Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — 1 John (Full Book) — English → Burmese

Methodology

This analysis follows the PRD Phase 1 Step 1 mandate: the ENTIRE book of 1 John is surveyed, chapter 1 through chapter 5, with the core passage (1 John 4:7-21) receiving verse-by-verse treatment of every load-bearing theological term. Every other chapter receives chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing terms with identical fields. Where a term already appears in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json, the recorded Burmese rendering is reused exactly and marked [BASELINE REUSE]. Where 1 John introduces a term not present in the Romans baseline, a new rendering is proposed here, consistent with the baseline’s methodology (established Myanmar Christian usage preferred over Pali-heavy coinage; explicit flagging of collision with Buddhist doctrinal vocabulary).

For every load-bearing term the following fields are given: Original word, Transliteration, Literal meaning, Semantic range, English variants (as it may appear across English translations), Contextual theological meaning (as used in 1 John), and Burmese rendering & risk.

PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse Analysis: 1 John 4:7-21

1 John 4:7

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
ἀγαπητοίagapētoi”beloved ones”term of pastoral affection, vocative pluralbeloved; dear friends; dear onesJohn’s pastoral address to the church family, grounding the command to love in relationship, not obligationချစ်လှစွာသောသူတို့ (chit-hla-swa-thaw-thu-to). Risk: Low. Standard warm address; no collision.
ἀγαπῶμεν (< ἀγαπάω)agapōmen”let us love” (hortatory subjunctive)volitional, active love commanded of the communitylet us love; we should loveThe command flows from what God has already done, not a duty performed to earn standingချစ်ကြကုန်အံ့ / ချစ်ကြစို့ (chit-kya-lo). See ἀγάπη below for risk.
ἡ ἀγάπηhē agapē”love” (the noun, article + noun = “love itself/as such”)God’s own self-giving, sacrificial, relational love; distinguished in NT usage from ἔρως (desire) and φιλία (affection/friendship)love; charity (older versions)The defining attribute and activity of God, revealed supremely in sending the Son to die (v.10); the source and standard of all human love for one anotherချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ (chit-chin metta). Risk: CRITICAL. ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ is the established Myanmar Bible compound, but မေတ္တာ (Pali mettā) is also the first of the four brahmavihāra — a meditatively cultivated, universally-extended benevolence generated by the practitioner’s own mental discipline, without reference to a personal source or a sacrificial act. 1 John’s ἀγάπη is God’s own eternal nature (v.8), poured out through a specific historical act (the sending and death of the Son, v.9-10) and given to believers relationally, not a mental state self-produced through meditation. Every occurrence in this curriculum requires teaching notes distinguishing “God’s own being and initiating act” from “cultivated equanimity toward all beings.” This is the single highest-stakes lexical decision in the entire curriculum, structurally parallel to the baseline’s treatment of ကျေးဇူးတော် (grace) against ကုသိုလ် (merit).
γεγέννηται (< γεννάω)gegennētai”has been begotten/born” (perfect passive)a completed past act of God with continuing present result; new spiritual birthis born; has been bornNew birth as God’s own begetting act, producing a permanent, present-tense filial relationship — the “new birth” evidenced by the capacity to loveဘုရားသခင်ထံမှ ဖွားမြင်ခြင်း ခံရသော (Phayarthakhin htan-hma pwarmyin-chin khan-yathaw). Risk: CRITICAL. English “born of God” invites exactly the rebirth vocabulary the Romans baseline explicitly forbids for “resurrection” (ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း, ပြန်လည်မွေးဖွားခြင်း — rebirth into a new existence within samsara). These same forbidden terms must never be used here. New birth is a single, once-for-all, permanent begetting by a personal God into his own family, not a rebirth within an ongoing cycle determined by karma.
γινώσκει (< γινώσκω)ginōskei”knows”relational, experiential knowledge (contrast οἶδα, factual knowledge, though the two overlap in Johannine usage)knows; has come to knowSaving knowledge of God is relational and evidenced by love, not merely intellectual assent or ritual observanceသိတော်မူသည် / သိသည် (thi-thaw-mu-thi / thi-thi). Risk: Medium. Must convey ongoing relational acquaintance with a personal God, not mere doctrinal information or the meditative “insight-knowledge” (ဉာဏ်) sought in vipassana practice.

1 John 4:8

“Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
ἔγνω (< γινώσκω)egnō”knew” (aorist)as above, aorist emphasizing the fact rather than the processhas not known; does not knowFailure to love is diagnostic evidence of never having entered saving relational knowledge of Godမသိသည် (ma-thi-thi). Risk: Medium, see γινώσκω above.
ὁ θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίνho theos agapē estin”God is love”predicate nominative identifying God’s essential nature, not merely one of his activitiesGod is loveThe foundational identity statement of the letter (repeated 4:16): love is not incidental to God but constitutive of who he isဘုရားသခင်သည် ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ ဖြစ်တော်မူ၏ (Phayarthakhin-thi chit-chin-metta phyit-taw-mu-i). Risk: CRITICAL. This is the single most theologically load-bearing sentence in the curriculum. It must be taught as an ontological claim about the one personal Creator (ဘုရားသခင် — see baseline note on ဘုရားသခင် vs. ဘုရား), not as a description compatible with an impersonal universal principle of loving-kindness that any being might likewise embody or cultivate.

