Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — 2 Corinthians (Full Book)

Methodology

This analysis proceeds in two parts, per PRD Phase 1 Step 1:

  • Part A treats the core passage (2 Corinthians 5:11–21) verse by verse. Every load-bearing term receives: original Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants across major translations, contextual theological meaning in this passage, and the risk assessment for rendering into Burmese.
  • Part B treats every chapter of 2 Corinthians, first to last, at the level of load-bearing theological terms, using the same field set. Where a chapter’s terms have already been fully treated in Part A or in an earlier chapter, this is stated explicitly rather than repeated in full, per the “no new vocabulary” instruction — but 2 Corinthians is theologically dense throughout, and in practice every chapter contributes at least some new load-bearing vocabulary.

Baseline reuse rule: Any term already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json MUST use the exact recorded Burmese rendering. Such terms are marked [BASELINE REUSE] below, with the exact string repeated for verification. New terms not present in the Romans baseline are marked [NEW TERM] and are proposed here for the first time in this curriculum; final adjudication occurs in 08_core_glossary.md and subsequent Phase 1 steps.

Greek text follows the standard critical (NA28/UBS5) wording as commonly represented in interlinear tools; transliteration follows conventional academic Koine transliteration.

Part A — Core Passage: 2 Corinthians 5:11–21 (Verse by Verse)

5:11 — “Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest to God, and I hope also in your consciences.”

FieldContent
Termfear of the Lord
Originalφόβον τοῦ Κυρίου
Transliterationphobon tou Kyriou
Literal meaning”the fear/dread of the Lord”
Semantic rangeReverent awe before a superior; terror; respectful submission to authority
English variants”fear of the Lord” (ESV, KJV, NASB), “reverence for the Lord” (NLT)
Contextual meaningPaul’s motive for ministry: sober awareness of final accountability before Christ (cf. 5:10, the judgment seat), producing reverent urgency, not craven terror
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] High. Render သခင်ဘုရားကို ကြောက်ရွံ့ရိုသေခြင်း (thakhin-phayar ko kyauk-ywan yo-thay-chin). Risk: generic ကြောက်ရွံ့ခြင်း (fear) alone evokes fear of nats, ghosts, or karmic retribution common in Burmese folk religion. Must be qualified as reverent, relational awe before the personal Lord (သခင်, baseline term), not superstitious dread of an impersonal spiritual force.
FieldContent
Termpersuade
Originalπείθομεν
Transliterationpeithomen
Literal meaning”we persuade / we seek to win over”
Semantic rangeTo convince by argument or appeal; to win someone’s confidence
English variants”persuade” (ESV, NASB, KJV), “try to persuade” (NIV)
Contextual meaningPaul’s apostolic appeal to the Corinthians and to outsiders, contrasted with manipulative rhetoric
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Low. ဖျောင်းဖျစေခြင်း / စိတ်ဝင်စားအောင်ပြောဆိုခြင်း. Minor risk only; keep distinct from persuasive rhetoric for personal gain (associated with itinerant fortune-tellers or traveling preachers seeking donations).
FieldContent
Termmade manifest
Originalπεφανερώμεθα
Transliterationpephanerōmetha
Literal meaning”we have been made visible / laid open”
Semantic rangeTo disclose, reveal, bring into open view
English variants”we are made manifest” (KJV, NASB), “what we are is plain” (ESV), “we are well known” (NIV, contextual softening)
Contextual meaningPaul’s motives and conduct lie fully exposed before God’s evaluation, not hidden self-promotion
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Medium. ထင်ရှားစေခြင်း/ဖွင့်ပြခြင်း. Low collision risk; ensure it is not rendered merely as “famous/well-known” (popular reputation), which loses the sense of transparency before God specifically.
FieldContent
Termconscience
Originalσυνειδήσεσιν
Transliterationsyneidēsesin
Literal meaning”co-knowledge; knowing-together (with oneself)“
Semantic rangeMoral self-awareness; the inner faculty that approves or accuses one’s own actions
English variants”conscience” (all major versions)
Contextual meaningPaul appeals to the Corinthians’ own inner moral discernment to confirm his sincerity
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Medium. အသိစိတ် (a-thi-seit). Established, well-understood Burmese term for moral conscience; low doctrinal collision, but note it must not be reduced to social shame-avoidance (a strong cultural motivator in Burmese honor culture) — biblical conscience answers to God, not merely to social opinion.

5:12 — “For we are not again commending ourselves to you, but are giving you cause to boast on our behalf, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart.”

FieldContent
Termcommend
Originalσυνιστάνομεν
Transliterationsynistanomen
Literal meaning”to place together with; to introduce favorably”
Semantic rangeTo recommend, vouch for, establish credibility
English variants”commend” (ESV, KJV, NASB), “recommending” (NIV)
Contextual meaningContrasts genuine apostolic credibility (established by God and by transformed lives) with self-promotion
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Medium. ထောက်ခံခြင်း (htaukkhan-chin). Watch for collision with the practice of seeking a senior monk’s or teacher’s public endorsement as a mark of spiritual status; Paul’s point is that true commendation comes from God (cf. 3:1; 10:18), not human endorsement-seeking.
FieldContent
Termboast
Originalκαύχημα
Transliterationkauchēma
Literal meaning”a boast, ground for boasting”
Semantic rangePride, glorying, a matter for legitimate or illegitimate pride
English variants”boast” (most versions), “pride” (NIV alt.)
Contextual meaningThe Corinthians’ rightful confidence in Paul’s genuine ministry, versus opponents’ boasting in externals
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Medium. ကြွားဝါခြင်း / ဝါကြွားခြင်း (kyarwar-chin). See fuller treatment at chs. 10–12 below; here note that boasting itself is not condemned outright but must be “in the Lord,” a distinction requiring careful contextual framing.
FieldContent
Termoutward appearance
Originalπρόσωπον
Transliterationprosōpon
Literal meaning”face; outward appearance”
Semantic rangeFace, presence, external show, social status marker
English variants”outward appearance” (ESV, NASB), “what is seen” (NIV)
Contextual meaningSuperficial credentials (rhetorical polish, letters of recommendation, social standing) opposed to inward, Spirit-wrought reality
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Low. အပြင်အသွင်/မျက်နှာသာ. Low collision; straightforward external/internal contrast.

