Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — 2 Thessalonians (Full Book) | English → Burmese

Purpose and Method

This document performs Step 1 of the TRI Phase 1 pipeline for 2 Thessalonians. It analyzes the original Koine Greek of the entire epistle, chapter by chapter, with verse-by-verse treatment of the core passage (2:1-12). Every load-bearing theological term is documented with: original Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English gloss variants, contextual theological meaning in 2 Thessalonians, and the Burmese destination-language rendering with risk assessment.

Governing rule: Any term already established in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json (θεός, κύριος, Ἰησοῦς, Χριστός-family terms, χάρις, εἰρήνη, πίστις, ἐκκλησία, ἅγιος/ἅγιοι, δόξα, κλῆσις/καλέω, σωτηρία/σῴζω, ἁγιασμός, εὐαγγέλιον, εὐχαριστία, παρακαλέω, πατήρ, δύναμις [of God], βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ) is reused exactly as recorded in the baseline package. This document does not re-derive those renderings; it only notes new contextual nuances where 2 Thessalonians’ usage adds risk (e.g., δύναμις applied to Satan in 2:9).

New terms unique to, or newly load-bearing in, 2 Thessalonians are analyzed in full and carried forward into 08_core_glossary.md for eventual promotion into an extended translation memory.

PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12

2 Thessalonians 2:1

Greek: Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, ὑπὲρ τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἡμῶν ἐπισυναγωγῆς ἐπ’ αὐτόν,

  • παρουσία (parousia) — Literal meaning: “presence, arrival, coming.” Semantic range: a ruler’s official state visit/arrival (common in Hellenistic usage); Christ’s future bodily return in glory. English variants: “coming,” “advent,” “arrival.” Contextual theological meaning: names the entire eschatological event that anchors the Day of the Lord doctrine — Christ’s visible, personal, historical return. Burmese rendering: ကြွလာတော်မူခြင်း (kywa-la-taw-mu-chin). Risk: Critical. Must not be rendered with cyclical-return or repeated-descent language; must be clearly distinguished from the Theravada expectation of Metteyya’s future arrival (already flagged in the baseline for “messiah”), since both involve “a promised future figure who will come.” Requires an explicit translator note in every occurrence.
  • κύριος (kyrios) — reuse baseline: သခင် (Critical). Contextual note: “our Lord Jesus Christ” ties the parousia directly to Christ’s exclusive lordship, not a generic future deliverer.
  • ἐπισυναγωγή (episynagōgē) — Literal meaning: “a gathering together, assembling to.” Semantic range: the future gathering of believers to Christ at his coming (cf. Matt 24:31; Heb 10:25 for the ordinary sense). English variants: “gathering,” “assembling.” Contextual theological meaning: the reunion of the church with Christ at the parousia, the positive counterpart of the Day of the Lord for believers. Burmese rendering: စုရုံးစည်းလုံးခြင်း (su-yon si-lon-chin). Risk: Medium. Distinguish from ordinary congregational assembly language (already covered by “church” in baseline); this is specifically the end-times gathering to Christ.

2 Thessalonians 2:2

Greek: εἰς τὸ μὴ ταχέως σαλευθῆναι ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ νοὸς μηδὲ θροεῖσθαι, μήτε διὰ πνεύματος μήτε διὰ λόγου μήτε δι’ ἐπιστολῆς ὡς δι’ ἡμῶν, ὡς ὅτι ἐνέστηκεν ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου.

  • σαλεύω (saleuō) — Literal: “to shake, be tossed like a wave.” Semantic range: literal shaking (of a boat, a foundation) or figurative destabilization of the mind. English variants: “shaken,” “unsettled,” “disturbed.” Contextual meaning: Paul’s concern that false eschatological teaching would destabilize believers’ settled convictions. Burmese rendering: စိတ်နှလုံးလှုပ်ရှားခြင်း (seik-hnaloun hlu-shar-chin). Risk: Low.
  • θροέω (throeō) — Literal: “to be alarmed, thrown into confusion/terror.” Semantic range: emotional agitation, especially at ominous news (cf. Mark 13:7). English variants: “alarmed,” “troubled,” “frightened.” Burmese rendering: စိတ်ပျက်လက်ပျက်ဖြစ်ခြင်း / ထိတ်လန့်ခြင်း (htate-lan-chin). Risk: Low.
  • ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου (hēmera tou kyriou) — Literal: “day of the Lord.” Semantic range: OT prophetic Day of YHWH’s judgment and vindication (Joel, Amos, Isaiah), applied in the NT to Christ’s return in judgment and salvation. English variants: “Day of the Lord,” “that Day.” Contextual theological meaning: the central term of the entire doctrine block (2:1-12) — a fixed, future, historical day of divine reckoning, not yet arrived (contra the false teaching Paul corrects). Burmese rendering: သခင်ဘုရား၏နေ့ရက်တော် (Thakhin Bhayar i nayet-taw). Risk: Critical. Must not be assimilated into Burmese astrological “day-reckoning” categories (auspicious/inauspicious days determined by ဗေဒင်), nor into a vague sense of “the end of an era” resembling the decline of the Buddha’s Sasana before Metteyya’s coming. Requires explicit teaching that this is one specific, God-appointed, unrepeatable day of personal judgment by a personal Lord.
  • πνεῦμα (pneuma, here = a claimed prophetic utterance) — reuse baseline stem awareness (holy_spirit uses this root) but here in a different, non-technical sense: “a spirit/spiritual utterance” claimed as source of the false teaching. Risk: Medium — translators must not render this occurrence as သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော် (the Holy Spirit); it refers to an unverified claimed spiritual message, possibly counterfeit. Render as “ဝိညာဉ်ဆိုင်ရာစကား” (a purported spiritual message) with a note that this is NOT a reference to the Holy Spirit’s genuine speech.

