Core Glossary
08 Core Glossary — Haggai
This glossary compiles every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, across both chapters of Haggai (1:1-15; 2:1-9; 2:10-19; 2:20-23). Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans-curriculum translation_memory.json are marked [BASELINE REUSE] and MUST use the exact recorded German rendering per the hard rule of this pipeline. Terms new to this curriculum are marked [NEW] and are proposed here for addition to translation memory, with risk tier assigned using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as doctrine_risk_registry.json.
| # | English Term | Hebrew Original | Transliteration | German Rendering | Status | Risk Tier | Doctrine | Passages | Rendering Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | word of the LORD | דְּבַר־יְהוָה | devar-YHWH | das Wort des HERRN | NEW | Medium | Inspiration/Authority of Prophecy | 1:1, 1:3, 2:1, 2:10, 2:20 | Authoritative, event-causing divine speech; not generic “a message.” Structures the whole book’s four-oracle framework. |
| 2 | Haggai | חַגַּי | Ḥaggay | Haggai | NEW | Low | N/A (proper name) | throughout | Stable proper name; “festal one.” |
| 3 | prophet | נָבִיא | navi | Prophet | [BASELINE REUSE] | Low | Inspiration of Scripture | 1:1, 1:3, 1:12, 2:1, 2:10 | Reuses Romans TM exactly (“Prophet,” Low risk). |
| 4 | Zerubbabel | זְרֻבָּבֶל | Zerubbavel | Serubbabel | NEW | Medium | Davidic Covenant / Messianic Promise | 1:1, 1:12, 1:14, 2:2, 2:4, 2:21, 2:23 | Use established German Bible spelling “Serubbabel” (initial S, not Z); carries latent Davidic significance, activated at 2:23. |
| 5 | governor | פֶּחָה | pechah | Statthalter | NEW | Medium | Divine Calling (secular office) | 1:1, 1:14, 2:2, 2:21 | Subordinate Persian-imperial administrative title; do not import royal coloring prematurely. |
| 6 | high priest | הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֹל | hakohen hagadol | Hoherpriester | NEW | High | Priestly Mediation | 1:1, 1:12, 1:14, 2:2, 2:4 | Name Yehoshua/Joshua shares its root with “Jesus” (Ἰησοῦς) — flag etymological note without collapsing historical distinction; typological background only. |
| 7 | LORD of hosts | יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת | YHWH Tseva’ot | HERR der Heerscharen | NEW | Critical | Sovereignty of God | throughout (14x) | Germany-specific: “Heerscharen” (armies/hosts) risks militaristic/martial association given 20th-century history. Mandatory theologian-authored framing note on cosmic sovereignty, not human warfare, required on first occurrence per lesson unit. |
| 8 | house of the LORD / temple | בֵּית יְהוָה | beit YHWH | Haus des HERRN / Tempel | NEW | Critical | God’s House versus Self-Interest | 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:9, 1:14, 2:3, 2:7, 2:9, 2:15, 2:18 | Must NOT use “Gemeinde” (reserved by baseline TM for NT ekklesia/body-of-Christ sense). Literal Second Temple building. High proof-texting risk (building-fundraising misapplication); requires typological NT-fulfillment framing (John 2:19-21; 1 Cor 3:16). |
| 9 | time / season | עֵת | et | Zeit | NEW | Medium | Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest | 1:2, 1:4 | Preserve rhetorical irony of the people’s self-serving timing claim. |
| 10 | paneled houses | בָּתֵּיכֶם סְפוּנִים | bateikhem sefunim | getäfelte Häuser | NEW | Medium | God’s House versus Self-Interest | 1:4 | Deliberate echo of Solomon’s temple/palace paneling vocabulary (1 Kings 6:9, 7:3); avoid vague “prächtige Häuser,” which loses the allusion. |
| 11 | ruined / desolate | חָרֵב | charev | verwüstet / wüst | NEW | Medium | God’s House versus Self-Interest | 1:4, 1:9, 2:3 | Sets up wordplay with drought (חֹרֶב) in 1:11; keep consistent root (“wüst/verwüstet”) to preserve audibility of the pun’s logic even where the pun itself cannot transfer. |
| 12 | consider your ways | שִׂימוּ לְבַבְכֶם עַל־דַּרְכֵיכֶם | simu levavkhem al-darkheikhem | Richtet euer Herz auf eure Wege / Nehmt euch zu Herzen, wie es euch geht | NEW | Medium | Obedience and Blessing | 1:5, 1:7 | Verbatim refrain in Hebrew; fix ONE consistent German rendering for both occurrences. |
| 13 | sown much, harvested little | זְרַעְתֶּם הַרְבֵּה וְהָבֵא מְעָט | zera’tem harbeh vehave me’at | ihr habt viel gesät und wenig eingebracht | NEW | High | Obedience and Blessing | 1:6 | Deliberate Deuteronomic covenant-curse echo (Deut 28:38-40); preserve recognizable covenant-curse register, not generic “hard times” paraphrase. |
| 14 | bag/purse with holes | צְלוּחִית נְקוּבָה | tzelochit nekuvah | ein durchlöcherter Geldbeutel | NEW | Low-Medium | Obedience and Blessing | 1:6 | Vivid concrete folk-idiom; do not abstract into “vergebliche Mühe.” |
| 15 | I will take pleasure in it | וְאֶרְצֶה־בּוֹ | ve’ertzeh-bo | ich werde es wohlgefällig annehmen | NEW | Medium | God’s House versus Self-Interest | 1:8 | Sacrificial-acceptance register (cf. Leviticus 1:4); ties obedience to renewed divine favor. |
| 16 | glory / I will be glorified | כָּבוֹד / וְאֶכָּבֵד | kavod / ve’ekkaved | Herrlichkeit / ich werde verherrlicht werden | [BASELINE REUSE — root] | Critical | The Coming Glory of the Temple | 1:8, 2:3, 2:7, 2:9 | MUST share root with baseline TM’s “glory” → “Herrlichkeit” to preserve lexical continuity from OT temple-glory to NT Christ-glory (John 1:14, etc.). |
