Cross-Reference Analysis
2 Peter Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis
Scope and Method
This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference and typological pattern, and every significant parallel to other books in this language package’s curriculum (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians) found across all three chapters of 2 Peter. Romans receives special attention because it is this package’s established language authority; every rendering-consistency rule below is written to protect exact term-reuse with the baseline translation_memory.json rather than create a competing standard.
Citations follow the normalizable “Book Chapter:Verse” convention used throughout this pipeline (e.g., “Genesis 15:6,” “Romans 4:3”), matching the citation style already used in doctrine_risk_registry.json’s primary_passages fields. In the actual Korean-language deliverables (Phase 2), citations render as 로마서 3:23 per the established convention in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md; this analysis document itself remains in the English citation format for cross-referencing purposes.
No chapter of 2 Peter lacks OT background or NT parallel material; all three chapters are covered below.
Part 1 — Direct Old Testament Quotations
| 2 Peter Passage | OT Source | Quotation Type | Theme | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Peter 1:17 | Psalm 2:7 (“You are my Son”) + Isaiah 42:1 (“my chosen, in whom my soul delights”) — composite echo | Near-verbatim composite quotation, also echoed at the Baptism (Matthew 3:17, Mark 1:11, Luke 3:22) and the Transfiguration itself (Matthew 17:5, Mark 9:7, Luke 9:35) | Deity/Sonship of Christ, Certainty of Christ’s Return | Must render consistently with baseline son_of_god (하나님의 아들) and reuse the Dangun-myth caution already established. Ensure the Korean rendering of “beloved Son… well pleased” matches the wording that will be used when Matthew/Mark/Luke (same curriculum set) render their own Transfiguration/Baptism accounts, so learners recognize the same divine declaration across four books. |
| 2 Peter 2:22 | Proverbs 26:11 (“As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly”) | Direct, explicit quotation | False Teachers and Their Judgment | KRV’s existing proverbial rendering (“개가 그 토하였던 것에 돌아가고”) is stable and low-risk; ensure the same Korean wording is used if Proverbs 26:11 is independently quoted or referenced elsewhere in this language package’s OT materials, for cross-document consistency. |
| 2 Peter 3:8 | Psalm 90:4 (“a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday”) | Direct, explicit quotation | Patience of God’s Timing, Day of the Lord | Render to preserve the point that God’s “delay” is measured on a wholly different scale than human time — this must reinforce, not undercut, the 오래 참으심 (μακροθυμία) rendering’s caution against a fatalistic 팔자/운명 reading (see baseline providence). |
| 2 Peter 3:13 | Isaiah 65:17; Isaiah 66:22 (“new heavens and a new earth”) | Near-verbatim echo, not introduced with an explicit citation formula but widely recognized as a direct allusion bordering on quotation | The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | Use 새 하늘과 새 땅 consistently; flag that this is a renewed, not annihilated, creation — continuous with Isaiah’s own prophetic hope, not a Buddhist kalpa-cycle world-age replacement (see 08_core_glossary.md note). |
Part 2 — Old Testament Allusions and Typological Echoes (By Chapter)
Chapter 1
