What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis: Colossians (Full Book, Chapters 1-4)

Methodology

Each chapter of Colossians was reviewed verse-by-verse against the eight curriculum doctrines (Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation, Christ as Head of the Church, Reconciliation through the Cross, Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism, Union with Christ, Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New, Household Codes, Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily) plus all doctrines that surface as load-bearing sub-themes in the letter’s argument (mystery, cosmic powers, wisdom/knowledge, inheritance/adoption, status distinctions, church-as-body, hope of glory, peace of Christ, baptism/circumcision, apostolic ministry, thanksgiving). Every doctrine below carries the identical name, risk tier, and review routing recorded in doctrine_risk_registry.json. Passages cited are drawn exclusively from Colossians; cross-book doctrinal continuity with the Romans baseline is noted where directly relevant (e.g., adoption, grace/기복신앙, resurrection forbidden-substitutions) but Romans doctrine names are not re-litigated here.

Chapter 1 (1:1-29)

1:1-2 — Greeting

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
(Apostleship — TM reuse, no new risk)1:1Low사도 reused exactly from Romans baseline; no new collision.Automated review
Peace of Christ Governing Community Life (epistolary sense)1:2Medium평강 (epistolary greeting pair “grace and peace”) must be kept distinct from 화평 (justification-peace, 1:20) per KRV convention; conflating the two flattens two distinct registers into one.Native speaker review

1:3-8 — Thanksgiving, Faith, Love, Hope of the Gospel

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Thanksgiving1:3Low감사 reused exactly; minor risk of generic secular gratitude without explicit reference to God.Automated review
Hope of Glory in Christ1:5Medium소망 must be distinguished from vague wishful optimism or a 기복신앙-adjacent hope for material blessing/fortune; hope here is a certainty grounded in the gospel already heard.Native speaker review
Faith and Doctrinal Stability against False Teaching1:4High믿음 here begins the letter’s extended stability theme (continued 1:23, 2:5-7); must not be read as mere sincerity of belief but trust that will later be tested against “philosophy” (2:8).Human theologian

1:9-14 — Prayer for Knowledge, Wisdom, Kingdom, Redemption

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ1:9High지혜 must be qualified “신령한” (Spirit-given); unqualified 지혜 risks conflation with Buddhist prajñā (반야지혜) wisdom leading to enlightenment.Human theologian
Inheritance and Adoption into God’s Family1:12, 1:13High유업 must be taught as a relational, gracious gift, not an instrumental Confucian heir-inheritance tied to continuing ancestor-memorial rites (제사); “kingdom of his beloved Son” (하나님의 나라, 사랑하는 아들의 나라) reuses the Romans baseline’s Low-risk kingdom term but here is combined with High-risk inheritance/adoption theology.Human theologian
Reconciliation through the Cross (redemption/forgiveness anticipation)1:14High”Redemption” (속량/구속) and “forgiveness of sins” here anticipate 1:20’s fuller reconciliation statement; must not be reduced to a shamanistic ritual debt-release (해원굿) or ancestral-grudge resolution.Human theologian

1:15-20 — The Christ-Hymn (Core Passage: Supremacy, Fullness, Reconciliation)

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
The Supremacy of Christ over Creation1:15, 1:16, 1:17Critical형상 (image) must never suggest an object of veneration itself (collision with 신상/영정 shrine-image and ancestor-portrait veneration). 먼저 나신 이 (firstborn) must foreclose the Jehovah’s Witness reading (Christ as first-created being) — this is a live, contemporary pastoral risk in Korea given active JW presence. 만물 (all things) must be rendered identically across all 5 occurrences in 1:16-20 to preserve the hymn’s rhetorical repetition. 보좌/주관/통치자/권세 (thrones/dominions/rulers/authorities) must not be equated with Korean shamanistic spirit-hierarchy without the subordination clause. 함께 서다 (hold together) must convey Christ’s ongoing personal governance, not an impersonal cosmic-order principle (도/이).Human theologian
Christ as Head of the Church1:18High머리 must combine authority-source AND organic life-source senses; risks collapsing into mere Confucian patriarchal household-head (가장) authority alone if the body-growth sense is lost.Human theologian
Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily1:19Critical충만 must be taught as complete, undivided fullness dwelling in Christ alone — the Colossian error apparently distributed divine fullness among intermediary powers; any rendering implying partial or shared fullness is doctrinally destructive.Human theologian
Reconciliation through the Cross1:20High화목하게 하다 must always be anchored to “through the blood of his cross” (십자가의 피); standing alone, 화목 risks flattening into the everyday secular/Confucian ideal of family/social harmony (화목한 가정).Human theologian

