Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — 1 Timothy (Koine Greek)
English → Burmese | Full-Book Coverage
Method note: This analysis loads and extends the Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json). Any term already established in that package (e.g. ယုံကြည်ခြင်း for faith, ကျေးဇူးတော် for grace, ဘုရားသခင် for God, သခင် for Lord, အသင်းတော် for church) is reused exactly and marked “(baseline reuse)” below. New terms required by 1 Timothy’s distinctive vocabulary are analyzed in full and proposed for addition to translation memory in Step 8 (08_core_glossary.md).
Proper name conventions follow the established Myanmar Bible / Judson tradition already documented in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md: Ἰησοῦς = ယေရှု, Χριστός = ခရစ်တော်, Παῦλος = ပေါလု, Τιμόθεος = တိမောသေ.
PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 1 Timothy 3:1-13
3:1
Greek: Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος· εἴ τις ἐπισκοπῆς ὀρέγεται, καλοῦ ἔργου ἐπιθυμεῖ.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πιστὸς ὁ λόγος | pistos ho logos | ”faithful/trustworthy is the word/saying” | A fixed formula Paul uses 5x in the Pastorals (1 Tim 1:15; 3:1; 4:9; 2 Tim 2:11; Titus 3:8) to mark a statement as reliable, authoritative teaching | ”This is a trustworthy saying,” “faithful is the saying,” “this is a true statement” | Authenticates the reliability of what follows as apostolic, Spirit-given truth, not folk proverb | ယုံကြည်ရသောစကားဖြစ်၏ (yunkyi-ya-thaw zagar hpyit-i). Risk: Medium. Must read as an authentication formula, not a mere transition phrase; keep rendering identical at all 5 occurrences in the book for consistency. |
| ἐπισκοπή | episkopē | ”oversight, superintendence” (episkopos = “one who watches over”) | The office/function of overseeing a congregation | ”office of bishop,” “overseership,” “office of overseer” | The pastoral leadership office of the local church — see full treatment at v.2 (ἐπίσκοπος) | သင်းအုပ်ရာထူး (thin-oke ya-htu, “the overseer office”). Risk: High. See ἐπίσκοπος below. |
| ὀρέγομαι | oregomai | ”to stretch out toward, to aspire to, to reach for” | Used positively here (contrast 1 Tim 6:10 where the same verb describes wrongly “reaching for” money) | “aspires to,” “desires,” “seeks” | A right, Spirit-prompted aspiration to serve, not self-promotion | ဆန္ဒရှိခြင်း/ရှာလှမ်းခြင်း (hsanda shi-chin, “to have the desire/aspiration”). Risk: Low. |
| καλὸν ἔργον | kalon ergon | ”good work/task” | A noble, honorable undertaking | ”good work,” “noble task,” “honorable work” | Church leadership is framed as a good work of service, not a status prize | ကောင်းမှုအကျင့် / ကောင်းသောအလုပ် (kaung-thaw a-lote). Risk: Low. Distinguish from ကုသိုလ် (merit-earning deed) per baseline rule on righteousness/grace — this “good work” is service rendered, not merit accumulated toward salvation. |
3:2
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐπίσκοπος | episkopos | ”overseer, one who watches over” (epi- “over” + skopeō “to look/watch”) | The chief local-congregation leadership office; used interchangeably with πρεσβύτερος (elder) in the Pastorals (cf. Titus 1:5-7) | “bishop,” “overseer,” “pastor” | The office of shepherding oversight of a local congregation — doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership | သင်းအုပ် (thin-oke, “one who holds/oversees the congregation”). Risk: High. Must be taught as a functional shepherding office qualified by character (vv.2-7), never as a monastic seniority rank granted by years-since-ordination (cf. Buddhist theravada seniority, ဆရာတော်/သီတင်းရင့်), and never treated as inherently more “holy” than lay believers. Cross-reference baseline’s rejection of ဆရာတော် for “apostle” — same collision risk applies here. |
| ἀνεπίλημπτος | anepilēmptos | ”not to be laid hold of,” i.e., “unimpeachable, above reproach, blameless” | No valid accusation can be sustained against the person’s public reputation | ”above reproach,” “blameless,” “irreproachable” | The first, governing qualification — a life that gives no valid ground for accusation | အပြစ်တင်ခွင့်မရှိသော (a-pyit-tin khwin-ma-shi-thaw, “having no ground on which to be accused”). Risk: Low. |
| μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα | mias gynaikos andra | ”a man/husband of one woman/wife” | Debated: (a) monogamous (not polygamous), (b) faithful to one’s wife, (c) married only once (excludes remarried widowers/divorced). All three readings exist in commentary tradition | ”husband of one wife,” “faithful to his one wife,” “married only once” | Marital faithfulness/singularity as a leadership qualification | မယားတစ်ယောက်တည်းရှိသောလင် (myar tit-yauk-thi-shi-thaw lin). Risk: Medium. Render literally; do NOT resolve the interpretive debate in the translation itself — flag for theologian review since Myanmar culture includes both historic royal/elite polygamy memory and contemporary informal second-family practice, making this qualification culturally pointed and easily either over- or under-translated. |
| νηφάλιος | nēphalios | ”sober, temperate” (root: νήφω, “to be free from the influence of wine”) | Both literal sobriety and figurative clear-mindedness/watchfulness | ”sober-minded,” “temperate,” “clear-headed” | Mental clarity and self-command, not intoxicated by wine or by status | သတိရှိသော (thati-shi-thaw, “watchful/alert”). Risk: Medium. သတိ is also the precise Burmese-Buddhist term for meditative “mindfulness” (Pali sati) cultivated through vipassana practice. Must be taught here as ordinary sober watchfulness of character before God and people, not a technical meditative attainment. |
| σώφρων | sōphrōn | ”of sound mind, self-controlled, sensible” | Disciplined self-mastery over impulses and desires | ”self-controlled,” “sensible,” “prudent” | Disciplined, Spirit-governed self-mastery, not self-effort toward enlightened detachment | ထိန်းချုပ်နိုင်သော (htein-choke-nai-thaw, “able to restrain/govern oneself”). Risk: Low-Medium. Distinguish from Buddhist self-discipline practiced to reduce craving for one’s own liberation; here it flows from the Spirit for the sake of trustworthy service to others. |
| κόσμιος | kosmios | ”orderly, well-arranged, respectable” (root κόσμος, “order”) | Outwardly disciplined, decorous conduct | ”respectable,” “orderly,” “well-behaved” | Visible, consistent good order in daily conduct | အသေအချာနေထိုင်သော (a-thei-a-char ne-htain-thaw). Risk: Low. |
| φιλόξενος | philoxenos | ”loving strangers/guests” (philos + xenos) | Active hospitality, especially toward traveling believers who depended on host homes | ”hospitable,” “given to hospitality” | Practical, sacrificial welcome of others into one’s home for the sake of the church’s mission | ဧည့်ဝတ်ကျေပွန်သော (e-wutt kyay-pwun-thaw, “one who fulfills the duty of a host”). Risk: Low. |
| διδακτικός | didaktikos | ”skilled/apt in teaching” | Able and willing to instruct others in sound doctrine | ”able to teach,” “apt to teach” | An essential, non-optional qualification tying leadership directly to guarding/transmitting sound doctrine | သင်ကြားနိုင်စွမ်းရှိသော (thinkya-nai-swan-shi-thaw). Risk: Medium. Ties directly to the “Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching” doctrine; ensure this is not reduced to public-speaking skill alone but includes doctrinal soundness. |
3:3
Greek: μὴ πάροινον, μὴ πλήκτην, ἀλλὰ ἐπιεικῆ, ἄμαχον, ἀφιλάργυρον,
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πάροινος | paroinos | ”given to wine, a drunkard” | Habitual, excessive wine use | ”drunkard,” “given to drink” | Disqualifying vice — bodily self-mastery is required of a leader | အရက်သမားမဟုတ်သော (a-yet-thamar ma-houk-thaw). Risk: Low. |
| πλήκτης | plēktēs | ”a striker, a violent/quarrelsome person” | Physical or verbal violence in resolving conflict | ”violent,” “pugnacious,” “quick-tempered” | Disqualifying vice — a leader must not rule by force or intimidation | ရိုက်နှက်တတ်သော သဘောရှိသူမဟုတ် (yaik-nak-tat-thaw thabaw ma-houk). Risk: Low. |
