Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Song of Solomon (Das Hohelied)
Destination Language: German | Full-Book Term Registry
Curriculum: Song of Solomon
Core passage: Song of Solomon 8:6–7
Baseline authority: This glossary extends translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, and doctrine_risk_registry.json from the Romans Language Package. Terms already established in the baseline are marked [BASELINE REUSE] and must be rendered exactly as recorded there; they are not redefined here.
Risk tier definitions (reused exactly from the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json):
- Critical — Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine. Mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence.
- High — Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or denominational-conflation risk. Human theologian review required.
- Medium — Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision. Automated review sufficient.
Baseline Terms Reused Exactly (no new entry required)
| Term key | Baseline German rendering | Reused for | Baseline risk |

| peace | Friede | 8:10 shalom/Solomon-name wordplay | Low |
| covenant | Bund | Doctrinal-framing references to marriage as covenant (Exclusive and Covenantal Love doctrine); not a direct lexical occurrence in the book itself but the interpretive category applied to it | High (per baseline) |
New Terms Introduced by This Curriculum
| Term key | Hebrew original (translit.) | LXX Greek (translit.) | German rendering | Risk | Doctrine | Primary passage(s) | Translation notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| song_of_songs_title | שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים (Shir HaShirim) | ᾎσμα ᾈσμάτων (Asma Asmatōn) | Hoheslied / Das Hohelied | Low | Book identity | 1:1 | Stable across Lutherbibel and Einheitsübersetzung. “Das Hohelied Salomos” also traditional and acceptable. |
| beloved_dod | דּוֹד / דּוֹדִי (dod, dodi) | ἀδελφιδός (adelphidos, LXX’s kinship-flattening choice) | Geliebter / Geliebte | High | Goodness of Marital Love; Exclusive and Covenantal Love | Throughout (1:2 and passim) | Standardize on “Geliebter/Geliebte,” not the older, archaic-sounding Luther “Freund/Freundin.” Consistency required across all occurrences per baseline cross-document rule. |
| love_caresses_dodim | דֹּדַיִךְ / דּוֹדִים (dodayikh, dodim) | μαστοί (LXX, “breasts” — see notes) | deine Liebe — NEVER “deine Brüste” | Critical | Goodness of Marital Love | 1:2, 1:4, 4:10, 7:13 | Ancient consonantal ambiguity (dodayikh “your love” vs. dadayikh “your breasts”) produced a documented LXX/Vulgate/Luther 1545 “breasts” tradition, corrected in modern critical translations. Mandatory theologian review with textual-history footnote whenever quoted. |
| love_abstract_ahavah | אַהֲבָה (ahavah) | ἀγάπη (agapē) | Liebe | Medium | All five core doctrines | 2:4, 2:5, 2:7, 8:6, 8:7 | LXX’s use of agapē here is an early, historically significant attestation of the word for ardent romantic/erotic love — useful corrective against the popular assumption that agapē is intrinsically non-physical. |
| kiss | נְשִׁיקָה (nesiqah) | φίλημα (philēma) | Kuss | Low | Goodness of Marital Love | 1:2 | Stable. |
| vineyard_self | כֶּרֶם (kerem) | ἀμπελών (ampelōn) | Weinberg | Medium | Exclusive and Covenantal Love | 1:6, 2:15, 8:11–12 | Metaphorical self/body sense requires explicit gloss for German readers unfamiliar with the ANE body-as-land convention. |
| dark_and_lovely | שָׁחוֹר…נָאוָה (shachor…naveh) | μέλαινα…καλή (melaina…kalē) | dunkel und lieblich (avoid “aber”) | Medium | Beauty and Desire within God’s Design | 1:5 | Avoid the KJV-derived adversative “aber” (but), not required by the Hebrew waw; sensitive also to Germany’s contemporary race/beauty discourse. |
| adjuration_refrain | הִשְׁבַּעְתִּי אֶתְכֶם (hishba’ti etkhem) | ὥρκισα ὑμᾶς (hōrkisa hymas) | Ich beschwöre euch… | High | Faithfulness and Longing; Beauty and Desire within God’s Design | 2:7, 3:5, 8:4 | Structural refrain; must render identically at all three occurrences per baseline consistency discipline. |
| lovesick | חוֹלַת אַהֲבָה (cholat ahavah) | τετραυματισμένη ἀγάπης (approx.) | liebeskrank | Medium | Faithfulness and Longing | 2:5, 5:8 | Poetic idiom of honored longing, not pathology; avoid modern “Liebeskummer” pop-register. |
| banner_of_love | דֶּגֶל (degel) | — | Feldzeichen / Banner | Medium | Exclusive and Covenantal Love | 2:4 | Military connotation may read as martial to modern German ears; clarify ANE public-identification convention. |
| whom_my_soul_loves | שֶׁאָהֲבָה נַפְשִׁי (she’ahavah nafshi) | ὃν ἠγάπησεν ἡ ψυχή μου | den meine Seele liebt | Medium | Faithfulness and Longing | 3:1–4 | Clarify nefesh = “whole self,” not a body/soul dualism; refrain occurs four times in ch. 3. |
