Linguistic Gap Analysis
06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — 2 John (English–Burmese)
Purpose and Method
This analysis identifies where Burmese (Myanmar) lacks adequate native vocabulary for 2 John’s theological content, where existing Burmese religious vocabulary is “crowded” by competing Theravada Buddhist and folk-religious senses that must be fenced off, and where transliteration is preferable to paraphrase. It extends — and does not contradict — the baseline Romans translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, and doctrine_risk_registry.json. Every term already fixed by the baseline (God, Father, Jesus, Christ, Grace, Peace, Incarnation, Son, Election, Fellowship) is reused exactly and is noted below only where 2 John activates it in a new configuration.
Full-book coverage statement: 2 John is one chapter of 13 verses. Every verse (1:1–1:13) has been reviewed for terminology and doctrinal content. The core passage (1:4–11) is the theological anchor of the curriculum but not the boundary of this analysis; the epistolary frame (1:1–3, 1:12–13) is examined below and explicitly noted where it contributes no new terms.
1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix
| Doctrine | Available Burmese Terms | Weaknesses / Gaps | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walking in Truth and Love | သမ္မာတရား (truth), ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ (love), ပညတ်တော် (commandment), ကျင့်ကြံလျှောက်လှမ်းခြင်း (walk/conduct) | သမ္မာ shares a root with Pali sammā (the Noble Eightfold Path’s “right” — Sammā-diṭṭhi, Sammā-sīla), inviting a graded-path reading rather than a singular, Christ-identified reality. မေတ္တာ is one of the Four Brahmavihāra — a self-cultivated, impartial, meditative goodwill entirely detachable from relationship, command, or doctrine. Burmese has no single native term that already carries “willed, commanded, doctrinally-conditioned love” as opposed to “impartially radiated compassion.” | Retain သမ္မာတရား and ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ as established Myanmar Christian usage (no viable substitute exists), but mandate a recurring teaching gloss at every occurrence: truth = the one reality embodied in Christ and apostolic teaching (not one right view among several); love = obedience-shaped, command-defined self-giving toward the covenant community (not self-generated impartial radiation). Keep ပညတ်တော် visibly distinct from the baseline’s ပညတ်တရား (Mosaic Law) at every joint occurrence. |
| Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း (incarnation, reused Critical baseline term), လှည့်ဖြားသူ (deceiver), ဝန်ခံခြင်း (confess), အန္တိခရစ် (Antichrist, transliterated), လောက (world) | Burmese religious narrative supplies two competing “divine descent” patterns — ဘုရားလောင်း birth cycles (Jataka) and နတ်ဆင်းသက်ခြင်း (nat-spirit descent/possession) — both already forbidden by the baseline. 2 John 1:7 is the letter’s doctrinal center and the single verse where this collision is most acute, since it names the denial of the incarnation as the defining mark of deception itself. လောက (loka) is embedded in a tiered-rebirth cosmology (kāma-/rūpa-/arūpa-loka). | Reuse the baseline’s လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း without variation; mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence of 1:7, matching the baseline’s resurrection-note protocol. Transliterate Antichrist (အန္တိခရစ်) rather than paraphrase, to avoid producing a generic “enemy” reading. Gloss လောက on first use in this curriculum as the single, present, fallen created order, not a rebirth-realm tier. |
| Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | အိမ်တွင်လက်ခံခြင်း (receive into house), နှုတ်ဆက်ခြင်း (greet), ပါဝင်ဆက်ဆံခြင်း (share in evil works), သတိပြုကြလော့ (watch yourselves) | Burmese culture (Buddhist and pre-Buddhist alike) places extremely high positive value on hospitality to any guest, especially religious teachers and wandering monks (ဆွမ်းကျွေးခြင်း-style hospitality norms). A flat, unqualified prohibition on “receiving” risks either being read as a blanket command against ordinary kindness (culturally jarring and doctrinally wrong) or being ignored as impractical. There is no existing Burmese religious vocabulary distinguishing “ordinary hospitality” from “doctrinal sponsorship/endorsement.” | Do not translate 1:10–11 as a general anti-hospitality command. Frame အိမ်တွင်လက်ခံခြင်း specifically as formal sponsorship/endorsement of an itinerant teacher’s mission and message, contrasted explicitly with Romans 12:13’s positive hospitality mandate already in the baseline curriculum. Keep ပါဝင်ဆက်ဆံခြင်း visually and lexically distinct from the baseline’s positive မိတ်သဟာယ (fellowship) so believers never read “sharing in evil” as a form of blessed communion. |
| Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | တည်နေခြင်း (abide/remain), သွန်သင်ချက် (teaching of Christ), ကျော်လွန်သွားသည် (progress beyond), ဆုလာဘ်အပြည့် (full reward), ဆုံးရှုံးခြင်း (lose/forfeit) | တည်နေခြင်း has no automatic collision, but Burmese Buddhist meditative vocabulary (samatha/jhāna “abiding” states, e.g. ဈာန်တည်ငြိမ်ခြင်း) offers a strong nearby analogy of self-produced contemplative absorption that could be silently substituted in popular preaching. ဒေသနာ (the standard word for a monk’s dhamma sermon) is the “obvious” nearby term for “teaching” but frames Christ’s teaching as one more sermon-genre. ဆု carries strong merit-reward connotations (ကောင်းကျိုးဆု). ကျော်လွန်သွားသည် reads by default as a positive, not ironic, “advancing.” | Avoid ဒေသနာ; retain သွန်သင်ချက် with an explicit note that this is a fixed, complete body of apostolic content, not open to supplementation. Retain တည်နေခြင်း but require a teaching note distinguishing relational, evidence-bearing abiding in received teaching from self-produced meditative absorption. Require the ironic frame to be carried by surrounding sentence structure (not by ကျော်လွန်သွားသည် alone) so 1:9’s warning is not misread as praise. Keep ဆုလာဘ်အပြည့် fenced against ကောင်းကျိုးဆု framing at every use. |
2. Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods
2a. Genuinely Missing Vocabulary (no adequate native term exists)
| Concept | Gap | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Antichrist (ἀντίχριστος) as a specific christological category | No native Burmese term names “one who sets himself up in Christ’s place by denying his incarnation.” Descriptive paraphrase (e.g. “enemy of religion,” “false one”) loses the specific referent entirely. | Transliterate: အန္တိခရစ်. See Section 3 below. |
| ”Elect lady” (κυρία) as an ambiguous individual/corporate address | Burmese has respectful address terms for women of standing (အရှင်မ, သခင်မ) but none that natively carry the individual-vs-personified-congregation ambiguity the Greek preserves. | Render အရှင်မ (not built on သခင်, reserved for Christ’s exclusive Lordship) and carry the ambiguity via a mandatory translator’s note rather than forcing a premature resolution into the Burmese text itself. |
| ”Full reward” (μισθὸν πλήρη) as a non-merit-based eschatological category | Burmese vocabulary for reward/recompense is saturated by karmic-merit framing (ဆု, ကျေးဇူးဆု, ကောင်းကျိုးဆု). No neutral term exists that names “the fruit of grace-empowered perseverance” without also sounding like merit accumulation. | Retain ဆုလာဘ်အပြည့် but require the mandatory grace/merit fencing note at every occurrence (see baseline’s existing grace-vs-kutho protocol, extended here). |
2b. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods Requiring Fencing
| Burmese Term | Curriculum Sense Needed | Competing Neighbor(s) | Fencing Note Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| သမ္မာတရား (truth) | The singular reality embodied in Christ/apostolic gospel | သမ္မာ-ဒိဋ္ဌိ (Right View, one limb of the Eightfold Path) | Teach as the truth, not one correct stage among eight; not a graded achievement. |
| ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ (love) | Willed, commanded, relationally-defined self-giving | မေတ္တာ as Brahmavihāra — self-cultivated, impartial, meditatively radiated goodwill detached from relationship or command | Teach as obedience-shaped love toward a specific community under a specific command, not impersonal, self-generated radiation. Escalate to mandatory theologian review every occurrence, per Critical tier. |
| ကရုဏာတော် (mercy) | Personal divine compassion toward those needing rescue | ကရုဏာ as Brahmavihāra — self-cultivated compassion, impartially extended | Teach as freely-given divine initiative from a personal God, not self-produced meditative virtue. |
| လောက (world) | The single, present, morally fallen created order | Loka as tiered cosmological realm (kāma-/rūpa-/arūpa-loka) within samsara | Gloss as the one present created order opposed to God, not a rebirth-realm tier. |
| ဆုလာဘ်အပြည့် (full reward) | Fruit of grace-empowered perseverance | ဆု as karmic merit-reward (ကောင်းကျိုးဆု) | Fence against implying reward earns or secures salvation itself; salvation remains by grace alone per baseline. |
| တည်နေခြင်း (abide) | Relational, evidence-bearing abiding in apostolic teaching | Samatha/jhāna “abiding” — self-produced meditative absorption | Teach as relational fidelity to received teaching, evidenced in life, not a contemplative attainment state. |
| ဝန်ခံခြင်း (confess) | Public, verbal affirmation of a specific christological fact | Generic private “belief” or acknowledgment | Teach as public declaration, parallel to the baseline’s Romans 10:9 confession pattern. |
| ပါဝင်ဆက်ဆံခြင်း (share in evil works) | Becoming complicit in a false teacher’s evil deeds through endorsing hospitality | မိတ်သဟာယ (fellowship — the baseline’s positive κοινωνία term, Low risk) | Keep visibly distinct lexically from မိတ်သဟာယ; never let “sharing in evil” read as a form of blessed communion. |