2 Thessalonians 2:3

Greek: μή τις ὑμᾶς ἐξαπατήσῃ κατὰ μηδένα τρόπον· ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ ἔλθῃ ἡ ἀποστασία πρῶτον καὶ ἀποκαλυφθῇ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας, ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας,

  • ἐξαπατάω (exapataō) — Literal: “to deceive thoroughly, lead completely astray.” Semantic range: intensified form of ἀπατάω, total deception. Burmese rendering: လှည့်ဖျားလှည့်ဖြားခြင်း (hlwe-hpyar-chin). Risk: Low-Medium.
  • ἀποστασία (apostasia) — Literal: “a standing away from, a defection, rebellion.” Semantic range: political revolt; religious defection/apostasy from the true faith. English variants: “rebellion,” “falling away,” “apostasy.” Contextual theological meaning: a foretold large-scale religious rebellion against God that must precede the revealing of the man of lawlessness. Burmese rendering: ဖောက်ပြန်ငြင်းပယ်ခြင်း (bauk-pyan nyin-pai-chin). Risk: High. Must be taught as a specific end-times falling-away from the true faith in Christ, not a general moral decline or the natural doctrinal “decline of the Sasana” narrative familiar from Burmese Buddhist eschatology (in which the Buddha’s teaching is expected to gradually fade before Metteyya’s arrival) — the two must be sharply distinguished even though they share a “decline before a coming one” shape.
  • ἀποκαλύπτω (apokalyptō) — Literal: “to uncover, reveal.” Semantic range: unveiling something previously hidden. English variants: “revealed,” “unveiled,” “disclosed.” Burmese rendering: ဖွင့်ပြတော်မူခြင်း / ထင်ရှားစွာပြတော်မူခြင်း (htin-shar-zwa pya-taw-mu-chin). Risk: Medium.
  • ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας (anthrōpos tēs anomias) — Literal: “the man of lawlessness.” Semantic range: a Hebraic genitive-of-quality idiom, “the man characterized utterly by lawlessness.” English variants: “man of lawlessness,” “man of sin” (some MSS ἁμαρτίας). Contextual theological meaning: the core figure of the doctrine “The Man of Lawlessness” — a single future individual embodying total rebellion against God’s law, precursor to the Day of the Lord. Burmese rendering: ပညတ်တော်မဲ့ခြင်း၏လူ (pyinnat-taw meh-chin i lu). Risk: Critical. Built from the baseline’s established ပညတ်တရား (law/nomos). Rejected alternatives: ဓမ္မမဲ့သူ (“dhamma-less person”) — rejected because ဓမ္မ names the Buddha’s own teaching in ordinary Burmese usage, and this rendering would suggest a generic irreligious figure or a rejecter of Buddhist dhamma rather than the specific eschatological rebel against the one true God’s revealed moral law. Requires a mandatory translator note on every occurrence.
  • υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας (huios tēs apōleias) — Literal: “son of destruction/perdition.” Semantic range: same Hebraic idiom as above, “one utterly destined for/characterized by destruction” (cf. John 17:12 of Judas). English variants: “son of perdition,” “son of destruction.” Contextual theological meaning: underscores that this figure’s certain end is destruction under God’s judgment. Burmese rendering: ပျက်စီးခြင်း၏သား (pyet-si-chin i thar). Risk: Critical. Must carry a translator note explaining the Hebrew “son of ___” idiom (a person utterly characterized by/destined for X), so it is not misread as implying literal divine or spiritual parentage — a risk heightened by the structural parallel to the baseline’s ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော် (Son of God).

2 Thessalonians 2:4

Greek: ὁ ἀντικείμενος καὶ ὑπεραιρόμενος ἐπὶ πάντα λεγόμενον θεὸν ἢ σέβασμα, ὥστε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ θεοῦ καθίσαι, ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἔστιν θεός.

