Cross-Reference Analysis

09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — 1 John (Full Book) — English → Burmese

Methodology

Per PRD Phase 1 Step 3, this document covers every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every instance of typology, and every substantive parallel to the destination language’s existing Romans curriculum, spanning 1 John chapters 1 through 5 in full. 1 John, unlike Romans, contains no formula OT citations introduced by “as it is written”; its use of the OT is almost entirely allusive and typological, filtered through the vocabulary and theology of John’s Gospel. Every chapter is represented below; where a section contains no direct scriptural allusion requiring translation comment, this is explicitly noted rather than silently omitted. All citations are given in normalizable “Book Chapter:Verse” form (e.g., “Genesis 15:6”, “Romans 3:25”). Burmese renderings cited below reuse the baseline translation_memory.json and the 1 John-specific terms registered in analysis/08_core_glossary.md exactly.

Part A — Cross-Reference Matrix by Chapter

Chapter 1 (1 John 1:1–10)

PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
1 John 1:1The eternal Word made knownChrist (the Word of Life)Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning”); John 1:1-2, 1:14 (direct verbal echo: “the Word… the Word became flesh”)အသက်တော်၏ နှုတ်ကပါဌ်တော် must be taught as the same eternal person named in John 1:1, not an abstract teaching. See baseline incarnation doctrine; the “beginning” language must not evoke a cyclical cosmology of repeating world-ages.
1 John 1:1–3Apostolic eyewitness testimony to the incarnate ChristThe apostles (implied “we”)John 1:14 (“we have seen his glory”); Luke 1:1-2 (eyewitness tradition)Sensory verbs (heard/seen/touched) must retain full physical, historical force — directly opposes any docetic or illusory-appearance framing familiar from Burmese spirit-manifestation narratives.
1 John 1:2Eternal life made manifestChrist; the FatherJohn 1:4 (“in him was life”); John 11:25ထာဝရအသက် (eternal life) — Critical term; see Chapter 5 below for full treatment.
1 John 1:5”God is light”GodPsalm 27:1 (“The LORD is my light”); Isaiah 60:19-20; 1 Timothy 6:16 (“who dwells in unapproachable light”)Companion thesis statement to “God is love” (4:8, 16). Must be rendered as an ontological claim about the personal God’s essential moral nature and self-revelation, never as a description compatible with a meditatively-attained “light of insight” (ပညာအလင်းရောင်).
1 John 1:6–7Walking in light vs. darknessbelievers; “if we say”Isaiah 2:5 (“let us walk in the light of the LORD”); Psalm 89:15မှောင်မိုက် (darkness) = moral corruption/alienation, not the mere physical absence of light nor a lesser cosmological realm.
1 John 1:7Cleansing by the blood of JesusChristLeviticus 17:11 (“the life is in the blood… to make atonement”); Exodus 12:13 (Passover blood typology); Hebrews 9:22အသွေးတော် (blood) must never be associated with folk animal-blood offerings presented by a human worshiper to appease a nat; here God himself provides the atoning blood.
1 John 1:8–10Universal sinfulness; confessionbelievers1 Kings 8:46 (“there is no one who does not sin”); Psalm 51:1-4 (David’s confession); Ecclesiastes 7:20; parallel: Romans 3:23 (“all have sinned”)Both curricula must render “sin” as အပြစ် consistently (baseline reuse); see Rendering-Consistency Rule 4 below.
1 John 1:9Confession and forgivenessbelievers; GodPsalm 32:5; Proverbs 28:13 (“whoever confesses and renounces… finds mercy”)ဝန်ခံခြင်း (confess) / ခွင့်လွှတ်ခြင်း (forgive) — see full doctrine treatment; never gradual karmic demerit-depletion.