1:21-23 — Reconciliation Applied, Faith Stability

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Reconciliation through the Cross1:21, 1:22High”Enemies/alienated” (원수, 소원해지다) describes genuine hostility toward a personal God, not mere social alienation or loss of face (체면 손상); must not be minimized.Human theologian
Faith and Doctrinal Stability against False Teaching1:23High”If indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast” introduces the stability motif fully realized in 2:6-7; 믿음 here denotes settled doctrinal firmness, not vague general confidence.Human theologian

1:24-29 — Apostolic Suffering, Sufficiency of the Atonement, Mystery Revealed

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Sufficiency of Christ’s Atonement (vs. Apostolic Suffering)1:24Critical”Filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions” must never be rendered or taught in a way implying Christ’s atoning death was insufficient; Korean phrasing must clearly distinguish Paul’s own missionary/pastoral suffering from Christ’s unique, complete, once-for-all atoning suffering, which lacks nothing for salvation.Human theologian
The Mystery of Christ Now Openly Revealed1:26, 1:27Critical비밀 must always retain its resolution clause — NOW OPENLY REVEALED to all who believe, not a secret reserved for an inner circle. This is a live, high-priority safeguard given Korea’s ongoing new-religious-movement phenomenon of groups (some claiming Christian identity) that teach exclusive possession of hidden scriptural knowledge.Human theologian
Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ1:28High”Teaching everyone in all wisdom” — 지혜 again requires the “신령한/Christ-grounded” qualifier to avoid conflation with Buddhist enlightenment-wisdom.Human theologian
Apostolic Ministry and Gospel Proclamation1:24-29MediumPaul’s “toil, struggling with all his energy” must be presented as Spirit-empowered gospel service, not achievement-oriented ministry success measured by growth metrics (continuous with the Romans baseline’s caution on Korea’s success-and-growth-oriented missions culture).Native speaker review

Chapter 1 summary: Every section carries load-bearing doctrinal content; no section reviewed as doctrinally inert.

Chapter 2 (2:1-23)

2:1-7 — Struggle for the Church, Mystery, Wisdom, Doctrinal Stability

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
The Mystery of Christ Now Openly Revealed2:2Critical”The mystery of God, namely, Christ” — same 비밀 resolution-clause requirement as 1:26-27; reinforced here with “all the riches of full assurance of understanding.”Human theologian
Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ2:2, 2:3High”Treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (지혜와 지식의 보화) hidden IN CHRIST — must not be read as an esoteric treasure accessible only to initiates; available to all in Christ.Human theologian
Faith and Doctrinal Stability against False Teaching2:5, 2:6, 2:7High”Firmness of your faith,” “rooted and built up and established” — 믿음’s stability sense must not be flattened into vague general confidence nor conflated with Korea’s intense status/achievement-conscious drive for certainty in secular contexts.Human theologian

2:8-10 — Warning against Philosophy, Elemental Spirits; Fullness of Deity Bodily

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism2:8Critical철학과 헛된 속임수 must name the specific, human-tradition-based, Christ-displacing system Paul opposes — not a blanket condemnation of rational thought. Teaching must use concrete contemporary Korean categories (syncretistic shamanistic blending, 사주팔자, 풍수, new-religious doctrine).Human theologian
Cosmic Spiritual Powers Created, Subordinate, and Defeated2:8, 2:10Critical세상의 초등학문 (elemental spirits/principles of the world) must never be equated with Korea’s 오행 (Five-Phases) cosmology or 사주팔자/풍수 systems without the explicit defeat/subordination clause — any such system is Christ’s creature and already defeated.Human theologian
Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily2:9, 2:10Critical신성 (deity/Godhead, θεότης) is the full essence of deity itself, distinct from the weaker θειότης (“divine quality,” Romans 1:20) — must not be softened. 육체로 (bodily) must affirm real, permanent physical embodiment, never the Buddhist 화신 (avatar/provisional-manifestation) concept already forbidden under “incarnation” in the Romans baseline, nor shamanistic spirit-possession/indwelling framing.Human theologian