| ἐπιεικής | epieikēs | ”gentle, considerate, yielding” | Willingness to forgo one’s own rights for the good of others; gracious forbearance | ”gentle,” “considerate,” “forbearing” | Positive counter-virtue to violence — Christlike gentleness in exercising authority | နူးညံ့သိမ်မွေ့သော (nu-nyan thein-mway-thaw). Risk: Low. |
| ἄμαχος | amachos | ”not a fighter, peaceable” | Not contentious or combative in disposition | ”peaceable,” “not quarrelsome” | Peacemaking disposition required for church unity | ရန်ဒေါသကင်းသော (yan-dawtha kin-thaw). Risk: Low. |
| ἀφιλάργυρος | aphilargyros | ”not a lover of money” (a- + philos + argyros, “silver”) | Freedom from greed as a driving motive | ”not a lover of money,” “not greedy,” “free from love of money” | Anticipates 6:10’s “root of all evils”; leadership must not be a vehicle for financial gain | ငွေကိုမတပ်မက်သော (ngwe-ko ma-tat-met-thaw). Risk: Medium. Cross-reference doctrine “Godliness and Contentment” (6:6-10); must not be softened into merely “not stingy” — the concern is disordered craving for money, echoed strongly at 6:10. |
3:4-3:5
Greek: τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου καλῶς προϊστάμενον, τέκνα ἔχοντα ἐν ὑποταγῇ μετὰ πάσης σεμνότητος· εἰ δέ τις τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου προστῆναι οὐκ οἶδεν, πῶς ἐκκλησίας θεοῦ ἐπιμελήσεται;
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| προΐστημι | proistēmi | ”to stand before, to manage, to preside over” | Household management sense here; elsewhere (5:17) used of elders “ruling” the church | ”managing,” “presiding over,” “leading” | The household is the proving ground for the qualification to lead the church | ကောင်းစွာအုပ်ချုပ်ခြင်း (kaung-swa oat-choke-chin, “managing well”). Risk: Low-Medium. Same verb governs both household and (implicitly, by analogy in v.5) the church; keep the semantic link visible in translation so the analogy is not lost. |
| τέκνα ἐν ὑποταγῇ | tekna en hypotagē | ”children in submission” | Orderly, respectful, obedient household children | ”children who obey/submit,” “children under control” | Visible household order as evidence of a leader’s capacity for church oversight | နာခံမှုရှိသောသားသမီးများ (nakhan-hmu shi-thaw thar-thami-myar). Risk: Low. |
| σεμνότης | semnotēs | ”dignity, seriousness, reverence, respectability” | Weighty, honorable seriousness of character/conduct | ”dignity,” “respectfulness,” “reverence” | A quality of gravitas appropriate to a household under godly order | ဂုဏ်သိက္ခာ (gun-thate-hka). Risk: Low-Medium. Recurs at 2:2 (of all believers) and 3:11 (of deacons’ wives) — keep rendering consistent across all three occurrences. |
| ἐκκλησία θεοῦ | ekklēsia theou | ”assembly/church of God” | The corporate, gathered people of God | ”church of God,” “God’s church,” “assembly of God” | The local congregation as God’s own possession — reuse baseline church + God terms | ဘုရားသခင်၏အသင်းတော် (Phayarthakhin i athin-taw). (Baseline reuse — church, god.) Risk: Medium. Keep exact baseline forms; never render ἐκκλησία as a building. |
| ἐπιμελέομαι | epimeleomai | ”to take care of, to attend to” | Active, hands-on pastoral care and responsibility | ”care for,” “take care of,” “look after” | The overseer’s care for the church mirrors a father’s care for his household | ကြည့်ရှုစောင့်ရှောက်ခြင်း (kyi-shu-saung-shauk-chin). Risk: Low. Cf. baseline’s providence term (ဘုရားသခင်၏ကြည့်ရှုစောင့်ရှောက်မှု) — related root, distinct referent (human pastoral care, not divine providence); do not conflate. |
3:6-3:7
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| νεόφυτος | neophytos | ”newly planted” (of a plant); figuratively, a recent convert | A believer too new in the faith to bear leadership weight | ”new convert,” “recent convert,” “novice” | Spiritual maturity, not mere enthusiasm or ability, is required before oversight is given | ယုံကြည်သစ် (yun-kyi-thit, “newly-believing one”). Risk: Low. |
| τυφόομαι | typhoomai | ”to be puffed up with smoke/conceit” | Blinding pride produced by sudden elevation to status | ”puffed up with conceit,” “blinded by pride,” “conceited” | Pride is the specific danger of premature promotion | ကိုယ်ကိုမြင့်မားစွာထင်ခြင်း (ko-ko myint-mar-swa tin-chin). Risk: Low. |
| κρίμα τοῦ διαβόλου | krima tou diabolou | ”the judgment/condemnation of the devil” | The same downfall pattern that condemned the devil (pride → fall) | “condemnation of the devil,” “the devil’s judgment,” “fall into the devil’s condemnation” | Pride-driven fall echoes Satan’s own primordial sin | မာရ်နတ်ခံရသော စီရင်ချက် — REJECTED. Use စာတန်ခံရသော စီရင်ချက် (Sartan-khan-ya-thaw si-yin-chet). Risk: Critical. See διάβολος below. |
| διάβολος | diabolos | ”slanderer, accuser” (from diaballō, “to throw across, accuse”) | Used in the NT both as the proper title for Satan and as a common adjective (“slanderous,” cf. v.11 of women) | “the devil,” “slanderer,” “the accuser” | The personal chief spiritual adversary of God and his people | စာတန် (Sartan — same referent as Σατανᾶς, 1:20). Risk: Critical. Burmese Christian usage sometimes borrows the pre-existing Buddhist figure မာရ်နတ် (Mara, the tempter-deity who opposed the Buddha’s enlightenment quest) for “devil.” This substitution must be forbidden. Mara is one contestant deity within Buddhist cosmology who is eventually defeated and left behind; Satan/diabolos is the ongoing personal enemy of God and the church throughout redemptive history, not a single-episode cosmological figure. Always render with the transliterated စာတန်, consistent whether the Greek word is Σατανᾶς or διάβολος. |
| μαρτυρία καλή | martyria kalē | ”good testimony/witness” | A credible, favorable reputation among outsiders | ”good reputation,” “good testimony,” “well spoken of” | Public credibility outside the church protects the gospel’s reputation | ကောင်းသောသက်သေခံခြင်း (kaung-thaw thet-thei-khan-chin). Risk: Low. |
| ὀνειδισμός | oneidismos | ”reproach, disgrace” | Public shame or scorn | ”reproach,” “disgrace,” “public shame” | The relational/honor-shame stakes of a leader’s public conduct | ကဲ့ရဲ့ခြင်း (ke-yeh-chin). Risk: Low-Medium. Honor/shame dynamics are culturally weighty in Myanmar; flag for native-speaker review per baseline’s general caution on honor/shame passages. |
| παγίς τοῦ διαβόλου | pagis tou diabolou | ”snare/trap of the devil” | A hidden trap leading to entrapment and downfall | ”snare of the devil,” “the devil’s trap” | The devil actively sets traps exploiting a leader’s weaknesses (pride, disrepute) | စာတန်၏ ကျော့ကွင်း (Sartan i kyaw-kwin). Risk: High. Same forbidden-substitution rule as διάβολος above applies. |
3:8-3:9
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| διάκονος | diakonos | ”servant, minister, one who waits on tables/serves” | A recognized office of practical service alongside the overseers (cf. Phil 1:1) | “deacon,” “servant,” “minister” | The second recognized office of church leadership, service-oriented — doctrine: Qualifications for Church Leadership | သင်းထောက် (thin-htaunk, “one who assists/supports the congregation”). Risk: Medium. Must be taught as a genuine, honored church office of service alongside the overseer, not a junior monastic-attendant role or a merely secular helper position without spiritual qualification. |
| δίλογος | dilogos | ”double-tongued, saying one thing to one person and another to another” | Inconsistency/duplicity in speech | ”double-tongued,” “insincere,” “saying different things to different people” | Integrity of speech required for a trusted servant-leader | စကားနှစ်လျှာသုံးသော (zagar hnit-shar thoun-thaw). Risk: Low. |
| αἰσχροκερδής | aischrokerdēs | ”greedy for shameful/dishonest gain” | Financial dishonesty or exploitation | ”greedy for money,” “fond of dishonest gain” | Deacons often handled church funds/charity distribution (cf. Acts 6); financial integrity is essential | ရှက်ဖွယ်စွာငွေရှာတတ်သော (shet-hpwe-swa ngwe-shar-tat-thaw). Risk: Medium. Cross-reference 6:10 love-of-money doctrine. |