  • ἀντικείμενος (antikeimenos) — Literal: “the one lying/set against, the opponent.” Semantic range: adversary, opponent (used elsewhere of Satan, 1 Tim 5:14). Burmese rendering: ဆန့်ကျင်ဘက်ပြုသူ (hsan-kyin-bet pyu-thu). Risk: Medium.
  • ὑπεραίρομαι (hyperairomai) — Literal: “to lift oneself up over/above, to exalt oneself excessively.” Burmese rendering: မိမိကိုယ်ကို အလွန်အမင်းမြှောက်ပင့်ခြင်း (a-lwun a-min myauk-pin-chin). Risk: Medium. Theme of self-deification, the diametrical opposite of Christ’s humility.
  • σέβασμα (sebasma) — Literal: “an object of worship/veneration.” Semantic range: any venerated object, image, or shrine. English variants: “object of worship,” “that which is worshiped.” Burmese rendering: ကိုးကွယ်ရာအရာ (ko-kwe-yar a-yar). Risk: High. Burmese religious life contains many legitimate-seeming σέβασμα-class objects (Buddha images, pagoda relics, nat shrines); this term must be taught as naming the totality of every rival object of worship the lawless one usurps and supplants, reinforcing that worship belongs to God alone (cf. baseline note on κύριος/lord).
  • ναός τοῦ θεοῦ (naos tou theou) — Literal: “temple/sanctuary of God.” Semantic range: the inner sanctuary building (distinct from the wider temple courts, ἱερόν); in NT usage also figuratively the church or the believer’s body. English variants: “temple of God,” “sanctuary.” Contextual theological meaning: the lawless one’s ultimate blasphemy — enthroning himself in God’s own dwelling place and claiming deity. Burmese rendering: ဘုရားသခင်၏ဗိမာန်တော် (Phayarthakhin i beiman-taw). Risk: High. Note: ဗိမာန်တော် must not be confused with ဘုရားကျောင်း/ဘုရားရိပ်သာ (the pagoda/monastic compound terms already rejected in the baseline for “church”). Requires a translator note that this refers to the biblical sanctuary concept — either the historical Jerusalem temple typology or the church as God’s dwelling — never a Buddhist sacred site.
  • ἀποδείκνυμι (apodeiknymi) — Literal: “to demonstrate, exhibit, proclaim publicly.” Burmese rendering: ကြေညာပြသခြင်း (kyi-nya pya-tha-chin). Risk: Low-Medium.

2 Thessalonians 2:5

Greek: Οὐ μνημονεύετε ὅτι ἔτι ὢν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ταῦτα ἔλεγον ὑμῖν;

  • μνημονεύω (mnēmoneuō) — Literal: “to remember, call to mind.” Burmese rendering: မှတ်မိခြင်း (hmat-mi-chin). Risk: Low. No doctrinal collision; standard vocabulary.

2 Thessalonians 2:6

Greek: καὶ νῦν τὸ κατέχον οἴδατε, εἰς τὸ ἀποκαλυφθῆναι αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἑαυτοῦ καιρῷ.

  • τὸ κατέχον (to katechon) — Literal: “the restraining thing” (neuter present participle of κατέχω, “to hold back, hold fast, restrain”). Semantic range: a restraining force/power (neuter here; masculine ὁ κατέχων in v.7 — a long-debated shift). English variants: “what restrains,” “the restraining power.” Contextual theological meaning: an as-yet-unidentified restraining force delaying the revealing of the lawless one until God’s appointed time. Burmese rendering: ဆီးတားနေသည့်အရာ (si-tar-ne-thi a-yar). Risk: High. Preserve the ambiguity of identity (the text itself does not name it); do not resolve the theological debate in translation by over-specifying an identity not stated in the Greek.
  • καιρός (kairos) — Literal: “appointed/opportune time” (distinct from χρόνος, mere clock-time). Semantic range: a fitting, divinely determined season. Burmese rendering: သင့်လျော်သောအချိန်ကာလ (thin-lyaw-thaw a-chein-kalar) — reinforces that God, not chance, fixes the moment. Risk: Medium. Must not be conflated with astrologically favorable timing (ကာလကောင်း) determined by ဗေဒင်.

2 Thessalonians 2:7

Greek: τὸ γὰρ μυστήριον ἤδη ἐνεργεῖται τῆς ἀνομίας· μόνον ὁ κατέχων ἄρτι ἕως ἐκ μέσου γένηται.

  • μυστήριον (mystērion) — Literal: “a mystery, secret.” Semantic range: in Paul, not a puzzle to be solved by human speculation but a divine reality now disclosed by revelation (contrast with Greco-Roman mystery-cult usage). English variants: “mystery,” “secret.” Contextual theological meaning: “the mystery of lawlessness” — the hidden, already-operating force of rebellion that will one day be fully unveiled in the man of lawlessness. Burmese rendering: နက်နဲသောအရာတော် (nak-nell-thaw a-yar-taw). Risk: Medium-High. Must be distinguished from the esoteric occult “secret knowledge” pursued in Burmese weizza (esoteric adept) practice, already flagged in the baseline note on spiritual gifts (အနုဘော်တန်ခိုး) as a folk-supernatural risk category; here the “mystery” is evil already active in history under God’s sovereign timetable, not hidden power to be acquired.
  • ἐνεργέω (energeō) — Literal: “to work, be operative, be effectively at work.” Burmese rendering: တက်ကြွစွာ ဆောင်ရွက်လျက်ရှိခြင်း (tet-kywar-zwa saung-ywet-lyet-shi-chin). Risk: Low-Medium.
  • ὁ κατέχων (ho katechōn) — masculine form of the restrainer (cf. v.6). Same rendering/risk as above; note the grammatical shift from neuter (thing/force) to masculine (person) is a genuine feature of the Greek that should be preserved rather than flattened in Burmese if the target syntax allows.

