Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — Philippians (Full Book) in Koine Greek
Destination Language: Burmese (Myanmar)
Purpose and Method
This document analyzes every load-bearing theological term in Philippians, chapter by chapter, in the original Koine Greek. The core passage (Philippians 2:1–11) receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level section treating its load-bearing terms with the same analytical fields. Where a term is already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json, the established Burmese rendering is reused exactly and marked “[BASELINE REUSE].” New terms introduced by Philippians are marked “[NEW TERM]” and proposed for addition to the language package in Step 2 (glossary) and beyond.
Fields used for every term:
- Original word (Greek, with morphological form as it appears)
- Transliteration
- Literal meaning
- Semantic range
- English variants (how English versions render it)
- Contextual theological meaning (in Philippians)
- Destination-language (Burmese) rendering risk
PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Philippians 2:1–11
This passage is the theological anchor of the curriculum: the carmen Christi (Christ hymn), grounding the doctrines of the Incarnation, Kenosis (self-emptying), humility, and the Lordship of Christ.
Philippians 2:1
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| παράκλησις | paraklēsis | a calling-alongside; encouragement, comfort, appeal | comfort, exhortation, consolation, appeal | ”encouragement,” “comfort” | Union with Christ produces mutual encouragement; grounds the appeal that follows | [NEW TERM] တိုက်တွန်းနှိုးဆော်ခြင်း / နှစ်သိမ့်ခြင်း (taik-tun-hnoso-chin / hnas-thein-chin). Baseline already has “exhort” (τιုိက်တွန်းနှိုးဆော်ခြင်း) for παρακαλέω — reuse verbal root, apply here as noun “comfort/encouragement in Christ.” Risk: Low, but must retain “in Christ” as the ground of the comfort, not generic encouragement. |
| παραμύθιον ἀγάπης | paramythion agapēs | consolation of love | comfort, solace arising from love | ”comfort from love,” “consolation of love” | Christ’s love produces relational consolation among believers | [NEW TERM] မေတ္တာမှဖြစ်သော နှစ်သိမ့်မှု (mate-tta hma-phyit-thaw hnas-thein-hmu). Risk: Low. Avoid substituting Buddhist metta (မေတ္တာ, loving-kindness meditation practice) as the source; here love is Christ’s love mediated through the church, not a self-cultivated meditative state. Flag for teaching note. |
| κοινωνία πνεύματος | koinōnia pneumatos | fellowship/partnership of the Spirit | shared participation, joint partnership | ”fellowship of the Spirit,” “participation in the Spirit” | Shared life in the Holy Spirit as the basis of unity | [BASELINE REUSE] ဝိညာဉ်တော်၏မိတ်သဟာယ (weinnyin-taw i meikthahaya) — κοινωνία = မိတ်သဟာယ per baseline “fellowship”; πνεῦμα qualified by baseline “holy_spirit” (သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော်). Risk: Medium. Must convey the Spirit’s own active bond, not mere social camaraderie. |
| σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί | splanchna kai oiktirmoi | inward parts/bowels and compassions | deep affection, tender mercy, compassion | ”affection and sympathy,” “tenderness and compassion” | Deep, gut-level compassion modeled by Christ | [NEW TERM] ကရုণာနှင့်သနားခြင်း (karuna hnin thanar-chin). Risk: Low-Medium. ကရုဏာ (karuna) is a shared cognate with Buddhist compassion vocabulary (one of the four brahmavihara); teaching note should clarify this compassion flows from union with Christ, not a cultivated meditative attitude generated apart from a personal God. |
Philippians 2:2
Greek: πληρώσατέ μου τὴν χαράν, ἵνα τὸ αὐτὸ φρονῆτε, τὴν αὐτὴν ἀγάπην ἔχοντες, σύμψυχοι, τὸ ἓν φρονοῦντες
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χαρά | chara | joy | joy, gladness, delight | ”joy” | Paul’s joy is completed by the church’s unity — joy is relational, not private | [NEW TERM] ဝမ်းမြောက်ခြင်း (wan-myauk-chin) — the established Myanmar Bible term for joy/gladness. Risk: Medium. Must be distinguished from ပီတိ (piti), the Buddhist meditative-rapture jhana factor experienced in concentrated meditation. NT χαρά is relational (rooted in Christ and others), not a self-generated meditative attainment. This is the anchor term for the curriculum’s “Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment” doctrine (see 1:4,18,25; 4:4). |
| τὸ αὐτὸ φρονῆτε / τὸ ἓν φρονοῦντες | to auto phronēte / to hen phronountes | to think the same thing / thinking the one thing | to have the same mindset, be of one mind/purpose | ”being of the same mind,” “of one mind” | Doctrinal/attitudinal unity flowing from a shared disposition, not mere agreement of opinion | [NEW TERM] တစ်သဘောတစ်နည်းတည်း ထားရှိခြင်း (ta-thabaw ta-nihi tay tharshi-chin) or အတူတူသောစိတ်ထားရှိခြင်း. Risk: Medium. Anchors the “Unity and Humility in the Church” doctrine; must convey a shared Christ-shaped disposition (φρόνημα, v.5), not mere social harmony maintained to avoid conflict (a strong Burmese cultural value that can substitute for genuine doctrinal unity). |
| σύμψυχοι | sympsychoi | united-souled, of one soul | joined in soul, harmonious | ”united in spirit,” “one in spirit” | Deep unity of affection among believers | [NEW TERM] စိတ်တစ်လုံးတစ်ဝတည်းဖြစ်ခြင်း (seik ta-loun ta-wa-di phyit-chin). Risk: Low. |
Philippians 2:3
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐριθεία | eritheia | rivalry, factionalism, selfish ambition | strife, self-seeking, party-spirit | ”selfish ambition,” “strife” | The opposite disposition to Christ’s self-emptying (v.6-8) | [NEW TERM] မိမိအကျိုးရှာမှု / ပြိုင်ဆိုင်မှု (mimi akyo-shar-hmu). Risk: Low. |
| κενοδοξία | kenodoxia | empty glory, empty conceit | vainglory, vain conceit, groundless pride | ”conceit,” “vain conceit” | Seeking honor without substance — directly contrasted with Christ who held true δόξα (glory, v.11) yet did not grasp at status | [NEW TERM] အချည်းနှီးသော ဂုဏ်ယူမှု (achinesnee-thaw gon-yu-hmu). Risk: Medium. The κενο- root deliberately echoes ἐκένωσεν (v.7, “emptied himself”) — Paul contrasts empty self-glorification with Christ’s self-emptying. This wordplay should be preserved in teaching notes even though Burmese cannot reproduce the pun directly. |
