Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Ephesians 1–6 (Full Book Coverage)
Purpose
This document executes PRD Phase 1 Steps 4–5: it maps every doctrine identified for the Ephesians curriculum onto the full text of the letter, chapter by chapter, and consolidates them into a single risk-tiered matrix. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json — the same 27 doctrine entries, the same risk tiers, and the same review routing are used throughout. No new doctrines are introduced here and none are downgraded or upgraded relative to the registry. The core passage (Eph 2:1–10) is treated as the theological anchor of the curriculum, not as the boundary of analysis; all six chapters are reviewed in full.
Risk tier definitions (per baseline and registry):
- Critical — Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine. Human theologian review, every occurrence.
- High — Significant theological confusion or syncretism risk. Human theologian review.
- Medium — Reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review.
- Low — Minor misunderstanding risk. Automated review sufficient.
Part A — Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrinal Coverage
Ephesians 1 (1:1–23)
Reviewed in full. Doctrinal content: the letter’s opening doxology (1:3–14) is the single densest doctrinal unit in the curriculum outside the core passage.
| Doctrine (registry key) | Passages in ch.1 | Risk | Chapter-specific note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Election and Predestination in Christ | 1:4–5, 1:11 | Critical | προορίζω occurs twice; pre-creation timeframe (“before the foundation of the world,” 1:4) intensifies syncretism risk with ကံဇာတာ. |
| Adoption into God’s Family | 1:5 | Medium | Predestined sonship through Christ. |
| Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins | 1:7, 1:14 | High | ”Riches of grace” (1:7) — costly redemption by blood, not gradual debt-reduction. |
| Sealing and Guarantee of the Holy Spirit | 1:13–14 | High | First occurrence of the “seal/guarantee” pair; sets up 4:30. |
| Union with Christ | 1:3–14 (“in Christ” x9+) | Critical | The “in Christ” formula saturates this chapter; establishes the pattern intensified in 2:5–6. |
| Resurrection and Present Positional Victory | 1:20–22 | Critical | Christ’s own resurrection and enthronement “far above all rule and authority” — the ground for the believer’s own positional victory in 2:6. |
| Church as the Body of Christ | 1:22–23 | High | First occurrence of ဦးခေါင်း/ကိုယ်ခန္ဓာ pairing and ပြည့်စုံခြင်း (fullness). |
| Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | 1:21 | Critical | First occurrence of the “rulers, authorities, powers” vocabulary later expanded in 3:10 and 6:12. |
| The Mystery of Christ Revealed | 1:9 | High | First occurrence of the “mystery” term, before its full unpacking in ch.3. |
| Holy Spirit’s Personhood and Work | 1:13, 1:17 | Critical | ”Spirit of promise,” “Spirit of wisdom and revelation.” |
| Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ | 1:2–3, 1:17, 1:20–23 | Critical | Establishes Christ’s cosmic supremacy that grounds every later doctrine. |
| The Glory of God as the Goal of Salvation | 1:6, 1:12, 1:14, 1:18 | High | The triple “to the praise of his glory” refrain structures the whole doxology. |
| Thanksgiving and Prayer | 1:16 | Low | Paul’s intercessory prayer report. |
Ephesians 2 (2:1–22) — Core Passage Chapter
Reviewed in full; contains the curriculum’s theological anchor (2:1–10) plus the unity-of-humanity passage (2:11–22).
