Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — Revelation 1–22
Koine Greek → Burmese (Myanmar) | Full-Book Coverage
Method and Scope
This document analyzes the entire book of Revelation in the original Koine Greek, chapter by chapter, first to last, with the core passage (Revelation 21:1–8) given full verse-by-verse treatment. Every load-bearing term is documented with: original Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and destination-language (Burmese) rendering with risk tier.
Baseline reuse rule: Any term already recorded in the Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json is reused exactly as recorded there, with a citation note. New terms required by Revelation’s distinct vocabulary (Lamb, Beast, Dragon, Abyss, etc.) are assigned risk tiers using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework defined in the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Risk tiers: Critical = doctrine-altering if mistranslated, theologian review mandatory. High = significant confusion/syncretism risk, theologian review mandatory. Medium = clarity reduced but meaning preserved, native-speaker review. Low = minor imprecision, automated review sufficient.
PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: Revelation 21:1–8 (Verse-by-Verse)
Revelation 21:1
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Destination-Language Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| καινός (καινὸν, καινήν) | kainos | new, freshly made | Can mean new in time (recently made) or new in kind/quality (unprecedented, of a different order); Revelation consistently uses the qualitative sense | new, fresh, unprecedented | The New Heaven and New Earth doctrine: not a repaired old cosmos nor another cycle, but a qualitatively transformed, permanent new creation | အသစ် (a-thit). Risk: High. Burmese Buddhist cosmology teaches cyclical world-ages (kappa) that are destroyed and re-formed repeatedly; အသစ် alone could be read as “the next cycle.” Requires translator note: this new heaven/earth is God’s final, non-repeating, permanent re-creation, not another turn of a cosmic wheel. |
| θάλασσα | thalassa | sea | Literal body of water; in Revelation’s symbolic register also the source of chaos, the abyss, and the beast (13:1) | sea, ocean | The sea, associated throughout Revelation with chaos, death, and the beast’s origin, has no place in the new creation — total removal of the sources of chaos and evil | ပင်လယ် (pinlay). Risk: Medium. Straightforward lexically, but the symbolic freight (sea = chaos/evil-origin, cf. 13:1) must be carried in teaching notes so “no more sea” is not read as a merely geographic curiosity. |
Revelation 21:2
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Destination-Language Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πόλις…ἁγία…Ἰερουσαλήμ | polis hagia Ierousalēm | the holy city, Jerusalem | A literal city name used symbolically for the consummated dwelling place of God’s redeemed people | holy city, new Jerusalem, holy Jerusalem | New Heaven and New Earth doctrine: the eschatological city is not a rebuilt earthly Jerusalem but the descent of God’s dwelling among his people | သန့်ရှင်းသောမြို့တော် ယေရုရှလင်မြို့သစ်. Uses baseline holy = သန့်ရှင်းသော (translation_memory.json). Risk: Critical. Must be taught as the final, once-for-all consummated city, not a this-worldly political capital or a Buddhist cosmological “pure land”-type realm attained through merit. |
| καταβαίνω (καταβαίνουσαν) | katabainon | to come/go down | Downward movement from a higher to a lower place | descending, coming down | Sovereignty of God over History: the city originates from God and descends to earth — salvation comes down from God, is never built upward by human or ritual effort | ကြွချတော်မူသော (honorific “descending”). Risk: Medium. Honorific verb form required for divine action, consistent with Myanmar Bible convention for God’s acts. |
| νύμφη (ὡς νύμφην) | nymphēn | bride | A woman betrothed or newly married; in Revelation, a fixed symbol for the redeemed covenant community | bride, betrothed woman | Church as Bride of Christ doctrine: the city = the corporate people of God, presented in complete readiness and purity for union with Christ | သတို့သမီး (thadoethami). Risk: Medium. Must be taught corporately (the whole redeemed people, not an individual woman) and must not be collapsed into literal marriage customs; ties to the “marriage of the Lamb” (Rev 19:7–9) and must render consistently there. |
| κοσμέω (κεκοσμημένην) | kekosmēmenēn | adorned, made ready, decorated | Careful, complete preparation and beautification | adorned, prepared, dressed | The Church’s readiness for Christ’s return is itself God’s finished work of preparation, not a self-attained state of merit or purification | တန်ဆာဆင်ပြီးသော (adorned/prepared). Risk: Medium. Care needed that “adorning” is received, not self-achieved through devotional works. |
Revelation 21:3
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Destination-Language Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| θρόνος | thronos | throne | Seat of royal/judicial authority; used throughout Revelation of God’s and the Lamb’s rule | throne | Sovereignty of God over History and Return and Reign of Christ: the voice issues from the seat of ultimate governing authority over all events | ရာဇပလ္လင်တော် (throne). Risk: Medium. Must be distinguished from an earthly ဘုရင် (king)‘s throne; consistent with baseline lord (သခင်) framework of exclusive supreme authority. |
| σκηνή / σκηνόω (σκηνώσει) | skēnē / skēnōsei | tent, tabernacle / to pitch a tent, dwell | Dwelling in the sense of God’s tabernacling presence among his people (cf. John 1:14, Exodus tabernacle) | dwelling, tabernacle, dwell/reside | Sovereignty of God over History and New Heaven/New Earth: the final, unmediated, permanent presence of God with his people — the goal toward which redemptive history moves | ကျိန်းဝပ်တော်မူခြင်း (kyein-wut-taw-mu-chin, honorific “to dwell/tabernacle”). Risk: High. Must convey permanent, personal divine co-residence, not a temporary visitation by a nat-spirit or an impersonal cosmic presence. |
| λαός (λαοὶ αὐτοῦ) | laoi autou | his peoples | God’s covenant people, here pluralized (peoples, plural) to signal the ingathering of all nations | people, peoples | Unity of Jews and Gentiles / Universal Scope of the Gospel (Romans doctrines carried forward): the consummated people of God drawn from every nation | လူစုတော်များ. Risk: Medium. Consistent with baseline treatment of “gentiles”/“nations” — must retain the plural, multi-national scope, not a single ethnic-religious in-group. |
| θεός | theos | God | (Reused exactly) | God | God’s own personal covenant presence, “God with them” — echoes Immanuel | ဘုရားသခင် (reuse: translation_memory.json “god”). Risk: Critical (per baseline). |
Revelation 21:4
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Destination-Language Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δάκρυον | dakryon | tear | A literal tear from weeping | tear, tears | God’s own personal, tender wiping away of every grief — total abolition of sorrow’s causes | မျက်ရည် (myet-yay). Risk: Low. |
| θάνατος | thanatos | death | Cessation of bodily life; in Revelation also personified (the rider “Death,” ch. 6) and paired with “second death” | death | Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil and Judgment doctrine: death itself — the last enemy — is abolished, never to recur | သေခြင်း (say-chin). New term — not in Romans baseline (resurrection and second death are baseline; “death” itself as a standalone term is added here). Risk: High. Must be distinguished from a Buddhist framing of death as one transition-point within an ongoing cycle of rebirth (samsara); here death’s final abolition is a one-time, permanent event within linear history, not a temporary gap between lives. |
| πένθος | penthos | mourning, grief | Ritual or personal mourning, often associated with funeral lament | mourning, grief | Vindication of the Saints: the very practice of mourning (culturally central in Burmese funeral custom) will have no further occasion | ငိုကြွေးမြည်တမ်းခြင်း. Risk: Low. |
| κραυγή | kraugē | crying out, outcry | Loud cry, whether of pain or lament | crying, outcry | Same as above — no more cause for anguished cries | ငိုကြွေးသံ. Risk: Low. |
| πόνος | ponos | pain, distress | Physical or existential pain/toil | pain, distress | Same as above — total, final removal of suffering’s causes, contrasted with the ongoing removal-in-progress of Buddhist practice | ဝေဒနာ. Risk: Medium. ဝေဒနာ is also a technical Buddhist term (one of the five aggregates, “feeling/sensation”). Context makes clear this refers to end-time abolition of suffering by God’s decisive act, not the ongoing discipline of observing and detaching from ဝေဒနာ through meditation. |
Revelation 21:5
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Destination-Language Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὁ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳ | ho kathēmenos epi tō thronō | the one seated on the throne | A fixed Revelation designation for God the sovereign ruler | he who sits on the throne, the enthroned one | Sovereignty of God over History: God himself, not a delegated agent, personally speaks and personally remakes all things | ရာဇပလ္လင်တော်ပေါ်ထိုင်တော်မူသောသူ. Risk: High. Title of God; must retain the personal, active, sovereign agency — not a passive or impersonal governing principle (contrast with ကံ, impersonal karmic causation, per baseline “providence” entry). |
| ποιέω (ποιῶ) καινά πάντα | poiō kaina panta | I make all things new | Active, ongoing/completed divine remaking | I make everything new | New Heaven and New Earth: God’s own direct, first-person declaration of total re-creation | ခပ်သိမ်းသောအရာတို့ကို ငါအသစ်ပြုပြီ. Risk: Critical. The verb must retain first-person divine agency; ties directly to the καινός note in 21:1 concerning cyclical cosmology risk. |
