Biblical Theme Map
10 Biblical Theme Map — Ephesians 1–6 (English → Burmese)
Purpose
This document maps the theme structure of Ephesians — how its nine designated curriculum doctrines interlock within the letter itself, and how each doctrine connects outward across the whole of Scripture (creation, covenant, prophecy, gospel, church, consummation). It complements 09_cross_reference_analysis.md (which catalogs specific citations) by tracing the larger redemptive-historical arcs each theme belongs to, and by showing where the Romans curriculum already established the Burmese vocabulary that Ephesians now must reuse or extend.
1. The Letter’s Internal Theme Structure
Ephesians moves through a coherent theological arc:
- Chapter 1 — God’s eternal plan (election, predestination, redemption) culminating in Christ’s cosmic supremacy and headship over the church.
- Chapter 2 — That plan applied individually (salvation by grace through faith, 2:1-10) and corporately (Jew-Gentile unity in one new humanity, 2:11-22).
- Chapter 3 — The plan named: “the mystery of Christ” — Gentile inclusion as full co-heirs — and Paul’s commission to disclose it, followed by a prayer for the church’s Spirit-empowered comprehension of Christ’s love.
- Chapter 4 — The plan lived out corporately: unity maintained, gifts exercised, the old self decisively replaced by the new self.
- Chapter 5 — The plan lived out relationally: walking in love and light, and Christ-centered marriage as the supreme picture of the mystery.
- Chapter 6 — The plan lived out in the household and in cosmic conflict: household codes completed, and the whole armor of God for the spiritual battle the letter has been assuming since 2:2 and 1:21.
The letter therefore has a doctrinal spine (chs. 1–3: what God has done and revealed) and a practical outworking (chs. 4–6: how the church now walks) — mirroring, at letter-scale, the doctrine-then-ethics structure of Romans (chs. 1–11 doctrine, chs. 12–16 ethics), a structural parallel worth noting for learners moving between the two curricula.
2. Theme-by-Theme Canonical Connections
2.1 Salvation by Grace through Faith
Ephesians locus: 2:1-10 (core passage), 2:5, 2:8-9.
Canonical arc:
- Creation/Fall: Genesis 2:17, 3:6-19 — death entering through sin, the root of the “dead in trespasses” condition (Ephesians 2:1).
- Patriarchal promise: Genesis 15:6 — righteousness reckoned to Abraham through faith, not works; the seed-text of the entire grace/faith-not-works antithesis.
- Prophetic anticipation: Habakkuk 2:4 — “the righteous shall live by his faith” (quoted Romans 1:17, the Romans curriculum’s thesis verse).
- Gospel fulfillment: Ephesians 2:8-9 restates this antithesis in its most compressed NT form; parallels Romans 3:21-28, Romans 4:1-8, Romans 11:5-6 (already fixed Critical-tier vocabulary in the Romans baseline).
- Ecclesial outworking: Ephesians 2:10 — grace produces good works as fruit, never as root; parallels Romans 6 (dead to sin, alive to God) and James 2:14-26 (faith and works, a distinct NT voice on the same relationship, not in curriculum scope but worth noting for future teaching).
- Consummation: Revelation 21:1-5 — the “new creation” begun in Ephesians 2:10 and 4:24 reaches its final form.
Burmese consistency note: ကျေးဇူးတော် (grace), ယုံကြည်ခြင်း (faith), ကယ်တင်ခြင်း (salvation), ကောင်းမှုအကျင့် (works) must render identically to the Romans baseline at every occurrence; Ephesians 2:8-9 is the letter’s single highest-stakes verse for the Burmese Buddhist-background audience given its direct collision with merit-making (ကုသိုလ်ပြုခြင်း).
2.2 Election and Predestination in Christ
Ephesians locus: 1:4-5, 1:11, 2:10 (“prepared beforehand”).
Canonical arc:
- Patriarchal election: Genesis 12:1-3 — God’s sovereign, unilateral choice of Abraham, prior to any merit on Abraham’s part.
- National election: Deuteronomy 7:6-8 — Israel chosen not for numerical or moral superiority but by God’s love and oath.
- Pre-temporal election: Ephesians 1:4 intensifies this to “before the foundation of the world” — a scope beyond even the OT’s national election.
- Romans parallel: Romans 8:28-30 (the golden chain: foreknew, predestined, called, justified, glorified), Romans 9:11-13 (Jacob/Esau, election apart from works).
