Core Glossary
Core Glossary: Zechariah (English → German)
TRI Phase 1, Step 1 — Per-Term Glossary Table
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, citing terms from every chapter of Zechariah (1–14). Terms marked REUSE are already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json and are carried forward exactly as recorded there — no re-derivation, no alternative renderings permitted. Terms marked NEW are proposed for addition to translation_memory.json in Step 2, using the same schema (translation / transliteration / doctrine_risk / alternatives_rejected / notes).
Risk tiers and review routing follow the baseline’s fixed definitions:
- Critical — human theologian review required for every occurrence
- High — human theologian review required
- Medium — native speaker review recommended
- Low — automated review sufficient
A. Reused Baseline Terms (Exact Carry-Forward)
| English term | Hebrew (MT) / LXX Greek witness | German rendering (baseline, unchanged) | Risk | Doctrine(s) in Zechariah | Zechariah occurrences | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| grace | חֵן / χάρις (χάριτος) | Gnade | Critical | Piercing / Zeal for Zion | 4:7 (“Grace, grace to it!”); 12:10 (“Spirit of grace”) | 12:10 is the highest-value reuse: the pierced one’s mourning is accompanied by God-given grace, not self-generated remorse. |
| righteousness | צַדִּיק (adj.) / δίκαιος | gerecht / Gerechtigkeit | Critical | Coming Messianic King | 9:9 (the king is “righteous”) | Must retain the forensic/covenantal weight already fixed for Gerechtigkeit, not soften to generic ethical goodness. |
| salvation | נוֹשָׁע (Niphal ptc.) / σῴζων | Rettung (with documented tension against Luther’s “Helfer”) | Critical | Coming Messianic King | 9:9 | See full discussion in 07_semantic_analysis.md, Part A, v.9 §6. Mandatory theologian review; flag Luther liturgical-tradition tension explicitly. |
| peace | שָׁלוֹם / εἰρήνη | Friede | Low (baseline) / elevated to Medium-High in Zechariah contexts | Coming Messianic King; union of royal/priestly office | 9:10; 6:13 | Reuse exactly; no new risk beyond baseline’s existing note. |
| gentiles/nations | גּוֹיִם / ἔθνη | Heiden (established) — recommend Völker in positive-register contexts (see below) | High | Restoration; Coming Messianic King | 2:11; 8:23; 9:10; 14:16 | Context-sensitive departure from default baseline term recommended: Zechariah’s nation-references are overwhelmingly positive/inclusion-oriented (nations joining the LORD, receiving peace, keeping the Feast); the baseline’s documented pejorative risk of “Heiden” is heightened, not reduced, in this register. Recommend “Völker” as primary rendering for Zechariah passages, reserving “Heiden” for any future contrastive covenant-status context, with mandatory native-speaker/theologian flag per the existing Juden/Heiden escalation rule regardless of which German word is chosen. |
| Israel | יִשְׂרָאֵל / Ισραήλ | Israel | Medium | (implicit throughout) | throughout | No new risk; standard proper-name reuse. |
| David | דָּוִיד / Δαυίδ | David | Low | Davidic Covenant; Coming Messianic King | 12:7,8,10,12; 13:1 | Standard proper-name reuse. |
| covenant | בְּרִית / διαθήκη | Bund | Medium (baseline) / High in Zechariah (direct link to Words of Institution) | Coming Messianic King; Piercing | 9:11 (“blood of your covenant”), 11:10 | Mandatory theologian review given direct cross-reference to the baseline’s fixed words_of_institution term (Matthew 26:28). |
| Holy Spirit / Spirit | רוּחַ / πνεῦμα | Heiliger Geist (when referring to God’s own Spirit) | Medium (baseline) / High in Zechariah | Restoration of the Temple | 4:6 (“not by might…but by my Spirit”); 12:10 (“Spirit of grace”) | Confirm referent is God’s own Spirit (not a generic “mood/disposition”) before applying capitalized term; both Zechariah occurrences qualify. |
| holy | קֹדֶשׁ / ἅγιον | heilig | Medium (baseline) / High in Zechariah 14 | Restoration | 14:20-21 | See extended discussion under ch. 14 in 07_semantic_analysis.md — everyday-object application of holiness. |
| glory | כָבוֹד / δόξα | Herrlichkeit | Medium | Restoration of Jerusalem | 2:5 | Reuse exactly; no new risk. |
| sin | חַטָּאָה / ἁμαρτία | Sünde | High (baseline) / High in Zechariah | Piercing (fountain of cleansing) | 13:1 | Direct link to atonement doctrine following 12:10’s piercing. |
| prophet | נָבִיא / προφήτης | Prophet | Low | Restoration (purging false prophecy) | 13:2-6 | Stable, reuse exactly. |
| Lord | יהוה / κύριος | HERR (all-caps convention for the Tetragrammaton, matching Lutherbibel/Einheitsübersetzung practice) / Herr (Adonai, title uses) | Critical | Coming Messianic King (consummated); Zeal for Zion | throughout; climactically 14:9 | Reuse the baseline’s Herr-Critical-risk discipline; note German orthographic convention of small-caps/all-caps “HERR” for the divine name, distinct from lowercase “Herr” as a title — this OT-specific convention should be documented for Phase 2 translators, since the baseline’s NT-focused package did not need to address it. |
| Weissagung/prophecy | (implicit, the whole book is massa/vision-oracle genre) | Weissagung | Low | Fulfillment of Prophecy (inherited doctrine category) | throughout | Reuse exactly for any cross-reference to Zechariah’s oracles as fulfilled prophecy in later curricula. |
| Buße/repentance | שׁוּב(וּ) / ἐπιστρέφω | Buße (established) — recommend “umkehren/Umkehr” for the specific verb shuv | High (baseline) / Medium-High in Zechariah | (implicit, opening summons) | 1:3-4 | See discussion in 07_semantic_analysis.md ch.1 — Hebrew shuv (“turn/return”) is more directional-relational than Greek metanoia’s “change of mind”; recommend supplementing rather than replacing the fixed Buße term. |
| Nachkomme Davids / seed of David | (conceptual link via tsemach, “the Branch”) | Nachkomme Davids | Medium (baseline) / Critical in Zechariah cross-reference | Coming Messianic King; Davidic Covenant | 3:8; 6:12 | Must be explicitly cross-referenced whenever der Spross (the Branch, new term below) is taught, to keep the Davidic-lineage claim explicit for the audience. |