5:13 — “For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; or if we are of sound mind, it is for you.”

FieldContent
Termbeside ourselves / of sound mind
Originalἐξέστημεν / σωφρονοῦμεν
Transliterationexestēmen / sōphronoumen
Literal meaning”we stood outside (ourselves)” / “we think soundly / self-controlled”
Semantic rangeEcstatic, overwhelmed devotion vs. sober, self-possessed reasoning
English variants”beside ourselves…in our right mind” (ESV, NASB), “out of our mind…are sane” (NIV)
Contextual meaningPaul’s zeal toward God (however it may appear to outsiders) and his sober rationality toward the church are both, in their proper sphere, for others’ good
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Low-Medium. စိတ်လွန်ကူးခြင်း (ecstatic devotion) / စိတ်ချုပ်တည်ငြိမ်ခြင်း (sound-mindedness). Minor risk of confusion with trance/spirit-possession states in Burmese folk-spiritist practice (nat-worship trance dancing); a translator note may be needed to clarify this is zealous devotion to God, not spirit possession.

5:14 — “For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died.”

FieldContent
Termlove of Christ
Originalἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Transliterationhē agapē tou Christou
Literal meaning”the love of Christ”
Semantic rangeChrist’s self-giving love for believers (objective genitive: love Christ has), or believers’ love for Christ (subjective genitive) — context favors the former
English variants”the love of Christ” (all major versions)
Contextual meaningChrist’s sacrificial love, demonstrated at the cross, is the compelling motive-force of Paul’s entire ministry
Burmese risk[NEW TERM structurally, reuses baseline “love” vocabulary where present] Medium. ခရစ်တော်၏မေတ္တာတော်. Note: မေတ္တာ (metta) is a major Buddhist virtue term (loving-kindness cultivated through meditation practice extended impartially to all beings). Must be taught as Christ’s specific, historical, self-sacrificial love demonstrated at the cross for particular sinners, not a cultivated impersonal benevolence radiated through meditative discipline.
FieldContent
Termcontrols / compels
Originalσυνέχει
Transliterationsynechei
Literal meaning”holds together, constrains, hems in”
Semantic rangeTo press on all sides, constrain, control, urge forward
English variants”controls us” (ESV, NIV), “compels us” (NASB), “constraineth us” (KJV)
Contextual meaningChrist’s love is the singular, all-encompassing motivating force behind Paul’s apostolic labor
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Low. တွန်းအားပေးခြင်း/ထိန်းချုပ်ခြင်း. Low collision risk.
FieldContent
Termdied for all
Originalεἷς ὑπὲρ πάντων ἀπέθανεν
Transliterationheis hyper pantōn apethanen
Literal meaning”one died on behalf of all”
Semantic rangeSubstitutionary, representative death for the benefit of others
English variants”one has died for all” (ESV), “one died for all” (NIV, NASB)
  | Contextual meaning | Christ's death is representative and substitutionary — the ground for the "died with him" logic that follows |

| Burmese risk | [Connects to baseline resurrection/salvation doctrine cluster] Critical. Same doctrinal weight as Romans’ Critical-tier atonement language; must clearly preserve substitutionary “on behalf of” (အတွက်/ကိုယ်စား), not merely “died along with” or “died like.” |

5:15 — “and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who died and was raised for them.”

FieldContent
Termlive for themselves / for him
Originalζῶσιν ἑαυτοῖς / τῷ ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν ἀποθανόντι καὶ ἐγερθέντι
Transliterationzōsin heautois / tō hyper autōn apothanonti kai egerthenti
Literal meaning”live to/for themselves” / “to the one who died and was raised on their behalf”
Semantic rangeSelf-oriented existence versus Christ-oriented existence
English variants”no longer live for themselves but for him” (ESV, NIV, NASB)
Contextual meaningThe believer’s whole existential orientation is reoriented by Christ’s death and resurrection: cf. Romans 6’s “dead to sin, alive to God” pattern
Burmese risk[BASELINE REUSE — resurrection] Critical. “was raised” = ထမြောက်ခြင်း (hta-myauk-chin), exactly as recorded. NEVER ပဋိသန္ဓေတည်ခြင်း (rebirth) or ပြန်လည်မွေးဖွားခြင်း. This is Christ’s own historical, bodily resurrection, the basis for the believer’s reoriented life — not a cyclical rebirth pattern.

5:16 — “From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer.”

FieldContent
Termaccording to the flesh
Originalκατὰ σάρκα
Transliterationkata sarka
Literal meaning”according to flesh”
Semantic rangeBy external, human, worldly standards of evaluation; sometimes ethnic/physical descent (cf. Romans 1:3 “seed of David according to the flesh,” a baseline term); sometimes morally negative (sinful human nature)
English variants”according to the flesh” (ESV, NASB, KJV), “from a worldly point of view” (NIV)
Contextual meaningPaul renounces evaluating people (and even Christ himself, pre-resurrection) by external, merely human categories of status, ethnicity, or appearance
Burmese risk[NEW TERM, related to baseline “incarnation” ဇာတိ vocabulary] Medium. ဇာတိအလိုအရ (zarti-a-lo-a-ya). Reuses the ဇာတိ root already anchored by လူ့ဇာတိခံယူခြင်း (incarnation). Risk: ဇာတိ can also evoke “past-life existence” in Buddhist usage (a previous ဘဝ/zati in the rebirth chain); the phrase must be clearly bounded to mean “by external/human standards,” not “in a previous incarnation.”