| μυστήριον τῆς πίστεως | mystērion tēs pisteōs | ”the mystery of the faith” | A previously hidden divine truth now fully revealed — here, the whole gospel content summarized at 3:16 | ”the mystery of the faith,” “the deep truth of the faith,” “the revealed truth of the faith” | The gospel truth deacons must hold and guard, not merely serve tables without doctrinal grounding | ယုံကြည်ခြင်း၏ နက်နဲသောအရာတော် (yun-kyi-chin i nat-nè-thaw a-yar-taw). Risk: Critical. In Burmese religious culture, “hidden/secret matters” (လျှို့ဝှက်ချက်) evoke esoteric knowledge accessible only to adepts (weizza) through hidden arts. Biblical mystērion is the opposite direction: a truth once hidden but now openly, fully revealed to all believers in the gospel — never an ongoing secret reserved for spiritual elites. Must never be rendered with လျှို့ဝှက်ချက်; use နက်နဲသောအရာတော် (“a profound divine matter”) with an explicit teaching note. |
| καθαρὰ συνείδησις | kathara syneidēsis | ”a clean/clear conscience” | Inward moral integrity, undefiled by known unconfessed sin | ”clear conscience,” “pure conscience,” “clean conscience” | Doctrine held together with integrity of life, not truth divorced from character | စင်ကြယ်သောသိစိတ် (sinkyeh-thaw thi-seit). Risk: High. See συνείδησις full treatment at 1:5 (Chapter 1). |
3:10
Greek: καὶ οὗτοι δὲ δοκιμαζέσθωσαν πρῶτον, εἶτα διακονείτωσαν ἀνέγκλητοι ὄντες.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοκιμάζω | dokimazō | ”to test, examine, prove by testing” (as metal is tested by fire) | A process of vetting/proving character before appointment | ”tested,” “examined,” “proven” | Church office is granted only after observed, proven character — not self-appointment or automatic succession | စစ်ဆေးခြင်း (sit-hkay-chin). Risk: Low-Medium. Important for the doctrine of Qualifications for Church Leadership: office follows demonstrated character, not seniority, family lineage, or donation size — a point worth flagging given cultural patterns of position by seniority or patronage. |
| ἀνέγκλητος | anenklētos | ”not to be called to account, blameless, irreproachable” | Near-synonym of ἀνεπίλημπτος (v.2); no valid legal/moral accusation stands | ”blameless,” “beyond reproach,” “irreproachable” | Confirmed, tested blamelessness required before service begins | အပြစ်တင်စရာမရှိသော (a-pyit-tin-za-ya ma-shi-thaw). Risk: Low. Note to translators: this is a distinct Greek word from ἀνεπίλημπτος (v.2) though near-synonymous; Burmese may naturally render both similarly — flag for consistency check, not doctrinal risk. |
3:11
Greek: γυναῖκας ὡσαύτως σεμνάς, μὴ διαβόλους, νηφαλίους, πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γυναῖκας | gynaikas | ”women” | Debated referent: (a) deacons’ wives, (b) women deacons/deaconesses in their own right | ”their wives,” “women,” “women deacons” | Directly relevant to Qualifications for Church Leadership; translation choice has real ecclesiological weight | အမျိုးသမီးများ (a-myo-thami-myar, “women”). Risk: High. Render literally and generically as “women,” preserving the Greek’s genuine ambiguity; do NOT resolve the deacon-wife vs. deaconess debate through translation choice. Flag for mandatory human theologian review. |
| διάβολος (adj.) | diabolos | ”slanderous” (adjectival use of the same word rendered “devil” elsewhere) | Malicious, harmful gossip/slander | ”slanderers,” “malicious gossips” | A wordplay in the Greek (the same word used for “the devil” at vv.6-7 describes slanderous speech here) that is unavoidably lost when Burmese uses different words (စာတန် vs. ကုန်းတိုက်သူ) for the two senses | ကုန်းတိုက်သူများ (kone-taik-thu-myar, “slanderers/backbiters”). Risk: Medium. Add a translator note flagging the lost Greek wordplay for teaching material, since the same root links “the devil’s snare” (v.7) and slanderous speech (v.11) thematically. |
| πιστὰς ἐν πᾶσιν | pistas en pasin | ”faithful/trustworthy in all things” | Consistent trustworthiness across all areas of conduct | ”faithful in all things,” “trustworthy in everything” | Comprehensive, not selective, trustworthiness | အရာရာ၌ယုံကြည်စိတ်ချရသော (a-yar-yar twin yun-kyi seikcha-ya-thaw). (Baseline reuse root — faith.) Risk: Low. |
3:12
Greek: διάκονοι ἔστωσαν μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρες, τέκνων καλῶς προϊστάμενοι καὶ τῶν ἰδίων οἴκων·
No new terms; repeats διάκονος, μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα, and προΐστημι from vv.2, 4, 8 above — applied specifically to deacons, confirming the household-management qualification extends to both offices. Risk: Medium (consistency requirement — same Burmese renderings as vv.2 and 4 must be used here without variation).
3:13
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| διακονέω | diakoneō | ”to serve, minister” (verb form of διάκονος) | Faithful discharge of the deacon’s service | ”having served,” “having ministered” | Service well-rendered has genuine spiritual reward | ကောင်းစွာအမှုတော်ဆောင်ခြင်း (kaung-swa a-hmu-taw-saung-chin). Risk: Low. |
| βαθμὸν καλόν | bathmon kalon | ”a good step/standing/rank” | Growing spiritual standing/respect earned through faithful service | ”good standing,” “high standing,” “good reputation” | Reward is standing/respect in the Christian community, not merit banked toward salvation | ကောင်းသောအဆင့်အတန်း (kaung-thaw a-sin-a-tan). Risk: High. Must be carefully distinguished from ကုသိုလ် (accumulated Buddhist merit that improves one’s cosmic/karmic standing and future rebirth). This “standing” is relational and reputational within the believing community and before God — a fruit of faithful grace-empowered service, never a merit deposit earned toward one’s own salvation or a better rebirth. |
| παρρησία | parrēsia | ”boldness, confidence, freedom of speech” | Confident, unashamed access and speech, both before people and before God | ”boldness,” “confidence,” “great confidence” | Grows from faithful service — assurance and confidence flowing from a good conscience before God | ရဲရင့်သောယုံကြည်မှု (ye-yin-thaw yunkyi-hmu, “bold confidence”). Risk: Medium. Cross-reference baseline’s “assurance_of_salvation” doctrine — this is a related but distinct emphasis (confidence grown through faithful service), not to be collapsed into a claim of assurance apart from Christ. |
| πίστις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ | pistis en Christō Iēsou | ”faith [which is] in Christ Jesus” | The object and location of saving/sustaining faith | ”faith in Christ Jesus,” “faith which is in Christ Jesus” | Confirms Christ Jesus, not the office itself, as the ground of the deacon’s confidence | ခရစ်တော်ယေရှု၌ရှိသောယုံကြည်ခြင်း (Khayitto-Yayshu twin shi-thaw yunkyichin). (Baseline reuse — faith, jesus; Christ = established Myanmar Bible form ခရစ်တော်.) Risk: Critical. The object of faith must remain explicit and unambiguous per baseline’s Faith doctrine note. |
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (1:1-20)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πιστὸς ὁ λόγος | pistos ho logos | ”trustworthy is the saying” | Authentication formula (see 3:1 above) | “trustworthy saying” | Authenticates 1:15’s gospel summary | ယုံကြည်ရသောစကားဖြစ်၏. Risk: Medium. Keep identical to 3:1 rendering. |
| ἑτεροδιδασκαλέω | heterodidaskaleō | ”to teach a different/other doctrine” (heteros + didaskō) | Teaching contrary/deviant content, not merely a variant style | ”teach false doctrine,” “teach differently,” “teach contrary doctrine” | The core problem the letter addresses — doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching | မှားယွင်းစွာသွန်သင်ခြင်း (hmar-ywin-swa thunthin-chin). Risk: High. Foundational term for the whole letter; must consistently render as deviation from the one true apostolic content, not as a legitimate alternative religious teaching among many valid paths. |
| μῦθος | mythos | ”myth, fable, legend” | Fictional or speculative religious narrative presented as authoritative | ”myths,” “fables,” “tales” | Rejected as a source of true doctrine, contrasted with apostolic teaching | ဒဏ္ဌာရီစကား (dan-tayi-zagar). Risk: Medium. Common Burmese word for legendary/folkloric narrative (including nat and Buddhist jataka-style tales); useful precisely because it signals “not historically/doctrinally authoritative,” reinforcing the contrast Paul intends. |
