Core Glossary
08 Core Glossary — 2 Thessalonians (English → German)
This glossary records every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, drawn from every chapter of 2 Thessalonians (1, 2, 3). Terms already present in the baseline Romans Language Package translation_memory.json are marked [INHERITED] and reuse the exact recorded German rendering without modification. New terms unique to this curriculum are marked [NEW] and proposed for translation memory addition at the risk tier indicated.
Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions: Critical (human theologian review mandatory, every occurrence), High (human theologian review required), Medium (native speaker review recommended), Low (automated review sufficient).
Table 1 — Core Passage Terms (2 Thessalonians 2:1-12)
| # | English Term | Greek Original | Transliteration | German Rendering | Doctrine | Risk | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Coming / Parousia | παρουσία | parousia | Ankunft / Wiederkunft | The Day of the Lord | High | NEW | 2:1, 8, 9. No single German word covers both “royal state arrival” and “presence”; pair “Wiederkunft” (return) with “Erscheinen” (epiphaneia, v.8) to keep distinct. Positive bridge: German liturgical “Advent” derives from this word’s Latin gloss. |
| 2 | Gathering together | ἐπισυναγωγή | episynagōgē | unser Versammeltwerden bei ihm | The Day of the Lord | Medium | NEW | 2:1. Avoid bare “Versammlung” (generic meeting word); gloss explicitly as gathering to Christ. Cf. Hebrews 10:25, only other NT use. |
| 3 | Shaken (in mind) | σαλευθῆναι | saleuthēnai | erschüttert werden | The Day of the Lord | Low | NEW | 2:2. Standard rendering, low ambiguity. |
| 4 | Troubled / alarmed | θροεῖσθαι | throeisthai | erschrecken / in Aufregung geraten | The Day of the Lord | Low | NEW | 2:2. Echoes Matthew 24:6 / Mark 13:7 end-times panic vocabulary. |
| 5 | ”Has come” (perfect, not imminent) | ἐνέστηκεν | enestēken | sei schon da / bereits gegenwärtig | The Day of the Lord | Critical | NEW | 2:2. Exegetical crux of the whole passage — NOT “is at hand/imminent” (mellein). Must render “als ob der Tag des Herrn schon da wäre.” Mandatory theologian review. |
| 6 | Day of the Lord | ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου | hē hēmera tou kyriou | der Tag des Herrn | The Day of the Lord | Critical | NEW | 2:2 (also 1:10, “that day”). Reuses established “Herr” (Critical, lord doctrine). Stable technical eschatological phrase across German Bible tradition. |
| 7 | Letter / epistle (forgery concern) | ἐπιστολή | epistolē | Brief | Standing Firm in the Traditions | Low | NEW | 2:2, cf. 3:17. Theological weight lies in the authentication concern raised, not the word itself. |
| 8 | Deceive utterly | ἐξαπατήσῃ | exapatēsē | gänzlich täuschen / hinters Licht führen | The Man of Lawlessness | Low | NEW | 2:3. Intensive compound of apataō; low ambiguity. |
| 9 | The apostasy / falling away | ἡ ἀποστασία | hē apostasia | der Glaubensabfall (NEVER bare “der Abfall”) | The Day of the Lord / The Man of Lawlessness | Critical | NEW | 2:3. SEVERE German-specific homonym collision: bare “Abfall” overwhelmingly means “garbage/waste” in modern German. Always qualify as “Glaubensabfall” or “Abfall von Gott/vom Glauben.” Mandatory theologian review. |
| 10 | Man of lawlessness | ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας | ho anthrōpos tēs anomias | der Mensch der Gesetzlosigkeit | The Man of Lawlessness | Critical | NEW | 2:3 (cf. 2:8’s “ho anomos”). HIGHEST German-culture-specific risk in this package: (1) Luther/Smalcald Articles historically identified this figure with the Papacy — note transparently, do not adjudicate; (2) risk of spontaneous Hitler-era political resonance given self-exaltation language (2:4) — legitimate illustrative note but must not be presented as exhaustive/final identification. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence. |
| 11 | Revealed / unveiled | ἀποκαλυφθῇ | apokalyphthē | offenbart werden | The Man of Lawlessness | Medium | NEW | 2:3, 6, 8. Same root as “Offenbarung” (Revelation/Apocalypse); ironic mirroring of true divine revelation is a textual feature, not a translation problem. |
| 12 | Son of perdition | ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας | ho huios tēs apōleias | der Sohn des Verderbens | The Man of Lawlessness | High | NEW | 2:3. Identical phrase used of Judas in John 17:12 — worth surfacing as intertextual echo. Hebraic “son of X” idiom needs brief gloss for German readers. |
| 13 | Opposes / the adversary | ὁ ἀντικείμενος | antikeimenos | der Widersacher | The Man of Lawlessness | Medium | NEW | 2:4. Shared German vocabulary with “Satan/der Teufel” elsewhere (e.g. 1 Peter 5:8) — theologically apt, should be preserved. |
| 14 | Exalts himself | ὑπεραιρόμενος | hyperairomenos | sich selbst erhöht / sich erhebt über | The Man of Lawlessness | Medium | NEW | 2:4. Deliberate ironic contrast with Philippians 2:9’s “hoch erhöht” (Christ’s Father-given exaltation) — self-exaltation vs. given exaltation. |
| 15 | Temple of God | ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ | naos tou theou | der Tempel Gottes | The Man of Lawlessness | Critical | NEW | 2:4. Genuinely disputed referent (literal Jerusalem Temple / the Church / figurative usurpation) — flag for theologian review without silently resolving. |
| 16 | Proclaiming himself (to be God) | ἀποδεικνύντα | apodeiknynta | sich als Gott ausgibt / darstellt | The Man of Lawlessness | Medium | NEW | 2:4. Formal, official-demonstration connotation; counterfeits legitimate divine self-demonstration (cf. Acts 2:22). |
| 17 | Remember | μνημονεύετε | mnemoneuete | erinnert ihr euch nicht | Standing Firm in the Traditions | Low | NEW | 2:5. Appeal to Paul’s prior oral teaching as authoritative — connects to paradosis doctrine at 2:15. |
| 18 | The restrainer (neuter, “that which restrains”) | τὸ κατέχον | to katechon | das, was zurückhält | The Man of Lawlessness | Critical | NEW | 2:6. Genuinely and historically unresolved exegetical crux (Roman Empire? God’s providence? gospel proclamation? Holy Spirit? human government?). Preserve uncertainty; do NOT silently adopt one identification. Mandatory theologian review. |
| 19 | Appointed time | καιρός | kairos | seine Zeit / zur rechten Zeit | The Man of Lawlessness | Low | NEW | 2:6. Qualitative, divinely-appointed time, distinct from chronos. Reinforces providence doctrine (cf. baseline Vorsehung). |
| 20 | Mystery of lawlessness | τὸ μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας | to mystērion tēs anomias | das Geheimnis der Gesetzlosigkeit | The Man of Lawlessness | Critical | NEW | 2:7. Reuses “Geheimnis” [INHERITED from Ephesians/Colossians mystery_of_christ] but applies it to an evil counterfeit — must be explicitly glossed on first occurrence to avoid confusion with the positive mystery_of_christ doctrine. |
