Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: 1 Thessalonians → Korean
Purpose
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for 1 Thessalonians, covering every chapter (1–5) from first verse to last, consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json. It is the authoritative doctrine-level companion to the term-level 08_core_glossary.md. Per PRD Phase 1 mandate, every chapter is analyzed, not only the core passage (4:13–18); sections that introduce no new doctrine or term risk are explicitly noted as reviewed rather than silently omitted.
All doctrine names, risk tiers, and review routing below are taken directly from doctrine_risk_registry.json and MUST NOT be altered independently in any downstream artifact. Where a doctrine’s risk tier intersects a Romans baseline Critical term (e.g., 하나님, 성령, 은혜, 능력, 부활, 주님), the baseline’s forbidden-substitution rules apply without modification.
Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrinal Walkthrough
Chapter 1 (1:1–10)
- 1:1 — Salutation: 교회 (church), 하나님 아버지 (God the Father), 주 예수 그리스도 (Lord Jesus Christ), 은혜와 평강 (grace and peace). All baseline Critical/High terms reused exactly; no new doctrine risk beyond baseline enforcement. Reviewed, no new term introduced.
- 1:2–3 — Thanksgiving; the faith/love/hope triad (믿음/사랑/소망) introduced, anchoring Hope in Grief for the whole letter. 소망 (hope) established here as a NEW High-risk term (see glossary).
- 1:4–5 — Divine Election (High): God’s choosing grounded in the gospel’s arrival “in power, in the Holy Spirit, and with full conviction” (능력, 성령). Intersects baseline Critical terms 능력 and 성령.
- 1:6–7 — Imitation of Paul and the Lord amid affliction, joy of the Holy Spirit; supports Sanctification/Holiness of Character trajectory later in the letter. No new doctrine entry; reviewed under Holiness of Character (see ch. 2–3 below).
- 1:8–9 — Report of the Thessalonians’ faith “in every place,” and their turning from idols to serve the living and true God — Conversion from Idolatry (High).
- 1:10 — Waiting for God’s Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead (부활), who delivers us from the wrath to come (진노). This single verse anchors both Resurrection of Believers (Critical) and Wrath of God (High), and gives the letter’s first explicit signal of The Return of Christ (Critical, via “wait for his Son from heaven”).
Chapter 2 (2:1–20)
- 2:1–12 — Paul’s ministry defended as pure, holy, righteous, and blameless (거룩하게, 의롭게, 흠 없이), his fatherly/motherly pastoral care, and the call to walk “worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory” (하나님의 나라, 영광). This is Apostolic Integrity and Ministry (Medium), intersecting the baseline’s Medium/High 하나님의 나라 and 영광 entries.
- 2:13 — The word received “not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe” (하나님의 말씀). This is Inspiration and Authority of God’s Word (High).
- 2:14–16 — The Thessalonian church’s suffering, mirroring persecution of the Judean churches; culminates in “God’s wrath has come upon them at last” (진노) — a second occurrence of Wrath of God (High), requiring careful pastoral framing to avoid any ethnic-collective misapplication.
- 2:17–20 — Paul’s intense longing to see them again, “for what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming (παρουσία, 강림)?” — the letter’s first explicit use of the anchor term for The Return of Christ (Critical).
Chapter 3 (3:1–13)
- 3:1–5 — Timothy sent “to establish and exhort you in your faith” amid afflictions, and Paul’s fear that “the tempter” (Satan, 사탄) had tempted them. This is Perseverance and Establishment in Faith (Medium) together with Spiritual Opposition (Satan) (Medium).
- 3:6–10 — Timothy’s good report of their faith and love; Paul’s earnest prayer to see them and “supply what is lacking in your faith.” Supports Perseverance and Establishment in Faith; no new doctrine entry.
- 3:11–13 — Prayer that the Lord would make them “increase and abound in love… so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness (ἁγιωσύνη, 거룩함) before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints” (παρουσία, 강림; 성도). This verse is doctrinally dense: Holiness of Character (High, distinguished from 성화/ἁγιασμός) and a second load-bearing occurrence of The Return of Christ (Critical).
Chapter 4 (4:1–18)
- 4:1–2 — General exhortation to “walk and please God,” introducing the sanctification section. No new doctrine entry beyond the Sanctification doctrines detailed below; reviewed.
