Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — Revelation Translation Requirements (Burmese)

Why it matters

Revelation is the highest doctrinal-risk book this pipeline has processed for Burmese. Its core passage (21:1-8) sits at the exact convergence point of the book’s most syncretism-prone doctrines — the New Heaven and New Earth, judgment, grace-as-free-gift, and assurance of final victory — in a language whose dominant religious tradition, Theravada Buddhism, supplies competing frames for nearly every major term: cyclical cosmology instead of final re-creation, karma instead of personal judgment, self-attained liberation instead of grace, and a generic veneration verb that flattens the book’s central claim of the Lamb’s exclusive deity. Getting this book right in Burmese is not a vocabulary exercise; it is theological risk management at scale.

Key findings

  • 22 of 26 Revelation-specific doctrines (85%) require mandatory human theologian review — 11 Critical-tier and 11 High-tier — far exceeding the Romans baseline’s proportion. Only 3 doctrines route to native-speaker review and just 1 (Thanksgiving and Praise) is automated-only.
  • 17 Critical-tier and 33 High-tier new terms were introduced by Revelation’s distinct vocabulary (Lamb, Beast, Dragon, Satan, Worship, Idolater, Lake of Fire, Second Death, New Jerusalem, and more), on top of ~37 terms inherited unchanged from the Romans baseline.
  • Six severe syncretism collision points dominate the risk profile: (1) worship of the Lamb vs. the generic veneration verb ကိုးကွယ်ခြင်း; (2) the dragon (နဂါး) vs. Burmese Buddhism’s benevolent naga-guardian tradition; (3) Satan (မာရ်နတ်) vs. Māra, the tempter the Buddha overcame by self-effort; (4) idolatry language vs. the centrality of Buddha-image veneration; (5) lake of fire/second death vs. ငရဲ, one of 31 temporary, escapable samsaric rebirth-realms; (6) “new” heaven and earth vs. cyclical kappa world-ages.
  • The core passage alone (21:1-8) carries at least five Critical-tier terms (new creation, new Jerusalem, tabernacle/dwell, freely-gift/water of life, and the overcomer’s granted inheritance) plus a vice-list requiring careful faith/works distinction — making it the single highest-density passage in the curriculum for mandatory review.
  • A newly identified risk — the Min-Laung/Setkya Min millenarian tradition — creates a ready-made but false interpretive frame for Christ’s return that was not present in the Romans baseline and must be added to theologian briefing materials.

Risks

  • Doctrine-collapsing mistranslation risk is highest at: worship-verb misuse (could reduce the Lamb’s deity to one venerated figure among many), dragon/naga conflation (could invert the moral valence of Revelation 12’s central antagonist), and lake-of-fire/ငရဲ conflation (could convert eternal judgment into a temporary, escapable rebirth-stage).
  • Pastoral-sensitivity risk: idolatry and image-of-the-beast language, if delivered without strict historical-apocalyptic framing, risks landing as an unqualified attack on ordinary Burmese Buddhist devotional life rather than the text’s actual target (compelled emperor/beast-cult worship).
  • Cult-adjacent reference contamination risk: the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Burmese New World Translation contains six specific doctrinally-deviant renderings (notably at Revelation 3:14, denying Christ’s eternal deity) that could be inadvertently echoed by translators consulting online reference material.
  • Interpretive overreach risk: informal preaching traditions circulating in Myanmar have been observed softening eternal judgment duration, fixing “Babylon” to specific modern political entities, and reframing the core passage’s “no more death/mourning/pain” promise as a present-tense prosperity guarantee — all of which must be explicitly excluded from Phase 2 output and teaching notes.

Opportunities

  • The Romans baseline’s grace-vs-merit framework transfers directly and powerfully into Revelation’s “freely gift” (δωρεάν) and water-of-life language (21:6; 22:17), giving this curriculum a ready-made, already-validated doctrinal anchor rather than requiring new groundwork.
  • Burmese already has an established, theologically sound rendering pathway for Christ’s deity (Word of God, Son of Man, shared throne of God and the Lamb) inherited from Johannine tradition, reducing coinage risk for this curriculum’s central Christological claims.
  • The high concentration of mandatory theologian review, while resource-intensive, creates an opportunity to produce an unusually well-vetted reference translation for the six highest-risk collision points, which could become a model resource for other apocalyptic-literature translation work in Burmese.
  1. Load assets/translation_memory.json (Revelation) alongside the Romans baseline TM before any Phase 2 segment work — do not process any Revelation segment against the Romans TM alone.
  2. Prioritize theologian scheduling for chapters 12, 13, 17, 19, 20, 21, and 22 in Phase 2 Step 17, given their concentrated Critical-tier doctrinal load.
  3. Enforce mandatory theologian review, with no exceptions, on every segment touching Revelation 21:1-8, regardless of which individual term triggers the flag — the core passage’s Critical-tier density means no sub-segment should be treated as routine.
  4. Screen all Phase 2 output against the six cult/informal-tradition deviations cataloged in analysis/05_translation_landscape.md §4 before publication, especially the Revelation 3:14 deity-of-Christ crux.
  5. Attach the mandatory contrastive translator notes (dragon/naga, Satan/Māra, lake-of-fire/ငရဲ, idolater/Buddha-image, new-creation/kappa, tribulation/dukkha, return-of-Christ/Metteyya-and-min-laung, souls/anatta) at every qualifying occurrence — treat these as required fields in the Phase 2 segment cache, not optional annotations.
  6. Re-verify the YouVersion Judson Bible Version ID (179, JUD) against the live catalog before generating the first batch of published hyperlinks.