| διδασκαλία ὑγιαίνουσα | didaskalia hygiainousa | ”healthy/sound teaching” (hygiainō, “to be healthy,” root of “hygiene”) | Doctrinally correct, spiritually healthy instruction, as opposed to diseased/false teaching | ”sound doctrine,” “healthy teaching,” “sound instruction” | The positive standard against which false teaching in ch.1 and throughout the letter is measured | ကျန်းမာသောသွန်သင်ချက် (kyan-ma-thaw thunthin-chet). Risk: High. Deliberately avoid the word တရား (“dhamma/law/teaching,” used generically for Buddhist doctrine in everyday Burmese, e.g. ဗုဒ္ဓဘာသာတရား) for “doctrine/teaching” — use သွန်သင်ချက် instead, consistent with baseline’s existing distinction between ပညတ်တရား (Mosaic Law) and Buddhist Dhamma usage of တရား. |
| συνείδησις | syneidēsis | ”conscience” (syn- “with” + eidēsis “knowing” — a co-knowing/moral self-awareness) | The inward moral faculty that approves or accuses regarding right and wrong before God | ”conscience,” “moral awareness” | A good conscience, alongside faith and love, is essential to sound doctrine (1:5,19); its ruin (4:2) accompanies false teaching | သိစိတ် (thi-seit). Risk: High. Distinguish from the Buddhist meditative faculty သတိ (sati, “mindfulness/present-moment awareness”), which is amoral, cultivatable, and oriented toward liberation from suffering rather than toward moral accountability before a personal God. Biblical syneidēsis is a moral court within the person that responds to God’s law and gospel, not a neutral attentiveness skill. |
| νόμος | nomos | ”law” | The Mosaic Law | ”the Law,” “law” | Misused by false teachers (1:7-9) as a tool of speculative teaching rather than its true convicting purpose | ပညတ်တရား. (Baseline reuse — law.) Risk: High. |
| εὐαγγέλιον | euangelion | ”good news” | The saving proclamation of Christ | ”gospel,” “good news" | "The gospel of the glory of the blessed God” (1:11) entrusted to Paul | သတင်းကောင်း. (Baseline reuse — gospel.) Risk: High. |
| διακονία | diakonia | ”service, ministry” (noun form of διάκονος/διακονέω) | The assigned work of gospel ministry given to Paul | ”ministry,” “service,” “office” | Paul’s appointment to ministry despite his former unbelief — grace-based commissioning, foundational to the doctrine of Guarding the Deposit of Faith | အမှုတော်ဆောင်ခြင်း (a-hmu-taw-saung-chin). Risk: Medium. Root shared with διάκονος/“deacon” (3:8) — keep the lexical family visibly connected in Burmese so the reader senses “deacon” and “ministry/service” as cognate concepts, as in the Greek. |
| βλάσφημος | blasphēmos | ”blasphemer, one who speaks abusively/impiously” | Paul’s former self-description | ”blasphemer,” “one who reviled” | Highlights the magnitude of grace shown to Paul | ဘုရားကိုပုတ်ခတ်ပြောသူ (Phayar-ko poke-khat-pyaw-thu, “one who reviles/slanders God”). Risk: Medium. |
| ζωὴ αἰώνιος | zōē aiōnios | ”eternal/age-abiding life” | Unending, resurrected life in fellowship with God, secured by Christ | ”eternal life,” “everlasting life” | The goal display of God’s patience toward “the chief of sinners” (1:16) | ထာဝရအသက် (htawara a-thet). Risk: High. Must not be understood as an extension of the cycle of rebirth (samsara) or as a synonym for the Buddhist “deathless” (amata) attained through one’s own practice; this is resurrection-secured, relational life with the personal God, received by grace through faith, never self-attained. |
| βασιλεῖ τῶν αἰώνων, ἀφθάρτῳ, ἀοράτῳ, μόνῳ θεῷ | basilei tōn aiōnōn, aphthartō, aoratō, monō theō | ”to the King of the ages, incorruptible, invisible, the only God” | A doxological string of divine attributes affirming eternality, indestructibility, invisibility, and exclusive uniqueness | ”King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God” | Climactic doxology (1:17) affirming the one, personal, eternal God against any rival | ကမ္ဘာအဆက်ဆက်၏ဘုရင်၊ မဖျက်ဆီးနိုင်၊ မျက်စိဖြင့်မမြင်ရ၊ တစ်ဆူတည်းသောဘုရားသခင် (kabar-a-set-set i bayin, ma-hpyet-si-nai, myet-si-hpyin ma-myin-ya, ta-hsu-tè-thaw Phayarthakhin). Risk: Critical. “The only God” (monos theos) directly confronts Burmese Buddhist cosmology’s plural hierarchy of devas, Brahmas, and nats, and any folk-syncretistic tendency to add the Christian God as one more spiritual power among many. Must be taught as strict, exclusive monotheism. |
| ἡ καλὴ στρατεία | hē kalē strateia | ”the good warfare/campaign” | Military metaphor for persevering faithfully in doctrine and ministry | ”the good warfare,” “the good fight” | Timothy is charged to “wage the good warfare” holding to faith and a good conscience (1:18) | ကောင်းသောစစ်တိုက်ခြင်း (kaung-thaw sit-taik-chin). Risk: Medium. Given Myanmar’s lived experience of literal armed conflict, this military metaphor requires a clear teaching note that it names spiritual perseverance in truth and faith, not endorsement of literal warfare or violence. |
| ναυαγέω | nauageō | ”to suffer shipwreck” | Vivid metaphor for those who have abandoned faith and a good conscience (1:19) | “shipwrecked [their faith],” “made a wreck of their faith” | Warns that abandoning conscience leads to doctrinal/spiritual ruin | သင်္ဘောပျက်ခြင်း (thinbaw-pyet-chin). Risk: Low-Medium. Vivid, well-understood image in a riverine/coastal culture; ensure the figurative sense (ruined faith) is clear, not merely literal disaster. |
| Σατανᾶς | Satanas | ”Satan” (from Hebrew satan, “adversary”) | The personal chief spiritual adversary | ”Satan” | Hymenaeus and Alexander “delivered to Satan” for discipline (1:20) | စာတန် (Sartan). Risk: Critical. See full treatment under διάβολος at 3:6-7 above; never substitute မာရ်နတ် (Mara). |
| ἔλεος | eleos | ”mercy, compassion shown to one in need/distress” | God’s compassionate action toward those undeserving of it | ”mercy” | Paired with grace and peace in the greeting (1:2) and Paul’s own testimony (“I received mercy,” 1:13,16) | ကရုဏာတော် (karuna-taw). Risk: High. ကရုဏာ (karuna) is also the precise Pali/Buddhist term for one of the four Brahmavihara (“divine abodes”) — compassion cultivated by a meditator toward suffering beings. The added honorific -တော် (marking it as God’s own attribute, following the pattern of ကျေးဇူးတော် for grace) helps distinguish it, but teaching must explicitly clarify: biblical mercy is God’s sovereign, undeserved compassionate action toward guilty sinners (as toward Paul, “formerly a blasphemer”), not a self-cultivated inner virtue-state a person attains through meditative practice. |
Chapter 2 (2:1-15)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| προσευχή | proseuchē | ”prayer” (general term) | General address to God | ”prayers,” “prayer” | First in the fourfold prayer list (2:1) opening the doctrine of Public Worship and Prayer | ဆုတောင်းခြင်း (su-taung-chin). Risk: Low. Standard, well-established Christian term. |
| δέησις | deēsis | ”supplication, petition, urgent request” | A specific, felt-need request addressed to God | ”supplications,” “petitions,” “requests” | Distinct nuance from general prayer — specific, felt need | တောင်းလျှောက်ခြင်း (taung-hlyauk-chin). Risk: Low. |
| ἔντευξις | enteuxis | ”intercession, a petition made on behalf of another/approaching [a ruler] with a request” | Praying on behalf of others, including rulers (2:1-2) | “intercessions,” “intercessory prayer” | Prayer for “all people,” including “kings and all who are in high positions” | အသနားခံခြင်း. (Baseline reuse — intercession.) Risk: Medium. |
| εὐχαριστία | eucharistia | ”thanksgiving” | Grateful acknowledgment of God’s goodness | ”thanksgivings,” “giving of thanks” | Completes the fourfold prayer pattern | ကျေးဇူးတင်ခြင်း. (Baseline reuse — thanksgiving.) Risk: Low. |
| βασιλεῖς καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐν ὑπεροχῇ ὄντες | basileis kai pantes hoi en hyperochē ontes | ”kings and all who are in a position of prominence” | Civil rulers and those holding governmental authority | ”kings and all in authority,” “rulers and all who are in high positions” | Prayer for civil authority (2:2) — sensitive in Myanmar’s political history | ဘုရင်များနှင့်အာဏာပိုင်များအားလုံး (bayin-myar hnin a-nar-pai-myar a-loun). Risk: Medium. Politically sensitive given Myanmar’s contemporary governance context; native speaker review recommended per baseline’s caution on government/authority passages (cf. Romans 13). The instruction is prayer for rulers’ benefit, not endorsement of any specific regime’s legitimacy. |