1 John 4:9

“In this the love of God was manifested among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
ἐφανερώθη (< φανερόω)ephanerōthē”was made manifest/revealed” (aorist passive)to disclose openly what was previously hidden; historical, visible revelationwas manifested; was revealed; was shownGod’s love is not abstract but historically, visibly enacted in the incarnation and mission of the Sonထင်ရှားစေတော်မူသည် (htin-shar-say-taw-mu-thi). Risk: Medium. Must convey a one-time historical self-disclosure of a personal God, not a periodic manifestation/avatar-descent pattern.
τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν μονογενῆton huion autou ton monogenē”his only-begotten/unique Son”μονογενῆς = one-of-a-kind, unique, without peer — not merely “firstborn among many”his only Son; his one and only Son; his only-begotten SonChrist’s eternal, unrepeatable, unique Sonship — reinforcing the baseline’s Sonship of Christ doctrineဘုရားသခင်၏ တစ်ပါးတည်းသောသားတော် (Phayarthakhin i tabartetha thar-daw). Uses [BASELINE REUSE] သားတော် (son_of_god root, ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော်) with the qualifier တစ်ပါးတည်းသော (unique/only). Risk: Critical, inherited from baseline sonship_of_christ doctrine — must not be read as one divine son among many nats or Brahma-realm beings.
ἀπέσταλκεν (< ἀποστέλλω)apestalken”has sent” (perfect)commissioned sending with abiding significancesent; has sentThe Father’s initiating, purposeful sending of the Son — grounds the Incarnation doctrineစေလွှတ်တော်မူ၏ (say-hlwat-taw-mu-i). Risk: High. Connects directly to baseline’s Critical incarnation term လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း — the sending resulted in the Son permanently taking human nature once, not a temporary spirit-descent (နတ်ဆင်းသက်ခြင်း, explicitly forbidden in baseline).
εἰς τὸν κόσμονeis ton kosmon”into the world”κόσμος — see full treatment under Chapter 2 belowinto the worldThe arena of human history and moral order into which the Son enteredလောကသို့ (lawka-tho). Risk: High, see κόσμος entry, Chapter 2.
ζήσωμεν (< ζάω)zēsōmen”we might live” (aorist subjunctive)to have life, in the fullest Johannine sense — see ζωὴ αἰώνιος, Chapter 5might live; would live; could have lifeThe purpose of the sending: not moral improvement but the impartation of life itselfအသက်ရှင်ကြစိမ့်သောငှာ (a-thet-shin-kya-seint-thaw-hnga). Risk: High, tied to ζωὴ αἰώνιος (eternal life), see Chapter 5.

1 John 4:10

“In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
ἠγαπήκαμεν / ἠγάπησεν (< ἀγαπάω)ēgapēkamen / ēgapēsen”we have loved” / “he loved”see ἀγάπη abovewe loved / he lovedContrast structure: love originates with God, not with human initiative — directly against any merit-based approach to Godချစ်ခြင်း (verb forms of ချစ်). Risk: Critical, see ἀγάπη above.
ἱλασμόνhilasmon”propitiation, means of atonement/appeasement”a sacrifice that satisfies divine justice and turns away wrath, provided by the offended party himselfpropitiation; atoning sacrifice; sacrifice of atonementChrist’s death satisfies God’s own righteous judgment against sin, at God’s own initiative — this is the mechanism by which love and justice meetအပြစ်ဖြေရာယဇ် (a-pyit-hpye-yar-yat, lit. “sin-atoning sacrifice”). Risk: CRITICAL. Must be taught as God himself providing the sacrifice that satisfies his own justice — the reverse direction of Burmese folk-religious practice, in which a human offerer presents a sacrifice (often food, animals, or objects) to a nat or spirit in order to appease it or avert its anger. Never render with vocabulary suggesting a human-initiated appeasement offering. Also connects to baseline’s escalation rule flagging “atonement/propitiation language” for mandatory theologian review.
περὶ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶνperi tōn hamartiōn hēmōn”concerning/for our sins”ἁμαρτία — [BASELINE REUSE] အပြစ်for our sins; concerning our sinsThe specific object of the atoning sacrifice: actual moral guilt before a personal Godကျွန်ုပ်တို့၏ အပြစ်များအတွက် (kyunote-to i a-pyit-myar a-twet). Risk: High (baseline sin entry), reused exactly.

1 John 4:11

“Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
ὀφείλομεν (< ὀφείλω)opheilomen”we owe, are obligated, ought”moral debt/obligation language, not optional suggestionought; must; are boundHuman love for one another is a response-obligation flowing from having received God’s love, not a means of generating merit toward Godတာဝန်ရှိကြ၏ / ဆောင်ရွက်သင့်ကြ၏ (tawun-shi-kya-i). Risk: Medium. Must be taught as gratitude-driven responsive obligation, not a moral-debt system analogous to karmic debt repayment.

1 John 4:12

“No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
τεθέαται (< θεάομαι)tetheatai”has seen, has beheld” (perfect)visual perception, often of something remarkablehas seen; has beheldGod’s invisibility to unaided human sight — love for the brethren is the visible proof/manifestation of the invisible God’s presenceမြင်ဖူးသည် (myin-bu-thi). Risk: Low-Medium.
μένει (< μένω)menei”abides, remains, dwells”continuing, settled presence/relationship; a Johannine signature verb (occurs ~24x in 1 John)abides; remains; lives in; dwellsMutual, continuing indwelling relationship between God and the believer — the theological center of Johannine spiritualityတည်နေတော်မူသည် (tanei-taw-mu-thi). Risk: High. This verb must be carefully distinguished from the language of meditative absorption (“abiding in the jhānas/samādhi states”) used in Buddhist meditation instruction, where “abiding” describes a self-attained, temporary mental state reached through disciplined practice. Biblical “abiding” is a continuing relational union with a personal God/Christ, initiated and sustained by God through the indwelling Spirit (cf. 1 John 3:24, 4:13), not a self-produced contemplative state.
τετελειωμένη (< τελειόω)teteleiōmenē”has been perfected/brought to completion” (perfect passive)to bring to its intended full maturity or goalis perfected; is made complete; reaches full expressionGod’s love reaches its intended, full outworking specifically in and through the loving community, not in isolated private pietyပြည့်စုံ၍ တည်ရှိသည် (pyi-sone-yway ta-shi-thi). Risk: Medium. Not “perfection” as flawless performance, but love reaching its intended completeness/goal.

1 John 4:13

“By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
μένομεν / μένειmenomen / meneisee 4:12see aboveabide; remainMutual indwelling as grounds of assuranceတည်နေခြင်း. Risk: High, see above.
τοῦ πνεύματος αὐτοῦtou pneumatos autou”of his Spirit”πνεῦμα generic here refers contextually to the Holy Spirit, the third Person given to believersof his Spirit; his SpiritThe indwelling Holy Spirit as the evidentiary basis and means of the mutual abiding just describedကိုယ်တော်၏ ဝိညာဉ်တော် (koh-taw i weinnyin-taw). Risk: CRITICAL — inherited directly from baseline holy_spirit entry. Although the Greek here uses πνεῦμα without the adjective ἅγιος, the referent is unambiguously the Holy Spirit; render as သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော် or the abbreviated ကိုယ်တော်၏ဝိညာဉ်တော် with clear antecedent, never ဝိညာဉ် alone or နတ်ဝိညာဉ် (spirit/nat), consistent with the baseline’s absolute prohibition.
δέδωκεν (< δίδωμι)dedōken”has given” (perfect)a completed gift with abiding effecthas given; gaveThe Spirit is God’s gift, not a power attained through discipline or meritပေးတော်မူသည် (pay-taw-mu-thi). Risk: Medium.

