Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — Ephesians (English → Burmese) Language Package

Why it matters

Ephesians pushes the Burmese Language Package well beyond the Romans baseline. The core passage (2:1–10) puts grace-versus-works — the single sharpest collision point with Myanmar’s daily Buddhist merit-making practice — at the doctrinal center of an entire curriculum, while chapters 1, 3, and 6 add dense new vocabulary for predestination, union with Christ, the church’s cosmic identity, and spiritual warfare that sits directly on top of Burma’s populated nat-spirit, astrology, and weizza folk-religious landscape. Get this package right, and Myanmar believers gain precise, syncretism-resistant language for grace, identity in Christ, and spiritual protection. Get it wrong, and the same vocabulary can be quietly re-absorbed into merit-accounting, karmic fatalism, or amulet-style protection — the very frameworks Ephesians was written to displace.

Key findings

  • Full-book coverage confirmed. All six chapters were analyzed; every chapter contributes at least one Critical- or High-tier doctrine (see analysis/11_doctrine_analysis.md). No chapter was silently skipped.
  • 103 total glossary terms now govern Ephesians Phase 2 translation: 33 inherited verbatim from the Romans baseline (assets/translation_memory.json Section A) and 70 newly introduced by this letter (Section B), consistent with assets/bible_term_registry.json and analysis/08_core_glossary.md.
  • 18 Critical-tier terms require human theologian review at every single occurrence — 9 inherited from Romans (grace, righteousness, salvation, resurrection, son_of_god, jesus, god, holy_spirit, father) and 9 new to Ephesians (christ, predestined, children_of_wrath, made_alive_with_christ, raised_and_seated_with_christ, works_excluded, good_works_as_fruit, grieve_the_holy_spirit, rulers_authorities_cosmic_powers_spiritual_forces_of_evil).
  • ~49 High-tier terms require theologian review, spanning ecclesiology (body/head/fullness/temple), unity doctrine (one new man/dividing wall/reconciliation), household codes, and the armor of God’s individual pieces.
  • Doctrine-level risk (assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json): of 29 doctrines mapped to the curriculum, 9 are Critical and 16 are High — together 25 of 29 doctrines require mandatory human theologian review; only 3 route to native-speaker review and 1 to automated review alone.
  • Two brand-new mandatory translator notes, absent from every existing Burmese Bible edition surveyed, are now required curriculum-wide: (1) distinguishing Eph 2:9’s excluded “works” from 2:10’s fruit “good works” (identical Burmese phrase, opposite argument), and (2) disambiguating the human “master” sense of κύριος (6:5-9) from the divine Lord used everywhere else in the letter.

Risks

  • Grace/works collapse (Critical): Ephesians 2:8–10 uses the identical Burmese phrase ကောင်းမှုအကျင့် for “works” excluded as salvation’s cause (v.9) and “good works” affirmed as its fruit (v.10) two verses later — the single highest-probability misreading in the curriculum, given this is the exact vocabulary of daily lay merit-making (ကုသိုလ်ပြုခြင်း).
  • Spiritual warfare syncretism (Critical): Eph 1:21, 3:10, and 6:12’s “rulers, authorities, cosmic powers, spiritual forces of evil” sit atop Myanmar’s dense populated spirit-world (37 nats, territorial guardians, astrology, weizza occult adepts) — the highest syncretism-reinterpretation risk in the package.
  • Predestination-as-karma (Critical): ကြိုတင်ခန့်ထားတော်မူသော (predestined, Eph 1:5,11) is a coined term specifically built to avoid collapsing into ကံဇာတာ/ကံကြမ္မာ (karma-fixed destiny), but requires sustained reinforcement or it will default to the culturally dominant fatalistic reading.
  • Spirit-personhood erosion (Critical): Eph 4:30 (“grieve the Holy Spirit”) is the decisive text requiring the Spirit’s full relational personhood — directly opposed by Theravada anatta’s denial of any permanent self or spirit-entity.
  • Sealed/armor-as-amulet drift (High): “Sealed with the Spirit” and “whole armor of God” occupy the exact functional category of Burmese protective tattoos, amulets, and charms (in-saq/ban); unfenced teaching risks functional (not just doctrinal) syncretism.
  • Headship isolation (High): Wife-submission/husband-headship language (5:22-24) is at high risk of being cited apart from its controlling frame (5:21 mutual submission; 5:25 self-sacrificial love), especially given existing patriarchal cultural norms.
  • Cult/sect contamination (all tiers): Jehovah’s Witnesses’ impersonal-Spirit and subordinationist-Christology renderings, prosperity-gospel/weizza-inflected “power” and “armor” vocabulary, and named-nat glosses for spiritual powers are documented as circulating in Myanmar and must trigger automatic escalation if detected in back-translation.

Opportunities

  • Two never-before-attempted translator notes (grace/works pivot; κύριος disambiguation) let this curriculum outperform every existing Burmese Bible edition surveyed on the letter’s two hardest ambiguities.
  • Six reusable standing fencing-note templates (agapē, sealed/armor, spiritual powers, mystery, Mara, predestination) turn recurring high-risk terms into a consistent, efficient review workflow rather than ad hoc per-verse deliberation.
  • A single settled rendering for “mystery” (လျှို့ဝှက်ချက်တော်) resolves a live inconsistency across current Myanmar Bible editions, strengthening this curriculum’s internal coherence across its five occurrences (1:9; 3:3-9; 5:32; 6:19).
  • The unity-of-Jews-and-Gentiles doctrine (2:11-22) offers a uniquely direct, pastorally significant application to Myanmar’s own Bamar-majority/ethnic-minority church dynamics, if taught with care.
  1. Load assets/translation_memory.json (103 terms) and assets/bible_term_registry.json before any Phase 2 segment translation; treat all Section A (inherited) terms as immutable.
  2. Implement the mandatory grace/works paired note and κύριος disambiguation note as required, non-skippable fields in the Phase 2 segment cache for every qualifying passage (2:8-10; 6:5-9).
  3. Prioritize theologian review for the 18 Critical-tier terms and 9 Critical-tier doctrines before batch-processing chapters 2, 4, and 6, per the ranked ambiguity list in analysis/06_linguistic_gap_analysis.md §5.
  4. Build the six standing fencing-note templates into Phase 2 tooling as reusable snippets rather than freshly authored per occurrence.
  5. Escalate to human theologian review any back-translation matching the cult/sect risk patterns documented in analysis/05_translation_landscape.md §4, regardless of assigned risk tier.
  6. Carry forward YouVersion version ID 179 (Judson Bible, Burmese) and book code EPH as the fixed citation reference for all Ephesians hyperlinks, reconfirming the numeric ID against the live catalog at Phase 2 tooling setup.