5:17 — “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

FieldContent
Termin Christ
Originalἐν Χριστῷ
Transliterationen Christō
Literal meaning”in Christ”
Semantic rangeUnion with Christ — incorporation into his death, resurrection, and risen life
English variants”in Christ” (all major versions)
Contextual meaningThe controlling category for all Pauline soteriology; the condition for becoming a new creation
Burmese risk[Extends baseline “christian_identity_in_christ” doctrine] High. ခရစ်တော်၌ (Khayitto-hnyi). Consistent with Romans usage; must not be diluted to “following Christ’s teaching” but retained as organic spiritual union.
FieldContent
Termnew creation
Originalκαινὴ κτίσις
Transliterationkainē ktisis
Literal meaning”new creation / new creature”
Semantic rangeA newly created reality; can refer to the individual believer or to the inaugurated new-creation order
English variants”new creation” (ESV, NIV, NASB), “new creature” (KJV)
Contextual meaningThe believer’s decisive, God-wrought transformation — not moral self-improvement but a new act of creation parallel to Genesis 1
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Critical. Render ဖန်ဆင်းခြင်းအသစ် (phan-hsin-chin a-thit) — “new creation,” using ဖန်ဆင်း (create), the verb already reserved in Myanmar Bible usage for God’s original creative act (Genesis), never a generic word for change. CRITICAL RISK: must not be rendered with any term suggesting a favorable rebirth (fortunate next existence in samsara) or a self-cultivated inner transformation (as in meditative attainment of a “purified mind”). This is a new act of divine creation ex nihilo in the moral-spiritual sense, once for all, not a step along a karmic continuum.
FieldContent
Termold has passed away / new has come
Originalτὰ ἀρχαῖα παρῆλθεν, ἰδοὺ γέγονεν καινά
Transliterationta archaia parēlthen, idou gegonen kaina
Literal meaning”the old things passed by; behold, new things have come to be”
Semantic rangeDecisive, completed transition from an old order/identity to a new one
English variants”the old has passed away; the new has come” (ESV, NIV)
Contextual meaningTotal, not partial, reorientation of identity and standing before God
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Medium. ဟောင်းသောအရာများကုန်ဆုံးပြီ၊ အသစ်သောအရာများသည် ရောက်ရှိပြီ။ Low collision if kept plainly declarative; avoid language suggesting gradual accumulation (merit accruing over time) rather than a decisive, completed change of status.

5:18 — “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;“

FieldContent
Termreconciled (us to himself)
Originalκαταλλάξαντος ἡμᾶς ἑαυτῷ
Transliterationkatallaxantos hēmas heautō
Literal meaning”having exchanged/changed us [into favor] with himself” (root ἀλλάσσω, “to change, exchange”)
Semantic rangeTo restore to friendship/right relationship after enmity; to change a relationship from hostility to peace
English variants”reconciled” (all major versions)
Contextual meaningGod himself is the initiating agent who removes the enmity caused by sin and restores relationship — this is the doctrinal center of the passage
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Critical. Render သင့်မြတ်စေတော်မူ (thin-myat-say-taw-mu), from the established Myanmar Bible verb သင့်မြတ်ခြင်း (“to be reconciled, brought into right/harmonious relationship”). CRITICAL RISK: must be taught as God’s own initiative to remove personal enmity between himself and sinners through Christ’s finished work — not a mutual negotiation, not a ritual pacification of offended spirits (as in nat-propitiation practices), and not humanity’s own effort to placate an angry deity. God is the subject who reconciles; humanity is the object reconciled.
FieldContent
Termministry of reconciliation
Originalτὴν διακονίαν τῆς καταλλαγῆς
Transliterationtēn diakonian tēs katallagēs
Literal meaning”the service/ministry of the reconciliation”
Semantic rangeThe delegated task of proclaiming and mediating (not accomplishing) reconciliation already secured by Christ
English variants”ministry of reconciliation” (all major versions)
Contextual meaningThe apostolic and, by extension, every believer’s commissioned task of announcing what God has already accomplished
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] Critical. သင့်မြတ်ခြင်း၏အမှုတော် (thin-myat-chin i a-hmu-taw). Must be clearly distinguished from priestly or shamanic mediation that itself effects reconciliation with a deity or spirit through ritual action; here the minister proclaims a reconciliation God has already accomplished through Christ, not one the minister performs.

5:19 — “that is, God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.”

FieldContent
TermGod was in Christ reconciling
OriginalΘεὸς ἦν ἐν Χριστῷ κόσμον καταλλάσσων ἑαυτῷ
TransliterationTheos ēn en Christō kosmon katallassōn heautō
Literal meaning”God was, in Christ, reconciling the world to himself”
Semantic range(see above); here explicitly identifies Christ as the very locus of God’s own reconciling activity
English variants”God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ” (NIV), “God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself” (ESV, NASB)
Contextual meaningAffirms both the deity of Christ (God himself acting) and the incarnation (in Christ) as the means of cosmic reconciliation
Burmese risk[Combines baseline “god,” “jesus,” “incarnation” Critical terms with NEW “reconciliation” term] Critical. All component terms are Critical risk individually; the combined clause must preserve that God himself, not a lesser intermediary, was personally present and active in Christ. Any rendering implying Christ as a separate, lesser mediator (akin to a bodhisattva or an intercessory nat) undermines the deity-of-Christ doctrine already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline.
FieldContent
Termnot counting their trespasses against them
Originalμὴ λογιζόμενος αὐτοῖς τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν
Transliterationmē logizomenos autois ta paraptōmata autōn
Literal meaning”not reckoning/crediting to them their trespasses”
Semantic rangeλογίζομαι = to calculate, credit, reckon to one’s account (the same verb underlying “imputed righteousness,” a baseline Critical term, used here in the negative — not-crediting sin)
English variants”not counting their trespasses against them” (ESV, NIV), “not imputing their transgressions” (NASB alt.)
Contextual meaningThe forensic, accounting-ledger logic of imputation (cf. baseline imputed_righteousness) is applied here to the non-imputation of sin — the negative counterpart to righteousness being credited
Burmese risk[Extends baseline imputed_righteousness term] Critical. Use the same verb root already fixed in baseline: မှတ်တော်မူခြင်း (hmat-taw-mu-chin, “to credit/reckon”), negated: အပြစ်များကို မှတ်တော်မမူ (a-pyit-myar ko hmat-taw-ma-mu). Must preserve the forensic accounting sense already established for imputed_righteousness — sins are not merely overlooked casually, but are legally not charged to the sinner’s account, because Christ bore them (v.21).
FieldContent
Termmessage/word of reconciliation
Originalτὸν λόγον τῆς καταλλαγῆς
Transliterationton logon tēs katallagēs
Literal meaning”the word of the reconciliation”
Semantic rangeThe content of the gospel proclamation, specifically framed as reconciliation
English variants”message of reconciliation” (ESV, NIV), “word of reconciliation” (NASB)
Contextual meaningIdentifies reconciliation as the summary content of gospel preaching entrusted to believers
Burmese risk[NEW TERM, combines with baseline “gospel”] High. သင့်မြတ်ခြင်းဆိုင်ရာ နှုတ်ကပတ်တော် / သတင်းစကား. Should be taught alongside သတင်းကောင်း (baseline gospel term) as one and the same proclamation, not two separate messages.