B. New Terms Proposed for This Curriculum
| English term | Hebrew (MT) | Transliteration | LXX Greek witness | Proposed German rendering | Risk | Doctrine | Zechariah occurrences | Notes / alternatives rejected |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| your king (messianic) | מַלְכֵּךְ | malkekh | ὁ βασιλεύς σου | König (as in “dein König”) | High | Coming Messianic King | 9:9 | Alternatives rejected: none viable — “König” is the only faithful royal-office term; risk is secular dilution (fairy tales, games, historical monarchy), not lexical ambiguity. Must be anchored to Reich Gottes (baseline) and Nachkomme Davids in all teaching material. |
| humble/afflicted | עָנִי | ani | πραΰς | demütig (preferred) / “gering, niedrig” (alternate, material-poverty sense) | Medium-High | Coming Messianic King | 9:9 | Alternatives rejected: bare “arm” (poor) — collapses the royal-paradox point into a modern socio-economic category; LXX’s πραΰς favors the character sense adopted by Matthew 21:5. |
| daughter of Zion | בַּת־צִיּוֹן | bat-Tsiyon | θύγατερ Σιών | Tochter Zion | Medium | Coming Messianic King; Zeal for Zion | 9:9 | Must retain personification; fixed as the opening line of the German Advent chorale “Tochter Zion, freue dich” — do not deviate from this exact form. |
| angel of the LORD | מַלְאַךְ יהוה | mal’akh Yahweh | ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου | der Engel des HERRN | High | Visions of God’s Sovereign Plan | 1:11-13; 3:1-6 | Alternatives rejected: generic “ein Engel” (an angel) — loses the definite, recurring, mediating-figure sense. |
| zeal/jealousy (God’s) | קִנְאָה | qin’ah | ζῆλος | Eifer (NOT “Eifersucht”) | High | God’s Zeal for Zion (assigned core doctrine) | 1:14; 8:2 | Alternatives rejected: “Eifersucht” — carries strongly negative petty-jealousy/marital-suspicion connotation in modern German that risks distorting the covenantal-protective sense; this is the single most important new-term decision tied to an assigned doctrine title. |
| horn(s) (power) | קֶרֶן / קְרָנוֹת | qeren / qaranot | κέρας / κέρατα | Horn / Hörner | Medium | Sovereign Plan | 1:18-21 (Eng.) | Requires brief power-metaphor gloss for readers unfamiliar with the idiom. |
| dwell/tabernacle among | שָׁכַן | shakhan | κατασκηνόω | wohnen (in construction “in eurer/ihrer Mitte wohnen”) | High | Restoration of the Temple | 2:10 | Must be cross-referenced to baseline’s word_became_flesh (John 1:14, “wohnte unter uns”) in teaching material as the fulfillment trajectory. |
| Satan/the accuser | הַשָּׂטָן | ha-satan | ὁ διάβολος | der Satan / “der Ankläger” (gloss) | Medium-High | Restoration (priestly cleansing) | 3:1-2 | Distinguish office-sense here from full later NT demonological personification without over-engineering the distinction. |
| the Branch (messianic title) | צֶמַח | tsemach | ἀνατολή | der Spross | Critical | Coming Messianic King | 3:8; 6:12 | The single most doctrinally load-bearing new term in the book. Must be treated with the same fixed-title discipline as baseline’s Messias/Sohn Gottes. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence. Alternatives considered: “der Zweig” (also viable, more literal “twig/branch”) — rejected in favor of “der Spross” for its slightly stronger new-growth-from-death connotation matching the messianic-hope context, but flagged for reviewer discretion between the two. |
| the stone with seven eyes | הָאֶבֶן…שִׁבְעָה עֵינָיִם | ha-even…shiv’ah einayim | ὁ λίθος…ἑπτὰ ὀφθαλμοί | der Stein…sieben Augen | Medium | Coming Messianic King; Restoration | 3:9; cf. 4:10 | Keep numeral symbolism (completeness) explicit in teaching gloss. |
| lampstand / two anointed ones | מְנוֹרָה / שְׁנֵי בְנֵי הַיִּצְהָר | menorah / shnei b’nei ha-yitzhar | λυχνία / δύο υἱοὶ τῆς πιότητος | der Leuchter / die zwei Gesalbten | Medium | Restoration of the Temple | 4:2-3, 11-14 | ”Die zwei Gesalbten” should be glossed against baseline’s Messias vocabulary to distinguish this dual human office-holder reference from the singular future Messiah. |
| flying scroll / curse | מְגִלָּה עָפָה / הָאָלָה | megillah afah / ha-alah | δρέπανον πετόμενον / ἀρά | die fliegende Schriftrolle / der Fluch | Medium | Sovereign Plan (judgment dimension) | 5:1-3 | Note shared German root with baseline’s Fluch des Gesetzes (Galatians) but keep teaching contexts distinct — different specific referents. |
| Wickedness (personified) | הָרִשְׁעָה | ha-rish’ah | ἡ ἀνομία | die Bosheit / die Gottlosigkeit | Medium | Sovereign Plan | 5:8 | Keep personification and physical-removal imagery concrete in teaching. |
| council/counsel of peace | עֲצַת שָׁלוֹם | atsat shalom | βουλὴ εἰρήνης | Rat des Friedens | Medium | Coming Messianic King (union of offices) | 6:13 | Reuse baseline Friede; compound-construction native-speaker review for naturalness. |
| justice, kindness, mercy | מִשְׁפַּט אֱמֶת, חֶסֶד וְרַחֲמִים | mishpat emet, chesed v’rachamim | κρίμα δίκαιον, ἔλεος καὶ οἰκτιρμόν | wahres Recht, Güte/Treue und Erbarmen | Medium | (ethical outworking of restoration) | 7:9-10 | Chesed is a curriculum-wide (not Zechariah-specific) translation challenge; flag for native speaker review at each occurrence. |
| ten men of the nations grasping the robe | וְהֶחֱזִיקוּ…בִּכְנַף אִישׁ יְהוּדִי | v’hecheziku…bikhnaf ish Yehudi | ἐπιλήψονται…τοῦ κρασπέδου ἀνδρὸς Ιουδαίου | zehn Männer…den Rocksaum eines jüdischen Mannes | High | Restoration; unity of Jews/Gentiles (inherited doctrine) | 8:23 | Mandatory Juden/Heiden historical-sensitivity flag despite the passage’s positive tone, per existing baseline escalation rule. |
| blood of the covenant | דַּם־בְּרִיתֵךְ | dam-b’ritekh | αἷμα διαθήκης σου | das Blut deines Bundes | High | Coming Messianic King | 9:11 | Mandatory cross-reference to baseline’s fixed words_of_institution (Matthew 26:28) for vocabulary consistency. |