| 17 | I blew it away | וְנָפַחְתִּי בוֹ | venafachti vo | ich blies es fort / ich zerstreute es | NEW | Medium | Obedience and Blessing (curse side) | 1:9 | God’s active, personal intervention scattering harvest — not passive misfortune. |
| 18 | running each to his own house | אַתֶּם רָצִים אִישׁ לְבֵיתוֹ | atem ratzim ish leveito | während ihr, jeder zu seinem eigenen Haus, lauft | NEW | High | God’s House versus Self-Interest (core rhetorical device) | 1:9 | Threefold “Haus” repetition in the verse is the book’s key rhetorical device; must remain audible in German, not paraphrased away. |
| 19 | the heavens have withheld the dew | שָׁמַיִם מִטָּל … כָּלְאוּ | shamayim mital … kal’u | der Himmel hat den Tau zurückgehalten | NEW | Medium-High | Obedience and Blessing (curse side) | 1:10 | Covenant-curse causation (Deut 11:17); teaching material must make the covenantal-causal claim explicit for scientific-naturalist-shaped readers. |
| 20 | drought | חֹרֶב | choreb | Dürre / Trockenheit | NEW | High | God’s House versus Self-Interest | 1:11 | Untranslatable Hebrew wordplay with חָרֵב (“ruined,” #11); flag translator’s note on the lost pun, per this curriculum’s transparency discipline for untranslatable source features. |
| 21 | labor of the hands | יְגִיעַ כַּפָּיִם | yegia kapayim | die Arbeit ihrer Hände | NEW | Low-Medium | Obedience and Blessing | 1:11 | Climactic list-final summary category; totality of human effort placed under covenant claim. |
| 22 | remnant of the people | שְׁאֵרִית הָעָם | she’erit ha’am | der Überrest des Volkes | NEW | High | Covenant Continuity | 1:12, 1:14, 2:2 | Technical post-exilic theological term for the surviving covenant community; flag for future cross-reference to Romans 9:27’s own remnant citation if this pipeline expands. |
| 23 | fear (of the LORD) | יִרְאָה | yir’ah | Gottesfurcht | NEW | Medium | Obedience and Blessing | 1:12 | Prefer “Gottesfurcht” over bare “Furcht” to disambiguate toward reverential awe, not raw terror or mere transactional compliance. |
| 24 | the LORD stirred up the spirit | וַיָּעַר יְהוָה אֶת־רוּחַ | vaya’ar YHWH et-ruach | der HERR erweckte den Geist / die Bereitschaft | NEW | Critical | The Presence and Spirit of God with His People | 1:14 | MUST be distinguished from baseline TM’s “Heiliger Geist” (third Person of the Trinity) — this denotes human spirit/motivation divinely energized. Mandatory theologian’s note distinguishing while also legitimately foreshadowing NT pneumatology. |
| 25 | I am with you | אֲנִי אִתְּכֶם | ani ittekhem | Ich bin mit euch, spricht der HERR | NEW | Critical | The Presence and Spirit of God with His People | 1:13, 2:4 | Render identically at both occurrences. Direct trajectory to Matthew 1:23’s “Immanuel” (already fixed in baseline Matthew package) and Matthew 28:20; mandatory cross-reference in teaching material. |
| 26 | be strong | חִזְקוּ | chizku | Sei stark! / Seid stark! | NEW | Medium | The Presence and Spirit of God with His People | 2:4 | Echoes Joshua 1:6-9 commissioning language; triple repetition (leaders + people) emphasizes shared responsibility. |
| 27 | shake the heavens and the earth | מַרְעִישׁ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת־הָאָרֶץ | mar’ish et-hashamayim ve’et-ha’aretz | Ich werde Himmel und Erde erschüttern | NEW | High | The Coming Glory of the Temple | 2:6, 2:21 | Cosmic-eschatological register; directly cited in Hebrews 12:26-27 — flag cross-reference even without full Hebrews coverage in this curriculum. |
| 28 | the desire / treasures of all nations | חֶמְדַּת כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם | chemdat kol-hagoyim | die Schätze aller Völker | NEW | Critical | The Coming Glory of the Temple | 2:7 | THE single most contested term in the book. Grammatically ambiguous (singular noun, plural verb). German liturgical-historical fault line: older Luther-tradition/devotional messianic-Advent reading (“Tröster/Bestes aller Heiden”) vs. modern critical material reading (“Schätze aller Völker,” preferred by Luther 2017/Einheitsübersetzung). Mandatory theologian review noting BOTH readings; do not silently adjudicate. |
| 29 | peace | שָׁלוֹם | shalom | Friede | [BASELINE REUSE] | Medium | The Coming Glory of the Temple | 2:9 | Reuses Romans TM exactly (“Friede,” Low risk there). Note textual-critical question re: verse inclusion in some manuscript traditions; flag transparently. |
| 30 | holy / consecrated | קֹדֶשׁ | qodesh | heilig / heiliges Fleisch | [BASELINE REUSE — root] | Medium | Obedience and Blessing (ritual-purity illustration) | 2:12 | Shares root with baseline TM’s “heilig” (Medium risk in Romans); here narrowly cultic-ritual (Levitical contagion law) — distinguish register in teaching material without changing the German word. |
| 31 | unclean / defiled | טָמֵא | tamé | unrein | NEW | High | Obedience and Blessing | 2:13-14 | Illustration functions as analogy for corporate spiritual contamination from unaddressed priority-disorder; guard against a purely ritual-legal reading disconnected from the doctrine of God’s House versus Self-Interest. |