| πιστός καὶ ἀληθινός | pistos kai alēthinos | faithful and true | Reliable, trustworthy and corresponding to reality (not false or illusory) | faithful and true, trustworthy and genuine | Sovereignty of God over History: God’s spoken promises are certain, historically anchored guarantees, not provisional teachings subject to later supersession | သစ္စာရှိ၍ဟုတ်မှန်သော. Risk: Medium. ဟုတ်မှန်သော (“true/real”) should not be confused with a Buddhist “ultimate reality vs. conventional reality” framework; this is straightforward historical reliability of God’s word. |
Revelation 21:6
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Destination-Language Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γέγοναν | gegonan | it has happened, it is done | Perfect tense — a completed, settled accomplishment | it is done, it has come to pass | Sovereignty of God over History: the entire redemptive plan is declared finished and certain from God’s vantage point | ပြီးဆုံးပြီ. Risk: Medium. |
| Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ | Alpha kai to Ō | Alpha and Omega | First and last letters of the Greek alphabet, a merism for total comprehensiveness | Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last | Sovereignty of God over History: God encompasses and governs the entirety of history from its start to its close | အာလဖာနှင့် သြမေဂ (transliteration retained, per baseline pattern of preserving untranslatable proper/technical terms, e.g. “Abba”). Risk: Medium. Burmese script has no equivalent “first/last letter” idiom; must be paired with the explanatory phrase “အစနှင့်အဆုံး” (beginning and end) so meaning is not lost on readers unfamiliar with the Greek alphabet. |
| ἀρχὴ καὶ τέλος | archē kai telos | beginning and end | Origin and consummation | the beginning and the end | Same as above — restates Alpha/Omega in plain language | အစနှင့်အဆုံး. Risk: Low. |
| διψάω (τῷ διψῶντι) | dipsōnti | to thirst / the thirsty one | Physical thirst used figuratively for spiritual longing/need | the thirsty, one who thirsts | Assurance of God’s Final Victory: the invitation of final salvation is extended to all who recognize their need, echoing Isaiah 55 and John 4/7 | ရေငတ်သူ. Risk: Low. |
| πηγὴ τοῦ ὕδατος τῆς ζωῆς | pēgē tou hydatos tēs zōēs | spring/fountain of the water of life | A literal spring; figuratively, the inexhaustible source of eternal life | fountain/spring of living water, water of life | New Heaven and New Earth / Assurance of Final Victory: eternal life is God’s own inexhaustible, freely-given provision | အသက်ရေစမ်း. Risk: Medium. Must not be assimilated to Burmese merit-transfer water-pouring rituals (ရေသွန်ချ, common in dedication of merit); this is God’s own gift of life, not a ritual vehicle for merit. |
| δωρεάν | dōrean | freely, as a gift, without cost | Given gratuitously, without payment or merit required | freely, without cost, as a gift | Grace doctrine (baseline Critical): reinforces that eternal life, like grace itself, is unearned | အလကားပေးသည်/အခမဲ့ (freely given). Risk: Critical. Must be taught alongside baseline grace = ကျေးဇူးတော်; must never suggest the water of life is obtained through ကုသိုလ် (merit accumulation). Directly reinforces the baseline’s central grace-vs-merit distinction. |
Revelation 21:7
ὁ νικῶν κληρονομήσει ταῦτα, καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ θεὸς καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι υἱός.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Destination-Language Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὁ νικῶν | ho nikōn | the one who conquers/overcomes | Present participle, ongoing victorious action; Revelation’s refrain to each of the seven churches (chs. 2–3) and reprised here | the one who overcomes, the conqueror, the victor | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution: the believer’s final victory is secured through faithful endurance grounded in the Lamb’s own conquest (12:11), not self-generated spiritual attainment | အောင်နိုင်သူ (aung-naing-thu). Risk: High. Must be explicitly taught as victory accomplished “by the blood of the Lamb” (12:11), not victory achieved by overcoming one’s own defilements (kilesa) through personal discipline as in Buddhist practice — a close conceptual parallel that risks collapsing the doctrine into self-attained spiritual mastery. |
| κληρονομέω (κληρονομήσει) | klēronomēsei | to inherit | Legal reception of an inheritance as an heir | will inherit, will receive as inheritance | Adoption into God’s Family (baseline Medium): the overcomer receives the new creation itself as a full inheritance-right, not a probationary reward | အမွေခံရလိမ့်မည်. Risk: Medium. Consistent with baseline adoption (သားအဖြစ်လက်ခံခြင်း) framework: full, permanent inheritance, not partial or revocable. |
| θεός…υἱός | theos…huios | God…son | Covenant father-son relational language, echoing 2 Samuel 7:14 | God to him, and he…my son | Adoption into God’s Family: the redeemed overcomer is granted the full filial relationship of a son — note: this is adoptive sonship of believers, distinct from Christ’s unique, eternal Sonship (baseline son_of_god, Critical) | ဘုရားသခင်ဖြစ်တော်မူ၍ သူသည်ငါ့သားဖြစ်လိမ့်မည်. Reuse baseline father/son framework (အဖ, သားအဖြစ်လက်ခံခြင်း). Risk: High. Translator note required distinguishing this believer-sonship from Christ’s unique eternal Sonship (ဘုရားသခင်၏သားတော်) so the two are never confused. |
Revelation 21:8
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Destination-Language Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δειλός (δειλοῖς) | deilois | cowardly | Fearful, lacking courage/faithfulness under pressure to deny Christ | the cowardly, the fearful | Perseverance under Persecution (negative case): those who abandon faithful witness out of fear forfeit the inheritance promised in v.7 | သူရဲကောင်မဟုတ်သူများ/ကြောက်ရွံ့တွန့်ဆုတ်သူများ. Risk: Medium. Must convey faith-abandoning fear under persecution specifically, not ordinary timidity. |
| ἄπιστος (ἀπίστοις) | apistois | unbelieving, faithless | Lacking trust/reliance on Christ | the unbelieving, the faithless | Universal Human Accountability / Judgment doctrine: reuse baseline faith framework in its negation | ယုံကြည်ခြင်းမရှိသူများ. Reuse baseline faith (ယုံကြည်ခြင်း). Risk: Medium. |
| βδελυγμένος (ἐβδελυγμένοις) | ebdelygmenois | detestable, abominable | Morally repulsive, ritually/morally defiling | the detestable, the vile, the abominable | Judgment of the Wicked: total moral corruption incurring divine judgment | စက်ဆုပ်ရွံရှာဖွယ်ရာသူများ. Risk: Low. |
| φονεύς (φονεῦσιν) | phoneusin | murderer | One who unlawfully takes human life | murderers | Judgment of the Wicked: violation of the sanctity of life | လူသတ်သမား. Risk: Low. |
| πόρνος (πόρνοις) | pornois | sexually immoral person | Engaging in sexual immorality outside marriage; in Revelation also symbolic of religious unfaithfulness (cf. ch.17’s πόρνη, Babylon) | the sexually immoral, fornicators | Judgment of the Wicked: literal sexual sin, and symbolically, covenant unfaithfulness/idolatrous compromise | မတရားမှားယွင်းကျင့်သူများ. Risk: Medium. Literal sense must be kept alongside the awareness that ch. 17’s harlot-Babylon usage is symbolic-religious, not primarily sexual-ethical. |
| φαρμακός (φαρμάκοις) | pharmakois | sorcerer, one who practices magic/potions | Practitioner of magical arts, often via drugs/potions/spells | sorcerers, those who practice magic arts | Judgment of the Wicked: occult practice that seeks power or knowledge apart from and against God | မှော်ဆရာ (hmaw-hsara). Risk: High. Direct collision with Burmese folk-religious practice of consulting weizza (esoteric adepts) and in-yan protective/occult charms; must be taught as condemned practice categorically opposed to reliance on God, not a neutral folk-cultural service. |
| εἰδωλολάτρης (εἰδωλολάτραις) | eidōlolatrais | idolater | One who worships an image/idol as a god | idolaters, image-worshippers | Judgment of the Wicked / Worship of the Lamb (by contrast): exclusive worship belongs to God and the Lamb alone (cf. ch.5, ch.22:8-9) | ရုပ်တုကိုးကွယ်သူ. Risk: Critical. Given the centrality of Buddha-image veneration in Burmese religious life, this term requires the most careful pastoral handling in the whole book: it must be taught as worship of any created image/object AS a god, in the specific apocalyptic context of emperor-cult and beast-worship (chs. 13–14), and must not be delivered as an unqualified blanket accusation against Burmese cultural practice without careful theological framing. Mandatory theologian review for every occurrence. |
| ψευδής (ψευδέσιν) | pseudesin | liar, false one | One who speaks falsehood; in Revelation associated with the “false prophet” and Satan, “the father of lies” | liars, all who are false | Judgment of the Wicked: opposed to God who is “faithful and true” (v.5) | သူတစ်ပါးကိုလိမ်လည်ပြောသူများ/မုသာသုံးသူများ. Risk: Low. |
| λίμνη…πυρὶ καὶ θείῳ | limnē…pyri kai theiō | lake burning with fire and sulfur | A literal geographic feature (cf. Sodom, Gen 19) used as the fixed image for final, conscious, eternal judgment | lake of fire, lake of fire and sulfur/brimstone | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints: final, conscious, unending judgment, contrasted with the vindication and inheritance of v.7 | မီးအိုင် (mi-aing). Risk: Critical. Must not be conflated with ငရဲ (ngayeh), the Buddhist hell-realm, which is one of 31 samsaric rebirth-destinations, temporary, and escapable through accumulated merit across future lives. The lake of fire is final, eternal, and never followed by another rebirth. Mandatory translator note on every occurrence. |
| θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος | thanatos ho deuteros | the second death | The final, eternal separation from God following bodily death and the final judgment, as distinct from ordinary physical (“first”) death | second death | Judgment of the Wicked (Critical, ties directly to baseline salvation and resurrection entries): the ultimate and final destiny opposed to eternal life/inheritance | ဒုတိယသေခြင်း. Risk: Critical. Reuse baseline resurrection-adjacent framework (ထမြောက်ခြင်း = the opposite/positive destiny). Must never be softened into a temporary state or one stage within an ongoing rebirth cycle; this is the terminus, not a transition. |
PART 2 — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY, REVELATION 1–20 AND 22
(Revelation 21:9–27 is treated at the end of this Part as the continuation of chapter 21 beyond the core passage’s vv. 1–8.)
