Core Glossary
08 Core Glossary — Gospel of John → Burmese
How to Use This Glossary
- Status = Baseline Reuse: the Burmese rendering is fixed in the Romans
translation_memory.jsonand MUST be used exactly as recorded there. No deviation is permitted. - Status = New (John): the term does not appear in the Romans baseline. A Burmese rendering is proposed here following the same methodology (established Myanmar Bible/Judson-tradition usage preferred over new coinage; Critical/High risk terms checked against Buddhist-vocabulary collision). These entries should be added to a future
translation_memory.jsonv2 andbible_term_registry.jsonv2 for the John curriculum, with Critical/High entries routed to human theologian review before Phase 2 begins, per the AI Translation Requirements’ new-term protocol. - Risk tiers follow the Romans baseline’s
doctrine_risk_registry.jsondefinitions exactly (Critical / High / Medium / Low), with the same review routing: Critical & High → human theologian; Medium → native speaker; Low → automated. - Passages cite the primary occurrences within John; this is not an exhaustive concordance.
A. Terms Reused Exactly from the Romans Baseline (Status: Baseline Reuse)
These terms recur throughout John and MUST use the burmese rendering already fixed in the Romans translation_memory.json. No new analysis is needed; they are listed here for cross-reference completeness and to confirm no contextual drift in John.
| English Term | Burmese Rendering | Risk | Key John Passages | Note on Use in John |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| God | ဘုရားသခင် | Critical | 1:1–2, 18; 3:16–17; 20:28 | Also the referent of the Word’s deity claim (1:1c) and Thomas’s confession (20:28). |
| Jesus | ယေရှု | Critical | throughout | Consistent form maintained. |
| Father | အဖ | Critical | 1:14, 18; 3:35; 5:17–23; 8:38–44; 10:30; 14–17 passim | Central to Unity of the Father and the Son and Sonship of Christ doctrines; John’s most theologically dense book for this term. |
| Holy Spirit | သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော် | Critical | 1:32–33; 3:5–8, 34; 7:39; 14:16–17, 26; 15:26; 16:7–15; 20:22 | Must always carry the -တော် honorific; never bare ဝိညာဉ်. Central to the Holy Spirit as Counselor doctrine. |
| Lord | သခင် | Critical | 6:68; 9:38; 11:27; 13:13–14; 20:28; 21:7,12 | Climaxes at 20:28’s “My Lord and my God.” |
| Son of God | ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော် | Critical | 1:34, 49; 3:16–18; 5:25; 10:36; 11:4, 27; 19:7; 20:31 | Anchors Sonship of Christ / Deity of Christ throughout; combine with မိုနိုဂျင်း entry (below) at 1:14, 18; 3:16, 18. |
| Grace | ကျေးဇူးတော် | Critical | 1:14, 16–17 | Paired with truth (χάρις καὶ ἀλήθεια); John 1:17 is a foundational grace-vs-law verse parallel to Romans’s core doctrine. |
| Faith / Believe | ယုံကြည်ခြင်း | Medium | throughout (98 occurrences of πιστεύω, more than any other NT book) | John’s central verb of response; object (Jesus/his name/his word) must remain explicit at every occurrence, per baseline note. |
| Salvation | ကယ်တင်ခြင်း | Critical | 3:17; 4:22; 5:34; 10:9; 12:47 | NEVER နိဗ္ဗာန်ရောက်ခြင်း. |
| Resurrection | ထမြောက်ခြင်း | Critical | 2:19–22; 5:28–29; 6:39–40, 44, 54; 11:24–25; 20:1–29 | NEVER ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း. See glossary section B for the important distinction from Lazarus’s temporary revival (New — John term proposed, “ပြန်လည်ရှင်စေခြင်း”). |
| Glory | ဘုန်းတော် | High | 1:14; 2:11; 11:4, 40; 12:41; 17:1–24 | NEVER ဘုန်းကံ (merit-power). |
| Holy | သန့်ရှင်းသော | High | 6:69; 17:11 (“Holy Father”) | |
| Sin | အပြစ် | High | 1:29; 8:34, 46; 9:2–3, 41; 15:22–24; 16:8–9; 19:11; 20:23 | John 9:2–3 explicitly counters strict retributive suffering-equals-sin readings; flag for teaching note re: karma-inference risk. |
| Kingdom of God | ဘုရားသခင်၏နိုင်ငံတော် | Medium | 3:3, 5; 18:36 (Christ’s own kingdom, related sense) | |
| Law | ပညတ်တရား | High | 1:17, 45; 7:19, 23, 49, 51; 8:5, 17; 19:7 | John 1:17 pairs law (given through Moses) against grace and truth (through Christ) — key contrast verse. |
| Messiah | မေရှိယ | Critical | 1:41; 4:25 | John explicitly glosses “Messiah…which means Christ” — the one NT text making this equivalence explicit in-line. |
| Israel | ဣသရေလ | Medium | 1:31, 49; 3:10; 12:13 | |
| Peace | ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်း | Medium | 14:27; 16:33; 20:19, 21, 26 | Contrasted explicitly with worldly peace at 14:27. |
