Core Glossary — Judges (Richter)
Per-Term Translation Risk Table, Full-Book Citation
Curriculum: Judges
Destination language: German
Baseline authority: translation_memory.json (Romans Language Package) — all terms marked “Reused from baseline” MUST use the exact recorded German rendering. All other terms are NEW entries proposed for this curriculum’s extension of translation memory and require theologian/native-speaker sign-off per the risk tier shown before being added to translation memory at the next version increment.
Risk tiers follow doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions: Critical = mandatory theologian review every occurrence; High = mandatory theologian review; Medium = native speaker review recommended; Low = automated review sufficient.
A. Terms Reused Exactly from the Romans Baseline
| Term (EN) | Original | German rendering (baseline, reused exactly) | Risk (baseline) | Judges occurrences | Notes for this curriculum |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| sin | חָטָא / חַטָּאת (Heb.) | Sünde | Medium | 10:10, 15 (“we have sinned”) | Same word-family as NT ἁμαρτία; Judges’ confession formula “we have sinned” reuses the baseline verb-family exactly |
| covenant | בְּרִית (Heb.) | Bund | High | 2:1-2, 20; 20:1 (assembly context) | Covenant-lawsuit framing of the whole cycle; foundational to “Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness” doctrine |
| god / God | אֱלֹהִים (Heb.) | Gott | Medium/Critical (context-dependent) | throughout | ”Other gods” (אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים) uses the same word as “God” (YHWH’s own designation) — disambiguate via definite/indefinite article and context; never let “die Götter” flatten into ambiguity with “Gott” |
| israel | יִשְׂרָאֵל (Heb.) | Israel | Medium | throughout | Reused exactly; note the baseline’s caution re: contemporary political conflation is less acute in a Judges-era historical-narrative context but should still be briefly noted for teaching material |
| father(s) [ancestral sense] | אָב / אָבוֹת (Heb.) | Väter / Vorfahren | Medium | 2:10, 12, 17, 19 | CAUTION: this is the ancestral sense, NOT the baseline’s doctrinal “Vater” (God as Father, adoption doctrine) — must be kept lexically distinct in context |
| prophet | נָבִיא (Heb.) | Prophet (masc.) / Prophetin (fem., new form) | Low | 4:4 (Deborah) | Feminine form is new; risk remains Low, consistent with baseline |
| salvation / saved / save | יָשַׁע (Heb.) | Rettung / retten / erretten | High/Critical | 2:16, 18; 3:9, 15, 31; 6:14-15, 36-37; 7:2, 7; 8:22; 10:1, 13-14; 12:2-3; 13:5 | Direct OT lexical root of NT σωτηρία; reuse baseline’s preference for Rettung over “Heil” exactly; flag typological (not identical-referent) relationship between OT military deliverance and NT eternal salvation |
| church [background note only] | ἐκκλησία (LXX rendering of קָהָל) | Gemeinde | High | 20:1 (background note) | Judges’ qahal (“assembly”) is the LXX ekklesia’s OT ancestor-word; flagged as background connection only — Judges’ qahal itself is glossed separately below (see B) as it is not identical in doctrinal content to NT ekklesia |
| grace | חֵן / חֶסֶד (Heb., conceptually) | Gnade | High | thematic (2:18; 10:16) | No single Hebrew term in the core passage is glossed as “grace,” but the doctrine “God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers” must be named using the baseline’s exact Gnade whenever the curriculum’s doctrinal commentary (not the biblical text itself) uses the word |
B. New Terms Proposed for This Curriculum (Not Yet in Baseline Translation Memory)
| Term (EN) | Hebrew | Translit. | Proposed German rendering | Doctrine risk | Doctrine(s) | Judges occurrences (chapters) | Rationale / Collision notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| judge (office) | שֹׁפֵט / שֹׁפְטִים | shophet / shophetim | Richter | Critical | Spirit’s Empowering of Judges; Grace through Flawed Deliverers | 2:16-19; 3-16 passim; book title | Established German Bible-tradition rendering (book title Buch der Richter) that MUST be retained for recognizability, but carries the highest false-friend risk in the whole curriculum: modern German “Richter” defaults to a courtroom professional judge, while the biblical office is overwhelmingly military/charismatic deliverer-leadership. Mandatory theologian-authored framing note required wherever the term is introduced |
| to judge / govern | שָׁפַט | shaphat | richten | High | (as above) | throughout | Verbal form of the above; same false-friend caution applies |
| LORD (tetragrammaton, YHWH) | יְהוָה | YHWH | HERR (rendered in the German Bible-tradition typographic convention of capitals/small-caps, distinct from “Herr”) | Critical | Lordship of Christ (baseline); extends the baseline’s existing “lord” Critical-risk entry | throughout (180+ occurrences) | Extends the baseline’s already-documented flattening risk for “Herr” (which doubles as the everyday “Mr.” with no protective honorific): German Bible tradition mitigates this specifically for YHWH by capitalizing “HERR” (vs. lower-case “Herr” for human/generic lord references and for κύριος in some traditions). This typographic distinction MUST be preserved through every layer of the Phase 2 pipeline (formatting must not be silently stripped), since losing it re-introduces the exact flattening risk the baseline already flags as unusually acute for German |
| the Spirit of the LORD [came upon] | רוּחַ יְהוָה | ruach YHWH | der Geist des HERRN [kam über ihn] | Critical | The Spirit’s Empowering of Judges | 3:10; 6:34; 11:29; 13:25; 14:6, 19; 15:14 | Distinct German phrase from the baseline’s “Heiliger Geist” (Trinity-formulated NT indwelling); doctrinally continuous with, but lexically and functionally distinct from, that entry — task-specific, temporary empowering rather than permanent indwelling. Mandatory theologian framing note at first occurrence (3:10) and reinforced at every subsequent occurrence |
| did evil in the sight of the LORD | הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה | ha-ra be’ene YHWH | taten, was dem HERRN missfiel | Critical | The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance | 2:11; 3:7, 12; 4:1; 6:1; 10:6; 13:1 | The book’s central structural refrain opening every cycle; must be rendered identically at every occurrence without exception |
| the LORD raised up | וַיָּקֶם יְהוָה | vayaqem YHWH | der HERR erweckte / ließ auftreten | High | The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance; Grace through Flawed Deliverers | 2:16, 18; 3:9, 15 | German “erwecken” doubles as resurrection-vocabulary (Lazarus, etc.); context must make clear this denotes commissioning to office, not raising the dead, though the underlying “God who raises up” motif may be noted as a canonical through-line |
| cried out to the LORD | וַיִּצְעֲקוּ אֶל־יְהוָה | vayitz’aku el-YHWH | schrien zum HERRN | High | The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance | 3:9, 15; 4:3; 6:6-7; 10:10 | Cycle-marker phrase; render identically at each occurrence |
| the anger of the LORD was kindled | וַיִּחַר־אַף יְהוָה | vayichar-af YHWH | der Zorn des HERRN entbrannte | High | The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance | 2:14, 20; 3:8; 10:7 | Judgment-hinge formula; established German idiom, must not be softened |
| sold [them] into the hand of | מָכַר בְּיַד | makar beyad | verkaufte [sie] in die Hand | Medium | The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance | 2:14; 3:8; 4:2 (via “sold them,” sense) | Commercial-legal judgment metaphor; retain concrete commercial verb; note contrast/resonance with NT redemption-purchase metaphors (Colossians 2:14, Matthew 20:28) which run in the opposite transactional direction |
| played the harlot [after other gods] | זָנָה אַחֲרֵי | zanah acharei | hurten…nach | Critical | Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness | 2:17; 8:27 | Deliberately crude, marriage-covenant-infidelity metaphor (parallel to the curriculum-established precedent of retaining Pauline crudeness, e.g. “Dreck” in Philippians, rather than genteel softening); mandatory pastoral framing note so the marriage-covenant metaphor is understood and the language is not received as merely vulgar or as a literal charge against a modern audience |
