Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Galatians | English → Burmese
Method and Scope
This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every substantive parallel to the baseline Romans curriculum found across the full text of Galatians (chapters 1–6). Citations are normalized in the form Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., “Galatians 2:16”, “Genesis 15:6”) for consistent cross-document lookup in Phase 2. Where a quotation or theological claim is shared verbatim (or near-verbatim) with a passage already rendered in the Romans Language Package, a rendering-consistency rule is stated so that Phase 2 translation of Galatians reuses the exact established Burmese wording rather than producing an independent, potentially divergent translation of the same underlying Greek or Hebrew/LXX text.
Translation sensitivity ratings use the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Part A: Direct Old Testament Quotations (Formally Introduced)
| # | Galatians Citation | Quoted Text (sense) | OT Source | Related Character | Romans / NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Galatians 3:6 | ”Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness” | Genesis 15:6 | Abraham | Identical quotation to Romans 4:3. Anchors imputed_righteousness TM entry. | Critical — see Rendering-Consistency Rule 1 below. |
| 2 | Galatians 3:8 | ”In you shall all the nations be blessed” | Genesis 12:3 (cf. Genesis 18:18; 22:18) | Abraham | Thematic parallel to Romans 4:13, 4:16-17 (Abraham heir of the world/father of many nations); no verbatim Romans quotation, but same promise-to-the-nations trajectory | High — must retain unqualified “all the nations,” consonant with the Unity of Jews and Gentiles and Universal Scope of the Gospel doctrines already Critical/High in baseline. |
| 3 | Galatians 3:10 | ”Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law” | Deuteronomy 27:26 | — | Conceptually parallel to Romans 3:19-20 (law brings all under judgment); no shared verbatim NT quotation elsewhere in this corpus | High — κατάρα/curse language; see Part C. |
| 4 | Galatians 3:11 | ”The righteous shall live by faith” | Habakkuk 2:4 | — | Identical quotation to Romans 1:17, the thesis statement of the Romans curriculum. | Critical — see Rendering-Consistency Rule 2 below. |
| 5 | Galatians 3:12 | ”The one who does them shall live by them” | Leviticus 18:5 | — | Contrastive OT quotation establishing law’s performance-based logic, set against #4 | Medium — must preserve the stark either/or logic Paul builds (faith-life vs. law-performance-life). |
| 6 | Galatians 3:13 | ”Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree” | Deuteronomy 21:23 | Christ (typologically/messianically applied) | No direct Romans quotation of this text, but the substitutionary logic parallels Romans 8:3 (“condemned sin in the flesh”) and the propitiation language of Romans 3:25 | Critical — see Part C; must not be rendered so as to suggest a removable folk-curse. |
| 7 | Galatians 3:16 | ”to Abraham and to his offspring were the promises made” (singular “seed” argument) | Genesis 12:7; 13:15; 17:7; 24:7 (composite allusion, treated by Paul as a single formal citation) | Abraham, Christ | Parallel argumentative structure to Romans 4 (Abraham as father of all who believe) and to the seed_of_david TM pattern (Romans 1:3) | High — singular/collective wordplay; see Rendering-Consistency Rule 5. |
| 8 | Galatians 4:27 | ”Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear… for the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband” | Isaiah 54:1 | Sarah (typologically) | No direct Romans parallel; thematically resonant with the Gentile-inclusion promises cited in Romans 15:9-12 (a chain of OT citations on Gentile inclusion) | Medium — requires OT narrative background (Isaiah’s restoration-of-Zion context) for readers with low OT literacy. |
| 9 | Galatians 4:30 | ”Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman” | Genesis 21:10 | Hagar, Ishmael, Sarah, Isaac | Supports the Adoption and Sonship doctrine typologically; no direct Romans quotation, but conceptually parallel to Romans 9:7-8 (children of the promise vs. children of the flesh, also drawing on Isaac) | Medium/High — must be taught as a typological argument about covenant identity, not an ethnic or familial prescription. |
| 10 | Galatians 5:14 | ”You shall love your neighbor as yourself” | Leviticus 19:18 | — | Identical quotation to Romans 13:9. | Critical — see Rendering-Consistency Rule 3 below. |
Part B: Old Testament Allusions and Echoes (No Formal Citation Marker)
