Core Glossary

08 Core Glossary — Philippians

Destination Language: Burmese (Myanmar)

Purpose

This glossary lists every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, across all four chapters of Philippians, with proposed Burmese renderings, risk tiers, doctrine linkage, and citation of source chapters. Terms marked [BASELINE] reuse the Romans translation_memory.json rendering exactly, per the hard rule that established renderings must never be altered. Terms marked [NEW] are proposed additions for the Philippians language package extension and must be reviewed and ratified in Phase 1 Step 2 before Phase 2 translation begins.

Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions exactly:

  • Critical — Mistranslation destroys essential doctrine; mandatory human theologian review every occurrence.
  • High — Significant theological confusion/syncretism risk; mandatory human theologian review.
  • Medium — Reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning; native speaker review recommended.
  • Low — Minor imprecision; automated review sufficient.

Notes for Phase 1 Step 2 (Translation Memory Update)

  1. All [BASELINE] terms above are enforced exactly as recorded in the Romans translation_memory.json and require no further ratification.
  2. All [NEW] terms require formal addition to an updated translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json before Phase 2 translation of Philippians may proceed, per the Pre-flight Checklist in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
  3. The five Critical-risk new/adjacent terms (kenosis, form of God, equal with God, work out salvation, righteousness by faith vs. law reuse) must be routed to human theologian review on every occurrence without exception, consistent with the baseline’s escalation rules for Incarnation, Deity of Christ, and Grace-related doctrines.
  4. The kenosis term (ἐκένωσεν) requires an explicit, permanent forbidden substitution entry: never render with any compound of သုည (thonya/śūnyatā-emptiness) or အနတ္တ (anatta/no-self), to be added to the “CRITICAL FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTIONS” list in the AI translation requirements document alongside the existing Romans forbidden-substitution list.

Critical Risk Terms

Christ

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Khayitto
Doctrine: Christology

Established Myanmar Bible transliteration/compound term (‘the Anointed One’); pairs with jesus (ယေရှု) as ယေရှုခရစ်. Established since the Judson tradition per the baseline’s transliteration standards, formalized here as a standalone Philippians-package entry since Christ recurs constantly throughout the letter (used in nearly every chapter) and the baseline Romans TM only isolated ‘jesus’.

Conformed Transformed Body

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: phon-taw hnin pyi-soun-thaw koyidaw i koyi-khanda hnin tunyi-say-chin
Doctrine: Resurrection Hope of Believers
Category: Eschatology

Reuses baseline glory (ဘုန်းတော်) term. A real, historical, bodily transformation patterned on Christ’s own resurrection, never rebirth into a different existence within samsara. Philippians 3:21.

Equal With God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Phayarthakhin hnin tunyi-chin
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ဘုရားသခင်ကဲ့သို့ဖြစ်ခြင်း (merely like God), ဘုရားသခင်ထံမှကောင်းချီးခံရသူ (a blessed/derivative being)
Original: ἴσα θεῷ
Category: Christology

CRITICAL: must convey full ontological equality already and eternally possessed. Never render implying Christ merely considered and declined seizing equality (the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ New World Translation pattern), and never soften to a derivative, elevated-but-created status akin to a Brahma-realm deity. Philippians 2:6.

Father

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: a-pha
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives:
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

CRITICAL: never ဗြဟ္မာ (Brahma). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: 1:2, 2:11 (‘to the glory of God the Father’), 4:20.

Form Of God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Phayarthakhin i zar-ti-thanda
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ဘုရားသခင်၏ပုံသဏ္ဌာန် (mere outward shape), ဆင်းတု-adjacent rendering (idol-image association)
Original: μορφῇ θεοῦ
Category: Christology

Use ဇာတိသဏ္ဌာန် (essential nature/form), never plain ပုံသဏ္ဌာန် (shape/appearance), to avoid the idol-image (ဆင်းတု/ဘုရားပုံ) association. Names Christ’s actual essential divine being, not a crafted representation of it. Philippians 2:6.