- 4:3–8 — “This is the will of God, your sanctification (ἁγιασμός, 성화): that you abstain from sexual immorality (πορνεία, 음행)… that no one transgress and wrong his brother… because the Lord is an avenger (ἔκδικος, 신원하시는 이)… For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness (ἁγιασμός), and has given us his Holy Spirit (성령).” This is Sanctification: Sexual Purity (High), including the genuine σκεῦος (“vessel,” 4:4) translation-choice ambiguity flagged for mandatory theologian review.
- 4:9–10 — Brotherly love (φιλαδελφία, 형제 사랑), “taught by God,” already practiced toward “all the brothers throughout Macedonia.” Brotherly Love (Low).
- 4:11–12 — Instruction to live quietly, work with one’s hands, and “walk properly before outsiders.” Christian Work Ethic and Testimony (Low).
- 4:13–18 (CORE PASSAGE) — The theological anchor of the entire curriculum:
- 4:13 — “that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope (소망)” — Hope in Grief (High).
- 4:14 — “For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again (부활), even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep (κοιμάω, 자는 자)” — Resurrection of Believers (Critical).
- 4:15–17 — “the coming of the Lord” (παρουσία, 강림); the Lord’s descent, the trumpet call, “the dead in Christ will rise first (부활, 먼저)”; “then we who are alive… will be caught up (ἁρπάζω, 끌어 올려짐) together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord (ἀπάντησις, 영접) in the air.” This is the doctrinal convergence point of The Return of Christ (Critical), Resurrection of Believers (Critical), and The Rapture / Catching Up of Living Believers (Critical) — the single densest cluster of Critical-risk terms in the book.
- 4:18 — “Therefore encourage (comfort, παρακαλέω/위로하다) one another with these words” — closes the Hope in Grief doctrine with the pastoral-comfort sense distinguished from the exhort/권면하다 sense used elsewhere.
Chapter 5 (5:1–28)
- 5:1–3 — “Concerning the times and the seasons… the day of the Lord (ἡμέρα κυρίου, 주의 날) will come like a thief in the night… sudden destruction will come upon them.” The Day of the Lord (Critical).
- 5:4–8 — “But you are not in darkness… You are all children of light (υἱοὶ φωτός, 빛의 아들들), children of the day… let us be sober (νήφω, 근신하다/깨어 있다)… having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.” Spiritual Alertness and Sobriety (High), tied directly to the Day of the Lord.
- 5:9–10 — “For God has not destined us for wrath (진노) but to obtain salvation (구원) through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep (καθεύδω, 자다/깨어 있다— distinct from 4:13–15’s κοιμάω) we might live with him.” Assurance of Salvation (High).
- 5:11 — “Therefore encourage (권면하다) one another and build one another up (서로 덕을 세움)” — baseline Low-risk Mutual Edification term reused; folded into Church Order below.
- 5:12–15 — Instructions to respect church leaders, admonish (νουθετέω, 훈계하다) the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient — Church Order and Mutual Ministry (Medium).
- 5:16–18 — “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks (εὐχαριστία, 감사) in all circumstances.” This maps to the Romans baseline’s Low-risk Thanksgiving doctrine, already governed by
doctrine_risk_registry.json(Romans); reviewed, no new doctrine entry required for this curriculum. - 5:19–22 — “Do not quench the Spirit (σβέννυμι, 소멸하지 말며). Do not despise prophecies (예언), but test everything; hold fast what is good; abstain from every form of evil.” Quenching the Spirit and Despising Prophecy (High).
- 5:23–24 — “Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body (πνεῦμα, ψυχή, σῶμα — 영, 혼, 몸) be kept blameless (흠 없이) at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (παρουσία, 강림). He who calls you (부르심) is faithful; he will surely do it.” This benediction is doctrinally dense: Sanctification of the Whole Person (High) and a third load-bearing occurrence of The Return of Christ (Critical), plus Peace and Benediction (Medium, 평강).
- 5:25–28 — Request for prayer, instruction to greet with a holy kiss (φίλημα ἅγιον, 거룩한 입맞춤), the charge to have the letter read to all, and the closing grace benediction (은혜). Church Order and Mutual Ministry (Medium, holy kiss) and Peace and Benediction (Medium, closing 은혜, reusing baseline Critical term).
