Core Glossary
08 — Core Glossary: Hosea (English → German)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, across the entire book of Hosea (chapters 1-14), with formal risk-tier assignments consistent with the baseline bible_term_registry.json and doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions (Critical / High / Medium / Low). Terms already fixed in the baseline translation_memory.json are marked [BASELINE REUSE] and must be rendered exactly as recorded there; no alternative may be substituted. New terms specific to Hosea are marked [NEW] and are proposed here for addition to translation memory, pending theologian sign-off per the baseline’s escalation protocol for Critical/High risk items.
Important note on original language: Hosea’s original language is Biblical Hebrew, not Koine Greek (see correction note in 07_semantic_analysis.md). The “Original” column below therefore cites Hebrew (with occasional LXX Greek noted where a New Testament citation depends on the Greek text).
Divine Name and Titles
| Term | Original | Translit. | Category | Risk | German Term | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LORD (YHWH) | יהוה | YHWH | God | Critical [BASELINE-ADJACENT] | HERR (small capitals, per Lutherbibel/Einheitsübersetzung convention) | Reuses the baseline’s Herr rendering for κύριος but requires the German-Bible-standard small-capital typographic distinction from ordinary “Herr.” Occurs ~45x in Hosea — far higher density than the NT epistolary material already covered. Losing the typographic cue in any non-typeset format collapses the covenant name into the ordinary word for “lord/master.” Mandatory reviewer note on every occurrence in non-typeset teaching material. |
| God | אֱלֹהִים | Elohim | God | Medium [BASELINE REUSE] | Gott | Direct reuse of baseline term. |
| Most High | עֶלְיוֹן | Elyon | God | Medium [NEW] | der Höchste | Divine title emphasizing transcendence; low ambiguity risk in German. Hosea 11:7. |
| the Holy One | קָדוֹשׁ | qadosh | God/Christology-adjacent | Critical [BASELINE REUSE — extended use] | der Heilige | Direct extension of baseline’s heilig term to a divine title. Must retain both transcendent “set-apartness” and immediate “in your midst” presence. Hosea 11:9. |
| I am God and not a man | כִּי אֵל אָנֹכִי וְלֹא־אִישׁ | ki El anokhi ve-lo ish | Doctrine of God | Critical [NEW] | denn ich bin Gott und nicht ein Mensch | The theological hinge of Hosea 11:9; grounds divine covenant faithfulness in God’s unchanging nature, not fickle human emotion. Structurally parallel to (not identical with) the baseline’s providence doctrine. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence. |
Marriage-Metaphor and Covenant-Breaking Vocabulary
| Term | Original | Translit. | Category | Risk | German Term | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| whoredom / harlotry | זְנוּנִים / זְנוּת | zenunim / zenut | Marriage Metaphor | Critical [NEW] | Hurerei | Deliberately crude, concrete covenant-breaking metaphor; recurs chs. 1, 2, 4. Must not be softened into vague “unfaithfulness.” Never moralized against Gomer as an isolated individual apart from the national-metaphor referent. |
| adultery | נַאֲפוּפִים (cf. root נאף) | naʾaph | Marriage Metaphor | Critical [NEW] | Ehebruch | The specific marital-covenant-breaking act underlying the whole book’s central metaphor; ch. 2-3. |
| Baal (the god / “my husband-master”) | בַּעַל / בְּעָלִים | Baʿal / Beʿalim | Idolatry | Critical [NEW] | Baal / die Baale | Keep transliterated proper name; never generalize to “idol.” Central to the untranslatable baʿali/ishi wordplay at 2:16-17. |
| the Baal/husband wordplay | בַּעְלִי / אִישִׁי | baʿali / ishi | Marriage Metaphor + Idolatry | Critical, untranslatable pun [NEW] | “mein Baal” / “mein Mann” | Requires mandatory explanatory footnote in all teaching material; German has no single word covering both “husband” and the god’s proper name. See 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch. 2. |
| idols / idol-images | עֲצַבִּים | ʿatsabbim | Idolatry | Medium [NEW] | Götzenbilder | Concrete cult objects; standard Lutherbibel vocabulary. |
| golden calf / calf-idols | עֵגֶל / עֵגְלֵי שֹׁמְרוֹן | ʿegel / ʿeglei Shomron | Idolatry | Medium [NEW] | Kalb / Kälber von Samaria | Deliberate Exodus 32 echo; ch. 8, 10, 13. |
| betroth | אֵרַשְׂתִּיךְ | ʾerastikh | Marriage Metaphor / Covenant | High [NEW] | verloben | Formal, binding pre-marital covenant term; Hosea 2:19-20’s fourfold repetition is one of the OT’s densest covenant-vocabulary clusters. |
| to redeem / to buy back | קָנָה | qanah | Redemption | High [NEW] | kaufen / erkaufen | Concrete commercial-legal redemption metaphor, ch. 3; consistent with baseline discipline (cf. der Schuldschein, Lösegeld) of keeping atonement metaphors concrete. |
Covenant Loyalty, Compassion, and Steadfast Love
| Term | Original | Translit. | Category | Risk | German Term | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| steadfast love / covenant loyalty (chesed) | חֶסֶד | chesed | God’s Steadfast Love | Critical [NEW — highest-priority lexical decision in this curriculum] | Güte | The central OT term for the doctrine “God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness.” Occurs 2:19, 4:1, 6:4, 6:6, 10:12, 12:6. Must not default to Gnade (already reserved in baseline for χάρις/unmerited NT grace) without an explicit cross-doctrinal note — conflating the two flattens chesed’s distinctly covenantal, mutual-loyalty-bound character into the NT’s unilateral, merit-free concept. Also note the everyday-German collision risk: Güte commonly means generic “kindness” or product “quality/grade” (Gütesiegel), requiring context to keep the covenant-loyalty sense clear. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence, for consistency (especially Hosea 6:6, quoted by Jesus in Matthew 9:13 and 12:7). |
| compassion / mercy (racham/rachamim) | רַחֲמִים / נִחוּמִים | rachamim / nichumim | God’s Steadfast Love / Judgment-Compassion Tension | Critical [NEW] | Barmherzigkeit / Erbarmen | Distinct Hebrew root from chesed (etymologically related to “womb” — maternal-toned compassion). Central at 2:19 (paired with chesed) and climactically at 11:8 (“my compassion grows warm and tender”). Must retain visceral, felt-emotion register, not detached benevolence. |
| my heart recoils / turns over | נֶהְפַּךְ לִבִּי | nehpakh libi | Judgment and Compassion Held Together | Critical [NEW] | mein Herz kehrt sich in mir um | Hosea 11:8’s central statement of divine anguish; must not be softened to mere rhetorical device, nor overstated into a claim that God’s character changes. Mandatory theologian review. |
