Core Glossary

08 Core Glossary — 2 Timothy (English/Greek → German)

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, organized by the curriculum’s seven Bible Doctrines, followed by a section of terms reused verbatim from the baseline Romans translation_memory.json. Risk tiers and review routing follow the same conventions as the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json. All terms marked [BASELINE] must be reused with their exact recorded German rendering; all terms marked [NEW] are proposed additions to translation memory pending Phase 1 finalization.

Legend: Risk — Critical (mandatory theologian review, every occurrence) / High (mandatory theologian review) / Medium (native speaker review recommended) / Low (automated review sufficient).

This glossary must be read alongside 07_semantic_analysis.md for full context, doctrinal notes, and the reasoning behind each risk assignment. All [NEW] entries above are proposed for formal addition to translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json in the subsequent Phase 1 step that produces those consolidated registry files for the 2 Timothy curriculum.

Critical Risk Terms

Crown Of Righteousness

Approved rendering: die Krone der Gerechtigkeit
Transliteration: die Krone der Gerechtigkeit
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Original: ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης στέφανος
Category: Reward

2 Timothy 4:8, ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης στέφανος. Reuses baseline Critical ‘Gerechtigkeit’ in its eschatological-reward sense, distinct from Romans’ forensic-justification sense — mandatory disambiguation. στέφανος is technically a victor’s wreath, not a royal diadem; ‘Krone’ retained for established devotional continuity, following the same precedent as ‘Nachkomme Davids.‘

Crucified With Christ

Approved rendering: mit Christus gekreuzigt
Transliteration: mit Christus gekreuzigt
Doctrine: Crucified with Christ

Inherited from Galatians package, unchanged. Doctrinally continuous with 2 Timothy 2:8, 11’s union-with-Christ language (a different Greek compound verb, συναπεθάνομεν/συζήσομεν) — see new term ‘died_with_him_live_with_him’; theologian review must confirm consistent doctrinal framing between the two passages.

Fought Good Fight

Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Category: Reward

2 Timothy 4:7. THE central anchor verse of AOR; fixed Luther-tradition phrasing with extremely high recognition in German devotional/funeral usage (comparable to Philippians 1:21). Must NEVER be varied once fixed for this curriculum. Reuses baseline ‘Glaube.’ Mandatory theologian review.

God Breathed

Approved rendering: von Gott eingegeben
Transliteration: von Gott eingegeben
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: von Gott eingehaucht (more literal breath-metaphor, Elberfelder tradition)
Original: θεόπνευστος
Category: Scripture

THE doctrinal anchor term of this letter and this curriculum’s core passage. Luther’s established rendering retained for continuity with existing German liturgical/devotional memory. Must never be softened to imply merely human religious insight; directly confronts the German historisch-kritische Methode’s tendency to treat Scripture as a purely human-historical document. 2 Timothy 3:16, the only NT occurrence of θεόπνευστος. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.

God

Approved rendering: Gott
Transliteration: Gott
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεός
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Invoked throughout 2 Timothy, including as witness to the solemn charge of 4:1.

Good Deposit

Approved rendering: das anvertraute Gut
Transliteration: das anvertraute Gut
Doctrine: Faithful Transmission of the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: das, was wichtig ist (forbidden — erases the concrete legal-commercial force)
Original: παραθήκη / παρακαταθήκη
Category: Transmission

THE central image of Faithful Transmission of the Gospel. παραθήκη/παρακαταθήκη, occurring at 1:12 (God guards Paul’s deposit) and 1:14 (Timothy must guard the deposit). A concrete legal-financial trust-deposit metaphor with no pre-existing German idiom; constructed technical phrase held fixed at every occurrence, structurally parallel in concreteness to the baseline Colossians ‘Schuldschein.’ Mandatory theologian review.

Good Works

Approved rendering: gute Werke
Transliteration: gute Werke
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace Through Faith
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans/Ephesians package, unchanged. Occurs 2:21 and 3:17 (Scripture equips the man/person of God ‘for every good work’); 3:17 is structurally identical in logic to Ephesians 2:10 — apply the identical ‘fruit not ground’ guardrail against Werkgerechtigkeit.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: Heiliger Geist
Transliteration: Heiliger Geist
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 1:14 (‘through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us’) as the guardian of the entrusted deposit.

If Faithless He Remains Faithful

Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Category: Reward

Mandatory theologian review: must NEVER be taught apart from the immediately following ‘er kann sich selbst nicht verleugnen,’ paralleling the baseline’s mandatory pairing of Philippians 2:12 with 2:13 — isolated, this risks a cheap-grace misreading; paired properly, it grounds Heilsgewissheit (a historically significant Lutheran pastoral category).

Lord

Approved rendering: Herr
Transliteration: Herr
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Meister, Chef
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Very high frequency throughout 2 Timothy (1:2, 8, 16, 18; 2:7, 19, 22, 24; 4:8, 14, 17, 18, 22); the baseline’s caution about ‘Herr’ doubling as the everyday German title ‘Mr.’ remains fully live at each occurrence.

