Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference Analysis — 2 Corinthians (English → German)
Method and Scope
This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation, Old Testament allusion, messianic reference, and typological pattern in 2 Corinthians, chapter by chapter from 1 to 13, and cross-references each to parallel passages already translated in this pipeline (Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). Citations use the normalizable “Book Chapter:Verse” format (e.g., “2 Corinthians 5:21”, “Genesis 15:6”) throughout. A chapter with fewer formal quotations still receives a matrix row for its OT background allusions and NT parallels, per the full-book coverage mandate; no chapter is silently skipped.
Four risk categories are used for Translation Sensitivity, matching doctrine_risk_registry.json: Critical, High, Medium, Low.
PART A — Cross-Reference Matrix, Chapter by Chapter
2 Corinthians 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 1:3 | Suffering and Comfort in Ministry | God the Father | Allusion to the covenant “compassionate and gracious” formula (Exodus 34:6; Psalm 103:8,13) and to Isaiah 40:1 (“Comfort, comfort my people”), the fountainhead of the letter’s entire comfort vocabulary. | Medium. “Vater der Barmherzigkeit” must keep Barmherzigkeit (compassion, οἰκτιρμός) distinct from Gnade (grace, χάρις) — related but not interchangeable German-theological vocabulary. |
| 2 Corinthians 1:9-10 | Suffering and Comfort in Ministry | Paul | Echoes the “sentence of death” language of near-death OT laments (e.g., Psalm 118:17-18); anticipates the resurrection-hope logic of 2 Corinthians 4:14. | Low. |
| 2 Corinthians 1:19-20 | Sonship of Christ / Sincerity | Jesus Christ, Silvanus, Timothy | Messianic: echoes covenant-faithfulness formulas denying divine vacillation (Numbers 23:19, “God is not a man, that he should lie”). Direct NT parallel to the Sonship-of-Christ doctrine (Romans 1:4) and to the reliability of God’s promises theme of Romans 4:20-21. | Critical. “Sohn Gottes” must retain the baseline’s exact rendering; “Ja und Nein” / “Amen” per established transliteration standard. |
| 2 Corinthians 1:22 | Sealing of the Holy Spirit | Holy Spirit | Direct doctrinal parallel — same sealing/down-payment metaphor as Ephesians 1:13-14 (baseline terms versiegelt, Unterpfand). | High (per baseline). No new rendering; confirm exact reuse. |
2 Corinthians 2
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 2:5-11 | Generosity and Grace in Giving (forgiveness-adjacent) | the offending brother, the Corinthian church | Applies the forgiveness logic later systematized in Ephesians 4:32 (“forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you”). | Medium. |
| 2 Corinthians 2:14 | Power in Weakness / Genuine Apostleship | Paul, Christ | Roman-triumph background image; possible thematic echo of Psalm 68:18 (“You ascended on high, leading captives”), directly quoted in Ephesians 4:8. | Medium-High. Teach the ancient triumph ritual explicitly; cross-reference Ephesians 4:8 without asserting a direct verbal quotation here. |
| 2 Corinthians 2:14-16 | Power in Weakness | — | Typology: OT sacrificial “pleasing aroma” language (Genesis 8:21; Leviticus 1:9,13,17; Exodus 29:18). | Medium. |
| 2 Corinthians 2:17 | Sincerity and Apostolic Authority | false teachers (“many”) | Contrast with OT false prophets who “peddled” their own words (Jeremiah 23:16; Ezekiel 13:1-7). | High. |
2 Corinthians 3
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 3:1-3 | Sincerity and Apostolic Authority / New Covenant | Corinthian church | Contrasts human “letters of recommendation” with being a Spirit-written “letter.” Alludes to Exodus 31:18 (tablets of stone) and directly to Jeremiah 31:33 and Ezekiel 11:19/36:26 (law written on the heart). | Critical. The Jeremiah/Ezekiel heart-covenant promise is the letter’s whole New-Covenant argument; must be taught as fulfillment, not replacement-by-erasure, of God’s promise to Israel. |