| I will love them freely | אֹהֲבֵם נְדָבָה | ohavem nedavah | God’s Steadfast Love | Critical [NEW] | ich will sie frei/aus freiem Willen lieben | Hosea 14:4’s climactic unmerited-love statement; useful OT-to-NT bridge concept for Gnade, without asserting lexical identity between the Hebrew nedavah root and Greek charis. |
Repentance and Restoration Vocabulary
| Term | Original | Translit. | Category | Risk | German Term | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| return / repent (shuv) | שׁוּב | shuv | The Call to Return and Repentance | Critical [NEW — programmatic book-wide term] | umkehren | Hosea’s single most important recurring verb (20+ occurrences); distinct from the NT’s metanoia (already Buße in the Matthew baseline extension) — preserves the concrete “turning/reversing direction” sense central to the marriage metaphor. Must render identically at every occurrence (chs. 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 14) for the book’s rhetorical structure to register as one unified, escalating appeal. |
| apostasy / backsliding (meshuvah) | מְשׂוּבָה | meshuvah | The Call to Return and Repentance | High [NEW] | Abwendung / Abfall | Built on the same Hebrew root as shuv — the tragic wordplay (turning-away as the mirror of turning-back) should be surfaced in teaching material even though German lacks a matching word-family. Hosea 11:7, resolved at 14:4. |
| to heal (rapha) | רָפָא | rapha | The Call to Return and Repentance / Steadfast Love | High [NEW] | heilen | Distinct from Rettung (salvation) and Erlösung (redemption); concrete restoration-from-brokenness sense. Ties 11:3 to its resolution at 14:4 (“I will heal their apostasy”) — render consistently across both. |
| knowledge of God (daʿat Elohim) | דַּעַת אֱלֹהִים | daʿat Elohim | Spiritual Adultery as Covenant Breaking | Critical [NEW] | Erkenntnis Gottes | Relational, covenantal “knowing,” not intellectual/propositional knowledge. Ch. 4’s foundational indictment. Must not collapse into a merely doctrinal-informational sense (live risk given German academic theology’s historical-critical tradition). |
Names with Built-in Theological Meaning
| Term | Original | Translit. | Category | Risk | German Term | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jezreel | יִזְרְעֶאל | Yizreʿel | Marriage Metaphor / Judgment-Restoration | Critical [NEW] | Jesreel (“Gott zerstreut” / “Gott sät”) | Double meaning (judgment-scattering at 1:4, restoration-sowing at 1:11 and 2:22-23) must be surfaced explicitly, not left as a bare proper noun. |
| Lo-Ruhamah (“Not Pitied”) | לֹא רֻחָמָה | Lo Ruchamah | Judgment and Compassion Held Together | Critical [NEW] | Lo-Ruhama, “Nicht erbarmt” | Must be glossed with its meaning; reversed at 2:23. Shares the racham root with 11:8. |
| Lo-Ammi (“Not My People”) | לֹא עַמִּי | Lo Ammi | Covenant Breaking | Critical [NEW] | Lo-Ammi, “Nicht mein Volk” | Direct negation of the Exodus 6:7 covenant formula; quoted by Paul in Romans 9:25-26 — cross-reference flag for any future Romans-adjacent material. |
| Gomer | גֹּמֶר | Gomer | Marriage Metaphor | Low [NEW] | Gomer | Proper noun; brief narrative gloss recommended. |
| Ephraim | אֶפְרַיִם | Ephrayim | Covenant identity | Medium [NEW] | Ephraim | Synecdoche for the whole Northern Kingdom; clarify on first occurrence per chapter. |
| Admah | אַדְמָה | Admah | Judgment imagery | Low [NEW] | Adma | Genesis 19 cross-reference gloss recommended. |
| Beth-Aven (mocking Bethel) | בֵּית אָוֶן | Beit-Aven | Idolatry | Medium [NEW] | Beth-Awen | Ironic wordplay on Bethel (“House of God” → “House of Wickedness”); brief gloss recommended. |
Covenant, Sonship, and Calling Vocabulary (Baseline Cross-References)
| Term | Original | Translit. | Category | Risk | German Term | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Israel | יִשְׂרָאֵל | Yisraʾel | Covenant | Medium [BASELINE REUSE] | Israel | Direct reuse; note the baseline’s existing caution re: modern nation-state conflation is even more pastorally relevant here given Hosea’s specific Northern-Kingdom historical setting (distinct from, though related to, the exilic/post-exilic Israel discussed in Romans 9-11). |
| covenant | בְּרִית | berit | Covenant Breaking | Medium [BASELINE REUSE] | Bund | Direct reuse. Ch. 6:7’s “like Adam they transgressed the covenant” — note the genuine textual/translation ambiguity (Adam as person vs. place name); flag transparently, do not silently resolve. |
| called (calling my son out of Egypt) | קָרָא | qara | Divine Calling (Exodus sense) | High [BASELINE REUSE — sense-disambiguation required] | rief / berufen | Reuses baseline’s berufen/Berufung doctrine, but this is the corporate-historical Exodus-deliverance sense, distinct from the salvific “effectual calling” sense of Romans 8:28-30. Disambiguate explicitly wherever taught. Hosea 11:1. |
| my son | בְּנִי | beni | Sonship (typological) | Critical [NEW, with mandatory baseline cross-reference] | mein Sohn | Hosea 11:1, quoted typologically in Matthew 2:15 of the infant Jesus. Categorically distinct from the baseline’s Sohn Gottes (eternal, unique, co-equal divine Sonship) — must not be flattened into a direct identity claim without explicit typological bridging (corporate Israel → faithful Messiah). Mandatory theologian framing note. |
| glory (kavod) | כָּבוד | kavod | National honor (not divine glory in this context) | Medium [BASELINE REUSE — sense-disambiguation required] | Herrlichkeit | Reuses baseline’s Herrlichkeit term (established for God’s own glory) but here applied to Israel’s forfeited national honor (9:11) — disambiguate the referent explicitly. |
| the Most High / God | עֶלְיוֹן / אֱלֹהִים | Elyon / Elohim | God | Medium [BASELINE REUSE] | der Höchste / Gott | Direct reuse. |
Judgment and Sowing/Reaping Vocabulary
| Term | Original | Translit. | Category | Risk | German Term | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| they sow the wind, reap the whirlwind | רוּחַ יִזְרָעוּ…וְסוּפָתָה יִקְצֹרוּ | ruach yizraʿu…sufatah yiktzoru | Judgment | Critical [BASELINE REUSE, cross-reference] | Wind säen…Sturm ernten | Directly reuses the baseline’s established sowing_and_reaping (säen/ernten) term-pair from Galatians 6:7-8. Preserve the intensified, disproportionate contrast (wind → whirlwind) rather than flattening to the milder German harvest-proverb parallel. |
| the fierceness of my anger | חֲרוֹן אַף | charon af | Judgment and Compassion Held Together | Critical [NEW] | die Glut meines Zorns | Must preserve both the reality of divine wrath and its self-imposed restraint (11:9) — guard against both a soft-pedaling universalist misreading and a purely punitive misreading. |
| like a lion | כְּמוֹ־שַׁחַל | kemo-shachal | Judgment and Compassion Held Together | High [NEW] | wie ein Löwe | Jarring reversal of the tender parental imagery of Hosea 11; do not soften — the tension with 11:1-9 is the theological point (13:7-8). |