2 Thessalonians 2:8

Greek: καὶ τότε ἀποκαλυφθήσεται ὁ ἄνομος, ὃν ὁ κύριος [Ἰησοῦς] ἀνελεῖ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ καταργήσει τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ,

  • ὁ ἄνομος (ho anomos) — Literal: “the lawless one” (adjective used substantivally, parallel title to “man of lawlessness” in v.3). Burmese rendering: ပညတ်တော်မဲ့သူ (pyinnat-taw-meh thu). Risk: Critical. Same forbidden-substitution logic as ἀνομία above; must remain visibly parallel in Burmese to “man of lawlessness” so readers recognize the same figure.
  • ἀναιρέω (anaireō) — Literal: “to take away, do away with, kill.” Burmese rendering: သတ်ဖျက်တော်မူခြင်း (that-hpyet-taw-mu-chin). Risk: Medium.
  • πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ (pneuma tou stomatos autou) — Literal: “the breath/spirit of his mouth.” Semantic range: echoes Isaiah 11:4 — the Messiah’s spoken word as an instrument of judgment. English variants: “breath of his mouth,” “word of his mouth.” Burmese rendering: နှုတ်တော်မှထွက်သောအသက်ရှူသံ (hnoke-taw hma htwet-thaw a-thet-shu-than). Risk: Medium. Note: this is the sovereign, effortless power of Christ’s spoken word, categorically distinct from folk-Buddhist practices of ritually “blowing” (မှုတ်တံ) blessed breath by monks or spirit-mediums for protective/magical effect; a translator note is recommended.
  • καταργέω (katargeō) — Literal: “to render idle/ineffective, abolish, bring to nothing.” Burmese rendering: ပယ်ရှားဖျက်သိမ်းတော်မူခြင်း (pae-shar hpyet-thein-taw-mu-chin). Risk: High. This is a decisive, once-for-all judicial act of Christ’s return, not a gradual weakening through accumulated karmic cause-and-effect.
  • ἐπιφάνεια τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ (epiphaneia tēs parousias autou) — Literal: “the manifestation/appearing of his coming.” ἐπιφάνεια: a visible, glorious appearing (used of Christ’s return in the Pastorals). Burmese rendering: ထင်ရှားစွာ ကြွလာတော်မူခြင်း (htin-shar-zwa kywa-la-taw-mu-chin). Risk: Critical, as a direct compound with παρουσία above; same forbidden-substitution guardrails apply.

2 Thessalonians 2:9

Greek: οὗ ἐστιν ἡ παρουσία κατ’ ἐνέργειαν τοῦ σατανᾶ ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους

  • σατανᾶς (satanas) — Literal/proper name: “Satan, the Adversary” (from Hebrew śāṭān). Burmese rendering: စာတန် (Satan, transliterated). Risk: Critical. MUST NOT be rendered as မာရ်နတ် (Mara) — the tempter-deity of Buddhist cosmology who assailed the Buddha under the Bodhi tree — as this would import an entire pre-existing non-biblical narrative and character identity onto the biblical Adversary. Follow the proper-name transliteration convention already used for Jesus, Christ, David, Israel.
  • δύναμις (dynamis) — reuse baseline concept (power_of_god) but here applied to Satan’s counterfeit power. Risk: High as a NEW contextual flag on a baseline term: render as plain “တန်ခိုး” (tankhoe) WITHOUT the honorific “-တော်” suffix reserved for God’s power (ဘုရားသခင်၏တန်ခိုးတော်, per baseline), to avoid sacralizing Satan’s counterfeit displays with divine-honorific grammar.
  • σημεῖον (sēmeion) — Literal: “sign.” Semantic range: a miraculous or symbolic act pointing beyond itself; here counterfeit, deceptive signs. Burmese rendering: နိမိတ်လက္ခဏာ (neimit lekkhana). Risk: Medium-High. နိမိတ် carries strong divinatory/omen-reading connotations in Burmese folk religion (dream/omen interpretation); this actually suits the counterfeit, deceptive character of these signs, but translators must explicitly mark them as false and Satan-empowered, not legitimate.
  • τέρας (teras) — Literal: “wonder, portent.” Burmese rendering: အံ့ဖွယ်အမှုအရာ (an-bwe a-hmu-a-yar). Risk: Medium, paired with σημεῖον above.
  • ψεῦδος (pseudos, genitive “of falsehood”) — Literal: “falsehood, a lie.” Burmese rendering: လိမ်လည်မှု / မုသာ (lein-le-hmu). Risk: Medium. Modifies “signs and wonders” — these are not merely impressive but actively deceptive.

2 Thessalonians 2:10

Greek: καὶ ἐν πάσῃ ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις, ἀνθ’ ὧν τὴν ἀγάπην τῆς ἀληθείας οὐκ ἐδέξαντο εἰς τὸ σωθῆναι αὐτούς.