| Doctrine | Passages in ch.2 | Risk | Chapter-specific note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salvation by Grace through Faith | 2:1–10 (esp. 2:8–9) | Critical | The doctrinal center of the entire curriculum; highest-stakes grace/works antithesis. |
| Grace | 2:5, 2:7, 2:8 | Critical | ”Riches of grace” (2:7) parallels 1:7; must never read as a merit-store. |
| Spiritual Deadness and Total Depravity | 2:1–3 | High | ”Dead in trespasses” — relational incapacity, not a stage in a natural cycle. |
| Divine Wrath Against Sin | 2:3 | Critical | ”Children of wrath by nature” — personal judicial wrath, not impersonal karmic ripening. |
| Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins | 2:4–5 (implied by “rich in mercy”) | High | Continues the redemption theme from ch.1. |
| Union with Christ | 2:5–6, 2:10 | Critical | Intensified compound verbs: made alive, raised, seated together with Christ. |
| Resurrection and Present Positional Victory | 2:6 | Critical | συνεγείρω/συγκαθίζω — present, secure, shared positional victory. |
| Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity | 2:11–22 | High | ”Dividing wall of hostility” torn down; “one new man.” |
| Direct Access to God through Christ | 2:18 | High | Unmediated approach through Christ and one Spirit. |
| Church as God’s Holy Temple and Dwelling Place | 2:21–22 | High | Corporate church as God’s dwelling; must not read as a pagoda/monastery. |
| Walking in Newness of Life | 2:10 | High | ”Created in Christ Jesus for good works” — good works as fruit, never cause (contrast with 2:9). |
| Holy Spirit’s Personhood and Work | 2:18, 2:22 | Critical | Access “by one Spirit”; church built together “in the Spirit.” |
Ephesians 3 (3:1–21)
Reviewed in full. The chapter fully unpacks the “mystery” introduced in 1:9 and closes with a doxology paralleling 1:3–14.
| Doctrine | Passages in ch.3 | Risk | Chapter-specific note |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Mystery of Christ Revealed | 3:3–6, 3:9–10 | High | Gentile co-heirship with Israel now “revealed… to all”; not an esoteric elite teaching. |
| Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity | 3:6 | High | ”Fellow heirs, fellow members, fellow partakers” — Gentiles as full co-heirs. |
| Direct Access to God through Christ | 3:12 | High | ”Boldness and access” continues 2:18. |
| Church as the Body of Christ | 3:6, 3:10 | High | Church as the vehicle through which God’s manifold wisdom is displayed to the powers. |
| Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | 3:10 | Critical | ”Rulers and authorities in the heavenly places” now behold the church’s unity as a revelation. |
| Holy Spirit’s Personhood and Work | 3:5, 3:16 | Critical | Revelation “by the Spirit” (3:5); inner strengthening “through his Spirit” (3:16). |
| The Glory of God as the Goal of Salvation | 3:16, 3:21 | High | ”According to the riches of his glory”; closing doxology — key cross-check point vs. the Romans baseline. |
| Love of God and Christlike Self-Giving Love | 3:17–19 | High | ”Rooted and grounded in love”; breadth/length/height/depth of Christ’s love. |
| Thanksgiving and Prayer | 3:14–19 (prayer report) | Low | Paul’s second intercessory prayer report, addressed to “the Father” (3:14–15). |
| Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ | 3:14–15 (Fatherhood grounding all fatherhood) | Critical | Reinforces the Father/Brahma-risk guardrail from the baseline. |
Ephesians 4 (4:1–32)
Reviewed in full. Turns from doctrine to corporate practice: unity, gifts, maturity, and the old-self/new-self exchange.
| Doctrine | Passages in ch.4 | Risk | Chapter-specific note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Church as the Body of Christ | 4:4, 4:12, 4:16 | High | ”One body,” repeated; the sevenfold “one” creed (4:4–6) intensifies this doctrine numerically. |
| Gifts for Building Up the Church | 4:7–13 | Medium | Christ’s sovereign apportionment of gift-offices (apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher). |
| Corporate Spiritual Maturity in Christ | 4:13–16 | High | Maturity measured corporately against Christ’s fullness, not an individual attainment ladder. |
| Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ | 4:5, 4:13 | Critical | ”One Lord”; “knowledge of the Son of God.” |
| Holy Spirit’s Personhood and Work | 4:3, 4:30 | Critical | ”Unity of the Spirit” (4:3); “grieve the Holy Spirit” (4:30) — the decisive personhood text in the whole letter. |
| Walking in Newness of Life | 4:1, 4:17, 4:22–24 | High | The old-self/new-self exchange is the doctrinal peak of this theme; decisive, not gradual. |
| Sanctification | 4:24 (implied — “created… in true righteousness and holiness”) | High | Anticipates the fuller treatment in 5:26–27. |
Ephesians 5 (5:1–33)
Reviewed in full. Continues the ethical unpacking of “newness of life” into sexual purity, worship, and the first half of the household code.
