Cross-Reference Analysis

09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — 2 Timothy

Purpose and Method

This document maps every Old Testament quotation, Old Testament allusion, messianic reference, and typological pattern found in 2 Timothy, chapter by chapter, first to last, and cross-references each to (a) its OT/NT source, and (b) parallel material already translated in the Romans Language Package. Where 2 Timothy echoes a passage, phrase, or doctrine already rendered in Romans, a rendering-consistency rule is recorded so Phase 2 translation reuses the exact established Burmese wording rather than re-deriving an independent rendering.

Citation normalization convention: All citations in this document use the normalized “Book Chapter:Verse” form (e.g., “Romans 1:3-4,” “Numbers 16:5,” “2 Timothy 2:8”) for internal cross-reference tracking, matching the convention used in prior Phase 1 documents. Published Myanmar-script citation format follows 12_ai_translation_requirements.md’s Myanmar Bible Society book-name conventions (e.g., ရောမ, ဆာလံကျမ်း). This document adds the following book names to that list, needed for 2 Timothy’s cross-references:

Genesisကမ္ဘာဦးကျမ်း
Exodusထွက်မြောက်ရာကျမ်း

Governing rule: Every term already recorded in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json or in 08_core_glossary.md MUST be reused with its exact recorded Burmese rendering wherever it recurs in this cross-reference set. No new rendering may be independently invented for a shared quotation, doxology, or theological formula that already has an established Burmese form from Romans.

PART A — Cross-Reference Matrix by Chapter

2 Timothy 1:5Inherited, personally-owned faithLois, Eunice, TimothyGenesis 17:7 (covenant extending to descendants); Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (teaching children); NT parallel Romans 4:16-17 (Abraham, father of all who believe)Medium — faith passed through a godly household must be taught as relationally transmitted and personally owned, not an inherited merit-lineage automatically conferred.
2 Timothy 1:6Commissioning by laying on of handsPaul, TimothyNumbers 27:18-23 (Moses commissions Joshua); Deuteronomy 34:9Low-Medium — a recognized biblical ordination act; must not be reframed as a guru’s transfer of esoteric power (weizza-adjacent framework).
2 Timothy 1:7Spirit of power, love, self-control vs. fearNT parallel Romans 8:15 (“spirit of slavery to fear” vs. Spirit of adoption); 1 John 4:18High — reuse Romans 8:15’s fear/Spirit contrast pattern; this is a God-given disposition, not an independent spirit-being (see 08 glossary note).
2 Timothy 1:9-10Eternal grace revealed at Christ’s appearingChrist JesusTitus 1:2-3 (grace promised before the ages); Ephesians 1:4; NT parallel Romans 16:25-26 (mystery hidden for long ages, now revealed)High — “before the ages began” must be rendered as timeless, pre-creation divine purpose, never assimilated to karmic accumulation across cosmic ages (kappa).
2 Timothy 1:10Christ’s appearing abolishes deathChrist JesusIsaiah 25:8 (“he will swallow up death forever”); Hosea 13:14 (quoted 1 Corinthians 15:54-55); NT parallel Romans 6:9 (“death no longer has dominion over him”)Critical — ties Incarnation/Resurrection doctrine to the same forbidden-substitution rules as Romans (ထမြောက်ခြင်း, လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း).
2 Timothy 1:12Unashamed suffering for the gospelPaulIsaiah 50:7 (Servant, “I shall not be put to shame”); Psalm 25:2-3; Psalm 119:46; NT parallel Romans 1:16 (“not ashamed of the gospel”)High — rendering-consistency rule: must match Romans 1:16’s “not ashamed” (ရှက်ခြင်းမရှိ) construction exactly.
2 Timothy 1:13Pattern of sound wordsNT parallel Romans 6:17 (“the standard of teaching to which you were entrusted,” τύπος διδαχῆς)Medium — same “pattern/standard” concept-family as Romans 6:17.
2 Timothy 1:14Holy Spirit indwelling guards the depositHoly SpiritNT parallel Romans 8:9, 8:11 (“the Spirit who dwells in you”)Critical — reuse Romans’s သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော် exactly; indwelling verb should align with Romans 8:11’s usage.
2 Timothy 1:16-18Mercy shown to a persecuted apostleOnesiphorusGenesis 18:1-8 (hospitality pattern); Matthew 25:36 (“you visited me”)Low-Medium — standard hospitality/mercy vocabulary.

2 Timothy 2:8Descended from David, raised from the deadJesus Christ, David2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic covenant); Psalm 89:3-4; DIRECT PARALLEL Romans 1:3-4Criticalrendering-consistency rule: MUST use the exact Romans TM renderings ဒါဝိဒ်၏အနွယ်ဝင် (seed of David) and ထမြောက်ခြင်း (resurrection). This is the single most important cross-curriculum anchor point between 2 Timothy and Romans.
2 Timothy 2:11-13Died/live with him; deny/God remains faithfulNumbers 23:19 (God does not lie); NT parallel Romans 6:8 (“if we have died with Christ, we believe we will also live with him”); Matthew 10:33 (deny before men)High — rendering-consistency rule: “died with him… live with him” clause should echo Romans 6:8’s union-with-Christ phrasing.
2 Timothy 2:13God’s faithfulness despite human unfaithfulnessGodNumbers 23:19; Psalm 116:11 (quoted Romans 3:4, “let God be true though every man a liar”); NT parallel Romans 3:3-4High — shares theological ground with Romans 3:3-4; “faithful” (သစ္စာရှိသော) must retain God’s unwavering character consistently.
2 Timothy 2:19”The Lord knows those who are his”DIRECT OT QUOTATION Numbers 16:5 (LXX, in the Korah rebellion); echo of Numbers 16:26-27 / Isaiah 26:13; NT parallel Romans 8:29 (foreknew)High — connects to Romans’s Effectual Calling/Election doctrine (ရွေးကောက်ခြင်း); “knows” must be rendered as covenantal, saving recognition, not mere cognitive awareness.
2 Timothy 2:20-21Vessels of gold/silver/wood/clayJeremiah 18:1-6 (potter and clay); Isaiah 45:9; DIRECT NT PARALLEL Romans 9:21 (potter’s right over the clay)High — rendering-consistency rule: if Romans 9:21 established a Burmese term for “vessel/clay,” 2 Timothy’s σκεῦος must align; recommend formally adding “vessel” (skeuos, ခွက်ယောက်) as a shared cross-curriculum glossary entry.
2 Timothy 2:22Pursue righteousness, faith, love, peaceNT parallel Romans 12:9-13; 1 Thessalonians 5:15Medium — reuses baseline Romans terms exactly.
2 Timothy 2:24-26Gentleness, correction, the devil’s snare, repentanceProverbs 15:1 (a gentle answer); NT parallel Ephesians 4:26-27 (give no opportunity to the devil)Critical — διάβολος/မာရ်နတ် Māra-collision risk (see 08 glossary); requires standing translator note.