| 2 Corinthians 3:6 | The New Covenant versus the Old | Moses, Paul | Direct quotation-in-substance of the “new covenant” promise of Jeremiah 31:31-34; “the letter kills, the Spirit gives life” restates the law/grace and letter/Spirit dialectic of Romans 7:6 and Romans 2:29. | Critical. Mandatory anti-supersessionist framing (see Part C rules below). |
| 2 Corinthians 3:7-11 | The New Covenant versus the Old | Moses | Direct narrative reference to Exodus 34:29-35 (the glory and veil on Moses’ face). | High. Character: Moses — teach with the same historical care as the baseline’s Matthew 17 Transfiguration material (Moses appears there too, Matthew 17:3). |
| 2 Corinthians 3:13-16 | The New Covenant versus the Old | Moses, “they” (Israel, historically and contemporaneously read) | Direct narrative reference to Exodus 34:33-35 (Moses veiling his face). | Critical. Mandatory anti-antisemitism framing, parallel to the baseline’s Matthew 23 and Romans 9-11 cautions; never taught as inherent Jewish spiritual inferiority. |
| 2 Corinthians 3:17 | Freedom in the Spirit / New Covenant | Holy Spirit | Direct doctrinal and near-verbal echo of Isaiah 61:1 (“the Spirit of the Lord… to proclaim liberty”), which is itself quoted at Luke 4:18-19 (baseline term nazareth_manifesto). Reuses baseline Freiheit (Critical, established from Galatians 5:1,13). | Critical. New primary passage for the existing Critical-risk Freiheit term; cross-teach with Luke 4:18-19. |
| 2 Corinthians 3:18 | New Creation in Christ / Sanctification | believers, Moses (by contrast) | Parallels Genesis 1:26-27 (the image of God), Romans 8:29 (“conformed to the image of his Son”), and Colossians 3:10 (“renewed… after the image of its creator”). | High. Must use “verwandelt,” never “verklärt” (reserved for Matthew 17:2’s transfigured). |
2 Corinthians 4
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 4:4 | Genuine versus False Apostleship / Deity of Christ | Satan (“the god of this age”), Christ | ”Image of God” directly parallels Genesis 1:27 and, in the NT, Colossians 1:15 (“image of the invisible God,” baseline term image_of_the_invisible_god). The blinding motif possibly echoes Isaiah 6:9-10, quoted at Matthew 13:14-15 and John 12:40. | Critical. Use “Ebenbild Gottes” so the German root noun matches the baseline’s established Colossians rendering; flag the blinding allusion for theologian awareness (dualism-avoidance caution already noted in 08_core_glossary.md). |
| 2 Corinthians 4:6 | New Creation in Christ | God, Christ | Direct quotation-in-substance of Genesis 1:3 (“Let there be light… let light shine out of darkness”). Thematically parallel to John 1:1-5 (light/darkness). | Critical. Keep “Licht” vocabulary aligned with the John 1 baseline material without claiming a direct verbal citation of John. |
| 2 Corinthians 4:7 | Power in Weakness | Paul and fellow ministers | Household-vessel imagery with general OT background (clay vessels as ordinary containers, e.g. Jeremiah 18:1-6’s potter image, applied differently). | Medium. |
| 2 Corinthians 4:13 | Faith / Sincerity | Paul | Direct quotation of Psalm 116:10 (LXX Psalm 115:1), “I believed, and so I spoke.” Parallels the belief-then-confession pattern of Romans 10:9-10. | Medium. Render “Ich glaubte, darum redete ich,” matching the established Lutherbibel Psalm wording. |
| 2 Corinthians 4:14 | Resurrection of Christ | God, Christ, believers | Reuses baseline Auferstehung; parallels Romans 4:25, Romans 8:11. | Medium (per baseline). |
2 Corinthians 5:1-10 (context for the core passage)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 5:1-4 | New Creation in Christ | believers | Tabernacle/tent (σκῆνος) background image; the same Greek root (σκηνόω/σκῆνος) underlies John 1:14’s “dwelt (eskēnōsen) among us.” | Medium. Note the linguistic kinship to John 1:14 without asserting it is the same word form used identically. |
| 2 Corinthians 5:2,4 | Suffering and Comfort in Ministry | believers | Parallels Romans 8:23 (“we ourselves groan, waiting for adoption… the redemption of our bodies”). | Low. Keep “seufzen” consistent with the Romans 8:23 rendering tradition. |
| 2 Corinthians 5:10 | Sincerity and Apostolic Authority | Christ, believers | Parallels Romans 14:10 (“we will all stand before the judgment seat of God”) and Ecclesiastes 12:14 (final accountability for deeds). | High. Distinguish from final condemnation of unbelievers, per 08_core_glossary.md. |