Chapter 2 (1 John 2:1–29)

PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
1 John 2:1Christ our AdvocateChrist; the FatherJob 16:19-21 (Job’s longing for a heavenly advocate); Zechariah 3:1-5 (the Accuser opposed by the Angel of the LORD who defends); Romans 8:34 (“Christ Jesus… who indeed is interceding for us”)ခုခံချေပပေးသူ (advocate) — a specific legal-defense function; never framed as one intermediary among many, as with the 37 nats. Parallels Romans 8:34’s intercession language; see Rendering-Consistency notes below.
1 John 2:2Propitiation for the sins of the whole worldChristLeviticus 16:15-16 (Day of Atonement, the kapporeth/mercy seat); Isaiah 53:5-6, 53:11-12 (the Servant bears iniquity); parallel: Romans 3:25 (ἱλαστήριον, “propitiation,” of Christ’s blood)CRITICAL — See Rendering-Consistency Rule 1. Both ἱλασμός (1 John 2:2; 4:10) and ἱλαστήριον (Romans 3:25) render the same OT sacrificial reality and must share the Burmese term အပြစ်ဖြေရာယဇ်.
1 John 2:7–8The old/new commandment to lovebelieversLeviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor as yourself”); John 13:34 (“A new commandment I give you… love one another”)ပညတ်တော် (commandment) — distinct from baseline ပညတ်တရား (the whole Mosaic Law); see Rendering-Consistency Rule 6, tied to Romans 13:8-10.
1 John 2:9–11Light/darkness and love/hate for the brotherbelieversLeviticus 19:17 (“You shall not hate your brother in your heart”); Isaiah 6:10 (spiritual blindness)ညီအစ်ကို (brother) — the new spiritual family; risk of narrowing to biological/ethnic kin, significant in Myanmar’s family-honor culture around conversion.
1 John 2:12–14Assurance addressed to the whole church (children/fathers/young men)believers at various maturityJoel 2:28 (the Spirit poured on all generations, sons and daughters, old and young — pattern of intergenerational address)No direct doctrinal risk; reviewed for completeness — pastoral address pattern only.
1 John 2:15–17Do not love the worldbelieversGenesis 3:6 (Eve’s threefold temptation pattern: “good for food… pleasing to the eye… desirable” strikingly parallels “desire of flesh, desire of eyes, pride of life”); Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:11 (vanity of worldly pursuit); 1 Timothy 6:9-10လောက (world) — must be taught as a moral-spiritual order opposed to God, not a cosmological tier (kāma-loka) in Theravada cosmology; the Genesis 3 typology (the pattern of temptation) should be surfaced in teaching notes.
1 John 2:18The last hour; antichrist(s) coming”many antichrists”Daniel 7:23-25, 11:36 (the arrogant end-times king); 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 (“the man of lawlessness”); Matthew 24:24 (“false christs and false prophets”)အန္တီခရစ် (antichrist) — CRITICAL. See Messianic References below; never conflated with Burmese folk-eschatological figures or with မိတ္တေယျ (Metteyya).
1 John 2:19Apostasy reveals never having truly belongedfalse teachers who departedMatthew 7:23 (“I never knew you”); parallel: Romans 9:6 (“not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel”) — the theme of visible membership vs. true belongingSensitive teaching point; must not be framed as a merit-tally failure but as evidence regarding the nature of true new birth.
1 John 2:20, 2:27The anointing from the Holy Onebelievers; “the Holy One” (Christ)1 Samuel 16:13 (anointing of David, typological pattern of Spirit-empowerment); Isaiah 61:1 (“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me… he has anointed me”)ဘိသိက်တော် (anointing) — must be taught as a universal Spirit-endowment for every believer, not a rite reserved for religious specialists, distinguishing from royal/priestly anointing typology which pointed forward to this universal fulfillment.
1 John 2:22Denial that Jesus is the Christ”the liar”Psalm 2:2, 2:7 (“against his Anointed… You are my Son”); Daniel 9:25-26 (the Messiah/Anointed One cut off)See Messianic References below. Directly reuses baseline messianic_promise Critical doctrine.
1 John 2:25The promise of eternal lifeGod; believersGenesis 3:15 (the first messianic promise, remotely); Daniel 12:2 (“everlasting life”); parallel: Romans 6:23 (“eternal life… through Jesus Christ our Lord”)ထာဝရအသက် — see Chapter 5; must render identically to its Romans occurrences per theological-consistency mandate (baseline principle extended).
1 John 2:29Practicing righteousness as evidence of new birthbelieversEzekiel 18:5-9 (the righteous person defined by conduct); parallel: Romans 2:13 (“the doers of the law will be justified”)ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း (righteousness, baseline reuse, Critical) combined with ဘုရားသခင်ထံမှ ဖွားမြင်ခြင်း (born of God, Critical, new term) — righteous conduct is evidence of, never the ground of, new birth; must not slide into a merit-based reading.