Loved His Appearing

Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Category: Reward

Third of three ἐπιφάνεια occurrences; unambiguously the future/second-coming sense here. Must be glossed as ‘Erscheinung [Wiederkunft]’ to distinguish from the incarnation sense at 1:10.

Persecution Promise

Doctrine: Universal Persecution of the Godly
Rejected alternatives: manche werden verfolgt / einige werden verfolgt (forbidden — softens the unqualified universal quantifier)
Category: Suffering

THE central anchor verse for Perseverance under Suffering. The unqualified ‘alle’ must not be softened, per the baseline’s discipline on Romans 3:23 and 10:12-13.

Preach The Word

Approved rendering: Predige das Wort
Transliteration: Predige das Wort
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: κήρυξον τὸν λόγον
Category: Ministry

THE core imperative of CPW. 2 Timothy 4:2, κήρυξον τὸν λόγον. Must retain the heraldic, authoritative-announcement sense established for the baseline’s caution on ‘Evangelium’; must not soften into conversational register. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.

Resurrection

Approved rendering: Auferstehung
Transliteration: Auferstehung
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 2:8 (Christ’s resurrection, affirmed) and 2:18 (Hymenaeus and Philetus’s false claim it has already occurred, denied) — a direct, named case study of this doctrine’s corruption.

Righteousness

Approved rendering: Gerechtigkeit
Transliteration: Gerechtigkeit
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Tugend
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. In 2 Timothy this single German word must serve THREE distinct senses across 2:22 (ethical), 3:16 (ethical/formational), and 4:8 (eschatological reward, ‘Krone der Gerechtigkeit’), all distinct from the forensic-justification sense anchored in Romans 1:17/4:3-5. Mandatory per-occurrence disambiguation in exposition; never let one sense silently bleed into another.

Son Of God

Approved rendering: Sohn Gottes
Transliteration: Sohn Gottes
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. The exact phrase does not occur in 2 Timothy, but the doctrine is the implicit Christological background to the letter’s Christ-hymn material (2:8, 11-13) and must remain consistent if referenced in exposition.

The Appearing Of Christ

Approved rendering: Erscheinung
Transliteration: Erscheinung
Doctrine: The Appearing of Christ: Incarnation and Return
Rejected alternatives: Epiphanie / Epiphanias (forbidden — collides with the fixed German liturgical-calendar feast of January 6, Dreikönigsfest, misdirecting readers toward a calendar association absent from Paul’s usage)
Original: ἐπιφάνεια
Category: Christology

ἐπιφάνεια occurs 1:10 (past incarnation), 4:1 and 4:8 (future second coming) — one Greek word, two entirely different referents within the same letter, with no built-in German disambiguator. MANDATORY bracketed gloss at every single occurrence without exception: ‘Erscheinung [erste Erscheinung]’ (1:10) vs. ‘Erscheinung [Wiederkunft]’ (4:1, 8). Ranked as this letter’s single highest-risk structural ambiguity. Mandatory theologian review.

High Risk Terms

Abolished Death Life Immortality

Doctrine: Christ’s Abolition of Death and Gift of Immortality
Rejected alternatives: vernichtet (forbidden alone — risks implying death no longer empirically occurs)
Category: Christology

‘Abolished’ = death’s condemning power broken, not empirical cessation — pastorally sensitive for German funeral/grief contexts. ἀφθαρσία more precisely denotes incorruptibility than mere unending existence; ‘Unverweslichkeit’ flagged as a more technically precise alternative for theologian consideration.

All Scripture

Approved rendering: die ganze Schrift
Transliteration: die ganze Schrift
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: alle Schrift (viable secondary option)
Original: πᾶσα γραφή
Category: Scripture

2 Timothy 3:16. Unqualified universal quantifier must be preserved — render as an unrestricted assertion about the whole of Scripture, never phrasing that could be parsed as limiting scope to only the parts already recognized as God-breathed (a live philological ambiguity the Einheitsübersetzung’s ‘Jede von Gott eingegebene Schrift’ leans toward more than Luther’s phrasing).

Blasphemers Slanderers

Approved rendering: gotteslästerlich
Transliteration: gotteslästerlich
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Rejected alternatives: Blasphemie / blasphemisch (forbidden — triggers the narrow German criminal-law category ‘Gotteslästerung/Blasphemie,’ §166 StGB, narrower than Paul’s broader NT sense)
Original: βλάσφημοι
Category: Apostasy

2 Timothy 3:2, βλάσφημοι. Prefer the broader ‘abusive/slanderous speech’ sense; avoid the direct legal-cognate rendering.

Called

Approved rendering: berufen
Transliteration: berufen
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Original: κλητός / καλέω
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged (risk raised to High in this book’s registry given proximity to election language). Occurs 1:9 (‘saved and called with a holy calling’), combined explicitly with ‘not according to our works’ — reinforces the Werkgerechtigkeit guardrail.

Calling

Approved rendering: Berufung
Transliteration: Berufung
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 1:9 as ‘a holy calling.’ The baseline’s existing caution about ‘Berufung’s’ collision with the everyday career-vocation and legal-appeal senses remains fully live.

