Core Glossary
08 — Core Glossary: 1 Kings (Full Book) for German Destination-Language Translation
Curriculum: 1 Kings
Destination language: German
Governing baseline: translation_memory.json (Romans Language Package, v9) — all overlapping terms below reuse the recorded baseline rendering exactly; new terms are marked NEW.
This glossary supplements, and must be read alongside, the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json. It does not duplicate baseline entries in full; where a term is reused unchanged, only the essential fields are repeated for reference, with a note on any book-specific extension of sense.
A. Reused Baseline Terms (Applied to 1 Kings)
| Term | Hebrew (transliteration) | LXX Greek | German Rendering | Baseline Risk | 1 Kings-Specific Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| God | אֱלֹהִים (Elohim) | θεός | Gott | Critical | Stable; also underlies “other gods” (andere Götter), the book’s technical idolatry term — see NEW entries below. |
| David | דָּוִד (Dawid) | Δαυίδ | David | Low | Dynastic promise (2:4; 8:25) is the book’s structural backbone. |
| Israel | יִשְׂרָאֵל (Yisra’el) | Ἰσραήλ | Israel | Medium | Now also names one half of the divided kingdom (post-ch. 12) — disambiguate “Israel” (the whole covenant people) from “Israel” (the northern kingdom only) in teaching material. |
| covenant | בְּרִית (berit) | διαθήκη | Bund | Medium | Used both theologically (8:23; 9:1–9) and in the secular treaty sense (5:12, with Hiram) — flag the double use. |
| holy / holiness | קֹדֶש (qodesh) | ἅγιος/ἁγιασμός | heilig / Heiligkeit | Medium-High | Extended architecturally to das Allerheiligste (Most Holy Place, ch. 6) and corporately to Israel’s separation (8:53, hivdalta). |
| glory | כָּבוֹד (kavod) | δόξα | Herrlichkeit | Medium (baseline) → High in this book | Extended to a visible, spatially localized cloud-theophany sense (8:10–11) not present in the baseline’s NT relational-glory definition. |
| prophet | נָבִיא (navi) | προφήτης | Prophet | Low (baseline) → Medium-High in this book | Must be disambiguated from false/court prophets (18:19; 22:6) — title alone does not guarantee legitimacy. |
| prophecy / prophetic word | (various) | προφητεία | Weissagung / das Wort des HERRN | Low | The fixed formula “word of the LORD” (13:1 and throughout) is the book’s dominant prophetic-authority marker; render identically at every occurrence. |
| sin | חָטָא (chata) | ἁμαρτία | Sünde | Medium | Grounds the covenant-curse logic of 8:33–50 and 9:6–9; watch for colloquial-trivialization risk as in the baseline. |
| kingdom of God | (n/a — OT has no exact equivalent) | βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ | Reich Gottes | Medium (baseline) | Must be kept lexically distinct from this book’s political kingdom vocabulary — see Königreich (NEW) below. |
| election | בָּחַר (bachar) | ἐκλογή | Erwählung | High | Applied here to Jerusalem’s corporate/geographic election (8:44; 11:13, 32) — distinct register from the baseline’s individual/salvific election doctrine; do not conflate. |
| lord (title, generic) | אָדוֹן (adon) | κύριος | Herr | Critical (baseline) | Reserved for the everyday/generic honorific sense; must be visually and typographically distinguished from der HERR (YHWH, see NEW below). |
| messiah / anointed one | מָשִׁיחַ (mashiach) | χριστός | Messias | Medium | Etymologically rooted in this book’s מָשַׁח mashach (“anoint,” ch. 1, 19) — a valuable forward-teaching link, not a direct occurrence of the title itself in 1 Kings. |
| repentance (NT sense) | — (μετάνοια governed by baseline) | μετάνοια | Buße | High (baseline) | Explicitly NOT the rendering for this book’s shub (“turn”) vocabulary — see NEW entry umkehren below; keep the two registers separate. |
| Moses | מֹשֶׁה (Mosheh) | Μωϋσῆς | Mose | Low | 8:53, 56; establishes the prophetic-mediation pattern continued by Ahijah, Elijah, Micaiah. |

| inheritance | נַחֲלָה (nachalah) | κληρονομία | ”Allotted possession, inheritance” | Israel’s concrete, territorial land-inheritance — distinct from NT spiritualized inheritance-in-Christ | ”inheritance,” “heritage” | Erbe / Erbteil | Medium | Temple as God’s Dwelling; Divided Kingdom |

D. Editorial Notes for Phase 2 Translators
- YHWH vs. Baal vs. Herr is the single highest-stakes typographic/lexical discipline in this package.
der HERR(small capitals) = YHWH only.Herr(no small capitals) = the generic honorific/title sense (Adonai, Kyrios-as-address).Baal= always transliterated, never translated as “Herr” despite its literal meaning. Any confusion among these three collapses the doctrinal argument of 1 Kings 18. - chesed and shub must not be assimilated to the baseline’s already-fixed NT vocabulary for charis (Gnade) and metanoia (Buße) respectively. Recommended renderings (Gnade und Treue / Güte und Treue; umkehren) preserve the OT covenant-relational register while still permitting forward-teaching connections to the NT terms once the distinction is taught explicitly.
- Königreich (political kingdom) vs. Reich Gottes (baseline theological kingdom) is a new disambiguation this package introduces; consistent application throughout chapters 11–22 is required.