God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Phayarthakhin
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original: θεός
Category: God

CRITICAL: never ဘုရား alone or နတ်သခင်. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Used throughout Philippians (1:2, 2:6, 2:9, 4:19, etc.).

Grace

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: kyayzu-taw
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation

CRITICAL: Never use ကုသိုလ် (kutho, accumulated Buddhist merit) or ကံကောင်းခြင်း (good karma/luck). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: shares its root with ἐχαρίσατο (2:9, the Father’s gracious bestowal on the Son) and ἐχαρίσθη (1:29, suffering itself granted as a gift) — never conflate with ကုသိုလ် even where grace appears in reward-language contexts.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: thangyinthaw weinnyin-taw
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives:
Category: God

CRITICAL: never ဝိညာဉ် alone or နတ်ဝိညာဉ်. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: 1:19, 2:1 (‘fellowship of the Spirit’), 3:3 (‘worship by the Spirit of God’).

Incarnation

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: lu-zarti khan-yu-chin
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives:

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: this is the direct scriptural ground of 2:7’s ‘being found in human likeness’ (ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος).

Jesus Christ Is Lord

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yayshu-khayit-thi thakhin-phyit-taw-mu-i
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Category: Christology

MANDATORY EXACT MATCH with the baseline Romans 10:9 confession pattern (ယေရှုသည် သခင်ဖြစ်တော်မူ၏), with ခရစ် inserted per this verse’s fuller title. Verbatim consistency required per the baseline’s cross-document Theological Consistency Rule. Never append a softening footnote suggesting a lesser or delegated lordship (reject Jehovah’s Witnesses’ New World Translation pattern). Philippians 2:11.

Jesus

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yayshu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology

Standard Myanmar Bible form since the Judson translation. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Used throughout Philippians (1:1, 2:10, 3:8, etc.).

Kenosis

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mimi-koyko sunlot-taw-mu-chin
Doctrine: Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: သုညဖြစ်သွားခြင်း (any thonya/śūnyatā-based compound), အနတ္တဆိုင်ရာ အသုံးအနှုန်း (anatta/no-self-based expression), ဘုရားလောင်းအဖြစ်မွေးဖွားခြင်း
Original: ἐκένωσεν
Category: Christology

CRITICAL, PERMANENT FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION: never render with any compound of သုည (thonya, void/emptiness, the śūnyatā root) or အနတ္တ (anatta, no-self) — Burmese Buddhist metaphysics’ two core categories. Such renderings would be heard as Christ’s self-dissolution, echoing anatta, rather than his voluntary setting-aside of the outward display of divine glory and prerogatives while remaining fully God. Must always be paired with an explicit teaching note: ‘Christ did not cease to be God.’ Route to mandatory human theologian review on every occurrence, Philippians 2:7.

Lord

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: thakhin
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Must convey exclusive supreme authority, not a merely respected teacher or earthly king. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: 2:11, 2:19, 2:24, 3:8, 3:20, 4:5; 2:11’s confession must match the Romans 10:9 pattern verbatim — see jesus_christ_is_lord entry.

Name Above Every Name

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: descriptive phrase; no fixed transliteration
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ကျော်ကြားသောအမည် (merely a famous name), ဂုဏ်သိက္ခာရှိသောဘွဲ့ (an honorable title)
Category: Christology

Functions as shorthand for the supreme divine name/title itself (κύριος, echoing YHWH/Isaiah 45:23), now openly borne by Jesus. Must never be flattened into merely a famous name or an honorable title, which would understate the assertion of Christ’s deity. Philippians 2:9.

Power Of Resurrection

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: koyidaw i hta-myauk-chin i tankhoe-taw
Doctrine: Resurrection Hope of Believers

Combines baseline resurrection (ထမြောက်ခြင်း) and power_of_god (တန်ခိုးတော်) roots. Present experiential power flowing from Christ’s historical bodily resurrection, never rendered with rebirth/reincarnation vocabulary. Philippians 3:10.