| εὐσέβεια | eusebeia | ”godliness, piety, reverent devotion toward God expressed in a life of good conduct” | Comprehensive, practical devotion to God shaping one’s whole life | ”godliness,” “piety,” “devotion” | The goal of a peaceable society (2:2) and the letter’s recurring positive ideal (also 3:16, 4:7-8, 6:3,5,6,11) — doctrine: Godliness and Contentment | ဘုရားဝတ်ကြည်ညိုမှု (hpayarwut-kyi-nyo-hmu). Risk: High. Avoid the common Burmese collocation ဘုရားတရား (“religion” in general, defaulting to Buddhism in ordinary usage) and avoid framing as merit-earning piety (offerings, precept-keeping for kutho). Biblical godliness is Spirit-enabled relational devotion flowing from grace, not merit accumulated toward a better spiritual standing. This is the single most-repeated positive term in 1 Timothy and must be rendered identically at every occurrence. |
| σωτήρ | sōtēr | ”savior, deliverer, rescuer” | One who personally accomplishes rescue for another, unable to rescue themselves | ”Savior" | "God our Savior” (2:3); reused at 1:1, 4:10 | ကယ်တင်ရှင် (kaetin-shin). Risk: Critical. Built directly on baseline’s ကယ်တင်ခြင်း (salvation). Must not be confused with the Buddha’s role as a guide/teacher who points the way to liberation which each individual must self-attain; Christ as Savior personally, actively accomplishes the rescue of those who cannot save themselves. |
| εἷς θεός, εἷς μεσίτης | heis theos, heis mesitēs | ”one God, one mediator” | Numeric exclusivity — singularity of both God and the mediating figure | ”one God, one mediator” | Central statement of Christ as the One Mediator (2:5) — doctrine: Christ as the One Mediator | တစ်ဆူတည်းသောဘုရားသခင်၊ တစ်ဦးတည်းသောကြားဝင်စေ့စပ်သူ (ta-hsu-tè-thaw Phayarthakhin, ta-oo-tè-thaw kyar-win-hsay-hsat-thu). Risk: Critical. See μεσίτης below. |
| μεσίτης | mesitēs | ”mediator, go-between, one who intervenes between two parties” | A figure who negotiates, reconciles, or bridges a relationship between two estranged parties | ”mediator,” “go-between,” “intermediary” | Christ alone bridges the gap between God and humanity — exclusive, sufficient, once-for-all | ကြားဝင်စေ့စပ်သူ (kyar-win-hsay-hsat-thu). Risk: Critical. Severe collision risk with the Burmese folk-religious practice of nat-kadaw (spirit mediums) who serve as ritual intermediaries channeling communication between humans and nat spirits, typically through trance and offerings. Must be taught explicitly and forcefully: Christ is the unique, sufficient, historical Mediator who reconciles through his own death (2:6), not a channel accessed repeatedly through ritual or trance, and not one intermediary figure among many available spiritual go-betweens. |
| ἀντίλυτρον | antilytron | ”a ransom-price paid in exchange” (anti- “in place of” + lytron “ransom”) | A substitutionary price paid to secure release | ”ransom,” “ransom payment” | Christ “gave himself as a ransom for all” (2:6) — grounds Christ’s mediatorial sufficiency in his substitutionary death | ရွေးနှင်းငွေ (ywayhnin-ngwe, “redemption price”). Risk: High. Must convey a costly, personal, substitutionary payment (Christ’s own life given in the sinner’s place), not a magical exchange, an amulet’s protective power, or an impersonal transaction. |
| μαρτύριον | martyrion | ”testimony, witness” | The gospel proclamation as evidence/testimony to what God has done | ”testimony,” “witness" | "This was testified to at the proper time” (2:6) | သက်သေခံချက် (thet-thei-khan-chet). Risk: Low. |
| καταστολή, αἰδώς, σωφροσύνη | katastolē, aidōs, sōphrosynē | ”deportment/attire,” “modesty/reverence,” “self-control/moderation” | Cluster describing modest, respectable outward dress and inward disposition (2:9) | “respectable apparel… with modesty and self-control” | Applies the leadership-qualification value of σώφρων (3:2) to the whole congregation’s worship gatherings | လျောက်ပတ်သောဝတ်စားဆင်ယင်မှု၊ အားနာမှု၊ ကိုယ်ကျင့်ချုပ်တည်းမှု (lyauk-pat-thaw wutt-sar-hsin-yin-hmu, ar-nar-hmu, ko-kyin choke-tè-hmu). Risk: Medium. Ensure this is taught as an appeal to modesty and inward character, not a rule of ritual purity or a cultural fashion code disconnected from heart disposition. |
| αὐθεντέω | authenteō | ”to exercise authority over, to domineer, to act as an autonomous master” | A rare NT word (used only here in the NT); scholarly debate over whether it denotes ordinary authority or specifically domineering/usurped authority | ”exercise authority,” “have authority over,” “domineer over” | Central to the debated instruction of 2:12 regarding women’s teaching role | အာဏာနိုင်ထက်စွာသုံးခြင်း (a-nar-nine-htet-swa thoun-chin). Risk: Critical. Rare, contested Greek word; rendering choice materially affects interpretation of church-office debates. Must be flagged for mandatory human theologian review; render conservatively/literally and do not resolve the exegetical debate through the Burmese word choice alone. |
| ἡσυχία | hēsychia | ”quietness, stillness” | Can denote either literal silence or a calm, non-disruptive demeanor | ”silence,” “quietness” | The manner of respectful learning posture urged in context (2:11-12) | တည်ငြိမ်မှု (ti-nyein-hmu, “calmness/stillness”). Risk: Medium. Context-sensitive; avoid a rendering that could be culturally weaponized to enforce total silencing of women’s voices in the church beyond the text’s actual scope — flag for native speaker review alongside αὐθεντέω. |
| ἐξαπατάω | exapatáō | ”to deceive thoroughly, to lead astray” | Complete deception, used of Eve’s deception by the serpent (2:14) | “deceived,” “was thoroughly deceived” | Grounds the created-order argument of 2:13-14 in the Genesis narrative | လှည့်ဖျားခြင်း (hlaint-pyar-chin). Risk: Low-Medium. Requires OT narrative background (Genesis 3) which may be unfamiliar to first-generation believers from a Buddhist background — flag for supplementary teaching material, consistent with the AI instructions’ note on low OT literacy among this audience segment. |
| τεκνογονία | teknogonia | ”childbearing” | The bearing of children | ”childbearing,” “bearing children" | "She will be saved through childbearing” (2:15) — a notoriously difficult verse requiring careful theological handling, not a a claim that childbirth itself saves apart from continuing in faith | သားဖွားခြင်း (thar-hpwar-chin). Risk: High. Flag for mandatory human theologian review: the verse must never be rendered in a way suggesting works-salvation through childbearing, which would directly contradict the Critical-risk Salvation and Grace doctrines already established in the baseline Language Package (ကယ်တင်ခြင်း, ကျေးဇူးတော်). |
Chapter 3 — remainder (3:14-16)
(3:1-13, the core passage, is fully treated in Part 1 above.)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| οἶκος θεοῦ | oikos theou | ”household of God” | The church as God’s family/household | ”household of God,” “God’s household,” “family of God” | Identifies the church’s nature just before the Pillar of Truth statement (3:15) | ဘုရားသခင်၏အိမ်ထောင်စု (Phayarthakhin i ain-htaung-su). Risk: Medium. Reinforces “Church as God’s People” (baseline doctrine) with familial warmth; distinguish from a monastery-affiliated lay community organized around a resident sangha. |
| ἐκκλησία θεοῦ ζῶντος | ekklēsia theou zōntos | ”church of the living God” | The church belongs to a personally living, active God, not a static or impersonal reality | ”church of the living God” | Emphasizes God’s personal aliveness against any impersonal ultimate-reality framework | အသက်ရှင်တော်မူသောဘုရားသခင်၏ အသင်းတော် (a-thet-shin-taw-mu-thaw Phayarthakhin i athin-taw). (Baseline reuse — church, god.) Risk: High. “Living God” language directly confronts any conflation of the Christian God with an impersonal cosmic order or principle (cf. baseline’s providence entry contrasting God with ကံ). |