  • ἀπάτη (apatē) — Literal: “deception, deceit.” Burmese rendering: လှည့်စားခြင်း (hlwe-sar-chin). Risk: Medium.
  • ἀδικία (adikia) — Literal: “unrighteousness, injustice” (direct antonym of δικαιοσύνη). Burmese rendering: မတရားမှု (ma-tayar-hmu). Risk: High. Deliberately built as the antonym-pair of the baseline’s ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း (righteousness), reinforcing the righteousness/unrighteousness contrast central to the “God’s Righteous Judgment” doctrine.
  • ἀπολλύμενοι (apollymenoi, present participle of ἀπόλλυμι) — Literal: “those [in the process of] perishing.” Burmese rendering: ပျက်စီးလုနီးသူများ (pyet-si lu-ni thu-myar). Risk: High. This is personal, moral, culpable perishing under a personal God’s judgment — the dark mirror of the baseline’s rejection of နိဗ္ဗာန်ရောက်ခြင်း for salvation — and must not evoke the impersonal dissolution of a self that, in Buddhist anatta teaching, was never truly substantial to begin with.
  • ἀγάπη τῆς ἀληθείας (agapē tēs alētheias) — “the love of the truth.” See ἀγάπη and ἀλήθεια below.
  • ἀγάπη (agapē) — Literal: “love.” Semantic range: self-giving, covenantal, willed love (distinct from ἔρως or φιλία). Burmese rendering: ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ (chit-chin mate-tar). Risk: High. Plain unqualified “မေတ္တာ” risks reducing agape to the Buddhist brahmavihāra practice of mettā — a self-cultivated, meditatively generated loving-kindness extended impartially to all beings as a mental discipline that builds merit. Biblical ἀγάπη here is the willing reception of God’s self-giving love and truth, not a technique of mental cultivation. Every Critical-doctrine occurrence should carry a distinguishing note.
  • ἀλήθεια (alētheia) — Literal: “truth.” Semantic range: that which is real/reliable/in accordance with fact; in John/Paul, the revealed reality of the gospel centered in Christ. Burmese rendering: သမ္မာတရား (thanma taya). Risk: Medium-High. Distinguish from Buddhist “noble/solemn truth” (အရိယာသစ္စာ, e.g. the Four Noble Truths) — a truth about the nature of existence discovered through one’s own insight (vipassana) — versus biblical truth, a revealed, personal, propositional reality about Christ that one receives or refuses, with eternal consequences tied to a personal Judge.
  • σῴζω (sōzō) — reuse baseline: ကယ်တင်ခြင်း (Critical, salvation). No new risk beyond baseline note.

2 Thessalonians 2:11

Greek: καὶ διὰ τοῦτο πέμπει αὐτοῖς ὁ θεὸς ἐνέργειαν πλάνης εἰς τὸ πιστεῦσαι αὐτοὺς τῷ ψεύδει,

  • πέμπω (pempō) — Literal: “to send.” Burmese rendering: ပေးလွှတ်တော်မူခြင်း (pay-hlwut-taw-mu-chin). Risk: Low.
  • ἐνέργεια πλάνης (energeia planēs) — “a working of delusion/error.” πλάνη (planē) — Literal: “a wandering, straying; error, delusion.” Burmese rendering: လှည့်ဖျားမှု (hlwe-hpyar-hmu). Risk: High. Distinguish from Buddhist “moha” (မောဟ), one of the three unwholesome roots (greed, hatred, delusion) understood as an innate psychological/spiritual defilement present in every unenlightened mind. Here πλάνη is a specific, targeted, judicial act — God actively sending delusion upon particular unrepentant people at a specific historical moment as judgment for their prior rejection of truth — not a universal inherent defect requiring self-cultivated insight to overcome. Also, note the theological weight: God’s active judicial role must not be softened into a merely passive “letting them believe.”
  • πιστεύω τῷ ψεύδει (pisteuō tō pseudei) — “to believe the lie.” Note the ironic reuse of the faith-verb πιστεύω (root of the baseline term “faith,” ယုံကြည်ခြင်း) for false belief. Risk: Medium. Translators should ensure the Burmese verb chosen here is recognizably the same root as “faith/believe” elsewhere, preserving Paul’s irony that the faith-capacity itself is misdirected toward falsehood.

2 Thessalonians 2:12

Greek: ἵνα κριθῶσιν πάντες οἱ μὴ πιστεύσαντες τῇ ἀληθείᾳ ἀλλὰ εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ.

  • κρίνω (krinō, passive κριθῶσιν) — Literal: “to judge, decide, condemn.” Burmese rendering: တရားစီရင်ခြင်းခံရမည် (tayar-si-yin-chin khan-ya-mi). Risk: Critical. Direct anchor term for the doctrine “God’s Righteous Judgment”; must retain the sense of a personal Judge issuing a specific, final verdict — not the automatic, impersonal working of ကံ (karma) across the cycle of rebirth.
  • εὐδοκέω (eudokeō) — Literal: “to be well pleased with, take delight in, approve of.” Burmese rendering: နှစ်သက်လိုလားသူ (hnit-thet lo-lar-thu). Risk: Medium. Underscores willful, culpable preference for wickedness — this is not passive ignorance but active delight in ἀδικία.
  • ἀδικία (adikia) — repeated; see 2:10 above. Risk: High.