- Consummation: Romans 8:30’s “glorified” and Ephesians 1:14’s “guarantee of our inheritance” both point to the same future, secured completion.
Burmese consistency note: ရွေးကောက်ခြင်း (election) and ကြိုတင်ခန့်ထားတော်မူသော (predestined) must both be sharply and repeatedly distinguished from ကံဇာတာ/ကံကြမ္မာ (karma-fixed destiny) — the single most theologically dangerous false-cognate in this doctrine cluster for a Burmese audience, since astrological and karmic determinism are both widely assumed cultural frameworks for “why things happen to a person.”
2.3 The Church as the Body of Christ
Ephesians locus: 1:22-23; 2:21-22; 4:4, 4:12, 4:16; 5:23, 5:30.
Canonical arc:
- Old covenant type: Exodus 25:8, 1 Kings 8:10-13 — God’s dwelling among his people in the tabernacle/temple.
- Prophetic anticipation: Ezekiel 37:26-27 — a future, permanent divine dwelling among a restored people.
- Christological fulfillment: John 1:14, John 2:19-21 — Christ himself as the true temple.
- Ecclesial fulfillment: Ephesians 2:21-22 — the church, Jew and Gentile together, as the Spirit-indwelt temple; 1:22-23, 4:16 — the church as Christ’s body, with Christ as head.
- Romans parallel: Romans 12:4-5 — the briefer “one body” statement Ephesians expands at length.
- Consummation: Revelation 21:3, 21:22 — God’s dwelling fully and finally with his people, no longer needing a temple building because “the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb” are its temple.
Burmese consistency note: အသင်းတော် (church) and ကိုယ်ခန္ဓာ (body) must never evoke ဘုရားကျောင်း/ဘုရားရိပ်သာ (pagoda/monastery); the church-as-temple language in 2:21-22 is the single point of highest collision risk with Burmese Buddhist sacred-space vocabulary and requires explicit teaching that this is the corporate people of God, not a consecrated building.
2.4 Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
Ephesians locus: 2:11-22; 3:6.
Canonical arc:
- Universal scope from the start: Genesis 12:3, 22:18 — “all the families of the earth” blessed through Abraham’s seed; the Gentile-inclusion promise is present from the Abrahamic covenant’s inception, not a NT innovation.
- Prophetic anticipation: Isaiah 49:6 — the Servant as “a light for the nations”; Isaiah 56:6-7 — foreigners welcomed into God’s house of prayer “for all peoples.”
- Historical barrier: the Mosaic law’s ceremonial boundary-markers (circumcision, dietary law) functioned as real, God-ordained but temporary distinctions (Genesis 17:10-14; Leviticus 11).
- Fulfillment: Ephesians 2:14-16 — Christ’s death abolishes the “dividing wall of hostility,” creating “one new man” — recapitulating the Abrahamic universal promise and resolving the Mosaic-era distinction.
- Romans parallel: Romans 3:29-30, Romans 9-11 (esp. 11:17-24, the olive tree), Romans 15:7-12 — the identical doctrine given extensive treatment in the Romans curriculum’s baseline (High risk, “Unity of Jews and Gentiles”).
- Consummation: Revelation 7:9 — “a great multitude… from every nation” worshiping together, the final state of the “one new humanity.”
Burmese consistency note: This doctrine’s real-world edge (as already flagged in the Romans baseline) is its implicit challenge to any assumption that Bamar-Buddhist ethnic-religious identity carries inherent priority over minority ethnic or religious groups within Myanmar. The theological point must be rendered with full clarity, exactly as the Romans baseline already mandates.
2.5 The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Ephesians locus: 1:9; 3:3-9; 5:32; (background) 6:19.
Canonical arc:
- Old Testament partial disclosure: the mystery was “hidden for ages” (Ephesians 3:9) — present in seed form in Genesis 12:3’s universal promise and Isaiah’s nations-texts, but not fully disclosed until the gospel.
- Danielic vocabulary: Daniel 2:28-29, 2:47 — God as the revealer of mysteries, background for Paul’s use of μυστήριον.
- NT disclosure: Ephesians 3:6 defines the mystery precisely — Gentiles as “fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise” with Israel.