| king | מֶלֶךְ | melek | König | High | The Absence of a Righteous King | 8:22-23 (request/refusal); 9 (Abimelech); 17:6; 18:1 (implicit); 21:25 | New term; connects forward to the baseline’s Davidic Covenant and Kingdom of God doctrines and backward to Deuteronomy 17’s kingship law; central to the curriculum’s core doctrine of this book |
| rule / reign (theocratic) | מָשַׁל | mashal | herrschen | Critical | The Absence of a Righteous King | 8:23 (“the LORD shall rule over you”) | Load-bearing theocratic-ideal verse; keep sharply distinguished in German from the human “König” request; homographic (in unvocalized Hebrew) with the unrelated noun “mashal” (proverb, ch. 9) — a wordplay lost in German, worth a stylistic footnote |
| fable / parable [Jotham’s] | מָשָׁל | mashal | Gleichnis / Fabel | Medium | The Absence of a Righteous King | 9:8-15 | See above; German cannot preserve the Hebrew pun with “herrschen” |
| in those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes | אֵין מֶלֶךְ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל… אִישׁ הַיָּשָׁר בְּעֵינָיו יַעֲשֶׂה | ein melek beYisra’el… ish hayashar be’einav ya’aseh | In jenen Tagen gab es keinen König in Israel; jeder tat, was ihm selbst recht schien | Critical | The Absence of a Righteous King; Moral Decline and the Need for a Righteous King | 17:6; 21:25 (verbatim bookend) | THE defining refrain of this curriculum. Must be rendered verbatim-identically at both occurrences. Note the deliberate use of “recht” (correct/right, from yashar) rather than “gerecht” (righteous, which would import the distinct tsedeq root already Critical in the baseline as Gerechtigkeit) — thematically connected but lexically distinct; do not conflate in translation even while doctrinal commentary may legitimately bridge the two concepts |
| the angel of the LORD | מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה | mal’akh YHWH | der Engel des HERRN | Critical | (theophany question, background to several doctrines) | 2:1-5; 6:11-24; 13:3-21 | Recurs at three major structural hinges; disputed theophany identity (created angel vs. divine manifestation) flagged, not adjudicated, per this curriculum’s practice for other disputed Christological/theophanic texts |
| vow | נֶדֶר | neder | Gelübde | Critical | Grace through Flawed Deliverers | 11:30-40 | Jephthah’s rash vow and its ethically fraught fulfillment; mandatory theologian review; teaching material must state clearly that Scripture elsewhere forbids human sacrifice and must not present the narrative as divine sanction |
| Nazirite | נָזִיר | nazir | Nasiräer | Medium | (background to Grace through Flawed Deliverers, via Samson) | 13:5, 7; 16:17 | Established German biblical-technical term (Numbers 6); requires brief explanatory gloss |
| forced labor / tribute-levy | מַס | mas | Fronarbeit / Frondienst (avoid “Zwangsarbeit”) | High | (background to Apostasy — incomplete conquest) | 1:28, 30, 33, 35 | Distinctively German-culture caution: “Zwangsarbeit,” while lexically closer, carries strong Nazi-era historical contamination (Zwangsarbeiter), a collision of the same class the baseline already flags for “Heil” and “Gemeinschaft”; prefer the historically-distanced “Fronarbeit/Frondienst” |
| did not drive out / dispossess | לֹא הוֹרִישׁ | lo horish | vertrieben nicht / trieben nicht aus | High | Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness (roots) | 1:19, 21, 27-33 | Cumulative refrain cataloging incomplete conquest; render consistently across all seven occurrences |
| inheritance / (land) possession | נַחֲלָה | nachalah | Erbe / Erbteil | Medium | (background) | 2:6, 9; throughout ch. 1 | Covenant land-gift concept; distinct from but resonant with the baseline’s “adoption” doctrine’s inheritance-rights language |
| know [the LORD] (covenantal) | יָדַע | yada | kennen (never “wissen”) | High | Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness | 2:10 | Relational/experiential covenant-knowledge, not propositional fact-knowledge; German “kennen” vs. “wissen” is the exact fault line |
| moved to pity / relented | נִחַם (Niphal) | nicham | es tat dem HERRN leid / der HERR hatte Erbarmen | High | God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers | 2:18 | Anthropopathic compassion-language; must avoid implying divine capriciousness while preserving genuine relational compassion |
| the land had rest | וַתִּשְׁקֹט הָאָרֶץ | vatishqot ha’aretz | das Land hatte Ruhe | Low | The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance | 3:11, 30; 5:31; 8:28 | Cycle-completion marker; resonant with, but distinct from, the baseline’s “peace with God” doctrine |
| test / prove | נָסָה | nasah | prüfen (never “verführen”) | Medium | (background, Providence-adjacent) | 2:22; 3:1, 4 | Purposive divine testing, not entrapment; parallels the baseline’s Providence (Vorsehung) caution against a deist/impersonal reading |
| carved image / cast image | פֶּסֶל וּמַסֵּכָה | pesel u-massekhah | geschnitztes Bild und gegossenes Bild | High | Moral Decline and the Need for a Righteous King | 17:3-4; 18:14-20, 30-31 | Direct Decalogue echo (Exodus 20:4); flag for teaching material |
| ephod (idolatrous object) | אֵפוֹד | ephod | Efod | Medium | God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers (Gideon’s decline) | 8:24-27 | Technical priestly-garment term repurposed as an unauthorized idol; flag the irony (kingship refused, idolatry embraced) for teaching material |
| assembly / congregation | קָהָל | qahal | Versammlung / Gemeinde (Israels) | Medium | (background to Church as God’s People, contrastively) | 20:1 | LXX ancestor-word of ekklesia (baseline’s Gemeinde); here ironically convened for near-fratricidal civil war rather than worship — keep conceptually distinct from the NT ekklesia doctrine while noting the lexical descent |
| concubine | פִּילֶגֶשׁ | pilegesh | Nebenfrau | Medium (lexical) / High (content sensitivity) | Moral Decline and the Need for a Righteous King | 19:1-30 | Lexically straightforward; content of ch. 19 requires mandatory pastoral/teaching-material framing (sexual violence, murder) comparable to the baseline’s Matthew 27:25 and household-code cautions — accurate translation is not sufficient alone |
| turned back / relapsed | שׁוּב | shuv | fielen zurück / kehrten wieder um (negative sense) | High | The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance | 2:19 | Same root elsewhere denotes repentance (turning toward God); here denotes relapse (turning back to idolatry) — an ironic reuse worth surfacing in teaching material |
| more corrupt | שָׁחַת (Hiphil) | hishchit | verdarben sich mehr | Medium | Moral Decline and the Need for a Righteous King | 2:19 | Echoes Genesis 6’s pre-Flood universal corruption; flag the canonical echo |
| provoked to anger | כָּעַס (Hiphil) | hik’is | erzürnten / reizten… zum Zorn | High | Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness | 2:12 | Covenant-jealousy motif (cf. Deuteronomy 32) |
| abandoned / forsook | עָזַב | azab | verließen | High | Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness | 2:12, 13 | Covenant-breach vocabulary; must not be softened to a neutral “changed religion” |
| freewill offering [self] / volunteered | נָדַב (Hitpael) | hitnadev | sich freiwillig anbieten | Medium | (background, human response within grace) | 5:2, 9 | Voluntary participation theme alongside sovereign Spirit-empowering |
| Baal(s) | בַּעַל / בְּעָלִים | Ba’al / Be’alim | Baal / die Baale | Medium | Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness | 2:11, 13; 3:7; 6:25-32; 8:33; 10:6 | Transliterated proper noun; concrete historical Canaanite deity, not a generic “false god” abstraction |
| Ashtaroth / Astarte | עַשְׁתָּרוֹת | Ashtarot | die Astarten / Aschtarot | Medium | Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness | 2:13; 10:6 | Transliterated proper noun, paired formulaically with Baal(s) |
| Asherah | אֲשֵׁרָה | asherah | die Aschera | Medium | Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness | 6:25-30 | Cultic object/deity; Deuteronomy 7:5-mandated destruction |
| Shibboleth | שִׁבֹּלֶת | shibbolet | Schibbolet | Low | (cultural-linguistic footnote) | 12:5-6 | Origin of the common loanword; no independent doctrinal weight |
C. Cross-Reference Notes for Translation Memory Integration
- Book-title convention: Judges = Richter (German); cite as Richter 2,6 per the established comma-citation convention already fixed in the baseline’s cross-reference rules.