Chapter 3 (1 John 3:1–24)

PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
1 John 3:1–2Children of God; future glorificationbelievers; the FatherHosea 1:10 (“you are sons of the living God”); Deuteronomy 14:1 (“You are the sons of the LORD your God”); parallel: Romans 8:14-17, 8:29 (adoption; conformed to the image of the Son)See Rendering-Consistency Rule 2 below: “children of God” (τέκνα θεοῦ, organic) and “adoption” (υἱοθεσία, Romans, legal) describe the same reality via two metaphors; keep distinct Burmese terms but teach as complementary.
1 John 3:4Sin defined as lawlessnessPsalm 51:1-4 (sin against God himself); Torah concept of transgression against covenantပညတ်တော်ကို ဖီဆန်ခြင်း — sin as rebellion against a personal God’s revealed will, not violation of an impersonal cosmic order (dharma-like).
1 John 3:5, 3:8Christ’s sinlessness; Christ’s mission to destroy the devil’s worksChrist; the devilIsaiah 53:9 (“he had done no violence”); Genesis 3:1-5, 3:15 (the serpent; the promised crushing of the serpent’s head)Genesis 3:15 typology: Christ’s mission (3:8) fulfills the ancient promise that the woman’s offspring would destroy the serpent’s works — a foundational typological link for teaching the Incarnation and Antichrist doctrine together.
1 John 3:9Seed of God abiding in the believerbelieversGenesis 3:15 (“her offspring/seed”); 1 Peter 1:23 (“born again… of imperishable seed”); Isaiah 53:10 (“he shall see his offspring”)ဘုရားသခင်၏ မျိုးစေ့တော် — must be distinguished from kamma-bīja (karma-seeds ripening through the sower’s own deeds); God’s own implanted life, not self-sown merit.
1 John 3:10–12Cain and AbelCain; AbelDirect OT narrative citation: Genesis 4:1-16; Hebrews 11:4 (Abel’s sacrifice accepted by faith); Hebrews 12:24 (“the sprinkled blood… than the blood of Abel”)Typology: Abel’s accepted sacrifice (by faith) versus Cain’s rejected work (Genesis 4:4-5) prefigures the grace-versus-works contrast central to both 1 John and Romans (cf. Romans 4:1-8). Requires OT narrative background teaching for first-generation believers with low OT literacy; proper names ကာဣန်/အာဗေလ already established.
1 John 3:13The world’s hatred of believersbelievers; “the world”Genesis 4:8 (Cain’s murder as the pattern of the world’s hostility); John 15:18-19လောက (world) hatred rooted in the Cain pattern; reinforces that κόσμος is a moral-spiritual order, not a cosmological realm.
1 John 3:14–15Passing from death to life; hatred as murderbelieversDeuteronomy 30:19 (“I have set before you life and death”); Matthew 5:21-22 (hatred equated with murder)သေခြင်း / အသက်ရှင်ခြင်း — a decisive, once-for-all spiritual transition already accomplished, never a gradual improvement across successive rebirths.
1 John 3:16Christ laid down his life; the pattern for loveChristIsaiah 53:12 (“he poured out his life”); John 10:11, 15:13 (“Greater love has no one than this…”)Direct verbal echo of John 15:13; reinforces the sacrificial, self-giving definition of ἀγάπη central to the core passage.
1 John 3:17Compassion toward a brother in needbelieversDeuteronomy 15:7-8 (open-handed generosity toward a poor brother); Proverbs 21:13သနားညှာတာသောစိတ် — practical compassion as necessary evidence, not mere sentiment.
1 John 3:20God knows all thingsGodPsalm 139:1-4 (God’s complete knowledge); 1 Samuel 16:7Reinforces God’s personal omniscience as ground for confident conscience, not an impersonal cosmic ledger.
1 John 3:21–22Confidence in prayerbelieversPsalm 66:18-20; parallel: Romans 8:15-16 (Spirit-given confidence to approach the Father)ရဲရင့်စွာချဉ်းကပ်နိုင်သော စိတ်ချမှု (confidence) — see full treatment, Chapter 4/5 below and Rendering-Consistency Rule 3.
1 John 3:23The commandment: believe in Christ and love one anotherbelieversparallel: Romans 13:8-10 (“love fulfills the law”)See Rendering-Consistency Rule 6.
1 John 3:24Mutual abiding evidenced by the Spiritbelievers; God; the SpiritEzekiel 36:27 (“I will put my Spirit within you”); parallel: Romans 8:9, 8:16 (the indwelling Spirit as evidence of belonging to Christ)ဝိညာဉ်တော် (Spirit) — Critical per baseline; must never be rendered ဝိညာဉ် alone or နတ်ဝိညာဉ်.