| palanquin | אֲפִרְיוֹן (appiryon) | φορεῖον (phoreion) | Prunkwagen / Tragsessel | Low | (lexical curiosity, no independent doctrine) | 3:9 | Rare loanword; scholarly note only. |
| bride | כַּלָּה (kallah) | νύμφη (nymphē) | Braut | High | Traditional Allegorical Reading; Exclusive and Covenantal Love | 4:8–5:1 | Cross-reference baseline’s Ephesians 5:22–33 “Braut Christi” material (Critical there); handle typological connection deliberately, not by assumption. |
| my_sister_endearment | אֲחֹתִי (achoti) | ἀδελφή μου (adelphē mou) | meine Schwester | High | Exclusive and Covenantal Love | 4:9, 4:10, 4:12, 5:1, 5:2 | ANE spousal-endearment convention, not literal sibling relation; mandatory explanatory gloss to prevent incest-misreading by modern German audience. |
| locked_garden | גַּן נָעוּל (gan na’ul) | κῆπος κεκλεισμένος (kēpos kekleismenos) | verschlossener Garten | High | Exclusive and Covenantal Love | 4:12 | Positive exclusivity image; must not be reframed as shame-based concealment. |
| sealed_fountain | מַעְיָן חָתוּם (ma’yan chatum) | πηγὴ ἐσφραγισμένη (pēgē esphragismenē) | versiegelte Quelle | High | Traditional Allegorical Reading; Exclusive and Covenantal Love | 4:12 | Same σφραγίζω root as baseline’s Ephesians “versiegelt” (sealed_with_the_spirit); deliberate three-way echo with Song 8:6 and Ephesians 1:13 — preserve consistently. |
| living_water_garden | מַעְיַן גַּנִּים בְּאֵר מַיִם חַיִּים | φρέαρ ὕδατος ζῶντος (phrear hydatos zōntos) | Quelle lebendigen Wassers | Medium | Beauty and Desire within God’s Design | 4:15 | Natural (not text-critically established) canonical resonance with John 4’s “lebendiges Wasser”; flag as thematic echo only. |
| Critical | Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy | 5:1 | Central doctrinal anchor: divine/narratorial blessing pronounced over consummated marital intimacy; do not soften “berauscht euch.” |
| sought_not_found | בִּקַּשְׁתִּיו…לֹא מְצָאתִיו | ἐζήτησα…οὐχ εὗρον | ich suchte ihn…fand ihn nicht | High | Faithfulness and Longing | 3:1–2, 5:6 | Core motif of persistent, aching search; keep both halves (seeking and not-finding) present, not resolved prematurely. |
| altogether_desirable | מַחֲמַדִּים (machamadim) | ἐπιθυμία / ἐπιθυμητός (approx.) | ganz und gar begehrenswert | High | Beauty and Desire within God’s Design | 5:16 | Same root as Decalogue’s “do not covet” (Exodus 20:17); celebrated positively within covenantal bounds — draw out explicitly in teaching material. |
Three variant forms; render with visibly consistent core vocabulary across all three to preserve the refrain’s perceptible development. |
| my_perfect_dove | יוֹנָתִי תַמָּתִי (yonati tammati) | περιστερά μου, τελεία μου | meine Taube, meine Vollkommene | Medium | Beauty and Desire within God’s Design | 6:9 | Borrows sacrificial “without blemish” vocabulary (tamim); surface the cultic-language borrowing in teaching material. |
| awesome_as_army | אֲיֻמָּה כַּנִּדְגָּלוֹת | φοβερὰ ὡς τεταγμέναι (approx.) | erhaben wie Heerscharen mit Feldzeichen | Medium | Beauty and Desire within God’s Design | 6:4, 6:10 | ”Heerscharen” echoes “HERR der Heerscharen” (LORD of Hosts) — potential positive theological resonance, but flag militaristic-imagery discomfort risk. |
| shulammite | הַשּׁוּלַמִּית (hashulammit) | ἡ Σουλαμῖτις | Sulamith | High | (identity epithet; no independent doctrine, but affects reception of all doctrines in ch. 6–8) | 6:13(7:1)–8:14 | Distinct German-cultural risk: Paul Celan’s “Todesfuge” association; native-speaker/theologian awareness required, not a reason to avoid the name. |
| desire_teshuqah | תְּשׁוּקָה (teshuqah) | ἐπιστροφή (approx., disputed) | Verlangen | Critical | Beauty and Desire within God’s Design | 7:11(10); cross-ref. Genesis 3:16, 4:7 | Rare word (3x in OT); reversal of Fall’s disordered-desire language into celebrated marital mutuality. Interpretive linchpin verse — mandatory theologian review and explicit Genesis cross-referencing. |
| navel_goblet_wasf | שֹׁרְרֵךְ אַגַּן הַסַּהַר | ὀμφαλός σου κρατήρ (approx.) | dein Nabel wie ein rundes Becken | Medium | Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy | 7:3 | Genre convention (wasf) needs framing note so extended body-praise poetry is received as reverent, not embarrassing. |
| mandrakes | דּוּדָאִים (dudaim) | μανδραγόρας (mandragoras) | Alraunen | Low | (minor fertility/fragrance motif) | 7:14 | Established German botanical term; cf. Genesis 30. |
| seal_on_heart | חוֹתָם (chotam) | σφραγίς (sphragis) | Siegel | High | Traditional Allegorical Reading; Exclusive and Covenantal Love | 8:6 | Same root as Ephesians 1:13 “versiegelt” (baseline, sealed_with_the_spirit); deliberate cross-book resonance — surface explicitly in teaching material. |