- Version increment: Adding this glossary’s ~30 new terms to
translation_memory.jsonshould increment the version number and record each new entry with the risk tier shown above; Critical and High entries require theologian sign-off before Phase 2 use, per the baseline’s existing enforcement priority order. - Consistency-critical refrains requiring verbatim repetition throughout Phase 2:
- “taten, was dem HERRN missfiel” (2:11; 3:7, 12; 4:1; 6:1; 10:6; 13:1)
- “der Geist des HERRN kam über ihn” (3:10; 6:34; 11:29; 13:25; 14:6, 19; 15:14)
- “In jenen Tagen gab es keinen König in Israel; jeder tat, was ihm selbst recht schien” (17:6; 21:25, verbatim)
- Typographic requirement: “HERR” (small-caps/all-caps convention for YHWH) must be preserved through all Phase 2 tooling; loss of this distinction re-introduces the baseline’s already-documented “Herr” flattening risk in an intensified form, since Judges’ YHWH-density is far higher than Romans’.
- No new vocabulary chapters (explicitly reviewed, not omitted): Judges 12:8-15 (minor judges Ibzan, Elon, Abdon), Judges 15 (Samson exploits — reuses ch. 14’s Spirit-empowering formula), and Judges 18 (Danite migration — reuses ch. 17’s idol/priesthood vocabulary) introduce no new load-bearing theological terms beyond those already catalogued for their preceding chapters.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Gott
Transliteration: Gott
Doctrine: Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness / Idolatry and False Worship
Original: אֱלֹהִים
Category: God
The generic Hebrew word for deity (Elohim), used both of YHWH himself and of ‘other gods’ (Baal, Ashtaroth, etc.) throughout Judges. Inherited from Romans package (baseline doctrine_risk: Medium in translation_memory.json, Critical in bible_term_registry.json); ELEVATED to Critical for this curriculum because Judges’ extremely high density of both usages side-by-side (e.g. Richter 2,12) makes the disambiguation risk more acute than anywhere in the NT baseline material. Never let ‘die Götter’ (idolatrous referent) flatten into ambiguity with ‘Gott’ (the true God); disambiguate via definite/indefinite article and surrounding context at every occurrence.
Lord
Approved rendering: Herr
Transliteration: Herr
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ (extended to Divine Name in Judges)
Rejected alternatives: Meister, Chef
‘Herr’ is also the ordinary everyday title ‘Mr.’ with no separate everyday honorific to protect the exalted sense. Judges dramatically intensifies this baseline risk because of the sheer density of the covenant name YHWH (180+ occurrences) — see the new Critical term ‘the_lord_yhwh_tetragrammaton’ below, which extends this entry via the German Bible-tradition typographic convention of capitalized ‘HERR’ for the divine name, distinct from lower-case ‘Herr’ for generic/human reference. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for the Judges curriculum.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Heiliger Geist
Transliteration: Heiliger Geist
Doctrine: The Spirit’s Empowering of Judges (contrast term)
The personal third Person of the Trinity; permanent NT indwelling. Judges never uses this phrase — it uses the lexically and functionally distinct OT formula ‘der Geist des HERRN kam über ihn’ (see new term ‘spirit_of_the_lord_came_upon’ below) for task-specific, temporary empowering. The two phrases must never be substituted for one another. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly, unchanged, as the contrast term that anchors this distinction.
Anathema
Approved rendering: verflucht
Transliteration: verflucht
Doctrine: The True Gospel versus False Gospels (cross-reference only)
Rejected alternatives: im Unrecht (merely mistaken)
Solemn NT curse-formula pronounced on anyone preaching a different gospel (Galatians 1:8-9). Judges’ ‘verflucht’ at Richter 5,23 (cursing Meroz, see new term ‘cursed_meroz’ below) uses the identical German word for a theologically distinct OT military-covenant-participation curse. The two must never be conflated when ‘verflucht’ recurs across this pipeline’s documents; flag for native-speaker/theologian review whenever this word appears in Judges material. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly, unchanged, as the cross-reference anchor for this distinction.
Curse Of The Law
Approved rendering: Fluch des Gesetzes
Transliteration: Fluch des Gesetzes
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose (cross-reference only)
The law’s own judicial curse-sanction (Galatians 3:10, 13), a judicial verdict never a folk-magic curse. Provides useful cross-reference vocabulary for teaching material explaining that Judges’ ‘Zorn des HERRN’ judgment-formula (the_lords_anger_kindled, below) is likewise judicial, tied to the Deuteronomic covenant sanctions (Deuteronomy 28), not arbitrary or magical. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly, unchanged, as background cross-reference.
Did Evil In The Sight Of The Lord
Approved rendering: taten, was dem HERRN missfiel
Transliteration: taten, was dem HERRN missfiel
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance
Rejected alternatives: machten Fehler (softens the covenant-lawsuit force into mere mistake-making)
Original: הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה
Category: Sin and Judgment
The book’s structural refrain opening every apostasy cycle (Richter 2,11; 3,7.12; 4,1; 6,1; 10,6; 13,1). Must be rendered identically at every occurrence to preserve the cyclical literary structure that is this book’s central didactic device and to anchor the ‘Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance’ doctrine.
Judge
Approved rendering: Richter
Transliteration: Richter
Doctrine: The Office of Judge
Rejected alternatives: Amtsrichter/Bundesrichter (courtroom false-friend), Anführer (loses the judicial/Spirit-appointed dimension entirely)
Original: שֹׁפֵט / שֹׁפְטִים
Category: Judgeship
A Spirit-empowered, God-appointed crisis-leader who rescues, governs, and restores order in the absence of a king; the book’s title office (Buch der Richter). Modern German ‘Richter’ defaults almost exclusively to a professional courtroom judge; the biblical shophet is overwhelmingly a military/charismatic deliverer whose judicial function is secondary. This is the highest false-friend density risk in the entire book; every occurrence requires sufficient surrounding context or a teaching note so German readers do not import a modern-courtroom mental image onto Ehud, Gideon, Jephthah, or Samson. The established title must nonetheless be retained for canonical recognizability.
Spirit Of The Lord Came Upon
Approved rendering: der Geist des HERRN kam über ihn
Transliteration: der Geist des HERRN kam über ihn
Doctrine: The Spirit’s Empowering of Judges
Rejected alternatives: Heiliger Geist (collapses OT task-specific empowering into NT permanent Trinitarian indwelling)
Original: רוּחַ יְהוָה (וַתְּהִי עָלָיו / וַתִּצְלַח עָלָיו)
Category: Holy Spirit (Old Testament Mode)
Task-specific, temporary divine empowering of a judge for a commissioned act of deliverance (Richter 3,10; 6,34; 11,29; 13,25; 14,6.19; 15,14), distinct from permanent NT indwelling. Doctrinally continuous with, but lexically and functionally distinct from, ‘Heiliger Geist’ — the same divine Spirit acting redemptively across both testaments, here in a revocable, task-specific mode (dramatized by Samson’s loss of empowering, ch. 16). Mandatory theologian framing note required at every occurrence, not only the first.
Rule Reign Theocratic
Approved rendering: herrschen
Transliteration: herrschen
Doctrine: Kingship and Theocracy
Rejected alternatives: regieren (secular-political register, loses theocratic force)
Original: מָשַׁל
Category: Kingship
To exercise sovereign governing authority; used in Gideon’s theocratic refusal, ‘der HERR soll über euch herrschen’ (Richter 8,23) — the single clearest theocratic statement in the book. Must be kept sharply distinguished in German from the human ‘König’ request debated in the same chapter. Homographic in unvocalized Hebrew with the unrelated noun mashal (‘proverb/fable’, ch. 9) — a wordplay lost in German, worth a stylistic footnote for teaching material.
