Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Gospel of John → Burmese
Methodology and Citation Convention
This analysis catalogs every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, and every OT→NT typological pattern across all 21 chapters of John, and cross-references these against the Romans curriculum already localized into Burmese. Where the same Old Testament verse (or the same forensic/theological phrase) is quoted or echoed in both John and Romans, a rendering-consistency rule is issued so that Phase 2 translation produces identical Burmese wording for shared quotations across curricula, per the baseline’s cross-document consistency principle (12_ai_translation_requirements.md, “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents”).
Citation format: All citations are normalized to Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., Genesis 15:6, Isaiah 53:1, Romans 10:16) for machine parseability. Myanmar Bible Society book-name conventions (per the baseline’s Cross-Reference Preservation Rules) apply at Phase 2 render time; this document uses English citation form as the canonical working key.
Columns used throughout:
- Passage — the John reference
- Theme/Doctrine — the curriculum doctrine(s) engaged (from the nine listed in the curriculum parameters, or a closely related sub-theme)
- OT Source — the Old Testament text quoted or alluded to
- Related Character(s) — biblical figures anchoring the connection
- Connection Type — Direct Quotation / Allusion / Typology / Thematic Parallel
- Translation Sensitivity — the specific rendering risk, with reference to the risk tier established in

PART A — Chapter-by-Chapter OT Quotation and Allusion Matrix
Chapter 1 — Prologue; John the Baptist; First Disciples
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 1:1 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Genesis 1:1 | — (Word/Logos, God) | Allusion (opening formula “in the beginning”) | High. နှုတ်ကပတ်တော် must open the Gospel with the same absolute, timeless force as ကမ္ဘာဦးကျမ်း ၁:၁’s “အစအဦး” — signaling the Word’s own pre-creation existence, not a created being who appears at a point within creation’s timeline. |
| John 1:1–3 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Genesis 1:1–3; Proverbs 8:22–31 (Wisdom active in creation, background) | — | Allusion / conceptual background | Critical. Must not be taught as Wisdom-personification alone (a poetic figure) but as a distinct divine Person who is God and creates all things (1:3). |
| John 1:14 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; Incarnation (Romans-baseline doctrine) | Exodus 33:7–11; 40:34–35 (tabernacle, God’s glory dwelling among his people) | Moses | Allusion (σκηνόω, “tabernacled/dwelt”) | High. ကျန်းခြင်း/နေထိုင်ခြင်း chosen for σκηνόω should carry the sense of God’s own glory-presence pitching itself among his people, echoing the tabernacle, not a temporary or illusory visitation (cf. baseline’s rejection of နတ်ဆင်းသက်ခြင်း for incarnation). |
| John 1:14, 16–17 | God’s Love for the World; Fulfillment of the Law | Exodus 34:6 (ḥesed we’emet, “steadfast love and faithfulness/truth”) | Moses | Allusion | Critical. ကျေးဇူးတော်နှင့် သမ္မာတရား together render the OT covenant-pair; John 1:17 explicitly contrasts law-through-Moses with grace-and-truth-through-Christ — see Romans parallel rule R-1 below. |
| John 1:21 | Fulfillment of Prophecy; Messianic Promise | Deuteronomy 18:15, 18 (the Prophet); Malachi 4:5 (Elijah) | Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist | Allusion (question form) | Medium. Establish OT prophetic-expectation categories explicitly for readers with low OT narrative literacy per the AI instruction set’s audience note. |
| John 1:23 | Fulfillment of Prophecy | Isaiah 40:3 | John the Baptist | Direct Quotation | Low–Medium. Standard prophetic-fulfillment formula; consistent with baseline “prophecy” term. |
| John 1:29, 36 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Exodus 12:1–13 (Passover lamb); Isaiah 53:7 (lamb led to slaughter); Genesis 22:1–14 (Abraham’s beloved son/provided lamb, typological background) | John the Baptist, Abraham, Isaac | Typology | Critical. See Glossary #8 (Lamb of God). Requires explicit teaching of the Passover/sacrificial-substitution background, since no indigenous Burmese category supplies it. |
| John 1:41, 45 | Messianic Promise; Fulfillment of Prophecy | General Messianic expectation (2 Samuel 7:12–16; Isaiah 9:6–7; Micah 5:2) | Andrew, Philip | Allusion + explicit gloss (“Messiah…which means Christ”) | Critical. John himself equates Μεσσίας/Χριστός for a bilingual audience — preserve [BASELINE REUSE] မေရှိယ and ခရစ်တော် exactly, never မိတ္တေယျ. |
| John 1:51 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; Son of Man | Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder) | Jacob | Typology/Allusion | High. The Son of Man is presented as the true connecting point between heaven and earth that Jacob’s vision foreshadowed; must not collapse Son of Man into “merely human” (see Glossary #13). |
Chapter 2 — Wedding at Cana; Temple Cleansing
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 2:13 | (Setting) Christ’s Substitutionary Death, foreshadowed | Exodus 12 (Passover) | — | Allusion (feast setting) | Low. First of five Passover references marking the narrative’s movement toward the cross (2:13; 6:4; 11:55; 12:1; 13:1; 18:28, 39; 19:14). |
| John 2:17 | Christ’s zeal for God’s house; foreshadows substitutionary suffering | Psalm 69:9a (“Zeal for your house will consume me”) | — | Direct Quotation | Critical — Romans parallel. Psalm 69 is quoted twice more, from different clauses of the same psalm, at John 15:25/19:28-area context and, in the Romans curriculum, at Romans 15:3 (Psalm 69:9b, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me”). See Romans parallel rule R-2 below: both curricula must render Psalm 69 consistently as a single recognizable psalm of righteous suffering fulfilled in Christ. |