2:11-15 — Circumcision, Baptism, Union with Christ, Certificate of Debt, Disarming of Powers

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Baptism and Circumcision Fulfilled in Christ2:11, 2:12, 2:13Medium세례 must not be confused with shamanistic ritual washing to remove impurity/misfortune (부정을 씻음); 할례 requires OT covenantal background explanation given the absence of a native Korean cultural equivalent rite.Native speaker review
Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)2:12, 2:13High”Buried with him… raised with him” — forbidden-substitution rule for resurrection (never 환생, never 윤회) applies with full force; this is a definitive, already-accomplished spiritual union appropriated by faith, not a repeatable ritual or gradual self-attained transformation.Human theologian
Reconciliation through the Cross (debt cancellation)2:14Critical증서 (채무증서, certificate of debt) describes a once-for-all, complete legal cancellation of sin’s debt at the cross — must never be rendered or taught as analogous to a shamanistic 해원굿 (ritual debt/grudge resolution) requiring ongoing appeasement of ancestral spirits.Human theologian
Cosmic Spiritual Powers Created, Subordinate, and Defeated2:15Critical”Disarmed the rulers and authorities… triumphing over them” — the decisive, public, total defeat of every hostile spiritual power must be preserved; believers owe such powers no fear, appeasement, or ritual deference.Human theologian

2:16-23 — Regulations, Shadow/Substance, Worship of Angels, Self-Made Religion

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism2:16, 2:20-23Critical”Regulations” (규례) and “self-made religion” (자의적 숭배, ἐθελοθρησκία) describe rejected human religious rule-imposition; 자의적 숭배 is directly relevant to certain Korean extreme-ascetic prayer-retreat (기도원) practices and requires unpacking rather than a single-word gloss.Human theologian
Cosmic Spiritual Powers Created, Subordinate, and Defeated (worship of angels)2:18Critical/High천사 숭배 (worship of angels) directly connects to Korean spirit-veneration practice (조상신, 산신) and the Father/제사 collision already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline; creaturely veneration must never displace worship owed to Christ alone.Human theologian
(Shadow/substance typology — supporting Supremacy doctrine)2:17High그림자/몸(실체) must convey typological fulfillment (shadow anticipates, substance fulfills), not a Buddhist illusion-vs-reality (색즉시공-style) dichotomy.Human theologian
Union with Christ (ascetic-practice contrast)2:20-23High”Regulations… according to human precepts” imposed after having “died with Christ” — self-devised asceticism has “an appearance of wisdom” but no value against the flesh; must not be taught as a path to sanctification parallel to ascetic self-cultivation.Human theologian

Chapter 2 summary: Every section carries load-bearing doctrinal content; no section reviewed as doctrinally inert. This chapter carries the highest concentration of Critical-risk terminology in the letter.

Chapter 3 (3:1-25)

3:1-4 — Union with Christ, Seeking Things Above, Hope of Glory

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)3:1, 3:3High”If then you have been raised with Christ… your life is hidden with Christ in God” — same forbidden-substitution rule as 2:12 (never 환생/윤회); “life hidden with Christ” must convey present hiddenness awaiting future glorious disclosure, not otherworldly withdrawal from earthly responsibility (the household codes immediately follow in this same chapter).Human theologian
Hope of Glory in Christ3:4Medium”When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory” — 소망/영광 language must be tied to Christ’s person and future appearing, not a vague this-worldly aspiration.Native speaker review

3:5-11 — Putting Off the Old Self, Idolatry of Covetousness, Wrath, Status Distinctions

