Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — Hebrews (Full Book) with Core Passage Verse-by-Verse Treatment

Purpose and Method

This document analyzes every load-bearing theological term in Hebrews in the original Koine Greek, chapter by chapter, first to last. The core passage, Hebrews 9:11-28, receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing terms using the same fields: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and destination-language (Burmese) rendering with risk assessment.

Per the mandate, any term already established in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json MUST be reused exactly in its recorded Burmese form. These reused terms are marked [REUSED FROM ROMANS TM] and are given abbreviated treatment (their full field analysis already exists in the baseline); new Hebrews-specific senses of a reused term are still flagged where they introduce fresh risk.

Risk tiers (Critical / High / Medium / Low) follow the baseline’s doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions exactly.

PART A — CORE PASSAGE: Hebrews 9:11-28 (Verse-by-Verse)

Hebrews 9:11

[REUSED FROM ROMANS TM — proper name form ခရစ်တော်, per baseline transliteration standards]. Contextual meaning: the one who has now arrived as the priestly fulfillment of every OT type. Burmese: ခရစ်တော်. Risk: Critical (Sonship/Messiahship compounded — see doctrine registry entries messianic_promise, sonship_of_christ).
  • ἀρχιερεύς (archiereus) — literally “chief/first priest.” Semantic range: the single high priest who alone entered the Holy of Holies once yearly (Lev. 16). English variants: “high priest,” “chief priest.” Contextual meaning: Christ now holds and fulfills this singular OT office perfectly and permanently. Risk: Critical — must never be rendered with any term evoking Buddhist monastic hierarchy (e.g., ဆရာတော်ကြီး, “great senior abbot,” or ရဟန်းချုပ်, “chief monk”), since the high priest’s role is substitutionary mediation before a personal God through blood, not personal merit-cultivation or teaching authority. This is the anchor term for the doctrine “Christ as the Great High Priest.”
  • μείζων…τελειοτέρα σκηνή (meizōn…teleiotera skēnē) — “greater and more perfect tent.” σκηνή = tabernacle/tent, established OT term. τελειοτέρας (comparative of τέλειος, “perfect/complete”) — Risk: Critical. See dedicated treatment of τέλειος/τελειόω under 9:11 note below; must NEVER be rendered with ပါရမီ (parami), the Buddhist doctrine of the ten perfections a Bodhisatta cultivates across countless lifetimes to attain Buddhahood. Burmese rendering: ပို၍ စေ့စုံသော (more fully complete). Reason for Critical tier: a Burmese Buddhist reader encountering “perfect tabernacle” risks importing the entire parami framework — a self-cultivated, multi-life accumulation — precisely the opposite of Hebrews’ point that this greater tent is God-given and entered by another’s completed work.
  • οὐ χειροποιήτου (ou cheiropoiētou) — “not made with/by hands.” Semantic range: not of human manufacture, therefore not earthly/temporary. Risk: Low — mainly requires OT tabernacle background teaching.
  • κτίσις (ktisis) — “creation.” Contextual meaning: this tent is not part of the created, physical order at all but heavenly/eternal. Risk: Low.

Hebrews 9:12

Semantic range: physical lifeblood; in Levitical ritual, the substance of atonement. English variants: “blood.” Contextual meaning: the substitutionary life-payment for sin. Burmese: သွေး (thway). Risk: High — Burmese folk religion and Buddhism have no comparable category of blood-atonement before a personal deity; there is real risk of the concept being read as merely gruesome ritual detail rather than the substitutionary payment it represents. Requires explicit teaching, not lexical substitution.
  • τράγος / μόσχος (tragos/moschos) — “goat / calf (young bull).” OT sacrificial animals. Burmese: ဆိတ်၊ နွားလား. Risk: Low.
  • ἐφάπαξ (ephapax) — “once for all,” intensified form of ἅπαξ. Semantic range: a single, non-repeatable, permanently sufficient act. English variants: “once for all,” “once and for all,” “one time only.” Contextual meaning: the central structural contrast of Hebrews 7-10 — Christ’s single sacrifice versus the endlessly repeated Levitical sacrifices. Burmese rendering: တစ်ကြိမ်တည်း (ta-kyein-tè). Risk: High — this adverb carries enormous doctrinal weight (doctrine: “The Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice”) and stands in direct tension with a Buddhist cyclical worldview of repeated merit-making and repeated rebirth; translators must resist any softening toward “regularly” or “the first time” and must never allow it to be read as merely one instance among a repeatable pattern.
  • τὰ ἅγια (ta hagia) — “the holy places,” i.e., the sanctuary/Most Holy Place. [Base adjective ἅγιος REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: သန့်ရှင်းသော]. Risk: Medium — physical sacred-space vocabulary risks blending with pagoda/shrine sanctity categories; must be taught as the place of God’s own presence, entered by Christ’s blood, not a site made holy by ritual observance.
  • αἰωνία λύτρωσις (aiōnia lytrōsis) — “eternal redemption.” λύτρωσις = a ransoming/buying back by payment, from λύτρον (“ransom price”). English variants: “redemption,” “ransom.” Contextual meaning: a permanent, complete deliverance secured by payment (Christ’s own blood), never to be repeated or lost. Risk: High — must be taught as payment made once by another on the believer’s behalf, not a state gradually purchased through accumulated merit or good deeds (ကုသိုလ်စုဆောင်းခြင်း, already rejected in the baseline for imputed_righteousness).
  • αἰώνιος (aiōnios) — “eternal.” Risk: High as a recurring modifier throughout Hebrews (covenant, redemption, inheritance, salvation, judgment, Spirit) — see dedicated treatment under Ch. 5 and Ch. 9 general notes; Burmese: ထာဝရ (htawara).