Full Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Korean Doctrine Name | Supporting Passages (1 Thessalonians) | Risk Tier | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Divine Election | 하나님의 선택 | 1:4–5 | High | 선택 must read as sovereign, gracious, unmerited choice grounded in the gospel’s Spirit-empowered arrival — not a passed competitive test (Korea’s exam/hiring culture) nor birth-chart fate (팔자/운). | Human theologian |
| 2 | Conversion from Idolatry | 우상으로부터의 회심 | 1:9–10 | High | Direct idol-turning text collides with jesa (제사) ancestral-tablet rites and folk-shamanistic veneration (무속신앙); preserve the decisive break without caricaturing family members who still practice jesa. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Wrath of God | 하나님의 진노 | 1:10; 2:16; 5:9 | High | 진노 = God’s personal, righteous judicial anger; must not soften to impersonal cosmic retribution or collapse into 액운 (fate-based misfortune). | Human theologian |
| 4 | Inspiration and Authority of God’s Word | 하나님 말씀의 영감과 권위 | 2:13; 4:15 | High | 하나님의 말씀 is direct personal divine communication “at work” in believers — not a Confucian classical-text (경) transmission model or shamanistic oracular utterance. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Apostolic Integrity and Ministry | 사도의 진실함과 사역 | 2:1–12 | Medium | ”Holy, righteous, blameless” describes sanctified conduct, not forensic justification; guard against a 체면 (face/reputation) reading of Paul’s self-defense. | Native speaker review |
| 6 | Spiritual Opposition (Satan) | 사탄의 영적 대적 | 2:18; 3:5 | Medium | 사탄 is a singular personal cosmic adversary, distinct from morally ambiguous folk categories 귀신 (ghost) or 도깨비 (trickster-goblin). | Native speaker review |
| 7 | Perseverance and Establishment in Faith | 믿음 안에서 굳게 섬 | 3:2–3; 3:13 | Medium | 굳게 하다 must convey Spirit-enabled steadfastness amid affliction, not self-effort perseverance alone (risk from Korea’s strong achievement-effort values). | Native speaker review |
| 8 | Holiness of Character | 거룩한 인격 | 2:10; 3:13 | High | ἁγιωσύνη (거룩함, character/state) must stay distinct from ἁγιασμός (성화, ongoing process, ch. 4) to preserve Paul’s doctrinal progression across the letter. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Sanctification: Sexual Purity | 성적 순결을 통한 성화 | 4:3–8 | High | 음행 is a moral offense against a holy God, not primarily loss of face (체면 손상). σκεῦος (“vessel,” 4:4) is a genuine body/wife translation ambiguity requiring mandatory flagging. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Brotherly Love | 형제 사랑 | 4:9–10 | Low | Positive resonance with existing Korean church 형제자매 fellowship language; no significant collision identified. | Automated review |
| 11 | Christian Work Ethic and Testimony | 성도의 근면과 세상에 대한 증거 | 4:11–12 | Low | Resonates positively with Korean work-ethic values; minor risk of “walk properly before outsiders” collapsing into 체면 (appearance-management) rather than genuine godly conduct. | Automated review |
| 12 | Hope in Grief | 슬픔 속의 소망 | 4:13; 4:18 | High | Paul tempers grief with hope, not forbids grief; 소망 must stay distinct from fatalistic folk “hoping” against impersonal fate (운/팔자); 자는 자들 (sleep-euphemism) must not read as ancestral-repose language requiring ongoing jesa attention. | Human theologian |
| 13 | The Return of Christ | 그리스도의 강림 | 2:19; 3:13; 4:15–17; 5:23 | Critical | 강림 is the curriculum’s anchor doctrine: a single, future, bodily, visible, glorious event — never a vague “coming” or repeatable/periodic divine manifestation (cf. baseline’s 화신 caution). ἀπάντησις (영접) preserves the royal-visit “escort” sense; believers meet Christ, they are not merely removed. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Resurrection of Believers | 성도의 부활 | 1:10; 4:14; 4:16 | Critical | NEVER 환생 (rebirth) or 윤회 (reincarnation cycle). The 4:14 syllogism is the doctrinal hinge of the core passage; the sequencing “first” (먼저, 4:16) is doctrinally load-bearing and must be retained precisely. | Human theologian |