Chapter 4 (1 John 4:1–21)

Verses 1–6 (introductory material preceding the core passage):

PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
1 John 4:1Test the spiritsbelievers; false prophetsDeuteronomy 13:1-3 (“if a prophet… test him”); Deuteronomy 18:20-22 (a prophet’s word tested against fulfillment); 1 Kings 22:19-23 (true vs. false prophecy in Ahab’s court); Jeremiah 23:16-22ဝိညာဉ်များကို စစ်ဆေးခြင်း — a doctrinal, propositional test, never an intuitive/trance-based discernment as practiced through consulting a nat-medium (nat-kadaw).
1 John 4:2–3The confessional test: Jesus Christ come in the fleshbelievers; false spiritsIsaiah 7:14 (“Immanuel,” God with us, in bodily form); John 1:14See Messianic References and Incarnation entries below; CRITICAL.
1 John 4:4”He who is in you is greater”believers; “he who is in the world”2 Kings 6:16 (“those who are with us are more than those who are with them”); parallel: Romans 8:31 (“If God is for us, who can be against us?”)Reinforces assurance grounded in God’s indwelling presence, not self-generated spiritual power.

Verses 7–21 (Core Passage): the full theological content of this section has already received exhaustive verse-by-verse semantic treatment in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, Part A. The OT/NT cross-references specific to the core passage are consolidated here for completeness:

1 John 4:7–8Love originates in God; “God is love”God; believersDeuteronomy 7:7-8 (God’s love as the unearned cause of the covenant, not Israel’s merit); Exodus 34:6-7 (“the LORD… abounding in steadfast love”)See core doctrine ἀγάπη (Critical); the Deuteronomy 7 pattern is the OT root of “he first loved us” (4:19), directly parallel to grace-priority language in Romans 5:8, 11:5-6.
1 John 4:9God sent his only SonGod the Father; ChristGenesis 22:2 (“your son, your only son, whom you love”); John 3:16 (“God gave his only Son”)TYPOLOGY: Abraham’s willingness to offer Isaac, his only son, is the classical OT type of the Father giving his only Son; see Typology section below. See Rendering-Consistency Rule 5.
1 John 4:10PropitiationChristLeviticus 16 (Day of Atonement); Isaiah 53:5-6; parallel: Romans 3:25CRITICAL. See Rendering-Consistency Rule 1.
1 John 4:12No one has seen GodExodus 33:20 (“you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live”); John 1:18 (“No one has ever seen God”)Direct verbal parallel to John 1:18; reinforces that love for the brethren is the only accessible evidence of the invisible God’s indwelling presence.
1 John 4:14Sent to be Savior of the worldChristIsaiah 49:6 (“salvation… to the end of the earth”); parallel: Romans 10:12-13 (no distinction, universal scope of salvation)See baseline salvation entry (Critical) and universal_scope_of_gospel doctrine (High, Romans baseline).
1 John 4:15Confession: Jesus is the Son of Godbelieversparallel: Romans 10:9 (“Jesus is Lord… you will be saved”)See Rendering-Consistency Rule 3: two distinct but complementary salvation-defining confessions.
1 John 4:16”God is love” repeatedGodSee 4:8 aboveMust render identically to 4:8 per theological-consistency mandate.
1 John 4:17Confidence for the day of judgmentbelieversMalachi 3:2, 4:5 (“the great and terrible day of the LORD”); Daniel 7:9-10 (the judgment scene)See assurance_of_salvation doctrine (baseline, High) and Rendering-Consistency Rule 3.
1 John 4:18Perfect love casts out fearbelieversIsaiah 41:10 (“fear not, for I am with you”); parallel: Romans 8:15 (“you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear”)Direct thematic parallel to Romans 8:15’s contrast between servile fear and adoptive confidence; strengthens the case for teaching 1 John 3:1/4:18 and Romans 8:15 together.
1 John 4:19”We love because he first loved us”God; believersDeuteronomy 7:7-8; parallel: Romans 5:8 (“God shows his love for us in that… Christ died for us”)See Rendering-Consistency note on grace-priority; ရှေးဦးစွာ (first) carries the entire weight of this argument.
1 John 4:20–21Love for the visible brother as proof of love for the invisible GodbelieversLeviticus 19:18; parallel: Romans 13:8-10See Rendering-Consistency Rule 6.