| 32 | from this day I will bless | מִן־הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה אֲבָרֵךְ | min-hayom hazeh avarekh | von diesem Tag an werde ich euch segnen | NEW | Critical | Obedience and Blessing | 2:19 | Propositional center of the “Obedience and Blessing” doctrine; recommend adding “bless” → “segnen” as a new Critical-risk TM entry. Guard against prosperity-gospel misreading detached from the specific covenant-temple-priority context. |
| 33 | kingdoms of the nations / throne of kingdoms | מַמְלְכוֹת הַגּוֹיִם / כִּסֵּא מַמְלָכוֹת | mamlekhot hagoyim | die Königreiche der Völker | NEW | High | The Coming Glory of the Temple (eschatological horizon) | 2:22 | Must NOT be confused with, or rendered using, baseline TM’s “Reich Gottes” (opposite referent: human/Gentile kingdoms under judgment, not God’s own kingdom). |
| 34 | I have chosen you | בְּחַרְתִּיךָ | bacharticha | ich habe dich erwählt | [BASELINE REUSE — root] | High | Davidic Covenant / Messianic Promise | 2:23 | Shares root with baseline TM’s “Erwählung” (High risk in Romans, election-to-salvation sense). Here: specific historical-individual election to a Davidic-messianic-adjacent role — related but not identical sense; distinguish explicitly in teaching material. |
| 35 | signet ring | חוֹתָם | chotam | Siegelring | NEW | Critical | Davidic Covenant / Messianic Promise | 2:23 | Deliberate reversal of Jeremiah 22:24’s judgment removing the signet from Jehoiachin (Zerubbabel’s grandfather); ties to Matthew 1:12’s genealogy. Mandatory theologian review for messianic-typological framing. |
Doctrine-to-Term Cross-Reference
| Curriculum Doctrine | Primary Terms (by # above) |
|---|---|
| Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest | 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 |
| Obedience and Blessing | 12, 13, 14, 22, 23, 30, 31, 32 |
| The Presence and Spirit of God with His People | 24, 25, 26 |
| The Coming Glory of the Temple | 6, 16, 27, 28, 29, 33, 34, 35 |
Risk Summary
| Risk Tier | Count | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 9 (#7, 8, 16, 18*, 24, 25, 28, 32, 35) | Human theologian, mandatory |
| High | 8 (#6, 13, 20, 22, 27, 31, 33, 34) | Human theologian |
| Medium / Medium-High | 15 | Native speaker review |
| Low / Low-Medium | 3 | Automated review |
*Note: #18 (“running each to his own house”) is assessed High for rhetorical-structural reasons (the book’s key wordplay device) even though it lacks the doctrinal weight of the Critical-tier terms; theologian input is still recommended to confirm the threefold “Haus” repetition survives in the final German rendering.
This glossary extends, and must be read alongside, the baseline translation_memory.json (version 9) and bible_term_registry.json. All baseline-reuse terms above are locked to their existing German renderings. All NEW terms proposed above require formal addition to translation memory (with version increment) before Phase 2 segment translation begins, per the pipeline’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.
Critical Risk Terms
Lord
Approved rendering: Herr
Transliteration: Herr
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Meister, Chef
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] Romans 10:9 ‘Jesus ist Herr’; no separate everyday honorific protects the exalted sense in German. HAGGAI EXTENSION: in Haggai the divine name YHWH is rendered ‘der HERR’ (small capitals per standing German Bible convention), NOT the NT Lordship-of-Christ confession this baseline entry names. Do not conflate the two referents in teaching material; both use the same German word by long-standing convention but name a different theological claim (YHWH’s OT covenant name versus the NT confession of Jesus’ lordship). This distinction underlies the new Critical-risk entries ‘lord_of_hosts’ and ‘i_am_with_you’ below.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Heiliger Geist
Transliteration: Heiliger Geist
Doctrine: Sanctification
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] The personal third Person of the Trinity; no competing deity-concept risk in German culture. HAGGAI EXTENSION — MANDATORY FENCE: this term must NEVER be used to render Haggai 1:14’s ‘ruach’ (the human spirit/motivation the LORD stirs up in the leaders and people). Doing so would anachronistically import full NT Trinitarian pneumatology into a pre-Pentecost OT text. See the new Critical-risk entry ‘lord_stirred_up_the_spirit’ below for the required alternative rendering and mandatory theologian’s note.
Immanuel
Approved rendering: Immanuel, das ist verdolmetscht: Gott mit uns
Transliteration: Immanuel, das ist verdolmetscht: Gott mit uns
Doctrine: The Virgin Birth and Incarnation
[INHERITED FROM MATTHEW PACKAGE within the cumulative baseline, copied exactly, unchanged] Matthew 1:23. HAGGAI EXTENSION — MANDATORY CROSS-REFERENCE: Haggai’s own covenant presence-formula ‘Ich bin mit euch, spricht der HERR’ (1:13; 2:4) forms a direct theological trajectory toward this fixed Matthew entry and toward Matthew 28:20. Teaching material for the doctrine ‘The Presence and Spirit of God with His People’ must draw this connection explicitly rather than leaving Haggai’s promise as an isolated ancient reassurance.