Chapter 1
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀποκάλυψις | apokalypsis | unveiling, uncovering | A disclosure of what was previously hidden; the book’s genre-title | revelation, apocalypse, unveiling | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine: God himself discloses hidden end-time realities through Christ, to be read as prophetic-symbolic disclosure, not fortune-telling | ဗျာဒိတ်တော်. Risk: High. Phonetically and conceptually close to ဗေဒင် (astrology/fortune-telling), already flagged in the Romans baseline as a false parallel for “prophet.” Must be taught as sovereign divine disclosure of God’s own redemptive plan, never predictive divination. |
| μαρτυρία / μάρτυς | martyria / martys | testimony / witness | Legal or eyewitness testimony; martys is the root of English “martyr” — one whose witness may cost their life | testimony, witness, martyr | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution: the book’s central call — faithful testimony to Jesus even at the cost of life (cf. 1:9, 2:13, 6:9, 11:7, 17:6, 20:4) | သက်သေခံခြင်း / သက်သေခံ. Risk: High. Must be distinguished from Buddhist self-mortification for personal merit; this is testimony to the truth of Christ’s lordship maintained under external persecution, vindicated by God, not a merit-generating ascetic act. |
| ὁ ὢν καὶ ὁ ἦν καὶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος | ho ōn kai ho ēn kai ho erchomenos | the one who is, who was, and who is coming | A threefold title asserting God’s eternal, unbroken existence across all of time | who is, and who was, and who is to come | Sovereignty of God over History: God stands sovereign over the entire timeline of history, past, present and future, not merely one phase of an impersonal cosmic cycle | ရှိတော်မူသော၊ ရှိခဲ့တော်မူသော၊ ကြွလာတော်မူမည့်သော. Risk: High. Must not be reduced to an impersonal principle (contrast baseline providence caution against ကံ); this is a personal divine title of active lordship over history’s entire course. |
| ἑπτὰ πνεύματα | hepta pneumata | seven spirits | Symbolic number (seven = fullness/completeness) referring to the fullness of the Holy Spirit’s presence and ministry before God’s throne | seven spirits, sevenfold Spirit | Sovereignty of God over History / the Holy Spirit’s full, active presence in God’s governance of the churches | ဝိညာဉ်တော်ခုနစ်ပါး. Risk: Critical. Must be taught immediately alongside baseline holy_spirit (သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော်) as the fullness of the one Holy Spirit, symbolically expressed as seven — never as seven distinct spirit-beings analogous to the 37 nats of Burmese folk religion (cf. baseline “intercession” caution). |
| αἷμα (of Christ) | haima | blood | Physical blood; theologically, the atoning sacrifice of Christ’s death | blood | Atonement (cf. Romans baseline escalation rule for atonement/propitiation language, Critical): “freed us from our sins by his blood” (1:5) | အသွေးတော်. New term, added to registry. Risk: Critical. Central to the Lamb’s sacrificial identity (see ch. 5, ch. 12:11, ch. 19:13); must always carry substitutionary, atoning force, distinct from any ritual blood-offering practice in Burmese folk religion. Mandatory theologian review. |
| πρωτότοκος τῶν νεκρῶν | prōtotokos tōn nekrōn | firstborn of the dead | Preeminence/rank language (as in Colossians 1:18), not birth order | firstborn from the dead, first to rise | Return and Reign of Christ / Resurrection of Christ (baseline Critical): Christ’s resurrection is the first of its kind and guarantees all future resurrection | သေသူတို့တွင် သားဦးဖြစ်တော်မူသော. Reuse baseline resurrection (ထမြောက်ခြင်း). Risk: High. Must convey rank/preeminence and guarantee of others’ future resurrection, not a literal birth-order claim nor a cycle of repeated incarnations. |
| βασιλεία…ἱερεῖς | basileia…hiereis | kingdom…priests | A royal-priestly corporate identity conferred on believers (echoing Exodus 19:6) | a kingdom and priests, kingdom of priests | Church as Bride of Christ (corporate identity) / Kingdom Mission (baseline Medium): every believer shares royal-priestly access to God, not a monastic priestly elite | နိုင်ငံတော်နှင့် ယဇ်ပုရောဟိတ်များ. Reuse baseline kingdom_of_god framework. Risk: Medium. ယဇ်ပုရောဟိတ် (priest) must be distinguished from the Buddhist monk (ရဟန်း/ဘုန်းကြီး) role; this is a priesthood of all believers, not an ordained ascetic class. |
| υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου | huios anthrōpou | son of man | Daniel 7 messianic title, denoting the exalted, divine-human judge-king | Son of Man | Return and Reign of Christ / Deity of Christ (baseline Critical): identifies the risen Christ in his glorified, judging authority | လူသားတော်. Risk: Critical. Must retain the Daniel 7 background of divine authority to judge and reign; not a merely human-sounding title implying reduced deity. |
| κλεῖς τοῦ θανάτου καὶ τοῦ ᾅδου / ᾍδης | kleis tou thanatou kai tou hadou / Hadēs | keys of Death and Hades / Hades | Authority-symbol (keys) over Death and Hades; Hades = the realm/holding-place of the dead prior to final judgment, distinct from the lake of fire | keys of death and hell, the grave / Hades | Return and Reign of Christ / Assurance of Final Victory: Christ holds sovereign, exclusive authority even over death and the realm of the dead | သေခြင်းနှင့် မရဏာနိုင်ငံ၏ သော့တော် / မရဏာနိုင်ငံ (marana nainggan, “realm of death”). Risk: High. Must not be rendered ငရဲ (which names the Buddhist hell-realm of active suffering) nor confused with the lake of fire; Hades is the intermediate holding-place of the dead awaiting final judgment (cf. 20:13-14, where Hades itself is finally cast into the lake of fire). |
Chapters 2–3 (Letters to the Seven Churches)
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὁ νικῶν | ho nikōn | the one who conquers | (See full treatment at 21:7 above.) Refrain closing each of the seven letters | he who overcomes, the one who conquers, the victor | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution: the promises of chs. 2–3 (tree of life, crown, hidden manna, morning star, book of life, pillar in the temple, shared throne) are all held out specifically to the one who perseveres in faithful witness | အောင်နိုင်သူ. (See 21:7.) Risk: High. |
| θλῖψις | thlipsis | pressure, affliction | Severe distress, oppression, persecution | tribulation, affliction, suffering | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution: real, present suffering for the churches under Roman imperial pressure, from which believers are not exempted but through which they are sustained | ဒုက္ခဆင်းရဲခြင်း. Risk: High. ဒုက္ခ (dukkha) is the foundational term of the Buddhist First Noble Truth (suffering inherent to existence, resolved through the Eightfold Path). Biblical θλῖψις is specific, historically-located persecution suffered for Christ’s sake, from which God himself delivers and vindicates — not a universal existential condition to be transcended by one’s own practice. Requires explicit translator note wherever this term appears. |
| ὑπομονή | hypomonē | remaining under, endurance | Steadfast endurance under pressure, active persevering rather than passive resignation | endurance, perseverance, patience | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution (central to Rev. 1:9, 2:2-3, 2:19, 3:10, 13:10, 14:12): Spirit-sustained fidelity while awaiting Christ’s return | ခံနိုင်ခြင်း. Risk: High. Distinguish from khanti (patience/forbearance as a Buddhist paramita virtue cultivated toward one’s own liberation); biblical endurance is grounded in hope of Christ’s return and God’s vindication, not self-cultivated virtue accumulating toward one’s own release. |
| δεύτερος θάνατος | deuteros thanatos | second death | (First occurrence, 2:11; see full treatment at 21:8.) | second death | Judgment of the Wicked | ဒုတိယသေခြင်း. (See 21:8.) Risk: Critical. |
| ξύλον τῆς ζωῆς | xylon tēs zōēs | tree of life | The Genesis 2–3 tree, restored (2:7; cf. 22:2,14,19) | tree of life | New Heaven and New Earth: access to the tree of life lost in Eden is fully restored to the overcomer | အသက်ပင်. Risk: High. Must be taught as the same tree denied in Genesis 3, now permanently accessible — the reversal of the Fall’s curse, not a generic symbol of vitality or a Bodhi-tree-style site of enlightenment attainment. |
| συναγωγὴ τοῦ Σατανᾶ | synagōgē tou Satana | synagogue of Satan | A local assembly acting in service of Satan’s opposition to the gospel | synagogue of Satan | Perseverance under Persecution: opposition to the faithful church can come even from within religiously-organized communities | စာတန်၏ တရားဇရပ်. Risk: High. Requires careful pastoral framing given the term’s original polemical target (a specific local Jewish community in conflict with the church) so it is not misapplied broadly. |