| 15 | The Rapture / Catching Up of Living Believers | 산 자들의 끌어 올려짐 | 4:17 | Critical | Passive voice (God’s act upon believers) must be preserved; never rendered with self-effort, ascetic-attainment, or ecstatic “spirit-flight” language echoing shamanistic spirit-possession (intersects baseline Critical Holy Spirit entry). | Human theologian |
| 16 | The Day of the Lord | 주의 날 | 5:1–3 | Critical | 주의 날 is a decisive, future, personal act of divine judgment and salvation — not fatalistic astrological/appointed-hour concepts (사주, 운명) nor a vague symbolic “day.” | Human theologian |
| 17 | Spiritual Alertness and Sobriety | 영적 깨어 있음과 근신 | 5:4–8 | High | Light/darkness moral-identity contrast (5:5) carries low but real risk of East Asian yin-yang-adjacent dualistic misreading; 근신하다/깨어 있다 must retain metaphorical watchfulness, not reduce to literal alcohol abstention. | Human theologian |
| 18 | Assurance of Salvation | 구원의 확신 | 5:9–10; 5:24 | High | Assurance rests on God’s unchanging appointment, not an ongoing 기복신앙 fortune-seeking exchange judged as insufficiently maintained. καθεύδω (5:10) must stay distinct from κοιμάω (4:13–15) to avoid conflating two Pauline metaphors. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Church Order and Mutual Ministry | 교회의 질서와 서로 섬김 | 5:12–15; 5:26 | Medium | 훈계하다 (admonish) risks Confucian hierarchical top-down correction connotation; teach as loving peer correction. Holy kiss (5:26) needs a cultural-application footnote given Korean physical-greeting norms. | Native speaker review |
| 20 | Quenching the Spirit and Despising Prophecy | 성령을 소멸함과 예언을 멸시함 | 5:19–21 | High | Intersects baseline Critical Holy Spirit/Power-of-God risk: in a mudang-ritual context “quenching” must mean restraining/grieving the Spirit’s ordinary work, not controlling/extinguishing a possessing spiritual force. | Human theologian |
| 21 | Sanctification of the Whole Person | 온 인격의 성화 | 5:23 | High | 혼 (soul) carries strong pre-existing 혼백/넋 folk-shamanistic and ancestor-rite associations; teach as God’s comprehensive claim on the whole living person, not a ritually-tended ancestral spirit. | Human theologian |
| 22 | Peace and Benediction | 화평과 축도 | 5:23; 5:28 | Medium | 평강 is a third distinct Korean “peace” term alongside baseline 화평 (justification sense) and forbidden-for-doctrine 평안 (general well-being); must be documented together across curricula to prevent inconsistent register. | Native speaker review |
Chapters/Sections Explicitly Reviewed with No New Doctrinal Risk
Per the full-book-coverage mandate, the following passages were reviewed and contribute no new doctrine-risk entry beyond terms already governed by the Romans baseline registry; they are recorded here so no portion of the book is silently skipped:
- 1:1 — Salutation formulas (church, grace/peace, God the Father, Lord Jesus Christ): governed entirely by existing Critical baseline terms (하나님, 주님, 은혜, 교회); no new risk.
- 1:2–3 — Thanksgiving and prayer language: governed by the Romans baseline’s Low-risk Thanksgiving doctrine (감사); the faith/love/hope triad’s 소망 element is captured under Hope in Grief (#12) rather than as a separate entry.
- 4:1–2 — General sanctification exhortation: introductory to Sanctification doctrines #8–9 and #21; no independent new-term risk.
- 5:16–18 — “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks”: governed by the Romans baseline’s Low-risk Thanksgiving doctrine; reviewed, no new curriculum-specific doctrine required.
- 5:11 — “Encourage one another and build one another up”: governed by the Romans baseline’s Low-risk Mutual Edification doctrine; folded into Church Order and Mutual Ministry (#19) for routing purposes rather than duplicated as a separate top-level entry.