No King In Israel Refrain
Approved rendering: In jenen Tagen gab es keinen König in Israel; jeder tat, was ihm selbst recht schien
Transliteration: In jenen Tagen gab es keinen König in Israel; jeder tat, was ihm selbst recht schien
Doctrine: The Absence of a Righteous King / Moral Decline and the Need for a Righteous King
Rejected alternatives: …jeder tat, was ihm selbst gerecht schien (FORBIDDEN — silently imports the baseline’s Critical-tier forensic-righteousness doctrine into a verse whose entire point is the absence of God-given righteousness)
Original: אֵין מֶלֶךְ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל אִישׁ הַיָּשָׁר בְּעֵינָיו יַעֲשֶׂה
Category: Kingship
The book’s own editorial verdict, forming a verbatim bookend (Richter 17,6; 21,25) around its darkest chapters. Must be rendered verbatim-identically at both occurrences — the single most important consistency requirement in the entire book. ‘Yashar’ (straight/right, a subjective self-assessment sense) is a distinct Hebrew root from ‘tsedeq’ (righteous, behind the baseline’s Critical-tier Gerechtigkeit); German ‘recht’ (never ‘gerecht’) preserves this lexical distinction, which doctrinal commentary may legitimately bridge toward Christ but the translated text itself must never blur. Mandatory hard validation rule forbidding substitution of ‘recht’ with ‘gerecht’ anywhere in this refrain or its immediate exposition.
Whored After
Approved rendering: hurten…nach
Transliteration: hurten…nach
Doctrine: Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: wandten sich ab (euphemistic softening — erases the covenant-infidelity force), waren untreu (loses the metaphor’s deliberate crudeness)
Original: זָנוּ אַחֲרֵי (זָנָה)
Category: Apostasy
Deliberately crude marriage-covenant-infidelity metaphor picturing Israel’s idolatry as marital unfaithfulness to YHWH (Richter 2,17; 8,27). Genuine German-culture collision risk: the Hebrew is deliberately shocking, matching Luther’s own rendering practice (cf. this pipeline’s ‘Dreck’/rubbish precedent from Philippians). Must be retained with full covenant-infidelity force while mandatory theologian-authored teaching material explains the marriage-covenant metaphor so the term is received as theologically loaded rather than merely vulgar.
Angel Of The Lord
Approved rendering: der Engel des HERRN
Transliteration: der Engel des HERRN
Doctrine: The Angel of the LORD: A Theophany Question
Rejected alternatives: ein Engel (indefinite article prejudges the theophany question toward the mere-created-messenger reading)
Original: מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה
Category: Theophany
A figure who speaks as YHWH in the first person and is worshiped/feared as divine presence itself, appearing at three major structural hinges (Richter 2,1-5; 6,11-24; 13,3-21). A genuinely disputed theological question (created angel versus pre-incarnate manifestation of the Son), flagged rather than adjudicated, consistent with this pipeline’s practice for other disputed Christological texts.
Vow
Approved rendering: Gelübde
Transliteration: Gelübde
Doctrine: Jephthah’s Vow and the Ethics of Rash Oaths
Rejected alternatives: Versprechen (too casual, loses the binding cultic-legal force)
Original: נֶדֶר
Category: Vow and Consecration
A binding, voluntary oath to God (Numbers 30, Deuteronomy 23:21-23); Jephthah’s rash vow and its tragic fulfillment (Richter 11,30-40) is among the most ethically fraught texts in the OT. Mandatory theologian review; teaching material must explicitly state that Scripture elsewhere unconditionally forbids human sacrifice (Leviticus 18:21; Deuteronomy 12:31) and must not allow the passage to be read as divine approval.
The Lord Yhwh Tetragrammaton
Approved rendering: HERR
Transliteration: HERR
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ (extended) / Divine Name
Rejected alternatives: Herr (lower-case — loses the typographic disambiguation from the everyday address title), Jehova (the Jehovah’s Witness Neue-Welt-Übersetzung rendering — never use)
Original: יְהוָה
Category: God
The covenant, personal name of the God of Israel, distinguished in the Hebrew text from generic ‘Elohim’ and used over 180 times in Judges. Extends the baseline’s already-documented flattening risk for ‘Herr’ (doubling as everyday ‘Mr.’). German Bible tradition mitigates this specifically for YHWH via capitalized ‘HERR’ (small-caps/all-caps) versus lower-case ‘Herr’ for human/generic reference. This typographic distinction must be preserved through every layer of the translation pipeline without exception, since Judges’ YHWH-density is far higher than Romans’.
High Risk Terms
Covenant
Approved rendering: Bund
Transliteration: Bund
Doctrine: Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Original: בְּרִית
Category: Covenant
A relational covenant bond, more than a legal contract. Judges 2:1-2’s angel-of-the-LORD rebuke frames the entire book’s cycle as a covenant lawsuit: apostasy is covenant-breach, deliverance is YHWH’s covenant-faithfulness despite Israel’s breach. Also occurs at Richter 20,1 (assembly context, background only). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for the Judges curriculum.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Rettung
Transliteration: Rettung
Doctrine: God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers
Rejected alternatives: Heil (Nazi-era contamination risk), Erlösung (more existential/liberation-flavored)
Deliverance and reconciliation with God through Christ’s death and resurrection in its NT sense; in Judges this noun anchors the doctrinal bridge to the book’s own verb ‘retten/erretten’ (see saved_delivered below), the direct OT lexical root of NT sōtēria. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for the Judges curriculum, never ‘Heil’ without explicit reviewer sign-off.
Church
Approved rendering: Gemeinde
Transliteration: Gemeinde
Doctrine: Tribal Disunity and Civil Conflict (background contrast)
Rejected alternatives: Kirche (institution-default)
The assembly of believers, the new covenant community, in its NT sense. Judges 20:1’s ‘qahal’ (Israel’s covenant assembly, convened here for near-fratricidal civil war rather than worship) is the LXX ancestor-word of ekklesia/Gemeinde but must be kept conceptually distinct from this NT doctrine — see the new term ‘assembly_congregation’ below, which uses ‘Versammlung’ as the primary Judges rendering specifically to prevent bleed-through. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly (unchanged) as background reference only.
Grace
Approved rendering: Gnade
Transliteration: Gnade
Doctrine: God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers
Rejected alternatives: Barmherzigkeit, Wohlwollen
Original: (no single Hebrew lexeme; conceptually חֵן / חֶסֶד)
Category: Grace
Unmerited favor from God toward sinners. No single Hebrew lexeme in Judges is glossed as ‘grace’ — the doctrine is a narrative inference from God raising up flawed deliverers despite Israel’s lack of merit, not a lexical fact. Reserve ‘Gnade’ strictly for doctrinal commentary/section headers (e.g. ‘Gottes Gnade an unvollkommenen Rettern’); NEVER insert it into the translated biblical text itself where the Hebrew does not use an equivalent term. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for the Judges curriculum.
Providence
Approved rendering: Vorsehung
Transliteration: Vorsehung
Doctrine: Providence and Purposive Testing (background)
God’s personal, purposive governance of all things; Enlightenment/deist German usage risks an impersonal-force reading. Judges’ own vocabulary for purposive testing uses the distinct new term ‘prüfen’ (test_prove, below) rather than ‘Vorsehung’ itself, but the doctrinal caution against a deist reading applies identically to Richter 2,22; 3,1.4. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for the Judges curriculum as background doctrinal reference.
Father
Approved rendering: Vater
Transliteration: Vater
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family (disambiguation anchor)
God as personal Father, in its NT doctrinal sense. Judges’ recurring ‘their fathers’ (ancestral sense, Richter 2,10.12.17.19) must be kept lexically and doctrinally distinct from this entry — see the new term ‘fathers_ancestral’ below, which uses ‘Väter/Vorfahren’ precisely to avoid collision with this doctrinally loaded baseline term. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly, unchanged, as the disambiguation anchor.
