Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Colossians
Purpose
This document maps every doctrine named in the Colossians doctrine_risk_registry.json to its supporting passages across the full book (chapters 1-4), states the specific translation risk for Burmese, and confirms the review routing tier. Colossians 1:15-20 (the Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ / Fullness of Deity) is the theological anchor of the curriculum but the analysis below covers the entire epistle, section by section, first verse to last.
Chapter 1 — Colossians 1:1-29
1:1-2 — Salutation
No new Critical/High doctrine introduced beyond baseline apostleship (Medium, reused from Romans) and grace/peace formula. Reviewed: no new doctrinal risk beyond terms already governed by baseline translation memory (တမန်တော်, ကျေးဇူးတော်, ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်း).
1:3-8 — Thanksgiving and the Gospel Bearing Fruit
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gospel | High | The gospel (သတင်းကောင်း) is described as bearing fruit “in the whole world” (1:6) and is explicitly equated with “the grace of God” — the Burmese rendering must not collapse into a regional teaching or a generically pleasant report; the grace-gospel linkage must survive translation intact. | Human theologian |
| Grace | Critical | Direct identification of gospel with ကျေးဇူးတော် reinforces the forbidden-substitution rule (never ကုသိုလ်/ကံကောင်းခြင်း) at a structurally important verse (1:6). | Human theologian |
| Thanksgiving | Low | Standard term; minor risk of collapsing into merit-dedication language. | Automated review |
| Faith | Medium | Object of faith (Christ Jesus, 1:4) must remain explicit. | Native speaker review |
1:9-14 — Prayer, Wisdom, Inheritance, Redemption
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wisdom and Knowledge in Christ | Medium | ပညာ overlaps with Buddhist paññā; must be taught as God-given/revealed, not self-cultivated insight. | Native speaker review |
| Prayer and Intercession | Medium | Direct access to God through Christ; distinguish from petitioning the 37 nats. | Native speaker review |
| Inheritance of the Saints | Medium | ”Inheritance of the saints in light” (1:12) must read as God’s given, decisive share, not a karmic lot accumulated toward better rebirth; the darkness-to-light “domain” transfer (1:13) is a rescue by another, not self-attained enlightenment. | Native speaker review |
| Kingdom of the Son | Medium | ”Kingdom of his beloved Son” (1:13) — present spiritual reign, not a territorial nainggan. | Native speaker review |
| Sonship of Christ | Critical | ”His beloved Son” (1:13) is the first Sonship reference in the book; must not read as a ranked being in nat/Brahma cosmology. | Human theologian |
| Redemption and Forgiveness | Critical | ”Redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (1:14) — price paid by Christ for the captive; never a merit-based self-liberation. | Human theologian |
| Sainthood and Saints | Medium | ”Saints in light” — not an ascetic elite. | Native speaker review |
1:15-20 — CORE PASSAGE: Supremacy, Sufficiency, Fullness of Deity, Reconciliation
This is the theological anchor of the entire curriculum. Every doctrine here is Critical.