Hebrews 9:13-14

  • σποδὸς δαμάλεως (spodos damaleōs) — “ashes of a heifer” (Num. 19 red-heifer rite). Risk: Low — background-knowledge item only.
  • ῥαντίζω (rhantizō) — “to sprinkle.” Ritual application of blood/water for purification. Burmese: ပက်ဖျန်းသည် (pet-hpyan thi). Risk: Medium — the physical act itself is not risky, but must be taught as symbolic of an accomplished cleansing, not an ongoing repeatable ritual technology.
  • ἁγιάζω (hagiazō) — “to sanctify/make holy.” [Cognate of REUSED ROMANS TM term sanctification: သန့်ရှင်းခြင်း]. Contextual note: here describes only outward, ceremonial (flesh-level) sanctification under the old order, deliberately contrasted with the deeper conscience-cleansing Christ accomplishes in the next clause. Risk: High — this verse’s whole rhetorical point depends on distinguishing ceremonial (outer) sanctification from the deeper (inner) sanctification Christ gives; flattening both into one Burmese term risks losing Hebrews’ “how much more” argument.
  • σάρξ (sarx) — “flesh,” here = the physical/bodily level of ritual purity. Risk: Low.
  • πνεῦμα αἰώνιον (pneuma aiōnion) — “eternal Spirit.” Likely referring to the Holy Spirit’s role in Christ’s self-offering, or Christ’s own eternal spirit. [Holy Spirit REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော်]. Risk: Critical as with all Holy Spirit references — must never drift toward ဝိညာဉ် alone (a spirit/ghost) given Theravada’s denial of any permanent self (anatta); here the “eternal” qualifier makes the collision especially acute, since it asserts a permanent divine person against a worldview built on impermanence.
  • ἄμωμος (amōmos) — “without blemish/spot.” Sacrificial-animal purity language applied to Christ himself. Risk: Medium — must convey moral sinlessness, not merely physical wholeness.
  • καθαρίζω (katharizō) — “to cleanse/purify.” Risk: High — Burmese religious vocabulary strongly associates purification with self-performed ritual ablution (bathing at pagodas, precept-observance); this verse must be taught as an accomplished, received cleansing achieved by another’s blood, not a ritual one performs on oneself.
  • συνείδησις (syneidēsis) — “conscience,” literally “co-knowledge” (moral self-awareness). English variants: “conscience,” “moral awareness.” Contextual meaning: the inner faculty of guilt/moral accountability that animal blood could never reach, but Christ’s blood cleanses. Burmese rendering: သိစိတ် (thi-seik) or အသိတရား (a-thi-tayar). Risk: Medium — Burmese philosophical/Buddhist vocabulary uses related terms for consciousness/awareness (e.g., ဝိညာဏ် as a psychological/philosophical term for a moment-by-moment consciousness-stream); translators must clarify that Hebrews’ “conscience” is a specifically moral faculty accountable to a personal God, not the impersonal aggregate-consciousness of Buddhist psychology.
  • νεκρὰ ἔργα (nekra erga) — “dead works.” Contextual meaning: religious/ritual acts that cannot produce life or genuine standing with God — echoed again at 6:1. Risk: High — in a culture where merit-generating acts (ကုသိုလ်ပြုခြင်း) are the central religious activity of daily life, “dead works” risks being misheard as a critique only of insincere religion, rather than Hebrews’ actual claim that ALL law-works and ritual-works — sincerely performed — are powerless to cleanse the conscience apart from Christ’s blood.
  • λατρεύω (latreuō) — “to serve/render cultic service/worship.” Burmese: အမှုတော်ဆောင်ခြင်း (a-mu-taw-saung-chin) — consistent with the baseline’s separation_unto_gods_service doctrine language. Risk: Medium.
  • θεὸς ζῶν (theos zōn) — “the living God.” [God REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ဘုရားသခင်]. Risk: Critical (inherited from god/holy_spirit tier) — emphasizes God’s personal aliveness against any impersonal ultimate-reality reading.

Hebrews 9:15

  • διαθήκη καινή (diathēkē kainē) — “new covenant.” [Base term διαθήκη = covenant REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ပဋိညာဉ်]. Burmese rendering: ပဋိညာဉ်သစ် (padi-nyin thit). Risk: High — central to the named doctrine “The New Covenant versus the Old”; must be taught as God’s own new, better, permanently effective relational bond (Jer. 31:31-34, quoted in Heb. 8), not a renegotiated or improved contract, and not one religious dispensation superseded by a later, unrelated one — the newness is fulfillment, not replacement of God’s character or promise.
  • μεσίτης (mesitēs) — “mediator, go-between.” Semantic range: one who stands between two parties to establish or guarantee a relationship/agreement. English variants: “mediator,” “intermediary,” “go-between.” Contextual meaning: Christ alone secures the New Covenant relationship between God and his people. Risk: High — Burmese folk religion includes spirit-mediums (နတ်ကတော်) who mediate between humans and the nat-spirit world through trance/possession; Christ’s mediatorship must be sharply distinguished from this category as a unique, once-for-all, blood-based mediation by the God-man, not a repeatable spirit-channeling service.
  • θάνατος (thanatos) — “death.” [Related to resurrection doctrine, reuse pattern]. Burmese: သေခြင်း (thay-chin). Risk: Low here, though see 9:27 for the doctrinally weightier “appointed to die once.”
  • ἀπολύτρωσις (apolytrōsis) — intensified form of λύτρωσις, “redemption/ransoming.” Risk: High (same as 9:12).
  • παράβασις (parabasis) — “transgression,” literally “a stepping across/over” a boundary. Semantic range: a specific violation of a known standard (distinct from ἁμαρτία’s broader “sin”). English variants: “transgression,” “trespass,” “violation.” Burmese rendering: လွန်ကျူးမှု (lun-kyu-hmu). Risk: Medium — must be distinguished from the broader term “sin” (အပြစ်, REUSED FROM ROMANS TM) as a specific breach of the Mosaic law’s known boundaries.
  • πρώτη διαθήκη (prōtē diathēkē) — “first/former covenant,” i.e., the Mosaic/Old Covenant. Risk: High — same collision category as new covenant; must be taught as a genuine, God-given covenant now fulfilled and surpassed, not something false or worthless.
  • κεκλημένοι (keklēmenoi) — perfect participle of καλέω, “the ones having been called.” Contextual sense here = effectual calling to receive the promised inheritance. Risk: High (per baseline divine_calling/effectual_calling doctrine).
  • ἐπαγγελία (epangelia) — “promise.” Semantic range: a formal, binding pledge, especially God’s covenant pledges to the patriarchs. Burmese rendering: ကတိတော် (kadi-taw). Risk: Medium — must be conveyed as a personal pledge from a faithful, promise-keeping God, not an impersonal expectation arising from accumulated karmic momentum.
  • αἰωνία κληρονομία (aiōnia klēronomia) — “eternal inheritance.” κληρονομία = inheritance, property passed to an heir. [Conceptually linked to REUSED ROMANS TM doctrine adoption: သားအဖြစ်လက်ခံခြင်း, which already carries “full inheritance rights.”] Burmese rendering: ထာဝရ အမွေ (htawara amway). Risk: Medium-High — the Burmese customary-adoption inheritance concept transfers well culturally (as the baseline notes), but “eternal” must be stressed against any sense of a temporary or merit-conditioned inheritance.

Hebrews 9:16-17

  • διαθήκη (diathēkē) — here shifts sense within the same word to “will/testament” (a legal document activated by the testator’s death), creating a deliberate wordplay with “covenant” used throughout the rest of the chapter. Contextual theological meaning: just as a will takes effect only at the testator’s death, the New Covenant’s benefits are secured and activated by Christ’s death. Translation note: Burmese ပဋိညာဉ် does not carry a “last will and testament” sense, so this Greek wordplay cannot be reproduced lexically in Burmese. Risk: High (translation-mechanics risk) — flag every occurrence of this passage for a mandatory translator’s note explaining that the single Greek word διαθήκη covers both “covenant” and “will,” and that Paul-to-the-Hebrews’ author is trading on that double sense; a literal Burmese rendering using only ပဋိညာဉ် will read as a non sequitur unless the note is supplied.
  • διατίθεμαι (diatithemai) — “to make a will/covenant,” here as a participle “the one who made the will/covenant” (the testator). Risk: Medium (tied to the wordplay issue above).
  • βέβαιος (bebaios) — “firm, valid, in force.” Risk: Low.

Hebrews 9:18-19

  • ἐγκαινίζω (enkainizō) — “to inaugurate, dedicate, ratify.” Risk: Low.
  • νόμος (nomos) — “law.” [REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ပညတ်တရား]. Risk: High (per baseline — must not be rendered ဝိနည်း, the Buddhist monastic Vinaya code).
  • Μωϋσῆς (Mōusēs) — “Moses.” Proper name, established Myanmar Bible form: မောရှေ (per baseline transliteration standards in the Romans package, extended here). Risk: Medium — theological weight from the doctrine “Superiority of Christ over… Moses” requires Moses to be understood as a genuine, honored covenant-mediator, not a lesser or discredited figure, even as Christ’s superiority is affirmed.
  • ὕσσωπος (hyssōpos) — “hyssop,” a small bushy plant used for ritual sprinkling. Risk: Low.
Risk: Low.