| στῦλος καὶ ἑδραίωμα τῆς ἀληθείας | stylos kai hedraiōma tēs alētheias | ”pillar and foundation/bulwark of the truth” | The church’s role as the visible, supporting structure upholding and displaying revealed truth | ”pillar and foundation of the truth,” “pillar and buttress of the truth,” “pillar and ground of the truth” | Central statement for the doctrine “The Church as Pillar of Truth” | သစ္စာတော်၏တိုင်နှင့်အခြေခံအုတ်မြစ် (thissa-taw i tain hnin a-chay-gan oat-myit). Risk: Critical. See ἀλήθεια below; this doctrine claims the church visibly displays and upholds God’s one revealed truth in the world — must not be softened to imply merely one repository of religious teaching among others. |
| ἀλήθεια | alētheia | ”truth” | Objective, revealed reality corresponding to God’s own character and word | ”truth,” “the truth” | The content the church upholds — the gospel and sound doctrine | သစ္စာတော် (thissa-taw). Risk: High. Burmese သစ္စာ is also the term for the Buddhist “Four Noble Truths” (အရိယာသစ္စာ, Pali ariya-sacca), discovered through the Buddha’s own insight and to be personally realized through meditative practice. Must be taught as God’s own historical, personal, complete revelation in Christ and Scripture — received by revelation and faith, not a set of philosophical truths self-realized through contemplative insight. |
| τὸ τῆς εὐσεβείας μυστήριον | to tēs eusebeias mystērion | ”the mystery of godliness” | The previously hidden, now revealed content of true God-centered devotion, summarized in the Christ-hymn that follows | ”the mystery of godliness,” “the great mystery of our faith” | Introduces the Christ-hymn (3:16) as the revealed heart of godliness itself | ဘုရားဝတ်ကြည်ညိုမှု၏ နက်နဲသောအရာတော် (hpayarwut-kyi-nyo-hmu i nat-nè-thaw a-yar-taw). Risk: Critical. Combines the Critical-risk μυστήριον and High-risk εὐσέβεια terms; see both above. |
| ἐφανερώθη ἐν σαρκί | ephanerōthē en sarki | ”was manifested/revealed in flesh” | God’s Son made visibly, bodily present in true human nature | ”manifested in the flesh,” “appeared in a body,” “revealed in the flesh” | The Incarnation, expressed with the verb “manifest” rather than “became” (cf. John 1:14) | လူ့ဇာတိအဖြစ် ထင်ရှားစွာပြတော်မူခြင်း (lu-zarti a-hpyit htin-shar-swa pya-taw-mu-chin). (Baseline reuse concept — incarnation, လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း; risk unchanged.) Risk: Critical. Same forbidden substitutions apply as in baseline’s incarnation entry: never render with ဘုရားလောင်းအဖြစ်မွေးဖွားခြင်း (Jataka-style birth) or နတ်ဆင်းသက်ခြင်း (nat-spirit descent). |
| ἐδικαιώθη ἐν πνεύματι | edikaiōthē en pneumati | ”was vindicated/justified in [the] Spirit” | Here δικαιόω means Christ’s own vindication/proof of righteousness (e.g., by the Spirit’s power in his resurrection), not the sinner’s forensic justification | ”justified in the Spirit,” “vindicated by the Spirit,” “shown to be righteous by the Spirit” | Distinct referent from Romans’ justification doctrine — Christ’s own vindication, not a believer’s justification | ဝိညာဉ်တော်အားဖြင့် မှန်ကန်ကြောင်းသက်သေထူတော်မူခြင်း (weinnyin-taw arr-hpyin mankan-kyaung thet-thei-htu-taw-mu-chin). Risk: High. CAUTION: Do not mechanically reuse baseline’s full compound ဖြောင့်မတ်ရာသို့ ရောက်ခြင်း (justification of the believing sinner) here — the referent is different (Christ’s own vindication, not the sinner’s forensic acquittal from sin). Using the identical baseline phrase would blur two distinct doctrines. Flag for theologian review to confirm the distinguishing phrase is preserved. |
| ὤφθη ἀγγέλοις | ōphthē angelois | ”was seen by angels” | Christ’s post-resurrection/ascension appearance witnessed by the angelic host | ”seen by angels,” “was seen of angels” | Confirms the cosmic, not merely earthly, scope of Christ’s vindication | ကောင်းကင်တမန်တော်တို့ မြင်တွေ့ကြခြင်း (kaunggin-tamantaw-dotwe myin-twe-kya-chin). Risk: Medium. “Angel” (ἄγγελος) → ကောင်းကင်တမန်တော် (“heavenly messenger”), the established Myanmar Christian term. Must be kept distinct from နတ် (nat), the tutelary spirits of Burmese folk religion who are propitiated with offerings; angels are created, obedient servant-messengers of God, never objects of worship or ritual appeasement. |
| ἐκηρύχθη ἐν ἔθνεσιν | ekērychthē en ethnesin | ”was proclaimed/preached among the nations/Gentiles” | Public, authoritative gospel proclamation to non-Jewish peoples | ”preached among the nations,” “proclaimed among the Gentiles” | Universal scope of the gospel’s proclamation | တစ်ပါးအမျိုးသားတို့တွင် ကြေညာဟောပြောတော်မူခြင်း (tabar-amyothar-dotwin kyay-nyar-haw-pyaw-taw-mu-chin). (Baseline reuse — gentiles, gospel proclamation vocabulary.) Risk: Medium. |
| ἐπιστεύθη ἐν κόσμῳ | episteuthē en kosmō | ”was believed on in the world” | Worldwide reception of faith in Christ | ”believed on in the world,” “believed in throughout the world” | Confirms the universality doctrine already flagged Critical in the baseline (Universal Scope of the Gospel) | ကမ္ဘာတွင်ယုံကြည်ခြင်းခံရတော်မူခြင်း. (Baseline reuse — faith.) Risk: High. |
| ἀνελήμφθη ἐν δόξῃ | anelēmphthē en doxē | ”was taken up in glory” | Christ’s ascension, returning to his prior heavenly honor | ”taken up in glory,” “received up in glory,” “ascended in glory” | Christ’s ascension as vindicating return to glory, not an achieved apotheosis | ဘုန်းတော်ဖြင့်ချီတော်မူခြင်း (phontaw-hpyin chi-taw-mu-chin). (Baseline reuse — glory.) Risk: Medium. Distinguish from folk narratives of humans achieving elevated spirit/weizza status after death through esoteric practice or accumulated power; Christ’s ascension is a return to glory that was already inherently his, not an attainment. |
Chapter 4 (4:1-16)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀφίστημι τῆς πίστεως | aphistēmi tēs pisteōs | ”to depart/fall away from the faith” | Apostasy — abandoning the true, revealed faith | ”depart from the faith,” “fall away from the faith,” “abandon the faith” | Predicted apostasy “in later times” (4:1) — doctrine: Sound Doctrine versus False Teaching | ယုံကြည်ခြင်းမှ ကျဆင်းခြင်း (yun-kyi-chin hma kya-sin-chin). Risk: High. |
| πνεύματα πλάνα καὶ διδασκαλίαι δαιμονίων | pneumata plana kai didaskaliai daimoniōn | ”deceiving spirits and teachings of demons” | The ultimate spiritual source behind false doctrine | ”deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,” “seducing spirits and teachings of demons” | Identifies false teaching’s spiritual origin, not merely intellectual error | လှည့်ဖျားတတ်သောဝိညာဉ်များနှင့် နတ်ဆိုးတို့၏သွန်သင်ချက်များ (hlaint-pyar-tat-thaw weinnyin-myar hnin nat-hsoe-do i thunthin-chet-myar). Risk: Critical. Two compounding risks: (1) “ဝိညာဉ်” (spirit) alone must always carry a clear modifier here (“deceiving”) so it is never confused with, nor placed near without distinction from, သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော် (the Holy Spirit, baseline Critical term); (2) “demons” must use နတ်ဆိုး (evil spirit) and never bare နတ် (nat), the tutelary spirits venerated with offerings in Burmese folk religion — Christian teaching does not appease or venerate these beings, but identifies them as deceptive and opposed to God. |
| κωλυόντων γαμεῖν | kōlyontōn gamein | ”forbidding to marry” | Ascetic prohibition of marriage as a false-teaching marker | ”forbid marriage,” “forbidding people to marry” | One concrete symptom of the demonic false teaching in view | အိမ်ထောင်ပြုခြင်းကိုတားမြစ်ခြင်း (ain-htaung-pyu-chin-ko tar-myit-chin). Risk: Medium. Relevant given the cultural prestige of celibate monastic life in Burmese Buddhism; must be clear Paul rejects mandatory prohibition of marriage as false asceticism, not marriage itself, nor does this deny that some may rightly remain single (cf. 1 Cor 7) — flag for careful teaching note to avoid overcorrection. |
| ἀπέχεσθαι βρωμάτων | apechesthai brōmatōn | ”to abstain from foods” | Ascetic dietary restriction presented as spiritually necessary | ”abstain from foods,” “forbidding certain foods” | Second concrete symptom of the false asceticism condemned here | အစားအစာမှရှောင်ကြဉ်ခြင်း (a-sar-a-sar hma shaung-kyin-chin). Risk: Medium. Same cultural sensitivity as above — Burmese Buddhist and some folk-religious dietary abstention (e.g., meat-free days, alms-food rules for monks) is highly visible; teaching must clarify the text opposes treating abstention as spiritually obligatory/superior, not voluntary personal discipline as such. |