| ταπεινοφροσύνη | tapeinophrosynē | lowliness of mind, humility | humility, modesty, lowliness | ”humility” | The positive virtue Christ embodies (v.8) and believers must practice — the doctrinal center of “Unity and Humility in the Church” | [NEW TERM — HIGH RISK] နှိမ့်ချသောစိတ် (hnoke-chi-thaw seik) / နှိမ့်ချမှု (hnoke-chi-hmu). Risk: High. In Burmese social hierarchy, “lowering oneself” (နှိမ့်ချခြင်း) is expected of social inferiors toward superiors (junior to elder, layperson to monk) and can be misread as enforced social submission rather than a voluntary Christlike disposition freely adopted by one who, like Christ, has genuine standing to claim. Teaching note required: this humility is chosen from strength (as by God the Son himself), not imposed from weakness. |
| ὑπερέχοντας ἑαυτῶν | hyperechontas heautōn | surpassing themselves; more important than themselves | superior to, more significant than | ”more significant than yourselves,” “better than yourselves” | Counting others’ worth above one’s own — a direct behavioral outworking of the mind of Christ | [NEW TERM] မိမိထက် သာလွန်သည်ဟု ထင်မှတ်ခြင်း. Risk: Medium. |
Philippians 2:4
Greek: μὴ τὰ ἑαυτῶν ἕκαστος σκοποῦντες, ἀλλὰ [καὶ] τὰ ἑτέρων ἕκαστοι
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σκοποῦντες | skopountes | looking at, fixing attention on, taking aim at | consider, watch, aim at | ”looking to,” “being concerned for” | Same root as σκοπός (3:14, “goal/mark”) — a deliberate, aimed attentiveness, not passive noticing | [NEW TERM] ရှုမှတ်ခြင်း / ဂရုစိုက်ခြင်း (shumat-chin / garu-saik-chin). Risk: Low. |
Philippians 2:5
Greek: τοῦτο φρονεῖτε ἐν ὑμῖν ὃ καὶ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| φρονεῖτε / φρόνημα | phroneite | think, have this mindset/disposition | attitude, mindset, way of thinking-and-valuing | ”have this mind,” “adopt this attitude” | The hinge verse: introduces the Christ-hymn as the paradigm for the church’s communal disposition | [NEW TERM] ဤသဘောထားကို သင်တို့တွင် ရှိစေကြလော့ (thi thabaw-htar ko sin-do twin shi-say-kya-lot). Risk: Medium. Must be rendered as an active, cultivated disposition (“have/adopt this mind”), not a passive feeling; theological weight of the whole hymn rests on this imperative. |
Philippians 2:6
Greek: ὃς ἐν μορφῇ θεοῦ ὑπάρχων οὐχ ἁρπαγμὸν ἡγήσατο τὸ εἶναι ἴσα θεῷ
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| μορφῇ θεοῦ | morphē theou | form of God | essential nature/being expressed in outward form; not mere physical shape | ”form of God,” “God’s very nature” | Christ’s pre-incarnate essential deity — full participation in the divine nature and glory | [NEW TERM — CRITICAL] ဘုရားသခင်၏ဇာတိသဏ္ဌာန် (Phayarthakhin i zar-ti-thanda). Risk: Critical, directly tied to baseline “deity_of_christ” doctrine (Critical). μορφή must NOT be rendered with a term suggesting only outward image/likeness comparable to a ဘုရားပုံ/ဆင်းတု (Buddha image/statue, a crafted representation). Christ’s μορφή θεοῦ is his actual essential divine being, not a representation of it. Recommend “ဇာတိသဏ္ဌာန်” (essential nature/form) over plain “ပုံသဏ္ဌာန်” (shape/appearance) to avoid the idol-image association. |
| ὑπάρχων | hyparchōn | existing, being (continuously) | to be, to exist, to be really/originally | ”being,” “who, being” | Present participle denoting Christ’s continuous prior state of existing in the form of God, before the kenosis of v.7 | [NEW TERM] ရှိတော်မူစဉ် (shi-taw-mu-sin, “while existing/being”). Risk: Medium. Must convey ongoing prior state, not a momentary event, to preserve the pre-incarnate/incarnate contrast structuring the whole hymn. |
| ἁρπαγμόν | harpagmon | a thing seized/grasped; a prize to be forcibly held onto | (debated) something to be grasped at, or something to be clung to/exploited for advantage | ”a thing to be grasped,” “something to cling to,” “to be used to his own advantage” | Christ did not treat his divine equality as a status to exploit for self-advantage or a prize to seize — the opposite of the ἐριθεία/κενοδοξία of v.3 | [NEW TERM] ဖမ်းဆုပ်ကိုင်ထားရမည့်အရာ (phan-souk kaing-tar-ya-me-a-yar). Risk: Medium — genuinely ambiguous in Greek (two live scholarly renderings: “to grasp at” vs. “to hold onto/exploit”). Per ambiguity-handling protocol (baseline §Ambiguity Handling): select the rendering that “did not treat equality with God as a status to exploit for his own advantage,” record the “grasp at” alternative in the segment cache, and flag for native-speaker/theologian review given the Critical doctrine (deity_of_christ) it touches. |
| ἴσα θεῷ | isa theō | equal to God | equality, sameness of status/nature | ”equal with God,” “equality with God” | Full ontological equality with God the Father — a direct christological assertion of deity | [BASELINE-ADJACENT — CRITICAL] ဘုရားသခင်နှင့် တူညီခြင်း (Phayarthakhin hnin tunyi-chin). Risk: Critical. Directly parallels baseline “son_of_god”/“deity_of_christ” Critical-risk terms. Must never be softened to imply Christ merely resembled or was blessed like God (a lesser or derivative status), which would collapse into the very “grasping” he refused, and would risk reading as an elevated-but-created being (comparable to a Brahma-realm deity), the same collision the baseline flags for “father” and “son_of_god.” |
Philippians 2:7