2 Corinthians 5:11-21 — Core Passage (see 07_semantic_analysis.md Part A for full verse-by-verse detail; cross-references summarized here)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 5:11 | Sincerity and Apostolic Authority | God, Paul | ”Fear of the Lord” echoes the OT wisdom-tradition formula (Proverbs 1:7; 9:10) and the accountability theme of 2 Corinthians 5:10 above. | High. |
| 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 | Reconciliation with God | Christ, “all” | Direct typological fulfillment of Isaiah 53:4-6,12 (the Suffering Servant dying vicariously “for” the many); the substitutionary ὑπέρ (“for”) logic parallels Romans 5:6-8. | Critical. |
| 2 Corinthians 5:16 | New Creation in Christ | — | Contrasts worldly/“fleshly” evaluation with Spirit-given perception; conceptually parallels Galatians 6:15’s circumcision-versus-new-creation contrast. | Critical (per baseline Fleisch; distinct evaluative sense flagged). |
| 2 Corinthians 5:17 | New Creation in Christ | believers | Echoes Isaiah 43:18-19 (“I am doing a new thing”), Isaiah 65:17, Isaiah 66:22 (new heavens and new earth), and Genesis 1 (created order); reuses baseline neue Schöpfung (Galatians 6:15). | High (per baseline). |
| 2 Corinthians 5:18-21 | Reconciliation with God | God, Christ, Paul, humanity | Typological fulfillment of the Day of Atonement sacrificial system (Leviticus 16) and of Isaiah 53 as a whole; the “not counting trespasses” language directly parallels Psalm 32:1-2 (itself quoted at Romans 4:7-8) and the imputation logic of Genesis 15:6 (quoted at Romans 4:3). | Critical. See Part C rendering-consistency rules below for the shared λογίζομαι (“reckon/impute”) vocabulary linking this passage to Romans 4. |
| 2 Corinthians 5:21 | Reconciliation with God | Christ | Direct typological fulfillment of Isaiah 53:6,9-10,12 (the sinless Servant bearing others’ iniquity) and the OT sin-offering pattern (Leviticus 4:1-35). Grammatically and doctrinally parallel to Galatians 3:13 (“Christ became a curse for us”) — same ἐγένετο/ἐποίησεν + noun construction. Also the direct NT-internal echo of Romans 1:17’s “righteousness of God.” | Critical — among the highest-sensitivity phrases in the entire pipeline. |
2 Corinthians 6
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 6:2 | Reconciliation with God | the Servant/God | Direct quotation of Isaiah 49:8 (“In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you”). | High. |
| 2 Corinthians 6:14 | Sincerity and Apostolic Authority | believers | Allusion to the mixed-kind prohibitions of Deuteronomy 22:10 and Leviticus 19:19. | Medium. |
| 2 Corinthians 6:16-18 | Reconciliation with God / Church as God’s People | God, Israel, believers | A dense composite catena: “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them” (Leviticus 26:11-12; Ezekiel 37:27); “I will be their God, and they shall be my people” (Jeremiah 31:33; Ezekiel 37:27; Exodus 6:7); “Come out from their midst, and be separate… touch no unclean thing” (Isaiah 52:11; Ezekiel 20:34,41); “I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters” (2 Samuel 7:14; Isaiah 43:6). Directly parallels the corporate-temple ecclesiology of Ephesians 2:19-22 and the adoption doctrine of Romans 8:15 (baseline Kindschaft). | Critical. This is the letter’s densest single composite OT quotation. Note in Part C below that “sons and daughters” (6:18) explicitly broadens the adoption language beyond the “sons” wording elsewhere in the pipeline — German Kindschaft (a gender-unmarked noun) already accommodates this without forcing a masculine-only rendering, an asset worth flagging positively for reviewers. |
2 Corinthians 7
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 7:1 | Sanctification | believers | Holiness-code background (Leviticus purity legislation generally); reuses baseline heilig/Heiligung. | Medium (per baseline). |
| 2 Corinthians 7:6 | Suffering and Comfort in Ministry | God, Titus, Paul | Direct thematic descent from Isaiah 40:1 (“Comfort, comfort my people”), Isaiah 49:13, Isaiah 51:12, and Isaiah 61:2 (“comfort all who mourn”) — the prophetic fountainhead of the whole comfort/παράκλησις vocabulary opened in 2 Corinthians 1:3-7. | Medium. |