Church

Approved rendering: Gemeinde
Transliteration: Gemeinde
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: Kirche (institution-default)

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Not lexicalized as an exact term in 2 Timothy but implicit throughout the ministry-transmission material (2:2, 2:20-21’s household imagery).

Demas Loved Present World

Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Category: Apostasy

2 Timothy 4:10. Deliberate antithetical echo of 4:8’s ‘loved his appearing’ — must use the same German verb root (lieben/lieb gewinnen) in both places so readers perceive Paul’s intentional contrast between the two objects of love.

Died With Him Live With Him

Approved rendering: mit ihm gestorben…mit ihm leben
Transliteration: mit ihm gestorben…mit ihm leben
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Original: συναπεθάνομεν…συζήσομεν
Category: Reward

2 Timothy 2:8, 11, συναπεθάνομεν…συζήσομεν. Doctrinally continuous with the baseline’s ‘mit Christus gekreuzigt’ (Galatians 2:19-20), though a different Greek compound verb; theologian review must confirm consistent doctrinal framing between the two passages.

Drink Offering

Doctrine: Paul’s Approaching Death as a Drink Offering
Rejected alternatives: mein Leben geht zu Ende (forbidden — flattens the deliberate sacrificial-worship framing)
Original: σπένδομαι
Category: Suffering

2 Timothy 4:6, σπένδομαι. Keep the concrete OT sacrificial-libation image explicit; ‘Trankopfer’ is a genuine missing-cultural-vocabulary gap (no living German libation practice) — supply OT background (Numbers 28) in teaching material, not the translated text itself.

Election

Approved rendering: Erwählung
Transliteration: Erwählung
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Original: ἐκλεκτοί
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 2:10 (‘for the sake of the elect’); requires the same mixed Lutheran/Reformed audience sensitivity already documented in the baseline.

Endure Suffering Kakopatheo

Approved rendering: erdulde Leiden
Transliteration: erdulde Leiden
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Rejected alternatives: haben es schwer (forbidden — too generic, loses the active-directive force)
Original: κακοπάθησον
Category: Suffering

2 Timothy 4:5 (cf. 1:8; 2:3), κακοπάθησον. Directive to actively bear hardship for the gospel’s sake, not a description of unavoidable circumstance. Require the phrase always appear with its object (‘für das Evangelium,’ ‘um Christi willen’) so gospel-suffering is distinguished from generic ‘Leiden.‘

Faithful Men Transmission Chain

Approved rendering: treue Menschen
Transliteration: treue Menschen
Doctrine: Faithful Transmission of the Gospel
Original: πιστοὶ ἄνθρωποι
Category: Transmission

2 Timothy 2:2, πιστοὶ ἄνθρωποι. THE programmatic verse for FTG: Paul → Timothy → treue Menschen → others. German teaching material must make the four-generation chain-structure explicit, since the phrase alone does not automatically convey the chain-transmission logic. ἄνθρωποι is gender-generic; do not imply a male-only chain.

Form Of Godliness Denying Power

Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Rejected alternatives: Gestalt der Frömmigkeit (forbidden — collides with the baseline’s ‘Gestalt Gottes,’ Philippians 2:6, genuine divine substance)
Category: Apostasy

Deliberately different German root (‘Form/Schein’) than the baseline’s ‘Gestalt Gottes’ to preserve the crucial contrast between real divine substance and hollow external religiosity. Both Luther 2017 and Einheitsübersetzung independently favor ‘Schein’ — follow this convergence.

Grace Mercy Peace

Approved rendering: Gnade, Erbarmen und Friede
Transliteration: Gnade, Erbarmen und Friede
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: collapsing Erbarmen into Gnade (forbidden — erases Paul’s deliberate three-part greeting)
Category: God

Paul’s expanded, Pastoral-epistle-specific salutation triad. ἔλεος (mercy) is a genuinely distinct term from χάρις (grace) and must be rendered ‘Erbarmen,’ never collapsed into ‘Gnade.’ Reuses baseline ‘Gnade’ and ‘Friede’ exactly.

Grace

Approved rendering: Gnade
Transliteration: Gnade
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: Barmherzigkeit, Wohlwollen
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 2 Timothy 1:2, 9; 2:1; 4:22. At 1:9 paired explicitly with God’s ‘purpose… before the ages’ — reinforce that grace is never a reward for merit, especially given the election-adjacent language in the same verse.

Herald Apostle Teacher

Approved rendering: Herold, Apostel, Lehrer
Transliteration: Herold, Apostel, Lehrer
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Category: Ministry

Reuses the κῆρυξ root central to CPW (κήρυξον, 4:2); render ‘Herold’ consistently with that later imperative so German readers perceive Paul modeling in 1:11 the very charge he gives Timothy in 4:2. ‘Apostel’ reuses the baseline exactly.

Holy

Approved rendering: heilig
Transliteration: heilig
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: rein
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 1:9 (‘holy calling’) and 3:15 (‘sacred/holy writings’).

If We Deny Him

Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Category: Reward

2 Timothy 2:12, echoing Matthew 10:33. A sober warning within the creedal hymn; must be held in tension with the following clause so as to avoid either presumption or despair.