Greek: ἀλλὰ ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν μορφὴν δούλου λαβών, ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐκένωσεν (ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν) | ekenōsen (heauton ekenōsen) | he emptied (himself) | to empty, to make void, to pour out, (figuratively) to divest oneself of rank/privilege | ”emptied himself,” “made himself nothing,” “gave up his divine privileges” | The kenosis: Christ voluntarily laid aside the outward display and prerogatives of divine glory and status (not his divine nature itself) in order to take on humanity | [NEW TERM — CRITICAL, HIGHEST-PRIORITY COLLISION RISK] မိမိကိုယ်ကို စွန့်လှတ်တော်မူ၍ (mimi-koyko sunlot-taw-mu-yi, “having relinquished/set aside himself”). Risk: CRITICAL. This is the single highest syncretism risk in the entire book. Burmese Buddhist thought is built around သုညတ (thonya-ta / śūnyatā, “emptiness”) and အနတ္တ (anatta, “no-self”) as core metaphysical doctrines — the idea that there is no fixed, essential self at all. If κενόω is rendered with any term built on သုည (thonya, “void/empty/zero”) — e.g., သုညဖြစ်သွားခြင်း (“became empty/void”) — it will be heard as Christ dissolving his divine essence/self, echoing anatta, rather than voluntarily setting aside the outward exercise and display of divine glory while remaining fully God. FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION: NEVER use any compound built on သုည (thonya) for this term. The approved rendering “စွန့်လှတ်တော်မူ” (relinquish/set aside/renounce) must be taught alongside an explicit note: Christ did not cease to be God or lose his divine nature; he set aside the visible display of glory and his rightful prerogatives. This term must be routed to human theologian review on every occurrence, per baseline escalation-rule pattern for Incarnation/Deity of Christ. |
| μορφὴν δούλου λαβών | morphēn doulou labōn | having taken the form of a slave/servant | assuming the nature/status of a slave | ”taking the form of a servant,” “taking the very nature of a servant” | Christ assumed not merely humanity in general but the lowest social status within humanity — total self-humbling | [NEW TERM] ကျွန်၏ဇာတိသဏ္ဌာန်ကို ခံယူတော်မူ၍ (kyun i zar-ti-thanda ko khan-yu-taw-mu-yi). δοῦλος = ကျွန် (kyun, “slave/bondservant” — the standard Myanmar Bible term). Risk: High. Must be taught as a voluntary, chosen self-lowering by one who was Lord of all — not degradation imposed on him, and not comparable to a debt-bondage or hereditary caste status. Directly reinforces baseline “incarnation” (လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း) doctrine — this term supplies the manner (as a servant) of that incarnation. |
| ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος | en homoiōmati anthrōpōn genomenos | having come to be in the likeness of men | becoming/being born in human likeness | ”being made in human likeness,” “made in the likeness of men” | Genuine, full humanity — not an illusory appearance of a body | [BASELINE REUSE] လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း (lu-zarti khan-yu-chin) — this is the direct scriptural ground of the baseline’s Critical “incarnation” term. Risk: Critical, per baseline. Reuse baseline wording exactly; NEVER use ဘုရားလောင်းအဖြစ်မွေးဖွားခြင်း (Jataka-style Buddha-to-be birth cycle) or နတ်ဆင်းသက်ခြင်း (nat-spirit descent/possession), per baseline forbidden-substitution list. |
Philippians 2:8
Greek: καὶ σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτὸν γενόμενος ὑπήκοος μέχρι θανάτου, θανάτου δὲ σταυροῦ
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος | schēmati heuretheis hōs anthrōpos | being found in outward appearance/fashion as a man | recognizable, outward, visible form as a human | ”being found in human form,” “found in human appearance” | Distinct from μορφή (v.6-7, essential nature): σχῆμα here emphasizes the outward, observable, verifiable humanness of Christ — he was genuinely recognizable and encounterable as a real human being | [NEW TERM] လူ့ပုံသဏ္ဌာန်အနေအထားဖြင့် တွေ့ရှိတော်မူ၍ (lu pum-thanda a-nay-a-tar-phyin twe-shi-taw-mu-yi). Risk: High. Directly reinforces baseline “humanity_of_christ” doctrine — Christ’s humanity was fully real and physically verifiable, not an illusory or spirit-manifested appearance as sometimes found in Burmese folk-narrative accounts of miraculous or spirit-manifested births. |
| ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτὸν | etapeinōsen heauton | he humbled himself | to lower, abase, humble oneself | ”he humbled himself” | The verbal counterpart to v.3’s ταπεινοφροσύνη — Christ is the paradigm the church is called to imitate | [NEW TERM — HIGH] မိမိကိုယ်ကို နှိမ့်ချတော်မူ၍ (mimi-koyko hnoke-chi-taw-mu-yi). Risk: High, same collision noted at v.3 — must be taught as a voluntary act of one with full standing to refuse it, the theological ground for genuine (not merely social-hierarchical) humility. |
| γενόμενος ὑπήκοος μέχρι θανάτου | genomenos hypēkoos mechri thanatou | having become obedient unto death | obedience carried to the point of death | ”becoming obedient to the point of death,” “obedient unto death” | Christ’s obedience (ὑπακοή root, cf. baseline “obedience_of_faith”) is perfect and complete, extending even to death | [BASELINE-ADJACENT] သေခြင်းတိုင်အောင် နာခံလျက် (thay-chin tine-aung nakhan-lyet). Reuses the baseline ναခံ (nakhan) root from “obedience_of_faith” (ယုံကြည်ခြင်း၏နာခံမှု). Risk: High. This is Christ’s own perfect obedience, the ground of believers’ obedience-of-faith, not a separate concept — teaching notes should draw the connection explicitly. |
| θανάτου δὲ σταυροῦ | thanatou de staurou | even death of a cross | crucifixion, the specific shameful mode of death | ”even death on a cross,” “death on the cross” | The cross was a form of execution reserved for slaves and rebels — the ultimate, shameful depth of Christ’s self-humbling, matching his taking the “form of a slave” (v.7) | [NEW TERM] လက်ဝါးကပ်တိုင်ပေါ်တွင် အသေခံခြင်း (letwar-kaptai-daw-htwin a-thay-khan-chin). Risk: Medium. Standard, well-established crucifixion vocabulary in Myanmar Christian usage; risk lies only in ensuring the shame/status dimension (a slave’s death) is not lost in teaching, since it completes the “form of a slave” theme from v.7. |
Philippians 2:9