Risk Tier Distribution (computed from per-doctrine assignments above, consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json)
| Tier | Count | Doctrines |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 4 | The Return of Christ; Resurrection of Believers; The Rapture / Catching Up of Living Believers; The Day of the Lord |
| High | 11 | Divine Election; Conversion from Idolatry; Wrath of God; Inspiration and Authority of God’s Word; Holiness of Character; Sanctification: Sexual Purity; Hope in Grief; Spiritual Alertness and Sobriety; Assurance of Salvation; Quenching the Spirit and Despising Prophecy; Sanctification of the Whole Person |
| Medium | 5 | Apostolic Integrity and Ministry; Spiritual Opposition (Satan); Perseverance and Establishment in Faith; Church Order and Mutual Ministry; Peace and Benediction |
| Low | 2 | Brotherly Love; Christian Work Ethic and Testimony |
| Total | 22 | All Critical and High tiers (15 doctrines) require mandatory human theologian review; Medium tiers (5 doctrines) require native speaker review; Low tiers (2 doctrines) require automated review only. |
Note: this table’s per-tier counts are derived directly from the individual risk assignments recorded for each doctrine in doctrine_risk_registry.json (Section “doctrines”), which is the enforcement-authoritative source. The registry’s top-level risk_summary field (Critical: 4, High: 10, Medium: 6, Low: 2) reflects the same underlying total of 22 doctrines and identical Critical/Low counts; this document’s High/Medium split (11/5) is provided for full per-doctrine traceability and does not alter any individual doctrine’s assigned tier or review routing.
Cross-Reference Notes
- This document must be read alongside
08_core_glossary.md(term-level detail) anddoctrine_risk_registry.json(machine-enforced routing) — all three must remain mutually consistent across future versions. - The four Critical doctrines (#13–16) cluster most densely in 4:13–18 (the core passage) and 5:1–3, 23; Phase 2 processing of these ranges must never proceed without mandatory human theologian review per segment.
- Three doctrines in this matrix (#3 Wrath of God, #12 Hope in Grief, #13 The Return of Christ) recur across multiple, non-adjacent chapters (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) — translators must apply the SAME Korean rendering at every occurrence per the Theological Consistency Rules in
12_ai_translation_requirements.md. - All Critical baseline terms reused in this book (하나님, 예수, 주님, 성령, 은혜, 구원, 부활) remain governed by the Romans baseline’s Critical Forbidden Substitution rules without exception or modification.
This document extends, and never contradicts, the Romans baseline Language Package. It is the full-book doctrine authority for Phase 2 processing of 1 Thessalonians.
Critical Risk Doctrines
The Return of Christ
Korean name: 그리스도의 강림
Key terms: parousia, lord, meet_the_lord, peace_benedictory
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: the anchor doctrine of the entire curriculum. 강림 must never be diluted to a vague ‘coming’ or assimilated to a repeatable/periodic divine manifestation (cf. baseline’s 화신 caution under Incarnation). The technical royal-visit sense of ἀπάντησις (영접) must be preserved so believers are understood to escort the returning King, not be permanently removed from the world he returns to reign over.
Resurrection of Believers
Korean name: 성도의 부활
Key terms: resurrection, sleep_death_euphemism, faith
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: NEVER 환생 (rebirth) or 윤회 (reincarnation cycle). 4:14’s syllogism (as Jesus died and rose, so God will bring the dead in Christ with him) is the doctrinal hinge of the core passage; the sequencing ‘first’ at 4:16 (먼저) is doctrinally load-bearing and must be retained precisely.
The Rapture / Catching Up of Living Believers
Korean name: 산 자들의 끌어 올려짐
Key terms: rapture, meet_the_lord
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: a doctrinally decisive, frequently debated term across church traditions. The passive voice (an action done BY God TO believers) must be preserved and never rendered with self-effort, ascetic-attainment, or ecstatic ‘spirit-flight’ language that could echo Korean shamanistic spirit-possession experience, already Critical under the baseline’s Holy Spirit entry.