| # | Galatians Citation | Allusion | OT Source | Related Character | Romans / NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | Galatians 1:15 | ”set me apart before I was born, and called me” | Isaiah 49:1 (“The LORD called me from the womb”); Jeremiah 1:5 (“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you”) | Paul (echoing the prophetic-servant call pattern) | Reinforces the Divine Calling / Effectual Calling doctrine already High in baseline Romans (Romans 1:1; 8:28-30) | High — must not be read through Burmese astrological birth-omen frameworks; this is sovereign prophetic-style commissioning. |
| 12 | Galatians 1:16 | Gentile-directed apostolic commissioning | Isaiah 49:6 (“I will make you as a light for the nations”) background | Paul, Christ | Parallel to Romans 1:5 (obedience of faith among all the nations) and Romans 15:16-21 (Paul’s priestly Gentile-mission language) | Medium. |
| 13 | Galatians 2:6 | ”God shows no partiality” | Deuteronomy 10:17; 2 Chronicles 19:7; Job 34:19 | — | Same theological claim stated explicitly in Romans 2:11 (“For God shows no partiality”) | High — thematic (not verbatim-quotation) parallel; see Rendering-Consistency Rule 4. |
| 14 | Galatians 2:15-16 | ”not justified… by works of the law” premise echoes | Psalm 143:2 (“no one living is righteous before you”) | — | Directly and formally quoted in Romans 3:20. Galatians alludes to the same Psalm-grounded premise without formally citing it. | Critical — the underlying theological claim (no human is justified by law-works) must match the Romans 3:20/3:28 argument precisely; see Rendering-Consistency Rule 6. |
| 15 | Galatians 3:17 | ”four hundred and thirty years” | Exodus 12:40 | Moses, Abraham | Establishes the historical priority of promise over law; supports Abrahamic Covenant and Promise doctrine | Low. |
| 16 | Galatians 3:19 | law “put in place through angels by a mediator” | Deuteronomy 33:2 (LXX); cf. Acts 7:53; Hebrews 2:2 | Moses | No Romans parallel; unique to the Law’s Purpose doctrine’s argument for the law’s mediated, subordinate origin compared to God’s direct promise to Abraham | Medium. |
| 17 | Galatians 4:21-31 | Hagar and Sarah narrative, read typologically | Genesis 16; Genesis 17:15-21; Genesis 21:1-14 | Hagar, Sarah, Isaac, Ishmael, Abraham | Parallel to Romans 9:6-9 (Isaac as child of promise, contrasted with mere physical descent) | High — see Part C, typology entry. |
| 18 | Galatians 6:7-9 | sowing/reaping proverb | Job 4:8; Proverbs 22:8; Hosea 8:7; Proverbs 11:18 (wisdom-tradition commonplace) | — | Conceptually parallel to Romans 8:13 (living according to flesh vs. Spirit and its outcomes) but framed proverbially rather than doctrinally | High — see Part C on karma-collision risk. |
| 19 | Galatians 6:16 | ”peace… and mercy… upon the Israel of God” | Psalm 125:5; Psalm 128:6 (“Peace be upon Israel”) | — | Directly engages the same covenant-identity question addressed at length in Romans 9-11 (esp. Romans 9:6, “not all who are descended from Israel are Israel”; Romans 11:26) | High — see Rendering-Consistency Rule 7. |
| 20 | Galatians 6:15 | ”new creation” | Isaiah 65:17; Isaiah 66:22 (“new heavens and a new earth”) | — | Parallel to Romans 6:4 (walking in newness of life) and 2 Corinthians 5:17; the Romans corpus does not use this exact phrase but shares its eschatological logic | Critical — see Part C. |
Part C: Messianic References and Typology
| # | Galatians Citation | Type/Pattern | OT Type or Background | Fulfillment/Referent | Related Doctrine | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21 | Galatians 3:16, 3:29 | Singular “seed” of Abraham | Genesis promises to Abraham’s “seed” (singular collective noun) | Christ, and through him all who believe, Jew and Gentile alike | Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | High — parallels the established seed_of_david TM pattern (Romans 1:3); Christ as the singular Seed fulfills what the singular “seed of David” fulfills dynastically. Both patterns should use the same anwe-win (အနွယ်ဝင်) construction for consistency of translation feel across curricula. |
| 22 | Galatians 3:13 | Christ bearing the covenant curse | Deuteronomy 21:23 (the hanged man is cursed); the scapegoat and sin-bearing pattern of Leviticus 16 | Christ crucified, “become a curse for us” | Law’s Purpose; Crucified with Christ | Critical — substitutionary, once-for-all, historical curse-bearing; must not be rendered so as to imply a mystical affliction transferable by ritual, nor confused with the folk practice of ritually transferring a curse onto an object or animal. |
| 23 | Galatians 3:24-25 | The law as παιδαγωγός (temporary guardian) | Israel’s tutelage under the Mosaic law from Sinai to Christ | Christ’s coming ends the law’s custodial role | The Law’s Purpose | High — must be taught as a temporary function fulfilled and superseded, not abolished as if it were illegitimate; the guardian’s authority was real but time-bound. |