| Election / Calling (conceptually parallel) | ရွေးကောက်ခြင်း / ခေါ်တော်မူခြင်း | High | cf. 6:44’s ἑλκύω (“draw”), see glossary section B | John uses “draw” (ἑλκύω) rather than Paul’s election vocabulary; conceptually parallel doctrine, distinct Greek term — see new entry below. |
| Apostle / Mission (root) | တမန်တော် / သာသနာပြုလုပ်ငန်း | Medium | 20:21’s ἀποστέλλω/πέμπω commissioning | Same root word-family as Paul’s ἀπόστολος. |
| David (Seed of David, related) | ဒါဝိဒ် | Low–Medium | 7:42 | Minor role compared to Romans; cf. baseline seed_of_david entry conceptually. |
B. New Terms Introduced by John’s Gospel (Status: New — John)
These terms are not present in the Romans baseline and require formal addition to translation_memory.json v2 / bible_term_registry.json v2. Each entry below gives the proposed Burmese rendering, transliteration, risk tier, associated doctrine, and rationale, following the same forbidden-substitution and culture-collision methodology as the baseline.
| # | English Term | Original (Greek) | Transliteration | Proposed Burmese Rendering | Risk | Doctrine | Key John Passages | Notes / Forbidden Substitutions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Word (Logos) | λόγος | logos | နှုတ်ကပတ်တော် | Critical | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | 1:1–3, 14 | Established Myanmar Bible term. Never reduce to an abstract impersonal “reason/principle” or a created intermediary being. |
| 2 | Life / Eternal Life | ζωή / ζωὴ αἰώνιος | zōē / zōē aiōnios | အသက် / ထာဝရအသက် | Critical | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ | 1:4; 3:15–16, 36; 5:24; 6:27–68; 10:28; 11:25; 17:2–3; 20:31 | NEVER equate with နိဗ္ဗာန်ရောက်ခြင်း (nirvana-attainment). Relationally defined at 17:3 as knowing the Father and Son — not self-attained cessation of craving. |
| 3 | Light | φῶς | phōs | အလင်းတော် (of Christ) / အလင်း (generic) | High | Deity of Christ; Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | 1:4–9; 3:19–21; 8:12; 9:5; 12:35–36, 46 | Distinguish from inward “enlightenment” attainment concepts; this Light is an incarnate Person who has objectively come into the world. |
| 4 | Darkness | σκότος / σκοτία | skotos / skotia | မှောင်မိုက် | Medium | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | 1:5; 3:19; 12:35, 46 | Culpable moral rejection of revealed light, not impersonal defilement (ကိလေသာ) dissolved by one’s own practice. |
| 5 | Grace and Truth (paired) | χάρις καὶ ἀλήθεια | charis kai alētheia | ကျေးဇူးတော်နှင့် သမ္မာတရား | Critical | God’s Love for the World; Fulfillment of the Law | 1:14, 16–17 | John’s own grace-vs-law contrast verse; treat with the same weight as Romans’s grace-vs-merit doctrine. |
| 6 | Truth | ἀλήθεια | alētheia | သမ္မာတရား | High | The Seven “I Am” Statements; Holy Spirit as Counselor | 1:14, 17; 4:23–24; 8:31–32; 14:6, 17; 16:13; 17:17; 18:37–38 | သမ္မာ shares its root with the Noble Eightfold Path’s “samma-” terms (Right View, etc.); requires a standing collision note that biblical truth is a Person to be known/trusted, not primarily an ethical-correctness code achieved by discipline. |
| 7 | Only Begotten / One and Only | μονογενής | monogenēs | တစ်ပါးတည်းသောသားတော် | Critical | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ; Sonship of Christ | 1:14, 18; 3:16, 18 | Absolute uniqueness (μόνος) must be unambiguous — never “most excellent among several,” never a merit-elevated being. |
| 8 | Lamb of God | ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ | ho amnos tou theou | ဘုရားသခင်၏ သိုးသငယ်တော် | Critical | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | 1:29, 36 | Requires explicit OT Passover/sacrificial-substitution background teaching; risk of being heard as mere endearment without that background. |
| 9 | Rabbi / Teacher | ῥαββί / διδάσκαλος | rabbi / didaskalos | ရဗ္ဗိ / ဆရာ | Medium | Apostleship (parallel doctrine) | 1:38, 49; 3:2, 10 | Use plain ဆရာ, avoiding the senior-monk honorific register of ဆရာတော်/ဆရာကြီး (cf. baseline “apostle” note). |
| 10 | Born Again / From Above | γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν | gennēthē anōthen | တစ်ဖန်မွေးခြင်း (+ note on “from above”) | Critical | The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | 3:3, 7; cf. 3:31 | NEVER ပြန်လည်မွေးဖွားခြင်း — the identical rebirth/reincarnation risk the baseline already forbids for “resurrection” applies with even greater intuitive force here. A single, permanent, Spirit-wrought transformation within this life, not a transition to a new incarnation nor a step toward better rebirth. |