- Applied a second time: Ephesians 5:32 — marriage as a living picture (“this mystery is great”) of Christ and the church, drawing the Genesis 2:24 marriage institution and the Hosea marriage-covenant motif into the same “mystery” vocabulary.
- Consummation: Revelation 19:7-9 — the marriage supper of the Lamb, the final unveiling of what the “mystery” of Ephesians 5:32 pictures.
Burmese consistency note: “Mystery” (နက်နဲသောအမှုအရာ/လျှို့ဝှက်ချက်တော်) must be taught as fully and openly revealed to all who believe — the opposite of an esoteric teaching reserved for advanced initiates, monastics, or weizza (occult adept) practitioners in Burmese religious culture.
2.6 Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
Ephesians locus: 1:21; 2:2; 3:10; 6:10-20.
Canonical arc:
- Old Testament background of real spiritual conflict: Job 1-2 (Satan’s limited access before God’s throne); Daniel 10:13, 10:20-21, 12:1 (territorial angelic princes contesting God’s messengers, Michael’s role).
- Messianic armor imagery: Isaiah 11:5 (the Davidic king’s righteousness/faithfulness as belt); Isaiah 59:17 (the LORD’s own righteousness-breastplate and salvation-helmet); Isaiah 52:7 (the herald’s beautiful feet, gospel of peace).
- NT declaration of Christ’s victory: Ephesians 1:20-22 — Christ already seated far above all rule and authority; Colossians 2:15 (other curriculum, future note) — the powers disarmed and put to open shame.
- Present church-age conflict: Ephesians 6:10-20 — believers stand in Christ’s already-secured victory, clothed in armor first ascribed to the LORD/Messiah himself.
- Romans parallel: Romans 13:12 (“armor of light”) — a related but textually distinct image; see
09_cross_reference_analysis.mdRule 6 for the non-conflation requirement. - Consummation: Revelation 20:10 — the final, permanent defeat of the devil, the ultimate resolution of the conflict Ephesians 6 describes as already positionally decided but not yet finally consummated.
Burmese consistency note: This is the doctrine with the highest syncretism surface area in the entire letter, given Burmese folk religion’s populated spirit-world (37 nats, territorial guardian spirits, astrological powers, weizza occult forces). The armor must be taught as protective/defensive equipment for an already-decided conflict under Christ’s supremacy, never as magical protection comparable to amulets, tattoos, or spirit-appeasement — and the enemy named in 6:12 must be taught as the same personal, defeated-but-active Satan of 2:2, continuous with the Job/Daniel portrayal, not a symbolic personification or a member of a negotiable pantheon.
2.7 Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
Ephesians locus: 5:21-33 (marriage); 6:1-4 (parent-child); 6:5-9 (master-servant).
Canonical arc:
- Creation ordinance: Genesis 2:18-24 — marriage instituted before the Fall, the root text quoted directly in Ephesians 5:31.
- Covenant-marriage motif: Hosea 1-3, Isaiah 54:5, Isaiah 62:5 — the LORD as Israel’s covenant husband, the OT background Ephesians 5:25-32 draws on to describe Christ and the church.
- Torah household ethics: Exodus 20:12/Deuteronomy 5:16 (honor parents, quoted directly Ephesians 6:2-3); Leviticus 25:39-43 (bondservant protections, background for 6:5-9’s relativizing of absolute mastery claims).
- NT reframing: every relationship in Ephesians 5:21-6:9 is re-grounded “in the Lord” or “as to Christ,” transforming inherited household structures from the inside rather than abolishing them outright.
- Consummation: Revelation 19:7-9 — marriage’s ultimate referent (Christ and his church) fully realized.
Burmese consistency note: Burmese filial-piety norms and existing patriarchal household structures give this doctrine strong surface-level cultural resonance, which creates risk of the Christ-centering qualifier (“in the Lord,” “as to Christ”) being silently dropped in favor of a generic culturally-familiar hierarchy; every occurrence must retain the explicit Christ-referent.
2.8 Gifts for Building Up the Church
Ephesians locus: 4:7-16.
Canonical arc:
- OT pattern of Spirit-empowered service: Exodus 31:1-6 (Bezalel and Oholiab, Spirit-given craftsmanship for tabernacle construction) — an OT type of Spirit-given, task-specific enablement for building God’s dwelling place, paralleling the NT gift-offices’ purpose of “building up the body of Christ.”
- Messianic gift-giving: Psalm 68:18 (quoted directly Ephesians 4:8) — the ascended, victorious king distributing gifts to his people.