| 21 | The restrainer (masculine, “he who restrains”) | ὁ κατέχων | ho katechōn | der, welcher zurückhält | The Man of Lawlessness | Critical | NEW | 2:7. Neuter-to-masculine shift from v.6 is a significant exegetical crux (impersonal restraining force vs. personal restraining agent); German der/das gender distinction can naturally preserve this shift if chosen deliberately — flag for theologian confirmation of consistent gender-matching. |
| 22 | The lawless one | ὁ ἄνομος | ho anomos | der Gesetzlose | The Man of Lawlessness | Critical | NEW | 2:8. Same root as anthrōpos tēs anomias (2:3); render consistently to preserve the terminological link. Distinguish from “der Böse” (used elsewhere of Satan) to preserve the lawless-one/Satan distinction (v.9). |
| 23 | Breath of his mouth | τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ | to pneuma tou stomatos autou | der Hauch/Odem seines Mundes | The Man of Lawlessness | Medium | NEW | 2:8. NOT “der Geist” (would wrongly suggest Heiliger Geist). Alludes to Isaiah 11:4 messianic judgment imagery. |
| 24 | Appearing of his coming | ἐπιφάνεια τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ | epiphaneia tēs parousias autou | das Erscheinen seiner Ankunft | The Day of the Lord | Medium | NEW | 2:8. Deliberately stacked/redundant construction for emphasis — preserve both terms, do not collapse to one word. |
| 25 | Working of Satan | κατ’ ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ | kat’ energeian tou Satana | nach dem Wirken des Satans | The Man of Lawlessness | High | NEW | 2:9. “Wirken” is theologically neutral in itself (used of both divine and demonic activity); context must disambiguate. Preserves energeia/energeitai wordplay linking vv.7 and 9. |
| 26 | Signs and lying wonders | σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ψεύδους | sēmeia kai terata pseudous | Zeichen und Wunder der Lüge | The Man of Lawlessness | Critical | NEW | 2:9. Deliberately mimics the genuine dynamis/sēmeion/teras triad used of true apostolic/divine miracles elsewhere. Keep “der Lüge” qualifying the whole triad, not softened to vague “false miracles.” |
| 27 | Deceit of unrighteousness | ἀπάτη ἀδικίας | apatē adikias | Verführung der Ungerechtigkeit | The Man of Lawlessness / God’s Righteous Judgment | Medium | NEW | 2:10. Reuses established “Gerechtigkeit”/“ungerecht” word-family. |
| 28 | Love of the truth | ἡ ἀγάπη τῆς ἀληθείας | hē agapē tēs alētheias | die Liebe zur Wahrheit | God’s Righteous Judgment | High | NEW | 2:10. Diagnosis is volitional rejection, not mere lack of access to truth — must not be moralized into simple ignorance. |
| 29 | Strong delusion | ἐνέργεια πλάνης | energeia planēs | wirksame Verführung / kräftige Täuschung | God’s Righteous Judgment | Critical | NEW | 2:11. God actively (judicially) sends this; must not read as passive “they happen to be deceived,” nor imply God originates the lie’s content (Satan/the lawless one do, per v.9-10). Mandatory theologian review. |
| 30 | The lie | τὸ ψεῦδος | to pseudos | die Lüge | The Man of Lawlessness | Low | NEW | 2:11. Definite, singular “the lie” (not “a lie” among many) — the polar opposite of “the truth” (v.12), a binary not a spectrum. |
| 31 | Judged / condemned | κριθῶσιν | krithōsin | gerichtet werden / verurteilt werden | God’s Righteous Judgment | Critical | NEW | 2:12. German “Gericht/richten/verurteilen” vocabulary carries distinctive 20th-century German judicial-history resonance (Volksgerichtshof, Nuremberg); must be framed as categorically distinct divine eschatological judgment. Mandatory theologian review. |
| 32 | Took pleasure in unrighteousness | εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ | eudokēsantes tē adikia | Gefallen an der Ungerechtigkeit hatten | God’s Righteous Judgment | Medium | NEW | 2:12. Positive delight, not mere passive tolerance — do not weaken to “hingenommen haben” (merely accepted). |
Table 2 — Chapter 1 Terms (1:1-12)
| # | English Term | Greek Original | Transliteration | German Rendering | Doctrine | Risk | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 33 | Church | ἐκκλησία | ekklēsia | Gemeinde | Church as God’s People | High | INHERITED | 1:1. Exact reuse from Romans baseline; prefer over “Kirche” for gathered-body sense. |
| 34 | Grace | χάρις | charis | Gnade | Grace | High | INHERITED | 1:2, 12. Exact reuse. |
| 35 | Peace | εἰρήνη | eirēnē | Friede | Peace with God | Low | INHERITED | 1:2. Exact reuse. |
| 36 | Perseverance / endurance | ὑπομονή | hypomonē | Standhaftigkeit / Ausharren | Perseverance under Persecution | Medium | NEW | 1:4; cf. 3:5. “Standhaftigkeit” preferred over bare “Geduld” (suggests passive waiting). Active steadfastness under active hostility. |
| 37 | Persecutions | διωγμοί | diōgmoi | Verfolgungen | Perseverance under Persecution | Medium | NEW | 1:4. Standard rendering, keep paired with thlipseis (not collapsed together). |
| 38 | Afflictions | θλίψεις | thlipseis | Bedrängnisse / Leiden | Perseverance under Persecution | Medium | NEW | 1:4. Broader than diōgmoi (any crushing pressure, not only faith-motivated hostility). |
| 39 | Righteous judgment of God | δικαία κρίσις τοῦ θεοῦ | dikaia krisis tou theou | das gerechte Gericht Gottes | God’s Righteous Judgment | Critical | NEW | 1:5. Same German judicial-history sensitivity as krithōsin (2:12). Reuses established “Gerechtigkeit” word-family for “gerecht.” Mandatory theologian review. |
| 40 | Everlasting destruction | ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος | olethros aiōnios | ewiges Verderben | God’s Righteous Judgment | High | NEW | 1:9. “Vom Angesicht des Herrn” (from the presence of the Lord) must preserve relational-exclusion sense. Flag debate on annihilationist vs. eternal-conscious-separation readings without resolving it. |
| 41 | Glorified | ἐνδοξασθῇ | endoxasthē | verherrlicht werden | Deity/Glory of Christ | Medium | INHERITED (verb form) | 1:10, 12. Verb form of established Herrlichkeit. |
| 42 | Worthy of the calling | ἀξιώσῃ τῆς κλήσεως | axiōsē tēs klēseōs | würdig eurer Berufung | Divine Calling / Effectual Calling | High | INHERITED | 1:11. Reuses established Berufung exactly, including its career-vocation/legal-appeal collision caution. |
| 43 | Work of faith with power | ἔργον πίστεως ἐν δυνάμει | ergon pisteōs en dynamei | Werk des Glaubens in/mit Kraft | Faith / Power of God | Medium | INHERITED | 1:11. Reuses established Glaube and Kraft Gottes; genitive preserves faith-produces-work order, guarding against Werkgerechtigkeit. |
| 44 | Kingdom of God | βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ | basileia tou theou | Reich Gottes | Kingdom Mission | Medium | INHERITED | 1:5. Exact reuse (“counted worthy of the kingdom of God”). |
Table 3 — Chapter 2:13-17 Terms