| 11 | Flesh | σάρξ | sarx | ဇာတိ / အသား | High | The New Birth; Christ’s Substitutionary Death | 1:14 (positive, of the Incarnation); 3:6 (negative, of unaided human nature); 6:51–58 (sacrificial) | Note the same root word carries three distinct theological valences across John — requires context-sensitive teaching notes at each occurrence, distinguished from the positive baseline term လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း (“incarnation”). |
| 12 | Wind / Spirit (pun) | πνεῦμα | pneuma | လေ (wind) / ဝိညာဉ်တော် (Spirit) | High | The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | 3:8 | The single Greek word’s dual sense is unavoidably lost in Burmese’s two separate words; requires a translator note reconstructing the analogy explicitly. |
| 13 | Son of Man | υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου | huios tou anthrōpou | လူသား | High | Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (combined with full humanity) | 1:51; 3:13–14; 5:27; 6:27, 53, 62; 8:28; 9:35; 12:23, 34; 13:31 | Distinguish from [Baseline] ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော် — complementary titles (full humanity + Danielic authority), not synonyms. |
| 14 | World | κόσμος | kosmos | လောက | High | God’s Love for the World; Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | 1:9–10; 3:16–19; 7:7; 15:18–19; 17:14–16 | Distinguish John’s moral-relational sense (loved by God / in rebellion against him) from the Buddhist cosmological sense of လောက as realms of samsaric existence. |
| 15 | Perish | ἀπόλλυμι | apollymi | ဆုံးရှုံးခြင်း | Medium | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | 3:16; 10:28; 17:12 | Decisive, final ruin — not one point on a graded karmic decline scale. |
| 16 | Judge / Condemn / Judgment | κρίνω / κρίσις / κατακρίνω | krinō / krisis / katakrinō | တရားစီရင်ခြင်း / တရားစီရင်ချက် | High | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | 3:17–19; 5:22, 24, 27–30; 8:16, 26; 9:39; 12:31, 48 | Present, standing verdict language (esp. perfect tense κέκριται, 3:18) must not be softened into a merely future or provisional status. |
| 17 | Testimony / Witness | μαρτυρία / μαρτυρέω | martyria / martyreō | သက်သေခံခြင်း | Medium | Inspiration of Scripture; Fulfillment of Prophecy | 1:7–8, 32–34; 3:11, 32–33; 5:31–39; 8:14–18; 15:26–27; 19:35; 21:24 | Render consistently across all occurrences for cross-document coherence; John’s forensic fourfold-witness structure (Baptist, Father, works, Scripture) at ch.5 is theologically load-bearing. |
| 18 | I AM (absolute self-declaration) | ἐγώ εἰμι | egō eimi | ငါဖြစ်၏ / ငါသည်ပင်ဖြစ်၏ | Critical | The Seven “I Am” Statements; Deity and Pre-existence of Christ | 6:20, 35; 8:12, 24, 28, 58; 10:7, 9, 11, 14; 11:25; 13:19; 14:6; 15:1, 5; 18:5–6, 8 | Highest-stakes single rendering decision in the Gospel. Absolute (unqualified) occurrences require a standing Exodus 3:14 translator note; must never read as a mere grammatical copula. Mandatory theologian review at every absolute occurrence. |
| 19 | Bread of Life | ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς | artos tēs zōēs | အသက်မုန့် | High | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ (first “I Am”) | 6:35, 48, 51 | Exclusive, unearned sustenance — cannot be equated with dāna-style merit offerings of food. |
| 20 | Living Water | ὕδωρ ζῶν | hydōr zōn | အသက်ရေ | High | Eternal Life; Holy Spirit as Counselor | 4:10–14; 7:37–39 | Explicitly identified with the Holy Spirit at 7:39 — Burmese rendering must preserve this direct identification, not leave it as vague metaphor. |
| 21 | Drawing | ἑλκύω | helkyō | ဆွဲငင်ခြင်း | High | (Parallel to) Election / Effectual Calling | 6:44; 12:32 | NEVER ကံဇာတာ (karma-fixed destiny) — sovereign, personal, effectual divine initiative. |
| 22 | Good Shepherd | ὁ ποιμὴν ὁ καλός | ho poimēn ho kalos | ကောင်းမွန်သောသိုးထိန်း | Medium | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (fourth “I Am”) | 10:11, 14 | |
| 23 | Door / Gate | ἡ θύρα | hē thyra | တံခါး | Medium | Eternal Life (third “I Am”) | 10:7, 9 | Exclusive access — no alternate door. |
| 24 | Lay Down One’s Life | τίθημι τὴν ψυχήν | tithēmi tēn psychēn | အသက်ကို စွန့်တော်မူခြင်း | Critical | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | 10:11, 15, 17–18; 15:13 | Voluntary, sovereign, purposeful self-offering — not a death that merely happens to Christ. |