1 John 4:14

“And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
τεθεάμεθαtetheametha”we have seen/beheld”see θεάομαι abovehave seen; have beheldApostolic eyewitness testimony, anchoring the letter’s anti-docetic argument (cf. 1:1)မြင်ခဲ့ကြ၍ (myin-khae-kya-ywe). Risk: Medium, ties to humanity_of_christ baseline doctrine.
μαρτυροῦμεν (< μαρτυρέω)martyroumen”we testify, bear witness”formal, legal/authoritative declaration of what one has personally seen or knowstestify; bear witness; declareApostolic testimony has the weight of eyewitness legal witness, not secondhand rumor or private religious opinionသက်သေခံကြ၏ (thet-thei-khan-kya-i). Risk: Medium, see μαρτυρία, Chapter 5.
σωτῆρα τοῦ κόσμουsōtēra tou kosmou”Savior of the world”σωτήρ = deliverer/rescuer; here of the whole κόσμος (all humanity, not a select ethnic or spiritual elite)Savior of the world; the world’s SaviorChrist’s saving mission is universal in scope, not limited to Israel or to an enlightened fewလောကီသားများကို ကယ်တင်တော်မူသော အရှင် (lawki-thar-myar-go kaetin-taw-mu-thaw a-shin), built on [BASELINE REUSE] ကယ်တင်ခြင်း (salvation). Risk: Critical, inherited from baseline salvation entry — the Savior rescues by another’s finished sacrificial work; never conflate with self-attained liberation from craving/rebirth (နိဗ္ဗာန်ရောက်ခြင်း, forbidden).

1 John 4:15

“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
ὁμολογήσῃ (< ὁμολογέω)homologēsē”confesses, acknowledges publicly, agrees with”to say the same thing as another/to affirm openly, often in a public, testimonial senseconfesses; acknowledges; affirmsPublic, doctrinally-precise affirmation of Christ’s identity — the boundary marker distinguishing true faith from the false teaching addressed throughout the letter (cf. 2:22-23, 4:2-3)ဝန်ခံသည် (wan-khan-thi). Risk: High. Distinguish from a private, internally-held sentiment; ὁμολογέω requires an outward, specific, doctrinally content-bearing declaration. Also distinguish from monastic/Vinaya-style peer confession of infractions (a purity-maintenance ritual among the sangha) — here the confession is a doctrinal affirmation about who Jesus is, addressed in the context of the gathered believing community.
Ἰησοῦς…ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦIēsous…ho huios tou theou”Jesus…the Son of God”see son_of_god, Sonship of Christ (baseline)Jesus is the Son of GodThe core Christological confession that the false teachers (and the spirit of antichrist, 4:3) denyယေရှုသည် ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော် ဖြစ်တော်မူ၏ (Yayshu-thi Phayarthakhin i tharadaw phyit-taw-mu-i). Uses [BASELINE REUSE] ယေရှု, ဘုရားသခင်, ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော် exactly. Risk: Critical, inherited from baseline.

1 John 4:16

“So we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
ἐγνώκαμεν / πεπιστεύκαμενegnōkamen / pepisteukamen”we have known” / “we have believed” (perfects)knowledge and faith paired as complementary, both with abiding present effecthave known and believed; know and believeFaith (πίστις — [BASELINE REUSE] ယုံကြည်ခြင်း) here has love itself as its object of trust — not a set of propositions alone, but confidence in God’s loving disposition toward the believerယုံကြည်သိရှိကြပြီ (yun-kyi thi-shi-kya-pi). Risk: Medium, tied to baseline faith entry — object of faith must remain God’s own love/character, not a generic devotional confidence.
ὁ θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίν (repeated)see 4:8Repetition underlines this as the letter’s central thesis statementSee 4:8 above. Risk: Critical.
μένων ἐν τῇ ἀγάπῃmenōn en tē agapē”abiding in love”see μένω aboveabides in love; lives in love; remains in loveTo abide “in love” is to remain within the sphere of God’s own self-giving nature, and thereby to remain in relational union with God himselfမေတ္တာ၌ တည်နေသူ (metta-hnaik ta-nei-thu). Risk: Critical, compounding both μένω (High) and ἀγάπη (Critical) risks.

1 John 4:17

“By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
τετελείωται (< τελειόω)teteleiōtaisee 4:12is perfected; is made completeLove’s completion produces confident assurance, not anxious uncertaintyပြည့်စုံသည် (pyi-sone-thi). Risk: Medium.
παρρησίαν (< παρρησία)parrēsian”boldness, confidence, freedom of speech”originally civic/public speech-freedom; in NT usage, confident, unashamed access/standing before Godconfidence; boldness; assuranceAssurance before God’s judgment grounded in Christ’s finished work and God’s love, not in an uncertain running moral tallyရဲရင့်စွာချဉ်းကပ်နိုင်သော စိတ်ချမှု (yayin-swa-chin-kap-nain-thaw seik-cha-hmu). Risk: High, connects directly to baseline doctrine assurance_of_salvation — assurance must rest on God’s unchanging character and Christ’s work, never on a merit-tally analogous to a karma ledger determining one’s future state.
κρίσεως (< κρίσις)kriseōs”judgment”a legal decision/verdict, here the final divine judgmentjudgment; the day of judgmentFinal divine reckoning, before which believers may stand with confidence, not dreadတရားစီရင်ခြင်း (tayar-si-yin-chin). Risk: Medium. Distinguish final divine judgment by a personal God from a self-executing impersonal karmic mechanism.
ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ τούτῳen tō kosmō toutō”in this world”see κόσμος belowin this worldThe believer’s present location and mission field, in which Christ’s own character is to be reflectedဤလောက၌ (thi lawka-hnaik). Risk: High, see κόσμος, Chapter 2.

