Executive Summary
01 Executive Summary — 3 John | Burmese Translation Requirements (Phase 1)
Why it matters
3 John is a fourteen-verse pastoral letter, but its brevity conceals unusually concentrated translation risk for a Burmese, Theravada-Buddhist-majority destination culture. Unlike Romans, where several doctrines require filling genuine vocabulary gaps, 3 John’s dominant problem is the opposite: nearly every load-bearing term (truth, love, good, hospitality, testimony, pride) already has a fluent, natural Burmese equivalent — and that fluency is exactly the danger, because the natural equivalent is already occupied by Buddhist merit-making, meditative, or monastic-authority vocabulary. Verse 11 alone (“he that doeth good is of God”) sits directly on top of ကောင်းမှုကုသိုလ်, the single most reinforced religious-ethical category in ordinary Burmese life, and reverses its causal logic. Getting this letter’s five doctrines right in Burmese requires disciplined translator-note fencing, not new coinage.
Key findings
- Zero Critical-risk doctrines, but five High-risk doctrines — every one of the curriculum’s five assigned doctrines (Hospitality to Traveling Ministers; Imitating Good rather than Evil; Church Leadership and Pride; Commendation of Demetrius; Truth and Christian Fellowship) is rated High, all requiring human theologian review, none escalating to Critical only because no single-verse doctrine here rises to the destroy-the-gospel severity of, e.g., Romans’ resurrection or incarnation terms.
- 8 Critical/High-risk terms in the term registry (1 Critical: God; 7 High: love/ἀγάπη, truth/ἀλήθεια, testify-testimony/μαρτυρέω, loves-to-be-first/φιλοπρωτεύων, expel/ἐκβάλλω, good-conduct/ἀγαθός, do-good/ἀγαθοποιέω) — all requiring theologian-level review before approval.
- The single highest risk in the entire letter is 3 John 1:11: three related terms in one verse (ἀγαθός, ἀγαθοποιέω, κακοποιέω) run directly against the grain of everyday Burmese merit theology, and no existing published Burmese Bible translation currently supplies a corrective note.
- Truth (ἀλήθεια) occurs six times in fourteen verses and structures the entire letter’s logic; its established rendering သမ္မာတရား shares its root with the Noble Eightfold Path’s sammā (“right view”), the highest-density collision risk of any single term in the curriculum.
- Hospitality vocabulary (vv.5–8) risks default assimilation into dāna (merit-earning generosity to monks/travelers) because the outward behavior commended is nearly identical in form to the competing cultural practice, unlike collisions where the behavior itself is unfamiliar.
- Diotrephes’ status-seeking and expulsion of believers (vv.9–10) risk being read as ordinary or admirable senior-religious-figure authority given Burmese culture’s high deference to monastic seniority; documented Myanmar leadership literature has, in some circulation, even reframed this conduct approvingly.
- Documented circulation risk on 3 John 1:2: independent Myanmar prosperity-teaching tracts isolate this verse as a stand-alone health-and-wealth guarantee; this curriculum must never format or excerpt it in an exploitable way.
- No existing Burmese translation (formal or dynamic-equivalence) currently corrects for the v.11 merit-collision — this curriculum’s mandatory translator notes cannot be borrowed from any existing edition and must be originated here.
Risks
- Silent syncretism at v.11 if the reversed causal direction (relationship → good conduct, not good conduct → improved standing) is not reinforced on every occurrence — the highest-priority risk in the whole curriculum.
- Truth-as-self-attainment drift across six occurrences of ἀλήθεια if the Christ-centered, revealed, relational frame is not consistently restated.
- Merit-transaction reframing of hospitality (vv.5–8) if dāna-adjacent vocabulary or framing is allowed to stand unfenced.
- Normalization of Diotrephes’ abuse of authority (vv.9–10) if cultural deference to religious seniority is allowed to soften the text’s unambiguous negative verdict, in either direction (too soft or, per documented circulating commentary, re-valorized as decisive leadership).
- Prosperity-gospel proof-texting of v.2 if formatting/excerpting guardrails are not enforced in downstream teaching materials.
- Sectarian (Jehovah’s Witness NWT-style) rendering drift on “the Name” (v.7), θεός, and πρεσβύτερος if landscape-survey exclusions are not actively screened against in Phase 2 back-translation review.
- Flattening of legally-weighted structures: the threefold testimony for Demetrius (v.12) and the distinct φιλοπρωτεύων vice-naming (v.9) both risk collapsing into generic praise/criticism if compressed by paraphrase-style translation choices.
Opportunities
- Buddhist mudita (sympathetic joy) offers a genuinely low-risk cultural bridge for the Joy Tied to Truth-Consistent Living doctrine (vv.3–4) — one of only two Low-risk doctrines in the letter and a rare point of positive cultural resonance to build on pastorally.
- Jewish and Islamic testimony/witness traditions (multiple-witness legal structures, shahada-style attestation) offer strong comparative-theology bridges for teaching the Commendation of Demetrius doctrine’s evidentiary weight.
- 3 John requires almost no Old Testament narrative background (unlike Romans), making it a strong candidate for first-generation Buddhist-background believers as an accessible entry point into Johannine ethics, provided the merit-collision and truth-collision risks are actively managed rather than left to default cultural inference.
- The letter’s short length concentrates review effort: all five High-risk doctrines are anchored in just seven verses (1:5–12), allowing theologian review to focus tightly rather than spreading thin across sixteen chapters as in Romans.
Recommended actions
- Mandate the reversed-causality translator note on every occurrence of ἀγαθός/ἀγαθοποιέω/κακοποιέω (v.11) as a non-optional Phase 2 output, per
12_ai_translation_requirements.md. - Route all five High-risk doctrines and their associated High-risk terms to human theologian review before approval; do not permit native-speaker-only sign-off on any segment containing v.9, v.10, v.11, or v.12.
- Enforce the hospitality-vocabulary fencing rule (no dāna framing, explicit or implied) across all vv.5–8 segments.
- Apply the prosperity-isolation guard to v.2 in every downstream document, lesson, and marketing/pull-quote asset.
- Screen all back-translations against the four documented cult/sect rendering patterns in
05_translation_landscape.md(prosperity isolation, NWT-style “the Name”/God/elder renderings, authoritarian re-valorization of Diotrephes, syncretistic merit-glossing of v.11) before final sign-off. - Confirm the provisional YouVersion Version ID (179, Myanmar Standard Bible) against the live catalog before hardcoding any production Scripture-link generator.