Greek: διὸ καὶ ὁ θεὸς αὐτὸν ὑπερύψωσεν καὶ ἐχαρίσατο αὐτῷ τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὑπερύψωσεν | hyperypsōsen | he super-exalted, highly exalted | to raise to the highest degree, to exalt above all | ”highly exalted,” “super-exalted” | God’s response to Christ’s self-humbling: the reversal pattern (humbling → exaltation) that grounds the doctrine of the Resurrection and Lordship of Christ | [NEW TERM — HIGH] အထွဋ်အထိပ်တင် မြှင့်စားတော်မူ၍ (a-htwet-a-htate-tin mya-shin-sar-taw-mu-yi, “raised to the very highest”). Risk: High. Must be distinguished from ဘုန်းကံ-style merit-earned elevation (cf. baseline “glory” note on ဘုန်း/ဘုန်းကံ) — Christ’s exaltation is the Father’s sovereign gift and vindication of the eternal Son, not merit accumulated through his obedience as though obedience purchased status he did not already possess by nature. |
| ἐχαρίσατο | echarisato | he graciously gave, bestowed as a gift | to grant freely, to give as a favor (same root as χάρις, “grace”) | “bestowed,” “gave,” “graciously gave” | Shares the χάρις (grace) root — the Father’s bestowal on the Son parallels, and grounds, the pattern of grace given to believers | [BASELINE-ADJACENT] ကျေးဇူးပြု၍ချီးမြှင့်တော်မူ၍ (kyayzu-pyu-yi chi-mya-shin-taw-mu-yi) — verb built on baseline “grace” root ကျေးဇူးတော်. Risk: Medium. |
| τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα | to onoma to hyper pan onoma | the name that is above every name | supreme, unsurpassed rank/authority signified by “the name" | "the name above every name,” “the name that is above every name” | The divine name (κύριος/YHWH, echoing Isaiah 45:23, cited in v.10-11) is now openly borne by Jesus — the strongest possible assertion of his deity and lordship | [BASELINE-ADJACENT — CRITICAL] ခေါင်းရဲကူးအမည်ထက် ကြီးမြတ်သော အမည်တော် (referring to “the Name” as bearing supreme divine authority). Risk: Critical, tied to baseline “lordship_of_christ” and “deity_of_christ.” “The name” here functions as shorthand for the divine title/identity itself (κύριος); rendering must not flatten this into merely “a famous name” or “an honorable title.” |
Philippians 2:10
Greek: ἵνα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ | pan gony kampsē | every knee should bow | universal, mandatory act of homage/worship | ”every knee should bow,” “every knee will bow” | Universal, cosmic homage owed to Christ — echoing Isaiah 45:23’s confession owed to YHWH alone, now transferred to Jesus | [NEW TERM — HIGH] ဒူးရှိသမျှ ညွတ်ရမည် (du shi-tha-myar nyut-ya-me). Risk: High. Kneeling/prostration (ဒူးတုပ်ခြင်း, ရှိခိုးခြင်း) is a familiar and expected devotional posture in Burmese religious life, typically directed toward Buddha images, monks, and elders. This is a genuine cultural bridge (the gesture is well understood), but requires explicit teaching that the object of this bowing is uniquely the living, exalted Lord Jesus — an act of worship owed to God alone (cf. baseline “lord”/κύριος notes), not a gesture of general respect extendable to any venerated figure or image. |
| ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων | epouraniōn kai epigeiōn kai katachthoniōn | of heavenly, earthly, and under-the-earth ones | the entire cosmos in its three traditional tiers | ”in heaven, on earth, and under the earth” | Total cosmic scope — no being, in any realm, is exempted from acknowledging Christ’s lordship | [NEW TERM] ကောင်းကင်ရှိသူများ၊ မြေကြီးပေါ်ရှိသူများ၊ မြေအောက်ရှိသူများ (kaung-gin shi-thu-myar, myay-gyi-paw shi-thu-myar, myay-auk shi-thu-myar). Risk: Medium. Burmese cosmology includes its own tiered universe (deva/nat realms above, human realm, naga/underworld realms below); teaching note should clarify this is describing the totality of created reality under Christ’s authority, not endorsing the Buddhist cosmological map itself. |
Philippians 2:11
Greek: καὶ πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, εἰς δόξαν θεοῦ πατρός
| Term | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐξομολογήσηται | exomologēsētai | should confess openly, acknowledge fully | to confess, acknowledge publicly, declare | ”confess,” “acknowledge,” “declare openly” | Public, verbal confession corresponding to Romans 10:9’s salvation confession | [BASELINE-ADJACENT] ဝန်ခံခြင်း (wan-khan-chin). Risk: Medium, but structurally must echo the baseline’s exact confession pattern below. |
| κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός | kyrios Iēsous Christos | Jesus Christ is Lord | the confession of Christ’s supreme, exclusive authority | ”Jesus Christ is Lord” | The same salvation-defining confession as Romans 10:9 — [BASELINE REUSE MANDATORY] | [BASELINE REUSE — CRITICAL, EXACT MATCH REQUIRED] ယေရှုခရစ်သည် သခင်ဖြစ်တော်မူ၏ (Yayshu-khayit-thi thakhin-phyit-taw-mu-i). This must render with the identical grammatical pattern as the baseline’s Romans 10:9 confession “ယေရှုသည် သခင်ဖြစ်တော်မူ၏” (with ခရစ် “Christ” inserted per this verse’s fuller title). Per the baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents,” this confession must be verbatim-consistent with Romans 10:9 wherever it recurs. Risk: Critical. |
| εἰς δόξαν θεοῦ πατρός | eis doxan theou patros | to the glory of God the Father | for/unto the honor and glory of the Father | ”to the glory of God the Father” | Christ’s exaltation and universal acknowledgment terminates in, and does not compete with, the Father’s glory — Trinitarian, not rivalrous | [BASELINE REUSE] ဘုရားသခင်အဖ၏ဘုန်းတော်အလို့ငှာ (Phayarthakhin a-pha i phon-taw a-lo-nghar). δόξα = ဘုန်းတော် (baseline “glory”); πατήρ = အဖ (baseline “father”). Risk: High, per baseline notes on both terms — ဘုန်း must not be read as merit-power (ဘုန်းကံ), and အဖ must never be rendered ဗြဟ္မာ (Brahma). |
PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 — Greeting, Partnership, Joy in Bonds, Living Is Christ
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοῦλος (1:1) | δοῦλοι Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ | douloi Christou Iēsou | slaves/servants of Christ Jesus | bondservant, slave, one wholly owned by a master | ”servants,” “bondservants,” “slaves” | Paul and Timothy identify themselves not as “apostles” here but as Christ’s owned slaves — total belonging and submission to Christ, the same status-word Christ himself takes on in 2:7 | [NEW TERM — HIGH] ခရစ်တော်ယေရှု၏ကျွန် (Khayitto-Yayshu i kyun). Risk: High. Sets up the deliberate self-identification parallel with 2:7; teaching note should draw this connection. Distinguish from indentured/chattel slavery still practiced historically in the region — this is a voluntary, honored identity, not an imposed degradation. |