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation | Critical | ”Image” (1:15), “firstborn” (1:15), “all things” (1:16-17), “before all things” (1:17), “hold together” (1:17), “preeminent” (1:18b) — သားဦး risks an Arian misreading (Christ as first-created being) unless v.16-17’s exhaustive creation/sustaining claims are retained as immediate co-text at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| Deity of Christ | Critical | ”Image of the invisible God” (1:15) must not read as an enlightened teacher elevated to Brahma-realm status through merit. | Human theologian |
| Sonship of Christ | Critical | 1:17’s “before all things” is the necessary safeguard establishing eternal preexistence, not mere rank within creation. | Human theologian |
| Christ as Head of the Church | Critical | ”Head of the body, the church” (1:18) — ဦးခေါင်း must carry both organic union and ruling authority simultaneously. | Human theologian |
| Resurrection of Christ | Critical | ”Firstborn from the dead” (1:18) — ထမြောက်ခြင်း root; never rebirth/samsara language. | Human theologian |
| Spiritual Warfare and Triumph over Powers | High | ”Thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities” created “through him and for him” (1:16) parallels the 37-nat hierarchy; all are subordinate creations, not independent powers. | Human theologian |
| Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | Critical | ”All the fullness [of God] was pleased to dwell in him” (1:19) — totality of God’s own nature, not a portion distributed among a spiritual hierarchy. | Human theologian |
| Reconciliation through the Cross | Critical | ”Reconcile to himself all things… making peace by the blood of his cross” (1:20) — God’s own initiative, not mutual negotiation or impersonal cosmic balance; the merism “heaven and earth” must remain exhaustive. | Human theologian |
1:21-23 — Reconciliation Applied to the Colossians
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reconciliation through the Cross | Critical | ”You… he has now reconciled” (1:21-22) applies the cosmic reconciliation of 1:20 personally; must retain God’s initiative language (“in the body of his flesh, through death”), reinforcing the bodily/historical nature of the reconciling act. | Human theologian |
| Faith | Medium | ”If indeed you continue in the faith” (1:23) — perseverance language must not be read as a probationary merit-tally. | Native speaker review |
| Gospel | High | ”the gospel that you heard” (1:23) reiterated. | Human theologian |
1:24-29 — Suffering, Mystery, and Gospel Ministry
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suffering for the Gospel | High | ”I rejoice in my sufferings” (1:24) — ဒုက္ခ vocabulary must be distinguished from the impersonal First-Noble-Truth dukkha; Paul’s suffering is personal, missional, and never adds to Christ’s sufficient atoning work. | Human theologian |
| Mystery of Christ Revealed to the Nations | High | ”The mystery hidden for ages… now revealed” (1:26-27) must always pair with “now revealed” so it is not read as endorsing an ongoing esoteric transmission (parallel: weizza/astrological hidden knowledge). | Human theologian |
| Assurance and Hope of Glory | Medium | ”Christ in you, the hope of glory” (1:27) — an already-accomplished personal guarantee, not aspiration toward an improved future rebirth-state. | Native speaker review |
| Wisdom and Knowledge in Christ | Medium | ”Teaching everyone with all wisdom” (1:28) — God-revealed, not self-attained. | Native speaker review |
| Church as God’s People | Medium | ”For the sake of his body, that is, the church” (1:24). | Native speaker review |
Chapter 2 — Colossians 2:1-23
2:1-5 — Paul’s Struggle for the Colossians’ Understanding
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mystery of Christ Revealed to the Nations | High | ”The mystery of God, namely, Christ” (2:2) — full assurance of understanding, again requiring the “revealed” pairing. | Human theologian |
| Wisdom and Knowledge in Christ | Medium | ”All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (2:3) hidden IN Christ, not attained through independent philosophical inquiry. | Native speaker review |
| Prayer and Intercession | Medium | Paul’s “struggle” (ἀγών) on their behalf, low doctrinal weight but connects to intercession pattern. | Native speaker review |
2:6-8 — Warning against Human Philosophy and Tradition
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | Critical | ”Philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world” (2:8) — ဒဿနအယူဝါဒ echoes the Buddhist philosophical term dassana; must name the specific Colossian error, not philosophy generally, and στοιχεῖα must be flagged as parallel to nats/astrology yet created and subordinate. | Human theologian |
| Faith | Medium | ”As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him” (2:6) — continuity of the same object of faith. | Native speaker review |
2:9-15 — Fullness of Deity, Union with Christ, Redemption
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | Critical | ”In him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily” (2:9) — the single most direct NT statement of Christ’s bodily deity; ကိုယ်ခန္ဓာအားဖြင့် must guard against any docetic reading. | Human theologian |