- All fixed formulas — das Wort des HERRN, tun, was böse/recht ist in den Augen des HERRN, Der HERR ist Gott!, ein stilles, sanftes Sausen, hinken auf beiden Seiten — must be rendered identically at every occurrence throughout the book, matching this glossary’s recommended wording, consistent with the baseline’s treatment of other fixed liturgical/confessional phrases (e.g., the Lord’s Prayer, the Philippians 2 Lordship confession).
- Named foreign deities (Baal, Aschera, Astarte, Milkom/Molech, Kemosch) must always remain specific proper names, never generically flattened to “Götzen” (“idols”) alone, since the text’s rhetorical strategy depends on naming Israel’s specific covenant infidelities.
Critical Risk Terms
Lord
Approved rendering: Herr
Transliteration: Herr
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Meister, Chef
Original: אָדוֹן
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). CRITICAL, and MORE acute in 1 Kings than in the Romans baseline: reserved for the everyday/generic honorific sense (Hebrew adon) and must be visually/typographically distinguished both from ‘der HERR’ (YHWH, see yhwh_divine_name) and from ‘Baal’ (see baal), whose literal meaning IS ‘lord/master.’ German has no separate everyday honorific protecting either boundary.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Gerechtigkeit
Transliteration: Gerechtigkeit
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Tugend
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). 1 Kings 8:32 uses the same Hebrew root (tsdq) for an ordinary human-court judicial verdict (‘den Gerechten gerecht sprechen’) — see condemning_vindicating. Do not import the Pauline forensic-justification doctrine into that interpersonal legal context; the shared root is a valuable teaching bridge only once introduced carefully, never a silent substitution.
Justification
Approved rendering: Rechtfertigung
Transliteration: Rechtfertigung
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Erlösung (distinct concept)
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). Not itself occurring in 1 Kings, but essential background for correctly fencing condemning_vindicating (8:32) away from any premature forensic-soteriological reading.
Yhwh Divine Name
Approved rendering: der HERR
Transliteration: der HERR
Doctrine: Divine Name Theology: der HERR, Herr, and Baal
Rejected alternatives: Herr (loses the covenant-Name distinction), Jehova (Jehovah’s Witness NWT rendering — never use)
Original: יהוה
Category: God
NEW. The personal, covenantal name of God (YHWH), rendered in German Bible tradition as ‘der HERR’ in small capitals, distinguishing the covenant Name from the ordinary honorific ‘Herr’ (also the everyday German title ‘Mr.’) and from the transliterated proper name ‘Baal’ (which literally means ‘lord/master’). This three-way distinction is the single highest-stakes typographic and doctrinal discipline in this package; collapsing any two of the three destroys the argument of 1 Kings 18:21, 39 and 8:23. Never substitute ‘Jehova’ (a documented Jehovah’s Witness Neue-Welt-Übersetzung rendering that must never be echoed per the German translation landscape survey).
Baal
Approved rendering: Baal
Transliteration: Baal
Doctrine: Elijah and the Contest with Baal
Rejected alternatives: Herr (destroys the Carmel contest’s rhetorical force), Meister
Original: בַּעַל
Category: God
NEW. Canaanite storm-and-fertility deity; the common noun ‘lord, master, owner, husband’ used as a proper divine name. Must always be transliterated as ‘Baal’ and never rendered by any German word for ‘lord’ or ‘master,’ since the entire rhetorical force of 1 Kings 18 depends on Israel choosing between two candidates for the title ‘lord’ — der HERR and Baal — a choice that collapses into nonsense if both are rendered with overlapping German vocabulary.
Serve Other Gods
Approved rendering: andere Götter dienen
Transliteration: andere Götter dienen
Doctrine: Idolatry and Its Consequences
NEW. 1 Kings 9:6, the LORD’s explicit warning (‘if you turn aside from following me… and serve other gods’). This is the first explicit statement of the curse that structurally governs the rest of the book (division of the kingdom, exile of both Israel and Judah); flag for mandatory theologian review as the doctrinal turning point of the Idolatry doctrine, distinct in weight from the general category term other_gods.
Golden Calves
Approved rendering: die goldenen Kälber
Transliteration: die goldenen Kälber
Doctrine: The Golden Calf Apostasy
Original: עֶגְלֵי זָהָב
Category: Idolatry
NEW. Jeroboam’s cultic images at Bethel and Dan (eglei zahav, 12:28), deliberately echoing and indicting the golden calf of Exodus 32 (‘these are your gods, O Israel’ ≈ Exodus 32:4, 8). The paradigmatic act of state-sponsored idolatry in the book; teaching material must draw the Exodus 32 allusion explicitly or German readers will read generic idol-worship rather than recognizing deliberate re-enactment of Israel’s founding apostasy.
House Become Ruins
Approved rendering: dieses Haus wird ein Steinhaufen werden
Transliteration: dieses Haus wird ein Steinhaufen werden
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
NEW. 1 Kings 9:8: the covenant-curse consequence stated in direct architectural terms, deliberately inverting the temple-dedication joy of ch. 8. Must be taught in direct tension with 8:12-13/8:27-29’s dwelling-theology: the temple’s status as God’s dwelling is conditional on covenant fidelity, not an automatic guarantee.
Lord He Is God Confession
Approved rendering: Der HERR ist Gott!
Transliteration: Der HERR ist Gott!