| ἐπίσκοπος (1:1) | σὺν ἐπισκόποις | syn episkopois | overseers | bishop, overseer, superintendent | ”overseers,” “bishops” | Early local church leadership office | [NEW TERM] အုပ်ထိန်းသူ (auk-htein-thu, “overseer”). Risk: Medium. Avoid any term suggesting the Buddhist monastic abbot role (ဆရာတော်) or hierarchical sangha authority; this is a congregational shepherding office within the local church (baseline “church” doctrine), not a monastic rank. |
| διάκονος (1:1) | σὺν διακόνοις | syn diakonois | servants/deacons | deacon, servant, minister | ”deacons,” “servants” | Recognized local church service office | [NEW TERM] သင်းထောက် (thin-htauk, “deacon”). Risk: Low-Medium. Established Myanmar church usage. |
| κοινωνία εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον (1:5) | κοινωνίᾳ ὑμῶν εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον | koinōnia eis to euangelion | partnership/fellowship unto the gospel | active partnership, joint participation, shared investment | ”partnership in the gospel,” “fellowship in the gospel” | The Philippians’ active material and spiritual co-laboring in Paul’s gospel ministry — anchors the “Partnership in the Gospel” doctrine | [BASELINE REUSE] သတင်းကောင်း၌ မိတ်သဟာယဖြစ်ခြင်း (thadin-kaung ne meikthahaya phyit-chin). εὐαγγέλιον = သတင်းကောင်း (baseline, High risk); κοινωνία = မိတ်သဟာယ (baseline, Low risk). Risk: Medium in combination — must convey active, ongoing partnership/co-investment (including financial support, cf. 4:15), not passive social fellowship. |
| χαρά / χαίρω (1:4, 18, 25) | μετὰ χαρᾶς | meta charas | with joy | joy, gladness | ”with joy,” “rejoicing” | Joy amid Paul’s imprisonment — thematic thread of the whole letter | [NEW TERM — see 2:2 entry above] ဝမ်းမြောက်ခြင်း. Risk: Medium-High at first occurrence (1:4) because it introduces the letter’s central paradox: joy while imprisoned (1:7,13). Must be clearly distinguished from ပီတိ (meditative rapture) and from stoic detachment; this joy has a specific object (Christ, the advance of the gospel, v.18) and persists through, not by escaping, suffering. |
| δεσμά (1:7, 13, 14, 17) | τὰ δεσμά μου | ta desma mou | my bonds/chains | imprisonment, chains, fetters | ”my chains,” “my imprisonment,” “my bonds” | Paul’s literal Roman imprisonment, reframed as advancing the gospel (1:12) — anchors “Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment” | [NEW TERM] ချည်နှောင်ခြင်း / အကျဉ်းချခြင်း (chi-hnaung-chin / a-kyin-cha-chin). Risk: Medium. No significant syncretism risk, but the theological pairing of suffering with joy needs explicit teaching, since suffering is more commonly read in the local culture through a karmic lens (suffering as the fruit of past bad karma) rather than as a providential context for gospel advance and joy (cf. baseline “providence” doctrine). |
| παρρησία (1:20) | ἐν πάσῃ παρρησίᾳ | en pasē parrēsia | with all boldness | boldness, confidence, freedom of speech | ”with all boldness,” “with great courage” | Paul’s confident hope that Christ will be honored through his life or death | [NEW TERM] ရဲရင့်စွာ (yeyin-swa, “boldly”). Risk: Low. |
| τὸ ζῆν Χριστός (1:21) | ἐμοὶ γὰρ τὸ ζῆν Χριστός | emoi gar to zēn Christos | for me, to live [is] Christ | Christ as the entire content and meaning of life | ”for to me, to live is Christ,” “for me, living means Christ” | Christ-centered identity/existence — connects directly to baseline “christian_identity_in_christ” doctrine | [NEW TERM — HIGH] ငါ့အဖို့ အသက်ရှင်ခြင်းသည် ခရစ်တော်ဖြစ်၏ (nga-a-po a-thet-shin-chin thi Khayitto-phyit-i). Risk: High. Must not be softened into “Christ is important to my life” — the Greek asserts total identity-collapse into Christ, comparable in force to Romans 6’s “in Christ” union language. |
| πολιτεύεσθε (1:27) | πολιτεύεσθε | politeuesthe | conduct yourselves as citizens | to live/conduct oneself as a citizen, to comport oneself in accordance with a constitution | ”let your conduct be,” “conduct yourselves as citizens” | First appearance of the citizenship-metaphor that culminates in 3:20’s πολίτευμα (“citizenship is in heaven”) — must be rendered consistently with that later term | [NEW TERM — flag forward to 3:20] နိုင်ငံသားအဖြစ် ကျင့်ကြံနေထိုင်ကြလော့ (nainggan-thar a-phyit kyin-kyan nay-htain-kya-lot). Risk: Medium. Establishes the citizenship metaphor early; must be tracked for consistency with the “Citizenship in Heaven” doctrine developed fully in ch.3. |
| πάσχειν (1:29) | τὸ ὑπὲρ Χριστοῦ πάσχειν | to hyper Christou paschein | to suffer for Christ’s sake | to suffer, undergo hardship | ”to suffer for his sake” | Suffering itself is described as a gift granted (ἐχαρίσθη, same root as χάρις/grace, 1:29) — suffering for Christ is itself grace | [NEW TERM — HIGH] ခရစ်တော်အတွက် ဆင်းရဲဒုက္ခခံစားခြင်း (Khayitto a-twet sin-yay-douk-kha khan-thar-chin). Risk: High. The pairing of ဆင်းရဲဒုက္ခ (dukkha — the very term denoting the First Noble Truth’s “suffering” in Buddhist teaching) with grace/gift language is theologically loaded: this suffering is not karmic consequence to be escaped via detachment, but a grace-given privilege of gospel partnership. Requires explicit teaching note. |
Chapter 2 (continued, 2:12–30) — Working Out Salvation, Blamelessness, Sacrificial Service
(2:1–11 treated in full above as the core passage)