| sword | חֶרֶב | cherev | Judgment | Medium [NEW] | Schwert | Concrete historical-military referent (11:6); do not spiritualize away. |
| days of punishment/visitation | יְמֵי הַפְּקֻדָּה | yemei ha-pekudah | Judgment | Medium [NEW] | Tage der Heimsuchung / Tage der Bestrafung | Root pqd carries dual visitation/punishment sense; disambiguate from positive-visitation contexts elsewhere in Scripture. |
Redemption-from-Death Vocabulary (Cross-Testamental Bridge)
| Term | Original | Translit. | Category | Risk | German Term | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| I will ransom them from Death / O Death, where are your plagues? | אֶגְאָלֵם מִמָּוֶת… אַיֶּה דְבָרֶיךָ מָוֶת | eʾgʾalem mi-mavet… ayeh devarekha Mavet | Redemption | Critical [NEW] | ich will sie erlösen vom Tode… Tod, wo sind deine Plagen? | Hosea 13:14, quoted by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:55 as a resurrection-victory taunt-song. Coordinate with baseline’s Erlösung alternative-rendering note under salvation. Flag the genuine Hebrew exegetical/textual debate (promise vs. further threat) transparently. |
Restoration and Blessing Imagery
| Term | Original | Translit. | Category | Risk | German Term | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| like the dew / like the lily / like Lebanon | כַּטַּל / כַּשּׁוֹשַׁנָּה / כַּלְּבָנוֹן | ka-tal / ka-shoshanah / ka-Levanon | Restoration | Low [NEW] | wie der Tau / wie die Lilie / wie der Libanon | Concrete, positive restoration-blessing cluster (14:5-7); keep imagery specific rather than flattened to generic “blessing” language. |
| a cake not turned | עֻגָה בְּלִי הֲפוּכָה | ʿugah beli hafuchah | Instability/Judgment (minor image) | Low [NEW] | ein Kuchen, der nicht gewendet wird | Concrete domestic simile (7:8); minor cultural-explanation note only. |
| a silly dove | יוֹנָה פוֹתָה | yonah fotah | Instability (minor image) | Low [NEW] | eine törichte Taube | Concrete simile (7:11); no significant theological risk. |
| a luxuriant vine | גֶּפֶן בּוֹקֵק | gefen boqeq | Idolatry (agricultural metaphor) | Medium [NEW] | ein wuchernder Weinstock | Useful contrastive teaching bridge to John 15:1,5’s “true vine,” though not requiring identical lexical rendering (10:1). |
Chapters Introducing No New Load-Bearing Theological Vocabulary
Per the full-book-coverage mandate, the following is stated explicitly rather than silently omitted:
- Chapter 11, verses 10-11 (concluding the core-passage chapter): reuse already-established shuv (“return”) vocabulary and restoration imagery; no additional new terms beyond those catalogued in the verse-by-verse treatment of 11:1-9 above.
- Chapter 7 (beyond the two minor domestic similes catalogued above): continues the established shuv (“return,” 7:10, 7:16) and zenut/idolatry vocabulary from chapters 1-5 without introducing new doctrinal terms.
All other chapters (1-6, 8-10, 12-14) each contribute at least one new load-bearing term, catalogued above and in 07_semantic_analysis.md.
Risk-Tier Summary

|---|---|---|
| Critical | 21 | Mandatory human theologian review, every occurrence |
| High | 8 | Mandatory human theologian review |
| Medium | 14 | Native speaker review recommended |
| Low | 8 | Automated review sufficient |
Total new terms proposed for translation memory: 43 (pending theologian sign-off, per the baseline’s escalation protocol for Critical/High risk items, before Phase 2 processing begins).
Baseline terms reused exactly (no new entry required): Israel, Bund, Gott, Herr, heilig, Sohn Gottes (contrastively), Herrlichkeit, berufen/Berufung, Prophet, säen/ernten, Erlösung (alternative), Gnade (contrastively), Rettung (alternative), Buße (contrastively).
This glossary supersedes no baseline entry; it extends the Romans/Galatians/Ephesians/Philippians/Colossians/Matthew/Mark/Luke/John translation memory for the Hosea curriculum. All Critical and High risk terms above require theologian sign-off before being written into translation_memory.json per the baseline’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.
Critical Risk Terms
Lord
Approved rendering: Herr
Transliteration: Herr
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Meister, Chef
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Retained here purely as a fencing anchor: this ‘Herr’ (kyrios/‘Mr.’) must never be confused with the small-capital HERR convention reserved for YHWH (see new entry yhwh_lord), a collision risk sharpened in Hosea by the book’s own baʿali/ishi ‘lord/husband’ wordplay (2,16-17).
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Sohn Gottes
Transliteration: Sohn Gottes
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Retained strictly as a fencing anchor: must never be conflated with Hosea 11,1’s corporate ‘mein Sohn’ (see new entry son_my_son). Mandatory theologian framing note wherever Hosea 11,1 and its typological citation at Matthew 2,15 are taught together, so that corporate-Israel sonship and Christ’s eternal, unique, co-equal divine Sonship are never presented as a direct one-to-one identity claim.
Sowing And Reaping
Approved rendering: säen / ernten
Transliteration: säen / ernten
Doctrine: Bearing One Another’s Burdens
Inherited from Romans/Galatians package, unchanged. Directly reused and intensified at Hosea 8,7 (‘Wind säen… Sturm ernten’) — see new entry sowing_and_reaping_disproportionate for the additional intensification-specific fencing requirement unique to this occurrence.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Gerechtigkeit
Transliteration: Gerechtigkeit
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Tugend
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Hosea 2,19-20’s betrothal formula (‘in Gerechtigkeit und Recht… in Treue’) uses this term in a covenant-marital, not soteriological-forensic, sense — a related but distinct application of the same root concept. See new entries justice_mishpat and faithfulness_emunah for the accompanying betrothal vocabulary.
Yhwh Lord
Approved rendering: HERR
Transliteration: HERR
Doctrine: The Divine Name and Covenant Lordship
Rejected alternatives: Jehova (Neue-Welt-Übersetzung/Jehovah’s Witness rendering — never adopt), Herr (ordinary form, loses the covenant-name distinction)
Original: יהוה
Category: God
The covenant name YHWH, occurring ~45 times across Hosea. Render as small-capital HERR per Lutherbibel/Einheitsübersetzung convention, distinguishing it typographically from ordinary ‘Herr’ (kyrios/‘Mr.’) and from the NT Lordship confession (Romans 10,9). Mandatory reviewer note wherever small-capital typography cannot be preserved (audio script, plain text, subtitle). Never substitute ‘Jehova,’ the Jehovah’s Witness Neue-Welt-Übersetzung’s distinctive divine-name insertion (see analysis/05_translation_landscape.md §4.1).