Judge Living And Dead

Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Category: Reward

This phrase also occurs in the historic ecumenical creeds (Apostolicum: ‘zu richten die Lebenden und die Toten’); use the established German creedal wording for cross-liturgical consistency rather than an ad hoc translation.

Last Days

Approved rendering: letzte Tage
Transliteration: letzte Tage
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Rejected alternatives: Endzeit (forbidden — pop-apocalyptic-thriller/doomsday-prepper baggage in contemporary German media; also the load-bearing Jehovah’s Witness/Zeugen Jehovas technical term tied to their 1914 chronology)
Original: ἔσχαται ἡμέραι
Category: Apostasy

2 Timothy 3:1, ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις. All major German Bible versions converge on ‘letzte Tage,’ never ‘Endzeit.’ Signals a predicted, ongoing pattern of decline across the church age, not a single fixed future event only.

Law

Approved rendering: Gesetz
Transliteration: Gesetz
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. CONTEXT FLAG: 2 Timothy 2:5 uses the cognate athletic sense (‘rules of competition’), not the Mosaic Law directly — must not import the Romans/Galatians law/grace argument into this unrelated athletic metaphor.

Laying On Of Hands

Approved rendering: Handauflegung
Transliteration: Handauflegung
Doctrine: Laying On of Hands and the Ministry Gift
Original: ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν
Category: Church

2 Timothy 1:6, ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν. Catholic sacramental theology (Holy Orders, conferring sacramental grace) vs. Protestant/Free church non-sacramental ordination practice is a genuine German denominational fault line, structurally parallel to the baseline’s caution on ‘die Heiligen.’ Mandatory theologian review; avoid language implying a fixed, adjudicated sacramental theology in either direction.

Lord Will Repay

Approved rendering: der Herr wird ihm vergelten
Transliteration: der Herr wird ihm vergelten
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Category: Reward

Regarding Alexander the coppersmith; exposition should clarify this models entrusting judgment to God, not personal vengeance, echoing Romans 12:19.

Pattern Of Sound Words

Approved rendering: das Vorbild der gesunden Worte
Transliteration: das Vorbild der gesunden Worte
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Category: Scripture

2 Timothy 1:13. Shares the ‘gesund’ root with the letter’s central GSD term (‘gesunde Lehre,’ 1:13/4:3); mandatory consistency across all occurrences. Luther’s traditional phrasing should inform final wording.

Pure Conscience

Approved rendering: reines Gewissen
Transliteration: reines Gewissen
Doctrine: Faithful Heritage of Faith
Original: καθαρὰ συνείδησις
Category: Church

2 Timothy 1:3, καθαρὰ συνείδησις. ‘Gewissen’ carries significant weight in German Reformation-historical memory (Gewissensfreiheit, rooted in Luther’s own appeals before the Diet of Worms); must not be flattened to a merely psychological ‘gutes Gefühl.‘

Purpose And Grace Before The Ages

Doctrine: Divine Purpose and Grace Before the Ages
Category: God

Echoes Romans 8-9’s election/providence vocabulary; requires the same mixed Lutheran/Reformed audience sensitivity as the baseline’s ‘Erwählung’ entry. Reuses baseline ‘Gnade’ exactly for χάρις.

Repentance

Approved rendering: Buße
Transliteration: Buße
Doctrine: Repentance
Original: μετάνοια
Category: Christian Life

Inherited from Matthew package, unchanged. Occurs 2:25 regarding opponents who may yet be won through patient correction; the Reformation confessional-history caution (sacramental vs. purely internal sense) applies unchanged.

Righteous Judge

Approved rendering: der gerechte Richter
Transliteration: der gerechte Richter
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Original: ὁ δίκαιος κριτής
Category: Reward

2 Timothy 4:8, ὁ δίκαιος κριτής. Reuses the δικαιοσύνη/δίκαιος word-family; must not be softened into a merely evaluative sense that loses the forensic, courtroom force of κριτής. Ties to 4:1’s judgment theme.

Rightly Handling The Word

Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Category: Doctrine

The minister’s task is accurate transmission, not creative reinterpretation — directly relevant to Germany’s own historisch-kritische exegetical tradition. The qualifier ‘recht’ must never be dropped; bare ‘auslegen’ alone carries no accuracy-versus-distortion contrast.

Salvation

Approved rendering: Rettung
Transliteration: Rettung
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Heil (Nazi-era contamination risk), Erlösung (more existential/liberation-flavored)
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 2:10; 3:15; 4:18. 3:15 ties this term directly to Scripture’s own stated purpose (‘able to make wise for salvation’); the existing ‘Heil’-avoidance caution applies without change.

Save Into Heavenly Kingdom

Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Category: Reward

Reuses baseline ‘Rettung’ and ‘Reich Gottes’; clarify this is the future, consummated-kingdom sense, distinct from but not contradicting Romans’ present-kingdom-advance emphasis.