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Covetousness as Idolatry3:5Critical”Covetousness, which is idolatry” — 우상숭배 here must be taught in direct connection with the Romans baseline’s Critical 기복신앙 (“fortune-seeking faith”) caution under “grace”; materialistic, prosperity-oriented spiritual practice constitutes actual idol-worship even when nominally directed toward the true God.Human theologian
(Wrath of God — supporting universal accountability)3:6Medium-High하나님의 진노 is a personal, righteous, judicial response to sin, not impersonal bad luck (액운).Human theologian
Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New3:9, 3:10Critical옛 사람/새 사람 must be taught as flowing directly from union with Christ (2:12, 20; 3:1, 3), a decisive, Christ-accomplished identity-change received by faith — NEVER a Confucian self-cultivation project toward becoming a “superior person” (군자, via 수신) nor a Buddhist enlightenment-transformation (해탈, 깨달음). “Renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator” (창조하신 이의 형상을 따라) links back to 1:15’s 형상 and must preserve that connection.Human theologian
Ethnic, Religious, and Social Status Distinctions Abolished in Christ3:11High”Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised… slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all” — must resist any softening toward Korea’s ethnic-nationalist 단일민족 self-conception; this is a radical status-erasure claim, not a diplomatic aspiration. Directly parallel to the Romans baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine, extended here to slave/free.Human theologian

3:12-17 — Putting On the New Self’s Virtues, Peace of Christ, Thanksgiving

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New3:12-14CriticalThe positive virtue-list (“compassion, kindness… love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony”) is the constructive half of the 옛 사람/새 사람 doctrine; must retain the same Critical-tier care as 3:9-10 since it completes the same doctrinal unit.Human theologian
The Peace of Christ Governing Community Life3:15Medium평강 (“let the peace of Christ rule/arbitrate in your hearts”) is the distinct epistolary/communal sense, kept apart from 화평 (justification-peace, 1:20); translators must apply the context-appropriate term rather than treating the two as interchangeable.Native speaker review
Thanksgiving3:15, 3:17Low감사 reused exactly; standard term, minimal risk.Automated review
Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ3:16High”Teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom” — same 지혜 qualification requirement as 1:9, 1:28, 2:3; 훈계하다 (admonish) is related to but stronger-toned than the baseline’s 권면하다 (exhort); both may co-occur here.Human theologian

3:18-4:1 — Household Codes; Slaves, Masters, and Divine Justice

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Household Codes3:18, 3:19, 3:20, 3:21Critical복종하다 (wives’ submission) must always be paired with the husband’s command to love sacrificially and never be harsh (3:19), qualified “as is fitting in the Lord”; must never be rendered or taught in a way that could justify domestic abuse or coercion. Korea’s historically rigorous Confucian hierarchical family ethics — including the now-rejected traditional “three obediences” (삼종지도) doctrine already flagged under obedience_of_faith in the Romans baseline — creates real risk of uncritical patriarchal reading. Every household instruction must carry equal doctrinal weight with its correlate balancing command (husbands’ love; fathers not provoking children, 3:21).Human theologian
Slaves, Masters, and Divine Justice3:22, 3:23, 3:24, 3:25CriticalPaul’s text deliberately contrasts the human “master according to the flesh” (육신의 상전/주인) with “the Lord” (주님); the honorific 주님 (with its mandatory 님 suffix, reserved exclusively for God/Christ/Spirit) must NEVER be applied to a human slave-master. Confusing these terms is a severe honorific-grammar and doctrinal error. “No partiality” (3:25) affirms God’s impartial judgment regardless of social status.Human theologian
Inheritance and Adoption into God’s Family3:24High”You will receive the inheritance as your reward” (유업의 상) — a gracious reward from Christ the true Master, extended even to those (slaves) excluded from ordinary human inheritance structures; connects directly to the Romans baseline’s Critical adoption (양자) entry.Human theologian

Chapter 3 summary: Every section carries load-bearing doctrinal content; no section reviewed as doctrinally inert.

Chapter 4 (4:1-18)

4:1 — Masters’ Obligation of Justice

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Slaves, Masters, and Divine Justice4:1Critical”Masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven” — 의와 공평 (justice and fairness) is a distinct, contextual sense (equitable treatment) from the baseline’s Critical forensic-standing “righteousness” (의) entry; must be clearly distinguished in teaching to avoid a confused doctrinal reading. Reinforces the 주님/주인 distinction from 3:22-24.Human theologian