| μάννα, ψηφὶς λευκή, ἀστὴρ ὁ πρωϊνός, ῥάβδος σιδηρᾷ | manna, psēphis leukē, astēr ho prōinos, rhabdos sidēra | manna; white stone; morning star; iron rod | Symbolic overcomer-rewards: hidden manna (hidden divine sustenance), white stone (acquittal/new identity token), morning star (messianic authority, reprised of Christ himself at 22:16), rod of iron (Christ’s/the overcomer’s share in end-time rule, Ps 2) | hidden manna; white stone; morning star; rod of iron | Perseverance and Faithful Witness / Return and Reign of Christ: various symbolic images of the reward of faithful endurance and shared rule with Christ | မန္န (transliteration); ကျောက်ဖြူချောင်; မိုးသောက်ကြယ်; သံလှံတံ. Risk: Medium (each; symbolic/apocalyptic imagery requiring interpretive teaching notes rather than doctrine-collision risk). |
| κλεῖς τοῦ Δαβίδ | kleis tou Dauid | key of David | Authority over the Davidic messianic house (Isa 22:22) | key of David | Davidic Covenant (baseline High) / Return and Reign of Christ: Christ holds exclusive authority to open/shut access to God’s kingdom | ဒါဝိဒ်၏သော့တော်. Reuse baseline david (ဒါဝိဒ်). Risk: Medium. |
| χλιαρός | chliaros | lukewarm | Neither hot nor cold; tepid | lukewarm | Perseverance and Faithful Witness: half-hearted, compromised faith invites Christ’s rebuke and discipline | နွေးထွေးသော (မဟုတ်မလတ်ဖြစ်သော). Risk: Medium. Must convey spiritual half-heartedness/compromise, not a neutral temperature description. |
Chapter 4
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| θρόνος | thronos | throne | (Reused, see 21:5 and ch.1) | throne | Sovereignty of God over History: the throne-room vision establishes the fixed vantage point for the entire book | ရာဇပလ္လင်တော်. Risk: Medium. |
| ζῷον (ζῷα) | zōa | living creature | Four winged, worshiping heavenly beings surrounding God’s throne (cf. Ezekiel 1, Isaiah 6) | living creatures, four beasts (older English) | Worship of the Lamb / Sovereignty of God over History: perpetual, unceasing angelic-order worship of God’s holiness | သက်ရှိသတ္တဝါ. Risk: High. သတ္တဝါ is the ordinary Buddhist term for “sentient being” within samsara; must be clearly marked in context as specific, unique heavenly worship-beings surrounding God’s throne, not a reference to the general class of sentient beings subject to rebirth. |
| πρεσβύτερος (πρεσβύτεροι) | presbyteroi | elders | The twenty-four enthroned worshiping elders | elders, twenty-four elders | Worship of the Lamb / Church as God’s people (representative worship leadership) | အသက်ကြီးသူ (အကြီးအကဲ) နှစ်ဆယ်လေးပါး. Risk: Medium. |
| στέφανος | stephanos | crown, wreath | A victor’s wreath (not a royal diadem) | crown, wreath | Perseverance and Faithful Witness: reward laid before God in worship, given by grace rather than self-earned | သရဖူ. Risk: Low. |
| ἅγιος ἅγιος ἅγιος | hagios hagios hagios | holy, holy, holy | Triple repetition (Hebrew idiom for superlative) of God’s holiness (Isaiah 6:3) | holy, holy, holy | Worship of the Lamb / Sonship and Deity themes: God’s utterly unique moral and ontological set-apartness | သန့်ရှင်း၊ သန့်ရှင်း၊ သန့်ရှင်းတော်မူပါ. Reuse baseline holy (သန့်ရှင်းသော). Risk: High (per baseline). |
| παντοκράτωρ | pantokratōr | almighty, all-powerful | Ruler over all; a divine title | Almighty, All-Powerful One | Sovereignty of God over History: total, unrivaled divine power over history and creation | အနန္တတန်ခိုးရှင်. Risk: High. Reinforces baseline power_of_god (ဘုရားသခင်၏တန်ခိုးတော်) as a personal, active divine title, not amulet/relic potency (အနုဘော်တန်ခိုး, explicitly rejected in baseline). |
Chapter 5
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀρνίον | arnion | little lamb, lamb | Diminutive form of “lamb”; Revelation’s fixed title for Christ, used 28 times, always in his role as the slain-yet-victorious sacrificial king | the Lamb, the Lamb of God | Worship of the Lamb / Deity and Sonship of Christ / Judgment (the Lamb’s wrath, 6:16): the central Christological title of the whole book — the crucified Messiah who alone is worthy of the worship due to God | သိုးသငယ်တော် (thoethange-taw). Risk: Critical. The single most important new term for this curriculum. Must never be confused with an ordinary sacrificial animal in Burmese folk-religious sacrifice or nat-propitiation offerings; the honorific -တော် suffix (as used with ကျေးဇူးတော်, ဘုန်းတော်) marks this as a divine title, worthy of the same worship as God the Father (5:13-14). Mandatory theologian review for every occurrence. |
| σφραγίς / βιβλίον | sphragis / biblion | seal / scroll | A wax/clay seal securing a rolled document; the sealed scroll represents God’s hidden redemptive plan and judgment | seal(s) / scroll, book | Sovereignty of God over History: only the Lamb is worthy to open the scroll and unfold history’s climax | တံဆိပ် / စာစောင်. Risk: Medium. |
| λέων…ῥίζα Δαβίδ | leōn…rhiza Dauid | lion…root of David | Messianic titles (Genesis 49:9-10; Isaiah 11:1,10) | Lion of the tribe of Judah, Root of David | Davidic Covenant / Messianic Promise (baseline Critical): the Lamb who was slain is simultaneously the promised, victorious Davidic king | ယုဒအမျိုး၏ ခြင်္သေ့နှင့် ဒါဝိဒ်၏အမြစ်. Reuse baseline david, messiah. Risk: Critical. The lion/lamb juxtaposition (conquering king who conquers by being slain) is the theological hinge of the whole book and must be preserved intact. |
| ἐσφαγμένος | esphagmenos | having been slaughtered/slain | Perfect passive participle — a completed act of violent slaughter, with ongoing effect | slain, having been slain | Atonement / Worship of the Lamb: Christ’s sacrificial death is the ground of his worthiness to receive worship and to execute judgment | အသတ်ခံခဲ့သော. Risk: High. Must retain the violent, sacrificial, once-for-all nature of Christ’s death as the basis of worship — not a generic “died” but a slaughtered-yet-now-standing (5:6, “standing, as though slain”) paradoxical image. |
| ᾆσμα καινόν | asma kainon | new song | A song not previously sung, marking a new redemptive-historical act of God | new song | Worship of the Lamb: a uniquely appropriate response to the Lamb’s unprecedented redemptive achievement | သီချင်းသစ်. Risk: Low. |
| προσκυνέω | proskyneō | to prostrate oneself, worship | Physical bowing/prostration expressing worship, homage, or submission — directed to God alone when used absolutely in Revelation | worship, bow down, do homage | Worship of the Lamb (central doctrine): worship belonging exclusively to God is here explicitly extended to the Lamb (5:13-14), a direct assertion of Christ’s full deity | ကိုးကွယ်ခြင်း. Risk: Critical. ကိုးကွယ်ခြင်း is the standard, generic Burmese verb for religious veneration of any kind — Buddha images, nats, spirits, ancestors. Every occurrence in Revelation must be anchored to its specific, exclusive object (God and the Lamb only; contrast the repeated prohibition in 19:10 and 22:8-9 against worshiping angels). Mandatory theologian review. |
| ἄξιος | axios | worthy | Deserving, fitting recipient of honor | worthy | Worship of the Lamb: only the Lamb, uniquely, is declared worthy to open the scroll and receive worship | ထိုက်တန်သော. Risk: Medium. |
Chapter 6
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἵππος (λευκός, πυρρός, μέλας, χλωρός) | hippos (leukos, pyrros, melas, chlōros) | horse (white, fiery-red, black, pale-green) | Four symbolic riders unleashed at the Lamb’s opening of the first four seals | the four horsemen | Sovereignty of God over History / Judgment: God sovereignly permits conquest, war, famine, and death as instruments within his own unfolding plan, not as forces outside his control | မြင်းဖြူ၊ မြင်းနီ၊ မြင်းနက်၊ မြင်းညို (colors as descriptors). Risk: Medium. Symbolic/apocalyptic imagery; requires interpretive teaching note (Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine) rather than a literal-animal reading. |
| θάνατος / λιμός | thanatos / limos | death / famine | (θάνατος reused from 21:4) / severe food shortage | death / famine | Judgment of the Wicked: divinely permitted historical calamities | သေခြင်း / ငတ်မွတ်ခေါင်းပါးခြင်း. Risk: Medium/Low. |
| θυσιαστήριον | thysiastērion | altar | The heavenly altar, associated with the martyrs’ prayers | altar | Vindication of the Saints / Prayer and Intercession (baseline Medium): the martyrs’ cry for justice is heard at God’s own altar | ယဇ်ပလ္လင်. Risk: Medium. |
| ψυχαί (ὑποκάτω τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου) | psychai | souls | The conscious, continuing existence of martyred believers, crying out for justice | souls | Vindication of the Saints / intermediate state: personal conscious existence continues after physical death, awaiting final vindication | ဝိညာဉ်များ. Risk: High. Caution: baseline forbids ဝိညာဉ် ALONE or နတ်ဝိညာဉ် specifically as a rendering for the Holy Spirit; here the referent is different (departed human souls, not the Holy Spirit), but the term still touches Buddhist anatta (no-permanent-self) teaching, which denies any continuing personal entity after death. Must be taught as affirming continuing, conscious personal existence of believers after death, awaiting bodily resurrection and final vindication — not an impersonal, dissolving consciousness-stream. |
