Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Nehemiah — German (Destination Language)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md across the entire book of Nehemiah (chs. 1–13), including the core passage (8:1–12). Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked (baseline reuse) and must be rendered exactly as recorded there; no alternative is permitted. New terms proposed for this curriculum are marked (NEW) and should be added to translation memory with incremented version number before Phase 2 processing begins, per the pipeline’s 12_ai_translation_requirements.md procedure.
| # | German Term | Hebrew Original (Transliteration) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Risk Tier | Doctrine | Status / Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | HERR / Herr | יהוה (YHWH) / אֲדֹנָי (Adonai) | the covenant Name / “my Lord, my Master” | personal divine name vs. title of lordship | LORD / Lord | Critical | Prayer and Dependence; all doctrines | (baseline reuse: “Herr”) — extend with mandatory small-caps HERR typographic convention for the tetragrammaton throughout Nehemiah, distinct from “Herr” for Adonai. Highest-frequency Critical term in the book. |
| 2 | Gott | אֱלֹהִים (Elohim); אֱלֹהֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם (Elohei ha-shamayim, “God of heaven”) | God; “God of heaven” (diplomatic title) | supreme deity; used before Persian court | God, God of heaven | Critical/Medium | All doctrines | (baseline reuse: “Gott”). “Gott des Himmels” (NEW, Medium) as a sub-entry for the diplomatic title (ch.2). |
| 3 | Gesetz (des Mose) | תּוֹרַת מֹשֶׁה (torat Mosheh); סֵפֶר הַתּוֹרָה (sefer ha-torah) | instruction/teaching; “Book of the Law” | the Mosaic covenant corpus, written and read | Law, Book of the Law, Book of Moses | Critical | The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed | (baseline reuse: “Gesetz”). Core-passage anchor term, ch.8. |
| 4 | Bund | בְּרִית (berit) | covenant, binding agreement | relational/legal covenant bond | covenant | High | Confession and Covenant Renewal | (baseline reuse: “Bund”). Structural climax at ch.10’s written, sealed covenant. |
| 5 | Gnade / Güte / Treue | חֶסֶד (chesed) | steadfast love, covenant loyalty, faithful kindness | covenant loyalty-love, often reciprocal | steadfast love, mercy, lovingkindness, faithfulness | High (NEW) | Prayer and Dependence; Confession and Covenant Renewal | Distinct from baseline Gnade (NT charis, unmerited saving favor). Recommend Gnade und Treue or Güte with mandatory translator note distinguishing OT covenant-loyalty sense from NT forensic-grace sense to prevent silent conflation. |
| 6 | Sündenbekenntnis / bekennen | וִדּוּי / הִתְוַדָּה (widduy / hitvadah) | acknowledgment/confession (of sin) | corporate or individual confession before God | confess, confession | High (NEW) | Confession and Covenant Renewal | Forbidden substitution: never “Beichte” (sacramental/priest-mediated connotation absent from this text). Use bekennen/Bekenntnis consistently across chs. 1 and 9. |
| 7 | Gebet | תְּפִלָּה (tefillah) | petition, supplication | prayer addressed to God, personal or corporate | prayer | High (NEW) | Prayer and Dependence on God in Leadership | Primary rendering for Nehemiah’s personal petitions (chs.1, 2, 4, 6, 13); distinguish from baseline Fürbitte, reserved for explicitly intercessory national-confession content (ch.9). |
| 8 | Fasten | צוֹם (tsom) | fasting | abstention from food as mourning/petition | fasting | Medium (NEW) | Prayer and Dependence | Note contemporary German Fastenzeit/Lent association; gloss Nehemiah’s occasional, crisis-driven fast contextually. |
| 9 | Knecht/Diener | עֶבֶד (eved) | slave, servant | covenant-relational self-designation before God/king | servant(s) | Low-Medium (NEW) | Prayer and Dependence | Ch.1, recurring self-address. |
| 10 | Mauer | חוֹמָה (chomah) | (city) defensive wall | wall as physical structure and restoration symbol | wall | Medium (NEW) | Rebuilding the Wall as Restoration | Central recurring image, chs. 1-7, 12. |
| 11 | Tor | שַׁעַר (sha’ar) | gate | city gate (also named individually, e.g. Water Gate) | gate | Low (NEW) | Rebuilding the Wall as Restoration | Chs. 2-3, 8, 12; named gates (e.g. Wassertor, Water Gate, 8:1) are proper-noun-adjacent and low risk. |
| 12 | Statthalter | פֶּחָה (pechah) | provincial governor | Persian-imperial administrative office | governor | Low-Medium (NEW) | Prayer and Dependence in Leadership | Ch.2, 5, 12; Nehemiah’s civil title. |
| 13 | die gute Hand (Gottes) | יַד־אֱלֹהִים הַטּוֹבָה (yad Elohim ha-tovah) | the good hand (of God) | idiom for divine favor/providential guidance | hand of God | High (NEW) | Prayer and Dependence (Providence link) | Connects to baseline Vorsehung doctrine; must remain personal/purposive, not deist. |
| 14 | verspotten / verachten | לָעַג / בָּזָה (la’ag / bazah) | to mock, deride / to despise | scorn, contempt directed at the rebuilding project | mock, despise | Low-Medium (NEW) | Opposition and Perseverance | Ch.2, recurring through ch.4, 6. |
| 15 | ausbessern / befestigen / stärken | חִזֵּק (chazaq) | to be strong; to strengthen, repair, fortify | physical repair-work; metaphorical strengthening/resolve | repaired, strengthened, strengthen (hands) | Medium (NEW) | Rebuilding the Wall; Opposition and Perseverance | Wordplay across chs. 3-4 (physical repair) and 6 (“strengthen my hands,” prayer). Consistency across senses flagged for reviewers. |
| 16 | verhöhnt / beschimpft; unser Gott hat für uns gestritten | חָרְפוּ; נִלְחָם לָנוּ (charfu; nilcham lanu) | reproached, taunted; fought for us | imprecatory-prayer content and divine-warrior interpretation of defense | despised/taunted; God fought for us | Medium-High (NEW) | Opposition and Perseverance | Ch.4; flag imprecatory content for theologian pastoral framing. |
| 17 | Furcht Gottes / Gottesfurcht | יִרְאַת אֱלֹהִים (yirat Elohim) | fear, reverence, awe of God | reverential awe motivating ethical conduct, not servile terror | fear of God | High (NEW) | Prayer and Dependence on God in Leadership | Ch.5, Nehemiah’s own governing standard; requires first-occurrence gloss against a merely negative “fear” reading. |
| 18 | Wucher / Zins | נֶשֶׁךְ (neshekh) | interest, usury (lit. “a bite”) | forbidden interest-charging among covenant kin | usury, interest | Medium (NEW) | (Covenant ethics, supporting Confession/Covenant Renewal) | Ch.5. |
| 19 | Eid / Schwur | שְׁבוּעָה (shevuah) | sworn oath | binding public promise | oath | Medium (NEW) | Confession and Covenant Renewal | Ch.5 (debt release) and ch.10 (covenant document), paired with alah (curse) in ch.10. |
| 20 | dieses Werk ist mit Hilfe unseres Gottes vollbracht worden | מְלָאכָה (melakhah) | work, labor, task | sacred communal-restoration labor (also technical Sabbath term) | work, this work | High (NEW) | Rebuilding the Wall; Opposition and Perseverance | Ch.6:16 climactic narrator’s verdict. Mandatory translator note: distinguish from baseline Critical soteriological terms gute Werke / Werke des Gesetzes — unrelated theological category. |