Doctrine: Elijah and the Contest with Baal
Rejected alternatives: der Herr ist ein Gott (softened, implies one god among several — forbidden)
Original: יהוה הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים
Category: Elijah/Baal
NEW. The confessional climax of the Carmel contest (YHWH hu ha’Elohim, 18:39). Render with the small-capitals ‘der HERR’ convention preserved and without any softening, and preserve the Hebrew’s doubling (the cry is repeated). This is the closest OT structural parallel to the baseline’s Critical-risk NT confession ‘Jesus ist Herr’ (Romans 10:9) and must receive the same mandatory theologian review tier.
High Risk Terms
Election
Approved rendering: Erwählung
Transliteration: Erwählung
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Original: בָּחַר
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). 1 Kings extension: applied corporately/geographically to Jerusalem as the site of God’s Name (8:44; 11:13, 32, 36), a distinct register from the baseline’s individual/salvific election. Keep the two registers distinct while allowing the theological continuity to be taught explicitly; conflating them risks a category error in either direction.
Grace
Approved rendering: Gnade
Transliteration: Gnade
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: Barmherzigkeit, Wohlwollen
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). CRITICAL FENCE for this book: NEVER use bare ‘Gnade’ to render the Hebrew chesed (see steadfast_love). The baseline has already invested ‘Gnade’ exclusively with the unmerited, apart-from-covenant-performance sense of NT charis; chesed in 1 Kings 8:23-25 is explicitly covenant-conditioned loyalty-love tied to obedience. Collapsing the two imports Reformation sola-gratia freight into a text that is not making that argument.
Repentance
Approved rendering: Buße
Transliteration: Buße
Doctrine: Repentance
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). CRITICAL FENCE for this book: NEVER use ‘Buße’/‘Buße tun’ to render the Hebrew shub (see turn_return). Shub is fundamentally spatial/relational (‘turning back’ toward covenant loyalty); ‘Buße’ is the NT’s cognitive-transformational metanoia term with its own contested Reformation-era sacramental history. The two registers must be taught as distinct, not merged.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Rettung
Transliteration: Rettung
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Heil (Nazi-era contamination risk), Erlösung (more existential/liberation-flavored)
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). Relevant background for the parallel this book draws between ‘Der HERR ist Gott!’ (18:39, see lord_he_is_god_confession) and the baseline’s salvation-confession doctrine (Romans 10:9); the ‘Heil’ caution applies with equal force to any 1 Kings teaching material discussing deliverance from drought, famine, exile, or Baal.
Other Gods
Approved rendering: andere Götter
Transliteration: andere Götter
Doctrine: Idolatry and Its Consequences
Rejected alternatives: Götzen (too generic, erases the Deuteronomistic technical-term function)
Original: אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים
Category: God
NEW. The Deuteronomistic History’s standard technical term (elohim acherim) for any object of illegitimate worship. Must remain a general theological category term distinct from the book’s specific named deities (Baal, Aschera, Astarte, Milkom, Kemosch); German readers should understand this as the book’s own summary label for the specific named infidelities catalogued elsewhere, never a vague synonym for ‘idols’ in general.
Asherah
Approved rendering: Aschera
Transliteration: Aschera
Doctrine: Named Foreign Deities and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: Götze (idol, too generic), heiliger Baum/Pfahl (loses the deity/cult-object ambiguity as a proper name)
Original: אֲשֵׁרָה
Category: God
NEW. A Canaanite goddess and/or the cultic wooden pole/image associated with her worship (1 Kings 14:15, 23; and throughout the regnal evaluations). Retain as transliterated proper name, never flattened to a generic idol-word; the specificity of named rival cultic realities is the point of the text’s indictment.
Ashtoreth Milcom Chemosh
Approved rendering: Astarte / Milkom / Kemosch
Transliteration: Astarte / Milkom / Kemosch
Doctrine: Named Foreign Deities and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: Götzen (generic, erases the itemized indictment)
Original: עַשְׁתֹּרֶת / מִלְכֹּם / כְּמוֹשׁ
Category: God
NEW. Specific Sidonian, Ammonite, and Moabite deities that Solomon’s foreign wives drew him to worship (1 Kings 11:5, 7, 33). Retain as transliterated proper names (‘Astarte/Aschtoret,’ ‘Milkom’ or ‘Molech,’ ‘Kemosch’); the narrator’s point is Solomon’s itemized, specific covenant infidelity, not generic religious decline.
Kingdom Political
Approved rendering: Königreich
Transliteration: Königreich
Doctrine: The Divided Kingdom and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: Reich (too easily collapses toward Reich Gottes)
Original: מַמְלָכָה
Category: Covenant
NEW. The political-territorial realm of Israel/Judah (mamlakah), before and after the division of the united monarchy (11:11, 31; 12:21, 26; and throughout). Must be kept lexically distinct from the baseline’s already-established kingdom_of_god (‘Reich Gottes,’ theological-eschatological sense) — a disambiguation this package introduces that the NT baseline never required. Apply consistently from 11:11 forward.
Law Of Moses Standard
Approved rendering: Satzungen, Gebote, Rechte, Zeugnisse; das Gesetz des Mose
Transliteration: Satzungen, Gebote, Rechte, Zeugnisse; das Gesetz des Mose
Doctrine: The Conditional Davidic Covenant
Category: Covenant
NEW. The dense concentration of Torah-vocabulary in David’s charge to Solomon (2:3): chuqqim (statutes), mitzvot (commandments), mishpatim (judgments/ordinances), edvot (testimonies), governed by torat Mosheh (the Law of Moses). Reuses the baseline’s ‘Gesetz’ (High risk, ‘Gesetz und Evangelium’ cornerstone) in its OT Torah sense. This is the hermeneutical key for the entire book’s regnal-evaluation structure; flag for theologian review as a core-doctrine-setting passage.