The Lords Anger Kindled
Approved rendering: der Zorn des HERRN entbrannte
Transliteration: der Zorn des HERRN entbrannte
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance
Rejected alternatives: der HERR war verstimmt/enttäuscht (too weak, loses judicial-wrath force)
Original: וַיִּחַר־אַף יְהוָה
Category: Sin and Judgment
Idiom (‘YHWH’s nose burned’) for YHWH’s righteous, covenant-enforcing wrath, marking the pivot from sin to judgment in each cycle (Richter 2,14.20; 3,8; 10,7). Established German Bible idiom; wrath is covenantal-judicial (Deuteronomy 28), never capricious rage.
Cried Out To The Lord
Approved rendering: schrien zum HERRN
Transliteration: schrien zum HERRN
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance
Original: וַיִּצְעֲקוּ אֶל־יְהוָה
Category: Sin and Judgment
The distress-cry that precipitates each deliverance (Richter 3,9.15; 4,3; 6,6-7; 10,10); a plea for rescue, not necessarily an articulated confession of sin. Must render identically at every cycle turning-point; grace, not merit, is shown to prompt deliverance.
The Lord Raised Up
Approved rendering: der HERR erweckte / ließ auftreten
Transliteration: der HERR erweckte / ließ auftreten
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance / God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers
Rejected alternatives: setzte ein (too weak, lacks the sovereign, unilateral-initiative force of the Hebrew qum-causative)
Original: וַיָּקֶם יְהוָה
Category: Sin and Judgment
YHWH’s sovereign, unilateral commissioning of a deliverer to office (Richter 2,16.18; 3,9.15), with no human electoral or hereditary process in view. German ‘erwecken’ also denotes raising the dead (Lazarus, John 11); context must make unmistakably clear this denotes commissioning to office, not resurrection, while the underlying ‘God who raises up’ motif may be noted pedagogically as a canonical through-line.
Turned Back Relapsed
Approved rendering: fielen zurück / kehrten wieder um
Transliteration: fielen zurück / kehrten wieder um
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance
Rejected alternatives: kehrten um (ambiguous — collides with the positive repentance sense of the same Hebrew root elsewhere)
Original: יָשֻׁבוּ (שׁוּב)
Category: Sin and Judgment
Israel’s relapse into idolatry after a judge’s death (Richter 2,19), using the same Hebrew root (shuv) elsewhere rendered ‘repent/return’ positively. German requires different idiomatic verbs for the two senses (‘sich bekehren’ vs. ‘rückfällig werden’); surface the ironic root-reuse explicitly in teaching material.
To Judge Govern
Approved rendering: richten
Transliteration: richten
Doctrine: The Office of Judge
Rejected alternatives: urteilen (too narrowly courtroom-forensic)
Original: שָׁפַט
Category: Judgeship
Verbal form of shophet: to exercise the comprehensive crisis-governance and deliverance function of a judge (Richter 4,4-5; 10,1-5; 12,7-15). Same courtroom false-friend caution as ‘Richter’ applies; Deborah’s case (4:5) is the clearest literal judicial-arbitration sense in the book.
King
Approved rendering: König
Transliteration: König
Doctrine: Kingship and Theocracy / The Absence of a Righteous King
Original: מֶלֶךְ
Category: Kingship
A hereditary sovereign human ruler over a settled political state; the office Israel requests of Gideon (Richter 8,22-23) and later grasps at illegitimately through Abimelech (ch. 9). New term not previously in the baseline; must be introduced with doctrinal notes connecting forward to the Davidic Covenant and Reich Gottes doctrines and backward to Deuteronomy 17’s not-yet-realized kingship law. German ‘König’ carries centuries of monarchical and post-1918 republican historical resonance that must not distract from the text’s covenant-theological point.
Abandoned Forsook
Approved rendering: verließen
Transliteration: verließen
Doctrine: Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: wandten sich ab (too neutral, loses covenant-betrayal force), änderten ihre Religion (neutral religious-preference framing)
Original: עָזַב
Category: Apostasy
Covenant-breach vocabulary describing Israel’s relational abandonment of YHWH (Richter 2,12.13), not merely a change of religious practice. Must not be softened to a neutral ‘changed religion’; this is covenant-betrayal language directly feeding the Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness doctrine.
Went After Other Gods
Approved rendering: liefen anderen Göttern nach
Transliteration: liefen anderen Göttern nach
Doctrine: Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: wechselten zu anderen Göttern (loses the relational-following/allegiance force)
Original: וַיֵּלְכוּ אַחֲרֵי אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים
Category: Apostasy
Idiom for religious allegiance/following (Richter 2,12), normally used of walking after YHWH, here transferred to other gods. ‘Walking after’ is covenant-relationship vocabulary; its transfer to other gods is a direct covenant-fidelity violation, not neutral cultural exchange.
Did Not Know The Lord
Approved rendering: kannten…nicht
Transliteration: kannten…nicht
Doctrine: Covenant Memory and Generational Transmission
Rejected alternatives: wussten…nicht (flattens a covenant-relational breach into a mere information deficit)
Original: לֹא יָדְעוּ (יָדַע)
Category: Apostasy
The generation after Joshua’s death lacked relational, experiential, loyalty-bearing acquaintance with YHWH (Richter 2,10) — a covenant breach, not mere historical ignorance. German ‘kennen’ (relational/experiential) versus ‘wissen’ (propositional) is the exact fault line and, unusually, a German-specific translation asset rather than only a risk: German already lexically distinguishes what English ‘know’ leaves ambiguous.
Provoked To Anger
Approved rendering: erzürnten / reizten…zum Zorn
Transliteration: erzürnten / reizten…zum Zorn
Doctrine: Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: verletzten (too weak, loses the covenant-jealousy motif)
Original: וַיַּכְעִיסוּ (כָּעַס)
Category: Apostasy
Israel’s apostasy (Richter 2,12) is described as personally, relationally provocative to YHWH’s covenant jealousy (cf. Deuteronomy 32:16, 21), not an abstract rule violation. German rendering must preserve the personal, relational provocation sense.
Carved Image Cast Image
Approved rendering: geschnitztes Bild und gegossenes Bild
Transliteration: geschnitztes Bild und gegossenes Bild
Doctrine: Moral Decline and the Need for a Righteous King / Idolatry and False Worship
Rejected alternatives: Götzenbild (generic, loses the Decalogue’s two-technique specificity)
Original: פֶּסֶל וּמַסֵּכָה
Category: False Worship
Two distinct idol-manufacturing techniques (carving and metal-casting) explicitly forbidden together in the Decalogue (Exodus 20:4). Micah’s household idolatry (Richter 17,3-4; 18,14-20.30-31) exemplifies total collapse of proper covenant worship structures. Flag the direct Decalogue echo for teaching material.
Did Not Drive Out
Approved rendering: vertrieben nicht / trieben nicht aus
Transliteration: vertrieben nicht / trieben nicht aus
Doctrine: Incomplete Conquest and Partial Obedience
Rejected alternatives: besiegten nicht (loses the specific dispossession-command echo)
Original: לֹא הוֹרִישׁ
Category: Covenant
The catalog refrain (Richter 1,19.21.27.28.29.30.31.33) recording each tribe’s failure to fully dispossess the Canaanites. Must be rendered consistently across all seven occurrences to preserve the cumulative, damning list-structure that grounds chapter 2’s theological diagnosis.
Forced Labor
Approved rendering: Fronarbeit / Frondienst
Transliteration: Fronarbeit / Frondienst
Doctrine: Incomplete Conquest and Partial Obedience
Rejected alternatives: Zwangsarbeit (mandatory rejection — direct 20th-century Nazi-era historical contamination, Zwangsarbeiter)
Original: מַס
Category: Covenant
Tribute-labor/corvée imposed on a subjugated Canaanite population instead of full dispossession (Richter 1,28.30.33.35). A pragmatic half-obedience with lasting consequences (cf. Joshua 23:12-13). ‘Zwangsarbeit,’ while lexically closer, is a collision risk of the same class the baseline already documents for ‘Heil’; ‘Fronarbeit/Frondienst’ (feudal-era corvée register) is mandatory.