| 21 | Leviten | לְוִיִּם (Leviyyim) | Levites | tribe set apart for cultic/teaching service | Levites | Low (NEW) | The Word of God…Understood | Established German Bible form; chs. 8, 9, 12, 13. |
| 22 | verstehen / Verständnis | בִּין (bin, hiphil) | to discern, understand, give insight | intellectual and practical comprehension | understand, gave the sense | Critical (NEW) | The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed | Core-passage keyword, repeated 8:2, 3, 7, 8, 12; consistency across all occurrences mandatory. |
| 23 | Versammlung (primary) / Gemeinde (with gloss) | קָהָל (qahal) | summoned/gathered congregation | Israel’s covenant assembly; LXX renders as ἐκκλησία | assembly, congregation | High (NEW) | The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed | Recommend Versammlung as primary OT-context rendering; Gemeinde (baseline reuse for NT ekklēsia) noted only as a teaching-material cross-reference, not the default Scripture-text rendering, to avoid retrojecting full NT ecclesiology. |
| 24 | Schriftgelehrter / Schreiber | סוֹפֵר (sofer) | scribe, professional copyist/teacher of Torah | secretarial and, post-exile, authoritative-teacher role | scribe | Medium (NEW) | The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed | Positive figure (Ezra); explicit translator note required distinguishing from the negative Matthew 23 “Schriftgelehrte” baseline usage. |
| 25 | lesen / vorlesen | קָרָא (qara) | to call out, read aloud | public proclamation of a text | read, read aloud | Medium (NEW) | The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed | Ch.8, sustained public reading. |
| 26 | deutlich / mit Erklärung | מְפֹרָשׁ (meforash) | distinctly, clearly (possibly with translation/paraphrase) | clear/explanatory rendering of the text | clearly, distinctly, with interpretation | High (NEW) | The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed | Ch.8:8; possible Hebrew-to-Aramaic translation-assistance nuance, flagged as scholarly option. |
| 27 | Amen | אָמֵן (amen) | firmness, truth; liturgical affirmation | congregational ratification of praise | Amen | Low | The Word of God Read…Obeyed | Transliterate per baseline standing rule (Amen, Halleluja, Abba). |
| 28 | preisen / loben (den HERRN) | בֵּרֵךְ (barak, piel) | to bless; (of God as object) to praise/extol | worship-directed praise, distinct from bestowing favor | blessed (the LORD) | Medium (NEW) | The Word of God Read…Obeyed | Never “segnete den HERRN” — direction-of-blessing error risk. |
| 29 | sich verneigen / anbeten | קדד / שחה (qadad / shachah) | to bow the head / to prostrate fully | physical worship posture | bowed, worshiped | Medium (NEW) | The Word of God Read…Obeyed | Preserve concrete physical posture, not abstract “anbeten” alone. |
| 30 | heilig | קָדוֹשׁ (qadosh) | set apart, consecrated | ritual, moral, and divine holiness; here a calendrical festival-day sense | holy | Medium | The Word of God Read…Obeyed; Joy of the Lord | (baseline reuse: “heilig”). Ch.8:9,10,11 calendrical “holy day” sense needs first-occurrence clarification. |
| 31 | trauern / weinen | אָבַל / בָּכָה (aval / bakhah) | to mourn / to weep | grief over sin, loss, or conviction | mourn, weep | High (NEW) | The Word of God…Obeyed; Joy of the Lord | Ch.8:9; guard against a “suppression of grief” misreading — redirection to festival joy, not denial of legitimate conviction. |
| 32 | Anteile / Portionen | מָנוֹת (manot) | allotted food-shares | festival provision, explicitly including the needy | portions | Medium (NEW) | Joy of the Lord as Strength | Ch.8:10,12; keep concrete provision-for-the-poor sense. |
| 33 | Freude (des/am HERRN) | שִׂמְחָה / שִׂמְחַת יְהוָה (simchah / simchat YHWH) | joy, gladness, festival rejoicing | joy sourced in/belonging to YHWH; festival-covenantal celebration | joy, joy of the LORD, rejoicing | Critical (NEW) | The Joy of the Lord as Strength | Core-passage doctrinal center, 8:10,12; also ch.12:43. Consistent noun family required across the chapter’s emotional arc. |
| 34 | Stärke (mit Verweis auf “Zuflucht/Festung”) | מָעוֹז (ma’oz) | stronghold, fortress, refuge | protective place of safety; English/German convention softens to “strength” | strength, stronghold, refuge | Critical (NEW) | The Joy of the Lord as Strength | 8:10. Follow established German Bible convention “Stärke” in the Scripture text itself; mandatory exposition note surfacing the underlying “fortress/refuge” nuance in teaching material. |
| 35 | bekümmert / betrübt | עָצַב (atsav) | to be pained, grieved | emotional distress, possible self-reproach | grieved | Low-Medium (NEW) | Joy of the Lord as Strength | 8:10-11. |
| 36 | beruhigen / “Seid still” | הַס (hasah) | to hush, calm, quiet | imperative pastoral quieting of mourning/clamor | calmed, be quiet | Low-Medium (NEW) | Joy of the Lord as Strength | 8:11, Levites’ pastoral role. |
| 37 | Laubhüttenfest | סֻכּוֹת / חַג הַסֻּכּוֹת (sukkot / chag ha-sukkot) | booths/temporary shelters; Feast of Booths | pilgrimage festival commemorating wilderness wandering | Feast of Booths, Feast of Tabernacles | Medium (NEW) | The Word of God…Obeyed | Ch.8:13-18; established German festival name. |
| 38 | halsstarrig | עֹרֶף קָשֶׁה (oref qasheh; verb hiqshu et-orpam) | stiff-necked (idiom) | stubborn covenant unfaithfulness | stiff neck, stubborn | Low (NEW) | Confession and Covenant Renewal | Ch.9; fortunate idiom-to-idiom match with established German Bible usage. |
| 39 | gerecht (mit Unterscheidungshinweis) | צַדִּיק (tsadiq) | just, righteous, in the right | God’s justice-in-judgment, declarative/judicial sense | righteous | High (NEW, collision with baseline) | Confession and Covenant Renewal | Ch.9:33. (baseline reuse of root: “Gerechtigkeit”/“gerecht”) but mandatory note distinguishing from the NT Critical term zugerechnete Gerechtigkeit (imputed righteousness to believers) — categorically different usage. |
| 40 | dein guter Geist | רוּחֲךָ הַטּוֹבָה (ruchakha ha-tovah) | your good Spirit | God’s Spirit instructing Israel in the wilderness | (your) good Spirit | High (NEW, connects to baseline) | Confession and Covenant Renewal | Ch.9:20. Connect forward to baseline Heiliger Geist as canonical continuity, not full identity of developed NT Trinitarian content. |
| 41 | schreiben und versiegeln (Bundesurkunde) | כָּתַב וְחָתַם (katav / chatam) | to write; to seal (authenticate) | formal, binding written covenant document | written and sealed | High (NEW) | Confession and Covenant Renewal | Ch.10, structural climax of the doctrine. |
| 42 | Fluch und Schwur | אָלָה וּשְׁבוּעָה (alah / shevuah) | self-maledictory curse; oath | judicial covenant self-binding sanction | oath and curse | Critical (NEW, parallel to baseline) | Confession and Covenant Renewal | Ch.10:29. Same discipline as baseline’s Galatians Fluch des Gesetzes: judicial verdict, never folk-magic curse. |