| John 2:19–21 | Deity of Christ; Resurrection of Christ | 2 Samuel 7:13; 1 Kings 8:10–13 (temple as locus of God’s dwelling) | — | Typology (ναός shifts to mean Christ’s own body) | Critical. See Glossary #46 (Temple). The shift from physical sanctuary to Christ’s body directly anticipates the Resurrection doctrine; [BASELINE REUSE] ထမြောက်ခြင်း applies to 2:22’s fulfillment note, never ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း. |
Chapter 3 — The New Birth (Core Passage, vv.1–21) and John the Baptist’s Testimony (vv.22–36)
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 3:3, 5–8 | The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | Ezekiel 36:25–27 (cleansing water + new spirit/heart); Ezekiel 37:1–14 (Spirit-given life to dry bones, thematic) | Ezekiel (background) | Allusion | Critical. Nicodemus, “the teacher of Israel” (3:10), should have recognized this from Ezekiel’s new-covenant promise; a translator note supplying this OT background helps the Burmese reader see the new birth as covenant fulfillment, not novel doctrine, and helps block the ပြန်လည်မွေးဖွားခြင်း (rebirth) misreading by anchoring it in a specific one-time promised transformation. |
| John 3:14 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (typology) | Numbers 21:4–9 (bronze serpent lifted on a pole) | Moses | Typology (explicit, named in text) | Critical. See Glossary #38 (Lifted Up). The serpent-image here is a healing sign, deliberately distinct from the tempter-serpent of Genesis 3 (echoed later at John 8:44’s “father of lies” figure) — the two serpent references must not be conflated in teaching notes. |
| John 3:16 | God’s Love for the World; Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Genesis 22:2, 12, 16 (“your son, your only son… whom you love”; LXX τὸν υἱόν σου τὸν ἀγαπητόν) | Abraham, Isaac | Typology (background to μονογενής, “only/unique Son”) | Critical. The Father’s giving of his μονογενής Son echoes and surpasses Abraham’s willingness to give his only son — Abraham’s test foreshadows, but does not equal, God’s own costly gift; the Burmese teaching note should draw this parallel explicitly while avoiding any suggestion that Isaac was actually sacrificed (he was not) whereas Christ actually was. |
| John 3:19–21 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | (Thematic, not directly quoted) Isaiah 5:20 (“who call evil good and good evil” — light/darkness moral inversion); Genesis 1:3–4 (light/darkness ordering, background) | — | Thematic Parallel | High. See Glossary #3–4 (Light/Darkness). |
| John 3:34 | Holy Spirit as Counselor (anticipatory) | Isaiah 11:2; 61:1 (Spirit resting on the Anointed One without limit) | — | Allusion | Medium. |
Chapter 4 — The Samaritan Woman; the Royal Official’s Son
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 4:5–6 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles (parallel doctrine) | Genesis 33:18–19; 48:22 (Jacob’s plot of land/well at Shechem) | Jacob | Allusion | Medium. Establishes the patriarchal-land background for the Samaritan encounter. |
| John 4:12 | (background) | Genesis 33:19 (Jacob our father) | Jacob | Allusion (Samaritan woman’s claim) | Low. |
| John 4:19–24 | God’s Love for the World; universal worship | Deuteronomy 12:5–14 (one chosen place of worship, background now superseded) | — | Thematic reversal | High. See Glossary #41 (Worship). The move from a fixed sanctuary (Jerusalem/Gerizim) to Spirit-and-truth worship must not be read as removing the exclusivity of the object of worship — only the exclusivity of the location. |
| John 4:10–14 | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ; Holy Spirit as Counselor | Isaiah 55:1 (thematic invitation, “come to the waters”); Exodus 17:6 (water from the rock, background typology) | Moses | Allusion / distant typology | High. See Glossary #20 (Living Water); explicitly linked to the Spirit at John 7:37–39. |
| John 4:22 | Fulfillment of Prophecy; Unity of Jews and Gentiles | (General) — salvation-historical priority of Israel | — | Thematic | Medium. Compare Romans 9:4–5 (baseline “israel” doctrine “unity_of_jews_and_gentiles”) — same salvation-historical claim that gospel privilege runs through Israel first; see Romans parallel rule R-6. |
Chapter 5 — Healing at Bethesda; Christ’s Equality with the Father
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 5:9–18 | Deity of Christ; Unity of the Father and the Son | Genesis 2:2–3; Exodus 20:8–11 (Sabbath institution) | God (Creator), Moses | Allusion/background | High. See Glossary #42 (Sabbath). ဥပုသ်နေ့’s Uposatha-observance collision risk is at its peak in this chapter; a standing translator note distinguishing covenantal creation-rest from merit-observance fasting days is mandatory here. |
| John 5:17 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Genesis 2:2–3 (God’s rest/work pattern) | God | Allusion (contrastive: “My Father is working…”) | Critical. Jesus’s claim to continue the Father’s own creative/sustaining work is a direct divine-prerogative claim. |
| John 5:28–29 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; Resurrection | Daniel 12:2 (some to everlasting life, some to shame/contempt) | Daniel (background) | Allusion | Critical. See Glossary #16, #26. A single future bodily resurrection with two destinies — never two separate rebirths into better/worse states. |