| # | English Term | Greek Original | Transliteration | German Rendering | Doctrine | Risk | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 45 | Chose | εἵλατο | heilato | erwählt | Election and Predestination | High | INHERITED (concept) | 2:13. Different verb root than eklegomai but identical theological concept as established Erwählung; same Lutheran/Reformed confessional sensitivity applies. |
| 46 | Sanctification of the Spirit | ἁγιασμὸς πνεύματος | hagiasmos pneumatos | Heiligung durch den Geist | Sanctification | Medium | INHERITED | 2:13. Exact reuse of Heiligung; confirm agency reading (Spirit as sanctifying agent) is clear. |
| 47 | Belief of the truth | πίστις ἀληθείας | pistis alētheias | Glaube an die Wahrheit | Faith / God’s Righteous Judgment | Medium | INHERITED (Glaube) | 2:13. Echoes 2:10, 12’s truth vocabulary — deliberate structural echo across the chapter. |
| 48 | Obtaining of glory | περιποίησις δόξης | peripoiēsis doxēs | das Erlangen der Herrlichkeit | Deity/Glory of Christ | Medium | NEW | 2:14. Reuses established Herrlichkeit; peripoiēsis itself is a new supporting term, single occurrence in this book. |
| 49 | Stand firm | στήκετε | stēkete | steht fest | Standing Firm in the Traditions | Medium | NEW | 2:15. Same verb form as Galatians 5:1’s freedom_in_christ “stand firm” — reuse this exact German verb to reinforce cross-book terminological link. |
| 50 | Hold the traditions | κρατεῖτε τὰς παραδόσεις | kratite tas paradoseis | haltet fest an den Überlieferungen | Standing Firm in the Traditions | Critical | NEW | 2:15. MAJOR confessional flashpoint (Catholic Tradition/sola scriptura debate). Present Paul’s own first-century apostolic authority without adjudicating the later systematic dispute. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence. |
| 51 | Comfort / establish | παρακαλέσαι καὶ στηρίξαι | parakalesai kai stērixai | trösten und stärken | Perseverance under Persecution | Low-Medium | INHERITED (parakaleō context-sensitivity) | 2:16-17. Applies the Romans baseline’s existing context-sensitive note (comfort sense here, not admonish sense). |
Table 4 — Chapter 3 Terms
| # | English Term | Greek Original | Transliteration | German Rendering | Doctrine | Risk | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 52 | Word of the Lord run and be glorified | ὁ λόγος τοῦ κυρίου τρέχῃ καὶ δοξάζηται | ho logos tou kyriou trechē kai doxazētai | das Wort des Herrn habe Fortgang und werde verherrlicht | Mission to the Nations / Evangelism | Low | INHERITED (Herr, Herrlichkeit) | 3:1. Vivid running-race metaphor for unhindered gospel advance; echoes Psalm 147:15. |
| 53 | Unreasonable and wicked men | ἄτοποι καὶ πονηροὶ ἄνθρωποι | atopoi kai ponēroi anthrōpoi | unvernünftige und böse Menschen | Perseverance under Persecution | Low | NEW | 3:2. Active hostile opposition to gospel proclamation. |
| 54 | The Lord is faithful | πιστὸς ὁ κύριος | pistos ho kyrios | treu ist der Herr | Faith / Lordship of Christ | High | INHERITED (Herr) | 3:3. “Vom Bösen” (from the evil one) requires disambiguation (personal Satan vs. impersonal evil), paralleling the Lord’s Prayer’s established ambiguity at Matthew 6:13. |
| 55 | The steadfastness of Christ | ὑπομονὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ | hypomonē tou Christou | die Standhaftigkeit Christi | Perseverance under Persecution | Medium | NEW (reuses #36) | 3:5. Genuinely ambiguous genitive (Christ’s own steadfastness, as example, OR steadfast waiting for Christ) — preserve ambiguity, note both senses. |
| 56 | Walking disorderly | ἀτάκτως | ataktōs | unordentlich wandeln | Standing Firm in the Traditions | Medium | NEW | 3:6, 11. Military “out of formation” metaphor; ties directly to paradosis vocabulary at 2:15 (must reuse “Überlieferung” exactly). |
| 57 | If any will not work, neither let him eat | εἴ τις οὐ θέλει ἐργάζεσθαι μηδὲ ἐσθιέτω | ei tis ou thelei ergazesthai mēde esthietō | Wer nicht arbeiten will, soll auch nicht essen | Standing Firm in the Traditions | High | NEW | 3:10. DISTINCTIVE German historical-resonance risk: quoted by Lenin, echoed in 1936 Soviet Constitution Art. 12, circulated in DDR/East German socialist political culture largely detached from its Pauline pastoral context. Mandatory explicit historical recontextualization in teaching material. |
| 58 | Busybodies (wordplay: not working but working-around) | περιεργαζομένους (vs. μὴ ἐργαζομένους) | periergazomenous | sich in alles einmischen, statt zu arbeiten | Standing Firm in the Traditions | Low | NEW | 3:11. Greek ergazomai/periergazomai wordplay has no natural German equivalent — flag as translation-craft note (wordplay loss), not doctrinal risk. |
| 59 | Work with quietness | μετὰ ἡσυχίας ἐργαζόμενοι | meta hēsychias ergazomenoi | in Ruhe/Stille arbeiten | Standing Firm in the Traditions | Low | NEW | 3:12. Positive corrective to disorderly idleness. |
| 60 | Note that man / have no company with him | σημειοῦσθε … μὴ συναναμίγνυσθαι | sēmeiousthe … mē synanamignysthai | merkt euch … habt keinen Umgang mit ihm | Standing Firm in the Traditions | Medium | NEW | 3:14. Parallels the Matthew package’s church_discipline_and_forgiveness doctrine (restorative framing); the “not as enemy but as brother” qualifier (v.15) must never be dropped. |
| 61 | Admonish as a brother, not as an enemy | μὴ ὡς ἐχθρὸν ἀλλὰ νουθετεῖτε ὡς ἀδελφόν | mē hōs echthron alla noutheteite hōs adelphon | nicht als Feind, sondern als Bruder ermahnen | Standing Firm in the Traditions | Medium | INHERITED (ermahnen) | 3:15. Reuses established “ermahnen” (exhort/admonish) from the Romans baseline’s context-sensitive entry. |
| 62 | The Lord of peace | ὁ κύριος τῆς εἰρήνης | ho kyrios tēs eirēnēs | der Herr des Friedens | Lordship of Christ / Peace | Critical | INHERITED (Herr, Friede) | 3:16. Exact reuse of both established terms. |
| 63 | The token/sign in every epistle | τὸ σημεῖον ἐν πάσῃ ἐπιστολῇ | to sēmeion en pasē epistolē | das Erkennungszeichen in jedem Brief | Standing Firm in the Traditions / Inspiration of Scripture | Medium | NEW | 3:17. Paul’s handwriting as anti-forgery authentication; directly resolves the letter-forgery concern raised at 2:2. Cross-reference explicitly in teaching material. |
| 64 | Grace (closing benediction) | ἡ χάρις | hē charis | die Gnade | Grace | High | INHERITED | 3:18. Exact reuse; standard Pauline letter-closing formula. |
Risk Summary for 2 Thessalonians Package
| Risk Tier | Count | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 15 | Mandatory human theologian review, every occurrence |
| High | 10 | Human theologian review required |
| Medium | 26 | Native speaker review recommended |
| Low | 13 | Automated review sufficient |
| Total terms cataloged | 64 |
Newly Proposed Critical-Risk Terms Requiring Priority Theologian Briefing
- der Mensch der Gesetzlosigkeit (man of lawlessness, 2:3, 8) — Reformation-era Papacy-identification history plus contemporary totalitarian-figure resonance risk.