Holy One
Approved rendering: der Heilige
Transliteration: der Heilige
Doctrine: Divine Transcendence Grounding Unchanging Covenant Faithfulness
Original: קָדוֹשׁ
Category: God
Hosea 11,9’s divine title (qadosh) extending the baseline’s ‘heilig’ doctrine. Must retain both poles simultaneously — transcendent otherness and immediate covenantal presence (‘in deiner Mitte,’ ‘in your midst’) — without either collapsing into the other.
God Not Man
Approved rendering: denn ich bin Gott und nicht ein Mensch
Transliteration: denn ich bin Gott und nicht ein Mensch
Doctrine: Divine Transcendence Grounding Unchanging Covenant Faithfulness
Original: כִּי אֵל אָנֹכִי וְלֹא־אִישׁ
Category: God
Hosea 11,9’s theological hinge: God’s covenant restraint and faithfulness are grounded in his own unchanging divine nature, not in changeable human emotion. Render with maximal clarity; no softening or paraphrase permitted. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence.
Whoredom
Approved rendering: Hurerei
Transliteration: Hurerei
Doctrine: Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Rejected alternatives: Untreue (too soft; erases the visceral, sexual-covenantal shock the Hebrew intends)
Original: זְנוּנִים / זְנוּת
Category: Marriage Metaphor
Zenunim/zenut: deliberately crude covenant-breaking metaphor recurring chs. 1, 2, 4, 5, 6. Must never be softened, and must never be moralized against Gomer as an individual apart from the metaphor’s national referent — a live risk given German devotional literature’s tendency toward biographical moralizing.
Adultery
Approved rendering: Ehebruch
Transliteration: Ehebruch
Doctrine: Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Original: נַאֲפוּפִים (root נאף)
Category: Marriage Metaphor
Naʾaph: the specific marital-covenant-breaking act (chs. 2-3; 4,2.13-14; 7,4), kept distinct from the broader systemic zenut/Hurerei.
Baal
Approved rendering: Baal / die Baale
Transliteration: Baal / die Baale
Doctrine: Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Rejected alternatives: Götze (generic idol — erases the specific historical referent and destroys the 2,16-17 wordplay)
Original: בַּעַל / בְּעָלִים
Category: Idolatry
Keep as the transliterated proper name of the Canaanite storm/fertility deity throughout. Central to the untranslatable baʿali/ishi wordplay — see new entry baal_husband_wordplay.
Baal Husband Wordplay
Approved rendering: “mein Baal” wird zu “mein Mann”
Transliteration: “mein Baal” wird zu “mein Mann”
Doctrine: Exclusive Worship of YHWH and the Baal Wordplay
Original: בַּעְלִי / אִישִׁי
Category: Marriage Metaphor
Hosea 2,16-17: an untranslatable pun — baʿal means both ‘husband/lord’ and the proper name of the god Baal. German has no single word covering both senses. Render literally with a MANDATORY explanatory footnote in every occurrence of teaching material: Israel must abandon language hearable as Baal-devotion even when nominally addressed to YHWH — the wordplay itself, not merely its content, is the exegetical point.
Jezreel
Approved rendering: Jesreel (“Gott zerstreut” / “Gott sät”)
Transliteration: Jesreel (“Gott zerstreut” / “Gott sät”)
Doctrine: The Symbolic Children and Their Covenant-Bearing Names
Original: יִזְרְעֶאל
Category: Covenant Names
Name of Hosea’s firstborn son (1,4), with a double meaning reversed across the book: judgment/scattering (1,4, recalling Jehu’s massacre, 2 Kings 9-10) and later restoration/sowing (1,11; 2,22-23). Both senses must be surfaced explicitly at their respective locations; never left as a bare transliteration.
Lo Ruhamah
Approved rendering: Lo-Ruhama (“Nicht erbarmt”)
Transliteration: Lo-Ruhama (“Nicht erbarmt”)
Doctrine: The Symbolic Children and Their Covenant-Bearing Names
Original: לֹא רֻחָמָה
Category: Covenant Names
Name of Hosea’s daughter (1,6), declaring the temporary withdrawal of God’s compassion; reversed at 2,23. Shares the racham root with the climactic compassion language of 11,8 — worth cross-referencing in teaching material.
Lo Ammi
Approved rendering: Lo-Ammi (“Nicht mein Volk”)
Transliteration: Lo-Ammi (“Nicht mein Volk”)
Doctrine: The Symbolic Children and Their Covenant-Bearing Names
Original: לֹא עַמִּי
Category: Covenant Names
Name of Hosea’s second son (1,9), negating the covenant formula ‘you are my people’ (Exodus 6,7); reversed at 1,10; 2,23. Quoted by Paul (Romans 9,25-26) — flag for cross-reference consistency with any future Romans-adjacent rendering of the covenant formula.
Steadfast Love
Approved rendering: Güte
Transliteration: Güte
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: Gnade (reserved for NT charis; would flatten chesed’s covenantal, mutual-loyalty-bound character), Treue (defaults to secular marital/employment fidelity register in everyday German)
Original: חֶסֶד
Category: Covenant Loyalty
Chesed (2,19; 4,1; 6,4; 6,6; 10,12; 12,6): the single highest-priority lexical decision in this curriculum. Watch the everyday-German collision with ‘Güte’ as generic kindness or product quality (Gütesiegel). Mandatory first-occurrence-per-unit gloss recommended: ‘Güte (hebr. chesed): Gottes bundestreue, unaufgebbare Liebe.’ Hosea 6,6 requires cross-document consistency given its NT citation (Matthew 9,13; 12,7) — see new entry chesed_not_sacrifice.
Compassion
Approved rendering: Barmherzigkeit / Erbarmen
Transliteration: Barmherzigkeit / Erbarmen
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
Original: רַחֲמִים / נִחוּמִים
Category: Covenant Loyalty
Rachamim/nichumim: visceral, maternal-toned compassion (etymologically ‘womb’), paired with chesed at 2,19 and climactically intensified at 11,8 (‘my compassion grows warm and tender’). Distinct root from chesed; must retain felt-emotion intensity, not a detached institutional-charity register (a risk given ‘Barmherzigkeit’s’ heavy use in German diakonia/Caritas vocabulary).