| 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 | Suffering and Comfort in Ministry (repentance) | the Corinthian church | Parallels the penitential-psalm pattern of Psalm 51 and the call to genuine (not merely ritual) repentance in Joel 2:12-13. Reuses baseline Buße (repentance). | High (per baseline). |
2 Corinthians 8 — Generosity and Grace in Giving
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 8:9 | Generosity and Grace in Giving / Deity of Christ | Christ | Direct theological parallel (kenosis pattern, not a verbal quotation) to Philippians 2:6-8 (baseline terms Gestalt Gottes, entäußerte sich): “though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor.” | Critical. Must echo the Philippians kenosis vocabulary and doctrine exactly — voluntary self-impoverishment, never a diminishment of Christ’s essential deity. |
| 2 Corinthians 8:15 | Generosity and Grace in Giving | Israel in the wilderness | Direct quotation of Exodus 16:18 (“he who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack” — the manna narrative). | Critical (giving/equality principle grounded in a Torah narrative; must not be read as endorsing enforced economic leveling — see 08_core_glossary.md “equality” entry). |
2 Corinthians 9
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 9:6 | Generosity and Grace in Giving | — | Reuses baseline säen/ernten (Galatians 6:7-8), a new primary passage for this Critical-risk term applied specifically to financial generosity. | Critical (per baseline). |
| 2 Corinthians 9:9 | Generosity and Grace in Giving | the righteous giver | Direct quotation of Psalm 112:9 (“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever”). | High. Ties “his righteousness” (Gerechtigkeit) explicitly to concrete generosity — teach alongside the baseline’s forensic-Gerechtigkeit caution so this ethical-fruit usage is not confused with justification’s forensic ground. |
| 2 Corinthians 9:10 | Generosity and Grace in Giving | God | Allusion to Isaiah 55:10 (“seed to the sower and bread to eat”) and Hosea 10:12 (“sow righteousness, reap steadfast love”). | Medium. |
2 Corinthians 10 — Genuine versus False Apostleship (introduction)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 | Genuine versus False Apostleship | Paul, rival teachers | General OT military-metaphor background (e.g. Psalm 18:34-40; Psalm 144:1); related but distinct spiritual-warfare imagery cluster from Ephesians 6:10-20 (baseline die Waffenrüstung Gottes). | Medium-High. |
| 2 Corinthians 10:17 | Genuine versus False Apostleship / Sincerity | — | Direct quotation of Jeremiah 9:24 (“Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord”). Parallels Romans 3:27 (boasting excluded) and the not-of-works logic of Ephesians 2:9. | Critical. See Part C rendering-consistency rules below. |
| 2 Corinthians 10:18 | Genuine versus False Apostleship | — | Echoes the wisdom-proverb “Let another praise you, and not your own mouth” (Proverbs 27:2). | Medium. |
2 Corinthians 11 — Genuine versus False Apostleship (main argument)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 11:2 | Genuine versus False Apostleship / Church as Bride | Paul, Christ, the Corinthian church | Covenant-marriage imagery echoing Hosea 2:19-20, Jeremiah 2:2, Isaiah 62:5. Direct NT parallel to the bridal-church imagery of Ephesians 5:25-32 (baseline doctrine household_code_marriage, Critical). | Critical. Must be cross-taught with the Ephesians 5 marriage/church material’s existing mandatory-review requirement, and must not be flattened into a merely sentimental image — this is covenant-fidelity language with real polemical force against the rival teachers. |
| 2 Corinthians 11:3 | Genuine versus False Apostleship | the serpent, Eve | Direct narrative allusion to Genesis 3:1-6,13 (the serpent’s deception of Eve). | High. Character: the serpent, Eve — teach as a warning-typology (vulnerability to deceptive cunning), not as commentary on women’s spiritual capacity generally — a genuine pastoral-sensitivity note for German audiences familiar with historic misuses of this passage. |