| prisoners of hope | אֲסִירֵי הַתִּקְוָה | asirei ha-tikvah | (LXX divergent) | Gefangene der Hoffnung | Medium | Coming Messianic King | 9:12 | Preserve the oxymoron; do not smooth into “hopeful captives.” |
| sons of Zion / sons of Greece | בְּנֵי צִיּוֹן / בְּנֵי יָוָן | b’nei Tsiyon / b’nei Yavan | υἱοὺς Σιών / υἱοὺς τῶν Ἑλλήνων | Söhne Zions / Söhne Griechenlands | Low-Medium | Sovereign Plan | 9:13 | Brief historical footnote on Javan=Greece appropriate. |
| cornerstone / tent peg | פִּנָּה / יָתֵד | pinnah / yated | γωνία / πάσσαλος | der Eckstein / der Zeltpflock | Medium | Coming Messianic King | 10:4 | Flag “Eckstein” for future cross-curriculum consistency (Ephesians 2:20-type material). |
| idols / diviners | אֱלִילִים / קֹסְמִים | elilim / qosemim | εἴδωλα / οἱ μάντεις | Götzen / Wahrsager | Low | Sovereign Plan | 10:2 | Stable, low-collision terms. |
| shepherd | רֹעֶה | ro’eh | ποιμήν | der Hirte | Medium-High | Coming Messianic King (rejected-shepherd motif) | 11:4-17; 13:7 | Fix now for future consistency with John’s “good shepherd” material (10:11,14). |
| thirty pieces of silver | שְׁלֹשִׁים כֶּסֶף | shloshim kasef | τριάκοντα ἀργύρια | dreißig Silberstücke | Critical | Coming Messianic King (rejection motif) | 11:12 | Mandatory verbatim-match flag for future Matthew 27:9-10 rendering. |
| potter | הַיּוֹצֵר | ha-yotser | τὸ χωνευτήριον (LXX divergent) | der Töpfer | High | Coming Messianic King | 11:13 | MT/LXX divergence must be transparently flagged, not silently resolved — directly relevant to Matthew’s citation. |
| pierced | דָּקַר | daqar | κατωρχήσαντο (LXX divergent) | durchbohrt | Critical | The Piercing of the One They Have Pierced (assigned core doctrine) | 12:10 | Mandatory verbatim match with German John 19:37 citation tradition. The single highest-priority individual-word decision in this entire glossary. MT/LXX divergence (piercing vs. mockery) must be transparently flagged. |
| spirit of grace and pleas for mercy | רוּחַ חֵן וְתַחֲנוּנִים | ruach chen v’tachanunim | πνεῦμα χάριτος καὶ οἰκτιρμοῦ | Geist der Gnade und des Flehens [um Erbarmen] | High | Piercing; Zeal for Zion | 12:10 | Reuse baseline Gnade exactly for chen; native-speaker review for tachanunim rendering choice (Fürbitte vs. Flehen). |
| mourning like Hadad-Rimmon | כְּמִסְפֵּד הֲדַד־רִמּוֹן | k’misped Hadad-Rimmon | ὡς κοπετὸν ῥοῶνος | wie die Klage um Hadad-Rimmon | Low | Piercing | 12:11 | Transliterate place-name; brief footnote on obscurity. |
| fountain opened for sin and impurity | מַעְיָן…לְחַטָּאָה וּלְנִדָּה | ma’yan…l’chata’ah ul’niddah | πηγὴ…εἰς ἀφαγνισμὸν | eine Quelle…zur Reinigung von Sünde und Unreinheit | High | Piercing (atonement sequel) | 13:1 | Direct forward link to future atonement/cross doctrine; mandatory theologian review. |
| strike the shepherd | הָךְ אֶת־הָרֹעֶה | hakh et-ha-ro’eh | πάταξον τοὺς ποιμένας | Schlage den Hirten | Critical | Coming Messianic King (rejection motif) | 13:7 | Mandatory verbatim-match flag for future Matthew 26:31 rendering. |
| refined as silver/gold; one-third remnant | צָרַף / שְׁלִישִׁית | tsaraf / shlishit | πυρόω | läutern (“wie man Silber läutert”) | Medium | Sovereign Plan; Restoration | 13:8-9 | Stable rendering, low collision risk. |
| Day of the LORD | יוֹם…לַיהוה | yom…laYahweh | ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου | der Tag des HERRN | Critical | Sovereign Plan; Coming Messianic King (consummation) | 14:1 | Fixed OT technical eschatological term; needed for future Isaiah/Joel/Amos/Malachi cross-curriculum consistency. |
| the LORD will be king over all the earth | וְהָיָה יהוה לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־כָּל־הָאָרֶץ | v’hayah Yahweh l’melekh al-kol-ha’aretz | ἔσται κύριος εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν | der HERR wird König sein über die ganze Erde | Critical | Coming Messianic King (consummation) | 14:9 | Direct doctrinal payoff into baseline’s fixed universal_lordship_confession (Philippians 2:10-11); mandatory theologian review. |
| living waters | מַיִם חַיִּים | mayim chayim | ὕδωρ ζῶν | lebendiges Wasser | Medium-High | Restoration | 14:8 | Flag now for future consistency with John 4:10/7:38. |
| Holy to the LORD (everyday objects) | קֹדֶשׁ לַיהוה | qodesh laYahweh | ἅγιον τῷ κυρίῳ | Heilig dem HERRN | Medium-High | Restoration | 14:20-21 | Reuse baseline heilig; theologian review to avoid trivializing reading. |
| Feast of Booths (for all nations) | חַג הַסֻּכּוֹת | chag ha-sukkot | ἑορτὴ τῆς σκηνοπηγίας | das Laubhüttenfest | Medium | Restoration; Gentile inclusion | 14:16-19 | Historical-liturgical gloss needed; reuse Heiden/Völker framework. |
| no more trader/Canaanite in the house of the LORD | וְלֹא־יִהְיֶה כְנַעֲנִי עוֹד | v’lo-yihyeh Kena’ani od | οὐκ ἔσται ἔτι Χαναναῖος | kein Händler/Kanaaniter mehr | High | Restoration of the Temple | 14:21 | Transparent footnote distinguishing idiomatic “trader” sense from literal ethnonym; German historical-sensitivity considerations apply. |
C. Chapters Reviewed with No New Load-Bearing Terms
Per PRD full-book-coverage mandate, the following note applies where relevant: every chapter of Zechariah (1–14) introduces at least one new load-bearing term or reuses a baseline term in a doctrinally significant way; none is a “no new vocabulary” chapter. This is itself a notable feature of Zechariah as a curriculum book — its unusually dense concentration of distinct vision-units means no chapter is theologically inert. This has been confirmed by direct chapter-by-chapter review in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, Part B.
D. Priority Flags for Phase 2 (Step 2 Carry-Forward)
The following terms require immediate mandatory theologian review and priority back-translation checking, ranked by doctrinal centrality to this curriculum’s five assigned doctrines:
- durchbohrt (pierced, 12:10) — assigned core doctrine by name; MT/LXX divergence; John 19:37 verbatim-match requirement.
- der Spross (the Branch, 3:8; 6:12) — Coming Messianic King; union of royal/priestly office.