Heart Recoils
Approved rendering: mein Herz kehrt sich in mir um
Transliteration: mein Herz kehrt sich in mir um
Doctrine: Judgment and Compassion Held Together
Original: נֶהְפַּךְ לִבִּי
Category: Judgment and Compassion
Nehpakh libi (11,8): the book’s single most emotionally exposed statement of divine anguish. Must not be softened into rhetorical device, nor hardened into a claim of divine mutability. Mandatory theologian review.
Love Freely
Approved rendering: ich will sie frei und aus freiem Willen lieben
Transliteration: ich will sie frei und aus freiem Willen lieben
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: Gnade (would assert an unwarranted lexical identity between nedavah and NT charis)
Original: אֹהֲבֵם נְדָבָה
Category: God’s Steadfast Love
Ohavem nedavah (14,4): God’s climactic promise of entirely unearned, unprompted restorative love. Useful OT-to-NT bridge to Gnade for teaching purposes, WITHOUT asserting lexical or historical identity between the two vocabularies.
Fierceness Of Anger
Approved rendering: die Glut meines Zorns
Transliteration: die Glut meines Zorns
Doctrine: Judgment and Compassion Held Together
Original: חֲרוֹן אַף
Category: Judgment and Compassion
Charon af (11,9; cf. 8,5): idiom for fierce divine wrath. Must preserve both the reality of divine wrath (against a soft-pedaling misreading) and its self-imposed restraint in 11,9 (against a purely punitive misreading).
Return Repent
Approved rendering: umkehren
Transliteration: umkehren
Doctrine: The Call to Return and Repentance
Rejected alternatives: Buße (reserved for NT metanoia; would blend Hosea’s concrete turning-imagery with the confessionally contested NT vocabulary), sich bekehren / zurückkehren (inconsistent alternation would break the book-wide rhetorical unity)
Original: שׁוּב
Category: Call to Repentance
Shuv: Hosea’s single most important recurring verb (20+ occurrences: chs. 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 14). Must render IDENTICALLY at every occurrence for the book’s escalating covenant appeal to register as unified. Hosea 11,5 contains a deliberate double sense (literal geographic return to Egypt denied; covenantal return to YHWH refused) requiring an explicit teaching note.
Knowledge Of God
Approved rendering: Erkenntnis Gottes
Transliteration: Erkenntnis Gottes
Doctrine: The Knowledge of God as Relational Covenant Loyalty
Original: דַּעַת אֱלֹהִים
Category: Covenant Breaking
Daʿat Elohim (4,1.6; 6,6): relational, covenantal, experiential knowing, NOT primarily intellectual/propositional knowledge. Gloss on first occurrence per unit as ‘Beziehungswissen’ (relational knowing), distinguished from German academic theology’s historisch-kritische, informational sense.
Son My Son
Approved rendering: mein Sohn
Transliteration: mein Sohn
Doctrine: Corporate Sonship and Its Messianic Typology
Rejected alternatives: Sohn Gottes (reserved for Christ’s eternal, unique, co-equal divine Sonship — categorically different)
Original: בְּנִי
Category: Sonship (typological)
Beni (11,1): Israel as God’s covenant ‘son’ at its Exodus infancy, corporate rather than individual sonship. Quoted typologically of the infant Jesus (Matthew 2,15). Mandatory theologian framing note wherever taught alongside Matthew 2,15 to prevent flattening into a direct identity claim.
Sowing And Reaping Disproportionate
Approved rendering: Wind säen…Sturm ernten
Transliteration: Wind säen…Sturm ernten
Doctrine: Disproportionate Judgment: Sowing the Wind, Reaping the Whirlwind
Original: רוּחַ יִזְרָעוּ…וְסוּפָתָה יִקְצֹרוּ
Category: Judgment
Hosea 8,7: directly reuses the baseline’s säen/ernten term-pair (Galatians 6,7-8), which already requires God as the explicit accountability-subject. Here the added requirement is preserving the INTENSIFICATION (wind escalating to whirlwind, not a like-for-like harvest) rather than flattening to the milder German proverb (‘wie man sät, so erntet man’).
No God Besides Me
Approved rendering: es gibt keinen Gott außer mir
Transliteration: es gibt keinen Gott außer mir
Doctrine: Exclusive Monotheism as Covenant Foundation
Original: אֵין אֱלֹהִים בִּלְעָדַי
Category: Idolatry
Hosea 13,4: restates the first commandment’s exclusivity, grounding the book’s entire idolatry indictment. Structurally similar pastoral sensitivity to the baseline’s John 14,6 caution given Germany’s religious pluralism, though the historical referent here is OT covenant monotheism, not NT Christological exclusivity — keep the two doctrinally distinct.
Ransom From Death
Approved rendering: ich will sie erlösen vom Tode… Tod, wo sind deine Plagen?
Transliteration: ich will sie erlösen vom Tode… Tod, wo sind deine Plagen?
Doctrine: Ransom from Death
Original: אֶגְאָלֵם מִמָּוֶת… אַיֵּה דְבָרֶיךָ מָוֶת
Category: Redemption
Hosea 13,14, quoted by Paul as a resurrection-victory taunt-song (1 Korinther 15,55). Coordinate with the baseline’s Erlösung alternative-rendering note. The underlying Hebrew is genuinely disputed (promise vs. further threat: ‘Shall I ransom them from Death?… O Death, bring your plagues!’); disclose this exegetical debate transparently rather than silently resolving it.
Chesed Not Sacrifice
Approved rendering: Güte, nicht Schlachtopfer
Transliteration: Güte, nicht Schlachtopfer
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
Hosea 6,6, the book’s single most quoted verse in the NT (Matthew 9,13; 12,7, cited twice by Jesus against Pharisaic legalism). Must reuse the steadfast_love Güte rendering exactly for cross-document consistency with any future Matthew-package material. Never read as devaluing sacrifice/ritual as such — covenant loyalty is sacrifice’s necessary precondition and true substance.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: Gnade
Transliteration: Gnade
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: Barmherzigkeit, Wohlwollen
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Retained here strictly as a fencing anchor: Gnade (chi’aris) must NEVER be substituted for Hosea’s chesed (see new entry steadfast_love, rendered Güte) — related but non-identical OT/NT concepts. Any occurrence of ‘Gnade’ where the underlying Hebrew is chesed is an automatic validation failure requiring reviewer escalation.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Rettung
Transliteration: Rettung
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Heil (Nazi-era contamination risk), Erlösung (more existential/liberation-flavored)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Hosea’s healing/redemption vocabulary (rapha = heilen; qanah = kaufen/erkaufen; the 13,14 ransom = erlösen vom Tode) occupies an adjacent but distinct semantic field. ‘Heilen’ must never be silently expanded into a Heil-adjacent phrase — see new entry heal.
Repentance
Approved rendering: Buße
Transliteration: Buße
Doctrine: Repentance
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Retained strictly as a fencing anchor: Buße (metanoia) must NEVER be substituted for Hosea’s shuv (see new entry return_repent, rendered umkehren) — Hosea’s concrete ‘turning/reversing direction’ verb must stay visibly distinct from the NT’s confessionally contested Buße vocabulary.