1 John 4:18

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
φόβοςphobos”fear, dread”can be reverent awe (positive, elsewhere) or here specifically dread of punishmentfear; dread; terrorServile fear of condemnation, incompatible with the settled security of a completed love-relationship with Godကြောက်ရွံ့ခြင်း (kyauk-ywae-chin). Risk: Medium. Must be distinguished from the reverent “fear of the Lord” (a positive category elsewhere in Scripture) — here specifically dread of judgment/punishment that mature love displaces.
τελεία ἀγάπηteleia agapē”perfect/complete love”τέλειος = brought to its intended maturity/completeness, not flawlessness in a moralistic senseperfect love; mature love; complete loveLove that has reached its intended maturity displaces servile dreadပြည့်စုံသော ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ (pyi-sone-thaw chit-chin-metta). Risk: Critical, compounding τέλειος (Medium) and ἀγάπη (Critical).
ἔξω βάλλει (< βάλλω)exō ballei”casts/throws outside”vivid, forceful expulsioncasts out; drives outMature love actively and decisively expels dread; assurance is not a passive absence of fear but an active victory of love over itပြင်သို့ နှင်ထုတ်တော်မူသည် (pyin-tho hnin-htote-taw-mu-thi). Risk: Low-Medium.
κόλασιν (< κόλασις)kolasin”punishment, torment”judicial penaltypunishment; tormentThe specific dread in view is dread of judicial punishment for sinပြစ်ဒဏ် (pyit-dan). Risk: Medium. Distinguish divine judicial penalty from karmic retribution accruing automatically and impersonally across future rebirths.

1 John 4:19

“We love because he first loved us.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
πρῶτοςprōtos”first”temporal/causal priorityfirst; first lovedGod’s love is unconditionally prior to and the sole cause of any human love for him — decisively excludes any works-first or merit-first frameworkရှေးဦးစွာ (shay-u-swa). Risk: Critical by association — this single word carries the entire weight of the grace-versus-merit distinction the baseline flags for ကျေးဇူးတော် (grace): God’s love-initiative precedes and is not a response to human devotion or merit-accumulation.

1 John 4:20

“If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
μισῇ (< μισέω)misē”hates”active hostility or, in Johannine binary usage, simply the absence of lovehatesLove for God and hostility/indifference toward a brother are mutually exclusive — no third neutral categoryမုန်းတီးသည် (moun-ti-thi). Risk: Low-Medium.
ψεύστηςpseustēs”liar”one who speaks falsehood; in Johannine usage often paired with denying a truth-claim about Christ or about oneselfliarStrong, unambiguous moral verdict: professed love for God without love for the brother is not a lesser spiritual state but an outright falsehoodလိမ်လည်သူ / မုသာသုံးသူ (leikelan-thu / mutha-thun-thu). Risk: Low.
τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦton adelphon autou”his brother”fellow believer, member of the spiritual family in Christ — the letter’s central ethical category (see Chapter 2 below for full treatment: “love for the brethren”)his brother; his brother or sisterThe tangible, visible proving-ground of love for the invisible God is love for fellow believers, without exceptionညီအစ်ကို (nyi-a-hko). Risk: Medium, see full treatment under Chapter 2 (love for the brethren doctrine).
ἑώρακεν (< ὁράω)heōraken”has seen” (perfect)direct visual perceptionhas seenContrast between the visible fellow-believer and the invisible God — love for the former is the only accessible proof of love for the latterမြင်ဖူးသော (myin-bu-thaw). Risk: Low.

τὴν ἐντολὴνtēn entolēn”the commandment”a specific, authoritative directive from a superior; distinct from νόμος (the Mosaic Law as a whole legal-covenantal system — [BASELINE REUSE] ပညတ်တရား)commandment; commandLove for the brethren is not optional aspiration but Christ’s direct command, received “from him” — grounded in relationship with Christ, not in an abstract moral code kept to accumulate standingပညတ်တော် (pyinnat-taw). Risk: Medium. Shares the root ပညတ် with baseline’s ပညတ်တရား (law) for consistency, but must be taught as a specific relational precept flowing from love and received from Christ personally — not a precept observed as merit-building religious discipline (သီလ, explicitly rejected elsewhere in the baseline for the same reason).

PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book

Chapter 1 (1 John 1:1–10)