- der Glaubensabfall (the apostasy, 2:3) — severe modern-German homonym collision with “garbage/waste”; never use bare “Abfall.”
- haltet fest an den Überlieferungen (hold the traditions, 2:15) — direct engagement with the historic Catholic/Protestant Scripture-and-Tradition confessional dispute.
- das gerechte Gericht Gottes / gerichtet werden (righteous judgment / judged, 1:5; 2:12) — German 20th-century judicial-history resonance (Volksgerichtshof, Nuremberg) requires careful categorical distinction from divine eschatological judgment.
- das, was zurückhält / der, welcher zurückhält (the restrainer, neuter and masculine, 2:6-7) — genuinely unresolved historic exegetical crux; preserve ambiguity rather than adopting one identification.
- wirksame Verführung (strong delusion, 2:11) — must preserve God’s active judicial role without implying he originates the lie’s content.
- der Tag des Herrn / sei schon da (the Day of the Lord / has come, 2:2) — the enestēken exegetical crux is foundational to the entire passage’s argument.
Terms Requiring Native-Speaker Historical-Sensitivity Notes (not necessarily theologian-tier)
- “Wer nicht arbeiten will, soll auch nicht essen” (3:10) — Soviet/DDR political-slogan afterlife requires explicit recontextualization for German audiences, particularly readers formed in the former East Germany.
This glossary extends, and does not contradict, the baseline Romans Language Package translation_memory.json (version 9). All INHERITED terms above must be added to translation memory under their existing keys with 2 Thessalonians citations appended to their notes field; all NEW terms above are proposed as new translation_memory.json entries pending Phase 1 Step 2 (Translation Memory Update) and Phase 1 Step 3 (Doctrine Risk Registry Update).
Critical Risk Terms
Apostasy
Approved rendering: der Glaubensabfall
Transliteration: der Glaubensabfall
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: der Abfall (bare — overwhelmingly means garbage/refuse/waste in contemporary German: ‘Abfall trennen,’ ‘Restabfall,’ ‘Sondermüll’; a severe homonym-collision risk comparable in kind to the baseline’s ‘Berufung’ collision), Apostasie (academic loanword, unfamiliar to lay readers; acceptable only as a footnoted supplementary gloss, never the primary rendering)
Original: ἡ ἀποστασία
Category: The Day of the Lord
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 (hē apostasia), a definite, singular, future eschatological event of religious defection preceding the man of lawlessness’s revelation. MUST always render as ‘der Glaubensabfall’ or ‘der Abfall von Gott/vom Glauben’ — never bare ‘der Abfall.’ Mandatory theologian review given the doctrine’s centrality to the whole passage’s argument.
Day Of The Lord Already Present
Approved rendering: sei schon da / bereits gegenwärtig
Transliteration: sei schon da / bereits gegenwärtig
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: sei nahe (imminent — flattens the perfect-tense enestēken and would make the Thessalonians’ recorded alarm, 2:2, structurally nonsensical)
Original: ἐνέστηκεν
Category: The Day of the Lord
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 2:2 (enestēken), the exegetical crux of the whole passage: the false teaching Paul refutes is that the Day of the Lord has ALREADY ARRIVED, not merely that it is imminent (which would require mellein). The entire argument of 2:3-12 (apostasy and the man of lawlessness must come first) depends on this reading. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: der Tag des Herrn
Transliteration: der Tag des Herrn
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου
Category: The Day of the Lord
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 2:2 (also cf. ‘that day,’ 1:10); reuses the established Critical-risk ‘Herr.’ The OT prophetic technical term (Joel 2:31; Amos 5:18-20; Zephaniah 1:14-18) for the Lord’s decisive eschatological intervention. Stable, fixed compound phrase across German Bible tradition; still requires enough surrounding context on each occurrence that readers do not default to a calendar-notation reading.
Hold The Traditions
Approved rendering: haltet fest an den Überlieferungen
Transliteration: haltet fest an den Überlieferungen
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Rejected alternatives: Tradition (an acceptable direct cognate; either ‘Tradition’ or ‘Überlieferung’ is linguistically correct — the fence lies not between these two words but in the surrounding commentary, which must not silently adjudicate the later confessional dispute)
Original: κρατεῖτε τὰς παραδόσεις
Category: Standing Firm in the Traditions
CRITICAL — a major confessional flashpoint. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 (kratite tas paradoseis). The Catholic theological tradition has historically cited this verse (alongside 1 Corinthians 11:2 and 2 Timothy 2:2) as scriptural support for the authority of apostolic Tradition alongside Scripture (Council of Trent; Vatican II’s Dei Verbum), in direct tension with the Reformation’s sola scriptura principle. Teaching material must present Paul’s own first-century apostolic authority (his specific oral and written teaching to this one congregation) without adjudicating the later systematic Catholic/Protestant dispute in the translated text itself. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
Judged Condemned
Approved rendering: gerichtet werden / verurteilt werden
Transliteration: gerichtet werden / verurteilt werden
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: κριθῶσιν
Category: God’s Righteous Judgment
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 2:12 (krithōsin), the final, formal, judicial outcome for those who rejected the truth. German ‘Gericht/richten/verurteilen’ vocabulary is inescapably associated in modern public memory with 20th-century German judicial history (the Volksgerichtshof, the Nuremberg trials, Vergangenheitsbewältigung discourse). Teaching material must clearly frame every occurrence as God’s own eschatological, perfectly righteous judgment — categorically different from any human court. Mandatory theologian review.
Lord Of Peace
Approved rendering: der Herr des Friedens
Transliteration: der Herr des Friedens
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: ὁ κύριος τῆς εἰρήνης
Category: Perseverance under Persecution
CRITICAL (reuses both established Herr and Friede). 2 Thessalonians 3:16, the closing benediction, ‘Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way.’ Render consistently with existing Critical- and Low-risk handling of both component terms.
Lord
Approved rendering: Herr
Transliteration: Herr
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Meister, Chef
CRITICAL: Romans 10:9 ‘Jesus ist Herr.’ ‘Herr’ is also the ordinary everyday title ‘Mr.’ with no separate everyday honorific to protect the exalted sense. Inherited from Romans package. 2 Thessalonians has an unusually high concentration of ‘Herr’ occurrences for its length: ‘der Tag des Herrn’ (2:2), ‘der Herr Jesus’ at his parousia (1:7-10; 2:8), ‘treu ist der Herr’ (3:3), ‘der Herr des Friedens’ (3:16). Every occurrence requires sufficient surrounding context so biblically illiterate readers do not default to the mundane address sense.