Sealed With The Spirit

Approved rendering: versiegelt
Transliteration: versiegelt
Doctrine: Sealing of the Holy Spirit

Inherited from Ephesians package, unchanged. Doctrinal parallel (not identical referent) to 2 Timothy 2:19’s ‘das Siegel’ (God’s foundational ownership securing believers amid apostasy); connect explicitly in teaching material while keeping the two applications distinguishable — see new term ‘gods_seal’.

Solemnly Charge

Approved rendering: ich ermahne dich eindringlich
Transliteration: ich ermahne dich eindringlich
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Rejected alternatives: ich beschwöre dich (forbidden — collides with the occult/incantation sense of ‘beschwören’ in ordinary modern German, e.g. ‘einen Geist beschwören’)
Original: διαμαρτύρομαι
Category: Ministry

2 Timothy 4:1, διαμαρτύρομαι. Secure the legal-solemn sense via the explicit context of God and Christ Jesus named as witnesses in the same verse. Mandatory theologian review.

Sound Doctrine

Approved rendering: gesunde Lehre
Transliteration: gesunde Lehre
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Original: ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία
Category: Doctrine

2 Timothy 1:13; 4:3. THE letter’s central diagnostic category. The German ‘gesund’ preserves the medical metaphor with no linguistic collision risk. Mandatory identical rendering at every occurrence (1:13, 4:3), plus its disease-image counterpart at 2:17 (‘wie Wundbrand’), so German readers perceive the recurring body-health logic.

Testimony

Approved rendering: Zeugnis
Transliteration: Zeugnis
Doctrine: Testimony and Suffering for the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: Martyrium (forbidden — false-friend collision with ‘martyrdom/dying for the faith,’ a stronger claim than the text specifies at 1:8)
Original: μαρτύριον
Category: Church

2 Timothy 1:8, μαρτύριον. Keep strictly distinct from ‘Martyrium,’ though thematically adjacent given the letter’s suffering theme.

The Word Proclaimed

Approved rendering: das Wort
Transliteration: das Wort
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: ὁ λόγος
Category: Church

2 Timothy 2:9; 4:2, ὁ λόγος. The definite article matters: THE word (of God/the gospel), not ‘a word’ of general encouragement. Distinguish in exposition from the baseline’s Johannine ‘Wort’ (the person of Christ, John 1:1, 14) — a related but distinct referent.

Trustworthy Saying

Approved rendering: Glaubwürdig ist das Wort
Transliteration: Glaubwürdig ist das Wort
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Original: πιστὸς ὁ λόγος
Category: Reward

2 Timothy 2:11, πιστὸς ὁ λόγος. A fixed formula recurring across the Pastoral Epistles (cf. 1 Timothy 1:15’s ‘Das ist gewisslich wahr’); render recognizably in the same family so German readers of the wider Pastoral-epistle corpus perceive the recurring pattern.

Weak Women

Approved rendering: leicht zu täuschende Frauen
Transliteration: leicht zu täuschende Frauen
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Rejected alternatives: Weiblein (forbidden — diminutive calque imports gratuitous additional pejorative force)
Original: γυναικάρια
Category: Apostasy

2 Timothy 3:6, γυναικάρια. Narrow, specific historical target (a group deceived by specific false teachers), never generalized to women as a category. Mandatory theologian AND native-speaker review, comparable to the baseline’s Ephesians household-code caution.

Word Of God Not Bound

Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Category: Suffering

Contrast between Paul’s literal imprisonment and the gospel’s unstoppable spread. Touches the baseline’s Galatians ‘Freiheit’ family only by analogy — the freedom here belongs to the word, not to the believer’s legal standing; must not be conflated with the Galatians Freedom in Christ doctrine.

Work Of An Evangelist

Approved rendering: tue das Werk eines Evangelisten
Transliteration: tue das Werk eines Evangelisten
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Category: Ministry

GERMAN COLLISION: contemporary usage of ‘Evangelist’ defaults strongly to the four Gospel authors (‘die vier Evangelisten’), reinforced by church art and RE curricula. This is the only available cognate; mandatory explanatory gloss on every occurrence distinguishing the ministry office (also named Ephesians 4:11) from the Gospel-writer sense.

Medium Risk Terms

Apostle

Approved rendering: Apostel
Transliteration: Apostel
Doctrine: Apostleship
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 1:1, 11, grounding the entire letter’s charge to Timothy.

Be Ready Urgent

Approved rendering: sei bereit
Transliteration: sei bereit
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: ἐπίστηθι
Category: Ministry

2 Timothy 4:2, ἐπίστηθι. Continual, unwavering readiness to proclaim regardless of circumstance.

Complete Proficient

Approved rendering: völlig tauglich
Transliteration: völlig tauglich
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: vollkommen (alone; risks importing a sinlessness/moral-perfection claim)
Original: ἄρτιος
Category: Scripture

2 Timothy 3:17, ἄρτιος, only NT occurrence. Must convey doctrinal sufficiency (nothing further required) rather than generic moral perfection.

Correction

Approved rendering: Zurechtbringung
Transliteration: Zurechtbringung
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Rejected alternatives: Besserung (Luther’s traditional word; also viable)
Original: ἐπανόρθωσις
Category: Doctrine

2 Timothy 3:16, ἐπανόρθωσις, only NT occurrence. Ensure the restorative, not merely punitive, sense is clear in exposition.