- Romans parallel: Romans 12:6-8 — an earlier, shorter list of spiritual gifts using the already-fixed Romans baseline term ဝိညာဉ်ဆုကျေးဇူး.
- Goal: Ephesians 4:13 — corporate maturity measured by “the fullness of Christ,” not individual attainment.
- Consummation: Revelation 21:24-26 — the nations’ full contribution to the New Jerusalem, a final image of every gift finding its ultimate purpose.
Burmese consistency note: Gift-based ministry must remain Spirit-given and Christ-apportioned, never differing merit-levels among believers nor occult/weizza-style acquired powers.
2.9 Walking in Newness of Life
Ephesians locus: 2:2, 2:10; 4:1, 4:17-24; 5:2, 5:8, 5:15.
Canonical arc:
- Old self rooted in the Fall: Genesis 3 — humanity’s corrupted “old” nature, the ultimate referent behind Ephesians 4:22’s “old self.”
- New creation typology: Genesis 1:26-27 — humanity made in God’s image, echoed in Ephesians 4:24’s “new self, created after the likeness of God.”
- Prophetic anticipation: Ezekiel 36:26-27 — a new heart and God’s Spirit put within, causing God’s people to “walk in my statutes” — the direct OT seed of the NT “walk” motif.
- Romans parallel: Romans 6:1-11 (dead to sin, alive to God, union with Christ in his death/resurrection), Romans 8:4 (walking according to the Spirit), Romans 12:2 (renewal of the mind) — extensively parallel vocabulary already fixed in the Romans baseline.
- Consummation: Revelation 21:5 — “Behold, I am making all things new,” the final cosmic fulfillment of the “new self” begun in each believer.
Burmese consistency note: The decisive, once-for-all nature of the old-self/new-self change (grounded in union with Christ) must not be softened into a gradual, self-directed moral-improvement project resembling Buddhist mind-purification through meditation and precept-keeping; “walk” (ကျင့်နေခြင်း) names the lived-out FRUIT of an already-accomplished new creation, not the MEANS of achieving it — mirroring exactly the grace/works causal-direction rule established for 2:8-10.
3. Cross-Doctrine Convergence Points
Several places in Ephesians deliberately braid two or more of the nine curriculum doctrines into a single textual unit. These convergence points deserve special teaching attention because a translation choice made for one doctrine will inevitably affect the others in the same verse:
| Convergence Point | Doctrines Joined | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 2:1-10 | Salvation by Grace through Faith + Walking in Newness of Life | The “good works” causal-direction rule (fruit, not root) links these two doctrines at their most sensitive point. |
| Ephesians 2:11-22 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles + The Church as the Body of Christ + The Mystery of Christ Revealed | The “one new man,” “dividing wall,” and “holy temple” images are three faces of a single reconciling act. |
| Ephesians 3:1-13 | The Mystery of Christ Revealed + Election and Predestination in Christ | The mystery is itself the content of God’s eternal, predestined plan (3:11, “according to the eternal purpose”). |
| Ephesians 4:1-16 | The Church as the Body of Christ + Gifts for Building Up the Church + Election and Predestination in Christ | The “calling” of 4:1 (ခေါ်တော်မူခြင်း) links directly back to the election language of chapter 1. |
| Ephesians 4:17-24 | Walking in Newness of Life + Unity of Jews and Gentiles | The “new self” recapitulates the “one new man” of 2:15 at the individual level. |
| Ephesians 5:22-33 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships + The Mystery of Christ Revealed + The Church as the Body of Christ | Marriage, the church-as-body, and the mystery converge in a single extended metaphor. |
| Ephesians 6:10-20 | Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God + (embedded) Salvation by Grace through Faith | The armor pieces embed the Critical-tier terms righteousness, faith, salvation, and the Spirit/word inside a warfare metaphor; none of these embedded terms may be swapped for a lower-risk synonym even inside the vivid imagery. |

5. Coverage Confirmation
All nine curriculum doctrines have been traced across their full canonical arc (creation/fall, patriarchal promise, prophetic anticipation, gospel fulfillment, ecclesial outworking, consummation) and cross-linked to their Romans curriculum parallel where one exists. Every chapter of Ephesians (1–6) contributes to at least one theme arc mapped above; no chapter is without doctrinal load-bearing content in this theme structure.