4:2-6 — Prayer, Wisdom toward Outsiders, Gracious Speech

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Apostolic Ministry and Gospel Proclamation4:2, 4:3, 4:4Medium”Praying… that God may open to us a door for the word” — must be presented as Spirit-dependent gospel opportunity, not an achievement-oriented ministry metric; continuous with the Romans baseline’s caution on Korea’s success-and-growth-oriented missions culture.Native speaker review
The Mystery of Christ Now Openly Revealed4:3Critical”That I may declare the mystery of Christ” — same 비밀 resolution-clause requirement applies at this closing occurrence as at 1:26-27 and 2:2; consistency across all four occurrences (1:26, 1:27, 2:2, 4:3) is required.Human theologian
Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ4:5High”Walk in wisdom toward outsiders” — 지혜 here is practical, relational wisdom in gospel witness; same qualification discipline applies to avoid Buddhist-enlightenment overtones.Human theologian
(Grace, TM reuse — gracious speech)4:6Critical (per Romans baseline)“Let your speech always be gracious (은혜로운/은혜 가운데), seasoned with salt” — 은혜 must be reused exactly per the Romans baseline; must not drift toward a merely socially pleasant-speech sense divorced from the term’s doctrinal weight.Human theologian

4:7-18 — Personal Greetings and Closing

DoctrinePassagesRiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
The Church as Christ’s Body (local-church sense)4:15, 4:16Medium교회 here denotes the specific local house-church (Nympha’s house), distinct from the universal-body sense of 1:18, 1:24; must be flagged per-occurrence so translators do not default to the universal sense throughout.Native speaker review
Christian Fellowship (TM reuse)4:7-14, 4:17-18Low교제 and general greeting/commendation language reused from the Romans baseline; standard, low-risk personal-greeting register.Automated review

Chapter 4 summary: Sections 4:1-6 carry substantial load-bearing doctrinal content (household codes conclusion, mystery, wisdom, grace). Section 4:7-18 (personal greetings/closing) is reviewed explicitly and confirmed to introduce no new doctrine or Critical/High terminology beyond established, low-risk fellowship and greeting vocabulary already covered in the Romans baseline; it is noted here as reviewed rather than silently omitted.

Cross-Cutting Observations for Phase 2 Translation

  1. Chapter 2 is the highest-risk chapter in the letter, containing 5 of the 10 Critical-tier doctrines (fullness/deity, warning against false teaching, cosmic powers, mystery, certificate of debt) within 23 verses. Phase 2 batch processing should route Colossians 2 segments to human theologian review by default rather than relying solely on per-term flagging.

  2. The 주님 vs. 주인/육신의 상전 distinction (3:22-4:1) is the single highest-severity honorific-grammar risk in this curriculum. Any Phase 2 validation pass must specifically check that the honorific 님 suffix is never attached to a human-master reference in this passage.

  3. The 비밀 (mystery) resolution clause recurs four times (1:26, 1:27, 2:2, 4:3) and must be rendered with identical doctrinal framing — NOW REVEALED to all who believe — at every occurrence, given the concrete, contemporary relevance of Korean new-religious-movement “hidden knowledge” claims.

  4. 1:15-20 (the core passage) supplies the doctrinal vocabulary (형상, 먼저 나신 이, 만물, 충만, 머리, 화목하게 하다) that recurs and is presupposed throughout chapters 2-3 (2:9-10, 2:19, 3:1, 3:10, 3:15); consistency of these renderings from their first occurrence in 1:15-20 forward is a Phase 2 cross-document requirement equivalent in importance to the Romans baseline’s requirement for consistent rendering of Romans 1:16-17 and 8:28.

  5. The household codes and slavery instructions (3:18-4:1) require paired-command review: no Phase 2 segment covering wives’/children’s/slaves’ instructions should be approved without confirming the correlate husbands’/fathers’/masters’ instruction is rendered with equal doctrinal weight in the same document.

  6. No chapter or major section of Colossians was found doctrinally inert. Even the closing greetings (4:7-18) were reviewed and confirmed to rely only on already-established, low-risk Romans-baseline vocabulary (교제, standard greeting forms), with the sole new item being the local/universal church-sense flag at 4:15-16 (Medium risk, native speaker review).

This document extends, and is fully consistent with, doctrine_risk_registry.json (Colossians) and 08_core_glossary.md (Colossians). It supersedes no baseline Romans doctrine and introduces no doctrine not already present in the Colossians doctrine risk registry.