Deceiving And Being Deceived

Approved rendering: verführend und selbst verführt
Transliteration: verführend und selbst verführt
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: πλανῶντες καὶ πλανώμενοι
Category: Apostasy

2 Timothy 3:13, πλανῶντες καὶ πλανώμενοι. Preserve the reciprocal, cyclical sense — deceivers are themselves caught in the same delusion they spread.

Delivered From Lions Mouth

Doctrine: The Lord’s Present and Final Deliverance
Rejected alternatives: aus großer Gefahr gerettet (forbidden as a replacement — loses the deliberate OT echo)
Category: Suffering

Vivid, OT-echoing rescue idiom (cf. Daniel 6; Psalm 22:21); reuses baseline ‘Rettung’ family via the underlying verb ῥύομαι.

Equipped

Approved rendering: ausgerüstet
Transliteration: ausgerüstet
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Original: ἐξηρτισμένος
Category: Scripture

2 Timothy 3:17, ἐξηρτισμένος, perfect passive participle. Preserve the passive, received sense (echoing 3:14’s ἐπιστώθης) and the perfect tense’s abiding-result force — given, not self-achieved.

Faith

Approved rendering: Glaube
Transliteration: Glaube
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: Weltanschauung
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 1:5, 13; 2:18, 22; 3:8, 10, 15; 4:7. Uniquely emphasized in 2 Timothy as a multi-generational inheritance (1:5) and as something to be ‘kept’ to the end (4:7).

Father

Approved rendering: Vater
Transliteration: Vater
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 1:2 in the letter’s salutation.

Fulfill Ministry

Approved rendering: erfülle deinen Dienst ganz
Transliteration: erfülle deinen Dienst ganz
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: τὴν διακονίαν σου πληροφόρησον
Category: Ministry

2 Timothy 4:5, τὴν διακονίαν σου πληροφόρησον. Distinguish ‘Dienst’ (general Christian service, the sense here) from the later formal office title ‘Diakon’ (deacon), though etymologically related.

Gangrene False Teaching

Approved rendering: wie Wundbrand
Transliteration: wie Wundbrand
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Rejected alternatives: wie Gangrän (more clinical, less accessible)
Original: ὡς γάγγραινα
Category: Doctrine

2 Timothy 2:17, ὡς γάγγραινα. Keep the vivid medical image concrete, consistent with the letter’s other health/disease vocabulary (1:13, 4:3’s ‘gesunde Lehre’).

Glory

Approved rendering: Herrlichkeit
Transliteration: Herrlichkeit
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: δόξα
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 2:10 and in the closing doxology of 4:18.

Gods Seal

Approved rendering: das Siegel
Transliteration: das Siegel
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Original: σφραγίς
Category: Doctrine

2 Timothy 2:19, σφραγίς. Connects directly to the baseline Ephesians ‘versiegelt’ (sealed_with_the_spirit) ownership/authentication metaphor; name this connection explicitly in teaching material while distinguishing the two applications (foundational ownership-security here vs. Spirit-sealing at conversion there).

Hymenaeus And Philetus

Approved rendering: Hymenäus und Philetus
Transliteration: Hymenäus und Philetus
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: Ὑμέναιος καὶ Φίλητος
Category: Apostasy

2 Timothy 2:17-18. Named false teachers claiming the resurrection had already occurred; directly contradicts the baseline resurrection doctrine — a concrete historical instance of doctrinal corruption.

In Season Out Of Season

Approved rendering: zu gelegener und ungelegener Zeit
Transliteration: zu gelegener und ungelegener Zeit
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: εὐκαίρως ἀκαίρως
Category: Ministry

2 Timothy 4:2, εὐκαίρως ἀκαίρως. Luther’s own phrase, now a naturalized German idiom used even outside religious contexts — a genuine translation asset, provided the homiletic referent remains clear from context.

Incarnation

Approved rendering: Menschwerdung
Transliteration: Menschwerdung
Doctrine: Incarnation
Original: ἐπιφάνεια (1:10, incarnation sense)
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. This is the doctrinal category standing behind 1:10’s ‘Erscheinung’ (epiphaneia) in its past/incarnation sense; see the new term ‘the_appearing_of_christ’ for the specific lexical rendering.

Itching Ears

Approved rendering: denen die Ohren jucken
Transliteration: denen die Ohren jucken
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν
Category: Apostasy

2 Timothy 4:3, κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν. Rare case of exact idiomatic correspondence; German ‘juckende Ohren’ carries the identical vivid image with no adaptation required.

Jannes And Jambres

Approved rendering: Jannes und Jambres
Transliteration: Jannes und Jambres
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: Ἰάννης καὶ Ἰαμβρῆς
Category: Apostasy

2 Timothy 3:8. Figures from extra-biblical Jewish tradition (Pharaoh’s magicians), not found in the Exodus narrative itself; teaching material must note this transparently, parallel to the baseline’s Mark 16/John 8 textual-transparency discipline.