Resurrection

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: hta-myauk-chin
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Eschatology

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: 3:10-11 (‘power of his resurrection’), 3:21 (believers’ bodies conformed to Christ’s resurrected body).

Righteousness By Faith Vs Law

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pyinnat-tayar a-phyin-phyit-thaw pyaungmat-chin / Khayitto ko yunkyichin a-phyin-phyit-thaw pyaungmat-chin
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives:
Original: δικαιοσύνην τὴν ἐκ νόμου …
Category: Salvation

Reuses baseline righteousness/law/faith terms verbatim (mandatory, no deviation). Direct parallel to Romans 3-4; the merit-culture collision documented in the baseline applies with full force here, intensified by Paul’s autobiographical Pharisaic credential list. Route for mandatory human theologian review on every occurrence. Philippians 3:9.

Righteousness

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pyaungmat-chin
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives:
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation

CRITICAL: Never use ကုသိုလ်ကံ (merit-karma) or သီလ (moral precepts kept for merit). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: 3:9’s twin righteousness clauses (ἐκ νόμου / διὰ πίστεως) directly parallel Romans 3-4; exact reuse mandatory.

Salvation

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: kaetin-chin
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation

CRITICAL: NEVER use နိဗ္ဗာန်ရောက်ခြင်း (attaining nirvana/neikban). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: 1:19, 1:28, and especially 2:12 (‘work out your own salvation’) — see the work_out_salvation entry for the mandatory outworking-not-earning teaching note.

Work Out Salvation

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: kaetin-chin ko saung-ywet-chin
Doctrine: Sanctification and Working Out Salvation
Category: Salvation

CRITICAL — the single highest works/grace-collision risk in Philippians. Must always be taught as the outworking of a salvation already secured by grace (1:6, 2:13 ‘God who works in you’), never its procurement by effort; direct risk of mapping onto Route for mandatory human theologian review on every occurrence. Philippians 2:12.

High Risk Terms

Citizenship In Heaven

Approved rendering:

Category: Eschatology

A present, permanent, grace-secured relational and legal status already possessed through union with Christ now, never a future merit-earned heavenly rebirth destination that could itself expire. Must be rendered consistently between Philippians 1:27 and 3:20.

Contentment

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: yaung-yay-chin / kyay-nat-chin

Rejected alternatives: ဥပက္ခာ (upekkhā, equanimity achieved by extinguishing desire)
Original: αὐτάρκης
Category: Christian Living

Must be sharply distinguished from ဥပက္ခာ and from the broader Buddhist ideal of extinguishing desire through disciplined practice. Paul’s contentment is explicitly relational and Christ-dependent, a learned posture sustained by an external Person, not a self-achieved state of desirelessness. Philippians 4:11.

Every Knee Shall Bow

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: du shi-tha-myar nyut-ya-me
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ
Category: Christology

Kneeling/prostration is a familiar devotional posture in Burmese religious life directed toward Buddha images, monks, and elders — a genuine cultural bridge for the gesture, but the object must be taught as uniquely the living, exalted Lord Jesus, never extendable to any other venerated figure or image. Philippians 2:10.

Fellowship Of Sufferings

Transliteration: kyun i zar-ti-thanda
Doctrine: Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Original: μορφὴν δούλου
Category: Christology

Christ assumed the very nature/status of a slave, the lowest social status within humanity. Must be taught as voluntary, chosen self-lowering by one who was Lord of all, not comparable to debt-bondage or hereditary caste status; supplies the manner of the incarnation. Philippians 2:7.

Doctrine: Humanity of Christ
Category: Christology

Emphasizes Christ’s genuinely real, physically verifiable humanness. Must never be rendered suggesting an illusory or spirit-manifested appearance, as in some Burmese folk-narrative accounts of miraculous births. Philippians 2:8.