| Doctrine | Passages in ch.5 | Risk | Chapter-specific note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walking in Newness of Life | 5:1–2, 5:8, 5:15 | High | ”Children of light,” “walk in love,” “walk carefully” — the recurring περιπατέω motif continued from ch.4. |
| Sanctification | 5:26–27 | High | Christ sanctifies and cleanses the church “by the washing of water with the word” — Spirit/word-effected, not ritual bathing. |
| Love of God and Christlike Self-Giving Love | 5:2, 5:25 | High | ”Christ… gave himself”; husbands to love “as Christ loved the church” — the most concentrated agapē passage in the letter. |
| The Mystery of Christ Revealed (marriage form) | 5:31–32 | High | Marriage as a revealed picture of Christ and the church; must retain the same “mystery” term as 1:9/3:3–6. |
| Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | 5:21–33 | High | Mutual submission (5:21) frames wife/husband instruction (5:22–33); headship inseparable from self-sacrifice. |
| Holy Spirit’s Personhood and Work | 5:18 | Critical | ”Be filled with the Spirit” — continual yielding to a personal Spirit, not an induced trance state. |
| The Glory of God as the Goal of Salvation | 5:20 (implied thanksgiving) | Low/High | Thanksgiving “in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” links back to the doxology refrain. |
Ephesians 6 (6:1–24)
Reviewed in full. Completes the household code (children/parents, servants/masters) and closes with the armor of God and the epistolary farewell.
| Doctrine | Passages in ch.6 | Risk | Chapter-specific note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | 6:1–9 | High | Children/parents and bondservants/masters instruction, all grounded “in the Lord”; masters and Master (κύριος) create a unique disambiguation risk. |
| Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ | 6:5–9 | Critical | κύριος used of a human master (6:5,9) alongside the divine Lord — mandatory translator note every occurrence in this passage. |
| Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | 6:10–18 | Critical | The letter’s climactic treatment: “wiles of the devil,” “rulers… authorities… cosmic powers… spiritual forces of evil,” whole armor of God. |
| Salvation by Grace through Faith | 6:17 (“helmet of salvation”) | Critical | Salvation vocabulary embedded in the armor metaphor; must retain the Critical-tier rendering ကယ်တင်ခြင်း. |
| Holy Spirit’s Personhood and Work | 6:17–18 | Critical | ”Sword of the Spirit… word of God”; “praying always in the Spirit.” |
| Thanksgiving and Prayer | 6:18 | Low | ”All prayer and supplication… praying at all times in the Spirit.” |
| Gifts for Building Up the Church (apostolic authority) | 6:19–20 | Medium | ”Ambassador in chains” — Paul’s request for boldness to make the mystery known. |
Full-book coverage confirmation: All six chapters of Ephesians have been reviewed. No chapter was found to contribute zero new doctrinal weight; every chapter is represented above with at least one Critical- or High-tier doctrine attaching to specific verses.
Part B — Consolidated Doctrine Matrix (Full Book, by Curriculum Cluster)
The following table groups the registry’s 27 doctrine entries under the nine curriculum doctrine clusters named in the curriculum parameters, for direct traceability to doctrine_risk_registry.json. Doctrine names, risk tiers, and review routing are reproduced exactly as recorded there.