| love_strong_as_death | אַהֲבָה עַזָּה כַמָּוֶת | κραταιὰ ὡς θάνατος ἀγάπη | Liebe [ist] stark wie der Tod | High | Faithfulness and Longing; core passage thesis | 8:6 | Core passage centerpiece; must retain full comparative force (“as death,” not softened). |
| jealousy_fierce | קִנְאָה קָשָׁה כִשְׁאוֹל | ζῆλος σκληρὸς ὡς ᾅδης | Eifer [ist] fest wie das Totenreich | Critical | Faithfulness and Longing; core passage thesis | 8:6 | Eifer, never Eifersucht (the “-sucht” suffix wrongly pathologizes this positive, God-echoing covenant jealousy). Established Lutherbibel choice confirmed. |
| sheol_grave | שְׁאוֹל (she’ol) | ᾅδης (Hadēs) | Totenreich (not “Hölle” without qualification) | Critical | Faithfulness and Longing; core passage thesis | 8:6 | Luther’s traditional “Hölle” for Sheol risks anachronistic collision with NT/dogmatic eternal-punishment doctrine; must be distinguished from Gehenna. |
| flame_of_yah | שַׁלְהֶבֶתְיָה (shalhevetyah) | φλόγες αὐτῆς (LXX, divine-name element not transparently preserved) | eine [gewaltige] Feuerflamme, optionally glossed “möglicherweise: eine Flamme des HERRN” | Critical | Traditional Allegorical Reading; Beauty and Desire within God’s Design | 8:6 | Genuinely disputed whether -yah is the divine name or an old superlative suffix; disclose as live scholarly question, do not silently adjudicate. |
| many_waters_cannot_quench | מַיִם רַבִּים לֹא יוּכְלוּ לְכַבּוֹת | ὕδωρ πολὺ οὐ δυνήσεται σβέσαι | Große Wasser können die Liebe nicht auslöschen | Low | Faithfulness and Longing; core passage thesis | 8:7 | Retain “auslöschen” (fire-extinguishing verb) to preserve continuity with the preceding flame image. |
| love_cannot_be_bought | אִם־יִתֵּן אִישׁ…בּוֹז יָבוּזוּ לוֹ | ἐὰν δῷ ἀνήρ…ἐξουδενώσουσιν αὐτόν | wenn einer alle Habe seines Hauses um die Liebe geben wollte, man würde ihn doch nur verachten | Medium | Exclusive and Covenantal Love; core passage thesis | 8:7 | Ensure “verachten” carries full weight of the doubled Hebrew root (total scorn, not mild disapproval). |
| little_sister | אָחוֹת קְטַנָּה | ἀδελφὴ μικρά | kleine Schwester | Low | (protective-guarding motif) | 8:8 | Distinguish from ch. 4’s endearment “meine Schwester” in teaching material. |
| solomons_vineyard_contrast | כֶּרֶם שְׁלֹמֹה | ἀμπελὼν…τῷ Σαλωμών | Salomos Weinberg | Medium | Exclusive and Covenantal Love | 8:11–12 | Ironic contrast with Solomon’s many royal marriages (1 Kings 11); surface explicitly, do not flatten. |
| who_is_this_from_wilderness | מִי זֹאת עֹלָה מִן־הַמִּדְבָּר | τίς αὕτη ἡ ἀναβαίνουσα | Wer ist die, die da heraufkommt von der Wüste | Low | (structural inclusio, 3:6 / 8:5) | 3:6, 8:5 | Literary-structural marker; note the echo for teaching material on the book’s architecture. |
Cross-Reference Notes for Phase 2 Consistency
- Seal vocabulary (Siegel/versiegelt) occurs meaningfully at three points relevant to this pipeline: Ephesians 1:13 (baseline, Spirit’s sealing of the believer), Song 4:12 (sealed fountain), and Song 8:6 (seal on the heart/arm). All three should use consistent German seal-root vocabulary to preserve a deliberate, textually-grounded typological bridge.
- Eifer vs. Eifersucht: this distinction, established here for Song 8:6, should also inform any future curriculum touching Exodus 20:5, 34:14, or other divine-jealousy texts, to maintain consistency in how German conveys positive covenant-jealousy versus the negative modern sense of “Eifersucht.”
- Sheol/Hadēs vs. Hölle/Gehenna: the distinction established here (Totenreich vs. Hölle) should be applied consistently wherever future curricula in this pipeline encounter Sheol or Hadēs in Old Testament or Gospel material, to avoid piecemeal, inconsistent handling across documents.
- Bride/Braut: must be cross-checked against the existing baseline Ephesians 5:22–33 household-code material (Critical risk there) whenever curriculum material draws the Christ-and-Church allegorical connection from Song of Solomon.
- All new terms above should be added to an extended
translation_memory.jsonfor this curriculum, incrementing the version number per the baseline’s translation memory update protocol, with Critical/High entries flagged for theologian review before Phase 2 segment translation begins.
This glossary extends, and does not contradict, the baseline Romans Language Package for German. Citation format: Hoheslied [chapter],[verse] (comma, not colon), per established German Bible convention.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Gott
Transliteration: theos / Elohim / YHWH
Doctrine: The Traditional Allegorical Reading (Christ and the Church) / Faithfulness and Longing
Inherited from Romans package; enforced identically for the Song of Solomon curriculum. Relevant to the -yah divine-name question at 8:6c (flame_of_yah) and to teaching material identifying the plausibly divine voice of 5:1’s blessing (eat_friends_drink_lovers).