| 24 | Galatians 4:4 | ”God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” | Fulfillment of the entire OT covenant-history trajectory (Abrahamic promise + Davidic hope + prophetic expectation) | Christ’s Incarnation | Incarnation (baseline Critical); Adoption and Sonship | Critical — direct parallel to Romans 1:3 (seed of David according to the flesh) and Romans 8:3 (God sending his own Son); must use the established incarnation TM pattern (လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း) and son_of_god phrase in full. |
| 25 | Galatians 4:21-31 | Isaac/Ishmael, Sarah/Hagar as two-covenant typology | Genesis 16-21 narrative | Isaac types the children of promise/Spirit (believers); Ishmael types those who remain under law/flesh | Adoption and Sonship; Law and Grace | High — must be presented as Paul’s own inspired interpretive method (explicitly signaled by ἀλληγορούμενα, “these things may be interpreted allegorically,” Galatians 4:24), not a general license for arbitrary reading of any OT narrative. |
| 26 | Galatians 4:28-29 | Isaac persecuted by Ishmael, applied to the Galatian church’s present conflict | Genesis 21:9 | Believers “born according to the Spirit,” persecuted by those insisting on law-works | Freedom in Christ | Medium. |
| 27 | Galatians 6:15 | ”new creation” replacing circumcision/uncircumcision as the identity marker | Isaiah 65:17; 66:22 (eschatological new-creation hope) | Fulfilled proleptically now, in every believer united to Christ | Circumcision and the New Creation | Critical — must never be conflated with samsaric rebirth (ပြန်လည်မွေးဖွားခြင်း/ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း), the same forbidden-substitution family flagged for resurrection in the baseline. Flag for mandatory theologian review at every occurrence. |
Part D: Parallels to the Romans Language Package (Cross-Curriculum Consistency)
The following passages in Galatians restate, quote, or closely parallel material already rendered and locked in the Romans translation_memory.json. Because learners will move between the Romans and Galatians curricula, identical Burmese rendering is required wherever the underlying source text is identical or near-identical, per the baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents.”
| # | Galatians Passage | Romans Passage | Shared Content | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rule 1 | Galatians 3:6 | Romans 4:3 | Genesis 15:6 quotation: “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness” | The full verse — not merely the imputed_righteousness key phrase — must be rendered identically in both documents, including word order and particle choice, using ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်းအဖြစ် မှတ်တော်မူခြင်း as the operative phrase. |
| Rule 2 | Galatians 3:11 | Romans 1:17 | Habakkuk 2:4 quotation: “The righteous shall live by faith” | Romans 1:16-17 is already flagged in baseline as requiring identical rendering “across all documents.” Galatians 3:11 quotes the identical Habakkuk text and MUST use the exact same Burmese wording established for Romans 1:17, with no stylistic variation. |
| Rule 3 | Galatians 5:14 | Romans 13:9 | Leviticus 19:18 quotation: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” | Both documents quote the same LXX/Hebrew text; the Burmese rendering must be verbatim identical in both, using the love/ချစ်ခြင်းမေတ္တာ term consistently with the Galatians-specific translator note on distinguishing agape from Buddhist metta. |
| Rule 4 | Galatians 2:6 | Romans 2:11 | ”God shows no partiality” (theological claim, distinct underlying Greek constructions but identical doctrinal content) | Not a verbatim-quotation match, but the doctrinal content is identical; use a consistent Burmese formula for “God is not partial/does not show favoritism” across both documents rather than two independently-invented renderings. |
| Rule 5 | Galatians 3:16, 3:29 | Romans 1:3 (seed_of_david) | Singular-”seed” argument pattern | Use the same အနွယ်ဝင် (anwe-win) construction already fixed for seed_of_david; render as အာဗြဟံ၏အနွယ်ဝင် / ခရစ်တော်ဟူသောအနွယ်ဝင်, preserving structural parallelism with the Romans term for cross-curriculum recognizability. |
| Rule 6 | Galatians 2:16 | Romans 3:20, 3:28 | ”No one is justified by works of the law” — Galatians alludes to the same premise (rooted in Psalm 143:2) that Romans quotes formally | The theological claim and its key terms (justification, law, works of the law) must use identical TM renderings; treat Galatians 2:16 as functionally the same sentence as Romans 3:20/3:28 for consistency purposes even though the Greek wording differs slightly. |