Kingdom Of God

Approved rendering: Reich Gottes
Transliteration: Reich Gottes
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία
Category: Kingdom

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 4:1 (Christ’s future kingdom) and 4:18 (the heavenly kingdom); both carry the future, consummated sense rather than Romans’ present-kingdom-advance emphasis — clarify this eschatological nuance in exposition.

Man Of God

Approved rendering: der Mensch Gottes
Transliteration: der Mensch Gottes
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: Mann Gottes (older rendering; ἄνθρωπος is generic-human, not male-specific ἀνήρ)
Original: ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος
Category: Church

2 Timothy 3:17, ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος. Follows the Luther 2017 revision’s gender-accurate rendering practice, consistent with contemporary German inclusive-language sensitivities and with the underlying Greek’s generic-human term.

Myths

Approved rendering: Mythen
Transliteration: Mythen
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Rejected alternatives: Fabeln (lower-risk alternative — carries the needed pejorative charge natively; consider if register permits)
Original: μῦθοι
Category: Apostasy

2 Timothy 4:4, μῦθοι. GERMAN COLLISION: ‘Mythos/Mythen’ carries strong positive cultural-literary prestige (Nibelungensage, Wagner, comparative-religion scholarship, Bultmann’s own ‘Entmythologisierung’). If ‘Mythen’ is used, the pejorative, fabricated-falsehood sense must be made explicit at every occurrence, not merely on first use.

Patience Makrothymia

Approved rendering: Langmut
Transliteration: Langmut
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Rejected alternatives: Geduld (viable but loses the specifically relational, longsuffering nuance)
Original: μακροθυμία
Category: Ministry

2 Timothy 4:2, μακροθυμία. Without this qualifier, the preceding corrective triad curdles into harshness.

Power Of God

Approved rendering: Kraft Gottes
Transliteration: Kraft Gottes
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Original: δύναμις
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 1:7-8 (positive, Spirit’s power) and 3:5 (ironic negative use, ‘denying its power’) — a deliberate contrast case within the letter.

Rebuke

Approved rendering: tadle
Transliteration: tadle
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: ἐπιτίμησον
Category: Ministry

2 Timothy 4:2, ἐπιτίμησον. Keep distinguishable in register from the milder ‘weise zurecht’ (reprove) so the triad’s escalating force is preserved.

Reproof

Approved rendering: Zurechtweisung
Transliteration: Zurechtweisung
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Original: ἔλεγχος / ἐλέγξον
Category: Doctrine

2 Timothy 3:16 (noun ἔλεγχος), 4:2 (verb ἐλέγξον, ‘weise zurecht’). Keep noun and verb forms terminologically consistent across occurrences within the same teaching unit.

Sacred Writings

Approved rendering: die heiligen Schriften
Transliteration: die heiligen Schriften
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Original: ἱερὰ γράμματα
Category: Scripture

2 Timothy 3:15, the only NT occurrence of ἱερὰ γράμματα. Reuses the baseline ‘heilig’ root. Must be distinguished in exposition from ‘die ganze Schrift’ (3:16) so readers understand these as the same body of writings viewed from two angles (received-and-known vs. God-breathed-and-profitable), not two unrelated categories.

Sanctification

Approved rendering: Heiligung
Transliteration: Heiligung
Doctrine: Sanctification

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Not directly lexicalized as a noun in 2 Timothy but doctrinally implied throughout the letter’s formation/training vocabulary (3:16-17).

Seed Of David

Approved rendering: Nachkomme Davids
Transliteration: Nachkomme Davids
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Rejected alternatives: Same Davids (archaic/crude register)
Original: ἐκ σπέρματος Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged.

Sin

Approved rendering: Sünde
Transliteration: Sünde
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 3:6 (false teachers exploiting people ‘burdened with sins’); the baseline’s colloquial-trivialization caution applies unchanged.

Snare Of The Devil

Approved rendering: die Schlinge des Teufels
Transliteration: die Schlinge des Teufels
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Original: ἡ τοῦ διαβόλου παγίς
Category: Doctrine

2 Timothy 2:26. Frames false teaching as spiritual captivity, not merely intellectual error, adding a spiritual-warfare dimension to Apostasy material.

Soldier Athlete Farmer

Approved rendering: Soldat, Wettkämpfer, Bauer
Transliteration: Soldat, Wettkämpfer, Bauer
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Category: Suffering

Ordinary vocational metaphors requiring only the lower-intensity sensitivity to military imagery already noted for the baseline’s Ephesians ‘Waffenrüstung Gottes.‘

Spirit Of Power Love Sound Mind

Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Rejected alternatives: Selbstbeherrschung (for σωφρονισμός; loses the cognitive-clarity nuance)
Category: Suffering

σωφρονισμός is a rare hapax; ‘Besonnenheit’ preserves the sound-judgment-under-pressure sense better than ‘Selbstbeherrschung.’ Reuses baseline ‘Kraft Gottes’ family for δύναμις.