Man Of Lawlessness
Approved rendering: der Mensch der Gesetzlosigkeit
Transliteration: der Mensch der Gesetzlosigkeit
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: der Mensch der Sünde (KJV’s ‘man of sin,’ following the hamartias textual variant rather than the preferred, modern-critical-text anomias reading), der Mensch der Bosheit (older Luther-tradition register alternative; acceptable only as a secondary register variant, not primary)
Original: ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
CRITICAL — the single highest German-culture-specific risk term in this package. 2 Thessalonians 2:3, 8. Two converging historical layers require mandatory transparent framing without adjudication: (1) Luther and the Smalcald Articles (1537, Part II, Art. IV) formally identified this figure with the Papacy, a still-known, confessionally load-bearing tradition for a mixed Catholic/Protestant/Free-church audience; (2) Germany’s own 20th-century experience of a self-exalting totalitarian figure claiming absolute authority makes a spontaneous Hitler-era association likely given the self-exaltation language of 2:4 — legitimate as illustration, but must never be presented as exhausting or resolving the text’s still-future eschatological referent. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
Mystery Of Lawlessness
Approved rendering: das Geheimnis der Gesetzlosigkeit
Transliteration: das Geheimnis der Gesetzlosigkeit
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: τὸ μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 2:7 (to mystērion tēs anomias), the lawless spirit already secretly operative before the man of lawlessness’s personal revelation. Reuses the baseline’s established ‘Geheimnis’ (Ephesians 3:3-9’s mystery_of_christ; Colossians 1:24-29’s mystery_christ_in_you) but applies it to an evil counterfeit — a deliberate scriptural parallelism that must be preserved, not smoothed away. Mandatory explicit gloss on first occurrence distinguishing this evil ‘Geheimnis’ from the positive ‘Geheimnis Christi’ doctrine established elsewhere in this pipeline.
Righteous Judgment Of God
Approved rendering: das gerechte Gericht Gottes
Transliteration: das gerechte Gericht Gottes
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: δικαία κρίσις τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: God’s Righteous Judgment
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 1:5 (dikaia krisis tou theou), God’s future eschatological verdict, counting the persecuted congregation worthy of the kingdom while repaying affliction to their persecutors. Reuses the established Gerechtigkeit word-family for ‘gerecht.’ Carries the same modern-German judicial-history sensitivity flagged for krithōsin (2:12). Mandatory theologian review.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Gerechtigkeit
Transliteration: Gerechtigkeit
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Tugend
CRITICAL: ‘Gerechtigkeit Gottes’ in Romans 1:17 is the exact phrase behind Luther’s own reported breakthrough (Turmerlebnis). Inherited from Romans package. In 2 Thessalonians the word-family surfaces negatively as ‘Ungerechtigkeit’ (unrighteousness) in the ‘deceit of unrighteousness’ (2:10) and ‘took pleasure in unrighteousness’ (2:12); the Gerechtigkeit/ungerecht link established here must remain visible so German readers connect the letter’s condemnation language back to the positive baseline doctrine.
Signs And Lying Wonders
Approved rendering: Zeichen und Wunder der Lüge
Transliteration: Zeichen und Wunder der Lüge
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: falsche Wunder (vague, softened phrasing that loses the emphasis that these are wonders in the service of a lie, echoing 2:11’s ‘believe the lie’)
Original: ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 2:9 (en pasē dynamei kai sēmeiois kai terasin pseudous), deliberately mimics the genuine dynamis/sēmeion/teras triad used of true apostolic and divine miracles elsewhere (Acts 2:22; Hebrews 2:4). Keep ‘der Lüge’ qualifying the whole triad. Flag for theologian review so the counterfeit/genuine miracle contrast is taught explicitly.
Strong Delusion
Approved rendering: wirksame Verführung / kräftige Täuschung
Transliteration: wirksame Verführung / kräftige Täuschung
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: sie werden getäuscht (passive — obscures God’s own active judicial role in the sequence)
Original: ἐνέργειαν πλάνης
Category: God’s Righteous Judgment
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 2:11 (energeian planēs), an active, divinely permitted operative deception God sends as judgment upon those who already rejected the love of the truth. Must not imply either (a) God is the ultimate author of the lie’s content (Satan and the lawless one originate it, 2:9-10) or (b) God’s genuine, sovereign, judicial involvement is softened away. Mandatory theologian review.
Temple Of God
Approved rendering: der Tempel Gottes
Transliteration: der Tempel Gottes
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 2:4 (naos tou theou), the inner sanctuary. The referent is genuinely disputed among interpreters (literal rebuilt Jerusalem Temple; the Church; figurative total religious usurpation) and the text itself does not resolve this. ‘Der Tempel Gottes’ is the standard, stable rendering and should be used without alteration; mandatory theologian review to flag the ambiguity rather than silently resolving it, per this pipeline’s existing discipline for comparable unresolved cruxes (e.g. Mark 13:32).
The Lawless One
Approved rendering: der Gesetzlose
Transliteration: der Gesetzlose
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: der Böse (reserved exclusively for Satan/the evil one elsewhere in this pipeline, e.g. Matthew 6:13 / 2 Thessalonians 3:3’s ‘vom Bösen’ — must not be used here, to preserve the lawless-one/Satan distinction of 2:9)
Original: ὁ ἄνομος
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 2:8 (ho anomos), same root as anthrōpos tēs anomias (2:3); render consistently as ‘der Gesetzlose’ throughout 2:3-8 to preserve the terminological link. Same historical-sensitivity framing requirements as man_of_lawlessness above.
The Restrainer Masculine
Approved rendering: der, welcher zurückhält
Transliteration: der, welcher zurückhält
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ὁ κατέχων
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 2:7 (ho katechōn), grammatically personal (masculine) versus the impersonal neuter of 2:6 (to katechon). This neuter-to-masculine shift is a genuine, significant exegetical crux. German’s der/das gender system can naturally preserve this shift if the translator deliberately renders 2:6 as neuter (‘das, was…’) and 2:7 as masculine (‘der, welcher…’) — treat this alignment as a translation asset to be confirmed, not silently harmonized to one gender. Mandatory theologian review.
The Restrainer Neuter
Approved rendering: das, was zurückhält
Transliteration: das, was zurückhält
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: das Römische Reich (one historic identification proposal among several — must not be silently adopted as settled fact), die Verkündigung des Evangeliums (another historic proposal — same caution), der Heilige Geist (another historic proposal — same caution), die menschliche Obrigkeit/Regierung (another historic proposal — same caution)
Original: τὸ κατέχον
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
CRITICAL. 2 Thessalonians 2:6 (to katechon), one of the most historically debated exegetical questions in the NT. The text deliberately withholds the identity, addressing readers who already ‘know’ from Paul’s prior oral teaching — information not preserved for later readers. Teaching material must preserve this genuine, longstanding uncertainty rather than silently adopting one historic identification. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
High Risk Terms
Chosen Election
Approved rendering: erwählt
Transliteration: erwählt
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Election
Original: εἵλατο
Category: Salvation
NEW (concept inherited). 2 Thessalonians 2:13 (heilato, aorist middle of haireomai, ‘chose’), a different Greek verb root than the baseline’s eklegomai but an identical theological concept. Render as ‘erwählt’ to maintain terminological consistency with the established Erwählung doctrine; flag for theologian review per the existing election_and_predestination escalation rule (Ephesians 1:3-14) — the same Lutheran/Reformed confessional sensitivity applies here.
Church
Approved rendering: Gemeinde
Transliteration: Gemeinde
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: Kirche (institution-default)
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
HIGH RISK: Free church and Pietist tradition prefer ‘Gemeinde’ for the gathered local body, closer to NT ekklesia, over institution-default ‘Kirche.’ Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Thessalonians 1:1, addressing ‘the church of the Thessalonians’ (tē ekklēsia Thessalonikeōn) — a single, local, persecuted congregation, reinforcing the gathered-body sense over any tax-registered Landeskirche reading.