| γυμνάζω πρὸς εὐσέβειαν | gymnazō pros eusebeian | ”to train/exercise toward godliness” | Disciplined, athletic-metaphor training aimed at godliness | ”train yourself for godliness,” “discipline yourself for godliness” | Positive spiritual discipline, distinct from the false asceticism just condemned | ဘုရားဝတ်ကြည်ညိုမှုအတွက် လေ့ကျင့်ခြင်း (hpayarwut-kyi-nyo-hmu a-twet lay-kyin-chin). Risk: Medium. |
| ἡ σωματικὴ γυμνασία | hē sōmatikē gymnasia | ”bodily exercise/training” | Physical discipline of the body, contrasted with training for godliness | ”bodily exercise,” “physical training,” “bodily discipline" | "Profits a little,” in contrast to the surpassing profit of godliness (4:8) | ကိုယ်ကာယလေ့ကျင့်ခြင်း (ko-kaya lay-kyin-chin). Risk: Medium. Could evoke ascetic monastic austerities (fasting, physical hardship) undertaken for spiritual merit/purification; ensure the contrast (limited value of bodily discipline vs. surpassing value of godliness) is not read as wholesale condemnation of all bodily discipline, nor understood as elevating meditative/ascetic practice to salvific status by contrast. Flag for native speaker review. |
| ἐλπίζομεν ἐπὶ θεῷ ζῶντι | elpizomen epi theō zōnti | ”we have hoped/set our hope on the living God” | Confident expectation grounded in God’s active, personal reality | ”we hope in the living God,” “we have set our hope on the living God” | Grounds perseverance in ministry in confident hope, not anxious striving | အသက်ရှင်တော်မူသောဘုရားသခင်၌ မျှော်လင့်ခြင်း (a-thet-shin-taw-mu-thaw Phayarthakhin twin myaw-lin-chin). Risk: Medium. ἐλπίς (hope) → မျှော်လင့်ခြင်း; in Buddhist teaching desire/craving (tanha) is generally the root of suffering to be extinguished, so biblical “hope” must be taught as confident, God-directed expectation grounded in his promises and character, not sinful craving or anxious grasping. |
| σωτὴρ πάντων ἀνθρώπων | sōtēr pantōn anthrōpōn | ”Savior of all people” | God’s role as universal potential Savior, “especially of those who believe" | "Savior of all people,” “Savior of all men” | Extends the doctrine of universal gospel scope (baseline High-risk doctrine) with the Savior title | လူအားလုံး၏ကယ်တင်ရှင် (lu a-loun i kaetin-shin). (Reuses ကယ်တင်ရှင် coined at 2:3 above.) Risk: Critical. Preserve the qualifier “especially of those who believe” so universality of potential is not confused with universal automatic salvation. |
| τύπος | typos | ”pattern, model, example” | A living standard others should imitate | ”example,” “pattern,” “model” | Timothy’s youth is answered by exemplary conduct, not by status/seniority (4:12) | စံနမူနာ (san-nah-mu-nah). Risk: Low. |
| χάρισμα | charisma | ”gift” (grace-gift) | A Spirit-given enablement for ministry | ”gift,” “spiritual gift” | The gift given to Timothy through prophecy and the laying on of hands (4:14) | ဝိညာဉ်ဆုကျေးဇူး. (Baseline reuse — spiritual_gifts.) Risk: Medium. |
| προφητεία | prophēteia | ”prophecy” | God-inspired declaration accompanying Timothy’s commissioning | ”prophecy” | Confirms Timothy’s calling through prophetic utterance | ပရောဖက်ပြုချက်. (Baseline reuse — prophecy.) Risk: Low. |
| ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν τοῦ πρεσβυτερίου | epithesis tōn cheirōn tou presbyteriou | ”the laying on of hands of the council of elders” | A commissioning ritual performed by the collected body of elders | ”laying on of hands of the elders,” “the elders laid their hands on you” | Formal, corporate ordination/commissioning act | အသင်းတော်လူကြီးအစုအဝေး၏ လက်တင်ခြင်း (athin-taw-luji a-su-a-way i let-tin-chin). Risk: Medium. Ensure this reads as a commissioning act of blessing/recognition by the church’s leaders, not a ritual transferring magical power or merit, and is not conflated with the laying-on-of-hands healing/blessing rituals found in some folk-religious or spirit-medium practice. |
Chapter 5 (5:1-25)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πρεσβύτερος | presbyteros | ”elder” — literally “older [one]”; also the title of the recognized church office | Dual sense: (a) an older person generally (5:1-2), (b) the formal office of church elder (5:17,19) | “elder,” “older man/woman,” “presbyter” | Both senses appear within ch.5; care is needed to distinguish plain age-reference from the technical office, which the Qualifications for Church Leadership doctrine addresses alongside ἐπίσκοπος (3:1-7) | (Age sense) အသက်ကြီးသူ (a-thet-ji-thu); (Office sense) အသင်းတော်လူကြီး (athin-taw-luji). Risk: High. Distinguish the technical office sense from the Buddhist monastic seniority rank granted purely by years since ordination (e.g., a senior monk/thera); the church-office elder is qualified by demonstrated character (as in 3:1-7), not seniority alone. Flag every occurrence for context-check on which sense is active, following the same pattern baseline requires for “called”/“calling.” |
| χήρα | chēra | ”widow” | A woman whose husband has died, here specifically one without family support | ”widow” | Central figure of the doctrine “Care for Widows and the Household of Faith” | မုဆိုးမ (mu-soe-ma). Risk: Low. Well-understood, non-collision-prone Burmese word; care doctrine itself (church support, family responsibility) needs teaching emphasis, not lexical caution. |
| ταῖς ὄντως χήραις | tais ontōs chērais | ”widows who are truly/really widows” | Widows genuinely without other means of family support, as distinct from those who have family able to provide | ”widows indeed,” “those who are really widows” | Establishes the criteria for church-supported widow care (5:3,5,16) | စစ်မှန်သောမုဆိုးမ (sit-mhan-thaw mu-soe-ma). Risk: Medium. Care must be taken that the qualifying criteria (age, family support, reputation) are not read as excluding compassion, but as responsible stewardship of limited church resources. |
| οἰκεῖος | oikeios | ”member of one’s household, relative” | Extended family/household members for whom provision is a religious duty | ”his own household,” “those of his own house,” “relatives" | "If anyone does not provide for… those of his own household, he has denied the faith” (5:8) | အိမ်ထောင်စုဝင် (ain-htaung-su-win). Risk: Low-Medium. |
| ἀρνέομαι τὴν πίστιν | arneomai tēn pistin | ”to deny the faith” | A serious charge of practical apostasy through neglect of family duty | ”denied the faith,” “has renounced the faith” | Failure of familial care for widows is treated as a denial of Christian faith itself — links Godliness/Contentment and Widow-care doctrines together | ယုံကြည်ခြင်းကိုငြင်းပယ်ခြင်း (yun-kyi-chin-ko nyin-pel-chin). Risk: High. Strong language; must preserve the seriousness (equated with unbelief), not soften into mere social disapproval. |
| διπλῆ τιμή | diplē timē | ”double honor” | Honor conveyed in both respect and (by context, v.18) material/financial support | ”double honor,” “double honor and pay” | Elders who “labor in preaching and teaching” merit both esteem and material support (5:17-18) | နှစ်ဆသောဂုဏ်ပြုမှု (hnit-hsa-thaw gun-pyu-hmu). Risk: Medium. Must convey both dimensions (respect + material support), not only one; clarify this is not a merit-payment for religious service comparable to lay donations to monks for kutho, but recognition and material provision for pastoral labor performed as an act of grace-motivated ministry. |
| ἐπίθεσις χειρῶν | epithesis cheirōn | ”laying on of hands” | Commissioning/ordination ritual, here regarding caution before hasty appointment (5:22) | “laying on of hands” | Reiterates the caution against premature appointment already flagged at 3:6 (νεόφυτος) | လက်တင်ခြင်း. (Reuse from ch.4 treatment.) Risk: Medium. |
Chapter 6 (6:1-21)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| διδασκαλία ἡ κατ’ εὐσέβειαν | didaskalia hē kat’ eusebeian | ”the teaching that accords with godliness” | Sound doctrine measured by its consistency with godly living | ”teaching that accords with godliness,” “doctrine that conforms to godliness” | Reiterates the Sound Doctrine and Godliness doctrines together (6:3) | ဘုရားဝတ်ကြည်ညိုမှုနှင့်ညီညွတ်သောသွန်သင်ချက် (hpayarwut-kyi-nyo-hmu hnin nyi-nyut-thaw thunthin-chet). Risk: Medium. (Reuses established sound-doctrine and godliness renderings.) |