| Christ as Head of the Church / Supremacy | Critical | ”Head of all rule and authority” (2:10) reprises 1:16-18’s ဦးခေါင်း claim over cosmic powers. | Human theologian |
| Union with Christ | Critical | ”Circumcised… buried with him in baptism, raised with him” (2:11-12) — the compound “raised with Christ” builds on the baseline’s critical ထမြောက်ခြင်း root and must never shift toward rebirth/samsara language even in this derivative, corporate form. | Human theologian |
| Resurrection of Christ | Critical | ”Through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead” (2:12) restates the historical, once-for-all resurrection underlying the believer’s union. | Human theologian |
| Redemption and Forgiveness | Critical | ”Canceling the record of debt… nailing it to the cross” (2:13-14) — the certificate-of-debt image must be taught as fully and permanently canceled, not a karmic ledger gradually worked off. | Human theologian |
| Spiritual Warfare and Triumph over Powers | High | ”He disarmed the rulers and authorities… triumphing over them” (2:15) — Christ’s decisive, public defeat of hostile spiritual powers removes any need for protective ritual or astrological consultation. | Human theologian |
2:16-23 — Warning against Ascetic and Angel-Venerating Syncretism
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | Critical | ”Worship of angels” (2:18) parallels nat veneration; “self-made religion” and “asceticism/severity to the body” (2:23) parallel self-generated ascetic merit-practice central to lay and monastic Buddhist devotion; “shadow” vs. “substance” (2:17) distinguishes old covenant forms from the reality found only in Christ. This cluster carries the highest syncretism risk in the book. | Human theologian |
| Christ as Head of the Church | Critical | ”Not holding fast to the Head” (2:19) — the organic-nourishment sense of ဦးခေါင်း is essential here; losing connection to the Head is losing the source of the body’s growth. | Human theologian |
| Idolatry and Covetousness | High | Ascetic self-discipline detached from Christ is “of no value” — pastoral care needed given cultural respect for renunciate practice. | Human theologian |
Chapter 3 — Colossians 3:1-25
3:1-4 — Union with Christ and Future Hope
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Union with Christ | Critical | ”If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above” (3:1) — reordered loyalty, not escapism; “hidden with Christ in God” (3:3). | Human theologian |
| Resurrection of Christ | Critical | Continuation of the “raised with” compound from 2:12; must remain anchored to Christ’s historical resurrection. | Human theologian |
| Assurance and Hope of Glory | Medium | ”When Christ… appears, then you also will appear with him in glory” (3:4) — a guaranteed future disclosure, not an uncertain rebirth-improvement. | Native speaker review |
3:5-11 — Putting Off the Old Self
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | Critical | ”Put to death… put on the old self with its practices” (3:5, 9) — risk of flattening into gradual moral self-improvement paralleling progressive character-purification across a lifetime/lives, rather than a decisive, once-for-all identity change secured by union with Christ (2:12, 3:1). | Human theologian |
| Idolatry and Covetousness | High | ”Covetousness, which is idolatry” (3:5) names misplaced ultimate devotion; requires care given standard cultural reverence before Buddha images not locally regarded as pejorative idolatry. | Human theologian |
| Wrath of God and Judgment | High | ”The wrath of God is coming” (3:6) — personal righteous response to sin, not an impersonal law of karmic retribution. | Human theologian |
| Unity of Diverse Peoples in Christ | High | ”Renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator… no Greek and Jew… but Christ is all, and in all” (3:10-11) — challenges any notion of ethnic-majority or Buddhist-national religious priority within Myanmar’s own social dynamics. | Human theologian |
3:12-17 — Putting On the New Self
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | Critical | ”Put on then… compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience” (3:12) — Spirit-produced identity, not merit-cultivated virtue; same term for “humility” here is positive, contrasting with its censured use in 2:18,23 — context must disambiguate at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| Sanctification | High | ”As the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive” (3:13) — grounded in Christ’s finished forgiveness, not self-directed precept-keeping. | Human theologian |
| Sainthood and Saints | Medium | ”God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved” (3:12). | Native speaker review |
| Church as God’s People | Medium | ”The peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which… you were called in one body” (3:15); “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs” (3:16). | Native speaker review |