Lord Of Hosts
Approved rendering: HERR der Heerscharen
Transliteration: YHWH Tseva’ot
Doctrine: The Sovereignty of God as LORD of Hosts
Rejected alternatives: HERR der Heere, der allmächtige Gott (loses the specific title’s force)
Original: יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת
Category: God
CRITICAL, Germany-specific. Occurs 14 times across Haggai’s two short chapters. ‘Heerscharen’ (armies/hosts) risks evoking militaristic or quasi-nationalist-martial associations given Germany’s 20th-century history with state militarism — a genuinely new German-specific sensitivity, structurally comparable to (but distinct from) the baseline package’s documented caution around ‘Heil.’ ‘HERR der Heerscharen’ is retained (matching Luther and liturgical familiarity) but requires a MANDATORY theologian-authored framing note on first occurrence per teaching unit, clarifying the title denotes cosmic sovereignty and covenant-keeping power over all created powers, never a call to human warfare.
House Of The Lord
Approved rendering: Haus des HERRN
Transliteration: beit YHWH
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Rejected alternatives: Gemeinde (reserved by baseline for NT ekklesia sense), Kirche (institution-default, anachronistic for the literal Second Temple)
Original: בֵּית יְהוָה
Category: Temple
CRITICAL, two converging German-specific risks. (1) Must NOT default to ‘Gemeinde,’ reserved by the baseline for the NT ekklesia/body-of-Christ sense — this names the literal, concrete, then-unfinished Second Temple building. Where the building itself is meant, ‘Tempel’ is an acceptable variant. (2) This passage is a frequently proof-texted German-language ‘give money to build/renovate our church building’ sermon text in contemporary evangelicalism; curriculum material must supply explicit typological framing (John 2:19-21; 1 Corinthians 3:16) to prevent a flattened building-fundraising misapplication.
Glory Be Glorified
Approved rendering: Herrlichkeit / ich werde verherrlicht werden
Transliteration: kavod / ve’ekkaved
Doctrine: The Coming Glory of the Temple
Original: כָּבוֹד / וְאֶכָּבֵד
Category: God
CRITICAL, mandatory baseline-root reuse (see ‘glory’ above). God’s promise that obedient temple-building will occasion his own self-manifestation and honor (1:8), extended to the promise that the temple’s future glory will exceed even Solomon’s (2:9). MUST use the same German root as the baseline’s ‘Herrlichkeit’ to preserve lexical continuity from OT temple-glory through to John 1:14’s Christ-glory, already fixed in the baseline Gospels packages.
Lord Stirred Up The Spirit
Approved rendering: der HERR erweckte den Geist
Transliteration: vaya’ar YHWH et-ruach
Doctrine: The Presence and Spirit of God with His People
Rejected alternatives: der Heilige Geist erfüllte sie (anachronistic full-Trinitarian import forbidden)
Original: וַיָּעַר יְהוָה אֶת־רוּחַ
Category: Holy Spirit
CRITICAL. God’s activation of the leaders’ and people’s existing will/motivation toward covenant obedience — an energizing of human agency, not possession or replacement of personality, and NOT a terminological equivalent to the baseline’s ‘Heiliger Geist’ (the third Person of the Trinity). Rendering this with ‘der Heilige Geist’ would anachronistically import full NT pneumatology into a pre-Pentecost OT text. MANDATORY theologian’s note required distinguishing this from, while legitimately connecting it as foreshadowing, the NT doctrine of the Spirit’s presence with God’s people.
I Am With You
Approved rendering: Ich bin mit euch, spricht der HERR
Transliteration: ani ittekhem
Doctrine: The Presence and Spirit of God with His People
Rejected alternatives: any variant phrasing at the second occurrence (2:4) that deviates from the 1:13 wording
Original: אֲנִי אִתְּכֶם
Category: Presence of God
CRITICAL. The classic covenant presence-formula (cf. Genesis 26:24; Exodus 3:12; Joshua 1:5), spoken at the moment of the people’s obedience (1:13) and repeated at 2:4. MUST render identically at both occurrences. Directly cross-references the baseline’s fixed ‘immanuel’ entry (Matthew 1:23) and Matthew 28:20’s Great Commission promise — teaching material must make this OT-to-NT trajectory explicit.
Desire Of Nations
Approved rendering: die Schätze aller Völker
Transliteration: chemdat kol-hagoyim
Doctrine: The Coming Glory of the Temple
Rejected alternatives: der Trost/das Beste aller Heiden (older messianic-devotional reading — never silently substituted, only disclosed alongside)
Original: חֶמְדַּת כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם
Category: Messianic Promise
CRITICAL, single most contested term in the book. Genuinely ambiguous in the Hebrew itself (singular noun, plural verb). Germany-specific liturgical-historical fault line: older Luther-tradition/Advent-hymnic usage favors a messianic-personal reading; modern critical German translations (Luther 2017, Einheitsübersetzung) favor this material ‘treasures’ reading. ‘Die Schätze aller Völker’ is adopted as the primary rendering (grammatically responsible, matching modern scholarship), but EVERY occurrence requires a MANDATORY theologian’s note disclosing BOTH readings and their history — never silently adjudicated. Note also: ‘Völker,’ not ‘Heiden,’ is used here deliberately; see the inherited ‘gentiles’ entry above for why the two must not be confused.
From This Day I Will Bless
Approved rendering: von diesem Tag an werde ich euch segnen
Transliteration: min-hayom hazeh avarekh
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Original: מִן־הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה אֲבָרֵךְ
Category: Blessing
CRITICAL, new core doctrinal term with no exact baseline equivalent (the Romans TM does not fix ‘bless/Segen’ as a standalone entry). The propositional center of ‘Obedience and Blessing,’ dated to the exact day of the temple’s re-foundation, marking the decisive end of the chapter 1 covenant curse. Lexically straightforward; the risk is exclusively doctrinal-framing — German charismatic/prosperity-teaching contexts must be explicitly guarded against detaching this promised blessing from its specific covenant-temple-priority context and generalizing it into a financial-prosperity formula.