| 43 | die heilige Stadt | עִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ (ir ha-qodesh) | holy/set-apart city | Jerusalem’s theological designation | holy city | High (NEW) | Rebuilding the Wall as Restoration | Ch.11:1,18. Flag for historical-sensitivity review per baseline’s Israel doctrine caution (modern political conflation risk). |
| 44 | das Los werfen | גּוֹרָל (goral) | a lot (cast object) | divinely-trusted method of selection, not divination/superstition | cast lots | Medium (NEW) | Rebuilding the Wall as Restoration | Ch.11:1. Distinguish from occult fortune-telling, per baseline’s “prophecy” astrology caution. |
| 45 | sich reinigen / reinigen | טָהֵר (taher) | to be/become ritually clean | cultic purification preceding worship/dedication | purified | Medium (NEW) | Confession and Covenant Renewal | Chs.12, 13. Distinguish from baseline Heiligung (ongoing ethical sanctification) — discrete ritual act, not identical concept. |
| 46 | Einweihung | חֲנֻכָּה (chanukkah) | dedication, consecration | formal dedication ceremony for the completed wall | dedication | Medium-High (NEW) | Rebuilding the Wall; Joy of the Lord | Ch.12:27. Mandatory note distinguishing from the later festival Hanukkah (different historical event, same root). |
| 47 | Danksagung | תּוֹדָה (todah) | thanksgiving, thank-offering | formal, musical communal thanks | thanksgiving | Low | Joy of the Lord as Strength | (baseline reuse: “Danksagung”). Ch.12. |
| 48 | Gedenke meiner, mein Gott | זָכְרָה־לִּי אֱלֹהַי (zochrah-li Elohai) | remember me, my God | covenant-relational petition for recognition/vindication, addressed to God | Remember me, O my God | Medium-High (NEW) | Prayer and Dependence on God in Leadership | Recurring refrain, 5:19; 6:14; 13:14,22,29,31. Requires pastoral framing note: not self-righteous merit-claim but grace-consistent covenant appeal. |
| 49 | Sabbat | שַׁבָּת (shabbat) | rest, cessation from work | weekly covenant-sign day of rest | Sabbath | Medium (NEW) | The Word of God…Obeyed | Ch.13:15-22; loose cultural anchor in German Sonntagsruhe, not a strict equivalence. |
| 50 | fremde Frauen / Mischehen | נָשִׁים נָכְרִיּוֹת (nashim nokhriyot) | foreign wives / intermarriage | covenant-fidelity and language/identity concern, not ethnic-purity concern | foreign wives, intermarriage | Critical (NEW, distinctly German sensitivity) | Confession and Covenant Renewal | Ch.13:23-27; ch.10:30. Mandatory theologian-authored anti-ethnonationalist framing required for every use, given Germany’s Blut-und-Boden and 1935 Blutschutzgesetz history — structurally identical requirement to the baseline’s Matthew 27:25 mandatory framing rule. |
Proper Names (Low Risk — Established German Bible Forms)
| German Form | Hebrew/Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nehemia | נְחֶמְיָה (Nechemyah) | Book title and protagonist. |
| Esra | עֶזְרָא (Ezra) | Priest-scribe, ch.8. |
| Artasasta (Lutherbibel 2017) / Artaxerxes (Einheitsübersetzung) | אַרְתַּחְשַׁסְתְּא (Artachshasta) | Persian king; flag spelling choice for translation-team consistency only — not a doctrinal risk. |
| Susa | שׁוּשַׁן (Shushan) | Persian capital, ch.1-2. |
| Jerusalem | יְרוּשָׁלַיִם (Yerushalayim) | Standard form throughout. |
| Juda | יְהוּדָה (Yehudah) | Province/tribal name. |
| Israel | יִשְׂרָאֵל (Yisra’el) | (baseline reuse: “Israel”) — retain the baseline’s existing note on contemporary political-sensitivity given the German Staatsräson context. |
| Sanballat, Tobija, Geschem | סַנְבַלַּט, טוֹבִיָּה, גֶּשֶׁם | Opposition figures, ch.2-6. Standard transliterated forms. |
Cross-Reference Notes for Translation Memory Integration
- All (baseline reuse) entries above must be enforced exactly per the existing Romans-package
translation_memory.json; no new entry should be created for these terms, only a cross-reference note added indicating Nehemiah occurrence chapters. - All (NEW) entries should be added to
translation_memory.jsonwith"curriculum": "Nehemiah"provenance, assigned risk tier as marked, and routed for review per thedoctrine_risk_registry.jsonrouting rules (Critical/High → human theologian; Medium → native speaker; Low → automated), consistent with the pipeline’s existing escalation framework. - Terms #23 (Versammlung/qahal), #26 (meforash), #34 (ma’oz), #42 (alah/shevuah), and #50 (nashim nokhriyot) are flagged as the five highest-sensitivity NEW terms in this package, warranting the same “mandatory theologian-authored framing” treatment the baseline reserves for its most historically fraught NT terms (Matthew 27:25; the Ephesians/Colossians household codes).
Critical Risk Terms
Lord
Approved rendering: Herr
Transliteration: Herr
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Meister, Chef
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: reserved for Adonai/title usage and the NT kyrios confession; ‘Herr’ doubles as the everyday German title ‘Mr.’ with no protective alternative honorific. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: in this OT book, plain ‘Herr’ renders Adonai only (e.g. Nehemiah 8:10’s phrase for ‘our Lord’), and must be kept typographically distinct from the small-caps HERR convention used for the tetragrammaton YHWH — see ‘lord_yhwh’. Reviewers must verify on every occurrence which Hebrew word underlies the German ‘Herr’ before approving.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Gerechtigkeit
Transliteration: Gerechtigkeit
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Tugend
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: names a righteousness God gives and credits, received passively by faith, not achieved — the single most historically load-bearing German Reformation term. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION, MANDATORY: Nehemiah 9:33’s ‘du bist gerecht’ shares this identical German root but affirms God’s own judicial rightness-in-judgment across covenant history — a categorically distinct usage from forensic imputation to a believer. See the dedicated new entry ‘righteous_god’ for the required distinguishing translator note; never let the two senses silently conflate.
Lord Yhwh
Approved rendering: HERR
Transliteration: HERR
Doctrine: Prayer and Dependence on God in Leadership
Rejected alternatives: Herr (reserved exclusively for Adonai/human-title usage), Jehova (Jehovah’s Witness Neue-Welt-Übersetzung rendering; forbidden per the general German translation-landscape cult-avoidance rule)
Original: יהוה
Category: God
NEW. The covenant, personal name of God (the tetragrammaton, YHWH), occurring dozens of times per chapter throughout Nehemiah — the highest-frequency Critical term in this book. MANDATORY small-caps typographic convention HERR, per Lutherbibel 2017 and Einheitsübersetzung practice, kept visually distinct from plain ‘Herr’ (Adonai/title, e.g. Nehemiah 8:10’s ‘unserm Herrn’). German has no everyday-honorific buffer protecting ‘Herr’ from secular flattening; in this OT book the risk is mechanical and scales with frequency far beyond the NT baseline’s single-confession-point risk (Romans 10:9). Reviewers must verify the underlying Hebrew word (YHWH vs. Adonai) at every occurrence before approving capitalization.