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κατεργάζεσθε τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν (2:12) | κατεργάζεσθε | katergazesthe | work out, bring to completion | to work at thoroughly, accomplish, carry to its result | ”work out your own salvation” | The outworking (sanctification) of a salvation already secured (cf. v.13, “for it is God who works in you”), not the earning of salvation by effort | [BASELINE REUSE + CRITICAL FLAG] ကယ်တင်ခြင်းကို ဆောင်ရွက်ကြလော့ (kaetin-chin ko saung-ywet-kya-lot). σωτηρία = ကယ်တင်ခြင်း (baseline, Critical). Risk: Critical. This is the single highest works/grace-collision risk in Philippians, directly parallel to the baseline’s Romans grace-warnings. If κατεργάζεσθε is rendered in a way that suggests salvation itself is achieved by human effort, it will map directly onto ကုသိုလ်ပြုခြင်း (merit-making) logic. MANDATORY teaching note: this verse assumes salvation already given by grace (per Php 1:6, 2:13 “God who works in you”) and calls for its outworking in obedience — not its procurement. Must be read alongside Romans-established grace doctrine. Route for human theologian review on every occurrence. |
| φόβος καὶ τρόμος (2:12) | μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου | meta phobou kai tromou | with fear and trembling | reverent awe, seriousness, humility before God | ”with fear and trembling” | Appropriate reverent seriousness in sanctified living | [NEW TERM] ကြောက်ရွံ့တုန်လှုပ်လျက် (kyauk-yon toun-hluk-lyet). Risk: Low. |
| ἄμεμπτος (2:15) | ἄμεμπτοι | amemptoi | blameless, faultless | without blame or fault, irreproachable | ”blameless,” “without fault” | The visible integrity of believers as lights in the world | [BASELINE-ADJACENT] အပြစ်ကင်းသော (a-pyit-kin-thaw) — builds on baseline “sin” term (အပြစ်). Risk: Medium. Must not imply a merit-scale of accumulated blamelessness (cf. baseline sin/righteousness Critical notes); this is Spirit-produced integrity, not a self-achieved sinless record. |
| φωστῆρες (2:15) | ὡς φωστῆρες ἐν κόσμῳ | hōs phōstēres en kosmō | as lights/luminaries in the world | stars, heavenly lights, sources of illumination | ”as lights in the world” | Believers’ visible, radiant witness in a dark culture | [NEW TERM] ကမ္ဘာအလင်းရောင်များအဖြစ် (kabar a-lin-yaung-myar a-phyit). Risk: Low. |
| σπένδομαι (2:17) | εἰ καὶ σπένδομαι | ei kai spendomai | if I am even poured out (as a libation) | sacrificial pouring-out, drink-offering imagery | ”even if I am poured out as a libation,” “poured out as a sacrifice” | Paul frames his possible martyrdom as a sacrificial offering completing the Philippians’ own offering of faith | [NEW TERM — HIGH] ယဇ်ကဲ့သို့ ငါ့ကိုသွန်းလောင်းရသော်လည်း (yaza-kabaw nga-ko soun-laung-ya-thaw-lae). Risk: High. Libation/pouring-out offerings (ရေစက်လောင်းခြင်း) are also practiced in Burmese Buddhist and animist/nat-propitiation contexts to transfer merit or appease spirits. Teaching note required: Paul’s self-offering is a willing sacrificial gift to God in gratitude, completing (not appeasing or earning) an already-secured relationship, unlike merit-transfer libation or spirit-propitiation offerings. |
| λειτουργία (2:17, 30) | τῆς λειτουργίας τῆς πίστεως ὑμῶν | tēs leitourgias tēs pisteōs hymōn | the service/ministry of your faith | sacred service, ministry, liturgical service | ”the sacrificial service of your faith,” “your service to me” | The Philippians’ gift to Paul is described in priestly/sacrificial service language | [NEW TERM] ယုံကြည်ခြင်း၏အမှုတော် (yunkyichin i a-hmu-taw). Risk: Medium. Reuses baseline “faith” (ယုံကြည်ခြင်း); avoid rendering λειτουργία with vocabulary implying a formal priestly caste ritual distinct from ordinary believers’ service. |
| παραβολευσάμενος (2:30) | παραβολευσάμενος τῇ ψυχῇ | paraboleusamenos tē psychē | having gambled/risked with his life | to risk, hazard, stake one’s life | ”risking his life,” “hazarding his life” | Epaphroditus’s sacrificial risk on the Philippians’ behalf — a human echo of Christ’s self-giving in the hymn | [NEW TERM] အသက်ကိုပင် စွန့်စား၍ (a-thet ko-pin sun-sar-yi). Risk: Low. |
Chapter 3 — Righteousness by Faith, Knowing Christ, Citizenship in Heaven, Pressing On
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| περιτομή (3:5) | περιτομή | peritomē | circumcision | the Jewish covenant sign | ”circumcision” | Paul’s former confidence in Jewish covenant identity | [NEW TERM] အရေဖျားလှီးခြင်း (a-yay-phyar-hlee-chin). Risk: Low. Established Myanmar Bible term. |
| Φαρισαῖος (3:5) | κατὰ νόμον Φαρισαῖος | kata nomon Pharisaios | a Pharisee as to the law | member of the strict Torah-observant Jewish party | ”a Pharisee” | Paul’s former religious pedigree, listed among the “confidences in the flesh” he now rejects | [NEW TERM] ဖာရိရှဲ (Pha-ri-shay, transliteration). Risk: Low. |
| δικαιοσύνη ἐκ νόμου / διὰ πίστεως (3:9) | δικαιοσύνην τὴν ἐκ νόμου … τὴν διὰ πίστεως Χριστοῦ | dikaiosynēn tēn ek nomou … tēn dia pisteōs Christou | righteousness from the law … righteousness through faith in Christ | forensic legal standing sourced either in Torah-performance or in Christ’s finished work, received by trust | ”righteousness which is from the law” vs. “righteousness which comes through faith in Christ” | The direct thesis-statement of “Righteousness by Faith versus the Law,” using the exact same theological architecture as Romans | [BASELINE REUSE — CRITICAL, MANDATORY EXACT REUSE] ပညတ်တရားအားဖြင့်ဖြစ်သော ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း … ခရစ်တော်ကို ယုံကြည်ခြင်းအားဖြင့်ဖြစ်သော ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း. δικαιοσύνη = ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း, νόμος = ပညတ်တရား, πίστις = ယုံကြည်ခြင်း — all baseline Critical/High terms, reused exactly per the hard rule. Risk: Critical. This verse must be flagged for human theologian review on every occurrence; it is the Philippians parallel to Romans 3–4’s grace/law contrast, and the merit-culture collision (ကုသိုလ်ကံ, သီလ) documented in the baseline applies with full force here. |
| σκύβαλα (3:8) | σκύβαλα | skybala | rubbish, refuse, dung | worthless waste, excrement, garbage | ”rubbish,” “garbage,” “dung” | Paul’s deliberately crude, forceful term for the worthlessness of his own former self-righteous credentials compared to knowing Christ | [NEW TERM — HIGH] အမှိုက်သရိုက် (a-hmite-tha-yite, “garbage/refuse”). Risk: High. The force of the term (crude, total repudiation) must not be softened into a mild “of little value” — Paul’s point is the total worthlessness of self-righteousness/merit-accumulation set against knowing Christ, a direct, deliberately shocking rhetorical assault on merit-culture logic. This is one of the most theologically loaded single words in the letter for a Burmese Buddhist-background audience and should be flagged for theologian review alongside the surrounding righteousness-by-faith passage. |