5:20 — “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”

FieldContent
Termambassadors
Originalπρεσβεύομεν
Transliterationpresbeuomen
Literal meaning”we act as ambassadors/envoys” (from πρέσβυς, elder/envoy)
Semantic rangeTo serve as an official representative empowered to speak on behalf of a sovereign
English variants”ambassadors” (ESV, NIV, NASB, KJV)
Contextual meaningPaul (and by extension every believer proclaiming the gospel) carries delegated authority to speak Christ’s own appeal to the world
Burmese risk[NEW TERM] High. သံတမန် (thantaman) — the standard modern Burmese word for a diplomatic ambassador/envoy. Distinct from တမန်တော် (baseline “apostle,” a directly commissioned sent-one with foundational church authority); သံတမန် conveys the specific image of representing a sovereign’s message to a foreign party, which fits this verse’s diplomatic metaphor well. Translator note recommended to distinguish the two terms so learners do not conflate general Christian gospel-bearing with the foundational apostolic office.
FieldContent
Termbe reconciled to God
Originalκαταλλάγητε τῷ Θεῷ
Transliterationkatallagēte tō Theō
Literal meaning”be reconciled to God” (passive imperative)
Semantic rangeAn appeal to receive, by faith, the reconciliation God has already accomplished — not to achieve it
English variants”be reconciled to God” (all major versions)
Contextual meaningThe passive voice is theologically significant: hearers are urged to receive a finished reconciliation, not to perform one
Burmese risk[Extends the Critical “reconciled” term above] Critical. သင့်မြတ်သူများဖြစ်ကြပါလော့ / ဘုရားသခင်နှင့် သင့်မြတ်ကြပါလော့ (passive/receptive imperative). Must preserve the passive sense — the hearer is being urged to accept a reconciliation God has already achieved through Christ, not instructed to perform ritual acts, merit-making, or self-purification in order to earn reconciliation.

5:21 — “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

FieldContent
Termmade him to be sin
Originalτὸν μὴ γνόντα ἁμαρτίαν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἁμαρτίαν ἐποίησεν
Transliterationton mē gnonta hamartian hyper hēmōn hamartian epoiēsen
Literal meaning”the one not having known sin, he made [to be] sin on our behalf”
Semantic rangeἁμαρτία (baseline “sin,” Critical); here used of Christ himself bearing the legal/representative status of “sin” for others, not becoming personally sinful
English variants”made him to be sin” (ESV, NASB), “made him who had no sin to be sin for us” (NIV)
Contextual meaningSubstitutionary atonement: the sinless Christ representatively bears the judicial status and penalty of sin so that believers may receive righteousness — the theological center of the whole passage
Burmese risk[BASELINE REUSE — sin: အပြစ်] Critical. Must retain the paradox precisely: Christ, who committed no အပြစ် (sin), was made အပြစ် (sin) “for us” (ငါတို့အတွက်/ကိုယ်စား). Any softening to “was punished for sin” or “took on the consequences of sin” loses Paul’s sharper substitutionary language. Requires theologian review and a translator note, per baseline atonement/propitiation escalation rule (2 Cor 3:25-parallel doctrine).
FieldContent
Termthe righteousness of God
Originalδικαιοσύνη Θεοῦ
Transliterationdikaiosynē Theou
Literal meaning”righteousness of God”
Semantic rangeGod’s own righteous standing, credited to (not achieved by) the believer united to Christ
English variants”the righteousness of God” (all major versions)
Contextual meaningThe positive counterpart to v.21a: believers receive, by virtue of union with Christ, the very righteousness that belongs to God himself
Burmese risk[BASELINE REUSE] Critical. Exactly ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်း (pyaungmat-chin), as recorded in the Romans translation memory. This is the same forensic, credited righteousness taught throughout Romans (esp. Romans 3–4); the 2 Corinthians occurrence must be translated identically for curriculum-wide consistency, never rendered as accumulated merit (ကုသိုလ်ကံ, already forbidden).