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
Word of Lifeὁ λόγος τῆς ζωῆςho logos tēs zōēs”the word/message of life”λόγος: a spoken/written message, or (Johannine) the eternal divine Logos personified in Christ; ζωή: life, here the divine life Christ both possesses and impartsthe Word of life; that which concerns the Word of lifeChrist himself, and the apostolic message about him, presented as historically encountered — an anti-docetic opening emphasizing real, physical, historical contact with the incarnate Sonအသက်တော်၏ နှုတ်ကပါဌ်တော် (a-thet-taw i nhoke-ka-pat-taw). Risk: High. Must be taught as the person of Christ himself (cf. John 1:1, 14), not a philosophical “logos” principle or an abstract teaching detached from a real historical person.
eyewitness verbsἀκηκόαμεν, ἑωράκαμεν, ἐθεασάμεθα, ἐψηλάφησανakēkoamen, heōrakamen, etheasametha, epsēlaphēsan”we have heard,” “we have seen,” “we have looked upon,” “[our hands] have touched/handled”escalating verbs of direct, physical, sensory encounterwe have heard…seen…looked upon…touchedDeliberate piling-up of sensory verbs to insist on the full physical reality of the incarnate Christ, against any teaching that his humanity was illusory or merely apparentကြားသိရသည်၊ မြင်ရသည်၊ ကြည့်ရှုခဲ့သည်၊ လက်နှင့် စမ်းသပ်ခဲ့သည် (kya-thi-yathi, myin-yathi, kyi-shu-khae-thi, let-hnin-san-that-khae-thi). Risk: High. Directly reinforces baseline’s humanity_of_christ and incarnation doctrines — Christ’s physical body was fully real and tangible, not an illusory manifestation (a pattern found in some Burmese folk-narratives of spirit-manifested or miraculous births).
φανερόωephanerōthēephanerōthē”was manifested”see 4:9 abovewas manifested; appearedThe eternal life was historically, visibly disclosedထင်ရှားစေတော်မူသည်. Risk: Medium, see above.
κοινωνίαkoinōniakoinōnia”fellowship, shared participation”[BASELINE REUSE] မိတ်သဟာယfellowship; communion; partnershipShared participation both with the apostles and, through them, with the Father and the Son (1:3) — the letter’s second core doctrine (Fellowship with God and One Another)မိတ်သဟာယ (meikthahaya). Risk: Low per baseline, but doctrinally central here — must be taught as participatory union with God himself, not mere social camaraderie within a religious association.
χαράcharachara”joy”gladness, delightjoy; that our joy may be completeThe purpose of apostolic proclamation is shared, complete joy grounded in fellowship with Godဝမ်းမြောက်ခြင်း (wun-myauk-chin). Risk: Low.
φῶςphōsphōs”light”in Johannine usage, God’s own moral perfection, purity, truth, and self-revealing nature (contrasted with σκοτία)light; God is light”God is light” (1:5) — parallel and complementary thesis statement to “God is love” (4:8) — asserts God’s utter moral purity and self-disclosing truthfulnessအလင်းတော် (a-lin-taw). Risk: High. Must not be conflated with the Buddhist concept of ပညာအလင်းရောင် (the “light of wisdom/insight” attained by a practitioner through meditation) — God’s light is his own eternal, self-existing moral nature and self-revelation, not an attainment reached through disciplined practice.
σκοτίαskotiaskotia”darkness”moral corruption, alienation from God, falsehooddarknessThe sphere of sin, deception, and separation from God that light exposes and dispelsမှောင်မိုက် (hmaung-maik). Risk: Medium.
ἁμαρτίαhamartiahamartia”sin”[BASELINE REUSE] အပြစ်sinMoral guilt before a personal, holy God, from which cleansing is neededအပြစ် (a-pyit). Risk: High per baseline.
αἷμαhaimahaima”blood”the shed blood of Christ, signifying his sacrificial, atoning deathblood; the blood of JesusChrist’s own sacrificial death is the sole ground of cleansing from sinအသွေးတော် (a-thway-taw). Risk: Medium. Must not be associated with folk-religious animal-blood offerings made to appease nats; this is Christ’s own voluntary, once-for-all sacrificial blood.
καθαρίζωkatharizōkatharizō”to cleanse, purify”moral/forensic cleansing from the defilement of sincleanse; purifyGod’s own act of cleansing believers who confess their sin, based on Christ’s bloodသန့်ရှင်းစေခြင်း (thangyin-cae-chin), built on [BASELINE REUSE] root သန့်ရှင်း (holy). Risk: High. Must not be rendered with vocabulary for ritual/ceremonial washing (e.g., at pagodas or shrines, or purification rites before merit-making acts); this is God’s own moral-forensic cleansing accomplished through Christ’s blood, appropriated by confession, not achieved through repeated ritual washing.
ὁμολογέωhomologeōhomologeō”to confess, acknowledge”see 4:15 aboveconfessTo agree with God’s own verdict about one’s sin, as the condition for cleansing and forgiveness (1:9) — a foundational statement for the doctrine “Confession and Forgiveness of Sin”ဝန်ခံခြင်း (wan-khan-chin). Risk: High.
ἀφίημι / ἄφεσιςaphiēmi / aphesisaphiēmi / aphesis”to send away, forgive” / “forgiveness”judicial pardon, the removal of guiltforgive; forgivenessGod’s judicial pardon of confessed sin, grounded in Christ’s atoning blood, not in the gradual depletion of accumulated demerit through good worksခွင့်လွှတ်ခြင်း (khwin-hlwat-chin). Risk: High. Must be distinguished from the working-off of အကုသိုလ် (demerit) through compensating good deeds; forgiveness here is an immediate, complete judicial pardon granted by a personal God on the basis of Christ’s finished sacrifice, not a gradual karmic rebalancing.
δίκαιος / ἀδικίαdikaios / adikiadikaios / adikia”righteous, just” / “unrighteousness”[BASELINE REUSE] root ဖြောင့်မတ် (righteousness)just; righteous / unrighteousnessGod’s own faithful, righteous character guarantees that he will forgive and cleanse those who confess (1:9)ဖြောင့်မတ်သော / မဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း (pyaungmat-thaw / ma-pyaungmat-chin). Risk: Critical per baseline righteousness entry.

Chapter 2 (1 John 2:1–29)