Signet Ring
Approved rendering: Siegelring
Transliteration: chotam
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope
Original: חוֹתָם
Category: Davidic Covenant
CRITICAL, messianic-typological weight. A king’s personal seal used to authenticate royal decrees, promised to Zerubbabel (2:23) as a deliberate reversal of Jeremiah 22:24’s judgment removing the signet ring from Zerubbabel’s grandfather, King Jehoiachin. ‘Siegelring’ is the precise lexical equivalent, so the risk is entirely doctrinal-framing: teaching material MUST supply the Jeremiah 22:24 intertextual reversal and the Matthew 1:12 genealogical connection explicitly, since neither is recoverable from the German word alone. This is the book’s clearest messianic-Davidic-covenant capstone and requires mandatory theologian review.
High Risk Terms
Election
Approved rendering: Erwählung
Transliteration: Erwählung
Doctrine: Election
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] German Reformed (Calvinist) tradition has historically debated double predestination more directly than Lutherans; translators must not impose either tradition’s precise systematic doctrine onto a curriculum serving both audiences. HAGGAI EXTENSION: the same root is reused for Zerubbabel’s specific historical-individual, Davidic-messianic-adjacent election in Haggai 2:23. See the new High-risk entry ‘i_have_chosen_you’ below, which requires an explicit teaching note distinguishing this OT political-covenant election from the NT soteriological election-to-salvation sense this baseline entry primarily addresses.
Church
Approved rendering: Gemeinde
Transliteration: Gemeinde
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: Kirche (institution-default)
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] Preferred for the NT ekklesia/body-of-Christ sense over institution-default ‘Kirche.’ HAGGAI EXTENSION — MANDATORY FENCE: this term must NEVER be used to render Haggai’s ‘house of the LORD’ (bet YHWH), which names the literal, concrete, then-unfinished architectural Second Temple, not the gathered NT covenant community. See the new Critical-risk entry ‘house_of_the_lord’ below.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: Heiden
Transliteration: Heiden
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] Traditional Lutheran rendering carries a pejorative ‘uncivilized pagan’ connotation in modern German; the ‘Juden und Heiden’ pairing requires deliberate historically sensitive handling given Germany’s history. HAGGAI EXTENSION: Haggai 2:7’s ‘goyim’ (‘nations’) in ‘the treasures of all nations’ is deliberately rendered ‘Völker,’ NOT ‘Heiden,’ in the new entry ‘desire_of_nations’ below, since the context is nations-in-general flowing tribute to Jerusalem, not the Jew/Gentile theological pairing this baseline entry’s sensitivity note addresses. Reviewers must not conflate the two distinct German words or their distinct sensitivities.
High Priest
Approved rendering: Hoherpriester
Transliteration: hakohen hagadol
Doctrine: Priestly and Civil Leadership under God’s Word
Original: הַכֹּהֵן הַגָּדוֹל
Category: Priesthood
NEW. HIGH RISK, German-specific: the high priest’s given name (Yehoshua/Joshua, rendered in German as ‘Joschua’) shares its Hebrew root with ‘Jesus’ (Ἰησοῦς, both meaning ‘YHWH saves’). German Bibles rightly distinguish ‘Joschua’ (this OT figure) from ‘Jesus’ (the NT Savior); curriculum material must present this etymological link strictly as typological background, never as a direct christological identity claim. ‘Hoherpriester’ is introduced fresh here, not present in the baseline Romans package.
Sown Much Harvested Little
Approved rendering: ihr habt viel gesät und wenig eingebracht
Transliteration: zera’tem harbeh vehave me’at
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Rejected alternatives: ihr habt harte Zeiten erlebt (generic paraphrase, severs the covenant-curse echo)
Original: זְרַעְתֶּם הַרְבֵּה וְהָבֵא מְעָט
Category: Covenant Curse
HIGH RISK. Direct echo of the Deuteronomic covenant-curse formulas (Deuteronomy 28:38-40; Leviticus 26:20). The German rendering must preserve a recognizable covenant-curse register so readers familiar with Luther-tradition renderings of Deuteronomy 28 can make the intended intertextual connection; a flattened ‘harte Zeiten’ (hard times) paraphrase would sever this deliberate scriptural echo and reduce covenant theology to circumstantial misfortune.
Running To His Own House
Approved rendering: während ihr, jeder zu seinem eigenen Haus, lauft
Transliteration: atem ratzim ish leveito
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Rejected alternatives: any paraphrase that varies vocabulary across the verse’s three ‘house’ occurrences for stylistic smoothness
Original: אַתֶּם רָצִים אִישׁ לְבֵיתוֹ
Category: Priorities
HIGH RISK, structural. The threefold repetition of ‘house’ (bayit) across Haggai 1:9 — ‘my house’ ruined, ‘his house’ each man’s private home — is the book’s key rhetorical device. Must remain audible in German as ‘Haus…Haus…Haus’; a smoother paraphrase that varies the vocabulary would flatten the verse’s most persuasive rhetorical feature and undercut the doctrine of God’s House versus Self-Interest.
Heavens Withheld Dew
Approved rendering: der Himmel hat den Tau zurückgehalten
Transliteration: shamayim mital … kal’u
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Original: שָׁמַיִם מִטָּל … כָּלְאוּ
Category: Covenant Curse
HIGH RISK, reception-level. Covenant-curse language depicting drought as God’s direct restraint of rainfall (cf. Deuteronomy 11:17; 1 Kings 8:35). The German rendering itself is linguistically straightforward, but contemporary German readers across all confessional and secular audience segments, shaped by scientific-naturalist assumptions, are likely to read agricultural failure as purely meteorological unless teaching material makes the covenantal-causal claim explicit.