Steadfast Love
Approved rendering: Gnade und Treue / Güte und Treue
Transliteration: Gnade und Treue / Güte und Treue
Doctrine: Chesed: God’s Covenant Loyalty
Rejected alternatives: Gnade (bare — forbidden, see the grace entry’s fence), Barmherzigkeit allein (loses the loyalty/reliability component)
Original: חֶסֶד
Category: Covenant
NEW. Hebrew chesed (1 Kings 8:23): reliable, loyalty-bound covenant love, inseparable from berit (covenant). NEVER render as bare ‘Gnade’ — see the mandatory fence recorded under the inherited grace entry. Recommend ‘Gnade und Treue’ or ‘Güte und Treue’ to keep both loyalty and favor visible without collapsing into either the NT sola-gratia sense or a bare covenant-transaction reading.
Most Holy Place
Approved rendering: das Allerheiligste
Transliteration: das Allerheiligste
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: קֹדֶש הַקֳּדָשִׁים
Category: Temple
NEW. The innermost temple chamber housing the ark (qodesh haqqodashim, lit. ‘holiness of holinesses,’ 6:16 and throughout). Directly extends the baseline’s heilig/Heiligkeit doctrine to its most spatially concentrated expression. Teaching material should connect this architectural superlative explicitly to the baseline’s set-apartness doctrine — holiness as degree and nearness to God, here expressed spatially.
The Name Theology
Approved rendering: der Name
Transliteration: der Name
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: שֵׁם
Category: Temple
NEW. God’s Name (shem) as his localized, relational mode of self-disclosure dwelling at the temple, distinct from his uncontainable person/being (8:16ff, 8:29 and throughout). Must never be taught as a mere linguistic label. German systematic-theological vocabulary (‘Namenstheologie,’ coined in German OT scholarship, e.g. von Rad) exists precisely for this concept and should be surfaced explicitly in teaching material — a genuine German-language asset.
Dwell
Approved rendering: wohnen
Transliteration: wohnen
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: יָשַׁב / שָׁכַן
Category: Temple
NEW. Two distinct Hebrew roots — yashab (‘sit, dwell, remain,’ general) and shakan (‘settle, encamp, abide,’ root of post-biblical ‘Shekhinah,’ more localized) — both conventionally rendered ‘wohnen’ in German, flattening a distinction the Hebrew text itself exploits (8:12-13, 27). The doctrine depends on holding ‘heaven cannot contain you’ together with ‘my Name shall be there’ without letting ‘wohnen’ silently resolve the tension into either bare transcendence or bare spatial containment. Mandatory translator’s note at first occurrence.
Glory Theophany
Approved rendering: Herrlichkeit
Transliteration: Herrlichkeit
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
NEW extension of the inherited baseline glory entry. God’s weighty, radiant presence and honor (kavod), here manifest visibly as a cloud filling the temple (8:10-11), preventing the priests from ministering — a more spatially localized, theophanic sense than the baseline’s relational/devotional NT usage. Teaching material must clarify this is the same underlying reality taking a distinctly OT, visible cloud-theophany form, not letting ‘Herrlichkeit’ default silently to its NT devotional register.
Separated Set Apart
Approved rendering: aussondern / absondern
Transliteration: aussondern / absondern
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: בָּדַל (hivdalta)
Category: Temple
NEW. Israel’s corporate, elective separation from all other peoples of the earth (badal, ‘hivdalta,’ 8:53) — the OT doctrinal root of the NT’s individual believer set-apartness (baseline Sainthood doctrine, Romans 1:7’s die Heiligen). Keep the corporate-Israel referent explicit; do not silently universalize to ‘the church’ without comment — a genuine anachronistic-over-application risk for German readers accustomed to NT ecclesiology.
Foreigner
Approved rendering: der Fremde
Transliteration: der Fremde
Doctrine: The Temple Prayer’s Universal Scope
Original: נָכְרִי
Category: Temple
NEW. A non-Israelite (nokri) whose prayer toward the temple is explicitly anticipated and welcomed (8:41-43). This passage is a crucial OT anchor for the baseline’s Critical/High-risk ‘Unity of Jews and Gentiles’ and ‘Universal Scope of the Gospel’ doctrines; translators must not soften the text’s inclusive scope by hedging, and teaching material should draw the forward connection explicitly.
Wisdom
Approved rendering: Weisheit
Transliteration: Weisheit
Doctrine: Solomon’s Wisdom and Its Limits
Original: חָכְמָה
Category: Wisdom
NEW. God-given skill, sagacity, and practical/moral discernment (chokmah), granted to Solomon as a gift in answer to prayer (3:5-12), not an innate human achievement. German cultural register (Klugheit/Bildung as prestige virtues in their own right) risks flattening this into secular intellectual achievement; teaching material must present wisdom as gift-and-responsibility and foreshadow (without resolving) that the wisest king becomes an idolater (ch. 11).
Condemning Vindicating
Approved rendering: den Schuldigen schuldig sprechen / den Gerechten gerecht sprechen
Transliteration: den Schuldigen schuldig sprechen / den Gerechten gerecht sprechen
Doctrine: The Gift of Wisdom and the Heart
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘Gerechtigkeit’ (imports the Pauline forensic doctrine prematurely)
Original: הִרְשִׁיעַ / הִצְדִּיק
Category: Wisdom
NEW. Forensic-judicial vindication or condemnation in a human court context (hitsdiq/hirshia, 8:32), sharing the root (tsdq) underlying the NT’s soteriological righteousness vocabulary but denoting this-worldly judicial verdicts. The shared root is a valuable teaching bridge to the NT doctrine only once introduced carefully; never a silent substitution.