Critical Risk Doctrines

The Supremacy of Christ over Creation

Korean name: 만물을 다스리시는 그리스도의 우월성
Key terms: image of God, firstborn of all creation, all things, thrones/dominions/rulers/authorities, hold together
Review routing: Human theologian

먼저 나신 이 (firstborn) must never be rendered as a bare noun implying Christ is the first created being. Korea has an active, contemporary Jehovah’s Witness presence whose Korean-language literature specifically exploits this verse to argue Christ is a created being — this is a live pastoral risk, not a merely historical one. The rank/preeminence sense (sovereign heir existing before and outside creation) must be preserved without exception.

Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily

Korean name: 그리스도 안에 육체로 거하시는 신성의 충만
Key terms: fullness, deity/Godhead, bodily, dwell
Review routing: Human theologian

The Colossian false teaching apparently held that divine fullness was distributed among intermediate spiritual powers; 충만 must always be taught as complete and undivided in Christ alone. 육체로 (bodily) must affirm a real, permanent human body, never the Buddhist 화신 (avatar/provisional-manifestation) concept already forbidden under ‘incarnation’ in the Romans baseline, and never framed as episodic shamanistic spirit-indwelling/possession.

Sufficiency of Christ’s Atonement (vs. Apostolic Suffering)

Korean name: 그리스도의 속죄의 충분성 (사도의 고난과의 구분)
Key terms: what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions, filling up
Review routing: Human theologian

A surface reading of ‘filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions’ could imply Christ’s atoning death was insufficient and requires supplementation — a direct contradiction of the curriculum’s own core Supremacy/Sufficiency doctrine. Korean rendering and teaching notes must explicitly distinguish Paul’s own missionary/pastoral suffering from Christ’s unique, complete, once-for-all atoning suffering, which lacks nothing for salvation.

The Mystery of Christ Now Openly Revealed

Korean name: 그리스도의 비밀이 이제는 나타남
Key terms: mystery, hidden, now revealed, full knowledge
Review routing: Human theologian

Korea has a documented, ongoing phenomenon of indigenous new religious movements/cult groups (some claiming Christian identity) that teach they alone possess the ‘hidden mystery’ or exclusive correct scriptural interpretation reserved for an inner circle. 비밀 must always retain its resolution clause: NOW OPENLY REVEALED to ALL who believe — never a continuing secret reserved for spiritual elites or a teacher’s inner circle. One of the highest-priority pastoral safeguards in this curriculum for the Korean context.

Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism

Korean name: 거짓 가르침과 혼합주의에 대한 경고
Key terms: philosophy and empty deceit, human tradition, elemental spirits of the world, regulations, self-made religion
Review routing: Human theologian

The letter’s central named threat requires precise, non-blanket teaching. In the Korean context this must be taught with concrete contemporary categories: syncretistic blending of Christian profession with shamanistic practice, folk-astrology (사주팔자), geomancy (풍수, resonant with the 오행 elemental-force cosmology behind 세상의 초등학문), or new-religious-movement doctrine — any system, however intellectually or spiritually dressed, that displaces Christ’s all-sufficiency.

Cosmic Spiritual Powers Created, Subordinate, and Defeated

Korean name: 그리스도께 지음받고 복종하며 이미 패배한 영적 세력들
Key terms: thrones/dominions/rulers/authorities, elemental spirits of the world, worship of angels, disarmed the powers
Review routing: Human theologian

Korean shamanism (무속신앙) operates a populated, ranked spirit-world (조상신, 산신, 잡신) addressed or channeled by a mudang in a gut ritual. Every conceivable rank of spirit-power named or implied in Colossians must be taught as Christ’s creature, already publicly and decisively defeated at the cross — never an object of veneration, negotiation, appeasement, or fear for the believer.

Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New

Korean name: 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고 새 사람을 입음
Key terms: old self, new self, renewed in knowledge after the Creator’s image
Review routing: Human theologian

Must be taught as flowing directly from union with Christ (2:12,20; 3:1,3), a decisive, Christ-accomplished identity-change received by faith — NEVER a self-directed moral-improvement project comparable to Confucian self-cultivation toward becoming a ‘superior person’ (군자, via 수신) or Buddhist enlightenment-transformation (해탈, 깨달음). This doctrine is central to the curriculum and carries high risk of being assimilated to indigenous self-cultivation frameworks.