Drought
Approved rendering: Dürre
Transliteration: choreb
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Rejected alternatives: Trockenheit (acceptable variant)
Original: חֹרֶב
Category: Priorities
HIGH RISK. Deliberately near-homophonous in Hebrew with ‘ruined’ (charev, used of the temple in 1:4, 9) — the temple lies ruined so God calls forth drought, a wordplay linking cause and consequence by sound as well as substance. The Hebrew sound-play cannot be reproduced in German; the underlying theological logic must be made explicit in teaching material, and a translator’s note flagging the lost wordplay is REQUIRED per this curriculum’s transparency discipline for untranslatable source-language features.
Remnant Of The People
Approved rendering: der Überrest des Volkes
Transliteration: she’erit ha’am
Doctrine: Covenant Continuity and the Remnant
Rejected alternatives: der Rest des Volkes (flatter, risks sounding like mere demographic remainder)
Original: שְׁאֵרִית הָעָם
Category: Covenant
HIGH RISK. A technical post-exilic theological term for the surviving covenant community, carrying hope of covenant continuity through and beyond judgment, not mere demographic leftovers. ‘Der Überrest des Volkes’ carries the necessary established biblical-theological weight; this term’s significance must be made explicit in teaching material, including its potential future cross-reference to Romans 9:27’s own remnant citation.
Shake Heavens And Earth
Approved rendering: Ich werde Himmel und Erde erschüttern
Transliteration: mar’ish et-hashamayim ve’et-ha’aretz
Doctrine: The Coming Glory of the Temple
Original: מַרְעִישׁ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת־הָאָרֶץ
Category: Eschatology
HIGH RISK. Cosmic-eschatological upheaval language (cf. Isaiah 13:13; Joel 3:16), grounding the promise of coming temple-glory in a cosmic act of God, not merely improved local political fortune. Occurs at 2:6 and 2:21. Directly cited in Hebrews 12:26-27 — teaching material must surface this cross-reference even though this curriculum does not otherwise cover Hebrews, since the doctrine of ‘The Coming Glory of the Temple’ depends on it.
Unclean Defiled
Approved rendering: unrein
Transliteration: tamé
Doctrine: Ritual Purity and Corporate Defilement
Original: טָמֵא
Category: Purity
HIGH RISK. Ritual impurity contracted by contact with a corpse (Numbers 19:11-13), which — unlike holiness — IS contagious by touch. Used analogically for how the community’s unaddressed temple-priority sin defiled all their subsequent religious activity: ‘so with this people… so with every work of their hands’ (2:14). ‘Unrein’ is lexically standard, but a purely ritual-legal reading disconnected from the doctrine of God’s House versus Self-Interest would miss the passage’s argumentative function entirely; teaching material must draw out the corporate-defilement analogy explicitly.
Kingdoms Of The Nations
Approved rendering: die Königreiche der Völker
Transliteration: mamlekhot hagoyim
Doctrine: The Eschatological Shaking of the Nations
Rejected alternatives: Reich Gottes (forbidden — opposite referent, see the inherited ‘kingdom_of_god’ entry above)
Original: מַמְלְכוֹת הַגּוֹיִם / כִּסֵּא מַמְלָכוֹת
Category: Eschatology
HIGH RISK. The full array of Gentile political power/empire — specifically the Persian imperial system and, by extension, all human political authority — which God promises to overthrow (2:22). Must NOT be confused with, or rendered using, the baseline’s ‘Reich Gottes’ (God’s own sovereign reign): this term denotes the OPPOSITE referent, human/Gentile kingdoms subject to God’s judgment.
I Have Chosen You
Approved rendering: ich habe dich erwählt
Transliteration: bacharticha
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope
Original: בְּחַרְתִּיךָ
Category: Davidic Covenant
HIGH RISK extension of the baseline ‘election’ entry (see above). Sovereign divine election of Zerubbabel personally (2:23), resolving the understated Davidic tension left open at 1:1. Same German root retained deliberately, but a mandatory teaching note must flag this as a specific historical-individual election to a Davidic-messianic-adjacent office, related but NOT identical to the NT soteriological election-to-salvation sense the baseline ‘Erwählung’ entry primarily addresses.
Medium Risk Terms
Glory
Approved rendering: Herrlichkeit
Transliteration: Herrlichkeit
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] God’s radiant presence and honor; avoid light-metaphor terms that could conflate with unrelated divine-radiance concepts. HAGGAI EXTENSION: this exact German root is MANDATORY for Haggai’s own kavod/ekkaved vocabulary (1:8; 2:3, 2:7, 2:9) to preserve OT-to-NT lexical continuity for the curriculum doctrine ‘The Coming Glory of the Temple.’ See the new Critical-risk entry ‘glory_be_glorified’ below for the Haggai-specific doctrinal framing this reused root requires.
Holy
Approved rendering: heilig
Transliteration: heilig
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: rein
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] Set apart for God and morally pure; ‘rein’ alone loses the set-apart sense. HAGGAI EXTENSION: the same German word must be reused for the narrower cultic-ritual sense in Haggai 2:12 (holy/consecrated sacrificial meat, Levitical contagion law) rather than inventing a second German term for one Hebrew root. See the new entry ‘holy_consecrated’ below for the required register-distinguishing teaching note.