- Eifer (zeal, 1:14; 8:2) — God’s Zeal for Zion assigned doctrine by name; “Eifersucht” forbidden substitution.
- König (king, 9:9) plus the full v.9-10 messianic-king cluster — core passage.
- der HERR wird König sein über die ganze Erde (14:9) — consummation payoff of the core passage’s v.10.
- dreißig Silberstücke (11:12) and Schlage den Hirten (13:7) — future NT shared-citation verbatim-match flags.
- das Blut deines Bundes (9:11) — future Words of Institution verbatim-match flag.
- Heiden vs. Völker context-sensitive decision — applies at 2:11, 8:23, 9:10, 14:16 collectively; mandatory historical-sensitivity flag at each occurrence regardless of final word choice, per the existing baseline escalation rule.
This glossary supplements, and must be read alongside, analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md. All entries here are proposed for formal addition to translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json in Step 2 of the TRI pipeline.
Critical Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: Gnade
Transliteration: Gnade
Doctrine: Grace / The Piercing of the One They Have Pierced
Rejected alternatives: Barmherzigkeit, Wohlwollen
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Reused at Zechariah 4:7 (‘Grace, grace to it!’) and critically at 12:10 (‘Spirit of grace’) where it must retain the unmerited, God-initiated sense: the mourning over the pierced one is itself a gift, not self-generated remorse.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: gerecht
Transliteration: gerecht
Doctrine: The Coming Messianic King
Rejected alternatives: Tugend, gut, anständig
Original: צַדִּיק
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package (Gerechtigkeit/gerecht), unchanged. Zechariah 9:9 describes the coming king as ‘gerecht’ — must retain the forensic/covenantal weight already fixed for Gerechtigkeit so the king’s righteousness reads in continuity with the righteousness later credited to believers (Romans 1:17; 4:3), not flattened to generic civic virtue.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Rettung
Transliteration: Rettung
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Heil (Nazi-era contamination risk), Erlösung
Original: נוֹשָׁע
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged, for the general sōtēria concept. See the DISTINCT entry ‘kings_salvation_nosha’ below for the specific Zechariah 9:9 term (nosha’), which requires separate handling due to the Hebrew passive voice and the Luther liturgical tradition.
Lord
Approved rendering: Herr
Transliteration: Herr
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD and the Consummated Universal Kingship
Rejected alternatives: Meister, Chef
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged for title/address use (Adonai-type contexts). See the DISTINCT entry ‘lord_tetragrammaton’ below documenting the OT-specific small-caps ‘HERR’ convention for the Tetragrammaton, which the NT-only baseline did not need to address.
Kings Salvation Nosha
Approved rendering: ein Helfer (gerecht und ein Helfer)
Transliteration: ein Helfer
Doctrine: The Coming Messianic King
Rejected alternatives: Retter (premature collapse into a bare christological title), geholfen/gerettet (too weak for the liturgical register)
NEW. Zechariah 9:9’s nosha’ (Niphal passive participle: ‘saved/vindicated,’ not ‘saving’). German-specific decision point: Luther’s historic Palm Sunday liturgical rendering is the active ‘ein Helfer’; recommend ‘gerecht und ein Helfer’ with a mandatory teaching note clarifying the passive Hebrew sense (delivered/vindicated by God) so it is not misread as a bare title collapsing prematurely into ‘Retter.’ Mandatory theologian review given direct overlap with the Critical-risk baseline salvation doctrine and the Heil-avoidance rule.
The Branch
Approved rendering: der Spross
Transliteration: der Spross
Doctrine: The Branch and the Union of Royal and Priestly Office
Rejected alternatives: der Zweig (more literal, flatter; retained as acceptable reviewer-discretion alternative only)
Original: צֶמַח
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 3:8; 6:12 (tsemach). The single most doctrinally load-bearing new term in the book. Must be treated as a fixed messianic title with the same discipline as Messias/Sohn Gottes, NOT as generic botanical vocabulary. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence; always cross-reference Nachkomme Davids.
Thirty Pieces Of Silver
Approved rendering: dreißig Silberstücke
Transliteration: dreißig Silberstücke
Doctrine: The Rejected Shepherd and the Betrayal Motif
Original: שְׁלֹשִׁים כֶּסֶף
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 11:12. Mandatory verbatim-consistency flag with the future Matthew curriculum’s rendering of Matthew 27:9-10 (shared-citation verbatim-match discipline).
Pierced
Approved rendering: durchbohrt
Transliteration: durchbohrt
Doctrine: The Piercing of the One They Have Pierced
Rejected alternatives: verspottet (LXX-derived ‘mocked’ sense; would sever the John 19:37 citation link)
Original: אֵת אֲשֶׁר־דָּקָרוּ
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 12:10 — assigned core doctrine by name. MANDATORY shared-citation verbatim-match with the established German NT tradition at John 19:37 (‘den sie durchbohrt haben’). The MT/LXX divergence (piercing vs. mockery) must be transparently flagged for theologian review. Arguably the single highest-priority individual-word decision in the entire curriculum.
Strike The Shepherd
Approved rendering: Schlage den Hirten
Transliteration: Schlage den Hirten
Doctrine: The Rejected Shepherd and the Betrayal Motif
Original: הָךְ אֶת־הָרֹעֶה
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 13:7. Mandatory verbatim-consistency flag with the future Matthew curriculum’s rendering of Matthew 26:31. Reuses ‘der Hirte’ established at 11:4-17.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: der Tag des HERRN
Transliteration: der Tag des HERRN
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD and the Consummated Universal Kingship
Rejected alternatives: ein Tag (softens the fixed technical-term force)
Original: יוֹם…לַיהוה
Category: Kingdom
NEW. Zechariah 14:1. Fixed OT technical eschatological term; needed for future cross-curriculum consistency (Isaiah/Joel/Amos/Malachi). Must never be softened into a generic ‘ein Tag’ or vague future hope.
Lord King Over All Earth
Approved rendering: und der HERR wird König sein über die ganze Erde
Transliteration: und der HERR wird König sein über die ganze Erde
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD and the Consummated Universal Kingship
Original: וְהָיָה יהוה לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־כָּל־הָאָרֶץ
Category: Kingdom
NEW. Zechariah 14:9. Direct doctrinal payoff into the baseline’s fixed universal_lordship_confession (‘Jesus Christus ist der Herr,’ Philippians 2:10-11) — must be taught as the same reign, not a separate concept. Mandatory theologian review.
