09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Revelation 1–22
Full-Book Coverage | OT Quotations, Allusions, Messianic Typology, and Romans Parallels
Method and Scope
Revelation is the most OT-saturated book in the New Testament by allusion density, yet it contains almost no formal introductory citation formulas (“as it is written,” “the Scripture says”) of the kind common in Romans. Its OT connections are woven into the fabric of its visionary language itself. This creates a distinct translation-sensitivity profile from Romans: the theological weight often rides on imagery recognition, not on a quoted clause, so mistranslating an image (dragon, sea, harlot, lamb) can sever the OT connection invisibly, without any citation marker alerting a reviewer.
This document proceeds chapter by chapter, first to last, cataloguing every load-bearing OT quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every direct parallel to the Romans curriculum already delivered in this language package. No chapter is skipped; chapters with sparse independent allusion (e.g., ch. 10) are noted explicitly as reviewed.
Citations are normalized in “Book Chapter:Verse” style (e.g., “Genesis 15:6”, “Isaiah 65:17”, “Galatians 2:16”) for machine consistency across Phase 2 tooling, regardless of the print-edition numeral convention used in the final Myanmar text (Myanmar numerals in print; Arabic numerals in the working segment cache, per the baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md §Cross-Reference Preservation Rules).
Part 0 — Extended Book-Name Citation Table (Burmese Bible Society Convention)
The Romans baseline package fixed book names for Romans, Genesis, Psalms, Isaiah, Habakkuk, and Joel. Revelation’s OT allusion range requires the following additional standard Myanmar Bible book names, extending (not contradicting) that table. Native-speaker/theologian review should confirm exact orthography against the current Myanmar Standard Bible print edition before Phase 2 lock-in.

Part 1 — Chapter-by-Chapter Cross-Reference Matrix
Chapter 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 1:7 | Return and Reign of Christ | Christ, “every tribe” | Daniel 7:13 (“coming with the clouds”); Zechariah 12:10 (“they will look on him whom they pierced”) | Combines two distinct OT texts into one composite messianic statement; must not be flattened into a single generic “he is coming” line — the piercing/mourning clause (Zechariah 12:10) carries specific messianic-suffering freight that must survive translation. |
| Revelation 1:8, 1:17 | Sovereignty of God over History; Deity of Christ | God; Christ | Exodus 3:14 (divine self-naming); Isaiah 41:4, 44:6, 48:12 (“I am the first and the last”) | The same OT self-designation of YHWH is applied to Christ in 1:17-18 and again at 22:13 — a deliberate assertion of Christ’s full deity. Must render identically at every occurrence (see Part 3, Rule R1). |
| Revelation 1:12-16 | Deity of Christ; Return and Reign | Christ (“Son of Man”) | Daniel 7:9,13; Ezekiel 1:26-28; Daniel 10:5-6 | Composite vision drawing on Daniel’s Ancient of Days AND Son of Man imagery simultaneously applied to one figure (Christ) — a strong implicit deity claim; translator notes should flag that Christ here bears attributes elsewhere reserved for God himself. |
| Revelation 1:5-6 | Worship of the Lamb; Church’s priestly identity | Christ; believers | Exodus 19:6 (“a kingdom of priests”); reuse baseline kingdom_of_god | Direct forerunner of Rev 5:10, 20:6; establishes the corporate royal-priesthood motif carried through the whole book. |
Chapters 2–3 (Letters to the Seven Churches)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 2:7 | New Heaven and New Earth (anticipated) | — | Genesis 2:9; 3:22-24 (tree of life, Eden access denied) | First mention of the tree-of-life restoration motif completed at Revelation 22:2,14; must render ξύλον τῆς ζωῆς identically at all four occurrences (2:7; 22:2,14,19). |
| Revelation 2:17 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness | Overcomer | Exodus 16:1-36 (manna) | Hidden manna symbol; requires interpretive note rather than a literal-food reading (Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine). |
| Revelation 2:26-27; 12:5 | Return and Reign of Christ | Christ; overcomer | Psalm 2:8-9 (the Messiah’s rod of iron over the nations) | Messianic psalm applied first to Christ (12:5) then extended to overcoming believers (2:26-27) — the shared-rule motif must be rendered with identical vocabulary at both points to preserve the theological link. |
| Revelation 3:5; 3:12 | Judgment/Vindication; New Heaven and New Earth | Overcomer | Exodus 32:32-33; Daniel 12:1 (book of life); Isaiah 62:1-4 (new name, restored city) | First mentions of “book of life” and “new Jerusalem,” both completed in chs. 20-21; must render consistently with those later occurrences. |
| Revelation 3:7 | Return and Reign of Christ; Messianic Promise | Christ | Isaiah 22:22 (key of the house of David) | Reuse baseline david term; establishes Christ’s exclusive authority over entrance to God’s kingdom, later echoed in the New Jerusalem’s open/shut gates (21:25-27). |
| Revelation 3:14 | Sovereignty of God over History | Christ (“Amen, faithful and true witness”) | Isaiah 65:16 (God as “the Amen”) | Same “faithful and true” language reused of God’s throne-voice at 21:5 and of the returning Christ at 19:11 — a three-point chain that must render with one consistent Burmese phrase throughout (see Rule R2). |
| Revelation 3:19 | Perseverance | — | Proverbs 3:11-12 (the Lord disciplines those he loves) | Low sensitivity; standard wisdom-literature allusion. |
Chapter 4