High Place
Approved rendering: Höhe / Höhenheiligtum / Kulthöhe
Transliteration: Höhe / Höhenheiligtum / Kulthöhe
Doctrine: High Places and Partial Reform
Original: בָּמָה
Category: Idolatry
NEW. An elevated open-air cultic site (bamah), morally shifting across the book: legitimate before temple centralization (3:4), condemned as syncretistic once the temple is established (11:7; 12:31; 14:23; and throughout). No lexical fix resolves this; translators must not retroactively read 3:4 as sinful, and must not under-read later occurrences as neutral.
False Prophets
Approved rendering: falsche Propheten
Transliteration: falsche Propheten
Doctrine: True and False Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: falsche Brüder (a distinct, unrelated Galatians-package term — never cross-contaminate)
Original: נְבִיאֵי הַבַּעַל / (the 400 court prophets, ch. 22)
Category: Prophecy
NEW. Prophets who speak falsely — either as foreign Baal-prophets (ch. 18) or as nominally YHWH-affiliated court prophets who tell the king what he wants to hear (ch. 22). Keep lexically and conceptually distinct from the baseline’s unrelated Galatians term ‘falsche Brüder.’ Teaching material should flag the deliberate parallel-and-contrast between ch. 18’s external/pagan threat and ch. 22’s internal, court-sanctioned threat.
Lying Spirit
Approved rendering: Lügengeist
Transliteration: Lügengeist
Doctrine: True and False Prophecy
Original: רוּח שֶׁקֶר
Category: Prophecy
NEW. A difficult providence-text (ruach shaqer, 22:22-23) in which God is depicted as permitting/commissioning deception as a judgment mechanism against Ahab. Render literally and let the tension stand; mandatory theologian review; do not resolve the sovereignty/deception tension within the translation itself.
Word Of The Lord Formula
Approved rendering: das Wort des HERRN
Transliteration: das Wort des HERRN
Doctrine: Prophetic Confrontation of Kings
Original: דְּבַר־יהוה
Category: Prophecy
NEW. The recurring formula (devar-YHWH) introducing authoritative prophetic speech throughout the book (13:1 and dozens of further occurrences through ch. 22). Render identically at every occurrence, preserving the ‘der HERR’ small-capitals convention. This fixed formula is the backbone of the entire Prophetic Confrontation doctrine; inconsistent rendering would fragment the Hebrew text’s unified authority-marker.
Regnal Evaluation Formula
Approved rendering: tun, was recht/böse ist in den Augen des HERRN
Transliteration: tun, was recht/böse ist in den Augen des HERRN
Doctrine: The Regnal Evaluation Formula
Original: עָשָׂה הַיָּשָׁר / הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יהוה
Category: Divided Kingdom
NEW. The book’s fixed structural formula (asah hayashar/hara b’einei YHWH) for evaluating every king from ch. 15 onward. Render identically at every occurrence without stylistic variation; this is the primary literary device carrying the Divided Kingdom doctrine across the book’s second half.
Turn Return
Approved rendering: umkehren
Transliteration: umkehren
Doctrine: The Divided Kingdom and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: Buße tun (forbidden — see the repentance entry’s mandatory fence)
Original: שׁוּב
Category: Divided Kingdom
NEW. The Old Testament’s primary repentance-vocabulary root (shub): spatial/relational ‘turning back’ toward covenant loyalty (8:33, 35, 47-48; 21:27-29). NEVER render as ‘Buße tun.’ This distinction must be explicitly taught, not merely assumed, wherever both concepts might appear in the same lesson.
Limping Two Opinions
Approved rendering: hinken auf beiden Seiten
Transliteration: hinken auf beiden Seiten
Doctrine: Elijah and the Contest with Baal
Rejected alternatives: auf zwei Ästen hüpfen (a fresh, more literal but non-idiomatic retranslation — rejected)
Original: פֹּסְחִים עַל־שְׁתֵּי הַסְּעִפִּים
Category: Elijah/Baal
NEW. Elijah’s idiom for Israel’s religious double-mindedness (18:21), lit. ‘hopping/limping between two forks/branches.’ Match the established, famous Luther-tradition rendering exactly; this phrase carries its own independent life in German devotional and homiletic tradition and should not be retranslated freshly.
Still Small Voice
Approved rendering: ein stilles, sanftes Sausen
Transliteration: ein stilles, sanftes Sausen
Doctrine: Elijah’s Theophany at Horeb
Rejected alternatives: eine leise, dünne Stimme (a more literal but non-idiomatic retranslation — rejected)
Original: קוֹל דְּמָמָה דַקָּה
Category: Elijah/Baal
NEW. God’s self-revelation to Elijah at Horeb in a quiet whisper (qol demamah daqqah), contrasted with wind, earthquake, and fire (19:11-12). Match the established, celebrated Luther-tradition rendering exactly; this phrase carries independent devotional-literary life in German outside strictly biblical contexts. Teaching material should note this complicates, not contradicts, the fire-theophany of 18:38.