Moved To Pity Relented
Approved rendering: es tat dem HERRN leid / der HERR hatte Erbarmen
Transliteration: es tat dem HERRN leid / der HERR hatte Erbarmen
Doctrine: Divine Compassion amid Judgment
Rejected alternatives: änderte seine Meinung (implies an inconsistent change in God’s essential character)
Original: כִּי־יִנָּחֵם יְהוָה (נָחַם)
Category: Divine Character
A striking anthropopathic expression (Richter 2,18) of YHWH’s grieved, compassion-driven change of disposition toward His people’s suffering, triggering deliverance. Must avoid implying divine capriciousness while preserving genuine relational compassion-language. God’s grace here precedes and is not earned by Israel’s repentance.
His Soul Could Not Endure
Approved rendering: es wurde ihm unerträglich wegen ihrer Not
Transliteration: es wurde ihm unerträglich wegen ihrer Not
Doctrine: Divine Compassion amid Judgment
Rejected alternatives: er bereute (too strong, implies moral fault in God)
Original: וַתִּקְצַר נַפְשׁוֹ
Category: Divine Character
An anthropopathic idiom (Richter 10,16) describing YHWH’s compassion overriding His own prior stated judicial refusal to deliver (v.13) once repentance occurs. Requires the same careful anthropopathic framing as the 2:18 entry above.
Lest Israel Boast
Approved rendering: damit sich Israel nicht rühme
Transliteration: damit sich Israel nicht rühme
Doctrine: God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers
Rejected alternatives: damit Israel nicht zu stolz wird (weaker, loses the direct parallel to Ephesians 2:9)
Original: פֶּן־יִתְפָּאֵר יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: Divine Character
The explicit stated reason God reduces Gideon’s army from 32,000 to 300 (Richter 7,2): so that the deliverance can never be attributed to human strength. Flag the direct doctrinal parallel to the baseline’s Ephesians 2:9 ‘nicht aus Werken…damit sich niemand rühme’ material.
His Strength Left Him
Approved rendering: seine Kraft verließ ihn / der HERR war von ihm gewichen
Transliteration: seine Kraft verließ ihn / der HERR war von ihm gewichen
Doctrine: Samson’s Consecration and Self-Inflicted Downfall
Rejected alternatives: die Kraft verließ ihn wegen seines Haares (magical-talisman misreading — the hair is a covenant-sign, not the power’s source)
Original: וַיָּסַר כֹּחוֹ
Category: Vow and Consecration
The departure of Samson’s God-given strength upon violation of his Nazirite vow (Richter 16,20); the narrative clarifies that ‘the LORD had left him’ — the Spirit’s presence, not the hair itself, was the actual source of power. Must not let German phrasing suggest the hair was itself a magical talisman.
Concubine
Approved rendering: Nebenfrau
Transliteration: Nebenfrau
Doctrine: Moral and Social Collapse at Gibeah
Original: פִּילֶגֶשׁ
Category: Ethics and Social Order
A secondary wife of lesser legal/social status; the central figure of the Gibeah atrocity (Richter 19,1-30), narrated in language deliberately echoing Genesis 19’s Sodom narrative. Lexical rendering is straightforward, but the chapter’s content (sexual violence, murder, dismemberment) requires mandatory theologian-authored, non-endorsing pastoral framing comparable to this pipeline’s Matthew 27:25 and household-code cautions.
Saved Delivered
Approved rendering: retten / erretten
Transliteration: retten / erretten
Doctrine: God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers / Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Heil (without explicit reviewer sign-off, per the baseline’s existing rule), befreien / Befreiung (imports unrelated 20th-century political-liberation resonance, e.g. Befreiungstheologie, 1945 ‘Befreiung’)
Original: יָשַׁע (וַיֹּשִׁיעֻם)
Category: Salvation
Historically concrete, this-worldly military rescue from oppression wrought by God through the judges (Richter 2,16.18; 3,9.15.31; 6,14-15.36-37; 7,2.7; 8,22; 10,1.13-14; 12,2-3; 13,5); the direct Hebrew lexical root behind Joshua, Isaiah, and the Hebrew background of ‘Jesus’ (Yeshua) and the whole NT sōtēria/sōzō word-group. Reuse the baseline’s Rettung/retten word-family exactly. Flag every occurrence for the doctrinal note that these OT deliverances are historically concrete but typologically pattern the fuller NT salvation, without collapsing the two into identical referents.
Medium Risk Terms
Sin
Approved rendering: Sünde
Transliteration: Sünde
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability / Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Original: חָטָא / חַטָּאת
Category: Sin
Moral transgression before a personal God; colloquial German risks trivializing ‘Sünde’ toward minor indulgence. In Judges, the corporate confession formula ‘wir haben gesündigt’ (10:10, 15) is a notable escalation in the cycle’s articulation of repentance compared to the bare ‘schrien zum HERRN’ of earlier cycles. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for the Judges curriculum.
Israel
Approved rendering: Israel
Transliteration: Israel
Doctrine: Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Original: יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: God
The covenant people descended from Jacob, the collective subject of the book’s cycle of apostasy and deliverance. The baseline’s caution re: contemporary political conflation (Staatsräson) is less acute in this pre-monarchic historical-narrative context but should still be briefly noted for teaching material. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for the Judges curriculum.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Reich Gottes
Transliteration: Reich Gottes
Doctrine: Kingship and Theocracy (forward bridge)
God’s sovereign reign, advancing through the gospel. Judges’ new term ‘König’ (human kingship, refused by Gideon and grasped illegitimately by Abimelech) sets up, by contrast and anticipation, the later fuller revelation of God’s kingdom under a righteous king, ultimately Christ. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for the Judges curriculum as a forward-pointing doctrinal bridge, not as vocabulary occurring in the book’s own text.
Sold Into The Hand Of
Approved rendering: verkaufte sie in die Hand
Transliteration: verkaufte sie in die Hand
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance
Rejected alternatives: gab sie in die Hand (softer, loses the concrete commercial-transaction force)
Original: מָכַר בְּיַד
Category: Sin and Judgment
A commercial-transaction metaphor for YHWH’s judicial abandonment of Israel to an oppressing enemy (Richter 2,14; 3,8; 4,2). Retain the concrete commercial verb; note the striking canonical contrast with NT redemption-purchase metaphors (Colossians 2:14’s Schuldschein; Matthew 20:28’s Lösegeld), which run in the opposite transactional direction.
Fable Parable
Approved rendering: Gleichnis / Fabel
Transliteration: Gleichnis / Fabel
Doctrine: Kingship and Theocracy
Original: מָשָׁל
Category: Kingship
Jotham’s fable of the trees seeking a king (Richter 9,8-15), a figurative teaching-narrative satirizing Israel’s/Shechem’s choice of illegitimate kingship. Homographic with, but grammatically distinct from, the verb mashal (‘to rule’) of ch. 8; the Hebrew pun is untranslatable into German since ‘Gleichnis/Fabel’ shares no root with ‘herrschen’ — note for teaching material, not a doctrinal risk in itself.
More Corrupt
Approved rendering: verdarben sich mehr
Transliteration: verdarben sich mehr
Doctrine: Moral Decline and the Need for a Righteous King
Rejected alternatives: wurden schlechter (loses the deliberate Genesis 6 echo)
Original: הִשְׁחִיתוּ (שָׁחַת)
Category: Apostasy
Israel’s post-Joshua moral trajectory (Richter 2,19) described with the same root used of humanity’s pre-Flood corruption (Genesis 6:11-12). Flag this canonical echo for teaching material.