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 4:2-3, 6-8 | Sovereignty of God over History; Worship of the Lamb | God; four living creatures | Ezekiel 1:4-28 (throne-chariot vision); Isaiah 6:1-3 (seraphim, thrice-holy) | Composite throne-room vision; the four living creatures merge Ezekiel’s four-faced creatures with Isaiah’s seraphim — must be taught as one unified worship-scene, not two competing images. |
| Revelation 4:8 | Worship of the Lamb | Living creatures | Isaiah 6:3 (“Holy, holy, holy”) | Reuse baseline holy exactly (see Rule R3); triple repetition must be preserved as a fixed liturgical unit, not paraphrased into a single adjective. |
| Revelation 4:3 | Sovereignty of God over History | God | Genesis 9:12-17 (rainbow as covenant sign) | The rainbow around the throne signals covenant faithfulness undergirding all coming judgment; low lexical risk, moderate teaching-note value. |
Chapter 5
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 5:5 | Messianic Promise; Davidic Covenant | Christ | Genesis 49:9-10 (Lion of Judah); Isaiah 11:1,10 (Root of David) | Two distinct OT messianic-lineage texts fused into one title; reuse baseline david/messiah; must render as one composite title, not two separate unrelated images. |
| Revelation 5:6,9,12 | Worship of the Lamb; Atonement | Christ (Lamb) | Isaiah 53:7 (silent lamb led to slaughter); Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb); Genesis 22:8 (God will provide the lamb) | The single most important typological convergence in the book: Suffering Servant + Passover deliverance + Isaac’s near-sacrifice all converge on the slain Lamb. Every occurrence of ἀρνίον must retain this three-stranded sacrificial background; see also Section D of 08_core_glossary.md. |
| Revelation 5:9 | New Song; Worship of the Lamb | — | Psalm 33:3; 96:1; 98:1 (“sing a new song”) | Standard worship-psalm formula reapplied to the Lamb’s unprecedented redemptive act. |
| Revelation 5:9-10 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles (Romans parallel) | Redeemed multitude | Daniel 7:14 (“all peoples, nations, and languages”) | Directly parallels Romans 3:29-30, 10:12 unity-of-all-peoples language; see Part 3 Rule R4. |
Chapter 6
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 6:1-8 | Sovereignty of God over History; Judgment | Four horsemen | Zechariah 1:8-11; 6:1-8 (symbolic colored horses as divine agents) | Apocalyptic-symbolic imagery; requires an explicit interpretive note (Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine) so the four horses are not read as literal end-time cavalry. |
| Revelation 6:10 | Vindication of the Saints | Martyrs’ souls | Psalm 79:5,10; Zechariah 1:12 (“How long, O Lord?”) | Standard lament-psalm cry now placed in the mouths of the martyred; ties directly to Romans-baseline intercession framework — prayer addressed directly to God, not to intermediary spirits. |
| Revelation 6:12-14 | Judgment of the Wicked | — | Isaiah 34:4 (stars falling); Hosea 10:8; Isaiah 2:10-21 (mountains/rocks, hiding from God’s wrath) | Stock “Day of the LORD” cosmic-collapse imagery; symbolic, not a literal astronomy claim. |
Chapter 7
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 7:2-4 | Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | 144,000 | Ezekiel 9:4-6 (mark placed on the foreheads of the faithful before judgment falls) | Direct positive-contrast typology with the beast’s mark (ch. 13); God’s sealing precedes and protects against coming judgment exactly as in Ezekiel. |
| Revelation 7:9 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles; Universal Scope of the Gospel (Romans parallel) | Great multitude | Daniel 7:14 (again); cf. Genesis 12:3 (all nations blessed through Abraham) | Same universality theme as Romans 1:16, 3:29-30, 10:12-13; must retain fully unqualified “every nation, tribe, people, language” scope (Rule R4). |
| Revelation 7:9,14 | Vindication of the Saints; Righteousness (Romans parallel) | Great multitude | Isaiah 61:10 (garments of righteousness); reuse baseline righteousness | The white-robe purity is explicitly “washed in the blood of the Lamb” (7:14) — a granted, not self-achieved, righteousness; must be rendered consistently with Romans 3:24, 4:3 imputed-righteousness framing. |
| Revelation 7:16-17 | New Heaven and New Earth (anticipated) | Lamb as shepherd | Psalm 23:1-2; Isaiah 49:10; Ezekiel 34:23 | Shepherd imagery reused at 21:4’s tear-wiping promise (Isaiah 25:8); establishes continuity between 7:17 and 21:4. |
Chapters 8–9 (Trumpet Judgments)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 8:7-12; 9:1-11 | Judgment of the Wicked; Sovereignty of God over History | — | Exodus 7:20-21 (water to blood); 9:23-24 (hail and fire); 10:21-23 (darkness); 10:12-15 and Joel 2:1-11 (locusts) | The trumpet sequence deliberately recapitulates the Exodus plague cycle. This typological pattern (a second, escalated “Exodus judgment”) must be preserved through consistent teaching notes, since Burmese readers unfamiliar with the Exodus narrative will not recognize the pattern from the Burmese text alone — requires supplementary catechetical material, not a translation adjustment. |
| Revelation 9:1-2,11 | Cosmic Conflict; Sovereignty of God over History | Apollyon; abyss | Isaiah 14:15; Ezekiel 31:15-16 (descent to the pit) | See baseline glossary term “Abyss” (B46); must remain distinct from ငရဲ. |
| Revelation 8:3-4 | Prayer and Intercession (Romans parallel) | Saints | Psalm 141:2 (prayer as incense) | Directly parallels Romans-baseline intercession entry; prayers received directly by God, not through ritual incense-merit offering. |
Chapter 10
Reviewed. Chapter 10 introduces no independent load-bearing OT quotation beyond the already-catalogued Ezekiel 2:8–3:3 “eat the scroll” typology (see 07_semantic_analysis.md ch.10) and a general allusion to Daniel 12:7’s prophetic oath formula (“there would be no more delay”). No new cross-curriculum parallel or additional collision risk beyond what is already documented.