Medium Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Gott
Transliteration: Gott
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: אֱלֹהִים
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). Sharp religious-literacy divide between former West and East Germany (the latter shaped by decades of state-atheist policy) means ‘Gott’ is increasingly encountered as cultural-historical vocabulary rather than a live claim for a large and growing ‘konfessionslos’ population. 1 Kings extension: the same root (Elohim) also underlies the technical idolatry phrase ‘andere Götter’ (other gods) — same lexical root, opposite referent; keep this collision explicit in teaching material rather than letting the two uses blur.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Messias
Transliteration: Messias
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: מָשִׁיחַ
Category: Prophecy
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). 1 Kings extension: the title itself never occurs in this book, but its etymological root (mashach, ‘to anoint’) is used repeatedly of Solomon (1:39), Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha (19:15-16); flag this forward-teaching link explicitly wherever ‘anoint’ (see anoint) occurs.
Covenant
Approved rendering: Bund
Transliteration: Bund
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: בְּרִית
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). 1 Kings extension: also used once in a purely secular political-treaty sense (5:12, Solomon/Hiram) alongside its theological senses (8:23; 9:1-9); flag the secular use explicitly so no theological weight is imported into the Hiram treaty.
Sin
Approved rendering: Sünde
Transliteration: Sünde
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: חָטָא
Category: Idolatry
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). Grounds the covenant-curse logic of 8:33-50 and 9:6-9. 1 Kings 8:46 (‘there is no one who does not sin’) is a striking Old Testament forerunner text for Romans 3:23; flag this cross-reference explicitly in teaching material. Watch for the same colloquial-trivialization risk the baseline documents.
Holy
Approved rendering: heilig
Transliteration: heilig
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: rein
Original: קֹדֶש
Category: Temple
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). 1 Kings extends this root architecturally (see most_holy_place, High risk) and corporately (see separated_set_apart, High risk) — these two extensions are recorded as separate, escalated new entries rather than altering this inherited baseline entry’s own risk tier.
Glory
Approved rendering: Herrlichkeit
Transliteration: Herrlichkeit
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: כָּבוֹד
Category: Temple
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). 1 Kings extends this term to a visible, spatially localized cloud-theophany sense (8:10-11) that escalates to High risk; recorded as a separate new entry, glory_theophany, rather than altering this baseline entry’s tier, since the baseline’s relational/devotional NT sense remains valid and unchanged for other contexts.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Reich Gottes
Transliteration: Reich Gottes
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: (no exact Hebrew equivalent in this book; referenced only by contrast)
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). Not itself a term occurring in 1 Kings’ Hebrew text, but essential to keep segregated from this book’s new political-kingdom term, kingdom_political (‘Königreich’). Never use ‘Reich Gottes’ for the divided, dynastic, political kingdom of Israel/Judah, even loosely or homiletically.
Israel
Approved rendering: Israel
Transliteration: Israel
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). 1 Kings adds a book-specific disambiguation risk absent from the NT baseline: from chapter 12 onward, ‘Israel’ names both the whole covenant people AND, specifically, only the northern kingdom (as distinct from Judah). Teaching material must specify which sense is active at each occurrence.
Adversary Satan
Approved rendering: Widersacher
Transliteration: Widersacher
Doctrine: The Divided Kingdom and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: Satan (capitalized, imports the later personified NT figure anachronistically)
Original: שָׂטָן
Category: God
NEW. Common noun ‘adversary, opponent’ (Hebrew satan), here denoting human political adversaries (Hadad, Rezon) God raises up as covenant-curse instruments (1 Kings 11:14, 23) — NOT yet the later personified cosmic figure. Render lowercase ‘Widersacher,’ never capitalized or treated as a proper name; a translator’s note distinguishing the two is required.
Throne
Approved rendering: Thron
Transliteration: Thron
Doctrine: The Conditional Davidic Covenant
Original: כִּסֵּא
Category: Covenant
NEW. The seat of royal authority, especially the Davidic throne over Israel, made explicitly conditional on covenant fidelity (1 Kings 2:4; 8:25; 9:5: ‘if only your sons pay close attention to their way’). No lexical false-friend risk; the translation risk is doctrinal — never smooth the conditional clauses into an unconditional guarantee.
House Temple
Approved rendering: Haus / Tempel
Transliteration: Haus / Tempel
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: בַּיִת
Category: Temple
NEW. The generic term for the temple building (bayit) throughout chapters 5-9; also used elsewhere in the OT for ‘dynasty’ (house of David) — not that sense here. Render ‘Haus’ generically or ‘Tempel’ when the specific building is meant; mainly a register-consistency issue across chapters 5-8.
Temple Structure
Approved rendering: Tempel
Transliteration: Tempel
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: הֵיכָל
Category: Temple
NEW. The main built structure of the temple (hekal), distinct from the inner sanctuary (devir) and the Most Holy Place. Low false-friend risk; keep terminologically distinct from das Allerheiligste (see most_holy_place) in teaching material describing the temple’s internal architecture.
Ark Of Covenant
Approved rendering: die Bundeslade
Transliteration: die Bundeslade
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: אֲרוֹן הַבְּרִית
Category: Temple
NEW. The sacred chest housing the tablets of the law, installed in the Most Holy Place (8:1, 6, 21). Reuses the baseline’s ‘Bund’ exactly within a compound. This is the immediate object around which the glory-cloud theophany of 8:10-11 occurs — see glory_theophany.
Cloud Theophany
Approved rendering: Wolke
Transliteration: Wolke
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: עָנָן
Category: Temple
NEW. The visible cloud (anan) that is the physical sign of the kavod (glory) filling the temple (8:10-11). Low lexical risk on its own; doctrinal significance lies in its pairing with Herrlichkeit as the immediate narrative occasion prompting Solomon’s dedication prayer.