2 Timothy 3:5Form of godliness denying its powerIsaiah 29:13 (quoted Matthew 15:8, “honors me with lips”); NT parallel Romans 2:17-24 (boasting in the law, dishonoring God)High — outward religious performance masking denial of God’s transforming power; culturally acute given emphasis on visible devotional practice.
2 Timothy 3:8Jannes and Jambres, opponents of MosesJannes, Jambres, Moses (implicit)Exodus 7:11, 22 (Pharaoh’s magicians, unnamed in Exodus; named in later Jewish tradition, e.g., Targum Pseudo-Jonathan)Medium — requires an explanatory footnote since the names do not appear in the Myanmar OT text of Exodus itself; typological parallel to last-days opposition against God’s true messenger.
2 Timothy 3:11Persecutions endured; “the Lord delivered me”PaulPsalm 34:19 (“many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him”); NT parallel Romans 8:35-39High — connects to Romans’s Assurance of Salvation doctrine; “deliver/rescue” (ကယ်နှုတ်) vocabulary should remain consistent with Romans 8:35-39.

No chapter of 2 Timothy lacks cross-reference material; all four chapters are represented above and none are silently omitted.

PART B — Messianic References and Typology

  1. Davidic Sonship and Resurrection (2 Timothy 2:8). The letter’s clearest messianic-fulfillment statement, restating Romans 1:3-4’s cluster (Davidic descent, bodily resurrection) as Paul’s compact “my gospel.” This is the strongest single point of doctrinal and lexical overlap between the two curricula and must use identical Burmese terms.
  2. The Two Appearings of Christ (ἐπιφάνεια). 2 Timothy 1:10 names Christ’s first, incarnate appearing (abolishing death, bringing life and immortality to light); 4:1 and 4:8 name his future, visible appearing as Judge. Both are single, historical, bodily events — never a repeatable spiritual manifestation, and never assimilated to a nat-spirit’s temporary possession/descent.
  3. Timothy as “Man of God” — Prophetic-Office Typology (3:17). The OT title used of Moses (Deuteronomy 33:1), Elijah (1 Kings 17:18, 24), and Samuel (1 Samuel 9:6) is extended to the minister equipped by Scripture — a title of divine commission and accountability continuing the OT prophetic line, not a mere honorific.
  4. Timothy/Jeremiah Commissioning Typology (4:2). Timothy’s charge to “preach the word” echoes Jeremiah’s commissioning as a young, reluctant prophet (Jeremiah 1:6-8, 1:17) — both are given a message not their own to proclaim regardless of personal hesitancy or hostile reception.
  5. Paul’s Death as Libation-Offering Typology (4:6). Paul frames his approaching martyrdom using the OT drink-offering ritual (Numbers 15:5, 10; Exodus 29:40-41), transposing the sacrificial pattern into self-giving gospel service — fulfilled, not repeated as an ongoing meritorious rite.
  6. Jannes and Jambres as a Type of Last-Days Opposition (3:8). Just as Pharaoh’s magicians opposed Moses, God’s true messenger, so false teachers oppose apostolic truth in “the last days” — an established typological pairing in Jewish tradition that 2 Timothy applies directly to its own moment.
  7. Daniel’s Deliverance Typology (4:17). “Rescued from the lion’s mouth” echoes both Psalm 22:21 and the narrative of Daniel 6, casting Paul’s deliverance from mortal danger in the same pattern as God’s historic rescue of his faithful servants.
  8. Korah’s Rebellion Typology (2:19). “The Lord knows those who are his,” quoted from Numbers 16:5, originally distinguished God’s true people from Korah’s rebellion against Moses’ God-given authority — in 2 Timothy it distinguishes true believers from those who follow false teachers, an apt typological transfer of authority-rebellion imagery.

PART C — Parallels to the Romans Curriculum and Rendering-Consistency Rules

Because 2 Timothy and Romans will be studied by the same learners using the same Language Package, every point of textual or doctrinal overlap below requires identical Burmese rendering, not merely similar rendering.

1Romans 1:3-42 Timothy 2:8Seed of David + resurrectionUse ဒါဝိဒ်၏အနွယ်ဝင် and ထမြောက်ခြင်း verbatim in both.

Version Control Note

This document extends 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md. All rendering-consistency rules above must be enforced in Phase 2 alongside the standard translation-memory-load procedure in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md. Rule 10 (vessel/skeuos) requires a new shared glossary entry to be added to translation memory before either curriculum’s Phase 2 segments touching Romans 9:21 or 2 Timothy 2:20-21 are finalized.