Cluster 1 — Salvation by Grace through Faith
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salvation by Grace through Faith | 2:1–10, 1:7, 1:13 | Critical | Highest-stakes term-collision with Burmese lay merit-making (ကုသိုလ်ပြုခြင်း); grace/faith and works must be held in strict antithesis. | Human theologian |
| Grace | 1:2,6–7; 2:5,7–8; 3:2,7–8; 4:7; 6:24 | Critical | Never ကုသိုလ်/ကံကောင်းခြင်း; “riches of grace” must never read as a merit-store. | Human theologian |
| Spiritual Deadness and Total Depravity | 2:1–3, 4:17–19 | High | Burmese death-vocabulary carries cyclical impermanence (အနိစ္စ) associations; must convey total relational incapacity, not a natural cyclical stage. | Human theologian |
| Divine Wrath Against Sin | 2:3, 5:6 | Critical | Must be personal, judicial, holy anger — never impersonal karmic ripening or a merit-appeasable displeasure. | Human theologian |
| Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins | 1:7, 1:14 | High | Costly price paid by another, not self-achieved liberation from a cycle; immediate debt-cancellation, not gradual moral-balance reduction. | Human theologian |
Cluster 2 — Election and Predestination in Christ
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Election and Predestination in Christ | 1:4–5, 1:11, 2:10 | Critical | προορίζω must be sharply distinguished from ကံဇာတာ/ကံကြမ္မာ; pre-creation timeframe intensifies risk beyond Romans baseline. | Human theologian |
| Adoption into God’s Family | 1:5 | Medium | Predestined, full, grace-secured sonship, not provisional or merit-earned family status. | Native speaker review |
| Sealing and Guarantee of the Holy Spirit | 1:13–14, 4:30 | High | Secure divine ownership/guarantee, not a magical protective mark comparable to amulet-seals (in-saq); requires Spirit personhood for “grieve.” | Human theologian |
| Union with Christ | 1:3–14, 2:5–6, 2:10 | Critical | Single, shared, once-for-all union with the risen Christ — never a repeatable rebirth cycle nor a merely imitative experience. | Human theologian |
| Resurrection and Present Positional Victory | 1:20–22, 2:6 | Critical | Never ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း; present secure authority over the powers, not gradual merit-based ascent through deva/Brahma realms. | Human theologian |
Cluster 3 — The Church as the Body of Christ
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Church as the Body of Christ | 1:22–23, 2:16, 3:6, 4:4,12,16, 5:23,30 | High | Christ as singular cosmic Head, not a senior elder/abbot-teacher; church filled with his fullness, not a Gnostic emanation hierarchy or merit-attained state. | Human theologian |
| Church as God’s Holy Temple and Dwelling Place | 2:21–22 | High | Must not be confused with a pagoda or monastic compound; corporate people of God as living dwelling by the Spirit. | Human theologian |
| Corporate Spiritual Maturity in Christ | 4:13–16 | High | Maturity measured corporately against Christ’s fullness, not an individual meritorious attainment ladder. | Human theologian |
Cluster 4 — Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity | 2:11–22, 3:6 | High | Dividing wall torn down extends by implication to ethnic/religious barriers a Myanmar audience might import (Bamar-Buddhist majority vs. ethnic-minority Christian communities); “one new man” is a genuinely new humanity, not a merged alliance. | Human theologian |
| Direct Access to God through Christ | 2:18, 3:12 | High | Unmediated approach through Christ/Spirit alone; no nat, monk, or intercessory figure required. | Human theologian |
Cluster 5 — The Mystery of Christ Revealed
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Mystery of Christ Revealed | 1:9, 3:3–6,9–10, 5:32, 6:19 | High | Fully revealed plan for all believers, not an esoteric teaching reserved for an initiated elite (risk of resonance with weizza/monastic-only teaching traditions). | Human theologian |
| Marriage as a Revealed Picture of Christ and the Church | 5:31–32 | High | Must retain the identical “mystery” term used in 1:9/3:4–6 to preserve the thematic link Paul intends. | Human theologian |
Cluster 6 — Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | 1:21, 2:2, 3:10, 6:10–18 | Critical | Sits directly atop Burmese folk cosmology’s dense spirit-world (37 nats, astrological sky-powers, weizza); requires explicit teaching that Satan’s hierarchy is real, personal, and already defeated, and the armor is protective equipment, not magical self-protection. | Human theologian |
Cluster 7 — Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | 5:21–6:9 | High | Every instruction grounded “in the Lord,” not generic patriarchal/Confucian-filial/Buddhist parental-merit norms; headship inseparable from Christ’s self-sacrifice; master/servant instruction must not be read as endorsing caste-like servitude. | Human theologian |
| The Love of God and Christlike Self-Giving Love | 1:4–5, 2:4, 3:17–19, 5:2,25 | High | ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ must be distinguished from Buddhist cultivated မေတ္တာ; agapē here is personal, chosen, covenantal, cross-shaped. | Human theologian |