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 10:9-10 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness | John | Ezekiel 2:8–3:3 (eating the scroll) | Prophetic commissioning typology; sweetness/bitterness of receiving and proclaiming God’s word. |
| Revelation 10:6-7 | Sovereignty of God over History | Angel | Daniel 12:7 (“there would be no more delay”) | Low independent risk; reinforces certainty of God’s timetable. |
Chapter 11
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 11:3-6 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness | Two witnesses | Zechariah 4:2-14 (two olive trees/lampstands); Exodus 7:14-24 (water to blood, Moses); 1 Kings 17:1 (Elijah, no rain) | The two witnesses are a composite Moses/Elijah typology; must be taught as embodying the church’s own prophetic calling to costly testimony, per Romans-baseline obedience_of_faith extension. |
| Revelation 11:7-12 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness; Resurrection (Romans parallel) | Two witnesses; beast | — (typological pattern, not direct OT quotation) | Death-then-resurrection-vindication pattern; must reuse baseline resurrection term ထမြောက်ခြင်း exactly; this is the paradigmatic pattern for Revelation’s whole theology of martyrdom. |
| Revelation 11:15-18 | Return and Reign of Christ; Sovereignty of God over History | — | Psalm 2:1-2 (“the nations were angry”); Exodus 15:18 (“The Lord will reign forever”) | Direct quotation-echo of the royal messianic Psalm 2 already active at 12:5 and 19:15; must render “reign” (βασιλεύω) consistently across all three passages. |
| Revelation 11:19 | Sovereignty of God over History | — | Exodus 25:10-22 (ark of the covenant) | Reuse baseline covenant term; the ark’s appearance signals God’s covenant faithfulness undergirding the judgment scenes that follow. |
Chapter 12
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 12:1 | Church as Bride of Christ (background); Sovereignty of God over History | Woman | Genesis 37:9-10 (Joseph’s dream: sun, moon, stars) | Symbolic figure for the covenant people; must not be read as an individual literal woman. |
| Revelation 12:9,17 | Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil; Cosmic Conflict | Dragon/Satan | Genesis 3:1,14-15 (the serpent; enmity between the serpent and the woman’s offspring) | This is the single most important typological thread in the whole book: Revelation 12 is the direct fulfillment of the Genesis 3:15 “protoevangelium” — the serpent’s defeat by the woman’s offspring. The Burmese rendering of “dragon” (နဂါး) and “serpent” (ရှေးဟောင်းမြွေ) must be anchored explicitly to Genesis 3, both to secure the typology and to guard against confusion with the venerated naga-serpent tradition (see 08_core_glossary.md B3–B4). Mandatory theologian review. |
| Revelation 12:5 | Return and Reign of Christ; Messianic Promise | Male child (Christ) | Psalm 2:9 (rod of iron); Isaiah 66:7 (birth imagery for deliverance) | See 11:15-18 above; consistent “rod of iron” rendering required. |
| Revelation 12:11 | Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil; Perseverance | Believers | — (NT theological synthesis, cf. Romans 8:37) | “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony” is the book’s own summary doctrine of victory; must be cross-referenced with Romans 8:37’s “more than conquerors” — the shared verb-family (νικάω) requires consistent root rendering (see Rule R5). |
Chapter 13
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 13:1-2 | Judgment of the Wicked; Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | Beast from the sea | Daniel 7:2-7 (four beasts: lion, bear, leopard composited into one) | Revelation’s beast deliberately combines all four of Daniel’s beasts into a single, final, worse antichrist figure; this compression must be taught explicitly as intentional escalation, not an inconsistency. |
| Revelation 13:5-7 | Judgment of the Wicked | Beast | Daniel 7:8,20,25 (ten horns; boastful mouth; “given authority” for “a time, times, and half a time”) | The 42-months/“time, times, half a time” figure is the same symbolic period as Daniel’s, confirming Revelation 13 as Daniel 7’s fulfillment/escalation; requires a shared interpretive note across both books. |
| Revelation 13:11-15 | Worship of the Lamb (by contrast); Judgment | Second beast (false prophet) | — (no direct OT citation; theological parody of true prophetic authority) | The beast’s demand for worship of its image directly parodies and inverts the worship due to God/Lamb (chs. 4-5); this contrast, not any single OT text, is the key interpretive anchor. |
Chapter 14
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 14:4 | Vindication of the Saints | 144,000 | Exodus 23:19; Deuteronomy 26:1-11 (firstfruits offering) | Firstfruits typology: the redeemed are the guaranteed first portion of the full end-time harvest. |