| John 5:39, 45–46 | Inspiration of Scripture; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Deuteronomy 18:15, 18; the Pentateuch generally (“Moses…wrote of me”) | Moses | Allusion | High. Grounds the claim that the entire OT witness (not isolated proof-texts) points to Christ. |
Chapter 6 — Feeding the 5,000; Bread of Life Discourse
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 6:14 | Messianic Promise; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Deuteronomy 18:15, 18 (the Prophet) | Moses | Allusion | Medium. |
| John 6:31 | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ (Bread of Life, “I Am” #1) | Exodus 16:4, 15; Psalm 78:24 (“he gave them bread from heaven to eat”) | Moses, the Israelites | Direct Quotation | Critical. See Glossary #19. The manna (temporary, daily, insufficient against death) is explicitly surpassed by Christ, the true Bread that grants permanent life (6:49–51); this contrast must be preserved sharply in Burmese, since dāna-style food-merit offerings could otherwise be imported onto this image. |
| John 6:45 | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ; effectual calling (parallel doctrine) | Isaiah 54:13 (“they shall all be taught by God”) | — | Direct Quotation | High. Ties directly to the “drawing” (ἑλκύω, 6:44) doctrine — divine initiative in bringing a person to faith. |
| John 6:53–58 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Exodus 12 (Passover); Leviticus 17:10–14 (prohibition against consuming blood, background contrast intensifying the offense of Jesus’s words) | Moses | Typology / deliberate provocation | Critical. See Glossary in 07_semantic_analysis.md ch.6 entry. Must be read participatorally (union with Christ’s atoning death), not literally. |
Chapter 7 — Feast of Tabernacles; Rivers of Living Water
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 7:2, 14, 37 | (Setting) Holy Spirit as Counselor | Leviticus 23:33–43 (Feast of Tabernacles/Booths, with its water-drawing ritual, per later Jewish practice) | — | Allusion (feast setting) | Medium. |
| John 7:22–23 | (Sabbath controversy, extension of ch.5) | Genesis 17:10–14; Leviticus 12:3 (circumcision on the eighth day, even if it falls on Sabbath) | Abraham, Moses | Allusion (rabbinic-style argument) | High. Same Sabbath collision risk as Glossary #42 applies. |
| John 7:37–38 | Holy Spirit as Counselor; Eternal Life | Isaiah 55:1 (“come, everyone who thirsts”); Zechariah 14:8 (living waters flowing out); possibly Exodus 17:6 | Moses (background) | Allusion, likely conflated OT echo | Critical. See Glossary #20. Explicitly glossed by the narrator (7:39) as referring to the Holy Spirit — the single most important interpretive key linking “living water” language across the whole Gospel to the Spirit’s Person, not a generic symbol. |
| John 7:42 | Davidic Covenant; Messianic Promise | Micah 5:2; 2 Samuel 7:12 (seed of David, born in Bethlehem) | David | Allusion — shares exact phrase with Romans | Critical — Romans parallel. See Romans parallel rule R-3 below: John 7:42’s “ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Δαυίδ” (of the seed of David) is the identical phrase used of Christ at Romans 1:3’s “ἐκ σπέρματος Δαυίδ.” The baseline term ဒါဝိဒ်၏အနွယ်ဝင် MUST be reused exactly here. |
Chapter 8 — Light of the World; Truth and Freedom; Before Abraham
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 8:12 | The Seven “I Am” Statements; Deity of Christ | Isaiah 9:2; 42:6; 49:6 (light to the nations) | — | Allusion | Critical. See Glossary #3, #18. |
| John 8:17 | (Legal argument for testimony) | Deuteronomy 19:15 (two-or-three-witness rule) | Moses | Direct Quotation/Citation | Medium. Jesus argues from Mosaic legal procedure that his testimony, joined with the Father’s, satisfies the Law’s own evidentiary standard. |
| John 8:31–36 | Eternal Life; freedom from sin | Leviticus 25 (Jubilee/manumission, thematic background to slave/free status) | — | Thematic Parallel | High. See Glossary #52 (Freedom). |
| John 8:35 | (Slave vs. son status) | Genesis 21:1–14 (Ishmael the slave-woman’s son vs. Isaac the free woman’s son) | Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac | Allusion | High. Compare Romans 9:7–9, which explicitly names this same Genesis narrative (Isaac, not Ishmael, as the child of promise) — see Romans parallel rule R-4. |
| John 8:39, 56–58 | Abraham’s true children; Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Genesis 12:1–3; 15:1–6; 17:1–8; 22:1–18 (the Abraham narrative cycle) | Abraham | Allusion (extended) | Critical. Compare Romans 4:1–25 (Abraham as the paradigm of justification by faith, quoting Genesis 15:6 directly). See Romans parallel rule R-5 below — both curricula use Abraham as the test case distinguishing true spiritual descent/faith from mere biological or ethnic lineage; Burmese အာဗြဟံ transliteration must remain fixed across both curricula. |
| John 8:44 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Genesis 3:1–15 (the serpent, the first lie, the enmity introduced at the Fall) | The serpent/devil | Allusion | High. See Glossary #29. Must be distinguished from the healing bronze-serpent typology of 3:14 — same animal-image, opposite theological valence; a standing note preventing conflation is required. |
| John 8:58 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; The Seven “I Am” Statements | Exodus 3:14 (“I AM WHO I AM”) | Moses, God | Allusion (theophanic formula) | Critical. See Glossary #18. The single highest-stakes rendering decision in the Gospel; requires the standing Exodus 3:14 translator note at every absolute ἐγώ εἰμι occurrence. |
Chapter 9 — The Man Born Blind
No direct Old Testament quotation occurs in this chapter. It is reviewed here explicitly for full-book coverage: its theological weight lies in typological and thematic background rather than citation.