| 2 Peter Passage | OT/Typological Connection | Related Character(s) | Theme | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Peter 1:16-18 | Exodus 24:15-18 (Moses on the mountain, the glory-cloud); Exodus 34:29-35 (Moses’ face shining with reflected glory); Daniel 7:9-14 (divine glory/majesty imagery) | Moses, Jesus, Peter/James/John | Reliability of Scripture; Certainty of Christ’s Return | The “holy mountain” (거룩한 산) echoes Sinai typologically — God’s glory manifesting at a specific place and time, not a resident territorial spirit. Reinforce the caution against Korean mountain-spirit veneration (산신령, 산신제) already flagged in 07_semantic_analysis.md. |
| 2 Peter 1:19 | Numbers 24:17 (“a star shall come out of Jacob”) — Balaam’s own messianic oracle | Balaam (ironic connection: ch. 2 later condemns Balaam by name) | Certainty of Christ’s Return | 샛별 (morning star) should be taught with its OT messianic-prophecy background explicit, guarding against drift toward Korean astrological (사주팔자, 점성술) associations, per 08_core_glossary.md. |
| 2 Peter 1:21 | General prophetic-inspiration pattern (Jeremiah 1:4-9; Isaiah 6:1-9; Ezekiel 1-3) — the prophet as one who receives and speaks God’s word, not his own | OT prophets collectively | Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture | Supports the 성령의 감동하심 (φερόμενοι) rendering: the OT prophetic pattern itself shows a personal God commissioning conscious human speakers, not a spirit “riding” a passive medium — useful positive background to cite against shamanistic spirit-possession misreadings. |
Chapter 2
| 2 Peter Passage | OT/Typological Connection | Related Character(s) | Theme | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Peter 2:1 | Deuteronomy 13:1-5; Deuteronomy 18:20-22 (test of a true vs. false prophet) | Moses (lawgiver), false prophets generally | False Teachers and Their Judgment | Background for 거짓 선지자/거짓 교사 (see 08_core_glossary.md); the OT already establishes objective doctrinal/behavioral tests for false prophets, which grounds 2 Peter 2’s own criteria rather than mere institutional labeling (relevant to the 이단 caution). |
| 2 Peter 2:1 | Exodus 15:16 (“the people whom you have purchased”); redemption-by-purchase language pattern | Israel (Exodus generation) | False Teachers and Their Judgment; Deity of Christ | Background for δεσπότης/주님 (Master) — “bought” language in 2:1 draws on OT redemption-purchase imagery, reinforced in the NT curriculum by 1 Corinthians 6:20 and 1 Corinthians 7:23 (“bought with a price”). Consistency note below in Part 4. |
| 2 Peter 2:4 | Genesis 6:1-4 (“the sons of God… saw the daughters of man”) | Fallen angels | False Teachers and Their Judgment | Background for 지옥/Τάρταρος rendering (see 08_core_glossary.md); the Genesis account itself gives no underworld-bureaucracy detail — 2 Peter’s addition (“cast them into Tartarus,” “chains of gloomy darkness”) must not be filled in with Korean folk-Buddhist Ten-Kings (시왕) or shamanistic underworld imagery not present in the biblical text. |
| 2 Peter 2:5 | Genesis 6:5-22; Genesis 7:1-24; Genesis 8:1-22 (Noah, the ark, the Flood); Noah as “herald of righteousness” is a distinctively Petrine/apostolic characterization beyond Genesis’s bare narrative | Noah | False Teachers and Their Judgment; Day of the Lord (typological parallel developed in ch. 3) | 홍수 (flood) must remain a historical, real judgment-event; Noah as “herald of righteousness” (의의 전한 자, using baseline 의 exactly) — reinforce that Noah proclaimed God’s righteous warning, not social-loyalty ethics (의리), per baseline righteousness caution. |
| 2 Peter 2:6-8 | Genesis 19:1-29 (Sodom and Gomorrah’s destruction; Lot’s rescue) | Lot | False Teachers and Their Judgment; Day of the Lord (explicit “example,” ὑπόδειγμα) | The text’s own term ὑπόδειγμα (“example/pattern,” 본보기) makes this an explicit, self-identified typological warning for future judgment — teaching material should make this typological function explicit rather than treat it as a standalone historical footnote. |