Jesus
Approved rendering: Jesus
Transliteration: Iēsous / Yeshua
Doctrine: The Traditional Allegorical Reading (Christ and the Church)
Inherited from Romans package; enforced identically for the Song of Solomon curriculum. Relevant only in teaching material drawing the Christ-and-Church or Pietist Brautmystik allegorical application to the book’s bridegroom figure; must never be presented as though the text itself names Christ directly.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Heiliger Geist
Transliteration: pneuma hagion
Doctrine: Allegorical Seal Typology (Song and Ephesians)
Inherited from Romans package; enforced identically for the Song of Solomon curriculum. Relevant to teaching material connecting the seal imagery of Song 4:12 and 8:6 to the Spirit’s sealing of the believer (Ephesians 1:13).
Lord
Approved rendering: Herr
Transliteration: kyrios
Doctrine: The Traditional Allegorical Reading (Christ and the Church)
Rejected alternatives: Meister, Chef
Inherited from Romans package; enforced identically for the Song of Solomon curriculum. Relevant only where teaching material draws the bridegroom-as-Lord/Bräutigam allegorical application; the book’s own beloved/dod vocabulary must never be silently replaced by ‘Herr’ in the translated text itself.
Love Caresses Dodim
Approved rendering: deine Liebe
Transliteration: dodayikh, dodim
Doctrine: The Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy
Rejected alternatives: deine Brüste (LXX mastoi / Vulgate ubera tua / Luther 1545 tradition — documented consonantal-ambiguity textual error)
Original: דֹּדַיִךְ / דּוֹדִים
Category: Marital Love and Intimacy
Occurs at 1:2, 1:4, 4:10, 7:13. The unpointed Hebrew consonants דדיך are ambiguous between ‘your love/caresses’ (Masoretic vocalization, dodayikh) and ‘your breasts’ (dadayikh, from shad). Modern critical editions and the revised Lutherbibel/Einheitsübersetzung correct to ‘deine Liebe.’ Mandatory theologian review with textual-history footnote whenever quoted, since simply ‘fixing’ Luther’s historic text without comment risks readers perceiving an unexplained alteration of Scripture.
Eat Friends Drink Lovers
Approved rendering: Esst, Freunde, trinkt, berauscht euch an der Liebe!
Transliteration: ikhlu re’im shetu veshikhru dodim
Doctrine: Divine Blessing of Consummated Love
Rejected alternatives: genießt (too weak; loses the verse’s deliberately uninhibited affirmation of erotic pleasure)
Original: אִכְלוּ רֵעִים שְׁתוּ וְשִׁכְרוּ דּוֹדִים / φάγετε πλησίοι, πίετε καὶ μεθύσθητε
Category: Marital Love and Intimacy
An invitation (5:1), plausibly spoken by God or the narrator on God’s behalf, blessing the couple’s consummated union — the single most explicit textual warrant in the book for the goodness of marital intimacy as divinely celebrated, not merely tolerated. Mandatory theologian review; never soften ‘berauscht euch.‘
Desire Teshuqah
Approved rendering: Verlangen
Transliteration: teshuqah
Doctrine: Restored Desire After the Fall
Rejected alternatives: Sehnsucht (imports a wistful, unfulfilled Romantic-era register absent from the text’s confident mutuality), Begierde (near-synonym for sinful concupiscence in older ascetic devotional German)
Original: תְּשׁוּקָה
Category: Beauty and Desire
Rare word occurring only 3x in the Hebrew Bible: Genesis 3:16 (desire under the Fall’s curse), Genesis 4:7 (sin’s predatory desire), and Song 7:10 (the husband’s desire for his wife, wholly positive and mutual). The single most theologically pointed lexical datum in the book. Mandatory theologian review with explicit Genesis 3:16/4:7 cross-referencing required every time this term is taught — the German word alone cannot carry this canonical echo.
Jealousy Fierce
Approved rendering: Eifer [ist] fest wie das Totenreich
Transliteration: qin’ah qashah khish’ol
Doctrine: Love Stronger Than Death and the Grave
Rejected alternatives: Eifersucht (pathologizing ‘-sucht’ suffix, cf. ‘Drogensucht’; wrongly implies obsessive possessiveness absent from the positive, God-echoing covenant jealousy of qin’ah)
Original: קִנְאָה קָשָׁה כִשְׁאוֹל / ζῆλος σκληρὸς ὡς ᾅδης
Category: Faithfulness and Longing
The same root (qin’ah) used of God’s own covenant jealousy (Exodus 20:5; 34:14). The established Lutherbibel rendering at this exact verse is ‘Eifer’; this curriculum requires ‘Eifer’ and flags any drift toward ‘Eifersucht’ for mandatory theologian review. Single highest-probability silent error identified for this curriculum.
Sheol Grave
Approved rendering: Totenreich
Transliteration: she’ol / Hadēs
Doctrine: Love Stronger Than Death and the Grave
Rejected alternatives: Hölle (anachronistically imports the NT/dogmatic doctrine of eternal conscious punishment; Sheol is the religiously neutral abode of the dead, not Gehenna)
Original: שְׁאוֹל / ᾅδης
Category: Faithfulness and Longing
Luther’s traditional OT-wide rendering of she’ol as ‘Hölle’ must not be silently perpetuated at 8:6; mandatory theologian review; must not be harmonized with NT ‘Hölle’ language.
Flame Of Yah
Approved rendering: eine [gewaltige] Feuerflamme
Transliteration: shalhevetyah
Doctrine: The Traditional Allegorical Reading (Christ and the Church)
Rejected alternatives: silently adjudicating the -yah element as either definitely the divine name or definitely a plain superlative, in either direction
Original: שַׁלְהֶבֶתְיָה / φλόγες αὐτῆς
Category: The Traditional Allegorical Reading
8:6c’s most debated word: possibly ‘flame of Yah’ (divine-name intensifying suffix) or an old Hebrew superlative unrelated to the divine name; genuinely disputed among Hebrew grammarians. If accepted, becomes the strongest textual anchor for the allegorical reading. Must be disclosed as a live scholarly question, not silently adjudicated; an explicit gloss (‘wörtlich möglicherweise: eine Flamme des HERRN’) requires theologian sign-off.