| Revelation 14:6-7 | Gospel (Romans parallel); Sovereignty of God over History | Angel | — (NT synthesis) | “Eternal gospel” directly reuses baseline gospel term; must be qualified consistently with the Romans-baseline note that this is the one, unique, unchanging announcement of salvation through Christ, never a generic positive message. |
| Revelation 14:14-20 | Judgment of the Wicked | Christ (Son of Man reaper) | Joel 3:13 (harvest/sickle ripe for judgment); Isaiah 63:1-6 (winepress of wrath, blood on garments) | Composite harvest-and-winepress judgment imagery, directly reused again in 19:13,15; must render consistently across both passages. |
Chapter 15
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 15:3-4 | Worship of the Lamb; Sovereignty of God over History | Overcomers | Exodus 15:1-18 (Song of Moses); Deuteronomy 32:4 (“just and true are his ways”) | The Exodus deliverance song is explicitly fused with “the song of the Lamb” — establishing the Lamb’s redemption as the greater, final Exodus; reuse baseline moses naming convention. |
| Revelation 15:8 | Sovereignty of God over History | — | Exodus 40:34-35; 1 Kings 8:10-11 (glory-cloud filling the sanctuary) | Standard theophany-glory motif; reuse baseline glory term. |
Chapter 16
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 16:1-11 | Judgment of the Wicked | — | Exodus 7-10 (Egyptian plagues: blood, sores, darkness) | Second, final recapitulation of the Exodus-plague pattern (see chs. 8-9), now complete and unmitigated; the escalation from partial (trumpets) to total (bowls) judgment should be preserved in teaching notes. |
| Revelation 16:12 | Judgment of the Wicked; Sovereignty of God over History | — | Isaiah 11:15; Jeremiah 50:38 (drying up of the Euphrates, associated with Babylon’s fall to Cyrus) | Historical Babylon-conquest imagery reapplied to end-time Babylon’s fall (chs. 17-18). |
| Revelation 16:16 | Return and Reign of Christ; Judgment of the Wicked | — | Judges 5:19; 2 Kings 23:29 (Megiddo as a historic site of decisive battle/national calamity) | “Armageddon” (Har-Megiddo) is a symbolic name evoking historic decisive-battle associations, not a modern geographic prediction; requires an interpretive note per the Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine. |
Chapters 17–18 (Babylon)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 17:1-5 | Church as Bride of Christ (by contrast); Judgment of the Wicked | The harlot | Ezekiel 16:15-41; 23:1-49 (Israel/Samaria/Jerusalem as unfaithful “wife” turned harlot); Nahum 3:4 (Nineveh as harlot) | The harlot is the direct theological opposite-number of the Bride (19:7-9; 21:2,9); this contrast must be reinforced in teaching notes precisely because both figures are women in the source imagery — translators must ensure the Burmese rendering keeps them visibly, structurally distinct (see 07_semantic_analysis.md ch.17 note). |
| Revelation 18:2 | Judgment of the Wicked | — | Isaiah 21:9; Jeremiah 51:8 (“Fallen, fallen is Babylon”) | Direct quotation-echo; the doubled verb (“fallen, fallen”) is a fixed prophetic lament formula and should be preserved as a repetition, not smoothed into a single verb. |
| Revelation 18:4 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness | — | Jeremiah 51:45; 50:8; Isaiah 48:20 (“Come out of her, my people”) | Direct call-to-separation quotation; must retain the urgency and the covenantal “my people” address (reuse baseline called framework contextually). |
| Revelation 18:6 | Judgment of the Wicked | — | Jeremiah 50:15,29; Psalm 137:8 (“pay her back double”) | Lex talionis judgment-formula; requires careful framing so it is understood as God’s own perfect justice, not a license for human vengeance (cf. Romans 12:19, outside this curriculum but doctrinally consonant). |
| Revelation 18:11-19 | Judgment of the Wicked | Merchants, kings | Ezekiel 27:12-36 (lament over Tyre’s trade goods); Isaiah 23:1-18 | Extended commercial-lament typology directly modeled on Ezekiel’s dirge over Tyre; low lexical risk, moderate need for a cultural-context teaching note on ancient Mediterranean trade goods. |
Chapter 19
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 19:1-6 | Worship of the Lamb; Judgment of the Wicked | Heavenly worshipers | Psalm 104:35; 106:1 (Hallelujah refrain) | Reuse baseline transliteration ဟာလေလုယ exactly. |
| Revelation 19:7-9 | Church as Bride of Christ (central doctrine) | Bride; Lamb | Isaiah 54:5; 61:10; 62:5; Hosea 2:19-20 (God/the LORD as bridegroom to his covenant people) | This is the culmination of the entire OT marriage-covenant metaphor; the “righteous acts of the saints” (19:8) as wedding garments must be rendered consistently with Romans 4’s imputed_righteousness — granted, not self-woven. |