Covetousness as Idolatry

Korean name: 탐심 곧 우상숭배
Key terms: covetousness, idolatry
Review routing: Human theologian

This verse’s explicit equation of covetousness with idolatry gives Colossians its own sharp, independent scriptural warrant directly reinforcing the Romans baseline’s Critical 기복신앙 (‘fortune-seeking faith’) caution — materialistic, prosperity-oriented spiritual practice constitutes actual idol-worship even when nominally directed toward the true God. Must be taught in direct connection with the baseline’s ‘grace’ entry.

Household Codes

Korean name: 가정 생활 규범
Key terms: wives submit, husbands love, children obey, fathers do not provoke, master vs. Lord distinction
Review routing: Human theologian

Korea’s historically rigorous Confucian hierarchical family ethics — including the traditional, now-rejected ‘three obediences’ (삼종지도) doctrine already flagged under ‘obedience_of_faith’ in the Romans baseline — creates real risk of these instructions being read as reinforcing uncritical patriarchal hierarchy rather than the gospel-qualified, mutually self-giving relationships Paul describes. Every household instruction must be taught with its correlate balancing command (husbands’ sacrificial love and prohibition against harshness; fathers not provoking children) given equal doctrinal weight, and never used to justify domestic abuse, coercion, or the erasure of a family member’s dignity as a fellow member of Christ’s body.

Slaves, Masters, and Divine Justice

Korean name: 종과 상전, 그리고 하나님의 공평하신 심판
Key terms: obey earthly masters, master (kata sarka) vs. the Lord, justice and fairness, no partiality
Review routing: Human theologian

Paul’s own text deliberately contrasts the human ‘master according to the flesh’ (κατὰ σάρκα κύριος) with ‘the Lord’ (ὁ κύριος) within the same short passage. The honorific 주님 (with its baseline-mandated 님 suffix, reserved exclusively for God/Christ/Spirit) must NEVER be applied to the human slave-master; confusing these terms is a severe honorific-grammar and doctrinal error. This passage additionally requires careful historical framing distinguishing first-century slavery from any modern application, a matter for teaching notes rather than the translation itself.

High Risk Doctrines

Christ as Head of the Church

Korean name: 교회의 머리 되신 그리스도
Key terms: head, body, the beginning, firstborn from the dead
Review routing: Human theologian

머리 (head) risks collapsing into Korea’s strong existing cultural frame for patriarchal family authority (가장, under Confucian family structure), conveying only hierarchical authority without the organic life-source sense (2:19’s ‘holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body grows’). Must not be reduced to a merely administrative or authoritarian relationship.

Reconciliation through the Cross

Korean name: 십자가를 통한 화목
Key terms: reconcile, blood of the cross, enemies/alienated, peace through the cross
Review routing: Human theologian

Korean 화목 is also the everyday secular/Confucian term for family or social harmony (화목한 가정), risking the flattening of God’s costly, cross-accomplished reconciliation of hostile sinners into a general achievable ideal of relational harmony or conflict-avoidance. Must always be anchored explicitly to ‘through the blood of his cross.‘

Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)

Korean name: 그리스도와 함께 죽고 함께 살리심을 받음
Key terms: buried and raised with Christ, baptism, life hidden with Christ, put to death what is earthly
Review routing: Human theologian

The forbidden-substitution rule for resurrection (never 환생 rebirth, never 윤회 reincarnation cycle) applies with equal force to this union language. Must convey a definitive, already-accomplished spiritual union appropriated by faith and pictured in baptism, not a repeatable ritual or a gradually self-attained transformation akin to ascetic self-cultivation.

Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ

Korean name: 그리스도 안에 감추어진 지혜와 지식
Key terms: wisdom, spiritual understanding, full knowledge, treasures of wisdom and knowledge
Review routing: Human theologian

Korean 지혜 is also the standard rendering for Buddhist prajñā (반야지혜), the transcendent wisdom leading to enlightenment/liberation. Must always be qualified as ‘신령한’ (Spirit-given) and Christ-grounded; likewise 아는 것/참지식 must be distinguished from Korean Buddhist 깨달음 (self-attained enlightenment) — biblical wisdom and knowledge are received by grace, not self-cultivated insight.