| 2 Corinthians 11:14 | Genuine versus False Apostleship | Satan | No direct OT quotation; thematically continues the Genesis 3 deception motif and the “angel of light” masquerade image, distantly related to the later “Day Star” tradition of Isaiah 14:12-15. | Medium-High. |
| 2 Corinthians 11:23-33 | Power in Weakness / Genuine Apostleship | Paul | Paul’s suffering catalogue functions as counter-”credentials” against the rival teachers; broadly parallel in spirit to the prophetic suffering of figures like Jeremiah (Jeremiah 20:1-2; 37:15-16) and Elijah (1 Kings 19:1-4), though not a formal quotation. | Medium. |
2 Corinthians 12 — Power in Weakness
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 12:2-4 | Power in Weakness | Paul | Background cosmology shared with Ezekiel 1 and Isaiah 6’s throne-visions; “paradise” cross-references the baseline im Paradiese (Luke 23:43), and distantly Eden itself (Genesis 2:8-15). | Medium-High. |
| 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 | Power in Weakness | Paul, Satan (“a messenger of Satan”) | Typological parallel to Job’s unresolved, unhealed suffering despite righteousness (Job 2:1-10; 42:1-6) and to Deuteronomy 33:25 (“as your days, so shall your strength be”). | Critical. |
| 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 | Power in Weakness | Christ, Paul | Direct doctrinal parallel to Philippians 4:13’s contentment-through-Christ doctrine; contrasts with the legitimate-boasting formula of 2 Corinthians 10:17/Jeremiah 9:24 above. | High. |
2 Corinthians 13
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Corinthians 13:1 | Genuine versus False Apostleship (church discipline procedure) | Paul, the Corinthian church | Direct quotation of Deuteronomy 19:15 (“Every charge must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses”), the identical OT text underlying Matthew 18:16. | Critical. See Part C rendering-consistency rules below — mandatory verbatim match with the Matthew package’s existing rendering. |
| 2 Corinthians 13:4 | Power in Weakness / Deity of Christ | Christ, Paul | Direct doctrinal parallel to Philippians 2:7-9’s kenosis-then-exaltation pattern (“crucified in weakness… lives by the power of God”). | Critical. |
| 2 Corinthians 13:13-14 | Sincerity and Apostolic Authority (closing) | Lord Jesus Christ, God, Holy Spirit | Trinitarian formula directly parallel to the baptismal Trinitarian formula of Matthew 28:19 (baseline great_commission). | Critical. See Part C rendering-consistency rules below. |
PART B — Messianic References and Typological Summary
| Typological Pattern | 2 Corinthians Passage(s) | OT Type/Background | Fulfillment Logic | Cross-Curriculum Parallel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Suffering Servant | 5:14-15, 21 | Isaiah 53 | Christ’s substitutionary death “for” and “as” sin | Galatians 3:13; Mark 10:45 (son_of_man_ransom); John 1:29 (lamb_of_god) |
| The Day of Atonement sacrifice | 5:18-21 | Leviticus 16 | God himself provides and accepts the reconciling sacrifice | Romans 3:25 (atonement); Colossians 2:14 (certificate_of_debt) |
| Moses’ veiled glory | 3:7-18 | Exodus 34:29-35 | A fading, mediated glory superseded by an unfading, unveiled glory in Christ | Matthew 17:1-13 (Transfiguration — Moses himself present) |
| The New Covenant heart-inscription | 3:3, 6 | Jeremiah 31:31-34; Ezekiel 36:26-27 | The Spirit writes the law on hearts rather than stone | Romans 2:29; Hebrews-adjacent covenant theology (not in this pipeline) |
| Eden’s light-and-darkness | 4:6 | Genesis 1:3 | God who spoke creation’s first light now shines gospel-light in hearts | John 1:1-5, 9 |
| The wilderness manna | 8:15 | Exodus 16:13-18 | God’s proportionate provision models proportionate generosity among churches | (no direct pipeline parallel; internal OT typology) |
| Eve’s deception by the serpent | 11:3 | Genesis 3:1-6, 13 | The church’s vulnerability to persuasive deception mirrors Eve’s | (typological warning, not gender commentary) |