| 25 | I and the Father Are One | ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν | egō kai ho patēr hen esmen | ငါနှင့်အဖသည် တစ်လုံးတစ်ဝတည်း ဖြစ်တော်မူ၏ | Critical | Unity of the Father and the Son | 10:30 | Must avoid both modalist collapse (same person, different names) and mere-agreement reduction (unity of purpose only, denying shared essence). Theologian review mandatory. |
| 26 | Resurrection and the Life | ἡ ἀνάστασις καὶ ἡ ζωή | hē anastasis kai hē zōē | ထမြောက်ခြင်းနှင့် အသက်တော် | Critical | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection (fifth “I Am”) | 11:25 | Combines two Baseline/New terms; see also next entry for the Lazarus distinction. |
| 27 | Temporary Revival (Lazarus, distinct from Christ’s resurrection) | ἐξῆλθεν ὁ τεθνηκώς | exēlthen ho tethnēkōs | ပြန်လည်ရှင်စေခြင်း | High | Resurrection of Christ (by contrast) | 11:43–44 | Must NOT use ထမြောက်ခြင်း for Lazarus, to preserve the uniqueness of Christ’s own permanent, glorified resurrection as the pattern’s firstfruits. Theologian review required to confirm this distinction is maintained in all derivative lesson materials. |
| 28 | Ruler of This World | ὁ ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου | ho archōn tou kosmou toutou | ဤလောက၏ အုပ်စိုးသူ | High | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief (cosmic conflict) | 12:31; 14:30; 16:11 | A real, personal, already-defeated cosmic antagonist — not an impersonal principle of disorder. |
| 29 | Devil / Father of Lies | ὁ διάβολος | ho diabolos | မာရ်နတ် | High | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | 8:44 | နတ် root risks conflation with the folk-venerated 37 guardian nats; requires standing note that this is a personal fallen being in real moral conflict with God, not a nat to be placated, nor a psychologized personification of one’s own craving. |
| 30 | New Commandment | ἐντολὴ καινή | entolē kainē | ပညတ်တော်အသစ် | Medium | (Ethical outworking of) Unity/Love | 13:34 | Distinguish from the Mosaic ပညတ်တရား (Law) referenced elsewhere in John (1:17; 7:19) — a specific relational command, not a replacement legal code. |
| 31 | Counselor / Paraclete | παράκλητος | paraklētos | ကူညီသူ (paired with သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော်) | Critical | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7 | New term for this curriculum (absent from Romans). Must always be paired with the Baseline Holy Spirit term to guarantee divine personhood is unmistakable. NEVER a nat-spirit protector; NEVER a merely psychological/self-generated comfort. Mandatory theologian sign-off before Phase 2. |
| 32 | Spirit of Truth | τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας | to pneuma tēs alētheias | သမ္မာတရား၏ ဝိညာဉ်တော် | High | Holy Spirit as Counselor | 14:17; 15:26; 16:13 | Compound of Baseline Holy Spirit term + New Truth term. |
| 33 | Abide | μένω | menō | တည်နေခြင်း | Medium | (Union with Christ, parallel to) Christian Identity in Christ | 15:4–10 | Ongoing relational dependence, not a one-time event nor a self-directed meditative attainment. |
| 34 | Love (ἀγαπάω/φιλέω, distinguished in Greek, collapsed in Burmese) | ἀγαπάω / φιλέω | agapaō / phileō | ချစ်ခြင်း (both) | High | God’s Love for the World; ethical outworking | 3:16 (ἀγαπάω); 13:34–35; 21:15–17 (both verbs in dialogue) | Burmese lacks a lexicalized two-term distinction; the 21:15–17 rhetorical shift between the two Greek verbs will be invisible without a mandatory translator/footnote. |
| 35 | Glorify | δοξάζω | doxazō | ဘုန်းတော်ထင်ရှားစေခြင်း | High | Deity of Christ; Christ’s Substitutionary Death | 12:23, 28; 13:31–32; 17:1, 5, 10, 22, 24; 21:19 | Built on Baseline ဘုန်းတော် root; verb form for the act of making glory manifest. |
| 36 | Sanctify | ἁγιάζω | hagiazō | သန့်ရှင်းစေခြင်း | High | (Extension of) Sanctification | 17:17, 19 | Built on Baseline သန့်ရှင်းခြင်း root. |
| 37 | That They May Be One | ἵνα ὦσιν ἕν | hina ōsin hen | တစ်လုံးတစ်ဝတည်း ဖြစ်ကြပါစေ | Critical | Unity of the Father and the Son (extended to believers) | 17:11, 21–23 | Believers’ unity is relational/Spirit-given, patterned on but not ontologically identical to the Father-Son unity; avoid both mere-social-harmony and literal-merger readings. |
| 38 | Lifted Up | ὑψόω / ὑψωθῆναι | hypsoō / hypsōthēnai | မြှောက်တင်ခြင်း | High | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (and exaltation) | 3:14; 8:28; 12:32–34 | Deliberate double meaning (crucified / exalted) must be preserved consistently across all three occurrences. |