High Risk Terms
Covenant
Approved rendering: Bund
Transliteration: berit / diathēkē
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Inherited from Romans package; enforced identically for the Song of Solomon curriculum. Applied here as an interpretive/doctrinal-framing category extending marriage into covenant theology, though the Hebrew word berit does not itself occur in the book’s text — see the new ‘covenant_marriage_framing’ entry below for the extension-specific caution.
Sealed With The Spirit
Approved rendering: versiegelt
Transliteration: sphragizō
Doctrine: Sealing of the Holy Spirit / Allegorical Seal Typology
Inherited from Romans package (via the Ephesians 1:13 extension already present in the pipeline’s cumulative baseline); enforced identically for the Song of Solomon curriculum. This ownership/authentication seal-root vocabulary must be used consistently with ‘Siegel’ (seal_on_heart, 8:6) and ‘versiegelte Quelle’ (sealed_fountain, 4:12) to preserve a deliberate, textually-grounded three-way typological bridge across curricula. Mandatory theologian review whenever the resonance is drawn.
Church
Approved rendering: Gemeinde
Transliteration: ekklēsia
Doctrine: The Traditional Allegorical Reading (Christ and the Church)
Rejected alternatives: Kirche (institution-default)
Inherited from Romans package; enforced identically for the Song of Solomon curriculum. Relevant wherever teaching material draws the classical patristic/monastic Christ-and-Church allegorical reading from the book’s bridal imagery; must be presented as a legitimate historic tradition, not the book’s exclusive or default meaning.
Beloved Dod
Approved rendering: Geliebter / Geliebte
Transliteration: dod, dodi
Doctrine: The Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy
Rejected alternatives: Freund / Freundin (older Lutherbibel, now archaic-sounding and affection-flattening)
Original: דּוֹד / דּוֹדִי
Category: Marital Love and Intimacy
The book’s primary term of intimate marital-erotic address for the man, used throughout (1:2 and passim). Standardized on ‘Geliebter/Geliebte’ (matching revised Lutherbibel 2017/Einheitsübersetzung direction) for consistency and to preserve erotic-covenantal weight. Flag any drift back to ‘Freund/Freundin’ register.
Dark And Lovely
Approved rendering: dunkel und lieblich
Transliteration: shachor…naveh / melaina…kalē
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Rejected alternatives: schwarz, aber schön (KJV-derived adversative, not required by the Hebrew waw)
Original: שָׁחוֹר…וְנָאוָה / μέλαινα…καλή
Category: Beauty and Desire
The woman’s self-description of sun-darkened skin, paired affirmatively with beauty (1:5). Avoid the adversative ‘aber,’ which risks implying darkness and beauty are in tension — an unintended value judgment given Germany’s contemporary race/beauty discourse. Native speaker and theologian review recommended.
Adjuration Refrain
Approved rendering: Ich beschwöre euch…
Transliteration: hishba’ti etkhem…im-ta’iru…ad shetechpatz
Doctrine: Faithfulness and Longing / Patient and Rightly-Timed Desire
Original: הִשְׁבַּעְתִּי אֶתְכֶם…אִם־תָּעִירוּ…עַד שֶׁתֶּחְפָּץ / ὥρκισα ὑμᾶς
Category: Faithfulness and Longing
Structural oath-formula refrain occurring identically at 2:7, 3:5, and 8:4, charging the ‘daughters of Jerusalem’ not to force or rush love before its proper time. Must render with visibly consistent core vocabulary at all three occurrences per the baseline’s cross-document consistency discipline (cf. Romans 1:16-17/8:28/10:9-10).
Bride
Approved rendering: Braut
Transliteration: kallah / nymphē
Doctrine: Bridal Imagery and Marital Exclusivity / The Traditional Allegorical Reading
Original: כַּלָּה / νύμφη
Category: The Traditional Allegorical Reading
The woman’s formalized, covenantal marital status (4:8-5:1). Must be cross-checked against the baseline’s Critical-risk Ephesians 5:22-33 ‘Braut Christi’ household-code material; the typological connection should be handled deliberately in teaching material, not assumed automatically. Germany’s confessionally mixed audience holds distinct traditions (Pietist Brautmystik, Catholic Marian application, classical patristic Christ-Church reading) bearing on this term.
My Sister Endearment
Approved rendering: meine Schwester
Transliteration: achoti / adelphē mou
Doctrine: Bridal Imagery and Marital Exclusivity
Original: אֲחֹתִי / ἀδελφή μου
Category: The Traditional Allegorical Reading
ANE term of endearment for a spouse (4:9-12; 5:1-2), attested widely in Egyptian and other Near Eastern love poetry; not a claim of literal sibling relationship. Mandatory accompanying teaching-material note explaining the convention, to prevent an incest misreading by a modern German audience with no living equivalent convention. Distinguish clearly from the unrelated ‘little_sister’ (8:8) protective-guarding use.
Locked Garden
Approved rendering: verschlossener Garten
Transliteration: gan na’ul / kēpos kekleismenos
Doctrine: Sealed and Locked Exclusivity
Original: גַּן נָעוּל / κῆπος κεκλεισμένος
Category: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
The bride’s person/sexuality figured as a private garden reserved exclusively for her husband (4:12). Must not be softened into a purity-shame framing; the text presents exclusivity as positive and desirable, the lock being praised, not apologized for. Theologian review recommended for accompanying exposition.