Lord Tetragrammaton
Approved rendering: HERR
Transliteration: HERR
Doctrine: The Divine Name (Tetragrammaton) and the HERR/Herr Convention
Rejected alternatives: Jehova (Jehovah’s Witness Neue-Welt-Übersetzung rendering — never echo)
Original: יהוה
Category: God
NEW orthographic convention, not present in the NT-only baseline. Small-caps/all-caps ‘HERR’ renders the Tetragrammaton (YHWH) throughout Zechariah, distinct from lowercase ‘Herr’ used for the title (Adonai) or ordinary address. Must be documented explicitly for Phase 2 translators and applied consistently throughout, especially given the baseline’s Critical-risk caution that ‘Herr’ doubles as the everyday German title ‘Mr.’ with no protective alternative honorific.
High Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: Friede
Transliteration: Friede
Doctrine: The Coming Messianic King
Inherited from Romans package (Low risk there for Romans 5:1), elevated to High in Zechariah because it recurs at 9:10 (‘he shall speak peace to the nations’) and 6:13 (‘council of peace’) as part of the Critical-risk Coming Messianic King doctrine cluster and the sensitive Heiden/Völker decision.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: Heiden
Transliteration: Heiden
Doctrine: The Nations Seeking the LORD and Sharing in Restoration
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged as the DEFAULT baseline rendering. In Zechariah, however, the register is overwhelmingly positive (nations joining the LORD, receiving peace, keeping the Feast of Booths) which HEIGHTENS rather than reduces the pejorative risk of this term. See the separate ‘gentiles_nations_volker’ entry below, which this curriculum recommends as the PRIMARY rendering for Zechariah’s occurrences; ‘Heiden’ is reserved for any explicit covenant-status-contrast context.
Covenant
Approved rendering: Bund
Transliteration: Bund
Doctrine: The Blood of the Covenant and Hope for the Captives
Original: בְּרִית
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (Medium risk there), elevated to High in Zechariah because 9:11’s ‘blood of your covenant’ creates a mandatory cross-reference to the baseline’s fixed words_of_institution term (Matthew 26:26-28); vocabulary must remain identical across the curriculum trajectory.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Heiliger Geist
Transliteration: Heiliger Geist
Doctrine: Restoration Accomplished by God’s Spirit, Not Human Might
Original: רוּחִי
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (Medium risk there), elevated to High in Zechariah because the full devotional formula at 4:6 (‘Nicht durch Heer und nicht durch Kraft, sondern durch meinen Geist’) must match established Lutherbibel-tradition phrasing essentially verbatim; also reused at 12:10 (‘Spirit of grace’).
Holy
Approved rendering: heilig
Transliteration: heilig
Doctrine: Holiness Extended to Ordinary, Everyday Life
Rejected alternatives: rein
Original: קֹדֶשׁ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (Medium risk there), elevated to High in Zechariah because of 14:20-21’s extension of the term to ordinary horse-bells and cooking pots, which risks either trivializing dilution or silent softening into a vaguer ‘geweiht’ if not carefully taught as the maximal extension of holiness, continuous with the baseline’s sanctification doctrine.
Sin
Approved rendering: Sünde
Transliteration: Sünde
Doctrine: The Cleansing Fountain as Atonement’s Forward Sign
Original: חַטָּאָה
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package (High risk there), retained at High in Zechariah 13:1’s cleansing fountain, the direct textual sequel to the Critical-risk piercing doctrine of 12:10 — must not be flattened into a generic, disconnected forgiveness statement.
Repentance
Approved rendering: Buße
Transliteration: Buße
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance and Covenant Return
Inherited from Romans/Matthew package (High risk there, confessional history flagged), retained at High in Zechariah. See the DISTINCT entry ‘return_repentance’ below for the specific directional-relational Hebrew shuv construction at 1:3-4, which supplements rather than replaces this term.
Seed Of David
Approved rendering: Nachkomme Davids
Transliteration: Nachkomme Davids
Doctrine: The Davidic Line and Royal-Priestly Hope
Rejected alternatives: Same Davids (archaic/crude register)
Original: (conceptual: צֶמַח, tied to the Davidic line)
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (Medium risk there), elevated to High in Zechariah because it must be explicitly cross-referenced every time ‘der Spross’ (the Branch) is taught (3:8; 6:12), given this audience’s markedly lower OT genealogical literacy than the Romans curriculum assumed.
King Messianic
Approved rendering: König
Transliteration: König
Doctrine: The Coming Messianic King
Original: מַלְכֵּךְ
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 9:9, ‘dein König.’ ‘König’ is the only faithful rendering but is heavily secularized in everyday German (fairy tales, chess, Kaiser-memory) and carries no automatic sacred charge the way ‘Herr’ retains through liturgical use. Must be explicitly anchored to ‘Reich Gottes’ and ‘Nachkomme Davids’ in all teaching material.
Humble King
Approved rendering: demütig
Transliteration: demütig
Doctrine: The Coming Messianic King
Rejected alternatives: arm (material-poverty sense; loses the royal-paradox point)
Original: עָנִי
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 9:9’s ani. Prefer ‘demütig’ (character sense, matching the LXX’s πραΰς and Matthew 21:5) over bare ‘arm.’ Must be taught with the donkey imagery as one integrated sign of peaceable royal approach.
Angel Of The Lord
Approved rendering: der Engel des HERRN
Transliteration: der Engel des HERRN
Doctrine: The Angel of the LORD and the Heavenly Courtroom
Rejected alternatives: ein Engel (generic indefinite; loses the recurring, mediating figure)
Original: מַלְאַךְ יהוה
Category: God
NEW. Zechariah 1:11-13; 3:1-6. Must render with the definite article every time. Theologian review recommended given proximity to (but formal distinction from) later Christological pre-incarnate-appearance discussions; do not adjudicate that question in the translated text.
Zeal Of God
Approved rendering: Eifer
Transliteration: Eifer
Doctrine: God’s Zeal for Zion
Rejected alternatives: Eifersucht (FORBIDDEN — petty marital/social jealousy connotation in modern German inverts the doctrine)
Original: קִנְאָה
Category: God
NEW. Zechariah 1:14; 8:2 — assigned core doctrine by name. The single highest lexical-collision risk in the curriculum: ‘Eifersucht’ is one suffix away and is the everyday German word nearest to qin’ah, but would distort covenantal-protective love into divine insecurity. Must render identically at both occurrences and always be accompanied by explicit teaching on the covenant-marriage background of the metaphor.
Dwell Among
Approved rendering: Ich will in deiner Mitte wohnen
Transliteration: Ich will in deiner Mitte wohnen
Doctrine: Restoration of Jerusalem and the Temple
Original: שָׁכַנְתִּי בְתוֹכֵךְ
Category: God
NEW. Zechariah 2:10 (shakhan). Must be cross-referenced explicitly in teaching material to the baseline’s fixed word_became_flesh entry (John 1:14, ‘wohnte unter uns’) so learners see Zechariah’s promise as the trajectory the Incarnation fulfills.