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 9:1–7 | Deity of Christ (sign); Judgment | Isaiah 29:18; 35:5; 42:6–7 (opening blind eyes as a marker of messianic/eschatological restoration) | — | Thematic/typological background | High. The healing functions as a messianic-credential sign in the pattern of Isaiah’s restoration prophecies. |
| John 9:2–3 | Universal Human Accountability (Romans-baseline doctrine, contrastive); Judgment | Job (general background); Deuteronomy 28 (blessing/curse retribution pattern, contrastively rejected) | Job (background) | Thematic Parallel (contrastive) | High. Jesus’s explicit rejection of a simple sin-causes-affliction inference directly counters the folk-Buddhist intuition that visible suffering transparently indicates past-life demerit; flagged for mandatory teaching note. |
| John 9:39–41 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Isaiah 6:9–10 (thematic anticipation of the direct quotation at John 12:40) | Isaiah (background) | Thematic anticipation | Medium. |
Chapter 10 — The Good Shepherd; “I and the Father Are One”
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 10:1–18 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death; The Seven “I Am” Statements | Ezekiel 34:1–31 (God against the failed shepherds of Israel, promising to shepherd his flock himself); Psalm 23:1; Numbers 27:17; 1 Kings 22:17 (sheep without a shepherd) | Ezekiel (background), David (Psalm 23) | Typology | Critical. See Glossary #22–24. Christ fulfills and personally embodies the shepherd role Ezekiel promised God himself would take up — a direct claim to divine identity, not merely a pastoral metaphor. |
| John 10:16 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles (parallel doctrine) | Ezekiel 34:23; 37:24 (one shepherd over a reunited flock) | Ezekiel (background) | Allusion | Medium. Compare Romans 11:17–24 (grafted-in branches, unified people of God) — see Romans parallel rule R-6. |
| John 10:30 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Deuteronomy 6:4 (“the LORD our God, the LORD is one,” background monotheistic frame) | Moses | Thematic contrast/extension | Critical. Jesus’s claim of unity-with-the-Father must be understood against, not as a departure from, Israel’s foundational monotheism (the Shema) — this is an intra-Trinitarian claim, not a rival second god. |
| John 10:34 | Deity of Christ (a fortiori argument) | Psalm 82:6 (“I said, you are gods”) | — | Direct Quotation | Critical. Requires theologian review given citation complexity — Jesus’s argument from a lesser case (human judges called “gods” in a derivative, functional sense) to the greater case (his own unique divine Sonship) must not be flattened into implying ordinary human beings are literally divine; [BASELINE REUSE] ဘုရားသခင် is reserved elsewhere for the one true God only, so this quoted OT usage requires a clarifying footnote. |
Chapter 11 — The Raising of Lazarus
No direct Old Testament quotation occurs in this chapter; reviewed here for full coverage.