Chapter 5 (1 John 5:1–21)

PassageThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
1 John 5:1Believing Jesus is the Christ; born of GodbelieversPsalm 2:7 (“You are my Son… today I have begotten you”); 2 Samuel 7:12-14 (Davidic covenant, sonship language)See Messianic References below; also parallel: Romans 1:3-4 (seed of David, declared Son of God by the resurrection) — both letters ground Christ’s Sonship in the Davidic covenant promise.
1 John 5:4–5Overcoming the world by faithbelieversJoshua 1:9 (covenant confidence granted by God’s presence, typological pattern of victory not self-generated); parallel: Romans 8:37 (“more than conquerors through him who loved us”)See Rendering-Consistency Rule 7.
1 John 5:6–8Water, blood, and Spirit bear witnessChristExodus 12:13, 12:22-23 (Passover blood on the doorposts); Ezekiel 36:25 (“I will sprinkle clean water on you”); John 19:34 (blood and water from Christ’s side)ရေ၊ အသွေးတော်၊ ဝိညာဉ်တော် — an interpretively debated triad; component terms retain baseline risk levels (blood: Medium; Spirit: Critical).
1 John 5:9–10God’s own testimony about the SonGod; believersDeuteronomy 19:15 (two or three witnesses establish a matter — legal testimony pattern); John 5:31-37 (the Father’s testimony to the Son)သက်သေခံချက် (testimony) must retain the weight of formal, legal, divine testimony, greater than any human witness.
1 John 5:11–13Eternal life given in the Son; assuranceGod; believersDeuteronomy 30:19-20 (“choose life”); parallel: Romans 6:23, 8:38-39CRITICAL — ζωὴ αἰώνιος; see below and Chapter 1 note.
1 John 5:14–15Confidence in prayer according to God’s willbelievers1 Kings 8:28-30 (Solomon’s prayer of confident petition); parallel: Romans 8:26-27 (the Spirit’s intercession according to God’s will)Parallels the baseline’s prayer_and_intercession doctrine (Medium, Romans); direct access to a personal God, not petition mediated through the 37 nats.
1 John 5:16–17Sin unto death / not unto deathbelieversNumbers 15:30-31 (presumptuous, unrepented sin “cut off”); 1 Samuel 2:25 (sin for which there is no intercession)သေခြင်းသို့ ဆိုက်စေသောအပြစ် — “death” here is spiritual/eternal separation, never literal death or an inferior rebirth-destiny.
1 John 5:18–19Kept safe from the evil one; the whole world under his powerbelievers; the devilGenesis 3:1-5, 3:15 (the serpent’s dominion and its promised undoing); Job 1:6-12 (the Adversary’s limited, permitted scope)မာရ်နတ် / ဆိုးညစ်သူ — a wholly malevolent personal being permanently opposed to God, never an object of appeasement or negotiation, unlike morally ambiguous nats.
1 John 5:20The true God; eternal lifeGod; ChristDeuteronomy 6:4 (“The LORD is one,” the Shema); Jeremiah 10:10 (“the LORD is the true God… the everlasting King”); parallel: Romans 9:5 (“Christ… who is God over all”)စစ်မှန်သော (true) — reinforces exclusivity of ဘုရားသခင်; never one genuine option among several ဘုရား-labeled objects of devotion.
1 John 5:21Keep yourselves from idolsbelieversExodus 20:3-4 (the first and second commandments); Deuteronomy 5:7-8; Psalm 96:5 (“all the gods of the nations are idols”)ရုပ်တု (idols) — requires sensitive pastoral framing given the visual and devotional centrality of Buddha images and nat shrines in Myanmar religious life; exclusive worship belongs to ဘုရားသခင် alone.