| 2 Peter 2:15-16 | Numbers 22:1-24:25, especially Numbers 22:28-30 (the donkey speaks); Numbers 31:16 (Balaam’s later corruption of Israel); Deuteronomy 23:4-5 | Balaam | False Teachers and Their Judgment | 발람 (Balaam), standard transliteration. Balaam functions in Scripture as a recurring type of the mercenary false prophet — also invoked independently elsewhere in the broader canon (Revelation 2:14, outside this curriculum), reinforcing the seriousness of the type. |
Chapter 3
| 2 Peter Passage | OT/Typological Connection | Related Character(s) | Theme | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Peter 3:2 | Prophetic-canon-consciousness pattern already established in 1:19-21 | OT prophets, apostles | Reliability of Scripture | Direct continuation of 1:19-21’s doctrine; no new rendering risk beyond what is already documented for 예언/성경. |
| 2 Peter 3:4 | Psalm 42:3, 10 (“Where is your God?”); general scoffer/doubt motif | Psalmist (implicit parallel, not quoted) | The Certainty of Christ’s Return | The scoffers’ rhetorical question in 3:4 echoes a recurring OT pattern of faith tested by apparent divine delay; teaching material may note this parallel to give pastoral context without implying a direct quotation. |
| 2 Peter 3:5-6 | Genesis 1:6-9 (waters separated at creation); Genesis 7:11 (“the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened”); Genesis 7:17-24 (the Flood’s devastation) | Noah (recalled from ch. 2) | Day of the Lord; Certainty of Christ’s Return | Establishes the chapter’s typological argument: creation and the Flood (past, historical, water-judgment) become the pattern for the future fire-judgment. Render consistently with 2:5’s 홍수. |
| 2 Peter 3:7, 10, 12 | Isaiah 34:4 (the heavens rolled up); Zephaniah 1:14-18 (the great day of the Lord, a day of wrath); Zephaniah 3:8 (fire of jealousy consuming the earth); Malachi 4:1 (the day burning like an oven) | — | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | These OT “Day of the Lord” oracles are the direct prophetic background for 주의 날 (ἡμέρα κυρίου). Teaching must connect 2 Peter 3 explicitly to this OT prophetic tradition so the doctrine is received as the fulfillment of a long-standing biblical expectation, not a novel Petrine invention. |
| 2 Peter 3:9 | Ezekiel 18:23; Ezekiel 33:11 (“I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked… turn back… and live”) | — | Patience of God’s Timing | Direct conceptual parallel: God’s patience/delay in both Ezekiel and 2 Peter 3:9 is explicitly relational and merciful, not fated or mechanical — reinforces the 오래 참으심 rendering note against 팔자/운명 misreadings. |
| 2 Peter 3:10 | Joel 2:1-2, 2:31; Amos 5:18-20; Zephaniah 1:14-18 — the “Day of the Lord” prophetic tradition as a whole; also “as a thief” pattern shared with Matthew 24:43, Luke 12:39 (both outside strict OT scope but part of the same NT motif, see Part 4) | — | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | Confirms 주의 날 as the terminus of a long OT prophetic trajectory; the “thief” suddenness image must be rendered so as not to be softened, per the baseline validation-rule pattern for universality/certainty claims. |
| 2 Peter 3:13 | (see Part 1 — Isaiah 65:17; 66:22, direct quotation) | — | Day of the Lord and Final Judgment | See Part 1. |
| 2 Peter 3:15-16 | Not an OT reference, but a direct meta-canonical reference to Paul’s letters (which include this pipeline’s own baseline book, Romans) as “the other Scriptures” | Paul | Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture | See Part 4 below for the dedicated Romans-parallel treatment; this verse gives explicit apostolic warrant for treating Romans and 2 Peter within a single, mutually reinforcing canon of inspired Scripture. |