Hebrews 9:20

  • αἷμα τῆς διαθήκης (haima tēs diathēkēs) — “the blood of the covenant” (quoting Exod. 24:8). Risk: High — directly anticipates Christ’s words at the Last Supper (“this is my blood of the covenant,” Matt. 26:28) and must be rendered identically in both testaments’ translation traditions for cross-reference clarity.
  • ἐντέλλομαι (entellomai) — “to command, charge.” Burmese: မိန့်မှာသည်. Risk: Low.

Hebrews 9:21

  • σκεῦος λειτουργίας (skeuos leitourgias) — “vessel/implement of service (ministry).” λειτουργία = cultic/liturgical service. Risk: Low — background vocabulary, but λειτουργία’s root connects to the “ministering spirits” of Heb. 1:14 (see Ch. 1 below) and should be rendered consistently.

Hebrews 9:22

  • αἱματεκχυσία (haimatekchysia) — “the shedding/pouring out of blood.” A rare compound coined for this context (αἷμα + ἐκχέω, “to pour out”). Risk: High — the phrase “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” is one of Hebrews’ most doctrinally load-bearing single clauses; must be rendered with unmistakable directness, not softened into a general statement about sacrifice.
  • ἄφεσις (aphesis) — “release, forgiveness, remission.” Semantic range: the cancelling/releasing of a debt or penalty. English variants: “forgiveness,” “remission,” “release.” Risk: High — must be conveyed as a judicial release granted by a personal God on the basis of a substitute’s blood, not a reduction of one’s negative karmic balance (အကုသိုလ်, already rejected in the baseline for “sin”) achieved by merit or the passage of time.

Hebrews 9:23

  • ὑπόδειγμα (hypodeigma) — “copy, pattern, model” (an earthly sketch pointing to a heavenly reality). English variants: “copy,” “pattern,” “example.” Risk: Medium — the whole “copy/shadow/heavenly reality” typological framework is culturally unfamiliar and needs explanatory teaching notes rather than a risky substitute term; there is no equivalent typological category in Burmese Buddhist thought.
  • ἐπουράνιος (epouranios) — “heavenly, in the heavens.” Risk: Medium — ကောင်းကင်ဘုံ risks overlap with Buddhist cosmology’s multiple heavenly/deva realms (ဒေဝလောက); must be taught as the singular dwelling-place of the one true God, not one plane among many in a cosmic hierarchy.
  • κρείττων (kreittōn) — “better, superior.” A key comparative word running through Hebrews (better covenant, better promises, better sacrifices, better country, better resurrection). Risk: Low-Medium — mainly rhetorical/structural; ensure consistent rendering across all “better ___” occurrences (1:4; 6:9; 7:7,19,22; 8:6; 9:23; 10:34; 11:16,35,40; 12:24).
  • θυσία (thysia) — “sacrifice, offering.” Semantic range: a cultic offering, animal or otherwise, presented to a deity. English variants: “sacrifice,” “offering.” Burmese rendering: ယဇ်ပူဇော်ခြင်း (yaz-pu-zaw-chin), noun form ယဇ် (yaz). Risk: Critical — the verb ပူဇော် (pu-zaw, “to offer/present reverently”) is the everyday Burmese word for offerings made to a Buddha image, a pagoda, or monks in exchange for merit (ဗုဒ္ဓပူဇော်ခြင်း, ရဟန်းပူဇော်ခြင်း). Every occurrence of “sacrifice/offer” in Hebrews must be accompanied by teaching that Christ’s ယဇ် is a substitutionary death that satisfies God’s justice once for all, not a merit-generating gift presented to gain religious favor or improve one’s karmic standing. This is one of the highest-density collision risks in the entire book, given how central and pervasive sacrificial vocabulary is to Hebrews 7-10.

Hebrews 9:24

  • ἀντίτυπος (antitypos) — “copy, antitype, corresponding representation.” Related to ὑπόδειγμα above. Risk: Medium (see typology note above).
  • ἀληθινός (alēthinos) — “true, real, genuine” (as opposed to merely apparent or symbolic). Burmese rendering: စစ်မှန်သော. Risk: Medium — must convey ontological reality (the heavenly sanctuary itself, not a copy of it), not merely “sincere” or “accurate.”
  • ἐμφανίζω (emphanizō) — “to make visible/manifest, to appear, to present oneself.” Risk: Medium — distinct from the ordinary word for “come/go”; conveys Christ’s active, personal appearing on believers’ behalf before God, functioning as an ongoing priestly presentation, not a one-time visit.
  • πρόσωπον θεοῦ (prosōpon theou) — “the face/presence of God.” Risk: Low-Medium.

Hebrews 9:25-26

  • πολλάκις (pollakis) — “often, many times.” Deliberately contrasted with ἅπαξ/ἐφάπαξ. Risk: Medium — the entire force of this verse depends on the “many times vs. one time” contrast being crisp in Burmese; ensure πολλάκις and ἅπαξ are never rendered with overlapping vocabulary.
  • καταβολή κόσμου (katabolē kosmou) — “foundation of the world.” Risk: Low.
  • συντέλεια τῶν αἰώνων (synteleia tōn aiōnōn) — “the end/consummation of the ages.” Risk: Medium — must be taught as a linear, historical climax (the incarnation as the hinge of history), never assimilated to the Buddhist cyclical cosmology of repeating world-ages (kappa) that expand and contract without end — the very collision the baseline flags for “fulfillment of prophecy.”
  • πεφανέρωται (pephanerōtai) — perfect of φανερόω, “has been manifested/revealed.” Risk: Low.
  • ἀθέτησις ἁμαρτίας (athetēsis hamartias) — “the putting away/annulment of sin.” ἀθέτησις = a setting-aside, nullifying, or cancelling. Risk: High — “sin” here (ἁμαρτία, REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: အပြစ်) must retain its full weight as moral guilt before God, and “put away” must convey a definitive, completed removal — not a temporary suppression or a merely psychological release from guilt-feeling.

Hebrews 9:27-28

  • ἀπόκειμαι (apokeimai) — “to be laid up, appointed, destined.” Risk: Low.
  • ἅπαξ ἀποθανεῖν (hapax apothanein) — “to die once.” Risk: Medium — reinforces the linear, non-repeating nature of human death, directly countering any samsaric-cycle framing of death and rebirth; pairs conceptually with the same word applied to Christ’s own death two clauses later, making the parallel between ordinary human mortality and Christ’s unique death crucial to preserve.
  • κρίσις (krisis) — “judgment.” Semantic range: a legal/moral verdict rendered by an authority. English variants: “judgment,” “verdict,” “condemnation” (context-dependent). Risk: High — must be taught as a single, personal, final verdict issued once by God after death, not a karmic accounting process that determines the next of countless rebirths; this term underlies the entire “Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages” doctrine elsewhere in Hebrews (e.g., 10:27; 12:23).
  • προσφέρω / ἀναφέρω (prospherō / anapherō) — “to offer / to bear, carry up.” Both verbs describe Christ’s self-offering and his bearing away of sin. Risk: High — same collision category as θυσία above (ပူဇော် / merit-offering); “bear the sins of many” (ἀναφέρω ἁμαρτίας) must be rendered as substitutionary sin-bearing, echoing Isaiah 53, not merely “removing” sin abstractly.
  • πολλῶν (pollōn) — “of many.” Risk: Medium — must retain the intentionally broad, though not necessarily universalist, scope; compare Romans’ baseline handling of universal_scope_of_gospel.
  • ἐκ δευτέρου (ek deuterou) — “a second time.” Burmese: ဒုတိယအကြိမ်. Risk: Low, but doctrinally significant — anchors the Second Coming (Christ’s future bodily return), a distinct event from his single atoning death, and must not be blurred with any notion of repeated incarnations.
  • χωρὶς ἁμαρτίας (chōris hamartias) — “apart from sin,” i.e., his second appearing is not again for sin-bearing. Risk: Medium.
  • ἀπεκδέχομαι (apekdechomai) — “to await eagerly, expectantly.” Risk: Medium — links directly to the doctrine “Perseverance and Assurance”; must convey confident, settled anticipation grounded in a finished work, not anxious uncertainty about one’s future religious status.
  • σωτηρία (sōtēria) — “salvation.” [REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ကယ်တင်ခြင်း]. Risk: Critical — same forbidden-substitution rule applies: NEVER Here salvation is specifically tied to Christ’s visible, bodily Second Coming to consummate what his first coming accomplished — a personal, relational, future-historical hope, not a self-attained cessation of craving.

