Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — James Language Package (Burmese)

Why it matters

James lands its ethical, practical instruction directly on top of Burmese Theravada Buddhism’s most densely populated religious vocabulary — merit (ကုသိုลๆ), self-attained wisdom (ปยาา / paññā), the ten perfections (ปาρมี), the karmic hell-realms (ငρยล), and the wheel of rebirth (สังสาρา). The core passage, James 2:14–26 (“Faith and Works”), sits exactly where a careless Burmese rendering could make Scripture appear to teach salvation by merit — directly undoing the grace doctrine the Romans baseline was built to protect. This package extends that baseline without contradicting it, so Myanmar learners moving between Romans and James encounter one consistent, doctrinally safeguarded voice, not two apparently conflicting ones.

Key findings

  • 28 doctrines analyzed across all 5 chapters of James (doctrine_risk_registry.json): 7 Critical, 14 High, 6 Medium, 1 Low. 21 of 28 doctrines require mandatory human theologian review (75%); 6 require native-speaker review; 1 is automated-only.
  • Glossary term-risk totals (08_core_glossary.md): 9 new Critical-risk terms + 6 inherited Critical-risk terms = 15 Critical-risk terms; 15 new High-risk terms + 4 inherited High-risk terms = 19 High-risk terms. Combined Critical + High = 34 distinct terms requiring mandatory human theologian review in Phase 2.
  • 41 new theological terms are introduced by James with no baseline Romans equivalent; 14 baseline terms are reused unchanged, wired into the James translation memory verbatim.
  • The single highest-stakes decision in the curriculum is ἔργα (“works,” James 2:14–26): rendered အκyin, one word away from ကuσiol (merit), with a mandatory harmonization note required at every justification-word occurrence (2:21, 24, 25) to prevent Scripture from appearing self-contradictory across the Romans/James curriculum boundary.
  • James 3:6 (Gehenna + “wheel of becoming”) is the sharpest single-verse lexical collision identified in either curriculum to date, requiring a dual mandatory translator note to avoid producing a sentence that a Buddhist-background hearer could read as affirming samsaric rebirth.
  • One term (James 4:5’s disputed πνεῦμα) is deliberately left PENDING in translation memory — no default rendering may enter production until a human theologian resolves the Holy-Spirit-vs-human-spirit referent question.

Risks

  • Doctrinal collapse risk (Critical): Unflagged reuse of the baseline forensic-justification phrase in James 2 without the mandatory harmonization note is the single greatest cross-curriculum consistency risk in this pipeline — it could lead learners to conclude the Bible teaches salvation by merit after all.
  • Syncretism risk (Critical, multiple doctrines): Five doctrines have no meaningful cross-tradition bridge with Burmese Buddhism and demand the highest translation vigilance: Wisdom from Above, Hell and Final Judgment, Patience and the Lord’s Return, Perfection and Spiritual Maturity, and Confession and Restoration (04_comparative_theology.md).
  • Pastoral softening risk (High): Real Myanmar status-deference patterns (wealth, ethnic-majority Buddhist identity, monastic rank) create pressure to soften James’s unqualified favoritism prohibition and its exaltation of the poor.
  • Cult/sect contamination risk: Known circulating Jehovah’s Witness, prosperity-gospel, and folk-syncretistic Burmese materials offer ready-made mistranslations (subordinated lordship/parousia, formulaic healing, unqualified merit/wisdom/mercy vocabulary) that must trigger automatic escalation if returned by back-translation (05_translation_landscape.md).
  • Unresolved-ambiguity risk: James 4:5 cannot be safely defaulted; shipping any provisional rendering ahead of theologian resolution would risk asserting a disputed pneumatological claim with false confidence.

Opportunities

  • Genuine cultural bridges exist and should be used pastorally: dana-based generosity toward the poor, right-speech from the Eightfold Path, and craving/tanha’s structural parallel to ἐπιθυμία all give natural entry points for teaching James’s ethics, provided the grace-enabled remedy is kept distinct from self-directed spiritual effort.
  • The baseline’s existing Critical-term discipline (grace, salvation, resurrection, Messiah, Holy Spirit) transfers directly, minimizing new infrastructure: James mostly requires new fencing around existing vocabulary (ปยาา, ကρuน้a, ငρยล, มาρ์นัต) rather than wholesale new coinage.
  • Full-book coverage is already achieved end-to-end (all 5 chapters, 06–11 series) ahead of Phase 2, giving reviewers a complete map rather than a partial one to work from.
  1. Load the James translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json into every Phase 2 worker before any segment translation begins; treat the 34 Critical+High terms as absolute-enforcement, no-deviation vocabulary per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
  2. Route all 21 theologian-required doctrines and every James 2:14–26 justification-word occurrence through mandatory human theologian sign-off before approval; do not allow first-pass auto-approval for any of the 7 Critical doctrines.
  3. Hold James 4:5 (spirit_disputed) in PENDING status until a named theologian records a final referent decision; do not let any downstream document generation proceed past this verse with a placeholder rendering.
  4. Brief all human reviewers on the cult/sect “must not echo” table in 05_translation_landscape.md as a standing escalation trigger for back-translation QA.
  5. Carry the James-specific forbidden-substitution list forward into every future Burmese curriculum sharing this Language Package, exactly as the Messiah/Metteyya and resurrection/rebirth cautions were carried forward from Romans into James.