Part 3 — Messianic References and Typology Summary
| Pattern | Passages | Type / Antitype | Theological Significance | Translation Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transfiguration as preview of the Parousia | 2 Peter 1:16-18 (cf. Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8; Luke 9:28-36) | Type: the momentary unveiling of Christ’s glory on the mountain; Antitype: the full, final, visible glory of Christ’s return (재림) | Grounds the certainty of Christ’s future coming in verified apostolic eyewitness of a real historical preview | Keep 강림 (this specific Transfiguration-preview coming) distinct from 재림 (the future Second Coming) per 08_core_glossary.md, while teaching their typological connection explicitly. |
| The Star out of Jacob | Numbers 24:17 → 2 Peter 1:19 (샛별) | Type: Balaam’s messianic oracle; Antitype: Christ’s own person and coming, personally appearing in believers’ hearts | Ties Christ’s return to a very old, specific messianic promise, not a generic astral metaphor | Reinforce 샛별’s messianic background against any astrological drift. |
| The Flood as pattern for final judgment | Genesis 6-8 → 2 Peter 2:5; 3:5-7 | Type: God’s historical judgment of the world by water; Antitype: God’s future judgment of the world by fire (주의 날) | Establishes 2 Peter’s central argument: because the first judgment was historical and real, the second (still future) judgment is equally certain | Both 홍수 (flood) and the fire-judgment vocabulary must be taught as one continuous typological argument, not two unrelated images. |
| Noah’s household (“eight persons”) as a remnant saved through judgment | Genesis 7:1, 7, 13 → 2 Peter 2:5; cf. also 2 Peter 3:6 | Type: a small righteous remnant preserved through the very judgment that destroys the world | Assurance that God distinguishes the righteous from the wicked even within a single sweeping judgment | Supports the doctrine of Assurance (cross-referenced to Romans baseline assurance_of_salvation) without contradicting it. |
| Sodom and Gomorrah as an explicit “example” (ὑπόδειγμα) | Genesis 19 → 2 Peter 2:6 | Type: a specific historical judgment on flagrant wickedness; Antitype: the judgment awaiting “those who would be ungodly” | The text itself names this a typological pattern, not merely an illustration | Render 본보기 in a way that preserves this explicit forward-pointing, pattern-setting function. |
| Balaam as the type of the mercenary false teacher | Numbers 22-24 → 2 Peter 2:15-16 | Type: a genuine prophet corrupted by love of gain; Antitype: the false teachers of Peter’s own day (and, by extension, any era) | Grounds ch. 2’s warning in a concrete, named biblical precedent rather than an abstract category | Retain 발람 as a proper name; teach the type explicitly in doctrine material for False Teachers and Their Judgment. |
| Lot as a type of the righteous preserved through corrupt surroundings | Genesis 19 → 2 Peter 2:7-8 | Type: a believer distressed by, yet ultimately delivered from, a corrupt culture | Comfort/warning paired: God knows how to rescue the godly and to keep the unrighteous under punishment (2:9) | Handle with care not to overstate Lot’s righteousness beyond the apostolic commentary’s own claim; teach as inspired apostolic interpretation of the Genesis account. |
Part 4 — Parallels to Other Curriculum Books (Romans Primary)
Because Romans is this language package’s established authority, every shared quotation, doctrine, or vocabulary item below must reuse the exact Korean rendering already fixed in the baseline translation_memory.json, never a fresh alternative.