Law Of Moses
Approved rendering: Gesetz
Transliteration: Gesetz
Doctrine: The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Rejected alternatives: heilige Schrift (too generic — loses the specific, physically present Mosaic scroll)
Original: תּוֹרַת מֹשֶׁה / סֵפֶר הַתּוֹרָה
Category: Word of God
NEW. Renders sefer torat Mosheh / sefer ha-torah, the written Mosaic covenant corpus, the physical scroll publicly read in Nehemiah 8, grounding the community’s covenant-renewal. Full phrase: ‘das Buch des Gesetzes Mose(s).’ Reuses the baseline’s Critical ‘Gesetz’ exactly per the Romans/Galatians Gesetz-und-Evangelium discipline; never soften to a generic ‘heilige Schrift’ in ch.8, since the passage’s force depends on this being the specific, physically present covenant document, not scripture in general.
Understand
Approved rendering: verstehen
Transliteration: verstehen
Doctrine: The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Rejected alternatives: hören (FORBIDDEN as a substitute — flattens the causal comprehension claim to mere passive hearing)
Original: בִּין
Category: Word of God
NEW. Renders bin (hiphil), to discern, comprehend, gain insight — the core passage’s repeated keyword (Nehemiah 8:2, 3, 7, 8, 12), naming the necessary condition between hearing the Word and obeying it. MANDATORY: render consistently at every occurrence with no variation (‘begreifen’, ‘erfassen’, ‘einsehen’ forbidden as substitutes). This is the single most doctrinally load-bearing lexical choice in the core passage; inconsistency collapses the chapter’s deliberate reading -> explanation -> understanding -> obedience structure.
Joy Of The Lord
Approved rendering: Freude (des HERRN)
Transliteration: Freude (des HERRN)
Doctrine: The Joy of the Lord as Strength
Rejected alternatives: gute Laune (FORBIDDEN — reduces theologically grounded, festival-covenantal, instrumental joy to a generic subjective mood)
Original: שִׂמְחַת יְהוָה
Category: Worship
NEW. Renders simchat YHWH, festival joy that has YHWH as its source, the doctrinal center of the core passage (Nehemiah 8:10, 12; echoed 12:43). Use the HERR typographic convention (see ‘lord_yhwh’); recommend ‘die Freude, die der HERR schenkt, ist eure Stärke’ in exposition to make the source-not-mere-object sense explicit, with the more literal ‘die Freude des HERRN’ as the Scripture-text rendering. Highest-stakes affective term in the whole book.
Strength Stronghold
Approved rendering: Stärke
Transliteration: Stärke
Doctrine: The Joy of the Lord as Strength
Original: מָעוֹז
Category: Worship
NEW. Renders ma’oz, stronghold/fortress/refuge, rendered ‘strength’ by translational convention but almost always used elsewhere in the OT for a literal or metaphorical place of defense and safety (Nehemiah 8:10). Follow established German Bible convention ‘Stärke’ in the Scripture text itself (matching Lutherbibel/Einheitsübersetzung), but teaching/exposition material MUST carry a mandatory theologian-reviewed note surfacing the underlying ‘Festung/Zuflucht’ (stronghold/refuge) nuance — without it, German readers default to a modern ‘good feelings give me energy’ misreading that loses the passage’s actual military-defensive image of joy as protective refuge amid the costly rebuilding project.
Oath And Curse
Approved rendering: Fluch und Schwur
Transliteration: Fluch und Schwur
Doctrine: The Sealed Covenant Document: Oath and Curse
Original: בְּאָלָה וּבִשְׁבוּעָה
Category: Covenant
NEW, parallel risk to the baseline’s Galatians package. Renders be-alah u-vi-shvuah, a self-maledictory curse invoked upon oath-breaking, paired with a sworn oath, by which the community binds itself to specific covenant stipulations (Nehemiah 10:29). Requires the exact same discipline the baseline already mandates for Galatians’ ‘Fluch des Gesetzes’: solemn, judicially serious covenant self-binding sanction, never a folk-magic curse liftable by ritual counter-action — a live German-cultural-collision risk given popular folk associations with ‘Fluch’.
Foreign Wives Intermarriage
Approved rendering: fremde Frauen / Mischehen
Transliteration: fremde Frauen / Mischehen
Doctrine: Covenant Fidelity and the Danger of Intermarriage with Foreign Peoples
Original: נָשִׁים נָכְרִיּוֹת
Category: Covenant
NEW, distinctly and acutely German sensitivity, structurally parallel to the baseline’s mandatory Matthew 27:25 framing rule. Renders nashim nokhriyot, foreign wives/intermarriage with surrounding peoples, confronted by Nehemiah as a covenant-fidelity and religious-syncretism concern, not an ethnic-purity concern (Nehemiah 13:23-27; 10:30). MANDATORY theologian-authored anti-ethnonationalist framing is required for EVERY use, without exception, given Germany’s Blut-und-Boden ideology and the 1935 Blutschutzgesetz. Teaching material must explicitly state the text’s own stated rationale (covenant-religious fidelity and language/identity preservation, 13:24) and must explicitly and unambiguously reject any ethnonationalist or bloodline-purity application. This requirement is non-negotiable. Avoid ‘Mischehe’ without explicit historical-distancing framing, given the term’s specific resonance with the Nazi-era legal category of the same name.
High Risk Terms
Law
Approved rendering: Gesetz
Transliteration: Gesetz
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: ‘Gesetz und Evangelium’ is a cornerstone Lutheran hermeneutical dialectic. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: reused as the core noun for torah generally; the specific compound phrase for the physical scroll read in Nehemiah 8 is handled by the dedicated new entry ‘law_of_moses’ (‘das Buch des Gesetzes Mose(s)’). Exposition material should note that Nehemiah’s torah is relational covenant-teaching, not merely statute, guarding against German legal-register connotations of ‘Gesetz’ (code, statute) flattening the narrative-covenantal sense.
Grace
Approved rendering: Gnade
Transliteration: Gnade
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: Barmherzigkeit, Wohlwollen
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: unmerited, forensic saving favor, apart from any human or ecclesial cooperation (sola gratia). NEHEMIAH EXTENSION, MANDATORY: Hebrew chesed (steadfast covenant-loyalty love, Nehemiah 1:5; 9:17, 32) must NEVER be silently absorbed into this term. See the dedicated new entry ‘steadfast_love’ (Güte/Treue), which this curriculum uses instead of ‘Gnade’ for chesed, with a mandatory distinguishing translator note wherever both curricula are taught in proximity.
Election
Approved rendering: Erwählung
Transliteration: Erwählung
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: relevant background for the lot-casting selection of resettlement families (11:1; see new entry ‘cast_lots’), understood as a mechanism expressing trust in God’s sovereign choice, not the developed NT election doctrine itself — do not retroject Romans 9-11’s full argument onto this narrative detail.
Church
Approved rendering: Gemeinde
Transliteration: Gemeinde
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: Kirche (institution-default)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: preferred for the NT ekklesia/body-of-Christ sense over institutional ‘Kirche’. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION, MANDATORY FENCE: the Hebrew qahal (Israel’s OT civic-covenant assembly, chs. 8-9) is the LXX antecedent of ekklesia but must NOT default to ‘Gemeinde’ as the primary Scripture-text rendering in this OT book — use the dedicated new entry ‘assembly’ (Versammlung) instead, reserving ‘Gemeinde’ only as an explicit teaching-material cross-reference explaining the LXX linkage. This prevents retrojecting developed NT ecclesiology onto a Persian-period assembly.