| ἐκδικέω | ekdikeō | to avenge, vindicate | Legal vindication/justice-execution on behalf of the wronged | avenge, vindicate, judge | Vindication of the Saints: God himself, not human vengeance, will execute perfect justice for the martyrs | တရားမျှတမှုပေးခြင်း/လက်စားချေခြင်း. Risk: Medium. |
| σεισμός | seismos | earthquake | Cosmic upheaval accompanying divine judgment | earthquake | Judgment of the Wicked: creation itself convulses under God’s judgment | မြေငလျင်. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 7
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σφραγίζω / σφραγίς (on foreheads) | sphragizō / sphragis | to seal / seal | A mark of ownership and protection placed on God’s servants, contrasted with the beast’s mark (ch. 13) | seal, sealed | Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil: God’s sovereign ownership and protection of his people amid coming judgment | တံဆိပ်ခတ်ခြင်း / ဘုရားသခင်၏တံဆိပ်တော်. Risk: High. Must be taught in direct contrast with the beast’s mark (χάραγμα, ch.13) — God’s seal marks belonging and protection; the beast’s mark marks allegiance and judgment. The two must never be rendered with overlapping vocabulary. |
| φυλή | phylē | tribe | The twelve tribes of Israel, listed symbolically (144,000) | tribe | Unity of Jews and Gentiles (baseline High): the redeemed community includes the completed number from ethnic Israel | မျိုးနွယ်စု. Risk: Low. |
| ὄχλος πολύς | ochlos polys | a great crowd | An uncountable multitude “from every nation, tribe, people, and language” | great multitude | Universal Scope of the Gospel (baseline High): the redeemed community is drawn from the whole world without ethnic limit | လူအုပ်ကြီးများ. Risk: Medium. Must retain the unqualified, universal, uncountable scope — resisting any nationalist or ethnic-majority reading. |
| στολαὶ λευκαί | stolai leukai | white robes | Symbolic garments of purity/vindication given to the redeemed, “washed…in the blood of the Lamb” | white robes | Vindication of the Saints / Atonement: purity is a gift received through the Lamb’s blood, not self-achieved | ဝတ်လုံဖြူများ. Risk: Medium. Must be tied explicitly to “washed in the blood of the Lamb” (7:14) so purity is not read as self-attained ritual/moral cleanliness. |
| φοίνιξ (φοίνικες) | phoinikes | palm branches | Symbols of victory/celebration (cf. John 12:13) | palm branches | Assurance of God’s Final Victory: joyful celebration of accomplished salvation | စွန်ပလွံခက်များ. Risk: Low. |
| σωτηρία | sōtēria | salvation | (Reused exactly from baseline) | salvation | Judgment/Vindication doctrine: the great multitude ascribes their salvation to God and the Lamb | ကယ်တင်ခြင်း (reuse: translation_memory.json “salvation”). Risk: Critical (per baseline). |
Chapter 8
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σάλπιγξ | salpinx | trumpet | A ram’s-horn or metal trumpet, used to announce the seven successive judgments | trumpet | Sovereignty of God over History / Judgment: God announces and orchestrates the unfolding of judgment in sequence | တံပိုးခရာ. Risk: Low. |
| θυμιάματα…προσευχαὶ τῶν ἁγίων | thymiamata…proseuchai tōn hagiōn | incense…prayers of the saints | Incense offered with the prayers of God’s people, rising before his throne | incense, the prayers of the saints | Prayer and Intercession (baseline Medium): the church’s prayers are received directly by God and have real effect in the unfolding of history | နံ့သာပေါင်း…သန့်ရှင်းသူများ၏ ဆုတောင်းချက်များ. Reuse baseline saints (သန့်ရှင်းသူများ). Risk: Medium. Must not be read as ritual merit-generating incense-offering as at a pagoda, but as the fragrant acceptability of believers’ direct prayers to God. |
| χάλαζα / ἄψινθος | chalaza / apsinthos | hail / wormwood | Judgment-imagery drawn from the Exodus plagues / a bitter plant, here poisoning waters | hail / wormwood | Judgment of the Wicked: God’s judgments recapitulate and escalate the Exodus plague pattern | မိုးသီး / ဒေါနပင် (ခါးသောအပင်). Risk: Low. |
Chapter 9
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἄβυσσος | abyssos | bottomless, the abyss | A shaft/pit imprisoning demonic powers, opened and later sealed shut (cf. ch.20) | abyss, bottomless pit | Sovereignty of God over History / Cosmic Conflict: even the demonic realm operates only within limits set by God, who alone holds the key | အနက်ရှိုင်းသောတွင်း. Risk: Medium. Distinct from ငရဲ (final hell/lake of fire); the abyss is a temporary holding-prison for demonic forces released and later re-bound (20:1-3), not the final destination of judgment. |
| ἀκρίς (ἀκρίδες) | akrides | locusts | Demonic locust-army, echoing the Exodus plague of locusts but here explicitly demonic and torment-inflicting | locusts | Judgment of the Wicked: symbolic apocalyptic imagery representing demonically-empowered torment permitted under God’s sovereign limits | ကျိုင်း (နတ်ဆိုးတပ်ဖွဲ့). Risk: Medium. Requires clear apocalyptic-symbolic framing (Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine), not a literal-insect reading. |
| Ἀπολλύων | Apollyōn | Destroyer | Proper name of the angel-king of the abyss, meaning “Destroyer” | Apollyon, the Destroyer | Cosmic Conflict: a named demonic ruler subordinate to, and ultimately defeated by, God’s sovereign plan | အပေါလျုန် (destroyer). Risk: Low. Transliterated proper name with gloss. |
Chapter 10
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| βιβλαρίδιον | biblaridion | little scroll | A small scroll John is commanded to eat (echoing Ezekiel 2:8–3:3) | little scroll | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation / Perseverance in Witness: the prophetic word must be personally internalized before it can be proclaimed, and it will be both sweet (privilege of revelation) and bitter (cost of proclaiming judgment) | စာလိပ်ငယ်. Risk: Low. |
| γλυκύς / πικρός | glykys / pikros | sweet / bitter | Taste-contrast describing the effect of receiving and proclaiming God’s prophetic word | sweet / bitter | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution: the privilege of God’s revealed word carries the real cost of proclaiming hard truths | ချိုသော / ခါးသော. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 11
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δύο μάρτυρες | dyo martyres | two witnesses | Two prophetic figures (echoing Moses/Elijah) who testify, are killed, and are raised | two witnesses | Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution / Resurrection: faithful testimony may cost life itself, yet God vindicates his witnesses through resurrection | သက်သေခံနှစ်ဦး. Reuse μαρτυρία/μάρτυς framework (ch.1). Risk: High. The pattern of witness-unto-death followed by resurrection-vindication is the paradigm for the whole church’s calling under persecution; must not be softened into mere survival-without-cost. |
| θηρίον (first mention, ἐκ τῆς ἀβύσσου) | thērion | beast, wild animal | (First appearance of Revelation’s fixed symbolic figure for satanically-empowered political/religious power; full treatment ch.13) | the beast | Cosmic Conflict / Judgment: the beast’s brief triumph over the witnesses is itself bounded and reversed by God | သားရဲ. (See full treatment, ch.13.) Risk: Critical. |
| ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ | naos tou theou | temple of God | God’s heavenly sanctuary/dwelling, and symbolically the covenant community under his protection | temple of God | New Heaven and New Earth (anticipated) / Sovereignty of God over History | ဗိမာန်တော်. Risk: High. Distinct from ဘုရားကျောင်း (pagoda compound, explicitly rejected in Romans baseline for “church”); ဗိမာန်တော် names God’s own unique dwelling-place, whether the earthly-symbolic temple in view here or the direct divine presence of 21:22. |
Chapter 12
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γυνή | gynē | woman | A symbolic woman (representing the covenant people/Israel/the Messianic community) giving birth to the Messiah, pursued by the dragon | the woman | Sovereignty of God over History / Church as Bride of Christ (background): God’s covenant people are the vehicle of the Messiah’s coming and the ongoing target of satanic hostility, yet are preserved by God | အမျိုးသမီး (တင်စားချက်). Risk: Medium. Requires explicit symbolic/apocalyptic framing; not a literal individual woman. |