PART B — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK

Chapter 1 — The Son Superior to the Prophets and Angels

  • υἱός (huios) — “Son.” Here used as a title (ὁ υἱός, “the Son”) distinct from but doctrinally identical to the fuller baseline phrase [son_of_god REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော်]. Contextual meaning: God’s final, superior self-revelation “in these last days… by his Son” (1:2), contrasted with the prophets’ partial revelations. Burmese shorthand rendering: သားတော် (tharadaw). Risk: Critical — same doctrine as sonship_of_christ/deity_of_christ; must never be softened to a merely honorific or adoptive title.
  • ἀπαύγασμα (apaugasma) — “radiance, effulgence, outshining.” Semantic range: light streaming forth from and identical in nature to its source (not a reflection). Burmese rendering: ဘုန်းတော်၏ရောင်ခြည် (using REUSED ROMANS TM glory term ဘုန်းတော် as base). Risk: Critical — must convey the Son as God’s own uncreated radiance, sharing one divine nature, not a lesser being illuminated by a greater one (as a deva might reflect the merit-glow of a Buddha).
  • χαρακτήρ (charaktēr) — “exact imprint, precise representation” (e.g., an image stamped by a die). Risk: Critical — same doctrine (deity_of_christ) as above; must convey exact ontological correspondence, not mere resemblance or moral exemplification.
  • ἄγγελος (angelos) — “messenger,” here specifically heavenly/angelic messengers. English variants: “angel,” “messenger.” Contextual meaning: created heavenly beings whom the Son is shown to be far superior to (foundational to the doctrine “Superiority of Christ over Angels”). Risk: High — must NEVER be rendered with နတ် (nat), the Burmese term for the worshipped/placated guardian and nature spirits of the 37-nat pantheon, nor collapsed into Buddhist cosmology’s deva realms (ဒေဝါ). Angels are created servants of the one true God who worship him and serve his people; they are neither objects of worship nor beings to be placated, unlike nats in Burmese folk practice.
Risk: High — reinforces the same angel/nat distinction; must be clear these are spirits who serve God on behalf of his people, not spirits who serve or are served by human ritual petitioners.
Risk: Low.
  • κληρονόμος (klēronomos) — “heir.” [Conceptually tied to REUSED adoption doctrine]. Burmese: အမွေခံ. Risk: Medium.
  • χρίω (chriō) — “to anoint” (1:9, quoting Ps. 45:7). Root of “Christ/Messiah.” [Tied to REUSED ROMANS TM messiah term: မေရှိယ]. Risk: High — must be understood as a unique, unrepeatable royal-priestly anointing of the Son by the Father, not a generic religious consecration ritual.

Chapter 2 — Warning, and Christ’s Solidarity with Humanity

  • σωτηρία (sōtēria) — “salvation.” [REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ကယ်တင်ခြင်း]. Contextual note: 2:3 introduces the first of Hebrews’ warning passages (“how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?”), anchoring the doctrine “The Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages” to salvation vocabulary from the outset. Risk: Critical (per baseline).
  • ἀρχηγός (archēgos) — “founder, pioneer, originator, leader who goes first.” Semantic range: one who both originates something and leads others into it by going first himself. English variants: “author,” “pioneer,” “founder,” “captain.” Contextual meaning (2:10; repeated 12:2): Christ as “the pioneer of their salvation,” made perfect through suffering, who blazes the trail his followers walk. Risk: Medium-High — must be distinguished from a mere teacher or guide; Christ does not simply point the way but personally goes first and secures the way through his own suffering and death.
  • τελειόω (teleioō) — “to perfect, complete, bring to maturity/fulfillment.” Semantic range: to bring something to its intended completeness or full effectiveness. English variants: “make perfect,” “complete,” “fulfill,” “mature.” Contextual meaning (2:10): “it was fitting that God… should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.” Risk: CRITICAL — this is the single highest-value collision term in Hebrews. Burmese Buddhist vocabulary has a deeply entrenched cognate concept, ပါရမီ (parami), “the ten perfections” a Bodhisatta cultivates through countless self-directed lifetimes of merit to attain Buddhahood. τελειόω/τέλειος in Hebrews must NEVER be rendered with ပါရမီ or any derivative. Hebrews’ “perfecting” is (a) accomplished FOR Christ by the Father through a single historical act of suffering, not self-cultivated by Christ across lifetimes, and (b) accomplished FOR believers by Christ’s completed work (10:14), not achieved by the believer’s own moral effort. This term recurs at 5:9; 6:1; 7:19,28; 9:9; 10:1,14; 11:40; 12:2,23 and must be flagged for mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
  • γεύομαι θανάτου (geuomai thanatou) — “to taste death” (2:9). Idiom for personally undergoing death. Risk: Low — idiom handling; render meaning plainly per the idiom-handling rule inherited from the baseline instruction set.
  • ἁγιάζων (hagiazōn) — present participle “the one sanctifying.” Contextual note (2:11): “he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source,” grounding the family/brotherhood language that follows. Risk: High (per baseline).
  • ἀδελφός (adelphos) — “brother.” Burmese: ညီအစ်ကို. Risk: Low, though theologically weighty as it grounds Christ’s willingness to call believers “brothers” (2:11-12).
  • διάβολος (diabolos) — “devil, slanderer.” Established Myanmar Christian rendering (already used in existing Myanmar Bible tradition): မာရ်နတ် (Mayanat). Risk: High — this term borrows the name Mara, the tempter-deity of Buddhist tradition who assailed the Buddha under the Bodhi tree to prevent his enlightenment, combined with နတ် (nat, spirit). While this borrowing usefully leverages an existing Burmese category of a personal spiritual adversary, translators and teachers must explicitly clarify that Hebrews’ devil is a real, personal, fallen created being who holds “the power of death” (2:14) and is decisively defeated by Christ’s death — not a mythological personification of craving/attachment within an individual’s own mind, as Mara functions in the Buddhist temptation narrative.
  • πειράζω (peirazō) — “to test, tempt, try.” Risk: Low-Medium.