Steadfast Love
Approved rendering: Güte / Treue
Transliteration: Güte / Treue
Doctrine: Confession and Covenant Renewal
Rejected alternatives: Gnade (rejected as primary rendering — pre-committed by the baseline to the NT forensic, unilateral, unmerited sense)
Original: חֶסֶד
Category: Covenant
NEW. Renders chesed (Nehemiah 1:5; 9:17, 32): covenant loyalty-love, often reciprocal within the covenant relationship, a genuinely distinct theological category from the baseline’s Reformation-freighted ‘Gnade’. Render ‘Güte und Treue’ (paired) or ‘gnädige Treue’, with a MANDATORY translator note on every occurrence distinguishing this from baseline ‘Gnade’ wherever both curricula are taught in proximity.
Confession Of Sin
Approved rendering: Bekenntnis / bekennen
Transliteration: Bekenntnis / bekennen
Doctrine: Confession and Covenant Renewal
Rejected alternatives: Beichte (FORBIDDEN — sacramental, priest-mediated Catholic/Lutheran connotation entirely foreign to this text’s direct, unmediated corporate confession)
Original: וְהִתְוַדֵּה / הִתְוַדּוּ
Category: Confession
NEW. Renders hitvadah/yadah (hitpael), corporate or individual acknowledgment and confession of sin before God, unmediated by priest or ritual intermediary (Nehemiah 1:6; 9:2-3). FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION: never ‘Beichte’. Use ‘bekennen’/‘Bekenntnis’ consistently across chapters 1 and 9.
Prayer
Approved rendering: Gebet
Transliteration: Gebet
Doctrine: Prayer and Dependence on God in Leadership
Original: תְּפִלָּה
Category: Prayer
NEW. Renders tefillah, petition/supplication addressed to God, the recurring foundational act preceding Nehemiah’s political and physical action throughout the book (1:5-11; 2:4; 4:4-9; 6:9, 14). Primary rendering for Nehemiah’s personal petitions; kept distinct from baseline ‘Fürbitte’ (reserved for ch.9’s explicitly corporate, nationally-representative confession-prayer).
Hand Of God
Approved rendering: die gute Hand Gottes
Transliteration: die gute Hand Gottes
Doctrine: Providence and the Good Hand of God
Original: יַד־אֱלֹהִים (הַטּוֹבָה)
Category: Leadership
NEW. Renders yad Elohim (ha-tovah), idiom for divine favor, power, or providential guidance (Nehemiah 2:8, 18, 20). Connects directly to baseline ‘Vorsehung’; must remain explicitly personal and relational, attached to concrete political outcomes, never abstracted into a generic ‘things worked out’ (deist) reading.
God Fought For Us
Approved rendering: unser Gott hat für uns gestritten
Transliteration: unser Gott hat für uns gestritten
Doctrine: Opposition and Perseverance in God’s Work
Original: אֱלֹהֵינוּ נִלְחָם לָנוּ
Category: Opposition
NEW. Renders Eloheinu nilcham lanu, explicit theological interpretation of the community’s successful defense as God’s own action (Nehemiah 4:20). Must be taught alongside the concurrent human effort (guards, weapons, watch-shifts) explicit in the same chapter — never as license for personal vengeance or as a stand-alone triumphalist slogan divorced from due diligence. Paired in the same chapter with the imprecatory prayer of 4:4-5, which requires theologian pastoral framing.
Fear Of God
Approved rendering: Furcht Gottes
Transliteration: Furcht Gottes
Doctrine: The Fear of God and Leadership Integrity
Original: יִרְאַת אֱלֹהִים
Category: Leadership
NEW. Renders yirat Elohim, reverential awe of God motivating ethical restraint and integrity, Nehemiah’s own explicit governing standard (5:15). Requires a MANDATORY first-occurrence gloss: everyday German ‘Furcht’ defaults to plain fear/dread; without explicit exposition establishing reverential, relationship-preserving awe motivating just leadership (not servile terror), the doctrine’s leadership-ethics thrust risks being missed entirely.
The Work Completed
Approved rendering: Werk
Transliteration: Werk
Doctrine: God’s Work Completed and Perceived by Friend and Foe Alike
Original: מְלָאכָה
Category: Restoration
NEW. Renders melakhah, work/labor/task (also the technical term for Sabbath-forbidden work, ch.13); here the narrator’s climactic verdict that the wall’s completion ‘was done by our God’ (6:16): ‘dieses Werk ist mit Hilfe unseres Gottes vollbracht worden.’ MANDATORY translator note required at every occurrence: German ‘Werke’ is the exact noun family carrying the baseline’s Critical soteriological terms ‘gute Werke’ and ‘Werke des Gesetzes’ (the Pauline works-versus-grace argument). Nehemiah’s melakhah is sacred-communal restoration labor, categorically unrelated to that justification debate; careless phrasing risks importing Pauline works-righteousness anxieties into a text where they do not belong.
Assembly
Approved rendering: Versammlung
Transliteration: Versammlung
Doctrine: The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Rejected alternatives: Gemeinde (reserved for the baseline’s NT ekklesia sense; used only as a teaching-material cross-reference for the LXX qahal-to-ekklesia linkage, never as the primary Scripture-text rendering in this OT book)
Original: קָהָל
Category: Word of God
NEW. Renders qahal, Israel’s summoned/gathered covenant congregation — men, women, and all who could understand — gathered to hear the Law read (Nehemiah 8:2, 17; 9:1). The LXX consistently renders qahal as ekklesia, the Greek word behind the baseline’s ‘Gemeinde’; this curriculum deliberately fences the two apart to avoid retrojecting developed NT ecclesiology onto a Persian-period civic-covenant assembly.
Clearly With Interpretation
Approved rendering: deutlich
Transliteration: deutlich
Doctrine: The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Original: מְפֹרָשׁ
Category: Word of God
NEW. Renders meforash, distinctly, clearly, possibly with explanatory paraphrase or translation assistance for a partly Aramaic-speaking returnee community (Nehemiah 8:8). The possible Hebrew-to-Aramaic translation-assistance nuance is scholarly-debated, not settled fact; teaching material referencing it should flag it explicitly as one exegetical option, not asserted certainty.
Mourn Weep
Approved rendering: trauern / weinen
Transliteration: trauern / weinen
Doctrine: The Joy of the Lord as Strength
Original: אָבַל / בָּכָה
Category: Confession
NEW. Renders aval/bakhah, to mourn / to weep — the people’s spontaneous grief on hearing the Law read and recognizing their failure to keep it (Nehemiah 8:9). Reviewers must confirm the German does not make Nehemiah’s redirecting instruction (‘do not mourn’) read as suppression or denial of legitimate conviction of sin; the correct sense is redirection of grief into festival joy appropriate to this specific holy day, not a general prohibition on grieving over sin (contrast the extended, explicitly commended communal weeping of ch.9).
Righteous God
Approved rendering: gerecht
Transliteration: gerecht
Doctrine: Confession and Covenant Renewal
Original: צַדִּיק
Category: Confession
NEW, collides with baseline root. Renders tsadiq, just, righteous, in the right in a judgment/dispute — the confession-prayer’s refrain acknowledging God’s justice in every judgment brought upon Israel for covenant-breaking (Nehemiah 9:33): ‘du bist gerecht.’ MANDATORY translator note required: this affirms God’s own righteousness/justice-in-judgment, categorically distinct from the baseline’s Critical NT doctrine of righteousness credited/imputed to the believer by faith (‘zugerechnete Gerechtigkeit’, Romans 4). The shared German root must not create silent doctrinal conflation.