Election
Approved rendering: Erwählung
Transliteration: Erwählung
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Useful background for Hosea 11,1’s corporate calling/election of Israel out of Egypt, though Hosea’s own vocabulary (qara) is rendered ‘rief’ rather than ‘Erwählung’ to keep the corporate-historical and soteriological senses distinguished — see new entry called_exodus_sense.
Providence
Approved rendering: Vorsehung
Transliteration: Vorsehung
Doctrine: Providence
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Structurally parallel to (though textually distinct from) Hosea 11,9’s doctrine of unchanging divine faithfulness grounded in God’s ontological difference from humanity — see new entry god_not_man. Useful cross-reference for reviewers handling both doctrines.
Law
Approved rendering: Gesetz
Transliteration: Gesetz
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Hosea’s torah vocabulary (4,6; 8,1.12) refers to God’s covenant instruction generally rather than the developed NT law/grace dialectic; render with the same fixed German term nonetheless for cross-curriculum consistency.
Betrothal
Approved rendering: verloben
Transliteration: verloben
Doctrine: The Marriage Metaphor for God and His People
Rejected alternatives: Verlobung im modernen, lockeren Sinn (too weak for the binding ancient covenant sense)
Original: אֵרַשְׂתִּיךְ
Category: Marriage Metaphor
ʾErastikh (2,19-20): formal, binding pre-marital covenant commitment, stronger than the modern casual German ‘Verlobung.’ The fourfold repetition (‘in Gerechtigkeit und Recht… in Güte und Erbarmen… in Treue’) is one of the OT’s densest covenant-vocabulary clusters; teaching material must supply the binding, unbreakable force explicitly.
Spirit Of Whoredom
Approved rendering: ein Geist der Hurerei
Transliteration: ein Geist der Hurerei
Doctrine: Political and Religious Corruption
Original: רוּחַ זְנוּנִים
Category: Idolatry
Ruach zenunim (4,12; 5,4): a pervasive internal disposition of idolatry, NOT the Holy Spirit (baseline Critical-risk ‘Heiliger Geist’). German’s mandatory noun capitalization removes any capitalization-based disambiguation cue; must disambiguate explicitly on first occurrence per teaching unit.
Like A Lion
Approved rendering: wie ein Löwe
Transliteration: wie ein Löwe
Doctrine: Judgment and Compassion Held Together
Original: כְּמוֹ־שַׁחַל
Category: Judgment and Compassion
Kemo-shachal (13,7-8): God pictured as a predatory lion pursuing Ephraim, a deliberately shocking reversal of 11,1-4’s tender parental imagery. Do not soften the ferocity; cross-reference explicitly with 11,1-9 so the tension is taught, not concealed.
Apostasy
Approved rendering: Abwendung / Abfall
Transliteration: Abwendung / Abfall
Doctrine: The Call to Return and Repentance
Original: מְשׂוּבָה
Category: Call to Repentance
Meshuvah (11,7; resolved 14,4): built on the same Hebrew root as shuv — the tragic wordplay of ‘turning’ describing entrenched turning-away. German has no matching root-family; a standing teaching note is recommended at both 11,7 and 14,4 to surface the pun the German lexicon cannot reproduce.
Heal
Approved rendering: heilen
Transliteration: heilen
Doctrine: The Healing of Apostasy
Rejected alternatives: Retten/Erlösen (distinct semantic field — salvation/redemption, not restoration-from-brokenness)
Original: רָפָא
Category: Call to Repentance
Rapha (11,3; 14,4): concrete restoration-from-brokenness, distinct from Rettung/Erlösung. Must render consistently across both occurrences so 14,4’s climactic resolution lands with full intertextual weight. Validation rule required: ‘heilen’ must never be silently expanded toward the avoided noun ‘Heil.‘
Called Exodus Sense
Approved rendering: rief
Transliteration: rief
Doctrine: Corporate Sonship and Its Messianic Typology
Rejected alternatives: berufen (reserved for the baseline’s soteriological effectual-calling sense)
Original: קָרָא
Category: Divine Calling
Qara (11,1): God’s sovereign summons of Israel out of Egyptian slavery. Corporate-historical, distinct from the salvific ‘effectual calling’ sense of Romans 8,28-30. Explicit sense-disambiguation note required wherever taught alongside baseline calling material.
Redeem Buy Back
Approved rendering: kaufen / erkaufen
Transliteration: kaufen / erkaufen
Doctrine: Redemption and Purchase as Restoration
Original: קָנָה
Category: Redemption
Qanah (3,2): Hosea ‘buys’ Gomer back for silver and barley — a concrete commercial-legal redemption metaphor, consistent with the baseline’s discipline (der Schuldschein, Lösegeld) of keeping such metaphors concrete rather than abstracted into vague forgiveness language.
Cords Of Love
Approved rendering: Bande der Liebe / Seile der Güte
Transliteration: Bande der Liebe / Seile der Güte
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
Original: חֶבְלֵי אָדָם / עֲבֹתוֹת אַהֲבָה
Category: God’s Steadfast Love
Chevlei adam/avotot ahavah (11,4): a deliberately mixed metaphor — God leads Israel like a farmer leading a draft animal, yet the cords are made of love, not force. Keep the harness image grounded (it feeds the following yoke image) while foregrounding tender bonding, not coercion.
Love Ahav
Approved rendering: lieben
Transliteration: lieben
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
ʾAhav (11,1, ‘I loved him’): not sentimental affection but God’s electing, initiating love — logically prior to and independent of Israel’s response (cf. Deuteronomy 7,7-8). Must not collapse into generic romantic sentiment.
Medium Risk Terms
Israel
Approved rendering: Israel
Transliteration: Israel
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Germany’s post-Holocaust Staatsräson makes biblical Israel prone to conflation with the modern nation-state. Hosea-specific extension: here ‘Israel’ refers primarily to the 8th-century-BC Northern Kingdom under Hosea’s ministry, distinct from the united-monarchy Israel of the Davidic-covenant material and from the exilic/post-exilic Israel of Romans 9-11. Every occurrence in Hosea teaching material should carry a brief historical-scope qualifier (‘das Nordreich Israel unter Hosea’) to prevent silent conflation of these three distinct referents.
God
Approved rendering: Gott
Transliteration: Gott
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: אֱלֹהִים
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Hosea-specific extension: Elohim is used throughout Hosea both of YHWH and, contextually, of the rival gods Israel pursues; disambiguate the referent explicitly wherever the identity of ‘God’ is itself contested, especially Hosea 13,4 (‘there is no God besides me’ — see new entry no_god_besides_me).
Holy
Approved rendering: heilig
Transliteration: heilig
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: rein
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Hosea-specific extension: extended to the divine title ‘der Heilige’ (qadosh) at Hosea 11,9 — see new entry holy_one.