Sealed Fountain
Approved rendering: versiegelte Quelle
Transliteration: ma’yan chatum / pēgē esphragismenē
Doctrine: Allegorical Seal Typology (Song and Ephesians)
Original: מַעְיָן חָתוּם / πηγὴ ἐσφραγισμένη
Category: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Reinforces the garden-exclusivity image with seal-vocabulary cognate to chotam (8:6) and the baseline’s Ephesians 1:13 ‘versiegelt’ (4:12). This three-way German consistency (Ephesians 1:13 / Song 4:12 / Song 8:6) must be deliberately preserved and coordinated across curricula.
Sought Not Found
Approved rendering: ich suchte ihn…fand ihn nicht
Transliteration: biqqashtiv…lo metza’tiv
Doctrine: Persistent Seeking Amid Absence
Original: בִּקַּשְׁתִּיו…לֹא מְצָאתִיו / ἐζήτησα…οὐχ εὗρον
Category: Faithfulness and Longing
Core motif of persistent, aching search for the beloved (3:1-2; 5:6), including mistreatment by the watchmen (5:7). Keep both halves (seeking and not-finding) present, not resolved prematurely into comfort language.
Altogether Desirable
Approved rendering: ganz und gar begehrenswert
Transliteration: machamadim
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Original: מַחֲמַדִּים
Category: Beauty and Desire
Superlative form of the root chamad (5:16) — the same root behind the Tenth Commandment’s ‘you shall not covet’ (Exodus 20:17), here celebrated entirely positively within marriage’s covenantal bounds. This root-word link must be drawn out explicitly in teaching material or the doctrinal nuance is lost.
Mutual Belonging Refrain
Approved rendering: Ich bin meines Geliebten, und mein Geliebter ist mein
Transliteration: ani ledodi vedodi li
Doctrine: Mutual Belonging and Reciprocity
Original: אֲנִי לְדוֹדִי וְדוֹדִי לִי
Category: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
The book’s central mutual-belonging refrain, in three variant forms (2:16; 6:3; 7:10, the last reversed to emphasize his desire for her). Must render with visibly consistent core vocabulary across all three occurrences while still allowing the German reader to perceive the deliberate emphasis-shift at 7:10.
Shulammite
Approved rendering: Sulamith
Transliteration: hashulammit
Doctrine: The Shulammite’s Identity and Its Modern Reception
Original: הַשּׁוּלַמִּית / ἡ Σουλαμῖτις
Category: Identity
Epithet of uncertain derivation applied to the woman (6:13[7:1] through 8:14). Distinctively German literary-cultural risk: ‘Sulamith’ carries heavy association with Paul Celan’s 1948 poem ‘Todesfuge,’ a fixture of German secondary-school curricula, symbolizing Jewish suffering under National Socialism. Does not preclude use of the biblical name; requires native-speaker/theologian awareness of this modern resonance.
Seal On Heart
Approved rendering: Siegel
Transliteration: chotam / sphragis
Doctrine: Allegorical Seal Typology (Song and Ephesians)
Original: חוֹתָם / σφραγίς
Category: The Traditional Allegorical Reading
The woman’s charge to be set as a seal upon the beloved’s heart and arm (8:6a), an ownership/authentication claim. Cognate with the baseline’s Ephesians 1:13 ‘versiegelt.’ Surface this deliberate cross-book resonance explicitly in teaching material rather than leaving it as coincidence.
Love Strong As Death
Approved rendering: Liebe [ist] stark wie der Tod
Transliteration: ahavah azzah khammavet
Doctrine: Love Stronger Than Death and the Grave
Original: אַהֲבָה עַזָּה כַמָּוֶת / κραταιὰ ὡς θάνατος ἀγάπη
Category: Faithfulness and Longing
Core passage centerpiece (8:6): love placed on the same totalizing plane as death itself. Must retain full comparative force in German; this is the book’s summary thesis statement and requires verbatim consistency wherever cited across curriculum material.
Covenant Marriage Framing
Approved rendering: Bund
Transliteration: berit / diathēkē (interpretive category, not a direct lexical occurrence)
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Original: בְּרִית / διαθήκη (interpretive category, not a direct lexical occurrence)
Category: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
The doctrinal-framing category applying ‘covenant’ to the marriage bond celebrated throughout the book, though berit does not itself occur in the text. Extends the baseline ‘covenant’ entry; present this as a legitimate theological synthesis (cf. Malachi 2:14) rather than implying direct lexical warrant within Song of Solomon itself.
Medium Risk Terms
Love Abstract Ahavah
Approved rendering: Liebe
Transliteration: ahavah / agapē
Doctrine: The Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy
Original: אַהֲבָה / ἀγάπη
Category: Marital Love and Intimacy
General noun for love/affection/loyalty (2:4, 2:5, 2:7, 8:6, 8:7). LXX’s use of agapē here is an early, historically significant attestation of the word for ardent erotic love — useful corrective against assuming agapē is intrinsically non-physical. German ‘Liebe’ is extremely broad and secularized; never let it stand alone as doctrinally sufficient at load-bearing points — retain the surrounding intensifying clauses (e.g. ‘stark wie der Tod’).