| The righteous sufferer (Job) | 12:7-10 | Job 2:1-10; 42:1-6 | Unhealed affliction coexists with, rather than contradicts, divine favor | Philippians 4:11-13 (contentment_through_christ) |
| Israel as God’s dwelling-place | 6:16-18 | Leviticus 26:11-12; Ezekiel 37:27 | The church, not a building, becomes the locus of God’s presence | Ephesians 2:19-22; John 1:14 |
| The betrothed bride | 11:2 | Hosea 2:19-20; Jeremiah 2:2; Isaiah 62:5 | The church is presented as a pure bride to her one husband, Christ | Ephesians 5:25-32 |
PART C — Parallels to Other Curricula and Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations
C.1 Passage-Level Parallel Table
| 2 Corinthians Passage | Parallel Passage(s) in Prior Curricula | Shared Theme/Term | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5:14 (“one died for all”) | Romans 5:6-8 | Substitutionary ὑπέρ (“for”) | Use “für” with explicit substitutionary framing (“an unserer/ihrer Stelle”) in teaching material for both; German preposition alone is insufficient without exposition. |
| 5:19 (“not counting their trespasses”) | Romans 4:3, 7-8 (quoting Genesis 15:6 and Psalm 32:1-2) | λογίζομαι (“reckon/impute/credit”) | Both must use “anrechnen” (never a flattening “vergeben”) so the German reader recognizes the shared forensic-ledger metaphor across Romans and 2 Corinthians. Mandatory theologian review. |
| 5:21 (“made him sin”) | Galatians 3:13 (“became a curse for us”) | Substitutionary ἐγένετο/ἐποίησεν + abstract noun construction | Both must preserve the “gemacht/geworden zu [Substantiv]” construction (never an adjective, “sündig/verflucht”) to keep the shared grammatical-theological pattern visible; teach the two passages side by side. |
| 5:21 (“become the righteousness of God”) | Romans 1:17 | Gerechtigkeit Gottes | Identical German term Gerechtigkeit required; forensic, credited sense must be preserved in both, never an infused-process reading. |
| 3:6, 3:17 | Romans 7:6; Galatians 5:1, 13 | Gesetz/Buchstabe versus Geist; Freiheit | Freiheit rendering and surrounding context-glossing rules apply identically; see also C.2 below for the letter/Spirit antisemitism-sensitivity rule. |
| 3:18 | Romans 8:29; Colossians 3:10 | Image-transformation (εἰκών) | Use “verwandelt (werden) nach seinem Bild,” never “verklärt” (reserved for Matthew 17:2). |
| 4:4 | Colossians 1:15 | εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ (“image of God”) | Use “Ebenbild Gottes” — same root noun as Colossians’ “Ebenbild des unsichtbaren Gottes” — even though 2 Corinthians 4:4’s shorter Greek phrase lacks “unsichtbar.” |
| 6:16-18 | Ephesians 2:19-22 | Corporate temple/dwelling-of-God ecclesiology | Keep “wohnen” vocabulary consistent with John 1:14’s “wohnte unter uns” where teaching material draws the connection; avoid “Kirche”-as-building associations per the baseline’s Gemeinde/Kirche caution. |
| 6:18 (“sons and daughters”) | Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6 (Kindschaft/Abba) | Adoption | German Kindschaft is gender-unmarked and already accommodates 6:18’s explicit “and daughters” without forcing a masculine-only rendering — flag this positively; do not narrow to “Söhne” alone when translating 6:18 specifically. |
| 8:9 | Philippians 2:6-8 | Kenosis (voluntary self-impoverishment/self-emptying) | Use vocabulary consistent with the established entäußerte sich exposition (voluntary addition of poverty/servant-form, never subtraction of deity) even though 8:9 does not use the verb κενόω itself. |
| 9:6 | Galatians 6:7-8 | säen/ernten (Critical baseline term) | Identical German rendering required; God remains the implicit guarantor in both; avoid a prosperity-gospel misreading in the 2 Corinthians 9 financial context specifically. |
| 10:4-5 | Ephesians 6:10-20 | Spiritual-warfare military metaphor | Distinguish 2 Corinthians’ argument-demolition imagery (“Festungen”) from the Ephesians full-body-armor image (“Waffenrüstung”); related but not identical vocabulary — do not merge renderings. |
| 10:17 | Romans 3:27; Ephesians 2:9 (thematic, not verbal) | Jeremiah 9:24 quotation; exclusion of self-boasting | Render “Wer sich rühmt, der rühme sich des Herrn” per established Lutherbibel wording; keep Herr (Critical baseline term) fully exalted in sense. |