| 2 Peter Passage | Romans Parallel | Shared Doctrine/Term | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Peter 1:1 (“a faith of equal standing… in the righteousness of our God and Savior”) | Romans 3:22; Romans 10:12 (“no distinction… the same Lord is Lord of all”) | Universal Scope of the Gospel; Righteousness (의) | Use 의 exactly as in baseline; render “faith of equal standing” (동일하게 보배로운 믿음) so it clearly echoes, not competes with, Romans’ “no distinction” universality language — same underlying doctrine, complementary NT witness. |
| 2 Peter 1:2 (“Grace and peace be multiplied to you”) | Romans 1:7 (“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”) | Epistolary greeting formula | Follow the 평강/화평 distinction already noted in 08_core_glossary.md Section A: use 평강 for this fixed greeting-formula occurrence, matching how Romans 1:7’s greeting is rendered, reserving 화평 for Romans 5:1-style doctrinal statements. |
| 2 Peter 1:3 (“His divine power has granted to us all things pertaining to life and godliness”) | Romans 1:16 (“the power of God for salvation”) | Power of God (능력) | Use 능력 exactly; never 영력. Flag in teaching material that 2 Peter broadens the term’s scope (all of life and godliness) while Romans anchors it narrowly to salvation — same word, same forbidden-substitution rule, expanded doctrinal application. |
| 2 Peter 1:10 (“confirm your calling and election”) | Romans 8:28-30; Romans 9:11-12; Romans 11:29 | Calling and Election (부르심/선택) | Use 부르심 and 택하심/선택 exactly per baseline convention (see 08_core_glossary.md Section A note on the verbal-noun 택하심 vs. doctrine-name 선택). Never 팔자 or 운. |
| 2 Peter 2:1 (“the Master who bought them”) | (thematic, not Romans-specific) 1 Corinthians 6:20; 1 Corinthians 7:23 (“bought with a price”) | Redemption/purchase language | While not a Romans passage, this shares curriculum-wide redemption vocabulary; ensure “bought/purchased” language used across 1–2 Corinthians and 2 Peter renders consistently and is never softened into a repeatable ritual-exchange framing (contrast baseline grace’s 기복신앙 caution). |
| 2 Peter 2:19 (“slaves of corruption… a person is a slave to whatever has mastered him”) | Romans 6:16-22 (slaves of sin vs. slaves of righteousness/obedience) | Slavery to sin vs. freedom in Christ | Ensure “slave” (baseline does not have a fixed TM entry, but Romans 6 uses 종/노예 — recommend 종 for consistency) and 자유 (freedom) render identically across both books; the irony of false “freedom” that is really slavery must land the same way in both curricula. |
| 2 Peter 3:9 (“not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance”) | Romans 2:4 (“God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance”) | Patience of God’s Timing; Repentance (회개) | This is the single clearest Romans/2 Peter doctrinal overlap. Render 회개 identically in both books; ensure the causal logic (God’s patience/kindness → repentance, not judgment-avoidance through ritual) is preserved identically, reinforcing rather than duplicating the baseline providence caution against 팔자/운명 framing. |
| 2 Peter 3:13 (“new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells”) | Romans 8:19-22 (creation’s groaning, awaiting its own liberation) | New Creation; Righteousness (의) | Both books describe creation’s future renewal; use 의 exactly per baseline. Teach these as complementary NT witnesses to a single new-creation hope, not competing images. |
| 2 Peter 3:15-16 (“our beloved brother Paul… in all his letters… the other Scriptures”) | Romans as a whole (one of “Paul’s letters” referenced) | Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture | This is a direct, explicit canonical link: 2 Peter 3:16 places Romans itself inside the category “the other Scriptures” (성경). Teaching material should make this link explicit — the very inspiration doctrine anchored in 2 Peter 1:19-21 is what 2 Peter 3:16 extends to Romans by name-adjacent reference (Paul, its author). Use 성경 exactly as fixed at 2 Peter 1:20. |
| 2 Peter 1:17 (Transfiguration voice) | (cross-curriculum) Matthew 17:5; Mark 9:7; Luke 9:35 | Sonship of Christ | Since Matthew, Mark, and Luke are part of this same language package’s curriculum, the Korean rendering of the Father’s declaration must be verbatim-consistent across all four books’ translations — flag for native speaker review at the point all four documents are finalized. |
| 2 Peter 1:1 (Granville Sharp “our God and Savior Jesus Christ”) | (cross-curriculum, thematically) Romans 9:5 (“Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever”) | Deity of Christ | Both are among the NT’s clearest single-verse affirmations of Christ’s deity; ensure the Korean rendering of 2 Peter 1:1 preserves the single-referent grammatical force with the same rigor already required for Romans 9:5’s rendering under the baseline deity_of_christ doctrine (Critical tier in both). |
Part 5 — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations and Themes
- Psalm 2:7 / Isaiah 42:1 composite (2 Peter 1:17): must render identically to the equivalent declaration in Matthew 17:5, Mark 9:7, and Luke 9:35 wherever this pipeline’s translation work reaches those books. Flag any divergence for theologian review.