God
Approved rendering: Gott
Transliteration: Gott
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] Sharp religious-literacy divide between former West and East Germany means ‘Gott’ is increasingly cultural-historical vocabulary rather than a live claim for a large ‘konfessionslos’ population. HAGGAI EXTENSION: this general audience-literacy caution applies with particular force to Haggai’s OT-specific vocabulary (LORD of Hosts, covenant-curse theology), which assumes even more background than NT material.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Reich Gottes
Transliteration: Reich Gottes
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] Long-standing biblical German phrase since Luther; God’s sovereign reign advancing through the gospel, not a political or national project. HAGGAI EXTENSION — MANDATORY FENCE: Haggai 2:22’s ‘kingdoms of the nations’ (human/Gentile political power under God’s judgment) is the OPPOSITE referent and must never be rendered with, or allowed to echo, ‘Reich Gottes’ vocabulary. See the new High-risk entry ‘kingdoms_of_the_nations’ below.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Messias
Transliteration: Messias
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] The Anointed One fulfilling OT promise. HAGGAI EXTENSION: relevant for framing the doctrine ‘The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope’ at 2:20-23, though this exact term does not occur in Haggai’s own Hebrew text; use only in teaching-material exposition connecting the signet-ring promise to its later messianic-typological trajectory (Matthew 1:12), never inserted into the translated Haggai text itself.
Covenant
Approved rendering: Bund
Transliteration: Bund
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] Relational covenant bond, established biblical German usage since Luther. HAGGAI EXTENSION: relevant framing vocabulary for the Deuteronomic covenant-curse/covenant-blessing structure underlying ‘Obedience and Blessing’ (1:6-11 curse register; 2:19 blessing turning-point), even though Haggai’s own Hebrew text does not use this specific word; supplied for teaching-material cross-referencing to Deuteronomy 28.
Seed Of David
Approved rendering: Nachkomme Davids
Transliteration: Nachkomme Davids
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Rejected alternatives: Same Davids (archaic/crude register)
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] Romans 1:3. HAGGAI EXTENSION: relevant background vocabulary for teaching material tracing Zerubbabel’s Davidic descent forward to the Matthew 1:12 genealogy referenced by the new ‘signet_ring’ entry below; not itself present in Haggai’s Hebrew text.
Word Of The Lord
Approved rendering: das Wort des HERRN
Transliteration: devar-YHWH
Doctrine: Inspiration and Authority of the Prophetic Word
Rejected alternatives: eine Botschaft (generic message, loses authoritative speech-act force)
Original: דְּבַר־יְהוָה
Category: Prophecy
NEW. The authoritative, event-causing formula structuring all four of Haggai’s dated oracles (1:1; 1:3; 2:1; 2:10; 2:20). German rendering is lexically stable and liturgically established; risk is reception, not translation — rising biblical illiteracy, especially in the former East Germany, means secular or lightly-churched readers may hear ‘a message’ rather than a history-altering divine speech-act. Teaching material must state the authoritative force explicitly.
Zerubbabel
Approved rendering: Serubbabel
Transliteration: Zerubbavel
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant and Messianic Hope
Rejected alternatives: Zerubbabel (non-standard German spelling)
Original: זְרֻבָּבֶל
Category: Davidic Covenant
NEW. Established German Bible spelling uses initial ‘S’ (Lutherbibel, Einheitsübersetzung convention), not ‘Z’ — using a Z-initial transliteration creates a cross-reference mismatch against standard German Bible tools German learners and pastors will check. Carries latent Davidic-covenant significance from 1:1, fully activated at 2:20-23.
Governor
Approved rendering: Statthalter
Transliteration: pechah
Doctrine: Priestly and Civil Leadership under God’s Word
Rejected alternatives: König (imports premature royal coloring)
Original: פֶּחָה
Category: Leadership
NEW. Persian-imperial administrative title denoting real but subordinate political authority. ‘Statthalter’ is the standard, unambiguous German rendering (parallel to Roman-era provincial governors in NT contexts); do not import royal coloring before the text itself does — the tension between Zerubbabel’s subordinate office and his latent Davidic status is Haggai’s own deliberate narrative arc, resolved only at 2:23.
Time Season
Approved rendering: Zeit
Transliteration: et
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Original: עֵת
Category: Priorities
NEW. Chronological time, or (as the people use it rhetorically in 1:2) a self-serving claim about the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ appointed moment. German ‘Zeit’ is lexically adequate; exposition must preserve the rhetorical irony — the people declare God’s timing, presuming to know it better than God — which a flat translation alone will not carry.
Paneled Houses
Approved rendering: getäfelte Häuser
Transliteration: bateikhem sefunim
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Rejected alternatives: prächtige Häuser (vaguer, loses the specific temple-paneling allusion)
Original: בָּתֵּיכֶם סְפוּנִים
Category: Priorities
NEW. Deliberate luxury-construction vocabulary echoing the same root used for costly cedar paneling in Solomon’s temple and palace (1 Kings 6:9; 7:3). ‘Getäfelte Häuser’ preserves this precise architectural allusion; teaching material must supply the 1 Kings cross-reference explicitly since it cannot be recovered from the German word alone.
Ruined Desolate
Approved rendering: verwüstet
Transliteration: charev
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Rejected alternatives: wüst (acceptable variant, keep root consistent)
Original: חָרֵב
Category: Priorities
NEW. Describes the temple’s ruined, rubble-strewn state roughly eighteen years after the initial return from exile. Sets up a deliberate near-homophone wordplay with ‘drought’ (choreb) at 1:11; use a consistent German root (‘verwüstet’/‘wüst’) throughout so the underlying cause-and-consequence logic remains traceable even though the Hebrew sound-play itself cannot transfer into German. See ‘drought’ below.
Consider Your Ways
Approved rendering: Richtet euer Herz auf eure Wege
Transliteration: simu levavkhem al-darkheikhem
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Rejected alternatives: Nehmt euch zu Herzen, wie es euch geht (acceptable Luther-idiom alternative, but must be used consistently, not interchangeably, with the primary rendering)
Original: שִׂימוּ לְבַבְכֶם עַל־דַּרְכֵיכם
Category: Obedience
NEW. Verbatim Hebrew refrain repeated at 1:5 and 1:7, forming an inclusio around the diagnostic half of the first oracle. This ONE German rendering must be used identically at both occurrences so the deliberate repetition remains audible to German readers.