Election
Approved rendering: Erwählung
Transliteration: Erwählung
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
German Reformed (Calvinist) tradition historically debated double predestination more directly than Lutherans, who tend toward pastoral, comfort-oriented emphasis. Inherited from Romans package. 2 Thessalonians 2:13 (‘God chose you from the beginning for salvation,’ heilato hymas ho theos) uses a different Greek verb root (haireomai, not eklegomai) but identical theological concept; render as ‘erwählt’ for cross-book consistency, applying this same confessional-balance caution.
Everlasting Destruction
Approved rendering: ewiges Verderben
Transliteration: ewiges Verderben
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: äonisches Verderben (Konkordantes Neues Testament’s universalist-leaning rendering of aiōnios as temporally-limited ‘of the ages’ — forbidden; undermines the judgment’s permanence and this doctrine’s forensic finality)
Original: ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος
Category: God’s Righteous Judgment
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 1:9 (olethros aiōnios), ‘away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might’ (apo prosōpou tou kyriou). The phrase ‘vom Angesicht des Herrn’ must preserve the relational-exclusion sense, not a purely locational one. Flag for theologian review given ongoing scholarly debate (eternal conscious separation vs. annihilationist readings) — present the text’s own wording without importing a resolved systematic position.
Grace
Approved rendering: Gnade
Transliteration: Gnade
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: Barmherzigkeit, Wohlwollen
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Luther’s ‘sola gratia’ (Gnade allein) is a Reformation cornerstone. Catholic Einheitsübersetzung uses the same word but ties it more to sacramental means of grace (Gnadenmittel); must render as unmerited and apart from any human or ecclesial cooperation. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in the letter’s opening greeting (2 Thessalonians 1:2, 12) and closing benediction (3:18), the standard Pauline letter-frame formula reused throughout this pipeline.
If Any Will Not Work
Approved rendering: Wer nicht arbeiten will, soll auch nicht essen
Transliteration: Wer nicht arbeiten will, soll auch nicht essen
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Original: εἴ τις οὐ θέλει ἐργάζεσθαι μηδὲ ἐσθιέτω
Category: Standing Firm in the Traditions
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 (ei tis ou thelei ergazesthai mēde esthietō), a proverb-like community rule addressing believers who had stopped working in eschatological over-excitement. DISTINCTIVE German historical-resonance risk: this exact standard Lutherbibel phrase was prominently quoted by Lenin and codified in Article 12 of the 1936 Soviet Constitution, circulating within Marxist-Leninist political culture including the German Democratic Republic (DDR), largely detached from its Pauline pastoral context. Mandatory explicit historical recontextualization required in all teaching material, particularly for readers formed in or descended from the former East Germany.
Love Of The Truth
Approved rendering: die Liebe zur Wahrheit
Transliteration: die Liebe zur Wahrheit
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: τὴν ἀγάπην τῆς ἀληθείας
Category: God’s Righteous Judgment
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:10 (tēn agapēn tēs alētheias). The doctrinal weight (a volitional rejection of truth precedes final deception, not simple lack of access) must be preserved in teaching commentary; genuine risk of moralizing this into simple ignorance rather than culpable rejection.
Parousia
Approved rendering: Wiederkunft / Ankunft
Transliteration: Wiederkunft / Ankunft
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: Parusie (opaque academic loanword, unfamiliar to this curriculum’s lay/mixed-literacy target audience), Gegenwart (Neue-Welt-Übersetzung/Jehovah’s Witness rendering implying an invisible presence since 1914 — forbidden, must never be used)
Original: παρουσία
Category: The Day of the Lord
NEW. The technical eschatological term for Christ’s visible, glorious return (2 Thessalonians 2:1, 8, 9; also, ironically, the lawless one’s counterfeit ‘coming,’ 2:9). No single German word captures both the Hellenistic ‘royal state arrival’ sense and bare ‘presence.’ Render as ‘Wiederkunft’ for Christ’s return generally (2:1) and pair with ‘Erscheinen’ in the stacked construction at 2:8 so the two are not collapsed into one word. Positive bridge: the German liturgical season ‘Advent’ derives from this word’s Latin gloss (adventus), a ready doctrinally correct associative anchor for teaching material.
Saints
Approved rendering: Heilige
Transliteration: die Heiligen
Doctrine: Sainthood
HIGH RISK: Catholic ‘die Heiligen’ (canonized saints) differs from the Lutheran/Reformed sense of all believers as ‘Heilige.’ Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Thessalonians 1:10 (‘when he comes … to be glorified in his saints,’ en tois hagiois autou) — must render with the corporate, all-believers sense, never implying a canonized-elite reading.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Rettung
Transliteration: Rettung
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Heil (Nazi-era contamination risk), Erlösung (more existential/liberation-flavored)
HIGH RISK, distinctly German: three partially overlapping words exist (Heil, Erlösung, Rettung); prefer ‘Rettung’ or ‘Erlösung’, flag case-by-case use of ‘Heil’ for reviewer judgment. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Thessalonians 2:10 (‘so that they be saved,’ eis to sōthēnai autous) and 2:13 (‘chose you … for salvation’); render ‘Rettung’ consistently in both.
Son Of Perdition
Approved rendering: der Sohn des Verderbens
Transliteration: der Sohn des Verderbens
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 (ho huios tēs apōleias), a Hebraic ‘son of X’ idiom meaning ‘one destined for destruction.’ Identical phrase describes Judas in John 17:12 — worth surfacing as an intertextual echo, not an identification. Risk lies in German readers reading ‘Sohn’ too literally as a father-son relationship rather than a description of destiny/character; brief gloss required on first occurrence.
The Lord Is Faithful
Approved rendering: treu ist der Herr
Transliteration: treu ist der Herr
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Original: πιστὸς ὁ κύριος
Category: Perseverance under Persecution
NEW (reuses established Herr). 2 Thessalonians 3:3 (pistos ho kyrios). Flag ‘vom Bösen’ (from the evil one / from evil) for native speaker review to confirm whether the personal (Satan) or impersonal (evil in general) reading is intended, paralleling the Lord’s Prayer’s own established ambiguity in this exact phrase (Matthew 6:13).
Working Of Satan
Approved rendering: das Wirken des Satans
Transliteration: das Wirken des Satans
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: κατ’ ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:9 (kat’ energeian tou Satana), establishes the lawless one as Satan’s own agent, his ‘coming’ a deliberate satanic parody of Christ’s parousia. ‘Wirken’ is theologically neutral in itself (used elsewhere of both divine and demonic activity); context must disambiguate rather than a word substitution, which would break the deliberate energeia/energeitai wordplay linking 2:7 and 2:9.
Medium Risk Terms
Admonish As Brother
Approved rendering: nicht als Feind, sondern als Bruder ermahnen
Transliteration: nicht als Feind, sondern als Bruder ermahnen
Doctrine: Church Discipline and Restoration
Original: μὴ ὡς ἐχθρὸν ἀλλὰ νουθετεῖτε ὡς ἀδελφόν
Category: Standing Firm in the Traditions
NEW (reuses established ermahnen). 2 Thessalonians 3:15 (mē hōs echthron alla noutheteite hōs adelphon), the restorative qualifier to the church-discipline instruction. This qualifier must never be dropped or softened in teaching material, consistent with the Matthew package’s existing restorative-discipline framing discipline.
Afflictions
Approved rendering: Bedrängnisse / Leiden
Transliteration: Bedrängnisse / Leiden
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Original: θλίψεις
Category: Perseverance under Persecution
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 1:4 (thlipseis), broader crushing pressure or hardship, from thlibō (literally of grapes/olives under a press). Broader than diōgmoi; keep distinct and paired, not merged.