PART 2 — Whole-Book Chapter-by-Chapter Analysis

Chapter 1 — 2 Thessalonians 1:1-12

Load-bearing terms not already covered above (baseline reuses noted first):

Reused from baseline (no new risk beyond standard baseline notes): θεός (ဘုရားသခင်, Critical), κύριος (သခင်, Critical), Ἰησοῦς (ယေရှု, Critical), χάρις (ကျေးဇူးတော်, Critical), εἰρήνη (ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်း, Medium), πατήρ (အဖ, Critical), ἐκκλησία (အသင်းတော်, Medium), πίστις (ယုံကြည်ခြင်း, Medium), εὐχαριστία/εὐχαριστοῦμεν (ကျေးဇူးတင်ခြင်း, Low), δόξα (ဘုန်းတော်, High), ἅγιος (of his angels/holy — သန့်ရှင်းသော, High), εὐαγγέλιον (သတင်းကောင်း, High), βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ (ဘုရားသခင်၏နိုင်ငံတော်, Medium), κλῆσις/ἀξιόω-context (ခေါ်တော်မူခြင်း, High).

New/newly load-bearing terms:

  • ὑπομονή (hypomonē) — Literal: “a remaining under, endurance.” Semantic range: patient, active endurance under pressure, not passive resignation. English variants: “endurance,” “perseverance,” “patience.” Contextual theological meaning (1:4): believers’ steadfastness under persecution, held up as grounds for Paul’s boasting; anchor term for “Perseverance under Persecution.” Burmese rendering: သည်းခံနိုင်မှု (thi-khan-nain-hmu). Risk: High. Distinguish from equanimity/detachment (upekkhā) cultivated in Buddhist meditation to loosen attachment to outcomes and reduce felt suffering; biblical endurance fully feels the pain of persecution while actively hoping in God’s future vindication and Christ’s return — it is hope-fueled, not detachment-fueled.
  • διωγμός (diōgmos) — Literal: “persecution, pursuit with hostile intent.” Burmese rendering: နှိပ်စက်ညှဉ်းပန်းခြင်း (hnate-set nyin-pan-chin). Risk: Medium.
  • θλῖψις (thlipsis) — Literal: “pressure, affliction, tribulation.” English variants: “affliction,” “tribulation,” “trouble.” Contextual meaning (1:4, 1:6): the specific, circumstantial suffering endured for the gospel. Burmese rendering: ဆင်းရဲဒုက္ခ (hsin-ye dote-kha). Risk: High. ဒုက္ခ (dukkha) is the technical Buddhist term for the First Noble Truth — universal, inescapable suffering inherent in all conditioned existence, transcended only through the Eightfold Path culminating in nirvana. Biblical θλῖψις is specific, temporary, meaningful, persecution-related suffering that produces hope, not an ontological feature of existence to be escaped by detachment. A translator note is recommended at each occurrence, though the everyday non-technical use of ဒုက္ခ for ordinary “hardship” in common Burmese speech somewhat lowers immediate risk of confusion.
  • ἀξιόω (axioō) — Literal: “to consider worthy, deem deserving.” Contextual meaning (1:5): “that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering.” Burmese rendering: ထိုက်တန်သည်ဟု မှတ်တော်မူခြင်း (htite-tan-thi-hto hmat-taw-mu-chin). Risk: High. Must NOT be taught as self-earned merit accumulated through good deeds (ကုသိုလ်, already forbidden for grace/righteousness in the baseline); this worthiness is God’s own gracious reckoning in connection with faithful endurance, consistent with the baseline’s grace-not-merit framework for imputed righteousness.
  • δικαία κρίσις / κρίσις (dikaia krisis) — Literal: “righteous judgment/verdict.” Contextual meaning (1:5): God’s judgment vindicates suffering believers and condemns persecutors — anchor term for “God’s Righteous Judgment.” Burmese rendering: ဖြောင့်မတ်သောတရားစီရင်ခြင်း (pyaungmat-thaw tayar-si-yin-chin). Risk: Critical. Built directly on the baseline’s ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း (righteousness). Distinguish sharply from ကံ (karma), the impersonal cause-and-effect mechanism that operates automatically across rebirths without a personal Judge; this is the personal verdict of a righteous Judge on a specific appointed day.
  • ἀνταποδίδωμι (antapodidōmi) — Literal: “to repay, give back in return.” Contextual meaning (1:6): God repaying affliction to those who afflict the church. Burmese rendering: အစားပြန်ဆပ်တော်မူခြင်း (a-sar-pyan-sat-taw-mu-chin). Risk: Medium. Must be framed as righteous judicial repayment by God, not personal human revenge.
  • ἐκδίκησις (ekdikēsis) — Literal: “vengeance, retributive justice.” Contextual meaning (1:8): God inflicting vengeance/just retribution at Christ’s return. Burmese rendering: လက်စားချေခြင်း (let-sar-chay-chin). Risk: High. Distinguish from both personal vendetta and from impersonal karmic retribution; this is God’s own righteous judicial action against those who reject the gospel.
  • ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος (olethros aiōnios) — Literal: “eternal destruction/ruin.” Contextual meaning (1:9): the punishment of those who do not obey the gospel. Burmese rendering: ထာဝရပျက်စီးခြင်း (hta-wa-ya pyet-si-chin). Risk: Critical. Must not be read through the lens of Buddhist cessation (nirodha/nibbāna) as the desired extinguishing of craving and the peaceful end of rebirth — a positive religious goal in that tradition. Biblical eternal destruction is negative, personal, conscious, everlasting exclusion from God’s presence — a punishment, never a soteriological goal.
  • πρόσωπον τοῦ κυρίου (prosōpon tou kyriou) — Literal: “the face/presence of the Lord.” Contextual meaning (1:9): “shut out from the presence of the Lord” — relational exclusion. Burmese rendering: သခင်ဘုရား၏ မျက်နှာတော်ရှေ့မှ ဝှမ်းသုတ်ခြင်း (context-dependent phrase). Risk: Medium.
  • ἐνδοξάζομαι (endoxazomai) — Literal: “to be glorified in/among.” Built on δόξα (baseline glory term). Contextual meaning (1:10, 1:12): Christ glorified in his saints; believers glorify Christ’s name. Risk: Medium as an extension of the existing High-risk glory term; no new forbidden substitution, but confirm consistent honorific use of ဘုန်းတော် rather than ဘုန်းကံ (merit-power), per baseline note.
  • δύναμις (dynamis, 1:7, 1:11) — reuse baseline power_of_god (ဘုရားသခင်၏တန်ခိုးတော်). Risk: High, standard baseline note applies; contrast this with 2:9’s use for Satan’s counterfeit power (see Part 1 note) to reinforce the honorific/non-honorific distinction across the whole book.