Faith and Doctrinal Stability against False Teaching

Korean name: 거짓 가르침에 맞선 믿음의 견고함
Key terms: faith, firmness of faith, rooted and built up and established
Review routing: Human theologian

Colossians extends 믿음 to denote settled doctrinal stability resisting the ‘philosophy’ of 2:8 — this stability sense must not be flattened into a vague general confidence or conflated with the intense Korean status/achievement-conscious drive for certainty in secular contexts; it is confidence specifically rooted in Christ and apostolic teaching.

Inheritance and Adoption into God’s Family

Korean name: 하나님 가족의 유업과 양자 됨
Key terms: inheritance of the saints, reward of the inheritance, kingdom of the Son
Review routing: Human theologian

Directly connected to the Romans baseline’s Critical/High ‘adoption’ (양자) entry. Traditional Korean heir-adoption existed primarily to continue Confucian ancestor-memorial rites (제사), an instrumental rather than relational purpose; Colossians’ inheritance is a relational, gracious gift from Christ the true Master, remarkably extended even to slaves excluded from ordinary human inheritance structures (3:24).

Ethnic, Religious, and Social Status Distinctions Abolished in Christ

Korean name: 그리스도 안에서 폐하여진 민족적·종교적·사회적 구별
Key terms: Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, slave and free, Christ is all and in all
Review routing: Human theologian

Directly parallels the Romans baseline’s High-risk ‘unity_of_jews_and_gentiles’ doctrine, extended here to slave/free status. Korea’s historically powerful ethnic-nationalist self-conception (단일민족, ‘single ethnic nation’) risks softening this verse’s radical status-erasure into a merely diplomatic or aspirational statement rather than Paul’s actual claim that no social, ethnic, or status category confers or denies spiritual standing in Christ.

Medium Risk Doctrines

The Church as Christ’s Body

Korean name: 그리스도의 몸 된 교회
Key terms: body, head, church (universal and local)
Review routing: Native speaker review

교회 must be flagged for universal (1:18,24) versus local house-church (4:15-16) sense per occurrence; 몸 must be paired consistently with 머리 to preserve the organic head-body metaphor across all its occurrences.

Hope of Glory in Christ

Korean name: 영광의 소망이신 그리스도
Key terms: hope, glory, Christ in you, the hope of glory, appearing with him in glory
Review routing: Native speaker review

소망 must be distinguished from a vague optimistic wish or a fortune-seeking-adjacent hope for material blessing (a register risk paralleling the baseline’s 기복신앙 caution); it is a certainty grounded in the person and promise of Christ, consummated at his future appearing.

The Peace of Christ Governing Community Life

Korean name: 그리스도의 평강이 다스리는 공동체
Key terms: peace of Christ, let it rule/arbitrate, one body
Review routing: Native speaker review

평강 (the epistolary/communal peace sense) must be kept distinct from 화평 (the justification-peace sense of 1:20, reused from Romans 5:1); translators must apply the context-appropriate term rather than treating the two as interchangeable synonyms, per established KRV convention.

Baptism and Circumcision Fulfilled in Christ

Korean name: 그리스도 안에서 성취된 세례와 할례
Key terms: circumcision made without hands, baptism, buried with him
Review routing: Native speaker review

세례 must not be confused with shamanistic ritual washing for removing impurity or misfortune (부정을 씻음); 할례 requires OT covenantal background explanation given the absence of any native Korean cultural equivalent rite.

Apostolic Ministry and Gospel Proclamation

Korean name: 사도의 사역과 복음 전파
Key terms: stewardship of God, door for the word, walk in wisdom toward outsiders, gracious speech
Review routing: Native speaker review

Paul’s suffering and labor must be presented as Spirit-empowered gospel service, not achievement-oriented ministry success measured by growth metrics — a caution directly continuous with the Romans baseline’s note on Korea’s success-and-growth-oriented missions culture.

Low Risk Doctrines

Thanksgiving

Korean name: 감사
Key terms: give thanks, thanksgiving, abounding in thanksgiving
Review routing: Automated review

Standard term; minor risk of generic secular gratitude without reference to God specifically, consistent with the Romans baseline’s existing Low-risk assessment.