Chapter 3 — Christ Greater than Moses; the Warning of Unbelief

  • ὁμολογία (homologia) — “confession.” Semantic range: a formal, public acknowledgment or profession, especially of faith. English variants: “confession,” “profession.” Contextual meaning (3:1): Jesus is “the apostle and high priest of our confession” — the one both sent by God and the object/content of believers’ public acknowledgment. Burmese rendering: ဝန်ခံချက် (wan-khan-chet). Risk: Medium — recurs at 4:14 and 10:23 (“hold fast our confession”) and must be rendered consistently; connects to the baseline’s apostle term (တမန်တော် REUSED FROM ROMANS TM) since Jesus is here uniquely called both apostle and high priest.
  • Μωϋσῆς (Mōusēs) — “Moses.” Burmese: မောရှေ. Risk: Medium (see 9:19 note above); doctrine: “Superiority of Christ over… Moses” requires care to honor Moses as a faithful, genuinely commissioned servant (3:5) while affirming Christ as builder/Son over the household Moses merely served within.
Risk: Low, though theologically significant as the corporate-identity image (God’s household) running through the chapter.
  • πιστός (pistos) — “faithful.” [Cognate of REUSED ROMANS TM faith term: ယုံကြည်ခြင်း]. Burmese: သစ္စာရှိသော. Risk: Medium.
  • σκληρύνω (sklērynō) — “to harden” (as in “harden your hearts,” 3:8,13,15, quoting Ps. 95). Risk: Medium — must convey a willful, culpable resistance to God’s voice, not mere emotional numbness.
  • παραπικρασμός (parapikrasmos) — “rebellion, provocation” (the noun form of the wilderness rebellion at Meribah). Risk: Medium.
  • ἀπιστία (apistia) — “unbelief.” [Negated form of REUSED faith term]. Risk: High — 3:12 warns of “an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God,” directly feeding the apostasy doctrine.
  • κατάπαυσις (katapausis) — “rest.” Semantic range: a state of settled cessation from labor/struggle, here God’s promised rest for his people (introduced at 3:11,18, developed fully in Ch. 4). English variants: “rest,” “resting place.” Risk: High — treated fully under Chapter 4 below; flagged here at its first occurrence because 3:11-19 already frames it as a forfeitable promise tied to persevering faith, not an automatically attained final state.

Chapter 4 — God’s Sabbath Rest, and the Living Word

  • κατάπαυσις / σαββατισμός (katapausis / sabbatismos) — “rest / Sabbath rest.” σαββατισμός (4:9) is a rare noun meaning specifically “Sabbath-keeping/Sabbath rest.” Contextual theological meaning: a promised, still-available share in God’s own rest, typified by the Sabbath and the Promised Land but pointing beyond both to final, eschatological rest with God. (Sabbath rest specifically). Risk: High — this concept sits dangerously close to နိဗ္ဗာန် (neikban/nirvana), the Buddhist goal of final release/extinguishing of craving and rebirth, which is likewise described as ultimate rest/peace. The baseline already forbids နိဗ္ဗာန်ရောက်ခြင်း for “salvation” for exactly this reason; the same forbidden-substitution discipline must extend to “rest” language in Hebrews 3-4. God’s rest must be taught as continued relational fellowship and enjoyment of God in his completed work (echoing his own rest after creation, 4:4), a positive personal communion — not a negative cessation of craving, consciousness, or existence.
  • λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ (logos tou theou) — “the word of God.” [Tied to REUSED ROMANS TM prophecy/inspiration_of_scripture doctrine]. Contextual meaning (4:12): God’s word as “living and active,” piercing to divide soul and spirit, discerning the heart’s thoughts. Risk: High (per baseline inspiration_of_scripture doctrine) — must be presented as the personal, living speech of a personal God, distinct from the Tipitaka’s authority resting on the Buddha’s own enlightened insight.
  • θρόνος τῆς χάριτος (thronos tēs charitos) — “throne of grace.” [χάρις REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ကျေးဇူးတော်]. Risk: Critical (per baseline grace doctrine) — 4:16’s invitation to “draw near with confidence to the throne of grace” must retain the full force of grace as unearned favor, not a place where merit is weighed or dispensed.
  • παρρησία (parrhēsia) — “boldness, confidence, freedom of speech.” Semantic range: the unhindered, open confidence of one with full standing to approach or speak, as opposed to timidity or the need for an intermediary’s permission. English variants: “boldness,” “confidence,” “openness.” Contextual meaning (4:16; recurring 10:19,35): believers may approach God directly and confidently through Christ. Risk: High — this is the linguistic anchor of the named doctrine “Access to God through Christ’s Blood.” Burmese folk-religious practice typically requires ritual intermediaries, correct merit-offerings, or auspicious timing/astrology to approach higher spiritual powers; παρρησία’s direct, unmediated, confident access — grounded entirely in Christ’s blood, requiring no further ritual qualification — is a sharp and important contrast that must not be diluted into mere politeness or general optimism.
  • προσέρχομαι (proserchomai) — “to draw near, approach.” Risk: High — same doctrine as παρρησία above; recurs at 7:25, 10:1, 10:22, 11:6, 12:18, 12:22.

Chapter 5 — Christ’s Qualification as High Priest; Spiritual Immaturity

  • ἀρχιερεύς (archiereus) — “high priest.” [Established above at 9:11]. Contextual development (5:1-10): the high priest’s qualifications (taken from among men, able to sympathize, appointed by God, not self-appointed) are shown fulfilled and surpassed in Christ. Risk: Critical (as above).
  • Μελχισέδεκ (Melchisedek) — “Melchizedek,” proper name (Gen. 14; Ps. 110). Transliterated form: မေလခိဇေဒက်. Contextual meaning: a mysterious priest-king of Salem who prefigures Christ’s unique priesthood, one that is not hereditary/Levitical. Risk: Medium — requires OT narrative background teaching (as with seed_of_david in the baseline); low direct lexical-collision risk but high unfamiliarity risk if introduced without context.
  • τάξις (taxis) — “order, rank, class” (as in “a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek,” 5:6; 7:11,17). Burmese: အစီအစဉ်/အနွယ်. Risk: Low-Medium.
  • μανθάνω ὑπακοήν (manthanō hypakoēn) — “learned obedience” (5:8, of Christ, “he learned obedience through what he suffered”). [ὑπακοή cognate to REUSED ROMANS TM obedience_of_faith term: နာခံမှု]. Risk: High — must not imply Christ was ever disobedient or morally imperfect prior; “learned” conveys experiential fullness of obedience through real suffering, not moral progress from a deficient state.
  • τέλειος / τελειόω (teleios/teleioō) — “perfect / to perfect.” [See full Critical-risk treatment under Ch. 2 above]. Contextual recurrence (5:9): “being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation.” Risk: Critical — reiterate the ပါရမီ (parami) forbidden-substitution warning at every occurrence.
  • γάλα / στερεὰ τροφή (gala / stereá trophē) — “milk / solid food,” a maturity metaphor (5:12-14). Risk: Low — natural idiom, translates cleanly.
  • στοιχεῖα (stoicheia) — “elementary things, basic principles” (5:12, “the basic principles of the oracles of God”). Risk: Low.