Forgive
Approved rendering: vergeben
Transliteration: vergeben
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: סָלַח
Category: Temple
NEW. A technical term for divine forgiveness of sin (salach), used exclusively with God as subject, structuring the recurring ‘hear… and forgive’ refrain of Solomon’s prayer (8:30 and throughout). Matches the baseline’s rendering pattern for the parallel NT authority_to_forgive_sins doctrine (Matthew 9:2), giving this OT prayer a direct forward link into already-governed Gospel material.
Fear Of God
Approved rendering: fürchten
Transliteration: fürchten
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: יָרֵא
Category: Temple
NEW. Reverential covenant awe and submission (yare), ranging semantically from raw terror to loyal reverence; here the latter (8:40, 43). German ‘fürchten’ carries a stronger dread connotation than intended; teaching material must clarify this is reverent submission, not terror.
Prayer And Plea Formula
Approved rendering: Gebet und Bitte / Flehen
Transliteration: Gebet und Bitte / Flehen
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: הַתְּפִלָּה וְהַתְּחִנָּה
Category: Temple
NEW. The fixed pairing ‘prayer and plea/supplication’ (hattefillah vehattechinnah) structuring the recurring refrain of Solomon’s dedication prayer (8:28, 30, 38, 45, 49). Render consistently at each occurrence; functions as a deliberate structural refrain.
Gods Dwelling Place Heaven
Approved rendering: die Stätte, da du wohnst
Transliteration: die Stätte, da du wohnst
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: מְכוֹן שִׁבְתֶּךָ
Category: Temple
NEW. ‘The place/foundation of your sitting’ (mekhon shivtekha), referring to heaven, not the temple — Solomon locates God’s ultimate dwelling in heaven even while praying toward the earthly house. Recurs seven times (8:30, 32, 34, 36, 39, 43, 45, 49) as a structural refrain; render identically at every occurrence to avoid confusion with the temple building itself.
Hearing Heart
Approved rendering: ein hörendes Herz
Transliteration: ein hörendes Herz
Doctrine: The Gift of Wisdom and the Heart
Rejected alternatives: ein verständiges Herz (flattens the literal ‘hearing’ image and its Shema-echo)
Original: לֵב שֹׁמֵעַ
Category: Wisdom
NEW. Literally ‘a hearing/listening heart’ (lev shome’a, 3:9) — Solomon’s own request, for a heart able to hear and discern rather than merely be clever. Preserve the literal ‘hearing’ image to retain the connection to Shema vocabulary underlying covenant obedience.
Prophetic Sign Act
Approved rendering: prophetische Zeichenhandlung
Transliteration: prophetische Zeichenhandlung
Doctrine: Prophetic Sign-Acts and Word Fulfillment
Original: (category term, e.g. 11:29–31’s torn garment, 13:3–5’s split altar)
Category: Prophecy
NEW. A category term (not a single fixed Hebrew word) for a physical action embodying and enacting the prophetic word (e.g. 11:29-31’s torn garment, 13:3-5’s split altar). Name the category explicitly in teaching material so its recurrence across many narrative units (chs. 11, 13, 20-22) is recognized as a deliberate literary pattern.
Anoint
Approved rendering: salben
Transliteration: salben
Doctrine: Anointing and the Messianic Trajectory
Original: מָשַׁח
Category: Prophecy
NEW. Ritual consecration by oil (mashach) of kings (Solomon, 1:39; Hazael and Jehu, 19:15-16) and prophetic succession (Elisha, 19:16). Etymological root of the baseline’s already-governed messiah/Messias; flag the forward link explicitly in teaching material.
Man Of God
Approved rendering: Mann Gottes
Transliteration: Mann Gottes
Doctrine: Prophetic Confrontation of Kings
Original: אִיש הָאֱלֹהִים
Category: Prophecy
NEW. A technical designation for a divinely-authorized prophetic figure (ish ha’elohim, 13:1 and throughout), largely synonymous with navi/Prophet but emphasizing divine authorization over speaking office. Low collision risk; note the near-synonymy for teaching consistency.
Shema Totality Formula
Approved rendering: mit ganzem Herzen und ganzer Seele
Transliteration: mit ganzem Herzen und ganzer Seele
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: בְּכָל־לְבָבָם וּבְכָל־נַפְשָׁם
Category: Covenant
NEW. The Shema-echoing totality formula (bekhol-levavam uvkhol-nafsham, 8:48; cf. Deuteronomy 6:5), describing wholehearted covenant return. Render consistently at every occurrence within the prayer.
Inheritance
Approved rendering: Erbe / Erbteil
Transliteration: Erbe / Erbteil
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: נַחֲלָה
Category: Covenant
NEW. Israel’s concrete, allotted territorial land-inheritance (nachalah, 8:36, 51). Must be kept distinct in register from the NT’s spiritualized inheritance-in-Christ vocabulary already governed by the baseline (e.g. Ephesians 1:14’s Unterpfand, Romans 8’s Kindschaft) — this is Israel’s literal land-promise, though the continuity is real and worth surfacing in teaching notes.
Low Risk Terms
Prophet
Approved rendering: Prophet
Transliteration: Prophet
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Original: נָבִיא
Category: Prophecy
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). 1 Kings extension: escalate awareness (not the baseline risk tier of the bare noun itself) because this book applies the identical title to both true prophets (Ahijah, Elijah, Micaiah) and false, Baal-serving or court-sanctioned prophets (18:19; 22:6) — see false_prophets. The bare title never guarantees legitimacy in this book.