Giving And Receiving

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pay-chin khan-yu-chin
Doctrine: Partnership in the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: ဒါန (dana, merit-generating giving to monks/sangha)
Original: δόσις καὶ λῆψις

Gospel

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: thadin kaung
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation

Established Myanmar Bible term meaning ‘good news’. Must be qualified as the unique announcement of salvation through Christ, not any generic positive report. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: 1:5, 1:7, 1:12, 1:16, 1:27, 2:22, 4:3, 4:15 — anchors the Partnership in the Gospel doctrine as active, shared gospel investment, not passive goodwill.

Transliteration: a-htwet-a-htate-tin mya-shin-sar-taw-mu-chin

Holy

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: thangyin-thaw
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives:

Set apart for God and morally pure, not ritual/ceremonial cleanliness. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: underlies ‘saints’ (ἅγιοι, 1:1, 4:22) as those set apart in Christ.

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: hnoke-chi-thaw-seik / mimi-koyko hnoke-chi-taw-mu-chin
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη / ἐταπείνωσεν
Category: Church

In Burmese social hierarchy, self-lowering is expected of social inferiors toward superiors (junior to elder, layperson to monk) and can be misread as enforced submission. Must be taught as a voluntary Christlike disposition freely chosen by one who, like Christ, has genuine standing to claim — humility chosen from strength, not imposed from weakness. Philippians 2:3, 2:8.

Joy

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: wan-myauk-chin
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Rejected alternatives: ပီတိ (piti, meditative jhāna-rapture)
Original: χαρά / χαίρω
Category: Christian Living

Relational joy grounded in Christ and in others, not a private or self-generated meditative-attainment state; persists through, not by escaping, suffering. Anchor term of the letter’s central paradox. Philippians 1:4, 1:18, 1:25, 2:2, 4:4.

Original: γνῶσις Χριστοῦ
Category: Faith

Relational, personal knowledge of a self-revealing Person, surpassing all other value; not self-generated insight attained through one’s own disciplined meditative introspection. Philippians 3:8, 3:10.

Law

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pyinnat tayar
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives:
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant

Mosaic Law. ဝိနည်း specifically names the Buddhist monastic Vinaya and must be kept distinct. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: 3:5-9 contrasts confidence in law-righteousness with righteousness through faith.

Mature Perfect

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: soun-lin-thaw / yin-kyet-thaw
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
Rejected alternatives: ပါရမီ (pāramī, ten perfections cultivated across countless lifetimes)
Original: τέλειος
Category: Sanctification

PERMANENT FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION: never render with ပါရမီ or any cognate. Spirit-enabled maturity pursued within a single lifetime toward a goal secured by Christ’s resurrection, not merit-perfections accumulated across a chain of rebirths. Philippians 3:12, 3:15.

Obedience Of Faith

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: yunkyichin i nakhan-hmu

Doctrine: Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Category: Christology

Transliteration: yaza-kabaw nga-ko soun-laung-ya-thaw-lae
Doctrine: Suffering as a Grace-Given Gift
Original: σπένδομαι

Original: σκύβαλα
Category: Salvation

Paul’s deliberately crude, forceful term for the total worthlessness of his own former self-righteous credentials, set against knowing Christ — a direct rhetorical assault on merit-accumulation Must never be softened. Philippians 3:8.

Sanctification

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: thangyin-chin
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives:

The Spirit’s ongoing work of making believers holy. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians. Philippians usage: underlies 2:12-15’s ‘work out your salvation … blameless’ passage, distinct from self-directed moral self-improvement.

Doctrine: Servanthood and Christian Calling
Category: Christian Identity

The Prize

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: su-lat
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ

Category: Christology

ἁρπαγμόν is genuinely ambiguous in Greek scholarship (grasp at vs. hold onto/exploit). Approved rendering: a status Christ did not exploit for his own advantage. Record ‘grasp at’ as the alternative in the segment cache and flag for review given the Critical deity-of-Christ doctrine it touches. Philippians 2:6.