Satan Accuser
Approved rendering: der Satan
Transliteration: der Satan
Doctrine: The Angel of the LORD and the Heavenly Courtroom
Rejected alternatives: der Teufel (imports full later Christian demonological personification prematurely)
Original: הַשָּׂטָן
Category: Sovereign Plan
NEW. Zechariah 3:1-2 (ha-satan, with definite article, an office/role title as in Job 1-2). Must be glossed on first occurrence as an accuser-office title, distinguishing from later full NT demonology, without over-engineering the distinction — the load-bearing point is God’s gracious verdict overruling the accusation.
Not By Might But By Spirit
Approved rendering: Nicht durch Heer und nicht durch Kraft, sondern durch meinen Geist
Transliteration: Nicht durch Heer und nicht durch Kraft, sondern durch meinen Geist
Doctrine: Restoration Accomplished by God’s Spirit, Not Human Might
Original: לֹא בְחַיִל וְלֹא בְכֹחַ כִּי בְרוּחִי
Category: God
NEW. Zechariah 4:6. Widely known devotional formula; must match established Lutherbibel-tradition phrasing essentially verbatim. Direct parallel to the baseline’s power_of_god_for_salvation doctrine (Romans 1:16), here specified as Spirit-power for temple restoration.
Nations Joining Lord
Approved rendering: und viele Völker werden sich dem HERRN anschließen
Transliteration: und viele Völker werden sich dem HERRN anschließen
Doctrine: The Nations Seeking the LORD and Sharing in Restoration
Original: וְנִלְווּ גוֹיִם רַבִּים אֶל־יהוה
Category: Church
NEW. Zechariah 2:11. Applies the Heiden/Völker decision framework; favors ‘Völker’ given the positive, inclusion-oriented register. Mandatory Juden/Heiden historical-sensitivity flag per the baseline’s existing escalation rule.
Ten Men Nations Grasping Robe
Approved rendering: zehn Männer…den Rocksaum eines jüdischen Mannes
Transliteration: zehn Männer…den Rocksaum eines jüdischen Mannes
Doctrine: The Nations Seeking the LORD and Sharing in Restoration
Original: וְהֶחֱזִיקוּ עֲשָׂרָה אֲנָשִׁים מִכֹּל לְשֹׁנוֹת הַגּוֹיִם … בִּכְנַף אִישׁ יְהוּדִי
Category: Church
NEW. Zechariah 8:23. A concrete, physical gesture of Gentile nations seeking covenant fellowship. Mandatory Juden/Heiden historical-sensitivity flag despite the passage’s positive tone.
Blood Of Covenant
Approved rendering: das Blut deines Bundes
Transliteration: das Blut deines Bundes
Doctrine: The Blood of the Covenant and Hope for the Captives
Original: דַּם־בְּרִיתֵךְ
Category: Covenant
NEW. Zechariah 9:11. Mandatory cross-reference to the baseline’s fixed words_of_institution term (Matthew 26:26-28) for vocabulary consistency across the curriculum trajectory.
Shepherd
Approved rendering: der Hirte
Transliteration: der Hirte
Doctrine: The Rejected Shepherd and the Betrayal Motif
Original: רֹעֶה
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 11:4-17; 13:7. Fixed now for future consistency with John’s ‘good shepherd’ material (John 10:11,14). Native speaker plus theologian review recommended given direct NT payoff (Matthew 26:31).
Potter
Approved rendering: der Töpfer
Transliteration: der Töpfer
Doctrine: The Rejected Shepherd and the Betrayal Motif
Original: הַיּוֹצֵר
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 11:13 (MT). The LXX diverges here (‘the smelting furnace’) at exactly the point the NT (Matthew 27:7-10, potter’s field) draws on this material; flag transparently, do not silently harmonize.
Spirit Of Grace And Supplication
Approved rendering: Geist der Gnade und des Flehens
Transliteration: Geist der Gnade und des Flehens
Doctrine: The Piercing of the One They Have Pierced
Rejected alternatives: Fürbitte (established for intercession-for-others; sense here is closer to personal pleading)
Original: רוּחַ חֵן וְתַחֲנוּנִים
Category: Salvation
NEW. Zechariah 12:10. Reuse the baseline’s Gnade exactly for chen (unmerited, God-initiated). Render tachanunim as ‘Flehen [um Erbarmen].’ High risk given the direct grace-doctrine overlap.
Fountain Cleansing
Approved rendering: eine Quelle…zur Reinigung von Sünde und Unreinheit
Transliteration: eine Quelle…zur Reinigung von Sünde und Unreinheit
Doctrine: The Cleansing Fountain as Atonement’s Forward Sign
Original: מַעְיָן … לְחַטָּאָה וּלְנִדָּה
Category: Salvation
NEW. Zechariah 13:1. Direct textual sequel to the piercing of 12:10; keep concrete (an actual cleansing spring within the vision) rather than abstracting into generic forgiveness.
Living Waters
Approved rendering: lebendiges Wasser
Transliteration: lebendiges Wasser
Doctrine: Restoration of Jerusalem and the Temple
Original: מַיִם חַיִּים
Category: Restoration
NEW. Zechariah 14:8. Flag now for future cross-consistency with John 4:10/7:38, where Jesus uses the same self-description; do not let this rendering drift in future curricula.
Holy To The Lord
Approved rendering: Heilig dem HERRN
Transliteration: Heilig dem HERRN
Doctrine: Holiness Extended to Ordinary, Everyday Life
Original: קֹדֶשׁ לַיהוה
Category: God
NEW. Zechariah 14:20-21. Reuses the baseline’s heilig exactly; theologian review to ensure the everyday-object application reads as maximal extension of holiness, not trivializing dilution.
No Trader Canaanite
Approved rendering: kein Händler mehr im Haus des HERRN
Transliteration: kein Händler mehr im Haus des HERRN
Doctrine: Restoration of Jerusalem and the Temple
Original: וְלֹא־יִהְיֶה כְנַעֲנִי עוֹד בְּבֵית־יהוה
Category: Church
NEW. Zechariah 14:21. Requires an explicit historical-linguistic footnote distinguishing the idiomatic ‘trader/merchant’ sense from the literal ethnonym ‘Kanaaniter,’ given Germany’s heightened historical sensitivity to language that could be misheard as ethnic-exclusion.
Return Repentance
Approved rendering: Kehrt um zu mir…so kehre ich zu euch um
Transliteration: Kehrt um zu mir…so kehre ich zu euch um
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance and Covenant Return
Rejected alternatives: bare Buße (loses the directional-relational shuv sense)
Original: שׁוּבוּ אֵלַי … וְאָשׁוּב אֲלֵיכֶם
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Zechariah 1:3-4 (shuv). Hebrew shuv is more directional-relational (‘turn/return’) than the baseline’s fixed Buße (rendering Greek metanoia). Supplement, do not replace, the baseline term; gloss the connection for cross-book consistency.