Good Spirit
Approved rendering: dein guter Geist
Transliteration: dein guter Geist
Doctrine: God’s Spirit Instructing His People in Covenant History
Original: רוּחֲךָ הַטּוֹבָה
Category: Confession
NEW, connects to baseline. Renders ruchakha ha-tovah, God’s Spirit credited with instructing Israel in the wilderness (Nehemiah 9:20), an OT anticipation of the fuller NT doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Flag for theologian review: connect forward to baseline ‘Heiliger Geist’ as legitimate canonical continuity, but caution against silently reading full NT Trinitarian personhood-language back into this OT clause.
Written And Sealed
Approved rendering: schreiben und versiegeln
Transliteration: schreiben und versiegeln
Doctrine: The Sealed Covenant Document: Oath and Curse
Original: כֹּתְבִים / חוֹתְמִים
Category: Covenant
NEW. Renders katav/chatam, to write a document and seal it with a signet, formally authenticating a binding agreement — the community’s confession (ch.9) formalized into a covenant document with named signatories (Nehemiah 9:38-10:27). Structural climax of the confession-and-covenant-renewal doctrine: the community’s commitment becomes a concrete institutional counterpart to the physical wall itself.
Holy City
Approved rendering: die heilige Stadt
Transliteration: die heilige Stadt
Doctrine: The Holy City and the Restored Community
Original: עִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ
Category: Restoration
NEW. Renders ir ha-qodesh, Jerusalem’s first explicit designation in the book as the holy/set-apart city, theologically framing the resettlement lists of chapter 11 (Nehemiah 11:1, 18). Flag for historical-sensitivity review per the baseline’s existing ‘israel’ doctrine caution: contemporary German Staatsräson-inflected discourse about Jerusalem makes this ancient title unusually prone to conflation with present-day political claims. Teaching material must keep the term anchored to its Persian-period context.
Dedication
Approved rendering: Einweihung
Transliteration: Einweihung
Doctrine: Dedication and Ritual Purification of the Restored Community
Rejected alternatives: Chanukka/Hanukkah (FORBIDDEN as a transliteration choice — would falsely suggest identity with the later, unrelated Maccabean festival of the same root)
Original: חֲנֻכָּה
Category: Restoration
NEW. Renders chanukkah, the formal dedication ceremony for the completed wall, with two large choirs processing and giving thanks (Nehemiah 12:27). MANDATORY translator note: this Hebrew root is the same root behind the later festival name Hanukkah (an entirely separate, much later historical event); teaching material must explicitly distinguish the two.
Remember Me
Approved rendering: Gedenke meiner, mein Gott
Transliteration: Gedenke meiner, mein Gott
Doctrine: The “Remember Me” Prayer Refrain
Original: זָכְרָה־לִּי אֱלֹהַי
Category: Leadership
NEW. Renders zochrah-li Elohai, Nehemiah’s recurring short prayer-refrain asking God to remember (and act on behalf of) his faithful service (Nehemiah 5:19; 6:14; 13:14, 22, 29, 31). Requires pastoral framing note for German audiences: the plea is covenant-relational appeal consistent with OT prayer conventions (cf. many Psalms), addressed to God rather than a self-congratulatory boast, and should not be taught as being in tension with grace-dependence but as an expression of it.
Medium Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Gott
Transliteration: Gott
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: אֱלֹהִים / אֱלֹהֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: ‘Sharp religious-literacy divide between former West and East Germany… means Gott is increasingly encountered as cultural-historical vocabulary rather than a live claim for a large and growing konfessionslos population.’ NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: also covers the diplomatic title ‘Gott des Himmels’ (Elohei ha-shamayim, ch.2) used before the Persian court — must retain YHWH’s asserted supremacy even in a Gentile political context, not read as a generic deist ‘Highest Being’ title. See separate entry ‘lord_yhwh’ for the tetragrammaton itself, which is distinct from this generic ‘Gott’ entry.
Covenant
Approved rendering: Bund
Transliteration: Bund
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: בְּרִית
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: relational covenant bond, established biblical German usage since Luther. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: structurally climaxes in the written, sealed covenant document of chapters 9:38-10:39 (see ‘written_and_sealed’, ‘oath_and_curse’); teach chs. 9-10 as one integrated confession-to-covenant-renewal arc so German readers do not treat ‘Bund’ as a single past event rather than a renewable, re-enacted relationship.
Holy
Approved rendering: heilig
Transliteration: heilig
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: rein
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: set apart for God and morally pure; ‘rein’ alone loses the set-apart sense. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: the calendrical festival-day sense in 8:9-11 (‘this day is holy’) requires a first-occurrence clarification distinguishing it from the moral/ritual-purity default a German reader may otherwise assume; see also the separate new entry ‘holy_calendrical’ for exposition-level detail, and ‘holy_city’ for the ch.11 Jerusalem title.
Sin
Approved rendering: Sünde
Transliteration: Sünde
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: colloquial German trivialization risk (‘a Sünde on a diet’). NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: grounds the corporate confession vocabulary of chs. 1 and 9 (see ‘confession_of_sin’); the weighty, culpable-rebellion sense must be preserved undiminished across both the personal (1:6-7) and extended national (9:1-37) confession passages.
Intercession
Approved rendering: Fürbitte
Transliteration: Fürbitte
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: this curriculum reserves ‘Fürbitte’ strictly for the explicitly corporate, nationally-representative confession-prayer of chapter 9; Nehemiah’s own personal, spontaneous petitions (chs. 1, 2, 4, 6, 13) use the new entry ‘prayer’ (Gebet) instead. Do not use ‘Fürbitte’ for every occurrence of prayer in this book — doing so would blur a deliberate register distinction the text itself maintains through pacing and context.
Providence
Approved rendering: Vorsehung
Transliteration: Vorsehung
Doctrine: Providence
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: must render Romans 8:28’s providence as personal and purposive, not deist, guarding against Enlightenment/Kantian impersonal-order usage. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: extends directly into the concrete political-strategy idiom ‘die gute Hand Gottes’ (2:8, 18, 20; see new entry ‘hand_of_god’), which must retain the same personal, purposive, specific-outcome force this baseline entry already requires.
Israel
Approved rendering: Israel
Transliteration: Israel
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: Restoration
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: Germany’s post-Holocaust Staatsräson policy makes biblical Israel especially prone to conflation with the modern nation-state. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: this caution extends directly to the new entry ‘holy_city’ (Jerusalem, ch.11) and underlies the genealogical-continuity doctrine of ch.7; Nehemiah’s repeated use of the name for the restored post-exilic covenant community requires the same care as the Romans package to avoid conflation with contemporary political claims.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Heiliger Geist
Transliteration: Heiliger Geist
Doctrine: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: the personal third Person of the Trinity. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION, MANDATORY: Nehemiah 9:20’s ‘dein guter Geist’ (see new entry ‘good_spirit’) is an OT anticipation of, but not identical in developed content to, this fully Trinitarian doctrine. Teaching material must frame this as canonical continuity of revelation, never retrojecting complete NT personhood-language onto the OT clause without qualification.