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 11:25 | Eternal Life; Resurrection of Christ | Daniel 12:2; Isaiah 25:8; 26:19 (OT resurrection-hope texts) | Daniel, Isaiah (background) | Thematic/typological fulfillment | Critical. Christ does not merely predict resurrection as these OT texts anticipated it, but personally embodies and enacts it (“I am the resurrection,” present tense). |
| John 11:43–44 | Resurrection of Christ (by contrast) | 1 Kings 17:17–24; 2 Kings 4:32–37 (Elijah/Elisha raising the dead, typological precedent for temporary revival) | Elijah, Elisha (background) | Typology (contrastive) | High. See Glossary #27. Lazarus’s revival belongs to the same OT-precedented category as Elijah’s/Elisha’s temporary raisings — mortal life restored, followed by later death — and must be kept terminologically distinct from Christ’s own permanent, glorified resurrection. |
Chapter 12 — Triumphal Entry; the Hour Has Come; the Grain of Wheat
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 12:13 | Messianic Promise; Lordship of Christ | Psalm 118:25–26 (“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”) | — | Direct Quotation | High. Royal-messianic acclamation; must retain the psalm’s own covenantal “in the name of the LORD” force. |
| John 12:15 | Messianic Promise; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Zechariah 9:9 (Zion’s king comes humbly, on a donkey) | — | Direct Quotation | Critical. A specific, exclusively-fulfilled royal-messianic prophecy — must not be generalized into a vague “humility” teaching disconnected from its Davidic-kingship claim. |
| John 12:27 | Humanity of Christ; Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Psalm 6:3; 42:6, 11 (“my soul is troubled/downcast,” lament-psalm language) | David (background) | Allusion | Medium. |
| John 12:32–34 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (typology, third “lifted up” saying) | Numbers 21:8–9 (reprised from 3:14) | Moses | Typology (reprise) | High. See Glossary #38. |
| John 12:38 | Fulfillment of Prophecy; Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Isaiah 53:1 (“Lord, who has believed our report…?”) | Isaiah | Direct Quotation — EXACT ROMANS OVERLAP | Critical — Romans parallel. See Romans parallel rule R-7 below: this is the identical verse quoted at Romans 10:16. The Burmese rendering of Isaiah 53:1 MUST be word-for-word identical in both the John and Romans curricula. |
| John 12:39–40 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Isaiah 6:9–10 (eyes blinded, hearts hardened) | Isaiah | Direct Quotation | High. Compare Romans 11:8 (a related hardening-of-Israel citation drawing on Deuteronomy 29:4 and Isaiah 29:10). See Romans parallel rule R-8 — both texts describe divine judicial hardening of unbelief; the Burmese rendering must convey personal, judicial divine action, never impersonal karmic determinism (cf. baseline’s “election”/“providence” cautions against ကံဇာတာ/ကံ). |
| John 12:41 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Isaiah 6:1–5 (Isaiah’s vision of the LORD’s glory in the temple) | Isaiah | Allusion (narrator’s comment: “Isaiah said these things because he saw his [Christ’s] glory”) | Critical. John identifies the glory Isaiah saw in his temple vision as Christ’s own pre-incarnate glory — a direct, strong assertion of Christ’s full deity read back into an OT theophany. |
Chapter 13 — Foot Washing; the New Commandment; Betrayal Predicted
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 13:18 | Fulfillment of Prophecy; Christ’s Substitutionary Death (betrayal as part of the foreordained pattern) | Psalm 41:9 (“he who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me”) | David (background) | Direct Quotation | High. Grounds Judas’s betrayal within scriptural foreknowledge, not an accident disrupting God’s plan. |
| John 13:34 | (Ethical outworking) Unity/Love | Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor as yourself,” background contrast) | Moses | Thematic contrast (“a new commandment”) | Medium. See Glossary #30. Distinguished from the Levitical command by its explicit Christological model (“as I have loved you”). |
Chapter 14 — The Way, the Truth, and the Life; the Promised Counselor
No direct Old Testament quotation occurs in this chapter; reviewed here for full coverage. Its OT roots are thematic/typological rather than citational.
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 14:6 | The Seven “I Am” Statements | Exodus 33:13 (Moses’s request to know God’s “ways,” background); Psalm 25:4–5 (the way of truth) | Moses, David (background) | Thematic background | Critical. See Glossary #6, 8:6 in 07_semantic_analysis.md. |
| John 14:16, 26 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | Jeremiah 31:31–34 (new covenant, God’s law/teaching internalized); Ezekiel 36:26–27 (new heart, God’s Spirit put within) | Jeremiah, Ezekiel (background) | Thematic Parallel | Critical. The Counselor’s teaching/indwelling ministry is the New Testament fulfillment of the New Covenant promise; explicit OT grounding strengthens the case that the Spirit’s presence is a promised covenant gift, not a generic comforting presence. |
Chapter 15 — The True Vine; Abiding; the World’s Hatred
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 15:1, 5 | The Seven “I Am” Statements | Psalm 80:8–16; Isaiah 5:1–7; Ezekiel 15:1–8; 17:1–10; 19:10–14 (Israel repeatedly figured as God’s vine/vineyard, often a failed or judged vine) | Israel (corporate) | Typology (fulfillment/contrast) | Critical. Christ presents himself as the vine Israel failed to be — the true, fruitful vine that OT Israel’s vine-oracles anticipated but, in their disobedience, did not fulfill. Requires an explicit OT-background note. |
| John 15:25 | Fulfillment of Prophecy; Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Psalm 35:19; 69:4 (“they hated me without a cause”) | David (background) | Direct Quotation | High. Same Psalm 69 family as John 2:17 — see Romans parallel rule R-2. |
Chapter 16 — The Spirit’s Ministry; Sorrow Turned to Joy
No direct Old Testament quotation occurs in this chapter; reviewed here for full coverage.