Cluster 8 — Gifts for Building Up the Church
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gifts for Building Up the Church | 4:7–13 | Medium | Gift-offices sovereignly apportioned by Christ, not differing merit-levels; သိုးထိန်း must not be confused with monastic ဆရာတော်. | Native speaker review |
Cluster 9 — Walking in Newness of Life
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walking in Newness of Life | 2:10, 4:1,17,22–24, 5:1–2,8,15 | High | Decisive, once-for-all identity change in union with Christ, not gradual self-improvement; good works always fruit, never cause. | Human theologian |
| Sanctification | 1:4, 5:26–27 | High | Spirit-and-word-effected transformation, not mechanical ritual purification or self-directed precept discipline. | Human theologian |
Cross-Cutting Doctrines (present across multiple clusters and chapters)
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Holy Spirit’s Personhood and Work | 1:13, 2:18,22, 3:5,16, 4:3,30, 5:18, 6:17–18 | Critical | Never ဝိညာဉ် alone or နတ်ဝိညာဉ်; 4:30 (“grieve the Spirit”) is the decisive personhood text against anatta’s denial of any permanent self/entity. | Human theologian |
| Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ | 1:20–23, 4:5,13, 6:5–9 | Critical | Exclusive, supreme Lordship, never one respected teacher among many; the human-master use of κύριος in 6:5–9 requires a mandatory disambiguating translator note at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| The Glory of God as the Goal of Salvation | 1:6,12,14,18, 3:16,21 | High | God’s own inherent honor freely displayed, never ဘုန်းကံ (earned merit-power); cross-checked against Romans baseline usage. | Human theologian |
| Thanksgiving and Prayer | 1:16, 3:14–19, 5:20, 6:18 | Low | Direct, Spirit-enabled address to God; must not collapse into ritual merit-dedication language or petition to intermediary spirits. | Automated review |
Part C — Risk Tier Cross-Check
This matrix reproduces, without alteration, the doctrine set and risk tiers of assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json. No doctrine listed there is omitted here, and no risk tier has been changed. The chapter-by-chapter section (Part A) demonstrates that every one of the six chapters of Ephesians contributes at least one Critical- or High-tier doctrine occurrence, satisfying the full-book coverage mandate while keeping the core passage (2:1–10) as the anchor around which Clusters 1 and 2 are organized.
This document feeds directly into Phase 1 Step 6 (Linguistic Gap Analysis) and Step 8 (Core Glossary), and underlies the escalation and review-routing rules to be encoded in the Ephesians extension of 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Deity and Exclusive Lordship of Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၏ ဘုရားဇာတိနှင့် ထူးကဲသော အရှင်သခင်ဖြစ်ခြင်း
Key terms: Lord, far above all rule and authority, head over all things, Son of God
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Christ’s exalted, cosmic Lordship (1:20-23) must remain exclusive and supreme, never one respected teacher among the many venerated in Burmese religious life; the letter’s own use of κύριος for a human household master (6:5-9) creates a unique disambiguation risk not present in Romans and requires a mandatory translator note at every occurrence in that passage to prevent the divine title သခင် from being diluted.
Divine Wrath Against Sin
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်၏ အမျက်တော်
Key terms: children of wrath by nature, wrath of God
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: God’s wrath must be presented as the personal, righteous judicial anger of a holy Creator against real moral guilt — never softened into impersonal karmic consequence (ကံ) automatically ripening from past deeds, and never diluted into a displeasure appeasable through merit-making, which would collapse this doctrine back into the very framework grace (2:8-9) excludes.
Election and Predestination in Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၌ ရွေးကောက်ခြင်းနှင့် ကြိုတင်ခန့်ထားခြင်း
Key terms: predestined, election, chosen, adoption, prepared beforehand
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: προορίζω (predestined) occurs twice in ch.1 as the letter’s signature term and must be sharply distinguished from ကံဇာတာ/ကံကြမ္မာ (karma-fixed destiny determined by accumulated past-life action). God’s choice is personal, gracious, and pre-creational — the pre-creation timeframe of 1:4 intensifies the syncretism risk beyond the baseline’s existing Romans caution on election.
Grace
Burmese name: ကျေးဇူးတော်
Key terms: grace, riches of grace, gift, kindness
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Never ကုသိုလ် or ကံကောင်းခြင်း. Grace as unearned favor cuts directly against the daily lay practice of merit accumulation that shapes Burmese Buddhist religious life; Ephesians’ repeated ‘riches of grace’ language (1:7; 2:7) must never be read as a merit-store believers draw upon.