Glory
Approved rendering: Herrlichkeit
Transliteration: Herrlichkeit
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Hosea-specific extension: the same word is also required at Hosea 9,11 for Ephraim’s forfeited national honor (kavod) — a distinct, non-divine referent that must be disambiguated explicitly; see new entry national_glory.
Called
Approved rendering: berufen
Transliteration: berufen
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Hosea-specific extension: Hosea 11,1’s qara (God’s Exodus-era summons of Israel) is a distinct corporate-historical sense rendered ‘rief,’ not ‘berufen’ — see new entry called_exodus_sense. Disambiguate explicitly wherever both senses are taught together.
Calling
Approved rendering: Berufung
Transliteration: Berufung
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Retained as contrastive background for Hosea 11,1’s called_exodus_sense entry; Hosea itself does not use this noun form directly.
Covenant
Approved rendering: Bund
Transliteration: Bund
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Reused for berit throughout Hosea (6,7; 8,1). Hosea 6,7’s ‘like Adam they transgressed the covenant’ carries a genuine, unresolved textual/translation ambiguity (Adam as the primal man vs. Adam as a place name, cf. Joshua 3,16) that must be flagged transparently in teaching material, never silently resolved — see new entry adam_covenant_transgression.
Sin
Approved rendering: Sünde
Transliteration: Sünde
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Hosea’s zenut/zenunim vocabulary (see new entry whoredom) names a specific, deliberately crude covenant-breaking subset of this broader doctrine; the baseline’s caution against colloquial trivialization of ‘Sünde’ applies equally here.
Most High
Approved rendering: der Höchste
Transliteration: der Höchste
Doctrine: The Divine Name and Covenant Lordship
Original: עֶלְיוֹן
Category: God
Divine title (Elyon) emphasizing transcendent supremacy; Hosea 11,7 uses it to underscore that even Israel’s cries to God’s majesty do not, in that verse’s stark judgment context, produce deliverance. Low ambiguity risk in German.
Idols
Approved rendering: Götzenbilder
Transliteration: Götzenbilder
Doctrine: Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Original: עֲצַבִּים
Category: Idolatry
ʿAtsabbim: carved/molded cult images (4,17; 8,4; 13,2; 14,8). Concrete physical referent, not abstract ‘false belief.‘
Calf Idols
Approved rendering: Kalb / Kälber von Samaria
Transliteration: Kalb / Kälber von Samaria
Doctrine: Covenant Curse and Historical Judgment
Original: עֵגֶל / עֵגְלֵי שֹׁמְרוֹן
Category: Idolatry
ʿEgel/ʿeglei Shomron (8,5-6; 10,5; 13,2): golden-calf-style cult images deliberately echoing the Exodus 32 apostasy. Brief cross-reference gloss recommended for readers with low OT narrative literacy.
National Glory
Approved rendering: Herrlichkeit
Transliteration: Herrlichkeit
Doctrine: Covenant Curse and Historical Judgment
Original: כָּבוֹד
Category: Judgment
Kavod (9,11): Ephraim’s forfeited national honor ‘flying away’ under judgment. Same German word as the baseline’s divine-glory ‘Herrlichkeit,’ but here applied to Israel’s national honor rather than to God’s own glory — disambiguate the referent explicitly.
Purchase Price
Approved rendering: Silber…und Gerste
Transliteration: Silber…und Gerste
Doctrine: Redemption and Purchase as Restoration
Original: כֶּסֶף…וְשֹׂעֲרִים
Category: Redemption
Kesef…u-seʿorim (3,2): the concrete, partly monetary and partly in-kind purchase price for Gomer. Keep specific; do not abstract into a vague ‘a price’ — the specificity underscores the degraded state from which she, and symbolically Israel, is redeemed.
Remain Mine
Approved rendering: du sollst mir bleiben
Transliteration: du sollst mir bleiben
Doctrine: Redemption and Purchase as Restoration
Original: תֵּשְׁבִי לִי
Category: Marriage Metaphor
Teshvi li (3,3): a period of exclusive, chastened devotion required of Gomer before full restoration, mirroring Israel’s coming exile before restoration; ties to the ‘days’ language of exile in 3,4-5.
Yoke
Approved rendering: Joch
Transliteration: Joch
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
Original: עֹל
Category: God’s Steadfast Love
ʿOl (11,4): concrete agricultural image; note the semantic reversal from Exodus ‘yoke of slavery’ language — here God himself EASES, rather than imposes, the yoke, a picture of covenant relief.
Taught To Walk
Approved rendering: lehrte laufen / führte an der Hand
Transliteration: lehrte laufen / führte an der Hand
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
Original: תִּרְגַּלְתִּי
Category: God’s Steadfast Love
Tirgalti (11,3): causative form, leading a toddler by the hand. Intensely tender parental image continuing 11,1’s ‘child’ image; keep warm and concrete, not clinical.
Sword
Approved rendering: Schwert
Transliteration: Schwert
Doctrine: Covenant Curse and Historical Judgment
Original: חֶרֶב
Category: Judgment
Cherev (11,6): the concrete instrument of the judgment announced in 11,5 — real historical military catastrophe (Assyrian conquest). Do not spiritualize away from this concrete referent.
Own Counsels
Approved rendering: eigene Ratschlüsse / eigene Pläne
Transliteration: eigene Ratschlüsse / eigene Pläne
Doctrine: Covenant Curse and Historical Judgment
Original: מוֹעֲצוֹת
Category: Judgment
Moʿatsot (11,6): Israel’s self-reliant, faithless political/religious scheming, the root cause bringing judgment upon itself.
Days Of Punishment
Approved rendering: Tage der Heimsuchung / Tage der Bestrafung
Transliteration: Tage der Heimsuchung / Tage der Bestrafung
Doctrine: Covenant Curse and Historical Judgment
Original: יְמֵי הַפְּקֻדָּה
Category: Judgment
Yemei ha-pekudah (9,7): a coming reckoning, judicial and almost military-administrative in tone. ‘Heimsuchung’ preserves the dual visitation/punishment sense well (cf. Luke 1,68) but must be disambiguated from any positive-visitation reading elsewhere in Scripture.
Pride Of Israel
Approved rendering: der Stolz Israels
Transliteration: der Stolz Israels
Doctrine: Political and Religious Corruption
Original: גְּאוֹן יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: Idolatry
Geʾon Yisraʾel (5,5; 7,10): Israel’s arrogant self-sufficiency, personified almost as a witness testifying against the nation.
Forgotten Maker
Approved rendering: er hat seinen Schöpfer vergessen
Transliteration: er hat seinen Schöpfer vergessen
Doctrine: Covenant Curse and Historical Judgment
Original: שָׁכַח עֹשֵׂהוּ
Category: Covenant Breaking
Shakhach ʿosehu (8,14): Israel’s fundamental sin restated as covenant amnesia. Ties to creator language established elsewhere in the pipeline (Colossians 1,16-17), here applied nationally rather than cosmically — disambiguate the scope explicitly.