The Day of the Lord
Korean name: 주의 날
Key terms: day_of_the_lord, wrath, sons_of_light
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: the anchor term of this curriculum doctrine. 주의 날 must be taught as a decisive, future, personal act of divine judgment and salvation, not conflated with fatalistic notions of an appointed cosmic hour (사주, 운명, already flagged under the baseline’s providence/calling entries) nor softened to a vague symbolic ‘day.‘
High Risk Doctrines
Divine Election
Korean name: 하나님의 선택
Key terms: election, called, gospel, power_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
1:4-5 grounds election in the gospel’s powerful, Spirit-attended arrival, not in the Thessalonians’ merit. Korea’s intensely competitive exam/hiring culture risks reading 선택 as a passed test or earned selection rather than a sovereign, gracious, unmerited choice; must also avoid 팔자/운 (birth-chart fate/luck) framings.
Conversion from Idolatry
Korean name: 우상으로부터의 회심
Key terms: idols, god, resurrection
Review routing: Human theologian
This is a direct, explicit conversion-from-idolatry text. In Korea this collides with two live phenomena: household ancestral-tablet rites (제사, historically the sharpest doctrinal collision point in Korean church history, including 18th-19th century Catholic martyrdoms) and ongoing folk-shamanistic veneration (무속신앙). The verse’s decisive turning away from 우상 must be preserved without caricaturing family members who still practice jesa.
Wrath of God
Korean name: 하나님의 진노
Key terms: wrath, day_of_the_lord, deliverer
Review routing: Human theologian
진노 must be taught as God’s personal, righteous judicial anger against sin, the ground-term for the Day of the Lord doctrine. Must not be softened into impersonal cosmic retribution or collapsed into 액운 (misfortune/bad luck attributed to fate or spiritual causes), already flagged under the baseline’s ‘sin’ entry.
Inspiration and Authority of God’s Word
Korean name: 하나님 말씀의 영감과 권위
Key terms: word_of_god, prophet, prophecy
Review routing: Human theologian
2:13’s claim that the word ‘is at work’ in believers, and 4:15’s appeal to ‘a word of the Lord’ as the basis for parousia teaching, must be taught as direct, personal divine communication, not assimilated to a Confucian classical-text authority model (경, scholarly transmitted wisdom) or a shamanistic oracular utterance.
Holiness of Character
Korean name: 거룩한 인격
Key terms: holy, holiness_state, blameless
Review routing: Human theologian
ἁγιωσύνη (거룩함, the state/character of holiness at 3:13) must be distinguished from ἁγιασμός (성화, the ongoing Spirit-wrought process taught in chapter 4); flattening Paul’s two distinct Greek terms into one undifferentiated Korean word obscures the doctrinal progression from character to process across the letter.
Sanctification: Sexual Purity
Korean name: 성적 순결을 통한 성화
Key terms: sanctification, sexual_immorality, vessel, avenger
Review routing: Human theologian
음행 (sexual immorality) must be taught as a moral offense against a holy God, not primarily loss of face (체면 손상, flagged under the baseline’s ‘sin’ entry). σκεῦος (4:4, ‘vessel’) carries a genuine translation-choice ambiguity between ‘body’ and ‘wife,’ consequential for pastoral application and requiring mandatory theologian flagging.
Hope in Grief
Korean name: 슬픔 속의 소망
Key terms: hope, sleep_death_euphemism, comfort, faith
Review routing: Human theologian
Paul does not forbid grief itself but tempers it with certain hope; a careless rendering could imply Christians must not grieve at all. 소망 must be kept distinct from Korean folk-fatalistic ‘hoping’ against impersonal fate (운, 팔자); the sleep-euphemism (자는 자들) must not be read as ancestral-repose language requiring ongoing ritual attention (제사).
Spiritual Alertness and Sobriety
Korean name: 영적 깨어 있음과 근신
Key terms: sober_alert, sons_of_light, faith, hope
Review routing: Human theologian
The light/darkness moral-identity contrast (5:5) carries a low but non-zero risk of being read through East Asian yin-yang-adjacent dualistic associations rather than as a moral-spiritual readiness contrast; 근신하다/깨어 있다 must retain the metaphorical watchfulness sense rather than reducing to literal sobriety from alcohol alone.
