Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — Gospel of John → Burmese Translation Requirements

Why it matters

The Gospel of John is the single most theologically concentrated book in the New Testament for a Burmese Buddhist-majority audience: it makes Christ’s full deity, exclusive Lordship, and the necessity of Spirit-wrought new birth explicit in ways Romans does not require in the same density. John 3:1–21 — this curriculum’s core passage — packs the single highest cumulative mistranslation risk of the whole Gospel into 21 verses, because it is the one passage where the source text itself uses birth/rebirth language to describe salvation, placing it in direct, intuitive collision with the Theravada Buddhist rebirth (သံသရာ) framework that shapes ordinary Burmese religious instinct more than almost any other single doctrine surveyed. Every rendering decision documented in this Phase 1 package exists to prevent John’s gospel of a personal, once-for-all, grace-given new life from being silently absorbed into a karmic, cyclical, or self-attained framework.

Key findings

  • 96 terms are now fixed in the John-curriculum translation_memory.json: 36 inherited exactly from the Romans baseline (unchanged) and 60 new terms introduced by John’s own vocabulary (the Word, the seven “I Am” statements, the Paraclete, “It is finished,” and others).
  • Of these 96 terms, 63 are Critical or High risk (25 Critical + 38 High) and require mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence; 29 are Medium risk (native-speaker review); 4 are Low risk (automated review only).
  • 35 curriculum doctrines are tracked in the doctrine risk registry; 27 are Critical or High tier (12 Critical + 15 High) requiring theologian oversight, 8 are Medium tier requiring native-speaker review, and none are Low tier — a materially higher theologian-review burden than the Romans baseline carried.
  • The single highest-risk item in the entire package is John 3:3/3:7’s “born again/from above” (γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν): the intuitive Burmese default (ပြန်လည်မွေးဖွားခြင်း, rebirth into a new samsaric existence) is the precise doctrinal inverse of the intended once-for-all, Spirit-wrought, this-life transformation — a collision more acute than even the already-Critical “resurrection” term, because this passage speaks of birth directly.
  • Four documented Jehovah’s Witnesses New World Translation renderings (John 1:1c, 8:58, 10:30, 20:28) are now explicitly forbidden and flagged as automatic escalation triggers, since John is this group’s single most contested book.
  • A newly required doctrine absent from the Romans package — the Holy Spirit as Counselor/Paraclete — carries a uniquely bidirectional risk: over-personalization toward a folk-venerated nat-spirit helper, or de-personalization toward a self-generated psychological calm consistent with anatta. No other doctrine in either curriculum carries risk in two opposite directions simultaneously.

Risks

  • Assimilation, not rejection: For the Deity of Christ, the “I Am” statements, and the Unity of the Father and the Son, the dominant risk is not that Burmese Buddhist readers will reject these claims outright, but that they will quietly absorb them into existing categories (a merit-ascended Brahma-realm deity; one valid teaching among many; non-dual monistic unity) that neutralize exclusivity without appearing to contradict it.
  • Merit-economy collision: “It is finished” (19:30) and “grace and truth” (1:14–17) both confront the pervasive, daily-practiced Burmese Buddhist merit economy (ကုသိုလ်) more directly and more frequently than Romans’s single-doctrine treatment of grace.
  • Grammatical gaps: Burmese has no perfect tense (weakening John 3:18’s “already judged”) and cannot reproduce the ἄνωθεν, πνεῦμα (wind/Spirit), or ἀγαπάω/φιλέω wordplays lexically — all four require mandatory standing translator notes rather than word-choice solutions.
  • Sabbath/Uposatha collision recurs across four separate John passages (5, 7, 9, 19), compounding rather than one-time risk if fencing notes are not reapplied at each occurrence.

Opportunities

  • John’s own in-line glosses (1:41’s “Messiah, which means Christ”; 9:2–3’s explicit rejection of a suffering-equals-sin inference) mean the source text itself does some of the doctrinal fencing work — translators should lean on these self-interpreting moments rather than relying solely on external notes.
  • John’s Samaritan narrative (ch. 4) offers a built-in, textually grounded opportunity to address Myanmar’s own majority-Burman/minority-ethnic tensions without requiring an imported illustration.
  • The core passage’s own resolution (new birth as a gift “from above,” 3:5–8) gives translators a textually explicit off-ramp from the rebirth-cycle misreading, if the ἄνωθεν qualifier is consistently supplied.
  1. Lock the renderings of John 1:1, 3:16, 3:3/3:7, 8:58, 10:30, 14:6, 19:30, 20:28, and 20:31 at first Phase 2 use and reuse identically across every lesson document, per the fixed-rendering rule extended in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
  2. Route all 63 Critical/High terms and 27 Critical/High doctrines through mandatory human theologian review before any segment is approved; route the 29 Medium terms and 8 Medium doctrines through native-speaker review.
  3. Treat John 3:1–21 as the mandatory pilot batch validating that mandatory annotation discipline (I AM notes, born-again notes, wind/Spirit pun notes) survives into derivative lesson material before scaling to the remaining twenty chapters.
  4. Enforce the four Watchtower-pattern exclusions as automatic escalation triggers independent of a segment’s baseline risk tier.
  5. Confirm the YouVersion version ID for the Myanmar Standard Bible before generating any published JHN.* hyperlink.