| Revelation 19:11-13 | Return and Reign of Christ; Sovereignty of God over History | Christ (rider) | Isaiah 11:1-5 (messianic warrior-judge); Isaiah 63:1-3 (blood-dipped robe from treading the winepress alone) | Must be explicitly distinguished in teaching from the unrelated first-seal “white horse” of 6:2 (see 08_core_glossary.md B80); same color/animal, opposite referent. |
| Revelation 19:15-16 | Return and Reign of Christ; Lordship of Christ (Romans parallel) | Christ | Psalm 2:9 (rod of iron); Isaiah 11:4 (rod of his mouth); Daniel 2:47; Deuteronomy 10:17 (“God of gods and Lord of lords”) | “King of kings and Lord of lords” directly echoes Deuteronomy 10:17’s “God of gods and Lord of lords” applied to YHWH, now applied to Christ — a strong deity assertion; must reuse baseline lord (သခင်) as the compound’s root exactly, per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md Lordship rule. |
| Revelation 19:17-18 | Judgment of the Wicked | — | Ezekiel 39:17-20 (“supper” of birds feasting on the defeated) | Grim ironic parody of the marriage supper of the Lamb (19:9); the deliberate double use of “supper” (δεῖπνον) for both the wedding feast and this judgment scene must be preserved as an intentional literary contrast, not smoothed into two unrelated words. |
Chapter 20
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 20:1-3 | Sovereignty of God over History; Assurance of Final Victory over Evil | Satan | Isaiah 24:21-22 (the host of heaven and earthly kings shut up in a prison/pit) | Establishes that Satan’s binding is entirely within God’s sovereign timing and limit, not a contest of equal powers. |
| Revelation 20:8 | Judgment of the Wicked | Gog and Magog | Ezekiel 38:1–39:20 (Gog of Magog’s final assault and defeat) | Historical/prophetic names reused symbolically for the final, futile rebellion of all nations; requires an interpretive note distinguishing symbolic reuse from a literal ancient-nation identification. |
| Revelation 20:11-13 | Judgment of the Wicked; Vindication of the Saints | God (judge) | Daniel 7:9-10 (thrones set, books opened); Daniel 12:1-2 (book, resurrection to life or shame); Isaiah 26:19 | Direct typological fulfillment of Daniel’s judgment-scene visions; must retain a personal divine Judge rendering a real verdict, not an impersonal accounting process (cf. Romans-baseline providence caution against ကံ). |
| Revelation 20:14-15 | Judgment of the Wicked (Critical) | — | — (NT culmination; no single OT verse, but fulfills the “second death” trajectory anticipated across the prophets’ Day-of-the-LORD language) | Must reuse baseline-extended term ဒုတိယသေခြင်း exactly, consistent with 2:11 and 21:8. |
Chapter 21 (vv. 1–8, core passage, plus vv. 9–27)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 21:1 | New Heaven and New Earth (central doctrine) | — | Isaiah 65:17; 66:22 (“new heavens and a new earth”) | Direct quotation-level allusion; must be taught as the deliberate fulfillment of Isaiah’s promise, reinforcing the “qualitatively new, non-cyclical” sense of καινός already flagged in 07_semantic_analysis.md. |
| Revelation 21:1 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Isaiah 51:9-10 (the sea as a symbol of primeval chaos, subdued by God at creation and exodus) | “No more sea” completes a canonical arc from Genesis 1:2’s chaotic deep, through the Exodus sea-crossing, to its final, total removal. |
| Revelation 21:2 | New Heaven and New Earth; Church as Bride of Christ | New Jerusalem | Isaiah 52:1 (“holy city”); Ezekiel 40:1–48:35 (vision of a restored city/temple); Isaiah 61:10 (bride’s adornment) | The New Jerusalem descending is the direct fulfillment of Ezekiel’s extended restored-temple-city vision; the “bride” imagery specifically completes Isaiah 61:10 and 62:5’s bridal metaphor. |
| Revelation 21:3 | Sovereignty of God over History; New Heaven and New Earth | God | Leviticus 26:11-12; Exodus 29:45; Ezekiel 37:27; Zechariah 2:10-11 (the fixed covenant formula, “I will dwell among them, and they will be my people”) | This is the OT’s oldest and most repeated covenant-presence formula, reaching its final fulfillment here; must render “his people” (λαοὶ) and “dwell” (σκηνώσει) so as to visibly echo this formula’s prior canonical occurrences in any cross-reference materials. |
| Revelation 21:4 | Vindication of the Saints; New Heaven and New Earth | — | Isaiah 25:8 (“he will wipe away the tears”); Isaiah 35:10; 65:19 (no more weeping) | Direct quotation-level allusion; ties Revelation 21:4 and Revelation 7:17 together as the same promise given in anticipation and then in fulfillment — must render “wipe away every tear” identically at both points. |