| အသက်ကြီးသူ (elder, self-designation) | A recognized apostolic/church-office self-designation | ဆရာတော် / ဘုန်းတော်ကြီး — monastic seniority titles | Note this is New Testament church office language, not a monastic rank, paralleling the baseline’s rejection of ဆရာတော် for “apostle.” |
| ပညတ်တော် (commandment, singular relational directive) | Christ’s/the Father’s specific relational directive to love | ပညတ်တရား — the baseline’s fixed term for the Mosaic Law/Torah | Keep the two terms visibly distinct in any lesson where both could appear; note the different scope (a specific directive vs. the entire Law). |
3. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions
| Term | Decision | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Antichrist (ἀντίχριστος) | Transliterate — အန္တိခရစ် | No Burmese descriptive paraphrase preserves the specific christological referent (one who denies/opposes/substitutes for the true Christ). Paraphrases like “enemy of the truth” collapse into a generic moral category and lose the doctrinal anchor to 1:7. Matches established Myanmar Bible practice in Revelation and 1 John. |
| Christ / Messiah component (Χριστός) | Retain established transliteration — ခရစ်တော် | Already fixed as authoritative baseline usage (see 12_ai_translation_requirements.md transliteration standards); not re-decided here, only confirmed as applicable to 2 John’s five occurrences (1:3, 1:7 x2, 1:9 x2). |
| Elder (πρεσβύτερος, self-designation) | Paraphrase, not transliterate — အသက်ကြီးသူ | A Greek-derived transliteration would be opaque to readers and would not carry the New Testament church-office sense at all; a native descriptive phrase is required, fenced against monastic-title collision (Section 2b). |
| Incarnation concept (ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί) | Paraphrase (compound descriptive phrase), not transliterate — လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း | Reused exactly from baseline; a transliteration of the Greek phrase would be meaningless to a Burmese reader, whereas the existing compound already carries the correct “took on/received human nature, once” sense established across the Romans curriculum. |
| Teaching of Christ (διδαχή) | Paraphrase, not transliterate or loan from Pali — သွန်သင်ချက် | A Pali-loan option (ဒေသနာ) exists but is rejected as a paraphrase choice because it frames Christ’s teaching within the Buddhist sermon-genre; the native compound သွန်သင်ချက် avoids that genre-collision while remaining comprehensible. |
| Truth (ἀλήθεια) | Retain existing Myanmar Christian term, not re-coin — သမ္မာတရား | Already deeply established in Myanmar Bible usage (used extensively in John’s Gospel/Epistles); inventing a new coinage to avoid the Pali sammā collision would break consistency with existing Myanmar Christian literature the target audience already reads. Fence with a teaching note instead of replacing the term. |
| Abba-style retained transliteration precedent | Not applicable in 2 John — no Aramaic terms of address occur in this letter | Noted for completeness; the baseline’s Abba precedent (Romans 8:15) does not recur here. |
General principle applied: Transliterate only where (a) no Burmese descriptive phrase can carry the specific doctrinal referent without collapsing into a broader or wrong category, and (b) an established Myanmar Bible transliteration precedent already exists for the same or a closely related term (Antichrist follows the Messiah/Metteyya-avoidance logic already set by the baseline). Paraphrase everywhere a native compound can be fenced with a teaching note instead.
4. Ranked List of This Letter’s Highest-Risk Ambiguities
-
2 John 1:7 — Incarnation denial / “Antichrist.” The single highest-risk verse in the letter. The confession that Jesus Christ “comes in the flesh” collides simultaneously with two distinct Burmese religious frames (Jataka-cycle Buddha-to-be birth; nat-spirit descent/possession), and the term “Antichrist” risks flattening into a generic “bad person/enemy of religion” if not transliterated and taught. Compounded risk: this verse is also this letter’s doctrinal anchor for the whole “Warning against Deceivers” doctrine. Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence, no exceptions.
-
2 John 1:5-6 — Love (ἀγάπη) defined by commandment-keeping. ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ risks silent substitution with the Brahmavihāra sense of self-cultivated, impartial, meditative goodwill, especially because the surrounding verses explicitly link love to obedience — a linkage that has no parallel in the Buddhist metta framework, where metta is generated internally and radiated without reference to command or relationship. This is the letter’s most theologically load-bearing term after the incarnation itself.