Dominion Sea To Sea
Approved rendering: seine Herrschaft von Meer zu Meer
Transliteration: seine Herrschaft von Meer zu Meer
Doctrine: The Coming Messianic King
Rejected alternatives: sein Reich von Meer zu Meer (prefer Herrschaft to reduce Reich-compound exposure per the language landscape’s Reich caution)
Original: וּמָשְׁלוֹ מִיָּם עַד־יָם
Category: Kingdom
NEW. Zechariah 9:10. Must be explicitly connected in teaching material to the baseline’s fixed Reich Gottes so learners see this is the same reign, consummated only at 14:9.
Peace To Nations
Approved rendering: und er wird den Völkern Frieden verkünden
Transliteration: und er wird den Völkern Frieden verkünden
Doctrine: The Coming Messianic King
Rejected alternatives: Heiden (heightens the pejorative risk in this positive, peace-bestowing register)
Original: וְדִבֶּר שָלוֹם לַגּוֹיִם
Category: Kingdom
NEW. Zechariah 9:10. Reuses baseline Friede for shalom exactly. For goyim, this verse’s positive register heightens the baseline’s documented pejorative risk of Heiden; recommend Völkern here. Mandatory native-speaker/theologian review per the baseline’s Juden/Heiden escalation rule.
Gentiles Nations Volker
Approved rendering: Völker
Transliteration: Völker
Doctrine: The Nations Seeking the LORD and Sharing in Restoration
Rejected alternatives: Heiden (baseline default; heightened pejorative risk in Zechariah’s overwhelmingly positive register)
NEW, context-sensitive companion to the inherited baseline ‘gentiles’ entry. Primary recommended rendering across Zechariah’s nations-inclusion occurrences (2:11; 8:23; 9:10; 14:16), reserving ‘Heiden’ for any explicit covenant-status-contrast context. Mandatory Juden/Heiden historical-sensitivity flag applies regardless of which German word is finally chosen, per the baseline’s existing escalation rule.
Medium Risk Terms
Israel
Approved rendering: Israel
Transliteration: Israel
Doctrine: Restoration of Jerusalem and the Temple
Original: יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Implicit throughout Zechariah as the covenant people addressed.
Glory
Approved rendering: Herrlichkeit
Transliteration: Herrlichkeit
Doctrine: Restoration of Jerusalem and the Temple
Original: כָבוֹד
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Zechariah 2:5: God himself, not a rebuilt wall, will be Jerusalem’s true defense and honor.
Donkey Procession
Approved rendering: reitend auf einem Esel, auf einem Füllen, dem Jungen einer Eselin
Transliteration: reitend auf einem Esel, auf einem Füllen, dem Jungen einer Eselin
Doctrine: The Coming Messianic King
Original: וְרֹכֵב עַל־חֲמוֹר וְעַל־עַיִר בֶּן־אֲתֹנוֹת
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 9:9. Match the established Lutherbibel Palm Sunday reading tradition as closely as possible. Keep the parallelism legible as one animal described twice, not two separate animals.
Daughter Of Zion
Approved rendering: Tochter Zion
Transliteration: Tochter Zion
Doctrine: The Coming Messianic King
Rejected alternatives: Bevölkerung Zions (abstraction; loses personification)
Original: בַּת־צִיּוֹן
Category: Church
NEW. Zechariah 9:9. Fixed opening line of the widely sung German Advent chorale ‘Tochter Zion, freue dich’ and the fixed Palmsonntag Gospel companion text. Deviation would break instant congregational recognition; teaching material must make explicit that the hymn’s Advent placement conveys only the humble first-advent half of the oracle, not v.10’s global consummation.
Horns Power
Approved rendering: Horn / Hörner
Transliteration: Horn / Hörner
Doctrine: Visions of God’s Sovereign Plan for His People
Original: קֶרֶן / קְרָנוֹת
Category: Kingdom
NEW. Zechariah 1:18-21 (Eng.). Stock OT power-metaphor; requires a brief gloss since the idiom is not self-evident to a modern German reader outside established biblical usage.
Filthy Garments Clean Turban
Approved rendering: schmutzige Kleider / reiner Kopfbund
Transliteration: schmutzige Kleider / reiner Kopfbund
Doctrine: The Angel of the LORD and the Heavenly Courtroom
Original: בְּגָדִים צֹאִים / צָנִיף טָהוֹר
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Zechariah 3:3-5. Keep concrete (real garments in a real vision); consistent with the baseline’s discipline against flattening concrete OT vision-imagery into abstraction.
Stone Seven Eyes
Approved rendering: der Stein…sieben Augen
Transliteration: der Stein…sieben Augen
Doctrine: The Branch and the Union of Royal and Priestly Office
Original: הָאֶבֶן … שִׁבְעָה עֵינָיִם
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 3:9; cf. 4:10. Keep the numeral symbolism (seven = completeness) explicit in teaching gloss rather than resolving into a flat ‘God sees everything’ paraphrase.
Lampstand Two Anointed
Approved rendering: der Leuchter / die zwei Gesalbten
Transliteration: der Leuchter / die zwei Gesalbten
Doctrine: Restoration of Jerusalem and the Temple
Original: מְנוֹרָה / שְׁנֵי בְנֵי הַיִּצְהָר
Category: Restoration
NEW. Zechariah 4:2-3, 11-14. Gloss ‘die zwei Gesalbten’ against the baseline’s Messias vocabulary to distinguish these two human office-holders (Zerubbabel, Joshua) from the singular future messianic Branch.
Flying Scroll Curse
Approved rendering: die fliegende Schriftrolle / der Fluch
Transliteration: die fliegende Schriftrolle / der Fluch
Doctrine: Visions of God’s Sovereign Plan for His People
Original: מְגִלָּה עָפָה / הָאָלָה
Category: Sovereign Plan
NEW. Zechariah 5:1-3. Shares a German root with the baseline’s Critical-risk Fluch des Gesetzes (Galatians) but must be kept a distinct teaching context — covenant-community purification, not the Mosaic law’s condemning verdict.
Wickedness Personified
Approved rendering: die Bosheit / die Gottlosigkeit
Transliteration: die Bosheit / die Gottlosigkeit
Doctrine: Visions of God’s Sovereign Plan for His People
Original: הָרִשְׁעָה
Category: Sovereign Plan
NEW. Zechariah 5:5-11. Keep the personification and physical-removal imagery (a woman sealed in a grain-measure, carried to Shinar) concrete and visual in teaching material.
Council Of Peace
Approved rendering: ein Rat des Friedens
Transliteration: ein Rat des Friedens
Doctrine: The Branch and the Union of Royal and Priestly Office
Original: וַעֲצַת שָׁלוֹם תִּהְיֶה בֵּין שְׁנֵיהֶם
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 6:13. Reuses the baseline’s Friede within the compound construction; native-speaker review recommended for natural German phrasing.