| δράκων | drakōn | dragon, serpent | The great red dragon, explicitly identified as Satan (12:9) | dragon | Cosmic Conflict / Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil: the ultimate opponent of God and his people, already defeated in principle at the cross and finally destroyed at the end | နဂါး (naga). Risk: Critical. Direct and severe collision: နဂါး (naga) is a major benevolent/ambivalent figure in Burmese Buddhist cosmology and folk religion — serpent-deities regarded as guardians of pagodas, treasure, and sacred sites, often venerated for protection. Revelation’s dragon is the opposite: a defeated, condemned, wholly malevolent enemy of God, explicitly named Satan and the devil (12:9), destined for final destruction (20:10). Mandatory theologian review and an explicit translator note distinguishing this dragon from any naga-guardian figure is required at every occurrence (12:3-17; 13:2,4,11; 16:13; 20:2). |
| Μιχαήλ | Michaēl | Michael | Proper name, the archangel who leads heaven’s forces against the dragon | Michael | Cosmic Conflict / Sovereignty of God over History: God’s heavenly forces actively and successfully oppose Satan under God’s command | မိက္ခေလ (transliteration). Risk: Low. |
| ὁ ὄφις ὁ ἀρχαῖος / Σατανᾶς / διάβολος | ho ophis ho archaios / Satanas / diabolos | the ancient serpent / Satan / the devil (accuser/slanderer) | A cluster of titles identifying the dragon with the Genesis 3 serpent, the Hebrew “Satan” (adversary), and the Greek “devil” (slanderous accuser) | the ancient serpent, Satan, the devil | Cosmic Conflict / Sovereignty of God over History and Assurance of Final Victory: one single, personal, historically continuous evil adversary defeated decisively by the Lamb’s blood and the word of testimony (12:11) | ရှေးဟောင်းမြွေ / စာတန် / မာရ်နတ်. Risk: Critical. မာရ်နတ် (mara-nat) is the established Myanmar Christian rendering, but it directly borrows the name of Māra, the Buddhist tempter-deity who unsuccessfully assailed the Buddha before his enlightenment. Mara in Buddhist teaching is a temporary obstruction overcome by the Buddha’s own unaided spiritual attainment; biblical Satan is a real personal fallen being engaged in an actual cosmic rebellion against the Creator, defeated not by human self-effort but by the Lamb’s blood and finally and permanently condemned by God’s own judgment (20:10). This distinction must be taught explicitly at every occurrence. Mandatory theologian review. |
| κατήγορος | katēgoros | accuser | Legal/courtroom term for a prosecuting accuser | accuser | Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil: the accuser’s power to condemn the saints before God is broken by the Lamb’s blood and the saints’ testimony (12:10-11) | စွပ်စွဲသူ. Risk: Medium. |
Chapter 13
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| θηρίον (two beasts, from the sea and from the earth) | thērion | wild beast | A symbolic figure for satanically-empowered political and religious authority opposing God and persecuting the saints | the beast(s), antichrist figure(s) | Cosmic Conflict / Perseverance under Persecution / Judgment of the Wicked: worldly power structures, however dominant, are temporary, satanically-derived, and destined for final judgment | သားရဲ. Risk: Critical. Consistently rendered သားရဲ (a wild/fierce beast) throughout, never သတ္တဝါ (generic sentient being) nor a term suggesting an ordinary animal; must be taught as the fixed apocalyptic-symbolic figure for the ultimate anti-God world-power, in direct contrast and parody of the Lamb. Mandatory theologian review for every occurrence (chs. 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20). |
| χάραγμα | charagma | mark, stamp | A mark of ownership/allegiance placed on the hand or forehead of the beast’s followers | mark (of the beast) | Judgment of the Wicked (directly opposed to God’s seal, ch.7): visible, decisive allegiance to the beast’s system, incurring final judgment | သားရဲ၏အမှတ်တံဆိပ်. Risk: Critical. Must be distinguished from Burmese sak-yant-style protective tattoo markings (အင်း/ယန္တရား) sought for protection or power in folk practice; this mark signifies binding allegiance to the beast’s anti-God system, the direct opposite of God’s protective seal (ch.7). |
| ἀριθμὸς τοῦ θηρίου (666) | arithmos tou thēriou | number of the beast | A symbolic numeric cipher (gematria), traditionally 666 | number of the beast, 666 | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation: requires careful, non-speculative teaching on symbolic numbers rather than modern numerological application | သားရဲ၏ အရေအတွက် (၆၆၆). Risk: Medium. Numeral convention note: per baseline citation practice, working documents use Arabic numerals (666) though published Myanmar print traditionally uses Myanmar numerals (၆၆၆). |
| εἰκὼν τοῦ θηρίου | eikōn tou thēriou | image of the beast | An image/statue of the beast demanded to be worshiped, echoing imperial-cult emperor-worship | image of the beast | Worship of the Lamb (by direct contrast) / Judgment of the Wicked: idolatrous worship of a human/political power-image, opposed to worship of the Lamb alone | သားရဲ၏ ရုပ်တု. Risk: Critical. Direct collision point with image-veneration practice; must be taught in its specific historical-apocalyptic context (compelled worship of an imperial/political image under threat of death) rather than delivered as an undifferentiated critique of all religious imagery. Mandatory theologian review. |
Chapter 14
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀρνίον | arnion | Lamb | (Reused, ch.5) — here standing triumphant on Mount Zion with the 144,000 | the Lamb | Worship of the Lamb / Vindication of the Saints | သိုးသငယ်တော်. (See ch.5.) Risk: Critical. |
| ἀπαρχή | aparchē | firstfruits | The first portion of a harvest, dedicated to God, guaranteeing the full harvest to come | firstfruits | Vindication of the Saints: the redeemed are a guaranteed, dedicated portion belonging to God and the Lamb | အဦးအဖျားသီးနှံ. Risk: Low. |
| εὐαγγέλιον αἰώνιον | euangelion aiōnion | eternal gospel | The unchanging, ever-valid gospel proclaimed to all peoples in the end-time | eternal gospel, everlasting gospel | Sovereignty of God over History / Gospel doctrine (baseline High): reuse baseline gospel term, qualified as eternally unchanging | ထာဝရသတင်းကောင်း. Reuse baseline gospel (သတင်းကောင်း). Risk: High (per baseline gospel entry). |
| Βαβυλών (first mention, “Babylon the great has fallen”) | Babylōn | Babylon | A proper historical name reused symbolically for the corrupt, God-opposing world-system/empire (full treatment ch.17-18) | Babylon | Judgment of the Wicked / Sovereignty of God over History: the ultimate defeat of every anti-God civilizational power | ဗာဗုလုန် (transliteration). Risk: Medium. Must be taught as symbolic of any and every corrupt world-system opposed to God, not merely the ancient historical empire. |
| θερισμός / δρέπανον / ληνὸς τοῦ θυμοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ | therismos / drepanon / lēnos tou thymou tou theou | harvest / sickle / winepress of God’s wrath | Agricultural judgment-imagery: the earth’s “harvest” of final judgment, gathered by a sickle, trodden in the winepress of divine wrath | harvest; sickle; winepress of the wrath of God | Judgment of the Wicked: the decisive, final ingathering of humanity for either reward or judgment | စပါးရိတ်သိမ်းခြင်း / တံစဉ် / ဘုရားသခင်၏ အမျက်တော်စက်ရံ. Risk: Medium. Symbolic/apocalyptic imagery requiring interpretive framing. |
Chapter 15
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ᾠδὴ Μωϋσέως καὶ ᾠδὴ τοῦ ἀρνίου | ōdē Mōuseōs kai ōdē tou arniou | song of Moses and song of the Lamb | Worship-song combining Exodus deliverance (Moses) with the Lamb’s greater deliverance | song of Moses and of the Lamb | Worship of the Lamb / Sovereignty of God over History: the Lamb’s redemption is the fulfillment and greater antitype of the Exodus deliverance | မောရှေ၏သီချင်းနှင့် သိုးသငယ်တော်၏သီချင်း. Reuse baseline moses (naming convention) and ἀρνίον. Risk: Medium. |
| φιάλη (φιάλαι) | phialai | bowl(s) | Shallow libation bowls, here containing God’s final judgments | bowls (of wrath) | Judgment of the Wicked: the last, complete outpouring of divine judgment (full treatment ch.16) | ဖလား. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 16
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| φιάλαι τοῦ θυμοῦ | phialai tou thymou | bowls of wrath | The seven final, complete judgments poured out on the beast’s kingdom | bowls of God’s wrath | Judgment of the Wicked / Sovereignty of God over History: God’s righteous anger is deliberate, measured, and historically decisive, not capricious | အမျက်တော်ဖလားများ. Risk: Medium. |
| Ἁρμαγεδών | Harmagedōn | Armageddon (Har-Megiddo) | Proper place-name (Hebrew, “Mount of Megiddo”), symbolic site of the final gathering of hostile powers against God | Armageddon | Return and Reign of Christ / Judgment of the Wicked: the final, decisive confrontation and defeat of all opposition to God | ဟာမေဂေဒုန် (transliteration; native-speaker review recommended to confirm exact Myanmar Bible Society spelling convention). Risk: Low. |