Appearing Of His Coming
Approved rendering: das Erscheinen seiner Ankunft
Transliteration: das Erscheinen seiner Ankunft
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ἐπιφάνεια τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ
Category: The Day of the Lord
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:8 (epiphaneia tēs parousias autou), a deliberately stacked, doubly-emphatic construction. Preserve both nouns; do not collapse to a single word, since the redundancy itself is rhetorically purposeful, contrasting with the lawless one’s hidden, mysterious revealing.
Belief Of The Truth
Approved rendering: Glaube an die Wahrheit
Transliteration: Glaube an die Wahrheit
Doctrine: Faith
Original: πίστει ἀληθείας
Category: Faith
NEW (concept inherited). 2 Thessalonians 2:13 (pistei alētheias). Reuses the established Glaube vocabulary; echoes the truth vocabulary of 2:10 and 2:12 — surface this deliberate structural echo explicitly in teaching material.
Breath Of His Mouth
Approved rendering: der Hauch/Odem seines Mundes
Transliteration: der Hauch/Odem seines Mundes
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: der Geist seines Mundes (would wrongly suggest the capitalized Heiliger Geist already firmly established elsewhere in translation memory)
Original: τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:8 (tō pneumati tou stomatos autou), alluding to Isaiah 11:4’s messianic judgment imagery. Christ’s judgment is effortless, word-based; disambiguation from Heiliger Geist is essential on this occurrence.
Called
Approved rendering: berufen
Transliteration: berufen
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Context-sensitive: in 1:1 = called to apostleship; in 1:7 = called to be saints; in 8:28-30 = effectual calling to salvation. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Thessalonians 2:14 (‘to which he called you through our gospel’) as effectual calling to salvation and glory.
Calling
Approved rendering: Berufung
Transliteration: Berufung
Doctrine: Divine Calling
‘Berufung’ is also the everyday word for career/life calling and, distinctly, the legal term for a court appeal (Berufung einlegen) — a genuine German-specific homonym-collision risk requiring context to disambiguate. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Thessalonians 1:11 (‘that our God may make you worthy of his calling,’ axiōsē tēs klēseōs); reuse exactly, retaining the baseline’s collision caution.
Deceit Of Unrighteousness
Approved rendering: Verführung der Ungerechtigkeit
Transliteration: Verführung der Ungerechtigkeit
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας
Category: God’s Righteous Judgment
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:10 (apatē adikias), reuses the established Gerechtigkeit/ungerecht word-family. Keep the genitive relationship (deceit characterized by unrighteousness) rather than flattening to a simple adjective pairing.
Exalts Himself
Approved rendering: sich selbst erhöht / sich erhebt über
Transliteration: sich selbst erhöht / sich erhebt über
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ὑπεραιρόμενος
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:4 (hyperairomenos), direct self-deification, claiming a status above every so-called god or object of worship. Deliberate ironic contrast with the Philippians package’s ‘hoch erhöht’ (Christ’s Father-given exaltation, Philippians 2:9) — this is self-exaltation, the theological photographic negative of Christ’s exaltation; worth surfacing in teaching material.
Faith
Approved rendering: Glaube
Transliteration: Glaube
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: Weltanschauung
Secularized usage now often treats ‘Glaube’ as generic worldview or spirituality (‘etwas Höheres glauben’). Must specify personal trust in Christ, not generic religiosity. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Thessalonians 1:3-4 (growing faith), 1:11 (work of faith), 2:13 (belief of the truth), 3:2 (‘not all have faith’).
Father
Approved rendering: Vater
Transliteration: Vater
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
God as personal Father. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Thessalonians 1:1-2 (‘God our Father’) and 2:16 (‘God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace’).
Gathering Together
Approved rendering: unser Versammeltwerden bei ihm
Transliteration: unser Versammeltwerden bei ihm
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: Versammlung (bare — the ordinary secular word for any assembly or meeting, e.g. a shareholders’ Versammlung, a Volksversammlung; carries no inherent eschatological content)
Original: ἐπισυναγωγή
Category: The Day of the Lord
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:1 (episynagōgē), the gathering of believers to Christ at his parousia; the only other NT occurrence is Hebrews 10:25. Must be glossed explicitly on first occurrence as the gathering of believers to Christ, never left as a bare generic-meeting noun.
Glory
Approved rendering: Herrlichkeit
Transliteration: Herrlichkeit
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
God’s radiant presence and honor. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Thessalonians 1:9 (‘from the glory of his might’), 1:10 and 1:12 (‘glorified,’ verherrlicht werden, verb form endoxasthē), and 2:14 (‘the obtaining of glory,’ das Erlangen der Herrlichkeit).
God
Approved rendering: Gott
Transliteration: Gott
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Sharp religious-literacy divide between former West and East Germany means ‘Gott’ is increasingly encountered as cultural-historical vocabulary rather than a live claim. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs throughout 2 Thessalonians (1:1-2, 1:5-8, 1:11-12, 2:4, 2:11, 2:13, 2:16, 3:5).
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Heiliger Geist
Transliteration: Heiliger Geist
Doctrine: Sanctification
The personal third Person of the Trinity; no competing deity-concept risk in German culture. Inherited from Romans package. Implicit as the agent of ‘Heiligung durch den Geist’ in 2 Thessalonians 2:13 (‘sanctification of the Spirit,’ hagiasmos pneumatos); confirm the capitalized, personal-Spirit agency reading is clear on review, distinct from a bare human-spirit reading of ‘pneumatos.‘
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Reich Gottes
Transliteration: Reich Gottes
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Long-standing biblical German phrase since Luther; not perceived as problematic in religious context. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Thessalonians 1:5 (‘that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering’); reuse exactly.
Note That Man
Approved rendering: merkt euch … habt keinen Umgang mit ihm
Transliteration: merkt euch … habt keinen Umgang mit ihm
Doctrine: Church Discipline and Restoration
Original: σημειοῦσθε … μὴ συναναμίγνυσθαι
Category: Standing Firm in the Traditions
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 3:14 (sēmeiousthe … mē synanamignysthai), church-discipline instruction to mark and withdraw social association so the disobedient brother may be ashamed and restored. Parallels the Matthew package’s established church_discipline_and_forgiveness doctrine (18:15-17); the restorative qualifier at 3:15 must never be dropped or softened.
Obey The Gospel
Approved rendering: dem Evangelium nicht gehorchen / dem Evangelium gehorchen
Transliteration: dem Evangelium nicht gehorchen / dem Evangelium gehorchen
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: Gehorsam des Glaubens (the established baseline phrase for hypakoē pisteōs, Romans 1:5/16:26 — a related but textually distinct phrase; must not silently substitute one for the other)
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 1:8 (hypakouousin tō euangeliō, ‘those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ’), grounds for the righteous-judgment verdict of 1:5-10 alongside not-knowing-God. Distinct Greek construction from the baseline’s established ‘Gehorsam des Glaubens’ (hypakoē pisteōs); the obedience in view here is the initial responsive belief/submission to gospel proclamation, whose absence brings judgment — not the ongoing fruit-of-faith obedience of the Romans doctrine. Keep the two phrases distinguishable in teaching commentary.
Obtaining Of Glory
Approved rendering: das Erlangen der Herrlichkeit
Transliteration: das Erlangen der Herrlichkeit
Doctrine: Glory of Christ
Original: περιποίησιν δόξης
Category: God’s Righteous Judgment
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:14 (peripoiēsin doxēs), the stated purpose of the effectual calling — that believers might come to possess Christ’s glory. Reuses the established Herrlichkeit word-family.