The Holy Spirit’s Personhood and Work
Burmese name: သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော်၏ ပုဂ္ဂိုလ်ဖြစ်ခြင်းနှင့် အမှုတော်
Key terms: sealed with the Spirit, access by one Spirit, unity of the Spirit, grieve the Holy Spirit, filled with the Spirit, sword of the Spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Never ဝိညာဉ် alone or နတ်ဝိညာဉ်. Ephesians is saturated with Spirit-language across every chapter; 4:30’s ‘grieve the Spirit’ is especially decisive, since it requires the Spirit’s relational personhood — Theravada anatta doctrine denies any permanent self, making this the doctrine most vulnerable to being flattened into an impersonal life-force or consciousness-stream.
Resurrection of Christ and Believers’ Present Positional Victory
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၏ ထမြောက်ခြင်းနှင့် ယုံကြည်သူတို့၏ လက်ရှိအောင်မြင်မှုအနေအထား
Key terms: raised, seated in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: Never ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း or ပြန်လည်မွေးဖွားခြင်း. Believers’ present, secure positional authority in Christ over the very powers named in 2:2 and 6:12 must not be diluted into a vague future hope, nor confused with Buddhist merit-based ascent through celestial deva/Brahma realms attained progressively through one’s own accumulated kutho.
Salvation by Grace through Faith
Burmese name: ကျေးဇူးတော်အားဖြင့် ယုံကြည်ခြင်းဖြင့် ကယ်တင်ခြင်း
Key terms: grace, faith, salvation, works, gift
Review routing: Human theologian
Ephesians 2:8-9 is the curriculum’s doctrinal center and the single highest-stakes term-collision point for a Myanmar Buddhist-background audience: ကောင်းမှုအကျင့် (good works/merit) is the operative vocabulary of daily lay merit-making (ကုသိုလ်ပြုခြင်း). The passage must be rendered so that grace-through-faith and works are held in strict, unmistakable antithesis, never read as two co-contributing causes analogous to ဒါန (giving) and သီလ (precept-keeping).
Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
Burmese name: ဝိညာဉ်ရေးစစ်တိုက်ခြင်းနှင့် ဘုရားသခင်၏ စစ်တန်ဆာအစုံ
Key terms: prince of the power of the air, rulers and authorities, cosmic powers, spiritual forces of evil, whole armor of God, wiles of the devil
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: This doctrine sits directly atop Burmese folk cosmology’s dense, populated spirit-world (37 nats, territorial guardian spirits, astrological sky-powers, weizza occult adepts). Must be taught explicitly that: (1) Satan and his hierarchy are real, personal, but already-defeated spiritual beings under Christ’s supremacy (1:20-22), not one nat among a pantheon to be placated; (2) the ‘armor of God’ is protective equipment for an already-decided conflict, not magical self-protection comparable to protective tattoos or amulets; (3) believers must not seek protective mediation from nats, astrologers, or weizza practitioners — prayer in Christ’s name and the armor are the sole prescribed defenses.
Union with Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၌ တစ်လုံးတစ်ဝတည်း ဖြစ်ခြင်း
Key terms: in Christ, made alive together with Christ, raised and seated with Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
The recurring ‘in Christ’ formula (roughly 30 occurrences) and the intensified compound verbs of 2:5-6 (made alive, raised, seated together with Christ) must convey a single, shared, once-for-all union with the risen and enthroned Christ — never a repeatable cycle of dying and reviving comparable to rebirth (ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း), and never a merely parallel or imitative experience.
High Risk Doctrines
Direct Access to God Through Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်အားဖြင့် ဘုရားသခင်ထံ တိုက်ရိုက်ချဉ်းကပ်ခွင့်
Key terms: access, one Spirit, boldness
Review routing: Human theologian
Must convey unmediated approach to God through Christ and the Spirit alone, with no need for an intermediary such as a nat, monk, or other religious intercessory figure — an important distinction given the prevalence of intercessory practice in Burmese folk religion, echoing the baseline’s caution on ‘intercession.‘
Church as God’s Holy Temple and Dwelling Place
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်၏ဗိမာန်တော်နှင့် ကျိန်းဝပ်တော်မူရာအဖြစ် အသင်းတော်
Key terms: holy temple, dwelling place of God, built together
Review routing: Human theologian
Must not be confused with a physical pagoda or monastic compound (ဘုရားကျောင်း/ဘုရားရိပ်သာ), already forbidden for ‘church’ in the baseline; this is the corporate people of God, Jew and Gentile together, as God’s own living dwelling by the Spirit.