Father
Approved rendering: Vater
Transliteration: Vater
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: minor relevance only via genealogical ‘father’s house’ (beit avot) census language throughout chs. 7, 11-12; not a load-bearing theological term in this book beyond its baseline NT sense.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: Heiligung
Transliteration: Heiligung
Doctrine: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: the Spirit’s ongoing work of making believers holy (progressive, moral). NEHEMIAH EXTENSION, MANDATORY FENCE: must be kept conceptually distinct from the new entry ‘purified’ (reinigen, taher), which renders a discrete cultic-ritual purification act preceding a specific worship event (chs. 12-13), not the Spirit’s continuous moral-transformation work — even though both ultimately concern fitness for God’s presence.
Fellowship
Approved rendering: Gemeinschaft
Transliteration: Gemeinschaft
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: avoid constructions echoing the collectivist Volksgemeinschaft register. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: relevant background for the whole-community, distributed-labor character of the wall-rebuilding (ch.3, every family repairing its own section) and the unified gathering of ch.8:1 (‘as one man’); use sparingly and only as exposition-level color, not as the primary Scripture-text rendering of qahal (see ‘assembly’).
Fasting
Approved rendering: Fasten
Transliteration: Fasten
Doctrine: Prayer and Dependence on God in Leadership
Original: צוֹם
Category: Prayer
NEW. Renders tsom, abstention from food as an embodied act of mourning and urgent petition (Nehemiah 1:4; 9:1). Contemporary German Fastenzeit/Lent association may cue a fixed liturgical season rather than Nehemiah’s occasional, crisis-driven fast; a brief contextual gloss is advisable in teaching material.
Servant Self Designation
Approved rendering: Knecht
Transliteration: Knecht
Doctrine: Prayer and Dependence on God in Leadership
Original: עֶבֶד
Category: Leadership
NEW. Renders eved, slave/servant, used as a covenant-relational self-designation before God or king (Nehemiah 1:6, 10-11). Low collision risk; the humble-dependence posture is operative, not literal chattel slavery.
Wall
Approved rendering: Mauer
Transliteration: Mauer
Doctrine: Rebuilding the Wall as Restoration of God’s People
Original: חוֹמָה
Category: Restoration
NEW. Renders chomah, the city’s defensive wall, the book’s central concrete image, whose rebuilding constitutes restoration of covenant identity and security (chs.1-7, 12). Simple vocabulary but doctrinally loaded; teaching material should keep the wall consistently tied to communal/covenantal restoration, not treated as antiquarian engineering detail. Contemporary German Berlin Wall associations are a useful positive teaching bridge (protection/restoration vs. division) when handled deliberately, but must not silently substitute for the ancient text’s own meaning.
Mock Despise
Approved rendering: verspotten / verachten
Transliteration: verspotten / verachten
Doctrine: Opposition and Perseverance in God’s Work
Original: לָעַג / בָּזָה
Category: Opposition
NEW. Renders la’ag/bazah, to mock, deride, or hold in contempt — the opening posture of Sanballat and Tobiah’s opposition (2:19; 4:1-3). Straightforward vocabulary; doctrinal weight lies in the recurring pattern, not the words themselves.
Strengthen Repair
Approved rendering: ausbessern / befestigen / stärken
Transliteration: ausbessern / befestigen / stärken
Doctrine: Rebuilding the Wall as Restoration of God’s People
Original: חִזֵּק
Category: Restoration
NEW. Renders chazaq (hiphil), to be strong; to strengthen, repair, fortify — used for both physical wall-repair (chs.3-4) and Nehemiah’s prayer refrain ‘strengthen my hands’ (6:9). Render ‘ausbessern/befestigen’ for the physical sense and ‘stärken’ for the metaphorical/prayer sense; German cannot reproduce the single Hebrew root’s dual sense with one word family, so an explicit cross-reference note is required in teaching material naming the lost wordplay.
Usury
Approved rendering: Wucher
Transliteration: Wucher
Doctrine: Social Justice and Covenant Ethics Among God’s People
Rejected alternatives: Zins (too neutral/mild — flattens the specifically exploitative, covenant-kin-violating sense)
Original: נֶשֶׁךְ
Category: Ethics
NEW. Renders neshekh, interest/usury charged on loans, forbidden among covenant kin, confronted by Nehemiah as an internal covenant-violation (5:7-11). ‘Wucher’ remains a recognized legal category in German civil law (§138 BGB), offering a helpful, though non-equivalent, cultural anchor.
Oath
Approved rendering: Eid / Schwur
Transliteration: Eid / Schwur
Doctrine: Confession and Covenant Renewal
Original: שְׁבוּעָה
Category: Covenant
NEW. Renders shevuah, a sworn, binding public promise — used both for the debt-release oath of ch.5 and paired with a curse-sanction in the covenant document of ch.10. Low collision risk standing alone; becomes Critical only in its ch.10 pairing with ‘curse’ (see ‘oath_and_curse’).
Scribe
Approved rendering: Schriftgelehrter
Transliteration: Schriftgelehrter
Doctrine: The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Original: סוֹפֵר
Category: Word of God
NEW. Renders sofer, a professional copyist and authoritative teacher of the Torah text; Ezra’s title in Nehemiah 8:1, 4, 9, 13. MANDATORY translator note: this figure is presented entirely positively (a faithful minister of the Word), the exact opposite valence from the baseline’s Matthew package, where ‘Schriftgelehrte’ appears almost exclusively in Jesus’ polemical woes (Matthew 23). Recommend a first-occurrence gloss, e.g. ‘Esra, der Schriftgelehrte (der die heilige Schrift lehrte),’ to prevent readers who know the Matthew material from importing its negative connotation here.
Read Aloud
Approved rendering: vorlesen
Transliteration: vorlesen
Doctrine: The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Original: קָרָא
Category: Word of God
NEW. Renders qara, to call out, proclaim, or read aloud — Ezra’s sustained public reading of the Law from morning until midday (Nehemiah 8:3). Ensure the sustained duration (‘vom frühen Morgen bis zum Mittag’) is preserved as a deliberate marker of reverence, not incidental narrative detail.
Bless Praise
Approved rendering: preisen
Transliteration: preisen
Doctrine: The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Rejected alternatives: segnete den HERRN (FORBIDDEN — inverts the theological direction of the act; German ‘segnen’ is asymmetrically reserved for God/a designated minister blessing people)
Original: בֵּרֵךְ
Category: Worship
NEW. Renders barak (piel), to bless; when God is the object, to praise or extol him (Nehemiah 8:6; 9:5). Render ‘preisen’/‘loben (den HERRN)’; never ‘segnete den HERRN’.
Bow Worship
Approved rendering: sich verneigen / anbeten
Transliteration: sich verneigen / anbeten
Doctrine: The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Original: קדד / שחה
Category: Worship
NEW. Renders qadad/shachah, to bow the head low; to prostrate oneself fully, face to the ground — the people’s physical worship posture (Nehemiah 8:6). Keep the concrete physical posture (‘das Angesicht zur Erde geneigt’) explicit in the sentence; modern German ‘anbeten’ trends toward abstract devotion and risks losing the full-body enacted response the text describes.
Holy Calendrical
Approved rendering: heilig
Transliteration: heilig
Doctrine: The Joy of the Lord as Strength
Original: קָדוֹשׁ
Category: Worship
NEW (Nehemiah-specific sub-usage of baseline ‘heilig’). Renders qadosh in its specifically calendrical sense: a designated festival day set apart on the covenant calendar (Nehemiah 8:9, 10, 11), not primarily a statement about moral purity. Requires first-occurrence clarification for German readers who default ‘heilig’ toward moral/ritual purity rather than a set-apart festival occasion.