Take Pleasure In It
Approved rendering: ich werde es wohlgefällig annehmen
Transliteration: ve’ertzeh-bo
Doctrine: Priorities: God’s House versus Self-Interest
Rejected alternatives: ich werde Gefallen daran haben (flatter, loses the sacrificial-acceptance register)
Original: וְאֶרְצֶה־בּוֹ
Category: Temple
NEW. God’s promise of favorable, sacrificial-acceptance-style reception of the rebuilt temple (cf. Leviticus 1:4 offering-acceptance vocabulary). The more technical-cultic phrasing keeps the tie between obedience and renewed divine favor visible to theologically attentive readers.
Blew It Away
Approved rendering: ich blies es fort
Transliteration: venafachti vo
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Rejected alternatives: ich habe es zerstreut/verweht (more abstract, loses the breath/puff physicality)
Original: וְנָפַחְתִּי בוֹ
Category: Covenant Curse
NEW. Vivid image of God’s direct, personal action dispersing the harvest, like blowing away chaff or dust — not passive misfortune. Prefer the more image-preserving ‘ich blies es fort’ over a smoother but flatter alternative; the doctrinal point (active divine intervention, not neutral bad luck) should not be lost to stylistic smoothing.
Fear Of The Lord
Approved rendering: Gottesfurcht
Transliteration: yir’ah
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Rejected alternatives: Furcht (bare, risks reading as raw terror rather than reverence)
Original: יִרְאָה
Category: Obedience
NEW. Reverential awe grounding the people’s obedient response (1:12). ‘Gottesfurcht’ disambiguates immediately toward reverential awe rather than raw terror or merely transactional compliance — important because ‘Obedience and Blessing’ depends on this response being relational, not purely calculative.
Be Strong
Approved rendering: Seid stark
Transliteration: chizku
Doctrine: The Presence and Spirit of God with His People
Original: חִזְקוּ
Category: Presence of God
NEW. Imperative of encouragement, repeated three times in 2:4 to Zerubbabel, Joshua, and ‘all the people,’ echoing Joshua’s commissioning language (Deuteronomy 31:6-7; Joshua 1:6-9). The deliberate triple repetition addressing both leaders and people identically should be flagged for teaching emphasis on shared responsibility.
Holy Consecrated
Approved rendering: heilig
Transliteration: qodesh
Doctrine: Ritual Purity and Corporate Defilement
Original: קֹדֶשׁ
Category: Purity
NEW extension of the baseline ‘holy’ entry (see above). Cultic holiness attaching to sacrificial meat/objects in the priestly-legal illustration of 2:10-14; the specific point is that holiness, unlike uncleanness, does NOT transfer by mere contact. Same German word as the baseline ethical-holiness sense is retained (no second German term coined for one Hebrew root), but a teaching-material register note distinguishing narrow cultic-ritual holiness from the broader Pauline ethical-moral sense is required.
Low Risk Terms
Prophet
Approved rendering: Prophet
Transliteration: Prophet
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Original: נָבִיא
Category: Prophecy
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] God’s spokesperson; do not confuse with an astrologer or fortune-teller. HAGGAI EXTENSION: reused directly for Haggai’s own repeated self-designation ‘Haggai the prophet’ / ‘Haggai, den Propheten’ (1:1, 1:3, 1:12; 2:1, 2:10). No new German-specific risk is introduced by this reuse.
Peace
Approved rendering: Friede
Transliteration: Friede
Doctrine: Peace with God
Original: שָׁלוֹם
Category: Temple
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] In Romans 5:1, relational peace with God through justification, not merely psychological calm. HAGGAI EXTENSION: reused for the shalom promise possibly attached to the close of Haggai 2:9, comprehensive covenant well-being; flag transparently that verse-inclusion of this clause varies by manuscript/translation tradition, per this curriculum’s established discipline for textual variants.
David
Approved rendering: David
Transliteration: David
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly, unchanged] Standard proper name form across all German traditions. HAGGAI EXTENSION: relevant background for teaching material connecting Zerubbabel’s Davidic descent (implicit at 1:1, activated at 2:20-23) to the wider Davidic-covenant doctrine; Haggai’s own Hebrew text never uses this name directly, so this entry serves cross-reference/exposition purposes only.
Haggai
Approved rendering: Haggai
Transliteration: Ḥaggay
Doctrine: N/A (proper name)
Original: חַגַּי
Category: Prophecy
NEW. The prophet’s proper name, likely meaning ‘festal one’ from the root for pilgrim-festival. Stable across all German Bible traditions; zero rendering risk.
Bag With Holes
Approved rendering: ein durchlöcherter Geldbeutel
Transliteration: tzelochit nekuvah
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Rejected alternatives: vergebliche Mühe (abstracts away the vivid concrete folk-image)
Original: צְלוּחִית נְקוּבָה
Category: Covenant Curse
NEW. Vivid folk-proverb image for money/provisions that vanish no matter how much is earned. Keep concrete; do not abstract into ‘futile labor,’ which loses the memorable image the text intentionally uses.
Labor Of The Hands
Approved rendering: die Arbeit ihrer Hände
Transliteration: yegia kapayim
Doctrine: Obedience and Blessing
Original: יְגִיעַ כַּפָּיִם
Category: Covenant Curse
NEW. The climactic final item in an escalating judgment list (land, hills, grain, wine, oil, produce, humans, animals), summarizing the totality of human productive effort now placed under covenant claim. Lexically adequate; risk is expositional (climactic list-position), not translational.