Part B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book

Chapter 1 — Comfort in Suffering; Apostolic Sincerity; God’s Faithful Promises

TermOriginalTranslit.LiteralSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaningBurmese rendering & risk

Combine with baseline အဖ (father, Critical) exactly; extend with ကရုဏာ (compassion/mercy). Note: ကရုဏာ is also a major Buddhist virtue (compassion cultivated toward all beings); must be anchored as a personal Father’s disposition toward his own children, not an impersonal cultivated virtue.
comfort/consolationπαράκλησιςparaklēsiscalling alongside; consolationcomfort, encouragement, appeal”comfort,” “consolation,” “encouragement”God’s active, relational comforting of the afflicted, which overflows into ministry to others (1:3-7)[NEW TERM] High. နှစ်သိမ့်ခြင်း (nhait-thate-chin). Central term for the doctrine “Suffering and Comfort in Ministry.” Must convey God’s own personal, relational consoling presence — not a Buddhist-style equanimity achieved by detaching from desire, nor mere passage-of-time healing.
affliction/sufferingθλῖψιςthlipsispressure, crushingtrouble, distress, persecution-related hardship”affliction,” “trouble,” “suffering”Paul’s apostolic sufferings, productive of comfort shared with others, and of hope[NEW TERM] High (borderline Critical). ဆင်းရဲဒုက္ခ (sin-yay douk-kha). MAJOR CULTURAL COLLISION: ဒုက္ခ (dukkha) is the technical term for the First Noble Truth of Theravada Buddhism — that all conditioned existence is inherently unsatisfactory/suffering, to be escaped through detachment and the Eightfold Path. Paul’s θλῖψις is temporary, purposeful, God-permitted hardship endured in hope and relationship, productive of comfort and future glory — not an existential condition to be escaped through non-attachment. Every occurrence should carry a translator note distinguishing biblical affliction (relational, hope-producing, temporary) from dukkha (existential, detachment-resolved, cyclical).
sufferings of Christτὰ παθήματα τοῦ Χριστοῦta pathēmata tou Christouthe sufferings of ChristChrist’s own historical sufferings, shared derivatively by believers”sufferings of Christ”Believers’ afflictions are joined typologically to Christ’s own sufferings[NEW TERM] High. ခရစ်တော်၏ ဆင်းရဲဒုက္ခများ. Same collision note as above; additionally must not be confused with the Buddha’s own renunciatory suffering narratives (e.g., ascetic self-mortification prior to enlightenment).
seal / guarantee (down payment)σφραγίζω / ὁ ἀρραβώνsphragizō / ho arrabōnto seal / earnest-money, pledgemark of ownership/authenticity; a partial payment guaranteeing the rest”sealed us,” “gave us the Spirit as a guarantee/deposit”The Holy Spirit as God’s own guarantee of the believer’s future, full inheritance[Extends BASELINE holy_spirit] High. တံဆိပ်ခတ်တော်မူ (sealed) / အာမခံအဖြစ် ပေးအပ်တော်မူ (given as a guarantee). Holy Spirit remains သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော် exactly. Risk: guarantee/pledge language must not be read as a negotiable, revocable contract (as in commercial ငွေစေ့စပ် arrangements), but as God’s own unbreakable assurance.
promiseἐπαγγελίαepangeliapromise, announcementGod’s covenantal promises, all fulfilled in Christ”promise,” “promises""All the promises of God find their Yes in him” (1:20)[NEW TERM] Medium. ကတိတော် (kati-taw). Connects to baseline covenant/fulfillment-of-prophecy doctrines; low collision, but requires OT background teaching for hearers unfamiliar with the promise-fulfillment narrative arc.

Chapter 2 — Forgiveness, Sincerity, the Fragrance of Christ

TermOriginalTranslit.LiteralSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaningBurmese rendering & risk
forgiveχαρίζομαιcharizomaito grant freely, forgiveto extend grace-based pardon”forgive”Corporate forgiveness of the offending member, modeling grace[Root shares baseline “grace” χάρις] High. ခွင့်လွှတ်ခြင်း (khwin-hlut-chin), grounded in ကျေးဇူးတော် (grace). Must retain the grace-basis of forgiveness — pardon freely extended, not earned back through penance or restored merit.
sincerityεἰλικρίνειαeilikrineiapure, tested by sunlight (lit. “judged in the light”)genuineness, freedom from mixed motive”sincerity,” “sincere”Paul’s motives as transparent before God, unlike deceptive rival teachers[NEW TERM] Medium. ရိုးဖြောင့်ခြင်း (yo-phyaung-chin). Central to the “Sincerity and Apostolic Authority” doctrine; low collision, but should not be flattened to mere “honesty” — it carries the sense of motives that would hold up under divine scrutiny.

Watch collision with incense-and-flower offerings (ပန်းနံ့သာ ပူဇော်ခြင်း) presented to Buddha images or nats; clarify this is a metaphor for the effect of gospel proclamation on hearers, not a literal ritual offering.