| Revelation 21:5 | Sovereignty of God over History; New Heaven and New Earth | God | Isaiah 43:19 (“I am making a way… I am doing a new thing”) | Direct echo of Isaiah’s “new thing” language, now declared complete and total (“all things new”). |
| Revelation 21:6 | Grace (Romans parallel, Critical) | God | Isaiah 55:1 (“come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost”) | See Part 3 Rule R1 below — δωρεάν here must match the Romans-curriculum treatment of unmerited grace exactly. |
| Revelation 21:7 | Adoption into God’s Family (Romans parallel) | Overcomer | 2 Samuel 7:14 (“I will be his father, and he will be my son” — the Davidic covenant sonship formula) | Direct reuse of the Davidic covenant formula, now extended to every overcoming believer; must be distinguished from Christ’s own unique Sonship (baseline son_of_god, Critical) exactly as flagged in 07_semantic_analysis.md. |
| Revelation 21:8 | Judgment of the Wicked (Critical) | — | (Synthesizes multiple OT vice-lists, e.g., Deuteronomy 18:10-12 on sorcery; Exodus 20:1-17 commandments against murder, adultery, idolatry) | The vice list echoes, and finally judges violations of, the Decalogue and covenant law; should be taught with that legal background rather than as an arbitrary list. |
| Revelation 21:11-21 | New Heaven and New Earth; Church as Bride of Christ | New Jerusalem | Isaiah 54:11-12 (jeweled foundations); Ezekiel 40–48 (measured city); Isaiah 60:1-3,11 (nations bring their glory; gates never shut) | Extended architectural fulfillment of Ezekiel’s temple-city vision and Isaiah’s glorified-Zion oracle. |
| Revelation 21:22-23 | Worship of the Lamb; New Heaven and New Earth | God, Lamb | Ezekiel 37:26-28; Isaiah 60:19-20 (“the LORD will be your everlasting light”) | “I saw no temple” is not an absence but a fulfillment — direct, unmediated presence replaces every prior symbol; reuse baseline glory term. |
| Revelation 21:24-26 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles; Universal Scope of the Gospel (Romans parallel) | Nations | Isaiah 60:3,5,11 (nations streaming to Zion’s light, bringing their wealth) | Same universal-ingathering theme as Romans 11:11-12,25 and 15:8-12; must retain full, unqualified inclusion of “the nations” (Rule R4). |
Chapter 22
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Revelation 22:1-2 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Ezekiel 47:1-12 (river flowing from the temple, trees for healing); Genesis 2:9-10 (Eden’s river and tree); Zechariah 14:8 (living waters flowing from Jerusalem) | Triple OT convergence (Eden restored + temple-river + Zechariah’s eschatological spring); the tree of life here completes the arc begun at Genesis 3:22-24 and reopened at Revelation 2:7. |
| Revelation 22:3 | New Heaven and New Earth; Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil | — | Genesis 3:17-19 (the ground cursed); Zechariah 14:11 (“never again will there be a curse”) | Direct, explicit reversal of the Genesis Fall-curse; must be taught with that specific canonical bookend (Genesis 3 → Revelation 22) made visible in teaching notes. |
| Revelation 22:4 | Worship of the Lamb; New Heaven and New Earth | Servants of God | Exodus 33:20 (“no one may see my face and live”); Psalm 17:15; Numbers 6:25-26 (priestly blessing, “the LORD make his face shine upon you”) | A deliberate, climactic reversal: what was forbidden to Moses is now granted permanently to every redeemed servant. This contrast (Exodus 33:20 vs. Revelation 22:4) is one of the most theologically significant single cross-references in the entire book and must be preserved in teaching notes even though it involves no shared vocabulary to translate. |
| Revelation 22:5 | New Heaven and New Earth | — | Zechariah 14:7; Isaiah 60:19-20 (no more night; the LORD himself as light) | Reuse baseline glory framework. |
| Revelation 22:14,17,19 | New Heaven and New Earth; Grace (Romans parallel) | — | Genesis 2:9; 3:22-24 (tree of life); Isaiah 55:1 (water without cost); Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32 (do not add to or take away from the word) | Threefold closing convergence: restored Eden access, free grace-gift language, and a covenant-document integrity warning modeled on Deuteronomy’s own canonical-closing formula. |
| Revelation 22:16 | Messianic Promise | Christ | Numbers 24:17 (“a star will come out of Jacob”); Isaiah 11:1,10 (again, root of David) | “Morning star” title directly completes Numbers 24:17’s messianic star-prophecy, already echoed at 2:28. |
| Revelation 22:20 | Perseverance and Faithful Witness; Return and Reign of Christ | Church; Christ | — (NT-internal; cf. 1 Corinthians 16:22 “Marana tha”) | “Come, Lord Jesus” is the Greek equivalent of Paul’s preserved Aramaic “Maranatha” (1 Corinthians 16:22) — an intra-NT parallel, not an OT one; both should be taught together as the same primitive church prayer of longing. |