Chapter 6 — The Danger of Falling Away; the Anchor of Hope

  • παραπίπτω (parapiptō) — “to fall away, fall aside, apostatize.” Semantic range: to lapse or defect after having stood; a decisive falling away from a prior position rather than never having stood at all. English variants: “fall away,” “apostatize,” “commit apostasy.” Contextual meaning (6:6): describes those who, having tasted the blessings described in 6:4-5, “fall away” such that it is impossible to restore them again to repentance. Burmese rendering: ယုံကြည်ခြင်းမှ ကျရာက်ဖေါက်ပြန်ခြင်း (falling/defecting away from the faith). Risk: High — this term anchors the named doctrine “The Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages,” one of the most theologically contested passages in the epistle across the Christian tradition (questions of whether true believers can lose salvation). The Burmese rendering must preserve the full force of the warning without the translation itself resolving the underlying theological debate; flag for mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence, consistent with the baseline’s escalation rule for election/predestination-adjacent language.
  • φωτίζω / φωτισθέντας (phōtizō / phōtisthentas) — “to enlighten / having been enlightened” (6:4, “those who have once been enlightened”). Semantic range: to receive illuminating light/understanding, here of the gospel’s truth. English variants: “enlightened,” “illumined.” Burmese rendering: အလင်းရရှိသူများ (those who have received/obtained light). Risk: CRITICAL — a major, previously unflagged collision candidate for this curriculum: Burmese Buddhist vocabulary uses “enlightenment” (ဗောဓိဉာဏ်ရခြင်း, or the state of being ဗုဒ္ဓ/ရဟန္တာ) for the self-achieved awakening that ends the cycle of rebirth, the central religious goal of Theravada practice. Hebrews 6:4’s “enlightened” must NEVER be rendered with any term suggesting this achieved-awakening category (e.g., ဉာဏ်ရှင်ဖြစ်ခြင်း, ဗုဒ္ဓဇာတိရခြင်း). It refers instead to a received illumination — understanding graciously given by exposure to the gospel and the Spirit’s work — which, this passage warns, some subsequently and decisively reject. Flag for mandatory theologian review.
  • μέτοχος (metochos) — “partaker, sharer, companion.” [Recurs 3:1,14 “partakers/companions of Christ/a heavenly calling”]. Risk: Medium — must convey genuine, real participation/fellowship, without implying a partial or provisional share (contrast with the full-sonship point already established in the baseline’s adoption doctrine).
  • μετάνοια (metanoia) — “repentance.” Semantic range: a change of mind/heart resulting in a changed direction of life, specifically turning from sin toward God. English variants: “repentance,” “turning.” Established Myanmar Christian rendering: နောင်တရခြင်း (naung-ta-ya-chin). Risk: Medium — must be distinguished from generic regret or remorse (a passing emotional state) and from Buddhist frameworks of regret tied to reducing negative karmic consequence; biblical repentance is a decisive reorientation toward the living God in response to grace, not a self-managed technique for improving one’s future rebirth prospects.
  • ἐπαγγελία (epangelia) — “promise.” [See 9:15 note]. Recurs throughout Ch. 6 regarding God’s promise to Abraham (6:13-17). Risk: Medium.
  • ὅρκος (horkos) — “oath.” Burmese: ကျိန်ဆိုချက်. Risk: Low — the cultural practice of oath-swearing exists in Burmese custom, so the concept transfers with minimal risk; theological weight lies in God swearing by himself as the ultimate guarantee, which should be highlighted in teaching notes.
  • ἄγκυρα (ankyra) — “anchor” (6:19, “a hope… as an anchor for the soul”). Risk: Low — natural metaphor, translates directly.
Risk: Low-Medium — must be conveyed as confident expectation grounded in God’s character and oath, not wishful uncertainty.

Chapter 7 — The Priesthood of Melchizedek and Christ’s Permanent Priesthood

  • Μελχισέδεκ (Melchisedek) — [See Ch. 5]. Chapter 7 develops the type in full: king of righteousness (7:2, “Salem” = peace), without recorded genealogy, greater than Abraham (who paid him tithes). Risk: Medium, requiring sustained OT background teaching.
  • δεκάτη (dekatē) — “a tenth, tithe.” Risk: Low.
  • ἀπαράβατος (aparabatos) — “unchangeable, permanent, that does not pass to another” (7:24, of Christ’s priesthood). Risk: Medium-High — reinforces the “once for all” theme; must not be softened to “very durable” but conveyed as strictly non-transferable and permanent, unlike the Levitical priesthood which passed from father to son at death.
  • ἐντυγχάνω (entynchanō) — “to intercede, plead on behalf of.” [Cognate concept REUSED FROM ROMANS TM intercession: အသနားခံခြင်း]. Contextual meaning (7:25): Christ “always lives to make intercession” for his people. Risk: Medium — per baseline, must be distinguished from petitioning the 37 nats; here made more vivid since Christ’s intercession is continuous and grounded in his permanent priesthood.
  • ζωὴ ἀκατάλυτος (zōē akatalytos) — “indestructible life” (7:16). Risk: High — like αἰώνιος (eternal), this collides with the Buddhist doctrine of universal impermanence (အနိစ္စ, anicca), under which nothing conditioned endures; Christ’s indestructible life must be taught as a real, personal, unending life, not merely a very long-lasting phenomenon still subject to eventual dissolution.
  • ἀνώμοιος / ἄμωμος-adjacent holiness language (7:26) — “holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners.” [ἅγιος REUSED FROM ROMANS TM]. Risk: High (per baseline holy/sanctification doctrines).
  • τελείωσις (teleiōsis) — “perfecting, completion” (7:11, 19; noun form of τελειόω). Risk: Critical — same ပါရမီ warning as Ch. 2/5 above.

Chapter 8 — The New Covenant Announced

  • διαθήκη καινή / πρώτη (diathēkē kainē/prōtē) — “new covenant / first covenant.” [See full treatment at 9:15 above]. Chapter 8 quotes Jeremiah 31:31-34 in full, making this the doctrinal centerpiece for “The New Covenant versus the Old.” Risk: High, per above.
  • μεσίτης (mesitēs) — “mediator” (8:6). [See 9:15]. Risk: High.
  • παλαιόω (palaioō) — “to make/become old, obsolete” (8:13, “In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete”). Risk: Medium — must be taught carefully: the Old Covenant is not thereby declared to have been false or worthless, but fulfilled and superseded in God’s redemptive plan; overly blunt Burmese rendering (“useless,” “worthless”) risks implying the entire Old Testament was a mistake, which is not Hebrews’ claim.
  • λατρεία (latreia) — “service, worship” (cultic). [Cognate to λατρεύω, 9:14 above]. Risk: Medium.

Chapter 9 (verses 1-10) — The Earthly Sanctuary and Its Limits

(Note: Hebrews 9:11-28, the second half of this chapter, is the curriculum’s core passage and receives full verse-by-verse treatment in Part A above. This section covers the chapter’s remaining load-bearing terms found in 9:1-10.)

  • σκηνή (skēnē) — “tent, tabernacle.” [See 9:11 above]. 9:1-5 catalogues its furnishings: λυχνία (lampstand, ဆီမီးခုံ), τράπεζα (table, ပွဲစားစားပွဲ), ἡ πρόθεσις τῶν ἄρτων (bread of the Presence/showbread, ရှေ့တော်မွန့်), κιβωτός τῆς διαθήκης (ark of the covenant, ပဋိညာဉ်သေတ္တာ), χερουβίμ (cherubim, ခေရုဗိမ်), ἱλαστήριον (mercy seat/atonement cover — see below). Risk: Low overall — these are OT background/furniture terms requiring only informational teaching, not doctrinal-collision risk in themselves, though they set up the atonement vocabulary that follows.
  • ἱλαστήριον (hilastērion) — “mercy seat, place/means of atonement,” the gold cover of the ark where the high priest sprinkled blood on the Day of Atonement (also used of Christ in Rom. 3:25). Risk: High — this is the OT physical locus of propitiation and directly anticipates the “mercy seat” fulfilled once for all in Christ; must not be flattened into a generic piece of temple furniture but taught as the specific place where God’s wrath against sin and his mercy toward sinners met through blood.
  • λατρεία (latreia) — “acts of worship/service” performed by priests (9:6). Risk: Medium (see Ch. 8).
  • ἅπαξ τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ (hapax tou eniautou) — “once a year” (9:7, the high priest’s annual entry into the Most Holy Place). Note the deliberate contrast set up here with the ἐφάπαξ (“once for all time”) of 9:12 — a rhetorical pairing the translator must preserve distinctly: “once a year, repeatedly” vs. “once, for all time, never repeated.” Risk: Medium (translation-mechanics risk, similar to the διαθήκη wordplay at 9:16-17).
  • συνείδησις τελειῶσαι (syneidēsis teleiōsai) — “to perfect the conscience” (9:9, “gifts and sacrifices that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper”). [See conscience and τελειόω notes above]. Risk: Critical (τελειόω) combined with Medium (συνείδησις) — flag as a compound high-value term.
  • δικαιώματα σαρκός (dikaiōmata sarkos) — “regulations of the flesh/body” (9:10, referring to food, drink, washings — ceremonial regulations). Risk: Low-Medium — must be distinguished from the baseline’s REUSED “righteousness” term (ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း); this is external ceremonial regulation, explicitly said to be temporary “until the time of correction,” not the forensic righteousness by faith central to the gospel.