| Rule 7 | Galatians 6:16 | Romans 9:6, 11:26 | ”Israel of God” / redefinition of true Israel | Use the established israel TM term (ဣသရေလ) as the base noun; ensure the surrounding phrase does not contradict the nuanced argument already carried in the baseline unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine notes — Gentile believers are not being called ethnic Israel, but are incorporated into the “Israel of God” as a theological category. |
| Rule 8 | Galatians 4:6 | Romans 8:15 | ”Abba, Father!” | Verbatim-required per baseline; both abba (အဗ္ဘ) and father (အဖ) TM entries apply without modification. |
| Rule 9 | Galatians 4:4-5 | Romans 8:3, 8:15-17 | Sending of the Son; adoption; heirs | Use identical son_of_god, adoption, incarnation TM renderings; the heir/inheritance vocabulary in Galatians 4:1-7 and 3:29 should match the heir-vocabulary register used for Romans 8:17. |
| Rule 10 | Galatians 2:20 | Romans 6:6, 6:8 | Union with Christ in his death (“crucified with Christ,” “died with Christ”) | The NEW crucified with Christ term (ခရစ်တော်နှင့်အတူ လက်ဝါးကပ်တိုင်တင်ခံရခြင်း) established for Galatians 2:20 should be treated as the base form that Romans 6:6/6:8’s “co-crucified”/“died with” language echoes; if Romans documents render this concept with different vocabulary, flag for theologian review to determine whether Romans should be updated for consistency or a documented reason for divergence is recorded. |
| Rule 11 | Galatians 3:27-28 | Romans 6:3-4; Romans 10:12 | Baptism into Christ; “no distinction” language (Jew/Greek) | Use baptized into Christ TM entry (နှစ်ခြင်းခံခြင်း) consistently; align “neither Jew nor Greek” (Galatians 3:28) rhetorically with “no distinction between Jew and Greek” (Romans 10:12) even though the Greek constructions differ, preserving the same unqualified force. |
| Rule 12 | Galatians 5:16-25 | Romans 8:1-13 | Flesh versus Spirit conflict; list-form ethical contrast | The moral sense of flesh (ဇာတိ, High risk per 08_core_glossary) must be applied consistently with however Romans 8 renders σάρξ in its moral sense; cross-check both documents’ translator notes at the point of first occurrence in each curriculum. |
| Rule 13 | Galatians 5:1, 5:13 | Romans 6:18, 6:22; Romans 8:21 | Freedom secured by Christ, not self-attained | The NEW freedom/liberty term (လွတ်လပ်ခြင်း) must be distinguished the same way in both curricula from Buddhist self-attained liberation-from-craving; ensure the Romans package’s own treatment of freedom-from-sin language (Romans 6) uses compatible, not contradictory, phrasing. |
Part E: Full-Book Chapter Coverage Confirmation
Every chapter of Galatians has been reviewed for OT quotation, allusion, messianic reference, typology, and Romans-parallel content:
- Chapter 1 — reviewed; contributes calling/commissioning allusions (Isaiah 49:1; Jeremiah 1:5) and the True Gospel/Apostleship doctrinal frame; no direct OT quotation, but background allusion density is meaningful and above.
- Chapter 2 — reviewed (core passage chapter); contributes the Psalm 143:2 premise echo, the “no partiality” allusion, and the doctrinal center of the whole letter; highest Critical-risk density outside chapter 3.
- Chapter 3 — reviewed; contributes the highest concentration of direct OT quotations (six formal citations) and the letter’s central messianic/typological argument (seed of Abraham, curse-bearing).
- Chapter 4 — reviewed; contributes the Hagar/Sarah typology, the Isaiah 54:1 and Genesis 21:10 quotations, and the Incarnation/Adoption parallel to Romans 8.
- Chapter 5 — reviewed; contributes the Leviticus 19:18 quotation (matching Romans 13:9) and the flesh/Spirit parallel to Romans 8.
- Chapter 6 — reviewed; contributes the sowing/reaping wisdom-tradition allusion, the Psalm 125:5/128:6 allusion behind “Israel of God,” and the Isaiah 65:17/66:22 new-creation background.
No chapter was found doctrinally or intertextually silent; all six are represented above.
Summary: Highest-Priority Cross-Reference Items for Phase 2
- Galatians 3:6 / Romans 4:3 (Genesis 15:6) — verbatim match required. Critical.
- Galatians 3:11 / Romans 1:17 (Habakkuk 2:4) — verbatim match required; thesis-verse-level consistency. Critical.
- Galatians 5:14 / Romans 13:9 (Leviticus 19:18) — verbatim match required. Critical.
- Galatians 4:6 / Romans 8:15 (Abba, Father) — verbatim match required. Critical.
- Galatians 3:13 (Deuteronomy 21:23, curse-bearing) and Galatians 6:15 (new creation) — both Critical, unique to Galatians, each requiring mandatory theologian review at every occurrence per the resurrection-term escalation model already established in baseline.
- Galatians 6:7-9 (sowing/reaping) — High risk of karma-collision; requires a translator note anchoring the proverb within the grace-framework of Galatians 2:21 and 3:1-14, not a merit-consequence economy.