| 11:2 | Ephesians 5:25-32 | Christ-and-church bridal imagery | Cross-teach with the Ephesians household-code marriage material’s existing mandatory theologian-and-native-speaker review; both passages must present Christ’s self-giving love as central, never a one-sided authority claim. |
| 12:9-10 | Philippians 4:11-13 | Sufficiency/contentment through Christ | Keep “Genüge” vocabulary consistent across both; both require the decontextualization warning (never a general success-guarantee, always anchored to the specific affliction/circumstance in view). |
| 13:1 | Matthew 18:16 | Deuteronomy 19:15 quotation | Mandatory verbatim match. Both must render Deuteronomy 19:15’s “zwei oder drei Zeugen” identically. |
| 13:4 | Philippians 2:7-9 | Kenosis-then-exaltation pattern | Cross-teach explicitly; “gekreuzigt in Schwachheit… lebt durch die Kraft Gottes” should echo the established hoch erhöht exposition’s power/weakness/exaltation logic. |
| 13:13-14 | Matthew 28:19 (Trinitarian formula, distinct wording); general Trinitarian benediction tradition | Trinitarian confession | Render 13:13-14 to match the established German ecumenical liturgical benediction wording verbatim (see 07/08’s Trinitarian benediction entries), distinct in wording from but doctrinally consistent with Matthew 28:19’s baptismal formula. |
C.2 Explicit Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared/Sensitive Quotations
- Deuteronomy 19:15 (2 Corinthians 13:1; Matthew 18:16): render identically in both documents — “Jede Sache soll durch die Aussage von zwei oder drei Zeugen festgestellt werden” (or the established Lutherbibel equivalent) — with no stylistic variation between the two curricula.
- Genesis 15:6 / Psalm 32:1-2 imputation vocabulary (2 Corinthians 5:19; Romans 4:3, 7-8): the German verb anrechnen (not “vergeben,” not “zuschreiben”) must be used in all four occurrences so the shared λογίζομαι root is visible to a reader moving between curricula.
- Isaiah 53 substitutionary vocabulary (2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:13; Mark 10:45; John 1:29): keep the “für uns/für viele” (for us/for many) substitutionary preposition explicit and paired with exposition in every occurrence; never let any single occurrence stand as a merely exemplary-death reading.
- Jeremiah 31:31-34 new covenant vocabulary (2 Corinthians 3:6; Matthew 26:28’s “Blut des Bundes”): use neuer Bund consistently; every occurrence requires the mandatory anti-supersessionist framing already flagged in
08_core_glossary.md. - Ephesians 5:25-32 / 2 Corinthians 11:2 bridal imagery: both require identical doctrinal framing emphasizing Christ’s self-giving love as prior to and grounding the church’s fidelity — never taught with the fidelity-demand emphasized in isolation from the love that grounds it.
- Jeremiah 9:24 boasting formula (2 Corinthians 10:17): render “Wer sich rühmt, der rühme sich des Herrn” — this specific wording should be flagged in translation memory as the fixed German rendering for any future curriculum in this pipeline that also quotes Jeremiah 9:24 or 1 Corinthians 1:31.
- Trinitarian benediction (2 Corinthians 13:13-14): must match the established German ecumenical liturgical benediction text verbatim, on the same footing as the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) and the Great Commission’s baptismal formula (Matthew 28:19); any deviation is immediately noticeable to a churchgoing German audience and must be flagged for theologian review before acceptance.
PART D — Full-Book Coverage Confirmation
Every chapter of 2 Corinthians (1 through 13) has received at least one cross-reference matrix row above, covering direct OT quotations, OT allusions, typological patterns, messianic references, and parallels to prior curricula in this pipeline (Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). No chapter is silently omitted. The core passage (2 Corinthians 5:11-21) receives the densest treatment, consistent with its status as this curriculum’s theological anchor, while retaining full coverage of the letter’s remaining twelve chapters per the PRD’s full-book mandate.