Chapter 3 — New Covenant, Letter and Spirit, Unveiled Glory

TermOriginalTranslit.LiteralSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaningBurmese rendering & risk
new covenantδιαθήκη καινήdiathēkē kainēnew covenantthe covenant inaugurated by Christ’s blood, replacing/fulfilling the Mosaic covenant”new covenant”Central doctrine: “The New Covenant versus the Old”[Extends BASELINE covenant: ပဋိညာဉ်] Critical. ပဋိညာဉ်သစ် (padi-nyin-thit). Must be taught alongside ပညတ်တရား (baseline “law”) as the covenant that fulfills, not merely supplements, the old; requires OT background as in the Romans Davidic Covenant doctrine notes.
letter (of the law)γράμμαgrammaa written letter/characterthe written Mosaic code, apart from the Spirit’s life-giving work”the letter,” “what is written""The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life” (3:6) — legalistic law-keeping apart from the Spirit brings condemnation[NEW TERM] High. စာလုံး (sa-lone). Paired contrast term with the Spirit (သန့်ရှင်းသောဝိညာဉ်တော်, baseline, reused exactly). Risk: must not collapse into a wholesale rejection of Scripture’s written form; the contrast is code-keeping without the Spirit versus Spirit-empowered new-covenant life.
ministry of the Spiritδιακονία τοῦ πνεύματοςdiakonia tou pneumatosservice of the SpiritNew covenant ministry empowered by and centered on the Holy Spirit”ministry of the Spirit”Contrasts Moses’ fading, letter-based ministry with the enduring, Spirit-empowered new-covenant ministry[BASELINE REUSE holy_spirit + NEW “ministry”] High. ဝိညာဉ်တော်၏ အမှုတော်.
veilκάλυμμαkalymmacovering, veilMoses’ literal veil (Exodus 34) and its typological meaning: partial, fading revelation”veil”Israel’s hardened perception of the old covenant’s fading glory, removed only in Christ[NEW TERM] Medium. မျက်နှာဖုံး (myet-nha-phon). Requires OT narrative background (Moses and the veiled face) for hearers with low OT literacy, per translation requirements’ target audience note.
glory (fading / surpassing)δόξαdoxaglory, radiance, honorGod’s manifest radiant presence; here contrasting the fading glory of the old covenant with the surpassing, permanent glory of the new”glory”The old covenant’s real but fading glory versus the new covenant’s greater and permanent glory[BASELINE REUSE] High. ဘုန်းတော် exactly, per Romans baseline notes about ambiguity with merit-power (ဘုန်းကံ); reinforce that this is God’s own inherent radiant glory unveiled fully in the new covenant, not merit accrued by Moses or by law-observance.
transformedμεταμορφούμεθαmetamorphoumethabeing transformed, changed in formprogressive, Spirit-wrought transformation into Christ’s likeness”are being transformed,” “are transfigured”Believers, beholding Christ’s glory, are progressively conformed to his image by the Spirit (3:18)[NEW TERM] High. ပြောင်းလဲခြင်း (pyaunglai-chin). Risk: distinguish sharply from Buddhist meditative “transformation of mind” achieved through one’s own disciplined practice (e.g., insight meditation reshaping consciousness); here transformation is the Spirit’s own ongoing work upon the believer beholding Christ, continuous with the baseline sanctification doctrine (သန့်ရှင်းခြင်း).
freedomἐλευθερίαeleutheriafreedom, libertyfreedom from the veiled, condemning old-covenant ministry, granted “where the Spirit of the Lord is” (3:17)“freedom,” “liberty”New-covenant freedom in the Spirit, contrasted with slavery under the letter[NEW TERM] Medium. လွတ်လပ်ခြင်း (lut-lut-chin). Low-medium collision; ensure not confused with the rejected salvation-alternative လွတ်မြောက်ခြင်း (liberation, already flagged as a rejected alternative for “salvation” in the baseline) — here it specifically names Spirit-given freedom from law’s condemnation, a related but distinct nuance requiring care in context.

Risk: avoid resonance with a body/soul dualism resembling Buddhist anatta (no-self) analysis of aggregates; the “inner man” here is the same single person being renewed by the Spirit, not evidence of an illusory self.
eternal weight of gloryαἰώνιον βάρος δόξηςaiōnion baros doxēseternal weight of glorythe surpassing, imperishable glory awaiting believers, far outweighing present affliction”eternal weight of glory”Present θλῖψις (affliction) is “light” and “momentary” compared to future glory — a key comfort-in-suffering statement[BASELINE REUSE glory + NEW “weight”] High. ထာဝရဘုန်းတော်၏အလေးချိန်. Low-medium collision; must connect to baseline resurrection doctrine (ထမြောက်ခြင်း) — this is not a soul discarding a body to be reborn elsewhere, but awaiting a future resurrected body.
groanστενάζομενstenazomenwe groanlonging, burdened sighing”we groan,” “we sigh”Believers’ present longing for the future resurrection body (5:2,4)[NEW TERM] Low. ညည်းတွားခြင်း.

Must be distinguished from the karmic weighing/accounting metaphors familiar in Burmese Buddhist moral imagination (a personal ledger of merit and demerit determining rebirth); this is Christ’s own personal, final evaluation of believers’ service, not an impersonal karmic tally determining one’s next existence.

Chapter 6 — Workers Together; Unequal Yoking; Temple of the Living God

TermOriginalTranslit.LiteralSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaningBurmese rendering & risk

Deut. 22:10, ox and donkey)“do not be unequally yoked,” “do not team up with”Warns against compromising partnership between believers and unbelief in matters of ultimate loyalty[NEW TERM] Medium. မတူညီသော ဇက်ဖြင့် အတူတွဲမထမ်းကြနှင့်. Clear agrarian image with low collision, but application (interfaith/interreligious partnership) is culturally sensitive in a majority-Buddhist context; must be taught pastorally, not as a blanket prohibition of ordinary social relationships.
temple of the living Godναὸς Θεοῦ ζῶντοςnaos Theou zōntostemple/sanctuary of the living Godbelievers corporately as God’s dwelling place, echoing OT temple theology”temple of the living God”The church as the locus of God’s own presence, in contrast to lifeless idols (6:16)[NEW TERM, extends BASELINE “church”] Medium. ဗိမာန်တော် (baydan-taw), reserved in Myanmar Bible usage for the Jerusalem temple; distinct from ဘုရားကျောင်း/ဘုရားရိပ်သာ (pagoda/monastery), already forbidden for “church” in the baseline. Must clarify “living God” (ဘုရားသခင်အသက်ရှင်တော်မူ) versus lifeless images.

Distinguish from Buddhist reflection on regret/remorse (ဝိပ္ပတိသာရ) over past unwholesome karma, which functions within a self-directed moral-improvement framework; godly sorrow here is relationally oriented toward God and leads to a specific outcome — salvation without regret (7:10).
repentanceμετάνοιαmetanoiachange of mind/heartturning from sin toward God”repentance”The fruit of godly sorrow: genuine turning, evidenced by changed conduct[NEW TERM] Medium. နောင်တရခြင်း (naung-ta-ya-chin), an established Myanmar Christian term. Distinguish from mere ceremonial confession or private regret without changed direction.