| Thanksgiving | Low | ”Be thankful” (3:15); “giving thanks to God the Father” (3:17). | Automated review |
| Lordship of Christ | Critical | ”In the name of the Lord Jesus” (3:17) — establishes the Lord-vocabulary that becomes theologically loaded in the household code immediately following. | Human theologian |
3:18-4:1 — Household Codes
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Household Codes | High | Wives/husbands, children/fathers, bondservants/masters (3:18-4:1) — Burmese cultural context already strongly reinforces hierarchical family structures through custom and Buddhist social ethics on filial/marital duty; the passage’s mutual, Christ-shaped qualifications (love without harshness, no embittering children, justice for masters) must not be lost by isolating submission commands into an unqualified one-directional hierarchy. | Human theologian |
| Lordship of Christ | Critical | The wordplay သခင် for both earthly master (3:22-4:1) and “the Lord” Christ (“fearing the Lord,” “you also have a Master in heaven,” 4:1) — if flattened, the passage’s point that all human authority answers to the true supreme Master is lost. | Human theologian |
Chapter 4 — Colossians 4:1-18
4:2-6 — Prayer, Mission, and Wise Speech toward Outsiders
| Doctrine | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prayer and Intercession | Medium | ”Continue steadfastly in prayer… praying also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word” (4:2-3) — reuses the mystery-of-Christ vocabulary from 1:26-27, 2:2. | Native speaker review |
| Mission and Evangelism | Medium | ”Walk in wisdom toward outsiders… let your speech always be gracious” (4:5-6) — သာသနာပြု vocabulary risk carried over from baseline; must read as gracious witness, not confrontational framing, given the real social/family cost of conversion in Myanmar. | Native speaker review |
| Wisdom and Knowledge in Christ | Medium | ”Walk in wisdom” (4:5) reuses ch.1 σοφία collision note. | Native speaker review |
4:7-18 — Personal Greetings and Closing Instructions
No new Critical or High risk doctrinal terms are introduced in this closing section. Reviewed in full: reuses ἐκκλησία (church, 4:15-16), βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ (kingdom of God, direct baseline reuse at 4:11), διάκονος (minister, 4:7,17), and the κύριος/δοῦλος household pairing already addressed at 3:22-4:1 (Onesimus, 4:9, read against the household-code doctrine already flagged Critical/High above). Doctrine coverage: Church as God’s People (Medium, native speaker review) for the greetings and house-church references (4:15-16); no additional entries required.

Critical Risk Doctrines
Christ as Head of the Church
Burmese name: အသင်းတော်၏ ဦးခေါင်းဖြစ်တော်မူသော ခရစ်တော်
Key terms: head, body, beginning
Review routing: Human theologian
ဦးခေါင်း must carry both organic union and ruling authority simultaneously; a rendering favoring only ‘leader’ loses the shared-life sense while one favoring only ‘topmost part’ loses Christ’s unrivaled authority over the church and over every cosmic power, an authority claim with direct relevance where competing spiritual authorities (nats, astrologers) are commonly consulted.
Deity of Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၏ဘုရားဇာတိ
Key terms: image, deity, bodily, fullness
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s co-equal, eternal divine nature must not be read as an enlightened human teacher elevated to a Brahma-realm deity through accumulated merit; ဘုရားဇာတိ requires teaching that this is full, undiminished deity, not honorific elevation.
Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၌ ကိုယ်ခန္ဓာအားဖြင့် ကျိန်းဝပ်တော်မူသော ဘုရားဇာတိ၏ ပြည့်စုံခြင်း
Key terms: fullness, deity, bodily, dwell, was pleased
Review routing: Human theologian
The single most direct New Testament statement of Christ’s full and bodily deity; ပြည့်စုံခြင်း must be taught as the totality of God’s own nature, not a portion of divine power distributed among a spiritual hierarchy (paralleling how Burmese folk cosmology distributes power across ranked nats), and ကိုယ်ခန္ဓာအားဖြင့် must guard against any docetic reading of Christ’s body as merely apparent or spiritual manifestation.
Grace
Burmese name: ကျေးဇူးတော်
Key terms: grace
Review routing: Human theologian
Grace as unearned favor cuts directly against the daily lay practice of merit-making (ကုသိုလ်ပြုခြင်း) shaping Burmese Buddhist religious life; the gospel is explicitly named ‘the grace of God’ (1:6), reinforcing the same forbidden-substitution rule (never ကုသိုလ်/ကံကောင်းခြင်း) established in the Romans baseline.
Lordship of Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၏အရှင်သခင်ဇာတိ
Key terms: lord, bondservant/master
Review routing: Human theologian
The household code’s deliberate wordplay uses သခင် for both earthly master and ‘the Lord’ Christ; if flattened, the passage’s point that all human authority answers to the true supreme Master is lost, and Christ’s exclusive supreme Lordship risks being read as merely one respected authority among many, as in Burmese religious life’s veneration of multiple figures.
Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Burmese name: လူဟောင်းကို ချွတ်ပယ်၍ လူသစ်ကို ဝတ်ဆင်ခြင်း
Key terms: old self, new self, being renewed, vice list, virtue list
Review routing: Human theologian
Risk of being flattened into a gradual moral self-improvement narrative paralleling a Buddhist path of progressive character-purification pursued across a lifetime or across lives, rather than a decisive, once-for-all change of identity secured by union with Christ’s death and resurrection (2:12, 3:1) that is then progressively lived out.
Reconciliation through the Cross
Burmese name: လက်ဝါးကပ်တိုင်အားဖြင့် ပြန်လည်ရင်ကြားစေ့ခြင်း
Key terms: reconcile, make peace, blood of the cross, heaven and earth reconciled, redemption, forgiveness of sins, certificate of debt
Review routing: Human theologian
ပြန်လည်ရင်ကြားစေ့ခြင်း (reconcile) must convey God’s own initiative restoring a hostile relationship to favor, not a mutual negotiated settlement between equal parties nor an impersonal restoration of social/cosmic harmony (ငြိမ်းချမ်းမှု) as sometimes conceived in Burmese custom; the certificate-of-debt image must likewise be taught as a fully and permanently canceled record, not a karmic ledger gradually worked off.
Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Burmese name: ရွေးနှင်းခြင်းနှင့် အပြစ်လွှတ်ခြင်း
Key terms: redemption, forgiveness of sins, sin
Review routing: Human theologian
ရွေးနှင်းခြင်း (a price-paid release from captivity) must never be confused with a merit-based self-liberation; the price is paid by another (Christ, via his blood, 1:20), for the captive, not accumulated by the captive’s own effort as in karmic self-improvement frameworks.
Resurrection of Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၏ ထမြောက်ခြင်း
Key terms: resurrection, firstborn from the dead, raised with Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
ထမြောက်ခြင်း must never shift toward ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း (rebirth into samsara) in any of its forms in this book, including the derivative ‘raised with Christ’ compound; Christ’s bodily resurrection is unique, historical, and once-for-all, the guarantee and pattern for believers, not entry into a new cycle of existence.
Sonship of Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၏သားတော်ဇာတိ
Key terms: kingdom of the Son, father, before all things
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s eternal, unique Sonship (the Father’s ‘beloved Son,’ 1:13) must not be read as a metaphorical title or as a ranked being within the nat-spirit hierarchy or Brahma cosmology; πρὸ πάντων (1:17) is the necessary safeguard establishing his preexistence, not merely his rank within creation.
The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Burmese name: ဖန်ဆင်းခြင်းအပေါ် ခရစ်တော်၏ အထွဋ်အထက်ဖြစ်ခြင်းနှင့် လုံလောက်ခြင်း
Key terms: image, firstborn, all things, before all things, hold together, preeminent
Review routing: Human theologian
သားဦး (firstborn) risks being read through ordinary Burmese kinship usage as denoting birth order, suggesting Christ is the first being God created rather than holding supreme rank and inheritance-right over creation; this Arian-style misreading is already documented in some Myanmar contexts and must be corrected by the immediate co-text of v.16-17 at every occurrence.
Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်နှင့်အတူ သေခြင်းနှင့် ထမြောက်ခြင်းအားဖြင့် တစ်လုံးတစ်ဝတည်း ဖြစ်ခြင်း
Key terms: baptism, buried with Christ, raised with Christ, circumcision, hidden with Christ, things above, be revealed
Review routing: Human theologian
The compound ‘raised with Christ’ (အတူ ထမြောက်ခြင်း) builds on the baseline’s critical resurrection term ထမြောက်ခြင်း and must never shift toward ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း (rebirth into samsara) even in this derivative form; the union is with Christ’s own one-time historical resurrection, not entry into a new personal cycle of existence.
Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Burmese name: မှားယွင်းသောသွန်သင်ချက်နှင့် ဘာသာရေးရောနှောခြင်းအား သတိပေးချက်
Key terms: tradition of men, philosophy, elemental spirits, cosmic powers, self-made religion, worship of angels, asceticism, disarm powers, triumph over powers, shadow and substance
Review routing: Human theologian
This doctrine cluster carries the highest syncretism risk of any book yet processed for Burmese: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου directly parallels the folk-religious system of nats and astrological powers (ဗေဒင်) believed to govern fortune and health; θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων parallels intermediary spirit-veneration for protection; ἐθελοθρησκία and ἀφειδία σώματος parallel self-generated ascetic merit-practice central to lay and monastic Buddhist devotion; φιλοσοφία’s Burmese rendering ဒဿနအယူဝါဒ echoes the Buddhist philosophical term dassana. Every occurrence requires explicit teaching that all such powers and practices are created, subordinate, and already defeated or superseded in Christ.
High Risk Doctrines
Gospel
Burmese name: သတင်းကောင်း
Key terms: gospel, bear fruit
Review routing: Human theologian
Must be distinguished from any generic pleasant report; the gospel is the unique proclamation now bearing fruit throughout the whole world, not a regional teaching among others.
Household Codes
Burmese name: အိမ်ထောင်စု ကျင့်ဝတ်များ
Key terms: household submission, bondservant/master, lord
Review routing: Human theologian
Burmese cultural context already strongly reinforces hierarchical family structures and gendered household roles through both traditional custom and Buddhist social ethics on filial and marital duty; teaching must preserve the passage’s own mutual, Christ-shaped qualifications (love without harshness on husbands, no embittering of children on fathers, justice on masters) rather than isolating the submission commands into an unqualified one-directional hierarchy.
Idolatry and Covetousness
Burmese name: ရုပ်ပွားကိုးကွယ်ခြင်းနှင့် လောဘလွန်ကျူးမှု
Key terms: idolatry, vice list
Review routing: Human theologian
Paul names covetousness itself idolatry - misplaced ultimate devotion of any kind. The everyday Burmese religious landscape includes reverence before Buddha images as standard cultural practice not locally regarded as pejorative idolatry; pastoral application requires care to avoid blanket denunciation of image-related cultural practice while still naming the biblical category precisely.
The Mystery of Christ Revealed to the Nations
Burmese name: လူမျိုးအပေါင်းတို့အား ဖွင့်ပြတော်မူသော ခရစ်တော်၏ နက်နဲသောအရာတော်
Key terms: mystery, gentiles, open door
Review routing: Human theologian
Must always pair with ‘now revealed’ so the term is not read as endorsing an exclusive esoteric transmission tradition, comparable to Burmese weizza (esoteric adept) practice or astrological hidden knowledge reserved for an initiated elite - precisely what Colossians is written to refute.
Sanctification
Burmese name: သန့်ရှင်းခြင်း
Key terms: holy, humility, being renewed, old self, new self, virtue list
Review routing: Human theologian
The Spirit’s ongoing work of remaking believers after Christ’s image, not a self-directed discipline of precept-keeping and meditation practiced to purify one’s own mind, and not the same performative ‘humility’ censured in chapter 2.
Christ’s Triumph over Hostile Spiritual Powers
Burmese name: ရာဇပလ္လင်များနှင့် အထွဋ်အာဏာများအပေါ် ခရစ်တော်၏ အောင်ပွဲ
Key terms: cosmic powers, disarm powers, triumph over powers, elemental spirits
Review routing: Human theologian
Directly addresses the fear of and need to propitiate the thirty-seven nats and other spirit-powers pervasive in Burmese folk religion; must be taught that Christ has already publicly and decisively defeated every hostile spiritual power, removing any need for protective ritual or astrological consultation.
Suffering for the Gospel
Burmese name: သတင်းကောင်းအတွက် ဆင်းရဲဒုက္ခခံခြင်း
Key terms: afflictions
Review routing: Human theologian
ဒုက္ခ names the impersonal, pervasive unsatisfactoriness of the First Noble Truth inherent in all conditioned existence; Paul’s afflictions are personal, missional, meaningful suffering endured for Christ’s sake and the church’s benefit, categorically distinct from existential dukkha inherent to samsara, and must never be read as adding to the sufficiency of Christ’s own atoning work.