| 39 | It Is Finished | τετέλεσται | tetelestai | ပြီးပြီ | Critical | Christ’s Substitutionary Death | 19:30 | Completed, once-for-all accomplishment of redemption requiring no supplementary merit or ritual repetition — direct contrast with ongoing Buddhist merit-accumulation logic. |
| 40 | Sign | σημεῖον | sēmeion | နိမိတ်လက္ခဏာ | Medium | (Evidentiary basis for) Faith | 2:11, 23; 4:54; 6:2, 14, 26; 9:16; 11:47; 12:37; 20:30–31 | Avoid divinatory-omen (ဗေဒင်) associations; these are meaning-bearing acts pointing to Christ’s identity, given to produce faith. |
| 41 | Worship | προσκυνέω | proskyneō | ဝတ်ပြုကိုးကွယ်ခြင်း | High | God’s Love for the World; right response to Christ | 4:20–24; 9:38; 12:20 | Exclusively directed to the one true God/Christ — distinguish from veneration (ရှိခိုးခြင်း/ပူဇော်ခြင်း) of Buddha images, pagodas, or nat shrines. |
| 42 | Sabbath | σάββατον | sabbaton | ဥပုသ်နေ့ | High | (Occasion for controversy regarding) Deity of Christ | 5:9–18; 7:22–23; 9:14–16; 19:31 | Collides with the Buddhist Uposatha lunar observance/fasting day; requires standing note distinguishing covenantal creation-rest from merit-observance, paralleling the Baseline’s law/Vinaya distinction. |
| 43 | Wrath of God | ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ | orgē tou theou | ဘုရားသခင်၏ အမျက်တော် | High | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | 3:36 | Holy, personal, judicial displeasure — not a placatable nat’s anger nor an impersonal karmic reaction. |
| 44 | Blood and Water | αἷμα καὶ ὕδωρ | haima kai hydōr | သွေးနှင့်ရေ | Medium | (Confirmation of) Christ’s Substitutionary Death | 19:34–35 | |
| 45 | Fulfilled the Scripture | πληρωθῇ ἡ γραφή | plērōthē hē graphē | ကျမ်းစာပြည့်စုံစေခြင်း | High | Fulfillment of Prophecy | 12:38; 13:18; 15:25; 17:12; 19:24, 28, 36–37 | |
| 46 | Temple | ἱερόν / ναός | hieron / naos | ဗိမာန်တော် | Medium | (Setting for) Deity of Christ | 2:14–21; 5:14; 7:14, 28; 10:23; 18:20 | Distinguish from ဘုရားကျောင်း/ဘုရားရိပ်သာ (pagoda), per Baseline “church” note. At 2:19–21 ναός shifts to mean Christ’s own body — flag this shift explicitly. |
| 47 | King (of the Jews) | βασιλεύς (τῶν Ἰουδαίων) | basileus (tōn Ioudaiōn) | ရှင်ဘုရင် | High | Lordship of Christ (ironic royal proclamation) | 1:49; 12:13, 15; 18:33, 37, 39; 19:3, 14–15, 19, 21 | Distinct from Baseline သခင် (Lord); a political-title term used with dramatic irony of Christ’s true, unrecognized kingship. |
| 48 | My Lord and My God | ὁ κύριος μου καὶ ὁ θεός μου | ho kyrios mou kai ho theos mou | ကျွန်တော်၏ သခင်၊ ကျွန်တော်၏ ဘုရားသခင် | Critical | Deity of Christ; Lordship of Christ | 20:28 | Built entirely on two fixed Baseline terms (သခင်, ဘုရားသခင်); the Gospel’s climactic explicit deity confession — exact phrasing must remain fixed across all derivative materials. |
| 49 | Believe and Have Life (purpose statement) | ἵνα πιστεύσητε…ζωὴν ἔχητε | hina pisteusēte…zōēn echēte | ယုံကြည်ခြင်းအားဖြင့် အသက်ရှင်ကြပါစေ | Critical | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ | 20:31 | John’s own stated purpose verse; per the cross-document consistency principle established in the Romans baseline for Rom 1:16–17, this rendering must be fixed and identical across every lesson referencing it. |
| 50 | Feed / Tend My Sheep | βόσκε / ποίμαινε τὰ πρόβατά μου | boske / poimaine ta probata mou | ကျွေးမွေးခြင်း / ထိန်းကျောင်းခြင်း | Medium | (Pastoral extension of) Christ’s Substitutionary Death imagery | 21:15–17 | |
| 51 | Samaritans | Σαμαρῖται | Samaritai | ရှမာရိလူမျိုး | Medium | (Parallel to) Unity of Jews and Gentiles | 4:1–42 | Ethnic-tension parallel to Burma’s majority/minority dynamics; native-speaker review recommended. |
| 52 | Freedom (from sin’s slavery) | ἐλευθερόω / ἐλεύθερος | eleutheroō / eleutheros | လွတ်လပ်စေခြင်း | High | (Effect of) Belief/Unbelief and Truth | 8:32, 36 | Keep distinct from Baseline ကယ်တင်ခြင်း (salvation) — a specific effect of the same saving work, not an interchangeable synonym; also distinct from Baseline’s rejected လွတ်မြောက်ခြင်း alternative for salvation. |
| 53 | Slave to Sin | δοῦλος τῆς ἁμαρτίας | doulos tēs hamartias | အပြစ်၏ကျွန် | High | Universal Human Accountability (extended) | 8:34 | |
| 54 | Blindness (physical/spiritual double sense) | τυφλός | typhlos | မျက်စိကန်းခြင်း | Medium | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | 9:1–41 | John 9:2–3 explicitly resists a strict affliction-equals-personal-sin inference; flag against retributive-karma reading. |