Part 2 — Messianic Titles and Typological Threads: Summary Table
| Messianic Title / Type | First Revelation Occurrence | OT Root | Typological Pattern |
|---|
| Lion of the tribe of Judah | 5:5 | Genesis 49:9-10 | Royal tribal blessing fulfilled |
| Root/Offspring of David | 5:5; 22:16 | Isaiah 11:1,10 | Davidic dynasty’s promised final king |
| Lamb (slain) | 5:6 | Isaiah 53:7; Exodus 12; Genesis 22:8 | Suffering Servant + Passover + substitutionary provision, fused |
| Morning Star | 2:28; 22:16 | Numbers 24:17 | Messianic star-oracle fulfilled |
| Key of David | 3:7 | Isaiah 22:22 | Exclusive stewardship authority over God’s house |
| Son of Man | 1:13; 14:14 | Daniel 7:13-14 | Exalted judge-king granted everlasting dominion |
| Alpha and Omega / First and Last | 1:8,17; 21:6; 22:13 | Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; 48:12 | YHWH’s self-designation applied to Christ |
| Word of God | 19:13 | (cf. Genesis 1 creative speech; fulfilled in John 1:1, outside this book’s OT scope) | God’s own self-expressive agent in creation and judgment |
| King of kings, Lord of lords | 17:14; 19:16 | Deuteronomy 10:17 | Supreme divine title transferred to Christ |
| Rod of iron | 12:5; 19:15 | Psalm 2:9 | Messianic conquest and rule over the nations |
| Faithful and True Witness | 1:5; 3:14; 19:11 | Isaiah 65:16 | God’s own reliability-title, embodied in Christ |
Part 3 — Parallels to the Romans Curriculum and Rendering-Consistency Rules
Because learners in this language package will move between the Romans and Revelation curricula, every shared quotation, formula, or doctrine-term family must render identically across both. The following rules govern Phase 2 enforcement and must be added to the shared translation memory before cross-curriculum processing begins.
R1 — Divine Self-Designation (“I am the first and the last”)
- Occurrences: Revelation 1:8, 1:17, 21:6, 22:13 (all within Revelation; the underlying OT source, Isaiah 41:4/44:6/48:12, lies outside the Romans corpus but must still be cited consistently).
- Rule: Render ရှိတော်မူသော၊ ရှိခဲ့တော်မူသော၊ ကြွလာတော်မူမည့်သော (ch.1 “who is, who was, who is to come”) and အာလဖာနှင့် သြမေဂ / အစနှင့်အဆုံး (Alpha/Omega, beginning/end) identically at all four occurrences. No occurrence may substitute a shortened or paraphrased form.
R2 — “Faithful and True”
- Occurrences: Revelation 3:14; 19:11; 21:5; cf. baseline faith framework (Romans).
- Rule: Render πιστὸς καὶ ἀληθινός as သစ္စာရှိ၍ဟုတ်မှန်သော at all three Revelation occurrences without variation, since the phrase functions as a fixed divine-reliability title tying Christ (3:14, 19:11) directly to God’s own throne-voice (21:5).
R3 — “Holy, Holy, Holy” and Baseline “Holy”
- Occurrence: Revelation 4:8; baseline holy (Romans, throughout).
- Rule: The triple repetition must reuse the baseline holy rendering သန့်ရှင်းသော exactly, tripled, not replaced by a synonym for emphasis. This preserves the direct lexical link a Burmese reader will recognize between Romans’ teaching on believers’ call to holiness and Revelation’s vision of God’s own holiness as its source.
R4 — Universal Scope Language (“every nation, tribe, people, tongue” / “no distinction”)
- Occurrences: Revelation 5:9; 7:9; 14:6; 21:24-26; cf. Romans 1:16, 3:29-30, 10:12-13 (baseline universal_scope_of_gospel, unity_of_jews_and_gentiles, High risk).
- Rule: Retain fully unqualified, unrestricted universal language at every occurrence in both curricula. Given Burma’s own ethnic-majority/minority and Buddhist-national-identity tensions (already flagged in the Romans baseline), this rule carries elevated pastoral importance in Revelation, where the ingathered multitude explicitly includes every ethnic and national group without remainder or ranking.
R5 — “Overcome/Conquer” Word-Family (νικάω)
- Occurrences: Revelation 2:7,11,17,26; 3:5,12,21; 5:5; 12:11; 15:2; 17:14; 21:7 (ὁ νικῶν, “the one who overcomes”); Romans 8:37 (ὑπερνικῶμεν, “we are more than conquerors”).
- Rule: Both verb forms share a common Greek root. Render the Revelation refrain consistently as အောင်နိုင်သူ (“the one who overcomes/conquers”) and ensure that if/when Romans 8:37 is retranslated or cross-referenced, its rendering shares the same root verb (အောင်နိုင်) so that a learner moving from Romans 8 to Revelation 2–3 or 21:7 recognizes the linguistic and theological connection between “more than conquerors” (secured already, through Christ’s love) and “the one who overcomes” (the promised inheritance of the same secured victory). Flag for Phase 2: confirm the exact Burmese verb chosen for Romans 8:37 in the published Romans curriculum and backfill it into shared translation memory if it differs from အောင်နိုင်.