Part B — Messianic References (Consolidated)

1 John PassageMessianic ClaimOT Root PromiseBurmese Rendering Note
1 John 2:22Denial that Jesus is “the Christ” is the mark of the liar/antichristPsalm 2:2, 2:7; Daniel 9:25-26ခရစ်တော် (Christ) — the doctrinal weight of messianic_promise (Critical, baseline) applies fully; must never be softened to allow “the Christ” as one title among several religious honorifics.
1 John 4:2–3Confessing “Jesus Christ has come in the flesh” identifies the Spirit of GodIsaiah 7:14; 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic promise fulfilled in incarnate form)See incarnation doctrine (baseline, Critical); the confession is the boundary-marking test throughout the letter.
1 John 5:1”Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God”Psalm 2:7; 2 Samuel 7:12-14Directly parallels Romans 1:3-4’s grounding of Christ’s Sonship in the Davidic covenant (baseline seed_of_david, davidic_covenant doctrines) — both letters require the same OT covenant background teaching for audiences with low OT literacy.
1 John 2:18, 4:3The antichrist as the negation of the MessiahDaniel 7:23-25, 11:36; 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4အန္တီခရစ် — CRITICAL, transliteration retained; never conflated with မိတ္တေယျ (Metteyya, forbidden elsewhere in baseline for “messiah”) or any Burmese folk-eschatological expectation. The antichrist is defined solely by negation of the biblical Christ, not by independent mythological content.

Part C — Typology

Type (OT)Antitype (1 John)PassageNotes
Abraham offering Isaac, his only son (Genesis 22:1-14)The Father sending his only Son (v. μονογενής)1 John 4:9; cf. John 3:16The clearest OT type underlying 4:9. Teaching materials should present Genesis 22 explicitly for audiences with OT narrative literacy, since the typological weight of “only son” (တစ်ပါးတည်းသော) depends on it.
The Day of Atonement sacrifice and the kapporeth/mercy seat (Leviticus 16:11-17)Christ as ἱλασμός, the propitiation (Rendering: အပြစ်ဖြေရာယဇ်)1 John 2:2; 4:10Same typological root as Romans 3:25’s ἱλαστήριον; see Rendering-Consistency Rule 1. God himself provides and receives the atoning sacrifice — the reverse direction of Burmese folk sacrificial offerings made by a human party to a nat.
The Passover lamb’s blood applied for deliverance (Exodus 12:7, 12:13, 12:22-23)The cleansing blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7) and the water-and-blood testimony (1 John 5:6-8)1 John 1:7; 5:6-8Blood as the means of God’s own provided deliverance, not a human offering to appease.
Cain’s rejected work-offering vs. Abel’s accepted faith-offering (Genesis 4:3-5; cf. Hebrews 11:4)The grace/works contrast underlying “love, not as Cain”1 John 3:11-12Structurally parallel to the grace-versus-works argument of Romans 4:1-8 (Abraham credited righteousness by faith, not works) — a valuable cross-curriculum teaching bridge.
The serpent’s deception and the promised crushing of its head (Genesis 3:1-5, 3:15)The devil’s works destroyed by the Son of God (1 John 3:8)1 John 3:8Foundational for teaching the Incarnation and Antichrist doctrine as the fulfillment of the oldest OT conflict-promise.
The Shema’s declaration of God’s uniqueness (Deuteronomy 6:4)“Him who is true,” the one true God, set against idols (1 John 5:20-21)1 John 5:20-21Reinforces exclusive monotheism against both the false teachers’ Christology and, for the Burmese context, against devotional competitors (idols, images) more broadly.

Part E — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations and Parallel Terms

  1. Propitiation (ἱλασμός / ἱλαστήριον). 1 John 2:2 and 4:10 (ἱλασμός) and Romans 3:25 (ἱλαστήριον) both render the same OT sacrificial-atonement reality rooted in Leviticus 16. Both MUST use the Burmese term အပြစ်ဖြေရာယဇ် (or its established morphological family). Do not introduce a second, unrelated Burmese term for either curriculum. This term is Critical risk in both curricula and triggers mandatory theologian review wherever it occurs.

  2. Born of God vs. Adoption (γεννάω ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ / υἱοθεσία). 1 John’s “born of God” (ဘုရားသခင်ထံမှ ဖွားမြင်ခြင်း, organic-birth metaphor) and Romans’ “adoption” (သားအဖြစ်လက်ခံခြင်း, legal-sonship metaphor) describe the same salvific reality — full, permanent membership in God’s family — through two distinct biblical metaphors. Keep the two Burmese terms distinct; do NOT collapse one into the other. Teaching notes accompanying both curricula must explicitly present them as complementary pictures (one emphasizing new nature/life, the other emphasizing legal standing and inheritance), never as competing or contradictory doctrines.