- Genesis flood/creation material (2 Peter 2:5; 3:5-6): if this pipeline’s OT translation resources independently render Genesis 6-9, the Korean vocabulary for “flood” (홍수), “ark,” and “the deep” must match exactly between the OT text and 2 Peter’s NT references to it.
- Proverbs 26:11 (2 Peter 2:22): must match any independent rendering of Proverbs 26:11 elsewhere in this language package’s OT materials, word for word where feasible.
- Psalm 90:4 (2 Peter 3:8): must match any independent rendering of Psalm 90:4 elsewhere in this language package’s OT materials.
- Isaiah 65:17/66:22 (2 Peter 3:13): must match any independent rendering of these Isaiah passages, and must also match the Korean rendering used wherever Revelation 21:1 (outside this curriculum but doctrinally identical) might eventually be translated in a future phase, for whole-Bible consistency.
- Romans 2:4 / 2 Peter 3:9 (patience → repentance): 회개 (repentance) and 오래 참으심/인내 (patience/perseverance distinction) must be applied identically in both books; this is the single highest-priority cross-curriculum consistency rule for 2 Peter given the doctrinal weight of Patience of God’s Timing.
- Romans 6:16-22 / 2 Peter 2:19 (slavery to sin vs. freedom): 종 (slave) and 자유 (freedom) vocabulary must render identically.
- Romans 9:5 / 2 Peter 1:1 (Deity of Christ, Granville Sharp constructions): both must preserve single-referent grammatical force using parallel Korean sentence structure; treat as a paired Critical-tier consistency check in Phase 2 Step 17 review.
- Numbers 24:17 (2 Peter 1:19, 샛별): if this pipeline’s OT materials ever render Balaam’s oracle in Numbers, use 샛별 or an equivalent star-image consistent with the messianic reading already established here.
- General rule: whenever a 2 Peter passage and a Romans passage share an English key term already fixed in the baseline
translation_memory.json(의, 은혜, 믿음, 부르심, 선택, 능력, 회개-adjacent salvation vocabulary, 하나님, 예수, 그리스도, 주님, 성령, 영광, 죄), the Korean rendering is non-negotiable and identical in both books. No 2 Peter-specific nuance may override an established baseline term; nuance is conveyed through surrounding exposition and translator notes, never through substituting a different Korean word.
Part 6 — Full-Book Coverage Confirmation
- Chapter 1 (vv. 1-21): reviewed in full — OT quotation/allusion coverage (Psalm 2:7, Isaiah 42:1, Numbers 24:17, Exodus 24/34, Daniel 7), messianic/typological material (Transfiguration, morning star), and Romans-parallel doctrine (righteousness, power of God, calling/election, deity of Christ).
- Chapter 2 (vv. 1-22): reviewed in full — OT allusion coverage (Deuteronomy 13/18, Exodus 15, Genesis 6, Genesis 6-8, Genesis 19, Numbers 22-24) and direct quotation (Proverbs 26:11), typological material (Flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, Balaam, Lot), and Romans-parallel doctrine (redemption/purchase, slavery to sin).
- Chapter 3 (vv. 1-18): reviewed in full — OT allusion coverage (Genesis 1/7, Isaiah 34, Zephaniah 1/3, Malachi 4, Joel 2, Amos 5, Ezekiel 18/33) and direct quotations (Psalm 90:4, Isaiah 65:17/66:22), and the explicit meta-canonical Romans link (2 Peter 3:15-16 naming Paul’s letters as Scripture).
No chapter of 2 Peter was found to contain zero cross-reference material; all three chapters are substantively documented above.