Prophecy
Approved rendering: Weissagung
Transliteration: Weissagung
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: נְבוּאָה
Category: Prophecy
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). Applies directly to the book’s many fulfilled-word episodes (e.g. the fulfilled dynastic promise recalled in 8:24; Ahijah’s oracle fulfilled in ch. 14-15).
David
Approved rendering: David
Transliteration: David
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: דָּוִד
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (unchanged). The dynastic promise to David (2:4; 8:25; 9:4-9) is the book’s structural backbone, made explicitly conditional — see throne and law_of_moses_standard.
King
Approved rendering: König
Transliteration: König
Doctrine: Solomon’s Administration and Covenant Blessing
Original: מֶלֶךְ
Category: Covenant
NEW. The book’s dominant political-theological office-term, evaluated throughout by covenant fidelity via the regnal_evaluation_formula. No lexical risk in isolation; doctrinal weight lies in the recurring evaluation formula, not in this term itself.
Cherubim
Approved rendering: Cherubim
Transliteration: Cherubim
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: כְּרוּבִים
Category: Temple
NEW. Winged guardian figures flanking the ark (6:23-28). Transliterate, standard across all German Bible traditions, matching Luther. No significant risk.
Jachin And Boaz
Approved rendering: Jachin und Boas
Transliteration: Jachin und Boas
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: יָכִין וּבֹעַז
Category: Temple
NEW. The two named bronze pillars at the temple porch (7:21), whose names mean ‘he establishes’ and ‘in him is strength.’ Retain transliterated names with a translator’s gloss on their theological meaning for teaching material; no German-specific collision risk.
The Sea Bronze Basin
Approved rendering: das eherne Meer
Transliteration: das eherne Meer
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: הַיָּם
Category: Temple
NEW. The large bronze basin for priestly washing (7:23-26), echoing cosmic/creation imagery of the primeval sea subdued and put to ordered temple use. No significant risk.
Iron Furnace
Approved rendering: eiserner Schmelzofen
Transliteration: eiserner Schmelzofen
Doctrine: The Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People
Original: כּוּר הַבַּרְזֶל
Category: Temple
NEW. A fixed idiom (kur habarzel) for the intensity of Egyptian slavery (8:51). Render concretely rather than abstracting to generic ‘affliction.‘
Sons Of The Prophets
Approved rendering: Prophetenjünger
Transliteration: Prophetenjünger
Doctrine: Prophetic Confrontation of Kings
Rejected alternatives: Prophetensöhne (acceptable alternative, less idiomatic)
Original: בְּנֵי הַנְּבִיאִים
Category: Prophecy
NEW. A technical term (benei hannevi’im) for organized prophetic guilds/communities, distinct from individual prophets like Elijah (20:35). Useful institutional-background term; should not be confused with a literal biological description.
Vineyard
Approved rendering: Weinberg
Transliteration: Weinberg
Doctrine: Prophetic Confrontation of Kings
Original: כֶּרֶם
Category: Prophetic Confrontation
NEW. Naboth’s concrete, everyday property (kerem), the object of Ahab and Jezebel’s judicial murder and the occasion for Elijah’s confrontation of the king (ch. 21). No significant risk; doctrinally central to widening the Prophetic Confrontation doctrine beyond cultic idolatry to social injustice.
Moses
Approved rendering: Mose
Transliteration: Mose
Doctrine: Prophetic Confrontation of Kings
Original: מֹשֶׁה
Category: Prophecy
NEW to this book’s translation memory (not previously seeded in the Romans baseline TM, though the German form is stable across all traditions). God’s servant and prototypical prophetic mediator, invoked as the source of the covenant word Solomon’s prayer recalls (8:53, 56). Reinforces the prophetic-mediation pattern structuring Prophetic Confrontation of Kings throughout the rest of the book.
Elijah
Approved rendering: Elia
Transliteration: Elia
Doctrine: Elijah and the Contest with Baal
NEW. Standard German Bible form of Eliyyahu (‘My God is YHWH’ / ‘YHWH is my God’). The name’s meaning is itself a theological confession directly anticipating the Carmel confession (18:39); worth surfacing in teaching material as a forward link.
Solomon
Approved rendering: Salomo
Transliteration: Salomo
Doctrine: Solomon’s Wisdom and Its Limits
NEW. Standard German Bible form. Stable proper name across all German traditions; no lexical risk. The doctrinal weight attaches to accompanying vocabulary (Weisheit, ein hörendes Herz, andere Götter), not to the name itself.
Jerusalem
Approved rendering: Jerusalem
Transliteration: Jerusalem
Doctrine: The Corporate Election of Jerusalem
NEW. Standard German Bible form. Stable proper name; theological weight attaches to the accompanying Erwählung vocabulary (8:44; 11:13, 32, 36) applying the baseline’s High-risk election term to this city’s corporate/geographic election, not to the place name itself.
Jezebel
Approved rendering: Isebel
Transliteration: Isebel
Doctrine: Idolatry and Its Consequences
Rejected alternatives: Jezebel (English-influenced spelling, non-standard in German Bible tradition)
NEW. Standard German Bible form (Izevel), differing slightly in vocalization from the familiar English ‘Jezebel’ — both ultimately transliterate the same Hebrew name. Use ‘Isebel’ consistently for German-language teaching material; transliteration-consistency note only, no doctrinal risk in the name itself.