Chapter 8 — The Grace of Giving; The Macedonian Example

TermOriginalTranslit.LiteralSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaningBurmese rendering & risk
grace (of giving)ἡ χάρις τοῦ Θεοῦ (τὴν δεδομένην)hē charis tou Theouthe grace of God givenGod’s grace expressed and evidenced through generous, sacrificial giving”the grace of God,” “this act of grace”Generosity is itself an outworking of grace received, not a merit-earning transaction[BASELINE REUSE, extended sense] Critical. ကျေးဇူးတော်, exactly as recorded. CRITICAL RISK, central to the “Generosity and Grace in Giving” doctrine: Christian giving must be taught as a grateful response flowing from grace already received, in direct contrast to ဒါန (dana), ritual almsgiving offered to monks or for merit at a pagoda specifically to accumulate ကုသိုလ် (merit) for a better future rebirth. Every giving passage should carry a translator note reinforcing this contrast, parallel to the baseline’s grace-versus-merit rule for Romans 4 and 11:5-6.
equalityἰσότηςisotēsequality, fairnessmutual, reciprocal sufficiency among believers, not identical wealth”equality,” “fair balance”The goal of the collection is not redistribution by force but grace-motivated mutual sufficiency (8:13-15)[NEW TERM] Low-Medium. ညီမျှခြင်း (nyi-hmyit-chin). Low collision.

Chapter 9 — Sowing and Reaping; the Cheerful Giver

TermOriginalTranslit.LiteralSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaningBurmese rendering & risk
cheerful giverἱλαρὸς δότηςhilaros dotēsa cheerful/joyful giverone who gives freely and gladly, not under compulsion”cheerful giver""God loves a cheerful giver” (9:7) — the manner of giving matters as much as the amount[NEW TERM] High (borderline Critical). စိတ်ရွှင်လန်းစွာ လှူဒါန်းသောသူ. MAJOR CULTURAL COLLISION: the verb လှူဒါန်း (to donate/give alms) is the standard verb for Buddhist ဒါန (dana), almsgiving performed principally to accumulate merit (ကုသိုလ်) for a better rebirth or a more favorable present life. This is the single highest-stakes collision point for the “Generosity and Grace in Giving” doctrine in this entire book. Christian giving as taught in 2 Corinthians 8-9 is (a) motivated by grace already received, not merit sought; (b) evaluated by cheerful disposition, not by the size of the gift or the merit-value of the recipient; (c) directed toward fellow believers’ material need, not toward earning karmic favor. This term requires human theologian review at every occurrence.
sowing and reapingὁ σπείρων / θερίσειho speirōn / theriseithe one sowing / will reapagricultural metaphor for proportional consequence”sows…will reap”Generous giving is met with God’s generous provision — a principle of grace-based divine response, not a fixed law[NEW TERM] High. မျိုးစေ့ကြဲခြင်း / ရိတ်သိမ်းခြင်း. RISK: this metaphor closely parallels popular karma-causation language (“as you sow, so shall you reap” is itself widely used as a folk description of ကံ, karmic cause-and-effect). Must be taught as describing God’s own personal, gracious response to a giver’s generosity — not an impersonal, self-operating cosmic law of karmic return that functions independent of God’s will.
sufficiencyαὐτάρκειαautarkeiaself-sufficiency, having enoughcontentment / having all one needs, provided by God”sufficiency,” “all that you need”God’s grace supplies sufficiency for every good work (9:8), grounding generous giving[NEW TERM] Medium. လိုအင်ပြည့်စုံခြင်း / လုံလောက်ခြင်း. Distinguish from Stoic or Buddhist self-sufficiency achieved through detachment from desire; here sufficiency is God-supplied provision, received, not self-generated equanimity.

Low-medium risk; clear military metaphor.

false apostlesψευδαπόστολοιpseudapostoloifalse sent-onescounterfeit apostles claiming legitimate authority they do not possess”false apostles”Rival teachers in Corinth falsely claiming apostolic authority for self-serving ends[NEW TERM, built on BASELINE apostle: တမန်တော်] Critical. တမန်တော်အတု (tamantaw a-tu, “counterfeit apostle”). CRITICAL doctrine “Genuine versus False Apostleship”: must clearly mark these as impostors, not merely rival or lesser teachers, since the passage explicitly links them to demonic deception (11:14-15).
deceitful workmenἐργάται δόλιοιergatai dolioideceitful workersthose who disguise themselves as legitimate ministers”deceitful workers”Same false-apostle group, emphasizing intentional deception[NEW TERM] Medium. လိမ်လည်လှည့်ဖြားသော လုပ်သားများ.
SatanΣατανᾶςSatanasadversarythe personal, malevolent spiritual adversary of God and his people”Satan”The source and mastermind behind false apostles’ deceptive disguise as righteous ministers (11:14)[NEW TERM] Critical. Retain transliteration စာတန် (Satan). CRITICAL RISK: must never be rendered as မာရ်နတ် (Mara), the Buddhist personification of death/temptation who opposed the Buddha’s enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, nor conflated with the ranked nat-spirit hierarchy. Satan here is the singular, personal spiritual adversary of the one true God and his people across all of Scripture, not a mythic figure localized to a single enlightenment narrative or one spirit among many.
angel of lightἄγγελος φωτόςangelos phōtosmessenger of lightSatan’s capacity for benevolent-seeming disguise”angel of light”Warns that spiritual deception can appear attractive, even luminous and helpful[NEW TERM] High. အလင်းရောင်ဆောင်သော ကောင်းကင်တမန်. Risk: Burmese folk-spiritist tradition includes benevolent-appearing nats who nonetheless demand appeasement or exact a cost; must be clear this is a warning about a personal evil being disguising himself, not a description of an ambivalent nat-spirit’s dual nature.
jealousy (for the church)ζῆλοςzēloszeal, jealousyPaul’s protective, covenantal jealousy for the Corinthians’ exclusive devotion to Christ, likened to a betrothed bride”jealousy,” “godly jealousy”Paul’s pastoral concern that the church remain devoted to “one husband,” Christ, uncorrupted by false teaching[NEW TERM] Medium. မနာလိုစိတ်/စောင့်ရှောက်လိုစိတ် (protective zeal). Must be distinguished from petty envy; this is covenantal, marital-fidelity imagery applied to the church’s relationship with Christ.