Unity of Diverse Peoples in Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၌ လူမျိုးစုအားလုံး၏ စည်းလုံးခြင်း
Key terms: ethnic categories dissolved, gentiles
Review routing: Human theologian
Extends the baseline’s Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine; ‘Christ is all, and in all’ challenges any notion that ethnic-majority or Buddhist-national religious identity carries inherent priority over minority ethnic or religious groups within Myanmar’s own social dynamics, and must be rendered with full theological clarity.
The Wrath and Impartial Judgment of God
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်၏ အမျက်တော်နှင့် တရားမျှတသော စီရင်ချက်
Key terms: wrath of God
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s personal, righteous response to sin must not collapse into an impersonal cosmic law of retributive consequence, a collision risk with karmic-retribution framing pervasive in Burmese religious thought.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Assurance and the Hope of Glory
Burmese name: ဘုန်းတော်၏ မျှော်လင့်ခြင်းနှင့် သေချာအာမခံမှု
Key terms: hope, glory, hidden with Christ, be revealed
Review routing: Native speaker review
Assurance rests on Christ’s finished work and future appearing, an already-accomplished personal guarantee, not on an uncertain running merit-tally determining one’s next rebirth or on aspiration toward an improved future state.
Church as God’s People
Burmese name: ဘုရားသခင်၏လူစုအဖြစ် အသင်းတော်
Key terms: church, body of church, minister, fellow servant, psalms hymns songs
Review routing: Native speaker review
A new-covenant community united to Christ as body to head, not a monastery-centered religious institution organized around a resident sangha.
Faith
Burmese name: ယုံကြည်ခြင်း
Key terms: faith
Review routing: Native speaker review
Same cognate-concept risk as documented in the Romans baseline (သဒ္ဓါ); the object of faith (Christ) must remain explicit at every occurrence.
Inheritance of the Saints
Burmese name: သန့်ရှင်းသူတို့၏ အမွေအနှစ်
Key terms: inheritance, domain of darkness, light
Review routing: Native speaker review
The believer’s inheritance and the light/darkness dominion-transfer must be taught as God’s given, decisive rescue, not a karmic ‘share’ accumulated toward a better rebirth-lot or a gradual self-attained enlightenment out of the darkness of ignorance.
Kingdom of the Son
Burmese name: ချစ်တော်မူသော သားတော်၏ နိုင်ငံတော်
Key terms: kingdom of the Son, kingdom of God
Review routing: Native speaker review
Distinguish the Son’s present spiritual reign into which believers are transferred from a territorial or political nainggan.
Mission and Evangelism
Burmese name: သတင်းကောင်း ဟောပြောခြင်းနှင့် သာသနာပြုခြင်း
Key terms: mission, open door, walk in wisdom, salt speech
Review routing: Native speaker review
သာသနာပြု carries a Buddhist-institutional flavor (propagating the Buddha’s Sasana); native-speaker review should confirm the surrounding context makes clear this is gracious, wise gospel witness toward outsiders, not confrontational framing or Sasana-style institution-building, especially sensitive given the real social and family cost of conversion from Buddhism.
Prayer and Intercession
Burmese name: ဆုတောင်းခြင်းနှင့် ဆက်ကူးအသနားခံခြင်း
Key terms: prayer, watch, struggle
Review routing: Native speaker review
Direct access to God in Christ’s name; distinguish from propitiating or petitioning the thirty-seven nats for protection or favor.
Sainthood (Called to be Holy)
Burmese name: သန့်ရှင်းသူအဖြစ် ခေါ်တော်မူခြင်း
Key terms: saints, holy
Review routing: Native speaker review
All believers are saints; not an ascetic elite comparable to a ရဟန္တာ who has personally achieved enlightenment through monastic discipline.
Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ
Burmese name: ခရစ်တော်၌ ဝှက်ထားသော ပညာနှင့်အသိပညာ
Key terms: wisdom, understanding, full knowledge, walk in wisdom
Review routing: Native speaker review
ပညာ overlaps with Buddhist paññā (liberating insight attained through the Noble Eightfold Path); true wisdom in Colossians is God-given and revealed in Christ, not self-cultivated insight into the nature of existence.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving
Burmese name: ကျေးဇူးတင်ခြင်း
Key terms: thanksgiving, be thankful
Review routing: Automated review
Standard term; minor risk of collapsing into generic ritual merit-dedication language.