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 16:8 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | Isaiah 11:2–5; Ezekiel 36:26–27 (background, reprised from ch.14) | — | Thematic | High. |
| John 16:13 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | Joel 2:28–29 (outpouring of the Spirit, thematic anticipation); Jeremiah 31:31–34 | Joel, Jeremiah (background) | Thematic Parallel | Medium. |
| John 16:20–22 | (Eschatological reversal) | Isaiah 26:17; 66:7–9 (labor-pain imagery for eschatological distress giving way to joy) | — | Allusion | Low–Medium. |
| John 16:33 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection (victory) | Psalm 2 (thematic, the anointed one’s ultimate triumph over hostile powers) | David (background) | Thematic | Medium. |
Chapter 17 — The High Priestly Prayer
No direct Old Testament quotation occurs in this chapter; its typological background is priestly/covenantal rather than citational.
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 17:1, 5, 24 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | Exodus 33:18–23 (Moses’s request to see God’s glory); Isaiah 6:1–3 (temple glory-vision, reprised from 12:41) | Moses, Isaiah (background) | Allusion | Critical. The “glory I had with you before the world existed” (17:5) is among the Gospel’s strongest pre-existence claims. |
| John 17:6, 11–12 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Exodus 3:14–15; 33:19 (God’s Name revealed) | Moses (background) | Allusion (“I have made known your name”) | High. |
| John 17:11, 20–23 | Unity of the Father and the Son (extended to believers) | Numbers 6:24–26 (priestly blessing, thematic background to intercessory prayer form); Deuteronomy 6:4 (the Shema’s “one,” reprised from 10:30) | Aaron (background), Moses | Typology (priestly intercession) / Thematic | Critical. John 17 functions structurally as a high-priestly intercessory prayer; Christ prays for his people as Israel’s high priest interceded for the nation, but here it is the eternal Son himself interceding — a category the Burmese teaching notes should distinguish from any human intermediary or nat-invoked intercession (cf. baseline “intercession” caution). |
| John 17:17 | Sanctification (Romans-baseline doctrine) | Exodus 19:5–6 (Israel set apart as a holy nation, background) | — | Allusion | High. Compare baseline’s “sanctification” doctrine entry directly. |
Chapter 18 — Arrest, Trial before Pilate
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 18:5–6, 8 | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; The Seven “I Am” Statements | Exodus 3:14 (reprised) | Moses, God | Allusion (theophanic echo; the soldiers’ recoil at the words) | Critical. See Glossary #18; requires the standing Exodus 3:14 translator note linking this occurrence to 8:58. |
| John 18:9 | (Narrator’s fulfillment-comment) | (Referring back to John 6:39, 17:12 — intratextual, not directly OT) | — | Internal cross-reference | Low. |
| John 18:28, 39 | (Setting) Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Exodus 12 (Passover, reprised) | — | Allusion (feast setting) | Medium. |
| John 18:36–37 | Lordship of Christ; Kingdom Mission (Romans-baseline doctrine, parallel) | Daniel 7:13–14 (an everlasting kingdom given to “one like a son of man”) | Daniel (background) | Thematic/typological background | High. Jesus clarifies before Pilate that Daniel’s promised kingdom is real but “not of this world” in the political sense Pilate assumes. |
Chapter 19 — Crucifixion
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 19:24 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Psalm 22:18 (“they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots”) | David (background) | Direct Quotation | Critical. Psalm 22 as a whole (the lament-to-vindication psalm) supplies extensive passion-narrative background across the Gospels; here specifically fulfilled in exact detail. |
| John 19:28 | Humanity of Christ; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Psalm 69:21 (“for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink”) | David (background) | Allusion | High. Same Psalm 69 family as John 2:17/15:25 — see Romans parallel rule R-2. |
| John 19:36 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (Passover typology fulfilled) | Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12 (no bone of the Passover lamb shall be broken); cf. Psalm 34:20 | Moses (background), David (background) | Direct Quotation/Typology | Critical. Directly completes the Lamb of God typology introduced at 1:29 — Christ’s body is treated in exact accordance with the Passover lamb’s ritual requirements. |
| John 19:37 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Zechariah 12:10 (“they will look on him whom they have pierced”) | — | Direct Quotation | Critical. A specific, historically exact messianic prophecy of the manner of Christ’s death, fulfilled to the letter. |
| John 19:34–35 | Humanity of Christ; Christ’s Substitutionary Death | Leviticus 17:11 (life is in the blood, sacrificial-theological background) | — | Thematic background | Medium. See Glossary #44. |
Chapter 20 — Resurrection Appearances