Chapter 2 — 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17 (remainder of chapter; 2:1-12 fully treated in Part 1)

Reused from baseline: ἀγαπημένος (loved — built on ἀγάπη, see High-risk note above), κύριος (သခင်, Critical), θεός (ဘုရားသခင်, Critical), ἐκλογή/αἱρέομαι-context (election — ရွေးကောက်ခြင်း, High), ἁγιασμὸς πνεύματος (sanctification of the Spirit — သန့်ရှင်းခြင်း, High), πίστις ἀληθείας (belief of the truth — ယုံကြည်ခြင်း + သမ္မာတရား, combined risk High), εὐαγγέλιον (သတင်းကောင်း, High), δόξα (ဘုန်းတော်, High), παρακαλέω (comfort/exhort — တိုက်တွန်းနှိုးဆော်ခြင်း, Low), χάρις (ကျေးဇူးတော်, Critical).

New/newly load-bearing terms:

  • αἱρέομαι / εἵλατο (haireomai, “God chose”) — Literal: “to choose, select for oneself.” Contextual meaning (2:13): God’s electing choice of believers “from the beginning” (or “as firstfruits,” textual variant ἀπαρχή), paired with the baseline’s election doctrine. Risk: High, direct extension of baseline ἐκλογή/election term (ရွေးကောက်ခြင်း); reuse baseline note (never ကံဇာတာ/fixed karmic destiny).
  • ἐλπίς ἀγαθή (elpis agathē) — Literal: “good hope.” ἐλπίς (elpis) — Literal: “hope, expectation.” Semantic range: confident forward-looking expectation grounded in a reliable promise (distinct from wishful uncertainty). Burmese rendering: မျှော်လင့်ခြင်း (myaw-lin-chin). Risk: Medium. In Buddhist doctrinal framework, craving or wishing for future states is often analyzed as a form of taṇhā (craving) that perpetuates dukkha and rebirth; Christian hope must be taught positively as confident expectation grounded in God’s unbreakable promise and Christ’s finished work — not something to be suppressed as attachment, but embraced as a fruit of grace.
  • στηρίζω (stērizō) — Literal: “to fix firmly, establish, make stable.” Contextual meaning (2:17, also 3:3): God establishing hearts in every good work and word — anchor term for “Standing Firm in the Traditions.” Burmese rendering: ခိုင်မာစေတော်မူခြင်း (khine-mar-say-taw-mu-chin). Risk: Medium.
  • παράκλησις αἰωνία (paraklēsis aiōnia) — Literal: “eternal comfort/encouragement.” Related to baseline’s παρακαλέω (exhort/comfort) term. Burmese rendering: ထာဝရနှစ်သိမ့်ခြင်း (hta-wa-ya hnit-thein-chin). Risk: Low-Medium.

Chapter 3 — 2 Thessalonians 3:1-18

Reused from baseline: κύριος (သခင်, Critical), πίστις (ယုံကြည်ခြင်း, Medium), εἰρήνη (ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်း, Medium), χάρις (ကျေးဇူးတော်, Critical), παρακαλέω (တိုက်တွန်းနှိုးဆော်ခြင်း, Low), ἀδελφός (brother — standard church-family term, Low).