Adam Covenant Transgression
Approved rendering: wie Adam haben sie den Bund gebrochen
Transliteration: wie Adam haben sie den Bund gebrochen
Doctrine: Covenant Curse and Historical Judgment
Original: כְּאָדָם עָבְרוּ בְרִית
Category: Covenant Breaking
Ke-Adam ʿavru berit (6,7): genuinely disputed reading (Adam as the primal man vs. a place name, cf. Joshua 3,16). Flag the ambiguity transparently in teaching material rather than silently resolving it in either direction.
Luxuriant Vine
Approved rendering: ein wuchernder Weinstock
Transliteration: ein wuchernder Weinstock
Doctrine: Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Original: גֶּפֶן בּוֹקֵק
Category: Idolatry
Gefen boqeq (10,1): Israel pictured as a spreading vine directing its fruit toward idolatrous altars rather than toward God. Useful contrastive (non-lexical) teaching bridge to John 15,1.5’s ‘true vine.‘
Beth Aven
Approved rendering: Beth-Awen
Transliteration: Beth-Awen
Doctrine: Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Original: בֵּית אָוֶן
Category: Idolatry
Beit-Aven (4,15; 5,8; 10,5): mocking distortion of Bethel (‘House of God’) into ‘House of Wickedness.’ Brief teaching gloss on the wordplay recommended.
Ephraim
Approved rendering: Ephraim
Transliteration: Ephraim
Doctrine: Covenant Identity (Northern Kingdom)
Original: אֶפְרַיִם
Category: Covenant Identity
Synecdoche for the entire Northern Kingdom of Israel. Teaching material must clarify on first occurrence per chapter that ‘Ephraim’ is shorthand for the Northern Kingdom, not a separate people.
Jacob
Approved rendering: Jakob
Transliteration: Jakob
Doctrine: Jacob and Covenant Memory
Original: יַעֲקֹב
Category: Covenant Memory
The patriarch (12,2-4.12), invoked both as national ancestor and as a typological figure whose own wrestling with God mirrors the nation’s need to return. Requires a brief Genesis 32 cross-reference gloss.
Child Naar
Approved rendering: Kind
Transliteration: Kind
Doctrine: Corporate Sonship and Its Messianic Typology
Naʿar (11,1): Israel’s national infancy at the Exodus — the tender, formative, dependent stage of the covenant relationship. Must not be rendered with a term implying pejorative childishness.
Justice Mishpat
Approved rendering: Recht
Transliteration: Recht
Doctrine: The Marriage Metaphor for God and His People
Mishpat (2,19-20 betrothal formula, paired with tsedeq/Gerechtigkeit): covenant justice as part of the fourfold betrothal-vocabulary cluster. Keep paired consistently with Gerechtigkeit in this specific passage.
Faithfulness Emunah
Approved rendering: Treue
Transliteration: Treue
Doctrine: The Marriage Metaphor for God and His People
Emunah (2,20 betrothal formula, ‘I will betroth you in faithfulness’): distinct from chesed, applied here to a different Hebrew root than steadfast_love; ‘Treue’ is appropriate for THIS specific term even though it was explicitly rejected as a rendering for chesed elsewhere — no conflict, since these are two different Hebrew words.
Low Risk Terms
Prophet
Approved rendering: Prophet
Transliteration: Prophet
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Reused for Hosea’s own prophetic office; see new entry prophets_hosea for the plural neviʾim at 6,5 and 12,10.
Prophecy
Approved rendering: Weissagung
Transliteration: Weissagung
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Hosea itself is a work of prophetic literature; relevant as background register even where the specific noun is infrequent in the book’s own text.
David
Approved rendering: David
Transliteration: David
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Hosea 3,5 (‘afterward… they shall seek the LORD their God, and David their king’) anticipates covenant restoration under a renewed Davidic kingship.
Gomer
Approved rendering: Gomer
Transliteration: Gomer
Doctrine: The Marriage Metaphor for God and His People
Original: גֹּמֶר
Category: Marriage Metaphor
Proper name of Hosea’s wife (1,2-3; 3,1-3); requires a brief narrative-context gloss on first occurrence so readers grasp her symbolic-national, not merely biographical, function.
Admah
Approved rendering: Adma
Transliteration: Adma
Doctrine: Judgment and Compassion Held Together
Original: אַדְמָה
Category: Judgment
One of the cities destroyed alongside Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19), invoked at Hosea 11,8 as the total destruction God is agonizingly refusing to impose on Israel. Brief Genesis 19 cross-reference gloss recommended.
Cake Not Turned
Approved rendering: ein Kuchen, der nicht gewendet wird
Transliteration: ein Kuchen, der nicht gewendet wird
Doctrine: Political and Religious Corruption
Original: עֻגָה בְּלִי הֲפוּכָה
Category: Minor Imagery
ʿUgah beli hafuchah (7,8): a half-baked cake, burnt on one side, raw on the other — a vivid domestic image of Ephraim’s half-hearted foreign-policy compromises.
Silly Dove
Approved rendering: eine törichte Taube
Transliteration: eine törichte Taube
Doctrine: Political and Religious Corruption
Original: יוֹנָה פוֹתָה
Category: Minor Imagery
Yonah fotah (7,11): Ephraim’s foreign-policy vacillation between Egypt and Assyria compared to a naive, easily-trapped dove.
Restoration Imagery Dew Lily Lebanon
Approved rendering: wie der Tau…wie die Lilie…wie der Libanon
Transliteration: wie der Tau…wie die Lilie…wie der Libanon
Doctrine: Restoration and Blessing Imagery
Original: כַּטַּל…כַּשּׁוֹשַׁנָּה…כַּלְּבָנוֹן
Category: Restoration
14,5-7: a cluster of restoration-blessing images (dew, lily, cedar of Lebanon) describing the flourishing following genuine covenant restoration. Keep imagery sensorily specific rather than flattened to generic ‘blessing’ language.
Priests
Approved rendering: Priester
Transliteration: Priester
Doctrine: Priestly Complicity in Apostasy
Original: כֹּהֲנִים
Category: Covenant Breaking
Kohanim (4,4-9): Israel’s ordained cultic officials, whose complicity in leading the people into idolatrous ‘knowledge’-failure Hosea specifically indicts.
Egypt
Approved rendering: Ägypten
Transliteration: Ägypten
Doctrine: Historical Reference (Exodus Deliverance)
Original: מִצְרַיִם
Category: Historical Reference
Mitsrayim: the place of Israel’s bondage from which God delivered the nation (2,15; 8,13; 9,3.6; 11,1.5.11; 12,9.13; 13,4), establishing the Exodus as the founding covenant act recalled throughout the book.