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 20:9 | Fulfillment of Prophecy; Resurrection of Christ | (Narrator’s comment: “they did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead”) — general OT resurrection-hope texts (Psalm 16:10; Isaiah 53:10–12; Hosea 6:2) | — | Allusion (unspecified) | Critical. The Gospel asserts the resurrection was already scripturally anticipated even though the disciples had not yet connected the specific texts — a teaching note listing candidate OT texts (Psalm 16:10, quoted directly at Acts 2:25–28 outside this curriculum, is the strongest candidate) is recommended. |
| John 20:17 | Unity of the Father and the Son; Adoption (Romans-baseline doctrine, parallel) | (Thematic) — “my Father and your Father, my God and your God,” distinguishing yet uniting the Son’s unique sonship with believers’ derived adoptive sonship | — | Thematic Parallel | High. Compare [BASELINE REUSE] သားအဖြစ်လက်ခံခြင်း (adoption) — Christ’s sonship is by nature, unique and eternal (Glossary #1, #7); believers’ sonship is granted status. The distinction must not blur. |
| John 20:22 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor; New Birth | Genesis 2:7 (“the LORD God…breathed into his nostrils the breath of life”) | Adam (background) | Typology/Allusion (ἐνεφύσησεν, “breathed on them”) | Critical. John deliberately echoes the creation-breath of Genesis 2:7: as God breathed physical life into the first man, the risen Christ breathes the Spirit’s life into the new-covenant community — a new-creation motif directly reinforcing the New Birth doctrine. |
| John 20:28 | Deity of Christ; Lordship of Christ | (Thematic) Exodus 3:14/34:6 background to “God”; Psalm 35:23 (“my God and my Lord,” near-verbal parallel) | — | Allusion | Critical. See Glossary #48. The Gospel’s climactic deity confession. |
| John 20:31 | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ | (Thematic capstone, not a direct OT quotation) | — | Thematic capstone | Critical. John’s own stated purpose statement; see Romans parallel rule R-9 below (compare Romans 1:16–17’s thesis-statement function). |
Chapter 21 — Epilogue: Restoration of Peter
No direct Old Testament quotation occurs in this chapter; reviewed here for full coverage.
| Passage | Theme/Doctrine | OT Source | Related Character(s) | Connection Type | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 21:15–17 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (pastoral extension) | Ezekiel 34:23; 37:24 (“I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David”) | David (typological), Ezekiel (background) | Typology (extended to Peter’s commissioning) | Medium. Peter is commissioned within the shepherd-typology Christ himself fulfilled in ch.10 — a delegated, not competing, shepherd role. |
| John 21:18–19 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (pattern extended to disciples) | (Thematic) — martyrdom as glorifying God, paralleling Christ’s own death | — | Thematic Parallel | Medium. |
PART B — Messianic References Summary

| 8 | Creation-Breath (Genesis 2:7) | Christ breathing the Spirit into the disciples | John 20:22 | The New Birth; Holy Spirit as Counselor | Critical |
| 9 | Elijah/Elisha’s Raisings (1 Kings 17; 2 Kings 4) | Lazarus’s temporary revival, contrastively distinguishing Christ’s own permanent resurrection | John 11:43–44 | Resurrection of Christ (by contrast) | High |
| 10 | High Priestly Intercession (Numbers 6; Leviticus 16, thematic) | Christ’s own eternal intercessory prayer for his people | John 17 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Critical |
PART D — Parallels to the Romans Curriculum: Rendering-Consistency Rules
The following rules govern segments where John and the already-localized Romans curriculum quote, allude to, or theologically parallel the same Old Testament source or forensic phrase. Phase 2 translators and reviewers MUST enforce identical Burmese wording wherever the same verse is cited, per the baseline’s cross-document consistency principle.
| Rule ID | Shared Source / Phrase | John Occurrence(s) | Romans Occurrence(s) | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R-1 | Exodus 34:6 (grace and truth/law contrast) | John 1:14, 16–17 | Romans 3:21–24; 6:14–15; 11:5–6 | ကျေးဇူးတော် (grace, [BASELINE REUSE]) and the new သမ္မာတရား (truth) rendering must jointly carry the same grace-vs-merit force established as Romans’s single highest-stakes doctrine; John 1:17 introduces this exact contrast independently and must be taught with equal weight. |
| R-2 | Psalm 69 (righteous sufferer’s reproach/zeal/thirst) | John 2:17 (69:9a); John 15:25 (69:4, jointly with Psalm 35:19); John 19:28 (69:21, allusion) | Romans 15:3 (69:9b) | Render Psalm 69 consistently across both curricula as a single recognizable psalm of the righteous sufferer, fulfilled in Christ’s zeal, undeserved hatred, and suffering. Where 69:9’s two clauses are quoted in each curriculum, use one shared Burmese translation of the full verse so cross-referencing readers recognize the same psalm. |
| R-3 | ”Seed of David” (σπέρμα Δαυίδ) | John 7:42 | Romans 1:3 | Use the [BASELINE REUSE] term ဒါဝိဒ်၏အနွယ်ဝင် (Dawid i anwe-win) exactly in both curricula — identical Greek phrase, identical Burmese rendering, no variation permitted. |