| αὐτάρκεια | autarkeia | ”self-sufficiency, contentment” (autos + arkeō, “to be enough”) | Inner sufficiency/satisfaction not dependent on external circumstances | ”contentment,” “self-sufficiency" | "Godliness with contentment is great gain” (6:6) — doctrine: Godliness and Contentment | ရောင့်ရဲမှု (yaung-yeh-hmu). Risk: Medium. Distinguish from Buddhist non-attachment achieved by extinguishing craving (tanha) through renunciation/meditation; biblical contentment is grateful trust in God’s provision within ongoing relationship and desire rightly ordered toward him, not the elimination of desire as such. |
| φιλαργυρία | philargyria | ”love of money” | Disordered craving for wealth as a governing life-motive | ”love of money,” “the love of money" | "The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (6:10) | ငွေကိုတပ်မက်မှု (ngwe-ko tat-met-hmu). Risk: Medium. Cross-reference ἀφιλάργυρος (3:3), a required negative qualification for overseers. |
| ῥίζα πάντων τῶν κακῶν | rhiza pantōn tōn kakōn | ”root of all the evils/evil things” | Kakos here = moral evil/wrongdoing (not existential suffering) | “root of all kinds of evil,” “root of all evil” | Diagnoses the underlying cause of many specific sins flowing from disordered love of money | အပြစ်ဆိုးအားလုံး၏အမြစ် (a-pyit-so a-loun i a-myit). Risk: High. Do NOT render “evils/κακῶν” with ဒုက္ခ (dukkha), the precise, central Buddhist term for existential “suffering” (the First Noble Truth). Using dukkha here would wrongly imply that love of money causes cosmic suffering to be escaped through detachment, rather than moral wrongdoing that offends a personal God. Use အပြစ် (baseline sin term) instead. |
| τὴν καλὴν ὁμολογίαν | tēn kalēn homologian | ”the good confession” | A public, formal acknowledgment/profession | ”the good confession,” “the good testimony” | Timothy’s own confession (6:12) and Christ’s confession before Pilate (6:13), paralleling the salvation-confession of Romans 10:9 already Critical-flagged in the baseline | ကောင်းသောဝန်ခံချက် (kaung-thaw wunkhan-chet). Risk: High. New term ὁμολογία (homologia, “confession, acknowledgment”) → ဝန်ခံခြင်း; keep consistent with the baseline’s rendering of the Romans 10:9 confession (ယေရှုသည် သခင်ဖြစ်တော်မူ၏) as the theological anchor for “confession” vocabulary throughout the Language Package. |
| ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων | ho basileus tōn basileuontōn kai kyrios tōn kyrieuontōn | ”the King of those who reign as kings and Lord of those who rule as lords” | Supreme title asserting Christ’s absolute sovereignty over every other ruler | ”King of kings and Lord of lords” | Climactic doxological title (6:15) — reinforces the Critical-risk Lordship of Christ doctrine from the baseline | ဘုရင်တို့၏ဘုရင်၊ သခင်တို့၏သခင် (bayin-do i bayin, thakhin-do i thakhin). (Reuses baseline — lord/သခင်; king/ဘုရင် is a plain, low-risk word here used only as part of this compound title.) Risk: High. Must be taught as relativizing and exceeding all earthly kingship — including any historical or cultural memory of divine-kingship ideology (e.g., a monarch as “dhammaraja,” a righteous Buddhist ruler) — not as legitimizing any specific earthly ruler’s authority by association. |
| μόνος ἔχων ἀθανασίαν | monos echōn athanasian | ”alone possessing immortality/deathlessness” | God’s inherent, uncreated, non-derived eternal life | ”who alone has immortality,” “the only one who is immortal” | Distinct word (athanasia, “deathlessness”) from ἄφθαρτος (1:17); emphasizes God’s unique self-existent eternality | မသေနိုင်ခြင်းကိုတစ်ဆူတည်းပိုင်ဆိုင်တော်မူသော (ma-thei-nai-chin-ko ta-hsu-tè paing-hsaing-taw-mu-thaw). Risk: Critical. The concept of “the deathless” (Pali amata) is itself the classical Buddhist epithet for Nibbana/Nirvana, the goal attained by the enlightened through the Noble Eightfold Path. Must be explicitly and forcefully taught: God ALONE possesses immortality as uncreated Creator by his very nature — this is never an attainment reached through practice, meditation, or self-effort, in direct contrast to the Buddhist soteriological goal of “reaching the deathless.” |
| πλουτεῖν ἐν ἔργοις καλοῖς | ploutein en ergois kalois | ”to be rich in good works” | Generous, tangible good deeds flowing from grace-given resources | ”rich in good works,” “rich in good deeds” | Instruction to the wealthy (6:18), paralleling the “good work” of 3:1 | ကောင်းမှုအကျင့်၌ချမ်းသာသော (kaung-hmu-a-kyin twin chan-thar-thaw). Risk: High. “Good works” (ἔργα καλά) must never be rendered with ကုသိုလ် (merit); these are deeds flowing from grace already received, not deeds performed to accumulate merit or improve one’s cosmic/karmic standing. |
| τὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον | tēn parathēkēn phylaxon | ”guard the deposit!” | An entrusted treasure/deposit placed in someone’s trust for safekeeping, to be returned unchanged | ”guard the deposit,” “guard what has been entrusted to you,” “keep safe what has been committed to your trust” | Climactic charge of the letter (6:20) — doctrine: Guarding the Deposit of Faith | ပေးအပ်ထားသောအရာကို ထိန်းသိမ်းလော့ (pay-at-htar-thaw a-yar-ko htein-thein-lo). Risk: High. Must not be understood through the lens of the Burmese Buddhist lay-piety metaphor of a growing “merit account” (ကုသိုလ်ငွေစုသိမ်း-style folk expressions of merit being “banked” or “stored up”). Parathēkē here is a fixed, complete apostolic content (sound doctrine, “the faith”) entrusted once for safekeeping and transmission unchanged — not a treasury that grows through one’s own accumulated deeds. |
| ψευδώνυμος γνῶσις | pseudōnymos gnōsis | ”falsely-named/so-called knowledge” | A speculative, proto-Gnostic teaching wrongly claiming the prestige of true knowledge | ”what is falsely called knowledge,” “so-called knowledge,” “pseudo-knowledge” | Names the specific false teaching Timothy must guard the deposit against (6:20) | အမည်ခံဉာဏ်ပညာ (a-myi-khan nyan-pyinnya). Risk: Critical. ဉာဏ် (nyan, from Pali ñāṇa) is the precise Buddhist technical term for liberating insight-wisdom (vipassanā-ñāṇa/paññā) attained through meditation — the very goal of the Buddhist path. Even used negatively here (“false gnosis”), this risks readers assuming Christianity dismisses ဉာဏ်ပညာ (wisdom/insight) as such, or conversely elevates a rival gnosis-path. A mandatory translator note must clarify: Paul rejects one specific speculative false teaching (a proto-Gnostic system), not the pursuit of wisdom or knowledge generally, which Scripture elsewhere commends. Flag for theologian review. |
| βέβηλοι κενοφωνίαι | bebēlai kenophōniai | ”profane/irreligious empty talk” | Worthless, spiritually vacuous chatter presented as significant teaching | ”profane babblings,” “empty chatter,” “worthless talk” | Rejected alongside false gnosis as unworthy of Timothy’s attention (6:20) | အနှစ်သာရမရှိသော မသန့်ရှင်းသောစကားများ (a-nhit-thayar-ma-shi-thaw ma-thangyin-thaw zagar-myar). Risk: Medium. Draws on baseline’s “holy”/သန့်ရှင်းသော term family for contrast (profane = “not-holy”); keep this negation clearly linked to that established term. |
Cross-Book Consistency Notes
- All terms already fixed in the Romans-derived baseline (faith, grace, righteousness, salvation, church, God, Jesus, Lord, Holy Spirit, gospel, law, sin, holy, saints, sanctification, thanksgiving, intercession, spiritual gifts, gentiles, glory, prophecy) are reused exactly throughout 1 Timothy with no variation.
- New terms proposed above must be added to translation memory before Phase 2 segment translation begins (see
08_core_glossary.md). - Terms tied to Critical-risk doctrines in this book (mediator, only-God/monotheism, Savior, deposit-of-faith-adjacent mystery/gnosis terms, immortality/athanasia, deceiving spirits/demons, Satan/devil) require the same mandatory human theologian review routing established in
doctrine_risk_registry.json.