παράκλητοςparaklētosparaklētos”advocate, one called alongside to help”a legal defense-advocate/intercessor; in John’s Gospel used of the Holy Spirit, here (2:1) used of the risen Christ before the Fatheradvocate; comforter; helperChrist’s ongoing heavenly intercession on behalf of believers who sin — distinct from, though related to, the baseline’s “intercession” entry (which concerns prayer offered by believers/the Spirit)ခုခံချေပပေးသူ / ကြားဝင်အသနားခံသူ (khu-khan-chay-pay-thu). Risk: High. Must convey a specific legal-defense function exercised by Christ himself before the Father on the believer’s behalf, distinct from generic prayer, and never rendered so as to suggest petitioning one intermediary among many (as in appeals to the 37 nats or other spirit-intercessors in folk practice).
ἱλασμόςhilasmoshilasmos”propitiation”see 4:10 abovepropitiation; atoning sacrificeFirst occurrence in the letter (2:2) of the atonement term fully treated at 4:10အပြစ်ဖြေရာယဇ်. Risk: Critical, see 4:10.
ἐντολήentolēentolē”commandment”see 4:21 abovecommandmentThe “old” (already-known, 2:7) and “new” (2:8, reinterpreted in light of Christ) commandment to love the brethrenပညတ်တော်. Risk: Medium, see 4:21.
μένωmenōmenō”abide”see 4:12-13 aboveabide; remainRepeated throughout ch. 2 (vv.6, 10, 14, 17, 19, 24, 27, 28) as the letter’s central relational-continuance verb: abiding in Christ, in the light, in the truth, in the anointingတည်နေခြင်း. Risk: High, see 4:12.
κόσμοςkosmoskosmos”world, world-order”(1) the created physical order (rarely in this sense in 1 John); (2) — dominant sense — humanity organized in opposition to God, the value-system and desires hostile to the Fatherthe world; worldly2:15-17: the object believers must not love, defined by “the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the pride of life” — a moral-spiritual order, not the physical earth itselfလောက (lawka). Risk: High. လောက is the standard Pali-derived Burmese word for “world,” but in Theravada cosmology it also denotes tiered cosmological realms (kāma-loka, rūpa-loka, arūpa-loka) structured by karma and rebirth. 1 John’s κόσμος is not a cosmological tier but a moral-spiritual order of values and desires opposed to God, which passes away (2:17) — this distinction must be explicitly taught, especially since 2:15-17 could otherwise be read as endorsing a karma-driven renunciation-of-desire framework rather than reordering desire toward God through new birth.
ἐπιθυμία τῆς σαρκός / τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν; ἀλαζονεία τοῦ βίουepithymia tēs sarkos / tōn ophthalmōn; alazoneia tou biouepithymia…; alazoneia…“desire of the flesh” / “desire of the eyes”; “pride/boastful arrogance of life”disordered cravings and self-exalting pride characteristic of worldly lifelust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of lifeThe threefold anatomy of worldliness that believers are commanded to reject in favor of doing the will of Godဇာတိပကတိ၏ တပ်မက်ခြင်း၊ မျက်စိ၏ တပ်မက်ခြင်း၊ လောကီအသက်တာ၏ ဝါကြွားခြင်း. Risk: Medium. Superficially similar to Buddhist taṇhā (craving) as the root of suffering, but the resolution differs: 1 John’s answer is not the extinguishing of desire through the Eightfold Path but the reordering of desire through new birth and abiding in God’s will, which alone endures forever (2:17).
ἀντίχριστοςantichristosantichristos”antichrist, one against/instead of Christ”one who opposes and/or seeks to replace the true Christ; specifically, in 1 John, one who denies that Jesus is the Christ come in the fleshantichristBoth a future eschatological figure and a present reality (“many antichrists,” 2:18) — the false teachers denying the incarnation and Messiahship of Jesus. Central to the doctrine “The Incarnation and Antichrist”အန္တီခရစ် (Antikhrit — transliteration). Risk: CRITICAL. Directly tied to baseline’s Critical doctrines messianic_promise and incarnation. Must be taught precisely as denial of Jesus’s specific identity as the incarnate Messiah/Son of God, not confused with any figure from Burmese folk-eschatology or with the future Buddha Metteyya (မိတ္တေယျ — explicitly forbidden term elsewhere in baseline for “messiah”); the antichrist is defined purely by relation to and negation of the biblical Christ.
χρίσμαchrismachrisma”anointing”the act or substance of anointing; by extension, the endowment/consecration it confersanointingThe Holy Spirit’s abiding, teaching presence given to all believers (not an elite class), enabling them to discern truth from the antichrists’ falsehoodဘိသိက်တော် (bhaitheik-taw). Risk: Medium-High. ဘိသိက် carries positive Myanmar cultural resonance (royal/priestly consecration) but risks being understood as a single ceremonial rite reserved for religious specialists (clergy, monks) rather than the universal indwelling of the Spirit given to every believer, requiring clarifying teaching.
ψεύστης / ἀρνέομαιpseustēs / arneomaipseustēs / arneomai”liar” / “to deny”see 4:20 above; ἀρνέομαι: to disown, repudiateliar; deniesThe one who denies that Jesus is the Christ is not merely mistaken but a liar and antichrist (2:22)လိမ်လည်သူ / ငြင်းဆိုသည်. Risk: High in this context (tied to Christological denial), though the words themselves are Low risk lexically.
δικαιοσύνηdikaiosynēdikaiosynē”righteousness”[BASELINE REUSE] ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်းrighteousnessPracticing righteousness (2:29) as evidence of having been born of Godဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း. Risk: Critical per baseline.
γεννάω (ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ)gennaōgennaō”to beget, to be born”see 4:7 aboveborn of him; born of GodFirst occurrence (2:29) of the letter’s recurring new-birth evidentiary formula, developed fully in Chapter 3ဘုရားသခင်ထံမှ ဖွားမြင်ခြင်း. Risk: CRITICAL, see 4:7 above.

Chapter 3 (1 John 3:1–24)