  3. Salvation-defining confessions. Romans 10:9’s ယေရှုသည် သခင်ဖြစ်တော်မူ၏ (“Jesus is Lord”) and 1 John 4:15/5:1’s confession that Jesus is the Son of God/the Christ (ယေရှုသည် ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော် ဖြစ်တော်မူ၏) are distinct but complementary salvation-defining confessions, each drawing on a different baseline Critical doctrine (lordship_of_christ vs. sonship_of_christ / messianic_promise). Both trigger mandatory human theologian review in every occurrence. Cross-curriculum teaching materials must present them as two facets of the one gospel confession, never as alternative or competing formulas, and must render each internally-consistent phrase verbatim wherever it recurs (cf. baseline’s Romans 10:9-10 consistency mandate, extended here to 1 John 4:15 and 5:1).

  4. Universal sinfulness. 1 John 1:8, 1:10 and Romans 3:23 must both render “sin” as အပြစ် (baseline reuse) with identical universality — “all/no one” language must never be softened into a graded merit-scale in either curriculum.

  5. The Father’s giving apart from merit. The Genesis 22 typology underlying 1 John 4:9 (the Father giving his only Son) and the Genesis 15:6/Romans 4:1-8 argument (righteousness credited to Abraham apart from works) share the single grace-priority logic that also grounds the baseline’s Critical grace and imputed_righteousness entries. Teaching materials linking these passages must maintain the same “apart from merit-making” framing used throughout the Romans baseline (see baseline grace notes on ကုသိုလ်).

  6. The love-commandment. 1 John 2:7-8, 3:23, and 4:21’s ပညတ်တော် (a specific relational precept from Christ) and Romans 13:8-10’s citation of Leviticus 19:18 (love fulfilling ပညတ်တရား, the whole Law) must maintain the glossary’s established distinction: ပညတ်တော် (specific commandment, relational) vs. ပညတ်တရား (the Mosaic Law as covenant system). Do not merge the two Burmese terms; cross-reference notes should clarify that love is both a specific command received from Christ (1 John) and the fulfillment/summation of the whole Law (Romans).

  7. Overcoming/victory. 1 John 5:4-5’s အောင်နိုင်ခြင်း and Romans 8:37’s “more than conquerors” (built on the same အောင်နိုင် root) must share the same root morpheme across both curricula, reinforcing that victory in both letters is achieved through faith in Christ’s finished work and God’s love, never through self-generated ascetic or meditative effort over defilements (kilesa).

  8. The indwelling Spirit as evidentiary ground. 1 John 3:24/4:13 and Romans 8:9/8:16 both cite the gift of the Spirit as the ground of assurance of belonging to God. Both MUST use the baseline’s Critical term သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော် (or clearly-referenced ဝိညာဉ်တော် with an unambiguous antecedent); never ဝိညာဉ် alone or နတ်ဝိညာဉ် in either curriculum.

  9. Davidic-covenant grounding of Sonship. 1 John 5:1 and Romans 1:3-4 both ground Christ’s identity as Son/Christ in the Davidic covenant promise (2 Samuel 7:12-14; Psalm 2:7). Both curricula require the same OT background teaching (baseline davidic_covenant, High risk) for audiences with low OT narrative literacy; use ဒါဝိဒ် (baseline reuse) consistently for the proper name.

  10. Testing spiritual claims. 1 John 4:1’s ဝိညာဉ်များကို စစ်ဆေးခြင်း has no direct Romans parallel but shares its OT root (Deuteronomy 13, 18) with the baseline’s prophet/prophecy entries. Use ပရောဖက် (baseline reuse) consistently when referencing “prophets” in either curriculum’s discussion of testing spiritual claims; never ဗေဒင်ဆရာ (astrologer/fortune-teller).

Summary

Every chapter of 1 John (1–5) has been surveyed for OT quotation, allusion, messianic reference, and typology, and cross-referenced against the Romans curriculum already established in this language pipeline. No chapter contributes zero material — even chapter-sections without direct OT citation (e.g., 1 John 2:12-14, 4:4) have been explicitly reviewed and noted as thematic-only. The ten rendering-consistency rules in Part E must be loaded alongside translation_memory.json and doctrine_risk_registry.json before Phase 2 translation of any 1 John segment that touches a shared term or citation with the Romans curriculum.