The Church as the Body of Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၏ ကိုယ်ခန္ဓာအဖြစ် အသင်းတော်
Key terms: body, head, fullness, one body
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ as ဦးခေါင်း (head) must be consistently rendered as singular, cosmic, authoritative Head, not a senior elder/abbot-style teacher; the church as ကိုယ်ခန္ဓာ (body) filled with Christ’s ပြည့်စုံခြင်း (fullness) must not be misread through a Gnostic emanation-hierarchy lens or a merit-attained completeness framework.
Corporate Spiritual Maturity in Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၌ လူစုအားဖြင့် ရင့်ကျက်ပြည့်စုံခြင်း
Key terms: unity of the faith, knowledge of the Son of God, mature manhood, fullness of Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
Maturity must be measured corporately against Christ’s own fullness, not individual meritorious spiritual attainment on a private ladder toward perfection — a risk given cultural resonance with graduated spiritual-attainment frameworks in Buddhist practice.
The Glory of God as the Goal of Salvation
Burmese name: ကယ်တင်ခြင်း၏ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်ဖြစ်သော ဘုရားသခင်၏ ဘုန်းတော်
Key terms: to the praise of his glory, riches of his glory, glory in the church
Review routing: Human theologian
The recurring doxology refrain must be read as God’s own inherent honor freely displayed for his own praise, never ဘုန်းကံ (merit-power he has earned or that believers can accumulate); Ephesians 3:21’s closing doxology is a natural checkpoint for consistency with the Romans baseline’s caution on ‘glory.‘
Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships
Burmese name: အိမ်ထောင်စုဆိုင်ရာ စည်းကမ်းများနှင့် ခရစ်တော်ဗဟိုပြုသော ဆက်ဆံရေးများ
Key terms: submit to one another, wives submit, husband is head, children obey, fathers do not provoke, bondservants and masters
Review routing: Human theologian
Every household instruction (wife/husband, child/parent, servant/master) is explicitly grounded ‘in the Lord’ or ‘as to Christ,’ not in generic patriarchal, Confucian-filial, or Buddhist parental-merit norms; husband headship (5:23) must never be separated from Christ’s self-sacrificial pattern (5:25), and master/servant instruction (6:5-9) must never be read as divine endorsement of caste-like servitude.
The Love of God and Christlike Self-Giving Love
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်၏ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာနှင့် ခရစ်တော်နှင့်တူသော ကိုယ်ကျိုးစွန့်ချစ်ခြင်း
Key terms: love, rich in mercy, rooted and grounded in love, Christ gave himself
Review routing: Human theologian
ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ must be consistently distinguished from the Buddhist cultivated mental state မေတ္တာ, radiated impartially toward all beings without necessarily entailing self-sacrificial action; agapē in Ephesians is personal, chosen, covenantal, and cross-shaped, most concentrated in the household-code instruction that husbands love as Christ loved the church (5:25).
Marriage as a Revealed Picture of Christ and the Church
Burmese name: လင်မယားအရေးသည် ခရစ်တော်နှင့်အသင်းတော်၏ လျှို့ဝှက်ချက်တော်ကို ပုံဆောင်ခြင်း
Key terms: mystery, one flesh, Christ and the church
Review routing: Human theologian
Must retain the same ‘mystery’ term used in 1:9 and 3:4-6 so the reader recognizes the thematic connection Paul deliberately draws between Jew-Gentile unity and the marriage relationship as parallel revelations of the same gospel mystery.
Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Burmese name: ရွေးနှင်းခြင်းနှင့် ပြစ်လွှတ်ခြင်း
Key terms: redemption, blood, forgiveness of trespasses
Review routing: Human theologian
Redemption must convey a costly price paid by another (Christ’s blood) on the sinner’s behalf, not a self-achieved liberation comparable to escaping the cycle of samsara through personal discipline or merit; forgiveness is an immediate, complete debt-cancellation, not a gradually reduced moral balance.
Sanctification
Burmese name: သန့်ရှင်းခြင်း
Key terms: holy and blameless, sanctify, washing of water with the word
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s sanctifying, cleansing love for the church (5:26) must be read as Spirit-and-word-effected transformation, not a mechanical ritual purification comparable to ceremonial bathing at a pagoda, nor a self-directed discipline of precept-keeping.