New/newly load-bearing terms:

  • πιστός (pistos, of the Lord, 3:3) — Literal: “faithful, trustworthy, reliable.” Built on the πίστις root (baseline faith term). Contextual meaning: “the Lord is faithful” — God’s own reliability of character as ground for confidence, contrasted with human unreliability. Burmese rendering: သစ္စာရှိတော်မူသော (thissa-shi-taw-mu-thaw). Risk: Medium. Distinguish from Buddhist notions of faithfulness to vows or to the Triple Gem (an act of the devotee); here it names God’s own unwavering trustworthy character toward his people.
  • ὁ πονηρός (ho ponēros, “the evil one,” 3:3) — Literal: “the evil one” (masculine substantival adjective), a title for Satan parallel to σατανᾶς in 2:9. Burmese rendering: ဆိုးညစ်သူ (soe-nyit-thu) or, where clearly referring to Satan specifically, စာတန် (transliteration, reused from 2:9) with a clarifying note. Risk: High. Avoid မာရ်နတ် (Mara) for the same reasons stated at 2:9.
  • ἄτοπος (atopos, “wicked/perverse men,” 3:2) — Literal: “out of place, improper, perverse.” Burmese rendering: ဆိုးညစ်သူများ (soe-nyit-thu-myar). Risk: Low-Medium.
  • ῥύομαι (rhyomai, “deliver/rescue,” 3:2) — Literal: “to rescue, deliver from danger.” Related in force to the baseline’s salvation vocabulary but a distinct verb for temporal deliverance from hostile people. Burmese rendering: ကယ်ဆယ်တော်မူခြင်း (kae-hsae-taw-mu-chin). Risk: Medium. Keep visibly distinct from the Critical-risk ကယ်တင်ခြင်း (salvation) so readers do not conflate temporal rescue from opposition with eternal salvation, though both share the same “rescue by another” logic already established in the baseline salvation note.
  • παράδοσις (paradosis, 2:15 and 3:6) — Literal: “that which is handed down, tradition.” Semantic range: in Paul, authoritative apostolic teaching (oral or written) transmitted with binding doctrinal weight — sharply distinct from mere ancestral custom (cf. Mark 7:8’s negative use of the same word for merely human tradition). English variants: “tradition,” “teaching,” “instruction.” Contextual theological meaning: anchor term for “Standing Firm in the Traditions” — believers must hold fast to, and separate from anyone who departs from, apostolic teaching. Burmese rendering: လက်ဆင့်ကမ်းသင်ကြားချက် (let-hsin-kan thin-kya-chet). Risk: High. Must be distinguished from ဓလေ့ထုံးတမ်း (customary ritual/folk practice passed down through generations — pagoda festivals, merit-making calendar rites, life-cycle ceremonies), which names optional cultural custom. Here παράδοσις names authoritative apostolic doctrinal instruction carrying Scripture-level authority, to be held with the same seriousness as written Scripture, not treated as an adjustable cultural practice.
  • ἄτακτος / ἀτάκτως (ataktos/ataktōs, 3:6, 3:7, 3:11) — Literal: “out of ranks, disorderly” (military metaphor: a soldier out of formation). English variants: “idle,” “disorderly,” “undisciplined.” Burmese rendering: စည်းကမ်းမလိုက်နာသူ (si-gan ma-laik-nar-thu). Risk: Low-Medium.
  • περιεργάζομαι (periergazomai, 3:11) — Literal: “to work around, busy oneself in others’ affairs.” Burmese rendering: သူတစ်ပါးအမှုစွက်ဖက်သူ (thu-tabar a-hmu swet-phet-thu). Risk: Low.
  • ἐργάζομαι / ἐργασία (ergazomai/ergasia, 3:10, 3:12) — Literal: “to work; work, labor.” Burmese rendering: အလုပ်လုပ်ခြင်း (a-lote lote-chin). Risk: Low.
  • ὑπακούω (hypakouō, 1:8, 3:14) — Literal: “to listen under, obey.” Related in force to the baseline’s ὑπακοὴ πίστεως (obedience of faith) term though used here more generally of obeying the apostolic word/gospel. Burmese rendering: နာခံခြင်း (na-khan-chin). Risk: Medium. Where the context is obedience flowing from and confirming genuine faith, prefer alignment with the baseline’s ယုံကြည်ခြင်း၏နာခံမှု framing rather than a bare compliance sense.
  • ἐχθρός (echthros, 3:15) — Literal: “enemy.” Burmese rendering: ရန်သူ (yan-thu). Risk: Low.
  • νουθετέω (noutheteō, 3:15) — Literal: “to put in mind, admonish, warn.” Burmese rendering: ဆုံးမသတိပေးခြင်း (soun-ma thati-pay-chin). Risk: Low.
  • σημεῖον (sēmeion, 3:17, “the sign of my own handwriting”) — Literal: “sign, mark, token” — same lexical item as 2:9 but a wholly different, non-theological sense (an authenticating mark). Risk: Low. Note the polysemy for translator awareness only; no doctrinal risk in this occurrence.

Coverage Confirmation

All three chapters of 2 Thessalonians have been analyzed: Chapter 1 (thanksgiving, perseverance under persecution, God’s righteous judgment); Chapter 2 (Day of the Lord, Man of Lawlessness — core passage 2:1-12 — plus 2:13-17 election, sanctification, standing firm); Chapter 3 (prayer, the Lord’s faithfulness, standing firm in the traditions, church discipline of the idle). No chapter is without load-bearing theological vocabulary; none is marked “no new terms,” as every chapter of this short epistle contributes to the five assigned doctrines. All terms already present in the baseline Romans translation memory have been reused exactly as recorded; all new terms are carried forward into 08_core_glossary.md.