This glossary extends, and in all overlapping cases defers exactly to, the Romans baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json. All Critical and High risk “New — John” entries above must be routed to human theologian review, and all Medium entries to native speaker review, before any Phase 2 segment translation of John proceeds, per the escalation rules in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Terms
Born Again From Above
Approved rendering: တစ်ဖန်မွေးခြင်း
Transliteration: ta-bhan mway-chin
Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Rejected alternatives: ပြန်လည်မွေးဖွားခြင်း
Original: γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM (John). CRITICAL: NEVER ပြန်လည်မွေးဖွားခြင်း (rebirth within samsara) — the single highest cumulative risk surface in translating John. Must be accompanied at every occurrence by an explicit qualifier for ἄνωθεν’s ‘from above’ sense (e.g., အထက်မှ ဝိညာဉ်တော်အားဖြင့်) and a standing note: a single, permanent, Spirit-wrought transformation within this life, not a step toward better rebirth or accumulated merit. Occurs John 3:3, 7; cf. 3:31.
Counselor Paraclete
Approved rendering: ကူညီသူ
Transliteration: ku-nyi-thu
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Rejected alternatives: နတ်ကာကွယ်သူ, စိတ်ချမ်းသာမှုပေးသူ
Original: παράκλητος
Category: God
NEW TERM (John), absent from the Romans baseline. Must ALWAYS pair with baseline ‘holy_spirit’ to make divine personhood unmistakable. NEVER a nat-spirit personal guardian-helper; NEVER an impersonal, self-generated ‘peace of mind’. Mandatory theologian sign-off at every occurrence: John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7.
Eternal Life
Approved rendering: ထာဝရအသက်
Transliteration: htawara a-thet
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Rejected alternatives: နိဗ္ဗာန်ရောက်ခြင်း
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM (John). CRITICAL: NEVER equate with နိဗ္ဗာန်ရောက်ခြင်း. Relationally defined at 17:3 as knowing the Father and Son — a gift received by faith, not achieved by discipline. Occurs John 3:15-16, 36; 5:24; 6:27-68; 10:28; 11:25; 17:2-3; 20:31.
Father
Approved rendering: အဖ
Transliteration: a-pha
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ဗြဟ္မာ
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE (unchanged). CRITICAL: Never ဗြဟ္မာ. John is the most theologically dense NT book for this term (1:14, 18; 3:35; 5:17-23; 8:38-44; 10:30; 14-17 passim); central to the Unity of the Father and the Son doctrine.
God
Approved rendering: ဘုရားသခင်
Transliteration: Phayarthakhin
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ဘုရား, နတ်သခင်
Original: θεός
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE (unchanged). CRITICAL: Referent of the Word’s own deity (John 1:1c) and of Thomas’s climactic confession (20:28); never ဘုရား alone or နတ်သခင်.
Grace And Truth
Approved rendering: ကျေးဇူးတော်နှင့် သမ္မာတရား
Transliteration: kyayzu-taw hnin thanmar-tayar
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: χάρις καὶ ἀλήθεια
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM (John). Compound of baseline ‘grace’ and new ‘truth’; John 1:17’s own grace-vs-law contrast verse, equal in doctrinal weight to Romans’s central grace-vs-merit argument. Occurs John 1:14, 16-17.
Grace
Approved rendering: ကျေးဇူးတော်
Transliteration: kyayzu-taw
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: ကုသိုလ်, ကံကောင်းခြင်း, ဝါသနာတော်
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE (unchanged). CRITICAL: Never use ကုသိုလ် or ကံကောင်းခြင်း. Directly required at John 1:14, 16-17 (grace and truth vs. the Law), John’s own foundational grace-vs-merit verse, equal in weight to Romans’s central doctrine.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော်
Transliteration: thangyinthaw weinnyin-taw
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: နတ်ဝိညာဉ်, ဝိညာဉ်