Vineyard Self
Approved rendering: Weinberg
Transliteration: kerem / ampelōn
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Original: כֶּרֶם / ἀμπελών
Category: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Literal cultivated vineyard, and metaphorically the woman’s own body/self (1:6, 2:15, 8:11-12). The metaphorical self/body sense requires an explicit gloss for German readers unfamiliar with the ANE body-as-cultivated-land convention.
Lovesick
Approved rendering: liebeskrank
Transliteration: cholat ahavah
Doctrine: Faithfulness and Longing
Rejected alternatives: Liebeskummer (modern pop-song register, trivializes the idiom’s honoring, non-pathological intent)
Original: חוֹלַת אַהֲבָה
Category: Faithfulness and Longing
Idiom naming longing itself as a legitimate, honored experience within covenantal love (2:5; 5:8). ‘liebeskrank’ is a recognized, if slightly literary/dated, German compound and is the recommended rendering.
Banner Of Love
Approved rendering: Feldzeichen / Banner
Transliteration: degel
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Original: דֶּגֶל
Category: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
‘His banner over me was love’ (2:4). Military/processional banner raised for identification and rallying. The martial connotation may read as jarring to contemporary German ears; teaching material should clarify the ANE convention of banners as public belonging-markers, reinforcing exclusivity rather than militarism.
Whom My Soul Loves
Approved rendering: den meine Seele liebt
Transliteration: she’ahavah nafshi
Doctrine: Faithfulness and Longing
Original: שֶׁאָהֲבָה נַפְשִׁי / ὃν ἠγάπησεν ἡ ψυχή μου
Category: Faithfulness and Longing
Refrain occurring four times in chapter 3 (3:1-4), locating love in the nefesh, the whole self, not merely body or emotion. German ‘Seele’ imports a sharper body/soul dualism than Hebrew nefesh; clarify as ‘my whole self’ in teaching material to avoid an unintended split reading in a book about embodied love.
Living Water Garden
Approved rendering: Quelle lebendigen Wassers
Transliteration: be’er mayim chayim / phrear hydatos zōntos
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Original: בְּאֵר מַיִם חַיִּים / φρέαρ ὕδατος ζῶντος
Category: Beauty and Desire
‘A well of living water’ (4:15), continuing the garden imagery of fruitfulness and life. Natural (not text-critically established) resonance with John 4:10-14’s ‘lebendiges Wasser’; flag for native speaker review to present any drawn connection as thematic/canonical resonance, not claimed authorial dependency.
My Perfect Dove
Approved rendering: meine Taube, meine Vollkommene
Transliteration: yonati tammati
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Original: יוֹנָתִי תַמָּתִי / περιστερά μου, τελεία μου
Category: Beauty and Desire
Borrows sacrificial ‘without blemish’ (tamim) cultic vocabulary and applies it to the beloved’s beauty and character (6:9). Surface the cultic-language borrowing explicitly in teaching material.
Awesome As Army
Approved rendering: erhaben wie Heerscharen mit Feldzeichen
Transliteration: ayummah kannidgalot
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Original: אֲיֻמָּה כַּנִּדְגָּלוֹת
Category: Beauty and Desire
Describes the woman’s overwhelming, reverence-inducing beauty (6:4, 6:10). German ‘Heerscharen’ carries strong liturgical resonance (‘HERR der Heerscharen,’ LORD of Hosts) — a potentially fruitful positive echo, but also a risk of reading as needlessly militaristic to a modern, pacifist-leaning audience without positive framing.
Navel Goblet Wasf
Approved rendering: dein Nabel [ist] wie ein rundes Becken
Transliteration: sharrekh aggan hassahar
Doctrine: The Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy
Original: שֹׁרְרֵךְ אַגַּן הַסַּהַר
Category: Marital Love and Intimacy
Part of the extended wasf (body-description poem) of chapter 7. Lexically stable, but German teaching material must explicitly frame the wasf as a recognized ANE/Arabic poetic genre so it is received as reverent delight, not embarrassment or comedy.
Love Cannot Be Bought
Approved rendering: wenn einer alle Habe seines Hauses um die Liebe geben wollte, man würde ihn doch nur verachten
Transliteration: im-yiten ish et-kol-hon beito ba’ahavah, boz yavuzu lo
Doctrine: Love as Priceless and Unpurchasable
Rejected alternatives: man würde es nicht gutheißen (too weak; understates the doubled Hebrew root’s total scorn)
Original: אִם־יִתֵּן אִישׁ אֶת־כָּל־הוֹן בֵּיתוֹ בָּאַהֲבָה, בּוֹז יָבוּזוּ לוֹ
Category: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
8:7b: love cannot be purchased; any attempt is shameful, not merely futile. ‘Verachten’ must carry the full weight of the doubled Hebrew root (boz yavuzu).
Solomons Vineyard Contrast
Approved rendering: Salomos Weinberg
Transliteration: kerem Shelomo
Doctrine: Contrast with Solomon’s Polygamy
Original: כֶּרֶם שְׁלֹמֹה
Category: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Contrasted with ‘my own vineyard,’ i.e. the woman’s own person, given freely and exclusively to her one beloved (8:11-12; anticipated at 6:8-9). Surface the textually grounded irony explicitly: Solomon, traditionally the book’s author/patron, was himself infamous (1 Kings 11) for many wives — do not flatten this tension.
Low Risk Terms
David
Approved rendering: David
Transliteration: David
Doctrine: The Superscription and Solomonic Authorship
Original: דָּוִד
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package; enforced identically for the Song of Solomon curriculum. Proper name, superscription (1:1) attributes the book to Solomon, David’s son; no new risk introduced by this book.