Persecutions
Approved rendering: Verfolgungen
Transliteration: Verfolgungen
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Original: διωγμοί
Category: Perseverance under Persecution
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 1:4 (diōgmoi), active, hostile pursuit specifically because of faith. Keep paired with ‘Bedrängnisse/Leiden’ (afflictions) as two distinct named realities, never collapsed into a single generic word for suffering.
Perseverance Endurance
Approved rendering: Standhaftigkeit / Ausharren
Transliteration: Standhaftigkeit / Ausharren
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Rejected alternatives: Geduld (suggests passive waiting, e.g. waiting in a queue or for a bus, rather than active endurance under active hostility), Beharrlichkeit (too neutral/amoral in register — used equally of persistence in a bad habit)
Original: ὑπομονή
Category: Perseverance under Persecution
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 1:4 (hypomonē); cf. 3:5’s ‘steadfastness of Christ.’ Active, patient perseverance specifically under trial or affliction, not passive resignation. ‘Standhaftigkeit’ is primary; ‘Ausharren’ is an acceptable secondary register variant. ‘Geduld’ is forbidden as the primary rendering throughout this letter.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: Kraft Gottes
Transliteration: Kraft Gottes
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Sovereign, saving capability. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Thessalonians 1:11 (‘every work of faith with power,’ ergon pisteōs en dynamei); genitive order ‘Werk des Glaubens in/mit Kraft’ must preserve faith-produces-work sequence, guarding against Werkgerechtigkeit.
Proclaims Himself God
Approved rendering: sich als Gott ausgibt / darstellt
Transliteration: sich als Gott ausgibt / darstellt
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ἀποδεικνύντα
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:4 (apodeiknynta), formal, official-demonstration connotation, counterfeiting legitimate divine self-demonstration (cf. Acts 2:22). The ironic parallel should be preserved in teaching commentary, not folded into the base translation.
Sanctification Of The Spirit
Approved rendering: Heiligung durch den Geist
Transliteration: Heiligung durch den Geist
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιασμὸς πνεύματος
Category: Sanctification
NEW (concept inherited). 2 Thessalonians 2:13 (hagiasmos pneumatos). Reuses the established Heiligung exactly; ‘pneumatos’ likely denotes the Holy Spirit’s sanctifying agency (genitive of agency) rather than the human spirit — confirm the agency reading is clear on native speaker review.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: Heiligung
Transliteration: Heiligung
Doctrine: Sanctification
The Spirit’s ongoing work of making believers holy. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Thessalonians 2:13 as ‘Heiligung durch den Geist’ (hagiasmos pneumatos) — the means by which the believer’s election is realized in experience.
Satan
Approved rendering: Satan
Transliteration: Satan
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: der Böse (reserved for its own established, separately-flagged use in the Lord’s Prayer/3:3’s ‘vom Bösen’; must not substitute for the proper name ‘Satan’ at 2:9, to keep the lawless-one/Satan distinction fully unambiguous)
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:9 (Satanas), a fully naturalized proper name in German, as in every other book in this pipeline. No paraphrase is appropriate; transliteration only. Fencing rule: never fold into ‘der Böse’ within this passage’s three carefully distinguished figures (the man of lawlessness, the adversary-title, and Satan who empowers him).
Stand Firm
Approved rendering: steht fest
Transliteration: steht fest
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Original: στήκετε
Category: Standing Firm in the Traditions
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 (stēkete), the direct imperative response to the preceding assurance of election and calling. Matches the Galatians package’s freedom_in_christ doctrine’s own ‘stand firm’ language (Galatians 5:1); reuse this exact German verb to reinforce the cross-book terminological link of standing firm under pressure.
Steadfastness Of Christ
Approved rendering: die Standhaftigkeit Christi
Transliteration: die Standhaftigkeit Christi
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Original: ὑπομονὴν τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Perseverance under Persecution
NEW (reuses hypomonē vocabulary from 1:4). 2 Thessalonians 3:5 (hypomonēn tou Christou), a genuinely ambiguous genitive: either Christ’s own steadfastness as an example, or steadfast waiting for Christ. Preserve the ambiguity; note both senses in teaching material rather than flattening to one.
The Adversary
Approved rendering: der Widersacher
Transliteration: der Widersacher
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ὁ ἀντικείμενος
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:4 (ho antikeimenos), ‘the one opposing,’ functioning almost as a title. Shared German vocabulary with Satan/the devil elsewhere (e.g. 1 Peter 5:8) — theologically apt here (the man of lawlessness as Satan’s own instrument, per 2:9) and should be preserved rather than flattened to a generic phrase.
Token In Every Epistle
Approved rendering: das Erkennungszeichen in jedem Brief
Transliteration: das Erkennungszeichen in jedem Brief
Doctrine: Apostolic Authority and Letter Authentication
Original: τὸ σημεῖον ἐν πάσῃ ἐπιστολῇ
Category: Standing Firm in the Traditions
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 3:17 (to sēmeion en pasē epistolē), Paul’s personal handwriting as an anti-forgery authentication device, directly resolving the letter-forgery concern raised at 2:2. Cross-reference explicitly in teaching material back to 2:2’s forgery anxiety.
Took Pleasure In Unrighteousness
Approved rendering: Gefallen an der Ungerechtigkeit hatten
Transliteration: Gefallen an der Ungerechtigkeit hatten
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: die Ungerechtigkeit hingenommen haben (too weak — merely tolerated/accepted, understates the willful delight the Greek conveys)
Original: εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ
Category: God’s Righteous Judgment
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:12 (eudokēsantes tē adikia); eudokeō elsewhere describes the Father’s delight in the Son (Matthew 3:17), an ironic counterfeit-echo. Reinforces that condemnation follows genuine, willing delight in evil, not mere unfortunate ignorance.
Walking Disorderly
Approved rendering: unordentlich wandeln
Transliteration: unordentlich wandeln
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Original: ἀτάκτως
Category: Standing Firm in the Traditions
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 11 (ataktōs), a military ‘out of formation’ metaphor applied to believers refusing to work while awaiting the parousia. ‘Nicht der Überlieferung gemäß’ must reuse the exact ‘Überlieferung’ rendering established at 2:15 to keep the doctrinal link visible.
Low Risk Terms
Appointed Time
Approved rendering: seine Zeit / zur rechten Zeit
Transliteration: seine Zeit / zur rechten Zeit
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: καιρός
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:6 (kairos), the qualitatively significant, divinely-appointed time, distinct from chronos. Reinforces the established Vorsehung (providence) doctrine.
Busybodies
Approved rendering: sich in alles einmischen, statt zu arbeiten
Transliteration: sich in alles einmischen, statt zu arbeiten
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Original: περιεργαζομένους
Category: Standing Firm in the Traditions
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 3:11 (periergazomenous), a deliberate Greek wordplay (ergazomai/periergazomai — ‘not working but working-around’) with no natural German equivalent preserving both sound and sense. Flag as a translation-craft note (wordplay loss), not a theological risk — the doctrinal content survives intact.
Deceive Utterly
Approved rendering: gänzlich täuschen / hinters Licht führen
Transliteration: gänzlich täuschen / hinters Licht führen
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ἐξαπατήσῃ
Category: The Man of Lawlessness
