This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified across the whole Book of Numbers (chapters 1–36), with primary emphasis on the core passage, Numbers 21:4-9. Terms already fixed in the baseline translation_memory.json are marked [BASELINE — reuse exactly] and are not to be re-translated or paraphrased. New terms are proposed for addition to translation memory at the risk tier indicated, consistent with the escalation and review-routing conventions established in doctrine_risk_registry.json.

Note on German-specific risk clustering: Numbers produces an unusually high concentration of culturally (rather than only theologically) loaded German-specific risk terms not paralleled elsewhere in this pipeline’s baseline: Volkszählung (census, Nazi-era registration/1983 privacy ruling), Lager (camp, Holocaust association), Rache (vengeance, illegitimate-vendetta connotation), and Freistädte/Zufluchtsstädte (cities of refuge, contemporary Asylrecht resonance — here a positive bridge). These should be flagged in Phase 2 with the same reviewer-sign-off discipline the baseline already applies to Heil and Lager-adjacent terms.

Curse Of The Law

Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose
Inherited from Romans/Galatians package. Judicial verdict, never a folk-magic curse. NUMBERS USAGE: the underlying Fluch-root vocabulary is reused for Balak’s attempted cursing of Israel (chs. 22-24, see new term ‘curse’ below); ensure exposition never implies cursing is an independent, effective spiritual technology that could succeed against God’s will — the entire Balaam narrative’s point is that it cannot.
Son Of Man Ransom

Inherited from Matthew package. Concrete commercial-legal atonement metaphor (Matthew 20:28). NUMBERS USAGE: the same commercial-legal ‘Lösegeld’ register is reused exactly for the firstborn redemption price of Numbers 3:46-51 (see new term ‘redemption_money’ below) — a literal five-shekel payment, kept concrete and never abstracted into a vague atonement gloss.
Moses

Risk is Critical not for lexical difficulty (the German form ‘Mose’ is stable and universal) but for doctrinal weight: Numbers presents Moses simultaneously as the book’s supreme type of faithful intercession (chs. 11, 14, 21) and as an object of the same unbelief-judgment applied to the wider people (ch. 20) — this double role must be preserved without softening either pole. Always use ‘Mose’, never ‘Moses’.
Fiery Serpents

Numbers 21:6. Lexically correct and standard (Luther), but Critical risk because German ‘die Schlange’ carries a fixed, unavoidable association with the Genesis 3 tempter (also rendered ‘Schlange’ in Luther’s Genesis). The passage’s entire theological point — God transforming the instrument of judgment into the sign of healing — depends on readers recognizing this same troubling word doing double duty. This collision IS the doctrine, not a translation flaw; mandatory theologian framing required for every occurrence.

Luther’s ‘eherne Schlange’ is the historic, liturgically and artistically established rendering (centuries of German devotional art depicting this scene as a type of the cross) and must be retained over a flatter modern ‘Bronzeschlange’/‘Kupferschlange’. The Hebrew wordplay nachash/nechoshet (serpent/bronze) is untranslatable into German — flag in a translator’s note rather than silently losing it. Direct OT anchor for the Critical John 3:14-15 typology.