Chapter 10 — The Single Sufficient Sacrifice, and the Call to Persevere

  • θυσία / προσφέρω (thysia/prospherō) — “sacrifice / to offer.” [See 9:23 above; ပူဇော်ခြင်း collision risk]. 10:1-18 is the chapter’s doctrinal climax on the “Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice,” repeatedly contrasting the yearly-repeated Levitical sacrifices (“which can never… make perfect those who draw near,” 10:1) with Christ’s single offering (“by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified,” 10:14). Risk: Critical, compounding θυσία + τελειόω + ἁγιάζω in a single verse (10:14) — flag as a maximum-density theological verse requiring theologian review.
  • σκιά (skia) — “shadow” (10:1, “the law… has but a shadow of the good things to come”). Burmese rendering: အရိပ်. Risk: Medium — natural word for “shadow” exists, but the typological point (a shadow points to, and is cast by, a substantial reality yet to come) needs explanatory teaching, since Burmese religious thought does not use shadow/substance imagery this way.
  • σῶμα (sōma) — “body” (10:5, quoting Ps. 40, “a body you have prepared for me”). [Related to REUSED incarnation doctrine: လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း]. Risk: Critical — anchors Christ’s genuine physical incarnation as the means of his sacrifice; must never be rendered in a way suggesting a merely apparent or spirit-manifested body.
  • θέλημα θεοῦ (thelēma theou) — “the will of God” (10:7,9-10, “by that will we have been sanctified”). Risk: Medium.
  • ἁγιάζω / ἡγιασμένοι (hagiazō/hēgiasmenoi) — “to sanctify / those who are sanctified.” Risk: High (per baseline) — 10:10,14,29 make sanctification explicitly the fruit of Christ’s single offering, not an ongoing self-directed purification project.
  • καταπέτασμα (katapetasma) — “curtain, veil” (10:20, the temple veil, torn at Christ’s death, cf. Matt. 27:51, now understood typologically as Christ’s own flesh/body opening access). Burmese rendering: ကန့်လန့်ကာ. Risk: Medium — requires the OT temple-veil background to land with force; without that context the “new and living way” (ὁδὸς πρόσφατος καὶ ζῶσα) it opens loses its rhetorical power.
  • πληροφορία πίστεως (plērophoria pisteōs) — “full assurance of faith” (10:22). [πίστις REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ယုံကြည်ခြင်း]. Risk: High — directly serves the doctrine “Perseverance and Assurance”; must be conveyed as settled confidence resting on Christ’s finished work and blood, not confidence built through personally verified religious experience (the note the baseline already sounds regarding သဒ္ဓါ/saddha).
  • ῥαντίζω καρδίας (rhantizō kardias) — “hearts sprinkled clean” (10:22). [See 9:13-14]. Risk: Medium.
  • ὁμολογία (homologia) — “confession.” [See Ch. 3]. Recurs 10:23, “let us hold fast the confession of our hope.” Risk: Medium.
  • παρρησία (parrhēsia) — “confidence, boldness.” [See Ch. 4]. Recurs 10:19,35. Risk: High.
  • ἑκουσίως ἁμαρτάνω (hekousiōs hamartanō) — “to sin deliberately/willfully” (10:26). Risk: High — this specific phrase anchors the sharpest warning passage in the chapter (10:26-31) and must retain full seriousness without the translation itself pronouncing a verdict on whether the person in view is a true or false believer, per the baseline’s escalation rule for such passages.
  • ἐκδίκησις (ekdikēsis) — “vengeance, retribution” (10:30, quoting Deut. 32:35). Risk: Medium — must convey God’s own righteous, personal judicial action, not an impersonal karmic backlash.
Risk: Medium — key vocabulary for “Perseverance and Assurance”; must convey active, faith-fueled steadfastness under trial rather than passive resignation.
  • μισθαποδοσία (misthapodosia) — “reward, recompense” (10:35). Burmese: အကျိုးဆုလာဘ်. Risk: Medium — must be taught as a gracious reward flowing from God’s own promise to those who persevere by faith, not a merit-payment earned in a transactional sense that would undercut grace.

Chapter 11 — The Faith of the Old Testament Saints

  • πίστις (pistis) — “faith.” [REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ယုံကြည်ခြင်း]. Contextual meaning (11:1): “Now faith is the assurance/substance of things hoped for, the conviction/evidence of things not seen” — Hebrews’ own definitional statement, foundational to the doctrine “Faith of the Old Testament Saints.” Risk: Medium, per baseline, but elevated here because this single verse functions as the epistle’s programmatic definition and will be quoted repeatedly in teaching.
  • ὑπόστασις (hypostasis) — “substance, reality, underlying essence; also ‘confidence, assurance.’” Semantic range: the concrete reality/ground underlying something, or (in a related sense) firm confidence. English variants: “substance,” “assurance,” “reality,” “confidence.” Contextual meaning (11:1): faith gives present, real ground/substance to future, hoped-for realities. Burmese rendering: ခိုင်မာသောယုံကြည်ချက် (firm assurance) or တည်ကြည်မှု (settled ground/reality). Risk: High — must be conveyed as objective confidence grounded in God’s character and promise (a reality one stands on), not subjective wishing or the accumulation of confirming religious experience over time (the risk the baseline already flags regarding သဒ္ဓါ/saddha).
  • ἔλεγχος (elenchos) — “proof, conviction, evidence” (11:1, “the conviction of things not seen”). Risk: Medium.
  • μαρτυρέω (martyreō) — “to bear witness, be commended, be attested” (used repeatedly of the OT saints, e.g., 11:2,4,5,39). Risk: Low.
  • εὐαρεστέω (euaresteō) — “to please, be well-pleasing to” (11:5-6, of Enoch, “without faith it is impossible to please God”). Risk: Medium — must be conveyed relationally (pleasing a personal God who is pleased or displeased) rather than as an abstract standard of moral quality met.
  • ξένοι καὶ παρεπίδημοι (xenoi kai parepidēmoi) — “strangers and exiles/sojourners” (11:13, of the patriarchs). Risk: Low-Medium — a resonant, natural metaphor for temporary residence; theologically points to an ultimate heavenly homeland rather than any this-worldly kingdom, so must not be flattened into merely literal travel.
  • πατρίς / πόλις (patris/polis) — “homeland / city,” here the “heavenly” homeland/city the patriarchs sought (11:14,16). [Conceptually parallel to REUSED ROMANS TM kingdom_of_god]. Risk: Medium.
  • ὀνειδισμὸς τοῦ Χριστοῦ (oneidismos tou Christou) — “the reproach of Christ” (11:26, of Moses). Risk: Medium — anticipates 13:13’s call to “bear the reproach he endured,” and connects to the socially costly nature of gospel allegiance in a Buddhist-majority context, echoing the baseline’s evangelism doctrine note on real social/family cost of conversion.
  • κρείττων ἀνάστασις (kreittōn anastasis) — “better resurrection” (11:35). [ἀνάστασις REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ထမြောက်ခြင်း]. Risk: Critical, per baseline resurrection doctrine — must never drift toward ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း (rebirth); the martyrs described here who were killed rather than accept release anticipated a bodily, once-for-all resurrection, precisely NOT another turn of a repeating cycle.