Portions
Approved rendering: Anteile
Transliteration: Anteile
Doctrine: The Joy of the Lord as Strength
Rejected alternatives: teilt miteinander (too generic — loses the specific provision-for-the-needy emphasis)
Original: מָנוֹת
Category: Worship
NEW. Renders manot, allotted food-shares sent to those for whom nothing is prepared — festival joy expressed as deliberate provision for the needy (Nehemiah 8:10, 12). Keep the concrete provision-for-the-poor sense visible.
Grieved
Approved rendering: bekümmert
Transliteration: bekümmert
Doctrine: The Joy of the Lord as Strength
Original: עָצַב
Category: Worship
NEW. Renders atsav, to be pained, grieved, or self-reproachfully distressed (Nehemiah 8:10-11). Reinforces v.9’s redirection theme.
Calm Be Quiet
Approved rendering: beruhigen
Transliteration: beruhigen
Doctrine: The Joy of the Lord as Strength
Original: הַס
Category: Worship
NEW. Renders hasah, to hush, calm, or quiet — the Levites’ pastoral management of the people’s emotional response (Nehemiah 8:11). Shows teaching ministry extending to pastoral emotional care, not only cognitive explanation.
Feast Of Booths
Approved rendering: Laubhüttenfest
Transliteration: Laubhüttenfest
Doctrine: The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Original: חַג הַסֻּכּוֹת
Category: Word of God
NEW. Renders chag ha-sukkot, the pilgrimage festival of temporary shelters commemorating the wilderness wandering, celebrated with unusual thoroughness ‘since the days of Joshua’ (Nehemiah 8:13-18) as fresh obedience to a rediscovered commandment. Established German festival name; currently, actively observed as Sukkot within Judaism — must not be presented as a merely historical curiosity.
Cast Lots
Approved rendering: das Los werfen
Transliteration: das Los werfen
Doctrine: Casting Lots as Trust in God’s Sovereign Selection
Original: גּוֹרָל
Category: Restoration
NEW. Renders goral, a lot cast to determine an outcome believed to be divinely directed — one in ten families chosen by lot to resettle Jerusalem (Nehemiah 11:1). Distinguish, per the baseline’s existing astrology/fortune-telling caution under ‘prophecy’, from occult divination — a recognized OT mechanism for discerning God’s sovereign choice, not folk magic.
Purified
Approved rendering: reinigen
Transliteration: reinigen
Doctrine: Dedication and Ritual Purification of the Restored Community
Rejected alternatives: Heiligung (rejected — distinct discrete-ritual vs. ongoing-progressive-ethical category)
Original: טָהֵר
Category: Restoration
NEW. Renders taher, to be or become ritually clean — priests, Levites, the people, the gates, and the wall itself all ritually purified before the wall’s dedication (Nehemiah 12:30; 13:9, 22, 30). Distinguish explicitly from the baseline’s ‘Heiligung’; keep the two conceptually separate in teaching material even though both ultimately concern fitness for God’s presence.
Sabbath
Approved rendering: Sabbat
Transliteration: Sabbat
Doctrine: Sabbath Observance as Ongoing Covenant Obedience
Original: הַשַּׁבָּת
Category: Word of God
NEW. Renders ha-shabbat, the weekly covenant-sign day of rest, whose commercial violation Nehemiah corrects after the wall’s completion (Nehemiah 13:15-22). Contemporary German cultural memory of Sonntagsruhe (Sunday-rest laws, still partially in force) offers a helpful, though not identical, cultural anchor point; avoid implying full legal or theological equivalence.
Low Risk Terms
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: Danksagung
Transliteration: Danksagung
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: תּוֹדָה
Category: Worship
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: renders todah, the formal, musical communal thanksgiving offered by the processional choirs at the wall’s dedication (Nehemiah 12:31, 38, 46), part of the Joy of the Lord as Strength doctrine cluster.
David
Approved rendering: David
Transliteration: David
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: proper name occurs in genealogical/musical-office references (e.g. Nehemiah 12:24, 36, ‘as David the man of God had commanded’); no new collision risk.
Prophet
Approved rendering: Prophet
Transliteration: Prophet
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: relevant to the false prophet Shemaiah/Noadiah episode (6:10-14) within the Opposition and Perseverance doctrine; also cf. 9:26, 30 in the historical confession-prayer’s recital of God’s prophets sent to Israel.
Prophecy
Approved rendering: Weissagung
Transliteration: Weissagung
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: minor relevance to ch.6’s false-prophecy intimidation attempts against Nehemiah; no new collision risk beyond the baseline’s existing astrology/fortune-telling distinction, which is also directly relevant to the new entry ‘cast_lots’.
Exhort
Approved rendering: ermahnen
Transliteration: ermahnen
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged: context-sensitive, ‘ermahnen’ leans admonish/warn, ‘ermutigen’ for the building-up sense. NEHEMIAH EXTENSION: relevant to Nehemiah’s confrontation of usury (ch.5) and the Levites’ pastoral hushing of the people’s grief (8:11, see new entry ‘calm_be_quiet’) — distinguish sharply between corrective admonition (ch.5) and pastoral comfort (ch.8) when choosing between ‘ermahnen’ and ‘ermutigen’.
Gate
Approved rendering: Tor
Transliteration: Tor
Doctrine: Rebuilding the Wall as Restoration of God’s People
Original: שַׁעַר
Category: Restoration
NEW. Renders sha’ar, a city gate; several are named individually (e.g. the Water Gate, Wassertor, Nehemiah 8:1; 3:26). Named gates function as proper-noun-adjacent references with minimal doctrinal risk.
Governor
Approved rendering: Statthalter
Transliteration: Statthalter
Doctrine: Prayer and Dependence on God in Leadership
Original: פֶּחָה
Category: Leadership
NEW. Renders pechah, the Persian-imperial provincial administrative title held by Nehemiah (2:9-10; 5:14, 18; 12:26). Established German Bible convention for this office.
Levites
Approved rendering: Leviten
Transliteration: Leviten
Doctrine: The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Original: לְוִיִּם
Category: Word of God
NEW. Renders Leviyyim, descendants of the tribe of Levi, functioning in Nehemiah 8 as interpreters/teachers ensuring the people understand the Law, alongside cultic and musical roles elsewhere (chs.9, 12, 13). Established German Bible form; no collision risk.
Amen
Approved rendering: Amen
Transliteration: Amen
Doctrine: The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Original: אָמֵן אָמֵן
Category: Worship
NEW (Nehemiah occurrence). Renders amen, amen, liturgical affirmation (‘so be it,’ ‘it is true/reliable’) — the congregation’s ratification of Ezra’s praise (Nehemiah 8:6). Transliterate as ‘Amen,’ per the baseline’s standing rule for retained transliterated liturgical terms (Amen, Halleluja, Abba). No risk.
Stiff Necked
Approved rendering: halsstarrig
Transliteration: halsstarrig
Doctrine: Confession and Covenant Renewal
Original: הִקְשׁוּ אֶת־עׇרְפָּם
Category: Confession
NEW. Renders hiqshu et-orpam, idiom for stubborn covenant unfaithfulness, recounted repeatedly in Israel’s historical-confession prayer (Nehemiah 9:16, 17, 29). Fortunate idiom-to-idiom correspondence with the established German biblical idiom carried over from Luther’s translation tradition; requires no special adaptation.