| γνῶσις (3:8, 10) | τῆς γνώσεως Χριστοῦ | tēs gnōseōs Christou | the knowledge of Christ | personal, relational knowing (not merely intellectual) | “the knowledge of Christ,” “knowing Christ” | Relational, experiential knowledge of a Person, surpassing all other forms of value | [NEW TERM — HIGH] ခရစ်တော်ကို သိမှတ်ခြင်း (Khayitto ko thi-mat-chin). Risk: High. Must be distinguished from ဝိပဿနာဉာဏ် (vipassanā-ñāṇa, insight-knowledge attained through one’s own meditative practice) and from ဉာဏ်တော်ရရှိခြင်း (attaining the Buddha’s enlightened insight). γνῶσις Χριστοῦ is relational knowledge of a Person who is known and who reveals himself, not insight self-generated through disciplined introspection. |
| τέλειος (3:12, 15) | οὔπω τετελείωμαι … ὅσοι τέλειοι | oupō teteleiōmai … hosoi teleioi | not yet perfected/completed … as many as are mature/perfect | complete, mature, brought to the intended goal | ”not yet perfect/complete,” “mature,” “perfect” | Progressive spiritual maturity attained through pursuing Christ in this life — connects to “Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ” | [NEW TERM — HIGH] စုံလင်သော / ရင့်ကျက်သော (soun-lin-thaw / yin-kyet-thaw). Risk: High. Direct collision risk with ပါရမီ (pāramī), the Buddhist doctrine of ten perfections cultivated across countless lifetimes toward Buddhahood/enlightenment. τέλειος in Philippians 3 is Spirit-enabled maturity pursued within a single lifetime toward a goal secured by Christ’s resurrection (v.10-11), not merit-perfections accumulated across a chain of rebirths. Must never be rendered with ပါရမီ or any cognate. |
| δύναμις τῆς ἀναστάσεως (3:10) | τὴν δύναμιν τῆς ἀναστάσεως αὐτοῦ | tēn dynamin tēs anastaseōs autou | the power of his resurrection | Christ’s resurrection power at work in believers | ”the power of his resurrection” | Present experiential power flowing from Christ’s historical bodily resurrection | [BASELINE REUSE] ကိုယ်တော်၏ထမြောက်ခြင်း၏ တန်ခိုးတော် (koyidaw i hta-myauk-chin i tankhoe-taw). ἀνάστασις = ထမြောက်ခြင်း (baseline, Critical); δύναμις = တန်ခိုးတော် (cf. baseline “power_of_god”). Risk: Critical, per baseline resurrection notes — never render with ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း (rebirth/reincarnation). |
| κοινωνία τῶν παθημάτων (3:10) | κοινωνίαν τῶν παθημάτων αὐτοῦ | koinōnian tōn pathēmatōn autou | fellowship/sharing of his sufferings | participatory sharing in Christ’s sufferings | ”fellowship of his sufferings,” “sharing in his sufferings” | Believers participate in Christ’s sufferings as part of union with him | [BASELINE REUSE] ကိုယ်တော်၏ဆင်းရဲဒုက္ခတော်တွင် ပါဝင်ခြင်း (koyidaw i sin-yay-douk-kha-taw twin par-win-chin). κοινωνία = မိတ်သဟာယ-root (baseline “fellowship”). Risk: Medium-High, echoing the ဒုက္ခ (dukkha) sensitivity flagged at 1:29. |
| διώκω (3:12, 14) | διώκω δὲ | diōkō de | I press on, pursue | to run after, pursue, chase (athletic/hunting imagery) | “I press on,” “I pursue,” “I press toward” | Vigorous, disciplined forward pursuit of Christ — anchors “Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ” | [NEW TERM] ရှေ့သို့ရှုလျက် ပြေးလွှားနေခြင်း (shay-tho shu-lyet pyay-hlwar-nay-chin, “pressing/running forward”). Risk: Medium. Must be taught as pursuit of a Person already laying hold of the pursuer (v.12, “because Christ Jesus has laid hold of me”), i.e., grace-empowered pursuit, not self-effort toward self-attainment (as in disciplined progress toward one’s own enlightenment). |
| βραβεῖον (3:14) | τὸ βραβεῖον | to brabeion | the prize | the victor’s prize in an athletic contest | ”the prize,” “the goal” | The eschatological prize/reward secured in Christ | [NEW TERM — MEDIUM-HIGH] ဆုလာဘ် (su-lat, “prize/reward”). Risk: Medium-High. ဆုလာဘ် can carry connotations of a merit-reward (ကုသိုလ်ဆုလာဘ်) earned proportionally to religious effort. Must be taught as the grace-secured inheritance/goal of the upward call in Christ Jesus, not a reward earned in proportion to one’s own religious achievement. |
| σκοπός (3:14) | κατὰ σκοπὸν | kata skopon | toward the goal/mark | the target, the mark aimed at | ”toward the goal,” “toward the mark” | The single-minded aim of the Christian life: Christ himself and full conformity to him | [NEW TERM] ရည်မှန်းချက် (yi-hman-chet, “goal/aim”). Risk: Low. |
| πολίτευμα (3:20) | ἡμῶν γὰρ τὸ πολίτευμα ἐν οὐρανοῖς ὑπάρχει | hēmōn gar to politeuma en ouranois hyparchei | for our citizenship exists in the heavens | civic status, commonwealth, citizen-body membership | ”our citizenship is in heaven,” “we are citizens of heaven” | Believers’ true civic identity/allegiance belongs to heaven, not to any earthly polity — anchors “Citizenship in Heaven” | [NEW TERM — HIGH] ငါတို့၏နိုင်ငံသားခြင်းသည် ကောင်းကင်ဘုံ၌ ရှိ၏ (nga-do i nainggan-thar-chin thi kaung-gin-bon nai shi-i). Risk: High. Must be kept consistent with the πολιτεύεσθε rendering at 1:27. Must not be confused with rebirth into a heavenly deva-realm (တောင်စာ/နတ်ပြည်, deva-loka) attained through merit — this is a present legal and relational status (citizenship, cf. baseline “kingdom_of_god” doctrine) already possessed by grace through union with Christ, from which believers “await a Savior” (v.20b), not a future destination earned by accumulated good deeds. |
| σύμμορφος / μετασχηματίζω (3:21) | μετασχηματίσει τὸ σῶμα … σύμμορφον τῷ σώματι τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ | metaschēmatisei to sōma … symmorphon tō sōmati tēs doxēs autou | he will transform the body … conformed to the body of his glory | bodily transformation into conformity with Christ’s resurrected, glorified body | ”will transform our lowly bodies,” “conformed to his glorious body” | The believer’s future bodily resurrection, patterned on Christ’s own | [BASELINE REUSE] ဘုန်းတော်နှင့်ပြည့်စုံသော ကိုယ်တော်၏ကိုယ်ခန္ဓာနှင့် တူညီစေခြင်း (phon-taw hnin pyi-soun-thaw koyidaw i koyi-khanda hnin tunyi-say-chin). δόξα = ဘုန်းတော် (baseline “glory”). Risk: Critical, per baseline resurrection notes — a real, historical, bodily transformation, not rebirth into a different existence. |