Stubborn Ways
Approved rendering: ihr verstocktes Wesen / ihre verhärteten Wege
Transliteration: ihr verstocktes Wesen / ihre verhärteten Wege
Doctrine: Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: schwierige Wege (loses the intentional-resistance force)
Original: דַּרְכָּם הַקָּשָׁה
Category: Apostasy
Israel’s obstinate, hardened resistance to covenant faithfulness (Richter 2,19), not passive drift. German ‘verstockt’ (hardened) preserves the intentional-resistance force better than a neutral alternative.
Baals
Approved rendering: Baal / die Baale
Transliteration: Baal / die Baale
Doctrine: Idolatry and False Worship
Rejected alternatives: Götzen (generic false-god abstraction, erases the concrete historical referent)
Original: הַבְּעָלִים (בַּעַל)
Category: False Worship
Concrete, historically specific Canaanite storm-and-fertility deities (Richter 2,11.13; 3,7; 6,25-32; 8,33; 10,6); the plural denotes local Baal-shrines/manifestations. Keep as a transliterated proper name, consistent with established German Bible convention.
Ashtaroth
Approved rendering: die Astarten / Aschtarot
Transliteration: die Astarten / Aschtarot
Doctrine: Idolatry and False Worship
Rejected alternatives: Göttinnen (generic)
Original: עַשְׁתָּרוֹת
Category: False Worship
Plural of Ashtoreth/Astarte, the Canaanite fertility/war goddess paired formulaically with the Baals (Richter 2,13; 10,6). Transliterate as proper noun; do not translate as a generic ‘goddess.‘
Asherah
Approved rendering: die Aschera
Transliteration: die Aschera
Doctrine: Idolatry and False Worship
Rejected alternatives: heiliger Baum (loses the cultic-legal technical background)
Original: הָאֲשֵׁרָה
Category: False Worship
A sacred wooden pole/tree symbol of the goddess Asherah (or the goddess herself), explicitly commanded to be destroyed (Deuteronomy 7:5). Gideon’s destruction of his father’s Asherah/Baal altar (Richter 6,25-27) is the narrative’s first positive act of covenant reformation.
Ephod
Approved rendering: Efod
Transliteration: Efod
Doctrine: Idolatry and False Worship / God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers
Rejected alternatives: Priestergewand (bare garment sense, loses the idolatrous repurposing irony)
Original: אֵפוֹד
Category: False Worship
A priestly garment (Exodus 28); here, an unauthorized idolatrous cultic object Gideon fashions from war-spoils, which ‘all Israel whored after’ (Richter 8,27). Flag the doctrinal irony for teaching material — the man who refused a crown nonetheless creates an idol.
Fathers Ancestral
Approved rendering: Väter / Vorfahren
Transliteration: Väter / Vorfahren
Doctrine: Covenant Memory and Generational Transmission
Rejected alternatives: Väter used bare without context (risks confusion with the baseline’s doctrinal ‘Vater’ = God the Father)
Original: אֲבוֹתָם / אָבוֹת
Category: Covenant
Human ancestors/forefathers of the generation in view (Richter 2,10.12.17.19), in contrast to the patriarchal covenant fathers. Must be disambiguated from the baseline’s doctrinally loaded ‘Vater’ entry (God as Father, adoption doctrine); here it denotes human ancestors, never deity.
Generation
Approved rendering: Geschlecht / Generation
Transliteration: Geschlecht / Generation
Doctrine: Covenant Memory and Generational Transmission
Original: דּוֹר
Category: Covenant
A generation/age-cohort (Richter 2,10); structurally central since the cycle of Judges is fundamentally a generational transmission problem. Covenant memory is not self-transmitting and must be actively taught (cf. Deuteronomy 6:6-9).
Inheritance
Approved rendering: Erbe / Erbteil
Transliteration: Erbe / Erbteil
Doctrine: The Covenant Land Gift and Inheritance
Original: נַחֲלָה
Category: Covenant
The land as Israel’s covenant gift from God, allotted tribal possession, not a self-won prize (Richter 2,6.9; ch. 1 throughout). Resonant with, but must be kept conceptually distinct from, the baseline’s NT ‘adoption’ doctrine’s inheritance-rights language (Kindschaft); Judges’ inheritance is this-worldly territorial allotment, not eschatological inheritance in Christ.
Take Possession Dispossess
Approved rendering: in Besitz nehmen / vertreiben
Transliteration: in Besitz nehmen / vertreiben
Doctrine: Incomplete Conquest and Partial Obedience
Original: יָרַשׁ (הוֹרִישׁ)
Category: Covenant
To inherit/take possession (Israel of the land, Richter 2,6) versus, in the causative form, to dispossess/drive out a prior occupant (the Canaanites, ch. 1). Deliberate wordplay across chapters 1-2; translators must track which sense is active per occurrence.
Hand Of The Lord Against Them
Approved rendering: die Hand des HERRN war gegen sie zum Unheil
Transliteration: die Hand des HERRN war gegen sie zum Unheil
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance
Rejected alternatives: Gottes Einfluss (abstracts away from the concrete ‘hand’ idiom)
Original: יַד־יְהוָה הָיְתָה בָּם לְרָעָה
Category: Divine Character
The ‘hand of the LORD’ idiom for direct divine agency, here denoting judgment (Richter 2,15); the same idiom elsewhere denotes blessing/empowerment. Preserve the concrete ‘hand’ idiom rather than abstracting to ‘God’s influence.‘
Sworn
Approved rendering: geschworen hatte
Transliteration: geschworen hatte
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance
Original: נִשְׁבַּע
Category: Divine Character
Covenant oath language (Richter 2,15) tying Israel’s suffering directly to the Deuteronomic covenant sanctions (Deuteronomy 28), not arbitrary punishment.
Nazirite
Approved rendering: Nasiräer
Transliteration: Nasiräer
Doctrine: Samson’s Consecration and Self-Inflicted Downfall
Original: נָזִיר
Category: Vow and Consecration
A person under a special vow of consecration (Numbers 6) involving abstention from wine/grapes, avoidance of corpse-contact, and uncut hair as the vow’s outward sign; Samson is consecrated as a unique, lifelong, involuntary Nazirite from birth (Richter 13,5.7; 16,17). Requires a brief explanatory gloss on first occurrence.
Remember Me
Approved rendering: gedenke meiner / erinnere dich an mich
Transliteration: gedenke meiner / erinnere dich an mich
Doctrine: Samson’s Consecration and Self-Inflicted Downfall / God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers
Original: זְכְרֵנִי
Category: Vow and Consecration
Samson’s final prayer (Richter 16,28), a plea for God’s favorable, covenantal remembrance and action. A genuine, if late and costly, turn back to reliance on God, granted one final act of Spirit-empowered strength.
Assembly Congregation
Approved rendering: die Versammlung / die Gemeinde (Israels)
Transliteration: die Versammlung / die Gemeinde (Israels)
Doctrine: Tribal Disunity and Civil Conflict
Rejected alternatives: Gemeinde used bare, unqualified (risks bleed-through into the baseline’s NT ekklesia/church-as-God’s-people doctrine)
Original: קָהָל / עֵדָה
Category: Ethics and Social Order
Israel’s collective covenant body gathered for decision-making (Richter 20,1); here convened not for worship but to prosecute a near-fratricidal civil war against Benjamin. LXX renders qahal as ekklesia, the lexical ancestor of the baseline’s ‘Gemeinde,’ but this OT assembly must be kept conceptually distinct from the NT church doctrine; prefer ‘Versammlung’ with the ‘(Israels)’ qualifier as the primary rendering.
Those Who Offered Themselves Willingly
Approved rendering: die sich freiwillig anbieten / die willig sind
Transliteration: die sich freiwillig anbieten / die willig sind
Doctrine: Voluntary Response within Sovereign Deliverance
Original: הַמִּתְנַדְּבִים (נָדַב)
Category: Ethics and Social Order
Tribal volunteers praised in the Song of Deborah (Richter 5,2.9) for freely joining the deliverance-effort, in contrast to tribes who failed to muster. Introduces a voluntary-response theme alongside the Spirit’s sovereign empowering.