Justice Kindness Mercy
Approved rendering: wahres Recht, Güte/Treue und Erbarmen
Transliteration: wahres Recht, Güte/Treue und Erbarmen
Doctrine: True Justice, Kindness, and Mercy as Restoration’s Ethical Fruit
Rejected alternatives: Gnade (reserved for chen/charis; would conflate two distinct Hebrew concepts under one German word)
Original: מִשְׁפַּט אֱמֶת … חֶסֶד וְרַחֲמִים
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Zechariah 7:9-10; 8:16-17 (chesed). No single German word captures the covenant-loyalty-plus-kindness sense; render as a doubled phrase. Curriculum-wide (not Zechariah-specific) translation challenge throughout the Prophets. Guard against Werkgerechtigkeit misreading — ethical transformation is restoration’s fruit, not its substitute.
Prisoners Of Hope
Approved rendering: Gefangene der Hoffnung
Transliteration: Gefangene der Hoffnung
Doctrine: The Blood of the Covenant and Hope for the Captives
Rejected alternatives: hoffnungsvolle Gefangene (smooths away the deliberate oxymoron)
Original: אֲסִירֵי הַתִּקְוָה
Category: Covenant
NEW. Zechariah 9:12. Preserve the oxymoron intact — the tension itself is the rhetorical and pastoral point.
Cornerstone Tent Peg
Approved rendering: der Eckstein / der Zeltpflock
Transliteration: der Eckstein / der Zeltpflock
Doctrine: The Davidic Line and Royal-Priestly Hope
Original: פִּנָּה / יָתֵד
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 10:4. ‘Eckstein’ has strong existing German theological currency; flag for future cross-curriculum consistency (e.g. Ephesians 2:20-type material). ‘Zeltpflock’ needs a brief nomadic-tent-imagery gloss.
Refined As Silver Remnant
Approved rendering: läutern
Transliteration: läutern
Doctrine: Visions of God’s Sovereign Plan for His People
Original: צְרַפְתִּים כִּצְרֹף אֶת־הַכֶּסֶף
Category: Sovereign Plan
NEW. Zechariah 13:8-9. Stable, low-collision rendering for refining-by-fire imagery describing the purified one-third remnant.
Feast Of Booths
Approved rendering: das Laubhüttenfest
Transliteration: das Laubhüttenfest
Doctrine: The Nations Seeking the LORD and Sharing in Restoration
Rejected alternatives: Fest der Hütten (invented literal calque; severs helpful connection to living Jewish practice)
Original: חַג הַסֻּכּוֹת
Category: Church
NEW. Zechariah 14:16-19. Established German name shared with the contemporary Jewish festival (Sukkot); brief historical-liturgical gloss needed. Apply Heiden/Völker decision framework, favoring ‘Völker.‘
River To Ends Of Earth
Approved rendering: vom Strom bis an die Enden der Erde
Transliteration: vom Strom bis an die Enden der Erde
Doctrine: The Coming Messianic King
Rejected alternatives: a modern river name (rejected — would misrepresent the fixed OT idiom for the Euphrates)
Original: וּמִנָּהָר עַד־אַפְסֵי־אָרֶץ
Category: Kingdom
NEW. Zechariah 9:10. ‘Der Strom’ with definite article matches the Hebrew idiom for the Euphrates; requires a brief teaching gloss for low OT geographic literacy.
Four Chariots
Approved rendering: die vier Wagen
Transliteration: die vier Wagen
Doctrine: Visions of God’s Sovereign Plan for His People
NEW. Zechariah 6:1-8. Vision of four chariots dispatched to the four winds; keep concrete vision-imagery, with brief gloss on the horses’ symbolic coloring, consistent with the baseline’s discipline against premature abstraction of vision material.
Low Risk Terms
David
Approved rendering: David
Transliteration: David
Doctrine: The Davidic Line and Royal-Priestly Hope
Original: דָּוִיד
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Standard proper-name reuse; occurs at Zechariah 12:7,8,10,12 and 13:1.
Prophet
Approved rendering: Prophet
Transliteration: Prophet
Doctrine: False Worship, Idolatry, and False Prophecy Purged
Original: נָבִיא / הַנְּבִיאִים
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Contrastive use at Zechariah 13:2-6 (false prophets cut off and put to shame).
Prophecy
Approved rendering: Weissagung
Transliteration: Weissagung
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: (the whole book’s massa/vision-oracle genre)
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Applies to Zechariah’s oracles as a whole (massa/vision-oracle genre) for cross-reference to later-fulfilled prophecy in future curricula.
Daughter Of Jerusalem
Approved rendering: Tochter Jerusalem
Transliteration: Tochter Jerusalem
Doctrine: The Coming Messianic King
Original: בַּת־יְרוּשָׁלַםִ
Category: Church
NEW. Zechariah 9:9. Parallel personification to Tochter Zion; must not be varied to a different construction so the Hebrew parallelism remains perceptible.
Sons Of Zion Greece
Approved rendering: Söhne Zions…Söhne Griechenlands
Transliteration: Söhne Zions…Söhne Griechenlands
Doctrine: God’s Sovereign Plan over the Nations and History
Original: בְּנֵי צִיּוֹן … בְּנֵי יָוָן
Category: Kingdom
NEW. Zechariah 9:13 (Yavan = Greece). Brief historical footnote on the likely Hellenistic-era/Maccabean reference is appropriate given low intertestamental literacy; should not be over-expanded.
Idols Diviners
Approved rendering: Götzen / Wahrsager
Transliteration: Götzen / Wahrsager
Doctrine: False Worship, Idolatry, and False Prophecy Purged
Original: אֱלִילִים / קֹסְמִים
Category: Sovereign Plan
NEW. Zechariah 10:2. Stable, low-collision German biblical-vocabulary terms.
Mourning Hadad Rimmon
Approved rendering: wie die Klage um Hadad-Rimmon
Transliteration: wie die Klage um Hadad-Rimmon
Doctrine: The Piercing of the One They Have Pierced
Rejected alternatives: a modern-analog substitution (rejected — would misrepresent the text’s own obscurity)
Original: כְּמִסְפֵּד הֲדַד־רִמּוֹן
Category: Christology
NEW. Zechariah 12:11. Transliterate the place-name with a brief explanatory footnote noting its obscurity.
Shinar
Approved rendering: Schinar
Transliteration: Schinar
Doctrine: Visions of God’s Sovereign Plan for His People
NEW. Zechariah 5:11, the land to which the personified Wickedness is carried. Transliterate per established German OT convention (Genesis 10:10; 11:2), with a footnote identifying it as Babylon/Babylonia.