Chapter 4 — Contentment, Peace, Gospel Partnership, Sacrificial Giving
| Term | Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Burmese rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| στέφανος (4:1) | στέφανός μου | stephanos mou | my crown | victor’s wreath/crown | ”my crown,” “my joy and crown” | The Philippians themselves are Paul’s reward/crown | [NEW TERM] ငါ၏သရဖူ (nga i thara-phu). Risk: Low. |
| ἐπιείκεια (4:5) | τὸ ἐπιεικὲς ὑμῶν | to epieikes hymōn | your gentleness/reasonableness | forbearance, gentleness, considerateness | ”your gentleness,” “your reasonableness” | Visible Christian gentleness toward all | [NEW TERM] နူးညံ့သိမ်မွေ့မှု (nu-nyan thein-mway-hmu). Risk: Low. |
| μεριμνᾶτε (4:6) | μηδὲν μεριμνᾶτε | mēden merimnate | be anxious about nothing | worry, anxious care, distress | ”do not be anxious,” “do not worry” | Prayer replaces anxiety as the response to every circumstance | [NEW TERM] စိုးရိမ်ပူပန်ခြင်း (mနã) (soe-yein-pu-pan-chin, “anxiety/worry” — used with prohibition). Risk: Medium. Related to “Contentment in All Circumstances”; must be paired correctly with the prayer/thanksgiving instruction that follows so anxiety-removal is understood as flowing from trust in God, not from stoic self-mastery. |
| εἰρήνη τοῦ θεοῦ (4:7) | ἡ εἰρήνη τοῦ θεοῦ | hē eirēnē tou theou | the peace of God | God’s own peace, guarding the heart and mind | ”the peace of God” | Peace as God’s own gift standing guard over the inner life — extends baseline “peace” doctrine | [BASELINE REUSE] ဘုရားသခင်၏ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်း (Phayarthakhin i nyein-thet-chin). εἰρήνη = ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်း (baseline, Medium). Risk: Medium, consistent with baseline peace_with_god notes — distinguish from meditative stilling of mental defilements (ကိလေသာငြိမ်းခြင်း) achieved through one’s own practice. |
| αὐτάρκης (4:11) | αὐτάρκης εἶναι | autarkēs einai | to be self-sufficient/content | contentment, satisfaction regardless of circumstance | ”content,” “self-sufficient” | The Stoic-sounding term Paul redefines: contentment sourced not in self-sufficiency but in Christ’s strength (v.13) — anchors “Contentment in All Circumstances” | [NEW TERM — HIGH] ရောင့်ရဲခြင်း / ကျေနပ်ခြင်း (yaung-yay-chin / kyay-nat-chin, “contentment/satisfaction”). Risk: High. Must be sharply distinguished from ဥပက္ခာ (upekkhā, Buddhist equanimity) and from the broader Buddhist ideal of detachment (စွဲလမ်းမှုကင်းခြင်း) achieved by extinguishing desire through disciplined practice. Paul’s contentment (v.11-13) is explicitly relational and Christ-dependent (“through him who strengthens me,” v.13) — a learned (ἔμαθον, v.11) posture sustained by an external Person, not a self-achieved inward state of desirelessness. Teaching note mandatory. |
| ἐνδυναμοῦντί με (4:13) | ἐν τῷ ἐνδυναμοῦντί με | en tō endynamounti me | in him who strengthens me | empowerment, infused strength from an outside source | ”who strengthens me,” “who gives me strength” | The relational source of contentment and endurance — Christ’s active, ongoing empowerment | [NEW TERM — HIGH] ငါ့ကိုခွန်အားပေးတော်မူသောသူ (nga-ko khun-ar-pay-taw-mu-thaw-thu). Risk: High, paired directly with the αὐτάρκης entry above; this phrase is the theological safeguard preventing Php 4:13 from being read as a generic self-help/self-empowerment slogan (a common popular misreading even in English) rather than dependence on Christ. |
| συγκοινωνήσαντές (4:14) | συγκοινωνήσαντές μου τῇ θλίψει | synkoinōnēsantes mou tē thlipsei | having shared/partnered with me in my affliction | joint participation, co-partnership | ”you shared with me in my trouble,” “you partnered with me” | Concrete financial/material partnership in gospel affliction — reinforces “Partnership in the Gospel” | [BASELINE-ADJACENT] ငါ၏ဒုက္ခတွင် ပါဝင်ဆောင်ရွက်ကြသည် (nga i douk-kha-twin par-win-saung-ywet-kya-thi). Builds on baseline κοινωνία (fellowship) root. Risk: Medium. |
| δόσις καὶ λῆψις (4:15) | εἰς λόγον δόσεως καὶ λήψεως | eis logon doseōs kai lēpseōs | in the matter of giving and receiving | a mutual exchange account, reciprocal partnership | ”in giving and receiving,” “the matter of giving and receiving” | Paul frames the Philippians’ financial support in the language of a shared partnership account, not a one-way charitable donation | [NEW TERM — HIGH] ပေးခြင်းခံယူခြင်း၏အကြောင်းအရာ (pay-chin khan-yu-chin i a-kyaung-a-yar). Risk: High. In Burmese Buddhist practice, ဒါန (dana, giving — especially to monks/the sangha) is the central merit-generating act of lay religious life, understood as a spiritually beneficial transaction that yields merit for the giver. Teaching note mandatory: the Philippians’ giving is gospel partnership flowing from an already-established grace relationship between fellow believers, not merit-generating dana offered to a religious institution or holy person in exchange for spiritual benefit. Flag for native speaker and theologian review. |
| ὀσμὴ εὐωδίας, θυσία δεκτή (4:18) | ὀσμὴν εὐωδίας, θυσίαν δεκτήν | osmēn euōdias, thysian dektēn | a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice | pleasing sacrificial offering, OT sacrificial imagery | ”a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice” | The Philippians’ gift described in the language of an OT sacrifice pleasing to God | [NEW TERM] မွှေးကြိုင်သော အနံ့ရှိသည့် လက်ခံဖွယ်ယဇ်ကောင် (mhway-kyaing-thaw a-nan-shi-thi let-khan-phwe yaza-kaung). Risk: Medium. Distinct from merit-offering/libation practice noted at 2:17 — same category of risk, requires the same teaching clarification (a relational thank-offering to a personal God, not a merit-generating ritual act). |
Summary of New Terms Requiring Language Package Addition