Peace
Approved rendering: Friede
Transliteration: shalom / eirēnē
Doctrine: Peace with God (baseline) / wordplay on Solomon’s name at 8:10
Inherited from Romans package; enforced identically for the Song of Solomon curriculum. Reused exactly for 8:10’s shalom, which contains a wordplay on Solomon’s own name (Shelomo) not visible in German ‘Friede’; supply a brief translator’s footnote preserving the wordplay information for teaching material.
Song Of Songs Title
Approved rendering: Hoheslied
Transliteration: Shir HaShirim / Asma Asmatōn
Doctrine: The Superscription and Solomonic Authorship
Rejected alternatives: Lied der Lieder (overly literal, non-standard), Canticle of Canticles-style Latinate calque (no German tradition)
Original: שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים / ᾎσμα ᾈσμάτων
Category: Book Identity
Superlative-of-genitive Hebrew construction, ‘the Song surpassing all songs.’ Stable across Lutherbibel and Einheitsübersetzung as ‘Hoheslied’ / ‘Das Hohelied Salomos’; no competing German rendering tradition.
Kiss
Approved rendering: Kuss
Transliteration: nesiqah / philēma
Doctrine: The Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy
Original: נְשִׁיקָה / φίλημα
Category: Marital Love and Intimacy
Opening image of desired physical intimacy (1:2). Stable rendering, no collision.
Palanquin
Approved rendering: Prunkwagen / Tragsessel
Transliteration: appiryon / phoreion
Doctrine: The Wedding as Covenantal Celebration
Original: אֲפִרְיוֹן / φορεῖον
Category: Literary Structure
Solomon’s ornate processional wedding carriage (3:9), likely itself a loanword and one of the rarest words in the Hebrew Bible. Rare-word status noted for teaching material as a lexical curiosity; no independent doctrinal weight.
Mandrakes
Approved rendering: Alraunen
Transliteration: dudaim / mandragoras
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Original: דּוּדָאִים / μανδραγόρας
Category: Marital Love and Intimacy
Fertility/aphrodisiac plant (7:14), also appearing in Genesis 30. Established German botanical term; minor motif with no independent doctrinal weight.
Many Waters Cannot Quench
Approved rendering: Große Wasser können die Liebe nicht auslöschen, und Ströme ertränken sie nicht
Transliteration: mayim rabbim lo yukhlu lekhabot et-ha’ahavah
Doctrine: Faithfulness and Longing
Rejected alternatives: zerstören (generic ‘destroy’; loses continuity with the preceding fire/flame image)
Original: מַיִם רַבִּים לֹא יוּכְלוּ לְכַבּוֹת אֶת־הָאַהֲבָה / ὕδωρ πολὺ οὐ δυνήσεται σβέσαι τὴν ἀγάπην
Category: Faithfulness and Longing
Love’s endurance under the most overwhelming, chaos-associated natural forces (8:7a). Retain ‘auslöschen’ (fire-extinguishing verb) to preserve continuity with 8:6c’s flame image.
Little Sister
Approved rendering: kleine Schwester
Transliteration: achot qetannah
Doctrine: Guarding Love Until Its Proper Time
Original: אָחוֹת קְטַנָּה
Category: Faithfulness and Longing
The brothers’ term for the woman’s earlier, pre-marriageable years (8:8), tied to the protective-guarding theme. Distinguish clearly in teaching material from the unrelated chapter 4 spousal endearment ‘meine Schwester.‘
Who Is This From Wilderness
Approved rendering: Wer ist die, die da heraufkommt von der Wüste
Transliteration: mi zot olah min-hamidbar
Doctrine: Literary Structure (inclusio marking the approach of the wedding and climax sections)
Original: מִי זֹאת עֹלָה מִן־הַמִּדְבָּר
Category: Literary Structure
Structural refrain opening both 3:6 and 8:5, marking an inclusio. Note the echo for teaching material on the book’s architecture; carries no independent doctrinal weight beyond structure.
Crown Wedding
Approved rendering: Krone
Transliteration: atarah / stephanos
Doctrine: The Wedding as Covenantal Celebration
Original: עֲטָרָה / στέφανος
Category: Marital Love and Intimacy
The crown Solomon’s mother placed on him on his wedding day (3:11), marking the wedding as a day of highest civic and familial joy; supports the goodness of marriage by association with coronation-level celebration.
Watchmen
Approved rendering: Wächter
Transliteration: shomrim / phylakes
Doctrine: Persistent Seeking Amid Absence
Original: שֹׁמְרִים / φύλακες
Category: Faithfulness and Longing
City guards the woman encounters at night (3:3, neutral/helpful; 5:7, violent). Note the sharp contrast in tone between the two occurrences for teaching material on the cost of persistent longing; do not flatten both to identical tone.
Rose And Lily
Approved rendering: Lilie / Narzisse vom Scharon
Transliteration: chavatzelet hasharon, shoshannah
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Original: חַבַצֶּלֶת הַשָּׁרוֹן / שׁוֹשַׁנָּה
Category: Beauty and Desire
Botanically uncertain flower imagery for delicate, cultivated beauty (2:1-2). The English devotional ‘Rose of Sharon’ Christ-title tradition has no equivalent fixed liturgical weight in German and should not be imported as though doctrinally settled.
Apple Tree
Approved rendering: Apfelbaum
Transliteration: tappuach / mēlon
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Original: תַּפּוּחַ / μῆλον
Category: Beauty and Desire
Image for the beloved man’s unique desirability among other men (2:3); supports the exclusivity doctrine. Stable rendering, no collision.