I Am
Approved rendering: ငါဖြစ်၏
Transliteration: nga hpyit-i
Doctrine: The Seven “I Am” Statements
Rejected alternatives: ငါဖြစ်ခဲ့ပြီ, ငါသည်ရှိခဲ့သည်
Original: ἐγώ εἰμι
Category: Christology
NEW TERM (John). Absolute divine self-declaration echoing Exodus 3:14 LXX. Must carry theophanic weight, not read as a mere grammatical copula. Mandatory theologian review and standing Exodus 3:14 translator note at every absolute occurrence (John 8:24, 28, 58; 13:19; 18:5-6, 8), and at predicated ‘I Am’ statements (6:35; 8:12; 10:7, 9, 11, 14; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1, 5). FORBIDDEN: any past-tense-compatible rendering (Watchtower pattern at 8:58).
I And Father Are One
Approved rendering: ငါနှင့်အဖသည် တစ်လုံးတစ်ဝတည်း ဖြစ်တော်မူ၏

It Is Finished
Approved rendering: ပြီးပြီ
Transliteration: pyi-byi
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: τετέλεσται

Jesus
Approved rendering: ယေရှု
Transliteration: Yayshu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ရှင်ယေရှု
Original: Ἰησοῦς

Transliteration: Phayarthakhin i thoe-thangeh-taw
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ

Approved rendering: အသက်ကို စွန့်တော်မူခြင်း
Transliteration: a-thet-ko sun-taw-mu-chin

Original: τίθημι τὴν ψυχήν
Category: Christology
NEW TERM (John). Must communicate voluntary, sovereign, purposeful self-offering (‘I have authority to lay it down and to take it up again,’ 10:18) — not a death that merely happens to Christ. Occurs John 10:11, 15, 17-18; 15:13.
Messiah
Approved rendering: မေရှိယ
Transliteration: Mei-shi-ya
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: အရေးတော်ပုံလာမည့်သူ, မိတ္တေယျ
Original: Μεσσίας / Χριστός
Category: Christology
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE (unchanged). CRITICAL: NEVER မိတ္တေယျ. John explicitly glosses the term at 1:41 and 4:25 (‘Messiah, which means Christ’) — the one NT text making this equivalence explicit in-line.
My Lord And My God
Approved rendering: ကျွန်တော်၏ သခင်၊ ကျွန်တော်၏ ဘုရားသခင်
Transliteration: kyundaw i thakhin, kyundaw i Phayarthakhin
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: ὁ κύριος μου καὶ ὁ θεός μου
Category: Christology
NEW TERM (John). Built entirely on the two fixed baseline terms ‘lord’ and ‘god’. The Gospel’s climactic deity-and-lordship confession (Thomas speaks directly to the risen Christ, εἶπεν αὐτῷ). Exact phrasing must remain fixed across every derivative document. Occurs John 20:28. FORBIDDEN: redirecting the confession’s addressee away from the risen Jesus (Watchtower pattern).
Only Begotten
Approved rendering: တစ်ပါးတည်းသောသားတော်
Transliteration: ta-bar-te-thaw thar-taw
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: အထူးချစ်ခင်ရသောသား, အကြီးဆုံးသားတော်
Original: μονογενής
Category: Christology

Resurrection And Life
Approved rendering: ထမြောက်ခြင်းနှင့် အသက်တော်ဖြစ်တော်မူခြင်း

Doctrine: The Seven “I Am” Statements
Original: ἡ ἀνάστασις καὶ ἡ ζωή

Resurrection
Approved rendering: ထမြောက်ခြင်း

Transliteration: khaw-taw-mu-chin

Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: ὁ διάβολος
Category: Sin

Category: Salvation
NEW TERM (John). Must remain distinct from baseline ‘salvation’ (a specific effect of the same saving work, not an interchangeable synonym) and distinct from the baseline’s already-rejected လွတ်မြောက်ခြင်း, to avoid a generic secular-liberation reading. Occurs John 8:32, 36.

Original: ἀγαπάω / φιλέω

NEW TERM (John). Burmese lacks a lexicalized two-term ἀγαπάω/φιλέω distinction; the rhetorical shift at 21:15-17 will invisibly collapse into one word without a mandatory translator footnote. Occurs John 3:16 (ἀγαπάω only); 13:34-35; 21:15-17 (both verbs, load-bearing).

Category: Covenant
NEW TERM (John). ဥပုသ်နေ့ is simultaneously the specific Burmese Buddhist Uposatha lunar precept-observance day; every occurrence risks importing a merit-observance framework onto covenantal creation-rest. Requires a standing note at each of four occurrences: John 5:9-18; 7:22-23; 9:14-16; 19:31.