R6 — Grace / “Freely, Without Cost” (δωρεάν)
- Occurrences: Revelation 21:6; 22:17; cf. Romans 3:24 (δωρεάν, “justified freely by his grace” — Critical risk in the baseline doctrine registry).
- Rule: This is the single most important cross-curriculum rendering-consistency requirement in this analysis. The Greek adverb δωρεάν occurs in both Romans 3:24 and Revelation 21:6/22:17, and in both cases makes the identical point central to the baseline’s Critical-risk grace doctrine: salvation/eternal life is given apart from merit. The Romans-baseline
translation_memory.json does not currently contain a dedicated entry for this adverb. This document flags that gap: Phase 2 must add a new shared entry — recommended rendering အခမဲ့ (freely, without charge) — to translation memory before either curriculum’s segments containing δωρεάν are finalized, and both curricula’s occurrences must use the identical rendering. Every occurrence must carry a translator note reinforcing the contrast with ကုသိုလ် (merit accumulation), per the baseline’s central grace-vs-merit escalation rule.
R7 — “Called, Chosen, Faithful” / Election Vocabulary
- Occurrence: Revelation 17:14; cf. Romans 8:28-30, 9:11-12, 11:29 (baseline called, calling, election, effectual_calling, all High/Medium risk).
- Rule: Render κλητοὶ καὶ ἐκλεκτοὶ καὶ πιστοί by reusing baseline ခေါ်တော်မူသော (called) and ရွေးကောက်ခြင်း (election) exactly, joined with သစ္စာရှိသော (faithful). Do not introduce new vocabulary for “called” or “chosen” in Revelation distinct from the Romans baseline; this triad functions as a direct summary of the same effectual-calling doctrine already established there.
R8 — “Jesus Is Lord” / Lordship Confession
- Occurrences: Revelation 17:14; 19:16 (“King of kings and Lord of lords”); 22:20 (“Come, Lord Jesus”); cf. Romans 10:9 (baseline lord, Critical; fixed rendering ယေရှုသည် သခင်ဖြစ်တော်မူ၏).
- Rule: Every Revelation occurrence of “Lord” applied to Christ must build on the baseline lord rendering သခင် without exception, including within the compound title ဘုရင်တို့၏ဘုရင်၊ အရှင်တို့၏အရှင်. Theologian review must confirm that no occurrence allows Christ’s lordship to be read as diminished relative to the absolute, exclusive lordship already fixed by the Romans 10:9 confession.
R9 — Resurrection Terminology
- Occurrences: Revelation 1:5 (firstborn of the dead); 11:11; 20:5-6,12-13 (“first resurrection,” general resurrection); cf. Romans 6:4-5, 8:11 (baseline resurrection, Critical; fixed rendering ထမြောက်ခြင်း, absolutely forbidding ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း).
- Rule: Every resurrection reference in Revelation must reuse ထမြောက်ခြင်း exactly, including in the compound “first resurrection” (ပထမ ထမြောက်ခြင်း). No occurrence may be rendered in a way that could be construed as a stage within an ongoing rebirth cycle; this is a linear, historical, bodily event repeated in sequence (first/general) rather than in cycle.
R10 — Righteousness Granted, Not Earned
- Occurrences: Revelation 7:14; 19:8 (righteous acts of the saints, granted as wedding garments); cf. Romans 3:21-26, 4:3-5 (baseline righteousness, imputed_righteousness, Critical).
- Rule: The bride’s “righteous acts” (19:8) and the multitude’s white robes (7:14, explicitly “washed in the blood of the Lamb”) must be rendered and taught so as to reinforce, never contradict, the baseline principle that righteousness before God is received, not self-generated. Translator notes should explicitly draw the Romans 4 connection.
R11 — Wrath of God
- Occurrences: Revelation 6:16-17; 14:10,19; 15:1,7; 16:1,19; 19:15; cf. Romans 1:18 (God’s wrath revealed against ungodliness — outside baseline’s named term list but doctrinally load-bearing).
- Rule: This document flags a second translation-memory gap: neither
translation_memory.json nor bible_term_registry.json in the Romans baseline contains a dedicated entry for “wrath” (ὀργή/θυμός). Given its frequency and doctrinal weight in Revelation’s judgment sequences, Phase 2 should add a shared entry — recommended rendering အမျက်တော် (God’s own righteous anger/wrath) — and apply it uniformly across both curricula, distinguished from a merely emotional or capricious human anger term.
Part 4 — Coverage Confirmation
Every chapter of Revelation (1–22) has been reviewed for OT quotation, allusion, messianic reference, typology, and Romans-curriculum parallel. Chapter 10 is noted as contributing minimal independent material beyond what is already catalogued; all other chapters contribute at least one load-bearing cross-reference. No chapter has been silently omitted.
This document must be loaded alongside 07_semantic_analysis.md, 08_core_glossary.md, and the Romans baseline translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json before Phase 2 translation of any Revelation segment containing a cross-referenced OT quotation, messianic title, or shared Romans-curriculum term. Rules R1–R11 above must be encoded into the shared translation memory update prior to parallel-worker processing (per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md §Performance Notes for Batch Processing).