CRITICAL RISK: must be sharply distinguished from the Buddhist cosmological heavenly realms (nat-pyi, deva realms, Tavatimsa etc.), which are impermanent stations within the wheel of samsara from which beings eventually fall and are reborn elsewhere. Paul’s paradise is God’s own eternal presence, not a temporary heavenly rebirth-station.
thorn in the fleshσκόλοψ τῇ σαρκίskolops tē sarkia thorn/stake in the flesha persistent, painful affliction (its precise nature debated) permitted by God to prevent pride”thorn in the flesh,” “thorn in my side”A messenger of Satan, yet permitted by God, to keep Paul humbly dependent on grace rather than proud of his revelations[NEW TERM] Medium. ဇာတိကိုယ်၌ ဆူးချောင်းတစ်ခု. Must be taught as purposive divine discipline that produces humility and grace-dependence, not as karmic punishment for past wrongdoing, which is how persistent affliction is more commonly explained in Burmese Buddhist folk causal reasoning.
messenger of Satanἄγγελος Σατανᾶangelos Satanaa messenger of Satanan agent of the adversary permitted a limited role under God’s sovereign purpose”messenger of Satan”Even Satan’s agents operate within the bounds God sovereignly permits for the believer’s good (cf. Romans providence doctrine)[Combines NEW “Satan” Critical term + BASELINE providence] Critical. စာတန်၏တမန်.
sufficient graceἀρκεῖ ἡ χάρις μουarkei hē charis moumy grace is sufficientGod’s grace as fully adequate provision in weakness, not removal of the weakness itself”my grace is sufficient for you”The central verse of the “Power in Weakness” doctrine (12:9)[BASELINE REUSE grace + NEW “sufficient”] Critical. ကျေးဇူးတော်သည် လုံလောက်ပါ၏ (kyayzu-taw thi lonelauk-par-i). CRITICAL: grace here is not a merit-reward for enduring hardship well, but an unearned, freely given sufficiency that operates precisely where human strength fails — the polar opposite of a self-strengthening spiritual discipline model.
power made perfect in weaknessἡ δύναμις…ἐν ἀσθενείჳ τελειοῦταιhē dynamis…en astheneia teleioutaipower…is perfected/completed in weaknessGod’s power operates most fully, not despite, but precisely through human insufficiency”my power is made perfect in weakness”Foundational statement for “Power in Weakness”: divine strength is displayed, not diminished, by human frailty acknowledged and surrendered[BASELINE REUSE power_of_god + NEW “weakness” ἀσθένεια] Critical. ဘုရားသခင်၏တန်ခိုးတော် … အားနည်းချက်၌ စုံလင်တော်မူ၏. Risk: must not be moralized into “weakness itself is a virtue to be cultivated” (a possible misreading resembling ascetic self-denial as a spiritual technique); the point is that God’s power is displayed through acknowledged human insufficiency, entirely dependent on grace, not through weakness as a self-generated discipline.
signs of a (true) apostleτὰ σημεῖα τοῦ ἀποστόλουta sēmeia tou apostolouthe signs of the apostlemiraculous and character-based evidences confirming genuine apostolic commissioning”signs of a true apostle”Distinguishes Paul’s Spirit-empowered, self-authenticating ministry from the false apostles of ch.11[Extends BASELINE apostle + NEW “false apostles” contrast] High. တမန်တော်ဖြစ်ကြောင်း လက္ခဏာသက်သေများ. Must be distinguished from occult or amulet-based supernatural displays associated with weizza (esoteric adept) practice or the potency ascribed to protective charms — already flagged in the baseline power_of_god entry regarding အနုဘော်တန်ခိုး.

Distinguish from self-examination as a step toward accumulating merit or purifying karma; here it is examining whether one is truly “in the faith,” i.e., in genuine union with Christ.
Christ in youΧριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖνChristos en hyminChrist in youthe indwelling presence of the risen Christ in the believer, the proof of genuine faith”Christ is in you”The ultimate test of authentic faith is the indwelling presence of Christ himself, not external credentials[Extends BASELINE christian_identity_in_christ doctrine] High. ခရစ်တော်သည် သင်တို့၌ ရှိတော်မူ၏. Must be distinguished from a mediumistic or possession-type indwelling (as with nat-spirit possession in folk practice); this is the permanent, non-displacing indwelling presence of the risen, personal Christ by his Spirit, not a temporary trance-state occupation.
holy kissφίλημα ἅγιονphilēma hagionholy/set-apart kissa customary greeting among believers marking familial, sanctified fellowship”holy kiss”Expresses the church’s set-apart, family-like fellowship (cf. baseline “holy,” “fellowship”)[BASELINE REUSE holy: သန့်ရှင်းသော + fellowship: မိတ်သဟာယ] Low. သန့်ရှင်းသောနမ်းခြင်းဖြင့် နှုတ်ဆက်ကြလော့. Note: literal kissing greeting requires a culturally適切 contextual note, since it is not customary Burmese greeting practice; the theological point (set-apart familial affection) matters more than the literal gesture.
Trinitarian benedictionἡ χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, καὶ ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ ἡ κοινωνία τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματοςhē charis…hē agapē…hē koinōnia tou Hagiou Pneumatosthe grace…the love…the fellowship of the Holy Spirita tripartite benediction naming all three persons of the Trinity distinctly and coordinately”the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit”One of the clearest Trinitarian formulas in the NT, closing the letter[Combines BASELINE grace, lord, jesus, god, holy_spirit, fellowship — all Critical/Low] Critical (as a combined doctrinal statement). ကျေးဇူးတော် / မေတ္တာတော် / မိတ်သဟာယ, each reused exactly per baseline. Every component term must retain its exact baseline rendering so the Trinitarian distinctness of the benediction is not blurred; this verse anchors curriculum-wide consistency for Trinity teaching alongside the Romans baseline’s Father/Son/Spirit vocabulary.