Spiritual Gifts

Approved rendering: Gnadengaben
Transliteration: Gnadengaben
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts
Rejected alternatives: geistliche Gaben (looser)

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. In 2 Timothy 1:6, χάρισμα occurs in the singular, individual-ministry-gift sense (‘die Gnadengabe…neu entfachen’) rather than the corporate plural sense of Romans 12/1 Corinthians 12 — clarify this distinction explicitly in exposition.

Time Of Departure

Approved rendering: die Zeit meines Aufbruchs
Transliteration: die Zeit meines Aufbruchs
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Original: ὁ καιρὸς τῆς ἀναλύσεώς μου
Category: Suffering

2 Timothy 4:6, ὁ καιρὸς τῆς ἀναλύσεώς μου. ‘Aufbruch’ (departure/setting out) captures the positive, purposeful nautical/camp-departure nuance — a rare case where German idiom lands close to the Greek image with no adaptation needed.

Training Discipline

Approved rendering: Erziehung
Transliteration: Erziehung
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Rejected alternatives: Zuchtmeister (forbidden — reserved exclusively for the baseline Galatians paidagōgos term)
Original: παιδεία
Category: Doctrine

2 Timothy 3:16, παιδεία. Do NOT conflate with the baseline Galatians ‘Zuchtmeister’ (παιδαγωγός, the law’s now-ended custodial office) despite the shared child-training semantic field — Scripture’s training here is ongoing and formative, not temporary and superseded. Mandatory reviewer note.

Unfeigned Faith

Approved rendering: ungeheuchelter Glaube
Transliteration: ungeheuchelter Glaube
Doctrine: Faithful Transmission of the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: aufrichtiger Glaube (more natural spoken German but loses the Heuchelei root-echo)
Original: ἀνυπόκριτος πίστις
Category: Transmission

2 Timothy 1:5, ἀνυπόκριτος πίστις. Shares its root with the baseline’s ‘Heuchelei’ (Galatians package); reuse that root deliberately for cross-pipeline lexical consistency, accepting a slightly more formal register as the cost.

Vessels Honor Dishonor

Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Category: Doctrine

2 Timothy 2:20-21. Keep the concrete household-object image rather than abstracting into ‘gute und schlechte Menschen.‘

Vice Catalogue Last Days

Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Category: Apostasy

2 Timothy 3:2-4, an eighteen-item vice catalogue climaxing in ‘lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God’ — diagnoses the root cause as misdirected love, not isolated bad behaviors. Individual items require only ordinary lexical care except βλάσφημοι (see separate entry).

Were Assured

Approved rendering: wurdest darin gewiss gemacht
Transliteration: wurdest darin gewiss gemacht
Doctrine: Faithful Transmission of the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: du hast dich überzeugt (forbidden — reverses the passive, received sense)
Original: ἐπιστώθης
Category: Transmission

2 Timothy 3:14, ἐπιστώθης. The passive voice must be preserved — conviction was given to Timothy, not self-generated — echoing the passive, received nature of saving faith already established in the baseline.

Low Risk Terms

Books And Parchments

Approved rendering: Bücher, besonders die Pergamente
Transliteration: Bücher, besonders die Pergamente
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Category: Scripture

2 Timothy 4:13. Material-culture detail reflecting the physical transmission of Scripture and teaching; low doctrinal weight but consistent with the FTG ‘good deposit’ imagery.

Closing Doxology

Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Category: Reward

2 Timothy 4:18. Standard Pauline doxology, reusing the baseline ‘Herrlichkeit’; minimal German-specific collision risk.

David

Approved rendering: David
Transliteration: David
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Appears via the seed-of-David Christological formula echoed at 2:8.

Exhort

Approved rendering: ermahnen
Transliteration: ermahnen
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: παρακαλέω / παρακάλεσον
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged, BUT flagged for deliberate reviewer decision at 4:2: this is the third element of the reprove-rebuke-exhort triad and may function as a warmer counterbalance, in which case ‘ermutige’ (encourage) may better serve this specific context than the default ‘ermahne.’ Reviewer must decide per-context, not silently default.

Gospel

Approved rendering: Evangelium
Transliteration: Evangelium
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 2 Timothy 1:8, 10; 2:8. Closely tied in this letter to the charge to preach (κήρυξον τὸν λόγον, 4:2) and to Paul’s own suffering ‘for the gospel’ (1:8).

Jesus

Approved rendering: Jesus
Transliteration: Jesus
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used throughout 2 Timothy.

Peace

Approved rendering: Friede
Transliteration: Friede
Doctrine: Peace with God
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 1:2 in the letter’s salutation.

Prophecy

Approved rendering: Weissagung
Transliteration: Weissagung
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: προφητεία (background to 3:16’s inspiration doctrine)
Category: Covenant

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Not a direct lexical occurrence in 2 Timothy but relevant background vocabulary for 3:16’s inspiration doctrine.

Scripture Profitable

Approved rendering: nützlich
Transliteration: nützlich
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Original: ὠφέλιμος
Category: Scripture

2 Timothy 3:16. Scripture’s practical usefulness flowing from its divine origin; no significant German collision risk.

Thanksgiving

Approved rendering: Danksagung
Transliteration: Danksagung
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία / χάριν ἔχω
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Occurs 1:3 (‘I thank God’).