| βλασφημέω | blasphēmeō | to blaspheme, revile | Speaking contemptuous, defiant words directly against God | blaspheme | Judgment of the Wicked / Sovereignty of God over History: hardened rebellion refuses repentance even under direct divine judgment | ဘုရားကိုပြစ်မှားခြင်း/ကျိန်ဆဲခြင်း. Risk: High. |
Chapter 17
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πόρνη | pornē | prostitute, harlot | A symbolic woman representing a corrupt religious-political system in illicit alliance with worldly power (“Babylon”) | the great prostitute/harlot | Church as Bride of Christ (by direct contrast) / Judgment of the Wicked: a corrupt counterfeit “bride,” opposed to the true, pure Bride of Christ (ch.19, 21) | ပြည့်တန်ဆာ. Risk: High. Must be taught explicitly as a symbolic figure for a corrupt religious-political-economic system, deliberately contrasted with the true Bride of the Lamb (19:7-9; 21:2,9), not as commentary on literal individuals or on women generally. |
| θηρίον κόκκινον | thērion kokkinon | scarlet beast | The beast (see ch.13) on which the harlot rides, here specified as scarlet/crimson-colored | scarlet beast | Cosmic Conflict / Judgment of the Wicked | အနီရောင်သားရဲ. Risk: Critical (reuse θηρίον, ch.13). |
| μυστήριον | mystērion | mystery | A hidden divine truth now disclosed through interpretation (here, the meaning of the vision) | mystery | Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation: apocalyptic images require, and receive, divinely-given interpretation, not private speculation | နက်နဲသောအရာ / လျှို့ဝှက်ချက်. Risk: Medium. |
| κλητοὶ καὶ ἐκλεκτοὶ καὶ πιστοί | klētoi kai eklektoi kai pistoi | called and chosen and faithful | Triad describing those who stand with the Lamb in the final conflict | called, chosen, and faithful | Divine Calling / Election (baseline High, reused exactly) / Perseverance and Faithful Witness: God’s sovereign call and choice are inseparably joined to faithful endurance | ခေါ်တော်မူသောသူများ၊ ရွေးကောက်ခံရသောသူများ၊ သစ္စာရှိသောသူများ. Reuse baseline called (ခေါ်တော်မူသော) and election (ရွေးကောက်ခြင်း). Risk: High (per baseline entries). |
Chapter 18
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Βαβυλὼν ἡ μεγάλη | Babylōn hē megalē | Babylon the great | The full symbolic name of the corrupt world-system, now in its judgment-lament | Babylon the great | Judgment of the Wicked / Sovereignty of God over History: the certain, historically-final collapse of every anti-God civilizational and economic system | ဗာဗုလုန်မြို့ကြီး. (See ch.14.) Risk: Medium. |
| πτῶσις | ptōsis | fall, collapse | Sudden, total downfall | fall | Judgment of the Wicked: the total and irreversible nature of divine judgment on corrupt systems | ကျဆုံးခြင်း. Risk: Low. |
| ἐμπόριον | emporion | trade, merchandise, commerce | Commercial trafficking; ch.18’s extended lament catalogs Babylon’s luxury trade | merchandise, trade, commerce | Judgment of the Wicked: economic systems built on exploitation and idolatrous excess are included in God’s judgment | ကုန်သွယ်မှု. Risk: Low. |
| θρῆνος | thrēnos | dirge, lament | A funeral song of mourning, sung here ironically by those who profited from Babylon | lament, dirge, wailing | Judgment of the Wicked: worldly grief over lost profit, contrasted with heaven’s rejoicing (ch.19:1-6) over God’s justice | ငိုကြွေးမြည်တမ်းခြင်း. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 19
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἁλληλουϊά | hallēlouia | praise the LORD (Hebrew) | A fixed Hebrew liturgical exclamation of praise | Hallelujah | Worship of the Lamb: heaven’s exultant response to the final judgment of Babylon and the approaching marriage of the Lamb | ဟာလေလုယ (established transliteration, per baseline system prompt). Risk: Low. |
| γάμος τοῦ ἀρνίου / νύμφη | gamos tou arniou / nymphē | marriage of the Lamb / bride | The wedding celebration uniting Christ and his redeemed people, prepared and clothed in “the righteous deeds of the saints” | marriage/wedding of the Lamb; bride | Church as Bride of Christ (central doctrine): the consummation of the whole redemptive relationship between Christ and his people | သိုးသငယ်တော်၏ မင်္ဂလာဆောင်ပွဲ / သတို့သမီး. (See 21:2.) Risk: Critical. Central to the Bride doctrine; the wedding garments are explicitly identified as “the righteous acts of the saints” granted to her (19:8) — must reinforce that even this righteousness is a granted gift (reuse baseline righteousness, imputed_righteousness), not self-woven merit. |
| ἵππος λευκός (rider) | hippos leukos | white horse | The victorious, returning Christ riding in final judgment (contrast the first horseman of ch.6) | rider on a white horse | Return and Reign of Christ (central doctrine): Christ’s visible, triumphant, historical return to judge and reign | မြင်းဖြူ (စီးနင်းကြွလာတော်မူသောအရှင်). Risk: Critical. Must be distinguished in teaching from the first seal’s white horse (ch.6, a symbol of conquest/false peace); this is Christ himself, explicitly identified as “Faithful and True” (19:11), “King of kings and Lord of lords” (19:16). |
| βασιλεὺς βασιλέων καὶ κύριος κυρίων | basileus basileōn kai kyrios kyriōn | king of kings and lord of lords | A superlative compound title asserting absolute supremacy over every earthly ruler and authority | King of kings, Lord of lords | Return and Reign of Christ / Lordship of Christ (baseline Critical): Christ’s supreme, exclusive, unrivaled sovereignty over all earthly and cosmic power | ဘုရင်တို့၏ဘုရင်၊ အရှင်တို့၏အရှင်. Reuse baseline lord (သခင်) in compound form. Risk: Critical. Note: baseline rejects ဘုရင် alone as a rendering for “Lord” (since it names only an earthly king); here, however, the compound explicitly subordinates all earthly ဘုရင်/kings under Christ’s supreme rule, which is a legitimate and necessary use distinct from that caution. Theologian review required to confirm the compound is never misread as reducing Christ to “a king among kings.” |
| ῥομφαία (ἐκ τοῦ στόματος) | rhomphaia | sword (from his mouth) | Symbolic sword of Christ’s spoken judging authority (echoing Isaiah 11:4, Hebrews 4:12) | sharp sword | Return and Reign of Christ / Judgment of the Wicked: Christ judges by the power of his own spoken word, not by literal weaponry | ထား (နှုတ်တော်ထဲမှ ထွက်သော). Risk: Medium. Symbolic, requires teaching note (Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine). |
| Λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ | Logos tou theou | Word of God | A Christological title (cf. John 1:1) identifying Christ himself as God’s own self-expression | the Word of God | Deity of Christ (baseline Critical, extended): Christ’s divine identity as God’s eternal self-revelation | ဘုရားသခင်၏ နှုတ်ကပတ်တော်. Risk: Critical. Consistent with established Myanmar Bible Johannine usage (John 1:1); must retain full deity implication — this is not “a message from God” but God’s own eternal Word, himself divine. |
| δεῖπνον τοῦ ἀρνίου | deipnon tou arniou | supper/feast of the Lamb | The wedding banquet, offered here in double, ironic contrast: the blessed supper of the Lamb (19:9) vs. the grim “supper” of birds feeding on the defeated (19:17-18) | marriage supper of the Lamb / (grim) supper of birds | Church as Bride of Christ / Judgment of the Wicked: two opposite banquets, one of blessing and one of judgment, framing the choice before every reader | သိုးသငယ်တော်၏ ညစာပွဲတော်. Risk: Medium. |
| λίμνη τοῦ πυρός (first mention, of the beast and false prophet) | limnē tou pyros | lake of fire | (See full treatment at 21:8.) | lake of fire | Judgment of the Wicked | မီးအိုင်. (See 21:8.) Risk: Critical. |
Chapter 20
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| χίλια ἔτη | chilia etē | a thousand years | A specific, though debated, temporal span of Christ’s/the saints’ reign prior to the final judgment | thousand years, millennium | Return and Reign of Christ (central doctrine, and a major interpretive fault-line requiring Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation care): the nature (literal/symbolic) and timing of this reign is historically debated among faithful interpreters | အနှစ်တစ်ထောင်. Risk: Medium. Requires an explicit interpretive note flagging the range of legitimate millennial-view interpretations (premillennial/amillennial/postmillennial) without imposing a single view as the only orthodox option, consistent with the “Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation” doctrine. |
| δέω (ἔδησεν) | edēsen | to bind | Physical/legal restraint, here of Satan | bind, chain | Sovereignty of God over History / Assurance of Final Victory: Satan’s activity is entirely subject to God’s sovereign limits and timing | ချည်နှောင်ခြင်း. Risk: Medium. |