τέκνα θεοῦtekna theoutekna theou”children of God”τέκνον emphasizes organic, birth-based relationship (from τίκτω, to bear/give birth), distinct from υἱός (son, emphasizing legal standing/heirship — cf. baseline’s son_of_god and adoption entries)children of God; God’s childrenBelievers’ identity as those organically begotten by God (3:1-2, 10) — the ground of assurance and of family love for fellow believersဘုရားသခင်၏ သားသမီးများ (Phayarthakhin i tharthami-myar). Risk: High. Must be carefully distinguished from Christ’s own unique, eternal Sonship (ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော် — [BASELINE REUSE], singular, never pluralized or confused with believers’ status), and must not be read as a status attained through the believer’s own religious achievement — it results solely from God’s own begetting act (see γεννάω).
ἐλπίςelpiselpis”hope”confident expectation of a certain future good, grounded in God’s promise, not mere wishful optimismhopeHope of future Christlikeness (“we shall be like him,” 3:2) motivates present purificationမျှော်လင့်ခြင်း (hnyaw-lin-chin). Risk: Medium. Must convey confident expectation grounded in God’s own certain promise, not an uncertain wish or a Buddhist aspiration toward a favorable future rebirth.
ἁγνίζωhagnizōhagnizō”to purify oneself”ritual or moral self-purification; here moral, in light of hopepurifies himselfPresent-tense moral purification motivated by the hope of future Christlikeness, not fear-driven ritual observanceမိမိကိုယ်ကို သန့်စင်စေသည် (mimi-koh-koh thangzin-cae-thi). Risk: Medium. Care needed not to suggest self-attained ritual purity comparable to monastic precept-observance; this purification flows from hope and relationship, and is empowered by the indwelling Spirit and new birth, not self-generated discipline alone.
ἀνομίαanomiaanomia”lawlessness, being without law”rebellion against God’s revealed will, defined here (3:4) as the essence of sinlawlessnessSin is defined relationally, as rebellion against a personal God’s revealed will, not merely as a violation of impersonal cosmic orderပညတ်တော်ကို ဖီဆန်ခြင်း (pyinnat-taw-go phi-hsan-chin), built on [BASELINE REUSE] root ပညတ် (law/commandment). Risk: Medium.
διάβολοςdiabolosdiabolos”devil, slanderer”the personal, fallen spiritual being who is the ultimate source of sin (3:8, 10)devil; the devilThe devil, not God, is the originator of sin from the beginning; Christ’s mission includes destroying the devil’s worksမာရ်နတ် (Mardnat). Risk: High. The established Myanmar Christian term. Must be distinguished from the generic, morally ambiguous nats of Burmese folk religion (who may be propitiated, negotiated with, or even venerated for favor) — the devil is a specific, wholly malevolent, personal being permanently opposed to God, never an object of appeasement or negotiation.
σπέρμα (αὐτοῦ)sperma (autou)sperma (autou)“seed”God’s own generative, life-giving nature/principle abiding in the believer (3:9), parallel to γεννάωhis seed; God’s seedThe abiding, generative presence of God’s own nature in the one born of him, producing an inability to continue in habitual sin as a lifestyleဘုရားသခင်၏ မျိုးစေ့တော် (Phayarthakhin i myothayzdaw). Risk: Medium. Distinguish carefully from the Buddhist concept of kamma-bīja (“karma-seeds”) that ripen into future results through the seed-sower’s own past actions — this is God’s own life implanted by his gracious act, not a seed the believer planted through merit.
Κάϊν / ἌβελKain / HabelKain / Habelproper namesCain and Abel (Genesis 4)Cain; AbelHistorical negative example: hatred of one’s brother, rooted in the “evil one,” as the opposite of the love that evidences new birthကာဣန် / အာဗေလ (Kain / Abel — established Myanmar Bible proper-name forms). Risk: Low. Requires OT narrative background teaching for first-generation believers with low OT literacy.
θάνατος / ζωήthanatos / zōēthanatos / zōē”death” / “life”spiritual death (alienation from God) versus spiritual life (new birth, fellowship with God); not merely biologicaldeath / life”We have passed out of death into life” (3:14) evidenced by love for the brethren — a present, decisive, once-for-all transitionသေခြင်း / အသက်ရှင်ခြင်း (thei-chin / a-thet-shin-chin). Risk: Medium. Must convey a decisive, once-for-all spiritual transition already accomplished, not a gradual improvement across successive rebirths.
τίθημι τὴν ψυχήνtithēmi tēn psychēntithēmi tēn psychēn”to lay down [one’s] life/soul”to voluntarily give up one’s life for anotherlaid down his lifeChrist’s voluntary, substitutionary death as the pattern and standard for sacrificial love for the brethrenအသက်ကို စွန့်တော်မူခြင်း (a-thet-go swun-taw-mu-chin). Risk: Medium, ties to atonement/incarnation doctrines.
σπλάγχναsplagchnasplagchnalit. “inward parts, bowels”; figuratively “compassion, tender mercy”deep, gut-level compassioncompassion; bowels of mercy; pityPractical compassion toward a brother in need as the necessary expression of genuine love (3:17), not mere verbal professionသနားညှာတာသောစိတ် (thanar-nyartar-thaw seik). Risk: Low.
παρρησίαparrēsiaparrēsia”confidence, boldness”see 4:17 aboveconfidenceConfidence before God in prayer, grounded in a clear conscience and obedience flowing from love (3:21)ရဲရင့်စွာချဉ်းကပ်နိုင်သော စိတ်ချမှု. Risk: High, see 4:17.
πνεῦμαpneumapneuma”Spirit”the Holy Spirit given to believers as evidence of abiding in GodSpirit; the Spirit he has given usThe gift of the indwelling Spirit (3:24) as the ground of assurance of mutual abiding — anticipates the fuller treatment in 4:13ဝိညာဉ်တော် / သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော် — [BASELINE REUSE]. Risk: CRITICAL per baseline holy_spirit entry.

δοκιμάζετε τὰ πνεύματαdokimazete ta pneumatadokimazete ta pneumata”test/examine the spirits”to test/scrutinize by an authoritative standard, as one tests metal for puritytest the spiritsThe command underlying the doctrine “Testing the Spirits”: believers must evaluate spiritual claims and teachers against a fixed doctrinal standard (the confession of 4:2), not by subjective spiritual experience aloneဝိညာဉ်များကို စစ်ဆေးကြလော့ (weinnyin-myar-go sit-sei-kya-lo). Risk: High. Must be distinguished from Burmese folk-religious practice of consulting a spirit-medium (nat-kadaw) in trance to discern a spirit’s message or intention; the biblical “test” is doctrinal and propositional — does the spirit’s teaching confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh? — not an intuitive or experiential discernment achieved through trance or divination.
ψευδοπροφῆταιpseudoprophētaipseudoprophētai”false prophets”those who falsely claim to speak for Godfalse prophetsMany false prophets/teachers have gone out into the world, denying the true doctrine of Christမိစ္ဆာပရောဖက်များ (mikhsa-parawpeq-myar), built on [BASELINE REUSE] root ပရောဖက် (prophet) + မိစ္ဆာ (false/wrong). Risk: Medium.
πνεῦμα τοῦ ἀντιχρίστουpneuma tou antichristoupneuma tou antichristou”the spirit of the antichrist”the animating spiritual disposition of denial and opposition to Christ, already present and active in the worldspirit of antichrist; spirit of the antichristThe doctrinal test itself (4:2-3): confessing “Jesus Christ has come in the flesh” identifies the Spirit of God; denying it identifies the spirit of antichristအန္တီခရစ်၏ ဝိညာဉ် (Antikhrit i weinnyin). Risk: CRITICAL, see ἀντίχριστος, Chapter 2, and incarnation doctrine baseline entry.
ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθόταen sarki elēlythotaen sarki elēlythota”having come in the flesh” (perfect)a completed, abiding fact: the Son permanently took on real human fleshcome in the flesh; come as a human beingThe doctrinal touchstone of the whole letter: Jesus Christ’s genuine, permanent incarnation, denied by the false teachersဇာတိခန္ဓာဖြင့် ကြွလာတော်မူသည် (zarti-khanda-hpyin kywar-lar-taw-mu-thi), built on [BASELINE REUSE] root လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း (incarnation). Risk: CRITICAL per baseline incarnation entry — never rendered with vocabulary implying a temporary, illusory, or repeatable manifestation.
νικάωnikaōnikaō”to overcome, conquer, win victory”decisive spiritual victoryhave overcomeBelievers “have overcome” the false spirits/antichrists because “he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (4:4) — first occurrence of the letter’s “overcoming the world” doctrine, developed fully in Chapter 5အောင်နိုင်ခြင်း (aung-nain-chin). Risk: High, see full treatment, Chapter 5.

Verses 7–21: see Part A, Core Passage Verse-by-Verse Analysis, above.