Chapter 12 — The Race of Faith, Fatherly Discipline, and Mount Zion

  • νέφος μαρτύρων (nephos martyrōn) — “cloud of witnesses” (12:1). Risk: Low.
  • ἀρχηγὸς καὶ τελειωτής (archēgos kai teleiōtēs) — “founder/pioneer and perfecter” (12:2, of Jesus in relation to faith). [See ἀρχηγός Ch. 2, τελειόω Ch. 2/5]. Risk: Critical — the τελειωτής half of this title compounds the ပါရမီ collision risk directly onto Christ’s own titles; flag for theologian review every time this verse is used, as it is likely to become a frequently quoted verse in the curriculum.
  • παιδεία (paideia) — “discipline, training, upbringing” (12:5-11, quoting Prov. 3:11-12). Semantic range: the formative, often corrective, instruction a father gives a son, aimed at maturity rather than mere punishment. English variants: “discipline,” “chastening,” “training.” Burmese rendering: ဆုံးမခြင်း (hson-hma-chin). Risk: Medium — fits naturally with existing Burmese family/parental-correction vocabulary and connects well to the REUSED adoption/sonship doctrine (သားအဖြစ်လက်ခံခြင်း), but must be taught as evidence of genuine fatherly love and secured sonship, not evidence of provisional or probationary standing that could be lost through failure.
  • Σιὼν ὄρος / Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἐπουράνιος (Siōn oros / Ierousalēm epouranios) — “Mount Zion / the heavenly Jerusalem” (12:22), contrasted with Mount Sinai (12:18-21). Risk: Medium — requires sustained OT background teaching (paralleling the baseline’s treatment of “seed of David”/Davidic covenant, since there is no comparable typological city-symbolism in Burmese religious tradition).
  • ἐκκλησία πρωτοτόκων (ekklēsia prōtotokōn) — “assembly of the firstborn” (12:23). [ἐκκλησία REUSED FROM ROMANS TM church: အသင်းတော်]. πρωτότοκος = “firstborn,” carrying full inheritance-right connotations (cf. REUSED adoption doctrine). Risk: Medium-High.
  • κριτὴς πάντων (kritēs pantōn) — “judge of all” (12:23). [Cognate to κρίσις, 9:27]. Risk: High.
  • πνεύματα δικαίων τετελειωμένων (pneumata dikaiōn teteleiōmenōn) — “spirits of the righteous made perfect” (12:23). [δίκαιος cognate to REUSED righteousness: ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း; τελειόω — see Ch. 2 Critical warning]. Risk: Critical (compound term).
  • αἵματος ῥαντισμοῦ (haimatos rhantismou) — “sprinkled blood” (12:24, “the blood of Jesus… that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel”). Risk: High, per blood/sacrifice notes above.
  • βασιλεία ἀσάλευτος (basileia asaleutos) — “a kingdom that cannot be shaken” (12:28). Risk: Medium (per baseline).
  • πῦρ καταναλίσκον (pyr katanaliskon) — “consuming fire” (12:29, quoting Deut. 4:24). Risk: Low-Medium — conveys God’s holy, purifying judgment; must not be softened into a merely metaphorical warmth image.
Risk: Low-Medium — must convey reverent awe before a holy, personal God, distinguishable from generic superstitious fear of impersonal spiritual forces.

Chapter 13 — Concluding Exhortations

Risk: Low.
  • φιλοξενία (philoxenia) — “hospitality, love of strangers” (13:2). Risk: Low.
  • φιλαργυρία (philargyria) — “love of money” (13:5). Risk: Low.
  • ἡγούμενοι (hēgoumenoi) — “leaders” (13:7,17,24, of church leaders). [Cognate to REUSED church doctrine: အသင်းတော်]. Risk: Low-Medium.
Risk: Medium — in context, likely a warning against reversion to Jewish ceremonial food-regulation teaching, but in the Burmese context this vocabulary should also be understood as guarding against syncretistic blending with folk-Buddhist ritual practice, without the translation itself inserting an anachronistic anti-Buddhist polemic not present in the original text.
  • θυσιαστήριον (thysiastērion) — “altar.” [Cognate to θυσία, see above]. Burmese: ယဇ်ပလ္လင်. Risk: Medium (per θυσία collision category above), specifically 13:10, “we have an altar” — a spiritual/typological claim requiring careful unpacking rather than a literal physical-altar reading.
  • παρεμβολή (parembolē) — “camp” (13:11,13, “outside the camp,” echoing the sin offering burned outside Israel’s camp, and Jesus’ crucifixion “outside the gate”). Burmese: တပ်စခန်း. Risk: Low-Medium — background/typological term.
  • ὄνειδος αὐτοῦ φέρειν (oneidos autou pherein) — “to bear his reproach” (13:13). [See 11:26 above]. Risk: Medium.
  • θυσία αἰνέσεως (thysia aineseōs) — “sacrifice of praise” (13:15). [θυσία — see collision category above]. Risk: Medium — a positive, non-atoning repurposing of sacrificial vocabulary (verbal praise/thanksgiving offered continually) that must be clearly distinguished from Christ’s unique atoning ယဇ် so that believers do not conclude they must now offer their own atoning sacrifices of a different kind; this is worship-response, not atonement.
  • εὐποιία / κοινωνία (eupoiia/koinōnia) — “doing good / sharing, fellowship” (13:16). [κοινωνία REUSED FROM ROMANS TM fellowship: မိတ်သဟာယ]. Risk: Low, per baseline.
  • πείθεσθε τοῖς ἡγουμένοις (peithesthe tois hēgoumenois) — “obey your leaders” (13:17). Risk: Low-Medium.
  • ποιμὴν τῶν προβάτων ὁ μέγας (poimēn tōn probatōn ho megas) — “the great shepherd of the sheep” (13:20). Risk: Low — a well-established, culturally accessible pastoral image already used throughout Myanmar Christian tradition (cf. Ps. 23; John 10).
  • αἷμα διαθήκης αἰωνίου (haima diathēkēs aiōniou) — “blood of the eternal covenant” (13:20). [Compound of all major terms above: blood, covenant, eternal]. Risk: High — a fitting capstone term for the whole epistle’s argument; should be rendered with full consistency to every prior occurrence of its component parts.
  • χάρις (charis) — “grace” (13:9,25, the letter’s closing word). [REUSED FROM ROMANS TM: ကျေးဇူးတော်]. Risk: Critical, per baseline — Hebrews both opens (implicitly, via the entire argument) and closes on grace as the ground of the readers’ whole standing before God.

Summary Observation

Hebrews’ single greatest translation-risk term, appearing with the highest frequency and doctrinal density of any new (non-Romans-TM) vocabulary item in the book, is τελειόω/τέλειος/τελειωτής/τελείωσις (“to perfect / perfect / perfecter / perfection”), owing to its direct collision with the Buddhist doctrine of ပါရမီ (parami), the ten self-cultivated perfections of a Bodhisatta across countless lifetimes. This is a doctrine risk of equal severity to grace’s collision with ကုသိုလ် (merit) in Romans, and should be treated with the same Critical-tier discipline throughout Phase 2. A close second is rest/κατάπαυσις and enlightened/φωτίζω, both of which collide with core Buddhist soteriological vocabulary (nirvana/neikban and bodhi-enlightenment respectively) in ways not previously encountered in the Romans curriculum.