Cursed Meroz
Approved rendering: verflucht (Meros sei verflucht)
Transliteration: verflucht (Meros sei verflucht)
Doctrine: Voluntary Response within Sovereign Deliverance
Original: אוֹרוּ (אָרַר)
Category: Ethics and Social Order
A formal curse pronounced on the Israelite town of Meroz for failing to join the deliverance-effort against Sisera (Richter 5,23). Note the lexical distinction from the baseline’s ‘verflucht’ entry (Galatians 1:8-9’s anathema, NT gospel-fidelity language) — same German word, different but related OT military-covenant-participation register; flag for review whenever it recurs to prevent conflation.
Groaning
Approved rendering: ihr Seufzen / ihr Ächzen
Transliteration: ihr Seufzen / ihr Ächzen
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance
Original: נַאֲקָתָם
Category: Ethics and Social Order
The sound of the oppressed under affliction (Richter 2,18), deliberately echoing the Exodus-generation’s groaning under Egyptian bondage (Exodus 2:24, 6:5); recasts each deliverance as a small re-enactment of the exodus pattern.
Servant Of The Lord
Approved rendering: Knecht des HERRN
Transliteration: Knecht des HERRN
Doctrine: The Office of Judge (background)
Rejected alternatives: Sklave des HERRN (menial connotation, loses the honorific covenant-office sense), Diener (too generic/secular)
Original: עֶבֶד יְהוָה
Category: God
An honorific covenant title of highest honor (used of Moses, Joshua, David), denoting authorized covenant leadership, not menial servitude. Joshua’s death (Richter 2,8) and the loss of this office creates the leadership vacuum the whole book explores.
The Lord Was With
Approved rendering: der HERR war mit…
Transliteration: der HERR war mit…
Doctrine: God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers
Original: יְהוָה הָיָה עִם
Category: God
Divine accompanying presence enabling a specific person’s task/office (Richter 1,19; 2,18), the grammatical basis for attributing success to God rather than human skill. Flag the doctrinal echo of ‘Immanuel…Gott mit uns’ (Matthew 1:23, already fixed in the baseline) for teaching material.
Yhwh Shalom Altar Name
Approved rendering: Der HERR ist Friede
Transliteration: Der HERR ist Friede
Doctrine: God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers
Original: יְהוָה שָׁלוֹם
Category: God
A commemorative altar-name confessing God’s peace-granting character following Gideon’s theophany-encounter (Richter 6,24). Ties directly to the baseline’s established Friede doctrine; gives concrete narrative expression to divine peace as a response to fear before a theophany.
Test Prove
Approved rendering: prüfen
Transliteration: prüfen
Doctrine: Providence and Purposive Testing
Rejected alternatives: verführen (implies enticement toward sin — forbidden)
Original: נַסּוֹת (נָסָה)
Category: God
Purposive divine testing intended to reveal or strengthen covenant loyalty, distinct from entrapment (Richter 2,22; 3,1.4). Connects to the baseline’s Providence (Vorsehung) doctrine with the same caution against a deist, impersonal reading.
Bowed Down
Approved rendering: beteten sie an / warfen sich vor ihnen nieder
Transliteration: beteten sie an / warfen sich vor ihnen nieder
Doctrine: Apostasy and Covenant Unfaithfulness
Original: וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲוּוּ (הִשְׁתַּחֲוָה)
Category: God
The physical act of prostration in worship or homage, used both for legitimate worship of YHWH and, in Richter 2,12, for idolatrous homage to other gods. Concrete cultic act distinguishing internal apostasy from its outward cultic expression; context must clarify the object of worship.
Low Risk Terms
Prophet
Approved rendering: Prophet
Transliteration: Prophet
Doctrine: The Office of Judge (background)
Original: נָבִיא
Category: God
God’s spokesperson, moved to declare God’s message. Judges introduces the feminine form ‘Prophetin’ (Deborah, Richter 4,4) as a new, low-risk extension of this baseline term. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for the Judges curriculum.
Peace
Approved rendering: Friede
Transliteration: Friede
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance (background)
Relational peace with God through justification, in its NT sense. Judges’ own formulaic notice ‘das Land hatte Ruhe’ (land_had_rest, below) and Gideon’s altar-name ‘Der HERR ist Friede’ (yhwh_shalom_altar_name, below) are this-worldly, provisional military/relational peace, resonant with but distinct from this NT doctrine. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for the Judges curriculum as background reference.
David
Approved rendering: David
Transliteration: David
Doctrine: Kingship and Theocracy (forward bridge)
King David, through whose royal line the Messiah was promised. Judges never names David directly, but its entire kingship trajectory (Gideon’s refusal, Abimelech’s failure, the ‘no king’ bookend) argumentatively anticipates the Davidic and ultimately messianic answer to the book’s own diagnosed need. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for the Judges curriculum as forward-pointing doctrinal bridge vocabulary.
Land Had Rest
Approved rendering: das Land hatte Ruhe
Transliteration: das Land hatte Ruhe
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance
Original: וַתִּשְׁקֹט הָאָרֶץ
Category: Sin and Judgment
The formulaic notice marking the completion and provisional peace of each judge’s era (Richter 3,11.30; 5,31; 8,28). This-worldly, provisional military peace; resonant with but distinct from the baseline’s Friede (peace with God) doctrine.
Shibboleth
Approved rendering: Schibbolet
Transliteration: Schibbolet
Doctrine: Tribal Disunity and Civil Conflict
Original: שִׁבֹּלֶת
Category: Ethics and Social Order
A dialectal test-word (‘ear of grain’) exploiting pronunciation differences between Gileadites and Ephraimites (Richter 12,5-6). Now an independent German/international loanword; primarily a cultural-linguistic footnote.
Terrible Distress
Approved rendering: sie waren in großer Bedrängnis
Transliteration: sie waren in großer Bedrängnis
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance
Original: וַיֵּצֶר לָהֶם מְאֹד

Sign
Approved rendering: Zeichen
Transliteration: Zeichen
Doctrine: God’s Grace through Flawed Deliverers
Rejected alternatives: Wunder (overstates as ‘miracle’ beyond the confirmatory-token sense)
Original: אוֹת
Category: God
A confirmatory miraculous sign requested to verify a divine word or commission. Gideon’s fleece-test (Richter 6,36-40) shows human weakness/doubt met with divine patience.
The Great Work
Approved rendering: das große Werk
Transliteration: das große Werk
Doctrine: Covenant Memory and Generational Transmission
Original: הַמַּעֲשֶׂה הַגָּדוֹל
Category: God
God’s historical redemptive acts (exodus, conquest, Richter 2,7) witnessed by the elders who outlived Joshua. Eyewitness memory of God’s saving acts sustained covenant faithfulness; its loss is presented as the direct cause of the following generation’s apostasy.
Prophetess
Approved rendering: Prophetin
Transliteration: Prophetin
Doctrine: The Office of Judge
Original: נְבִיאָה
Category: God
Feminine form of prophet; Deborah’s title (Richter 4,4), the only judge given both prophetic and judicial titles. Useful for clarifying to German readers the clearest judicial (courtroom-adjacent) sense of shophet in the whole book.
Enemies
Approved rendering: Feinde
Transliteration: Feinde
Doctrine: The Cycle of Sin, Judgment, and Deliverance
Original: אֹיְבֵיהֶם
Category: God
Hostile foreign nations/oppressors God allows to afflict Israel as covenant judgment (Richter 2,14). Standard term, low ambiguity.
Jerubbaal
Approved rendering: Jerubbaal
Transliteration: Jerubbaal
Doctrine: Idolatry and False Worship (background)
Original: יְרֻבַּעַל
Category: God
A polemical taunt-name (‘let Baal contend’) given to Gideon after he destroys Baal’s altar (Richter 6,32), mocking Baal’s impotence. Proper name, transliterated; used again in chs. 8-9 (of Abimelech’s father).