Chapter 5 (1 John 5:1–21)

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBurmese Rendering & Risk
πιστεύω / πίστιςpisteuō / pistispisteuō / pistis”to believe” / “faith”[BASELINE REUSE] ယုံကြည်ခြင်းbelieves; faithBelieving that Jesus is the Christ is itself evidence of having been born of God (5:1); faith is “the victory that has overcome the world” (5:4)ယုံကြည်ခြင်း. Risk: Medium per baseline.
γεννάω (repeated)gennaōgennaō”born [of God]“see 4:7, 3:9 aboveborn of GodRepeated three times in ch. 5 (vv.1, 4, 18) as the climactic summary of the new-birth doctrine developed throughout the letterဘုရားသခင်ထံမှ ဖွားမြင်ခြင်း. Risk: CRITICAL, see 4:7.
νικάω / νῖκοςnikaō / nikosnikaō / nikos”to overcome, conquer” / “victory” (noun)decisive triumph over an opposing powerovercomes; the victory”This is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith” (5:4): victory over the κόσμος (the world’s opposing value-system and its lies) achieved through faith, not through self-generated moral effort or ascetic disciplineအောင်နိုင်ခြင်း / အောင်ပွဲ (aung-nain-chin / aung-pwe). Risk: High. Must be distinguished from the self-effort-driven “overcoming” of defilements (kilesa) pursued through one’s own meditative discipline in Buddhist practice; here victory over the world is achieved by faith in what Christ has already accomplished and by the new birth God has already given, not by the believer’s own accumulated spiritual attainment.
μαρτυρία / μαρτυρέωmartyria / martyreōmartyria / martyreō”testimony, witness” / “to testify”formal, authoritative testimony, here specifically God’s own testimony about his Son (5:6-11)testimony; witness; bears witnessThe Spirit, the water, and the blood together bear witness (5:6-8), and this constitutes God’s own testimony (5:9-10) — of greater weight than any human testimonyသက်သေခံချက် / သက်သေခံသည် (thet-thei-khan-chet / thet-thei-khan-thi). Risk: Medium.
ὕδωρ, αἷμα, πνεῦμα (triad)hydōr, haima, pneumahydōr, haima, pneuma”water, blood, Spirit”interpretively debated triad — commonly understood to evoke Christ’s baptism and death (or, in some readings, his death alone, with “water and blood” referring to the piercing in John 19:34) together with the Spirit’s ongoing testimonywater and the blood [and the Spirit]Three-fold witness confirming the reality and significance of the incarnate, crucified Christရေ၊ အသွေးတော်၊ ဝိညာဉ်တော် (yay, a-thway-taw, weinnyin-taw). Risk: Medium, primarily an interpretive/exegetical challenge rather than a lexical one; αἷμα and πνεῦμα individually retain the risk profiles noted above (blood: Medium; Spirit: Critical per baseline).
ζωὴ αἰώνιοςzōē aiōnioszōē aiōnios”eternal life”life of the age to come, already possessed in the present through the Son, and continuing forever in unbroken relationship with Godeternal life; everlasting lifeThe letter’s climactic assurance doctrine (5:11, 13, 20): “these things I have written…that you may know that you have eternal life”ထာဝရအသက် (htawara a-thet). Risk: CRITICAL. Must never be rendered or taught in terms compatible with နိဗ္ဗာန်ရောက်ခြင်း (attaining nirvana, the self-attained extinguishing of craving and escape from the cycle of rebirth — explicitly forbidden in the baseline for “salvation”) or with the notion of an indefinitely extended lifespan within samsara (e.g., long-lived deva/Brahma realms). Eternal life is life in relationship with a personal God, received now as a present possession through the Son and continuing forever — not a state of cessation or an extended but still-impermanent existence.
παρρησίαparrēsiaparrēsia”confidence”see 4:17, 3:21 aboveconfidenceConfidence in prayer, that God hears requests made according to his will (5:14)ရဲရင့်စွာချဉ်းကပ်နိုင်သော စိတ်ချမှု. Risk: High, see above.
ἁμαρτία πρὸς θάνατον / μὴ πρὸς θάνατονhamartia pros thanaton / mē pros thanatonhamartia pros thanaton”sin unto death” / “not unto death”a much-debated pastoral distinction (5:16-17), likely referring to a settled, unrepentant apostasy versus ordinary sins of the believersin that leads to death; sin not leading to deathPastoral guidance on intercessory prayer for a sinning brother, with a sobering exception for a particular category of sinသေခြင်းသို့ ဆိုက်စေသောအပြစ် / မဆိုက်စေသောအပြစ် (thei-chin-tho saik-say-thaw a-pyit). Risk: Medium. “Death” here is spiritual/eternal separation from God, not literal death or an inferior future rebirth destiny; requires careful pastoral framing distinct from karmic retribution categories.
ὁ πονηρόςho ponērosho ponēros”the evil one”a title for the devil (see διάβολος, Chapter 3)the evil one”The whole world lies in the power of the evil one” (5:19), while the one born of God is kept safe from himဆိုးညစ်သူ / မာရ်နတ် (soe-nyit-thu / Mardnat). Risk: High, see διάβολος, Chapter 3.
ἀληθινόςalēthinosalēthinos”true, genuine, real” (as opposed to counterfeit)genuineness as opposed to imitation or falsitytrue; the true God”We know…that we may know him who is true” (5:20) — God’s genuineness as the true God, set against the false gods/idols of the closing verseစစ်မှန်သော (ဘုရားသခင်) (sit-hman-thaw). Risk: Medium. Reinforces baseline’s Critical ဘုရားသခင် entry: the “true God” language should never be softened to make ဘုရားသခင် merely one genuine option among several ဘုရား-labeled objects of devotion.
εἴδωλαeidōlaeidōla”idols”images or objects of false worshipidols”Little children, keep yourselves from idols” (5:21) — the letter’s closing command, guarding the exclusive worship of the true God just affirmedရုပ်တု (yote-tu). Risk: High. ရုပ်တု is the established Myanmar Bible term for false-god images, distinct from generic ဘုရားပုံ/ဘုရားရုပ် (Buddha images), but given the visual and devotional centrality of Buddha images and nat shrines in Myanmar religious life, this verse requires sensitive pastoral framing distinguishing the exclusive worship due to ဘုရားသခင် (the one true God, per the CRITICAL baseline note on ဘုရား/ဘုရားသခင် ambiguity) from any object, image, or practice — however culturally central or beautiful — that competes for the devotion belonging to God alone.