| R-4 | Genesis 21 (Isaac/Ishmael, slave-son vs. free-son) | John 8:35 (allusion) | Romans 9:7–9 (explicit citation) | Both use the same Genesis narrative to distinguish status received by promise/freedom from status merely inherited by flesh/bondage. Character names (Abraham အာဗြဟံ, Isaac အိဇာက်, Ishmael ဣရှမေလ) must use identical transliterations across curricula. |
| R-5 | Abraham as paradigm of faith vs. mere lineage (Genesis 12–22; Genesis 15:6 in Romans) | John 8:39, 56–58 | Romans 4:1–25 (quoting Genesis 15:6 directly) | Though John does not quote Genesis 15:6 verbatim, both curricula use Abraham identically as the test case distinguishing true spiritual descent/faith-relationship from biological or ethnic descent. Teaching notes for John 8 should cross-reference Romans 4 explicitly for continuity across the learner’s curriculum sequence. |
| R-6 | Unity of Jews/Gentiles under one shepherd/covenant people | John 10:16; 4:22 | Romans 9:4–5; 11:17–24 (olive tree) | Shepherd/flock (John) and tree/branches (Romans) are distinct images but the identical doctrine (baseline: “unity_of_jews_and_gentiles,” High risk) — maintain identical doctrinal framing and avoid importing Burma’s own majority/minority ethnic-religious tension into either image uncritically. |
| R-7 | Isaiah 53:1 (“Lord, who has believed our report?”) | John 12:38 | Romans 10:16 | Exact same OT verse quoted in both curricula. The Burmese rendering of Isaiah 53:1 must be word-for-word identical in both documents. This is a mandatory Phase 2 validation check. |
| R-8 | Isaiah 6:9–10 / hardening motif | John 12:39–40 | Romans 11:8 (via Deuteronomy 29:4/Isaiah 29:10, a related hardening citation) | Not verbatim-identical citations, but the same theological category (divine judicial hardening of persistent unbelief) — both renderings must convey personal, judicial divine action, never impersonal karmic determinism, consistent with the baseline’s “election”/“providence” cautions against ကံ/ကံဇာတာ. |
| R-9 | Thesis/purpose-statement function | John 20:31 | Romans 1:16–17 | Both verses function as their respective book’s programmatic thesis statement (per the baseline’s explicit “Same rendering of Romans 1:16–17 across all documents” rule). John 20:31’s rendering must be fixed with the same rigor and never re-translated ad hoc in any derivative lesson. |
| R-10 | πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων (“everyone who believes”) universal-faith formula | John 3:15–16, 18, 36; 6:35, 40; 11:25–26; 20:31 | Romans 1:16; 3:22; 4:11; 10:4, 11 (quoting Isaiah 28:16); 10:13 (quoting Joel 2:32) | Though the specific OT anchors differ (John’s formula is Jesus’s own repeated teaching; Romans’s is partly OT-quotation-grounded), the identical universal-inclusion force (Universal Scope of the Gospel, baseline High risk) must be preserved without qualification in both curricula. Render consistently as ယုံကြည်သူတိုင်း (“everyone who believes”) wherever this formula recurs. |
| R-11 | ”Kingdom of God” entrance conditions | John 3:3, 5 | Romans (baseline “kingdom_of_god”/“kingdom_mission” doctrine, e.g., Romans 14:17) | [BASELINE REUSE] ဘုရားသခင်၏နိုင်ငံတော် must be used identically; John adds the specific entrance condition (new birth) not stated in Romans’s kingdom references — teaching notes should note this as complementary, not contradictory, revelation. |
| R-12 | Grace/Law dichotomy general theme | John 1:17 (law through Moses vs. grace and truth through Christ) | Romans 6:14; 7:1–6; Galatians-adjacent Romans passages | Reuse [BASELINE REUSE] ပညတ်တရား (law) exactly; ensure John 1:17 is flagged with the same escalation priority as Romans’s grace-contrast passages per the AI instruction set’s escalation rules (“Any segment where grace is being contrasted with works/merit”). |
PART E — Cross-Curriculum Character Table
| Character | John References | Romans References | Consistency Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abraham | John 8:33, 37, 39–40, 52, 56–58 | Romans 4:1–25; 9:7; 11:1 | Transliteration အာဗြဟံ fixed; used as faith-paradigm in both. |
| David | John 7:42 | Romans 1:3; 4:6–8; 11:9 (Psalm 69 cited via David); 15:9, 12 | [BASELINE REUSE] ဒါဝိဒ် fixed. |
| Isaiah | John 1:23; 12:38–41 | Romans 9:27, 29; 10:16, 20; 15:12 | [NEW — JOHN] ဟေရှာယ, per the AI instruction set’s established transliteration table; heaviest OT-quotation overlap point between the two curricula (Isaiah 53:1 shared verbatim, R-7). |
| Moses | John 1:17, 21, 45; 3:14; 5:45–46; 6:32; 7:19, 22–23; 9:29 | Romans 5:14; 9:15; 10:5, 19 | [NEW — JOHN] မောရှေ, per AI instruction set. |
| Israel (people) | John 1:31, 49; 3:10; 12:13 | Romans 9–11 passim | [BASELINE REUSE] ဣသရေလ fixed. |
This document is the Step 3 (Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis) deliverable for Phase 1 of the John curriculum. See analysis/10_biblical_theme_map.md for the accompanying theme-structure analysis. All Critical/High rendering-consistency rules above must be validated at Phase 2 Step 17 (Doctrinal Fidelity Review) against both the John and Romans translated corpora.