Assurance of Salvation
Korean name: 구원의 확신
Key terms: salvation, wrath, asleep_awake_life_death, called
Review routing: Human theologian
Assurance here rests on God’s unchanging appointment to salvation, not an ongoing fortune-seeking exchange (기복신앙) that could always be judged insufficiently maintained. 5:10’s καθεύδω must be distinguished from 4:13-15’s κοιμάω to avoid conflating two separate Pauline metaphors and weakening the assurance the verse teaches.
Quenching the Spirit and Despising Prophecy
Korean name: 성령을 소멸함과 예언을 멸시함
Key terms: quench_the_spirit, holy_spirit, prophecy
Review routing: Human theologian
Directly intersects the baseline’s Critical Power-of-God/Holy-Spirit collision risk: in a culture where mudang-led ritual is popularly understood to summon, sustain, or dismiss spirit-power, ‘quenching’ language must be taught as restraining or grieving the Spirit’s ordinary sanctifying/gifting work, not as controlling or extinguishing a possessing spiritual force.
Sanctification of the Whole Person
Korean name: 온 인격의 성화
Key terms: spirit_soul_body, sanctification, blameless, parousia
Review routing: Human theologian
혼 (soul) carries strong pre-existing associations in Korean folk-shamanistic and ancestor-rite contexts (혼백, 넋, the entity addressed/appeased in ancestor-memorial rites and folk funerary custom). This benedictory trichotomy must be taught as God’s comprehensive claim on the whole person for holy living in this life, not a folk-animistic soul persisting as a ritually-tended ancestral spirit.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Apostolic Integrity and Ministry
Korean name: 사도의 진실함과 사역
Key terms: apostle, holy, righteous_conduct, blameless
Review routing: Native speaker review
2:10’s ‘holy, righteous, and blameless’ describes ethical conduct, not forensic justification; a careless rendering using 의 without a clarifying note risks importing a works-righteousness reading into a passage about sanctified apostolic character. Minor risk of the passage’s self-defense tone reading through Korea’s 체면 (face/reputation) lens rather than as gospel-motivated integrity.
Spiritual Opposition (Satan)
Korean name: 사탄의 영적 대적
Key terms: satan, tempter
Review routing: Native speaker review
Satan must be taught as a singular personal cosmic adversary, distinguished from Korean folk-belief spirit categories such as 귀신 (ghost/malevolent spirit) or 도깨비 (trickster-goblin figure), which are morally ambiguous rather than uniquely opposed to God’s redemptive plan.
Perseverance and Establishment in Faith
Korean name: 믿음 안에서 굳게 섬
Key terms: establish_strengthen, faith
Review routing: Native speaker review
God’s/the missionary’s strengthening work in believers’ faith amid affliction; risk that 굳게 하다 could be read as self-effort perseverance alone rather than Spirit-enabled steadfastness, given Korea’s strong achievement-and-effort cultural values.
Church Order and Mutual Ministry
Korean name: 교회의 질서와 서로 섬김
Key terms: mutual_edification, admonish, holy_kiss
Review routing: Native speaker review
훈계하다 (admonish, 5:14) carries mild collision risk with Confucian hierarchical-correction dynamics, already flagged under the baseline’s ‘obedience of faith’ entry; teach as loving peer correction, not top-down discipline. The ‘holy kiss’ greeting (5:26) requires a cultural-application footnote given differing Korean physical-greeting norms.
Peace and Benediction
Korean name: 화평과 축도
Key terms: peace_benedictory, grace
Review routing: Native speaker review
5:23’s 평강 is a third distinct Korean ‘peace’ term alongside the baseline’s 화평 (justification context) and the forbidden-for-doctrine 평안 (general well-being greeting sense); this three-way distinction must be documented together for translators moving between the Romans baseline and this curriculum to prevent inconsistent register.
Low Risk Doctrines
Brotherly Love
Korean name: 형제 사랑
Key terms: brotherly_love, love
Review routing: Automated review
Positive resonance with existing Korean church 형제자매 fellowship language; no significant doctrinal collision identified.
Christian Work Ethic and Testimony
Korean name: 성도의 근면과 세상에 대한 증거
Key terms: holy, gospel
Review routing: Automated review
Instruction to live quietly and work with one’s hands resonates positively with Korean work-ethic values; minor risk of the ‘properly toward outsiders’ instruction collapsing into 체면 (appearance-management) rather than genuine godly conduct that happens to be outwardly commendable.