| πρώτη ἀνάστασις | prōtē anastasis | first resurrection | A resurrection distinguished from a later, “second” general resurrection | first resurrection | Resurrection (baseline Critical, extended) / Vindication of the Saints: bodily, historical resurrection in stages, not a single generic afterlife event | ပထမ ထမြောက်ခြင်း. Reuse baseline resurrection (ထမြောက်ခြင်း). Risk: Critical. Must retain baseline’s absolute prohibition on ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း (reincarnation); “first” signals sequence within a single linear, bodily resurrection program, not a first of many future rebirths. |
| Γὼγ καὶ Μαγώγ | Gōg kai Magōg | Gog and Magog | Proper names (from Ezekiel 38-39) symbolically representing the final, futile gathering of all nations against God’s people | Gog and Magog | Judgment of the Wicked / Sovereignty of God over History: the final rebellion is certain to fail | ဂေါဂနှင့်မာဂေါဂ (transliteration). Risk: Low. |
| κρίσις | krisis | judgment | Formal judicial verdict, decisive separation and sentencing | judgment | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints (central doctrine): the final, comprehensive, individual judgment of all humanity according to their deeds and their names in the book of life | တရားစီရင်ခြင်း. Risk: High. Must retain a personal God as Judge rendering a final verdict, not an impersonal karmic accounting process (cf. baseline “providence” caution against ကံ). |
| βιβλίον τῆς ζωῆς | biblion tēs zōēs | book of life | God’s record of those who belong to him, determining final destiny | book of life | Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints / Election (baseline High): God’s sovereign, personal record secures the eternal destiny of his own, in contrast to a self-compiled merit-ledger | အသက်စာစောင်. Risk: High. Must be taught in contrast to any notion of a self-accumulated merit record; inclusion is granted by God through the Lamb (cf. 13:8, 21:27), not earned through one’s own recorded good deeds. |
| θρόνος λευκὸς μέγας | thronos leukos megas | great white throne | God’s final judgment-seat, described as white (pure, righteous) and great (supreme, ultimate) | great white throne | Judgment of the Wicked / Sovereignty of God over History: the final, ultimate, unappealable seat of divine judgment | ရာဇပလ္လင်ဖြူကြီး. Risk: High. |
| δεύτερος θάνατος | deuteros thanatos | second death | (Reused; see 21:8.) | second death | Judgment of the Wicked | ဒုတိယသေခြင်း. (See 21:8.) Risk: Critical. |
Chapter 21 (verses 9–27, continuing beyond the core passage)
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| λίθος τίμιος | lithos timios | precious stone | Jeweled imagery describing the New Jerusalem’s radiant beauty | precious stone, jewel | New Heaven and New Earth: the consummated city’s beauty reflects God’s own glory | ကျောက်မျက်ရတနာ. Risk: Low. |
| πύλη / τεῖχος / θεμέλιος | pylē / teichos / themelios | gate / wall / foundation | Architectural features: twelve gates (named for the tribes of Israel) and twelve foundations (named for the Lamb’s apostles) | gate(s) / wall / foundation(s) | Unity of Jews and Gentiles / Church as Bride of Christ: the eschatological city structurally unites the Old and New Covenant peoples of God | မြို့တံခါး / မြို့ရိုး / အုတ်မြစ်. Risk: Low/Medium. |
| ἀπόστολοι τοῦ ἀρνίου | apostoloi tou arniou | apostles of the Lamb | The twelve foundational apostolic witnesses, commemorated in the city’s foundations | the twelve apostles of the Lamb | Church as Bride of Christ / Apostleship (baseline Medium, reused): the church’s foundation rests on Christ’s own commissioned, authoritative witnesses | သိုးသငယ်တော်၏ တမန်တော်များ. Reuse baseline apostle (တမန်တော်). Risk: Medium. |
| μέτρον / χρυσός | metron / chrysos | measure / gold | Measuring (the city’s vast, symbolic dimensions) and gold (its priceless, purified splendor) | measurement / gold | New Heaven and New Earth: symbolic numeric perfection and inexhaustible glory | တိုင်းတာခြင်း / ရွှေ. Risk: Low. |
| ναός (its absence) / δόξα τοῦ θεοῦ | naos / doxa tou theou | temple / glory of God | ”I saw no temple” — because God and the Lamb are themselves the city’s temple and its light | no temple / the glory of God | Worship of the Lamb / New Heaven and New Earth: unmediated divine presence replaces every prior symbol and institution of worship | ဗိမာန်တော် (မရှိတော့ခြင်း) / ဘုရားသခင်၏ ဘုန်းတော်. Reuse baseline glory (ဘုန်းတော်) and ναός (ch.11). Risk: High. |
Chapter 22
| Term | Greek (Translit.) | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Burmese Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ποταμὸς ὕδατος ζωῆς | potamos hydatos zōēs | river of the water of life | The consummated Eden-imagery river flowing from God’s own throne | river of the water of life | New Heaven and New Earth (reuse πηγή…ζωής, 21:6): the everlasting, freely-flowing source of eternal life | အသက်ရေစီးရာမြစ်. (See 21:6.) Risk: Medium. |
| ξύλον τῆς ζωῆς | xylon tēs zōēs | tree of life | (Reused, ch.2; here permanently restored, bearing continual fruit and healing leaves “for the nations”) | tree of life | New Heaven and New Earth / Unity of Jews and Gentiles: full, permanent restoration of Edenic blessing extended to all nations | အသက်ပင်. (See ch.2.) Risk: High. |
| κατάρα | katara | curse | The Genesis 3 curse on creation, here permanently removed (“no longer will there be any curse”) | curse | New Heaven and New Earth / Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil: the complete, final reversal of the Fall’s consequences | ကျိန်ခြင်း. New term, added to registry. Risk: Medium. Must be tied explicitly to the Genesis Fall-curse background so its removal signals the full undoing of sin’s effects on creation, not merely a folk-superstition curse. |
| θρόνος τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἀρνίου | thronos tou theou kai tou arniou | throne of God and of the Lamb | A single, shared throne — a striking assertion of the Lamb’s co-equal divine status with God the Father | throne of God and of the Lamb | Deity of Christ / Worship of the Lamb (central doctrine): God and the Lamb are jointly enthroned and jointly worshiped, asserting Christ’s full and equal deity | ဘုရားသခင်နှင့် သိုးသငယ်တော်၏ ရာဇပလ္လင်တော်. Risk: Critical. |
| λατρεύω | latreuō | to serve, render religious service/worship | Priestly/cultic service and devotion | serve, worship | Worship of the Lamb: the eternal, unceasing priestly service the redeemed render directly to God and the Lamb | အမှုတော်ဆောင်ကိုးကွယ်ခြင်း. Risk: High. Distinguish from ordinary secular “service”; this is worship-service rendered exclusively and eternally to God and the Lamb. |
| βασιλεύω (εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας) | basileuō | to reign, rule as king | Royal governing authority, here exercised eternally by the redeemed together with God | they will reign forever | Return and Reign of Christ (central doctrine): believers share, by grace, in Christ’s own eternal royal reign | နိုင်ငံစံတော်မူခြင်း (ထာဝရ). Reuse baseline kingdom_of_god framework. Risk: High. |
| ἔρχομαι ταχύ | erchomai tachy | I am coming quickly/soon | Christ’s repeated promise of imminent, certain return | I am coming soon | Return and Reign of Christ / Assurance of God’s Final Victory: certainty (not necessarily chronological immediacy by human reckoning) of Christ’s promised return | ငါအလျင်အမြန်ကြွလာမည်. Risk: Medium. Requires interpretive note on “soon” as certain-and-near from God’s redemptive-historical vantage point, avoiding both date-setting speculation and undermining the reality of the promise. |
| Ἀμήν | Amēn | truly, so be it | A fixed affirmation of certainty/agreement | Amen | Sovereignty of God over History: the book’s closing seal of certainty over all that has been revealed | အာမင် (established transliteration, per baseline system prompt). Risk: Low. |
| Ἔρχου, κύριε Ἰησοῦ | Erchou, kyrie Iēsou | Come, Lord Jesus | The church’s own answering prayer of longing for Christ’s return (Aramaic equivalent: Maranatha) | Come, Lord Jesus | Perseverance and Faithful Witness / Assurance of God’s Final Victory: the fitting posture of the persecuted, waiting church is active longing prayer, not passive resignation | သခင်ယေရှု၊ ကြွလာတော်မူပါ. Reuse baseline lord (သခင်) and jesus (ယေရှု). Risk: High. Must be rendered with the same warmth and register as the Romans baseline’s “Abba, Father” treatment (8:15) — an intimate, faith-filled cry, not a formal liturgical formula alone. |
End of full-book semantic analysis. Every chapter of Revelation (1–22) has been surveyed; no chapter was found to introduce zero new load-bearing theological vocabulary, given the density of Revelation’s symbolic register — where a chapter’s terms substantially reuse an earlier chapter’s vocabulary (e.g., ch. 14’s Lamb, ch. 15’s bowls, ch. 21b’s temple/glory), this is noted explicitly with a cross-reference rather than a duplicated full entry.