Sealing and Guarantee of the Holy Spirit
Burmese name: ဝိညာဉ်တော်ဖြင့် တံဆိပ်ခတ်ခြင်းနှင့် အာမခံချက်
Key terms: sealed, guarantee, pledge, grieve the Holy Spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
The Spirit’s sealing must convey secure divine ownership and guarantee, not a magical protective mark comparable to protective tattoos or amulet-seals (in-saq/ban zat) common in Burmese folk-Buddhist protective practice; 4:30’s ‘grieve the Spirit’ additionally requires the Spirit’s full, personal divine identity, capable of relational sorrow.
Spiritual Deadness and Total Depravity
Burmese name: ဝိညာဉ်ရေးအားဖြင့် သေဆုံးနေသောအခြေအနေ
Key terms: dead in trespasses, sons of disobedience, lusts of the flesh
Review routing: Human theologian
Burmese death-vocabulary carries strong Buddhist funerary and impermanence (အနိစ္စ) associations that treat death/rebirth as an expected, cyclical natural process; here ‘dead’ must be taught as total relational incapacity toward a personal God, not a stage in an ongoing cycle, and never softened to mere weakness.
The Mystery of Christ Revealed
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၏ လျှို့ဝှက်ချက်တော် ပေါ်ထွန်းခြင်း
Key terms: mystery, revealed, fellow heirs, manifold wisdom
Review routing: Human theologian
The ‘mystery’ must be taught as a plan now openly and fully revealed in the gospel to all who believe — specifically Gentile co-heirship with Israel (3:6) — not an esoteric teaching reserved for an initiated elite, which risks resonance with esoteric weizza (occult adept) traditions or teachings reserved for monastics in Burmese religious culture.
Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity
Burmese name: ယုဒလူမျိုးနှင့် တစ်ပါးအမျိုးသားတို့ လူသစ်တစ်ဦးတည်းအဖြစ် စည်းလုံးခြင်း
Key terms: dividing wall of hostility, one new man, reconcile, fellow citizens, fellow heirs
Review routing: Human theologian
The ‘dividing wall’ torn down by Christ must be extended by clear implication to any analogous ethnic/religious barrier a Myanmar audience might import, including sensitivities around Bamar-Buddhist majority religious-national identity versus ethnic-minority Christian communities; the ‘one new man’ must be taught as a genuinely new corporate humanity, not a merged alliance of two old groups, echoing the baseline’s existing High-risk caution on this doctrine.
Walking in Newness of Life
Burmese name: အသက်တာအသစ်၌ ကျင့်နေခြင်း
Key terms: walk, old self, new self, created, renewed in the mind
Review routing: Human theologian
The old-self/new-self exchange (4:22-24) must convey a decisive, once-for-all identity change accomplished in union with Christ, not a gradual moral self-improvement project akin to progressively purifying one’s mind through discipline; good works must always be taught as the fruit of this new identity, never its cause.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Adoption into God’s Family
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်၏အိမ်ထောင်စုတွင် သားအဖြစ်ခံယူခြင်း
Key terms: adoption, sons through Jesus Christ
Review routing: Native speaker review
Burmese customary adoption is culturally well understood; the emphasis needed is that this sonship is predestined, full, and secured by grace, not a provisional or merit-earned family status.
Gifts for Building Up the Church
Burmese name: အသင်းတော်ကို တည်ဆောက်ရန် ဆုကျေးဇူးများ
Key terms: measure of the gift of Christ, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers, equipping, building up the body
Review routing: Native speaker review
Gift-offices are sovereignly apportioned by Christ for the equipping of the whole body, not differing merit-levels among believers; သိုးထိန်း (pastor/shepherd) must not be confused with the monastic teacher-role ဆရာတော်.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving and Prayer
Burmese name: ကျေးဇူးတင်ခြင်းနှင့် ဆုတောင်းခြင်း
Key terms: thanksgiving, praying always in the Spirit, supplication
Review routing: Automated review
Standard vocabulary with minor risk of collapsing into ritual merit-dedication language; prayer must remain direct, Spirit-enabled address to God, not petition to intermediary spirits.