-
2 John 1:9 — “Abide” (μένω) and “goes ahead” (προάγω) together. The verse’s entire force depends on holding an ironic tension: claimed doctrinal “progress” beyond Christ’s teaching is actually a failure to abide, resulting in not having God at all. If ကျော်လွန်သွားသည် is read positively (as ordinary Burmese usage would default to) and တည်နေခြင်း is read as a self-produced contemplative state, the verse’s warning inverts into an affirmation of “moving on” from fixed teaching — precisely the opposite of Johannine intent.
-
2 John 1:10-11 — Hospitality command vs. Burmese cultural hospitality norms. High risk not of doctrinal corruption but of pastoral misapplication: a flat rendering risks either being rejected by target audiences as culturally impossible/rude, or being over-applied to justify general inhospitality toward any stranger or minority-group visitor, which would contradict the wider curriculum’s Romans 12:13 hospitality mandate and create internal contradiction across documents.
-
2 John 1:1, 1:13 — “Elect lady” / “elect sister” individual-vs-corporate identity. Lower doctrinal stakes than 1–4 above (the election theology itself is secure via the baseline’s ရွေးကောက်ခြင်း), but the unresolved referent (a named individual, a personified local congregation, or both) affects how “children” (1:1, 1:4, 1:13) should be taught and could cause confusion if resolved inconsistently across lesson materials.
-
2 John 1:8 — “Full reward” (μισθός) and merit-adjacent vocabulary. Real but contained risk: ဆု’s merit-reward connotation is well precedented and already fenced by the baseline’s grace/merit protocol; the primary danger is inconsistent application of that fencing note across lesson writers rather than an inherent unfixable term problem.
-
2 John 1:7 — “World” (κόσμος) as cosmological-tier collision. Real but lower risk than the above because လောက is already a long-established Myanmar Bible term (John 3:16) with substantial existing catechetical reinforcement; the tiered-cosmology collision is present but less acute than the incarnation/love/perseverance risks above.
5. Verse-by-Verse Coverage Confirmation (Full Book, 1:1–13)
| Verse(s) | New Terminology / Doctrinal Load | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Elder, elect lady, children, truth (root doctrine of election/church identity) | Reviewed — terms addressed in Sections 1–3 above |
| 1:2 | Truth (permanence, ages/forever) | Reviewed — see “age/forever” fencing note, Section 2b |
| 1:3 | Grace, mercy, peace (greeting triad), Father, Son, Jesus Christ | Reviewed — grace/peace reused exactly from baseline; mercy newly fenced (Section 2b) |
| 1:4 | Truth, walk, children (rejoicing over faithful conduct) | Reviewed — Section 1 |
| 1:5 | Commandment, love, lady (address) | Reviewed — Sections 1–2 |
| 1:6 | Love defined as commandment-keeping; walk (x2) | Reviewed — ranked ambiguity #2 above |
| 1:7 | Deceiver, world, confess, incarnation, Jesus Christ, Antichrist | Reviewed — ranked ambiguity #1 above (highest-risk verse in the letter) |
| 1:8 | Watch yourselves, lose/forfeit, full reward | Reviewed — ranked ambiguity #6 above |
| 1:9 | Progress beyond, abide, teaching of Christ, Father, Son | Reviewed — ranked ambiguity #3 above |
| 1:10 | Receive into house, greet (withheld benediction) | Reviewed — ranked ambiguity #4 above |
| 1:11 | Greet, share in evil works, evil works | Reviewed — Section 2b |
| 1:12 | Rejoice/χαίρω word family echo (joy fulfilled); epistolary convention (paper and ink) | Reviewed — no new doctrinal terms; wordplay-loss note only (see core glossary rejoice_greet_word_family entry) |
| 1:13 | Elect sister, children (parallel to 1:1) | Reviewed — same individual/corporate ambiguity as 1:1; no additional new terms |
No verse in 2 John was found to introduce doctrinal vocabulary outside the scope already catalogued in this analysis and the accompanying core glossary. Verses 1:12–13 are explicitly confirmed as contributing no new load-bearing terminology beyond echoes/parallels of terms already treated above.
6. Summary Recommendation for Phase 2 Handoff
- Add all “New (2 John)” terms from
analysis/08_core_glossary.mdto translation memory with the risk tiers and fencing notes established in Sections 1–3 above before any Phase 2 segment translation begins. - Treat 2 John 1:7 with the same mandatory-theologian-review weight the baseline assigns to Romans’ resurrection and Son-of-God passages; treat 1:5-6 (love) with the same weight the baseline assigns to grace.
- Carry forward the hospitality fencing note (Section 1, Section 2b) into any Phase 2 instruction set addendum, explicitly cross-referencing Romans 12:13 to prevent apparent internal contradiction across the full curriculum library.
- Flag 1:1 and 1:13 (“elect lady”/“elect sister,” “children”) for a standing translator’s note on individual-vs-corporate ambiguity rather than forcing a premature resolution in the base text.
