse numbers remain Arabic numerals throughout, per baseline convention.
